Well, I will say hello to Dakka, but I do want to do it so it is not so chiched in my opinion (or at least, fail and try my best to do so). Alright, so my name is Tanakoskye22, a guy who is in college who just happens to be into Miniature wargaming to a good degree since I was 14-years-old. I had two other blog threads at one time, but since it was all over the place and took a lot of bookkeeping to update both at one time, I kind of abandon them in favor of having one general hobby blog thread. For my painting skill, I am not the best at all, but I plan to try my best to get better at it! (I am more of a conversion/building kind of guy). (Edit: Coming back from a long Hiatus from Dakka Dakka and wargaming in general, I am going to be taking slow for a little bit. Plan to have some stuff uploaded soon).

I am going to start off with what I have recently finished up: My conversion of Ashlynn D'Elyse to look like Utena Tenjou from the Revolutionary Girl Utena. Rutger Shaw and one of my mules in my Merc list I plan to play.
I also plan to have Taryn Di La Rovissi finished up with a Vanguard by the end of today or tomorrow and post it for you guys!

Yes, I couldn't help but smile when I read the title

Looking at the other minis, I can't help but notice how strange looking Utena is. I don't know if it's blurry or if it's how the GS looks (if you used it) but the other miniatures look, well, better. You did one fine job with the colors, tho, she's very similar to the "real deal".

Keep'em coming!

Well it was my first time trying eyes with models, so it kind off-putting. Plus I am not sure how to do whites after a wash and that. But thank you! Although if you have tips how to use whites with washes, I would accept the help happily.

To be perfectly honest, I'm an extreme noob when it comes to painting white.

MWG has a nice tutorial about layering white, they have another (IIRC) that's available if you are a Gold Member.

White shadows either look gray or blue-ish, Kris used the blue technique. One of the used techniques is starting with a Gray, then slowly building up the white until you have a pure white for highlights.

Again, I'm really not skilled when it comes to painting white, it's one of the reasons I decided to paint my SM with lots of white, to practice (and based on Satsuki's uniform, so it had to be white). The test model is here.

What I did was prime white, shadow the areas I felt necessary using a soft gray wash (It was Vallejo's Pale Gray wash). I cleaned up the areas I wanted white, then used Nuln Oil in all the areas I wanted pure black to contrast, like the vents, gaps in armor, etc.

Hope it helped but I really am not the best person when it comes to white best of luck!

Oh wait, now I remember this video from a while ago. Now I am slapping myself for not referencing it and making the white look god awful.

Oh well, will touch up after I get some other things done.

Alright, for those tuning in (which just might be only TheDraconicLord for the time being):

I did finish up Taryn and the Vanguard tonight, so one of my lists for my Highborn Contract is done. That is the good news.

The bad news is that the thing I take pictures with (i.e my phone) did not charge properly so it will have to be tomorrow when I get that up. :/

Alright, so I managed to actually get the camera charged over night so I could upload some pics of these models.
Now this finishes up my 35 pts Ashlynn list, in which now I move on to finish the rest of my Damiano list (in which I need to paint up Damiano himself, Stannis Brocker, and Reinholdt). After that, I hope I can get some of my stuff from Christmas built before some things I am going to make for Nercomunda come in.

She looks very shiny. Is it because of a Gloss coat? The face looks as if it's shining.

How do you do your blues? The mix of colors is interesting, are you painting over the base color with drybrush? (I'm asking because I think the cape was hit with too much drybrushing)

Besides that, the "mech" looks pretty cool and you seem to have mastered painting metallic colors I find them a true PITA when I have large metal areas to paint like that "mech".

P.S: Hope I'm not getting on your nerves with all the critiques and all, I swear I'm just trying to help

No you are not, since it is not insulting for the most part and you are making valid critiques. First off:

For her, I may have might of used a bit too much flesh wash on her. When I get a chance, I might drybrush it a little bit.

Here is how I did my blues for her:
Basecoat Vallejo game color Shadow grey -> Layer or so of Vallejo model color Dark blue -> Wash of Secret weapon Heavy black wash (Purple for the creases and folds if appilcable) -> drybrush with Vallejo Model color Sky Blue (inner part of the cape I mixed mutation green and sky blue. I forget the exact ratio though).

Metallics are not too hard if you get it down right (and a bit of armor wash ).

P.S. Not that I am a stickler on it very much, but the 'mech' is called a Warjack, as the other Warmahordes players might get a little finicky about it.

Alright, so I managed to finish up Damiano and Reinholdt to almost finish up my second Merc list (still need to finish Stannis Brocker) before I go off to bed.

Also, I tried giving him eyes, but since I kept screwing up, I just painted the flesh over it, so until then my Damiano is stuck being a no face-sama.

Alright, so now that I managed to finish up Stannis Brocker (and the final model in my Damiano list), I can take a little break from painting Warmahordes models and work on a few other things that need my attention. Since I have a couple projects for school I need to do, so progress might be slow. But my plan that stands for this week is:

*Paint my demo model I got from trying Wreck-age (exact model is the Staker Sapper)
*Build my PanO models that are still in the blisters (Aquila Guard with HMG, Order Sargents with Combi Rifles, Hexa and Nisse both with Sniper rifles)
*Build Visgoth Rhoven and friends that is still in the blister
*Build my Willbreaker for Skorne that is still in the blister
*Build and clean my PP plastic Cyclops Savage and Menoth Multi-Warjack kits, as well as magnetize
*Work on some of the Chaos Cultist from the Chaos part of Dark Vengeance to make it into a Chaos Cawdor Gang for Nercomunda

Well, this should keep me busy for the week if the projects do not get in the way too much.

Hum, I believe you have been improving. This last one seems to have a better skin and face than the previous ones; The sword looks cool, looks very worn and like it had lots of use. Maybe splatter a bit of red?

The blue still looks a bit rough I dunno if it's the enormous contrast, but those big light blue in the middle pop so much

Still, lots of work in a relative short time and plenty more to go according to your list! Good luck with those and your school projects!

Slowly, I am trying to get down the art of drybrushing (Still not there, but it is getting somehere) and doing it with a much lighter blue. And yeah, I eased up on the flesh wash a bit.Good thing I finished half of my project in one day (Female divine in Japanese Mythology, which was easier than it seemed at first).Working on some bases now for Rhoven and friends and some gangers for Necromunda (also have to remind myself to paint hazard stripes on the base when it is painted).

Alright, so I managed to get a good amount of building done (at least, what I have now a bit) today. Also got my package of Marine scouts from Choose Nothing, so I plan to convert/Modify them into Van Saar gangers for Necromunda.

Also, as the title change implies (as of now): Welcome to Nercomunda, please take your complimentary Lasgun and Wildsnake, and please no killing the local Guilders. Also, try as best as possible to keep your Juves alive, as they might become a powerful ganger.

One being painting the Demo model of the Staker Sapper I got from demoing a game of Wreck-age, and Managed to get some stuff built from both the Chaos side of Dark Vengeance (only going to use it for Nercomunda and kill team), and finished magnetizing the Menoth Crusader/Templar/Vanquisher kit. Hopefully plan to show you the base color of my Van Saar color scheme soon.

But, recently I have expanded some of my paint collection due in part getting some funds for auctioning some of my items (also Netrunner, but I do not think no one here wants to hear about my card gaming habits as well).

Alright, so I apologize for being a bit MIA ladies and gentlemen. I have been finishing up some projects and cleaning up around the house. However, I have managed to finish the rest of my (not) Van Saar gang and managed to get a game for our campaign in. After I finish another gang, I might switch gears to Warmahordes (and possibly Infinity as well) for a bit just so I do not get bored of it.

Ok, I believe you are getting better the leader and the 2 cultists seem to show a better brush control that the first miniatures so all that hard work is showing some results

Good idea using the DV cultists for gang members, the miniatures do have a ton of character.

Indeed! Although my minor gripe is some of the models having a bit too much detail to them for what I like (but that might just be me), they are wonderful and full of character. Also, if you ask, I am not trying to follow any type of god, but in the lore for them I wanted them to be a mix of Shin Megami Tensei Neutral and Chaos than kind of Chaos in the sense of Warhammer 40k.

And thanks for the input mate! ^_^

I was kind of going for the ancient Persian look for my Skorne, considering the models for Skorne have influences of both Japanese and Persian battle armaments. And thanks! I wanted to get the rest of what I have for PanOceania done hopefully for djphranq's monthly painting challenge as I juggle school a bit as well.

Yes, I can see what you mean. White is always a pain in the ass and I guess the only way to remedy that is is "practice, pratice, practice"

That white really needs a new fix once you have the time =/

Still, you are doing an amazing progress, I wish I managed to paint as fast as you do

Granted I do get stuff fast reasonablly (this is mostly a slow time due to school and that). Once I finally finish up the rest I have to (and get some skill) then I will go back through them as I have to do with my base Markings for my Warmahordes.

On that note, I might get some of the GW cheap pack space marines or so to just build on my skill with painting white.

So I know very little about Infinity, but I like the look of the models. I bought a few to try and paint but they were too small for me. You have done a good job with them. I struggled with the one I tried due to its size and then said to heck with it. Keep it up!

@Squall- Trust me, I know how you feel. After coming from painting heroic scale like Warmahordes and GW miniatures, I can understand the frustration. Still beautiful and dynamic models, but the smaller details are a little bit harder to paint.

Alright, so I managed to get a few more things done, but have not gotten a chance to post them up since I have been busy with finals last week and mother's day. Managed to finish up my Paingiver Beast Handlers so I just need one more model, the Will Breaker, to finish up my token Skorne force. Also went and built a Orlock model from some Catachan bits I got from a trade so I am going to work on that on and off. After I finish up my PanO and character for my Exalted campaign, my main focus for the next few weeks is probably going to be Warmahordes since we just started the second season of the Scars of Caen leauge.

Finished up the last to models that I own for PanO last night, but was too tired to post up and that. Both are the Hexa and the Nisse with Sniper Rifles. Next plan of action it to tackle my player character for Exalted and get a decent start on my Willbreaker to finish my Skorne.

I have to take a look at them. Interested to see how they turned out.

@DraconicLord: Yeah, I kind of did that as a way to separate the Hexa from the Nisse as they do look a bit similar to the untrained eyes a bit.

Alright, so I managed to get my Player Character for Exalted, Kaydessia, done now and some water 'effects' using some PVA glue and painting it a bit as she comes from an Island tribe. Also got started on eEyriss and my Willbreaker for Warmahordes so that is what is on my plate for the time being.

Is that scum a catachan with cadian arms? I assume the GS is covering the armor plating. I like him, I actually just recently built a couple scum of my own. Its a great model to make because you can just do whatever you want with him as long as he has pistols.

Yep, you are pretty much right on the money about that. Used the cape from the Cadian set, and after setting the arms in I used some green stuff on it make it look like more of a coat (although Green stuff is not my forte as of now yet).

Yeah, eEyriss is on her original base. More often than not epic characters in Warmachine come with a detailed base, hence why they are more expensive money-wise most of the time.

Alright, so I managed to get some more things done, but sorry for a bit of the delay of posting it up here. Managed to get the rest of my cultist done and get one of my configurations on my Menoth heavy jack kit done. Also got a start painting more of Rhoven and friends and my Underhive scum.

As well, here is the monthly progress report on my collection:

Warmachine/Hordes:

Cygnar: 7/7 painted. 100.0% complete.

Protectorate of Menoth: 81/91 painted. 89.0% complete

Mercenaries: 79/104 painted. 76.7% complete

Skorne: 10/10 painted 100.0% complete

Infinity:

PanOceania: 19/19 painted. 100.0% complete

Necromunda/Kill-team:

Chaos: 20/27 painted. 74.7% complete

Van Saar(?): 9/19 painted. 47.4% complete

Orlock: 0/1 painted. 0% complete

Hired guns/swords(?): 0/1 painted. 0% complete

Wreck-age:

Staker: 1/1 painted. 100.0% complete

Other:

Reaper Minis: 1/1 painted. 100% complete

Total: 227/272 painted. 83.5% complete

Notes: Added built underhive scum. This month I should try and finish up my Warmachine/hordes collection since that is the majority of my unpainted items, but I shall try and tackle some of the rest of my Necromunda and 40k items as well. Once I get above 95% painted, I shall start building more items for my Necromunda gang, and a possibly of some Mordheim in the future.

Alright, so I apologize for a lack of updates for two reasons:

1) I have been busy with two jobs this summer, so although I am getting a good cash flow soon, I am going to be too busy to buy and work on miniatures.

2) Also, I have been a bit unmotivated due to a bit of a burnout and going through a bit of a depression.

But enough of that, here is Rhoven and friends along with a finished Crusader Variant for the Menoth heavy warjack kit!

Alright. Let me apologize for a real lack of progress. I have been busy with my two jobs and training for a swim race, kind of being depressed, and kind of just unmotivated to paint really (as well as being detracted by some games I got from the Steam Sale) as a mentioned before. Got a game of Warmachine since a month or so go in with a 35 pts Ashlynn list but lost to Butcher3 on scenario (no pics, but next game I hope I will take pics of this Monday). But for now, here is my progress.

Also, I might be making a Orc Warband for Mordheim since I have possibly found a group. Possibility of stuff in the near future, but I might focus on some Nercomunda soon and some of my other Warmahorde items after I finish my Chaos.

I just want to get hobby points for it). Also, I have a Black Orc Warband for Mordheim in the works and plan to paint up my Orlock gain slowly.

Got pFeora and a Exemplar Sensechal done. Might try to get a game with pFeora, but I heard she is not the greatest Warcaster in the Menoth faction.

I like the improvement I am seeing over the time you have been posting.

Your paints are still way to thick. Thinning them out more will give you a much better look and a smoother transition between colors.

That is still one of my main weak points. It seems I just make still thick or I water them down way too much.

I know it is suppose to be a milky like texture. You got any hints and tips that helps with that?

Here is how I do it.

I use dropper bottles. I even moved all of my old GW and my P3 paints over to them (you can get them really cheap from usplastics).
For most painting I use a wet pallet and I thin at about a 2:1 paint to water onto the wet pallet and that seems about right for what I do. For glazes or blending I use 1:1. Rule of thumb is what people call "skim milk". I find that to be about right. Play with it on something that is primed that you don't care about. Too thin and the paint beads up.

The nice thing about the droppers is you can count by drops so your mixes are always consistent

If you don't want to spend the money to move everything over you can always get cheap disposable eye dropper thingys and use those to pull paint from your pots. The key thing is consistency.

Also don't expect to be able to cover in one coat.

Like the Menoth guys. My group is starting to get into Warmachine, so I have picked up a Menoth starter and a few other boxes.

In regards to thinning paint. I find its hard to give exact advice because paints are so different. I use P3, Vallejo, and citadel paints. I usually don't have to water the P3 or Vallejo paints. Citadel paints I often do, but even among their own line they have different consistencies. For example, chaos black is thick as can be, while the bleached bone I find is already thinner than I like it. Long story short... you just have to experiment until you find what you like and looks good.

Alright, I think I have some eyedroppers around the house. Also not sure if this is a good idea but I might try and recycle my used up Vallejo paint bottles, clean and wash them out and try to switch the paint over to them, but I'll take the eyedropper idea.

Welcome to Warmachine mate!

Kind of a heads up and warning ahead of time, this game, while very balanced and well-made, has a very different mind-set when it comes to list-building and how it plays. The best way to learn this game is kind of unlearn what you have learned about Tabletop gaming from other games you have player. Now, this is not to say that they are bad per se, but Warmachine/Hordes from what I have found has a very different approach than those who have played other games before. I hope this does not deter you away, I just only wish to give you a heads up.

Since you picked up some Menoth, did you get the Choir at least? I say this because that is a mandatory purchase for the faction after you get used to the battlebox since they are cheap and help your jacks out a lot. This ranges from anti-shooting to magic, to buffing their combat effectiveness. As well, Menoth's playstyle is like almost Blue/White or Blue/Green plays: Synergy is your big thing, and so is denial of magic or so to make it difficult for your opponent. However, your warcasters are usually not so great in the defensive stat field, and the Menoth faction usually relies on Synergy since one model is not so great unsupported by buffs and de-buffs.

Also, here is a resource to help you out a bit. Gives a good rundown of units and so on and how to make them effective, but do take with a bit of a grain of salt.

They are okay, but they need support or need a bit of skill to make them work. Although they look like Ratskins so that works. I do recommend their UA if you have not gotmit, because it makes them a lot more effective from what I have seen. Also works as a leader and that. One thing of note is too is possibly is keep them on their 30 mm base they come with since the rules are finekey about it in Warmachine.

Honestly, that was not to be intentional, but I do like the outcome still. Might touch it up with a bit of highlighting. I did also get a start on some of my Necro models, so I might show off my work in progress in a little bit before the night closes out.

Here is my unboxing of the Fireforge Games Sergeants-at-Arms.
Alright, for my first impression on the kit. The models are nicely detailed and dynamically posted in comparison to Games Workshop Brettonian Knights and Mounted Yeomen, and four more than the Knight Errants/Knights of the Realm box. As well it comes with a good selection to make these guys with Spears, Hand Weapons and Crossbows. The down side to this is that the some of the load out options come with not enough for all twelve Sergeants so you may want to get another kit of these guys to make 12 Spear users or so on. As all the bits are finely detailed for true scale 28 mm.
Now, I will slowly build them up and show off the progress as I give more of my thoughts on it later on. Thus far, I am impressed by this kit.

Well, I managed to pick up my pre-order of Operation: Ice storm. Here is a bit of an unboxing of it and got done with washing the models. The models look nice detailed and come in bags to know what goes together. Only complaints I have is CB's trademark small antennae which need a bit of work to put on and the bits have a good amount of flash you need to clean. It also comes with three dice per faction, templates, markers, a Game Mat and some Paper terrain that is foldable for easy baggage.

Overall, I am impressed thus far and feel it was a good deal for the price of it.

I would be getting more done, but I am in the process of moving and focusing on school work. Catachan models seem to have a lot of converting potential as well.

Alright, so after moving I managed to make a makeshift hobby desktop for the time being.

Although, do rate my set up please.

So after I got myself settled in and got a good chunk of school work finished for the semester, I painted up some things.

I got myself another ganger done for my Orlock. A heavy with a Heavy stubber. Also got a bit of a start on my two Kings of War armies. One I plan to make a Orc/Undead evil army, and I plan to make a Crusader Kingdom of Men army. The KoM army I might get some Basiliea units and see if they fit.

Here is some works in progress I have started up recently. Going to be focusing a bit more on Warmahordes yet again as there is a league and gives me a bit of motivation to finish up the rest I need since it is a major chunk of what I need to finish up. Hopefully I can finish the rest of my models for Skorne and Cygcenaries.

Worked on a little more on the Bronzeback last night. Still a work in progress, but here is the general scheme I have for him. Plan to have him as one of the more centerpieces since I really like the model for the Bronzeback.

I like the work on the bronzeback. Some of the better work I've seen you do!

What scheme are you thinking for the Cawdors?

Yeah, I am learning to take my time with it more. Plus, I am getting the hang of watering my paints correctly.

As for the Cawdor scheme....I was either thinking the blue-white scheme of the Kingdom of France/Mesian colors from SMT or Black and white like the Templar order during the Crusades I believe. Then again primarily white might make it too semblance of KKK colors.....

I managed to get my Cawdor models finally on some bases the other day. Also got the Malifaux rule booklet and also a gift for Christmas for a friend since it was a double stamp day at my FLGS.

I'm excited to see how the Cawdors turn out. Are you going to try to make the cork seem like its something industrial in the underhive? Or are you gonna go with a more natural look, as most people seem to with cork bases?

I plan to do something Industrial to fit the underhive theme. Hopefully I can get them primed since once I go to the dorm, I am more than likely not able to prime there. Might work on them a bit more later to do that.

Also, joined up in a bi-weekly Dreadball leauge.

Playing with Mauraders as the Savage Trashers. Won my first game by four points by scoring a 4-point strike with my grot I call 'Sneek Hands'. Also, managed to kill one of my opponents players and knock out another for three turns. My other ork got MVP despite being out and doing nothing the whole game. Bought another card for my post-game sequence.

Overall, a good start with the league with the Savage Trashers in 3rd out of 6th.

So, I have been out on something of an hiatus from wargaming due to school and slight disinterest in dealing with forums for some time. Been painting a bit, and got into Bolt Action with Americans. With that, I am trying to paint an Asian skin-tone to represent the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Now, I managed to finish my M18 Hellcat and put it in video format.

Since I forgot I got a nice trade of Bretonnians a while ago, I think it might be good to starting painting/building up the rest for my Kings of War Brotherhood army. Being that all I have is Calvary at the moment, I have to see what I can get for Villein Bowmen and Spearmen to build out a well-rounded force.

Fluff I intend to have for this army is a legendary hero from long ago is resurrected and calls for the best knights and the peasants willing to fight in Mantica (or some world close to it) to combat against the growing evil in the land. Not really original and kind of Authurian, but it might give me the motivation to paint it up. Thinking about 4-5 different color schemes to represent different houses/philosophies each model follows in personal combat.

Hello there everyone. It has been a while since I have been on the forum due to personal reasons and a lack of painting up my stuff.

Was thinking of starting up again, or debating on making a new thread for my hobby stuff. Some of my main stuff I am working on for the month is painting my Blood Bowl teams from the starter set and if possible working on getting up to Six points of my Anglo-Danish Warband for SAGA. Downside is the quality of the camera phone is meh at best but I am working on getting photos together.

Finished Orcs Blood Bowl team with Humans in WIP. Forgot how fun painting some the GW stuff is. Hopefully the next thing I can get done this month is the rest of my six points for my Anglo-Danish warband.

So I have some monthly goals planned for the month of March:
The major ones I wish to get done:
+Finish the Starter Box Humans from Blood Bowl (this may be done by today or Friday, since Thursday is my game day).
+Paint up at least two more points worth of models for my Anglo-Saxon/Danish Warband (Which is about 8 warriors and 12 Levy I need to do). Needs to be done by the 18th at least.

Secondary Goals:
+Finish building my Soviets and get a start on painting them
+Paint Misaki's crew box for Malifaux..

Hello everyone! Sorry for the silence, but I have been bad on getting on Dakka Dakka itself. Granted I have been working on models during the silence to assure you, but I should finally be in the groove to be more active here.

As you see, I have been working on some Soviets (have Americans I have been working on from the 422nd Regimental Combat team, along with some Chinese Nationists) along with getting back into Infinity. Things to look forward in the near future are some old Croc-man and Kamau models along with a certain big T.A.G from PanO....

Kind of a two-fer but this is what I have planned for the month.

The Soviets here are the only ones left, save for about five models that are built and on bases. The PanO is a good portion of my collection.

If possible, I might try to see about finishing the rest of my Soviets.
