"After 12 months of development, Mat Hart and Rich Loxam are pleased to present “Guild Ball”, a tabletop medieval football wargame. Playing the role of the team coach, you will take control of a Guild Ball football (soccer) team and with a combination of tactics and strategy attempt to outscore your opponent whilst simultaneously trying to achieve additional secret political objectives and agendas.
Guild Ball takes place in a land now known as the Empire of Free Cities; it’s essentially a pseudo-historical setting with strong European flavours. The lands of the empire are made up of a huge variety of climates, cultures and landscapes each controlled by a sovereign City.
Mob football is a game generally played between neighbouring towns and villages on feast days (hence the popularity). The game was originally played in the middle of towns and villages where the objective was to take the ball to the opposing side of town. But to prevent the inevitable collateral damage it rapidly evolved into being played in the surrounding countryside, often in a special field set aside for the purpose. At its core, players on opposing teams, clash and struggle to control leather wrapped inflated pig's bladder and attempt to kick it into the opponent’s goal. Over the years, rudimentary leagues and tournaments have sprung up, there have even been some national level games between city states.
The Guilds have taken advantage of the huge popularity of the sport and have invested vast sums of money, creating professional teams and structured leagues. The public went crazy as the game was elevated to new heights of spectacle. Guild Ball was born amidst a blaze of interest and publicity and with it, a whole new business and revenue stream for the Guilds. Games are now played out in front of vast crowds of fans, whilst behind the scenes the results can mean fortunes are won or lost on the kick of a ball.
The game has been built from the ground up using modern design principles and philosophy resulting in a game that is supremely intuitive to learn and yet possess vast depths of complexity and tactical choices. Success comes with carefully constructed ‘plays’ and counter ‘plays’ with emphasis on anticipation, positioning and resource management."
Key features:
Tabletop sports wargame…
Guild Ball is a pure skirmish level wargame, not a boardgame. Players will enjoy the freedom of movement and complexity of decision making this entails. Additionally, uniquely for this genre of game, terrain can have a major impact on the gameplay.
Football Pitches…
Guild Ball is played in all across the Empire of Free Cities encompassing a wide variety of terrain which in turn allows for huge variety of playing surfaces and landscapes. Guild Ball is a 28mm miniatures game played on a 3x3 tabletop and so you can use your existing terrain to create exciting playing areas (no grid system).
Fast Resolution Hit System…
Guild Ball’s core dice engine is designed to be fast and easy to perform, makes the game silky smooth to play. Using classic D6’s with an intuitive dice pool system, hit resolution is lighting fast with minimal computations.
Playbook…
Whilst the hit resolution system is fast and intuitive, the playbook allows for a huge variety of outcomes to each dice roll. You decide the in-game effect you need to deliver success…if you get enough hits of course!
Influence System…
Guild uses a resource management called Influence to control actions and movement each turn. This leads to an intense bluffing and counter-bluffing meta-game as well as a need for deep risk management and turn planning.
Momentum System…
Guild Ball features a unique system that reflects the ebb and flow of a football match. As players perform and achieve in-game actions they generate Momentum which can in turn be spent on triggering special ‘plays’, shooting at goal or out of turn reaction moves. Any momentum left over at the end of the turn translates into a massive advantage on determining initiative the following turn.
Combo Play…
Guild Ball models are carefully designed to play off and feed into each other. Clever players will discover a huge depth of strategy available to them, which will be reinvigorated each and every time a new model is added to the Guild’s roster of choices.
Kicking/Passing…
We’ve designed Guild Ball to encourage kicking and passing the ball. The game actively rewards you for doing so, which results in a fast paced dynamic game flow. Like all our game mechanics, kicking the ball is fast and simple to do.
Build the team you want to play…
Guild Ball uses a fast team sheet generation approach with built in customisability for each model which allows you, the player, the maximum amount of control over flexibility of options versus simplicity of models abilities. You decide your strategy and the team you need to deliver on it.

STRETCH GOALS
I have pledge for EB on Two Teams as this seems fairly reasonable. I'm not sure about £40 per six man team for retail, mind you. That seems a little high.
I will obviously be watching DBX closely as I only have the funds to back one project. :(
The art looks great, but there's no gameplay video and hardly any info on the gameplay on the page. The early bird is only a 2 or 5 pound savings, depending on the level, so I'll wait to see more.
Looks like it's going to reach it's goal quite easily at this rate, but I just need to see more about the game before being really tempted.
This looks pretty neat. I'm not sure if I need another fantasy miniatures sports game in my life, but the models look pretty awesome.
I might grab a couple of teams to use as in a Fantasy game. It'd be great to have the players sell the meat of that random monster they slew, only to be confronted by enforcers from the Butcher's Guild, wanting their cut.
Cool concept, I wonder how well the measuring instead of grid will work. The grid does have some advantages and speeds up play. I can't see this getting as big as the more boardgame sports games that come in a box with a pitch . With guildball you will need terrain and you have to assemble the miniatures instead of the pick up and play approach that most of these games has.
The minis look nice though, and i have a lot of mordheim terrain. I'll keep an eye on this one.
Backed this, The company did a great job at listening to feedback from the community right before the launch, and Improved the KS to the state we see it now.
If they're willing to admit they had areas to improve in after feedback, and make those changes within a day, I feel confident in helping them with their project hands down.
It helps that the concept of the game looks great too. Loving that Fisherman's Guild, my girlfriend is getting the Morticians Guild.
The only thing is, though, I think the person behind Torn Armor was also a Project Manager, although perhaps not in such an applicable field as video game design as this guy is. It is helpful, but I think most important is experience in making miniatures... they do seem much more plugged in on that front, though, which is a good sign (despite not having direct experience themselves).
(cincy: Yeah, she described herself as such at the bottom of the KS page... spoilered below. I don't think we need to discuss her further here as I think this creator's experience is more directly applicable, since it is in the video game industry, but I just wanted to mention it)
Spoiler:
Secondly, Alyssa Faden has 7 years as a Production Director delivering dozens of half a million dollar projects all at the same time. With 7 years in the role and hundreds of projects delivered, not one was past schedule. Juggling multiple resources, handling risks, setting milestones, understanding if a project is on schedule - or behind schedule - months ahead of time is exactly what she is trained to do. When you back the Torn Armor kickstarter, you hire this expertise.
Resin masters of the first two renders posted (on my phone so I'll leave the update for someone else to post).
They look excellent, proof is in the casting and material choice for the actual minis of course, but they seem to be really on the ball (!).
I love games with a cheap rules pledge. I'm curious about a sports game on a normal wargaming table, so for two dollars it should be worth it for the read alone.
Hi guys, Guild Ball here - thanks for the support. We are long time lurkers of Dakka Dakka and its great to read the discussions your having about our game!
We still in a state of shock over the speed this has funded, all down to the community backing us.
Any questions feel free to ask - although we have to be honest so much is going on at the moment it might be a touch delayed in response!
I thought it would be going higher a bit faster as well, however with Dreadball Xtreme in the process as well, that soaks up a lot of potential backers.
To be honest though, the concept and setting of this game has me hooked, it could end today with just the one stretch goal reached and I'd still be happy.
Having said that though, I hope a lot more jump on board, these guys have a solid idea, and the sculpts shown so far are great.
I think you guys have too high expectations for this. I mean, this is the company's first product, a company that is never heard of before, with very little promotion, and with a game idea that is a bit niche-piece of the market. If this game survives for about a year, I would then expect it to reach a lot higher on an expansion. But for now, I think this is doing extremely well!
£48 for 6 minis might have a little more to do with it than what Mantic is or isn't doing.
Seems to be doing extremely well for a two-man operation with a huge profit margin. Just different markets, really.. the niche boutique market tends to do really well on KS and this is no exception.
Might back this for the rules PDF, for £1 why not?
I swung for this over DBX because the casting quality in my DB starter set is absolutely awful. I'm not usually fussed about mould lines, but these look like extra limbs!
And the Ref Bot was bent nearly 90 degrees at the ankles.
These GB look like great mini's, and the game seems to be different enough to avoid any BB/DB comparisons.
I'm extremely interested but I'm juggling a lot of kickstarters. I'm in for £1 and hopefully I can up to the resin minis if I have enough time with the pledge manager.
The few miniatures they have look great, but I just can't seem to get myself to pledge for something that has so few models completed... this is really in it's infancy.
I absolutely love the idea, but am not sure I want to take the risk myself until they are further along with the models (or basically have any models, other than the 2 renders, although the cast of the one model looks nice).
I've ditched my DBX pledge - still have too much Deadzone stuff to go for more Mantic at the minute - plus, the sculpts are pure crap, with perhaps the exception of the Asterians.
Guildball looks much more interesting, better sculpting and higher quality generally. I may upgrade to four teams in the end. Hopefully, this will gain some traction now the stretch goals are shorter too.
erratyk wrote: This may be pricier, but with all the minis I have I don't mind paying a bit more for what looks like a unique and fun looking game.
I don't need a million miniatures to justify my pledge, but I can see the appeal of that.
I'm just glad these guys have been successful.
Great sentiment. I've been spooked on Dreadball's potential quality issues (thanks guys!) but haven't pulled my pledge yet. I may switch that over to this game before long. The aesthetic here is certainly more pleasing.
The latest update has little print outs so you can have a game with the test rules! Pretty cool, imfo.
I'll be swerving DBX until Mantic addresses the gods-awful casting in my Dreadball KO set (Apologies if this is a repeat comment - I have made it elsewhere but not sure where!)
I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of this- it's had a few more renders posted, and 2 new guilds coming apparently (one already "in", and the other "coming soon").
I'm watching this at the $1 level for now. The artwork is nice, and that one mini they've produced turned out really well. I just don't know if I can justify another board/skirmish game in my life.
That beer swinging brute is pretty fun, but I kind of wonder how good it will look as a mini. What do you guys think?
BTW, have they indicated when you'll have to finalize your pledge choices? Because it looks like the minis are ending up quite different from the concept art, so I wouldn't really want to settle for any specific teams before I've seen the actual minis I think.
There is a game play and Interview update with BOW recently posted, could the OP or someone with more technical skills than me link it to this thread?
It is well worth a view and I like the game play and what I have seen of the miniatures. ....my one complaint, you have to buy the templates, dice and rule book all as additional extras (if you want them) @around £30 for the three where I think a better idea would have been a starter box of two teams with these included at a better price.
Denilsta wrote: There is a game play and Interview update with BOW recently posted, could the OP or someone with more technical skills than me link it to this thread?
I am not to sure why this KS is not doing a better than it actually is, the couple of models they have produced look good as does the concept designs.
I think "couple models" explains it perfectly...
75,000 pounds with four days to go for a game most had never heard of is pretty good, I think! If they knock it out of the park with fulfillment, there'll be even more interest for future things from them.
Yep, it's still a very pricey game, per model. I like everything I see except for the price (esp. after there's no longer the KS discount, since I know I won't have enough to buy in more than a pair of teams).
At Golem we have had lots of experience with kickstarters at every level now in the industry, but I can say now that never have chosen to work on metal production casts over resin masters!. It's not that the resins were bad or that the metals were better, I chose the production metal to show you guys how great the quality of the Guild Ball miniatures range is!
Shark was great to paint, enjoy!!!
There are more pics and updates to come on our FaceBook Page
Alpharius wrote: This does look nice, and I love the overall look of the miniatures and game, but, I'm going to have to wait until retail for this one.
Too many other campaigns running right now, Adepticon is a mere two weeks away, and Mierce KS 2.5 is a mere 4 hours away!
Still, this campaign looks to have been quite successful, so hopefully this means they'll be off and running and doing well for years to come!
There is not long left on this KS now, and if you follow the link on the first page you will see a lot of stretch goals have been broken just not updated in this thread.
Another point someone raised on the comments section of the KS is, if you go in for the 4 team option you get 4 free Union players, if you buy the Union captain as an add on you will then have a complete team for the cost of just one figure...well worth it
Due to the Canadian dollar being crap, I'm in at only 2 teams. Wish I could back 4 and do the captain model like Denilsta mentioned, I just can't afford it. I will however be picking up more teams if/when it hits retail.
I've checked in on this occasionally, and it's a bummer that they haven't put out an official KS update since doing a bunch in August, although they did make a facebook / website update in September saying they were still on track for December delivery.
The last KS update in August had this sweet image, though, so I am keeping an eye on this in a similar way to Arena Rex- low model count game with sweet sculpts, so it piques my interest. Just want to see if it's worth playing first, and the rulebook sounds like it's about to be or is currently printing.

Interesting that this just popped up here - I happened upon an old bookmark to the GB KS page earlier today and I downloaded the rules to check out this weekend... It was a game I was interested in and followed through its campaign but ended up not backing for budgetary reasons. Looks like it's available for pre-order from various retailers by the end of the month - not a KS pledge, I know, but at least an alternative if you strike out on that.

Yeah, that's what prompted it for me, actually.
The KS prices are soooo much better than retail that I'd love to grab one.
Just took a gander at the webstore on the GB website - holy ****, you're not kidding about the prices. They're listed for essentially double what they went for during the campaign... And now, after watching a couple of their videos and checking out a vassal play-by-play, I'm reeeaally regretting not scraping up the money to buy in originally.
Funny thing is, I'm getting 4 teams and some add-ons and the SG mercs, but after the sculpts were shown I'm getting not neccessarily what I WANT.
Butchers were my favourites but turned out bad and the Masons and Engineers terrific , but of course I have the Butchers coming (and Meathook). And retail Ox>>>KS exclusive Ox. My other teams (Fishes, Morts and Alchemists) are mostly good to great, with the Alchemists being way, way better than I expected, but some figures are disappointing, like Ghast. He looks so menacing standing still in his art, but his pose ended up as "hurr, I'm holding my saw in a weird way".
And the mercenaries, oh, the mercenaries. They turned out so good and I will get so few. But not Rage, who had the WORST art besides maybe Hemlock and might be my overall favourite Guild Ball mini now (Hemlock turned out great as well)! I took Gutter over him AFAIK, which turned out to be the only merc I DON'T like. Heh. I'm curious how Jynx is turning out, she was my most expensive add-on besides the big casket-carrying...Casket.
The joys of pledging for artwork, I guess. Lesson learned: When in doubt, always go for the guys with the frikkin baboon!
About the rules: Are you liking them? The original draft seemed pretty clunky and slow to play. I haven't kept up with them, besides hearing the chatter about sponges. I would really be pleasantly surprised if I get a game with fun rules and Sega Soccer Slam crazyness together with my minis! Rules for a crazy football game were what interested me in the first place!
Binabik, have you messaged them about changing your selections? I bet they would let you, most campaigns do if the sculpts change your mind about your preferences.
Yeah, I've wondered why it's so hard to find pics of all the models, too... hopefully they'll fix that soon. The retail preorders on Element Games just show the art.
This is supposed to release this month, and my whole gaming group is thinking of buying into it! Would love to see pics if anyone is getting some of the models

I'll get some up this weekend. I actually took a bunch and did a quick write of up the two faction boxes I bought.

This probably doesn't surprise you at all
You're right, not surprised but seeing pics and your thoughts on the models / rules would be great!
So below are photos of the Fisherman's Guild and the Butcher's Guild, and finally a scale comparison shot with a 40k, BMG, and Infinity model.
The casting on the models is absurdly clean. They are better cast than both the BMG and Infinity models I've dealt with recently, and remind me, if anything, very much like the high quality metals that Rackham used to produce. They're that clean.
The photos (from my iPhone, sorry!) may not show it completely, but the details are crisp and sharp and are going to really take to painting.
Assembly on them was incredibly easy; models are obvious in their assembly, and the joins are clean and fit well. I pinned Shark's arms, but probably didn't need to. I didn't pin Boiler at all, as he went together really, really well. The model cuts are logical and clean.
The other nice thing about the models is that nothing on the indicates that they're "sports" figures, so you could easily use them for other things. It's a great piece of design work, that they were able to do that.
Overall packaging of the models was really nice, and the included cards or of an expected professional quality, with clean art and font. I actually love the team packaging, as they remind me of books, and would look really great on a shelf next to one another. It's a shame that the cardboard boxes that come within them (think Infinity boxes) are a touch too large for the sleeve, because I'd love to keep them as my storage solution (I'd custom foam it). I may still try to find a way to keep the box art, because I think it's that good, and will look great on shelf.
Rules wise, my brother and I have screwed around with a 3 model game, and the game is clean, fun, and really well designed. The play system is clever and fun to use, and the rules are probably my favorite miniature "sports game" rules that I've encountered.
Overall, I'm really, really happy with these models. It's a project that I backed out of on KS at the last minute, and I regret it completely. Whenever S2 rolls around, I'm totally in.
Looks awesome, cincy! There's 8 of us from my gaming group buying in (doing a group order together so that we know we'll have opponents and to save on shipping). Can't wait to try this
IIRC, I opted for SOBS over this one due to cost (ah, to be independently wealthy)... These minis clearly blow their FFP counterparts out of the water, but SOBS has been a heck of a lot of fun to play, so I've looked it as a bit of a push. Now, though, with reports like cincy's (and the costly nature of buying-in post-KS), that minor regret about not backing is growing.
Here's a quick and nasty WIP. I'll post a better pic when the team is done. The minis are on the expensive side, but they are very clean. The style is uncluttered, almost blocky, which paints very well with bold colours.
Picked up the morticians to start with, played a couple of games and liked them, although I wanted a more pure scoring side (I'm using Brokkr in my local dreadball league, they punch lots and score little) for a change. So I've picked up the fishermen, and the models are brilliant.
Will get a few games with them and report back, but hope this game goes from strength to strength, as the rules are quality.
It is great to finally see pictures of the miniatures. Honestly if there were more pictures, instead of art, it would go a long way. I thought about pre-ordering but have held off until I see what they look like as I don't know how closely they are sticking to concept art and how well it translates to the miniature.
Wait, where did you see that the resin versions release soon?
My whole gaming club just bought in in a group order! We've got everything represented except a pure Union player (but since they're mercenaries many of us will be running a few of them) and Engineers as their models aren't quite as good as the rest, I think.
Really looking forward to playing this! I don't think we could've waited for the resins anyway, this is going to be a summer league.
And done. That took some effort.
My Guild Ball Mason's team.
Over all they are really nice.
Honour is a lovely model with an especially nice face. A few of the details are a bit undefined. She starts with two separate belts on one side but they mould into one blob by the time it gets around the back.
Honour has delicacy and movement, also lovely. I couldn't work out where the hell her scabbard went so I left it off.
Marbles is well detailed, but one side of his face suffers from the teeth not being well defined.
Mallet has personality, is a good sculpt and is all around nice.
Flint is a good model, but aside from his breast plate there's nothing to make him stand out. A bit boring.
There's nothing particularly bad about Brick. Nothing particularly good either. Have a look at the big guys for the other teams, they're all distinct. Brick's unique selling point seems to be that he doesn't wear shoes.
Tower is by far my favourite. Nice personality and features, not overly complicated. All round good.
On average, they are a lovely bunch, really fun to paint. A couple of them lack a little in personality but I'm happy with them.
Now, on to the Union.
(I put a better picture up, linked from photobucket. The Dakka gallery kept screwing with the image)
In a full size game it's 1 captain, 1 mascot, 4 others. The captain determines which team you're playing with, so you pick your mascot and other 4 from the team list or union players. Other than that there's no limits, so the Mortician team for example can have all 4 of the other players as big guys. Or you could have a captain and mascot from a normal team and 4 union players.
I think most teams have 6 faction models plus the mascot available, so if you don't go for the Union players you are looking at dropping one.
It's actually fairly balanced, in that you can drop one and your play style changes a little, it's not just cosmetic. But it won't change the theme of the team too much, so if you've picked a fast, goalscoring faction that can't hit hard, such as fishermen, then you don't have an alternate that turns you into a heavy hitter.
And the company have hinted they might go down the WM/H route of introducing a character at various stages of their story arc, so I might get the equivalent of eShark in the second season book.
Yeah, they've already said that Hunters Guild will be a season 2 team. More coming in the next week or so apparantly.
I just hope this doesn't suffer from Dreadball syndrome and unbalance the game. Otherwise it'll be the same situation of having to make sure everyone is playing the latest season teams..

I remain optimistic however!
Oh excellent! Where is my best source for Guild Ball info?
A little season 2 taster:
That looks like another big guy to the right of Tower. This one's got shoes!
Hunter's guild, Tenderiser (butcher's guild), Sakana (fisherman's guild)
On an unrelated and very selfish note, here's a WIP for my Union team.
I have a problem deciding how I'm going to finish her. After I fix that god awful mistake I've made with the purple on the edge of the cloak, I've got to do the trim of the cloak, the clasp of the cloak (it runs around the back of her neck), the feathers and the mask. My muse has deserted me and I can't figure out what colours to use. Any ideas?
(by the way, the detailing on the sword hilts is gorgeous)
@cincydooley, I'd love to mate. I've only had a quick look at Vassle and I'm not the most computer literate person. I've also only ever played one game - and that was a demo game at Salute. So, basically I'm saying, as soon as I'm not being stupid and I work out how it all works, hell yeah I'm up for a game.
The Union of the Snake - Guild Ball Union's Guild team.
Ok, they took quite a bit longer to do, but I'm done. But first permit me to explain a few things, because I'm not too happy with how the team turned out.
Apart from the captain and mascot, the players of the Union guild can play for other teams. When painting Union players then, I had two choices. Either paint them up as a normal team, or paint them up as individuals. I chose to paint them as a team. I regret not painting them as unique figures.
Painted as a team they look coherent on the table. But, the players each have their own personality and a colour scheme that works for one, doesn't work for another. I almost got away with this apart from one BIG exception.
Anyway.....
Blackheart turned out really well. He's got a cool Warhammer 5th edition dark elf vibe going and is the reason for the colour scheme. At first I wasn't too keen on the sculpt, it's a bit meh, but he's now one of my favourites.
Decimate is cool. Lovely figure, nice details. (Did I mention how nice the sword hilts are?)
Snakeskin is a good figure that I tried as hard as a could to paint very badly. She's the only human to not have a foot peg, which makes her the only model that needs pinning.
Minx is a nice sculpt but you need to know some stuff. She's only available in resin and she's not available in the guildball store. I got her from Salute. Also, as a resin mini, she's very fragile. With a game as vigorous as guildball, I'm just waiting for her axe and dagger to snap off.
Coin is ..... the worst mini by a long mile. It's a lump of metal. It's really bad. In fact it's so bad that I recommend that - unless you particularly like Blackheart and Coin and you want to use Avarice and Greed in a Union's Guild team - don't buy the Union starter set. Have a look at other companies and buy yourself a menacing dark elf and a serpent with some character from someone else.
Now Avarice and Greed. This duo count as one character. It comes in four parts. Avarice on foot, Greed on foot, Avarice's chest plate and Greed strapped to the chest plate. It also comes with three rare earth magnets so that during a game Greed can hop on and off of Avarice. I've only put them together a few times, but already I've broken Greed's arm by pulling him off (it's hanging on by the pin I put in there, so it's not noticeable unless you look for it). The chest plate doesn't fit well without putting some serious effort into filing the hole big enough and finally, once it is all together, the magnets are very strong, making the chest plate that doesn't have Greed on it a bugger to get off.
Also they are the two models that suffered the most from the colour scheme I chose. It really doesn't suit them and I made a massive cock up by trying to force them to work.
Once again, they are a lovely bunch of miniatures and I'm glad I chose bold colours for them
Blackheart came out exceptionally nice! You've taken a really varied group of models and made them look like a team, well done
I got in my first game yesterday and really enjoyed it! Now if Element Games would just ship the second half of my gaming store's group order, we'd be set (only half of my butchers came in with the first shipment).
I guess the trick with Butchers is to plan it so the take downs take place at the beginning of the activation phase, so any models that leave the pitch don't have a chance to influence play (or score goals!)
Anti-butcher tactics: Draw an 8" circle around Boar and never, ever go into it.
(it's actually really good advice, too!)
Most teams can run circles around the Butchers, but Boar will just decimate most models for only 1 influence, leaving the rest of the team's influence to either finish the job of killing or do other things....

I didn't have much interest in the game either and then TTG magazine did a feature on it which prompted me to at least peruse the rules. Once I'd read through them a couple of times, I was hooked. It's a nice straightforward system with deeper layers of complexity i.e. you don't have to know how to take out an opposing player and score a goal in the first turn (quite tricky), but by combing plays and character traits, there are all sorts of cool outcomes to be explored.

Dunno, but they may just do it for Alchemist/Engineers given the close links in the fluff between the teams. I like that Flask was actually made by the Engineers' Guild.
