So, I'm starting this thread here at somebody's suggestion (Ruglud's, if you must know). First up is an oldie but a goodie, a couple of storage tanks that I scratch built some time ago. The style is something most of you have seen before. You'll have to trust me when I say that the terrain I post will move rapidly outside of your Zone of Familiarity. Some of you may have seen these pieces before, on the WH40k tables at the NOVA Open tournament in 2010 or 2011 perhaps?

One storage tank started life as a coffee can, the other as bottle of saline solution for contact lenses. Everything else is paper, except the railings (q-tip shafts) and the ladder (balsa wood)... Oh, and the rivets are sewing pins. Don't stick you hand inside the terrrain please.

Thanks for stopping by.

So here are some more photos. I think this design should look familiar to many. Just a simple bunker, with a detachable roof for interior access.

The top view.

I may have a few more photos of other bunkers to post. Let me know when you're bored of them. I have much cooler stuff to come Or click the Infinity graphic in my sig if you want a sneak peek. Don't worry, it's to another thread here on Dakka. I'm not rick-rolling anyone...yet

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Red Harvest, great to see you starting a thread here

Really cool terrain pieces, the bunker reminds my of the ones they used to show in 2nd / 3rd Edition. Subbed!

Post by: Red Harvest

That's exactly where the idea originated, OneManNoodles. 2nd edition. Good catch. And these are from the 3rd edition...I'm almost positive. Lousy edition though. Perhaps 4th. Anyway, this is the last of the gray stuff.

I found that 'not gray' terrain was more interesting to make.

I think the Alien storage tank started as an oatmeal container, but it's been so long since I made it, I don't recall. Everything else is paper, foamcore on the landing pad (from an idea on the old GW website, back when it was, y'know, interesting.) and the ruins were white sytrofoam, and then clad in paper. The one common ingredient would be wood glue (aliphatic resin) instead of PVA glue -- except for the bases.

I think I'll try photographing some of the Fantasy terrain I made too. But this is enough pix for one post.

So, to sub a thread you simply need to post a comment in it? I'll be hunting a few of you guys down soon enought then, so watch your six I already found Cam's land rover.

And remember, click the Infinity banner below to go to the Infinity terrain. Although I'll start posting WIPs of that here soon enough, and maybe just a few finished pix there.

Great stuff, loving the old school stuff, and the thick walls. And I totally agree, grey is very boring after a while.

Also most of us have our threads in our sig's at least our main ones. I have 2 main ones, you could spend some serious time catching up on us all, but I think it was worth it when I did it. Give yourself about a year for Vik's thread, but it is full of wonderful gems.

If you do not want to subscribe just by posting, you can go in your profile and untick the box for it. Then you have to use Rugluds method to sub, but it means you can then comment without subbing.

Thank you for posting these pic's, very inspirational.

I see the little subscribe thing now. Thanks. And thanks for rolling out the welcome mat guys. Much appreciated. Now this gallery voting thing... I've voted about 20 times, but my info only lists 3. I think it's a browser setting on my part. Grrr. Ah well. Learning new things is healthy.

Anyway, the terrain thus shown goes way back to 2nd ed. days, except for the desert stuff. That's from 2007. So,I build to last apparently. Good terrain should last 20 years

Anyway these Obelisks...

...date from the same time as the previous terrain. But since I am working on a desert board these days, I'v started to modify them. You can see one set has hexagonal bases now. I used that hologram ribbon (?name?) and it produced a nice effect. I thought so anyway. Had LEDs been readily availabe to me back them, I would have lit the 'gemstones' on them. But the obelisks inspired this for the table I'm slowly building these days...

At last, LEDs Fiat Lux!

I painted these for a Terrain painting contest (took 2nd place.) to resemble red marble. I think I ended up with more of a granite look, but I like it. To complete the look I should add a few more layers of polyurethane to it, and then wet sand it smooth. Just worried about sanding through to the paint or paper. That would be a mess.

Sadly, I need to work on the photo skills still. Yes, Lighting, lighting, lighting. I know. I'll get it.

Thanks for stopping by.

Amazing tour, and yes, I fully agree on the other-than-grey colour choices for the builds!

And curved walls with spiralling stairs, I can't praise those high enough!

Excelente!

Post by: Red Harvest

I've managed to get quite decent at the spirals and curves...and in proper scale too

The exterior shots of the building are in the Infinity thread. (link in the sig) Not sure where I put the photos of the finished stairs... oh, never mind. I only primed them. Never could decide how to do the interior of the building beyond movable walls, and a plexiglas floor... for playability of course. Have to build a few more of the really big buildings soon. Man, they take serious time though.

After a few decades, straight lines and right angles began to bore me. Espero que me entienda. So I look at what Gaudi, and Gehry, among others, did, and draw inspiration.

(OT: Why do you use English-UK spellling? I thought Argentines learned US English.)

I love LEDs in models, put some in my up-armoured Rhino and Predator (still need to finish those models...)

So majority of your stuff is built from card right and laminated for strength? You should check out silveroxide, he's a crazy papercraft builder of the highest level

I didn't know that you could auto subscribe just by posting... That's a handy little feature...

Just had a quick peek. Yeah, Silver Oxide's stuff is good. I'll be checking out more of that. Thanks for the heads up.

Makes me regret that I never gave decent paint jobs to all the vehicles I built back in the day-- Leman Russes, Sentinels, Land Raiders etc, and even a Baneblade from plans in an old White Dwarf-- Rogue Trader era White Dwarf. Anything to avoid giving $$$ to Nottingham. Plus, The ones you build yourself do better on the table. The Dice Gods always favor the scratch builder. True.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I want to build a cool dropship at some point too. Perhaps something inspired by the UD-4L from Aliens, or something from Elysium, or based on the Sea Stallion (US navy helicopter). It would need to be big, 20" long big, though, to be in good scale. I have little interest in distorted scale and proportion these days.

Yeah, we used to stack dice to make little platforms for the meeples, but in Infinity we use a d20, which is not so stackable as the d6. So the "Temporary terrain element" came to be .

And now for something completely different (just to spam up my post count. Lol.) a Fantasy building. It was supposed to be an Inn. I used a few Mordheim bits on it, and plastic from clamshell packaging for the windows. The gargoyles on the roof...that is the second set. They kept getting knocked off. Everthing else is paper.

And a shot of the interior.

There will be more Thanks for stopping by.

Great stuff, love the stairs. Great way of making them to scale and usable.

I could see that building on many a battlefield, apart from maybe infinity.

Keep it coming.

Actually the fantasy Inn works just fine for Infinity. You have a themed board for a 'Rendez-Vous at the Renaissance Faire' scenario. As you can see.

I'll post a few more of the Fantasy building photos. Just have to get around to uploading everything.

Thanks Doc. It's just corrugated cardboard, but neatly cut up and hardened with a pva glue wash. I see alot of the stuff used, but people don't really do much to make it look well, better.

A few more Fantasy buildings. The farmhouse is inspired by the cardstock Brettonian farmhouse that came in the 5th(?) edition box - Brettonians v. Lizardmen. The tower is a coffee can. I do raid my recycling bin for a lot of building materials. I'm "eco-friendly" or maybe just, erm, thrifty, yeah, thrifty.

I like the fantasy buildings, but the spiral stairs keep knocking me over!

I'd surely like to have a glimpse at your old vehicles, if you still have them around, too.

(OT: I studied at a British-English school, and I'd say those were the rule more than the exception in bilingual ed, at least in my time. Of course, that was so long ago, I'm not sure US-English did even exist back then !. The cubs are attending school now, and it is also UK-English, with Cambridge oriented IE formation. Old habits just die hard, I'd guess)

Post by: Red Harvest

Well, I learned Castellano from Colombians and actual Castilians, so my Spanish isn't quite Central American-- which is what we normally hear in the US, obviously. Leads to some amusing situations.

My old vehicles, as in haven't touched anything in 7-8 years or more, tail end of 4th ed. Most are even older. They were in a sterilite container, those that survived the periodic purges anyway.

I was always more interested in buildings, so I never finished painting or even building most of the stuff.

A few of the bits, and tracks on the tanks but not the landraiders, are from the GW kits, everything else is from scratch.
These drop pod blanks I can re-use though. They can become Infinity terrain.

Thunderbolts...sigh. Found out they weren't exactly the right dimensions. Kind of took the desire to finish them. The one fuselage w/out wings etc is the right size, but I quit playing before I did more work on it.

And of course this

to replace the one I built from White Dwarf plans. The original did not survive the ages, and a few moves, among other things. I can modify this one to be some sort of heavy industry vehicle for say terraforming and use it as Infinity terrain.

I still scratchbuild Just not vehicles. And why do I always read Omnissiah as Omnius? (oh yeah. Never mind.) Now, any ideas for transforming them into useful terrain for a certain skirmish game? The tanks and sentinels are write-off, but the rhino blanks, drop pods, and the baneblade have potential for conversion.

Anyway, a few fantasy building shots, since I have them, and have an injury that prevents me from doing any building. (Cleaning a mini. A blade slip. It happens. but right at the fingertip. bleah, so I'm out of commission while it heals. Should be a few days. Typing is a joy right now too.)

For some reason, I really enjoyed building this stuff. The base sections are from Celestial Seasons tea boxes. The actual wood bits are from a paint stirrer. Everything else is paper. These buildings, heck, all of the buildings shown so far-- minus the vehicles and the Infinity Obelisks, was on the tournament tables at the NOVA Open in 2010 and 2011. Took a bit of damage in 2011 too, like the movers transported everything in the back of a cement mixer or something. So, everything stayed at home in subsequent years. Still, there is a certain sense of pride in knowing that my stuff made it to the big leagues.

Thanks for stopping by (I've been using that phrase for ages. Seems many folks around here use it to. Hmmm, great minds and all that?)

Your work is pretty amazing and very cool. I will say your painting is incredibly crisp. Refreshing to see in these days of "Make it rusty! with a side of Mud."

As to Rhino's, always thought to make some without tracks, kind of like stack-able shipping containers. And why not repurpose the sentinals to industrial lifters (ala Alien.) Been done before I know, but you could paint them JCB yellow with lots of hazard stripes. Put on a set of forks or grabbers instead of guns. They could be stood around cargo yards.

Thanks guys.

Well Magos, it has been a while since I built any vehicle. But I'll build some soon enough. I could use some cars and buses and delivery vehicles etc, as scatter. There are plenty of folks who use toys and die cast stuff, but it looks, meh.

Hmm, good ideas Cam. Those Sentinels are huge too, scale-wise, so they have potential, definitely heavy industry. I thought the Rhinos could get really big wheels-- Aliens APC style-- and a few other conversions. Thing is, I would want some them to come out Civilian and Industrial or something like that.

The painting is how it was done c.1998-2002 or thereabouts (5th ed.). And to take advantage of the post, a few pix of a bridge I did.

and with a river section.

DAT VEHICLE PILE. Damn, that's some fine work!

I happen to have a wing of three scratchbuilt Thunderbolts that I'm not using these days. It would be interesting to get them into the hands of a frequent 40K player and see them hitthe table at Adepticon or something.

You need four for the squadron. Just sayin'. The few times I played them at Apoc, well, much fun, even in their unfinished state. Inasmuch as anything about Apoc was fun. <shudder> I think, no, I know, that I had more fun putzing around building the vehicles than I ever had using them. Not sure what that says about me.

How about a little more Fantasy, since I have the photos. Sure. The Watchtower. From a scenario in an old White Dwarf. Built with paper and a paint stirrer, and some matte board(?) - the thick stuff used for mounting photos.

This is not so Infinity friendly, or so it may seem, for those who have an inordinate fear of snipers. The time it made it onto the Infinity table, a Lasiq Sniper moved into it,thinking 'happy days are here again' and promptly got itself combat camoed by a Prowler with ADHL. Lol. Spent then game glued to a wall.

I should have a few free hobby hours this week-end. So, maybe some WIPs? I hope things warm up enough soon, so I can do some water effects. I don't like mixing the stuff indoors ( I use a two part epxoy called Superglaze). And it doesn't cure well when things are cold.

Thanks for stopping by.

Tower looks brilliant, for idea's for others. Replace wood with iron sheeting or ceramite armour and boom 40k watchtower, bit more glass, and it's a control tower on an airfield.

Great stuff, inspirational all round.

Red Harvest's Terrain & Painting Blog-- 13 August Mobile Brigada WIP @ 2014/03/13 19:02:25

Post by: Red Harvest

Hmmm, I wasn't going to do anything to the towers already shown, except replace the flagpole that was at the top of the watchtower. But I have these things, and I've been wondering how to convert them to Infinity terrain. It was a castle. And yes, we had fun storming it.

Lots of 'glass' might be the way to go with them. Paint them to look more like granite, which is a common facing material these days. Something to think about, get an interesting urban feel that way. Thanks for the idea.

Any more terrain your going to dig up? or should I just buy a chinstrap to stop my jaw hitting the floor every time you post.

Its nice to see such varied and skillfully made terrain.

I really, really like that bridge and river.

Red Harvest's Terrain & Painting Blog-- 13 August Mobile Brigada WIP @ 2014/03/14 22:46:57

Post by: Red Harvest

I'm just posting images of the good stuff. There is mediocre stuff too. (a smallish amount, the original bunker and building I did for 2nd ed 40k) The bridge was alwys a favorite of mine too. Inspired by a Warhammer skirmish table I saw at Games Day Baltimore in 2002 (or 2003?) for a scenario called 'troll under the bridge'. I have another WHFB bridge, and a WH40k bridge too.

For the asphalt I used a foam sheet that I found at a local crafts store. Odd stuff-- Creatology soft foam sheet or something it's called. But it does a nice job of lookiing like asphalt without being rough like a textured piece ( sand or whatnot). Here is a road section of it.

Although it could use a bit of work...potholes, cracks, a line down the middle...

And then there is modular stuff, which I like doing.

Lots of variability to this. Sadly, when 3rd ed came out, it became less useful. So I started the Fantasy stuff.

I'll take some photos of the rest of the river and road soon enough. And a few other natural feature terrain pieces.

Excellent stuff, your water work is top notch.

And there is always room for Gothic rubble, in any era of play. Because at some point someone thought, "got to have me a Gothic Castle!" and someone will obviously blow it up at the first opportunity.

Again some glass paneling and it would look like one of those fancy smancy restaurants.

Thanks guys.

The trick I found to create water that is on such a shallow platform is to make a very shallow indentation by gluing sand and gravel on the edges, paint it up and then pour in ~1mm of gloss water based polyurethane, like you would use to finish furniture. Then cover it so you don't have dust settling in. Give it a day to dry.

If you texture the indentation before painting, the irregularity of the suface will be reflected in the surface of the water. A really nice effect.

I used 1/8" for the swamp pieces shown above. And nylon bristles from an old toothbrush for the weeds. Looks like some of the paint has finally worn off of some.

Thanks guys.

The tiles on the roof are a piece from the Old Mordheim plastic spruce. Credit where due. Mordheim had some really cool stuff. The woodwork is scratch though.

The grass is toothbrush bristles or bristles from a pool cleaning brush, primed with gesso, drybrushed (heavily) with kelly green, hit with a dark green wash, light drybrush with yellow.

The swamps were fun to make.

Hmmm, looks like I might be running out of pictures. Time to take more.

...And here they are. The river pieces:

and the road pieces:

which fit with the one bridge above. Never did make a cobblestone road. I need to tidy these up with some yellow lines. Surprisingly they scale well for Infinity. I originally built them wide enough for a Leman Russ.

I'm running low on stuff to show. Means I'll have to start making new stuff. Can't say that's anything but good news

Thanks for stopping by.

Here is a farm that I built some time ago. It too works very well for Infinity, and Malifaux 1.0 when I played it, because of the wide flat and unadorned bases to the building, the openable doors (using popsicle sticks for giant hinges on the large barn has proven to be a wise thing. Man oh man, they are sturdy.) and the interior access.

And with the roofs removed.

And a wishing well. Lost the bucket and rope bits somewhere along the way.

There are resin low stone fence pieces that go with it, but they are not scratch built. I probably should have built a chicken coop too. Ah well. The roof damage occurred during transport to/from a tournament. I think the movers used a cement mixer to transport things :/

Post by: Red Harvest

The farmhouses. Had to custom mix the colors. I'm glad it looks right. A heavy dragbrushing with a housepaint for a primer makes nice wood grain texture. The wood is actually strips of a cheerios box (packet? in the UK?) Thanks.

The Eldar style led indirectly to the sort of buildings I started building for Infinity. I like it too. Thanks. The curvy stuff is an interesting exercise in 3d thinking. Challenges are good.

Well, this will be the last of the blast from the past stuff. I'll start with a few WIPs soon enough. Still hoping I'll be able to get some time to do the terrain contest. Time is tight right now. Hence the trip down memory lane, rather than real work. Well, at least y'all know now I'm no dilettante.

A villa fence. Always a good thing to have.

And yet another tower. If you look at the middle photo you can see some more tournament damage...like somebody ran into the thing with a landraider. I'll fix it someday. But for now, it makes for a fun story.

I think I'll try and finish a quonset hut project I started last year, but never could figure out where to take it. I have a few ideas now.

Thanks for stopping by.

An entire river, big giant hills, but sadly, no scratch built trees worth mentioning. I'll have to remedy that at some point. Should have some free time later this week. Still cleaning up after a nasty windstorm last week.

Yeah the pegs are q-tip shafts. They just keep the pieces together on the table in case off the inevitable bumpings. The walls are low density styrofoam ( I think I cut up some packaging for it) with paper glued on top... homebrew foamcore Lots of drybrushing with thick housepaint to get texture, then a few washes to get the splashed mud effect at the bottom.

These walls still see plenty of use too.

Vehicles are a fun thing to build, but take as much time, if not more, than buildings, at least for me. Now I just need to start converting the ones I have into Infinity usable stuff. I'll get there.

I managed to snag a little building time. First chance in nearly a month. I'm calling this the Quinfinity hut. I started it last year, but tossed it into the WIP bucket because I had no idea how I wanted to finish it. Now I do
The photos from before:

The current progress. I'm using ideas from the Hab modules. This will join the set, and I can make a nice themed table with it and a few other pieces.

It needs more detail of course, and a few other things, but any step in the right direction is progress, no matter how small.

Nice work on the quinfinity but. I love the look of infinity, I just can't even think about another game system. But I love the look of the yu jing, especially the monks.

The hayloft if the farmhouse set gives me worries though. I busted my head open as a kid (3 times actually, explains a lot) while at a cousins house. We were swinging out the hayloft into a huge pile of hay. Somewhere along the lines we got the idea to see who could swing out the farthest. I didn't win, but I did get too far out and let go at the wrong time. A few dozen stitches later and I was up for round two, but that was ixnayed by the families.

First piece of Royal Mail I've ever received. Thank You very much Cam. It is a great supply drop. And you do know how hard it is to get milliput in the US? We end up using Apoxie-sculpt-- which is good stuff too. (Plasticine is another one. Sculpey or Fimo are the equivalents.) I think the sheet of rivets may see more use as buttons and lights on consoles, and entry lock pads etc... But I'll be sure to to do rivetting with them The little 'gems' can be backlight for a really nifty effect I think. This was way more than I expected for 2nd place. I salute you and your generosity, sir.

Now, yeah, I know, get to work, I've got terrain to build

Red Harvest's Terrain & Painting Blog-- 13 August Mobile Brigada WIP @ 2014/05/02 06:29:16

Post by: Red Harvest

Thanks Guys.
Barzam, I probably spend way more money buying the tools than I ever would if I just bought the terrain directly. But I have way more fun this way.

April was a brutal month. I accomplished so little. But I finished, for the most part the quinfinity hut, now I just need to paint it. Maybe add a few details-- some vent either on the side or roof, and some sort of external utility box I think. There is actual 'glass' in the windows but it doesn't show in the photo. A widow's walk perhaps?

Also made a small catwalk/bridge to connect the hab units. Might make 1 more, but more like a breezeway. and another 'utility box' for scatter seen above and below.

Just need to do some painting. I'll worry about finishing details like signage when I think the building is done (Ie. I have built a 4x4 table''s worth of stuff) So I can get a unified look.

But onto something more interesting.

I've decided I don't like having it on the hill like this, so I am going to put it on a terrace and balance it out with another building.
(and just noticing how small the mini looks. I think of this as a small building too. In scale it is. People build way too small IMHO)

The plan is to transform the pink foam into a terrace for the 2 buildings. second building will be like the first, although I want a split level to it. And of course a dome. Same as first building or something else? like

or

or

which is stepped and ogival

Thanks guys. The hab module set is becoming a nice pick up and put down sort of project. But, no thoughts on domes?

Anyway, this from LittleTower's thread:

what I would like to know, how do you create the templates to create these curves? that is exactly why I still haven´t went from blocky to curved builds, I can´t figure out how to create surfaces that fit the needed space the way you two (red harvest and LT) do...be sure of my envy

I too would like to know this.

Here is something basic. Make a form out of something-- here you see I used cardstock from food packaging. Pre-curve the material. In this case, it is poster board. (that's what the copper pipe is for, sort of like a rolling pin. for plasticard I would use heat.) Press the material onto the form and then glue a second layer of material onto it. Then a third. This is usually enough to ensure that the material holds the shape . Add additional layers until you have the desired thickness.

Making the form is fairly straightforward. And you can use any sorts of materials for it. And if you treat these things as parts, you can build something bigger. Spoilered in case you have inner ear/balance/vertigo problems.
Spoiler:

The trick with paper is to figure out which direction it wants to curve. Try it sometime with a piece of cardstock. It will flex easily in one direction but not in the perpendicular direction. I don't think plasticard has this directionality.

You could also use the form as part of the piece itself:

and voila, a dome is born. This incidentally, is pretty much how I created the form shown in the first photo montage.

Hope this helps.

Post by: Littletower

Great walk-through

Just to add a bit, cardboard can be moistened (lightly) while shaping it over the matrix, both to help the moulding (especially with complex curves) and preserving the new shape once dry.

Plastic, on the other hand, will mostly self-support itself in the given shape after heat-forming.

But, no thoughts on domes?
Oh yes. I think a matching dome would be best for buildings that are that close and part of the same complex.

I know how you do it, but it still looks like magic to me. I'll have to give it a go one day.

Red Harvest's Terrain & Painting Blog-- 13 August Mobile Brigada WIP @ 2014/05/04 16:38:01

Post by: Red Harvest

No magic Doc, just glue. I think you are correct, matching domes. Thanks for the input. I'm thinking to make it internally accessible too , for playability.

Thanks Littletower. For moistening, just use a slightly damp sponge, or even a piece of foam like that which comes with the minis (if they still include that with GW stuff.)

Although, If one used large domes, say 20-30 cm in diameter, interior access is possible...

But for crazy domed stuff, see the Nevsky cathedral in Sofia Bulgaria http://www.sofia-guide.com/assets/800px-AlexanderNevskyCathedral.jpg If I can ever figure out how to make the interior accessible I would like to build something inspired by that.

So to continue my scatter shot approach I've re-started another building. This is what it was going to be like

I decided that I really did not like the roof. I was going for another rooftop garden sort of thing, but meh, not this way. So, I've worked on a bit of a change...

I will put a dome on it... of course. Those are more or less one of the unifying features for this table. I'll see about working in some sort of greenery or tile or water once I finish the dome.

Thanks guys. I have to admit that it is a bit of fun just making up shapes as I go. Kind of like building sandcastles, only these are longer lasting I think the challenge is to keep the asymmetry and still maintain the balance and proportion.

So, a few late stage WIPs of the dome for this building. I went with a traditional shape, and more ribbing.

Needs a bit more smoothing. Thing is the wood filler is great for paper, but I need to use high grit (180 or 220) sandpaper to avoud damaging the paper. So tedious at times. Still, this is to my eyes an improvement on the rooftop garden. I still might find some space for a bit of the garden motif though. The greens and blues contrast nicely with all the brown tones. And a few windows somewhere too. And of course the usual building details.

The way the dome portion fits to the roof though, might need to re-think that, so that we can get to the interior of the building and leave the dome in place.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey mate! I really like this! Lovely organic shapes going on with those buildings and the form of the terrace is nice!

My only point... and it is my own personal preference... is there is a little bit of awkwardness between the lovely organic nature of the buidings... and the regular grid like appearance of the hexagons on the terrace...... IMHO i think even circular terrace peices.... or a swirling effect would tie it all together.....

Please dont take it as a negative..as i said it is only my opinion..... but the build and the quality is top notch!

Thanks, and remember C&C is always welcome The plan is to paint the hexes like terra cotta tiles so they blend in a bit better. But if it doesn't work, I'll rip 'em up and try something different. Or rip up a few here and there to remove the regularity of the pattern... hmmm, you may be onto something MagosBiff.

Well, Dr H, they are baby steps at the moment, but I'll get there. One hopes that I complete enough by the end of August that I can showcase it in a local tournament.

And now I need to build a rest-room in that time frame too.

So Comfort Station Zebra. For the LoER contest. A little progress. I'm finding this a nice challenge too.

Going for a 28mm scale thing here, so don't let that enormous base trick your eyes. In scale the stupid thing is like ~135-138 cm in diameter (4'10") Try tracing a circle that size and then stand in it. Sheesh. I would so prefer 20mm bases. But won't happen. I'll live with it. Bah. Enough whining. I've got plumbing to build

And for grins, I found the floorplans for an adobe style guesthouse. So, to prove a point

I'm going to build the thing to 28mm scale. And it will be playable. Might do something about those right angles though.

Hmm, that was exactly what I was thinking, Theo. Use it as a safe house to rescue/assassinate the civvie (a non-combatant mini which we use in Infinity from time to time.) The idea is to have 3 of them for a shell game scenario.

Second one is not an outhouse Vik, but as can be seen, does have rather a nice bathroom. That bathtub in the upper right left corner is huge. Which is cool, since it is a good place for a model to hide in, even with the big base

edit: Yeah trouble telling left from right sometimes.

Anyway, some more progress. Started the exterior walls

And a bit of work for the floor and doorways.

I think I'll just print out a tile pattern for the floor, rather than paint it. I've found that works pretty well if you print on 75# or 110# paper and seal the printed tiles with a polyurethane. But Ojo! spray the stuff, don't brush it on or you will smear the ink.

Got to get this stuff out of the way so I can get started on what really matters. Plumbing

Anyway, quick and dirty floor tiles. As my painting skills wane (eyesight, hands... aging really sucks) my digital imaging skills wax. One door closes and another opens I guess. Hope it doen't lead to an Oni

Only I got lazy and used a rattlecan sealer instead of airbrushing on a water-based polyurethane. So, it smells, and I'll have to let it finish off-gassing before I can do more work. At least on the interior.

Great work, both looking fantastic. Some lovely curves going on.

Isn't it amazing how if you try and real scale stuff it looks slightly off. 40K has ruined us. Don't get me wrong it looks Freakin awesome. But by GW standards shoulld be 50% bigger or a good 30% smaller if using vehicle scale?

Well GW vehicle scale is all over the place. The Leman Russ (based on the old French tank the Char B1, FYI) is risible. It is also one of the first vehicles they made. I had one in '95. The Rhino on the other hand, scales like this (using the 28mm to the eyes of a person of average height scale)

........................Rhino.............Bradley Fighting Vehicle
Length.............6.55m...............6.55m
Width..............4.23m...............3.6m
Height.............2.72m................2.98m* (*includes turret)
[how the do you set up charts on this forum anwyay )
So they are comparable, but the rhino is a bit wider. I don't have other vehicle measuements for comparison, but I think most of the vehicles they did a decade ago turned out all right, mostly.

As far as the minis go, well, when I first saw the Infinity minis, they seemed slender and small. My perception adjusted quickly enough, and now the GW human and near human minis look crude and grotesque to me, like little plastic or pewter troglodytes. The non-human stuff has no point of comparison, so they still look fine. See for yourself.

Yeah I know. Finish painting them.

The Imp of the Perverse said something like that to me just the other day I have something planned. It will make for an entertaining moment, if nothing else. You'll see.

 Dr H wrote:

Like this Doc...

First measure and use the knife to notch the material where you wish to cut. This way you are not off by the width of a pencil line, accidentally of course.

If you do need to use a pencil, remember to make witness marks (the little 'x' )so you know on which side of the pencil line to cut.

I use a version of a 'J' hook for my cutting board. The wooden fence is fixed to the board (an old piece of particle board) , and I use the square against it to make perpendicular cuts. Hold the material flush to the fence and cut away.

You could also combine the square with a triangle to do the same thing.

I don't hold the blade at a high angle like this

But rather a lower angle, like this

This also helps avoid fouling the cuts in foamcore too.

And finally, I do what I'm not supposed to

I hone the blade from time to time to keep it sharp and to make it last longer

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Shows just where I'm going wrong...

...That is the point where I do pretty much none of the above and then roughly measure and cut by eye.

Well, in my defense it is only half a rock. But all those blades come with the do not resharpen warning, I do it anyway. I live dangerously. I also grind down old utility knife blades to make interesting exacto knife blades. I'm what they call a 'bad seed'.

Oh, and PETA.

Can't glue everything together until the interior is all done. Thinking stainless steel sinks for this. Blue tiles for the walls. Toilet color? Hmmm... And the showers, mother of pearl tiles. Because I can.. dream, anyway

And the reserve project

Being able to stand the mini on the walls like that means it will playable. Ha! It'll mean the mini is actually in the space between the walls. Or so goes the theory. Now onto the rest.

Oh, I kind of like some of the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" posters. That and the lettuce bikinis some of them wear hereabouts when protesting. Not that I'm a sexist pig or anything like that

Thanks for the compliments, Noodles and Doc.

So, the shower. Still contemplating the faucet handles, and the stall door. I like the idea of two faucet handles, but a lot of shower faucet handles are single lever these days. And glass doors, but that doesn't seem such a good idea for this piece, even frosted glass. So, More research. Anyway, the start...

Top view for scale.

And a couple of side views to show the shower head and the drain.

The tile is supposed to be mother of pearl. For the showerhead I just filed down the head of a pin-- the kind with the round head-- and bent the shaft to the right angle. Makes for a convincing enough shower head in this scale, methinks. Need to get a better photo of the drain too.

All the bits, and my homebrew probe/hole punch/whatever

I was thinking something like that, but with 2 handles, one above the other (the on/off handles and the water mix handle) as seen in some modern showers.

Of course I missed a beat there. Should have made the drain and backplate hex shaped Hmm, I suppose it is possible to overdue the hexes...

Works out very well. Thanks for the idea The top knob is on/off and of course water flow, the bottom is the mixer for hot/cold. I will need to do some painting on them to indicate that of course. But I'm convinced that these are believable. Pins. Go figure.

Some people make drinking cups from them.

The pins are in fact painted. One of them is brass (the one used for the center handle) and all the plates are paper or plastic and needed paint anyway.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ah so the glass doors.

First the doorway.

Now the door, which is cut out from one of those cheap DVD cases. You know the kind that breaks when you look at it. Yeah. Those.

Hinging this will be..erm, interesting. Mayby I'll use... wait for it... Pins! I like the chrome frame to the thing too. Saw that somewhere during the research. Surprisingly, typing "shower stalls" into a search engine turned up nothing NSFW. Ah well.

Another view to give an idea of scale. As one can see, the shower stall is just right.

For you perverts out there. And I know you're out there...

One more of these doors to do, then the exterior walls with built in shelves and the showers will be done. Then the sinks.

Bottles. You know you could make them out of... Oh... Vik got in there first...

If you carve the shape of the bottle into the end of a piece of sprue you have a nice handle to hold it with. Then once the shape is right, just cut it to length.

Oh, a little SM shampoo bottle would be hilarious. I will have to remember that one.

Thanks. Granny Bars are where you would find Cougars, and not the feline kind . Nite-Kiting is a Class C felony in Maryland.

A q-tip (not sure the UK term... cotton swab on a stick) shaft, or a lollipop handle is about the right diameter for the bottle part. Find a way to put a cap on it, and a label (printed label. There's no way in the nine layers of Hell that I could paint that kind of detail) and I think it might work. Now, those round areas of a sprue piece are about the height and right diameter for the lotion and cold cream jars and tins though. I still have some sprue lying around -- too useful to throw out -- maybe I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the C&C guys. Much appreciated, as always, even if I don't always say it.

Ah no man, you don't want to end up in Supermax. Strangeways is a Club Med facility by comparison.

Anyway, it just occurs to me to use clear plastic straws like those that come with brushes. They may be about the right diameter for bottles ~2-2.3 mm dia. Fill them with a tinted epoxy, make a cap and boom, shampoo bottle. Or roll up clear plastic tape? Hmm, going to try it anyway. But that is down the road. Can't distract myself from the task at hand. Making sinks and toilets thrones.

A class C felony? Really? Umm, I'm at a loss there, or am I missing something...is nite-kiting slang for something I'm not aware of?

Brush protectors are possibly edging towards a tad on the big side, but should be workable.

No not a felony. As slang for anything, nothingt that I am aware of, but y'know, it sounds like it should be.

So more progress, well, of sorts. Proof of concept for the sinks. I used some...wait for it...paper and needles... (Surprised y'all, eh?) 110# paper anyway to make the sink part.

And painted it. For the sink drain I just punched a disc out of that nice chrome contact paper (which I used for the frosted shower door frames too) that I got in the supply drop from the LoER. (A lot of useful stuff in that drop. And I intend to use all of it ) I need to put a few coats of gloss varnish on it of course, to get a glazed porcelain look.

Unsure about the counter top though. Probably just treat it like a laminant surface, which is a pretty common thing in facilities. Although, making it marble might be kind of cool...

Anyway, the sink areas for the comfort station can now proceed, since I've figured out how to to the sinks.

They will have back splashes of course. Mirrors above and I may need to put some sort of cabinets below, so that they will stay in place when I need to take exploded view pictures-- ie the walls are pulled away.

I will add that the one bathroom for the adobe guest-house is starting to creep me out a bit. It is getting too realistic for my eyes. Hmm, maybe the goal should be that people cannot tell it is 28mm scale just from looking at the photos. Now that would be cool.... and a bit creepy too, but mostly cool.

C&C welcomed. Thanks for stopping by.

But here is a bit more. The purple is just rubber band to hold it together. Can't glue it all up until the inside is done. Figured I needed to finish the outside of the comfort station. So I started the roof

Made it to look similar to that of the hab modules of course. Then added what I think will be skylights. But I may make them vents, and put skylights on the slanted parts. Have to play around with that.

Also as seen in the last photo, whether to put windows over the sink and urinal areas? Undecided on that too.

A few shots for scale and comparison with the Hab Module.

Still need the stairs and the intakes for water and electrical, and the out-take for water too.

But it's closer to completion today than it was yesterday, so, me gusta.

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks guys. I went with a mix of vents and skylights.

Hey Adamsouza from Massachusetts, do you know a Bill Souza? I vaguely recall somebody by that name from Massachusetts at the NOVA Open 2012. Can't remember what his army was though.

Anyway, a few WIPs

The skylights don't show as well as they should. Lighting, lighting, lighting. Also the stairs are in place. I simplified them from the orginal plan, and made them solid, so they can provide cover in-game. The *glass* is orange so it matches the original Porta-potty I did with the Hab modules.

EDIT: better look at the skylights/vents... and a need for a little filler work to Going to put solar panels on the sloping portions. I think they'll be a neat ( and one hopes, easy) detail.

Anyway, this is for Vik-- goblin is lower right

Thanks guys and merci beaucoup Morgoth.

Theo, to help undermine your resistance, here is the blog for the Corvus Belli painting genius Angel Giraldez http://studiogiraldez.blogspot.com/. His stuff looks even better in person too. So I hear from, well, everybody.

So, are these believable as solar panels? I need to paint the frame of course, and add some wiring. I have some really thin like 30 gauge copper wire that will be just right, scale-wise.

I know it would be cool to use real panels, like those in solar powered calculators and all. Seriously a solar powered piece of terrain. Yeah. Definitely need to try that sometime. In the future. Gotta finish this first.

How did you do those solar panels? "Just" fancy painting or what else is involved here?

Also, with so much cheap camping equipment around these days, a guy that is half heartedly firm in electrics could probably use some to power his terrain for real...saw so much lanterns or garden lights....

I think it's high definition color printing.

I had no idea it would be a common surname. It certainly isn't around here. Ah well, thanks for the response.

Vik, Morgoth it was 300 DPI printing.. I was trying to hurry things along. I cannot say that I really like the result. But I had an idea during the drive home.

Just score a grid on a piece of clamshell plastic and place it -- scored side down-- over a piece of black (colored in with a sharpie) paper.

I'm liking this much better. So I'll go ahead and revise the panels.

Also started the final details to the exterior

Vents, and Electrical. Also need HVAC and Water entry/exit stuff, then the exterior will be done... except for the painting and perhaps some (printed) signage.

I think you're crazy for scoring a grid in plastic like that.... also that grid is not much better than the print, I think you can improve the print to get a better result, either by adding some DPI, or by scaling it up a bit to make the lines less fuzzy

Given your taste, I am surprised they are not hexagonal little panels in a hexagonal box?

Both look pretty good to me, adding good detail. Your choice I am afraid in the end.

Speaking of Hexagonal, the tiles I can get on Ebay are all square with chipped corners / octagons with 4 small sides.

Hexagonal Solar Panels would look better with your general design though, that's for sure.
You could replace some of the rooftop tiles with Solar Tiles

I remember an image with those hex solar panels, it's from a game or CGI movie... can't put a name or anything around that though.
The hex tiles were on a big panel attached to a thick tube sticking out of the ground...

Maybe the next house/ main clubhouse should have a domed ceiling that's all glass, no exterior windows needed as all the light could come through the roof.

Hex solar tiles in the panel. Never even occurred to me. Derp.

The scored plastic is faster to do than playing around with the printer, at least for me. And I have an, erm, 'economy' printer. Even at high DPI the ink tends to bleed, so really crisp lines don't work out so well. But I still need to print some signs, so maybe I'll revisit the panels, time permitting. I have to get this exterior done ASAp, so I have time to do the interior right, especially the throne.

And hex shaped solar panels... sounds like an array of them would make a nice piece of scatter terrain...

Thanks guys. Lovin' the input

Nice detail work, Red.

As a judge, I can't really offer any help that may give you an advantage over others in the competition, but I'll leave this picture here and you can take *cough* thickness *cough* lip / level of the glass *cough* whatever you can from the image.

For the printer, if your printer sucks (most printers suck), consider a local or online print shop.

If online, you'll really need to combine a lot in one, you can have it printed like superior photo quality, with or without gloss for example, it's going to look a ton better and it's fairly cheap if you can batch it.

Local print shops, almost as good except it's a lot of driving for one solar panel.

Yeah, the solar panes aren't working with the style of build you have here...

Roof mounted hex panels seem the way to go...

but I also wonder if an umbrella style might also work - like you say can be used as scatter terrain and complement some of your other pieces?

Thanks Wolfmaster.

@ Doc: link is broken?

@ Morgoth; Yeah, printing at high DPI on good quality photo paper would solve the ink bleed problem-- assuming the source image is of decent quality. Using a service might help too. But these panels are a minor detail for the building, so I was inclined to stick with what I've already done. The important stuff is the inside. Then Ruglud posted that very useful photo, which changed my mind...

Thanks Ruglud. That first image is perfect inspiration. Those hexes would be perfect. So I'll see what I can come up with tonight. Aggravated an old shoulder injury while splitting wood (Elm, not a very splitty wood either ) , so I am moving very slowly at the moment. Nothing some NSAIDs and rest won't cure. But I did a bit more building beforehand.

However, I am only missing one exterior detail at the moment, the water intake and drain valves. My thinking is use something like what you see on fire engines, with a few valves and gauges-- plus I may find some cheap fire trucks at the local dollar store, saving me a lot of searching/scratch-building.

Here are the WIPs for the other details, a vent, and access panel, and the service entry for the electrical, and the HVAC unit.

Naturally it needs a proper paint job. The bright orange cord is to connect to the generator I built for LoER 8. I suppose I need to build something for a water source too. I was thinking a variant on this, the HIPPO.
Spoiler:

Looks simple enough and fits the theme nicely.

Post by: Red Harvest

Erm, it was supposed to be a heat pump But yeah, air conditioner, that's what I was really going for Thanks guys. It is kind of fun to build these little bits.

Last detail for the exterior is the water intake and drain. A PITA to do, and I had to resort to a very old method of making pipes

Yup. You wrap the paper around the toothpick to get the desired diameter. The advantage though is the thing is solid, so when you cut it, it doesn't flex and mess up the cut.

And the final results minus the valve handles-- still debating those-- before priming etc...

The valve handles will go where you see pins. I copied the designs from fire engine fixtures, or tried to. I need to make/paint gauges for the intake-- that's the single fixture-- too. Oh, and look for some useful signs. Considering that drain is a septic line, I've got all sorts of ideas for that . I need the exterior done this week, so I can focus on the all important interior, especially the throne rooms.

I've just been looking at stuff around me for inspiration on this. The shortcuts may come as the deadline looms ever closer though. From experience, it'll be a rushed paint job.

No worries, there will be a few rivets. Those storage tanks in the first post of this thread. Lots of rivets in those. Sewing pins. All of them. When I rivet, gets real.

In the Cheerful Brightness of the near future, Apple is long gone. So too is Microsoft. Yay. Anyway the Infinity color is that light blue in the 'N'. Or Orange. Not sure which.

Okay. I left in the beige, but I used one with more yellow, less red. See pix below. Had a bit of insomnia, so made a tiny bit more progress.

Here we go, and a prototype of the sinks

First you take some plastic blisters from medications. Claritin in this case. And glue them to your counter top. I used wood glue, since it will hold this plastic to paper fairly well. Then paint the outside of the pill blister, not the inside. See, still beige, just not pinkish.

And you have nice porcelain sinks, the kind that mount under the counter. In a good scale too, as you can see. And we've already seen how the faucets will look, more or less. So, once the sinks are done, I guess onto hand dryers, then urinals and the Thrones themselves. Still baffled about how I might do the latter two. Well, I have a month. And I can always add a few other details while brainstorming. Towel hooks, cabinets, vents, lots of vents...

And you could always use those pill blisters as glass bowls too, were you to need some.

I like that you painted the outside of these pill- thingies... this gives everything that nice pearly glaze without using any glaze at all!!! I think with hand driers there is no need for towel hooks...BUT... I think hooks on the inside of the cabins for your coats and such stuff is always welcome....(I like to hang my backpacks there...as the ground is really no option with some places....)

also...that selection of tweezers is quite an eyeful! if I ever get my hands on some of these medical tweezers I surely will hold on tight to them... these are very useful! I own currently only two tweezers you have to press to open... so they are closed most of the time... very useful for pressing stuff together and holding stuff for a longer time if it needs to be...did you ever had any hurting problems of materials with these black and red clamps you have shown there? I was always a bit hesitant to get me some of these...they are very strong tho...
and the crocodile clamps... why on earth did I never came up with that conversion idea of yours???

Vik, for the clamps, use something between the pieces being glued and the clamp jaws to prevent damage to the pieces, generally a section of plasticard will do. Or popsicle sticks. I'll post a photo later showing what I mean. We call the little ones 'alligator clamps' BTW. I put them on bamboo skewers. They are great for holding pieces for painting and airbrushing too.

Of course you could use any thing other than the popsicle sticks.

I suppose you guys are familiar with the Leman Russ tank, specifically its size. The model is 20 years old (almost. I had one in 1996, so at least 18 years old ). Here it is for scale comparison

Some more work on the sinks.

And an exploded view

Looking for a better mirror, or better mirror material. That is just cut from a toothpaste box. I am not sure about the lightbulbs. I liked the idea of globe light fixtures... maybe with some paints and washes... Or maybe they are just too large.

totally knew what you meant mate! of course working with PVA will be a pita when you use wooden popsicle sticks... for this I would use some cut off of PC rather...

the mirror looks good, tho I think cam raises a good point here!...
the lights and the sinks are really good looking additions... it is rather an architectural work than a mere hobby project in my view...

what totally disturbed me tho is the fact that the LR has a massive barrel...er rod...for his cannon... you being the details man and all that... but as you stated it is from a totally different period in your life...

So back from the 63 hour power outage. Fortunately I have a back-up generator so I was able to run pretty much everything. The AC and the refrigerator and the freezer most importantly. However, I accomplished nothing for the entire week :(

Vik, in scale, that battle cannon would be a 14" gun ( The Bismarck had 15" guns, by way of comparison) on the Russ. The recoil would flip that puny tank, and then some, or simply destroy it. That is a 'real' Leman Russ too. Never understood why GW based it upon a French tank. ( the Char B1, If you don't already know) But my scratchbuilts were close copies. My goal was to have them on the table and my opponent would be unable to tell which was real and which was scratchbuilt. So, I had to, well, hold back. It is a pretty lame model. FW tanks are sooo much cooler.

Tried that Cam. Not so good. Last idea is to get that mirrored plastic that craft stores sell, when I get to one. I know they make it, I just do not know how thick it is. Oh, and those foil balloons. A piece of one of those might work... I'll look into it this week. time permitting. The light globes are 24cm in diameter, scale wise, so way too large to have a pair of them. So that'll change too.

And I messed up the doorframes, and rather than try to correct, I simply re-built.

This way I get the sliding doors like on the hab modules.

Had to redo the shower doors too, to make things fit.

Fortunately everything else fits in the updated floorplan

So I did not lose too much. The exterior is essentially all done, except for painting, and the solar panels, and some signage and of course a few rivets where appropriate A little more work on version 2 and I will be ahead of where version one is. Version 2 looks like an improvement too. So happy about that. And apparently when I know exactly what to do, I can work less slowly

And sad news. Corvus Belli is shutting down their official forums. They are 'out-sourcing' to this http://www.data-sphere.net/ This means I will want to re-post some of what's in my terrain thread there. I am wondering, do I post it here, in this thread, or in my thread for Infinity stuff in the Corvus Belli forum here on DakkaThanks for stopping by. Most of it would be WIP stuff, so I'm thinking here in this thread is the better plan. Thoughts?

Good to have you back on track!

Rengineered version looks, if possible, even better than the first, and having working sliding doors are good enough to justify the extra work.

As for posting, for what is worth, one blog here for WIPs and debate, and final/finished pics either in the Showcase or the Infinity thread? (Works for me!)

Oh my... not only is that terrain incredibly cool, its insanely realistic. I don't believe you when you say you're making terrain. I know you're just an architect designing models to try to get these buildings built for real.

Thanks Rogue W. Lovin' that avatar, BTW.

Littletower: That sounds the most pragmatic. I'll set up a thread at that newer forum too, just to help beef up the terrain section for a while, I just hope the other really good scratch builders on the Infinity forum also move to the DataSphere.

Doc, here seems a better place than the LoER thread. A photo of the tiles printed on 110# paper --( 200 gsm Google tells me) Though now that I'm looking at paper weights, I see a 140#/260gsm paper. I'll need to look for some of that-- and the tiles printed on photo paper.

Big difference, even though same file, same printer, only paper is different. I sprayed gloss polyurethane sealer on the regular paper.

I've pretty much caught up at this point

Everything lust looks, neater? Seems to fit together better? Ah well, it's an improvement. I'll take it. Just a bit more painting for the interior. I might even finish on time.

Also, pondering the ceiling.

If done neatly, it will show up in photos where the outer walls are removed. Otherwise it won't really be visible. But It will make for some nice photos anyway.

Thanks for stopping by

Ha, I just replied over there.
The short version is that oil- / white spirit- based varnish does not result in any bleeding and seals the print from any further bleeding.

I see what you mean on the paper difference. Not good. I don't have any photo paper to play with, but air-brushed on, I reckon that humbrol varnish would seal that too, with no bleeding.

Keep at it. Good progress.

RogueW, I'll check out your thread then. Colors? click the gallery image link below my avatar. Just like those buildings. This'll be part of that set.

And the best way to do mirrors is to...wait for it... use real mirrors. Derp.

These are mosaic tile mirror bits, and they are not too thick at all. Also, for light fixtures

And when put together I get this

A quick overhead shot

I may just get this done in time. The only challenging detaila are the thrones themselves. All else is fairly straightforward. Famous last words eh?

I did in fact move my thread from the old Infinity forum. 40 or so posts. One after another now. No automatically appended next post function. Phew! I'll cut that number down and start bringing more of those pix here. There are some neat WIP shots.

amazing, red!

the TP dispenser

and while I at first sight thought the mirrors looked a tad thick...I had to change my mind... it looks perfect... as do the lights above...

I too think dumbing your old stuff in your wip thread is the way too go... but the important thing is to conserve it as to not get it lost in the warp....

as for the LR guns... well... that´s a discussion no one needs to get foam around his mouth ... GW must be consisting of some peeps in desperate needs for compensating....

ah... one thing... the actual thrones are still kept a secret? looks like we only see the actual whole in the wall for now.... right?

May I say that your wife has excellent taste?

Thanks guys. It is a fun challenge to figure how to do these things. Trying to keep in scale is a nice discipline for a change.

Vik, in no particular order: About the LR see here http://www.gocomics.com/tomthedancingbug/2006/09/16/

I have made 2 attempts to come up with a workable way to make 4 thrones. Failed twice. But I'll keep at it. I need a way to make them identical, eh?

I moved most of the thread over to the DataSphere at the request of a few Infinity forumites. I think I'll start bringing the WIPs here once the contest is over.

The Dispenser painted. I put the image I used as a guide in the first photo. It is between my take on it and the Odalisque mini. I'm quite happy with it.

And now they are all in place

And a question. Does the object next to the faucet look like a soap dispenser?

That is what I am going for. I cannot say that I am sold on the metallic though. Plus most styles have the dispenser nozzle higher up, on the pump part. C&C Welcome. That is my "for experimenting" sink, not part of the Comfort Station, BTW. Although if it ends up being nice enough, I'll find a use for it.

It does.

It might be true that usually the nozzle is part of the pump piece, but I figure that would be because it makes for a simpler mechanism - and thus cheaper/more efficient to build, put together and refill once in use - and not an actual requirement. An alternative design, that sacrificed some utility for "aesthetics", could certainly look like that. And design does tend to get in the way of efficiency of design/build/use sometimes...

 Red Harvest wrote:

With that I agree, for both the TP and Soap dispenser, actually. They appear too roughened up for the overall look, maybe a burnished stainless steel would maybe fit better, IMO, with the rest of the facilities.

As for using it in the Comfort Station (and just to go along with the detailing level displayed so far, not because it wouldn't look great), I'd say a "fixed" version would be in order over a free standing one on the countertop, but that is just nitpicking...

Red Harvest's Terrain & Painting Blog-- 13 August Mobile Brigada WIP @ 2014/07/24 20:27:53

Post by: Red Harvest

Thanks guys. Re the fixed v. free-standing. There are a number of soap dispensers like that which are fixed. But if the detail is not obvious at first glance, then it is not working right. Wall mounted will convey fixed much better. I was going for this, more or less.

Painting burnished steel is beyond me at the moment. I would have to go NMM to get something close. Maybe I'll experiment, time permitting.

I should have made the stuff out of heavy foil. Saved time on painting....Ooh, there is a thought...

Back to the cutting and drilling board. I am so glad I got a new pin vise before all this started. Getting my money's worth

Anyway, this should work, or something close to it

Anyway, RL interferes again so less progress than desired. And 1 week to go. Finished the soap dispensers and the hand dryers. Maybe they get re-painted if time permits.

And the soap dispenser, wall mounted, between the faucets.

The overhead shot. Starting to look interesting.

It would be more than passing strange to be certain.

Thanks GrimDork. I'm huffing and puffing my way there. Hope the ol' ticker holds out.

And yeah, thrones. I made 5. You can roll these, like dice. I call it the game of... well, I'll stop there

Also added a hook to the back of each stall door. Details, details...

And here one is, partially installed. I need to finish the flush valve detail and it will be done ¡Por Fin! then 3 more to go, so not so done.

Unobstructed view

and a few more...

The seat looks too thick though. May have to cut it down. Perhaps hinge them so they lift? I've opted for white porcelain. This was my inspiration here:

I should finish. After the thrones, very little remains to do before final painting, and sign printing. Just a few lockers, a bench and a cabinet, but this stuff is all rectangular and easy.

Thanks for stopping by.

I think the thick toilet sea is fine, especially since its a comfort station, you know how the old fogies have those padded seats in their bathrooms .

The stalls look spot on. So much detail here its crazy. When you get done with this display you really need to take pics and create a pamphlet like they have when selling a home. That way if you ever go to the game store with the terrain you can give copies to your opponent along with your list. Make sure it has listed the square footage, bathrooms, ac etc.

Actually GrimDork, it is an American Standard. I see them in newer facilities. The thinking, as I understand it, is that it makes for easier floor cleaning. I suppose as long as you don't mount it to drywall only, it'll hold up.

Shadow Cpt, Bioshock you say? Have a look at Dr. H's bathroom bits. They are Bioshock inspired. And for sale.

Comfort station is just a euphemistic expression Theo. They are generally anything but comfortable. But "future" (hand waves) so this one is. It needs a Robot Bathroom Attendent though. Sigh, no time to do that.

I am not a realtor good sir. But it would be funny...

Also, Operation:Icestorm. You know you want to try it... I think a Quick Starter Rulebook will be available soon enough, so you can look at that before you decide about getting Icestorm

Thanks, and I was thinking lights above the stall doors ;red for occupied, green for open and yellow for enter at your own risk. XD Time however, says no, probably not :(

Thanks Jabbakahut. I am not a fan of ginormous stairs in most cases. So... actually we used to use small d6s to build platforms for minis on stairs and slopes. This was just the logical next step IMHO.

And for grins, since this a contest about building Thrones

How about...
Spoiler:

A Golden One

You must admit, 10,000 years is an EPIC case of constipation.

And we're back

First, since Vik mentioned it, the towel hook for the shower

And the Thrones are in-stalled (pun intended) and the flush valves hooked up. Sadly, no running water...yet
An unobstructed view

And the completed sections

The seat is up? Must be the men's side.
Close out with the overhead

And this will be it. I want to put in a few lockers and a bench and hamper in the empty area, time permitting. Then do all the remaining interior details (light switches, outlets, wall vents...) and photograph everything together before I seal it up and finish off the exterior, which only requires painting and signage.

Thanks for stopping by.

My painting skills are sub-par these days Vik, so I'm experimenting with using a printer to paint for me. One door closes so I open another. But ran out of time and had to free-hand the numbers and lettering/symbols on this one.

Now a brief pause, a much needed pause, then I want to finish that little scale guest-house I started. I think there are some folks who expect to see my work at the NOVA Open tournament we are having here in DC at the end of August. I don't want to disappoint. So I need to get something transportable via subway... the Hab modules and a few other bits might be perfect... Hmm, maybe not so much of a rest after all.

A perfect quote. and Thanks.

The question, why is she screaming? I think I'll name that mini Victoria Plumb.

New contest is up here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/609100.page#7093794 The theme is Roads. Lot of room for interpretations and imaginations there.

I may try to build something myself, but RL is kicking the backside this month and into next. I have a tournament here in DC that I am volunteering at, and I feel compelled to put some sort of terrain together for a table, or part of one. So there's that.

I'm going to start moving some of the earlier stuff I did on the Infinity forums over here, so y'all can look forward to that-- although it seems I have moved most of it already. Hmmm. And watch the painfully slow process of paint appearing on 'Victoria', who is still not finished :( But is an excellent unit in game. Quite lethal.

Use sand -- tend to use sand from those water filters, Brita filters, or just regular sand you buy at the DIY store-- but... screen it through, well, screens, to filter out the larger grains. Then use a screen with smaller openings, etc. Repeat until you have grains of uniform size, and size that you want. Then apply a thick coat of latex acrylic interior house paint, and pour the sand onto it. As seen. it is best done in sections. And I write lots of reminders to myself.

Hope this helps.

One more thing, yay, progress.

Primer coat on my building. Next up will be some texturing, but I think it will be a lighter texturing than that which is shown in the montage above.

And the terrace too

I tried to play around with the hexes to 'break' the pattern as suggested, but was not satified with anything that I did, so I'm just going to leave them as is and think about doing something along those lines for a later project.

Weirdest stairs which I have ever built.

Thanks for stopping by.

Note to self: domes are next...

Stairs look cool, as do finished buildings, as do the more recent buildings.

Hey, could you use cardboard to tile a floor, then pour water effects over it? Or would the water effects affect the cardboard and ruin it? I igure if the cardboard didn't come loose or curl, then it would be very well protected under it's layer of flood water, so could be used for a ruined, sunken temple or something.

Thanks Grim and Warboss.

Not sure what you're saying Val. You would seal any paper product before pouring water effects on it. I had an, erm, incident when I did not seal something completely (see below). However, yes,I believe that it would work.

Here are a few photos of something like what I think you describe:

I glued in the tiles, printed on 110# (220 gsm?) paper which I have sealed with a water based polyurethane-- airbrushed on. Using a bristle brush will mess up the printing. Then I poured the water effects (A 2 part epoxy called Super-Glaze)

Note that I did not seal the paper as well as I thought. You can see where the super glaze bled through and left dark spots on the tiles.
Here is where I add ripples to the water

The products I used are visible in the background.
The final piece

So a thinner layer of water effects, or several coats of gloss polyurethane over the tiles may work.

How did you get the fountain spray to stay in that shape while it dried?

If you look carefully at this photo you can see the fishing line I used. You could also use transparent thread. The line weight (IIRC this is 100# test) depends upon how thick the water spout is.

Basically, I embedded the line in the fountain spout and the epoxy water effect then used the gloss super heavy gel to get the effect. The stuff is quite sticky. It will dry clear. The white blobs adhered to the fishing line are super heavy gel. See photo above for what the container looks like.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Found a few hours tonight. Did a little more work on the guest house. The bathroom and interior walls are dis-assembled. I'm re-thinking how to go about making them playable.

Now to figure out how to surface that patio.

And on the waterfall I started for LoER 10 but got nowhere fast due to RL interference.

I may adjust it to be a waterfall with hanging gardens in place of the braziers I was going to add.

And finally, some bases for the Infinity figs. I've been meaning to do this for a while. This is about 1/4 of what I'll eventually need by the time the armies are all fleshed out ( or pewtered out). Still, progess.

I have to say whenever I look into your thread it is a bit like a summer holiday... your stuff really reminds me of these all inclusive hotel complexes...they ooze an air of richness... I needed to tell you this... as so often we say awesome...but I wanted to describe my feelings when looking at your works...!

also... even while I knew that fishing line and so on could create and guide thin watereffects... this looks absulutly brilliant... my only fear always would be that it wouldn´t dry out clear completely... this would probably make me sit by and watch everything dry out...as if looking at the work would speed up any drying process and would insure quality

The dark spots on the paper from where the water effect bled through actually makes it more realistic, as if there were air bubbles that the light is passing through in the water. I see this effect in the pools at my condo all the time.

Yeah, some folks commented that it was mold/mildew on the tile, or a bad tile job... rather than be upset, I decided it was serendipitous. Sometimes you just have to embrace the unexpected results.

Bright colors and clean lines, Vik, that's all it is. Now, as far as watching the stuff dry... One thing to do is let the gel get a bit drier and tackier, then gently pluck and pick at it (with tweezers and a dental pick, as seen in the photo) to make it look more turbulent. But it does dry clear. Then you need a very light white drybrushing to give it a foaming/whitewater effect. The Urban Oasis is one of my favorite pieces actually. Plus, it lights up, as seen in this WIP

Water effects are a lot of fun to make. Everyone should try it sometime.

And the modernistic approach to the houses and buildings, I see stackable components? Apartment building?

The hab modules can stack. The rest not so much. But some sort of apartment building might be cool to build at some point. It's on the list now

Vik, Everybody should try some sort of water effect, even if it is just multiple layers of a gloss finish on something.

The water effect is just perfect. I actually think the tone variations on the bottom add to the overall effect, and the spot-on ripples close the deal.

Tuts and steps-by-steps are great, and will have to give a try to some of those ideas sooner or later, I'll look around into product availability any time soon and follow your advice.

Thanks. The two part epoxy is available at any DIY. The other stuff is from a craft store or art supply store.

Anyway, belated, but as promised, my little dome tutorial.
Here is a quick tutorial on how to build stepped domes. Since I am not so articulate, I'll let the photos say it all.

Once stacked together, I fill the gaps (that's the yellowish stuff) smooth it with a nail file, and done

I take it what you really did was calculate the diameter of each layer of the dome using Pythagoras (blue line AB being the diameter of the disc (chord), image below) incrementally for each layer, like so:

no doubt it's quicker and more accurate than doing it graphically.

That building is looking insanely cool. The fountains and steps are excellent.

Thanks guys.

Noodles: Well, no. Graphically is quicker, and more accurate, since there is no rounding off of numbers etc. I drew the levels (the horizontal lines in photo#1) Then the arc of the dome with a compass. I already knew the height and diameter of the dome, a bit of trial and error gave me the radius of the circle. However, using the Pythagorean would eliminate the need for the trial and error to find the radius for the dome in the vertical plane. I'll try it next time. Thanks.

Where the arc intersected the horizontal, I dropped a vertical line down to the next horizontal. Repeat until all steps are drawn. Photo #2 shows me taking measurements directly from the drawing for the radius of each level. If you look you can see a cross below the dome. That is the center point of the circle. The nice thing about a measured drawing like that is you can take measurements directly from it.

Then I just make the discs for each level, stack them on a spindle, tidy up the thing and boom. Dome. And then cut the oculus for it.

Photos of the completed building are here Scroll down a bit.

A little work on the patio. Based on previous C&C, I decided to go with something other than a regular hex pattern.

That's just a quick base coat to give an idea of final color.

Nice patio. Great work on that building.

I like how you did the ripples on the water's surface. Will remember that for when I ever get around to making terrain.

Interesting to see how the domes are built up too.

why didn't I get in the talent line you were in. No instead I got in the line where they taught you how to pull lint out of your belly button. Seriously awesome work on the water effects and patios.

Really? Protip: use a Q-tip dipped in isopropanol to clean your navel. Another protip: don't use it to clean your ears afterwards.

For the ripples, you may need several applications to build up the effect, and a day or so between layers for drying. Water effects will require patience.

Thanks Cam and Theo and Doc.

The pattern is a result of suggestions from several sources, including MagosBiff90's (Hah, you thought I didn't see that?) to do something other than very regular hex patterns.

Minimal hobby time, but there is this,

The questions. How does the window with the panes look compared to the open ones? (never mind the crappy quaity of the mock-up.) Is the texture/color believable for adobe or stucco?

If the texture is good, I'll be able to finish the exterior of this thing quickly.
