Hi! Only recently got back into the hobby after a break of about 6 years. Really enjoying all the great kits and models available these days. Ive always wanted a large blood angels army painted to a display/showcase standard so might take me a while but theres no rush
Anyway, heres my first mini in 6 years. Hope you like him

The second looks just as good as the first. My only suggestion would maybe be to go up one more level on the highlighting on the Chaplain's helmet. I think making it more ivory bone wouldn't make it so seamless in color to the parchment. I'd also take a micropen and add some script to said parchment.

This is some really nice looking stuff overall, I can't really offer much advice or suggestions. Only thing I would do personally is add little bits of weathering to the models, but that's just me. Most people prefer to keep theirs clean.

Halfords grey primer
Army painter pure red
2 x washes of seraphim sepia
3 thin coats of evil sunz scarlet, leaving wash in recesses
Highlight of wild rider red
..........................................
If its a character or focal point model I continue with...
Sharper highlight of troll slayer orange
Then a 50/50 mix of white and troll slayer orange on the very tips of parts
All models are varnished with testors dullcoat.
Hope that helps

Absolutely gorgeous stuff! So you quit painting for 5 years and come back and your quality is hotter than molten lava. I think we should all just quit painting for a few years and try this technique out!
I am curious about those clear stands inside your case. The risers, or acryllic stands that someone of your squads are sitting on. did you make these?
85311
Post by: Floyd73
Thankyou!!
I got i to the hobby in 1993 at the age of 11 and was really into it up until the age of about 15 when I quit all GW and regular model building.
Around the age of 24 I got the modelling bug again and ended up collecting a small Dark Angels army but soon lost interest again and sold it on. Thats when I started building full size prop replicas and have since started my own company selling props and kits.
Now here we are, 6/7 years later and Ive got the bug again, hopefully for much longer than last time. Even though ive not been painting miniatures in my time away I have been refining techniques that i feel help me in miniature painting.
The acrylic stands are from Ebay. Heres the link... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370606849705?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Once you start down the FW path, it's hard to turn back. Shoulder pads are just the gateway resin.

Haha, well after the FW rhino kit I got i wasnt too impressed with the quality, but im going to give them a second chance, and maybe a third....and fourth

Post by: whalemusic360
The Extra Armor kits are very old, I would expect warping to be the norm on them. Any resin kit is going to take more work then plastic thought. Try something like a Contempor Dread, they are great!
Edit: You had the MkI rhino, my bad. I actually had some issues with that kit too, not sure what that was about.

Bloody hell mate those honour guard are stunning, as is the rest of your army.
Only thing I'm not too keen on is the black hands on the termies and I prefer power weapons to be more glowy, but that is personal preference. Would be nice to see some more yellow in there for old skool goodness as your captain is brilliant.
Nitpicking though, these are brilliant. Keep them coming!

Nice looking models after coming back into the hobby. One comment though, the infantry (tac squad and assault) seems a little bit monotonous compared to the rest of the units. It could just be the full red paint scheme used but I think the pauldrons of the general infantry could use something to brighten their day like a white decal or bright outer highlight.
To me, the lower colour variety in the general infantry seems to take a step back from the rest of the great looking army.
85311
Post by: Floyd73
Thanks for your input meaples. I do reserve the fancy painting and extra highlights etc for the higher ranked members so i guess the regular infantry suffers, but in a way i like that, shows they are just the standard grunts

Beautiful Blood Angels!! Any way you could tell me your technique for the wing and skull pieces for the Death Company (And the rest of the army)? That portion looks beautiful and I have always struggled with it.
85311
Post by: Floyd73
Thanks! To paint the wings I used a basecoat of the fang, a wash of nuln oil then repaint each feather with the fang again leaving the wash in the reccesses. Then I mix in russ grey and apply this nearer the tip, build up to neat russ grey then add white towards the tip.
The same technique is used on the skulls, only using balor brown, agrax earthshade and bleached bone.

Where did you get the little clear plastic shelves?
88815
Post by: mhacdebhandia
Those clear plastic shelves look like standard retail display risers - imagine some ceramic mugs or something on them in a gift shop, you know?
Usually you can buy them piecemeal from companies which specialise in display items - a quick google led me to this company and their page of acrylic risers:
http://www.collectingwarehouse.com/Product-Home-Page/Acrylic-Risers/
Edit: Also, these Blood Angels look great and take me right back to when I was first encountering the hobby in the early Nineties.

Your painting is wonderful. I'm pretty new to the hobby and painting (I've done 1 tac squad, 1 dreadnought and almost finished 5 snipers) so I have a few questions if you have the time:
1. What brushes do you use? I noticed that you use spray after the primer and then touch up so I'm assuming it's not airbrushed beyond the spray can?
2. How did you do your white on the apothecary? The white I have been doing ends up chalky...
Thank you! And great stuff!

Thanks for the kind words!
1) I use windsor and newton brushes mainly, a 0, 00 and 000 size. Ive never used an airbrush, I prime grey (spray), spray red, base coat, wash, basecoat tidy, highlight, varnish.
2) The white was a basecoat of skull white spray, then wash with a mix of nun oil and a tiny bit of "the fang". I then tidied everything with skull white with a brush then left it as you can't highlight white
hope that helps!

I only get around 4 hours a night to paint due to my full time job so it can take a while for me to finish a unit/model.
A character takes me around 14 hours, a 5 man squad around 20 hours, a rhino sized tank about 20 too. A large display model can be closer to a month.

I basecoat them warlock purple (old paint) over the black primer > nuln oil wash over the purple > warlock purple layer (leaving the wash in the recesses) > mix 50/50 skull white and warlock purple and highlight the top of each twist.

On a side note, the display case in green doesn't look so good with the models given it's "retro" look. You'll probably outgrow it soon - should look into getting one of the commercial display cases.

Thanks! The tank weathering was achieved using skavenblight dinge and leadbelcher mix sponged on, then highlights of just leadbelcher. Over that I used oil paints to add streaks and dirt etc.

Very nice too. Are these old models one's you've had stored away or have you been picking up the older models as/when you've seen them on ebay?
Very cool thematic army.

Just popped in to comment on that red power armoured captain/something with a yellow bolter and a powerfist, on the first page of the thread.
Awesome, simply awesome. It's like I'm looking at a cover of a Codex from the start of the 90's, has such a nice retro feel to it. Even brought memories back from those days.

Thanks guys! The older models I've been picking up from Ebay, sadly i saved nothing from my early warhammer days.

Ah I'm glad it sparked that feeling of nostalgia as he is based on the 2nd edition box art

Ahh, the reds are soo nice. The crisp painting looks great on those 2nd edition tacticals!
I gotta ask though, I saw your display cabinet. And I really like it! did you buy it like that? or did you pimp it yourself?

Love it! So awesome to see the Captain of the 2nd Company, " The Blooded", done up properly.
Well done sir! I just finished up painting my own Blood Angels captain as well, though I'm currently working on his base to really finish him completely.
I built Captain Sendini, Keeper of the Arsenal, Commander of the 5th Battle Company, " Daemonbanes".
Here's the progress thread for my captain build. I'd love to get your feedback as well if I could trouble you for it, Floyd73.

Can't wait to see more of your 2nd Company and hope i can make my 5th Battle company look as nice as yours.

I really like the understated gold. What's your recipe for it?

Thanks! Its just retributor armour > agrax earth shade wash > Retributor armour layer > liberator gold highlights.

Looking forward to more updates. I'll be embarking on a new Blood Angels Librarian build in the near future myself. Currently awaiting the arrival of parts to begin the build.
Your work here has been a big help in keeping me motivated to keep chipping away at my Blood Angels backlog there Floyd. Keep up the great work.

Tycho looks smashing. He's one of my favourite BA characters, they should've changed the fluff to make it the hit he took from the Nerf bat disfigured him though...

Heheh, in all seriousness though those assault marines look lovely. Not exciting as you say, maybe, but regardless the cleanliness and attention given to even the grunts makes them a squad worth displaying Good stuff.

I saw this thread in the showcase forum and thought "oh Blood Angels are cool, let's see what this guy's done with his". I've just been through the whole thing and may I say sir, you have an exceptional talent and have really reinforced the idea of Blood Angels being absolutely awesome.
I particularly love the librarian (I'm now 20, but back when I was 11 I started off collecting Ultramarines and have always had fondness for blue armour...) and your death company guys are beautiful.
It was a real pleasure to look through this thread, I'll certainly be checking in on this every so often. You've inspired me to get something out of a box and paint it!

So sorry but I really can't remember where I got the head from. All I do know is that I sculpted the hair so was a bald head.

No worries, I think I know which head it is...hair looks good though - looks like it was apart of the model.

Post by: lipsdapips
Isn't that one of the bare heads from the plastic commander box? I didn't even notice it was a kitbash until I saw the comments
3687
Post by: Red__Thirst
Yes it is, it's the bald head with bionic eye from the Plastic Captain single mini kit, or as I've come to call it, the "$15.00 bits box". Combi Plasma, Combi Melta, storm bolter, lightning claw, power fist, power sword, some suitably cool power armor legs and an excellent caped torso, a variety of cool heads, bolt pistol, plasma pistol, cool eagle head backpack, and a bunch of other very cool little bits and bobs in there.
I didn't recognize the head at first, then when he said he sculpted the hair on there, I went to check and sure-enough, I have two of those heads in my bits box, sans hair of course. I'll also note that the powerfist on that model is also from the same captain box.
I'll echo everyone else, fantastic model and great execution too. So sublimely captures the old 2nd edition Blood Angels aesthetic. Great work sir.
Inspires me to keep painting on my recently re-started Blood Angels army as well.
Take it easy and please keep sharing your work, Floyd.

I also painted up the 5 "meat shield" guys for a devastator squad plus the melta bomb cherub. Nothing too exciting here but still important i feel.

Hmmm, where to start....
This is one of the finest wargaming armies I've seen painted in all of my time gaming (at this point only 20+ years and counting).
The brushwork is phenomenal and thankfully not overdone (as is supremely frequent nowdays). Crisp, beautiful, perfectly executed. Bases are wonderful, simple but tie the entire force together - hugely happy to not see idiots leaping off 10" plinths of stone!. Your attention to the proper original Blood Angels unit markings, colours and organization is sublime.
Seemless interspersion of various models from various lines (and thankfully not too many of the wildly over-the-top sculpts which are becoming more prominent). This army should serve as a "how to" for anyone looking to paint a wonderful wargaming army.
There are times when you don't need to push the dial to 11 and go absurd...and this is one of those times. This is a perfectly executed 10. Top marks across the board, exemplifying everything that this hobby should be about. Wonderful stuff.

Post by: Floyd73
Wow! Thank you for those VERY kind words Elbows! I've never been a fan myself of over-the-top armies/miniatures. I think there's quality in classy, almost basic models which is the exact approach i take with every unit for this army. Really glad it's noticeable

So clean and smooth! Can't wait to see some army shots of these guys. Really nice work on the scrolls and parchments too.
Only criticism (more a suggestion) - the right shoulder on the Libby Dread looks a bit plain... Perhaps some unit marking or personal heraldry would work nicely?

Thanks! Yeah I did think that about the librarian shoulder after uploading the photos, kinda wish Id added an emblem or something there now. If it bugs me enough I may add one later

Delicious...though I still don't like the "sniper rifle" style lascannons. They just look freakin' weird. It works for the heavy plasma gun, but the lascannons are super odd when modeled like that.
