Post by: Tonio

I've got a bunch of project in front of me, both model and terrain wise, spanning multiple game systems. I needed a place to collate everything, so here it is!

Right now, I'm working on a Rivet Wars diorama for a small contest on CMON. It's a small trench scene, between a Blight mobile artillery piece and some Allied troopers.

First I have the general shape cut in the foam, then sanded. I cut the place for the trench, and also roughed up the top to have space for pool of mud and water. I also did the planking for the trench in balsa.

Here, I smoothed the rough cut and filled the unwanted holes with wood and epoxy putty. I added tracks's marks on the left where the Blight model will go in putty, and also the posts that will hold the barbed wire.

Final texturing with different grit of sand. I think it's a bit too coarse, but i'll try to smooth it up a bit when I will apply the mud effect.

Same step as before, but with the models added in. They aren't glued, just pinned, to have them paintable separately.

Next up, painting. I already primed and brown basecoated the terrain piece, but nothing photo worthy. I'll start work on the models soon enough, but I'm still not sure on what scheme to use: the official studio one or something custom. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Onward with the paint. This first picture is just the earth sections, so it's pretty much all browns. It's fine, I think, but I hope the mud effet I'll add later will make it a bit more interesting.

On this pic, I've painted the wood parts. Base coat, light drybrushing and some pigments to work on the shadows.

Easter weekend was all but productive, but I was finally able to put brush to model today during nap time. I went with the studio colours in the end, as time is getting short and tinkering with a variant would just have gotten me late.

So here is a first wip of the models. I mostly worked on the Allied troopers. Their uniform is done, and I am now moving to leather and faces.

New WiP pic: Allied troopers done, Blight driver/shooter in progress. Only two days left, and I'm out of the house for most of those. I'll need to cut corner for the contest pictures, but I'll put a nicer finish on it once that is done.

Here is last night work. I came in late and couldn't do much, so tonight will need to be really productive, as it's the last day to enter.

First, the Blight artillerist advanced a lot. I have the eyes left to do, as well as the various gold trinkets and the gun. Then I need to rush the cab.

I also placed half of the barbed wire and weathered it. It might need a bit more, so I'll do it when I pose the second row. The killed Allied trooper is now glued in, waiting for the resin to drown him on top of all the shots he took. The joint between the model and the base will be hidden with a mud mix before pouring the resin.

I'm all done, but probably too late. My picture was uploaded just a bit after 12, so the date on the page is May 1st. Too bad. :(

I would still appreciate if anybody could go on the CMON page and vote, as I'm curious to see how I would have ranked.

Here are the pictures. I'm not too fond on the lightning of the overall one, but I'm happy with the 3 close-ups.

Rating has ended on the Rivet Wars contest, and I got an overall 8.5, which is my highest score on CMON ever, and ranked me 6th out of 144 entries. Not bad for a first diorama! It is also over the contest threshold of 7.0, so I got me a little Chibi Dust adventurer in the mail.

Next project: painting an Orcnar starter for the game Relics, by Tor Gaming. I tried that game last year, and fell in love with the twisted fluff and cool rule system. I painted one of my Britanan model when I got them, but other projects got in the way. Now, with their new crowdfunding going on to help produce the last models from the first book, I got the urge to paint some more Relics goodness and get playing. As the Orcnar starter is less models, and easier to paint, I went with them, and I'll do the Britanan after.

The first model I tested my colour scheme on is a Docga. Those are giant Orcnar hound-like creature, that act as fast and violent flankers. The base is 40mm.

Next up, the second Docga is done. I only have the basing and the LoS marking to do, but I'll wait for the rest of the starter to be done before. In the back, you can see the other 4 models in the starter that already got some coats on.

Two projects this weekend. First, I did the base coats and the bases on all the models from the Britanan starter, to have some playable opponents for my Orcnar and for demos. I'll come back to the detailing and shading later. The second picture is a comparison shot between a basic model done this weekend (left), and my fully painted test model for the army. There is a difference, butI think the baseic models will do the job for demos until I have time to come back to them.

Second project: converting some Doomfire Warlocks for my Dark Elves. I must admit that I am not a fan of their heads. I understand the concept of the flowing/spirity hairs, but I don't like how it looks, and I don't really like their faces either. Instead, I wanted to give them a mysterious/mystic look, using hooded heads. As hoods don't really stand free like that, I wanted to add a vest or a cloak. That was my basic concept.

Here is my first try. I used a Wood Elves' hooded head, from the Glade Guard kit. For the vest/capes, I went with the Dark riders cloaks. My own DR are the old models and don't have cloaks, so I don't think it will be too misleading. I also used the naked torsos and arms from the Warlocks, to keep more of their original feel. After some cutting here and there and some gluing, here is my first model. I still need to add some greenstuff to have a better seam between the hood and the cloak, but I already like it.

I'm also thinking about switching the sword for a staff, to give them a bit more of a wizardly theme, but I'm not sure if it wouldn't be going too far. If you have any comments about that idea, share away.

Thanks thenoobbomb.

The whole unit has been glued last night. I still have to finish the collars with green stuff, but I already like the look of the unit a lot. For the champion, I want with a masked face and a pointed forward sword, but it might be too subtle a difference.

Wow, summer went so fast! I haven't been able to hobby a lot, as I've moved and also did a bunch of overtime. Now that I'm back in hobby mode, here is some more progress.

The Warlocks conversion is still on hold, but will hit the painting table soon, as I have a Fantasy team event coming in November. I'll try to have them done by then, and maybe a new Cauldron of Blood, to replace the tiny old one I already have.

I've work on a smaller terrain project during the summer, but its a gift for a friend, and he does navigate Dakka once in a while, so that's the main reason I haven't posted anything lately, as it was my main project.

In the past month however, since coming back from GenCon, I've assembled and painted Helga the Conqueror, one of the farrow warlock for Hordes. As she's a leader, I've pushed the painting for her more than I usually do for that game. Here is it:

Speaking of GenCon, my Rivet Wars diorama got me a Bronze mention in the Master Painting Competition for its category. Really happy about that.

I finally was able to start painting the Warlocks I converted earlier this year. There isn't a lot done, but at least painting has started!

I also painted two more Orcnar models last week, to go with the starter I already showed. An Ealdmoder, which is an old crone, one of the leader of the faction, as well as an Eotan Abifian, one of their big brute, able to send shockwave by banging is boulder fist on the ground.

It as been a long time since I last posted, but the holidays, then a new baby, can have that impact on the hobby.

Since then, I've been back in the hobby saddle and got myself two commission projects for some friends. The first one is Lylyth, Reckoning of Everblight. She's a huge base (120mm) warlock for Hordes, riding on a sleigh drawn by corrupted reindeers. Pretty cool model. I have the base done now, and the sleigh. The two deers are about 80% done, and the woman herself is only at about 30% done.

I wrote a tutorial about the base, if anyone is interested in trying their hands at making a frozen lake base, that you can find on my blog:
http://www.zonion.net/en/2015/05/how-to-frozen-lake-base/

I've also been working on a set of collapsible cardboard terrain a friend is gonna put on Kickstarter pretty soon. I'm doing the painting for him so he has something else than cardboard brown buildings to show, but all the hard design work his is. I can't take credit for any of that. If you find that interesting, like his FB page, MC Studio, to stay updated.

The base and sleigh look fantastic! I checked out the tutorial and there are some even better views of the base on there

The card terrain you have made look incredible, too. The fact that this thread doesn't have more replies is a mark of shame, Dakka (although it's probably also because you only update when you've got something good to show, which sometimes makes for a long time between updates, but each one is worth it!).

You have a real knack for making awesome looking terrain, any more projects in the works?

Tonio's workshop - Current projects: Skitariis and AdMech @ 2015/05/29 12:52:37

Post by: Tonio

The number of replies probably go with the randomness of what I post and the low frequency of posts on my part, for sure. I haven't posted everything I've worked on in the past months, but I'll try to post a bit more often.

Can't take credit for the terrain other than the painting side. Marc did a great job on their design.

Since I sold my last Endless board to On the lamb games, I would need a new one to be able to play again. I do have a couple of boards at the sketch level, so one of those might get worked in a near future. We're also getting in a Gorkamorka campaign locally, and I don't have any orky terrain, so that might happen soon too. Other than that, I'm getting into Pulp City and Batman the minis game, so I might work on a urban board filled to the brim with terrain.

This week, I did a small conversion project for the birthday of a friend. He's a Circle Orboros player for Hordes, and his list is based around a wolf theme. He however finds that it lacks a bit of punch, and I suggested adding a gorax. Sadly, it doesn't fit the theme, and he doesn't really like the model either. That's where my "Warpwolf Rager" enters. A gorax conversion to fit his theme. I didn't post wip pics as he's a member of the forum and I didn't want to ruin the fun before I gave it to him last night.

Base model is the plastic Gorax. The upper half of the head is from the Feral Warpwolf. The rest is simple Green Stuff and Apoxie putty.

Let me know what you think of it.

I just realized that I forgot to share a big project I finished earlier in the year. It was a secret gift for a friend, so I didn't share any wip pics, but the giftee has the piece now, so I can share everything.

It's a display board themed for a Nomad force in Infinity. They live on 3 giant spaceships, so the board represent a small section of one of the ship's interior. The models are those of the friend in question.

You can see more final pics of it here, and I did a blog post about the construction here.

Oh man, love that second Gorax! Since you say these are for your farrow, you must be going to try running Arkadius' "Nature of the Beast" tier list, right?

I'm going to try out "The Ark", so named because the animals go 2by2

There's a great thread on it currently in the Minions section on the PP forums explaining a lot of the possible shenanigans with this list:
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?236234-Explain-it-to-me-like-I-was-a-child-of-four

I'm used to playing beast heavy trolls with some insane threat ranges on the Earthborn dire troll, so I think I will enjoy this . Planning to run it as an alternate to whatever normal Gators list I settle on, which Ramos Asura is hard at work on for me!

I really enjoy doing the converting myself (not so much the painting) and am planning to convert this model, Broga from Mierce Miniatures, for my War and Road Hogs, likely magnetizing at the wrists so I can try running the 4 Road Hog variant (which drops the Bone Grinders):

Spoiler:

I'm really impressed with what you've been able to do with the official models! I'd love to see the list you're planning to run, and what models you have left to go for it (and also any other finished conversions if you have a link to pics anywhere).

Yes, it's for the new Arkadius Theme Force, I've tried it a couple of time in a recent Journeyman at 25 and 35pts, and while I need to practice it a lot more, it is a lot of fun to run. Like you, I like to run beast heavy with my Trollbloods, so it's a good fit. I don't have enough stuff to run it pure Ark, and I'm not a fan of spamming any way, so I'll probably run a bit less efficient list with Slaughterhousers. I have a team tournament event coming up in October, so I do need to settle on a list and get painting and practicing. I'm running Thornfall only, so I also need to find a second list. I might go with Lord Carver just because it's the Warlock I've used most often. That might turn out better in a timed environment.

Funnily enough, I've read that thread over lunch today. A lot of nice information in there.

That Mierce pig really looks good. A good base for the work of the good doctor. It reminds me a bit of the "afrikan" hogs that were in Brushfire. Do you know how it scales up compared to the PP stuff?

On the conversion side, I think I've shared everything I have done up to now for my pigs. The rest are pretty much stock, except some simple weapon swaps. I do have a second Road Hog to convert though, so I might get to it pretty soon.

Very cool . I'd love to hear how you fare with it!

I'm not a fan of spam either, and I'm tempted to include the Slaughterhousers because they look awesome, but I like the idea of an almost all-beast list... just seems crazy

I'll let you know how the Mierce pigs scales when it comes in - I think that's a 60mm base so it should fit perfectly. I'm not planning any such "frankenpig" conversions as you have here, but like I said absolutely love your second Gorax . You have an excellent theme going!

I hear you. I would play the new Calandra Theme Force if it wasn't for the fact that almost all competitive TB players are getting into it, and all the extra beasts I wouln't be able to play with any other Warlocks.

I finally was able to get some painting done. Sure, it's just some airbrush base coats, but it still is different than the green stuff I've been doing for the past month. Both franken-gorax, my second War Hog, a couple Razor Boars, a unit of Slaughterhousers, a min unit of Bonegrinders and off camera, the good doctor Arkadius himself. Lots of painting to get done for October.

I'm almost done with the first gorax paintjob. I kinda like the vial liquid effect, but I'm not fond of the colour. It doesn't seems to fit in the overall scheme. Might just be too bright compared to all the muted browns. I might try to tone it down, or maybe switch to a muted orange or pink.

I can't take much credit for the mat, it's a 2'x2' piece I cut from a larger Zuzzy mat. The rest is simply painting and some masking with tape and cardboard to do the lines and goal placement.

Biker looks great . But have you seen the new Farrow beasts in the Hordes Devastation book? There's a big thread over on the PP Minions forum about whether to include them in Nature of the Beast tier lists:

Personally, I'm planning to include a few just for variety

We were running an event this weekend, and with all the prep work and last minute painting, I couldn't do a proper photoshoot of the bikes. A friend still took a couple of good pics, so I have at least a shot of the finished models before giving them back to the client.

Yeah, I've seen them. I was really looking forward the Splatter Boar based on the first teaser that didn't exclude friendly beast in the frenzy check. Ok, we don't have Fury management, but we could have had Frenzy Management. Still looking forward to both of the new lights. Lots of great options.

I've run Nature of the Beast 3 times Saturday during our team event, and Carver once. Finished 3-1 (lost with Carver). It is a lot of fun to play, but again people not prepared for it, it's not even funny how fast it can get in their grill. And how chirurgical you can be with support removaal with the Razor Boars on the feat. I'll probably stick to playing the Theme Force only for tournaments (so mostly never), or if my opponents ask for it. My usual group my be too casual minded for that kind of list.

I got into Guild Ball recently, but was stuck using their paper models as I didn't have time to work on my models. That's over now, and I've just started working on my Butchers' Captain, Ox. Mostly colour blocking for now, and some shading work on the pants and apron.

A bit more work done on Ox. Might be able to finish him tonight, as there shouldn't be other stuff in the way at home. Yay for the holiday break starting in a couple hours!

I also put a first base coat on my fullsize mat (3x3). No pic, as it's just a 3x3 brown square right now...

The base mat is the woodland one from Zuzzy. The company is a pain to deal with, but the product is good. The lines design on it is a pale copy of the official mat done by Steamforged games.

Back home after some time away with the family for the holidays. I got some more painting time on Ox. Pretty much done except the base and some weathering and blood.

He's awesome! Only question is are you sure you want that much grey at his temples - he's looking a bit grandpa-ish (fitting for the season, but still!). Lovely work .

Also linked to your second Gorax conversion as someone on the PP Minions forum was thinking of trying a similar idea (adding a rebreather to a Gorax to help it blend in with the faction).

I'm 35 and I'm as white as him. He's supposed to be a veteran, so I figured it was a good match. I like how it gives him a wise touch through all the violence that the Butchers represent. But it's true I could have gone a bit darker.

And done! I'm really happy with how he turned out. Sadly need to take a pause to work on some commissions before I go back to the rest of the team, but I hope it's gonna be quick as I had a blast painting him.

I'm not sure about the brown rim on the base though. It's neutral and ties in well enough with the basing itself, but I wonder if a deep red would work better for Butchers. Might be harder to fit Union models later if I want them to tie in with more than one team...

Tonio's workshop - Current projects: Skitariis and AdMech @ 2015/12/28 14:18:21

Post by: RiTides

I really like the idea of a deep red on the base rim (like the darker color on his shoulder). That would be sweet, and drive home the scheme a bit more while still allowing you to put less red on the model like you have here. You have a very nice set of colors on this mini, but if I am wishing for more of anything it would be red, and the base rim would provide that

What are the commissions??

Tonio's workshop - Current projects: Skitariis and AdMech @ 2015/12/29 02:53:43

Post by: Tonio

After looking at it more, it's gonna stay brown. I like how they are not just red, that's it's just a touch, on a single accessory and then some blood splatter.

The commissions are the unpainted small ships from Star Wars Armada, a chibi model for a paint swap, and half a dozen more Arkadia Quest models. Luckily, I'm on parental leave for the next month, so I'll have a bit more time to paint, if the naps stays like they were with mom.

Haven't posted in a while. I worked on a commission I can't post about yet for most of that time, but I finally worked on other stuff this week.

Ah, it's just genius to convert Epic Borka - the head of his bear as a stock model was just terrible . I love what you've done with yours, though!!

DzC Reistance is quite cool Will you be painting them to match? It always bothers me how the studio scheme paints the tanks as pristine and the trucks as rusted out... I was planning on doing some DzC and was going to have them all rusted. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle them!

Oups, I wasn't clear, he's not done yet. The client wants more of a black bear head. I can't take too much credit, it's gonna be an almost exact copy of the one in that post on PP's forum:

I don't mind the official scheme that much, as even the military vehicles are patched up, but yeah, they could have had a heavier hand with the weathering. I'm really not sure how I want to go with mine. I won't go extreme, as I prefer the Allied theme to the Feral one, but I'll probably rust them up a bit more. It's the basic colour choice that's bugging me right now, not the fun weathering that goes after.

I was mostly out of the hobby for 3 months, all free time taken by a big project at work. But I'm finally free!

I got back into painting by working on a quick project, a couple stacks of crates and barrels to use as terrain for Guild Ball. They're from Micro Art Studio.

On the table, a gargantuan ice base, alternate Thagrosh for Hordes and finishing the chibi Marie-Claude I started in a workshop with Liz Beckley in January. More pictures to follow soon !

Started working on Boiler and Princess for the Butchers, but I don't have pics to show.

However, I also recently started two sculpting projects, one 3d and one classic.

First one is a 3d resculpt of a small ninja onion (le zonion) I did in greenstuff in the early 2000s. I wanted to do a new version of it, and also to dabble in 3d sculpting, so it was a match. It's still a wip with lots to do on it, but I'm happy with how he is coming along, and also with Sculptirs, the software I'm using. It's intuitive enough that I could use it pretty quickly, and it works kinda like traditional sculpting, but digitally. Nothing like the old CAD/3d modelling stuff I tried back in school.

Second project is a small "snow golem" to go with a friend's Frostgrave warband. I'm sure you can guess the theme...

Not a lot of hobby recently, but I did manage to put some time on Boiler. He's almost done; I wish to have him ready for Sunday tournament, in case I have to act as the ringer.

Also done with the main bopy of Olaf. Stopped working on it as I'm waiting for casting material to come in. Sing RiTides, sing!

Boiler is done, but I haven't taken a photo yet. Olaf is still on break, but I'm doing my first metal casting test with the new mould material this weekend, so it should come soon.

In the meantime, I've started working on a Menoth commission. It's for Severius 2, one of their warcaster. Robes are about done, and the rest is at colour blocking.

I also did the marking on a friend's Guild Ball pitch. Might has well put those template to use.

Tonio's workshop - Current projects: Skitariis and AdMech @ 2016/08/03 15:20:02

Post by: Tonio

Severius 2 is almost done.

I also did some test casts using a new mould material, as what I previously used is past its shelf life by a mile. Details stay sharp overall. I think the 10mm dwarf is too small for gravity casting; I would need a spin caster to be sure the axe filled up before the metal set. The casted zonion body has too much texture, but from past experiences, I would just need to tweak the temperature a bit more. Happy with the new moulding material overall, so I can try it out on the snow golem soon. Worst case, it will work with resin too.

Big week to finish stuff.

First, my not-Olaf snow golem sculpting is done. Ready for moulding and casting.

I'm also done with Severius 2. Just need to varnish and take good pics.

Also helped a local player with his Guild Ball with his Fishermen goal. He made the barrel; I'm now doing the tentacles and adding resin water effect to it.

And finally, I started working on my next Butcher model last night, their mascot Princess. Contrarily to her predecessors from that game, she might be done in less than a month... She's almost done in fact, just have some clean up to do on the fur, than the base.

Tonio's workshop - Current projects: Skitariis and AdMech @ 2016/08/15 05:57:03

Post by: Tonio

Casting successful for the snow golem! It's not perfect and requires some cleaning, but for a basement operation using gravity casting, it's fine. My good to bad ratio of cast isn't great (those arms... ), but I expected that doing a single piece. Still got about 10 good casts this evening. On to painting one now.

Fishermen goal and Severius have been done for a while, but I forgot to take finalized pictures before giving them back to their respective clients...

I also finished Princess, my Butchers mascot, ans since that model is mine, I had all the time I wanted to take the picture. That was probably two weeks too long, but here is it finally.

I'm taking a quick break of the butchers to do... some more Guild Ball! Painting my Fishermen starter quickly. Won't do demos with primed models anymore. I'm doing a quicker job with those than the butchers, but I think they will still come out nicely.

I've been a Pundit for almost a year now. Was in before the painting requirement, and have been bad at getting my stuff finalized. The game is exploding locally. 4 stores are carrying the game now, and probably over 30 "semi actives" players. Our bi-weekly gaming evening host 10+ players usually, which is pretty good I think, and we (2 pundits) host demos at least weekly.

Another terrain for the GB tournament in progress, a tree stump that will be used as a Obstructions that models fit on. I'll probably mould and cast it to have multiple copies. The form is done, I just need to add the bark texture.

The stump is done, and I did my first ever resin casting. Crisp details, light. A lot simpler to do than metal. Some bubbles though, so I can see why degassing is important. Not equipped for that, but I might look into it eventually.

A bunch of stumps, casted and painted. They took paint really well.

I did a bit more work on my Fishermen starter, but they are put on hold now until next week, after the tournament, as they won't be needed, while my Butchers might get used as a back-up force, so my last 4 meat-head are getting a rushed quick coat that I'll finalize later.

And lastly, I got some preview minis from the 10mm fantasy ogres KS ran by Black Gate Miniatures. Painted those over the weekend to help promote the final days of the project. More pics and some scale shots on my blog: http://www.zonion.net/en/2016/10/showcase-black-gate-miniatures-10mm-fantasy-ogres/

Something else I've been working on recently is my first Pulp City gang/crew/posse/whatever. We had a mega battle planned last weekend, but I had to cancel beforehand for family reasons. That's not a reason to leave them half done on my painting table, so here is the first one all painted: Guerilla. Missing some stuff for the bases, so he'll have to sit on that cork for another week sadly.

Small aside from the Butchers (again) to work on some A.R.C. model for Pulp City. Quick-ish paint jobs using zenithal priming and lots of glazes.

Guerilla

Silverager

Ba-Boom

Group shot

Well you've just made them look brilliant! Although I think given recent projects, the thread title might deserve an update

Yeah, I'm often wondering about that... I'm still working on those Butchers though, so it's kinda still relevant. I'm just pushing them more, so need a break between models.

I haven't painted much in the past few month, working a lot on the convention we just hold last weekend.

However, I did paint 4 tiny 15mm models for a new line, Chronicles of the Wayfarer. They're holding a contest on FB. If you have a couple minutes to lose and want to support me or the other participants, an ❤️ on a gallery is a vote. (3 votes max).

Oups, haven't updated in a while. I might go back and add old stuff, but for now, here the latest project I've been working on: a first squad of Skitariis to try out the new 40k edition, and Shadow War at the same time.

More to follow soon, as I'm already half done on my Tech-Priest Dominus.

Some ongoing projects, all wip. First, I'm continuing to work on my own AdMech force. About halfway done with my Tech Priest Dominus.

I'm also painting an historical tank for a local 3d design company. This one is a M113, from the Vietnam War.

And lastly is a conversion for a local player. It's a DE Archon mashup with Captain Harlock. I took the GW model, trimmed it down, and I'm resculpting most of the exterior. Here's the inspiration pic, and were I was last week.
