EBay Oddities (continued) @ 2014/05/01 23:43:10

Post by: yakface

The world of miniature gaming on ebay, like anything else, has a number of bizarre and/or odd entries, from crazy-looking conversions to insane asking prices.

It is fun to have a thread that focuses on such oddities. This is a continuation from a previous dakka thread of the same topic.

However, that previous thread was locked because some of the people posting in it seemed to be forgetting some of the basic tenants of posting on Dakka, primarily that you must always remain polite.

While ebay may have plenty of auctions that feature incredibly crude conversions, blatant forgeries, terrible paint jobs, etc, if you'd like to discuss those things here on Dakka you must do so in a polite fashion, as though the users running and participating in the auctions are reading and responding in this thread (because for all you know, they might be).

So no calling people 'clowns', 'morons', etc, no matter how bizarre the auction may seem. Anyone who ignores this warning will be disciplined exactly as though they were insulting another Dakka user (because they may well be without knowing it).

With that out of the way, I thought I'd grab one of the last auction links from that previous thread, just so this one isn't starting without any content to immediately look at.

That thread was a problem? I dont get it, so lets someone tried to sell something for 1000$ that cost less than 100$, we can not estimate the sellers intelligence? I feel like i'm getting too old for this.

What in the nine hells is that exactly? I mean I know what it's supposed to be and I can i.d. a few of the bits, but what's the base model?

The basic tenant of posting here on Dakka is to remain polite at all times. We can all certainly point out and enjoy when an auction goes for way above what the miniatures normally cost, but just like everywhere else on the site, there is no reason to be insulting about it. It's the basic difference between being polite or rude.

It's very simple. You just remark that it is amazing that someone paid X amount of dollars for something, but you don't call them an idiot or a moron. Both get the same point across, but one is rude while the other is polite.

If you don't care for remaining polite, there is literally everywhere else on the internet that you can go to read and spew vitriol to your heart's content.

95% of that previous thread's commentary was fine, but I just wanted to restart the thread with a basic reminder about the site rules in the original post. So really, no big deal here.

If you'd like to discuss the point further, please feel free to PM me so we don't fill this thread with off-topic conversation.

I think the new rules are justified. People have a tendency to vastly overestimate themselves and their belongings. To them, their stuff is worth more than retail despite any shortcomings in actual quality because they made it.

Its a shame too cause that Galactic heroes AT-AT would easily fetch 70+ loose. a MISB one goes for about 100. Granted I think it is an interesting conversion.

The conversion uses a lot of high-end Forge World parts, some of which you cannot easily source outside of buying an entire model kit. My money is on these FW parts being from a recaster, but that is just personal opinion. Plus the base AT-AT model is rather valuable further upping the component costs.

Buying, rather than selling, from Singapore might ring a few bells, but not the reverse. That said, don't take unnecessary risks with a new account, regardless.

I don't know if it will be a problem or not. Most of my problems have come from European buyers. You can even dig up a thread or two I made on the subject if you want. Still, as long as the buyer pays I wouldn't worry too much.

Seconded. I had an Italian buyer open a non receipt case via Paypal (freezing the money from my account) ,30 minutes after he had paid., in other words before I could even have dispatched the item.

His reason was that his post often went missing but he would drop the case once he received the figures. I refused to send them and had the transaction cancelled.

Yeah, that's just a straight up scam. He was trying to get you to send the items and then he wouldn't have closed the case. Good call.

That being said, eBay has a new international selling policy where you can just send to a US location and then they ship to the international buyer from there. Has anybody had that happen yet? EBay let you start a non paying bidder case after 4 days. I have mine autoset for 8 days but in my listings I tell bidders that if they are having problems paying after winning, let me know as I'm fairly patient. I'm clearing a loft not selling as a business.

It's called the Global Shipping Program (GSP) where you ship it first to an intermediary (Pitney & Bowes) who then ship it to the international location. The buyer pays import duties and such beforehand to the intermediary. It's a bit unclear how P&B handles the importing since none of the packages I received that used GSP so far had any customs declaration attached to it.

The shipping charges/customs duties you pay beforehand are also quite variable... sometimes it's much cheaper than shipping normally, sometimes more expensive. It does come with door-to-door tracking, but it takes ages for the tracking to update.

Well, you're paying both to ship it to the center, and for the international shipping, afaik. There's also the delay of having to ship it to them and then have it forwarded on. That's why I just ship directly to Canada / UK / Aus myself... but it is something I may consider for certain international sales now (before I simply didn't allow bids from places I wasn't comfortable shipping to myself).

Paying an extra $10-15 bucks shipping for peace of mind on a $500+ sale seems potentially worth it. Thanks for the info!

Okay, sorry, I won't drag this any further OT.

Are you being sarcastic

The problem with eBay sellers like this guy, are they are only selling to people like themselves who think they can whack a bit extra on the price and make a profit... somewhere out there is some idiot who thought he was being a clever businessman by buying all the 'SUPER RARE OOP' models and then upping the price tag and reselling, and instead is just sat on a huge pile of mini's he cant shift, but feels obliged to keep the prices that high just to cut his losses. Actually I think we all know which webstore that is, been mentioned here and warseer a few times, haha

Its like everything else, the value has spiralled way beyond what the object is actually used for, and is instead based on what profit people think they can make from it. Its still plastic for pushing round a table, same as a house is a pile of bricks for keeping you dry. Except russian billionaires havent started speculating on the OOP miniatures market...

I dont think this is an oddity, it seems a nice little collection of well put together and painted models... its not a mad price either as theres fifteen figures there.

Spoiler:

This could legitimately be a studio model, at this point aesthetically. I mean, maybe they're not quite, there, but this does seem to be where the studio is going.

Oh, give me a break. There aren't nearly enough skulls!

It's certainly authentic to the setting.

I've sold a few high end magic cards ($200+) that way and didnt have a problem. Its the only way I offer international shipping.

This all sounds great, but being eBay, I have to ask what is the downside? Do they charge the seller a premium for this?

Nope, at least not as I can tell. The seller just pays to send to them, the buyer has to pay extra to get it. The advantage for ebay is that buyers can purchase from sellers that might otherwise not want to deal with the hassle of international shipping, so ebay gets fees on things which might not have sold otherwise. Granted, all the things I've sold have been small (cards/minis), so there might be another charge for other types of items.

The Epic Warmonger IS actually quite rare, it I don't think it was ever produced for 'sale', just some that you could get back in the day when you could call GWUK mail order and talk up the "Mail Order Trolls" and they'd offer you deals (!) and unreleased stuff too.

I had one - but I don't remember what I did with it...

Good old UK Mail Order. They always had suggestions on bits and stuff to go with your order and as said, models that were mail order only.

Yeah, as mentioned, the Warmonger is actually a very rare model. It was mail order only through White Dwarf or something like that. I know they've sold on ebay for a lot of money in the past.

Well the international shipping program is still evolving, and as a buyer in Canada, if I see the auctions uses it, I wont bid. Early on they were charging the buyer the sellers cost to ship to the depot and the cost to ship internationally (think 30 dollars shipping on a 100g bag of bits). On top of this they charge the seller duty on all auctions, but typically a purchase of 20 or under should incur no duty.

Finally I had a claim for a damaged auction. it looks like the metal models were dumped into a large box from the sellers original package, all packing material removed. took about 6 weeks for the claim to be resolved and I think the seller got dinged because he sent me a nasty ebay message.

I was doing an eBay clearout on my bits box a couple of weeks ago and popped on five of Victoria Miniatures cloaks for a start price of £1.

Two bidders had a bit of a panic over them and pushed the price up to £25.00.

Considering it's neither one of the original Limited Editions (With the faux drakescale dust-cover), 1st Editions or even a signed edition I'm rather surprised at the asking price - even more so when I can get it from GW for £15. But hey, as long as the dust cover fits properly...

That actually appears to be one of those old lead Thunderhawks from the late 80's/early90's
Those things are bloody pigs to assemble, painting, transport, play with and had a habit of collapsing at a passing breeze.

Good thing it's painted black. It almost hides the terrible conversion work done, and the fact that parts are missing - like the battlecannon, rockets, and the pilot's port

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Error in the description too. The bottom and sides of the turret are metal and from the old Hellhound, the top is plastic and from the Chimera, the guns are from the 3rd Ed Razorback

This crops up throughout the thread, but many eBay stores will alter the BIN pricing of items that are currently out of stock so that they do not have to end the listing and incur any fees while a restock is in place. No one is expecting the Wraiths to sell for that price. When the seller's restock occurs I'm guessing the price will be adjusted to something more reasonable.

They'll bump the price up when they are out of stock, so no one buys one. Then just lower the price, when they have them back in stock.

Best part of that listing is where he says you have to assemble and paint it yourself. I also like the part that says "NOT for human use".

I am guessing it was translated wrong as the item is from Hong Kong. It is more then likely suppose to be not for Human consumption or something close. But the location of where it is from worries me more.

i wouldn't say its dishonest, if its clearly described and priced at 0,01 of whatever currency, its ok and some of the old tank boxes (2nd edition era) are a useful size.

Having said that anyone asking many monies for empty boxes or being deliberately vague with the description deserves a good slap.

It is not at all dishonest, I never tried to sell them as anything other than empty boxes, people actually requested the empty boxes, thats why I started putting them up.
They were clearly labelled as empty boxes, I even put it in big red writing in the description, twice, but people still purchased without reading.
I now send them direct to the few people that want them, i stopped selling the boxes on ebay, because i did not want to look like I was purposefully ripping people off.
I still do trade, I receive a lot of thanks as well, as thankfully not everyone makes crappy assumptions.

How is it dishonest if it is clearly labeled as such? So people do not bother to read an auction and he is the bad guy??? There are several hobbies where empty boxes alone can demand a heavy price. Don't beleive me check these auctions out::

That is good that you can still sell them without people going nuts about an empty box. Where are my models... rage .rage..rage.. LOL!!

. I had a friend selling a Transformers box and had it labeled as empty in bold as it could be and he got questions about the condition of the toy..................no words..........

Speaking as an old TF collector those empty boxes are big. If you have a mint figure, simply having the box (let alone the styrofoam) can raise the value of the figure tons.

I once paid $300 for 2 figs that were in original boxes with styrofoam and that was 10 years ago. I could probably get ~ $200 each now.

Reading comprehension is a constant problem for ebay. I had someone return some Epic Landraiders to me because they thought the 'Epic' bit in the title was referring to how cool the miniatures were, rather than the game they were intended for, and was expecting the full sized 40k model. You would have thought that the £6 for 3 of them, and the photo, would have been a clue

Another, non-gaming related, classic which was similar was for a Porsche Spyder. The person had put 'James Dean' in the title section. The first line, in red, bold capital letters in large type was "For the last fething time, this isn't the actual car that James Dean was driving when he was killed. It's just the same model of car"

'Pro painted' has become one of those meaningless platitudes that seems to be used more often than not for anything being sold painted on ebay.

Another common one is 'doing some commission work', which is more often than not used on forums to describe painting a couple of marines for a mate who can't be arsed to do it himself..

Yes. The box set goes for mint, especially if still wrapped and complete. I still kick myself for not ensuring that my set stayed together.

I mean Its a great game and all, but feth me, I spent £40 on it brand new out of the shop…. Has it been that long?!

Yes. The box set goes for mint, especially if still wrapped and complete. I still kick myself for not ensuring that my set stayed together.

I would love to play it again... Maybe I'll just have to buy it separately. Although that could work out to be just as expensive...

The issue, I believe, is the cardstock items in the game. People like me who left and came back later lost theirs or let them get damaged, whilst people who cared for them are the sort that don't want to sell, so they're fairly rare, especially a full set. Add in that the printable versions are slightly harder to come by, if you're into that, and it made an already pricey aftermarket product even more in demand. The ships aren't even as cheap online as they used to be.

This is getting close to once again something we're trying to NOT have going on here - the whole "pointing and laughing" thing.

Is it unavoidable?

Should these threads be locked immediately, shot on sight?

My personal view is that a thread like this to show off odd and unique stuff is great. I saw some pretty cool and odd things I found funny yet enjoyable that i would have never gotten to enjoy without this thread. I do think maybe it might be a good idea to make it a rule not to include listings that have 'pro-painted' in them just for the sake of laughing at them.

Yes, that would be a very good idea.

He bought the official model, so he no longer needs his proxy, and is looking for a good home for it.
