Gaming Mats Customer Review @ 2014/07/17 23:11:54

Post by: Lutharr101

Hi guys,
As recently wargaming mats are becoming a popular tool to pimp up our tables I decided to write a short sum up of what is available out there and to put all the valid info in one place. Basically take it as independent review/summary of recent developments in this field.
I will try to be systematic and make three basic points on each manufacturer: 1] Company overview 2] Material 3]Designs 4]Pros and Cons 5] Personal experience 6] photos
I will talk about these 4 main manufacturers:
FAT mats, Gamemat.eu, Zuzzy mats and Deep-Cut mats

At the beginning I will divide them into two groups base on core material: A]Rubber based (Gamemat.eu and FAT) and B]Others

A] Rubber based mats (F.A.T. and Gamemat.eu)
These mats have neoprene/rubber backing, which gives them durability, anti-slip effect and they always roll to flat. No dog ears! They feel the most as proper gaming mat out of our portfolio. They are roughly 2-3mm thick. Fairly heavy 3.5-4kg.
Top of mat comes in beautiful print, so they are ready to play immediately after unpacking. After game you can just roll them. Even after months of staying rolled you will be surprised when using them that they come again flat on table.
The printed surface is great as well. It feels very smooth for touch. Models move very nicely on it. Also when you roll dices they actually roll, not slide and there is no awful loud sound of dices hitting the table. They also are not glossy, so even in direct sunlight you keep the mat keeps good looking.

Gamemat.eu, (www.gamemat.eu)
European (Czech Republic) based company producing 4x4’ and 6x4’ rubber mats. They offer total number of 6 designs, which is less but in general their designs come with more originality and detail I would say (small stones, broken floors, leaves etc. are all seen pretty clear in close look). They are still growing and promising to be adding more designs soon. Ideal for EU and UK customers regarding shipment costs. Although bundle shipment to US (2 or 3 mats) comes in decent pricing as well, so it could be option for US based players as well.
Price: 65 EUR / 44 EUR for 6x4’/4x4’, now runnig -10% discount on 4x4’ pre-orders
Pros: Material, Designs (if you like more detailed and original), anti slip, waterproof
Cons: higher price and shipment

F.A.T. Gaming mats, http://www.frontlinegaming.org/
US based company producing really impressive range of 4x4’ and 6x4’ rubber mats. 10+designs. Designs IMHO are made in more general way focusing on consistent look, with less details in mind. Ideal for US based clients as shipment gets a bit heavy to Europe. Although they are trying to work out some solutions.
Price: 85$ / 65$ for 6x4’/4x4’
Pros: Material, Designs (if you like more general terrain), anti-slip, waterproof
Cons: higher price and shipment

B] Other materials (Deepcut, Zuzzy)

Deep Cut (http://www.deepcutstudio.com/)
These mats are printed on PVC. It is kind of material photographers use for their backgrounds on photo sessions. Although looking cool on pictures in reality these feel much more just like printed poster. There is not the actual feel of proper mat as compared to rubber mats above. They are very thin. However they come in good range of designs and sizes (6x4’, 4x4’, 3x3’ etc} which look really good and cover most game systems. Also worth adding print is rather glossy and reflects light a bit too much. Also the bottom is same material so it’s a bit slippery.
Price: 39.9 GBP / 31.9 GBP/ 22.9 GBP for 6x4’/4x4’/3x3’
Pros: lower price, cheaper shipment (much lighter weight as its thin)
Cons: material, dog ears, glossy reflections, not anti slip. Appaling customer service.

Zuzzy (http://www.zuzzy.com/)
These mats are for those who would like to spend some more time and enjoy working and painting on their mats. They come unassembled and unpainted. Although they are only one which have some structure on them which adds to plastic feel. Final look pretty much depends on how skilled (or not) you are . Also shipment is between 6-10 weeks, so pretty long waiting time.
Price: 52$ / 38$ for 6x4’/4x4’
Pros: variability, structured, must be assembled and painted(those who like to enjoy hobby more)
Cons: must be assembled and painted (for those who would like just to roll out of box and play), shipment time

How about these:
http://terrainmat.com/ &
http://www.hotzmats.com/felt_purchase_mat.html

I think the first one has some very nice mats & you can get themed scenery including roads & rivers too but they are quite pricey:
6' x 4' mat only = around £70 (prices vary depending on theme).
They do have a great range of sizes - 3x5, 4x4, 4x6, 5x7, 6x8, 6x10 & 6x12 plus more for others depending on theme) & the themes can be customised for scale (6-10mm, 15-20mm & 25-30mm).
Some themes have quite a few options especially the coastal one.
Have not seen them myself but these are the ones I'm really seriousl thinking about.

You use unassembled with zuzzy mats. What do you mean? I thought they were just one big mat.

You can order them without the hexes.

bit tricky timewise I guess "Important notice : Due to very high demand orders are now 7 weeks behind

This means that the production of your order will take at least 7 weeks ,from the date of placing the orde"
also zuzzy is taking some 8-10weeks usually I heard

I'm trying to find a "space station" mat for x-wing. I've heard so-so reviews of the Gale Force 9 mat. But I also not aware of any other makers. Anybody know of any others worth a look?

Great thread Lutharr, may I also suggest that people add reviews for vinyl/neoprene printing services whereby people can design their own mats at, often, cheaper prices.

Personally I went with http://www.bagsoflove.co.uk/neoprene.aspx for a 3 foot by 3 foot neoprene mat for Malifaux. Great product, delivered in 2 days. The sad thing is they do not go much larger than 3 by 3 so larger wargames are not suitable on them, yet.

You know I actually like that, alot. But at $52 USD before shipping, ouch.
It is 4x4 though.

Well, 3x3 gets a bit cramped above 150 pts. I agree on the price but it will be very functional and will stop models from sliding around at the slightest bump. I have the Deadzone mat which is also mostly gray panels but it has some 28mm scale detailing that doesn't really work visually for Xwing.

Mini-necro: For the Gamemat:EU mat, is the non slip for the back or is the topside a little textured to keep figures from moving around. I'm looking for something for D&D attack wing and keeping figures in place is a concern. I've seen Gripmats, but I just don't like the artwork.

Thanks.

Top is fabric alike

Hotz mats are fine - I have ordered two or three mats from them. I think you might be getting confused with Zuzzy - there are numerous reports of extremely long wait times with them and little or no comms.

This is sadly true. I've got an order in but if I see it before Christmas, I'll be surprised. I'm not worried either. I've backed enough miniatures/terrain kickstarters that I've become numb to long wait times.

Anyone tried the Frontline maps? I've been thinking about getting their 3x3 western waste map. Looks pretty perfect for Blackwater Gulch

If I keep it rolled up all year long and only unravel it for con demos, will it be a real pain to get it to lay flat?

it will be fine. The mats are designed to spend most of their life rolled up. Unless you bend it extremely for a long time will you have to sort out a kink.

Bought a Zuzzy mat last year, it never arrived, zero response to the emails I sent, and due to waiting (as per the website) by the time I wanted my money back, it was too late to file a claim with Paypal. DO NOT buy from them.

The FAT mats are really nice and I'll be buying one in the near future.

There were several reports on this site recently that zuzzy was simply not issuing product at all and just taking folks money whilst the owner 'pursued his dream' of novel writing.

Cool, I'll get one of the frontline matts then

I started with a 2x4 zuzzy matt that I cut in half and made 2 2x2's and glued em down onto plywood.. but they're too generic looking, I think the 3x3 with the roads and stuff will work much better for me.

The zuzzy mat is nice but you have to paint it which is extra work. I got my zuzzy mat years ago and only took me a month or two to get. I put in a order with zuzzy late last year and never heard from them again. So I would avoid zuzzy.

Just a heads up for the UK Dakkites,

I've just managed to bag a Micro Art Studio 3x3 X Wing/Space mate from Trolltrader on eBay for £27 delivered. They're the rubber backed/mousemat style material and having received it yesterday I can say the quality is excellent.

I've not seen a rubber backed mat for this sort of price delivered anywhere else, and there doesn't seem to be very many left (choice of two designs I think) but it may suit some people.

It's too bad these guys don't have bigger mats than 4x4. I would definitely get one if they had 6x4 or 8x6. I suppose you could put icestorm and warehouse together for a 8x8. Really sharp looking urban mats.

So, this may not exactly count as a gaming mat, at least not on level we have discussed so far. But this is something I had my eyes on for a while now and which I got myself today.

Green ReadyGrass® Vinyl Mat. It is really thin, re-rollable mat, with thin layer of flock spread across it. Intended for use mainly on display boards and for creation of big uniform surfaces (hills alike). But the good thing is that it can be a cheap replacement for gaming field. And it is pretty big. (2ft. by 2-1/2ft.)

@StarDrop - I have a couple of vinyl mats like that of different colors, in the 80"x50" size (I think they cost me about $25 USD). They're super useful. Great for straight gaming.

I think it's fake flock, by the way. It looks and sorta feels like flock, but it won't come off (which is a great thing).

I checked the size. Mine is 25" x 33". Which is bigger than the size they have available on the manufacturer website. Also, this fake flock can be peeled off, in order to make spots for roads, ponds, water flows etc.etc., as per manufacturer instructions.

I can see some terrain being build out of this once I get home.

I have a mat from Gamemat.eu and it is outstanding.

Oddly enough, with shipping, it's significantly cheaper than the FAT mats as well. I prefer Gamemat's graphics as well. They lay flat and fold or roll easily for storage.

One on relatively minor note -- the ordering site, there is no field for State or Province, which is useful for shipping things to US/Canada.

Just my thoughts on GameMat:EU

I now own over 200 Game Mats as we use them for SmogCon, the Warmachine and Hordes convention I run each year in the UK.

The product is fantastic. I have several designs now, green plains, desert and snow. All work great for WM/H.

There was a slight issue with the first batch I ordered in that originally they were coming up at 47.5" x 48.5" For many that's not a huge issue, but some WM players found it frustrating having to measure (and I was a little annoyed as the reason for investing in the mats was specifically as a counter to misshaped gaming spaces on the WM comp scene).

However, Matous and I have kept in regular contact and he has been able to secure correctly sized mats now, hence me going back to use him again and fitting out the event with so many mats.

Yes, they are fairly expensive, but I find them superior to the PVC mats in terms of weight and durability (plus they tend not to crease, instead rolling out flat nicely). They do get heavy in bulk mind you Most day to day users likely won't have this issue as I'm not sure how many will see the numbers I do.

So, a vote of confidence for both the produce and the company from me

Sorry if it's threadromancy now... Anyone know of any companies that might have a cobblestone road mat? and in 3x3? I'm trying to build a fantasy town kind of board, wanted to have something nicer than a plain ole dirt/grass board.

I did find this one on Etsy.com, but I was hoping for something with dirt & roads, I guess kinda like the 40k city boards, only more old tiimey / fantasy looking

Their cobblestone mat looks great, but it's sold out in 3x3 :( but with that I think I would need to make bases for my buildings, which might not be a bad idea but I'm lazy. I was hoping for something that's more like dirt and grass with cobblestone roads printed on them.

I do like this one from Frontline for Blackwater Gulch games, but it's sold out :( It could probably work for fantasy too

My battlemat from gamemat arrived pre xmas.
Im fairly impressed.
Pros: good quality material, great floor side in terms of "stickiness", nice detail, rolls up well, cleans easily. I even accidently spilled a pint of water over it, mopped up as much as I could and dreaded the creasing to come. No such issues, once it dried out, it was perfect
Cons: some minor fraying on two of the sides near the edges, nothing huge but if you pay for a product you expect 100% perfection.
The size is not quite 6x4 perfect. Long edge measures 70.5 inches.

However, overall, I'd recommend one.

I am definitely considering either a mat from G-Mat or a F.A.T. Mat. I think a pair of Lifetime folding tables and a good mat will be good way to get a gaming table that won't break the bank. Overall, it looks like a G-Mat (probably the 6'x4' G-Mat: Battleground mat) and two of those tables will set me back less than two hundred dollars. Plus, the tables could be used for other things, so my wife might actually get on board with this!

I can't compare DCS to other brands (as I don't have them) but I would thoroughly recommend DCS mouse pad mats.

I picked up the Desert one for my TK themed table I was making for Warmaster and has been doing cracking service for about 4 months now.

It feels as you would expect it, the surface is well printed and nonslip; so no mini's surfing across the place with each and every nudge on the table. It has thus far proven resistant to beer and coke stains.

Wayland and Dark Sphere both started selling these about two weeks after I got it so is available at discount prices too.

I ordered on Monday (five days ago) and the status of my order hasn't changed from "processing" status.

Not worried about waiting the time for the actual shipping, More wondering why it still says "processing" and not shipped and not liking the lack of communication. I'm really hoping that they haven't sat on this order for going on six days without shipping. basically a simple reply saying "orders take x days to ship, or it has shipped but status wasn't updated", Etc.

Keeping customers informed and answering questions is good customer service, especially when you have their money.

If this is true it would of been nice if they had made this clear on their website/Facebook page.

I know that personally if I don't hear some official word from them about the status of my order I'm going to file a paypal dispute prior to the deadline just to protect myself. Again, clear and timely communication goes a long way, especially when dealing with expensive items...

Warmachine terrain rules are abstracted, so it's only relevant that the terrain be representative, not that it actually physically block LOS or whatever.

Look at the number of tables involved and it's no wonder that the cover on each looks a little sparse, but I expect they'll all play just fine.

I think the issue here is an organizer trying to grab as many entry fees as they can and then not devoting enough time/resources back into having interesting tables because they've over extended themselves.

Boring tables at tournaments is common to many game systems and events, for a variety of reasons, and isn't warmachine specific. I've played warmachine on tables that rival mordheim and various other skirmish games in tactical challenge and visual interest. It can be done if people want to. You get what you put in...

It's a nice idea but it's just a folding table. You can get them practically anywhere.

Gaming Mats Customer Review @ 2016/03/28 15:27:45

Post by: tomjoad

Ah...I had thought that the mat was integral to the table; I see now that it's a separate piece. A folding table that size is still mighty hard to find (the biggest I usually see are 3' x 3'), but at that price, for JUST the table, it's probably better to just build one. Oh well.

Gaming Mats Customer Review @ 2016/03/29 04:54:45

Post by: -Loki-

You can find folding trestle tables almost everywhere. I've got 2 that are 6'x2.5', so I get a 6'x5' table when they're combined.

On topic, I bought a mat from playmats.eu, which arrived today. They print on vinyl, not the mousepad style you get from F.A.T mats, Microarts, etc. However, they can print double sided for only slightly more, which I took advantage of. As the mat is for Malifaux, I also got them to print the Malifaux 2E deployment and objective markings, which blend in nicely.

As I wanted two different types of terrain for variation, I got them to do one side Victorian cobblestone, and one side swampy using their Dark Island mat. Details are super crisp. While I really wanted mousepad type material, I actually found I like the vinyl material. Flattens out fast.

This is the swamp (Dark Island) side.

This is the Victorian Cobblestone side.

^^ Those Malifaux designs are nice but ive been hesitant to order from that company due to the material they use... does the vinyl reflect light? Because that would really bother me...

This is only my opinion but I think they are absolutely terrible.

I read comments of them being hard wearing and durable, easy to fold etc. Absolute bollocks. The problem was my mat-o-war came folded, and it was absolutely impossible to remove the creases from it. I tried ironing, heavy books, stretching with weights, even took it to a professional laundry with industrial steamer. The folds would not remove. Actually, I considered contacting the company to say they should patent this amazing, hi-tech design of material that will retain its crease no matter what action you take to remove it

In the end I had a bonfire and burnt the thing, felt much better about it afterwards

I've seen it. I dislike the way it has a huge cobblestone area in the center, since it's illogical to place a building there. It's a street intersection, and open grassy areas for buildings around the edges. This forces the substantial terrain onto the edges - quite nicely shown by that photo. Half of the large terrain is doing a whole lot of nothing right up against the edges. Guild players would love that table.

Having the center be some place for a building to go opens up more options with table layout. You don't have to have a building in the center if you've got a strategy or scheme that uses the center circle, but you can if you don't.

Ordered a mousepad mat from PWORK games at http://www.pworkwargames.com/en/. The mat in question was the War Sands mat, and it arrived on Friday with an order placed in mid August, so a rather quick turnaround to ship to the US.

How I pictured it'd look from their online store:

And how it is under natural light:

Now, based on the online pics, I was under the impression the mat would look different than the way it arrived. I was disappointed to see no yellow, orange, or rust tones in the final product, and instead was met with an overall beige/brown/pink tone, as evident in the pics.

The details are excellent, and it photographs well, but the online pics were a bit misleading - the pictures may have had some extra saturation added, or maybe the mousepad material doesn't hold this particular design's colors as well as the PVC/Cloth options.

This was what I thought it'd end up like (I've added some filters in Photoshop):

Bit disappointed, especially for the price I paid. How has everyone else faired with their mats based on ordering sight-unseen?

On a side note, anyone found a good non-orange desert mat without a lot of extra bits and pieces added to over-texturize the details?

I've seen this same issue with another manufacturer who sells mats in cloth/pvc/neoprene versions. I get the impression that the colors can sometimes print quite differently on the neoprene than on the other two materials. :(

Any plans to make Blood Bowl game mats? It would be really sweet to get some different themes rather than use whatever comes in the box set or try and make a really dull version using a grass mat and some white paint.

Mousepad material lays flat really easy if that's what you're talking about. But it's so heavy! I just got a felt mat from Ceri Designs, bu need to figure out how to store it too (rolled up around a cardboard tube, folded, etc?).

I have two 6'x4' mats from Deep Cut Studios. At the time I ordered/received them they were a heck of a deal (something around $90 or so shipped to the U.S.).

My clear favourite is the Steppe pattern. Simple, works on various scales and is quasi-arid/quasi-grass.

I don't think I have a large shot of the Badlands one I ordered. I don't use it much because it's not as versatile, and it has details which are slightly too large for 28mm stuff.

I'm thinking about the 4x4 Urbanmatz Swamp mat for christmas. Is it suitably murky looking for Nurgle worshipers to stomp around on?

Alternatively a nice Mars/Ad Mech mat would be ace, recs? My FLGS only has a wine red desert Nice graphic, but not the colour I want.

I got my mat order from Urbanmatz a few days ago. Now I just need to clean up the War Room after a few months of neglect (work is a cruel mistress) and I'll lay them out and do some reviews.

I have to say, both companies' desert mat designs above look pretty sweet. I really like the cracked earth effect on the gamemat one.

So this seems like a good place to ask. Do any companies make a good SEA mat, I'm looking for a mousemat type one.

I know frontline gaming do a nice looking F.A.T. mat, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. The only other ones I've seen are PVC and I have a PVC space themed mat and it hasn't lasted well (covered in scratch's).

I think they're doing some kind of retooling, and discontinued a good chunk of their mats for new styles. I'm hoping it includes some DFC style ones.

I finally got my wargaming room (mostly) cleaned up enough to actually use the table again last night, so I was actually able to check out the first of my mats from Urbanmatz - their Space mat. I took a pile of photos, and wrote up a side-by-side review of both the Urbanmatz Space mat and the FFG X-Wing Starfield mat. The TLR is that both are great, but I give the edge to the Urbanmatz.

That mat (along with a few others) is on my possible-purchase list. How do you find it in practice? As it seems that nearly 1/3 of the mat is essentially a very good looking "out of bounds" and not particularly usable due to the amount of sea.

Obviously, it is a very mat for a very specific type of game (beach assault). I have enough Bolt Action stuff for D-Day, as shown, as well as forces for the Pacific to get a lot of mileage out of it. The ocean/water part is only about 12" of the width (1/4 of the width). I consider 2-3" of the water being difficult terrain as to not lose much width. Plus, if the water didn't make up as much of the width as it does, I would start to struggle to fit landing craft on it.

Some of the rules I add to this mat is random landfall rules which makes use of the extra water area as that is where the landing craft is placed followed by essentially a scatter die roll. I typically make the beach area half movement but double protection for going to ground (or Down order).

All in all, I really like the mat as it is much easier and portable than building a beach table. The graphics are really good. They are crisper than my other mats (Deadzone and an older Frontline Gaming snow mat). This mat doesn't get used as much (outside a short Pacific USMC vs. IJA campaign), but I am glad I have it.

I played my first game on my F.A.T. Mat from Front Line Gaming this weekend. I bought it at GenCon last year. I don't think they make them anymore. They make the F.L.G. line of mats, now.

Pro: The detail is great, and my ruins terrain pieces fit well with it. Afterwards, it rolled up easily and fit back into the black case it came with on the first attempt. I was worried that would be a pain, but it wasn't.

Con: I need a lot more ruins. Most of my terrain is hills, but I didn't want to use it on this mat. It wouldn't match. (Obviously, this is my issue, not the product's!)

My wife told me I need to go get that 4 building set from GW (Imperial Sector?) so the table isn't so sparse. Nice!

That cobblestone map looks a bit weird. Who would build roads like that? widths and curves are mathematically perfect but the way they link together and go through each other at weird angles makes no sense. It needs a lot more irregularity (in road widths, potholes, less-than-perfect curves, etc) plus a more logical road layout to look realistic in my opinion. I like the lava map though, very cool.

Ordered two new mats from Urbanmatz in the Czech Republic - will post up opinions when they arrive.

One 6x4 Cobblestone for a friend, one 6x4 Dirty Roads for me.

I will say it was rather unfortunate for my buddy and I that the US options are so slim. The mats in the US either have poor art, or prices are more than equal mats from Europe. A bit frustrating, but I received my previous Deep Cut mats with no issues.

Just waiting on a reply from Deep Cut about VAT before I pull the trigger on a 5-mat order. Their system doesn't seem to remove the VAT from their prices (and shipping as well, I think) unlike Urbanmatz and Gamemat, and I'm not keen on "paying" tax that doesn't apply...

After Deep Cut the plan is to order a few from Gamemat, and then between the three manufacturers and my terrain collection I should be set for (almost) anything within reason...

Wayland Games finally got a restock on the Deep Cut Studio Blood Bowl mats so i splurged for ONE mat and the shipping was more than the mat. I am really confused by this as i own 4 8x4 mats from both Kraken Wargames and Gamemat.eu and i don't think the shipping for my 4 full table mats even totaled the amount for this one tiny Blood Bowl mat. This will most likely end up being the only Deep Cut Studio mat i buy because paying more in shipping than the cost of the item is just stupid.

Gaming Mats Customer Review @ 2017/04/28 13:05:45

Post by: Elbows

Well, you ordered it from Wayland Games, so wouldn't it be their shipping and not Deep Cuts?

Gaming Mats Customer Review @ 2017/04/29 01:17:51

Post by: Azazelx

Yeah. If you bought it from Wayland instead of direct from Deep Cut, that's hardly DC's fault.

I just checked their site to find the costs direct for a single Blood Bowl Mat shipped to the US:

Cart Totals
Subtotal 28.90€
Shipping Worldwide shipping: 14.90€
Calculate Shipping
Total 43.80€

If you paid more than 15 euro (roughly £13), then you got screwed by Wayland. Cancel the order if it hasn't shipped yet and order direct.

I suppose there will be soon...

I received my Urbanmatz from the Czech Republic. Overall, pretty nice.

A little thinner than the Deep Cut mats I've owned, and the cutting isn't quite as precise (more fraying at the edges, but not terrible). The Cobblestone mat was...disappointing. My buddy ordered it and hadn't realized how dark blue it is. It shows up in some of their pictures, and doesn't in others. He had looked at the pictures showing a more "grey" appearance. Upon looking at the listing again, it's definitely a dark blue.

I can't recommend that one to anyone based solely on the colour, so he may or may not sell it off.

The Dirty Roads mat was perfect. Nice crisp art, nice layout, etc. The only minor qualm I'll give both mats is that they have a rather heavy satin sheen to them - unlike the Deep Cut Studios mats I've owned. Not super noticeable, but it's there. I hope it'll decrease with use over time.

All in all, I'm please, but my buddy isn't (to be fair, mostly our fault for not doing more research). I would order from Urbanmatz again.

These pictures don't really show how "blue" the cobblestone is, but you can see the difference between a more normal grey and the cobblestone mat.

EDIT: Took pictures with my phone which more accurately show the colour disparity as seen with normal human eyeballs.

Received my PWorks 3' x 3' mat earlier this week. It looks as good as shown on the site, only downside though, they have their logo printed in one corner of the mat, something they did not advertise as far as I could see, nor show in any of their pictures. Here’s the last of the first batch of my gaming mat reviews of Urbanmatz‘ products from the Czech Republic. The Dirty Roads 6’x4′.

Often when I buy something from a company, there’s a “key” item that acts as an anchor for other stuff you then add-on. In the case of my Urbanmatz order, it was this mat. After seeing several photographs of it online, I was sold. The overall colours and theme of Dirty Roads matches my bases once again, as the Urbanmatz' Badlands mat did.

As with the other mats I’ve gotten from Urbanmatz, the design is printed onto neoprene (mouse pad material) and is once again quite nice. This time, the game I’m using to showcase the mat is an Age of Sigmar clash between Dwarves and Ogres, set in an unnamed Old World city (because I can use the ruleset without the background!) We were trying out the rules, so it’s an actual game rather than a mockup. Lots more pics over on my Wordpress blog.

I had an issue with the bag's zipper dying on me when I had the mat out for this photo review, which was only the third time I had it out(!) I still haven't gotten around to emailing Benjamin about it, but I will do eventually. I’ve now also got a bunch of Deep Cut Studios and Gamemat.eu products that I’ve also purchased that I will be photographing and writing reviews for shortly as well. But those are yet to come.

The double-sided Game mats look really cool, but I was expecting a bit more of a discount cost-wise. The price is a little off-putting. Cool idea though, hope it's adopted by other companies. I agree the lack of rubber is unfortunate, but I think if it was a bit more cost-effective I'd definitely consider it.

I recently bought the badland 6x4 mat and terrain from gamemat.eu. I'm happy with both of them, they looked great as a photo from a recent game shows (The rocky bits and mat are theirs) and our table got a lot of complements on it's looks. I had two very small chips which I can't imagine is a common problem as the terrain was very well packages in the polystyrene cube with piece specific holes cut-out. No problems with the mat. I asked them for a paint list so I could touch up the chips. It turned out the paint would not very easy for me to obtain but they were apologetic and our conversation gives me confidence that if I had a more serious problem they would to fix it without any difficulty.

If anyone is interested I fixed up the chips using a black brush on primer, VMC Flat Brown, a mix of VGC Heavy Orange and AP Skeleton Bone and finished off with GW Karak Stone.

I just received my limited Forges of Mars mat from gamemat.eu along with their pre-painted industrial set.

The mat is really great, the craters really look modeled on and not like an image.

The terrain is good and chunky and nicely detailed. The paintjob is simple but effective, I will just add some details here and there. The packaging is also useful to store it between games.

The map really fits well with GWs terrain. The circles on the side could really have been made with the Sector Mechanicus in mind wouldn't the mat predate GW's terrain. I also found out that standard tin cans have exactly the dame diameter and are only a few milimeters shorter that the Feratonic Incinerator.

The cardboard box is a slightly smaller stand in for a big building with detachable roof and walkways I want to build that can also be used for Necromunda.

I had a conversation with Reecius/Front Line Gaming about this several months back when Shadow War Armageddon released and provided a lot of input on a Necromunda themed mat for the November release of Necromunda. I guess we'll see in a week or two if they developed anything or not. If not, it's their loss because I'm sure a competitor will come out with something sooner than later.

Well, it looks like Frontline is about to lose out on a bunch of sales. Their own fault, really.

Gamemat.eu was my first neoprene mat purchase and I have been very happy with it. The graphics are imo better than the FAT Mat graphics, and even with international shipping the Gamemat.eu was cheaper.

Yep, it's why I steer people away from FAT Mats unfortunately. Their art and price is sub-par, and all of my mats have been from Europe as a result.

Are you guys talking about the Tablewar mats or the FLG? I've got one of each and I'd rank them:

Tablewar - best art
Gamemat.eu - good art
FLG - sub-par art

Yeah, it looks like some of the newer Tablewar ones are slightly better - but some are still looking really sub-par. I think the most consistent art I've seen is probably Deep Cut or Urbanmatz (Urbanmatz is all done by one guy I believe). I find with the price parity (Tablewar mats, for instance are $13-15 more than equivalent Euro mats - with shipping being almost the same) it's best to just buy from whoever you like best - artwise.

There's no inherent savings in buying locally in the US.

My Gamemat.eu mats arrived yesterday, and as a friend of mine had ordered one I brought the giant heavy box over to his place and we rolled 'em out to take a look.

So here's a mini review for anyone thinking of taking the plunge and getting some proper professional gaming mats rather than using tablecloths or bed sheets and other things (like I've been using).

General Review:
These mats are made of excellent mouse-mat material, the single-sided ones don't slip at all, the colours and artwork are vibrant and clear. They're excellent surfaces and are filled with detail. If there are any complaints it's that you really need to roll the double-sided ones tight or they won't fit in the (included for free) carry cases, and when in the carry cases the single-sided ones aren't very robust, so they droop in the middle which looks funny (that might be the single most minor complaint one can make about these things).

4x4 - Chemzone:
This is a stylish newer map that I got to give defined edges in Necromunda. It's simply layout and wonderful design make it perfect for this type of game, and despite its vibrant detail it would not distract from what's going on in the game. Wonderful.

I could'a got the 6x4 one of this, which they also produce, but as I said I wanted a 4x4 so that the edges of the game are clearly defined, not 3 defined edges and one measured out but could move or whatever. The less ambiguity the better, but if you want a 6x4 version of this great map they can do it.

4x4 - TriCity:
Another one bought for Necromunda, this one turned out a lot better than I imagined. I wanted a generic "flat plates" style map, and this one delivers but at a very high quality. You could do so much with various sci-fi set-ups using this map. Kinda makes me wish they did a 6x4 of it.

6x4 - Forges of Mars:
One of their two Limited Edition designs, this map is almost perfect with no terrain on it (so with terrain, even better). This is the one that most impressed me of the bunch. I am looking forward to seeing this with GW's Sector Mechanicus stuff on it. So much detail, everything looks natural, it almost looks 3D. I love this map.

6-4 Double Sided - Quarantine Zone/Wastelands:
This was the one I was unsure about. I wanted a map city grid, but the fact that it's not at an angle (creating clear LOS right across the table) bugged me. I prefer city terrain fields to be at 45 degrees to the regular deployment zones to create more interesting and limited fields of fire. I also wasn't 100% certain how the Wastelands side would turn out. I did a bunch of research on these maps and the city side sure looks cool, and Winter SEO's many exceptional videos showing off the Wastelands side made me think it's genericness would be a boon.

So I was pleasantly surprised with how this one turned out. The city is really well detailed and will look good when filled with my oodles and oodles of Cities of Death terrain. The Wastelands side is so generic (in a good way) that it'll work with anything - ruins, trees, rocks, lakes, you name it. I now have 3 surfaces for city maps, but none that are like Wastelands, so overall it was worth getting the double-sided one for this.

6x4 Double Sided - Fallout Zone/Imperial Base
I wanted a future/sci-fi board that wasn't city streets and looked more like a warzone, so the Fallout Zone map was an obvious choice. The Imperial Base side looked interesting, even if I'm not 100% sure how I'd use it yet, but it did look cool, so I went the double-sided version. Overall the Fallout Zone did not impress me as much as I wanted it to, but I think that it will be the one that benefits most from a good selection of ruined terrain. I have plenty of that, so I think my opinion will change.

Again, still don't know how I'm going to use the Imperial Base side of things, but it was the map that most impressed my friend. It is very cool.

6x4 Double Sided - Highlands of War/Forgotten Realm:
I have a single-sided Highlands of War on the way as I need something for organic/grasslands terrain other than my old green GW Battlemat (which I love, but I need more than one!). It's very good, and will work perfectly with my now good selection of organic terrain (I have recently bought a bunch of Gale Force 9/Battlefield in a Box trees, rivers and rocks, plus I got Gamemat.eu's own Highlands set, which hasn't arrived yet but is on it's way now).

I did not get the double-sided version as I saw no real use for the Forgotten Realm side. Never been a fantasy player, don't have anything that would fit with cobble-stone/stone pavers. My friend however does, as he owns a bunch of resin medieval/fantasy buildings, so for him it's perfect. And I gotta say, in the same way that the Imperial Base impressed him, the Forgotten Realms side really impressed me. The detail is rich, the stone pathways are big and varied, and with the right building aesthetic you could make this really work.

A couple of weeks ago two other friends of ours played a test AoS game at my first friend's house for, I think, the NOVA open which they're going to. They played on two bare white 2.5'x7' trestle tables, with a few buildings and trees. No surface - not even a blank table cloth - and it just hurt my soul. If he'd had had this mat when they played the game just would've looked so much better. One of those two friends wants to run his own tournament, which is part of the reason why I've been picking up these mats - I want to be able to do 10 tables worth of stuff, and whilst I have the terrain for that already, I don't have the surfaces.

With these, plus the other three mats I have on the way, I can now do that.

Great stuff. Gamemat.eu products are fantastic.

Small addendum to my review, and it's a sad one because it isn't really Gamemat.eu's fault. This mostly pertains to anyone who ends up having their stuff shipped to them by UPS.

UPS are an inflexible bunch, unwilling to allow you to pick any kind of delivery time (not even a morning/afternoon/evening operation), no deliveries on weekends and they won't take things to a post-office if you're not there. Sure they'll make 3 delivery attempts, but if you're not there you better get ready to drive to their depot which is on the other side of the fething world to me (or it seems like it is). They will only allow a change of address, and I'm lucky that a friend of mine's father was home at the time to receive it.

So whilst Gamemat.eu products are simply fantastic, the method of receiving them couldn't be more inconvenient.

It's a good design. I think city/urban mats work better when they're set at an angle, rather than streets parallel with the edges of the map.

What do you guys think the best mat is to colour match GW Martian IronEarth / IronCrust? This would be for Titanicus games so any detail on it would need to scale with that.

You will not find a well-made gaming mat for under $65-70 USD. They're costly to ship (being heavy), and ordering from Europe direct you can expect $85-95 shipped.

I just got my 4' x 4' double sided mat from them in the mail..... So far its absolutely amazing. It's quite a bit more detailed then I imagined. But the quality is great, no creases or folds when laid flat which is a huuuge pet peeve of mine.

Also for what its worth the customer service was pretty good as well. I live in the middle east and they made some changes to ship to my country that other companies dont.

Steve, if you're looking for a subdued grass mat, consider the Steppe pattern from DeepCut Studios.

https://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-steppe/

It's not necessarily a grass mat, but like an arid area with brush, gravel and a dusting of dry grass. It's my first mat and I love the thing. It may be a bit "too" flat for ya?

Used for my Old West gaming.

I got a set of the Gothic Ruins and Quarantine Zone to boot from Gamemat.eu. I run a small hobby page just for the fun of it, and made a review.
The people in our group at least at the moment didn't have time to start building a table, and we decided it's better to just get it prepainted so we can focus on miniatures and gaming. Can't complain, was good products.

Anyone have any experience with Stratagem’s maps? Amazon link

I’m thinking of picking up a mat, but have a number of restrictive preferences (which I could ignore, but would rather not)

Available on Amazon. This is restrictive, but I got some gift cards. For something really good, I could pony up some real money, but the gift cards are my guilt-free hobby budget.
Free/reasonable shipping to the USA. The cost to cross the pond puts some of the European mats out of my range.
4x6
Neoprene/mousemat. Not a fan of shiny vinyl, needs to roll up for storage without folds/creases.
Roughly in the $75 range
Arctic/snow and/or grasslands. I’d pay more for a double-sided map, but for the cost of trans-Atlantic shipping, I could almost just buy two mats domestically.

I noticed someone has recently started selling FLG mats via Amazon, but wanted to look into options.

Thanks.

Hey guys, as some of you may have noticed, the page count has gone down a bit on this thread.

That's because we decided to do some cleaning up and remove most of the posts made by gaming mat manufacturers that were nothing but them posting their latest products here. Actual replies to posters about concerns and whatnot are still present though!

Reason for this is simple: the thread is for the reviewing of the products and people asking questions in general about them. It's for you guys to share your experiences with the products you've purchased and for you to ask around about what's out there. Not for manufacturers, who also maintain their own threads in N&R where they post the same things, to announce their latest releases. It kind of defeats the purpose of the thread when it was first conceived.

It may also be time to update the OP one of these days with a more up to date offering of companies out there, as I think Zuzzy is no more?

I recently purchased GF9’s double-sided 6x4 neoprene mat. Their spotlight article on the product offers some great pics:

https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=5447

The quality is extremely high. The last time I bought mats from GF9 was at the outset of X-Wing so maybe late 2012 or early 2013. I love those mats but this one even better in terms of thickness and image.

The images are very vivid and there is a excellent sense of realism and detail — even on the desert side. This mat will certainly enhance your gaming experience if you like the spectacle of wargaming ... and what miniatures gamer doesn’t? The grassland/desert combo cover a huge amount of possible genres and scenarios, making this product exceptionally practical.

Some may blanche at the cost but considering its quality and utility, and that online retailers are selling it below MSRP, I think it’s a wonderful deal. I’d much rather pay this much for a single, well-made product than nearly as much twice over and have to worry about storing two.

Just upgraded my PVC star field mat to a Neoprene one, both from Deep Cut Studio;
https://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-stars/

The depth of the colours is of course no where near as vibrant in the neoprene but the quality is marvelous. My PVC one had real issues with actually laying flat, scratched really easily and tended to allow models to skid, the neoprene one has none of these issues.

Sorry for the rubbish photos but here is a comparison (neoprene on the left);

Here is the neoprene in action;

Pricing was pretty average, shipping was really expensive but customer service and speed of delivery were both fantastic. 8.5/10 would purge with again.

Yeah I think that is quite noticeable in the tiny graphic but it doesn’t look that way when the mat is rolled out.

I will not that I have seen a repeated pattern problem, or at least the appearance of that problem, in some other mats I own. It certainly isn’t ideal but remember the mat is not the star of the show — the action during gaming is the star. And between the mat and the action ought to be a lot of terrain. Ultimately, the mat is there to support the terrain.

But again, I don’t think any repeated or semi repeated pattern is evident on the GF9 mat when viewed in person.

So I pulled the trigger and got a Stratagems’ Winter 4x6 mat.

Rolled flat out of the case, good detail, clean cut edges. Bag feels like mediocre quality nylon. But it has a drawstring and a carry strap. Came free with the mat so can’t complain. We’ll see how well it handles wear and tear. But as it’s just for casual home use, I suspect it will hold up OK. $70 USD on Amazon, free shipping (actually got it in two days without paying extra)

So far happy with it, but no blood has been spilled on it yet. But now my Ultras will have a home field advantage. Being based the same as the battlefield has been proven to help with your movement rolls and armor saves.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good base for a Deathworld table.

I'm a big fan of the Gamemat.eu stuff, as I already have:

Highlands in War (6'x4')
Sands of Time (6'x4')
Tales of Mars (6'x4')
Forges of Mars (6'x4')
Fallout Zone/Imperial Base (6'x4' double-sided)
Quarantine Zone/Wastelands (6'x4' double-sided)
Chem Zone (4'x4')
TriCity (4'x4')

... and they're all fantastic, but as I have a bunch of Deathworld stuff coming in from the two Killzones I ordered, and will be using some of the ruined Manufactorum/left-over Cities of Death stuff to make some Deathworld ruins, I want something underneath that fits that aesthetic. Nothing above right now does.

Any one have any suggestions?

Quick review of a *cloth* mat from PWork Wargames.

I would advise against cloth mats from this company. Their mousepad material mats are fine but their cloth mat was much worse than cloth mats from their competitors. The main problem was, it wasn't really cloth. It was a sort of thin, slightly shiny, gauzy sort of plastic. Other companies that do cloth mats are either doing a felt type of mat (really only Cigarbox Battles that I know of)) or printing on a thicker better quality cloth (TinyWargames, TAOR Mats).

Very disappointed. It feels really cheap and low quality, which would be fine if it was about half the price of their neoprene mats but its only slightly cheaper for a much worse product.
