The camp scheme was actually a mistake, I was trying for something else when I stumbled onto it. Thanks though the errant is probably my best knight yet

Just a small update, I got my Hoard o bits order so I am able to make my sergeants. On a side note I will probably not be using the gw base coat spray again. The time I saved with the base coat I spent on covering it up in the really small details it covered that had to be changed

Yeah I got about 1500ish of krieg to make but I will probably stop there for now. The bases are super easy I didnt want them to look all uniform though so I try and add some barbed wire or other trench warfare type stuff

yeah sadly it wasnt as good as I hoped so chalk that up to my scultping not being the best. I may try using some sort of needles to make the antennae

Needle would work if you can drill it in, or even some thin wire that would have the added bonus of being flexible.

I am thinking of a needle as I got a lot of them sitting about.

I actually used a paper clip for the antenna on my command vox operator. Worked rather well as it is slightly thinner than the GW Cadian ones but sufficiently thick so as not to bend (repeated bending what probably result in a snap).

I am thinking a needle and just cutting it down and drilling it into the vox caster as I would probably break the paper clips too easy. I assume GW primer works well on steel?
52425
Post by: Elnibbus
As far as I know it works OK. Might want to take some fine grit sand paper to key the surface of the needle first and give the paint something to adhere to.

if you give your vehicles camo netting its a 3 plus cover save then, if you wanna gun line that is. Plus 50 points for a twin linked skyfire quad gun and 35 for a skyfire las gun with like 90 inch range, dont hold me to that range but its fairly long distance.

Been kinda slow around here with the holidays rolling around, that and my work space has been fairly cold so I've been setting up some heaters so nothing goes wrong with my paints. Finished two objective markers and a WIP on a thrid
The first one is just a fuel drum
The second is a sword surrounded by a pile of eye glowing skulls. What sort of foul magic does it hold? and is it worth your soul to capture and wield?
The WIP is a death guard space marine torn asunder by a massive blast still clutching a grenade.

74210
Post by: Ustrello
Hey all, this is my first time writing fluff so bear with me if it seems dry. I tried to write it in the sense of a categorization article to give a sense of my knight house and DKoK regiment. As always criticism is welcome.
Iophus prime
Planet type: Knight feudal world
Segmentum Tempestus
Sector: Uthuna
Sub sector: Iophus
Iophus prime sits as the capital planet of the Iophus sub sector and the planet of the Imperial knight house, House Vasa. Iophus is a hospitable planet with great fjords and roaring seas, making it a perfect planet for fishing to feed the hungry sector. Its spanning forests make for perfect fuel and building materials, though legends say large predators roam the deep forests and prey on the unwary. Iophus prime’s biggest contribution to the imperium though is its knight house, House Vasa.
Moons of Iophus prime
Polia- Polia is home to a medium capacity forge which excels in the production of ammunition void ships and armored vehicles. It mass produces sword class frigates and dauntless class light cruisers for the Imperial navy based out of Bakka. The moon is also home to the dockyards for House Vasa’s massive transport ships and small armada. The forge world trades trained tech priests, and ammunition for the food stuffs and building materials produced by Iophus prime.
Eshoth- A moon made almost purely of adamantium, it is the site of hundreds of mines and tunnels to get at the valuable ore to feed Polia and her ship yards. House Vasa holds lordship over the moon and trades the material to Polia for new knight suits, and vehicles for their liaison imperial guard regiment.
House Vasa
House Vasa is an ancient house tracing their lineage all the way back to Terra; it is led by a hot tempered gregarious man by the name of Baron Gustavus. House Vasa while ancient is a relatively small house with only a small amount of knight suits to its name, but the house makes up for it with a large percentage of ancient revered suits like the lancer and acheron. House Vasa makes up for the lack of suits with raw talent and unrelenting martial prowess. The knights hone their skills in hand to hand duels between their fellow nobles where anything short of maiming or death is allowed. These duels, while seen as un-noble like, allow for a greater martial skill that a house as small as Vasa need to survive in the imperium. The nobles also test their skills by riding deep into the great forests of Iophus prime and seek out the great monsters that live within, a kill of a great beast brings great honor to a knight and possible deployment to warzones to fight for the pride of the house.
Due to the lineage and the skill of the house’s pilots the Munitorum has seen fit to assign a regiment from the death/war world of Krieg to the house to help in their exploits. This regiment is the 78th death korps of krieg regiment, a mechanized assault regiment. The 78th takes the house color of burgundy for their armor along with their blue grey trench coats. The 78th has a high number of veterans which take to the battle in chimeras armed with melta guns and carapace armor, knowing they will be protected by their comrades with their autocannons leman russ battle tanks, and their knightly allies.

Having done a major research paper on him, i can tell you that his story fascinated me too. The Battle of Lützen on November 6th 1632 was a great loss for the Protestants in Europe. With Gustavus dead, literally everything changed again. A swedish metal band called Sabaton did a CD on him and his descendants from the 30 years war to the Great Northern War of 1700-1721. Its worth the listen.

Yeah he has been a historical figure that has always interested me. You might want to check out the ring of fire series, you'd really like it. It is also probably fitting that baron gustavus uses the lancer and dies in close combat or charges a lot

Yeah that was unexpected, Gustavus is an important historical figure but not very well known outside of a few fields. Yeah the giant pits of skulls turned me off of the realms of battle boards, plus the price tag . The imperial city sector is nicer but is a hellpit for cocked dice. So that is why I went with the frontline gaming mats and the mantic terrain, it saved me like 140 dollars and I get terrain as compared to just the realms for 300.

Thanks! I was afraid the fangs would be too much, but when I looked at them again this morning I really liked them. But this will be used as a zombie filler model, about 35 zombies worth, because I run around 120-150 base zombies in my lists so I wanted to mix it up besides the terrible gw sculpts.

Nice vox trooper Ustrello, good shout on the pin. If I were to do mine all over again I'd use very fine brass wire and loop it up and back down the side of the unit like a whip aerial.

Thanks man, sorry I didn't see your comment until now.
Otherwise I got some more fluff written up for my DKoK regiment and Knight House. It is about their current conflict that they are both deployed in force to.
Ethilia-4
Planet type: Argi world with extensive orbital dockyards
Population: 12 billion
Segmentum Tempestus
Sector: Uthuna
Sub sector: Daturn
Current status: Open rebellion against the Imperium and forsaking the God Emperor
Belligerents: Traitor PDF and Death Guard space marines
Friendly forces: Loyal PDF, House Vasa, 78th mechanized Death Korps of Krieg, local Skitarii
Ethilia is a unique planet; with its rolling fields on its massive super continent its fields provide the grains and meat for the imperium. Ethilia owes this to a unique blend of nitrates in the soil and an agreeable environment. The location of the system also makes it the perfect location for orbital dry-docks to re fit and re arm the Imperium’s many fleets. But this also has attracted the wrong sort of attention. In 800 M41 rebellion broke forth, with the sudden appearance of a Death Guard fleet. Nearly 2/3rds of the PDF and the governor denounced the Imperium and the Emperor, with only Hive Aria Hive Pirn and Hive Solime keeping with the loyalists. The Imperial navy ships were able to beat back the chaos space marine fleet, but they could not leave the dry docks least the chaos fleet outmaneuver them and destroy the docks. Orbital bombardment and other actions of those ilk were deemed to hazardous to a planet as valuable as Ethilia. Ground forces were needed to take back at the planet from the traitors, the astropath messages went out and the first to respond were House Vasa and their seconded imperial guard regiment the 78th mechanized. House Vasa deployed in force with nearly a dozen knight suits and their allies. But this would not be a quick war, but one of muddy trenches and attrition.

But in all seriousness, it does seem a bit close but I thought setting it this far back and down it would be far enough away from any blow back or made of fire retardant material to withstand the heat.

yeah I've shied away from faces as much as possible, helmeted marines krieg etc. But now I am doing a side project and the HQ model only has a non helmet head so my hand is being forced, so I want to try on heads I don't care about before I work on that one

Yeah I really like the dark blues and felt they would look super cool on krieg models. But thanks, the table is just a shelving unit on a porcelain top table, so I place my models to be worked on up there and the paints in little school supply containers I bought from target.

So I finished up the hellstorm flamer and the shoulder pads tonight. I also wrote up a bit of fluff on the knight pilot, and I plan on doing a few small stories about her so this is more of an overview of her life as is.
Knight Pilot: Blenda Vasa
Experience: Twenty deployments
Current knight suit: Acheron
Blenda Vasa is the grandniece of Baron Gustavus born on Iophus prime 700 M41. She is a spindly woman with hawkish features, long brown hair and dark blue eyes that flash with anger when upset. When she was born, it was thought she would be a diplomat for the house to further its interests. But she soon showed ferocious appetite for war in the dueling rings. Blenda honed her skills over the course of fifteen deployments in which she used the errant knight suits to great effect racking up hundreds of kills. She recently has been piloting House Vasa’s Acheron knight suit, but not without a cost. The Acheron is an ancient suit and with that comes a machine spirit that is quite powerful, and devious. Soon the machine spirit began to take its toll on Blenda and asserted its personality onto her. Blenda now refers to herself as Fafnir, and it seems that she is now just a vessel herself for the machine spirit to spread its hatred for the enemies of the Imperium.

Stormwall wrote:Same! Also, if you just want one knight, would it be better to get a Paladin or an Acheron?
Thanks guys for the compliments! But the acheron plays pretty well, its twin linked heavy bolter allows for two potential charge choices and the flamer is str 7 ap 3 ordnance which is super helpful. Also to which one I'd rather have that actually comes down to how many knights you already own and if you are running them as a lord of war or in a knight codex army, because with the forgeworld ones you cannot take more cerastus knights than normal knights. So for a knight army you need at least one other normal knight to get the forgeworld one.

Well, it's not like my army is big haha, it's only three Land raiders for now! (I picked up five originally for 15$.) I was really unsure when you first posted that but, the name seemed familiar so I googled it.
With the wonky light the black/grey slate almost looked green on the last picture. I can tell from the first picture that it was a really well done miniature though. The chipping/weathering is ace.

Yeah it does look a little green in the picture and that is weird . But I really like the way GMM did his dusk raiders, though I felt like the storm grey would infer being dark so they could blend in at dusk so I went with a darker grey color. I am glad though I brought awareness to them for you and hopefully after adepticon I will be back to painting.

That pic is much better! Some General tips on photography, if you're interested;
If your camera has a setting called ISO, turn it to minimum, this will make the colours sharper and reduce blurring/glare on bright days.
With the setup you have there, up the exposure time; this lets much more light in, and therefore give a more accurate representation of the colours. This is the best thing to do when using a white background, I've found.
If you are holding the camera close, try instead moving away and zooming in, this will reduce the chance you or the camera cast a shadow.
You may already be doing some of that, but it might help if not.

Thanks for the advice man, I was able to lower to ISO to a minimum and set exposure to maximum on my s3 and I think the pictures came out better, but do you think I should lower the exposure a tad, like instead of 2.0+ maybe 1.75+?
Here are some of the pictures I re took

Woah, loads better! I'd just say try it at +1.75 or even 1.5, and don't be afraid to vary it depending on the results each time. Presumably it's not a massively difficult process to change it on your camera, so it is worth taking the time to play around and find the best setup!

My forgeworld order of ten cataphratchii terminators and rhino should be coming in soon so I will have the rest of the army done before june hopefully.

Man, been a while since I commented. I don't know where to start. I'm glad you are sticking with the DKoK, nothing quite matches up with them aestheticly. The Dusk Raiders look great too. I particularly like the chainsaw bayonets. Very grim darkish.

I love the chainsaw bayonets ever since they used them in gears of war. But I will be switching back to krieg once I finish up these marines, told myself I can't start the krieg until I finish them first.

Honestly they are the best looking terminators, and their armor actually protects their necks! I am glad the base looks good to others, I was a bit worried it would be too little.

I think you are a decent painter man no worries. But I felt like with this urban theme I am going with they would be running around scraping up against buildings and other debris chipping their armor. Also lots of imperial compliance were pretty once sided, so I felt like they could scratch the paint on them but not actually hurt the armor. Really its just playing to the narrative in my head.
But what is everyone's opinion on the chipping? Too much maybe?

Hm. I didn't think of it that way. It just doesn't suit my fancy but, then again I like absolutely clean, or clean and slightly chipped, or knees deep in mud astartes.
I think the others should weigh in. Your miniatures are stellar, that is really my only nit pick.

Your chipping is done well, so while o wouldn't go quite that far on every model, on the odd one it certainly works. I mean, if some rebel or insurgent lobs a frag grenade right in front of him, or he takes a hit from a low-tech missile, then it would quite possibly have that effect of basically stripping all the paint from his armour without actually doing any damage to him.
Narrative: forged!

Good points all around guys, thanks for the advice/criticism Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I picked up Krell lord of undeath today to add to my VC army/ enter it into a local painting competition. I absolutely love this mode, from his menacing look on his face (skull?) to the loping forward motion with the black axe.

Been a bit busy with school, but I managed to get some paint on krell and I am liking the way its looking so far, the sculpt was not the greatest and didn't have the detail that the webstore picture did. But I am happy with it so far.

Got around to finishing most of krell, all that is left is the edge highlights on his armor plus some more weathering, then the edge highlights plus details on the black axe head and basing. I am waiting on an edge paint though from gw to finish that.

Post by: Paradigm
Looks great, both Krell and the dumpster! Only things I'd suggest for the former are a couple of glazes; a green or blue on the axe just to tie the highlight in a little better, and very thin red on the cape, if you wanted it to look like flayed flesh, or brown if you were going for leather. Nitpicking aside, he's smashing!

I will try waywatcher for the axe, and yeah I was going for flayed flesh. I tried to put a very light BFTBG on the bottom part of his cape and it looks okay but not great. For the watered down red wash just spot check it then you think?
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Yeah, do it on a small test area first, and if it works, repeat it on the whole thing. For some idea of how it'll work, see the Word Bearers I painted last month, all the tattered flesh on those was done with a very similar cream followed by a red glaze and a wee bit of BFTBG.

Good to see the marines not hogging all the lime light, and to echo 40kFSU thudd guns rock they are really nice models.
Also you might want to try taking images against a darker background. The shading on krell looks fantastic, but with some of your other models it's lost.
Where did you get that dumpster from btw?

My lightbox only has grey or black, I assume try grey frist then? I got the dumpsters from http://www.modelsandminis.com/.
They are having a memorial day sale right now with 20 percent off, so if you want to get anything nows the time.

Is there a fluff reason for the feathered attachments to the Riders, or is it just for coolness?
Oh, and since OMN mentioned photo backgrounds, take a look at this tutorial. Copying it has done wonders for my minis, it should do the same for yours, and really show them at their best.

where do you get this hussar wings and lance tips?

The lance tips are part of the Death Riders kit. But I'm wondering where you got the wings as well. It looks wonderful. Perhaps think of making the models a bit more dynamic for an even greater effect. If you wanna know how, see the thread in my sig.

Post by: Ustrello
I got the wings from maxmini, they come in packs of six which is awesome so you can do one for the scrubs and two for the ridemasters. But I saw your thread and it is amazing, though I am terrible with greenstuff and would be afraid of messing up great looking models

Post by: Ustrello
Well I finished up the death riders, I gotta say they were a joy to build. One qualm though was that they are on the smaller size so heroic weapons do not fit them very well. So the power axes look a tad large on the ride masters, otherwise they are gorgeous models.

Thanks para! Its defiantly been interesting painting them so far, hopefully I will have them done in time for the competition . As for the raven guard I really like them now, especially with the bulky troops getting shrouded til turn 2 and a plus one to night fighting. Along with of course the jump packs being able to be used both in assault and movement phase. Hopefully being paired with shadow captain korvydae, making assault marines troops, they should be like the old blood angels kinda.

So I finished my death riders yesterday, but was only able to get one quick picture before I entered them into my local gw painting competition. Thanks mosby! Though I wish I was better at modeling so I could make them more dynamic like yours. On the outcome though I did not place in the competition, a converted heldrake won (who deserved to win it was absolutely beautiful) and the 2nd/3rd place winners were part of a gaming group that had all of its members in that day. Though I am not mad about it because that gak happens.

I have always wanted this model since I have seen it on forgeworld and his rules are so well suited towards the new raven guard chapter tactics.
