Post by: Paradigm

Welcome to my blog! Since it's reached a fair old length, and a lot of the earlier stuff is a bit rubbish compared to where I'm at now, I've decided to use the OP simply to showcase a few highlights of my recent work, which you will find spans dozens of games and typically has no direction beyond what I fancy painting at any given moment! My current ongoing projects are an Imperial 40k army, a loose collection of Age of Sigmar forces and an ever-growing collection of Marvel and DC miniatures from Knight Models, but you'll see plenty more than that in here! I'm always looking to improve, so any feedback, comments, suggestions and gallery votes are much appreciated!

I also do a bit of commission work, so if you like what you see and want to add some of my work to your own collection, see the link in my signature or PM me on here! /shameless plug

From about page 27 onwards, I don't focus on armies so much and there's a little mix of everything. Lots of character minis, small squads, and some commission work as well. Enjoy!

Any comments, discussion, questions or criticism are more than welcome, as are any votes for the images in my gallery. Cheers for looking in, I hope you like what you see!

Original OP
Spoiler:
Welcome, folks, to my blog, where I'll be posting mostly finished minis, along with some occasional fluff, hobby musings and any other wargaming odds and ends that come along. I honestly have very little idea where this is going, as I tend to jump from one project to another on a whim, and as such have an awful lot of half-finished projects, things on a 'I'll get to it one day' list, and more asides than you can shake a stick at.

As for what you can expect to see, I collect several 40k armies, alongside Infinity, Malifaux and Deadzone, so there will be a rather random collection of stuff thrown along here, some of which you can see in my gallery (any votes appreciated, it's always good to know what you guys think of my minis) You can expect a lot of conversion work as I really do enjoy personalising models and attempting to make my middling paintjobs look a little more interesting. Most of my paintwork goes for a very grim and gritty feel instead of lots of highlights and clean lines, so if they look dark, they're meant to!

To kick things off, how about a little 40k? The impending arrival of Space Hulk has got me in something of an obsessive state over my various Terminator-related projects, namely Deathwing and a TDA-Heavy Blood Angels force, both of which are currently undergoing army-wide repaints as I've got better since I painted them.

First up, the Boys in Not-Quite-White, the Deathwing:
I've gone for a very grmiy look for these guys, as I can't see the bone-white armour staying clean in combat, even with the best maintenance!

A Dreadnought, converted from an AOBR Dread using various bits and bobs and a little green stuff.

Dark Vengeance Assault Cannon wielder:

A Knight-master, successor to the one interned in the above Dreadnought:

More minis in the galllery.

Up next, Blood Angels, painted up to round out the contingent from Spave Hulk. To this end, they've been fairly heavily converted to mesh with the great and characterful SH ones.

I went with a cleaner look for these, but unfortunately, the pics have made them look a little flat. Especially the legs are more detailed in real life.

And to round out this first post, some Infinity, namely some PanOceania Military Order troops. I won't be doing any more of these until Operation Icestorm arrives, so it will be mostly 40k after these. AGain, they've come out a little dark, I'm afraid.

Again, there's a few more in the gallery.

That's all for today, chaps. Any and all feedback is appreciated, and I am still endeavouring to get a better lighting setup so in future the pictures should be better. Let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading.

I'm gonna have to look these over a bit more when I have more time. I like the grittiness of the marine stuff, down and dirty deathwing. Freehand dark angel symbol on dread is solid.

I'm not sure what you did to make it that way, but your first blood angel terminator is downright menacing. Something about the pose and paintwork just oozes menace, excellent

I definitely like the Pan-O colors, I think there's a sinister side to that faction if you dig deep enough, so your colors work for me

Cheers!

Yeah, that first BA Termie is one of my favourite Terminators I have (out of about 40!), and such a simple conversion. It's just a turned waist, one arm forward, the other back, but it changes the dynamic of the model completely, I think.

Cheers!

Lots to post today, so let's get to it!

A box arrived this morning...

Eager to get going, I cracked it open straight away. First impressions did not decieve, the quality of everything in there is utterly excellent. The figures you've probably all heard are great, but the tiles and counters bear mentioning, as they are very nicely detailed and varied, many have embossed detailing, and they look like they will stand up to good amounts of gameplay usage. I haven't got any pics of the tiles or extras, but if anyone wants some I can take a few.

Now for the minis. There's a bunch of individual shots in my gallery, but for now, a few of my favourites:

There's no denying this guy is awesome. Great pose, packed with detail, he just looks ready to take on an army and probably win.

"Sir, I found this spinal column. Anyone lost one?"

"In the Grim Darkness of the 41st millenium, shoelaces still come untied at the most awkward moments."

And the Genestealers, which were kind of a surprise. I had always seen them as just 'the other guys', the ones I have to paint so the Termies can shoot them. But then I opened the box, and was more than a little impressed. They're varied, dynamic, and just ooze as much character as the Blood Angels in a creepy-looking-alien sort of way.

This guy crawling down a wall to attack an unwary Termie is one of my favourites...

And then there's this guy, the Broodlord boss Genestealer

He's big enough that he towers over the Termies, and can look a Dreadnought in the eye-slit with easy. Atop a mound of skulls that is so gloriously grimdark it goes from terrible to awesome, and holding another just for the hell of it, he's not a guy you'd want to meet in an alleyway, dark or otherwise!

But that's enough unboxing, time for some actual hobbying.

First up, the Dread I mentioned yesterday. He's come out in the photos a little flatter than he is in reality, but I might add some more freehand/squiggles to break up the flat areas:

And the Sanguinary Priest. I think I forgot to turn Macro on for this so he's a little blurred, but you get the idea. I'll get some better shots of him soon.

And the Blood Angel Revival 2014 so far:

Here's a comparison shot (although the lighting isn't great, as the sun went in and then the battery died before I could retake) of the old (right) and new (left) BA schemes, you can hopefully see how the new one is a richer, deeper colour compared to the much flatter old one.

And for a parting shot, Dread-Vengers Assemble:

Now, I'm off to blast some Genestealers. Keep the comments/criticism coming, guys!

Looking good para.

I love the space hulk miniatures one day I'll get ahold of a copy :( (would love to do a genestealer vs xenomorph game one day)

You going for classic stealer paint scheme?

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/09/22 18:34:44

Post by: Paradigm

Cheers, good to see you drop in here.

I'm kind of torn on the Genestealer scheme. I've never painted any Nids before so it'll be a learning curve either way. Part of me thinks I should just stick to the normal scheme, but I also think they'd look cool in an Alien-style scheme as well, and that would be easier as well, I think. Time will tell, I might get one done for testing tomorrow in the unlikely event I get bored of Termies! I also intend to grab some AVP minis when they hit retail and do a reskinnned SH game as well as AVP himself.

So far I've played two test games of SH, and the first was an absolute slaughter for the Termies, they only lasted about 6 rounds. In the next game, I managed to hold out a little longer and pull out a win thanks to more cautious playing and better use of the amazingly good Heavy Flamer. Burn the Xenos!

If your going to get alien aliens you might as well stay with the classic look. (if I get my mits on a copy of space hulk I'll be going for a slightly darker version of the classic look)

This might be of interest to you for your stealers and aliens when you get them.

Cheers, folks!

@Joe: I'm going to try an Alien and 40k style Genestealer and see which comes out best. I'll be going for Grimdark freakiness whichever I pick though!

@Azazelx: thanks! My conversions have come nowhere near the awesomeness that is SH, but I think they're more interesting than bog standard Termies

@40kFSU: thanks! To me, Dreads are more 40k than anything, and really fun models to work with.

Update incoming later when the camera has recharged.

Very nice, AoV, you'll be showing me up with stuff like that! I've just taken a look through your blog, your SH and DZ stuff is coming along very nicely. Can't think why I haven't seen it before!

So, the promised update and the start of the Space Hulk painting. He's the best he is at what he does, and what he does best ain't pretty...

Brother Claudio, the last survivor of his squad, and a man with serious Genestealer issues...

I probably won't get to use him in 40k, as I can't fit him in the list without buying a bunch more termies for an Assault Squad, but he's a very nice mini to paint up and will, I'm sure, be put to good use carving up Nids in the Space Hulk!

As always, any feedback is welcome. I think I've managed to get the lighting sorted as well, so any thoughts on that would be appreciated as otherwise I think this will be my go-to background in future.

Thanks for the comments so far! Next up will be a couple of Genestealer tests and maybe some more Blood Angels.

Looks good! Those are some nice termis in the space hulk box. Makes the generic TDA marines pale in comparison. Too bad they are covered with BA iconography.

Thanks guys!

@AoV: cheers. I think it took about 2 hours start to finish of painting/drying time. I could probably have spent longer on it, but I think he looks good as is, and agreed, it is a great mini. The damaged armour is really cool.

@Nev: yeah, they really do leave even the Wolf Guard/Deathwing ones in dust! I'm kind of hoping the BA get a new unique termie kit with their new codex so I can add a few more non-generic ones, but that would take me close to having more BA Termies than Deathwing!

@ckig: there's always something! Good spot, I'll fix that soon!

Yeah, they are pretty nice, everything in DV is rather amazing. The Chosen were some of my favourites to paint up.

UPDATE TIME!

Genestealer prototype paintschemes. I can safely conclude that the Alien-inspired scheme will not be happening. Here's the test model:

As you can see, it's just too flat, and to be honest about it, it doesn't really look painted at all. An almost-black figure on a black and grey board is just going to get lost. So the classic scheme it is, of a sort:

Again, this is just a test, so the details haven't all been filled in yet. Strangely, there seems to be a blue tint on all these shots, which didn't show up on the camera. But you get the idea. Purple carapace, blue skin. Simple, but quite effective, I think. It's the same colours as the studio scheme, but reversed and lightened somewhat. I think, unless anyone has any better suggestions, I'll be going with this one.

And now the main event: Brother Denio, expert marksman and covered in more purity seals than some Chaplains!

I think he's come out pretty nicely, and while the tint doesn't show it, his colour does match my other BA. More angles in my gallery. I like the blue gems on this, I might go back and re-do Claudio's gems in blue as well, as it stands out much better than the purple and is easier to paint to boot!

Something that had to be done:
"Do you feel lucky, Xenos?"

"Noooooo!"

And finally, as there's more to life than Space Hulk (there is? ), a Blood Angels Sergeant. This is the first Power Armoured model I've done in the new scheme, and as such was a bit of a learning curve. I think it's come out ok barring a few touchups on the freehand that need doing. As always, let me know what you think of it:

Thanks for reading, and keep the feedback coming! This whole blogging malarkey is very motivating! I'm afraid there won't be any new pics until Friday/Saturday as the camera is away, but I'll keep you posted on my progress and answer any questions/comments.

Cheers! I think I've got gems down now, at least to a standard I'm happy with.

Like I said, can't do pics until the weekend, but today I worked through 3 more Termies. If I can keep up the same rate of productivity tomorrow, it should be a massively pic-filled update come Saturday!

I might start work on some more Stealers, as I can knock out they scheme in about as much time as it takes the wash to dry on Termies.

++UPDATE DETECTED++
++SQUAD LORENZO DEPLOYED TO INVESTIGATE++

Yep, here we go, with a fairly large update on what I've been working on over the last few days. as mentioned the other day, I've got through a fair few SH minis, so I'll start with them.

Sergeant Lorenzo

I might go back and redo the power sword effect, as I'm not 100% on it.

Brother Zael

Brother Scipio (not technically a member of this squad, but the mini was too cool to leave)

Brother Goriel

Group shot of the whole squad:

It's a bad day to be a Genestealer...

There are more angles on each of them in my gallery.

And some non-Space Hulk stuff, another Sanguinary Priest. The conversion isn't the flashiest, but his only job is to keep the beautiful SH minis alive in 40k! The lighting has washed out the white a bit, but you can see what's what. I think the chalice conversion is a little better on this one.:

More soon, and any comments are, as always, welcome!

Looks good, AoV!

Mine's done!

Pretty happy with how this came out, he got the dark and shadowy look I was going for. Considering this is the guy who later becomes Mephiston, the Lord of Death, he's not a guy you want to mess with, and I think the model and paintjob shows that pretty well.

Here's a close up of the Force Axe:

This is probably one of my favourite power weapon effects of the many I've tried, I'll likely replicate this on other axes in the army.

A close up of the face. Again, I like how this has come out, he looks suitably angry, I think.

That's all for today, thanks for reading! Keep the feedback coming!

New Update:

I have been absent the last few days, but not unproductive, and now I'm back with a camera I can show off the fruits of my labour, such as they are.

To open things up today, I give you Brother Valencio, Chainfist-wielding lunatic:

And next, Brother Omnio, who has, in his wisdom, stopped to take a call on his Apple iPunch

Between a slightly off-colour gold mix and the lighting today being frustratingly variable at best, he doesn't look great, but I'm happy with it.

And the Blood Angel revival continues with these two chaps from the First Squad, Second Company:

As holdevers from my 'get everything done as fast as possible' days, the posing on these guys leaves something to be desired when compared to my newer marines, but I don't currently have the parts to cut apart and rebuild everything, so they'll do. If the paint look a little thick, it probably is, these minis were only sort-of stripped before the repaint.

They're also a good example of how motivating this blog is; I did a lot of touch-ups on them that, had I not been photographing them, I probably wouldn't have bothered with. So thanks to all you guys who are following along and anyone who's commented!

That's all for today, any comments are welcome as ever.

More Stuff!

After a few days of non-productivity and being distracted by Horus Heresy novels, I've got back to the Boys in Red, of both the Space Hulk and 40k variety. From the top, then.

Sergeant Gideon of the Blood Angels, Breaking both the rules and the enemy with a massive hammer:

The hammer:

I might redo this, it doesn't look too great zoomed in, but does in real life.

The shield:

Just 2 Space Hulk Termies to go now...

And some more Tactical Marines, rounding out the first demi-squad:

Thanks for reading. Any feedback welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

@GD: you don't see them too often, thanks to our neat Assault Marine troops trick, but they are good for holding objectives while the more choppy stuff runs forward, and the box set I started with had two Tactical Squads in. One was converted to Assault Marines, but thanks to a shortage of Chainswords this squad were given bolters.

@40kFSU: hah, I'm afraid you'd probably show me up if you did BA! Now back to work on Guard!

Got a bit more done today, another Angel and some ++REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE HIGH LORDS OF TERRA++

now what could that be, I wonder...

I do plan to do Raven Guard one day, and have a couple of test minis in boxes I could dig out and photograph at some point. In the mean time, check out that RG log from about a year ago by 40k FSU. Too old to comment on, but well worth a look through.

Really nicely painted stuff, Paradigm! I really liked the impromptu comparisons of Librarians haha. Would love to see some more pics of Sergeant Gideon, his photos seem a little blurry, but he seems perdy (in a manly, destructive and Bloody Angel-y way!).

Thanks Y'all!

@ckig and Warboss: I do try and add detail to SM where possible, and most if it gets freehanded as I hate decals. These guys are actually a little boring next to my more recently built Ultramaries, which I'll try and snap some pics of next time I dig them out. Good to see the idea and execution works, though!

@AkhilleusK42: Cheers. I've retaken a couple of shots of Gideon below, if those don't look great either it's probably my paintwork!

Right, it's a bit of a mixed bag with updates today. No Space Hulk, but there is a Blood Angel, the limited edition Sternguard from a good few years back:

Yes, the eagle on the back is damaged, it was like that when I got it, but as I was given it for free by a player quitting 40k, I won't complain; it's a great mini I otherwise wouldn't have owned. I just chalk it up to battle damage! In game, he's seen various uses from sergeants all the way to a Captain Tycho stand-in.

Next up, a Raven Guard Scout Sergeant. What with Ustrello mentioning them further up the page, I dug out a Scout Squad I'd converted and put aside a few years ago, and fixed up the paintwork on the sergeant. I've now got his fellows in the paint queue, so you might be seeing more of these over the next week as and when I feel up to painting black again!

Suitably gory and weathered for an agent in the field, I hope.

The clearer Sergeant Gideon pictures requested above:

Looking at these, I think I need to hit the legs with another wash. The lighting makes it look flatter than it actually is, but Agrax Earthshade fixes anything, anything!

And finally, something of an experiment which I need some honest opinions on. Going through my old stuff looking for things suitable to be used for Inquisition conversions, I came across my old WFH HE Swordmasters of Hoeth, and it hit me. Adeptus Custodes!

Lore-wise, they're supposed to have halberds with bolters built in, but there was no feasible way to convert that with what I have, so massive power swords will have to suffice. As for the rest, I think they match pretty closely with the description. Their power armour is thinner than Astartes
stuff, so that works, and the plumed/masked helmets also fit.

But ultimately, my opinions are biased, so here's a couple I painted up.

As you can see, they're a bit bigger than SM in height but less bulky, which works, and I think they're ok. For those not familliar, here's a picture of what they 'should' look like,

Thanks for reading, and feedback is welcome as ever, and please do be brutally honest about the Custodes; if they look like Fantasy minis with glowy swords and shouldn't be put anywhere near a 40k table, then do tell me!

Cheers for the clearer pics of Sergeant Gideon, he really is nicely done, now he even has pics to do him justice.
I really like the HE Swordmasters as Custodes, the art you've got as the reference of Custodes actually had me thinking for a second someone had spliced HE art with 40k art. I had no idea they actually looked like that, but you've found something that works and are rolling with it. They do look Fantasy-ish, but so do a lot of things in 40k, so the look is not out of place as far as I am concerned.

For someone who hasn’t player WHFB, it would probably work fine. I have, so the HE vibe from the mini is very strong. And because there isn’t much visible work to 40k-ify it, nothing is overriding the “bese” mini and telling me it’s something else. Tossing some grenades, purity seals or some imperial iconography would probably help. I’m not up on the currant lore of the custodes, so don’t know how much is applicable.

The old metal GK terminators used to have halberds with bolters built in. Probably hard to find these days. One problem would be their hands are set for a sword, not a hafted weapon, so a simple weapon swap would look odd.

They look nice, good paint job. I just can’t see past the filthy xenos.

Post by: Paradigm

Cheers folks!

Opinions seem mixed on the Custodes, but as you've all said they're decent enough, I think I'll leave them largely the same. I'll add what few purity seals I have left, and see if I can find some way of getting some piping and grenades on them. The trouble is, being single piece minis, there's very little scope from conversion.

Or, I could perform the ancient rite of Mantic-fication, and just glue a pair of goggles on!

More stuff incoming tomorrow!

Looking good Paradigm. As far as the Custodelves go, the main issue you have is that Custodes are supposed to be frickin' mahoosive so I'm not entirely sold as they. But like you've said, with a view purity seals here and there and bit more grimdarkification, they should look more the part.

Yeah aren't the custodes like super-marines or something? I think I saw a project hereabouts with really meaty tall-scaled costodes, I guess that's why.

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/10/07 17:40:51

Post by: Paradigm

They are superior to marines biological, but from most sources their armour is less bulky, hence why I figure the Elves look the part. With the helmets they are taller than Marines, and given that my IG are true-scale, so a little shorter/thinner than Cadians, they should fit in with them too.

If all else fails, I'll just use them as high-ranking Inquisitorial/Rogue Trader operatives or household guard. Either way, they're more useful now than gathering dust in a box!

Sad times for fantasy models, used more for 40k conversions...

The old sword masters look more or less spot on, except for being a little scrawny . I did used to have one or two of the old force halberds.

Cool Blood angels BTW

Post by: Paradigm

Cheers! I do use a lot of Fantasy stuff in my conversions, I mean, the Empire plastics are pretty much perfect for Inquisitorial stuff. I read you can also use them in some other game without spaceships, Warhammer Fantasy or something....

Anyway, on to today's new pics!

What did I say a couple of pages back about being easily distracted? Yep, this is a BA-less post, so I'll open up with the next couple of Raven Guard scouts.

Converted this chap from the Land Speeder Storm scouts, hence the non-standard pose. I think it works, though

And somewhat more standard, a Scout with a Big Knife:

And a group shot so far:

As you can see, they're fairly heavily weathered. I did this with a combination of ground artist chalks, sponge weathering and good 'ol Blood for the Blood God! As and when I expand the squad/army, I'll be keeping on with this style, as a) it makes black look interesting, and b) it fits the 'behind enemy lines' aspect of the RG.

And to finish off, some more Custodes:

Thinking about it some more, the scaling issues there are don't really bother me that much. Between Cadian gorilla Guardsmen and Rhinos that could feasibly fit maybe 6 marines in the back, 40k's scale is a mess anyway. I set them up as part of an army last night and they looked fine among the rest of the minis, so I'm not really too fussed.

That's all for now, as always comments are welcome!

Thanks guys!

@AOV: Yeah, BFTBG is one of the products I am so glad I bought, not only is it great for blood of varying tyoes, but can also be used for a nice sheen on red/purple gems.

@ckig: I would try to get them halberds, but being that they're starter set snap-fit minis, the weapon and forarms are all one part, so swapping would be a real pain. There are probably ways, but not any I have the parts/skill for! As for the golds, that's just the miracle of Agrax Earthshade wash in action!

UPDATE TIME!

At long last, Operation Icestorm has arrived, and I have finally been able to plunge headlong, with thought for neither wallet nor safety, into the world of Infinity!

A brief (albeit pictureless) review of the set:
ing Awesome! 10/10 ect ect. As one would expect of Infinity miniatures, the detailing is crisp, clean and sharp. While I had assembly issues with the arms on the 3 Aguaciles not quite lining up, the majority went together very easily, and the foldable card terrain was also very easy to put together, no cutting or gluing required, and surprisingly sturdy. I might get another set of scenery down the line as for the price, its great stuff. As for the rest of the box. much the same can be said. The rulebok is nicely set out and surprisingly packed with some awesome artwork that has me seriously considering buying the Artbook down the line. The weakest point is the counters, as they're pretty flimsy, but between Deadzone and Space Hulk O have counters for all eventualities anyway.

But anyway, you're (presumably) here for pics, so here goes. In the first 40k-less post on this blog, a Panoceanian Fusilier:

The base needs a bit more work, but other than that I'm happy with it; I think I've got the style down if nothing else. This is possibly gy favourite basic infantryman mini from any game ever, so I hope to have done it justice.

As always, I appreciate any feedback, and if anyone sees anything in the set they'd like pictures of then let me know. As for what's up next, I'm torn between doing the factions one at a time, or alternative between the two, it'll likely be either another fusilier or an Aguacile.

Thanks for reading.

Like on the other thread, I like how much more serious he looks than a regular shiny blue pan-o model. I guess maybe that is blue, it looks grey on my monitor, but it's quite nice and being a more neutral tone just makes him look more serious and menacing

Cheers!

I did go for a more muted scheme than you see on alot of Infinity stuff in that I've kept the bright tones but the highlightingis a lot less extreme, for a few reasons. Firstly, the super-shiny-highlighting stuff is basically way beyond my abilities, I doubt I could paint in that style if I wanted too. Also, I do think these models with their very realistic sculpts in terms of equipment/posing/proportions benefit from a scheme that is equally grounded. The armour is blue, but it's highlighted to blue-grey rather than white.

In aesthetic terms, I'm thinking stuff like the Halo games or parts of Star Wars, clearly futuristic anbd high-tech but but also nicely gritty.

Two updates in one day! What is this madness?

Answer: too much spare time and awesome minis

So, I said there would be an Aguacile or Fusilier up next, so guess what... It's neither. Oops. I decided I wanted to try out a camo/cloaking effect on the Nomad Spektr (one of my favourites in the set), and before I knew what was going on I was painting. Here's the result:

What do you know, the camo works!

In all seriousness, though, here he is:

I think this second shot shows the camo effect better, you can see the left side and the right leg decloaking easier. Might add a little more contrast on the point between camo/no camo, but for a first attempt at anything like this I'm more than happy with it.

Long story short, she's an undercover secret agent/bodyguard, a James Bond type character, so is in civvies rather than military gear. I agree she looks somewhat out of place, but she's more a scenario/campaign-specific mini rather than a general part of the army.

She's ostensibly on the PanOceanian side (the blue guys), but their ops are blowing her cover, so she basically runs round shooting everyone in one mission.

As for what's up next, I'm not too sure. I still have a couple of Raven Guard Scouts to finish up, I want to redo my Infinity Military Orders in my PanO new scheme, and I need to finish off the last couple of SH Terminators as well. I'm also debating whether to buy the Deadzone Contagion bundle or a Corregidor starter set to round out my Nomads. It's all a bit up-in-the-air at the moment, but there will be more of something soon!

Get the Nomads. The Corregidor starter is a great little set.

I too am loving the new Icestorm Panoceania figures. The new Fusiliers are awesome figures. I'm painting mine up for my cousin who went in on the set with me. I almost want to keep them for myself.

The Nomads are awesome models, some of the first to grab me when I looked into the range, but I'm leaning towards the DZ stuff as a) the solo rules will get me playing a hell of a lot more and b) as great as Infinity minis are, I'm kind of in the mood for the tons of plastic conversion potential that Deadzone box o' Zombies offers...

I saw your work on the PanO stuff, very nice!

Thanks. I broke down and ordered some Bolts for myself since I can't get the Fusiliers yet. It's not like I don't already have a bunch of other Infinity stuff to paint first or anything though.

OPERATION ICESTORM IS DONE!

Well, actually it's been done for a few days now, but no came=no pics. Time to fix that...

First up, the Mobile Brigada:

Next, the Reverend Healer. A great mini, and packed with detail, the face was very easy to paint as it was so defined.

And for the boys in blue:
The Akal, on a mission to Sikh and destroy

The ORC. If there's a mini in the set I'm not too happy with, it's this one. The faceplate needs another highlight, I think, and some of the leg plates need clearing up.

And finally. what's 8 feet tall, wears power armour and fights an endless holy war? Yep, that's it, the Father Knight of PanOceania! (sorry, Black Templar fans )

I think I need to retake those pics of him, the black cross I added to the shoulder pad has made the blending hard to see, and the face is a bit hidden. You get the idea, though.

To finish off, the complete sets:

Not bad for 1 week's work, if I say so myself As always, keep the feedback coming!

Thanks guys!

So, now I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to go next, and thought I'd run some ideas past anyone who drops in here.

My to-do list consists of finishing off my Space Hulk Terminators, repainting my Military Orders Infinity stuff, and maybe repainting some of my earlier Deadzone efforts more in-line with my Infinity style, as there's a lot of crossover potential between the two.

Other than that, I have at my disposal:
- A bunch of Inquistion-y stuff that needs painting/fixing up/building from scratch.

- 5 CSM that have been lined up for a second Legion of the Damned squad, but currently have no purpose. I'm considering true-scaling them, as I've never tried that before, but at the same time, I've got no idea where to start with that, as I've never tried it before

- Various Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Grey Knights and misc minis to paint/repaint.

- Various stuff to do some scratch-building.

So basically, I'm open to ideas...

Super speedy dude and they look great, I've not even finished preping mine yet.

Check vet srg's thread on here if your considering doing true scaling on your marines, his marines look great while still looking like marines.

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/10/27 21:11:21

Post by: GrimDork

I like tall-scaling. You don't sweat as many of the details like the shoulderpads and stuff, just make them taller and maybe sneak in a more dynamic pose. In the P&M blogs section look for veteran sergeant, he seems to have a bit of an attitude but he does make superb tall-scaled marines. I think the heightening happens at the waist join and with a spacer in each leg. I've also seen it done with terminators.

You may not want to go back after you do it though, fair warning.

Repainting stuff would bug me as I hate to undo previous efforts.

Legion of the damned maybe? Could tall-scale them while you're at it

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/10/27 21:28:46

Post by: Paradigm

If I were to true-scale some stuff, it would probably be using the legs+waist extending method, the arms look right to me. I've seen VS's stuff and it would be along those lines. I think, with probably close to 150 Marines in 'normal' scale already it wouldn't bother me that these were different, they'd be purely display pieces as I don't play Chaos. TS LOTD would probably be out as I already have one squad converted, but I may just do a take 2 on normal sized flaming skully marines. I have a few ideas that didn't make it onto the last squad.

It seems most of the painting I've done in the last few months, O:I and SH aside, has been repainting, as especially in the last year or so my painting has come a long way, and I almost can't stand looking at some of the earlier stuff I thought was good. My Wolves and Deathwing have undoubtedly come out better after a redux, if I do go down that road (and I still have the BA I started earlier in the thread to finish up) it shouldn't be too difficult.

Cheers! Hooray, 5 pages!

My reds are basically a base of Mechrite Red (don't know what the new version is), then I mix in a Vallejo light grey in increasing amounts to highlight without going pink, hit it with a black or brown wash (black for hard lines like Infinity, brown for smoother stuff like the BA earlier in the thread), and then do one or two more layers depending on the tone after the wash. I'm afraid that's not much of a recipie, but beyond paint names I tend to do most of my highlighting by eye. Very unprofessional, I know.

Should be some updates incoming soon, of a Deadzoney nature. Well, Deadzone-Infinity crossover...

OK, I have to ask: I’m not familiar with the game, but the chick with the short skirt seems a little out of place among the otherwise gritty future soldiers. Well painted, but a lot of WTF?

Long story short, she's an undercover secret agent/bodyguard, a James Bond type character, so is in civvies rather than military gear. I agree she looks somewhat out of place, but she's more a scenario/campaign-specific mini rather than a general part of the army.

She's ostensibly on the PanOceanian side (the blue guys), but their ops are blowing her cover, so she basically runs round shooting everyone in one mission.

The mini is dressed alot like the Civvie from the flee or die Dire Foes box. My guess is that the mini can represent a 'hostile' civvie in a regular game, while the Dire Foes civvie can represent a normal one. That is how I intend to use them.

Nice work on the Icestorm minis. Eventually I will paint mine.

Haha, no, I'm not quite that mad... Well, at least until next year when I have the extended versions of all 6 and can do them all in one epic 19+ hour slog!

And now, the Update, now available in Deadzone...

First off, possibly my favourite DZ minis (it's between this guy, the Enforcer Sniper and the Plague G1), The limited-edition pre-release version of the Survivor:

The paintjob is somewhat inspired by Boba Fett's armour, the visor is an early attempt at Halo-stlye visors. Not too successful, but decent enough, I think.

Next, some Rebs, painted to sort-of fit in with my Nomads should I need a few more orders/combi-rifles!

Not as sharp at the Infinity stuff, of course, but they pass the 2 feet test well enough, and were at least painted quite quickly. The mask on the Sniper was basically an attempt to rescue the face; I don't know whether it's a miscast or just the scuplt, but I found her face fairly flat (her nose was all but non-existant) so figured the best way to add a bit of character was a mask. It fits the style of the Rebs, I think, and looks pretty cool.

On a side note, the LotR-athon has got me wanting to dig out, fix up and show off some of my many LotR minis, would any of you folks be interested in seeing them here?

That's all, cheers for the continued support/motivation/nagging me to get something done!

Dug out a good 20+ LotR character minis in salvagable condition earlier, so expect some trips to Middle Earth on here in the updates to come. The only question is where to start, so any suggestions? Ok, two votes for Rohan then. I have Eowyn (henceforth known as 'horse-dude chick ) and the Witch King, along with Merry (the hobbit who was also there), so I might paint those three up and do some kind of diorama base, maybe with a dead Theoden as well...

And the plan is a go! The three involved minis are now assembled, so tomorrow I'll be having a little bit of a play with posing/setting the piece and get to work painting.

I've also spotted a few more matched sets of minis that could be diorama-worthy, so I may end up doing a few more of these eventually.

Erm... probably too much... There was a magazine that ran a few years ago with minis in every issue (and insanely cheap compared to today's prices), and over 90-odd issues of that and some supplemental purchaes I've managed to get at least 1 version of every major character, small armies for most factions in the game and larger armies for the main players (I have a ton of Gondor and quite a bit of Mordor and Rohan). Some of it is in a severe state of disrepair, or painted terribly by my 8-year-old self, and one day I plan to fix it all up.

Was there anything in particlar you wanted to see?

Diorama progress update: Eowyn is done barring the base, Witch King is mostly done (well, as done as a model that is 100% black or silver ever can be) and the wash is drying on Merry. Milliput layer 1 is drying on the base, that will need at least one more layer of that/GS before painting can start.

I actually have a Balin's Tomb display base mostly painted up with the Fellowship all done, it's a very solid chunk of resin that I can't quite recall how I got (might have been a free gift with the magazine subscription). All I need to do is paint the rim at some point, so I can try and snap some pics of the almost-complete display over the next few days.

And 'tis done! Pics below, but first, to set the scene...

"Begone, foul Dwimmerlake, Lord of Carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will, but I will hinder it, if I may."
"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. I am Eowyn, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will kill you if you touch him!"

From Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien

There we go. The completed diorama, inspired by the passage above and its corresponding scne in the movie (and for the purist out there, yes, they are in slightly the wrong places and no, that is no actually Theoden under the horse! It's artistic liscence! ). The base is an upturned coffee mat, layered with milliput and Green Stuff to add some texture and then painted and covered with a mix of flock, grit and sand. Each mini is also removable for use in-game.

Eowyn:

Merry:

The Witch King of Angmar, Sauron's chiefest lieutenant and lord of the Nazgul:

Finally, some scale shots with SM just so those of you unfamilliar with the minis can see how detailed and tiny they are (seriously, in terms of being fiddly, Infinity got nothing on true-28mm hobbits!). Also a teaser of what will be up next as/when I get some more LotR stuff done.

That's all of it (bar a few other angles you can see in my gallery). Overall, I'm pretty happy with it; it was fun to put together, captures one of my favourite scenes in anything ever, and looks pretty good on the shelf. This is probably the most elaborate diorama I've done (that's not saying an awful lot, though), but already I'm thinking of ways to top it. Not exactly sure what the next one will be, but at the moment I'm weighing up:

The scene where Merry and Pippin escape into Fangorn Forest while Eomer and his riders attack the Orcs/Uruks that held them captive
OR
The big one, the death of Sauron. I have the Dark Lord himself, a dead Elendil and an Isildur with the broken blade, so that won't need much converting, but I'm thinking of going big and having a whole battle playing out around them.
OR
Something in Osgilliath, with Faramir and some Rangers/Warriors holding the city. I have an Orc barge I built years ago that could fit in with this too.

As ever, any comments are more than welcome, let me know what you think of it and if you have any ideas for other scenes, I just might be able to do them. I'll also dust of my Balin's tomb diorama and photograph that at some point soon as well.

Cheers! I'm leaning more toward Osgiliath, I think, as the terrain will be somewhat easier to build (ruins vs trees).

Actually, it's a Legion of the Damned marine, not Chaos, but thanks anyway! Hopefully the paintscheme will make it a bit more recognisable!

Unfortunatly it won't feature 'Wraithses with wingses!' as I don't own that model. It's one of my all-time favourites in both its versions, the metal and the plastic one, and if I ever find myself with £35 spare I fully intend to grab one.

Haha! I think that would probably merit its own diorama, probably with Legolas kicking ass on the back of it! Like the Nazgul on Fell Beast, it's on the 'one day I'll buy that' list... Hard to spend money on a game I'll never get to play, but then that didn't stop me with Infinity/Space Hulk/Deadzone...

Lighting's crap here today (English winter's on the way, I think) but if it clears up I'll get some pics of the Fellowship diorama and throw them up here.

Update time!

Unfortunately, no LotR in this one, as I've got a bit sidetracked in last few days. On the plus side, I did find the last mini I may need for the Osgilliath diorama or another one I have in mind. The LotR stuff will be back, though, and soon. One month until the final Hobbit film, so I might try and get the rest of Thorin's Company painted up before then as well (god knows I've had them long enough!)

Anyway, the fruits of my sidetrackedness: The Blood Angels are Back!

First off, the High Chaplain Astorath the Grim, Redeemer of the Lost, and incidentally one of the coolest minis ever made!

Next up, the big guy, Dante, Lord of the Host, and honestly, one of the best aging models GW do. I think it was 3rd Ed this guy first appeared, but you wouldn't know by looking at it!

And finally, a Sanguinary Guard, standing alongside these two in his role of 'just some guy'!

That's all for today! As for what's up next, more LotR, more BA, and the world's most grimdark inquisitorial hover-chair (possibly). As ever, and comments and criticism are welcome!

With exception to the OTT amounts of scripture dangling from Astaroth the Grim's arse, I do like the model a lot. Very choppy

Nice job on Cmdr Dante too. Looks blingy but gritty at the same time.

Cheers chaps!

I've just put the finishing touches to something completely different that, light permitting, will be posted tomorrow some time. All I'll say is that it's scratch built, counts as, fairly big and is better at shooting his own guys than the enemy... Internet points for anyone who guesses before I post it!

And now for something completely different...

Presenting Lord Inquisitor Aberforth Vetinari, Ordo Hereticus! Also on display is this year's =I=chair, featuring a vox amp for proclaiming, a Malta for purging and a crackling inbuilt fire, so you'll never be too busy to Burn the Witch!

I'll be the first to admit the paintjob is a little quick and dirty, and probably not helped by the crappy light, but this chap was all about the modelling. The whole thing was built from plasticard, sprue and bits, with a little GS for the legs and flames. The head I chose from a High Elf Silver Helm as it just had a wonderful look of disdain that fits the character. The vox-amp in his right was made from a Deathwind missile launcher and plasticard, the melta was taken from a SW Dread. Overall, I'm happy with how he came out; the painting is hardly my best, but I think the build is decent and he should be fun to use game as Karamazov.

Yeah, the whole thing is a love-it-or-hate-it mini, I guess. It's pretty ridiculous and over the top, so I'm hoping it'll go down well with 40k players, but for those who prefer sci-fi a little less impractical/more 'clean', I can see how it would look odd.

Nah it's definitely an interesting model, the floaty chair with guns and vox caster reminds me of like 3rd edition book artwork, but only if he had some cherubs or skulls trailing seals.

Rather a mixed bag in today's update!

First off, the second of my Sanguinary Guard:

Really quite happy with how the gold is coming out, and more pleased with the wings on this one.

And now, back to Middle Earth. Begin shameless self promotion:
In currently managing a LotR hobby competition down in subforum, so if anyone who has reads his fancies showing off any LotR stuff, old or new, that you might be sitting on, please do drop in there! With the new Hobbit movie inbound, there's no better time to get involved!
End shameless self promotion...

And here we have the Mouth of Sauron, evidently prior to his encounter with Aragon as he still had his head...

Quite a quick simple paintjob, mostly a fix up from the work I did on him a few years ago.

And the man himself, Aragorn, King of the West:

There's some pics of the on foot version in my gallery is you want to take a look, but thanks to the great black clouds we have here today they're a little indistinct. I'm off to try again once I've finished here, and I'll update if I can get some better ones.

Some Rohirrim I've painted up for a Battle Company (LotR with RPG elements) to be led by Eowyn:

And finally, a larger scale figure of the wizard Radagast. This was actually a toy from a few years ago, a single-colour statuette stocking filler type thing, but I gave him a lick of paint and he now makes a decent enough piece to put on a shelf.

That's it for now, as always any comments are welcome!

Well here's the first two!

Another Sanguinary Guard, this time the squad leader with power fist and plasma pistol:

Again, pretty pleased with how he looks, the squad together is rather cool.

Next, some LotR, the start of a Gondor army. For years I've had these minis, but ironically I've never had a fully painted force for the game. So now, I've actually started working towards towards that goal. By Christmas, I want to have a 700 point list painted, and here is the first warband:

Led by Boromir, and with a core of swordsmen/spearmen, a banner and a pair of archers, just in case I play a 300 point game (this force is 298) and want a little shooting.

And the start of the next warband, Rangers led by Faramir:

That's all for today, comments are welcome as ever.

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/11/22 14:15:37

Post by: Paradigm

A 700 list is probably slightly larger than an average list, mine is something like this:

Warband 1: 298
Boromir
4 sword and shield
4 spear and shield
1 banner
2 archers

Warband 2: 140
Madril
5 Rangers
5 Rangers with spears

Warband 3: 124
Denethor
3 Fountain Guard
6 Knights of Minas Tirith

Warband 4: 118
Faramir, bow
7 Osgiliath Veterans with Shields

But that does have a lot of expensive characters. For starting out, I'd pick a character and faction you like and just build a small force around them. The game downscales quite nicely, so even at about 250 points you should have fun.

Saw that in N&R. The captain looks pretty cool, and the set is undeniably great value (I think someone priced it out at £180ish for £75). That said, it's the same price as Space Hulk, and of the two, I'm glad I got SH, as ultimately the models are of more use to me. I have close to 50 Termies between BA, GK, Deathwing and SW, and plenty of dreads, and no real use/interest in the Nids. Unlike Stormclaw, I don't think I'll be kicking myself for not getting this.

While I could probably buy it, keep the BA and books and turn a profit on the Nids, I don't really have the cash for it at the moment. I might grab some DC if I see them cheap on eBay, but that's about it.

Update incoming tomorrow, Gondor Tower Guard and anything else I get through tonight...

@Sir Samuel: there will be some more BA from me soon, even if it's not the new stuff. Still in the queue are the last couple of SH Termies, two more Sang Guard, some Death Co, and more Assault/Tactical marines. Also, a Land Raider, but that's probably going to be quite far down the list...

Smallish update today: Denethor, Steward of Gondor, and his bodyguards/in-game straightjacket should he go nuts, the Guard of the Fountain Court.

Denethor has come out a little flat, the lighting disagreed with his colours today (who knew that photographing grey on grey on a grey day was here?) But the rest are pretty accurate to the actual paint jobs. They are deliberately brighter than the rest of the force, as unlike the common soldiery, these guys have not spent months in a city under siege.

Mega-update! Here's a look at what I've done in the last few days.

First, the Osgiliath Veterans, converted from Warriors of Minas Tirith with weapon swaps, GS rags and a healthy dose of Typhus Corrosion wash:

Rangers of Gondor, now with a full warband:

They're pretty hard to get good pics of as they are so dark, but that's kind of the point of camouflage! There's a mix of tones in there to show that they're a varied and ragtag bunch, some have been in the city for months, some have just come from the wilds and woods.

And their commanders, Faramir and Madril:

And now, the other side. I've made a start on the opposing Mordor army, beginning with this large contingent of Orcs:

If you know the models, you can spot a lot of conversions in these, mostly weapon swaps. I've always liked the scavenging, ramshackle aspects of Tolkien orcs, so there's all kinds of weapons here, from a Gondorian spear to an Easterling swords. The most notable is a set of Gondorian armour you can see on the second Captain.

Lastly, some Corsair of Umbar converter with Crossbows and tower shields, all the weapons on these were scratch built and think they're come out rather nicely:

That's all for today, thanks for looking!

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/12/01 13:46:23

Post by: Paradigm

Cheers!

Whether or not I go for the new Tactical kit largely depends on price and content. If it's the same price of a couple of quid more than the current Tactical kit (which I love!) I may get one and convert it to an on-foot Assault or Death Co squad, bit if it's much more than that, I am more than happy enough with the current one.

It is probably going on to the end of the shopping list, though, as I rarely get to play 40k with the stuff I already have, and I have quite the backlog of BA to work through as well.

Currently, my to-buy list is Deadzone Contagion, Malifaux Lucius crew, Infinity Corregidor and a Hobbit Dwarf army. With fairly limited budget, it's going to take me a while to get through that, but if the new BA are completely awesome, they may well jump the queue; my hobby tastes are nothing of not fickle...
In fact, this LotR binge may be the longest I've spent on one system/army for years! *looks awkwardly at primed BA on desk*

Thanks! Do you have anything in mind for the style of your own LotR stuff?

I was going to update today, but couldn't get a decent pic of anything thanks to really bad lighting. I may experiment with setting up a new lighting area with lamps now we're getting into winter, but my previous attempts at that haven't ended too successfully, so we shall see.

And going back to the BA Tactical Squad, having seen more of them I'll almost certainly be grabbing one or two in the new year. For only a pound more than the basic Tactical kit there's enough unique stuff to make our easily worth it. Whether it not they end up as Tactical Marines, however, is a rather different matter... (And largely depends on how many chainswords I can get together)

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/12/02 15:22:06

Post by: ckig

I'm thinking of painting them in different colours to the studio scheme. It'll be fun to experiment on the fellowship models and make them each nice and unique. Other things like the uruk-hai though, they're pretty much just all in metal so not much wiggle room lol. I'm still deciding whether I want a clean neat look or try some my hand at weathering and stuff which I haven't done before.

Are you going to try make a lightbox? I want to make one too but I'm lacking in lamps and space atm.

Paradigm's Hobby Blog: Dagger Dagger Dagger! Vax'Ildan Arrives @ 2014/12/02 16:38:29

Post by: Paradigm

I don't think I have the time/space/materials for a proper lightbox setup, sadly. I did have a bit of a fiddle with my desk lamp and various backgrounds, but couldn't get anything close to the kind of pics I'd been getting with natural light, so I guess I'll just have to hope my bursts of productivity coincide with good weather!

A non-movie Fellowship could be cool to see; I'm usually a bit of a purist when it comes to LotR, but I reckon you could easily make it work. With the uruks, the best way to vary them I think is to switch up the skin tones, having some brighter and more flesh coloured and some darker and more 'muddy'. Personally, I think LotR stuff lends itself to a more subdued and 'real' feel, but I've also seen some of it look good in very clean and neat style

Update: Termies and Tacticals Two!

No LotR today; I'm still soldiering on with the Knights of Minas Tirith, but progress is slow. I may crack on with Mordor soon, but if I don't buy the Dwarves I'm looking at over Christmas, I'm possibly saving them for a January army competition.

So today it's back to almost where this blog began, Space Hulk. The last two Terminators of Squad Gideon are done! First up, Brother Noctis, the squad's chief pointer. You need something pointed at menacingly/heroically, he's your man!

And next, Brother Leon, employed when a Storm Bolter just isn't enough...

It'll be a shame not to have these exquisitely detailed minis to paint between more mundane stuff, but on the other hand, I now have a very nice set of models that should look great on the board. I'll get some group shots of them all when I have more consistent lighting.

And to finish things off, a pair of Tacticals, now a bit bland given the new set. They fit in with their squadmates, though, and that's all one ask.

Up next will probably be some more LotR, perhaps the rest of the Sanguinary Guard, and anything else that grabs me.

Hah, I think my paintjobs might be deceptive! The red is just Mechrite red base, Agrax wash, rehighlight with thinned MR, and the gems are just painted light blue and washed dark! Washes are good!

If I'm honest, the reason I do so much freehand and squiggles/scripture is partly to disguise the fact the highlighting style is pretty minimalist! It makes the models pop more, but before that stage they can look a bit bland with all the large armour plates and fact I refuse to faff around with transfers...

I think its easier to make a model look bad with poor transfer application than it is to get them on there nice and properly, I avoid them too.

All I know is your stuff looks good when I see it on my screen, if it isn't *that* much work then all the better I've seen photos where people will go into 10-20 steps of how they got their colors and you just can't see it, so maybe a Kudos for your photography is required too

Thanks guys!

@ckig: I'm currently working on something special for the BA, so light dependant, I'll take some army pics of them tomorrow. As it stands, I have most of a Tactical Squad, a dozen Termies, parts of Sanguinary Guard and Assault Squads, a Dread and more Commanders than is probably good for me! Not even a playable force yet, even as allies, but I mean to crack on with the Tacs and Assaults when I grab some more primer, hopefully tomorrow.

Haha, bias to Blood Angels is welcome here!

Update of Many Pictures!

First, something that those who recall 2nd Edition should recognise (well, if you squint a bit! ), Captain Aphael of the Second Company of the Blood Angels, based on the cover art for the 2nd Ed boxed game. I've taken a lot of artistic licence with the idea and execution, but I hope you can at least see where the conversion was coming from. This guy just kind of exploded from seeing that power fist in my bits box and making the connection with that art.

Like I say, not an exact replica, but the closest I'll get without paying eBay prices for the GD model. It was fun to put together, and a nice nod to a history I'm too young to remember! Of course, GW would chose the same day I build this to publish some actually artwork for Aphael that looks nothing like this, but oh well.

And now, as promised, some group/army shots as I have actually got some good lighting today!

First, the rest of Tactical Squad Vinci:

Next, the Termies from Space Hulk:

Some misc Termies:

Priests Ramirez and Ultor:

The Golden Boys:

Venerable Brother Montsano

Company Command:

And some shots of the lot:

That's all folks! I have to say I like how the army is coming together now, it looks far better than my previous effort on BA and once I bulk out the Troops section, it will probably be my go-to army for gaming in 2015. My LotR projects have sold me on the virtues of basing as well, so this lot will be getting the gravel treatment at some point.

Any comments or thoughts are welcome!

@Grim: I think you may be seeing more of them soon enough, with the awesome new kit coming out.

On a side note, some of you may recall a discussion in the Mantic forum about some very cheap sci-fi tanks. Well, the one I ordered has arrived, and from initial impressions, is pretty damn awesome. A full review will be up tomorrow, pending time and light.

Review: BroneKorpus Battle Tank by Tehnolog
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BroneKorpus-Battle-Tank-MK-I-by-Tehnolog-/141491317510?pt=Games_US&hash=item20f18a2b06

Price: $6.00+$2 international postage
Contents: 1 Bronekorpus Battle Tank with weapon options and some accessories
Delivery estimate to UK: 2-4 weeks

This kit came to my attention when it was shown off in a Mantic thread a few weeks ago, and for the price of £5 including postage, I figured it was worth a punt and ordered one. Two weeks later, on the first day of the two-week delivery estimate window, it arrived.

What you get:
The kit came packaged in a jiffy bag with all the parts clipped from the sprue. From what I could see, there was no danger of anything breaking in the post. Here is a shot of all the parts in the set, after about 10 minutes of cleanup:

From left to right, top to bottom:
Track unit, hull unit, track unit
Radar Dish, small turret, gun with single or multi- shot barrels, hatch, large turret, energy gun, flamethrower
Hatch, small missiles, large missiles

So lots of stuff. Some closeups of the specific parts:
Treads:

Hull:

Turret:

My only issue here is the slight gap between some of the guns and the turret housing, but that's easily solved with just a simple plasticard plate. Other than that, I remain very impressed with the details for the price, and the plastic is much sturdier than I expected, much closer to GW plastic than the toy type stuff I imagined I'd be getting for the price.

Assembly and versatility:
Assembly including cleanup of the parts took no more than 15 minutes, and not a single drop of glue was needed! Everything fits snugly together once the flash has been trimmed away, and there is a huge degree of variability in how you can put the kit together. First, I went for a Hellhound in the classic Turret-forward Chimera style, using the flamethrowers and small turret at the front, the treads pointed that way and a flat hatch at the back:

Next, I used the Radar and missile parts to build something like a Manticore. If I had them (and I will soon) I'd add another set of missiles on top to bulk up the arsenal, and maybe elevate them a bit, but as it stands, it's still perfectly servicable:

And just to show off how different you can make to it, here's an alternate gun, the treads and hull reversed and the Dozer blade added:

And should you ever need an obscene amount of firepower, behold the wonder that is Missiles on Flamethrowers on Rockets on Treads on a Dozer Blade:

In short, I rate this very highly in terms of assembly and versatility; out of the packet it has a ton of setups, and it should be easy enough to mount other kinds of weapons or turrets on the hull. Simplicity is certainly not to be confused with lack of quality here!

Scale:

This aspect is where so many kits fall down if you're planning as I am to use them in 40k or other systems, but here, I think it fits perfectly. I intend to use it as a stand-in for Chimera hulled vehicles, and here it is alongside a Russ, Rhino and a scratch-built attempt at my own slightly beefeir Chimera pattern:

So it matches up nicely, I think. Even the guns fit in with 40k's heroic scaling, so that's good.

And finally, some shots of the turret on other hulls. I may experiment with some other turret types for counts-as Chimera, in which case I'll have turrets left over...
Predator?

Alternate Russ turret?

Overall, this is a great kit, especially given the insanely low price point, and offers a great basis for conversion as well. I will be picking up another half a dozen in the new year, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone in the market for a cheap tank. Hell, combine a few of these with some Mantic or Dreamforge infantry and you have a mechanised Guard army for under £100!

Yeah that looks like a great deal. Thanks for the unbox and breakdown.

I'm gonna wait to see what the warpath kickstarter does for tanks, but I'm seriously considering ordering several of these. They look a bit more space/future than 40k tanks and I like that.

An update! Got some more BA done in last couple of days, and looking at the new codex leaks, it seems my accidental decision to build to an elite heavy fairly shooty army has worked in my favour, what with Assault Marines and Death Co clearing off to Fast Attack and Eloites respectively, and leaving Tacticals as the new staple (dare I say I used BA tacticals before they were cool? ). Sanguinary Guard are looking much better to, as is Dante, so I shouldn't need to change things up too much. But enough musings, on with the pictures!

The fourth member of the Sanguinary Guard squad, toting the Chapter Banner and rejoicing at his shiny new 33 ppm price tag!

Next, a Chaplain, somewhat irate as a) there are Heretics that need fighting and b) he's been demoted from the Captain-stats Reclusiarch to a less awesome Chaplain statline. Oh well.

Might need a few touchups, but other than that I like how he's come out.

Finally, a Sternguard Veteran. I've actually done a squad of these guys, but the rest are in robes that today's lighting thoroughly disagreed with.

Not overtly blinged up, but with the gold helmet and older armour mark he looks the part.

That's all for now! Thanks for reading!

Cheers guys!

The Chaplain is on foot, I just trimmed down his backpack vents for reasons I'm sure my 3-years-ago self understood, but I'm dammed if I remember now! As and when I acquire a spare backpack or JP I might replace it.

The Crozius is one of the tops of the BA Chapter Banner, attached to the haft of a GK or DA weapon, I think.

The gold is a 1:1 mix of GW Chainmail and Vallejo Dark Earth, then given a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade. Simple, but effective, which is all I really go for in painting!

Update!

Quite a bizarre bazaar of pics today. First off, some more Blood Angels (hope you're not bored of red! )

Because Tacticals with Heavy Flamers are awesome, I jumped the gun somewhat and built this guy from spares.

More Assault Marines

A Sanguinary Priest (need to get some better shots of this guy)

And a Death Co Marine. First attempt at a new method of painting black, and it's come out quite nicely I think:

That's all for 40k, now for some Malifaux stuff I've been neatening up recently, namely the The Lady Justice crew.

The Judge: this guy has two forms of attack- he either shoots you then stabs you or stabs you then shoots you, and can do both at once thanks to the fact his sword and gun are the same thing!

Three Death Marshals, because Flaming Skeletons in Cowboy Hats are just epic, frankly (although the poses make them fiendish to photograph, so forgive the shadows):

The Scales of Justice, because death is too good to for some sinnerssinners (I can see the 40k Inquisition using this mini if he weren't so tall)

And Lady J herself, Undead Hunter, Blind Samurai and has a penchant for severing heads. And yes, that sword was a separate component, and yes, it has come off at least twice!

And a shot of the lot. These really are amazing sculpts if you're into the Steampunk aesthetic, thoroughly recommended.

And that's your lot for today! Any thoughts welcome, and I'll be back soon with more Merry Malifaux and Bloody Blood Angels!

@ckig: the Malifaux minis really are stellar. Imagine the quality of Infinity but in plastic (so the poses can be much more dynamic without falling over) and you're in the right lines. They can be VERY fiddly to assemble, but as far as painting goes they're a dream to work with. The game itself is great too!

Even more stuff!

Firstly, the remaining 4 Death Company. I've really warmed to the idea of using blues as glazes/highlights on black, it's far more forgiving than using grey, I find.

And the last Sanguinary Guard:

Some group shots of each with relevant characters:

And lastly a Captain, built to be used as one with various Relics (AP2 Power Sword, Relic Plasma, relic JP) for when I want something a little more effective them Aphael's cool-but-not-so-useful Fist and Bolter setup.

And lastly, thoughts on is to come. Barring a Land Raider which will be waiting until I get good with an airbrush, this army is nearly done. I have a pair of Tactical kits on order (one new, one old) to build the remaining Tactical and Assault squad that I need, and then they brings me to a good 2k+ points and plenty of variety, which is enough, I think.

So after that will be the conclusion of my Mordor army (mid way through organising a deal on the last bits I need for that) and then I'm not sure what will come in the new year. I may retouch and complete the Ultramarine Battle Company I'm was building slowly towards, and I'm also thinking I want a small Raven Guard force now I've found a good black method, but it's more likely it'll be something non-GW? I'm hoping to pick up DZ Contagion and Malifaux Lucius Crew over Christmas, so that will give me something else to work on, and I also want to start airbrushing more in new year. I have a good brush I never learned to use beyond basecoating, so I intend to do more with that.

Anyway, enough rambling! Thanks for looking, and as ever, any comments are welcome!

I nicked those Chainswords from Space Wolf spares, as the metal DC set I bought second hand had 5 of the same arms, so I swapped them out for more variety. The double edge really fits the brutality of the DC, I feel.

That's actually why I prefer these much less blingy older minis for DC. The plastic set makes great HQs and Command Squads, but I don't so much like the idea that these guys get ornate armour just to go an die. My understanding of the fluff is they just dump a bucket of black paint over whatever they're wearing anyway, daub some red crosses on and get to work.

Yeah, so this kind of happened...

And then it became this:

Which became this:

And at about midnight last night, this was the upshot:

This is how I accidentally start armies, it seems. It went from 'this could be cool' to 'one HQ short of legal' (in the works now) in a few hours, and while I have no idea where the army if going, it was certainly a fun change from clean red to dirty black, and the RG symbol is not as scary to freehand as I expected, so undoubtedly be more at some point. For now, some more closeups:
Spoiler:

'But I already have 6 marine armies,' I did say
'Nevermind,' quoth the Raven

And among the RG frenzy, I also got some more Malifaux stuff neatened up and some better photos:

Sonnia Criid, pyromaniac witch hunter:

Samuel Hopkins, as played (probably) by John Wayne:

Witchling Stalkers, because why burn witches when you could brainwash them into being sword-wielding Jawas of death?

Group shot:

And some better shots of yesterday's lot:
Spoiler:

And he's the good guy (bonus points to those who get that)

Group shots. Here you can see best how I've gone for different tones on each crew to set them apart. I may redo one of Scales's braziers blue to tie the two together a little more.

That's it for today! As for what's next, I found a good deal on Amazon today for something really rather different, so assuming their one day delivery works out there might be quite a surprise in the next few days...

One last thing: 10 pages! Once more, my thanks go out to all of you that have commented, read and offered advice and encouragement. When I started this blog I honestly wondered if it would ever get this far, so cheers everyone! If nothing else, it's done wonders for my productivity!

I *love* that running scout. Is that standard? maybe I should have stuck to normal legs instead of using cadian legs...

Maulifaux stuff continues to bewilder me, however you have done a good job with them

At least you have enough marines for playing really big games of combined chapter assaults

Thanks guys!

The Scout running legs are reposed from the Land Speeder scouts; in my days when I just wanted as many minis as possible I cut the middle from a LSS to make a normal speeder and then built the scouts as infantry with some very heavy repositioning to get any vaguely natural poses!

One day I fully intend to get all my painted Marines together and do a Massive Mega Game of Awesome. My record is fielding 8k points at once (SW, IF, UM, GK) a few years back, I think I could pretty easily push 12k now, more if I bring all my HQs. The tough partmwould be finding enough local players to match them!

Cheers Meph!

And now for something completely different...

There has been an Awakening... Or I just found a good deal on some Star Wars toys on Amazon, figured there was enough in there to give me a lot to paint while I wait for my incoming SM and Deadzone supply drop, one thing became another and I'm now working on a full-blown Star Wars skirmish and Space ruleset... But a game is nothing without minis, so I slapped some primer on some toys from the Command range (SW version of green army men) and got to work. This was the result:

The Inquisitor, Vader's right hand from the Rebels series (which I haven't actually watched yet)

If you're ever asked to paint a Lightsaber, my advice is, don't! What with most of their colour being the glow around the outside it's impossible to paint them in 3D and look right from more than 1 angle, so all I've done is blended darker towards the handle and added some OSL to convey glowyness? Not perfect, but it'll do (and if anyone has any ideas on ow to get a better look, I'm all ears).

Next, an Imperial Engineer:

And his ride. There's a real mixed bag oh minis in the set I got, in seemingly 3 scales- all the Infantry match up, the fighters seem as near as makes no difference in scale and then larger ships/vehicles that are a bit all over the place.

Once I get some X-wings and such I'll be writing up some dogfighting rules for these, something probably a little simpler/more 'arcade'-like than the FFG stuff.

And the ship from Rebels, out of scale but still a fun model to paint up (mostly with washes, lots of nice panel lines on there) :

But it would be remiss of me not to include at least one actual wargaming miniature in this post, so I give you a converted Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike, of the Raven Guard 3rd Company:

And a scale shot so you can see how the Star Wars stuff measures up.

The infantry are probably around 40-50mm tall, the ships are much larger than their FFG counterparts, and considering I paid just £7.99 for 4 ships and 18 infantry, I think I got a decent deal... And may have just splurged another £30 on most of the cast and crew of the Original Trilogy. Between that lot and my incoming 40k and DZ I think I'll be having a productive winter...

Thanks for reading, and for those who maybe don't enjoy the odd Star Wars nerd-out, normal blogging service will be resumed shortly, as soon as Wayland ship my stuff!

Thanks guys!

In fairness, I only paint fast as I take a lot of shortcuts. Nearly everything I do makes extensive use of washes, sometimes drybrushes, and I tend to leave the fancy stuff out in most things. As for the variety, that's a combination of severe hobby ADD, that fact that I tend to go from 'idea' to 'paint it now!' ar too fast, and am just always looking for something different. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but at the end of the day, it's all fun!

At some point before the end of the year, I'll do a minis bought vs painted comparison for 2014 and see how that measures up. Thanks to redoing old stuff I rink was doing rather well on that, about a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, but this latest Xmas splurge may put a dent in that, with 20 more SM, 30 DZ zombies and close to 50 Star Wars minis inbound over the next few weeks... And all that without backing any KS, which I think would give me huge backlogs!

So I'm 81 up on that front. Two weeks to go, in going to try and push that to 100!

Finally, while I don't have the space to line up and photo all of those, here are some favourites from the year. Go montage!
Spoiler:

It's been a great year for paint, I think my skills have come a long way, and starting up a blog on here has done wonders for my productivity! Here's hoping 2015 is just as good!

The upshot? 200 bought vs 280 painted! Hell yeah, I can justify buying new toys next year!

Great way to round out the year. I remember all those pics except the last two. Love that alpha legionnaire though.

280 painted gosh. I'm not even 1/4 of that lol. Nice productivity

Yeah, those last two were from my pre-blogging days. The Alpha Legion guy is a personal favourite as a conversion as much as anything else, and might occasionally see play as Cypher, as the fluff I wrote for him is similarly mysterious.

I was hoping to have hit a mini a day, and that might be my target for next year, but for now I think I'm happy to have painted more than I bought over the year (and if you discount Xmas stuff/the last week's purchaes, it's more like 280:90 Painted vs Bought). And I think I have come a long way as a painter, with especially the Infinity stuff giving me a lot more experience/confidence.

What's better than Star Wars? More Star Wars! Yep, some more repaints today, mostly from before Christmas but a couple of newer ones as well. I think I've hit my 300-mini target for the year with a couple of days to spare.

First up, an Imperial selection:

Stormtroopers, painted without a single actual white paint (more by lack than choice)

A pair of TIE Pilots. I now have even more of these guys in the same pose, so there will be some conversions coming soon, I think:

A pair of Engineers:

A couple of 'combat droids' (in fact, out of scale pre-chicken-walkers)

And a TIE Squadron, led by the TIE Advanced Prototype flown by The Inquisitor:

Next, the good guys, a few of those Rebel Scum:

Red Squadron, for all your Battle-Station-Destroying needs:

The Millenium Falcon, for all your Red-Squadron-Bacon-Saving needs. Very happy with how this came out for something that is 90% washes:

Finally, proof that it's not what you say, it's how badass you look saying it. You're no good to him dead.

And that's it for now! Hope you lot all had a good Christmas and will have an equally good New Year! Thanks for reading, as ever.

Also Para- I don't know if you've checked these out yet, but there's some pretty sweet audio dramas on Black Library for Raven Guard.

Helion Rain (RG Scouts vs Nids)
Labyrinth of Sorrows (RG and Brazen Minotaurs vs Plague Marines)

Ta chaps!

Squall: The SW 'minis' are actually from a range of toys called 'Star Wars Command'. They're basically the SW version of the 100-in-a-bag green army men, but somewhat more detailed and more expensive (I got most of this for 50-75% of retail, I don't think I'd pay full price for them). The scales are all over the place, but the infantry are all about 40mm tall, and most of the fighters are roughly in scale. The vehicles and larger ships are in the 'whatever fits in the box' scale, so can't see much use beyond display pieces. You get a mix of everything in most boxes, so if you're just looking to pick up a few to paint the prices and quality aren't that bad (especially if you can get a discount; amazon tend to have them cheap)

But as it stands, I have enough for a good-sized skirmish game in the OT era, and the same for a space game (both homemade rulesets). I may expand into the prequels as and when there's some more variety in that part of the range. They are certainly a nice change from painting in 28mm, though, as the larger size does a lot of shading/highlighting for you compared to 28mm.

Next up will be some Raven Guard and some more LotR, probably in a couple of days.

The first update of 2015 arrives!

And to open the show, more Raven Guard. The comment above about how the Scouts looked like something from a comic book hit the mark; I wanted these guys to look as varied and dynamic as possible, so these ones have also been heavily converted.

That last one needs a bit of a touch up, but other than that I'm happy.

And the first half of my entry into this month's Hobbit painting challenge, a warband of Easterling. This is the rank of swordsmen and the Captain (guy with the halberd in the middle), the next will be pikemen and a banner.

That's all, here's to a productive and successful 2015 for you all.

Scouts look pretty sweet. Did you paint the pants / cloth a different color this time or is it the camera? They look darker / don't stand out as much as the last ones.

Like the scouts, especially since you painted them with the right skin tone unlike the official gw painters. Though I gotta say the second scout is giving off a Igor feel
