Ever since first seeing the "flying brick" I've wanted one for my army... in 40k scale. With Armorcast making Titans in full scale I thought it was only a matter of time before I would have my wish granted and I'd get my Gunship. As we know it didn't quite work out that way!
Not one to give up on a dream, I did absolutely nothing! ...except quietly dream about having a full size flying brick. Eventually Games Workshop changed the design of the Thunderhawk, and the brick was relegated to the myths and legends of the Horus Heresy... or at least the game Adeptus Titanicus!
In a random chance encounter in a model shop I spoke to a gentleman who told me how he turned a WWII landing craft model into a dropship... The lightbulb came on and that was it!! I started a build that has the potential to make a 40k dream come true! Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the build as often as I should have- but I can talk you through it, and if Google Images is my friend I can perhaps create a blog that you may enjoy reading...

Starting with the largest landing craft model I could find on the market I immediately set about my build. trumpeter models provided the foundations with their 1/35th scale LCM

Conveniently my local Games Workshop has a master builder as manager and he pointed me in the direction of an alternative to plasticard- I of course refer to movement trays

and two packs later I had the foundations sorted!

I cut the keel off the landing craft and then cut the upper parts of the sides off as well leaving me just a strip and the front landing door left. My intention is that it would be able to carry at least 2 Rhino class tanks so I wanted the front door to work while at the same time having the added support that the LCM gave.

I attached the movement trays to what was left of the "walls" of the landing craft. One of the things that I noticed when using the movement trays over regular plasticard is they already have measurements on them- plus, with one side being the larger 1" squares it was easier in working out sizes!

Actually, Heliodore- Yours is partly the reason I'm doing this. I thought I couldn't do it- and I had asked others to do it for me- but between their efforts and your build I realised I can do it! Especially as I have an old school force that I dare say is bigger than yours!! The tank from WD 104 you recently finished, I built 6 years ago! but I don't have the deodorant flyer- Kudos and a victory point to you!

You'll find I'll be mentioning your name a few times in this thread as your build is something people can compare my build to.

back to the build...

Obviously when building something your mind races at warp speed and you think of a million things at once! As I was waiting for glue to dry I turned my attention to other parts of the ship. I always understood the Thunderhawk to have turret mounted twin linked auto-cannons on the nose, battle cannons on the wing mounted turrets and a volcano cannon on the top. To this end I raided my bits box and found all necessary cannons from Imperial Guard tanks!

For the nose mounted side turrets I used milk bottle tops and the side turrets were paint sample pots! The top most main turret I used a poster tube… With plastic enhancements! I'll post pictures shortly.

Great, I'm glad it could help in giving you some confidence! Totally, with my first scratch-build projects I didn't think I could do it either at first, so I just dived into it, if only to see what I would end up with in the end! Hehe, didn't think we'd be comparing sizes Certainly no match for someone who lived RT! Yeah, just discovered those old templates, and that grav-attack vehicle is kind of (in)famous!

No prob, I look forward to seeing all your future builds!

A feature of the original Thunderhawk is the Gothic window line that runs along the top of the ship. I felt the windows had to be prominent enough a feature to really stand out. I bought some 0.5mm Styrofoam board and drew upon it the arched windows free handed. Using my x-acto knife I carefully cut them out. After that I glued a thin piece of plastic just over an inch wide along the top of the hull… and on that I fixed the Styrofoam board… with windows removed! I’m quite proud of how it turned out!

Here’s a couple of shots of it next to one of my converted twin autocannon barrelled Predators, with forward weapons mounted and wing turrets in an approximate position to wear they’ll be.

Some interior pictures for you. You can see the low walls of the landing craft and the floor and front door of the LCM have been integrated. I had to cut off the top of the landing door but I thought it made a nice railing so I put it in the vehicle to keep it! You can also see the structural supports that have been added to help strengthen it.

At the moment you can see that while it does hold 2 tanks it JUST holds a Predator due to the width of the tank... I have every intention to add a little bit of interior to it so it won't hold a Predator anymore- just Rhinos without side sponsons- as is represented by the Rhino manticore in the last picture

Rogue Trader Thunderhawk Gunship and other builds @ 2014/09/25 15:40:47

Post by: Capt.

@Veteran Sergeant, you say you don’t understand why… I suppose that’s an oversight on my part. Allow me to explain… As I said in my first post I started in 1987 with the advent of Rogue Trader, but what I didn’t say is I still have my original Army. My 40k force doesn’t include anything (with the exception of the odd figure and a few vehicles) past 1993! It is a true RT army… and at 3 companies of troops, support units, Tanks and Titans already in the army a Thunderhawk was the next logical step… and the only direction I could go in!

@jreilly89 I have considered a colour scheme- Green! Not quite Dark Angel green but damn close! I’ve also been thinking about your question/ suggestion about putting it on a flying base and I think I’ve worked out a way of doing it… well actually making it so that it can be either in flight or on the ground… using magnets on the landing gear and a bloody strong flying base… I’ll have to look at GWs large flyer base very carefully!

Back to the build…
The Thunderhawk has a vent on the roof- after a lot of thinking/ planning and searching I stumbled on this from Lego! (Lego is my friend!)

Post by: jreilly89

Love it! As far as the base, haven't messed around with the flyers, they seem stable enough, but if they're anything like the Land Speeder bases, a tumble from desk height to soft carpet will snap them in half

Of course he did.
He wants you to spend money in his store on GW markup instead of buying somewhere else at a reasonable price.

Rogue Trader Thunderhawk Gunship and other builds @ 2014/09/27 14:55:48

Post by: Capt.

@ Nowlan normally I would agree with you, but on this occasion the movement trays were just what I needed! they enabled me to make perfect measurements and the lines on them work as panel lines on the ship. Obviously you have to decide whether to buy them depending on what it is you're building, but in the case of this build- I'm pleased with them...

A concern I had from the moment I started this build was the boosters on the back. 4 large engines propel this behemoth through the skies and considering the size of my ship, I had to pick something suitable.
Heliodore used furniture feet- pretty ingenious- but I thought, in my opinion, they were a mite too small… looking for something substantial- Lego once again came to the rescue with wheel cones from Lego Technic! These had enough moulded on detail that I didn’t need to add any, plus they were of a size I thought fit the hull.

I cut the “teeth” off so they would fit flush with the hull- and now they just need attaching and painting!

Remember those “teeth” I cut off the boosters? Well, that wasn’t the end of them- I dotted a few around the crown of my Volcano Cannon turret to simulate the battlements on the miniature. I know they aren’t exactly like the mini and part of me is a teeny bit bummed about that but I think once it’s painted it may not look so bad…

I was considering making the turret rotate, but I decided against it- it is, after all, a model not a toy, right? Oh… that’s not the last of those “teeth” either!

@ Ruglud Thanks a lot- I hope it continue to stays interesting for you.

Landing gear is a question that was asked of Heliodore when he built his Thunderhawk- his answer, I think, was inspired! So, taking his suggestion I procured landing struts from Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon! They are perfect. I cut mine a little lower than he did- thinking about the front door lowering and having tanks roll out, I needed my Thunderhawk lower to the ground. I also added a “cradle” as it were from GW cavalry bases so they fit firmly onto the underside of the hull.

The lading struts weren’t the only thing from the Falcon I found… the engine panels that run round the ship became part of the interior of the Thunderhawk. After undercoating and drybrushing these were mounted on the inside near the door. It strengthens the nose, adds extra support for walls and roof and when the door is open it looks pretty good!... well, I think it does!

That's a nice bunch of greebles you've coughed up on the interior there. Cool..

The front door/ hatch of the Thunderhawk was always going to be a feature! Looking at the mini it had features not unlike that of the landraider… well- after being a little wobbly on the turret I decided to concentrate on making this as accurate as possible to the mini, so the front door of the landing craft was given an extra panel that fit with the ship… this was in turn adorned with strips of plasticard topped with original 1980’s Rhino sprues cut to shape… and to cap it off? There are those “teeth” again!

The door closes onto the hull properly- the use of the moulded parts on the edges of the door enable it to clamp onto the walls of the ship and stay there! It means the Thunderhawk has a working door and, once painted, I’m sure will work even better!

You know, I was asked what colour I would paint this- and my first answer was green as the army and the armour is green, but part of me is considering aluminium... or even white...

@ jreilly89 Thanks- It's a decision that I'll probably make when it's completely finished but I do appreciate your view.

@Slipknotzim Thanks I'm pleased with it myself (and that doesn't always happen)!

Back to the build...

Some of you will have already spotted them, but I figured I’d mention them all the same… Although not actually on the original mini I thought a ship this large- which uses feet instead of wheels- would probably have some difficulty lifting off and landing. I decided it could probably use some thrusters to assist… Yes, you guessed it… LEGO!!!

Using parts from the 1970’s Lego space kits, after cutting them down and removing the word Lego, I added two forward and two aft thrusters to the main hull and I have another four waiting for the wings… I know they aren’t “official” but I really like them!

Okay… back to it…

Already happy with the armaments she has, I wanted the stupidly oversized Deathstrike missiles for the wings. Heliodore pointed out there wasn’t much detail on the underside of the mini, but they did include 6 large missiles. Now, Heliodore opted for 6 bombs instead- and I don’t blame him! Tracking down the right thing was a real pain- but worth it when I found what I was looking for in Plymouth, Michigan. Uncle Mike’s Rocket Shack came up trumps just when I was beginning to wonder if I would ever find what I was after!

I acquired 3x 18 inch rocket tubes- which I promptly cut in half, then added 6 nose cones enabling me to get my 6 identical 9 inch long Deathstrike missiles! Now all that’s left to do is install them and attach the wings! (I’ll probably have to shorten them a bit… maybe by an inch)

The wings I decided long ago would be made from modelling foam. It should be light enough not to cause too much of a weight issue but also strong enough that it can take the manipulation of craft tools and still maintain its strength and appearance…

I bought a board 12 x 24 x 2 inches and set about cutting it down. Using hot wire tools, I started with shortening it, for the wingspan, from 24 down to 17inches before cutting a trench into it for the hull of the Thunderhawk to sit! That task was actually easier in my head!!

The cradle for the wing turrets were next. I figured it would be best to put all these details in before I cut down the foam into the shape I needed for the wings. The turret housings were simple enough- just cut out a circle using a hot wire knife! Of course anyone who’s used one of these things knows they are awfully messy! The “trench” had to be sanded down to allow the hull sit smoothly in the space provided… That was even messier than using the bloody hot knife!!

Post by: Capt.

Here’s a few pictures with the wing turrets installed- with battlements- and everything in its place. The missile carriage will be done next, I think, then it’s just a case of cutting the wings to shape and adding the fine details like feet, aft boosters and wing tip thrusters. (Really must sort out the forward roof section!)

Although I appreciate the “Exalting” of my blog (I’m honoured) I would really like to hear/ read some feedback from you guys on what you think.

You mentioned it being dark inside, maybe a bit late but you could add some interior lighting inside to trigger when the ramp opens.

@GirraffeX I had thought about putting a light on the inside- even looked at doll house accessories in an attempt to make it ornate, but my skills aren't of a level that I could make it switch on as I opened the front ramp. Unfortunately. You have given me an idea though- I need to visit Radio Shack to see if it's feasible so I'll update in due time.

@jreilly89 I'll trim the wings down using a hot wire tool initially and then sand them if needed before coating them in PVA glue. I must admit a fair degree of trepidation about this as I only have one shot at getting the slope on the wings right. If it goes wrong, I'll have to start all over again.
I hadn't considered playing it- it will certainly sit with the army as an option, I suppose, but I hadn't thought that far ahead. why?

@jabbakahut Thank you, I regret not chronicling the build from when I started it- but I never have. I've converted over 50 tanks and various other models and never made a journal! I suppose if I had it might be a more thorough blog to help you or indeed others if they decide to do as Heliodore and I have done and attempt this ship. As it happens I hope you continue to enjoy the build.

@daddyorchips Thank you. It's always nice to get feedback.

OH, !!!!!!
Dammit all!
I just noticed a massive error! I can't believe I missed it before- although I know why I did- I'm so annoyed at myself right now!

The aftcastle should be 2 windows wide not 1.

I don't know what to do... Part of me wants to stop this build... part of me wants to try and rectify it but the process would be fiddly, time consuming and awkward. the wing section would be a to put right.

for sake!!

my partner says I should just carry on... I'm just disappointed in myself.

Sorry guys, I couldn't stop staring at it! I went hunting to see if I had any components left over from the original construction... when I found I did actually have some remnants left, I tore it apart!

The rebuild has already begun- and I feel happier about it. not least of which is because the wing turret roof will actually fit against the ship's hull instead of sticking out! Of course this also allows me to show you more construction detail... still, it does throw my estimated completion date out a bit!

Now, a progress update:

With the widened aftcastle came the problem with the roof. I briefly considered redoing the entire roof, but my partner suggested just adding on to what I already have. I have now fixed the roof over the ship's stern but obviously the new sections left a distinctive line on both sides. this has been sanded, it will be filled (if necessary) and eventually covered up with some Lego "grilles" to represent air vents. Granted, they are not on the original Thunderhawk mini- but I thought it might add a little extra detail, while disguising some sins.

We're almost back on schedule!

It's looking good and I think adding some additional details are fine as theoriginals model is so small stuff like vents n control panels wouldn't be able to have been sculpted on it

Okay- been a little busy, but I'm back...

Thank you, kencotter, I'm obviously not out to go crazy- and it will never have the detail of a Forgeworld model, but I will try and be tastefully creative and see if I can enhance upon the foundations I have...

I got cracking on the wings... well, I suppose that should say "I returned to the wings..." starting with the cradle for the missiles. As you can see, they're about 2 inches too long right now, but I'll cut them down after I trim the wings back.

Just an update for those that are curious- all pockets of the wing section have now been constructed...the missile bays, the hull cradle and the turret nests. I was deliberating over weather to build further details on to the wings or finish off shaping them. I've opted for the latter. the next step will be creating the slope on the top followed by the rear sweeping angle at the wings front! Hopefully over the next 48 hours those sections will be completed and I can return to working on the missiles and the finer details of the ship...

WOW! Thanks guys for the support! I really appreciate it!

I needed a hotwire tool... and I couldn't have done what I have without one... but may I just take this moment to say how much I hate hotwire tools!

I've cut the wings back and although I'm not 100% happy with it, I can live with it this time! there's definite follow up work to be done, however.

I have been working on details for the underside of the wings and I am happy with my progress- If I'm perfectly honest the wings are almost done! I'm adding a few extra details and some anti-infantry armaments that aren't on the original mini but I hope enhance the appearance of the overall build.

pics to follow soon

Just a couple of pictures in mid-production, so to speak...

Thanks Jabbakahut, as am I!

The wings are effectively done. I'll need to sand them down and PVA them and add a few details... maybe even add some plastic sheets (so really they aren't done at all) but I shouldn't need to pick up a hotwire again! (Yaaay!)

Here's a few shots of a "test fitting".

The legs aren't on, the front roof panel is also not done and the missiles aren't secured, but it gives a pretty good indication of what it will look like when it's done. Still a fair way to go though- but we're getting there!

What do you think?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've just noticed that I've put the missiles too close to the hull... (bollocks) I'm now in the process of moving them! it's fiddly, and a trifle messy but it should be fairly unnoticeable when I'm done... hopefully.

I'm back... with a healed hand... with a new scar. Thanks Hruotland for the well wishes.

I've moved the missile bays further away from the hull and I'm in the process of PVA sealing parts of the wings. This is going to take a while and isn't very interesting I'll post pics when there's something worth looking at!

Post by: Capt.

While waiting for the PVA glue to dry on the wings I thought I'd work on various bits and pieces that will add the much needed detail to this build. You can see in the first picture the ugly lines left from me moving the missile bays so they weren't so near the hull... although they're pretty obvious right now, by the time I'm finished adding bits and then painting it not only should it not be obvious- but it should be practically unnoticeable!

The other pics include weapon mounts made from Lego technic parts, (you'll see these again in greater detail soon...) cradles for the deathstrike missiles (I quite like these...) and missile bay panels. (I don't know what these are for but they're on the mini so they're on mine!) The panels are basic plasticard, but the stud rivets are adhesive craft pearls... I like them. They'll be appearing on other parts of the ship as well... little details...

I was originally going to put heavy bolters on here but two things conspired to change my mind: 1- I had more Assault Cannons than Heavy Bolters, and 2- every other weapon on the ship is a cannon of some sort! (The first reason was the clincher!) so... what the heck... assault cannons it is.

I didn't take any pictures while I was working on it, If I'm honest it's a struggle to do that. If I get "into the zone" with a conversion, I don't want to stop...

Anyway- you can see the similarities in the Grav tanks- I made some changes in as much as mine has 3 engines instead of 2. Also like the artwork- I have those 2 engines on either side (made from Imperial Guard Hellhound tanks) The thrusters on the sides are left overs from the Thunderhawk Lego thusters.
I was going to have the different side hatches but they didn't fit with the side engines on so the side doors became figure bases! and the underside engine is also left over Millennium Falcon parts (used on the inside ramp of the Thunderhawk).

I've left it unpainted for these pictures so you can see the plasticard and the different parts used. I'll be painting it in a bit.

I will get back to the Thunderhawk... just bear with me.

Hello guys, I just thought I'd let you know the wings are well underway with construction. The missile bays are largely done- One of them needs a little more work... And the main trench and turret bay are done. Next comes cutting it down into the right shape. Then treatment, then adding the extra bits including missiles, vents, anti-Infantry weapons, landing pads, thrusters and engine boosters. There's a fait bit that goes on the wings!

The wings were cut to shape, but unfortunately with handling a hotwire, the slightest twitch can leave obvious failings.
I'm a lot happier with this set of wings than my original set, but they're not perfect. I won't be doing another one though... These will do.
Looking at the dents and unwanted grooves, I thought I'd fill them with modelling putty and sanding them down... then I had another idea...
Foam armour
I first heard of this stuff in 2012 on a trip to London. I've never used it before but its supposed to make foam as hard as plastic. I'll be testing it on the old wings to see how it works, and if I'm happy- which I'm sure I will- I'll not only use in on the wings but I'll also be using it on the Thunderhawk's windows, so the whole ship should become pretty tough

Okay guys, there was a minor issue with my thread but it seems to have been resolved so I'll get back to posting my progress (even if it's a bit late...

I felt a bit jipped with this foam armour- As I mentioned it was supposed to turn the foam hard as plastic...
even the label described it as a tough resin. I have Resin phaser rifles and Resin phasers. I know what I was expecting... It turned out however to be a slightly thicker version of PVA. To say I was unimpressed would be an understatement.
I carried on regardless because I am not in the habit of wasting money, and I applied multiple layers... I am still not impressed

I should have probably used better lighting, but it was a big gloopy mess

While waiting for the wings to dry I turned my attention to the hull Straightening out my milk bottle turrets and filling in any gaps in the construction. I then applied the foam "armour" to the windows along the hull.

Are they really windows? or just ornate construction? It will make a difference when it cones to painting this

Now that the wings are dry... both top and bottom... I thought I'd do a test fitting of the crud that's going on the bottom of the wings.

The assault cannons for anti-infantry (not on the original mini)
centre thrusters (not on the original mini)
Deathstrike missiles
Landing feet
Missile bay air vents (not on the original mini)
Missile panels (possibly not on the original mini... possibly on the mini)

I know ages ago I asked about adding things to it that aren't on the original and the response was favourable. I added thrusters to the hull and I have more for the wingtips. The large panels hide construction but there is a suggestion of something similar on the original mini. The 4 grey thrusters in the middle (I can't remember which GW model they came from) and other bits do help I think.

The front feet are attached to Citadel horse bases. The rear feet are wider and are attached to Citadel monster bases

None of it is glued yet... but will be soon

If your glue isn't sticking to the foam armour, chances are that paint won't either, you might want to do a test.
Maybe try sanding it as well

Post by: Capt.

Thanks for the reply, @Guardling. Paint holds just fine... or at least the black undercoat does and that's the most important part, right?

This is nearing it's completion- I was about to attack the engine boosters on last night and I started having regrets about all the things I didn't do or add to it... I thank Blackadder for this mostly... but I started thinking about all the interior work I haven't put in this...and I could have. I was asked if I would add lights that would activate when the door opened, (I wish my skills were that high) then Blackadder shows he a way I can light it without those skills. I'm still on the fence about whether I should curse him or thank him.... (Thank you Mr B)

Lying in bed I thought about interior work I could add, gangways and doors as well as hints of an engine. I even designed a cockpit in my head and then dismissed it as no-one would EVER see it. I thought about making the arched windows on the hull actual windows- maybe even stained glass- I thought and designed a lot for this... If I ever did another (NO) It would have so much more (I could though... it's not a difficult build).

The roof was secured to the hull a couple of days ago and I was considering taking it off again and adding what little interior extras I can from above, like walkways, engines, iconography (No windows) and lights....

In other news I have attached a lot of parts to the wings- particularly the underside...The bays have missile cradles in them and while the panels are ready I won't be adding them until the bays are painted and missiles are painted up, decaled and installed. That won't take long- the process has already begun. By the way, can anyone identify the thrusters I have used on the underside? They came out of a bitsbox delve but I have no idea what vehicle they originally came from... I could do with two more and I'd like to know what I'm looking for...

While the missiles are essentially done obviously their cradles and the missile bays need tidying up and some drybrushing...
The side Turrets will get a bit more detailing around the battle cannon they they'll both get their primary colour soon, as will the roof.
The feet are black with their undercoat and they'll get some painting detailing around the hydraulics. There are other areas that will follow- Boosters, thrusters, and some additions to the interior...

Thanks for the support, those that are still following this... I appreciate it.

Is there such a thing as having too many Aquilae on a model?
Is there a point where it becomes ridiculous? The drop Pod gives you the option of 5, but the Knight titan only gives you 1. Land Raiders and Rhinos only have 1, The Imperial aircraft (Dark Talon etc) have 1 but the Forgeworld Thunderhawk has 7 while the original metal Thumderhawk had 3.

I ask because I intend for this Thunderhawk to have at least 4 (though 1 will be inside than therefore not be seen unless the door opened), but I could have as many as 17 on the outer hull.
Is that too many?

17 sounds like a good start.

Remember that the Land Raider and Rhino both have aquilas on the treads to stamp them into the very earth they crush.

Right... big post coming...

According to LordWynne's post in Heliodore's thread, this would be a MKIII Thunderhawk. due to the fact it carries 2 Rhinos... when I first conceived building it (have I said this before?) the image I had in mind was described in the (now heretical) novel "Space Marine" by Ian Watson. He describes vehicles and troops side by side in the same bay. That would be far too big a build, but using the same scale parameters that GW used in producing a Rhino that can fit 10 marines, I believe the build I've done fits the bill.

I base coated the entire Thunderhawk- including the hull...I haven't added any of the Aquilae I mentioned in the previous posts, nor have I added the boosters or any detail. The underside has not been painted at all. I have added a couple of extra layers of paint (black, bolt gun metal and a wash of Nulan oil) to the side turrets (which you can't really see!)

The roof in the pictures isn't secured, the missiles in their bays aren't secured (so if they look out of line it's because they're balanced in their cradles) and the turrets and wings aren't fixed in place. It's all dry fitted together. I still intend to copy Blackadder's build and put lights and other details inside.
The base coat has highlighted all the areas that need further attention... The forward hull turrets, made from milk bottle tops, read "store upright after opening" I need to give them a coat of PVA and then repaint them. The gaps in the hull which were almost invisible whilst building it now appear glaring. I can see a lot more sanding and painting in this afore it's completion.

Obviously further detail painting needs doing on the directional (Lego) thrusters the underside and wings and the whole thing will eventually need (after everything else has been completed) a tonne of weathering!

Quite a bit left to do... but it's on the way

Pictures for now... The Brick (please forgive some of the blurry photographs. I will take better ones in time.)

P.S. Foam wings were not the way to go- I should have built them with a skeletal frame like Blackadder's Titan.

Have any of you guys had wher you're happilly moving a long with something and then during a pause you look at it and you say "hmmmm.... I could do that instead..." (whatever "that" may be) and you end up making more work for yourself becaue you had "an idea". That's where I am.... I'm now building interior that may or may not be seen!

It's not designed to be.... The build was supposed to be just a bigger version of the brick. I suppose once I decided to make it big enough to hold Rhinos that changed,, but I never really put too much thought into it. When I started this thread and the build, I figured it would be a five minute build like all of my armour conversions. But it keeps changing. I will be adding lights to illuminate the vehicle bay and the the little bit of interior that I'm doing, but in doing so I have to enclose the lights into the roof. I'll have to see how it works out. The first thought is to seal the whole thing up. We'll see if that's still an option and how these lights work with the limited interior that I'm building

I ripped it apart.

Having seen the works of Blackadder and JohnnyHell, among others, I have decided that my builds are like the assemblings of children. If I want to hold my head up in here I have to do a little better.

The basic hull I'm keeping but I will be adding a lot- both inside and out- to make this better than it currently is and worthy of being in this group and on this forum.

When I reassemble it, you probably won't notice any difference- but there will be changes.

Sorry everyone but it's your own fault... you shouldn't be such good builders.
I'm off to buy some plasticard and some new blades

Shame to hear, but if it's what makes you happy.
Just remember even though those guys are amazing, they were, to use your analogy, children once.
In all likelihood they started off gluing cardboard to a deodorant stick and calling it a landspeeder...

And it's fine to be the child anyway, we get to witness your first steps, your first bike ride etc..

Thanks guys for your input- I appreciate the feedback.

I've started the reconstruction.
The front door was a little wonky and that's been straightened, and the sanding work I had planned has gotten underway.
I was originally going to cover the hull in a very thin plasticard, but instead decided to just fill in the grooves of the movement trays and sand the beejeezus out of it. It seems to have been a better option. It's pretty smooth to the touch now... but not very green anymore.

Pictures will follow.

Out of curiosity... I have asked this question before but no-one answered, the ornate "windows" along the hull... do you think they're actually windows or just ornate decoration on the hull?

Rogue Trader Thunderhawk Gunship and other builds @ 2022/01/27 07:21:14

Post by: inmygravenimage

Ornate decoration, I think. There's something similar on the AI one but it just seems to be more crinkly goodness.

So having taken it apart again- mainly so I can get into the interior, I thought I'd work on the exterior first. I've been sanding like nobody's business. The outside is smooth now. I'll undercoat it before I repaint it... That will also help hide the grooves. This is the port side... I've still got the starboard side and aft to do and once those are done, I'll be working on the inside next...

Thanks Olthanon

Just for a "head's up", I have been busy sourcing and collecting stuff for the inside of the Thunderhawk... It's about to get VERY busy in there! I have lights, gangways, lifts, cables, chains, consoles, observation ports, marines and servitors... as well as the 2 Rhinos all ready to be crammed in the bay. I haven't in vested in it yet but I'm considering obtaining some Mechanicum sets for an engine... Only considering it.

The roof will not be removable. As I'm adding lights- it will be sealed. That being said, when the main door is open, you should be able to see everything inside... well... about 90% of it.

I will post pictures when I start the internal upgrades, but I need to buy more plasticard first.

At the moment, I'm working on my 57th, 58th and 59th tanks to keep me busy. My 60th and final tank will be built after I complete the Thunderhawk.

So I think I speak for everyone when I say that we want to see the 60 tanks! That’s a phenomenal volume of hardware.

Loving the plans for upgrading the flying brick, I love that you’ll be able to fit 2 rhinos in there even with all the extra bits. What lights are you using? I’m after one for a Land Raider but I have zero clue what to buy/do!

It turned out to be more than I was intending to build... but then I kept having ideas. I've hinted at it before but I have an Oldhammer 40K army, so every one of my tanks is from the Rogue Trader era. A few have the odd modern part or accessory but for the most part they are original at their core with most conversions respecting the tank. One other thing- most tanks were built years ago and they're at a different skill level. That doesn't mean they're bad... just they could be better. I still like them. one day I might tidy them up.
I fully intend to post a picture but there are still 4 tanks in construction- not including number 60. I hope to have them finished soon as I'm excited about no.60. She's going to be big.

Thank you. I took a leaf out of Blackadder's book. He used bright white Christmas lights. https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/900/372703.page
I didn't see his thread till the season had passed, so that wasn't an option for me, but I found my lights here:

https://minimumworld.com/

They're a doll house supplier and I've used them before many moons ago for other diorama's I've built. I have 8 warm lights on a string and it lights up my bay and control room fine (or it will do when it's all attached). There are also single bulbs attached to string (which can be hidden) that would illuminate a Land Raider's interior easily. I hope this helps and Thanks again for your interest in my build.

You got it.

Thanks everyone for all your comments

Following the same technique Blackadder used in his Thunderhawk build, these lights are also behind contact lens cases. I've also put some reflective foil behind the lamp shades to hopefully generate a greater luminescence in the bay. Unfortunately, despite this, the lights aren't very bright and I have a feeling I'm going to need s second set. I will paint some of the inner hull aluminium to help reflect what light there is, and we'll see how it looks before I invest in some more... Test run with gangways to follow...

While I continue to work on the interior I thought I’d show you the WIP on the bay control room which can be seen in the back of the test picture I took- it’s already aluminium and awaiting painting details. Made of a Primaris tank control panel split in two, and a Rhino bulkhead, I present the back wall of the booth and in the second picture the front wall without adornment. It’s only silver at the top to simulate the grime and exhaust from the vehicles...
the glass still has to go in the ‘window’, which will happen after the painting, and then the Marines...

I appreciate there’s not constant updates and it seems to be going quite slowly- but it’s reaching a point where all the bits can come together and the interior will be a completely different thing from the the one before.
Previously I had some greebles simulating machinery by the main door, I have made minor changes and but in a door on the side near that machinery. I’ll be painting it and adding details to both the forward hull wall and the control booth wall in a bit.
I enjoy building more than painting, so it always takes a little longer in doing stuff than it should. Sorry guys.

Much appreciated. I'm moving along with it

I cheated a bit and found some 3D printed consoles on the bay of e's I wanted to put them in the main vehicle bay to be manned by servitors... I got the consoles but I'm not sure if I can fit the servitors in there with the tanks
I put the clear "window" in the control bay, but when I was doing it I dropped it and broke the Aquila... The piece of wing has vanished! It could be anywhere but I've decided to leave it broken. I'll drill a little bolt hole to suggest its former location and leave it like that.

Next up the ceiling

The ceiling is mostly done-
a central cradle for cranes and cables, then the lights, with reflective foil and then contact lens covers. The light fixture for the command booth isn’t done yet as I haven’t decided where in the booth it will go... in the ceiling or hidden elsewhere- plus I have marines to fit in there as well!
The two consoles are in place at the back of the bay on either side of a Rhino and as predicted, they’re damn hard to see.
Before the ceiling is fitted I’ll have to add the gangways.
There were going to be two elevators- one on either side- but with so much other stuff in there I had to cancel their installation... sorry guys.

Man! You’re knocking this out of the park! Loving how much detail you’re cramming in and all of the screens are looking amazing. As for the lifts, can you move the consoles to the side walls? Or just put a panel in the floor in front of the with a rack and pinion on the side wall? I know that generally the Imperium likes railings, but you could emulate that other evil Empire! .

The empty space behind the Rhino is likely going to have exposed engines. I am attaching a picture at the bottom so that you can get an idea of what I originally had in mind for this interior, in my imagination the Thunderhawk was a lot bigger and when I tried to put it all in the model it just didn't fit.

The lifts were going to be positioned between the two Rhinos, The idea was that they'd be part of the gangway above and they would lower or rise as a whole section of floor. I had runners that would be fastened to the interior wall and a railing on the outside edge but it was too much, With the lights I had the original walkways blocked the illumination then the Rhinos and ceiling rig clogged up the interior so everything had to change.
Thanks for your support with the build.

Hi Thanks for following...

Unfortunately, that's not really an option for me. The layout of the lighting has the wires going into two separate parts of the roof, and parts of the roof serve as structural support. I guess if I has planned this build properly it might be a different story but the words "seat", "pants" and "fly" can be used in describing the design process and build of this Thunderhawk! I'm confident it will look pretty good at the end, but I also have to accept there's going to be a few compromises along the way!
