Throwback Thursday didnt sound as good so welcome to Flashback Friday.
Each week we'll do a Flashback into the mists of time showcasing some older game systems/models/wargames/projects/publications etc.
Feel free to post a flashback of your own - but only on a Friday!

Today we begin with a look back at some classic GW models. Classic by the way cna have various connotations on this one.....



Oh yes, we begin with these.....classics.



Personally I love the models, they're very characterful and havent aged that badly imho. I know they get a lot of hate but have a definite soft spot with me. So much so I updated and integrated them into my Nids





Next up we have an old 2nd edition Space Wolf Terminator armed with a potent Cyclone missile launcher. Definitely need to dedust this guy though.....





Anyone remember these old guys? Cadian shock troopers but in monopose metal form.
I also redid them for my Imp Guard army under the guise of Mordian Iron Guard.







Next up is the original Bjorn the Space Wolf Dreadnought. Fully metal, weighs a serious bit I can tell you. I need to actually finish him off with a few more pack markings etc.





Yes its the original Ork Dreadnought. Iirc there were two version of this guy, one had longer legs and stood noticably taller. Again all metal, heavy but strangely compelling.




Unfortunately these guys are in my mates house but I have about 10 of them. I intend to counts as them as bikers once I get them back. Really used to love these guys in 2nd ed.

Humph, saving up for Deimos pattern it is then. Have two of the new style for a list, need another two. The size difference is a bit too much for them to look right alongside one another.

Owned the old style back when they were just Rhinos, but never seen them side by side, so many thanks for that!

I have some items that I'd love to share in here and will get some pictures up later tonight.

The old "screamer" Carnifex brings back really fond memories. If I ever built a Tyrannid force one of those models would be included for sure. I love the face on that guy.

I still use that Tzeentch champion.

I still say the original carnifex is the best nid ever made.

What's a carnifex? It was a screamer-killer last I looked.

Some of my old Orks. The megaphone Runtherds is still one of my favourite models. One day I'll get around to converting a new one to bring him up to size with the newer Orks (my current Runtherds are all based off Nobs).

Excellent thread. Proper Oldhammer style! I remember owning at some time pretty much most of what you listed. Most got sold in various ebay sales over the years however, which I kind of regret now especially the painted pieces Ahhh, if I could only track them down

Oh, I'm feeling old now considering I remember many of those things NIB. Not to mention either playing against them or using them. Love the old Battletech stuff. Almost wish I hadn't sold mine but the money was too good to pass up.

As much as I grouse about GeeDub I do have many fond memories, especially getting the new Rhino, assembling it, painting it, and using in battle for the first time. Oh - and love me some classic beakies!

Dang and that kit was pretty dense plastic. I was working with some of the original Space Marines a month ago and that plastic doesn't really even like plastic glue. I wish I had my old Land Raiders. Two to a kit.

Here are some Battletech items from my collection.

Citytech:

Citytech was my first war gaming purchase as a young boy of 10 and to this day remains one of my favorite gaming products. A few years back I sought out as pristine a copy as I could find of the game and keep it on display in my hobby room,

Here is the front of the box. Although the rampaging Archer is presented much, much larger than `Mechs were stated to be in the canon, it is a glorious image that really captured my young imagination. I still get excited seeing the immense size of the `Mech barreling through a cityscape.




And here is the back of the box. I love how immersive the back is, giving the reader some fluff, an amazing image of an even larger `Mech (Stalker) barreling through a building, and the in-universe descriptions of the various gaming systems (Battletech, Citytech, Aerotech) presenting those games as real disciplines of martial study. Absolutely fantastic!




Here are some really rare Battletech miniatures still sealed in their blister packs.
For those unfamiliar with Battletech's tumultuous production history, these miniatures are known as the "Battledroid" variants of the familiar "unseen" Shadowhawk and Griffin `Mechs. They are referred to as "Battledroid" variants because the 1st edition of Battletech was actually called Battledroids, but a bearded fellow by the name of George Lucas put the kibosh on that, and the name was changed to Battletech for the second printing of the game. The initial release of miniatures for Battledroids came out in 1985 and consisted of a mix of original and licensed `Mech designs. With the game's name change the line of miniatures was resculpted resulting in the more common unseen miniatures that are sought after by grognards like me. Of the few licensed `Mech designs that were produced both in the original line and the revamped line, there were major differences in the size and details of the miniatures. The Battledroid variants tended to be larger, less detailed, and had bulbous proportions and often oddly posed limbs. The later miniatures were scaled better, had much more detail and were smaller than their predecessors.

man that fired up my imagination as a kid...

i never did buy the Battledroid minis, but i did buy the original, bigger, plastic Japanese kits of those models from my local comic shop at that time...
the one on the right, with the round head, brings back a lot of memories...

i used to love hitting every curve and driveway on my BMX bike as i rode to the shop, and then coming home with the original TMNT graphic novels, and awesome Japanese mecha kits...

I've always considered that that model was the design inspiration for Creed. What if that Cadian Lt rose to become the head of Cadia's military?

Those old models are so bad....in my opinion anyways haha I mean back in the day they were probably good but comparing it to the new stuff makes them look so bad. The tyranids are definitely the worst.

I don't really have anything to old maybe a dark eldar jetbike from early 2000s and that's it I think. Most of my lord of the rings stuff is still in circulation.

I've been doing a retro Ultramarines project over the last year or so, and also added some retro Cadians for good measure. I know it isn't a Friday anymore, but I didn't see this thread til today and it's right up my alley! Here's some highlights:

SRM, i built that Whirlwind using the square Fantasy Battle base, too...
i think i was the only one i built, out of all the plans they printed in White Dwarf...

1991 was a good year...
that was the year that they printed the full rules for Confrontation (the original Necromunda) in two issues of WD...
i still have a bunch of those original minis...
i'll have to bust them out, and snap some pics...

keep up the good work...

Lead Shadow Hawk from the late 80s, dwarf hero Damian burrock ( I think) and a figure from a old GW fantasy board game. I used him a a coach for my blood bowl team. This little guy was actually in te GW logo on te magazines in the early 90s.


Mk 6 beakys, from 91, back when you could get 3 marines in a blister for less than $5, and a Furbindus dreadnought with a assault cannon modification using an old eldar scatter laser. All these are lead as well.

UM: Xenos invasion fleet detected! Man the orbital defense cannons.
BA: By the Throne, this device is ancient. It must pre-date the dark age of technology.
UM: No time for techo-archeology, they have initiated evasive maneuvers!



So for today’s Flashback Friday, I bring you two RT marines on an Atari 2600. If I were to flash back any farther, I’d have to send you sepia toned pictures via carrier pigeon.

I forgot my copy of Heroquest is in my friends house which is a kick in the.
So instead I rooted out this guy, lets have a look inside.....



This book came with the 2nd ed 40k box set. The box contained three main books - the rulebook, this book which outlined wargear and a background book titled Codex Imperialis iirc. It also had a small publication which outlined army lists including one for Genestealer Hybrids and Squats!
Wow.



Heres the inside credits page, is Priestly still with GW? Never hear of him anymore.





There was some really cool artwork in the book, some by Blanche.










Here is the contents page, well laid out to be fair and quite comprehensive, it covered everything from assault cannons to exo armor






The now infamous 2nd ed Virus grenade. It was a true Ork killer. There was also a set of cards called wargear cards which were basically special events and one was called Virus outbreak. It effectively could wipe an Ork army in turn 1!






It also had some cool battlescapes to get you inspired. My friend hadnt got that many models so he used to literally take these pics and roll out the possible outcomes using dice.






I wont upload anymore pics as Im unsure of Dakkas copyright policy and we all know what Gw be like. But if the mods are ok I'll post a few more next week and maybe some from the other books in the box.

I didnt make it over to my mates house to get Heroquest but I did root out these guys. They were empty however, not even a single Orc inside

Return of the Witch Lord had by far the most evocative cover artwork in the expansions. Absolutely great stuff.



I do recall though, that it wasnt the best expansion, it was a bit boring and empty from what I recall and the end fight wasnt great



Even back then skulls were all the rage.....



I also rooted out these guys who were hiding under my bed. Genestealer cultist with heavy weapon, Genestealer from Space Hulk 1st ed and two Genestealer cultist Magos.



Ok, some of the sculpts definitely have improved



And we end with a fallen but not forgotten warrior (tank those 7ed wounds kiddo!).

I think the pirate guy might be actual lead. I remember when cleaning flash off him how soft he was. This was years after most actual lead minis were off the market, so it was quite the shock how much the file took off in one swipe.

Marine scouts? Those are Christmas marines and old pre-kirby knock-offs.

On old marines and dreads and tanks, that was the norm, marines had still a voice then

Those Tinboyz were fun, the Paul Bonner ork era

My oldest models are probably these old metal Scouts. I love them, they're far better than the plastic kit. I have around 7 of the Snipers, a Heavy Bolter, a Missile launcher, 4 with boltguns 3 with shotguns and one Sgt with chainsword. I run a big squad of 8+ snipers lead by Telion, and MSU's of 5 man Scout squads.



Also have Gaunt's Ghosts, minus the plasma gunner.

Oh man, I always loved the Bloodthirster Gargoyle that came with Hero Quest.

My oldest 40K model is the Guardian on the right with the sword(not my pic):


However, my oldest GW model is a couple of the old metal Skink archers.

Edit: Technically, I have a fairly sizable amount of RT and WHFB 3rd models, but I bought them off the internet during the late 90's and early 2000's, so I was only counting those I'd bought new first hand.

We have one of those and the patriarch on a throne. We bought almost all the RT terminators when I was young as they all had rules in Space Hulk. I sold a lot of stuff off over the years but a few things I kept were particularly nice. Somewhere at home there are about 40 all different metal RT marines.

I fielded them as a small unit of nobs with eavy armor, cybork bodies, shootas, and power klaws! I have to re-work how to field them under the new codex a bit, but my Bad Moons will always have a unit of tinboyz to mock their enemies! Hmmm... maybe deploy them inside the Morkanaut like little robot protectors?

Oh boy. This thread might give me a reason to actually pull out my armies again. They are mostly 1st and 2nd Edition models for Orks and Eldar.

On my list of things to do is get pictures up of all my old stuff. I do little retrospectives in my blog from time to time (and one more), but the odds and ends tend to be forgotten. Like the orks I posted upthread. This thread gives me some motivation to drag the camera out and dust off some fossils. I know I live re-visiting my old stuff, and it’s fun to see what’s hiding in the other dark, dusty corners of Dakka’s collective shelves.

Some of my old IG stuff. The guy with a bolter and a cigar remains one of my favorite sculpts to this day. Pretty fond of the medic next to him as well.

Ah, those pictures from the wargear book! The blood angels the colour of Heinz cream of tomato soup, trudging through forests of polystyrene and card trees (back when you made hobby stuff rather than just buying it) are what got me into 40k back in the 90s.

I also will always love the old 'screamer killer' carnifex

Thank you very much for posting that picture! I have those miniatures still but mine are mostly unpainted or poorly painted. I'm pretty sure they were made in the early 80s because I know I bought those box sets when I was in high school at that time.

I think I'll pull mine out and paint it up.

I’ve got more, both poorly painted and raw lead. These were just handy for a photo shoot. I have a number of the old boxes myself, plus a half filled shoebox of minis from that era that I got 3rd hand somewhere along the line. It would be interesting to see how some of these old guys would do with a modern, more skilled, paintjob. While I might not be all that and a bag of chips, my painting these days is just a little better then it was back in the day. That, or I can afford better brushes and more then the starter set of 8 paints.

Heres the contents pages. 54 pages which isnt a huge amount to be honest but a good variety of games covered and the Blood Bowl tactics and Warhammer artilliary were good.

5 WG still expensive enough, circa 20 sterling. But over here in Ireland we had a nasty exchange rate then so who knows how much!

Isn't that the original ghazghkull design on the warboss on the cover?

Historical markings time! From left to right, We have a veteran sergeant, a regular sarge, a normal veteran, and a normal trooper. The hazard stripe look was the hallmark of vets back in the day, while the parallel lines in a secondary color set the sarge apart from the squad.



Officers had their own system (and an alt for sergeants)

Needs more Epic.
The Space Marine Ork vehicles are some of the best named

WD175. Not the oldest issue I own, but I think the first I bought.

#95 was the first I ever bought.

Thanks for showing off your old minis everyone. In a lot of cases I actually prefer them to the newer ones, especially the Orks and Chaos ones. They just seemed to fit what they were back in the day.

I am running out of Go Fasta Red though and I don't think they make an equivalent to it now

No.


After WD he was the design studio manager for a few years.

Then he was involved in the (aborted) Warhammer Online with Climax studios.

The he was the Warhammer World general manager and quite key in a lot of areas there, especially Bugmans and the like.

The he was head of GW Spain for a few years, before heading back.

Then.... think we're talking a round 2011/12 he did another project or two for Gw before leaving, now he's a managament coach/trainer kind of thing -- outside expert.

Did a MBA -- business something or other ..? -- sometime as well.

Met him once or twice over the years, always very cool

Original LRs and paint the theme for the week?

As I’ve already posted my half melted LR in this thread, I’ll go for something related:

The transfer sheet that came in the box (do those things go stale?) All in blue. I assume the idea was you put them on your mini and then painted over them. I never did.

I had all the combat cards, there were six sets in the original run. They did some more around 3rd edition 40k.

People seem to slate them as a poor product, but I loved getting to see all the photos of the different figures.

Gotta agree with you on that, thought the glistening green ones were when i first started and was painting right outta the pot so they always ended up with a ring of dried paint messing up the seal...

I present to thee: Heroquest.



I must have been about 10 when I got this, I know for a fact I was playing it around 1990 and probably a year or two before that which would add up.
I started with the original game set but it became like an absolute religion and I ended up with Kellars Keep, Witch Lord and return of the Ogre Horde along with the adventure kit design set.
I never got Frozen Throne, or Morcars (?) expansion though :(



Here our trusty adventurers battle through a loot filled dungeon - The Barbarian, Wizard, Elf and Dwarf



The Horrific Gargoyle and Chaos Sorcerer await them (The Gargs wings broke Im afraid but I still have them in the box. Looks a bit like Khorne dosent he? )



Some artwork from the manual. Milton Bradley actually developed this in conjunction with GW. They are only credited from what I can see on the back of the manual.
Advanced Heroquest though was much more akin to the Warhammer world we have now.







The dice. 50% chance to cause a wound (3 skulls), 33% for a hero to defend (two white shields) and 16% for a monster (black shield). You also used standard d6s to move around the board.

Character development sheets, stickers for use in the dungeon design kit and a homebrew mission I made when I was 10. So cute.







Spell and equipment decks + the character sheets. The mechanic for spells was funny, the Wizard could take up to 3 full decks but once he cast a spell it was used for the game, so you had to be situationally tactical. The Elf player always got left with the dregs







Monster cards



Two basic missions from the original game. The teleporting idea was fantastic. The rule set was so simple it allowed for you to create much crazier and interesting scenarios. Genius stuff.





An undead quarter



The ogre quarter, the little bits of scnery were absolutely brilliant touches and you could easily make quests/objectives around them.



Probably my favourite game of all time. Hope you enjoyed seeing it again.

I've accumulated a reasonable amount of stuff over the years, can't be too fussy on the quality, I'm always prepared to strip paint off old figures. I also have a Tyrus and Eisenhorn painted at home, and two Kroot variants being stripped, and some other bits put away else where. I'm currently working on a DKoK conversion in 54mm.

I thought I had a decent knowledge of most of GWs indie games from back in the day.
However I was up in my friends last week and he pulled out this gem which through me for a loop.



Does anyone remember it? Supposedly it was the precursor game to Battlefield Gothic.

The ships were very strange, almost hybrid in their nature and there were loads of tokens and counters to use





To hit you rolled in the lid of the box, which I simply couldnt get my head around



We didnt get to try out a game unfortunately as we were knee deep in Heroquest but hopefully next time.

This and a game called 'Kerrunch!', which was a watered down version of Blood Bowl, both shared the same odd mechanic of flinging dice into the box lid.

Can't comment as to its efficacy in Space Fleet as I never played that but it seemed to be a novel enough idea in Kerrunch! Horribly random, of course, but I remember the game being a laugh to play for the eleven year old me. Of course, more discerning gamers would much prefer properly developed mechanics but I think Kerrrunch! was designed as a gateway game into Blood Bowl so was deliberately dumbed down for younger audiences.

There are a couple of extras in white dwarf to support Space Fleet, but it wasn't a game I had. I did have Kerrunch and Space Marine, a simplified version of space hulk. Each player had a team of space marine scouts that would fight each other to recover alien artefacts from the Hulk. There were event cards and things to play, it was quite fun but didn't make sense from a fluff perspective.

The 'roll the dice in the box lid' mechanic was rather random and suffered from the problem that the boxes tend to get a little crushed and dented in storage which means they aren't flat and the dice always roll into the corners which are a miss.

I didnt make it to my friends to get pics of his ancient stuff so decided to go through each of my 5 armies and photograph the oldest model from each.

These guys are the earliest 40k models I ever bought. They were sold in a now closed Virgin Megastore in Dublin circa November 1993. I think they cost about 19.99 Irish Punts at the time.
Note the crazy weapon combos, power axe and chainsword? bolt pistol with a knife stuck on it? I had much worse but redid most of them during 2nd ed to make sure each of them had a parrying weapon (force opponent to reroll an attack dice in 2nd ed HTH).



I never collected Eldar when I started 40k, my friend did, so this is his old Maugen Ra. However Im fairly ceratin it was the first model I ever got from him (ended up buying all his Eldar a few years later).



I didnt have time to root out the old plastic Orks from the 2nd ed boxed set. They are my oldest but heres the second oldest Ork model I own. Emperor knows how/when/why I bought it - although the Pulsa in 2nd ed was utterly utterly broken



These were my very first Imp Guard purchases. Old metal Mordian Command Squad. Still great models to this day, very characterful and detailed.



And finally some of Hissys, old crew. These are from Space Crusade (I think!).

Hey, it’s Friday again.

Last weekend one of the guys I was playing against was surprised by the heft of one of my old, metal minis. Which raised the question in my mind, “Can I field an all-metal army?” So I decided to grab all the old lead currently sporting an Ultramarine paint job and see what I had. Not pictured are some of the old hybrid kits, like the old (as in 3rd ed) devastators and the mostly plastic bikes w/half metal riders.



And to answer my own question, I can do a 1,000 point list easy. Footslogging primarily, but some DS and infiltration to help get around. Minis range in age from some old RT ones to the sternguard, which IIRC are from 5th.

I can't do all metal Marines, but I can do an all-metal Guard army.

To my shame, I no longer have my original egg Sentinels, but a benefit of being old is the ability to have collected a 2nd Ed all metal IG army!



Leaving out vehicles and the plastic heavy weapons with the Praetorians at the back, this is a small portion of the 450 odd figure army that I have spent the last 17 years wasting my money on/ having a grand time with.*

Even at the time it was normal, I thought foot IG armies were the work of the mad. So many troopers. Very nice looking though.

Recently, the ancient dead were brought to my mind, so I thought for this Friday I’d take the camera for a trip through my own old boneyard. I didn’t drag everything out for a photoshoot, but here is a sample:

Skull chucker. I was so irritated when I lost the ability to field these when the VC/TK split happened.


A pair of command elements. The rest of the block of skeletons would be plastic, but the guys in front were metal.


With the exception of a handful of metal ones scattered in with the plastic. These are some of the earliest GW minis I owned, originally bought as foes for D&D.


While I think of the Dogs of War as a new thing, most would consider them quite old. They did have a nice multi-culteral undead unit, so it’s not all human skeletons


Spirit Hosts? Nah, we just fielded blocks of ghosts.


Or wraiths. Nagash+8 wraiths w/standard and musician=1,500 point army, 9 models.


And if wraiths on foot weren’t bad enough, they could be mounted as characters. I found this guy on a trip once, covered in dust at the back of the rack. He was old at the time, and that was back in the 90’s.

It’s Friday again! Here is part two of my undead army. For reference, I played WHFB primarily in 5th edition, The one with the bretonian/lizardman starter box. This was back in the mid/late 90s. The primary theme of my army eventually coalesced into undead bretonians. Lead into battle by the dread Nevelon the Betrayer:

A mounted vampire lord, made for one of the campaign packs, could be fielded as a named character, the Red Duke. This was before the bloodlines stuff.

With some extra help from mounted heroes:



Centaurs used to be a thing. They were a unit in the chaos book, with some very old minis (which I never had) I did kit bash a number for both my undead and chaos armies. Particularly proud of the wight one. The mounted wraith is based on a DE darkrider, with his face dremeled out and a homemade scythe. He drinks a lot less the the one from last week. And before mummies got all uppity and stormed off to their own army book, they could be fielded as heroes. His job was to soak challenges so the vampire could blender units.


Mummies could also be fielded as blocks of troop. They were painfully slow, but crazy tough. Carrion were another thing (besides the skullchuckers) I missed when the split happened. They murdered solo wizards and artillery crews. Giant bats just weren’t the same.


And some necromancers and vampires on foot. The necros hold up well compared to modern sculpts, IMHO. Isabella and Vlad on the other hand, not so much.

Unfortunately, due to a huge sell off 10 years ago, I no longer have much in the way of my original stuff, some as early as '92. Something that I regret.
But I have some left and, along with some re-buys, means I've got some stuff I can share. I repainted these a little while ago:

I remember getting a scout bike, and a few years later, I looked for it and could not find it. I then wrote it off that I got angry and destroyed it, but I would never destroy a GW mini today.

It’s friday, time to grab the cameras and featherdusters! Today I hit the chaos shelf.

Remember when dragon ogres were just large, not comically huge?


I love multi-pose plastics. They let you have a lot of different poses in your army, rather then just the same 4-8 guys over and over again. But single sculpts just have so much more flavor.

And some HQs. Yes, that's a DE sorceress; might be Morathi. One of the themes in my WoC army was "when Dark Elves go too far”. I’ve got some mounted marauders made with old dark riders, and a group of “when witch elves go bad” made from howling banshees. But I’ll save them for later.

This week’s installment has a bit of conversion work done, but still mostly the old minis they are based on.

Those elder Chaos players who have not yet degenerated into gibbering spawn a/o been elevated to demonhood might recall the old retinue rules for constructing a chaos army. You took a character, and then needed to make them a warband of troops equal to their points. Continue adding these until you reached the point limit. Irritating mechanically, but could lead to some nice fluffy lists. As I mentioned last week, one of the themes in my old chaos army was “when witch elves go bad”. Elves/Eldar and Slannesh, they go so well together. I could have gone with khorne, but screw the psychology rules.


Simple weapon swap, the death boomerang for a big ol’ axe. Suddenly the queen of 80’s hair is cutting a swath through the old world.


With her girls backing her up. They didn’t make chaos warriors with additional handweapons at the time, so I cut off pistols and rattled around my bits box for things to stab with.


Some alternate characters, on old steeds of slannesh. I’m not fond of the boob-snakes/giant slugs things they’ve turned into. The banshee riding side-saddle is a newer sculpt then the ones making up the block of troops. They were in the process of re-sculpting the aspects warriors at the time, some were OK (like the banshees) others not so much (scorpions). It’s worth noting that the guns I cut off the troops were laspistols, which was one of the reasons the like was getting updated. HE dragonknight there on the right, just so you don’t think it’s all about the ladies.


GW didn’t make a chimaera at the time. This one was made by harlequin miniatures. The only reason I know that is I kept the box, which still had the $19.99 price tag on it. Nurgle was my god of choice when I wasn’t serving Slannesh. +1T was alway fun. And converting stuff to the lord of decay was not a hard thing to do for someone with just basic skills.

GW used to make a Chimera.

I had one I bought in 1984.

IIRC (and it was a while ago) the one GW made was not even remotely the right scale for a monster in WHFB. It fit on a calvary base, and had been OOP for years. My time in fantasy was the mid 90’s, while my 40k time started in the late 80s. But any information about a GW chimera was rumors/myths/legends.

I seem to recall that chimera was on one of the Combat Cards they did around 1990. I had all the sets as it was nice to see the painted miniatures.



I'm a bit late for friday, so here's my contribution, 3rd edition Fantasy. I bought it seond hand for £3 back in the day, and played this until upgrading to 5th edition. What was great was that you got all the rules for the armies in the back so the book really was a complete game. But they hadn't worked out distinct armies or the concept of allies, so in D&D style, all races were described in terms of lawful, good, neutral, evil and chaotic, IIRC. And an army could be made up of things that ally with something that is only one place up or down the scale. So evil things can't ally with things in the same army as good.

There were rules for wacky things like giant snails as a mount but only able to more 2" per turn making them the slowest cavalry and the magic was a lot more laborious. I will always remember the game where we played a siege and the giant uprooted a tree from the terrain and thrashed a castle wall until it fell down. It took so long that the snail riders managed to reach the castle wall and slime up the side of it to begin their prolonged assault.



The colour sections are pretty limited and there's a lot of rules text throughout so isn't especially interesting to photograph. But here's a good spread showing some of the models of the time. The picture on the bottom left accurately shows what a fantasy game looked like in practice. In the background of the bottom right picture is a large flesh coloured figure being used as a giant. I have a couple of these and they were troll in part of an early 54mm scale range of polythene figures that citadel did under the 'Fighting Fantasy' logo, the packets came with a skull shaped blister and figures came with interchangeable weapons and even heads.

That vampire model isn't Vlad. It's just a generic vampire lord.

That is the one I am thinking of.

They had an earlier one, sculpted by either Bryan Ansell, or one of the Partha Sculptors working for Citadel (Meier and Mize both did some work for Citadel).

But the earlier one was even smaller (goat/panther sized).

Damn I miss that guy (both of them).

I loved Epic, one of the things that pushed me into the Games Workshop hobby.. They changed the rules set and killed the game... I fear 9th edition Warhammer will be a repeat of this.

Another Flashback for me, with the Harlequin codex coming out, how back in early editions it was normal for new players to pick up the red book compendium and the Harlequin box set and have an complete army cheap.. Seemed like back in the day every other army in the St Louis area was Harlequin. One campaign we played was jokingly called "The Great Harlequin Slaughter of 90"

I've dug out a few old posters on a visit to my parents this week. First is one given out when they released Gorkamorka, mostly it's just artwork and photos that would appear in the rulebooks. Nice at the time though.



This is some 'eavy metal poster, lots of nice old miniatures painted up. I've no idea where this came from.



Last isn't really GW but a spin off from Fighting Fantasy where you'd call up to have an adventure. I've no idea if this ever caught on. Maybe someone here did it at the time?

It wasnt until 2nd ed that you could get more Tyranid wise than some metal Gaunts, plastic warriors, plastic genestealersm, the classic 4 claw Carnifex, Zoats and squigs (which at that point were sort of lumped in with Nids and Orks at the same time IIRC). Of course there were the various Genestealer cult figures but the connection between the two was less clear cut (and/or even thought through) at that point. I may have forgotten some.

Almost a decade.... Maybe over a decade, if we are not counting Space Hulk.

I had so many of those Termegants (although we wouldn't find out they were called that for that decade).

I remember being in Nottingham, talking to one of the Ric(k)s about the Tyranids, and getting an explanation of where the ammo for their guns comes from.

See... Their guns are living things, which have to be fed in order for them to have the materials to shoot at their enemies.

And it would be inconvenient to have wastes that needed to be cleaned out of their weapons. Soooooooo....

They also showed me a Tyranid Dreadnaught, which ate everything it encountered, and used it for fuel to create everygy blasts to destroy, or disable things at a distance, which it would then go eat....

I don't know how the current Tyranids work (the last I knew about Tyranids was that Space Hulk drove an expansion of them).

We did once use my Termegants in a game of Space Hulk after the additional rules and units came out (after everyone and their dog asked "We the hell don't the SMs in front drop to their knees, or the ones in back shoot over or around the ones in front?").

I don't think the SMs ever won a game of SH we ever played until those new rules and units came out.

Welcome to getting old. Every Sunday I listen to a reto-rewind show on the radio. I’m shocked and astounded but the “new” stuff they play sometimes. But it’s 2015; anything made in year starting in “19” is ancient history to some folks.

When I came back to 40k, that box was all I had left of the RT/2nd models I sold off.
There were only half the Termies in there, but a couple of librarians and PA sergeants too.

Quite a collection of old stuff you have there bbb.

I have two main armies for WHFB, Chaos and Undead. But they are not the only ones cluttering up the shelf. I also picked up a number of DoW units and a small force of Wood Elves I intended to work up into a full army. Never really got them to a playable point, but some got paint. I think I have a dozen dryads in a box somewhere unpainted.

Waywatchers. These were the cool looking minis that drew me to the army.


Some glade guard. At one point they were the best light calvary in the game. Fast, flexible, and they hit pretty hard.


Warhawk riders. I had a thought of everything being on the wing or made of wood. Odd concept, might have worked.


High Five!


Every time I move this guy I expect him to shatter into a thousand pieces. Barring the base and the wings, he’s metal. Long, sinuous, poorly balanced metal. With tiny connection points.

I have owned nearly everything in this thread at some point. I have virtually nothing left though. I do have nearly 3000 points of 2nd ed guardsmen, most Catachans but also Ogryns, ratlings and various Commissars, Priests and Psykers.

Its a shame that 40K is no where near the game that it used to be.

Some Dogs of War for your Friday viewing pleasure. Somewhere in a box in the back of my paint bench there is the rest of the pikemen and dwarf slayer/pirates waiting for paint. Always waiting. Borgio the besieger and Ms. Belladonna saw a lot of use in my chaos a/o undead armies as a chaos hero/vampire and sorceress respectively. Don’t think I actually fielded the galloper gun. Fun collection of models though.

The girl is definitely infocus as is the guy to her right. Just lacking a full depth of field in the shot I think. What camera is it?

Miss Necromunda i really wish they would do a special edition of it with a rules update so it's not as fiddly as the old game.

Was talking in my local GW recently looking at newer Skaven models much better than the old ones i had in my early teens when i played WFB and they have plenty of possibilities for weapons and poses. Recall having a ton of these guys. They came in boxes that cost £5 at the time i think you got maybe 6 in a box. Same pose and you only glue a shield on if you want it there and that's all. If anything at least the model quality and options got better XD.

Canon Powershot S95. Learning to take better pictures is constantly on my things-to-do list. It doesn’t help that this was a
"Hey it’s Friday, I should grab a picture” rather then a formal photoshoot.

I think most of the armies at the time had the one box of mono-pose plastic to help fill out your army. I was lucky as an Undead player that our filler box was multi-part posable plastics. But most armies had a front row of metal, and then a block of the same guy filling up the ranks. Or for those units that were different enough that you couldn’t use the plastic, a wallet breaking wall of lead.

I think the mono-pose plastics were ported over from the Talisman boardgame.

The Chaos codex was a truly great tome. The stories of the legions and primarchs, the 'eavy metal section that was rammed full of conversions, bonkers rules and then cultists thrown in because they felt like it. I'm feeling a bit sad that we'll never see its like again.

Given that is was a WD giveaway I'm not sure how I managed to get multiple copies.

The original Assassins for 2nd edition was a £5 codex. The much thinner one for 3rd was a WD freebie.

When 2nd went out I got a few codicies cheap, Assassins for £1 and Sisters for £2. Sisters stuff was cheap, when GW actually did sales the bins were often full of the SoB special characters like Kyrinov.

Some of my old stuff is for projects I never got around to, like the steed of slanesh and the wraithguard. But a bulk of my old blisters are from when an old FLGS went out of business. The dusty junk from the back of the shelves that was going to be too much effort to try to move was given away. Got a big box myself.

Mostly Clan Wars, but a large assortment of old, dead games and companies. Actually, looking at those Warzone guys, they’d make halfway decent SM scouts with a little work...

When I started in the mid-90s I remember you could get a blister of two metal models for around $6.

I keep meaing to dig out some of my boxes every time i read this thread.

Some models were still 25 pence a go when I started out many moons ago.
Those Plague Marines to me are "new" models. I remember when there was A plague marine and that was your lot. Also when all this was fields, kids were polite back then, arent police men looking young these days....*incoherent rambling*

Figures used to be 95¢ a piece in the 1980's. I remember when Ral Partha figures jumped from $5.95 for a blister of six models to $7.95 and then $9.95 (but by then I no longer had to buy miniatures, which was a relief).

You can even do things like apply a glow from an energy sword by adding a colored light to the scene and then baking it into the texture.

People who are just starting out miniature painting now in their teens will have a completely new world waiting for them in their 20's in the 20's.

Eldar support platforms. They’ve come a long way.


You didn’t used to get them in plastic with a guardian squad. The red one on the left dates back to 3rd, IIRC, and the other guys are older, RT for both, might be wrong on that. Scatter laser, missile launcher, and either a lascannon or a distort cannon, not sure on the last. I’ve got a selection of metal guns for the “new” one, but they are not painted and look very close to the modern versions.

And then there are the guys pulling the triggers:

If those catachans are plastic, that should put them at 3rd.

Your Undead has stuff that I recognize as “new” but remember releasing, so that should put it in the 5th-6th edition range, or later. Are those metal zombies in red up front? Those and the skeleton horsemen are old. I see ghost swarms, which happened after the split into TK/VC. The “new” wights released sometime in the middle of when I was playing, I’d have to dig for a specific date. If you get some better shots we could try to narrow it down.

Now I need to find something to add to this thread myself.

He has already been dis-armed once, that’s why he always caries a backup knife.

I can, at the very least, spot the Imperial Firebase, a bridge from Necromunda, and the Eldar... thing... that came in the cardboard section of White Dwarf.

Spend enough time eating warpstone, next thing you know you don’t fit on your tiny little base anymore. Just ask Nagash.

As for the names/classes of my ships, I’d have to dig out the rulebook and look. I know the big guy is a battleship with the mark of nurgle, done with some greenstuff and a few spare nurglings.

It is the Terminus Est - I have the same model myself.

Here's one of my two ancient beaky Space Marines. Love the detail on these old models, obviously a completely different style to the latest stuff, but great none the less.

OK, looking at the pics, It’s not the Terminus Est, but just a Despoiler class battleship with the mark of nurgle. I didn’t realize they made a custom nurgle ship; I just marked up a basic one. Close ups show a lack of the sculpted mark on the prow, or the spine along the top.




I could see how they could be confused from the blurry long shots.

I miss BFG. I already had Imperial, Space Marine, and Necron fleets (and my Ramilies). And then I went a little crazy during the great Specialist Games Sell Off and bought Eldar, Chaos, and AdMech fleets. I could probably sell it all on Ebay and get back about 3 times what I paid for it.

The correct answers is yes, i bought the box with 3 rhinos and a box with 2 landraiders very cheaply i remember buying and eldar complete squad of 12 metal miniatures for 18 Dutch guilders or around 9 euro's now. The most boxed sets were 54 guilders the for 36 plastic orks or 8 metal terminators

BFG was not the only miniatures game to bring war to the inky depths of space. Silent Death, from I.C.E. was another quite good one. While it is more geared for fighter combat, it handled large fights well, and did include rules for capital ships. Here are some of them:


I’d drag out the swarms of fighters for a photoshoot, but they are packed away better then the big guys. Maybe next week.

Some of the new sculpted banners look awesome. No need for pesky freehand work. But GW used to offer another option: Sticker banners. Some were free with box sets, others were purchased separately (the chaos ones below were IIRC) While most of my Ultramarine ones are in use, here are some extras I have cluttering up the place:

It's a D-cannon or "Distort cannon" (it had both names). The lascannon was different and used the same mount as the missile and scatter laser. the D-cannon and mount were different again.

Thinking I may go through some of my early eBay feedback and grovel to any buyers still registered "Err, you don't know me, but about 15 years ago I sold you some painted models..." I think some may have even been sold some off on Bartertown, pre-forum days. Chances are the models have been binned, stripped or stored, long forgotten.
