Kotar Luchtaine welcomes you to Ghalmek.

The Dark Council rules the Legion, but within these factories and tankyards, the Warpsmith is the supreme authority. His words are backed with biological weapons:

Infected with the Obliterator Virus after an exchange of knowledge and resources with the brother rebels of the Iron Warriors, and now blessed by Grandfather Nurgle, Kotar's bodyguard are renowned for their ability to rapidly sacrifice captives en masse to keep the production lines running. They feel an affinity with Namtar, though they only find his company in battle as at all other times he is kept restrained in the catacombs for everyone's safety:

Kotar's foundry has been tasked by the Dark Council with preparing an armoury capable of topping the greatest monuments built to the False Emperor, and of ensuring the success of any movement inspired by the Horus Rebellion. Reports on Kotar's progress will be made herein.

...So. Army approach:

- Lots of Cultists slaving in Kotar's foundries.

- Every Daemonic Marine unit for every God; Mortals don't get specific Marks.

- Lots of vehicle formations to bring down any place of worship or fortification.

- Heresy-era stuff galore.

- All Mortals to get Veterans of the Long War, except for a full size squad of Marines led by Fabius Bile (on retainer to assist with troop replenishment).

- Daemon units to be bought for summoning by Sorcerers, rather than as Allies. I like the dynamic flexibility of Daemonology

- Armies on Parade boards in the form of a Tank Yard and a Chaos Cathedral.

Excellent paintwork and conversions, and the Warpsmith is amazing, especially the axe!

Painting techniques used (will be updated as new techniques appear)

Undercoat: Black.

Red armour: Mechrite Mephiston Red basecoat, Nuln Oil wash, Mechrite Mephiston Red basecoat, edge highlight with Skull White, Blood Red edge tint, Blood Red drybrush layered glazes.

Metallic armour: Chainmail basecoat, Nuln Oil wash, Chainmail highlight, Mithril Silver edging Mithril Silver, two coats, then layer Nuln Oil to shade.

Corrupted flesh: Tallarn Flesh basecoat, highlight in successive mixes with Bleached Bone, Thraka Green wash, Baal Red wash, very thin highlight glaze made by 2:1 Tallarn Flesh - Bleached Bone.

Usually Bugman's Glow basecoat, highlighted in successive mixes with Screaming Skull, up to about 1:4 mix. Shaded with a 2:3:5 mix of Gryphonne Sepia, Biel-Tan Green, Lahmian Medium. Secondary wash substitutes green with Carroburg Crimson. Highlights reapplied where needed.

Glowing lenses: Skull White basecoat. Mix a very pale Lightning Bolt Blue and glaze lens and areas caught by the light.

Heatstained weapons: Boltgun Metal basecoat. Front half Mithril Silver. Along the circumference of where the two meet, a thin glaze of Daler-Rowney Process Magenta. Behind this, with a tiny overlap, a Gryphone Sepia glaze that fades towards the rear. To the front, Asurmen Blue (again, tiny overlap with the magenta). Edge highlight with Mithril Silver, or make sooty with Nuln Oil.

Blue tentacles: Adeptus Battlegrey, drybrushed Astronomican Grey, Asurmen Blue wash, final light Astronomican Grey dry brush.

Horns and claws: Scorched Brown basecoat, highlighted in smaller parallel elongated triangles in four steps up to pure Bleached Bone Screaming Skull, final Skull White highlight.

Teeth: Bestial Brown basecoat, layered from Snakebike Leather to Bleached Bone Screaming Skull via a 50/50 mix.

Hot metal: Skull White base coat. Gradually reverse-highlight from most recessed areas up to a bright cherry red, first adding Sunburst Yellow, then traces of Blood Red and minute amounts of Bestial Brown. Thin edging with Scorched Brown.

Daemonettes: basecoated Hormagaunt Purple (OOP), highlighted up to white, bone and hair basecoated Adeptus Battlegrey (OOP), highlighted up to Astronomican Grey (OOP), jewellery in Mithril Silver (OOP), all washed with Druchi Violet, and skin rehighlighted with very thin spot applications of the paler tones used prior to the shade. Asurmen Blue (OOP) used to tone the lower eyelids and cords, no lipstick or blush tones.

Bases: Adeptus Battlegrey, drybrushed up to Astronomican Grey. Metal detritus in Scorched Brown, lightly stippled with Ryza Rust, lightly edged with Mithril Silver. Mucky patches added with a drop of very dilute Scorched Brown put on a wet surface and allowed to disperse.

Legion icons: Sketched in place by 0.1mm technical pen, then freehanded.

Corrupted nails: as horns, with Gryphone Sepia glaze.

Thanks

I've detailed the painting technique used on the axe. The pose is modified from the standard; instead of the line of motion being along the shoulders as the axe is held aloft, I wanted Kotar to be standing firm and arrogantly, with the motion being in his mecha-tendrils. They were repositioned with hot water so as to be swarming in a flurry at a foe in the near distance, whom Kotar does not deem worthy of him raising his own weapons. The pistol is from Kharn the Betrayer.

Thanks

Current WIP's:

- Test run Cultists and Nurgle Mutilators (same conversion as the Obliterators) need sprucing up to match the scheme I've settled into.

- Slaaneshi Warp Talons are being painted up. Lovely, lovely models. But very time-consuming.

- Deimos Vindicator is being magnetised. I'm going to pick up some Heresy-era Iron Hands heads to use on vehicle crew, so as to visually distinguish Kotar's apprentices from the common soldiery.

Thanks, folks. Good to see you, @Gitsplitta - I've been inactive a few years and it's nice to see familiar names

Down to business:

Kotar's been busily gap-filling and magnetising up this carefully-conserved beauty: the Spirit Of M31. If you can shoot it off, it can be removed. The air vents are removable, as well - they make perfect little Hull Point markers

The commander can be removed when he's Shaken, and can shut the hatch when he's Stunned. When Immobilised, the Ram Bar gets taken off. No fiddly counters for book-keeping here

I'm going to get painting this up over the coming weeks. The Commander will have to wait until I pick up some Iron Hands heads - they're definitely going on all vehicle crew.

I'm so going to copy what you've done on the vindicator, but for hull points instead of the vents make additional armour plates from the spare rhino parts wreck them twisted and ruptured detachable plates.Add a bit of teddy bear stuffing pouring out, magnetise them and super cool. For the immobilisation spare tank treads make 'em look like they've spun a track.

HORUS WAS RIGHT - lindsay40k's Word Bearers / 2 SEPT - SHADOWSPEAR  @ 2014/10/20 02:13:21

Post by: lindsay40k

@e.earnshaw - Nice ideas, but I'm avoiding swapping and chaining where I can. My magnetised damage logging is going to be subtractive wherever possible.

Over the next few days, I'm going to be looking for light, hollow balls - ping pong and smaller - to use to make 'blooming' smoke. The idea is a dynamic smoke bomb in flight, with a Zelda aesthetic, that's going to be light enough to stay on for a turn and not have the shedding/matting problems of stuffing or cotton wool

.

I ordered a bunch of Devastator sgt fists especially for squadron commanders

I have to admit, I love how easy it is to find bits online these days. For a few years after mail order dropped the parts service, it was like the Dark Ages of converting, but now that you get so many spare parts it feels like a real thriving 'swap shop' scene (and of course, the resellers who save us buying a whole squad for a grav-gun)

Mini update: no progress to report, but a load of household DIY has opened up the space for six seven semi-permanent Armies on Display boards. I'm working out what I'm going to do, and so far narrowed down to:

Word Bearers Tank Yard

Undead Pirate Fleet

Tyranid Hive World

Night Goblin Village

Great War trenches

Ultramarines Polar Garrison

Space Hulk

Genesteela Kult settlement

I'll be blogging each separately, but thought I'd put my musings down here for now

Space for six display boards? Colour me jealous, it's hard enough finding space for 6 figures around here All sound great (except the ultras, 'coz you know...smurfs ), definitely pleased to see the 'steela kult on the list.

Oh, and christmas baubles for your smoke bombs? Should be appearing in pound shops near you right about now......

Warp Talons chosen by Slaanesh are at WIP80%: it's taken most of a month to get to this point and I'm thinking this is turning out to be the best looking unit I've ever made. I was going to wait until they were finished to post them, but I'm just too darned euphoric about them to hold back

I have to hand it to GW, they've really got their paint formulae spot-on. Sooo happy with the effects I can get with shades.

Ok, time to structure my initial additions with a 1750 army list.

Theme is a mechanised column that comes to the aid of a local chaos cult and teleports in support units, with one of each daemonic unit having caught the attention of a particular god. Goal is to collect an aesthetic force that stands a chance in casual games.

HQ: Warpsmith with Plasma Pistol, Veteran, Aura
^ leads v
Heavy: Three Tzeentch Obliterators
^ mounted in v
Elite: Land Raider Proteus with Multi-Melta

Heavy: Vindicator with Combi-bolter

Elite: Five Khorne Possessed in Rhino with Dirge Caster & Havoc Missile Launcher

Troops: 10 Chaos Cultists: Autoguns, shotgun, heavy stubber

Troops: 10 Chaos Cultists: Autoguns, shotgun, heavy stubber

Troops: 10 Chaos Cultists: Flamer

Elite: 2 Nurgle Mutilators

Fast attack: 5 Slaanesh Warp Talons

Helbrute Mayhem Pack: MM & PF, MM & Thunder Hammer, Autocannons & Missile Launcher

Probably scale up to 2K with a mechanised CSM unit escorting a Sorceror

I'm not going to say what should and shouldn't be taken as its a casual list but I want to point a few things out for you to think about.

Why are your long range obliterators going in a LR, they would be better off deep striking or sitting at the rear of the battlefield.

I'd swap the Vindicators combi bolter for a combi melta, it's going to nearly be in range by the time his cannon is.

Five possessed in a rhino isn't good you need more bodies you are at least going to loose one or even two from getting out the vehicle and then charging in the following turn.

Again same issue with the mutilators when they come in they wont be able to do anything the turn they arrive and will get shot to gak, unless you have more bodies or a lord with them. Or they arrive the same turn the mayhem pack does, then your going to be grinding those imperial scum into the ground

I hope that helps

HORUS WAS RIGHT - lindsay40k's Word Bearers / 2 SEPT - SHADOWSPEAR  @ 2014/12/18 19:49:53

Post by: lindsay40k

The Obliterators will dismount from the LR into a position where they can really apply pressure, with the Rhino hiding behind it. They should be getting to fire every turn, with the WS adding to their shots at close range, and the Possessed jumping out a stationary Rhino to charge anyone who gets close.

With +1 to reserves from the Proteus, the muties near guarantee something will DS in the enemy's face and force them to split fire.

The Deimos Vindicator comes with a great combi-bolter. It's there to protect the Demolisher from half of destroyed results.

It's a shame most daemonic marines are so expensive for what they do. Maybe drop some Cultists for some more?

HORUS WAS RIGHT - lindsay40k's Word Bearers / 2 SEPT - SHADOWSPEAR  @ 2014/12/18 20:02:21

Post by: GiraffeX

Not sure if you drop some cultists you're going to start to loose the theme of the army.

Do you know what sort of armies you're going to be playing?

To be honest I'd go with what you have as it will mean more to you forging the look and feel of the army, then if something doesn't work its a good excuse to buy and paint more minis. That's how my Dark Wolves army went from 2000 to 4000 points

HORUS WAS RIGHT - lindsay40k's Word Bearers / 2 SEPT - SHADOWSPEAR  @ 2015/01/19 20:37:44

Post by: combat engineer

I would pump up the Mutilators squad, then dump them in the Land Raider Protus. If you can sacrifice 95 points, dump in a Spartan to get more Obliterators or Mutilators up the table.

Five elites of Possessed and Warp Talons seems wasted. A round of shooting or overwatch could see them horribly mauled before you even reach the assault. I would suggest dropping one of these squads to beef up the other. I would go with possessed, but that's me.

Love the look of the army.

There's plenty of activity in the paint yard. Hordes of cultists are frantically applying coats to all manner of gribblies and elite warriors.

But what's this that Kotar is tinkering with in his personal workshop? And why is he advising the garrison to practice field skyshield pad erection?

He can be heard working all night, bitterly muttering about losing a painting contest to a Harlequin. 'They said I was mad! They said I wasn't quite as spectacular! Well, I'll show them!'

Not sure. I'm going to dry pin them before making any decisions.

At the very least, I plan to make a decent air force for myself, and it'd be nice to sell enough to raise funds to replace my dying bicycle. It'd probably be a good idea to make a few pieces that can be pressure-moulded.

Mazahim is a senior Daemonologist whose blade has sacrificed countless souls, ritually summoning warp entities to possess the war machines of Ghalmek.

Parts used: Dark Vengeance Librarian, Grey Knight Terminator book, Chaos Marauder sword, Raptor arms and pistol, Possessed shoulder pad, Beastman skull from Tomb Kings, Space Crusade CSM backpack.

To get the colours of aged paper, I mixed a little yellow into Bestial Brown. His cape is a simple Scorched Brown to Screaming Skull highlighting affair, with neither colour being used in its pure form - this keeps all the tones cohesive. His spectral Familiar was painted with Astronomical Grey, highlighted up to white, washed with Nihilakh Oxide, rehighlighted, and the horns knocked back with a thin wash of Nihilakh Oxide darkened with a dash of Thraka Green and Asurmen Blue.

I would do this with a blade that has a straight edge, but with all the spikes near the base there was just too much surface area for heat loss to go with it. The edge is still white hot between the spikey bits.

I've had a request for an explanation of how I did Mazahim's book.

Base colour is Bestial Brown with a touch of yellow. Increased amounts of Screaming Skull blended in, with the palest part in the centre. Find an old book to see the exact colours to aim for to get an authentic appearance of aged paper.

The writing with with a fine detail synthetic brush, with a blend of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown. Use a technical pencil to sketch in the illuminated letter and a few dots to indicate line spacing. The paint was highly diluted and applied in a few very light sweeps. Again, keep a damp cotton bud to hand to erase mistakes.

Same technique used for impurity seals.

Here we go!

A deadline came up: my local museum is going to run an exhibition of models, and my FLGS is contributing the fantasy & sci-fi section. Guess who they asked for a lend of some 40K baddies?

Notwithstanding that we're clearly the loyalists - to the Warmaster, of course - and it's the corpse-botherers who are obviously the villains, here's the newly finished troops soon to be put on parade:

Dentata, Helbrute

I was playing around with a second DV brute and my leftover Slaanesh chariot bitz. I was pleased at how well they aligned, and so was born Dentata - the perfectionist Havoc whose monolatrist heresy earned them a place in a Helbrute after wasting time aiming for perfect armour kills when a simple immobilisation was all that was required.

The geometric chaos star was inspired by Ottoman art.

Morblis, Helbrute

I picked up a Talos to make a Daemon Prince, and loved how perfectly the racks fit onto a Helbrute sarcophagus. Adding a couple of antique Dactylis arms (well done, those of you who spotted them) gave birth to Morblis, the death-obsessed Havoc who serves penance as a Helbrute for dedicating mass slaughter of exposed infantry to Nurgle when his orders were to lay down suppressing fire on key targets.

I referred to photographs of squid when painting the eyes.

Warp Talons of Slaanesh

All of my Daemonic units are getting a Mark. The spare head from my Slaaneshi chariot was a perfect match for the motion of the champion. Freehand Legion icons all round, I don't do transfers.

Minions

These gullible fools actually believe we'll help them attain Daemonhood. If any of them actually survive contact with the corpse-botherers, we'll give Fabius Bile a call and get them initiated.

I referred to several swatches on coolminiornot's ethnic skin tones painting guide. Really, diverse units should be a standard practice - it only take a few more minutes.

Can anyone see what else is unusual about them?

Beautiful helbrutes, great take on the kit. Having built a couple of my own now, I find it funny how much better posed the DV one is - my one complaint with the full kit is those damn boring legs. Why stand still and fire when you've got massive dreadnought armor to absorb the recoil? Stomp the line, big guys!

All the same, lovely stuff

Dakka featured my Warp Talons on the Book of Faces

I'm currently recovering from a back injury that's limiting my ability to sit up and paint. I've got a unit of Anointed (Terminators) led by a Sorcerer Lord that's well on its way to completion; hopefully I'll be able to get it done in time to join the museum collection before the exhibition winds up.

Hi Lindsay,

Nice to see more of your chaos than the raptors and terminators I've seen you paint in store (I'm the guy with the legion of the damned and squat inquisitor in the cabinet ).

The army looks great, would be fun to play against if you ever fancy a game.

See you around

Heya James,

With my sore back and the summer holidays I'll probably not be around until September. On the bright side, that'll be when my army's back from the parade ground and back in action

Cheers, Sinful. I reckon I might be able to sit up a while this week, maybe do some glueing.

Tried a new sculpting technique today. Carved a fin for this Helbrute from 1mm acrylic.

I'm going to use putty to build up more relief work at the base. The model's original spine is going on a Land Raider engine!

I got the idea for the Daemon Prince parts swap when digging through FLGS bits boxes. As for what inspired the posture...

Spoiler:

I hope the fin, and naming him Viktor, will serve as a subtle reference

Wee update for y'all

First up, Victor's had his legs filled out a bit and just needs a few bits tidying up and a basing:

Anyone got any recommendations on city basing articles? I'm really pleased with this mini and want to up my game from sand, drybrush and ink to do him justice.

Also, as you can imagine, we've been *cough* shopping in Calth:

This tank was crippled by Saint Angron during the Horus Rebellion. We retrieved it from the field of battle and welded a sheet of geometric chaos art to the hull, anointing each star created by the negative space with sacrificial blood to encourage daemonic infection. Each star will have a fleshy eye erupting through the armour, some of them crawling out like little Shuma-Goraths. Tyranid guns will replace the original weapons.

The squares that have been added to define the smaller stars are each going to bear a trophy spike. Four of them will instead have a magnet on which a trophy banner will sit as a HP marker. Giz a job, GW.

Sorcerer conversion: Terminator Lord, WFB - sorry, AoS - skeleton head, Berserker sword (PS gives FA +1A, Biomancy challenges ahoy), Chaos Marines Tzeentch head, sculpted right hand, Death Company purity seals.

Anointed: Chaos Terminators with Deathwing tabards, sculpted hoods, Raptor plasma pistols, Terminator Lord book, misc purity seals.

OK, gang, after the armour was painted I looked at this guy and decided a dark skintone was perfect for him. But it's tricky to make his smog mask's leather straps stand out. I'm not sure about the edge highlight; on paper, it's the way to go, but in practice I'm not sure. Anyone got any feedback & suggestions?

I think the highlight looks fine as is. If you wanted more depth to it you could build the highlight up from a darker grey to an almost-white spot at the crown, lots of work for a small bit of detail though. Alternatively I've experimented with using glazes on a single high contrast edge highlight with some success. You do the highlight then apply a thin glaze to almost the entire highlight but leave one high spot un-touched. Then once that dries apply a second coat this time sticking closer to where you want your highlights to be even more toned down. You can keep this process up to have the illusion of depth to your highlight values without actually having to use or blend multiple colours. It's not perfect but it's easy and not very time consuming.

The model looks great though, fantastic work.

Aaaand they're done! I took the suggestion - echoed in various places - to use tan colours on the leather straps, and I like the result. It matches my existing palette, as well.

A handy little utility unit that can hold an objective, be a nuisance with six S7 shots, and fit in a Rhino. A Power Axe means that if the Champion is compelled to Challenge an enemy sergeant, he's got a good chance of killing them if they don't do him in first.

Awesome green stuff work on the landraider, how are you going to paint the fleshier bits? same as the armour on the marines or something different.
The standard marines look great too, especially the banner bearer

I got my first battle in! This was my army list:

Chaos Sorcerer - Lv 3 Biomancy, Terminator, Spell Familiar, Power Sword, VOTLW

4 Terminators: Combi Melta, Lightning Claw, Power Fist, 3 Combi Plasma, VOTLW
- Land Raider: Daemonic, Dirge Caster

10 Cultists: Shotgun, Stubber, Autoguns

10 Marines: Autocannon, Plasma, Combi Plasma, Power Weapon, VOTLW

Nurgle Obliterator

5 Warp Talons: Slaaneshi, VOTLW

Helbrute Mayhem pack: 3 Helbrutes - Twin Flamerfists, Missiles & Reaper Autocannon, Twin Lascannon

Playing for Kill Points, and due to a miscount on my part I set my 1500 against 1750 of AM. Whoops! On turn one, a Grav Cannon Immobilised my Land Raider. Nooo! But it didn't, as daemonic forces conspired to bend the rules of physics. Bwahaha! It raced forward and the Terminators leapt out, emptied their Combi-Weapons into the Kataphron line, and got Endurance cast on them. They tanked a huge amount of firepower with their 2+, 5++ and 4+ FNP! Second turn, my Helbrutes failed to arrive (despite a re-roll from my Warlord), and the Terminators & Warp Talons killed everyone within reach. My LR took the Str10 weapon off a Dunecrawler, reducing it to a desperate charge (that my Sorcerer evaded then pulled apart with Iron Arm). Turn 3 the Helbrutes arrive and cause a little damage... an error of judgement meant I exposed the rear armour of Victor to a lot of Str 4 Rapid Fire. He got Wrecked. The store was soon to close and we had to wind up, so on a 4KP draw my Sorcerer charged his general. But his casting rolls were off, and I forgot about Spell Familiar, and he got killed by a Power Axe whilst failing to do enough to finish off his opponent. 6-4 loss this time :(

On the bright side, we have some Khornate Possessed ready to run amok:

And, wouldn't you know it, there's a Formation that makes them real tasty as well. Bonus!

I excavated material from the underside and inserted four magnets - a big one to bear the weight and three small ones to stabilise. I smoothed off the surface and then let four complimentary magnets sit on them. Green stuff sausages 3mm wide were made into a square and the corners squished onto them. When this had cured, I pressed a lump of GS onto it and inserted some paperclip rods to hold it in shape when the craft is not mounted (the magnets pulled together and distorted the first attempt - this all took a lot of trial & error and I didn't bother recording the process as I'd rather keep my iPhone away from neodymium .

Once a solid mount has been cured, it was attached to the top of a flying stand (the four magnets were spaced with this in mind) by putting a thin layer of fresh GS over the join on magnet block, and then pressing this into a coating of superglue on the flying stand. More GS was added to go over the sides and really secure it in place.

I plan to expend my air force and will make a blog of this process once it's down pat

Yeah, the HB is actually a pre-Citadel flying stand model, and you get a generic... lump of resin with a stand slot in it to somehow attach to the model. It's a really clumsy solution, but FW's only alternative would be to commission a stand slot attachment for every existing kit. The only issues I've had with my solution is the time & effort factor, and the fact that the strongest magnet holds so tight that even my Humbrol varnish doesn't prevent paint scratching. Still, worth it

Right, brothers and sisters of the Word, I've picked up a Favoured of Chaos set. I'm a fan of the Possessed models (though they need kitbashing to really shine), and I'll be picking up another and also another pair of Daemon Princes. Plan is to have a Nurgle Prince buzzing along over a convoy of mechanised Possessed, causing merry hell, whilst the other three Princes will be kept aside for Allied Detachments (to enable FA choices of a single Flyer) or Lords of the Black Crusade.

Now, what to give them? Here's what I've thought about...

Daemon Prince of Nurgle: Lv 3 Malefic Daemonology, Spell Familiar, Wings, Power Armour, Burning Brand of Skalanthrax

If he gets Cursed Earth, the Possessed and their Rhinos get 4++. (3++ on the Tzeentch marked unit - they're facing up against the Plasma/Grav gunlines.) Infernal Gaze and Dark Flame have ok synergy with being a gunship. Summoning more Daemons adds to the horror - especially handy for making a Plaguebearer unit to tank for the Possessed on the turn they dismount.

Daemon Prince of Khorne: Power Armour, Wings, Axe of Blind Fury

Hulk smash! I was pondering on making one of them a foot model (I do like the original FC DP), but if you're going to pay 200pts for a MC it's a terrible idea to make it walk up to the enemy's gunlines to save 40pts (especially with how much Grav there is nowadays).

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh: Lv 3 Biomancy, Spell Familiar, Wings, Black Mace

Who cares about armour when in almost every game they’ll get solid buff and/or regeneration powers?

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch: Lv 3 Telepathy, Spell Familiar, Power Armour, Wings

If Shrouding comes up then shooting her down will be a big priority, so she gets a buff against massed Autocannon and Flakk Missiles. I'm thinking instead of wings, this model will be levitating in a trance.

In big games I’ll take all three, and then the fun starts. Hulk serves as Distraction Carnifex. At least one of Shrouding or Invisibility or Endurance should come up. Psychic Shriek has alright synergy with Terrify, but adding a trio of Helldrakes for more Ld debuffs (and Vehemence Attack Pattern - like having four lascannons each!) makes it downright horrific. Doubly so if Shrouding comes up - 2++ Jinks all round, thank you!

I'm not sure how to make the Nurgle one. I'm happy with the plastic DP kit for the other three, but the FC guy is a great model and easily modified to fly. I'm not a fan of Bayformers, but I'm thinking of Optimus Prime's flight pack made to look like it mutated from a Warp Talon...

So, how about that Traitors Hate and Legions, eh?

Now that I've got my air superiority established, time to fill the skies. And with a faction that specialises in notoriously overcosted Possessed, I'm going to need something really annoying. Enter a flying Nurgle Prince, escorting 3-5 Possessed units in Rhinos, casting Malefic spells to support them. As long as he's alive (with Shrouded Jinking, should be solid), he has a bubble that basically gives them a pair of I5 Lightning Claws. In 2/3 games he'll give the Tzeentch-marked brethren a 3++. Tasty!

I've always liked the Nurgle Prince model and I scooped one up. He's been reposed all dynamic like, and over the past few days I've been making a jetpack for him:

After pinning some tubes in place to position the boosters, I built him a pair of stabilisers. After much doodling I settled on a Warp Talon-inspired design that recalls a mark of Nurgle and leaves room for freehand Legion iconography. His tabard was repositioned with a hot air gun - trickier to time than boiling water, but much less mess.

I made some intakes and put fangs around them, and made some exhausts. To guide my sculpting, I cut out some long thin wedges and glued them along the sides. It then occurred to me to record the progress in shorter intervals

Sculpted detail around the intakes. I used calipers to make sure their diameters matched up.Filled in the gaps between the wedges.

First time modelling an identical pair of regular geometric objects. Applied the GS warm & soft then worked it when it had cooled and stiffened a bit. Mostly used stroking actions and the calipers again, looking down the length to see for bumps. When it had cured, smoothed them with emery boards and carved the exhaust parts with a scalpel. 0.5mm steel rulers rule! Used a technical drawing pen to plan out next steps, referring to Warp Talon jump packs as an example.

More to follow! My army is currently on parade, hopefully get photos of them on display in a week or two.

Jet pack beginning to take shape now. If you want to mount magnets as studs, seal their sides to the surface with a layer of superglue and make the holes slightly bevelled to accommodate, or you'll have them snapping off.

Been having some fun 1K kill points games at my local GW, but I fancy a change from the LR Terminators and trying to fit two Troops in next to them. Considering this:

Raptor Talon
Chaos Lord, Jump Pack, Murder Sword, Dark Glory, VOTLW
5 Warp Talons: Khornate, VOTLW
5 Warp Talons: Slaaneshi, VOTLW
5 Raptors: 2 Melta, Combi Melta, Power Fist, VOTLW
^ this detachment makes disordered charges on deep strike

Allied Detachment
Sorcerer: lv 3 Malefic Daemonology, Dark Glory, Spell Familiar, VOTLW
20 Cultists: Shotgun, Stubber, Flamer, 8 Autoguns
Hell Blade: Helstorm Autocannon
^ a Hell Blade is a flying Land Speeder that has six TL rending Autocannon shots and excels at Dogfighting

The Sorcerer and Cultists stay safe and summon Daemons (+1 to rolls) appropriate to the enemy, the paratroopers jump in and take out key targets, the Hell Blade plays air superiority and picks on units with a key specialist hiding at the back.

I'm converting Valkia into my Lord. Maybe find points to make her Slaaneshi, swing that Murder Sword before loyalist Lightning Claws? Command Warlord traits look best for her - all of them have a use in this army, and the compact play area makes the bubble very effective. I could upgrade her to a 4++ with a Mutation (which would suit her) by dropping a psy level (which would make summoning very difficult when the Warp proves fickle.

Think Khornate WTs are a waste, they'll not get benefits of Rage on their DS charge. Maybe switch to Nurgle instead, tank more OW hits.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hmm. Didn't notice that Allied Detachments have to have a different Faction to the Warlord. I'm not splitting the Cultists into two bags of easy kill points, so scratch that.

I also didn't notice that, whereas loyalist Chapters can take each other as Allies, Traitor Legions cannot. Also, there's no option for any Legion to take Fabius Bile as a wildcard, even though he's specifically written as an independent mercenary. Man, Traitor Legions is a mess -.-

Brassicus Kohlgebort attained Apotheosis whilst fighting a Pack Leader accompanying Canis Wolfborn. The Space Wolves, having achieved their mission of stalling a Word Bearers advance whilst a servo-skull was retrieved, fell back. The newly-daemonic Prince returned to the fallen Forge World of Ghalmek, boasting of his endurance in the face of a Thunderwolf charge. Not being good with words, he demanded the Warpsmith in charge stop messing around in his workshop and come up with a name that described how his skin was as tough as the brass of the forge and his blade as hot as its coals. And thus was born Brassicus Kohlgebort!

These were my main sources of inspiration for his jetpack and posing:

Not a fan of Bayformers but warming up to them a bit more since Shia Labeouf slapped a Nazi.

Guyver is my favourite sci-fi.

When the casing took shape and I found a perfect Malefic Tome to sit on it, I knew exactly what his Spell Familiar would be doing

He's Lv3 with 2 Nurgle and 3 Malefic. Going to field-test him over the coming weeks; plan is to take a Cultist blob with a Daemonologist, and a Land Raider full of Khorne Possessed. Fly around Vector Striking and Nurgle's Rotting and Summoning, until a Herald of Nurgle with Grimoire gives him 3++ so he come down to ground and get smashing things up. Not going to try the amoeba swarm - I want to Summon stuff that'll give me an edge in the situation. Only thing I'm worried about is Tau.

Love the Daeomon Prince! Seeing the model in red of the usual Nurglite green takes a bit of getting used to, but that doesn't change anything about the wonderful conversion and composition work.

One small gripe, however, if I may: I assume, based on your piece of background for the Daemon Prince, that "Kohlgebort" is supposed to be a German(ic) version of "Coalborn", right? However, "gebort" (or rather "gebohrt") means "drilled" in German -- "geboren" is the participle you're after Or you'd have to use the noun - "Geburt" - which means "birth". At the same time, "Kohl" means "cabbage" and not "coal". The actual German word for coal would be "Kohle" or "Kohlen".

Now I'm always up for a little faux-German fun, but to make a long story short, "Brassicus Coalborn" would actually sound much cooler, at least from a German native speaker's perspective

Anyway, keep up the fantastic work!

I'm in the process of painting a unit of Khornate Warp Talons and taking the opportunity to blog my process. Starting with my red technique, metals and flesh to follow.

Now, as you look at these, bear in mind they are shot in indoors light, without varnishing. The paints used have different reflective properties, which makes them look very different to the finished effect when the varnish (Humbrol Satin Cote) gives it uniform behaviour under light. Every finished mini photographed no this blog is finished this way, so review them for an idea of how this process ends up.

Humbrol are the only brand I've found that works as I want it to. They do a Matt and Gloss finish, which can be used to get some nice effects; Tyranids especially benefit from shiny chitin. However be warned that a Matt will completely kill off the pearlesence of metallic paints and Gloss will make them look wet, so if you're not going NMM then Satin is the thing to use to protect your metals.

Now, onto the process:

Mephiston Red over black spray. One diluted coat is enough, there's going to be more layers.

Nuln Oil wash. Undiluted, single coat. Maybe apply a little more to recesses that look like they should be in more shadow.

Highlight with thinned Mephiston Red. You can use drybrushing, if you're in a hurry, or gradiented glazing if you want to take your time. These were glazed; note that zooming in here, you can see artefacts of the paint and wash having different reflective properties - the slightest tint of Mephiston appears to the camera to have high contrast to unglazed areas.

Hard edge highlight in white. This should be done with a couple of applications of thinned down paint. It's worth making the corners and other parts that really catch the light to be whiter.

Now, I'm still on my old Blood Red pot, here, but what you need is a bright red layer paint (I'm not sure about Evil Suns Scarlet - it looks like it might be a bit too orange) thinned down and applied in several layers, enough to completely cover the white. Drybrushing can work but I recommend glazed highlights for this stage, at the very least there should be one very thin glaze over all but the shadows to help smooth the gradient. Again, the camera is picking up some contrast artefacts - stay tuned for the finished pics taken in good light

I'm not normally a fan of nurgle or anything heavily mutated but the work you put into these is great alla round, from both a painting and modelling/conversion aspect. The cultists are a brilliant idea and those nurglings are just adorable, love the beautiful variation in colour you put into them. The oblits and mutis look better than the official GW model in my opinion, very clever and inspired conversions on those.

Raptor Talon ready to take flight!

Inyoni was a Seraph who was attacked by a Lord of Slaanesh of the Night Lords. She managed to disarm him of his Murder Sword and make him fall by his own blade. In her hand, the weapon spoke to her of martial perfection, and in a moment of weakness her soul was lost. She often forsakes the decadence of her Slaaneshi fellows for the company of Khornate Warriors who share her lust for battle. Over time, her patron has bestowed such gifts upon her that she is a match for her Chaos Space Marine brethren, whose respect she has earned. It is whispered that she is nearly more of the Warp than of the Materium, and that Daemonhood may be almost within her grasp. She leads groups of paratroopers in daring drops, setting her eyes upon an enemy officer and not consciously perceiving the rest of the battle until he falls to her blade.

I chose a Zulu name for her, as her posture reminds me of Henry Cele's fighting style as Shaka:

It occurred to me that I never photographed my finished Land Raider. We had good light yesterday - didn't need to make any edits at all save cropping - so here it is:

Every SM trophy is from an Ultramarines successor. The banners are magnetised, and make handy HP markers. The passenger could be a Terminator or Power Armoured marine; of late, it's mostly been carrying ObSec Possessed to make first turn charges (the reach is a move of 12", a disembark of 5" - the front door is behind the tracks - and then a Fleet charge). They've performed marvellously as both killers and tarpits. Overcosted, my foot!

Just got in a very satisfying quick game. 700pts, my Possessed, Land Raider, Sorceror and Cultists against a Bailisik, Executioner, Punisher, Lord Commissar, Scout Sentinal, and two Veteran squads.

He'd occupied both his corners, but Terrain was dense, so my Land Raider could roll up one flank towards the general, a squad and the Punisher - and hide from some Ordnance whilst only taking Glancing hits from some and Daemonic saving it from worse. His Sentinel trotted forwards to take a cheeky HK shot and promptly legged it when I summoned Flesh Hounds. "We're probably far enough" advised his friend.

Wrong! Khorne's hunters made up for my second turn PotW first blood Warlord suicide (I refuse to learn from these mistakes) by bringing down the chicken walker and getting ready to pound on veterans, Basilisk, and Executioner. On the other flank, a plucky lascannon shot immobilised the Punisher and the Possessed came out to play. Ripping apart a Sergeant earned my Champion Immortal Warrior, to protect all his Wound from instant death. The rest of the vessels ripped apart the Punisher and sent the veterans running. Didn't hit the Lord Commissar, though - he got torn up in his own turn.

Turn four, the remaining veterans fired at the Flesh Hounds to little avail, and more ordnance failed to harm the the Land Raider. The Possessed jumped back into the Khornemobile, which ran over and shot at the rallied survivors of the Possessed charge, as the Flesh Hounds took down the Executioner. If we hadn't hit time, it would have been interesting to see if they could have survived a round of shooting sans cover and the Raider could have made another banzai charge against the distant Basilisk. Five kill points to three won it for me at the bell, though

Bringing in some fire support! My current 1K list is these guys, a Land Raider full of Possessed, a Cultist squad with a Daemonologist, and a Juggerlord. He's waiting for another day of good light for his Dakka debut!

So far I've had ok results. Dealt with a compact rival Chaos army's infantry assault by holding up in a firebase then charging forward with three Daemonic units. Seekers punched way above their weight, which is just as well as Juggerlord killed a whole Cultist (and wounded himself in his Blind Rage) before getting ID'd by a Chainfist :(

Anyway. Bring on the pics:

Well, that was quite a battle I just had! A Land Raider full of Possessed, the new Havocs above, and ten Cultists joined by a Sorcerer and Juggerlord faced off against a Tau gunline. Two Hammerheads, two Broadsides, a Melta Crisis Commander, two Fire Warrior teams, a Pathfinder team, and a lone DSing dual flamed Crisis suit. And two Piranha, one with a burst cannon, one with Melta. Things did not look good! I hugged the right corner, deploying where no Broadsides could see me. Then Kroot infiltrators set up to my left! I didn't steal first turn, and as the Broadsides floated out to take their first shots, I joked that I might surrender if the LR pops on the first turn.

They missed! All I lost on the first turn was the Havoc champion. Eh, no problem, his comrades will avenge him; three dead Kroot. The Land Raider advances and starts blasting at a Hammerhead, the Possessed jumping out - the Juggerlord leaving the Cultists to high-five them - and promptly pouncing on a lurking Piranha and ripped it apart. First blood! Some Flamers were Summoned, but manifested too far away to troll the Kroot. Sorcerer already got a nosebleed. Ah well.

The dakka Piranha moved forwards and added it's firepower to that of the Kroot; another Havoc down, and his comrades panic and jump down from their vantage points. The Possessed thought they were safe hiding in a building from a Tau gunline, before noticing that half of their number had grown red dots on their foreheads. Seven hit the dust. The Raider took a bit of damage from the Hammerheads, but gave back and forced one to Jink. The Havocs rallied and returned fire on the Piranha, also forcing it to evade. The Flamers floated towards the Kroot and sent three survivors running, evolving a more robust consititution as they ran, and a pack of Flesh Hounds manifested to join their supernatural fellows (with no Perils!). The surviving Possessed leapt out of cover and followed their General into the jaws of the enemy. They took the overwatch in their stride and slaughtered some Fire Warriors with impunity.

Of course, now that they were in the face of the Tau army they attracted every gun that couldn't pop a Land Raider (it didn't). Fine! The overkill was immense, and one unit that had committed to fire on them didn't even get to shoot. They'd earned three KP and awarded three in return, but this was less about bookkeeping as it was about taking the initiative. Only other shooting was the Flamer Crisis Suit torching a Flesh Hound and the Piranha taking out a Havoc. This time their return aim was true and the skimmer exploded in mid air. The Flamers finished off the rallied Kroot and a Hammerhead again had to Jink to survive. The Flesh Hounds pounced on their attacker to little effect other than tarpitting him (or was he tarpitting them?) and the Sorcerer resisted the temptations whispered to him by malevolent forces. He might actually survive a battle today!

Markerlights shone on the Land Raider, but it's armour held. It's opponents could make no such claim, as a Hammerhead fell! The Flamers moved into position for an attack next turn. The Cultists stayed hidden behind their wall, a headless body of a Possessed by every window in front of them. No Kill Points For anyone this turn, even when a Flesh Hound got kicked to death and forced an Instability test.

Final turn, and the Tau took no chances. The real threats were clear. Their Commander moved forwards to bring his Melta into play, without luck. Marker Lit Pulse fire left a lone Flamer on one wound. A Rail Cannon round hit true at the perfect angle to cause a fuel detonation... and came out the other side without causing harm. Good old Daemonic! The lone Flamer took full advantage of the rule that his Template projected vertically as high as you like, and killed the entire Pathfinder team. The Cultists and Land Raider surged forwards, blasting away at the exposed Commander, but failed to get past his Shield Drones. As the game ended, I'd managed a meaty seven kill points to the Tau's three. Boom!

To celebrate, here's some more Havocs:

People have been commenting on their simplicity and lacquered finish. I envision my Chapter of Word Bearers as having a significant number of brethren who devote themselves to martial discipline, destroying corpse-botherer opposition to enable the Dark Apostles to perform their duties. The lacquered effect is a pleasant byproduct of using Humbrol satin varnish - it resists skin oils well, it conserves pearlesence of metallic paints, it solves the problem of different shades having different reflective properties, and it is tough enough that foam figure trays don't scrape paint off my resins and metals. It separates and takes some stirring to prepare, but it can be wiped off a tough brush without using solvents.

Now. Local GW is moving to 750pt games this month. Possessed jumping out of a Land Raider and using their surprising threat range have worked well in 1K, but I know that's not going to cut the mustard with a quarter of my budget gone. I'm thinking...

Chaos Daemons CAD. Herald of Tzeentch with Endless Grimoire (knows all Change powers) and Locus of Creation (double Horror splits), with a unit of Pinkies with a Blastard Standard and a unit of Brimstones. That's at least four WC a turn, with access to D if a Land Raider or worse should pop up.

Word Bearers Allies. Lv 3 Sorcerer of Nurgle with Palanquin, Familiar, and Scripts of Erebus. Dark Vengeance Cultists. Havocs with three Autocannon. That's light armour dealt with without having to overkill with WC3 D, a little insurance against poor Warp rolls, and a couple of Malefic spells with little risk of headexplodey.

Plan is to advance with a horde that just grows and grows, summoning Flesh Hounds early on and then Flamers with precision to strike at key targets. Maybe get myself an Exalted one. Bring along a Bloodthirster, just in case of Possession. Horrors' standard gives insurance against Warp Storm backfiring on my Sorcerer. I know I could shuffle things around to get an extra Autocannon, but I think it'd make the Havocs a high priority target. Two throwaway bolter guys makes harassing fire less tempting than when it's almost guaranteed to reduce the unit's firepower.

Gonna have to make the Sorcerer, a Herald, and some more Flamers. If the Warp Storm gives me a unit, think I'll aim for Plaguebearers?

Well, I tend to batch paint in fives, and I'm volunteering in a charity shop where I can paint behind the till. The red is 80% drybrushing and ink, and the metal is pure silver with inks, so much of the model takes little time.

Also my photography is dependent on the weather, so there's often a bunch of stuff that's been finished and waiting for a lightly overcast day with a bright white sky and low winds. The Heldrake was finished at Christmas! I've just photographed a few more finished projects and I'll get the snaps ready to upload when I'm killing time on the train

Who remembers this Lord? Always loved that gun arm. This might be a bit of a miscast - his facial detail took a fair bit of brushwork to get right, and he still is angry or happy depending on where you view him from. Classic silhouette, though.

I really like the heatstain on the whole Melta gun barrel. I might have to redo some of my existing minis with this effect.

Also you make me wish I'd saved the metal WB shoulderpads for just champion models, rather than giving each marine in the squad one, since they're no longer available.

Huh. So they are. I'd better carefully ration out the few I have remaining in my bits box. Hopefully we'll get a new CSM set with various Legion pads, since Deathwatch have shown this is easily do-able and very popular. Less of this 'five models, ten pads' kit system, GW - especially with Chaos, who clearly want variety.

I shall endeavour to blog a power weapon at some point, though. In the meantime, here's the latest recruit - the Juggerlord whose debut kill tally was a lone Cultist:

One of my first CSM characters, this. Originally made him around the Millennium - took a fine saw to a lead Juggernaut, and Arbaal the Undefeated's axe, and gave them to a Berzerker.

He originally had a Combi-Melta, but this is a bad choice for him these days, so that got snipped. I sculpted some detail onto the plain rod that formed the handle before. Also, his '90s backpack got replaced - first with a RT one, then as I took apart a Sigmarhammer Khorne Lord for his giant Flesh Hound, I realised the cape fitted the motion of the mini perfectly. So, I sculpted a backpack vent in one of the tears of the cape, and here we go!

Great Juggerlord lindsay40k.

Quite the conversion.

I understand how you feel when the rules change and make some models less attractive. Most of mine go back to Rogue Trader...but sometimes the rules change again and the weapon/model comes back into favour.

It's been a while since my last update! But weather has finally provided decent photography light. So, here's Gudoza and his crew - ready to take out any armour. His gunners are inclined to take careful aim for weak points, but Gudoza prefers to burn a hole in a vehicle's hull just large enough for a melta bomb to be thrown through.

Well, Gudoza's crew are good for wrecking tanks, but how about some anti-Astartes firepower?

Go on. Charge all that I5 FNP Plasma. See what happens. Can take them as Havocs, or if HS slots are tight - or, if they need to Sternguard a tough position, Chosen. No need to WYSIWYG Chainswords on them now everyone only gets two weapons.

But wait? How do all these gunners get into position? Got you covered:

So far, they've racked up a pretty good body count - even killing a rival Chaos Lord who expended his Biker minions to get through the hail of firepower, only to find his Power Sword inflicted No Pain on the Champion whilst the unit slowly pulled him apart. That taught him not to follow a slightly unorthodox interpretation of the Book of Lorgar!

I'm going to miss Slaanesh being awesome, and having access to troopers armed with rifle, pistol, and chainsword.

These Word bearers are going from strength to strength. Gudoza's squad looks the business, as does the plasma squad. I especially like the use of different marks of Plasma gun, right down to some being adorned with Chaos iconography while others remain plain - very much in keeping with the look and ethos of the Traitor Legions in the 41st Millennium!

Looking at 8ed rules again, I think I'll have to play the banner bearer's drum-fed Bolter there as a Bolt Pistol, 3ed True Grit style, and add a Chainsword to his belt. Slaanesh is strictly a melee unit's deity as of this weekend. Still, Plasma squads look incredible with a Chaos Lord cheering them on - I've got parts for making a Dreadclaw to drop them right on some corpse-lovers.

Speaking of dropping in melefic entities, here's some Chaotic critters:

When I roll Incursion, these are my go-to beasties after I've summoned some Bloodcrushers and I've gotta go faster. They run rings around enemies, bouncing off enemy units at supersonic speed. And they can easily turn those gribbly eyes on backfield gunner units - snooping as usual!

Played and won my first 48K game this week. I was intending to get a final game of 7th in, with 20 Cultists, 20 CSMs, a Baleful Icon Dark Apostle and a Palanquin Sorcerer, but everyone's on 8th so I went with it. Faced off against Orks and outnumbered them. Hah! Neither my Sorcerer nor his Weirdboy helped either of us. But 20 Khornate marines with melee rerolls... wow. They slaughtered everything (except some grits, who suicided on the Cultists' flamer). Frag grenade took out four Boyz. Nobz rolled a 3 on a 4" charge. Turn three I declared a charge against his entire remaining army and finished them off. Definitely liking hordes and guaranteed charge rerolls.

The victorious commanders:

HD versions:

Spoiler:

Moloch's pistol is an amalgam, I wanted a bayonet and ammo belt. I think I'll keep it, it adds to his relentless appearance. Not sure what role Fuster will have nowadays, think I want a Sorcerer with Jump Pack to buff the front lines, and a Summoner wants to be unmarked for versatility. The Nurgling behind him has had a whiff of Nurgle's Taint and is feeling a bit worse for wear.

I seem to be pretty much up to date on my Chaos photos! I have a few more units to photograph, and I'm thinking about expanding into some World Eaters support and have my Death Guard to add, but apart from that my collection's at a pretty playable level now so this blog will probably slow down a bit whilst I get cracking on my Primaris-heavy Novamarines.

Got my second game in, against Ynnari. I misunderstood the restrictions on Summoning, but the Daemons I brought in didn't really do much other than catch some bullets. I had 20 Marines, 10x2 Cultuists, 5 Havocs with Autocannons, and the two new HQ above.

First turn, Havocs shot down a Raider and Marines took out the passengers. Second turn, Cultists flamered some Wyches and Marines shot the survivors. Third turn, Autocannons & melta guns killed a Wraithlord, and thanks to Warptime the CSM horde charged the remaining Guardians & Farseer. Astartes outnumbering Eldar 2:1, with re-rolls to hit... we called it at that.

It seems that a horde of Word Bearers is a pretty formidable force! I was thinking about replacing the Bolter guys with more duellists, but having an even split between the two is working well - I can castle for a turn or two, taking casualties out of the riflemen, and still make some brutal charges. I'm trying to tweak my list to have 250 Reinforcement Points at 1K - this seems to have a lot of potential, allowing for Be'lakor, a Keeper of Secrets, or 2-3 handy units.

Well... I said this project is taking a step back in priority. But now my local WH store is preparing to start a summer campaign, ending in a three table Apocalypse lock-in... yeah, I want in, there, and I can't see myself getting 100pow of Novamarines done in a couple of months! So, I think it's back to the forges of Ghalmek, to fill out a few more units and get a few more toys that will hopefully bring down some corpse-lovers. I'm thinking... more Warp Talons (assuming Warptime from deep strike is still go?) and a Hellforged Predator with ALL THE FLAMERS.

Got a good practice game in today, a Dark Angels gunline expected to draw out my 20-man Marine blob so that Deathwing Knights could teleport in and kill my Sorcerer & Havocs. Nice plan, be a shame if... Warptime were to put that frenzied mob right in your face on turn one and need the Terminators to fight it off! Despite some terrible accuracy, Missile Launchers and Smite did some serious Terminator killing, including a Master of the Deathwing whose chasing down of Cultists to beat a kill point out of them left him stood in the open like Benny Hill. Krak! 5W gone. Frag frag frag frag! Try to save all those! I figured 4D6 S4 AP- was a more reliable way to take off a final wound than 4S8 AP-2. On reflection, it might not be, but it worked this time - and I pulled out a two point lead.

35pow games are really tight but still fun. That's the level I've got to get used to for the first round of the campaign, so no Summoning... unless... oh, no, Mister Flibble, we can't possibly do *that*. Who would clear up the mess?

Well, that was quite a battle. My Missile, Autocannon, and Plasma Havocs, led by Sekou and letting the Cultists have the glory of being the vanguard, faced off against Guard with two squads, a sniper Command squad, a Plasma Sentinel, a Missile squad, an Officer...

...and a Tank Commander.

Uh-oh.

Better use that fort in the middle of the board to block LOS and creep through the ruins around it.

Okay, it's Open War, units are worth their Power in VPs with a multiplier for a Warlord kill, let's see what the Twist is...

...oh, shooting is limited to 12", with the fog gradually lifting.

Onwards! We Advanced the big guns onto vantage points. The medium ranged stuff legged it forwards. The Tank Commander...

...rolled towards us. He wanted to get in range, and he blew up a lot of Cultists.

And was within 18" of every Plasma and Melta gun.

That didn't work out too well for him! By the time the heat rays had dissipated, he had one wound left. One! That'll never do, let's fire the Cultists' Flamer at him. Ka-boom! He exploded and took a bunch of his troops with him. Autocannon fire saw off the rest, and our own Missile troops shredded their counterparts. The Cultists charged the Sentinel, to deny it a few kills, and it ran off next turn to let the surviving infantry blow the Cultists to hell.

But that left them and their Command squad very close to ten Plasma Havocs, with an Icon of Excess. At this point the corpse-lovers decided they'd had enough and legged it. Horus was right!

---

In other news, work continues on the Predator:

Did a bit more tweaking and got these bits glued on. Just need a bit of gap filling and sanding, then it's time for rivets and then the green stuff comes out.

Got the riveting done and the trellis 99% neatened up. I'm mostly using Humbrol liquid poly to stick plastic and filling gaps with either thin plastic or Army Painter thick plastic glue. A stroke of thin poly neatens up the surface and a shave with the scalpel flattens it.

Got a lot of work in today.

I drilled holes for copper wire and secured it in place with superglue. Took a saw to the exhausts - they're getting chaosed up.

Gave every wire a thin coating of GS and let it cure for an hour or so. The length of covered sections was considered with a view to the next step. You can see how the clusters coming out of the cupola and the turret mounting have been fixed into a chunk of GS, enabling me to lift them out for tricky sculpting and perhaps painting.

Bent the wires into the shape of Hydra-inspired weapon systems and pinned in place Chaotic muzzles; I have quite a few from fifteen years ago, recogniseable by a pale colour, that are a softer plastic - a couple of them broke during positioning and needed replacing. I'll try to find the missing jaws and repair them, or else repurpose them sometime.

Each muzzle has two mechatendrils - one supplying fuel for the weapon, and another for the pilot flame; the combi-Flamer also has a stubbish Bolter muzzle. They've tangled together and grown into knotted masses; had to slice the cupola in half to accomodate sculpting. The Lasher Tendrils also had to be pulled off as they get in the way - they'll be remounted once sculpting is finished so that it may slake its Infernal Hunger.

And finally, connections have been added wherever mechatendrils come close together; these will help hold the positions I've fine-tuned, and will serve as a foundation for connective tissue that had grown where a Helbrute-style dermal layer has grown over two sections that have tangled close together.

...

In gaming news, I hope I'm not TFG'ing. I've yet to lose a game in 8ed, fielding lists that either use a Warptimed 20 CSM Horde as a sledgehammer, or else take three Havoc Squads to qualify for an extra CP in Patrol-sized games. That said, I'm being actively invited to games, I'm in a metagame where people cheerfully threw Krak Grenades at Fliers in 7ed & we've had at least one Roboutte mirror match, and I think most of my decisive victories have come down to unforced errors by opponents - like driving a Russ within Melta range, or flying a Raider straight at Autocannons when there was opportunity to block LOS.

I'm looking forwards to getting this mechanical beast in play and going back to a dynamic and risky strategy, rather than this highly effective firebase that deals with missions calling for CQC by shooting everything and then marching over the ashes.

The Predator's coming along, but I've got another project I've bumped up the queue due to the new Codex making something awesome. Here's a detail I've added to it:

Started with a patch of green stuff. It's filling a hole, but this works as long as the GS is a few millimetres thick. The tools are a Galeforce Nine sculpter, and a couple of home made ones - paper clips glued into handles, filed to a round end and a point, and bent into shape as needed. I get my GS from The Troll Trader - this project and the Predator have consumed a FOOT of it already.

Used the round headed tool to press in a central hole, and eight surrounding holes.

Give each hole a complimentary pair, creating little 'marks of Nurgle'. These form the negative space between the stalks of the arrows. You know what I'm talking about because you've already skimmed the photos.

Press in eight more holes, where the arrows will terminate.

Join the dots to define the arrows.

Use the wide round sculpter to smooth off the surrounding holes, making the negative space smoothly transition into the background plane.

I can't get a better picture as the construction is not to be touched whilst GS cures. But now the pressed holes in eachnegative space have been joined together with more gentles presses of the round tool. The pointed tool adds some variety in the pockmarks. And there we go!

In other news, my winning streak has not survived contact with the Konor campaign. It's big multiplayer games round my end at the moment, and... I'm not convinced they're a good idea, in a game where melee is bottlenecked by the need to give the inactive side the ability to interrupt with Counter-Attack. We sometimes don't reach turn three.

Last game, my Fiends failed a charge and got shot, Flesh Hounds got speedbumped and then charged by Harlequins, and Terminators deepstriked in, crippled a Leman Russ and that huge new dreadnought...

...which proceeded to kick them all to death when they charged it to finish the job!

Ah well, that's my bad rolls out the way. I also curated two friends' introduction to 8ed, though, so hopefully I'll be getting in some less overwhelming games soon. Maybe even field... it... DiabolicalLaughter.jpg.exe

Working on a Karanak, and he's an opportunity to demonstrate how I sculpt heads.

I don't work a blob of putty - I work several layers in an organic approach. I make a rough shape of a skull with some musculature, Here, we're at that stage; after this, I'll be sculpting skin, with eye sockets left empty; the eyes are done seperately, as I find pressing in a detail there pushes out a bulge elsewhere.

I've also got the turret mounted in the Predator, should have it paint-ready soon. I'm running low on green stuff again!

Hellforged Predator ready to roll:

I'm trying to make the blood brighter. It's tricky, because as with the Land Raider, it's going over a deep contrasting colour, which leads to a dark shade. On top of that, I start with some thin layers of 3 parts Blood For the Blood God, 1 part Rhinox, 2 parts water, to git the look of tpdried layers. I tried mixing in some red paint for the final BFtBG, but it comes out a peachy orange colour, likely because of the white that many coloured paints add in.

Next time, I'll have a go with some diluted red paint layers under the final blood effect. And perhaps a lighter tone of paint - maybe a White Scars tank.

Gave the new Predator it's test drive today! 200 power Chaos vs Space Wolves & Tyranids. It got some burning done and survived new model syndrome - though only barely; they had orders to kill it and would have done had I not crippled a Stormwolf

It was a really fun game! We adapted Tactical Escalation and added Cities of Death to the mix. Both sides captured the Objective their high command required. My attempt to destroy Imperium units per my orders fell just short, whereas a tide of Genestealers were joined by a Mawloc and the Swarmlord to gang up on my Bloodthirster - and show their Space Wolves commander how they are Worthy Of The Sagas

Next week I should have a Hell Talon ready for flight - think I might have to thin out some Genestealer hordes with a bombing run or two

Thanks, @RSJake!

Now, this army's reached the point where two issues are coming up: storage, and presentation. I've got spaces in my shelves for 2x2 boards, and it's time we made an Infernal Castellum Stronghold.

I want the four bunkers to be compatible with my planned modular gaming table, which uses 1x1 boards with excavated spaces for based buildings & ruins. The road runs through the middle of each tile, with the space overlapping four tiles; this keeps big buildings from the table edge.

To start myself off, I marked off a 3" grid with key points and the hypothetical table grid marked as well:

I got out my bags o' bases and worked out what it would look like to have the bunkers filled to capacity with everyone manning the battlements:

I marked out some floor plans. They accommodate the bases well. But then I remembered - my cities of death setup requires buildings have 1" pavements for Land Raiders to get down the street without losing their sponsons; this iteration is going to be scrapped and revised as it will not allow heavy tanks to leave the base:

The new floor plan allows for 6" gates, much better form for the function of the terrain (if any of my old design tutors are reading, they will recognise my use of imperial and metric units and fractions with inconsistent denominators):

The more compact battlements make for much less empty space on top of a full bunker. There's room for an officer to inspect the defenders on the main bunker, and for two more to survey the battlefield from the roof:

If attackers enter the fortress, defenders can also man the bunkers to fire inside the walls:

So far, so good. I think I might fatten the command bunker tower a little, but overall I think I can draw this all out and begin the messy part.

Still with me? Good, 'cause summer is over and it's TERM(inators) TIME:

I can now drop four plasma or melta Terminators with a heavy flamer, or a full ten man squad. Icon of Wrath, because I have plasma Chosen who benefit greatly from Endless Cacophony and I want these guys to definitely get to use their melee weapons. Twice, if they get in with the Heirodule that's arrived in my gaming circle.

Terminators? They are Annointed

Got some more sacred ones ready for battle:

I'm really pleased with the eyes. I paint them white, then thinly stipple the area with dilute Scorpion Green (ask a veteran, novitiates).

A Herald or two is handy. Their buff auras and spells can affect Possessed and Obliterators, and a regeneration spell is most welcome with a Daemon Prince leading the charge. Plus, they can keep Daemon units out of Word Bearers detachments, thereby conserving our oh-so-awesome Legion Trait. That's right, corpse lovers - look scared of our marginally better Morale rolls!

I say I got them ready for battle - I have a tray full of finished stuff and every time I see a white sky and take it outside, I get maybe one unit shot before the rain begins. Recently picked up a Forge World kit to add to the backlog, that'll keep the bunker unfinished for a good month longer

Mounted leaders incoming:

I'm a fan of Fiends of Slaanesh, and these two make a great accompaniment, especially with Seekers screening them. Recently won a game when my opponent decided to try out stomping with her new Knight and I burned 2CP to deny it Overwatch:

The Fiends then forced it to stay in melee whilst a Daemon Prince beat it down. Everyone then turned on a sixpence to scrag Harald Bluetooth. My only two unit kills of the game, but when you draw Kingslayer and Big Game Hunter, that's enough to reach a decisive 10VPs

Best thing about this squadron? Ghazan gets +1S, as he's a Daemon

He's named after a Mongol ruler of Persia, as he is an excellent mounted marksman and force multiplier. In his first outing, he enabled the slaughter of a Thunderwolf unit that had broken through our lines by taking down their Storm Shields. We may have lost the Konor war, but that battle was a solid win.

His Death Hex is a Dark Elf head I found discarded in a Warhammer store. I like to make something of interesting found pieces, give them a new home

Wild KARANAK appeared!

Quite pleased with how he came out. The two sculpted heads have a few more hard and sharp edges, which put me in mind of '90s Godzilla. I feel that his eyes are let down a bit by the painting, but my OSL technique isn't Golden Demon standard and relies a fair bit on saturated colour - which I already use for my highlights, giving limited places to go to pick out relief details with play of light.

But, game-wise, he's not at all bad! His attacks aren't enough to have a good shot at killing a solid fighter type character, but just telling my opponent 'he has the scent of Njal Stormcaller' seems to make him a rather serviceable scarecrow

And here we go:

I glued the arse end onto the extension and got cracking on the skin. I cut a recess in for the flying stand, then a piece of plastic that fits the recess. A big lump of green stuff stuck to that, allowed to set for a half hour, then a well moistened flying stand pressed in. It took several presses, in between moistening the hole (stop giggling). Then, when it touched the plastic, a copper wire wrapped around and twisted firmly in place - this will stop the hole splitting (I said stop it).

The hole for the stand is glued in place and more skin is sculpted.

The arse is mostly sculpted. I made some plastic strips to fit the edges of the armour.

The arse is glued on and tentacles & missiles fitted. The master armour edges have been used to make a plasticard stencil. Colour coding added by Sharpies and sealed on with poly cement.

Ten copies of each armour edge cut out with a pin tool. Not a scalpel - an edge would damage the stencil, this needed a point.

Hundreds of coins cut from a plastic rod and glued on to make rivets. Whacked on an undercoat and it’s now on the painting queue!

Amazing drop pod indeed, looking more and more demonic and less and less tyranid, well done !
