Not a great photographer, but here's most of what I've painted for Malifaux so far...I should be adding some 10T Brothers and Katanaka Sniper soon, and then Yin and Samurai after them. This game is so sweet and has really had me inspired to paint a lot!

Whats with all these goofy Guild and Ten Thunder (ex)humans? Time for a proper Gremlin crew.
And on the rebellious side some Arcanists.
Although to be honest I don't thing Mei Feng is really all that loyal to them or the Ten Thunders.
And all the rest. ... for now.

The colours were very much intentional. After doing more muted military colours for Infinity, I wanted to do some brighter colours again.

Hey guys, great thread. I finished my Carver this morning and I am searching for basing materials at the moment. I want to put him in a cornfield setting so his base is not quite finished.

That is the old one, right? How well did it go together?
82191
Post by: JamesGang
Hi Matt, it went together just fine. Obviously his assembly is not as seamless as the new plastics but overall he was not challenging. The left leg had a bit of a gap that needed green stuff to fill in near his hip. The arm with the knife and head went on fine with no issues. I used a bit of putty and CA glue to assemble them. The model itself was fun to paint and there was a nice level of detail about it. I glued him to the base and then again applied Milliput putty around the base to give him a more substantial securing as well. Haven't had any issues with handling and is one of my most favorite models to date.
I've seen images of the new plastic carver and I have to say I'm not a fan of the design. It's rather cartoony and does not give that creepy bogeyman that the metal one exudes.
I do need to find some miniature pumpkins and crows for my basing. The plastic one does have the crows, that is one thing it has in its favor.

JamesGang wrote:I've seen images of the new plastic carver and I have to say I'm not a fan of the design. It's rather cartoony and does not give that creepy bogeyman that the metal one exudes. That seems to be an overall change in aesthetic direction for the game in general. I like it (most of the time, I hated the new Tuco art enough to hunt down the old metal), but I can see why people who have been with the game for longer don't.
82191
Post by: JamesGang
True and for most part I am pleased with the change. Some of the metals were "meh" compared to their newer plastic counterparts now but the same goes for the converse as well for a few models. Just comparing both models is the best way to judge the design to see which best captures the horrorifying scarecrow trope in your own opinion.
I really like the new lord chompy bits and the death marshals compared to their metal brethren for instance but the Carver in plastic is just cartoony. I also prefer the metal version of Mortimer as the pose is much more dynamic.
Oh well at least all of the models paint up beautifully!
@Mathieu:
Here is the unpainted unassembled Carver in metal and a link to see a comparison of both versions of the figure.

Thanks, it was a series of washes and highlights after basing with dark angels green and black mixed. Then successive highlights of the base mix with nurglitch green added yo lighten it up. The wash cannot be replicated as it was what I had left of thraka green, asurmen blue and devlan mud.

My latest crew. Isn't nice that as soon as you upload photos, you realize you have a ton of little things to tidy up on them?
Yan Lo
Chiaki
Some Ashigaru
Toshiro. I'm not sure about the orange of the collar, the yellow and blue match my Ten Thunders... but the orange I was thinking of redoing as green. I think it would tie him to the Ressurectionists a bit more.
And my greatest sadness. Izamu. I had it very well painted (I think) and then my matte varnish spewed a thick white layer of dust on it. I corrected as much as I could before going to game with it, and then I just never finished the job, I'm too disheartened.
I ought to. It's a beautiful model.
37470
Post by: tomjoad
If you hadn't said anything, I would have assumed that the dust was an intentional effect. On Izamu in particular I think that it's an effect that fits his background. I really like it as it is.

Something I've noticed about Malifaux models, particularly the new plastics. It's very hard to make them not look good. The models have so much character, and work well with both bright or dark and gritty paint schemes and have just enough detail to break up the models that it's always a joy seeing a painted crew.
59176
Post by: Mathieu Raymond
True. Although it can be harder to spam core models because the poses and look are so unique.

Post by: houshin
Playing as Gremlins, this is the problem I have. If I run Sommer or Lenny I can have a few different Bayou or Piglets in play at once. So I have a mixture of things like metal and plastic piglets (7 different altogether) and 7 Bayou Gremlins (plastic and metal as well). Although I am only learning so I tend to only be able to keep a couple alive at any one time.
One thing I love about the miniatures is how easy they are to paint. I love the sculpts that the likes of GW, Warlord, Privateer Press and so on do but they can be varying degrees of complicated (the main reason I haven't started a Scions army yet). But these are so simple (and I don't mean that as a negative). They also lend themselves to any skill level. I am currently working on Miss Ery and even with a bit of shading and a couple of colours she looks great. Which is a surprise for such a large piece.
And here she is. Need to tidy a lot of the washes and get the rest of the stitches, claws and teeth done. Once that is done a couple of pink patches and then I will highlight her.
Tempted to try and do a glow effect from each of the seams, but that may be too much. Will wait till it's closer to completion.

Yeah, something I didn't appreciate until I started painting some Malifaux was how good a model can be with simpler detail. Someone once told me old timer painters liked models like these because 'they paint up a treat', and I never really got it. Too much GW at the time with skulls on buckles on ammo belts on more skulls.
Malifaux plastics tend to have large areas free of detail broken up by simple details. This lets you explore, or not, painting techniques you might not have had the skill level to try on more complicated models. It also has the bonus f being easier to paint, so for people like me who are terrible at details, they can stick to painting the basics with clean lines and clear transitions between different parts of a model and they still look good.
40919
Post by: spiralingcadaver
Yep, I'm not always happy with the over all model (like when it's out of scale or in a pose I don't like), but Malifaux plastics take paint exceptionally well regarding how easy it is to get something nice going.
82933
Post by: houshin
It's funny. I used to be scared of the Malifaux miniatures as they tend to look so good I thought I would ruin them by just running my brush near them.
Now doing a batch of 10 Guardsmen, or 10 Wehrmacht Infantry scares me more.
I am now looking forward to getting hold of something like The Dreamer set, especially to have a go at painting Lord Chompy Bits. And I am really looking forward to painting Merris.

Post by: spiralingcadaver
Yeah, huge leaps and strides from a technical perspective, but there's a lot of their original style I prefer. I think the only faction I think has seen near-universal improvement is the Gremlins, but even with them I still think that alt/avatar somer is way cooler than the current one, and don't like the mctavish concept art.

Yeah, Neverborn and Outcasts both saw big strides forward too, but they both also saw some minis I just don't particularly like. 1e Jack daw, Ronin, Nekima for instance are some of my favorites, vs. only okay plastics.
I think the only faction I like worse as a whole is Guild, though (Guards in general, Justice, most of the Ortegas, Lucius, Peacekeeper... there are a ton of old models I prefer and very few I like the updates for better).

Post by: Mathieu Raymond
The Ortega with two pistols is better in plastic, imho. I had to paint the metal one twice and he was soooo flat. Now he seems like a giant of a man, full of machismo, rather than a scrunty little thing that would fly away at the slightest breeze.
82933
Post by: houshin
My favourites of the current Guild are the two that cost the most. Santana and Miss Terious. I have the Miss Terious but can not find Santana's for below my upper limit (around the £50 mark).
I have been collecting both old metals and new Plastics. I do really like the new plastics (they put a lot of other manufacturers work to shame) but there was so much more character in the older metals.
One quick question, I have the Latigo Posse to paint up and was planning on painting them up with a more Mediterranean look. I just don't know where to start. My default skin on both my Cadians and Germans is Flat Brown, Bugmans Glow, Cadian Fleshtone. That just won't work for what I want in these.

Cheers. I have been debating if to go lighter on the skin, but I have a nasty habit of going too light for too much. I will create a lighter shade and just pick out the eyebrows, ears and other areas like the knuckles and toes.
The bag I need to give some thought. I was happy with a black leather bag. But the base he is going on is slightly dark as well so something brighter might be called for.

I agree, I think the bag could be left. I do think red on the fan will go a long way though. Try painting the eyes and teeth, and see where that brings you overall before highlighting the skin tone.

Zealot Miniatures made it. They also make some barrels, coffins, and other scenic elements as well, so it made it worth it to purchase from the UK. There's an electric guitar that comes on the sprue that I'll be using with the new Jack Daw when he comes out.

OK, got my first Guild Model finished yesterday. A Witchling Stalker. Got this done as I will be moving away from playing my Gremlins for a while and giving the Guild crews I have amassed a try. This was the perfect opportunity to try out painting a Guild Mini.
Happy with the overall results, the only thing I would change is toning down some of the brighter highlights on the cloak, but not along the bottom I am really happy with them there. Overall really happy with it though and I think this is probably my most accomplished model.

Really nice work! Love the metallics, and if you want to tone down the cloak a simple black wash would do it!

I've started to seal these now, but I was debating doing that but with a blue wash instead. All three are done and have had a coat of gloss varnish. Once they have had a coat of anti-shine or dullcote I will get some new photos of them.
I have 3 more to do, the metal versions, so I will bare that in mind. In fact I have done something similar with soft tone on some trousers I was doing for a Through the Breach campaign. Once she is done I will post up a pic. Not happy with her skin, but that is something I really need to work on.

So all three Witchling Stalkers are done and varnished.
Also decided to have a go at speed painting. Well sort off. The Enslaved Nephilim took about 2-3 hours to paint and base but over the course of Sunday while doing other things. I did learn that I really need to thin down Army Painter inks. They don't go on quite the same as the GW washes. But happy with the end results.

Those Witchling Stalkers look great! I'm a big fan of painting in layers with washes, you can get some great effects that way.
I also tried some speed painting recently. I did around 20 Gremlins in 5 hours...and won best painted at a tournament the next day. I'll post pics soon.

I'll try to get my usual opponent to bring his camera along so I can take pictures of my stuff aswell. Might have to let him win then as a bribe . I like how the whitchlings look, the nephilim looks great aswell. Wish I had the patience to paint that nice and clean, I Always get fed up with details and sublte highlights halfway through and then just rush to the end. Maybe I shouldn't have so much on the to do list still.

Thanks, It's a shame I didn't go back and give them a wash/glaze to tie the colours back together. I have been doing that a bit more with Ophelia, applying a wash/glaze both before and after the highlights and I am happy with the results I am getting.
I am also jealous of the 20 gremlins in 5 hours, I can paint about 5 gremlins in 20 hours.
But that is why I am going back to basics and keeping it simple. I really need to develop my skills with highlights and layers. Once I am happy with that I will move on to more advanced skills and try to make these figures stand out. But I am happy with the quality I am getting for the table top at the moment. The other 100-150 imperial guard I have to paint will help with that.
@gertjan, actually that's why I chose the nephilim, there isn't a great deal of detail on him. The skin was painted in a blue grey with a purple wash over the top (be careful with Army Painter inks, I found out they are a lot thicker than a standard GW wash). The fur, hair and hooves were painted brown with simple highlights and the diaper was painted khaki with a simple wash and highlights. The chain was painted silver with a wash and the ball was painted black, drybrushed silver, washed and then repeated a couple of time.
But I do have the same problem with GW kits. The tend to err on the side of a bit too fussy. And it frustrates me because everytime I think I am done there is some small detail I have missed.

Funny, I hear that a lot...
Look forward to seeing Sonia. She is in my to build pile. I am really enjoying playing with the Guild at the moment, in particular Perdita. The Gremlins can be frustrating and I never quite got to grips with their play style, except for The Brewmaster. I will go back to them after I have played around with all the other bits in the Guild and maybe dabbled in Neverborn & Arcanists. By that point I should have a better grip on what I need to be doing with them.

I must admit, after playing Gremlins for the last 6-9 months, it was the Brewmaster that clicked everything in place for me. I enjoyed Wong, but didn't have all the parts I needed to play him fully. So I am playing the Guild at the moment and will dabble in Arcanists soon.
Anyway, I am putting the finishing touches to Ophelia at the moment and then I need to base her. After that I have a couple of finishing Jobs to do (6 Imperial Guard, a Minion for my Sister and Gracie) and then I can proceed to paint some more of The Kin.

Took a break from the Nephilim for a while. All that blue was starting to bore me. Sorrows and Poltergeist done. I thought about going a level or two brighter on the green, but wanted to go for a darker overall tone. I feel it worked well on the Sorrows, but not so well on the Poltergeist. Live and learn.

Leveticus's kit was pretty good. IIRC a couple of the waifs had jewelry bits that were a little funky to attach (but also easy to leave off). His coat is 3 pieces and take a bit of patience, but the seams are well hidden and if you figure out the right order, it's pretty straightforward.
Man, do he and Rusty have some epic anime legs, though.

Painted these a while back and haven't posted them here yet. I'm just getting into Malifaux and torn between Gremlins and Outcasts, will probably do both in some order. Trying to document everything as I go via blogs and Youtube videos, gives an extra edge to the hobby where you have to think your ideas through and validate them not just go "I'll slap some paint 'ere and there and this can be a Mary Poppins themed giant robot".

I know, I also have some of the older Gremlin models in my mini storage some where. It's just a matter of if Gremlins are a good place to learn the rules or if I'm better off sticking with 1 solid faction for the moment to build up a decent collection for versatility.
5723
Post by: Dez
I thought I was going to start with Guild...and then I saw how fun Gremlins are. I couldn't resist myself
I did play Malifaux a bit with Gremlins in 1E, but it wasn't as fun and the ruleset felt a bit clunky. M2E has been a ton of fun.
I suggest going with Gremlins, but perhaps try some cross faction stuff (like Neverborn).

Great stuff, especially Hannah. Really nice detail in the eyes. My only critique is there could be a bit more variance in the skintone (shading), and the cape on the 10 Thunders looks a bit chalky...I'm guessing where there was a seam and liquid Greenstuff was used (happens to me too!).

@AngryMojoMade I've been seriously considering trying something new/out of the box with miniature paint styles again. When GW first released their washes, I had a great time painting my Warriors of Chaos army in the shades alone like watercolor. I really like your style here, Catharsix also has a really great style. I'm a big fan of Piet Mondrian, but I'm afraid it would just looking like 80's/90's Rogue Trader style

I'm a big fan of the Impressionists/Post Impressionists, and a lot of what I do winds up being influenced by them. You can see the brush strokes, but I think it works. I'd love to recreate Starry Night on a cape one day, but I need a lot more freehand practice before I can do that.

I finally have a fully painted crew This last Sunday finished my Leveticus crew:
Abominations:
Waifs:
(I blame Re:zero for the blue-haired maid )
Leveticus and Rusty Alice
Rusty Alice's face looks horrible I learnt the hard way how the details on her face were too soft even for a watered down Bugman's glow. All the waifs and Leveticus were painted with a layer paint as basecoat and it worked out much better.
(This was a copy past from the showcase thread, I admit!)

A few more Neverborn, this time Nephilim. I've had the stuff from the starter for a while, so I did the Scion and Blood Wretches. Angel Eyes will be next after I bash out a couple more Gremlins.

Finished some more Neverborn - Stitched Together. I wasn't enthusiastic about painting these at all. They're brown sacs with a few extra details. In fact they're been on my painting desk half finished for ages because I just didn't care enough to finish them. But I've committed to finishing the rest of my Neverborn before I start the Fae, so these finally got done.
