I've come back to make a brief intro post.
Here's everything I did in 2017, enjoy:
Currently I'm not doing much, just buying stuff up to add to my pre-existing mountain of grey. Hopefully I'll get it all done in a flurry of work over the summer.
Original first post
So, first time doing a blog, so bear with me.s
I have decided that this is the best medium to present my hobbying activities and thoughts.
So here it is, the first post, a WIP bunker for my trench guard, who will get a showing when I finish squad one, two guardsmen to go. The highlights for the wings were done with reikland steel then a very thin highlight with leadbelcher to take some of the glare away.
Enjoy, and comment whatever you want.
I'd recommend clicking on each photo for a bigger version (still good quality photo) so you can see the detail.

That looks awesome! How will you make the walls?
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Thanks!
TBH, I'm not entirely sure, but right now I think I'm going to paint the outside as covered in mud, then the inside floorboards dirty metal, the inner walls that black/bronze colour, and have some mud spilled inside, maybe some more footprints and a few blood splatters.
89127
Post by: Matthew
I'm guessing that's Rhinox Hide on the dirt?
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
No, just the texture paint Stirland mud, it's amazing. It has granuels in it to add roughness and give it a sense of it being solid, rather tha the colour on something.
89127
Post by: Matthew
Yeah, I love that paint.

That's a nice looking bunker Really captures the grim darkness of the universe those poor IG have to fight for
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Thanks! So, I've done the painting of the main bunker, but I want to add some stuff. Does it look good and should I stick it in place? So, in no particular order, here are some pics of the finished bunker and the (currently) blue-tacked on extra stuff. The 4 edits were picture trouble.

Post by: Ezra Tyrius
The added stuff looks good, I'm not sure about the placement of the gun though, wouldn't it make more sense if the gun pointed forward instead of to the side?
Where'd you get those sandbags by the way? They look pretty sweet
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Yeah, I guess it would, but then it fills up the centre chink. The sandbags I bought are from a japanese company I think, I found them in hobby craft, I don't know if you have it in Germany. However, I'm sure you can order them offline somewhere. They also do a whole range of similar stuff, from tank traps to oil drums and jerry cans
1
87465
Post by: Ezra Tyrius
Ah yes, good old Tamiya models, haven't seen those in a while
Also, isn't the central chink meant for a gun emplacement to be put there?
(And allow me to find it extremely hilarious that you mixed up the German and Belgian flags )
89127
Post by: Matthew
Ah, Belgium, Germany, New Zeeland same thing. Oh boy, those Tamiya models take you back...
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
I feel terrible now. Please forgive me. Back to hobby, the chink is for a gun, but I'm fairly sure it's meant for a heavy weapons team. Anyway, almost there with the first squad to occupy my defence lines. Also some other stuff I did with Tamiya. Tomorrow I'll probably fix up my Lehman russ eradicator.

87465
Post by: Ezra Tyrius
Now I couldn't blame a tactical genius like Creed for mixing up similar-looking flags
Creed: Ah, the Cadian 250th! We're gonna need you fine gentlemen to beat back these devious renegades!
Trooper: Uh, Sir, we're the Cadian 342nd.
Creed: Wait, what? But you have the same icon and everything! How am I going to tell you all apart?
Trooper: Our badge has a blue and black stripe on it, the 250th has a black and blue one.
Creed:.....
Jokes aside, I guess it depends whether you're going to put a heavy weapons team where the chink is or not
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Maybe it would look better like this, and it won't get in the way of anything?
2
87465
Post by: Ezra Tyrius
That seems like a better solution The heavy weapons squads are looking good too

90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Thanks. The next box on my to do list is revamp my eradicator, and I have started by highlighting all or the turret and right side, adding detail where needed aswell, and I've done my first proper freehand. However, I still need to do the left, the main chassis and dirty up the tracks. Enjoy. (Click on the images for better quality and the edits are for this message and getting the pictures to work)

A model I made for the hunt, requirements are that you start off as a human, Ork or eldar with a pistol and knife, then as you kill bigger and more deadly monsters, you can buy gear in a points system specially designed for the hunt! So I decided to mix camo, Bane, a robot arm, a drum magazine pistol and a bayonet. Here is the result.
4
89127
Post by: Matthew
The Hunt? Please do explain.
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
Just a thing the guy who runs my local GW set up, where everyone brings in a single ork, eldar or human equipped with a close combat weapon and a pistol. Then you all run around the board killing dinosaurs and other beasts, and you get awarded points for killing stuff, which you can upgrade your character with for future hunts. So I chose a strange looking gun with a blade attached that could be anything so I wouldn't have to keep adding things every time I buy a new weapon. The robot arm and bane faceplate were just for coolness.

Monster Hunter meets WH40k? Sounds fun
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
The first hunt went well, I managed to inflict exactly 0 wounds on any other hunter or the dionosaurs. And i had a sniper rifle, which at the time was the best gun on the table.
Anyway, the guy wants us to have stuff actually represented on our models, so i built this as a sniper rifle so i can keep on using this model rather than one of my actual guard snipers.

Yes, it is the one with multimeltas.
Also, I made a board for a game I invented an hour ago, I'll paint it up over the weekend probably.
Simple game
Everyone choose a piece.
Agree teams, two teams of two
Roll for who goes first.
The team going first places their pieces on their table edge, then the team going second places their paces
Movement of two squares a turn. If you can't place your peice on the square, it is impassable.
Shoot after movement, to shoot roll a dice, 5 or 6 is a hit, each player dies when they are hit three times
Range of up to two squares in straight lines vertically and horizontally, so no diagonal shots.
Once all members of a team have moved and shot if they want, their turn ends, and it is the other team's turn.
Repeat until one team is eliminated.

Yet another period of almost no activity has occurred. However, today was the local GW's birthday. As part of the celebrations there was a speed painting contest where everyone was given one brush (I ended up with an old standard) and one clip together marine pre-sprayed black. Exactly one hour later the models were handed in and judged. I came first out of the sixteen entries, much to my surprise. My prize, the old warhammer fantasy mini starter with five high elf sea guard, a brush and eight paints. For a competition I hadn't even planned on entering, I'd say a £22.50 box for free isn't too bad.

Eventually I'll get round to both. I've taken a very long hiatus from anything wargaming, but I'm back and better than ever (maybe). I decided to restart with Solar Lord Macharius, because it doesn't get more Guard than him (also I wanted to get at least one limited rerun model). I've been having problems getting the superglue to bind his cloak to his back properly. I think I've fixed it for good now, but each time I have to reapply glue it gets harder to fix a break. I'm really worried about messing up the process of superglueing him to his base, so if you have any alternative ways, that'd be greatly appreciated. (The photos were taken with a phone, so they aren't the best.)

Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
So I impulse bought a start collecting box of space marines, I had a dreadnought lying around from a friend and I saw a cool marines army, so marines it was.
Then I took a look through the internet to find a chapter that looked cool/had interesting fluff. So the Raptors are 2nd founding (Raven Guard successors) who have olive drab armour and use stealth, hit and run tactics and try to complete objectives at minimal cost, as opposed to running at the enemy in bright coloured armour while yelling about how glorious the Emps is. Forge world produce some rhino doors for the chapter, which I will probably never buy because if you use them for one rhino, you have to use them fro all rhinos. Forge world also gave the chapter master some cool rules and their chapter tactics are the same as the Raven Guard, pules if any unit stays still during the movement phase all bolters, boolt pistols and combi-bolters become heavy 1 rending.
Tbh, I've quite enjoyed the switch from Guard and Tau, and I don't think I'll add to them for a long time. Not only do I like painting the models, I feel like I have more direction with the SM. I can create a company (over time of course) and I know that that entails, 6 tactical squads, 2 devastators, 2 assault, etc, etc, whereas I never knew what I was doing next with the Tau and Guard.
I finished the tactical squad, 4th squad 4th company, and that dreadnought I got from a friend (it's the one from black reach). I can't work out how to take images uploaded to the gallery and embed them in my post, probably because the tutorial is almost a decade old, so I'll do the usual attach all images at the end to maintain some quality. If you want, there are decent quality (all taken on an iPad, so...) versions in my gallery.
([img] url ['/img] for the gallery uploads just looks awful)
All the raptor chapter symbols were done by hand, leading to them all looking slightly different. The dreadnought was sprayed black before it got sprayed caliban green and then basecoated again with castellan green, in addition to space wolf bitz that had been glued on being removed, so the model has lost some here and there.

Post by: brushcommando
Excellent work! I really love the freehand chapter symbols, especially the outlined one on the dread. BTW if you want to add the gallery upload images in your post it's actually not that bad. If you look at your image in the gallery, there should be a "Share this Image" box in the lower right-hand part of the screen. There will be a massive amount of text in the one labeled "Forums" which you can copy and paste right into your forum post. Hope that helps.
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
I'd had a four pack of red bull over the evening, it doesn't help steady your hands, but it does keep you awake to finish what you're doing. I tried that, or at least I think I did for the images, I'll try again next time I upload. Thanks for all C&C.
There should be some assault marines joining the ranks soon, but the return of school means all painting will slow down. I'm also thinking of getting the Kill Team box set, because you save £15 on a tac marine squad and one of the new fire warrior squads (new to me), and you get the kill team rules.
Seems like a good buy to me, I might even get two when I assemble the funds.
Edit: Just checked the money I got from relatives over Christmas, I am £5 off getting 2 kill team boxes. Might even make some money back off selling one £30 FW squad for £20 on ebay.
90487
Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
First off, thanks brushcommando, I've got the images working from the gallery. The assault marines are progressing, albeit slowly. I've magnetised the jump and power packs, thanks to my recent purchase of the drill GW sell (I've also drilled gun barrels on all the previous marines and dreads).
Not only has the drill allowed me to magnetise, I can also add pins to models to help hold them together. A few years ago, I won a prize draw for some angry marines and got a forge world chaplain. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSx1HB8KBGw )
However, on its trip across the seas the model broke at the point where the base connects to the foot and in the middle of the crozarius. At the time I didn't really care because I didn't have any desire to play SM and I had no way of fixing him (super glue just wasn't working on its own).
Now though, I've been able to use pins, a tiny bit of green stuff and superglue to rectify the breaks. I also stuck his slotted 22mm base for a normal 32mm SM base, then added green stuff and a bunch of texture paint to make it look like he's on a mound.
The model and base still need a bit of work, but that will come in the future.

Post by: CREEEEEEEEED
I noticed the pic heavy posts were getting long, so I've tried my hand at using powerpoint and screencapture to mash them together.
I tried to salvage a rhino a friend gave me. The model couldn't be saved, too much damage done, glue scarring, missing track pieces, etc, but I tried painting it anyway as a test for future vehicles. I think I'm gonna stick to a solid green in future.
As for the assault marine I finished so I'd know what my colour scheme was for the others, I tried highlighting with death world forest. I'm not sure I like how he turned out, but that might be because my hands were shaking the whole time, which made him a bitch to paint, and I kept nudging the transfers by accident, which combined made the activity I do to relax far and away the most stressful thing that has happened in the last few days.
I'll stick with the highlights, but I'm having conflicting thoughts about it when compared to my less technique-strong (patented term rights go to Creed) but cleaner tactical marines. I've included a comparison.
Maybe it's because I typed raptors into gallery search and found lots of people who've done this chapter before me and did a far better job than I've been doing so far, which such wonders as: clean highlights, really good weathering effects, osl, blending, proper basing, shading that isn't just 'apply agrax earthshade' (would be my patent if it wasn't already in the public domain), cracks in power armour, and a whole host of other techniques I will never add to my repertoire.
But hey, at least I can achieve a standard that is acceptable on the table top.

Camouflage Rhino for the win! I had a rogue trader original rhino box that had a bunch of different camo schemes laid out on it. Reminds me of that. Side note: fluffwise do you know if the raptors were part of the badab war?

Apparently four companies, headed by the chapter master (who has rules but no model), were present and acted as mobile reserves for two years before they lost so many marines that they had to pull out from the badab war.

Cool, thanks for the info. I just asked because camo space marines immediately bring badab to mind, probably because of Gitsplitta and his Mantis Warriors. It would be interesting to see some camo patterns on the actual marines if you're ever feeling adventurous.

Well if you go to page three of this very plog you'll see I have 'experience' (one marine done in a one hour speed paint) in that very field. I'm definitely going to for the scouts, and I'll think about adding it to the odd tactical marine for variation.

Army shot looks good. I don't know if I've said it before, but I really like the venerable dreadnought. As for the white background, I do think it looks better than before, but the first shot with the whole army works a lot better than the individual squad shots. Did you change something in your technique between the two?

Thanks regards the dread, and I moved my one lamp further away and used my phone to take the pictures with the phone torch to see if that worked better.

The trick is to neglect what you should be doing instead of painting.
Don't worry, There is something of worth in this post. I kitbashed a Lias Issodon model from some space wolf and assault marine parts. I plan to have a diorama where he's been under some camo blanket as some chaos marines patrol the area. Then once they pass him he rises up and point blank blows their brains out from behind. This has happened mainly because I don't want to paint jump packs but I do want to do hobby.
And using some raptors to roughly sketch out the positioning:

That diorama reminds me of a "because I'm Batman!" moment.

Never let it be said that I was keen on finishing projects before starting new ones. To be fair, I have done about half the painting required on the four remaining jump packs. I'll try and finish them before the weekend, when I'll buy the crap ton of paints I need for some pre-heresy Thousand Sons goodness.

I don't know if you can see it, but the red isn't really flat, even though it's two thin coats. Either Duncan Rhodes lied to me to make me buy mephiston red spray, or I'm doing something wrong.

Getting paint to go on smooth is really tricky sometimes. One thing I've found that helps some times is thinning it with a little bit of glaze medium as opposed to water. But honestly, they don't look bad at all. I'm sure it will start to look more in line with what you're wanting as you add the other colors to the mix.

Thanks, I've gotten over it and lowered my standards in accordance with my actual skill. I painted the evil sun scarlet highlight for one marine today, which took me 1/2 an hour.
I'm not sure why I'm putting this on my painting blog of all places, but hey, where better to vent than somewhere I basically run?
Any way, yesterday I came out to my parents (I'm bisexual). I wasn't expecting them to take it well, and they didn't, they seem extremely upset. However, to their credit they've not been dicks about it, and maybe in a few years they'll be ok with it.
As I said, not sure why I'm putting this here, just something I feel like doing.

So as far as painting goes, the Raptors got a few compliments on Saturday. The store manager said I'd really improved since he first met me 4 years ago. Sadly though, not every model I fielded was painted, the lias issodon model and the bikers were gloriously grey.
I don't remember everything, and my picture taking was quite spotty, but hopefully I can form a coherent narrative.
So mission 1, three separate two board battlefields, each representing a path in the webway. You could jump between the battlefields using portals at each end.
On each battlefield 750 points faced off, imperial vs harlequins/craftworld eldar and a member of the imperial and elder triumvirate for each team on each board (the triumvirates didn't count towards points). On the left board, was one leviathan dread (so 315 points vs 750) and crawl vs an assortment of clowns, their skimmers and the visarch. On the middle board, Skitarri and Celestine vs essentially the same thing (Ynnead was in reserves). On the right board, raptors and greyfax (by far the worst of the six characters) vs harlequin jetbikes, a wraithlord, some clowns in a clown skimmer, a shadowseer, and Yvrain.
On the left and right battlefields, the Imperials were going first, the elder went first in the middle. there were two imperial players (me and one other) and one elder player. It got confusing pretty quick, but we managed to finish the game. Each triumvirate member was worth 2 or 3 victory points, and each battlefield was worth 3 vps at the end.
This will mostly focus on the raptors board.
Now I didn't take photos for the first turn, but basically the bikes and assault squad with chaplain surged forwards and got wiped out in assault (The chaplain lived to hold up a skyweaver unit in the left building for thee turns and even killed one.)
Complete with growing dead pile.
Suddenly, due to elder deathmagicbullshit (stormsurge I think it's called),Ynnead turned up once the bikes died.
I decided to pretend Ynnead actually wasn't there, and used the dreads and tactical marines to shoot a clown unit to death, and knocked Yvrain down to one wound, so she ran and hid behind a building. Then it was elder turn two on the raptors board (the mechanicum were busy being murked) and Ynnedad decided to appear on the middle board to murk the mechanicum some more, rather than face the dreads.
Somewhere in all this the venerable dread killed the shadowseer with a shot from the plasma cannon. There was a growing elder dead pile too, thanks to the raptors and leviathan.
An overview shot of all three tables.
On the left board, I took over the leviathan for a bit and charged a skimmer on turn two, killing it. He then turned around on turn three and shot the Visarch with his storm cannon. All the named characterness in the universe couldn't save him from six strength 7 ap 3 shots.
Turn three, the wraithlord (who'd been duelling with the venerable dread for a while at range) decided enough was enough and charged, taking a hull point off brother Augustus, as I'm naming the venerable dread. I imagine what happened next was Augustus just reached out and grabbed the wraithlord's chest, then squeezed until it was dead. Anyway, dice were rolled and the wraithlord kicked the bucket.
Sadly the skyweavers finished off the chaplain. I like to think he was telling them to feth off with his last, angry breath. You may notice a sneaky thousand son standing in as a raptor marine sergeant. Are we sure he isn't alpharius?
The death of the wraithlord meant Ynnead got to turn up again as the skyweavers consolidated into a position where they could say hello to greyfax. Celestine abandoned the middle board (now basically empty of imperial forces) and come to the last important board (the board with the leviathan was fast running out of elder).
Sadly, through a combination of shooting, eldar magiks and assault, the board was very quickly rid of raptors and greyfax, and only the captain was left.
But not all hope was lost. The last Harlequin skimmer on the left board was trying to play ring around the roses (bastion) with the leviathan, who wasn't interested in playing.
HERE'S JOHNNY
And so the left board was made Imperial, the middle board was elder, both triumvirates were a member down, and it was too late for any models not already near a portal to start moving to the right battlefield last fight that would decide the game. Celestine with bodyguards, a dunecrawler who'd ran from the middle board and a captain vs Yvrain on one hp, Ynnead and some skyweavers.
The captain died.
Jain Zar and some banshees turn up.
Throughout the game empiric storm cards had been in effect. Effectively two per turn, and guess which card turns up for this final and most epic of fights.
The Geminae Superia mysteriously disappear, some say due to being shot with no invulnerable saves.
The dunecrawler gets wrecked.
In the end, Celestine gets ganked and dies in assault, deciding the game 2-1 in board control to the elder and 2-1 in triumvirate kills.
The raptors actually performed quite well, but the dreadnoughts did all the heavy lifting. The tac marines and greyfax did nothing, and the assault marines got out initiatived. The loss of the bikes was my fault, I should have held them back for later rather than charging into shuriken cannon fire.
We dispersed for lunch then came back for game two, which I'll upload later.

This just makes me more excited for my FLGS's gathering storm "finale", where everyone with Eldar and Imperium (on one side) and Chaos on the other is invited to bring a 1000p list and we'll play an apocalypse battle with everyone's army combined. I'm wondering if I should take my RG ( HH actually, but the minis will work as 40k) or my space marine/inquisition army (with Tau allies, don't ask) who are MUCH weaker (lots of stern Guard and vanguard cause I like the minis). Technically I could also bring my Eldar, but then I wouldn't be able to get a good list (I only have a bout 1000p painted).
Love the batrep, can't wait to see more!

Thanks Ember.
I finally finished the MKIII marines. I'm happy with how they turned out (even the crest, and I've come to terms with the sword), which is good, because I've probably spend upwards of eight hours on them.
It was hard to get a good photo of them, so like most photos I used Dakka's autofilter. If you go to the image in the gallery and zoom in it's good resolution.
I'll do the second batrep tomorrow, and the captain in terminator armour will be next to grace the desk. (I might finish up the jumppacks first.)

So after lunch, we regrouped, added models until we had 13,000 points, and went at it again.
We played a mission in a city (The terrain definitely favoured the assault heavy army of our opponents over our own shooty armies.) Where the imperium got 18" deployment and went second, the chaos side got 12" deployment and went first. Now the attack was supposed to be led by abaddon. But the chaos guy bailed, and a guy who was just there managed to conjure 1,000 points or so of deathwatch to stand in for the chaos side, with a watchmaster as abaddon. And the eldar were there with 1,600 points. As allies to corrupted deathwatch, fighting space marines, guardmen and skitarii on one of the most terrain heavy 40k boards I've ever seen. While both triumvurates appeared for free.
It was a lot of fun.
Each player got a warmaster (normal 1VP), and each side got an overall warmaster, ynnead and Celestine (3VPs).
Each triumvirate member was worth an extra VP. I think it was kill points, I'm not sure.
So here's the Imperial deployment.
Celestine and the bodyguards had to turn up turn three as deepstrike without scattering. We attached the angry chaplain and the assault marines to make a mini death star of turn three doom. You'll see how well that goes later.
Here's the enemy deployment, a lot of deathwatch and a corvus blackstar started in reserve with Ynnead.
So I put Greyfax in a squad of veterans. Then during turn one the elder player asked if she was in the quad. Evil me said no, thinking "ha, now she can use the guardmen as meatshileds' which was tactiucally a poor decision, because he then said, "ok, I'll just shoot her."
Luckily, a guy (More on him at the end) who was there to watch and because for certain people the GW shop is effectively a community centre, leaped to my rescue, "No, say she's in the unit!" And the edar player contested it briefly, before the bystander pointed out she was within an inch of the unit, and as an independent character she had to be in the unit. So the elder player slaughtered most of the vets, but she lived to see another turn.
Super sneaky skyweavers then blew up a basilisk. To save saying "The basilisks did nothing" each turn, they were worthless, they couldn't hit half the board due to terrain denying LoS (which they need within 36") and missing whenever they could shoot. So not a terrible loss.
A bit more shooting left Greyfax a bit on her own, and killed a biker. Something put a hull point on the venerable dread.
Cue Greyfax running behind a building and the venerable dread and bikers covering her retreat and putting wounds on the skyweavers.
The tank commander in his eradicator did nothing, but his accompanying executioner singlehandedly killed 5 deathwatch termies and 4 or 5 deathwatch marines, leaving only three left.
Turn two and the elder trickery gets ridiculous. The bikes run away and the venerable gets compromised.
The venerable dread looses another hull point to the clown skimmer, and clowns and banshees swarm greyfax, 5 tacticals and the captain, who challenges the troupe master.
It doesn't go too well for the imperials, and the enemy get 4VPs.
Brother Augustus is not pleased and using his plasma cannon and heavy flamer kills all the clowns except the troupe master. Who he then charges and kicks so hard in the balls the troupe master dies. (He killed him with a hammer of wrath hit)
Crawl gets charged, and using some special thingy, gets 2d6 hits at initiative step 10. He gets 12 hits.
Of which four wound. Also in this image you can see the ruststalkers who avenge the basilisk and kill the skyweavers. (After my mechanicum ally said repeadedly "There's nothing to protect your basilisks" We had to point out to him that most of his army could very easily help, rather than run to my side of the board.
And only two go through. ( DW, he wins later)
Along the way, the three deathwatch marines kill another 5 man tac squad, the watch master and a bunch of deathwatch turn up, and the banshees are joined by the triumvirate and jainzar.
The deathwatch blow up the tank commander. Here he can be seen getting revenge with his 6" blast radius. (It killed a guy with a frag cannon.)
Brother Augustus is killed by a clown skimmer from behind. No honour with these types. Brother Tiberius(the normal dread) was charged earlier by the wraithlord. They both attacked at initiative step , and killed each other. How poetic. (No picture, sorry.)
The elder assault deathstar bullshitimus maximus kills the executioner.
For this whole period, the skitarii have been dying in droves. But don't worry, Imperial turn three is here, and so's Celestine!
She uses her one time orbital strike and kills most of the deathwatch and the watchmaster, yay!
And gets charged next turn by the remains of the deathwatch, the banshees, jainzar, a shadowseer, and the whole elder triumvirate.
The assault marines die before doing anything, as does the chaplain, who gets one hit in. Over the course of a few turns Celestine and her bodyguards get slapped around until they die (Jainzar kept stealing her weapon) and the game ends in a near tabling (We called it once Celestine diesd because it was just the basilisk, Crawl and maybe the ruststalkers left).
Here's one last picture of the corvus hovering over the last mechanicum unit to die.
All in all, a good game with some great moments. The IG performed terribly, partly because there was no synergy between the IG units themselves or with the Raptors who they were allied with. Five man tac squads are worthless. I think I probably split up my power too much. But we weren't there to WAAC, we were there for fun and winning if possible. It'sgood we called it when we did because, to everyone's amazement, there was only ten minutes left until the store's closing time, and as nice as the store manager is, he wanted to go home.
Regarding the bystander mentioned earlier, he spent most of the second half of the game saying "there's no such thing as fairies" and trying to convince the elder player that his units weren't there.
It also turns out that he recently bought 36 vindicators off the webstore, to run in squad of three as three formations of 12. Once we discussed it, we realised how terribly broken it was. And he owns an airbrush, so painting them won't take him too long either. I don't think he intends them to see the light of day except for serious tourneys.

So the way I envision it is that this is the 4th in maybe 920.M41, shortly after the raptors were pulled out of the Badab war due to heavy casualties. The predator 'Numina's will' has a small skull for every Badab army vehicle it killed and one large skull to represent killing a renegade astartes predator. That's also why it's in urban camo whereas the rest have switched back to the standard olive drab, it's not been repainted yet. What questions that raises when they fight say, guilliman or Magnus, who only came back to the materium in 999.M41, are best left unasked.

The whole free gear with PL thing is making me very conflicted. I’m normally very stingy with upgrades, being a firm believer in "boys before toys”. I’d rather have more boots on the ground then a few tricked out ones. And my collection reflects that. (with a few exceptions like my plasma pistol/powerfist assault sarge) But now the temptation to gear everyone up to the gills, just for PL games is quite strong.
Because as you say, why not thunder hammers?
Nice work on the OSL. Might be a little bright, but that’s what overcharging will get you. Very impressive to get that done with a fuzzy stick. Most OSL is airbrushed. Or done by people who have sold their souls to fell powers for painting talent.

Go 6mm. I just bought 200 romans for 10 euros. Problem is I can't proxy them...
A tau suit? I'm looking forward to this

Sadly the tau stuff is just to magnetise and add to my existing weapons pool.

Almost a whole two months later and all I've done is get a few more stages done on the hellblasters. What can ya do, A-level year and all that.
Although whilst I'm not hobbying or even wasting time playing vidya games I'm still managing to do barely any work and I worry myself. But not enough to do proper work.
Anyway, I was round at a friend's today and for £40 he gave me everything he had, Black Reach, Dark Vengeance, a box of tacticals (unopened), 15 or so paints and five sniper scouts.
Let's just break that down price-wise
The actually usable stuff
2x tacticals £50
1x scout snipers £15
1x Dreadnought £28
1x captain £18
1x terminators £28
1x Librarian £18
A total of £157 RRP for £40, a pretty nice saving of £117.
However, to quote the eternal Billy Mays, "But wait, there's more!"
There's another three forces to be sold off.
20 ork boyz, 5 nobz and a warboss. £20 on ebay.
20 cultists, 5 chosen and a chaos lord. £20 on ebay.
15 DA tacticals, a DA captain, 3 ravenwing and 5 deathwing terminators. £25 on ebay.
So in reality I got all that space marine goodness for a net £15 gain, probably eaten up by postage, balancing it out to a free £157 RRP.
Not too shabby.
Plus I have another friend nearby willing to sell a bunch of stuff, including but not limited to a stormraven and the 2nd edition starter set, although I don't know how much of that is intact.
So whilst I might not be painting much, the 4th are growing.
Edit: most are still grey but some of the models are painted and need stripping, I'd appreciate advice on how to properly go about that.

Quickest way to strip is Isopropanol Alcohol/ rubbing alcohol, get it from the chemists. Old tooth brush and scrub them. Wear gloves.
Alternative is old fashioned brown Dettol, soak your models overnight in a plastic tub of Dettol and then brush to old paint off. Make sure you get all the paint off before you wash them under the tap.
The Iso method is best, it is quick and relatively painless, the Dettol works but I find a pain in the butt.
Nice haul. Well done.

Use alcohol. It can take anywhere from 1 hour to 5 minutes.

Thanks for the advice.
Through the use of my bitz box and a few old marines I had lying around I've managed to turn those 20 tacticals into 30, I just need 8 more shoulder pads and a lot of 32mm bases.
Theat means the 4th has 5/6 of its line units, 4 tacticals and 1 intercessor. I think I might go for a 2nd intercessor squad to finish it off.

I've been working on the captain for the 4th, finally. I think it's going well, I've done the highlighting for the armour and the black of the gun and grenade harness, just the metal to highlight and all the tubing, then cleanup, washes, eyes and finally transfers. Maybe even a little blood for the blood god and typhus corrosion.

So I've been doing some thinking about the bases. Somewhere on dakka there was a discussion about clear bases, and someone mentioned how they dislike resin bases because they can't stand up on anything that isn't flat. It'd be a great shame to tack another £10 onto every already expensive enough unit to only have them be useless on most boards.
I think I'm gonna have to snap the tau guys from the urban resin bases and put them on basic plastic bases, then go though the terrible hassle of making urban bases with sand and paints. I can still use the bases for kill teams or anything like that, so it's not money wasted. I dunno, I think I just got a bit over-hyped at the idea of having a very distinctive force with custom bases on top of the conversions.
In other news I've been snapping things up on ebay, including a few metal OOP things for the tau and I got a metal Master of recruitment, who might end up as my Lias Issodon until I get around to actually building one in plastic. I auction sniped the Games Day 1999 Anghkor Prok (that model is older than me), and got a £50 birthday present to myself, but I'll keep that a surprise. Definitely worth selling off all my old and terribly painted guard (although I kept the ones with sentimental value).

Great job on the bay finds. It's kinda weird when minis are older than you (almost my entire elf army is from the eighties, so nearly 20 years older than me...).
If you're worried about your resin bases, you can use a razor saw to remove the top of it and the glue it on to a GW plastic one, although that might actually be more difficult than making new ones... good luck!

Great theme for your Tau Firewarriors.
Have you thought about matching shoulder pads for the other shoulders. Really would capture that Ran theme. I may be able to help with more shoulder pads. If interested just fire me a PM.
Cheers,
CB

So I'll be making my grand return to painting on the 19th. I've accumulated almost 200 minis in the year of absence/low level painting. I'm gonna bash all the raptors minis, around 150, out in just 8 weeks, and I'll even start a showcase thread for it. So there's that.
Also, prompted by the last chance to buy orgy going on at FW, I've now got a ton of upgrades, 2 dreads and a command set. When they arrived today I think I was the most excited I've been for a few months. This excitement was quickly dampened by the 20 minutes it took to wash and clean the autocannon arms and wash the MKIV ironclad. But it's all still very sexy, and I'm looking forward to the satisfaction of lining up almost an entire company of marines.
Also FW sent me a cool postcard, which I appreciated. Not that I can write in it, because there's a big forgeworld sticker stuck inside, but its the thought that counts.

I spent 8 hours today on all this. Assembling FW is a real pain, but he does look so cool. And I was missing an arm joint, which they were kind enough to offer a replacement for when I emailed with proof of purchase. Then putting on the base size converters took an hour because almost none of them fit properly so you have to use liquid greenstuff to fill the gaps. But it's all done. Played my first game in forever yesterday, 6 way with 30 playing each. That'll get you 10 vanguard vets, a terminator captain, a Lieutenant and 5 intercessors. Funnily enough, I didn't do much killing. Plus I'm very excited to paint this chaplain.
(there's still another 30 guys to strip and spray)

Another brother is added to the fold, and what a sexy looking brother he is, in a murdery sort of way.
Also watching WILTY whilst building dreadnoughts does make the experience a lot more enjoyable, although having body shaking laughter while holding super glue or a hobby knife may not be the best thing to do.

I spent about three hours just putting the Death World Forest layer on these 20 scouts, plus the black on 2 of them. One guy had a massive gap between his arm and torso, fixed it with green stuff so I had to put him on hold to get a quick spray tomorrow.
I looked at my current scouts and thought it was a little weird that they have camouflage clothing over their legs and arms, but their torsos are standard raptors OD Green, which sort of negates the effect. So I've done 10 of the 20 in death world forest all over the clothing and the armour, leaving the right shoulder for the 10th company black. So now I've justified the fluff as having those 10 fully equipped, and the ones in standard green carapace have taken damage to their original camouflaged carapace as the campaign has worn on, and have had to get a new set from the armoury without time to properly prepare the armour for the current war zone.
I'm gonna try and finish them by the end of Saturday for the dakka dakka unofficial painting challenge, but if I could finish them by Thursday afternoon for the local GW's gaming night that'd be even better.
Also did a little freehand sergeant marking.
