Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter - The Update Thread @ 2015/05/05 23:36:56

Post by: lasgunpacker

Added July 7:
KS is now live

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-3-the-search-for-mr-bones

https://ks.reapermini.com/bones3/login

Surprised not to see this here already, but Reaper Miniatures will be launching a Bones 3 Kickstarter in early June. (Mod Edit: Now pushed back slightly, date TBD, see this post).

Some of the new figures were shown at Reapercon 2015 (which I did not attend) and include a 28mm scale not Tiamat.

Some pictures (again, not mine)

So who is going to get into this one? I have passed on the first two (and kicked myself afterwards), but it might be time to get into my first kickstarter...

Man, here's hoping they do a set that focuses on terrain. That's all I really want from from them now, but boy do I want it!

Well, I missed the first two, but with more active RPG-ing, I might jump on #3

There is a Stonehenge type terrain piece in the preview case, so maybe...

I noticed there is something else in green that could be terrain too, but upon closer inspection realized it is part of the Tiamat set.

Which, holy balls, that dragon goddess is huge!

I'm assuming that that huuuge multi-headed dragon is a 3-up rather than actual size, but holy hand grendades that thing is însane!

I dunno, Tiamat is supposed to be the literal goddess that spawns dragons, so that might be an actual size sort of thing. There are some really big Bones kits out there as is, so I could see them doing this.

There was mention on the Reaper forums that it may need to be made smaller in the end, but that does seem to be the intended size!

I have to say I'm having trouble loving the bones. Got my first few and while the price and detail can't be beat, I have issues with cleaning the mold lines without leaving a mess. I'm also not sure the thin bits will ever really work out, though I haven't tried straitening them with hot water yet.

Nice to see that the Lovecraftian Gravewailer will be Bonsified; i've had my eye on the metal one for awhile, but prefer plastic. The not-Shub-Niggurath looks like it could be promising, too, but I'll need a clearer shot of it to be sure.

Hopefully you won't have to buy into the fantasy bread-and-butter stuff to make this KS worthwhile, as that's not my genre.

Generally things straighten pretty well with hot water, in my experience.

I can see people being a bit soured on Bones just from the flying rodent gak insane amount of models they have. And cleaning is a bit irritating on many models. I didn't get much other than paint and Dragons Don't Share last time because I have just so... many... bones that I will not be painting for a long time.

Once my daughter can hold a brush and model without trying to eat them, it is on!

A lot of what I got in the first one droop no matter how often they were straightened.
Kickstarter 2 I bought a lot less, having to buy a "set" to get a few I wanted was a bit crap.
I'd go in for a big beastie or some terrain as they tend to be pretty solid and dont loose detail.
I do love metal and resin reaper stuff though and always will.

People were swearing up and down Reaper said no more bones KS. I thought.. NAH.. that would be freakin crazy right? These guys made a TON of cash off of this so it'd be bonkers to ignore it.

My only gripe is that actual retail is creeping up on these so if you do miss it and want the models at retail, the savings are not quite as substantial.

There's goes all my shopping expenditures for the rest of the spring.

I am so sold on this. Lots of were- people spotted- boars, GATORS, bears...

My kids love Bones. I've got assorted boxes of stuff, they just pull it out, make a scene with board game tiles and scenery, and just go do their thang.

Daughter already wants the "shopping cart."

My one wish would be to see some Bones trees.

Not sure. If they are not interested in distributing anywhere outside of the US, then:

1) The shipping charges will be even more bonkers than last time. I ended up paying $193 for my base $100 pledge, and the US export shipping situation has only worsened since then.

2) The pound is weaker than it has been for quite a while. Suddenly these "ultra-cheap" models aren't so much anymore.

3) It is almost impossible to buy them retail in the UK, and where you can, it's essentially a £=$ scenario, making them actually more expensive than equivalent metals in many cases.

Separately from that, I did not like how Bones II was run. I thought that the core pledge was a quite malnourished and variable in quality, at the expense of $50 add-ons which contained such strange mixes of stuff that I didn't want a single one. I was quite impressed by Dragons Don't Share though. In general, the larger stuff is of less interest since:

1) the lower detail level becomes very apparent at larger scales, possibly because they have to use more rigid plastic - you feel like you're painting a child's toy at points.

2) I have no effective storage solution for anything that large. It is going to either sit in a giant box, or get dusty or damaged.

I still have so many unpainted models from the first two that I'll almost certainly never paint, but.....

For the big models this material is fantastic, the undead dragons from the first kickstarter are the centre pieces of my fantasy army. Dragons don't share from the second is just awesome. That Tiamat, so need.

I just hope it is run better than the second one, there were some models in the expansions that I wanted but couldn't justify the $50 add-on.

Also wish Reaper would sort out a UK distributer, as there just isn't a good way to get hold of them over here.

Reaper forum posters said to get rid of mold lines, you can use sanding needles. I use a jeweler's engraving pen, an X-Acto knife, and jeweler's files, myself.

What is is with distributors, anyway? Reaper said they were dissatisfied with the retailer-distributor model, which would cherry pick which products to carry, effectively making your consumer choices for you. Internationals should be able to get *some* Bones. Terrain seems to be selling particularly well on MM...

Pretty much the same for me - the smaller figures just aren't worth the time it takes to get them ready to paint, or really even the time it takes to paint them.

See above!

BONES is really, really cheap - especially in the KS.

But when 'cheap' is almost the 'best' thing about them, well...

I wonder if people that are quicker, less precise painters like Bones more?

The smaller figs are... semi worth it, IMO. They make great knock around figs for RPGs, which is more or less the exact niche their targetting.

The bigger stuff is a different story. I think that the material does well with larger models, the detail stays fine, and the ease of assembly plus very low cost makes them attractive for monsters and other larger models.

I have had excellent results using an X-Acto knife to slice, not scrape, mold lines off.

The material is flexible and elastic enough that scraping can cause little ridges. But slicing works fine.

Could another issue be when you have figures designed for the material versus old molds repurposed into Bones?

I've had a few mushy faced figures, but my Bones 2 stuff wasn't too bad that I've painted so far, especially so far figures designed with the material in mind.

I'm not a great painter though, so maybe that's why I'm happy with it?

Same here.

I went all out on Bones 1, and pretty heavily on Bones 2.

I wasn't buying them for award winning display pieces to show off my painting skills.

I was buying them to give myself a much larger pool of monsters and heroes to throw on my Pathfinder games.

If you are looking for super-detailed models to paint to a high standard, buy the metals, or go elsewhere for your models. Bones can be painted pretty well, but it's harder to do than on models in another medium.

If you are looking for cheap, fairly tough gaming minis that you can incidentally paint, Bones is great.

And for that they are awesome - aside from a few cases of flipper fingers and faceless menaces, I am happy with the Bones.

And in the case of the big figures it goes far beyond 'happy' and well into 'ecstatic'.

I backed one and two and I didn't have any casting issues. Some of the thinner figures, mostly the skeletons, were a little warped, but the big stuff was all fine.

That's mostly what sold me on bones is the big stuff. In metal it's just too expensive to justify buying for a RPG game. Producing it in Bones Material brings it down to affordable, and the Kickstarter brings them down to kicking your self if you don't buy it prices.

During Bones 2 they did say they had no plans for a Bones 3 any time soon, and that future KS would be more focused around particular lines (fantasy, Scifi, terrain, dragons, etc..) Maybe plans changed.

I did notice that they seem to have to a hard time keeping the more popular ealier Bones items in stock. Miniatures Market, who offers Bones at a discount in the US, never seems to have the models I want in stock, although they have just added a bunch of the season 2 stuff to pre-order (T.A.R.D.I.S. models all gone already)

I'm liking the golems too.

That underwater one with the starfish arms and coral head is kind of funky.

That graveyard one though! Crazy.

I'm hoping for all sorts of levels of crazy. Crazy sculpts, crazy deals...

I wonder if we'll see expansion boxes again, or if it'll just be a core pledge and add ons. Have Reaper ever said how the expansion experiment played out? I'm guessing it didn't do as well as planned. I'd rather just have the option of buying the specific pieces I want instead of huge bundles where I want 2 or 3 things, and the rest I'm indifferent about. The smaller bundles like the giants or the demons were more what I hope to see more of this time around.

Of course I've already started cherry picking items from the expansion boxes I didn't get...

What grit is good for those sanding needles? Is 150 too coarse? I use the slice method on Bones, along with some micro files, but I am looking for a better solution. (Plus I think it would help with PVC too).

Yeah, they make good faceless mooks. I got the orc pack from the first one (20 orcs for $25) and did just a basic tabletop on those. I find I can knock bones out quickly - the fact that I paid so little for them tends to make me feel better about doing just an average job, and I fuss less over each one.

The big stuff is awesome. I saw liked the new ogres, but at a $20 a pop, who can afford them? In D&D you fight a group of ogres, so its good to see they will be bones-ified.

Yep told her that you choose wave shipping since it was cheaper like that and you care about house budget.
I would like to back this one if they find some EU distributor since shipping and taxes kinda kill the cheap/affordable part of bones.
And question for you previous backers: is that bones material suitable for conversions and how does it mash with other materials like "normal" plastic, resin even metal?

Very suitable. It's a vinyl-ish plastic, easy to cut.

If you're going after display-level stuff, buy metals individually. Heck, Reaper has plenty of metals to choose from.

Yep, it works fine. Weapon/hand/head swaps are all easy, as it cuts very cleanly with a sharp blade, and being light, is easy to balance. You can also heat the minis in hot water, bend them slightly, and dunk them in cold water to set them in a new pose (also handy for straightening any bent components).

It's great stuff, I just wish it were easier to get in the UK at decent prices.

For people who are collecting miniatures, Bones is on the fence, but for populating RPG dungeons, bones has been a gamechanger. Considering some DMs use abstract items for campaigns, having literally all the common monsters in cheap form is huge for gamers.

Miniature people may Poo-poo, but it is really nice when you need a special monster for a session and you can get them in bones for 3-4$ opposed to 15$.

They are 'knock around' figures. They can be painted easily, look good on a table, can be stored in a shoebox and elevate a D&D game. But for miniature gamers, who are into the painting of minis and want excellence, they want metal versions... and I get that.

I am excited to see what comes of it.

they're a very hard plastic, more like sheet styrene than soft bones stuff.

they also come with tops and bottoms! The inside is blank (not even textured) but could be detailed if you want.

Fella, Spirit Games in Burton offers a whole host of them for very reasonable retail, and what they don't have, they can get in very easily. Unfortunately their website is a heinous eyesore, but it's well worth visiting in person, and the shop staff are some of the nicest around.

There's also Miniature Heroes that I will abstain from voicing opinion about, who can and will import anything you're after that they don't already have as part of your order.

I skipped the 1st Bones KS, but I was watching the countdown when the 2nd one went live and was able to grab one of the Early Bird pledges within the first hour of it going live. Having watched it all play out day by day, I can only hope that this 3rd KS changes a few things. For starters, the add-on expansions were not very popular with me because the 3 or 4 models that I wanted didn't merit me adding $50 for them. Like so many others, I'd like to see more terrain, sculpted bases, paint sets, etc from the next one. Sure, I have a ton of minis from Bones II that I'll never use, but I give away one or two a week to kids of friends. That's what Bones are for, right?

More terrain, more line troopers, that's my vote.

For me, I'd love a hoard of cops, SWAT, terrorists, insurgents, soldiers and rioters.

I'm sure for others a hoard of orcs, zombies, whatever would be more useful than more character models, esp if they're already out in metal.

Not really it's more a system for preordering and for manufacturers to cut out retailers. Instead of selling my product to a retailer for 20$ which in turn sells it to a customer for 40$ I can sell it on a kickstarter directly to the customer for 30 and make more money.

Why would you ever want to fund a new company or project? In between the 'KS isn't a preorder so you're not obliged to receive anything' schtick or the 'delays are normal' excuse, it seems it's best to just stick to kickstarters from established companies.

But seriously, KS is for whatever KS can get money from

I've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of the Reaper folks and conventions and at their HQ near Dallas. Very nice people.

They gave a great tour of their facility, showed us how they make pewter minis, and let us use their play area for a HackMaster tournament. I spent WAY too much on miniatures that trip!

That said, I have to skip Bones III. It was a hard decision to make, but I have too much unpainted gak, and I don't get to play games nearly as much as I used to with my new job, wife, and what not.

Oh, well.

What do you guys use to prime your bones? I went all out on KS1 and then promptly ebayed them all.. No matter what I tried I could not get paint to stick to them. Deep cleaned them and all. Primer always felt tacky, I let one dry for a week and it still wouldnt hold primer. All the same stuff I use on GW models just fine. I'd love to give them a 2nd chance for the larger stuff but they just suck to much to work with.

I've only painted a few, but I sprayed them with my normal black primer. They were tacky, as you say, so I hand painted a thin coat (50/50 water) of reaper black. No problem.

I just paint direct (don't thin your paint for the first layer), or brush paint on an acrylic primer

In theory you don't need to wash them but I always do anyway

the PVC does react badly to the solvents in some spray primers (or most sprays if you're heavy handed) giving you a tacky finish that just won't dry

so if you have to spray prime use an airbrush and acrylic primer

Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter - The Update Thread @ 2015/05/12 19:39:13

Post by: highlord tamburlaine

Primer is for people who care about what they paint.

I do it just like I did in the olden days- slap paint on directly and pray to the dark gods that it doesn't chip off or anything.

I have yet to see a Bones figure chip. Of course, I usually spray them with some sort of sealer which probably helps, but we tried some stress tests with the ones we've got- standing on them, hurling them at the walls, fun scientific stuff like that...

I hope for some generic modern figures that can be all bunched up- packs of cops, civilians, ninjas, stuff like that. Things that can find a use among many different games.

I have had very good luck with Army Painter spray primers - which also speed up the painting.

I do start with washing the Bones in soapy water, rinsing them, then letting them dry - then I go with an appropriate color of Army Painter primer. (Flesh primer for barbarians and other undraped humanoids, Necrotic Flesh for some zombies, Bone for skeletons and other zombies, etc..)

They seem to dry without tackiness.

See the Reaper Bones forum for preparation and "first coat" questions: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/forum/48-bones-miniatures-legendary-encounters/

Bones requires no primer per se, but is hydrophobic, so the conventional layers of paint thinned with water will bead on unpainted Bones.

Myself, I suggest trying underpainting on Bones, such as greyscaling, or blacklining. Try dark brown instead of black on fantasy miniatures. Once you have a coat of acrylic paint on the figure, you can paint as usual.

The Reaper forums have a thread on priming Bones including tests of different primers. I have been using Army Painter colored primers with no tackiness.

The one Bones mini I painted worked just fine with my standard Krylon primer.

I did find their "no primer needed" claim a little dubious though. I ended up stripping my first attempt and then priming, worked much better.

Going to further encourage Army Painter primers with Bones. They dry fantastic.

I disagree that it is only for Reaper paints and do not use primers on my bones- which is good as I'm out of white primer spray and still haven't bought more.

I use a variety or paint ranges- AP, Vallejo Game Color, P3 and Citadel primarily.

Provided the miniatures are washed thoroughly before painting (I scrub them in warm soapy water with an old toothbrush) and are completely dry before I start painting, all of the above paints have gone on fine, no primer. Just be sparing with them when applying as a base coat as thinning them with water upsets the Bones (I'll admit I haven't tried it with other thinners) After the base coat is on you can do what you want.

I haven't been able to get Vallejo model air or game air to adhere nicely onto the bare Bones, though.

Edit: I have used Army Painter spray primer on them too and they are great

Has anyone in the EU ordered from Reaper directly? I am quite keen on the Bones line but as others have noted it's rare and over priced over here.

But making a 70 euro order to qualify for free shipping would actually be a doddle for me, because there is so much I like in the range. But I was thinking about customs charges and the like, and whether it works out as worth it in the end. Any experiences?

I do slightly regret sitting out Bones 1 and 2 because I am the target market, but they are cheap enough at retail that I would be happy enough to pick them up anyway.

The only times I've ordered from Reaper directly are their Bones 1&2, and CAV Kickstarters (they have always posted the packages direct from their US warehouse). Without exception, these always get picked up by customs (although that may be more because they are large/heavy).

That being said, every EU country has a different way of handling imports, and it could still end up worthwhile. I'd expect to pay roughly 1.5 times the US price shipped to your door, all told.

Sounds a bit like zenithal priming?

Or maybe it's what I'm doing now with my Giants - first coat is undiluted Reaper HD MSP all over with no primer, so anywhere I want to paint something different later ie a vallejo metallic I'm putting a suitable Reaper colour underneath as a base coat first

I've had luck airbrushing slightly diluted black craft paint as a primer, as well as the Vallejo Surface Primers for the couple of figures (out of hundreds) I have in Bones. So far they've held up quite well in handling.

Sort of -- some colors you'll find difficult to paint, so you want to paint a color underneath them to make them show better. For example, if you want to paint red, you can first paint a layer of pink or flesh, then paint red on top. Greyscaling just means painting the miniature in black, white, and grey, before painting it in color. Blacklining means outlining areas of the miniature (eg. where the arm meets clothing) in a dark color to add contrast. You can use a natural dark brown instead of black. A running joke on the Reaper forums is that, since Brown Liner is commonly used for blacklining and underpainting Bones, the Reaper forum members want a 4 oz. bottle of it in the KS!

If you can't find these terms with a search (including zenithal priming), send me a PM!.

Thanks! I had a package picked up by the German customs recently, and while I didn't mind paying the fee, their office hours are really inconvenient and required taking time off work to pick up the package, which was quite off putting.

Perhaps if I get it shipped to my parents place in Ireland I will have more luck, since they are only a few minutes from the port.

I was pretty heavily in to the Bones 2 kickstarter after buying a few bones 1 minis just to try out. I am certainly in for the Bones 3 KS as well, but probably much lighter, cherry picking a few sets and the not-tiamat of course.

Basically agree with everything thats been said. I think the Bones material for humanoid/player character type minis is probably 'okay' at best. There are a number of decent to pretty good human sized casts in the KS2 core set but there are still lots that are... so-so... soft details, annoying rubbery weapons, etc. So I don't think I will bother with them anymore. Metal only for that size group. That said I love Love LOVE the medium-large to large bones minis. The giants, demons, and dragons from KS2 are amazing... cheap and great detail, nothing really lost in these casts. And the two massive sets, Khanjira and Dragons Dont Share are fantastic, even more so when you consider what you are paying for them.

So yes, definitely in for Bones3 but will definitely be much more selective.

A bit of news from their newsletter. Not many details on Bones 3 just heroes, monsters, terrain, nothing unexpected there. No mention of modern/sci-fi so this may (MAY!) turn out to be fantasy only.

They also announced a Kick Starter for their prepainted line Legendary Encounters. Again no details or date but it's coming too.

Bones III Kickstarter
Before we had even concluded the shipping of Bones II rewards back in March, you've been asking us when we we're going to do Bones III.

You want it? YOU GOT IT.

July 7th, we're launching Bones III, and bringing our popular BONES back to Kickstarter. We've got new models, new art, new designs, and a new hero!

Our Story begins as Mrs. Bones discovers thet Mr. Bones has been kidnapped, and Mrs. Bones takes up her sword to travel through Bonesylvania as we unlock new models and new surprises, including demons, dragons, gods, terrain, heroes, villains, lycanthropes, peasants, monsters, and more! Each stretch goal is new Bones models for you, and brings her one step closer to rescuing Mr. Bones from the evil... Well, that's a secret.

Keep your eyes on our Forums to see previews, secrets, and talk to the project creators before the project launches!

Legendary Encounters Kickstarter

In 2007 we launched our first plastics line, Legendary Encounters. These were pre-painted, non random, non-blind miniatures packaged in our standard visible blisters. You could see what you were getting, and always get the right one. The only problem was, the process of making new molds was expensive, and we coudn't keep up.

In 2011, we used Kickstarter to successfully create the BONES line of miniatures, creating over a hundred new molds for over 300 new plastic figures. But in the back of our mind, we always knew that the Legendary Encounters pre-painted plastics needed some attention, too. And while we can now use dozens of our BONES molds, the Legendary Encounters figures are more expensive to produce and prototype than the BONES are.

Kickstarter to the Rescue! This fall, we're going to re-launch a new and improved Legendary Encounters Kickstarter, a new project designed to help us get hundreds of new models, new paint jobs, and new ideas to market! If you don't want to paint a million beasties for your games, or you just like the idea of us doing the work for you, this project is for you!

Keep an eye out for more news at reapermini.com.

Is Bones III separate from the Legendary Encounters KS? I'm confused..

In general, I was pleased with Bones II. There were a few models that even after re-issues from miscast were just not what I would consider usable. However, as a whole, the value and variety was insane. Some of the post-KS prices have been shocking enough that I would definitely look long and hard at this before assuming I had my fill of Bonesium.

As to the pre-paints.. it would entirely depend on the specific miniatures and the level of painting. Basic block painting is not something I would pay a premium for.

If you look back at Bones I and II, they've already offered stone, hill, fire, ice, and other D&D giants, which means that they don't need to fund molds for these "species". So any giants in Bones III would be for less popular varieties, such as fomorian.

Maybe!

Dear god that giant thing looks stupid. Yeah, formorians are deformed, but there's no excuse for making THAT. Should have just used one of their ridiculously expensive ogres instead. This guy is actually useful in bonus as opposed to 20 bucks a pop in metal.

I was more amused by the odd lion dog personally. Seems to be very short and squat for that type of statue.

I have one in metal, and it's a pretty terrible sculpt. It comes across to me like the sculptor wanted to meet a deadline and had no particular interest in foo dogs/stone lions and just went with slapdash and goofy. The Arcane Legions stone lions are about the same size (not as chunky) and are much, much better sculpts.
Having said that, the rolly-poly, happy foo dog does have some character. I'll probably pick another up in Bones since he'll be so cheap.

Wake me up when it's funded and at 100 minis for the basic pledge, or when I can get some cheap huge monsters as add-ons.

I also like about 10 figures. For $100, I'd need to see at least 30 minis I actually like, another 30 with the potential for conversions or paintsploitation, and at least 30 more for 'bargain ballast'. Bones 2 was very nearly a poor deal for me, so I'm hoping Bones 3 isn't as full of the dregs as it appears.

He's a Wraith.

I think I may just put in a token pledge when it goes live. I'd be interested in what sci-fi stuff they'll have. So far, I'm not especially impressed.

There's also not a lot of monsters or generic mooks in that initial 30. Most are PC types, and bones kind of sucks for that. I can spend the extra 2-3 dollars for a figure I'll use every session. I'm more reluctant to do so on monsters that might only get used every so often (and giants are a straight up no at that price point).

I know they say that's their big sellers, but that was in metal. Now that DM's have cheap options to fill out dungeons, that seems to be changing. On the reaper site, their bestsellers are a werewolf, a 6 pack of kobolds, a 4 pack of goblins, a generic dwarf with an axe, a minotaur, a paladin and a giant spider. Only the paladin looks very "PC-like", the rest are sword fodder you buy multiples of. I wish they'd focus more on that. Throw out some hobgoblins, ghouls, trolls, ogres etc. I count about 6 on that list I'd want multiples of (sword n board fighter and viking in the top row, death dog, evil guard with shield face, wardog, and the wraith if it didnt look so bad).

As lord_blackfang implied, this isn't even the entire base pledge, or what they intend it to be. There'll be plenty of mooks, goons, and goblins later.

As we've seen with past reaper kickstarters, they always include quite a few PC-type characters in the base starting pledge. I believe they try to transfer all their best-sellers over to bones, and larger monsters that aren't usually affordable(or feasible) in metal.

Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter - The Update Thread @ 2015/06/25 18:54:37

But Bossk_Hogg is totally right in saying that PC-type models just aren't that useful in large numbers. Out of the 30, you'll typically use only one for the duration of a campaign. Let's say 5 if you're lending them to the rest of the party. If the pledge is 100 PCs, it's still really not any better. You can still get that one dude you need for a fiver on eBay instead of paying $100 for him and them hoping you play in 99 more campaigns before you die to get your money's worth.

Huh. Seemed like a pretty good mix to me, especially with a nice leavening of evil looking plate wearers. Face-shield sorceror demands a dungeon that looks like a sinus x-ray. I'm also quite fond of Stardwarf- the artifact on his back is ripe to use in a campaign.

Although I have no idea what happened to that Fomorrian, and I think his lion dog is eating to hide its confusion.

Yeah, it's just that the thinking of "this sells more in metal, so should be converted to Bones first over this other metal item that sells less" is a bit of faulty thinking IMO. Take the ogre. At $20 each that's about $100 -$120 for a typical ogre encounter. Pretty much no one is buying at that price. So he's lower in the queue to be bonesified than Random Dual Wielding dude #47 who sells for $6. However a bones ogre at $5 would likely outsell same Random Dual Wielding dude #47 at $2 because DM's can afford to buy multiples, whereas previously they were better off even buying a pack of GW's ogres to use. It just seems to me that they should be selecting what to convert with more of an eye as to what will sell as bones, over what currently sells in metal. It just seems the bones PC market is a little crowded, but the mook monster could use a lot more loving.

.

I'm good. I just like making Dr. Zoidberg comments.

I went back and forth hard on BonesII, but ended up pledging just for the paint, the Kajira, and Dragons don't share. As always, I regret not just buying one of every large model.

I agree with you. They should focus less on PCs and more on NPCs.

My guess is that since Bones are eventually sold individually retail, roleplayers will be able to hit the FLGS racks and pick and choose which miniature they want for their PC. Roleplayers are picky about their miniatures, but they're cheap and won't paint them, so detail's not *that* important.

I think the KS is good for bulk purchases by DM's. And I finally get a Foo Dog for Tegal Manor!

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure I read on Reaper's message board that those new ogres were probably going to show up in this campaign as it is.

That Fomorian certainly is ugly though.

There's a few figures I like in there. Already have a few in metal though, like that robed and helmeted bad guy with the evil face shield. He's a nice model.

Bones 3 is only running for 18 days, ending on July 25th at 5PM Central Time, So be sure you don't miss it! For all of you Bones veterans, you'll recognize a lot of the structure. There's a Core Set which will grow and expand as we reach new goals. There's Optional Rewards that you can increase you pledge for, there's pledge manager to help track and calculate your selections, and there's plenty of heroes, monsters, gigantic threats, terrain, and amazing surprises to fill 18 days of miniatures madness!"

Back early to catch an earlier shipping wave. However, which wave you pledged didn't really matter for Bones II, since they put in "padding" between wave shipping dates. So, with the dock strike, the first waves were delayed and used up the "padding", and the later ones shipped "on time"or earlier.

fwiw, For the Bones II KS, Reaper increased the prices by 20% (?) for late backers, so pledge during the campaign. Not sure about what policy they used for $1 pledgers.

Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter - The Update Thread @ 2015/07/06 23:03:40

It should just be for wave shipping again. Earlier you pledge, the earlier they'll pack and send out your pledge.

Strangely, this one is going to compete with Mierce's Metal KS for me, despite being at pretty much exactly opposite ends of the quality/price scale. Still, with 18 days I think I can hide the 100$ expenditure well enough to justify it!

It was really rather insane, and it forced all sorts of strange questions when selecting add-ons:

"Okay, so adding on a $50 expansion raises the shipping cost by another $26. Of course, the £8 VAT handling fee remains constant for the entire shipment, but I'll be paying another 20% VAT on top of that $76 which makes it....$92. Wait, if I add the Dragons Don't Share as well, that puts me over the threshold for a separate import duty at 5%, so as well as the expansion costing me $97 now, it's raised the cost of my base pledge by a further $5."

...and so on. Frankly, in the age of every single other Kickstarter I back being EU-friendly, I just can't be bothered at this point. I've never understood why Reaper doesn't want to sell its products abroad, but they've made it quite clear.

Reaper is already being punished by their US distributors for daring to run direct to customer kickstarters, it's possible they're not able to find a willing international partner.

Maybe if you look at it from the perspective of just trying to get the funding for the bones for these models and making a good show of it. They are not trying to be the biggest kickstarter out there, but think of it as good PR when they make the big dollars on the kickstarter as being something to brag about to their board (if they have one I'm not sure). They could just say US only on the kickstarter, but think of the negative publicity that would create. Plus if they made it so cheap for outside the U.S. , then it would blow up even further creating more of a headache I. Logistics for them to fulfill. In the end I think that they are limiting the sales externally (outside the U.S. market) by not making it easier for the kickstarter backers financially through the shipping costs so that later they can still capitalize on regular sales in those markets.

Maybe the same problem as with Zombicide? KS server ran out of steam...

Kickstarter is definitely having problems. Took three minutes to process my pledge, another five to receive the email confirming the pledge, and I still haven't received the email for the first update. If Reaper actually manages to successfully make any changes to the page within this first hour, it will be a minor technological miracle.

Mine went through easy peasy, but now I have nothing to do but stare at what we know we're already getting.

Guess I'll go paint stuff til we see some updates.

I wonder if the funding total is also throttled like it was at the start of Black Plague.

That started to jump by the tens of thousands when KS finally caught up.

Meh. In for "Remind Me" and giving the final deals a good dose of looking at. I really liked all the stuff I got in Bones II, but the failure to sort out an EU shipping deal, when that has, since then, become standard, is putting me right off.

Saw it live, pledged $100 without even looking at what was being offered.
Looked at the figures and the 1st $60,000 stretch goal.
Looked at total $313,154

They need to add more stretch goals

Pledged for wave 3. Was just in and out at around a minute. Used the iPhone app though, if that makes a difference.

They will, as soon as KS lets them.

Right now it's the same situation as Zombicide had, with KS Servers trying to catch up.

Any idea how they'll sort out those of use who pledged for wave one, but have been stuck in processing for over an hour. Do we just get bumped to wave 2 which is filling up on it's own, or booted out and have to repledge at whatever wave is then open?

Huh. Yeah, look at the Kickstarter page, see a few hundred slots still open for Wave one (pledge total was only about $130k), pledge, then glance at my mail expecting to see the usual pledge confirmation message. Shrug and move on.

Go back to the project to see if Reaper's woken up and see how far the total's jumped, see it's at $300k, pledge still shows as being processed, and doesn't show up in my list yet.

Reaper is already being punished by their US distributors for daring to run direct to customer kickstarters, it's possible they're not able to find a willing international partner.

I think the huge amount of options (add as many as you like of each individual mini in the core set, plus the add on single big monsters, plus the extra sets) means that even if they did find a willing partner the costs to them would be substantial

(although I'd love them to do it)

People booted from Zombicide when the same thing happened (thus loosing the EB slots) just had to re-pledge (and KS reportedly wern;t interested)

I'd imagine Reaper will do the same as if 1-2000 extra folk claimed to have been blocked from wave 1 and let in they probably would not be able to process everything in that time frame anyway

The Corsairs are interesting. Not a bad price for 5 of them. I'm going to guess Terminator size.

I wish they'd put a sir Forscale next to all the add ons though. The dragons definitely need him there.

Not really a fan of the 50K stretch goals right out of the gate, when half the time they're unlocking...a paid add-on. I feel that 400K should have a more attractive looking core $100 set, honestly.

Not enough I "need" in the core set to be worth it.

Got a reply about those Corsairs.

They said they spaced the goals out more for day 1 so they can be closer together in the mid-campaign lull.

Yeah, in Bones 2 they literally ran out of stretch goals to offer so, this makes sense.

I'm thinking the Corsairs may actually be closer to the size of a Deadzone Strider. At the price it doesn't matter either way because I likes them just fine at either size

Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter - The Update Thread @ 2015/07/07 17:13:27

I'm thinking they might be more Strider sized as well.

2 inch bases are about 50mm or so, so it's possible they'll be pretty decent sized figures.

Also the next goal-

LavuarnGuard,

Someone on the Reaper Forum (and on Kickstarter Bones III too) did the following to get their pledges to complete.

Mithrangul has been my favorite Reaper dragon for many many years, I regret not picking one up for $40 when it first came out about 12 years ago, price increases made it jump way too far above my price range, but for $15? you bet your booty I'm in for one!

I'm in for wave 2 shipping, probably going to stay there despite not really feeling it. I'm still mad I missed first reaper KS, 2nd was a "good enough" deal for me but I was supremely unimpressed by any of the core addons for Bones2 beyond $1miillion.

I'm expecting more of the same from Bones3: a decent deal that's worth it in the end, but nothing spectacular

I think Viridius is the new #1 on my list of "Reaper's Worst Dragon Sculpts", and let me tell you, there is some stiff competition there.

And I see Reaper is already getting on the Sigmarines bandwagon with the "Crusaders"

Glad to hear I'm not the only one underwhelmed with the dragon selections so far. They all seem pretty nondescript and give off a very "been there, done that" type vibe.

Of course, these dragons are all metal to bones conversions, so that might be part of the reason they aren't grabbing me. I really liked the dragons I got in Bones 2, and for the most part, they were new sculpts.

Agreed on the Dragon, but I'd hardly liken the Crusaders to Sigmarines. More like Protectorate Cinerators if anything.

· New Learn To Paint Bones Kits are in development, but they are beyond the scope of this project, and will be released through our normal channels, including retail and distribution

· Pledge Calculator- https://ks.reapermini.com/bones3

· The Pledge manager tool will help calculate shipping for international backers. --However, individuals are responsible for knowing their local import laws, to include customs and VAT fees, Reaper is not responsible for paying any customs or VAT fees. Please understand the potential costs before pledging for large amounts.

· To adjust your pledge amount up, you must total up all the items you want and change your pledge amount to reflect that. The Pledge Calculator can assist with that. The Pledge Calculator will not charge any money now. Once the KS ends a few weeks later (about 3-5 weeks) the Pledge Calculator will become the Pledge Manager. At that time your KS pledge amount will become credit and you will have the option to add-on more.

· We spaced out the first day goals slightly and then made the middle period goals closer together. It makes the middle 2 weeks easier to bear if the goals are smaller, since that time span has a smaller average pledges per day.—ie. Meaning that instead of waiting a day or two to hit a new goal, there should be one or two goals hit a day.

· Diabolus does have four legs, one is just slashing out at a greedy adventurer.....

· One of everything is currently $198, not including any applicable shipping.

· Individual parts of the core-set will be available as add-ons later in the campaign.

If you could get only the head of Viridius for 5$ and use it as a sea serpent, it wouldn't be so bad.

No way I'd pay 15$ when Attack Wing and McFarlane exists.

Already got the gargantuan Tiamat, not interested in a non-WotC version(maybe Final Fantasy's). Better to wait ever how many years to get an official colossal.

Or if they had a saddle to cover up that really bad join/transition.. would be about the only other thing. Definitely not a fan of that sculpt. None of the dragons they've shown for this one have even slightly interested me.
That said, there's a lot in this one that I'm liking, but the dragons are not it.

From the last KS to this one, I'll have what I need for a troglodyte quest featuring kobolds, a beefy chieftan, and all kinds of goodies. It looks like they did some reasearch and are spreading the selection out to open up more opportunities IMO.

According to this quote from the latest FAQ I'm guessing yes:

" Expansions will have a more cohesive theme this time than they did last time. The Core will continue to be an "everything but the kitchen sink" shotgun style, eclectic selection."

Wasn't a fan of the expansion idea, would rather it be all piecemeal. Made the choices really tough last year.

One thing to point out about the henge- they mention it being only the FIRST of the large terrain pieces so far.

My wallet finds that worrisome.

I don't know how keen I am on the expansions. If there really is more cohesion, I might be persuaded.

I did like Expansion One though- it was almost as wide of selection of stuff as the actual core set.

I noticed that about the scenery. I hope they have some kind of sci-fi scenery planned for this one. Maybe a small building? A small, plastic building that requires no assembly and is cheap could be useful to a lot of sci-fi gamers, especially Infinity players.

A generic cottage or small wooden building would probably get just as much traction as a scifi one.

Escenorama has a set that IMO would be perfect for being bones-ified.. in theme if not design. It's made out of chunks that can be built into ruins, full buildings, two story buildings, etc..

Me too. $15 is a steal!

I wish it was abit more detailed. It's not anything I couldn't just knock out with abit of pink-foam in a a hour. But I will admit that it would be alot more durable/longer lasting then something made of pink foam. Thus why I'm still tempted by it.

Damn, that's a awsome idea.

I suspect The Henge will have a very poor cost/value ratio for those of us who have to pay shipping.

It's $49 just to ship the core set to Australia, and $60 with 1 each of the add ons so far, I don't think the cost/value is going to get better

I suppose it's fairly obvious now that this is not a ROW friendly kickstarter, unless you just want to get it because of lack of availability otherwise.

I will keep my wave 1 pledge for now, but I expect I will cancel it before the end.

Given that the Reaper webstore does free shipping over £60, it will probably make sense to wait and pick up the few bits I actually want at retail.

If I was in the US, I would deffo stay in as at $100 the value should be there even with a LOT of minis that will never see any use or daylight

I'm going to sit tight to wait and see what Victoria Lamb's contribution to this all is going to be. Got good hopes for that and it may just make this all worthwhile for me.

I'm currently in for a dollar, but with how long I'd be waiting to get my pledge anyways, I might just wait until they hit their site after the KS. The only thing really grabbing me is Stonehenge, because I saw someone on the Warmahordes subreddit talking about making it into a terrain piece for Circle, and since my fiancee plays Circle and I'm Legion, it would be awesome to make the Henge half Circle and half Legion as well.

Edit: They're going to make a Mrs. Bones model, right? She looks awesome.

Is it me or does this seem to be moving a bit slower than last campaign? Came pretty close to breaching a million first day with Bones2 right?

There is something about those Ogres that make me think of naked mole rats. (I know that I am going to get them, but I don't think that I will use them as ogres....)

@Sinful Hero - Yeah.. they spaced it out to slow it down out of the gate.. which I think is a mistake.. but, we'll see.

Second. I like them as Ogre Braves, or possibly converted to carry spears.

How are the shipping fees handled post-campaign? Via Paypal?

I like Ogres, naked mole rat and all.

I must be off my game because, I didn't realise that the "invisible" hereos were going to be transparent. I just thought they were suppossed to be behind the scense kind of guys

Reaper's lengthening the early SG's, then will shorten the mid-funding SG's, to avoid the usual mid-funding lull most KS's have.

Remember that Reaper usually has October and December promotions, so buy direct from them then! Buying from the website is more profitable per miniature for Reaper because they sell at full MSRP and there's no retailer or distributor cut, so that's why they can provide "free" shipping. You still have two weeks to make your decision!

With Ogres and a Fomorrian as the current centerpiece, this is giving off a pretty serious Little Keep on the Borderlands vibe now. All we need are some bugbears and a beholder, though the Lizardmen are a real easy stand in.

Credit card, webstore style. I forget exactly which, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Stripe.

If you use the pledge calculator it will tell you how much to add to your pledge for shipping.

I dropped around $20 on 2 scenery sets and a couple of the exclusives with Bones 2, and am very happy with what I received for that pricetag.

A friend and I might split a core pledge this time, and a couple of those add ons are awfully appealing.
