Living in Japan and my huge fleet is parked at a friend in my home country, haven't played BFG for ages but now i want to play it again so i started to get some ships together.
Magnetized weapon bays (well technically only the ships have magnets and the weapon parts have bend paperclips in them) Left from Battlegroup helios right weapon bay from GW
Spoiler:
Metal Star Wars ship i found a few years back, will use it maybe as an base or capital ship?
Ruckdog wrote: Neat use of the old Yamato models! I bought a few of those years ago with the idea of using them in BFG too .
Those are not the old ones, but the new ones from Yamato 2199 they are better sized for BFG, the older models are bigger.
Progress on my acquired Helios ships, will also add some stripes like the scratch built one.
Spoiler:
Battlefleet gothic ship in the front with battlefleet Helios weapon bays (the one in the back with original someone donated to me at the recent Nagoyahammer event).
Ruckdog wrote: Neat use of the old Yamato models! I bought a few of those years ago with the idea of using them in BFG too .
Ha! So did I. I have a few dozen of them. Can't bring myself to sell them, but they haven't come out of their plano storage in a few years now... Someday?
My Other Battlefleet gothic Helios ship is as good as done, only need to to do the weapon bays that is why put in some temporary ones. Only need some touch ups here and there.
Cleaned out some closets and found some stuff i could use for BFG, put in a BFG ship for size comparison.
An internet cookie for people who can name them all
Wow, that's fantastic. I didn't realize they were so close in size. Very cool.
I'm still hoping someone will eventually post a photo of the landraider/ trukk/ grav tank from that game against some of their Epic equivalents (or I should say: I'm still hoping to stumble across those photos eventually...)

I have the old epic but it is in my home country
Things i worked on yesterday ( was a holiday in Japan 文化の日 culture day)
Based the Forbidden stars ships but ran out of 32mm bases
That is really cool!. I have been curious what the chaos models would look like if painted some other color than red. So what are you using the Grand Cruisers as?

Thanks, they have earth fleet ships in design, looking forward to those. have finished the Forbidden stars chaos and space marine ships, will post the pictures soon.
Roadkill Zombie wrote: That is really cool!. I have been curious what the chaos models would look like if painted some other color than red. So what are you using the Grand Cruisers as?
Just as normal cruisers i guess.
Way to small for that, alas. I was really disappointed when I opened my copy since I totally misjudged the mini-Repulsives, was planning to use them as Dauntless standins for a Heresy-era fleet, but they're not even big enough for that. They're "heavy escort" sized really.
The Space Marine models are brilliant though; the mini-Battlebarge is literally perfectly sized to stand in for a Strike Cruiser, and the mini-Strike Cruisers will work great as Frigates. I'm actually enamoured enough of them I'm going to try and find another box in a Black Friday sale(which I'm justifying to myself as "well if you bought three SCs and a frigate squadron on ebay it would cost you more than £60 anyway, so you're getting all the other stuff for free" ) so I can have a "standard" 6-SC fleet of them. The Eldar stuff looks like it will see use as well, the escorts are roughly the right size, perhaps a tad small, but with minor conversion the mini-Void Stalker should work as standins for the FW Eldar light cruiser model.
Have either of you compared the FFG land units to their GW Epic equivalents? The Orc Trukk, Eldar grav tank, and SM landraider are neat looking models, I was wondering how they'd look up against the old Epic models.

Yes i agree they are a tad small, but until i have the real thing they will be cruisers in my games

I wish i could but i have nothing to compare it with my old epic stuff is all stored in my home country.
My Forbidden stars Chaos and Marine fleet are as good as finished (only need to add my chapter emblem on the space marine ships)
That is a sweet model! What's the packaging look like and where do you get those? And if you're not in Japan, anyone know if they are available overseas, or mostly just Japanese domestic products?
I've seen some old ones in Japantown here in San Francisco, maybe I need to head back and see if they have any newer models!
Aha, took a little googling (my first effort failed), but it looks like it's this one: BANDAI HOBBY #5 MECHA COLLECTION DESSULA-II "SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO 2199" MODEL KIT, and I found it on sale for $17 on bambuzo.com (A site I've never heard of...)

Awesome! But you keep torturing us, posting these cool Japanese ships without any links or references!
I can't wait until they re-release BFG. Though it's not too likely I'll ever play, I'll probably collect an Eldar fleet, just because they're so cool looking!

Well those i do not provide links for, are from gashapon, or collectible box series, that come once and then are gone forever.
Forbidden stars cruisers almost finished, here is the progress
Spoiler:
And ordered some ships from shapeways, The barge was bigger than i expected and the cruisers smaller than expected, the only gripe is that they came without bases.
The barge looks a liitle small for a battleship or battle barge, but looks about right for a grand cruiser. The cruiser looks like it'll make an excellent light cruiser or strike cruiser.
They come without bases because Shapeways aren't a miniatures or gaming company. They're simply a manufacturer of 3D printed doodads and knick-knacks. To them, those things you bought are no different to a cutlery stand, a decorative napkin ring or anything else they sell.

I saw a picture on the net that it is comparable to a Space marine battle barge so that is what i am going to use it as.
pancakeonions wrote: Kewl! How'd you scratch build it? plastic card? greenstuff? odds n ends? Or all of the above?
Exactly
I use left over parts, sprues, greenstuff, and anything that i can use to make ships. the top of the last ship is from a 3rd party jet bike that came with 2 different lower halves, i used that for the top
of the ship.
Fixed the bases on the BFG ships and modified the chaos ships my Yamato 2199 and gundam musai can proxie as carrier ships so i turned my chaos ships into gun boats. Als added some gubbins on the side of my Scratchbuilt ship bridge, so it doesn't looks so bare.
My first battle of BFG in 10 years,700 point cruiser clash with a friend , threw a lot of lucky sixes after a few turns my imperial opponent ships were all crippled, so we stopped when that happened.
Spoiler:
After its glorious victory the musai needed a new paint job
From the guy that i played BFG against last week i acquired some ships an incomplete Battlebarge and a bunch of Chaos cruisers. Those cruisers where made by a guy with no clue about the game most were unusable configurations, and i spilled blood for the chaos gods getting some stuff off.
You're doing a great job selling me Forbidden Stars too...
How important is size/scale in BFG? I thought it was irrellevent since the ships are really just tiny dots in the center of the base? Is it just an aesteic issue?
pancakeonions wrote:I played Space Fleet last night, my first foray into 40K starship battles ever.
It was hilarious. Thankfully, the beer was plentiful. I'm eager to try out BFG (especially since I understand it's nothing like Space Fleet!)
The models were painted though, and they looked nice!
OMG there's more than one out there!
I just got Space Fleet off of ebay and spent way too much amassing funky old ships for it.
It is more an aesthetic thing as the base size determine battle ships, i just try to keep ships in the same size so the Forbidden stars battleships become cruisers and the escort class ships are about the same size so they are ok.
This is a bad time to get into BFG, but you have done well for yourself.
I am surprised you havent done a Tau fleet with the Trade Federation and assorted Japanese franchise ships. They would fit right in.
As for scratchbuild. Nids nids nids. Also make roks for your orks, rok heavy ork fleets can work, less ramming but good cheap capable firepower.
A request, can you place a ruler by the forbidden stars vessels, especially the eldar Void Stalker and the ork vessels. I might get a set to round out my eldar and ork fleets if the items are suitably scaled.

I play Chaos and Imperium, Xenos have no place in my fleets!
I have so many Japanese ships i could just proxy them.
Hey can you take a pic of BFG next to Space Fleet? I'm trying to get an idea of how undersized the SF ships are.
My whole space fleet fleet is in my home country, but what i remember is that the Emperor size battle ship is about the size of a dauntless
found this though
That's very handy thanks. Not as bad as I feared, the Gothics are about the size of a GW plastic cruiser, much less massive but length wise not bad at all.
Novemberrain, I've been painting up Space Fleet ships lately but don't have any BFG to compare them to, do you have any pictures of a Gothic ship next to a BFG cruiser?
Trying to get an idea of how undersized they might be.
The upper head part of the demon engine i am working has a detachable shuttle which will be used as a strike cruiser for my Hello Kitty Space marine chapter!
It has been a while Had a Tzeench Flying Horror? in my bit box for a while, decide to turn it into a Tyranid/monster ship for Battle Fleet Gothic. Base colors;
Looks pretty good, nice idea. How does it scale with the rest of the fleet and other fleets? One thing that always annoyed me was the lack of Tyranid ships that meant you had to scratchbuild and my scratchbuild skills are awful. I got a couple of hive ships and the smaller escort ships (I forget the name of them) but if you wanted anything destroyer sized - i.e. the mainstay of any fleet, you had to buidl it yourself.

About the length of an imperial cruiser i guess, haven't checked it yet
As good as finished, maybe he armor plates and then i am done.
First Battle of the Year played a BFG battle with Kid_Kyoto who was visiting Japan, a 500 point Chaos versus Space fleet imperials.
Didn't expect him to have a carrier so that bit me in the behind, but still a fun battle
Set up
Spoiler:
Killed the escorts
Spoiler:
But in return he killed one of my Slaughter class cruisers
Spoiler:
Next slaughter about to die
Spoiler:
Note to self don't forget to use brace for impact order
Kid_Kyoto wrote: Oh those are very nice. Obviously they're from Yamato 2199, but what kit are they?
They are not a kit, they are like those boxes you buy at the convenience store with anime figures or robots, these are not in rotation any more so i find them at second hand shop
Just stumbled across this thread, so much win I dont know where to start!
Loving that Hyperion, just about to start painting my ones. On the Omega is it just an illusion or is that actually held up on three stands? Its amazing how much more detail your B5 ships have than the ones I own.

It is Held up on 2 stands, for BFG rules you need the center stand, thanks for the comment
Just pick one stand and measure ranges to that (that's how it worked in B5Wars, too; for ACTA, it was retooled to fit on a single stand, but that means the centre section can't rotate).
Been thinking about using the turrets on the Kongo class from the Yamato 2199 line for the torp launchers on a Schismatic class. Anyone have any thoughts on that before i buy some?

Which scale ships are talking about?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I ship i left back in Holland
A Battlecruiser with a Warmaster Steamtank as Prow
BaronIveagh wrote:Thank you, now I know that I would have wasted money getting that SBY ship to harvest the turrets from for torp launchers on a swivel.
You are welcome although i am not sure what you are referring too

I love both of them. The Warmaster steam tank is a stroke of genious!
Thanks, although getting a non metal variant would be good as the metal prow makes the plastic cruiser very top heavy
