Just back from the honeymoon (missing Italy already) and I got a ton of stuff on the 'to paint' shelf and a whole pile of other stuff coming up that just doesn't fit in any of the (too many) other plogs I got. So - time for (yet) another blog. This is the last one.......promise In here we're gonna have an ork I'm gonna be painting for KB's dakka dakka clan, all the figs for the 4th ed Space HUlk I got from EBay last month and a hobbit for the paint swap thread, plus whatever else I paint up to that doesn't fit in my other plogs. This here is gonna be one big ol bag of everything lol
Ok so here's what coming up in the 'bag' (more of a 'paint me now you fether' shelf but anyways...)
Bilbo!!! This fig is gorgeous. Really sweet sculpt. Totally captures bilbo's character imho. He is a teeny tiny little fella! Thinking of a dark velvet suit and then as besuits bilbo, a really flash fancy waistcoat
Space Hulk. Picked up an unopened copy of 4th ed Space hulk finally from eBay for $90. I used to play 1st ed and loved it (wretched figs, awesome game) so I just had to get the latest one if for nothing else than the figs. This could take me some time but I made a wee start on some of the 'stealers ship bases before I went away. Just trying out how I was going to do the metals to look like old space hulk ship metals. I have an idea on the scheme for the stealers. Nothing colourful and flash though. Not a fan of the my little pony schemes 'nids/'stealers get done in very often these days. These ones will be much more somber and creepy. Monochromatic I think
thinking a black laquery feel for the hard carapace shells. the softer under parts, arms, face et al more white then with tight brown glazes in the shadows, face will be glazes more of a fleshy colour over the white and then blood!
Kb_lock's ork warboss finally arrived in the post and got him all prepped up. Nice fig, semi- snap fit but the pieces definitely need a bit of coersion to go in. Hopefully get a start on him come the weekend along with bilbo and maybe get the dominus finished up.......yeah......
Painting shelf is now full!!! Lotta stuff to be getting on with!!
Bit of progress on the orks fella. Skin pretty much done now. Final glaze or so later on to smooth it out maybe. Happy enough with him though for my first ork
So, with the AdMech dio finally done my immediate to paint shelf is beginning to clear. Have promised myself I'm not opening any new kits or starting on anything else til the shelf is clear. So, next up is to continue with KB's war boss and to get stuck into SirDonald's bilbo fig. Really really lovely sculpt. Face is so full of character. But damn - this is one tiny fig!!!! Without further ado - time to get some base layers down. Bus of the size and the delicate details this lil guy is gonna have to be painted with much much thinner layers than usual. Can't wait to see him all done
Up early to do a bit of work on wee Bilbo here. Quick WiP. Trousers and jacket are more or less complete. May add another thin glaze later on. Quoted cuffs and lapels are annoying me so gonna leave them for the while and move onto the book and the the skin. Hope yea like him. Fun wee fig to paint
Got a bit done this weekend. Bilbo is nearly done but the ski work started to get on my .....wick so I'll leave him for the day. Happy with him overall though. Just need to think how to base now
Got more done on the warboss too. Actually had the metals all but finished and looking awesome with some weathering powders but then when I went to seal this with some spray varnish - feth's up and it seemed to pretty disappear the powders and give me a little frosting to boot Annoying as hell. Thanks to my magic brush on Matt varnish I got rid of the frosting but need to redo the rust, weathering and soot *sigh*
Cheers AoV Aye, Goff clan I reckon. First time painting an ork so kinda winging it lol. Black trousers and popped a wee worn checker on him too. Didn't want to go to overboard on him on that though. Gutted about the the dissaprearing weathering powders as he was looking sweet. nvm
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Para - aye, still trying to think what to do. I have cobblestones too but a wooden floor with a corner of a rug on it might be the business.
Liking Para's idea of a wooden floor so got home from work and.....how to make a wooden floor. Out comes the green stuff and half an hour of me wandering around the house looking for something wooden with a nice grain to iprint on the green.....nothing, nada. Everything and anything wooden has been sanded and smoothed to silk. Sat back down at my workspace and ...the small shelving unit I use to keep my paints on......fake plastic wood grain!!! Wooden floor imprinted onto the base and had a wee bit left over to make a wee rug (thanks jeans) and a few little books. Will need a bit of fine tuning once dry but hopefully will do the job nicely
Finial push. Wee Bilbo's nearly done. Liked Para's idea of a wooden floor and a run...... So made them. Get them painted up this evening hopefully. Base Bilbo in and then some final touches.
True that. Was a nice wee break from all the greys I've been doing lately with the AdMech. Blood Angels and 'stealers up next.....unless I get busy on an AdMech conversion I have in mind lol
Cheers KB. Well happy. Finishing the Warboss (really need to think up a proper name for him.....I've just been calling him NutzCracker thus far) is up next. Should have him done by the weekend
Well, that's wee Bilbo all done and finished. Happy with how the wee guy turned out. Photos are a bit naff as in a rush to get them up before I head off to Seoul today. Irish Embassy and then, more importantly.....some hobby shopping lol. Next just gotta get him sent back to Sir Donald. Hope yez like him
Great work on Bilbo there! He's come up really well. Warboss is looking good as well. I've found that applying weathering powders wet in a mix of matt varnish and medium after varnishing the figures seems to work, though you don't get that dusty look - but then the dusty look is almost impossible to keep on figures that you do varnish...
Thx very much Az. I'll give that a bash with the powders. Pity can't really keep that rusty dusty look more than just doingit for a finished photo but hey ho there we go
gonna try and get the warboss finihsed this weekend then it's back to my own stuff again. Time fro some 'stealer I think lol
Cheers Grimdork. Shamefully I have rather a lot of painting blogs. My rubbish attempt at keeping stuff orgainised. Usually I'm lucky to manage organising matching socks lol
Automatically Appended Next Post: Making a start on some Space Hulk stuff today. Blood Angels.........not really a massive Blood Angels fan - too reddy red. Gonna try for a more rust browny red...darker so they dont look liking the usual walking candy. we'll see.....
I really like the muted tones for the Ork! What was the highlighting process? At a guess it looks like every colour was highlighted with Karak Stone or something similar?
As for Blood Angels, a darker red is definitely something that can work well. I like to start from an almost-purple (or at least a red-blue mix) then add increasingly more red as you get lighter. When doing them like that, I never take the highlights brighter than neat red, so there's no red+light grey/white in there.
Actually I nearly forgot to highkight his trousers at all. Just at the end I noticed they were still just flat black. Nice fig though for my first ork. Fun painting him esp playing around with all the metals
Finally got KB_Lock's AOBR Warboss all done and some photos taken. His skin has come out a bit more yellowy in the photos than it really is but am a bit pushed for time to fiddle about with the snaps for now - so there we go Hope yez like him - was lots of fun to paint, esp that lovely big snippy claw of his
Cheers Minus I really do rather like painting TMM. Not really been that taken with the whole NMM thing...the skill involved is cracking but I'm not mad keen on the end 'look'.
He's not my fig - he's actually getting sent off to be part of KB-Lock's Dakka Dakka ork clan. Was a fun paint though
He will never know how beautiful he is, only concerned with hittin fings. Excellent work all around, the metallics are great as has been said. I think NMM has it's place but it isn't the total solution for every model, it has a distinctive look but so does TMM and TMM does gritty/dark better IMO and so I prefer it.
Me too And, surely, it has nothing to do with my relative skill level and degree of patience with such tricky things as NMM. Nothing at all!
Well, really not much. I don't think I could pull it off without a load of practice, but I've never really wanted to try, if I have a model that needs to be that bright and shiny I usually pick a different bright color than metallics.
Finally caught up on this blog. I love what you did with Bilbo Baggins, perhaps especially the basing (he looks like he really is at home in Bag End!). And that Ork Warboss is pretty badass, too. Looking forward to seeing you tackle Space Hulk!
Cheers fella. Really happy how Bilbo came out. The basing was a last minute thing thanks to an idea from Paradigm. All hail the mighty green stuff!!! Up early to get some more done on the stealer and termie. SH will be a on/off thing for a while I reckon - so much other stuff to be doing too lol
Cheers Az. The materials needed to have a stolen, worn, cobbled together look. Was very tempted to put a commissar's red stripe down the trousers but that would have have to have been one seriously chunky commissar!!!!
Painting a stealer (playing with painting with washes rather than just paint layers) and the space hulk captain today (practice face/ skin - something I really need to do more of)
Happy with the face. A glaze or two to tone it back to looking more weathered yet to go I think.
The stealer I'm happy with. Don't usually paint any sort of nids as I'm not a fan of them at all. But stealers, stealers have good memories for me from playing space hulk first ed. on my folks' dining room tables many moons ago so it's definitely time to revisit them. Working on light glare and cast shadows for the stealer scheme. Fun so far
What kind of glaze do you use for skin? Do you have to make it yourself, or does someone make one that works well on skin?
Also, I noticed in your "great Sunday" picture that you have that paint chart on your wall. I have mine put up near my hobby area too! (silly observation, but hey!) Great minds really do think alike!
Space Hulk stuff is looking good. I like the pale, fleshy scheme you've come up with for the Genestealers. Your workspace looks very neat and compact as well. Hopefully one day I'll worm my way to look a bit more like yours!
@zergsmasher - the human skin or the 'stealer? I make up my own glazes. Usually a mix of mid or the base tone, shade, lahriman medium and water to taste. The stealer here has been mostly washes so far
@ Az. Wanted an anaemic looking pallid tone as they were born in the darkness of the hulk.
Workspace is tidy now. Was an absolute warzone while building the kataphron conversion. Utter chaos. All clean and tidy now again....... For now
Loads done today. Well happy with the progress. Stealer's carapace needs a glaze of black more I think and then some satin. Want it to be kinda beetle~ish. Coming along, coming along. Calling it a day and off to get some snooze
Quick, badly shot WiP. Made a start on the metal. Crikey this fellas got a lot of bling!! Lovely lovely fig though that cloak is a pain in the bolters!!
Quick shot before I call it a night. First genestealer done gonna leave him at that before I start fiddling some more. Next few should be quicker as he was all about recipe and method. Dirty bug!!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Gonna try and get 4 or 5 (ha) more done over the weekend. Termie should be finished this evening......ish
It's the Chuseok weekend over here (Korean thanksgiving holiday) so 4 day weekend!!! We're not traveling but staying home so plenty of painting should get done. Made a start on a group of 'stealers rather than painting them one at a time. Got primary metals, the basecoats laid down and the first shadings done. Some real fethers of nooks and crannies to get in at on the big fella and probably should have painted him in sub- assembly as usual but hey ho there we go!! Happy Chuseok all and as Jah says 'paint like yea got a pair' lol
evildrcheese wrote:Excellent work. Love you Warboss you completed previously and those Space Hulk models are going to make an awesome set once they're done.
Keep it up.
D
Thx fella - was very happy with the warboss. first ever ork so was a bit of a 'feth - hope this works out (esp as not my fig)' lol. The Hulk figs really are gorgeous. will take a while to get them all done but we'll get there
angelofvengeance wrote:Not been in here for a bit.. Sgt Lorenzo is looking fantastic! As are the filthy xenos...
Cheers AoV - not a fan of Blood Angels much; their reds are just a bit ick. So did the sarge there up in a darker tone and made him more of the flesh tearers with the black pauldrons. Looks a lot more worn and actually like armour that made it through battles. Still need to finish him up - cloak, metals and then lotsa weathering and damage - he's on a hulk fighting for his life though endless hordes of filthy bugs after all!!!!
Finally so updatage. After loadsa RL stuff recently actually getting some paint down again. 'Stealers are finally nearly done. Just bits n bobs still to complete and the sergeant has some finishing touches to get done too. Happy with the scheme, should look suitably creepy crawly space hulky buggy when all done
on a side note... my big box of FW stuff arrived safe n sound at my house......in Ireland.....on 78 days till I get my grubby little paws on that haul lol
Not at all Para. The flesh work is almost entirely rakarth flesh, paint wise. lots n lots of really thing layers to get that pale chalky tone. The shadow sides are done with rakarath and a little tau light ochre mixed in. Lots of washes, firstly seraphim sepia after the base layers, then later agrax into the dark shaded areas and a touch of nuln. the faces dont get that wash but a reikland fleshshade instead. more rakarth and any areas that are realy exposed and subject to the direct light get a little pallid wych mixed in. The claws and carpace are black adn xv88 mixed until it loses its brown adn takes on an olivey green tone. That gets a final wash with camoshade on the carapce and also where the cara meets the flesh. the maws are/will washed with thinned down BFTBG and then blood splatter is painted on undiluted. Tht's basically it....more or less
Final WiPs of these fellas before I (hopefully) get them all finished up tomoro. First guy is the test bug. Rest all into final stages. Just the termie hats, powders, and blood left to do. Really happy how they've come along. Hope yez like em
That BroodLord looks absolutely horrifying. In a good way. I always did like the new Space Hulk figures, but everyone went mental for the Terminators. It's great to see some love for the Genestealers!
I keep clipping bristles off it to use as armatures for the drips. Toothbrush bristles are perfectly thin enough but still durable enough to hold paint. Clip a few off, dap of superglue to fix them in the right place and then go back with a cocktail stick and more superglue later to secure them fully. Paint with layers/globs of BFTBG once the glue is totally dry. First tried it on the Solitaire I did a wee while back...and then on the skyweaver bike's harlie's glaive. Worked much better the second time as I didnt lay the paint on so thick
Thx fella 'Stealers are finished now and creeping me the hell out!!! Gonna try and get some proper pics of them taken later on. 5 down, 18 to go. Think I'll take a break from the bugs and onto somthing even more....sinister next ('')
Bash the Bosh wrote: That BroodLord looks absolutely horrifying. In a good way. I always did like the new Space Hulk figures, but everyone went mental for the Terminators. It's great to see some love for the Genestealers!
Cheers Bash. The termies are pretty tidy too. Lovely detail n all that but the 'stealers are pretty gorgeously done. Poses are aces and having them creaping around, crawling over and bursting through bits of scenery really gives them loads of character
@LeCaty - cultist???
Automatically Appended Next Post: First batch of 'stealers from the Space Hulk box finally finished and phot'd. Hope ye like them. Did a fair bit of research and such for this wee group. H.R.Giger's work especially and of course rewatching all the Aliens movies! Constantly hitting up google image for 'blood splatter' may have raised a flag or two with some nosey agencies

Yikes! Those bugs are scary! Nice work as always, and I'm sure the other 'stealers will be just as cool. 2 questions: Did you use GW's Blood for the Blood God for the blood, and if so, are there any special tricks you recommend for making it look good? I am thinking of using it on some of my Khorne Daemonkin models to make it look like they've done some wet work, so any quick tips or tricks?
@lecacty - ahhhh. He's a standin until I get a space wolf to go in the dio. Painted those cultists a while back. Was happy how that fella turned out
@zergsmasher. Yup it's BFTBG paint. Great stuff. Try applying it in different ways from the brush to get different effects. It does dry quickly enough though so use a wet palette. It also makes a great glaze when watered down. Good background of older blood in the recesses when used that way
With the stealers done for now, time to move into something else! Love this guy - DA haemonculus. Loved the fig for ages and been dying to get him. Really detailed and delicate wee sicko so gonna have to paint him in pieces. How fitting is that! Lol

To be honest, there's not a single model in the Dark Eldar range I don't like. Really nice sculpts all round!
Spent the weekend mostly working on the freeblade knight so poor wee haemonculus hasn't seen much progress. Got his innards done and initial steps on his skin though. Half day Wednesday tomoro though so hopefully get his skin cloak well under way at least. Still need to think up and make a wee dio for him too
If you've got the materials, some kind of 'Frankenstein's Laboratory' dio would suit him. Jars of random crap, a blood-stained operating table, scraps of dissected 'subjects' lying around... could be very freaky, and suit the mini perfectly.
I'll agree with the sentiment that these DE post-reboot a few years back have just been stellar; If I were still in the habit of building armies, I'd certainly have done a force by now...
So far, am thinking of some DE~ish stairs with the doctor there at the top looking down on a 'patient'of some sort crawling at the bottom. Some sort of glib but twisted comment will be involved to tie him into this month's comp
Did so much work on the knight Titan this weekend this poor fella got totally ignored. Felt a bout guilty so did a bit of paint on his skin, cloak and spine. Gonna back burn the knight for a few days so can get this guy some proper attention.
Lovely work on a gruesome mini! May have to add that heamy to my 'models I NEED to paint one day' list, as he seems chock-full of nice details and textures to work on.
get him!!! truely lovely fig....well....'lovely' as much as deviant, sick, twisted, fleshsculptor of a creature can be!!! Great fig though. Wanted to get him for ages. Defintely worth the high single fig price. So many little details and bits that bring out the character.
Put the knight on the back shelf for now so can get this guy sorted. Few more bits and bobs to finish up and paint the base too. But he's finally all assembled. Most intricate fiddly fig I've painted thus far. Going from the big paint of the knight to the tiny little fluid pipes of the haemonculus is a nice jump. Hope you like the purples Minus hopefully get him finished tomoro and then it's time to paint up his Halloween 'toy' lol
Lovely work! I really like your work on the cloak. The subtle differences in colour of the patches, and the blood splatter on the inside is spot on. Very realistic.
Thx ckig. It''s a lovely fig to paint if incredibly fiddly. The cloak is fun. I painted it all with glazes to try and keep it looking worn and a bit more subtle. The inside is just heavily thinned down blood for the blood god paint but it came out pretty well. Really happy with it thx again
Looks nice. I really like the idea of a dark eldar painted with light tones.
And OF COURSE I like the purple, especially the fade from bone to purple on his tail or whatever it's supposed to be... ^^
Well that's Minus the Merciless, the dark eldar haemonculus done!! Added a rather unfortunate guardsman in just for gaks n giggles. Poor fella has lost his eyes and seems to be literally crawling along on his guts. My camera is being an arse so had to use the wife's. Not keen on it at all. I'll need to do some proper shots later on when my camera stops being such a gimp. Still - here's a few wee shots to have a look at
"Trick or Treat little monkeigh? They are but two sides of the same deliciously depraved coin don't you see....oh...no - of course you don't....."
Love the work you've put into that Haemy. I'm not typically a fan of the covens sections of DE but I must admit I really would love to paint up a Haemy one day, the model is just so gorgeous with tons of little details that really make it pop.
Cheers man. It really is a gorgeous fig. Been wanting to paint this guy up for ages. It's pretty fiddly and needs to be painted in pieces but really worth it
Cheers EDC. The base is an old one I made for something else but it fits these figs nicely too. Fun and nasty fig to paint that haemonculus. Back to the slightly less gruesome AdMech next - lol
Cheers (again!!) Az. He was fun and at a few points, a pain, to paint. Always loved that sculpt and was glad to finally get one painted up. Kept the colour palete fairly simple and fleshy earth tones. Think it suits his character nicely.
I need to make him a better dio base (at some point)
No wips or updates here at the mo. Busy workign on AdMEch over on the other thread
However....
came across this tidy wee kickstarter earlier. Gorgeous 54mm figs. Pretty dark and twisted with what looks like a cracking storyline. Have a wee look yourselves and see if you like. A few of the figs are NSFW.
I've pledged for one of the characters. May get a few of the others down the line. Quite a few of them I like. I'd love to have a crack at some of the malifaux stuff but can't get them over here :( May pick some up though when I head back to Ireland in the new year
Malifaux stuff is definitely a treat to work on paint-wise, but the assembly makes even the more complex GW stuff look like simple lego in comparison! There are things like seperate tiny hands, limbs with connections so narrow you could sneeze in the next room and they're liable to fall off, and even in some cases a dozen parts for a single mini! It's pretty crazy.
Still, they are some of the nicest sculpts/designs out there if you like the aesthetic, so come highly recommended as and when you can get some!
The classic tiny Malifaux part being Yan Lo's beard, a tiny 2mm max separate beard for a miniature. It has led to the creation of "By Yan Lo's beard!" as a curse of bad fate/small parts in the Malifaux community. Think you would do some wonderful work on them Jan...any particular crew or faction that you are after?
Oh joy - fiddly figs!!!! I think the fiddliest yet for me was either the sydonian dragoon (those bloody cables on the inside of the legs) or the haemonculus. Actually I don't really mind fiddly that much. It just takes a little more planning as I'm one of those that always paints in pieces or sub assemblies.
There's quite a few of the malifaux figs n sets I've been eying up. Really like some of their darker stuff. Yup def gonna be picking up some in the near future - probably some of the Neverborn, though am really loving those Coryphee figs..... Lot of lovely figs there.....not sure 'lovely' is quite the right adjective though lol
It's been a year almost to the day since I decided to pick up brush again and get back into painting. Though I should empty the cabinet, get all the figs out and get a wee group shot. Not the best lit or quality sanp but nice to see everything all out together. A full size photo is spoilered as its rather large!!
Spoiler:
Damn but it's been a fun year - here's to many more
Very nice stuff, Jan! I may have to steal your idea and put up a shot of everything I have painted this year in my own blog, although I will wait until New Year's Eve to do it.
Well, the 2 characters are getting paint for the Dec comp. The cultists though........yeah......probably not till the new year. Knight is priority at the mo
'lot of folk are putting up P&M goals for the new year and that seems like a bloody fine idea. I lose bits of paper after about 2 minutes of putting them down, so hopefully here they will remain less..... loseable.
1. Not buying anymore kits/models (with the exception of the ruststalkers I'm buying tomorrow and C̶o̶r̶a̶x̶ The Nurse from Thirdman Studios (hehehe) that I'm going to order from CMON.....yeah good start on this resolution already >< lol) until I've got all the stuff I've already got finished.
2. Finish off my DV boxed set....not terribly hard this one - only Turmiel, Kranon and 1 squad of cultists to go.
3. Get stuck into the Space Hulk box I bought a few months ago. So far 4 stealers, the broodlord finsihed and one of the termies started. Fair bit of work here still to go.
4. Get my AdMech force finished up -Magos (still building), Scyllax unit (built and ready for priming), Thanatar Siege (still in bag), TechPriest (likewise), Skit Rangers (built, but still to be pinned and primed), Ruststalkers (see #1) & Inquisitor X + retinue (also still in blister pack) and built him a few armed followers from existing stuff I already have - no buying new stuff for this one.
5. FINALLY get to that Eldar wave serpent that's been sitting in its box in my cabinet for nearly a full year - build and paint it to go with my so far so tiny Mymearan craftworld force
6. Finish up the last two Harlequin troopers waiting to be done (primed and basecoated) and the Solitaire (neither primed nor even built)
7. Start back into some CSM stuff, starting with the possesed marines kit TP sent me
8. Get Buttery's Tanith trooper convereted, dio'd, painted and back to him along with the commisar in decent time. Also give Methebeast's Inifinity fig a similiar speedy turnaround
9. ONCE all of the above is achieved - then can buy new crack....I mean figs.....starting with the DV Chaos expansion box.
Agreed! I look forward to another year of you putting us all to shame with painting awesome minis! I'm very keen to see you take on the Infinity figure, there's a learning curve to them after doing GW stuff but once you wrap your head around that, they can be made stunningly good in far less time than you might think.
we'll see how it goes. Looking forward to painting this infinity fig. I'm not mad keen on a lot of their stuff but this Chimera fig is pretty damn gorgeous
Sounds like some grand plans right there! I had almost forgotten how awesome your Eldar are, so I'll be looking forward to that Wave Serpent especially.
Hey there Bottle 새해복많이받으세요!!! Hope you had a cracking new year's. Been an age since I painted Mymearan elder so that wave serpent will take a bit of thinking. Will get there though -lol. What about you - plans for 2016? Finally gonna be seeing a little grim dark from you?
Spent most of the weekend building and pinning rather than painting. Thought I'd better bite the bullet and try to get this Infinity Chimera lass underway. I won't get to her paint for a week or two yet but while all the snips, files and whatnot wee out from doing skits and rusters, reckoned I'd get her sorted as well. Omg what a pain to trim and put together. Is this typical for CB product? No instructions or diagrams of any sort. The parts don't seem to have any notch and groove or the like to guide the parts into a snug fit and the hands are so non-sculpted it's hard to figure out exactly what angle they go on at!! I think there maybe a little GS filler needed but impossible to tell until she's had a primer put down. That said, she's a lovely character and the paint should be a lot of fun but Corvus Ballsupi need to sort out their multipart casting and assembly style. Not fun at all
Really excited to see your take on Infinity. I have been tempted to buy a set to paint as well. What colour undercoat will you be working from and will you try any NMM as commonly seen on Infinity models?
The Chimera is one of the most nightmarish ones in the whole line, but quite a few miniatures of the older range have some kindproblems (mainly the deceased Exrah bugs, but also the Aleph line remotes), digital sculpting thankfully solved (most) of it.
And no, there is no instructions on anything, luckily on most infantry the joints have some kind of guideline sculpted so they only fit one way, but some TAGs (big stompy robots) are pretty annoying to put together.
Hey there Bottle. I'm gonna undercoat with a light blue/grey to start with and give it a light grey wash to pick out the details so can see what's what. Haven't decided 100% on the scheme yet as I've a load of other stuff to get done before it. NMM? Nah - not really that keen on NMM in any case - find it a bit flat and cartoonish for my taste. True metals will be the go - probably some nice coppery tones on her armour and a little weathered steel on the whip...maybe
Took a few minutes to throw a light prime down and watered wash so could see some detail and check the joins properly. Seems ok. Lovely wee sculpt overall. Lots of very thin layers and glazes ahead
That's the thing with Infinity; once you get to that stage, you're in for a treat as far as painting goes, it's just getting there that's not quite so fun!
Intrigued by your priming choice! Can't wait to see how it affects the paint on top of it. Ha, I thought you might say something like that about the metals. Cannot wait to see your take on the sculpt.
So, a rather awesome parcel from a certain awesomer commissar arrived the other day. Once I got through the Fort Knox worthy packing inside these little gems were awaiting. I now need to totally rearrange my painting schedule!!! The Tanith lasman and the female commissar I'll paint for them and included for my own joy are some of the most amazing and important figs GW have done - the first five of the Gaunt's Ghosts figs. We got Gaunt himself, one of the nicest commissar figs GW have done imho, M.O. Dorden - the details and the character put into this sculpt is so beautiful, Colm Corbec - the legend, the Tanith master sniper 'mad' Larks aka Hlaine Larkin - the favourite character of many - they've really captured his character beautifully and finally Brin Milo and his Tanith pipes. So excited about these figs and thanks soooooooo much.
My primary paint board is totally gonna have to be rearranged now. Need to get on and get the Chimera finished - have got as far as priming and basing her skin. Then it's onto the female commissar, which we've decided will be more of a navy look with a dark dusty naval blue rather than the usual black of the commisariat and the Tanith lasman, which I'm gonna turn into a sniper with a minor conversion to give him a long las with some camo wrapping and a wee dio to tie him to the farmhouse siege from 'straight silver'. Once those are done and mailed back - it'll be the time of the Tanith. Cannot wait. These are defintiely all gonna be glaze jobs as the details are so fine and beautifully sculpted. Anyone know who was responsible for sculpting the Tanith figs? And what other characters were released?
Your description of the chimera does not match my own experience with CB stuff. Usually the flash and moldlines are minimal to the point of nearly being able to ignore them. They are all metal so they'll never be as easy to assemble as plastic, and given the aesthetic a lot of them do have some pretty fiddly parts.
She's a lovely sculpt - really nice pose and details barr the hands. The was a lot of trimming and smoothing to be done though. Seemed pretty amateurish in the casting. Once all cleaned up and assembled though she is a gorgeous figure
Ah the Gaunt's Ghosts models. I keep meaning to get hold of those for my self. The books are pretty much wholly responsible for getting me back into the hobby.
There were six in the set originally (don't worry, I didn't pay retail for these, they were all spares from lots and sales when I was bulking out my regiment).
The sixth is an un-named plasma gunner. I have a spare now that I'll stick in an envelope for completion's sake, next time I remember.
There were also four unnamed troopers. They came in packs of three at random.
Running mouthy trooper, aiming trooper (the one you have there), girl trooper, and fiddling with belt trooper.
Running mouthy trooper is an ugly bastard, and girl trooper has a bad case of coconut head.
lol - nice one BC. Been looking about on ebay and the unnamed ghost are pretty rare. Interesting choice arming the 6th of the boxed set with a ....plasma gun......do not once remember any of the Ghosts using one in the books......not a treadfether would have been a good choice. Sad they never made a fig of TryAgain Bragg though :(
You can convert "Ox" very well. He's cheap on eBay usually. Big bare armed guardsman with a torn off heavy bolter, broad face and little complexity on the figure. Clip his cap, fit a cloak, and he's as near as you're going to get.
And yeah, there was a lot of 70-100 of them for close to a grand last year. They're not easy to come by, especially the women. The other downside is no sergeant figure. I've been trying to work out what to do to mark one out in the squads.
Think he used victoria miniatures stuff for as the basis for a lot of them.
I'm not planning on ever going that far but definitely gonna collect the offical figs that Mark Bedford (?) sculpted and may 'make' a few of the other characters like Bragg and Rawne at ......some point along the way
Haven't got much painting in since I finished the Scyllax - just be prepping and assembling all the FW stuff I got over Christmas so reckoned I should get a move on . Made a decent start on the figs I'm painting for others. Got some of the base tones down on the CB chimera fig. Delicate wee fig to paint. Trying out a new shading way on her trousers and sleeves. Got the bases down and started on the flesh for Buttery's female commisar and the Tanith Ghost which I turned into a sniper with a wee simple conversion. Doubt I'll have them finished before I head back to Ireland next week but we'll see
She is pretty tiny. Highly detailed. Had to to put a dark wash over the primer to start with just to get an idea of all the detail before i strted planning a scheme out. The box photos and art are next to useless for that. Shés coming along though. Had a bit of fun trying out some wet-on-wet blending with layer adn wash on her leggings though
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just a little something that folk may find useful. I'm sure it's been mentioned elsewhere on Dak but I'm gonna bring it up again!! TP recently brought this cracking wee app to my attention so I bought it as it's pretty cheap and damn handy for eejits like me who either forget to write paint recipes and schemes down or do on the back of scraps of paper that then dissappear. It's the paintmymini app from CMON and after using it for just a day - I can say it's a right wee gem. Anyways - go look for yourselves. Well rec/mnd it
Bit of progress. Worked on the Ghost's skin and pretty happy with that. Human skin is one of the things I want and need to work on this year. Photo has gammied it up a bit. The rest of him still has highlights to go and I need to add a few more glazes to the famous Tanith camo cloak which has very much been a try out different things to try and get what's in my head onto fig. As BC (whom this is for) very generously gave me some of the other ghosts, I wanted to make a wee vignette for this ghost. It's a wink to one of my favourite episodes which a group of the ghosts are beseiged in an old farmhouse in Aexe Cardinal. So got the initial design done last week and initial build done this weekend. The GS you can see is actually a wooden floor

Massive fan of the app. Helping loads already. Takes a while to log the scheme elements initially which is a bit of a pain. However if you are doing a large force, or you are consistent with painting stuff like metals etc on all models you can add logged elements to any scheme by tapping a button. You then have a plan and shopping list for future projects with little effort. Worth a look. Ooh, and if you know someone who has it (*cough* Jan *cough*) they can send you their scheme for you to import for your own minis.
DISCLAIMER - I do not own shares in this company, I just think it's awesome
That's the wee vignette base all built now. Rather happy with it just need to seal and prime it in the morning and it'll be already for paint when I get back
Well, headed up to Dublin today for a touch of shopping and to pick up some GS as my shop in Korea is totally out and feth only knows when they'll get more in......and today served to prove that I utterly SUCK at New Year's Resolutions!!!! Resolution #1 was that I wasn't going to buy anymore figs (barring the ruststalkers and 'The Nurse' ) until I'd painted up all my present backlog.......let's have a look at how that charming piece of idiocy worked out shall we.............
at least I got the GS!! That Assassinorum game is a seriously good deal though. 100euro the lot. The 4 assassin figs are 96euro alone if you buy them seperately. (more self-justifcation )
See, I'm now imagining you went on some kind of epic trek from Korea to Dublin just to get some Green Stuff!
Looking forward to you tackling the EF set, not only are the assassins rather awesome but the Chaos Terminator Lord is one of the best kits GW produce. Awesome array of parts to work with, and probably quite easy to put your own twist on with some conversion work.
Yeah - was pretty surprised with the Chaos Lord - double sprue with a serious load of parts - sweet - the bitz box will be happy
the blister was my 'why the hell not - thats a wkd fig' buy. It's a Guildball fig - Ghast of the Mortician's Guild. Haven't played the game but most of the figs are really nice so I decided what the hell. I ordered 'The Nurse' by Thirdman Studios the other day as well instead of getting Corax. Need to start studying up on skin painting now as it has a lot!
ahhh - well, I have the 20 cultists from the DV set which are the same as the EF cultists - so I'm thinking of just using them for play and then these 15 new cultists will using for conversions for AdMech and Inq.....not totally decided yet though
Was just sitting back and watching some PB vids and popped open this badboy I got yesterday. He's Ghast of the Mortician's Guild from Guildball. I got for no other reason than I quite dig their sculpts and I'm wanting to start doing more practice on skinwork. This fig is pretty cool so I got him. Not the cheapest at 21euro I think but just looking him over the now - seriously great quality cast. The details are pretty near perfect and there really is some nice detail work. I haven't done any clean up on him - this is the fig straight out of the blister - pretty ready to prime - well, I think there is one little nib that needs to be trimmed on the end of the chain - but that aside NO flash or gates or anything! Damn folks - bit of a contrast to some other companies.
Really impressed. Reckon I'll be collecting some of their other figs as there are some really really nice characters. Haavent seen much of Guildball about in the galleries - anyone else her paint or play it? Whatcha think?
I've not really looked into Guild Ball, but I hear great things about the game (apparently it's really taking off in some places) and the minis get rave reviews. There were some really nice ones (Alchemists, I think) posted in P&M earlier. I'm not normally one for sports games, but the aesthetics look great so I may have to look into it more.
They didn't have many of them at the flgs I went into yesterday but the ones they did have plus what I've seen about the net make me want a few more The Butchers, The Morticians, The Alchemists and the Fishermen all looked great
This being away and not able to hobby is turning out not to be much of a money saver at all!! Spending more while on hols than if I were back at my desk - meh c'est le vie - hobby on
Anyhow - nice new kickstarter just went live that I saw on BoW's weekender earlier called 'Shattered Earth'.
Pretty tidy backstory with lots of room for expansion, game is a skirmish one and most importantly.....the figs are bloody gorgeous. Some of the nicest I've seen from a KS in a while. Well rec/mnd you go and have a wee gander at it. Don't think there is any danger of it not being funded as it seems to have dotted all the 't's and crossed all the 'i's but then again what do I know!! Have a look n see what you think. Cult of the Dragon is where it's really at
So, it's my last night in Ireland before I head back to Korea tomorrow. And typically I decided to go rooting about in some old boxes of my stuff from when I lived in Scotland. It's been bothering me that all my old figs from when I was last painting (some 13 years ago I think) have been .....unlocateable!! In typical form, I left such excavations 'till the next before I leave. Long story a little shorter......paydirt!!!! I found them.....well most of my finished stuff. There's still some unaccounted for but hey, happy I found any!!!! I was building an Eldar army at the time so it's mostly aspect warriors and a few other odds n sods. All in all they're in great nick and a bit better painted than I remember which is nice. There's a few minor repairs needed and the Harlies need basing but all that will have to wait till the next time I'm back in Ireland - for now here they'll have to stay.
Anyhow - I snapped some quick photos with my ipad. Quality isnt the best but still nice to have some shots of them. Here's how Jan was putting the paint down 13 years ago!!!
seems pertinent considering what's to be released by GW soon!
remember this fella taking an age to finish!!
love(d) these sculpts
the aspect exarchs are still some of GW's best figs ever imho
feth - thin your paints '13years ago Jan' lol
still pretty happy with this guy
layered blends.....crikey
this one is just for Dakka's own lord of purple, Minus!!
urrgghhhhhhh ><
original Harlies
the whole horde!!!
Well, hope you enjoyed that little trip down memory lane!!!
Haha, nice stuff! That Avatar is wonderfully retro! All pretty decent stuff, actually, even those a fair bit of it doesn't compare to what you're doing now, stuff like the blends on those weapon platforms and the Wraithlord's chequered fist are still impressive!
An excellent trip down memory lane Jan, and still some excellent work. My first ever metal minis were the original Eldar Guardian set with plastic arms and weapons so these have a big place in my hobby history.
Wait a few more years with this lot and you can probably retire! Have a swift and easy journey home.
Cheers folks. Wish I could bring them back with me the now and get them fixed up but just not poss this trip. I'm gonna just bring the firedragon exarch this time as I thnk he's pretty much my favourite. Really like the sculpt and still really happy with the colour scheme i went with. Tis really nice finding my fig from yesteryear as i was beginig to think they'd been lost for good
Those pics just show how the 40k models have changed their looks over the years. Looks like your painting has definitely improved, although the old stuff does look pretty good!
ZergSmasher wrote: Those pics just show how the 40k models have changed their looks over the years. Looks like your painting has definitely improved, although the old stuff does look pretty good!
Some of that stuff is newer sculpts that replaced older ones. RT to 3rd(ish) at my guess for the lot. At least on the age of the sculpts, no idea when Jan picked them up. But the Eldar heavy weapon team would not be out of place on a modern table, aesthetically.
@EDC - love that socerer guy. I only brought 3 of those figs back to Korea back with me this time. The FireDragon exacrch, that socerer and a partially painted Hive Spyrer in a Yeld rig which I'll paint up soon
Automatically Appended Next Post: The joys of 24 hour travel - utterly exhausted and then wake up 2 hours later ready to go! Let's have a coffee and catalogue all the stuff on my desk adn in my cabinet awaiting paint. I got a 'few'new bits n bobs when I was home and a few things were delivered for me while I was away but THAT IS IT.....until I clear what's been accumlating.......and this time I mean it!!!
So here's what's to be done and how far along some of them are. 'Boxed' means absolutely bugger all has done save maybe a little building.
The Nurse (boxed)
Mortician's Guild 'Ghast' (boxed)
Mortician's Guild 'Silence' (boxed)
Possesssed CSM (5) (boxed)
Thanatar Automata ( built, base built & primed )
CSM Sorcerer Lord (boxed)

Vindicare Assassin (boxed)
Eversor Assassin (boxed)

Chaos Cultists with autoguns (10) boxed)
Space Hulk Terminators ( 11 ) (boxed)
Space Hulk Genestalers (18) (boxed)
Doors (20) (boxed)
Eldar Wave Serpent (boxed)
I'll be picking some stuff out of this list of undying shame each month for Az's thread and (hopefully) be able to find something appropriate as well for Para's comps. Plan is to get the entire backlog cleared by the end of June.........
So that's the list done and ready to get stuff doneand ticked off.
When I arrived back in Korea some goodies were waiting for me
Firstly, my bases fro Fenris Games finally arrived after 6 weeks of waiting. These are for the Space Hulk termies as really don't like the 'bases' they come on. Cutting all the formed bases off is gonna be a gakfest to do but thank feth for Mr. Dremel Really nice bases - nothing too too fancy but perfect to fit in with the board pieces from the game.
Secondly and more excitingly (is that even a word?!!!) My 'Nurse' arrived from CMON - big ups to that crowd for some seriously fast delivery- about a week from order to delivery; US>Korea. The Nurse is my big Spring project to try and level up my painting. She's from Thirdman Studios and originally sculpted by (iirc) Aragon Marks.
She is stunning - beautiful sculpt and a gorgeous cast. There's a bit of flash to be sorted but that aside - tiny vents and gates so really easy to perp and zero warpage - the scythe is straight as an arrow. No hot water required there!!
I got sent the alt box. The painted version on the left is by Ben Komets and the version painted on the right is by Martin Grandbarbe. Not sure which I like more. I do prefer Ben's porcelin white mash but I love the pale unhealthy skin by Martin.
Anyways this is my big Spring paint as I said - adore the figure but my real focus here is going to be on 'skin'. Skin is something I havent done a huge amount of and someting I defintely need to work on. I'll be painting a few other figs (notably two from the Guildball morticians guild; Silence & Ghast) first to start getting some practive in for the tones and scheme I want for the nurse. I think for her I'm gonna go mostly with loaded brush and glazes for the skin and avoid washes and I want a much softer and faded look than hard hard contrasts but not 100% sure yet. Reading and watching lots of tutorials and articles first so I'm penciling her in for April//May for the paint. Really want to do her justice and get it right
Loved it from the first time I saw it. Sadly their KS failed to get funded but they had already done a limited release of the nurse so I was able to find one over at the CMON store.
First up (my feb target over on Az's thread) are basically the first 5 things on the list. First thing is to get partially painted and started figs done and off the bench and then on to the bigger stuff
Don’t forget to prep a space marine to paint in March. Someone has to take Januine down a peg. Wait, which blog am I replying to? Damn.
So what you're saying is that we should have a comp for everyone else, and then a separate thread where This-Blog-Jan tries to beat Other-Blog-Jan while going up against Different-Blog-Jan, because that way, at least someone, even if it's Jan, is going to beat him? Sounds fair, motion passed!

I don’t know, that’s starting to sound either like some cheep sci-fi cross-time/alternate reality paradox plot, or some feel-good moralistic “The only true enemy is the one within us” thing. The sensible thing is for the rest of us to step up our game.
Honestly, I think Jan is going to have a hard time winning next month. There are a number of other good painters out there, and Space Marines is an area a lot of them work in. A lot depends, of course, on who enters.
Havent painted any SM stuff up in a while....think the last was those CSM Chosen from DV. They were fun. I dont paint a lot of SM so next month is gonna need some thinking out for me...hmmmm
Bit of afternoon paint. Made a start on the farmhouse vignette base for the Tanith sniper. Coming along. Quite happy with the interior plaster wall. Needs a little damp staining next I think
Bloody awful photo - will try and get some proper photos done in the next few days. Anyhow - that's the chimera finished now save a final check over. Tricky tricky fig from start to finish but pretty happy how she turned out.
Allllllllrrrrighttty then!!! Spent the day fething about with camera and getting some proper photos done. Here's some of them (others are in other plogs)
The Gaunt's Ghost Vignette - Wee scene from the farmhouse siege on Aexe Cardinal. Love thinking, designing, building and making this from start to finsh so much. So much in fact that I'm planning on doing something similar for each of the Gaunt's Ghosts figs I have - For Tanith!!!!
For the same person was a special OOP lady commissar. They said they wnated her to have a naval look so I went with the dark grey/blue overcoat rather than the usual black one of the Commissariat
Next up is an Infinity fig - Chimera of the Nomads and a group of commandos with a ridiculous long german name. She was.......a bit of a challenge. Happy with how she turned out though.
And finally something of my own - finally got the first of the Space Hulk terminators finished. Sgt. Lorenzo. These guys are seriously gorgeous figs, but take a seriously long time to complete as they have sooooooo much detail. Ah well - defintely worth it
Great to start getting stuff checked off the backlog list!!! And so we're onto March. Lots to get done this month - check over on Az's blog to see this month's goals
Cracking stuff! Good to see Sarge Lorenzo off the desk and into the fray as well, definitely worth the time spent! All the BA from SH will be a treat to see when you get around to them.
If you want a challenge for the Ghosts dio, how about making each one a little vignette like that, but make them so they all fit together for one mega-display of the whole gang?
That wee vignette was for Buttery but he very VERY kindly gave me 5 of the other Ghosts. So I have Gaunt, Milo, Corbec, Dorden and the main madman himself - Larkin!! The plan is to make a wee vignette for each one showing a special or important point scene for the character from the books. I've pretty much settled on Lark's scene - when he was 'visited' by Saint Sabbat when he was in postion to take out a high ranking enemy commander. Really powerful and important scene. Quite sad as well. As for the other four......still undecided. If anyone has any ideas or favourite scenes for the above characters - suggest away please. It must be a scene that was really a focused important one for said character
Cheers Nerdy - Much as I dislike BA, I really enjoyed painting him. Love all the detail, 34(ish) gems though.......Sgt. BloodyBlingBling is what the wife has named him now - lol. Played around with all the golds alot trying out differnt things. 1 down and 11 more to go o.O'
You work rate is insane, so much good stuff. That Infinity fig is making me think of Marvel's ultimate superhorine: Squirrel Girl.
We'll gloss over that little comment about the noble Sons of Sanguinius... My own SH terminators have been sitting around forever while I build up the nerve and patience to have a crack at them. Seeing such nice, painted examples is a real help.
Cheers fella. Gotta get into those SH figs. They are cracking (for BAs )
That vignette was/is one of my hobby highlights so far this year. A joy from start to finish
I'm so bloody behind in my Plogging. Wish I didn't have to go to work! Anyway, an awesome load of stuff painted/finished recently, and I love the old lead. I'm wondering though - why couldn't you bring it with you?
@ Az -I was prety busy while at home so didnt really start rooting through boxes until the night before I was leaving to come back to Korea. By the time I found all those old lead figs from many moons ago, I was already all packed and didnt really have the time or space to proper get them sorted for the trip back. I'll pick them up next time I'm back in Ireland though. There is still some stuff that I havent found yet - mostly unpainted I think so will have to continue the search this summer!
@Zerg - Cheers fella. Am actually really really happy with how the wee sniper vignette turned out. Cool making and painting something from books I really enjoyed - could almost hear the sounds of 'hotshot' las rounds and the screams of the dying Pact as I painted him up!!! Was sorry to see him go but he's off to a great home so all is good.
Have started on another of the SH termies today- Brother Goriel. He's (thankfully) nowhere near as blinged out as the Sgt. (34 gems - ffs!!!) but he is grabbing a ripped out 'stealer head and spine though.....nice!!!!
Wednesday!! Finish work at lunchtime!!! Head home and my new (second) display cabinet had arrived. 8282 and get building. Much less swearing involved this time than with the first one!! I now actually have spare space ( that's never gonna last) and everything is much less cramped. My growing taghmata force of Achlys III gets the top shelves across the two cases.. DV takes the second level and Space Hulk and (eventually) DW:O with take tier three...... Think I need another cabinet
Nice to see these minis get a worthy display case, they really do deserve to be shown off like that! You're going to have to get us some group shots of the stuff in there, now, though!
Students had a lovely day of tests in front of them today which nicely translated into bonus painting time for me took a break from the skit Rangers and made some progress on one of the space hulk termies - brother Goriel I think his name is. Got his red plate all done - 11 glaze layers all told I think. Well happy with it though. Black pauldrons next and then onto some metalwork
Lol - thx Para. It's actualy pretty relaxing and only took.......3 hours......crap, that can't be right o.O Photo is a bit pishy but well chuffed with the result That's the long/hard part done now. Onto the bling!
Wee bit of paint down on Brother G. Nice to get the golds and the hard metals done. Pretty happy with the dirty white wings too. Hopefully get the last details done in the next day or two
