Greetings Dakka!

I have finally started the arduous project of restarting my Blood Angels. Not in earnest, but I'm taking the first step by rebuilding the Captain which will lead my Blood Angels and, hopefully, getting him painted up.

First, a little background on this character. I first built a Blood Angels Captain many, many years ago, not long after I got into 40k and chose Blood Angels as my first force. It was 3rd edition, and I really really enjoyed the army and how it played.

I'll provide some pictures of this first version later in the thread here, to show how far I've managed to come over the years. He's still one of the better painted marines I've ever managed, and for a first time at converting, I was pleased. This character was eventually named Captain Aedus, and I fielded him as my Battle Company's Captain (the 5th Battle Company, now known as the "Daemonbanes" since a few codexes back). I honestly don't remember where I saw the name, but recalled I liked it and it seemed to suit the character. I later found out the name means Fire as an aside.

Now, fast forward to 2015. I've sold most of my old Blood Angels off several years back, in preparation for a grand rebuild of my Sons of Sanguinius. I've been keeping busy with a rather extensive Vostroyan Imperial Guard force, which I'm still working on slowly, but to help break up the monotony of painting all the tanks and flyers left to work on, I've decided to go ahead and start work on the Blood Angels HQ sections of my army to start. I plan to really take my time with them, try to improve my painting ability, and make them centerpieces of my force so to speak.

I've already 'built' the character out on paper. A Blood Angels Captain, equipped with the following Wargear: Artificer Armor, Iron Halo, Frag & Krak Grenades, Jump Pack, Digital Weapons, Hand Flamer, The Crown Angelic (Relic) and Valor's Edge (Relic). He totals out to be 175 Points, pretty high for a character with only a 4+ invulnerable save, and no eternal warrior, but at this point, I don't care about how much he costs, or if he's going to be a match for your average captain Smashfether. He's my vision of the Captain I want, and while he won't be a combat monster, he'll still be fairly effective against most opponents I think.

As of the 5th edition, and now 7th edition Blood Angels codex, the 5th Battle Company's Captain has now been named, and given a title along with a colloquial name for the Company mentioned above. So, Captain Aedus from long many years ago has morphed somewhat, and I've built him above to be somewhat in-line with his new full name, and title.

Captain Aedus Sendini, Keeper of the Arsenal, Commander of the 5th Blood Angels Battle Company; "Daemonbanes"

Parts list:

Jump Pack from The Sanguinor, allowing him to be 'mid flight'
Sanguinary Guard artificer armor legs (The set with the face mask formed on the left knee of the legs, specifically)
Artificer Armor torso from the new Blood Angels Upgrades pack
Head from the same Blood Angels Upgrade Pack (Death Mask head, representing the Crown Angelic)
One of the Sanguinary Guard swords (the one with the wing hilt, nicely represents the Valor's Edge I think)
Hand Flamer from the Death Company box.
One ornate shoulder pad from the Blood Angels Upgrades Pack with the Blood Angels emblem molded onto it.
One equally ornate Blood Angels shoulder pad from the Death Company box with a single raised blood drop and a raised portion over the top which says "Sanguinius" inside of it.
Grenade bits to be attached to the belt/waist area.

I intend to have him seem to be lifting off, arms down somewhat but held out from his sides, head pointed upwards slightly. I'm quite excited to see how this pose looks once I get the model fully put together.

Now, as for the painting, I intend to have his armor painted predominantly red, for the most part, with portions of it being gold. Specifically the left kneepad sculpted face, the Crown Angelic (obviously) and Iron Halo as well on top of the jump pack. There will also be detail work picked out in gold on the shoulder pads, as well as the casing of his hand flamer, and portions of the sword as well.

I'm waffling on what color to paint his jump pack wings. White seems to be the obvious choice, but I'm not sold on doing them stark white as yet. I may do them a black shade, instead, as the 5th Battle Company's emblem is a black blood drop on a red field, and it might look cool to have the wings be black with the red armor and gold accents. Would love some input on this if anyone cares to share their thoughts.

That all being said, preliminary assembly of some bits (Jump Pack, legs to torso, etc) and dry fitting has begun tonight, as well as cleaning/scraping the mold lines off of the model's component parts. The only bit I'm currently missing is the sword, and it's in-transit and should be here soonish. I'll be painting this model in stages and assembling it once all the parts are finished. Will have pictures posted once I get all the bits here and can lay them out for a 'before' photograph.

Thanks for reading if you got this far. I'll have progress posted soon! Take it easy for now everyone. Wish me luck.

Edit:

Uploaded Adeus Version #1 for comparison to the new version later. Painted circa 2003 or so, give or take.

I've never been able to paint a better power weapon. I've tried to recreate that effect and still haven't been able to replicate it as perfectly as I managed to here.

Take it easy for now folks.

Funnily enough, I started to build Aedus V. 2.0 several years ago, but my conversion-fu failed me and I couldn't quite get the mini to look the way I wanted it to. The upgraded two-headed axe wouldn't work the way I wanted and after multiple frustrating attempts, I set the project aside to come back to later. That failed attempt still sits in my bits drawer, waiting to be converted into something else cool some day. So technically this will be Aedus V. 3.0.

That said, here's a picture of the mini in it's component parts as it sits now, having been cleaned and prepped for base coating later.

The sword I'll be using is this one:

It's on it's way here, and hopefully will arrive by the weekend or the first of next week. If it does, I'll blue-tack the miniature together and lay down the primer coat of paint before starting to work on the mini in pieces, likely starting with the jump pack first.

I'll update as I make progress. Thanks for the reply Inspector.

Take it easy.

Seriously though, you are off to a promising start and that sword looks like it is going to set the model off nicely. Looking forward to the updates.

Thanks again for the encouragement Inspector, and to you as well, War Kitten!

My reasoning for using the larger sword is two-fold. Firstly, the Relic I intend to represent with is is an AP:2 power weapon, (Valor's Edge) and someone with the title of "Keeper of the Arsenal" should be suitably armed, I think. I can also feasibly use this weapon to represent a Relic Blade without issue if I decide to later run him with the Relic Blade option instead, but I'd rather spend the extra points and put the Valor's Edge on him with digital weapons as well to help allow one re-roll if I fail to wound with an attack.

Since his name means Fire, and since no other marine characters from other chapters can have one, I thought it would be cool and appropriate to give him a hand flamer.

One, it's kinda different. Not as effective as some weapons, but if he gets charged, he gets the Wall of Death rule for overwatch. Granted, it's only D3 ST:3 hits, but that's automatic hits versus only hitting on a 6 with any other pistol.

I'm excited to get started on this mini soon if I can. It's been a project I've had in the back of my mind for a long time now. I've been ready to restart my Angels for quite a while, and even though the current BA codex isn't quite up-to-snuff compared to the new marine codex, I'm still going to have fun with it and see how I can do with the army list all the same. After I finish up Aedus, I'll be working on a death company squad, a Librarian Dreadnought + drop pod, a Tactical Squad + drop pod, and an assault squad. We'll see how it goes.

Take it easy for now folks, and thanks again for the comments.

When you get around to restarting the army proper, maybe you can start a p&m blog and chronicle the rise of your blood angels

That Captain looks amazing. And I agree with War Kitten, if you do restart your Angels I'd love to see a P&M blog.

Thank you both, and yea once I get the army started back properly I'll start a P&M Blog to go along with my Guard blog that's already in process in the P&M Blog forum (and LONG overdue for an update I'll add!)

At this point, I need some blue-tack (I've misplaced it somehow...) and I'll be ready to start working on getting the base coat on the mini once I get the sword here. Once I either find.. or go buy more blue-tack, I'll snap a picture of the mini in dry-fit stage pre-primer and we'll be off to the races I hope.

Thanks again for the positive comments everyone, I greatly appreciate it.

More soon, till then, take it easy.

Ran to the store, since I couldn't find my blue-tack anywhere, and purchased a fresh pack of the stuff for getting Aedus put together and dry fit to make sure everything fits and lines up. I'm pretty happy with it, save for one very small detail.

(Also, I have an old, stripped version of the sword I'll be using, however this one is purely being used for dry fitting purposes as it got a little damaged after stripping.)

The raised portion at the top of the right shoulderpad is having minor issues with the crown portion of the helmet. Namely, the shoulder pad will likely need some minor modification in the form of removing the raised section of the shoulderpad. I don't know this for 100% yet, as I'm only working with dry fitting, but it looks like I'll be subbing some parts out, and making some minor modifications to others. Nothing insurmountable, but certainly something I'm going to need to play with before I paint.

I'm digging the way the model looks when dry fit together. Once I mount him to the raised display style base I'll be putting him on, the flight effect will be quite nice I think.

Thanks again for looking and I'll catch you guys on the flip side. Till then, take it easy.

Appreciate the kind words folks.

Update on progress: I've removed the upper portion of the right shoulder pad successfully & filed it down to smooth. I may do a little more work on it but I may just get some paint on it and see how it looks. We'll see.

I've also subbed out the left shoulder pad as well for a different one that doesn't have a lip/raised portion on the top of it it either. Eliminates the issue I'm having all together with interfering with the helmet.

All that's left at this point is getting the right arm in-hand and I'll be ready to start the process. I'm probably going to try and paint the mini in stages. I'll start with the head, and then torso/legs second. After that, I'll get the jump pack knocked out along with the base (One piece) and will do each arm & shoulder pad last before final assembly.

The question I have is this: Do I go with the initial thought of him taking flight, and lifting off while looking up? Or, do I instead have him hovering, looking downward and pointing the hand flamer forward/downward, firing it?

I like both ideas, Will have to keep dry fitting and see which I like better. Choices, choices.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now,

Yea, I do too War Kitten. The more I think about it the more I like it. I need a little fire blast/flame jet for the end of the hand flamer. I've seen them on other minis before but my google fu is failing me at present.

Will try the other option in dry-fit and post it up, see what people think of the two compared to each other.

Take it easy for now.

We have a winner!

Going to pick one of these up and try to use it if I can. May unbalance the model though as it's pewter..

Probably going to order it anyway and see if I can make it work. Would certainly be a cool effect, but may wait and see if it'll cause more wobbly model syndrome than it's worth.

Thoughts to ponder. We'll see. Take it easy everyone.

Yea, I'll be dry-fitting the pose to show here tomorrow once I finish my weekend of work. (Working 36 hours over 3 days is always tough. Eats into my hobby time way too damn much!)

I've got to go get a few pots of paint at the local hobby store as well, namely more Leadbelcher, a couple of fresh gold shades, Nulin Oil, and the Sepia wash as well the Red wash as well. Once that's done, I'll get started painting. Probably going to paint the helm first, test out how the gold will look and get the gem work finished, and then go from there to the torso & legs.

More to come later. Take it easy for now everyone and thanks for the feedback so far.

Ok, options time!

First, we have pose option one. Head turned upward, arms held out down to his sides, though out away from his body for balance, as he lifts into the air.

Next, we have the second option, which is Aedus hovering and firing his hand flamer at whatever heretic or enemy that has been unfortunate enough to find themselves in front of him.

I'm really liking option 2, honestly. It's more dynamic to me, and less reminiscent of the Sanguinor's pose.

Would love to see what people think, though. At this point, I'm just waiting on the sword, and decorative base to arrive in the mail. I'll be getting started on the mini this weekend in the mean time I hope.

Take it easy for now folks.

Forgot to show one other portion of the work done so far. Revised parts list from earlier; namely the shoulder pads

As can be seen, I've removed the raised portion of the shoulder pad for the right shoulder, which will be painted to show the company emblem (Black blood drop on a red field). Along with this, I've opted to go with a different left shoulder pad, showing the Blood Angels chapter symbol with some nice detailing on the bottom of the pad.

The other pad I was looking at for the left shoulder I accidentally clipped too close to the sprue, and didn't want to mess with using on this particular figure. It's serviceable, just not on what I consider to be a centerpiece model. Lesson learned: Always pay attention when you're clipping!

And Progress!

I've just finished off the Crown Angelic helm for Aedus. Very happy with the result!

Here's the now finished helm:

Very basic, black basecoat, then Zamesi Desert. Once that was dry, Ghenna Gold was applied, then Auric Armor Gold over that, so that the Ghenna (which is a reddish tinged gold) was still visible in the recesses. Then a Seraphim Sepia wash and final highlignt of the old mithril silver shade with another light coat of Sepia wash again after that. Gem work, and the neck/back of the head after that (Ironbreaker, then Nulin Oil wash with light touches of mithril silver again). The hair is Zamesi Desert with a heavy Seraphim Sepia wash and light dry-brushing of white over that to bring out the hair and make them look as though the hair is starting to grey slightly.

Very happy with the helm, looking forward to getting the rest of the miniature finished up.

Take it easy for now folks, more updates to come.

Further update: Gotten more work done on the torso. Painted the gems on his armor all black, (Onyx) since the emblem of the 5th Battle company is a Black drop of blood on a red field. Did the gold up to match the helm, painted the Purity Seals (The parchment has been painted too, future updates will show that, just painted them after I snapped the photos).

I then attached the head after dry-fitting the jump pack, and hand-flamer arm.

Here's where he sits.

Progress made, didn't get the arm finished but I did knock the shoulder pad out completely. Once I finish the arm and hand-flamer, I'll be able to get the left arm attached I hope.

Here's where the left shoulder pad sits currently:

Sorry for the slightly blurry photo. Basic gem work done on the chapter symbol, with the white wings on either side. I will incorporate more white into the miniature with his wings, but for now I like the starkness of the white on the red background. I like the shoulder pad a lot more with paint on it. Looks very good I think, and suitable for a Captain's artificer power armor.

Quick question to those following along. Do you like the 'polished onyx' looking gems I've done on his legs, torso and necklace? As I said, he's the commander of the 5th Battle Company, which is represented by a black tear drop shape on a red field. I wanted to have the Company logo be represented not only on his right shoulder, but also on his power armor as well. His necklace, his abdomen, and his shins to be specific. The sword will have a different colored gem in the hilt of it (Undecided on color as yet. Maybe yellow? Valor's edge is described as having a golden light flowing from it so that's the front-runner), and his helm of course has the red blood drop in the center. Both of these are relics of the chapter, versus being part of the 5th Battle Company's armory, so I didn't want to do the polished onyx gem look on those pieces.

Would a different colored gem look better, or detract from the theme I'm pushing for with the polished onyx?

Thanks for any feedback and I appreciate all the encouragement folks! More to come later. Take it easy for now.

I currently lack the words to describe how awesome I find your Captain.

I love the onyx gems you've done, I find that they work really well against the red.

As you said the Crown Angelic Helm and Valor's Edge are Chapter Relics not company ones so aren't likely to have the company specific onyx you've done so far. That being said though if once you've painted it and find the onyx word work and fit better then I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for that input Adamski, as well a the vote of confidence!

I want to paint the Valor's Edge hilt gem yellow, and try to do a yelllow energy effect on the sword itself if I can. The description of the weapon states it has a golden light on it, so I'm hoping I can pull that off. We'll see I suppose.

Glad the polished Onyx gems work. I wanted something different but that looked good. Glad you like how it turned out!

I'm at work tonight but hope to get more painting in over the weekend. Won't be able to really finish him till I get the base and sword in the mail, but I'll hopefully have the left arm finished, as well as the right shoulder pad and then left arm and sword . I'll start on the jump pack last, as that part is going to be rather labor intensive with all the white involved on the wings. Slowly but surely. Slowly but surely.

Look forward to more updates in the next few days. Till then, take it easy for now.

Update time!

I've made some good progress forward. First, one bit I'm actually kinda happy about. There is an issue with the bottom of the left foot of this mini. Namely, it's flat and barren of detail due to having a bit of rock that the forward portion of the foot was resting on. Since this model will be hovering off the ground, I had to remove said chunk of rock and shave the bottom of the foot flat. Not a big issue, though as I said there was no 'tread' on the bottom of the armor's foot. That has been rectified with the use of a micron pen and a (mostly) steady hand. Here's the result:

Not a perfect copy, but at a glance it passes muster, which is what I am going for. Odds are most people wouldn't have noticed, but I noticed, and while not exactly perfect, it's good enough for the standard I'm painting this mini too.

Now, that said, here's the rest of the progress I've made:

As you all can see, I've gone with the hovering while roasting heretics pose. Like it a lot better, and should be very cool with the final areal effect with the flying jump pack.

Any and all feedback appreciated. I'm going to be starting on the jump pack next, since I still don't have the sword, or decorative base in-hand yet. Hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow or Monday. I'm very excited to get this project finished and start working on some Death Company next (With Jump Packs of course). Aedus needs some bros to fly with after all!

Take it easy for now everyone, more updates to come.

And putting the paint brush down for the night. Made good headway on the right shoulder pad and got it finished up now.

I tried to do something a little different, and attempted to paint the teardrop shape on the shoulder pad to look like a larger piece of polished onyx compared to the gems on his legs, abdominal armor, and necklace.

I drew inspiration and am trying to achieve this kind of look:

that being said, here's the shoulder pad. I've done a teensy bit more work to the scroll work after the pictures were taken. Future updates will show the fully finished pad.

Does it look like onyx? I wanted the emblem to be black, but have some cool detail on it too. I like it, but would love to see if folks agree or disagree with the onyx look I've tried to accomplish here.

Once I get the right arm in, I'll get it knocked out, along with the sword, and then all I'll have left to finish up is the jump pack, which I've base coated and gotten the initial coat of red down on. Will be working on the jump pack a little along while waiting on the last bits to arrive in the mail.

Progress, Progress. Thanks for reading and I'll see you guys soon. Till then, take it easy for now.

Hey War Kitten, thank you for the continued show of support in the thread here. It's greatly appreciated!

Continuing to chip away at Aedus slowly. Been working on the jump pack this evening since the sword and base are both still en-route. Pausing mid-session to try and let my eyes rest, as well as to take stock of progress. I've completed the gold work, as well as the gem work (Going with the onyx theme again on the jump pack) ...

(And since starting this post I've since screwed up the gem on the chapter logo trying to make it perfect. )

Anyway, here's the jump pack in progress, before I screwed up the lower gem.

I'm laying down a thinned layer of black over the red undercoat to serve as the first layer below my build up to white on each wing. Will be doing one wing at a time as the second to last part of the mini, the last part will be the work on the purity seals and all of the scrolls hanging beneath the mini. I want to really take my time and make sure the wings and the scrolls all look correct.

More to come in the near future. Thanks for reading and I'll see y'all soon. Take it easy for now.

Thanks for the support once again Inspector! I appreciate it greatly!

Final update for the night. I got the Blood Angels chapter icon mostly finished up after repairing the gem in the center of it. Decided that since it's the chapter emblem I should paint that gem the traditional red gem instead of doing up like onyx such as the small gem/jewel directly beneath the iron halo.

Pretty pleased with the progress. I've got the one wing close to finished. Started with a base coat of the old Codex Grey color over the thinned black base coat, then a layer of the old Fortress Grey over the top of that, then I applied about 3 coats of very thinned down old Skull White to the wing. I'm probably going to have to do another two or three coats of white before I'm content with how it looks. The biggest issue I'm having at current is how to properly shade the recesses between the feathers on the wings. I'm rather at a loss, as in order to get the white to look correct, I have to thin the paint down pretty extensively, which means it has a tendency to flow into the recesses a little bit. I'm toying with the idea of a very thinned down wash, (2 or maybe even 3 parts water to 1 part wash) using either Asurmen Blue wash, or Nuln Oil and just letting it flow into the recesses only and then doing a final clean up layer or two of white. I don't know if it'll achieve the desired effect or not but at this point I don't know of any other method to try.

Once I get these wings wrapped up, I'll move on to painting the scroll work and purity seals. Once they're finished, I'll be in a holding pattern till the other bits arrive in the mail, hopefully some time this week if I'm lucky.

Here's the progress made tonight:

Thanks again for the encouragement. I'll be working the next two nights, so I won't have a ton of time to paint, but be looking for further updates later this week.

Take it easy for now folks.

Is that white really that bright or is that a bit of camera flash? If it really is that white then it looks exceptional, especially coming from the black underneath.

I think changing the Blood Angel symbol on the back of the jump pack from black to white works a lot better, not that there was anything wrong with black wings. My only query would be that the red gem doesn't pop as much as the black one did due to the rest of the red back pack.

Other than that I am absolutely loving your work, I think its absolutely brilliant and can't wait to see more.

As you said a watered down wash of nuln oil should help to bring out the recesses on the wings. Keep up the amazing work

Thank you kindly for that! I'm feeling particularly motivated to get this mini painted, and the encouragement shown by you and the other regular contributors to the thread is really helping me keep that motivation strong! I appreciate it greatly.

To answer your question, there's no flash on either of these most recent photos (Or any of this mini in the thread here, really). I'm holding the mini underneath my painting lamp and snapping a picture. The white isn't exactly perfect yet, but after another two coats (or maybe three.. or four...) of thinned down white it should be smooth and perfect I hope.

And yea, I was using the small wings on the back of the jump pack that make up the Blood Angels chapter symbol as a test bed for painting the larger jump pack wings. Starting with a black base coat over the red spray base, then using codex grey, then fortress grey (old GW colors) before going in and painting the Skull White (another old GW color) as the final layer in multiple thinned down layers. I'm very happy with how the chapter symbol came out, as well as the gold detailing, especially on the Iron Halo. I considered doing a brighter gem, but when you look at the other gems on the mini, such as the one on the helm, having the chapter logo be 'correct' (I.E., Red blood drop flanked by white wings) just felt the most appropriate, despite how red the mini already appears. I did paint the second smaller gem directly below the Iron Halo in the same polished onyx style. So the theme is consistent there if nothing else. I want the mini to be consistent across the entire piece, since I'm painting it in pieces. I've never really painted a mini in stages like this (that wasn't a tank or vehicle, etc) but instead assembled completely and then painted the mini from there. I've been worried that the different pieces wouldn't match up or be consistent once assembled. So far, I've been very happy to see that hasn't really been an issue.

War Kitten wrote:As you said a watered down wash of nuln oil should help to bring out the recesses on the wings. Keep up the amazing work

I hope so, I kinda want the white to have a cooler look, which is why I may try a very thinned blue wash instead first just to see how it looks by comparison. Not sure yet but am willing to experiment and see what gives me the look I've got in my head for the mini. Thank you again for the encouragement as well War Kitten. I really do appreciate it!

Take it easy for now folks. More updates to come!

Thank you kindly, Evildrcheese! I appreciate that! I think of myself as only having middling skill when it comes to painting, so it kinda catches me off guard when people offer compliments such as those. Thank you kindly sir.

Final update for the day. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting the ink work done on the one wing that's close to finished. Have another coat to paint on I expect, but here's the in shading done with one good coat of white to help clean up where the wash got a little heavy.

Feedback greatly appreciated! I'm trying to learn how to improve here.

Thanks for the feedback War Kitten! I was a little worried it made them look sloppy at first but after a coat of white it looked a lot better. One more coat to go on that wing and I think I can move on to wing # 2 and get that part wrapped up.

In other news, I finally got my sword in the mail this afternoon! I'll be starting on it soon in earnest to try and get the actual miniature finished up, so I can then knock the jump pack and base (once it arrives) out and do final assembly.

Look for another update soonish, hopefully tomorrow if nothing else once I get the sword arm cleaned & prepped for base coating. Tonight I'll be spending some time looking up methods to paint power weapons and trying to settle on how I want to paint the blade of Valor's Edge.

More to come soon. I'll see you guys shortly, and if anyone has any suggestions on cool/interesting ways to paint power weapons, do please share them here!

Thanks all, take it easy for now.

Ok! I'm not 'happy' with the final product, but I am contented? I think? It looks better than I thought it would, and I suppose that's what matters.

Also, thank you Adamski. I hope this particular offering doesn't disappoint.

First off, the description of the relic I'm trying to represent here: Valor's Edge (For any not familiar with it)

The ancient power sword known as Valour’s Edge is breathtakingly beautiful. Its blade
gleams with a golden light and its hilt is bejeweled and finely worked. Ancient records
suggest that the sword was presented to Sanguinius by the Emperor himself, a token to
commemorate some victory now lost to the past. Whatever the truth, Valour’s Edge is far
more than a mere decorative piece – able to gauge the worth of its wielder, the sword blazes
with golden fire when grasped by one whose intent it deems pure. In the hands of such an
individual, Valour’s Edge cuts a blinding swathe through the foe. Searing afterimages dance
in its wake, its razor edge sings a clarion note as it cleaves through the air, and neither
blade, armour nor shield can deflect its scything blows.

Excerpt above taken from the most current Blood Angels Codex.

So, I wanted to do the weapon up properly, and try to represent it as best I could given the description above. Here's where it sits before final assembly of the mini (except for attaching him to the Jump Pack, which will come later once I finish it and can attach it to the decorative base which I hope will arrive in the mail soon):

(Crap picture above, sorry. I will take a better one in a little bit)

As I said, it's probably not my best work, but it's the best I could manage and overall I do like it. Just hope it's not too.. flat? I don't know. I want it to look cool and hope I got the golden light energy field kinda feel.

Assembly will start in a moment. More pictures to come! Take it easy for now.

I think you did a great job with the sword, congrats, it fits the rest of the mini very well.

The only bit I am not quite sure about it the right hand side (as you hold the sword, the side with the wing) of the blade. It might have just a bit too much bare silver at the tip. Seems a bit picky but it jumped out at me when I saw the pictures.

Thank you all, and in a fever induced fit of what I can only describe as self punishment, I completely re-did the blade of the sword. Call it crazy, and it may look worse to everyone else, but I'm much much happier with it. Went with a different color combination and really took my time today to try and get a better energy arc effect on the sword. I'm very happy with it, especially on the interior of the sword, closest to the leg.

Tell me what you guys think, honestly. I don't mind if folks think it looks worse than before, but am genuinely interested in some feedback here.

First photo is a little out of focus, but you can see the detail fairly well I hope.

REALLY happy with that side of the blade, though both sides look better in my opinion.

So, what say you guys? Good? Better? Worse? Not really any difference?

I'll be starting back on the Jump pack now that I've got the sword sorted out and am happy with it.

Thanks for looking and take it easy for now.

It's better, but I think it is missing a little bit - could you shorten the arc just a tiny bit (like 2 arcs worth) and then maybe fatten it up a touch? Kinda half way between the two.

Either way it looks brilliant dude

See, I thought about that on round 2, and started to try it, but the blade is so dang long (It's taller than the marine wielding it truth be told!) that if I did that, I would fall prey to what I did on the first attempt and not have any of the energy arc/power field effect at the tip of the sword. Inspector pointed it out in his last reply above, and after looking at it, I agree that the tip/point of the blade seemed kinda bare and plain compared to the rest. I went with long thin arcs to make sure I didn't short myself as I did on the first energy field effect which, while cool looking, didn't wow me like this second attempt has. I really appreciate the feedback on it and will take your advice in the near future when I paint my next power weapon and see if I can't improve my technique.

Also, I'm happy you like it, kb_lock, and thank you for the kudos, for sure! I really hope the final product really has some character, and defines what it is to be a Captain in the Blood Angels.

More to come soon. Work has begun on the second jump pack wing. Updates will come as I reach further milestones.

Putting the paint brushes down now. Final update for the night.

I got the other wing to about 80% finished. One to two more coats of white, then shading and a final coat or two of white, then clean up around the top of the wing where the white meets the red, and I'll be ready to start on the scroll work and purity seals.

After that, it'll be waiting on the custom base to arrive in the mail, get it cleaned up, prepped, and then painted so that I can attach Aedus to it and the mini will be complete!

Here are the pictures:

Glad the second attempt looks better to more than just me. I just wish I'd have done it first and saved myself a good hour plus of painting time. Thank you for the support as always adamski!

As for the wings, I am reminded, unequivocally, how difficult it is to paint white. Sweet mercy why would anyone do this to themselves and paint an army white?? It's a nice change of pace to painting red doing the white wings, for sure, but that wing took four coats of white AFTER I painted two different coats of grey on. And it's still going to need another coat of white, then shading, then another coat or two of white after sharing.

That said. I LOVE the way it looks, but labor intensive is putting it lightly. Any sanguinary guard I might paint in the future are going to have their wings painted in a similar fashion, and I am dreading that so, so much. Haha!

More to come later, see you guys soon, thanks and take it easy for now.

White is SUCH A PAIN TO PAINT... still, totally worth it and am very happy with the crisp, cool white I was able to achieve.

More updates are forthcoming. I wish I could say I was nearing completion, but sadly I am still waiting on the decorative bases to arrive from Dragonforge. ( http://www.dragonforge.com/ )

I'll be using the Desert Wasteland hero base set (25mm) base, with a base extension ring around it to make it 32mm so he'll match the rest of the marines in the force. My other option/idea is to base him on the 40mm base and call it a day, as he will be rather tall by comparison, and it will help stability to have a larger base too. I'm likely going to go with a grey/ash waste colors instead so that my basing scheme is consistent between my Blood Angels and my Vostroyan Imperial Guard force.

Here's the bases painted up in a desert theme.
http://www.dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/Gaming%20bases/desert%20wasteland%20round%20base%20set/hero%20base%20set%20desert%20wasteland%201.jpg

Once the bases arrive I'll get the extension ring on the 25mm base, add basing material to it and then get both painted up and see which one i prefer for Aedus.

We'll see what we'll see. For now I'm off to get ready for work. Take it easy for now guys & gals.

Kind of an update, I went ahead and snapped a few pictures of Aedus blue-tacked to his jump pack to see how he looks with the white wings. I have to say, I'm very pleased! Take a look:

Work still left to do:

-Paint the parchment work and purity seals on the jump pack (Beginnings of that have been started, covering the bare metal with a solid coat of Zamesi Desert. Next step will be covering all parchment work with a second coat of the same color in prep for the parchment shading)
-Any final touch-up work on the jump pack after that's finished.
-Get decorative base in-hand, modified, basing added, and finally painted up.
-Mount jump pack to base.
-Attach Aedus to jump pack and do any last minute clean ups.

After that, I'll have a finished Captain, and will be ready to start on the next project!

Hope folks like the preview above. Thanks for looking and I'll catch you guys more soon.

Is it wrong that I want to bash you over the head and steal Aedus from you? I don't even have any sons of Sanguinius but for him I'd make an exception, well him and a story about the Battle Of Terra during the Horus Heresy written by William King I believe in an old White Dwarf. Always wanted some Scars, Fists and Blood Angels after reading that story. If you haven't seen it you should definitely check it out.

The only thing I'm curious/concerned/wary of is that base you showed us in the link. It just seems a bit too boring and bland compared to Aedus. Not that that is a bad thing as it means the attention is more on the model rather than base but I'm interested to see what you do with the base when you get it.

I'll be making it larger, for starters, by adding an extension ring to the 25mm base. Once that's done, I'm going to liven up the base with some extra detail and hopefully it'll set the base off somewhat, while not detracting from Aedus or taking emphasis off the mini itself.

I've not read that story but will take a look and try to find it now that I know of it. Thanks! I'm glad you like the way he's turned out so far also!

More updates to come. Thanks for the Kudos once again Adamski! And in closing, no head bashing please, I'm fragile!

Nicely done.

People talk about doing their whites but hardly ever show it. Or they show it and you feel overwhelmed.

I have started getting semi-serious at painting now and your white and black coat on the wing shows me how thick I need to make my paint consistency.

I have a bad habit of making my paints wash thin or too thick.

That captain looks stellar.

I'm glad I could help! Thank you for the kudos as well, Captains are supposed to be the true 'heros' of their chapter, and I want mine to look the part and actually seem heroic, able to inspire those they lead.

I'll be honest, the white painting here was an experiment gone wonderfully right. I use a palette, specifically an old GW paint pot top to be honest, and had a second paint pot top with a small amount of clean water on it. I would put a small amount of paint on top of one top, and add just the smallest amount of water (dipping the brush in the clean water) and then mixing it in on the paint pot lid with the white paint till it was the right consistency. If I started to run low, I'd add more white and then water till the consistency was correct again. If I noticed the white even starting to thicken up, I'd add a small amount of water. It's all about making sure your paint is at the right consistency when painting white.

It's time consuming since it takes several coats, but the end result is a brilliant white that is very eye catching.

Thanks so much for the comments and I hope to be able to get him finished up soon. We'll see I suppose. More updates to come. Take it easy for now.

Dangit. Gotta put my helmet back on. Thank you War Kitten, I have had a ton of fun painting this mini and appreciate your support and feedback as well.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't mind doing up a variety of Captains for different marine armies for people as a pseudo-side hobby.

Someone sends me a Captain, or similar Character they want modeled with their specific wargear and I then source parts with their help and put the mini together + paint it up with their feedback guiding me. I'd only charge for parts and a small fee for painting the mini + shipping once it was finished. I doubt there'd be much of a market, but I would REALLY enjoy it.

I think it would be a helluva lot of fun, anyway.

Thoughts to ponder. No updates as yet today on Aedus, as I'm working tonight and then hope to get a game of 40k in tomorrow on Labor Day with my Guard. We'll see what happens I suppose.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Ok!

I've got Aedus assembled. I'm very pleased, and I hope everyone else likes the nearly finished product. Still waiting on the base to arrive, but he's as finished as I can get him without the base in-hand.

First, here's the finished jump pack by itself.

Spoiler:

And now, without further ado.

Captain Aedus Sendini, Keeper of the Arsenal, Commander of the Blood Angels 5th Battle Company; "Daemonbanes"

He's been a LOT of fun to paint. I hope you guys like him, and I'll be adding more photos later once I get the base in and get it painted up in preparation for finishing the mini off completely.

More to come soon. Take it easy and thank you all for the continued support.

Looks bloody marvellous, absolutely love it more now that I've seen it all put together(minus base of course).

What purple did you use for the wax on the purity seals?

Are you thinking of doing any scribbles on the parchments?

Hey Adamski, thank you for that. I'm extremely happy with how the mini turned out. Will certainly be one of the centerpieces of my burgeoning Blood Angels army I hope.

As for the purple, I started out with a good coat of Xereus Purple, followed by a heavy wash of Ogryn Flesh (Older wash color, not sure of the current name for it). I then added some Screamer Pink to the edges/high points as a highlight and finished the seals with a Seraphim Sepia wash.

As for the parchment. I thought long and hard about scribbles on the parchment but can't seem to find a way to do it that I'm happy with. I've considered finding/sourcing some very small decals to perhaps transfer on to the parchment, but as with the scroll work on the right (sword arm) shoulder pad, I just am not skilled enough at doing small form lettering and minutia detail to make it look right. I'd love to scrawl "Aedus" on the right shoulder, but I would want it to be in the high gothic script and I just am not able to do it and make it look good enough to match the quality I've been able to achieve with the rest of the model. Same with the scroll work hanging down below the jump pack. I may try and do some brown scribbles later, but it's one of those scared to mess with it any more and wind up making the model look worse as a result.

I may yet attempt something, but at this point I'm terrified to touch the model any more honestly. Later tonight I may yet make an attempt at some limited detail on the scrolls. We'll see.

More to come later. Take it easy for now and thanks again for the kudos Adamski. It's greatly appreciated as always.

Thank you kindly for that, War Kitten! I'm pleased you like how Aedus turned out.

So, what's next? In an effort to keep the thread going while I wait on the base for Aedus to arrive, I've begun work on the first member of his Command Squad/Honor Guard: A Sanguiniary Novitiate conversion I did up a few years back that was initially planned to be a Sanguiniary High Priest (5th Edition Codex).

I'm having to do some surgery to the mini, using a new jump pack, new head (well, same head bit, but this one doesn't have paint on it!) breaking the mini off the old 25mm base, and starting the touch up process from where I left it mid-process many years ago. I'm not going to be able to use the shoulder pads I would have wanted to use, but they'll work for the Command Squad's Novitiate all the same. I'll try and work on the Jump Pack a little along first, and then move on to the head, then body + right arm, and do the Narthecium arm last.

Thanks guys, more to come as soon as I can get progress made. Take it easy for now.

Don't bother doing the parchment scribbles if you're scared of ruining it, we don't want you to have your hand slipping and they aren't important enough to risk ruining the look of Aedus.

Excited to hear that the thread will continue with more Blood Angel goodness.

Hey Adamski, thanks for that. I may yet attempt *something* on the scrolls, but what yet, I don't know. I have gone ahead and added a few very extreme hard edge highlights of Troll Slayer Orange to the front armor of Aedus. I'll snap a few updated pictures once I'm home from work later tomorrow. Nothing too noticeable but I do like that it sets the armor off a little bit.

Now, in other news... I can already see this Sanguinary Novitiate is going to cause some minor headaches. Nothing show stopping, but 'm really going to have to work to make this marine look good alongside Aedus. I am a bit better at painting now then I was wen I was painting this mini up and set it aside while still WIP a few years back.

I need to mach the red up, and then get the rest of the model caught up as well. I'll be trying to get the Jump Packs completed first, however. I may just go ahead and Assembly line style paint up two or three Jump Packs for the first few Honor Guard. We'll see, once I get back to my paint desk.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now everyone.

Thank you for that, Adamski.

I'm slowly starting to source parts for the Command Squad that the Novitiate will be a part of. The Company Champion will be next after I finish up the Novitiate, and then I'll start working on the three remaining squad members. I'm likely going to give one of them a power mace and bolt pistol, and the other two I'll just give Storm Shields (allowing them to retain a bolt pistol & Chain Sword, but not benefiting from the bonus attack of course).

That'll give me one model with 4x ST:7, AP:4 attacks on the charge, one model with 4x ST:5, AP:3 attacks on the charge, followed up by 9 ST:5 attacks from the remaining Novitiate and Storm Shield marines, all at initiative (Or +1 initiative if I'm using the Blood Angels formation). That is of course after Aedus gets his swings with Valor's Edge.

I like this concept as it keeps the squad relatively cheap, running at around 160 points for all five models. Not cheap, but that's with jump packs, feel no pain, two storm shields, two power weapons, (One mace, one Sword) and a combat shield as well. Should be a decently tough squad for only being 5 models strong I hope.

More to come in the near future. I'll update as I make progress. Talk to you guys soon, and take it easy for now.

I like to hope it'll be effective for the points, while being fairly fluffy as well, not to mention giving me some cool modeling opportunities to boot!

I'll mix in the odd Death Company marine while I'm working on this command squad too, that'll give me some variety to what I'm painting and help keep me from getting stagnant or tired of painting one color predominantly.

More to come soon, I'll catch ya later on Adamski.

From what I know of Blood Angels I'd say a Captain with Honour Guard and Sanguinary Priest is definitely fluffy.

I like the idea of mixing in some Death Company in to your painting/schedule, should stop you going colourblind/burnt out on one colour. Plus Death Company look cool. Talking of Death Company - are there enough parts that lack Blood Angel insignia/emblems that could be used for a Chaplain kitbash for another Chapter?

Minor update: No pictures as yet. I'm going to be trying to work on the Sanguiniary Novitiate's gold helmet tonight. Pictures will be posted of what I'll be working on once I get home this evening.

Once the head is completed, I'll get the Narthecium arm painted up and finished, then move on to the jump pack, and finally the already assembled torso, legs and right arm. Once that's done I'll assemble the mini and move on to the next one, which will likely be a Death Company Marine. That may change, however.

In other news, I'm going to be getting a game in this afternoon with my Guard + Culexis Assassin ally. I want to bring Aedus to the game with a small tactical squad and a few Death Company, but they'd be unpainted (save Aedus) and Aedus himself isn't finished since his base still hasn't arrived yet. Will likely ally him, plus a small marine force into my Guard soon to go ahead and see how he preforms later, and will update the thread here with pictures when I do.

More to come later. Thanks for reading, and take it easy for now everyone.

Thanks for that Adamski. Work has stymied this week due to real life obligations (Working 2 jobs at present, really puts a crimp on the painting the last few days).

Game went well yesterday, Maelstrom mission that went south round one. My opponent seized the initiative and proceeded to wreck my command Leman Russ Vanquisher with his opening volley, netting him slay the warlord out the gate. I was not amused. He also got first blood the following turn, and all three of his tactical objectives turn one too, so by the time I started my turn two he had five objective cards to my lowly two. We called the game at the top of turn 5 when he had 12 objectives completed to my six.

Was a great game, and a lot of fun, I was just never able to fight my way out from underneath after the first two turns and he kept getting objectives he could complete without much effort. Luck of the draw, I suppose.

Hopefully our rematch later this month will fare better, and I'll try out my Blood Angels + Guard against him and see how things go. Fingers crossed, he won't seize the initiative for a third game (he seized on me last time we played as well!).

More to come later. Will pick the paint brushes up once I get home this evening. Take it easy for now.

Ok, finally got some pictures of my Sanguinary Novitiate. Take a look:

I went with a lot of bits featuring the chalice, on the left shoulderpad, the helm, and jump pack. I also really liked the Sanguinius depiction holding the chalice on the right shoulder.

I will also note the minor conversion of moving the belt bits from the non-jump pack belted torso to one with the belts was tricky to say the least, but I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Hopefully folks like the update. More to come soon! Take it easy for now.

Yet another update:

I got a pack of ten decorative bases in the mail this afternoon, and I must admit I REALLY like these bases quite a lot.

Mine are unpainted, but this is what they look like with paint:

I'm very much tempted to use the front center base in that image for Aedus instead of the decorative set I've ordered and am still waiting to arrive.

I'll add a few other bits to the base, but its height would lend nicely to the elevated/in flight pose of Aedus.

I'm going to be working on the base some and see how I like it in the near future. Look for further updates soon. Take it easy folks.

Sorry its taken me a couple of days to comment on the awesome looking Novitiate, internet switchover took a while. I really love the gold for the helmet but I'm not a fan of the extended mouth/nose bit. Just my personal preference though, the work you've done on it looks exceptional.

As for the base I'd wait until you got the special one you ordered and compare that and the front centre one before you decide which one to use, we wouldn't want you to get base remorse.

Welcome back Adamski, glad to hear the internet switch was smooth, if not time consuming. And yea, I personally love the helmet, though I can appreciate that the aesthetic isn't appealing to everyone.

That's the thing I'm waffling on here regarding the base. I plan on using those bases for all of my Blood Angels (Painted up to kinda match the basing scheme I've used for my Vostroyan Guard, see attached sentinel image below) and wonder if I shouldn't use that base for consistencies sake instead of trying to convert a base up and use it, risking forcing the proverbial square peg into a round hole. I wouldn't have base remorse, per-se. I'll still be able to use those bases for other characters in my force after all, such as my already painted chaplain miniature that I'll snap some pictures off soon (Needs to be re-based in fact, so I may use the Dragon Forge base for him instead as he's on foot and would need something cool to make him stand out appropriately). I'm strongly considering taking a little while and painting up a second HQ choice for my Blood Angels once I finish off the Honor Guard. Namely, a Sanguinary Priest, or a Power Armored Librarian option. I may opt to do the Librarian as a Dreadnought Librarian instead however (as I love the concept of the Dreadnought Librarian I must admit), but having a Sanguinary Priest as a lower point HQ could be fun to plug in and use along-side or as an additional option to my Chaplain.

Anyway, musings aside, here's what my Basing Scheme looks like:

I want my armies to each have their own distinct feel and basing scheme, but one that works when put next to each other as allied forces on the tabletop thanks to the unified color scheme.

I'm going to paint the base I have up after some modifications & additions to see how I like it. As I said, having looked at it, and dry-fitting Aedus to the base, I really like how it looks. Once I'm home from my part time job this evening, I'll try and post some pictures up after getting some paint on it and see what you guys think.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

If you've already done dry fit with Aedus and the base and liked then I think you've answered your own question and have no need to waffle, to use your word. The key thing here is what you want, what you like. It's your army, it's your Captain, it's your showpiece and you're the one who has to look at it everyday so if you like it then do that, don't let randomers on the internet push you into another decision you may not be keen on just to appease them.

That being said if your work on Aedus(and Novitiate) is anything to go by I'm sure that no matter what base you choose you'll end up doing a proper job on it.

PS: Proper job means good, please excuse my dodgy regional English phrases

No worries sir I'm quite familiar with Proper and use it in my daily lexicon, which goes over rather interestingly with folks around where I live here in Mississippi.

That said, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this base. I got some paint on it, and felt it really did suit the character, so I went ahead and rolled with it. Also, I like that it's a proper 32 mm base versus a modified 25 mm base as well as an aside.

So. Without further ado, here he is, as finished as I can get him. I've got photos using my wife's much nicer (and newer!) camera and am quite happy with the results.

Take a look:

Captain Aedus Sendini, Keeper of the Arsenal, Commander of the Blood Angels V Battle Company; "Daemonbanes"

I'll take some better pictures using natural light this afternoon (it's a little after 08:00 hours here, sun's up but not in an ideal place to take pictures) that will hopefully get a little more detail shown.

Thanks so much for looking everyone. I hope to have more updates soon with the Novitiate, and keep carrying the thread here forward with more progress.

Just a quick update before bed, continuing to work on the first member of the command squad for Aedus.

Progress made has been on the left shoulder pad, and it's fairly close to being finished, if not completely finished. Pretty pleased with the white once again, sets off nicely with the gold chalice. I've been working on the narthecium as well as you can see. The arm proper will be the next step, starting with metallic, then shading and touchup of the red. Once the arm is finished, I'll start work on finishing up the jump pack, and finally get the lions share of the work done on the rest of the mini, which is already assembled (torso, legs, and right arm holding a chainsword).

Here's where the left arm sits at present:

Thanks for that Adamski.

Yea, when I got that base in-hand, it was an instant "Oh..this will work very nicely" moment.

Once I got it painted up and attached Aedus to it, there was no question. I wanted him to be elevated and height difference with the blasted part of that base worked flawlessly. I'm happy you like the finished product

I'm happy the white touches are still impressive. Hopefully I can continue to keep the whites smooth. It's labor intensive, but worth it for the look I'm trying to achieve. I'm going to be mixing in a fair amount of white and gold into the command squad, specifically in the details. That way they all tie together with Aedus nicely both in that way, as well as the bases. Hopefully I can pull it off.

Look forward to more updates soon. Take it easy for now.

Loving the extra details on that arm, though I seem to love pretty much all of your work in this thread so far. However one little criticism I may have is the silver cables from the Narthecium, there is a lot of silver on that part of the model to my eyes and I'm not sure it works for the cabling. That is my own personal opinion though, I still think the arm looks bloody marvellous regardless.

Yea it is a lot of silver, though it is two different shades of silver. I don't know what color I'm painting the vials on his belt as yet, so I may come back and add some color to one of those cables depending on what I do with the belt vials colors. Leaning toward blue in one, and green in another. Will see what I see once I reach that point in the painting process.

Thank you for the continued support also. I appreciate it greatly as always.

Looking forward to getting this mini finished so I can get started on the next member of the Command Squad: The Company Champion.

I've already started sourcing bits from my bits box to get this guy underway. I'll be using another belted torso for the Champ much like I'm using for the Sanguinary Novitiate as, unless the model is wearing artificer armor, I like having the jump pack be visually strapped to the model. Makes sense to me, anyway.

Wow that Novitiate is coming together really cool so far.

What kind of bitz are you thinking of for the Company Champion? Apart from the belted torso.

Glad you like the progress so far Adamski, I'm excited to get this mini finished and start work on the Company Champion.

Here's the parts I'm planning on using:

Parts list:

Combat Shield
Old School metal Blood Angels Power Sword
Shoulder pad from the DC box set w/ jeweled wing bit attached (Right Shoulder)
Shoulder pad from the new Blood Angels Upgrade Sprue (left shoulder)
Jump pack belted torso from an old assault marine box
Legs from the DC box set (running)
Jump Pack from the DC box set (Decorative with purity seals and blood drops on top)
Head from the DC box set.
Purity Seal from the DC box set.

Going to have him positioned so that he's got the shield in front of him as he's charging forward, looking over it with the sword held down low at his side.

More to come soon. Will update once i finish of the Novitiate and get him attached to his base.

Take it easy for now.

I'm loving the choices there for the Company Champion, especially the spiked helm. Except the sword, I don't know if it fits the aesthetic you've created with Aedus' and Novitiate's stylish weapons. Again just my opinion though.

I'm having a hard time finding a left arm power sword I like, and I have several of these older bits laying around. It's not my first choice, per-se, but it's what I have. Will be trying to see if I can find a suitably cool alternative bit in the near future if I can but for now, that's the one I've got in hand to use.

Fingers crossed I'll find something cool I can use instead that suits the mini a little better. We'll see.

More to come soon. Thanks for the input Adamski and if I can find a better alternative, I'll be sure to update on here.

Take it easy for now.

It's a shame you're across the pond and not local otherwise I would've let you have a sword from my Sanguinary Guard box.

I'm sure whichever sword you end up with you'll make it look awesome.

Thanks for the offer Adamski! I'd take you up on it if I could, believe me. I would try to get my hands on the new devastator kit power sword and axe as well for the next two Honor Guard/Command Squad members. I was thinking I'd run one power weapon (mace) on a model and the other two would get just storm shields with meltabombs to deal with any big armored targets or large things they might find themselves up against. I'm thinking I may swap the mace out for an axe to give them some extra AP:2 swings but haven't made up my mind. I want this squad to swing fast and hard, which is why the Mace appeals to me so much. I've already got a power sword on the Company Champion to give me some good AP:3 swings, so some extra higher strength initiative attacks makes sense considering Aedus will have at least 4 to 5 AP:2 attacks.

I will say that I've placed an order for a Blood Angels Tactical Squad with my FLGS and once I get those sprues in-hand, I may opt to instead use the left hand power sword that comes in that kit, as I'm leaning toward giving my BA tactical squad sergeant a combi-flamer and a lightning claw for armament. The sword is gladius style and I do like it a lot for the company champion's power sword. Hopefully I can paint it up to look suitably cool once i get started on the company Champion. I expect the Company Champ will also take a LOT less time to paint, as there isn't quite the quantity of detail on this one compared to the Novitiate or Aedus of course.

More to come soon. Look forward to updates in the near future once I get a day off from work to keep painting.

Take it easy.

I've just had a look at the Blood Angel Tactical Squad Power Sword as well as the Devastator's power weapons and all 3 look pretty awesome and would look good in Aedus' Command Squad.

I'm going to go with the BA power Sword. It suits what I'm looking for aesthetically and ties in the Blood Angels emblem on the weapon. I want this command squad to be visually distinctive. Lots of gold and white mixed in with the red of their armor to make them pop on the tabletop.

The other three Veterans will all have more 'standard' jump packs without decorations other than a purity seal or two on them. I've already started to try and source parts for Veteran # 1 with a Bolt Pistol & Power Weapon (Mace). I've already got two melta bomb bits, two storm shields and a pair of decorative Blood Angels specific chainswords for Veterans # 2 and # 3. The trick will be making each one unique in their pose so they're distinctive. I'll have some fun modeling them up anyway.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Thank you War Kitten. If I can get this mini wrapped up, I'm going to try and get an inaugural run of Aedus and his command squad (with mostly proxies for the other four members of the command squad) run in a medium sized game this Thursday night. Working on a list for a few minutes now. We'll see how it goes.

I'll try and take a picture or two if I can get a list put together with him.

More to come soon. Further updates incoming later today.

Update!

Finished off the Novitiate! Without further ado, here's the finished mini.

This last one was a little blurry, a better one will be taken tomorrow with natural lighting.

I've just finished off laying the base coat of red down on the Company Champion's component parts. Will be starting work on the head most likely, then moving on to the red bits next.

More to come soon, thanks for looking and take it easy for now.

Carrying forward with the steam from finishing off the Novitiate tonight, I've started on the Company Champion. Here's the first part of the mini finished up:

I intend for this mini to be in a much more aggressive stance, charging forward, shield bared to deflect a blow, blade held low in preparation for a powerful strike.

I've just finished putting the first layer of red down over the basecoat of the combat shield and right arm. Will knock it, and the shoulder pad that will attach to it out next. Then move on to the legs and torso so I can get the lion's share of the mini put together. Then, all that will remain to be done is the jump pack, left shoulder, and arm + sword once I get them in-hand.

More to come later. Take it easy for now folks & thanks for looking.

Can't wait for more of the Champion.

Glad to hear you like it, thank you for the kudos.

I'll be taking my Blood Angels out as an ally to my Guard, so Aedus, his Command Squad (mostly proxy) backed up by a small tactical squad in a rhino (Also proxy, using my Deathwatch tactical marines as Blood Angels).

We'll see how we do this afternoon. Will try and snap some pictures and recount how good (or, poorly) he does!

Quick update: Just finished off the right arm & Combat Shield + Bolt Pistol of my Company Champion. A little more labor intensive than I wanted it to be, but came out well I think.

Here's the pictures:

Lastly, Aedus and his stalwart Sanguinary Novitiate took to the field for the first time this afternoon against the sinister Necron menace. Aedus survived the match and did wind up tying up a unit of wraiths for three turns, inflicting a number of wounds and actually killing one wraith before the game finally ended at turn five.

Here's a picture of him and the Novitiate, along with four proxy models I used as stand-ins for the three other veterans and Company Champion. Here's the best picture I snapped of them after spreading out once they landed in my back field to try and help deal with the wraiths crowding in on my Command Leman Russ and his squadron mate:

As you can see, I had tried to charge in with a squad of Vostroyan Veterans in an effort to slow them down, they held them long enough for Aedus and his command squad to jump the tanks and charge in. My opponent could not seem to fail an invulnerable save and the few times he actually did, he would inevitably roll a 5 or 6 on their Reanimation Protocols.

Was a great game, despite my loss. The Maelstrom cards were just not helping me in the late game. I managed to get just six objective points total over five turns, and my opponent ran away with it with nine by the time the game ended (Including First Blood, and Slay the Warlord).

All told, was a good first outing with Aedus. Though I wasn't victorious, he did live through the game. I count that as a minor victory anyway.

More to come soon. I'm starting the right shoulderpad now and will be moving on to the legs and torso after that's finished.

Take it easy for now.

Hey Red_Thirst !

I like the neatness of your work - I have noted only one thing and that may be due to the camera - but it seems some depth is missing in some of your areas - such as the ropes around the jump pack.

Lovely conversions

Keep at it and continue posting updates!

Thank you kindly Teban. I appreciate the comments and am glad you like the conversions and painting. I keep meaning to get better pictures but always forget to while the sun is up (Night shift guy here). I'll try and get some good natural light pictures that show the shading better with my wife's camera (Much nicer than the one I've been using). Look for those in the near future.

As for progress, I'm working on the Company Champion now. I've continued on to work on the right arm's shoulder pad and finished it up last night. Here's where it stands:

I've started work on the torso, then will move on to the legs once I finish it up. After that I'll go ahead and get the base done, and assemble the legs, torso, head, and right arm. Lastly I'll get the Jump Pack taken care of and then paint up the power sword and left arm to finish up the mini.

Still waiting on my Blood Angels Tactical Squad box to arrive to get the left arm and power sword, hopefully it'll get here soon. I've got other bits for the remaining three veteran marines to start on however, so that'll keep me moving forward on the squad.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now folks.

Thank you or that War Kitten, and yea. I agree, It's awesome having so much character on the bits and pieces now. It really makes the assembly and painting of cool and interesting models a whole lot of fun.

I will say that the three remaining veterans will be less blinged out than my Novitiate and Company Champion, though I will still give them some good attention for sure.

I'm kinda thinking of revising my Company Command Squads Veteran loadout somewhat after playtesting the squad versus Necrons.

I'm leaning toward the following build:

-Company Champion with Power Sword & Combat Shield (Including a bolt pistol)
-Sanguinary Novitiate with Chainsword & Narthecium
-Veteran Marine with Power Fist, Bolt Pistol & Storm Shield
-Veteran Marine with Chainsword, Bolt Pistol & Storm Shield
-Veteran Marine with Chainsword, Bolt Pistol & Storm Shield
Squad wide wargear: Jump Packs, Power Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades

Total points for this squad: 180

I'm tempted to not run the storm shield on the Power Fist marine, but I like the thought and mental image of having a shield wall with Aedus as his personal guard and making them as survivable as possible. The difference in points for the squad is 170 total if I opt to run the Power Fist Veteran with no Shield. Not sure how I want to approach it as yet. I want some high strength in the squad with some extra low AP beyond Aedus's Valor's Edge sword. Thoughts to ponder I suppose.

More updates to come. Take it easy for now guys.

Seems like a decent loadout. I'm not sure how much killing power you're looking for though. A fist and a sword won't provide much in terms of killing power

Hey War Kitten, thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to balance killing power with staying power and keep the points reasonable as well, and by that I mean at or around the 175 point level. The Captain & his 4 attacks a turn (5 on the charge) will provide good additional killing power on top of the squad's power sword toting Company Champion and power fist + storm shield Veteran.

I had initially run a power weapon (Mace) And bolt pistol but the extra attack at ST:6 wasn't worth it when I can get a couple of attacks at ST:8 and AP:2 and also throw a third storm shield in the squad to boot. Makes the squad 20 points more expensive at 180 points total, but that's only 5 points more than the initial 175 points I budgeted for the unit to begin with (base cost for the squad is 125 points, including the jump packs in that cost).

I'm going to roll with this build for now & see how t does for the time being. Also debating fielding a power armored librarian with a Jump Pack as well to roll with the squad & provide psychic buffs. We'll see.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now folks.

Update!

Work is progressing well on the Company Champion. I've finished off the torso, and attached the right arm, right shoulder pad, and head to the miniature. Here's where he sits:

Currently working on the legs now, am at about 50% complete on them. Pretty much down to just overall detail work, and then I'll attach the torso to the legs and probably go ahead to the base to get it ready for the jump pack, and eventually the left arm and sword once I get my hands on them.

We'll see how quickly that happens. Thanks for looking, and further updates will be forthcoming soon. Till then, take it easy for now folks.

Ok, final update for the night on the Company Champion.

Very happy with how he's come out so far. The legs were a lot more labor intensive to make look good than I expected them to be, but overall the extra effort paid off I think.

Left to do:
Get my hands on a left arm, and power sword, then paint said items.
Paint the left shoulder pad.
Finish painting the jump pack.
Attach all above items to mini once painting is completed.
Final cleanup/touch up.

Then it'll be on to the first of three veterans. I'll likely be doing the Powerfist & Storm Shield veteran first.

Will be sourcing parts for this assembly now before bed. More to come soon. Thanks so much for looking, and take it easy for now everyone.

Thank you for that War Kitten. I'm currently working on the left shoulder pad (getting it knocked out first, small bit, not a lot to paint)

After that, I'll be moving on to paint the Company Champs Jump Pack.

I've also been keeping busy prepping the bits for the first of three Veteran marines for the Honor Guard/Command Squad and getting them ready to begin painting while I wait on my Blood Angels Tactical Squad box to arrive (The source of the power sword I'll be using).

Here's the parts that I'll be using:

Using the Sanguiniary Guard power fist (Love the detail on this bit!) along with a storm shield, basic marine helmet, and assault marine legs and torso bits. The right shoulder will have first company markings (white skull on a red field) since Honor Guard members are selected from the First Company according to the fluff. The left shoulder comes from the Blood Angels Upgrades sprue. Gotten a lot of mileage out of these bits I'll note! The Veterans are going to be a little more subdued as far as their 'bling'. I wanted the Company Champ, and Sanguinary Novitiate to both stand out from the squad nicely but not overshadow Aedus either. Looking forward to more progress. I'm excited to get this squad finished up in the near future and get started on the Tactical Squad that will follow it.

Take it easy for now.

Quick progress update for the evening:

Left shoulder of the Company Champion:

I went with a different pad than the initial one I selected since the one with the lip over the top of the pad would have likely interfered with the fit between the mini and the jump pack. This particular shoulderpad gives the up-armored feel of the first one without said issues. Very happy with it also.

Jump pack is about to be in-process. More to come soon!

Take it easy for now.

Ok! Last update for the night. I got a little side tracked for about an hour and a half on a terrain project I'm working on. Finally got the assembly finished on it, and now I am finally getting pictures. I went ahead and attached the now finished jump pack. All I lack now are the left arm and power sword bits to get in hand and paint. The left shoulder pad is finished of course (See picture above).

I'll begin work next on my first Veteran marine of the squad next while I wait on the sword to get here. This will likely be the 'best' looking of the three veterans, though I don't plan on slacking on the other two by any stretch. I've got the pose worked out on the base, and with how this is going to look, at least dry-fit together, it's going to be an awesome miniature once finished.

That said, here's the pictures of the *nearly* completed Company Champion:

The Company Champion is looking very cool, can't wait to see with his new arm/sword.

Also loving that you're getting so much use from the Blood Angel Upgrade Sprue, I hope to get as much use out of my Ultramarines one.

Hey Adamski, it really is an excellent little bit of kit I must admit (Yay lymrics!). And yea that powerfist is probably my favorite one ever. The detailing is amazing on it.

The Ultramarine Upgrades Pack also looks like it's chock full of awesome too. My only regret/lament on the Blood Angels Upgrades Pack is they didn't put any unique/special looking melee weapons on it. The Ultramarines and Dark Angels sprues both had neat looking weapons, and an axe or sword would have been cool to have. Still, with all the cool weapon bits in the Sanguinary Guard, Death Company, and Blood Angels Tactical Squad box, I can understand why they didn't put another weapon on there. C'est la vie.

Going to work on my Veteran some tonight. Try and get progress on the mini this weekend since my Tactical Squad box still hasn't arrived at my FLGS as yet. Should be here by Monday or Tuesday and I'll pick it up on Wednesday I hope. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Look for updates on the first Veteran's progress over the weekend here. Take it easy for now folks

If it's any consolation War Kitten, I view myself as only a middling skill painter myself I confess. I have a modicum of brush control from years and years of painting experience but I don't know how to wet blend, use OSL effectively (Though I've pulled it off once or twice by pure luck!) nor do I do anything overly complex as far as mixing paint colors or what-have-you. I'd still love to see some of your minis at some point if you'd care to share them but I totally understand if that's not something you'd care to share at this point and respect that completely.

All that being said, here's my progress for the night so far. I went ahead and got the helmet and base both finished. I worked on these two interchangeably as while I waited on inks and washes to dry on the head, I could work on the base, and vice-versa.

(Unpainted white spot is where the foot will connect to the base)

The next step will be going ahead and getting the right arm's Powerfist and shoulder pad knocked out in one fell swoop. After that, it'll be on to getting the body and legs finished up so I can then move on to the left arm and storm shield. I'll do sub-assembly at that point, including gluing the mini to the base, and then will knock out the jump pack last and get it glued on to finish the model off.

Somewhere in there I'll get my hands on the Company Champion's left arm and sword and get them painted too of course.... I hope, anyway.

More to come soon. Thanks for reading and take it easy.

Last update for the night. Went ahead and got started on the right arm. I applied the first company icon decal (White skull on a red field) to the shoulderpad and proceeded to paint over it (meticulously!) with white, and then red around the edges to give it a 'painted on' look.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with it, though I may yet do a little more work with white to smooth it out a bit more. We'll see later as I'm setting it down for the night. Did I achieve the painted on look? Feedback on this would be greatly appreciated, as I intend to do this with the other two veterans in this squad as well. I'm trying to see if I can make it look like it's not a decal if I can. Hopefully I pulled it off.

Greetings all. Quick update, no pictures yet but some will be added after while, so check back in later on.

Work has progressed nicely on the power fist. I'm nearing completion on it. Just have the white to paint, and then gem work to finish off and it'll be finished. Currently letting some washes dry on it. Once I finish that up, I'll begin work on the actual body and legs of the Marine. Lastly, I'll start work on the left arm and storm shield and left shoulder pad. I'll snap some WIP pictures to add in as well once I finish off the fist and get photos of it.

Thanks for the encouragement there Teban . I'm looking forward to seeing your next batch finished up! I hope once I get this squad finished I'll be able to start cranking my marines out at the same pace you're getting yours painted. Fingers crossed anyway!

Here's the powerfist finished up. Going to work on the torso and legs now so I can get that wrapped up and then attach the torso, power fist, and head all together and then glue that sub-assembly to the base, then continue to work on the left arm, shoulder pad, and jump pack.

Little too much light on that photo, but meh, slightly different angle.

More updates to come. Thanks for looking and take it easy for now folks.

Final update for the weekend here. Got the torso and legs finished up and finished the sub-assembly of completed parts. Here's where the Veteran sits at present:

And a few other angles of the Veteran with the shield dry-fit into place with blu-tack.

Final position of the shield arm is to be determined. I'm thinking of having it held down at his sides since I managed to get a nice dynamic, forward leaning running pose. I'm thinking of having this model be 'vaulting' toward the front in preparation of activating his jump pack to fly skyward. I'll play with the posing once I get the left arm painted up and ready to glue into place before I actually apply glue.

Hope folks like the forward progress. I've got a couple of days of work ahead of me, but will update further progress once I make it later this week. Till then, take it easy for now.

Greetings all, and thank you kindly for the encouragement and kind words KINGPIN54! I woke up a little early this afternoon and had some time to paint, so I went ahead and picked up where I stopped last night, working on the shield arm.

It's been a productive afternoon! I managed to finish the shield arm off, as well as the left shoulder pad as well. I went ahead and attached them to the Veteran. Here's how he looks:

Last image is a little blurry, but is more of a copy of previous images from that side.

Overall I'm very pleased. Love the shoulder pad, and the shield. I've got two more veterans to complete, as well as the Company Champion once I finally get his power sword and left arm in my hands.

I'm going to interject a Death Company marine model into the mix here soon as well for the October unoffical painting competition. Will post WIP of that model here as well.

I've spotted a few minor touch ups I'll need to do to this mini after looking at these pictures. Once that's done I'll begin work on the Jump Pack to finish this model off in short order I hope. Though I'll not be doing any further work on it today, as I'm about to prep to head in for a 12 hour night shift.

For now, y'all take care, and thanks for looking. Take it easy.

Thanks for that War Kitten! Yea I love how this mini came out. Probably my second favorite so far after Aedus. The pose alone is awesome. I can't wait to see the effect with a Jump Pack attached to him. Will be working on the Jump Pack in short order once I have a day off of work.

His jump pack is far less decorated than the Novitiate or Company Champion's are, so it shouldn't take quite as long to paint I hope. Knock on wood anyway.

I just did some figuring, and if I've done my math right, I will wind up having to paint in excess of 36 or more jump packs for this army. Twenty for two full 10 man assault squads, and another ten for my Death Company (Maybe more, depending) plus five for the Command Squad, and Aedus's winged jump pack of course. That's not factoring in any other characters, such as the Blood Angels Librarian I have brewing in the back of my mind as an up-coming project. If and when I start that project, that will be another jump pack to boot. I don't want this to seem as though I'm complaining, as I'm not, but it sure does make painting take longer when you have to paint a backpack that is close to the same surface area as the model it's attached to.

All that aside, I'm enjoying painting this army, and look forward to more progress in the near future for sure. For now, I'm off to go finish getting ready for work. Take it easy and I'll catch y'all later.

Nice stuff, dude. You're really going for it!

How did you do the base with the tiled floor and groove? Is it just green stuff sculpted on, or or a resin base?

Hey Zambro, thank you for the encouragement! I've got a friendly Escalation League starting up on the first of November, so I'm desperately trying to get a portion of my army painted up and prepped for the first phase of that. I've got a ton of work to do is month to get ready for it, but I should be able to make it if I can stay steady at it.

To answer your question: They are solid resin bases. I purchased them all as part of a set off of Ebay. If you search 'Warhammer 40k 32mm bases' you should find them in the list of search results. Their quality is very good also, I'll note.

I hope that helps. Take it easy for now everyone.

Thank you for that, Adamski.

It's my goal with this army for the entire force to be 'display quality'. I want ever model to have character, and to be able to be picked up, and inspected at whatever distance and look awesome. I set the bar with my Captain, and intend to carry it all the way down to the random bolt gun carrying tactical marines, and ever model in between.

Hopefully I can get enough done for my escalation league starting in November. We'll see.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Ah man, part of me knew it was going to be resin. But was holding out hope for it to be home made. Basing is one of those areas that I always felt lacking in. Now I'm trying to push myself with it but I've never been good at modelling so I look for hints and tips where ever possible.

I think you're crazy trying to do that level of quality across an entire army Dont get me wrong, I admire your goal and I like having minis painted well. But, dude, that is a serious challenge. Especially with deadlines. How many points do you need by November? How many are finished?

Captain, my Captain, Or: Building Captain Sendini; a Blood Angels 5th Battle Company Painting Blog. @ 2015/10/06 11:25:43

Post by: Red__Thirst

500 points ready realistically by the end of November. The list I've worked out is 16 models and one Vehicle, a Rhino Transport.

As far as what's finished, Two of 16... But I have another two very close to being finished, and the Rhino is also already finished/tabletop ready (Old Rhino I held on to when I sold my Angels off back in College).

Also: I like a challenge.

Regarding the basing, I have based three armies myself, the hard way, one of which was an Imperial Guard army, and have found that Resin Bases with pre-molded texture you can add to make for a much more enjoyable modeling experience. I'll only ever do molded bases for my Blood Angels, as I think they look better and are easier to work with and prepare for paint. To each their own of course, and I totally understand wanting tips.

What I can offer for basing is this: get some 'Formula 560' canopy glue if you can. It's excellent for basing, and holds wonderfully, while also drying fairly quickly too. Beyond that, get a little bit of several sizes of basing material and mix them up. That'll give you some variation from fine sand texture to larger chunks of stone or what-have you. Also, get some extra bits and put them in the mix too, gluing them down before you add the flock. Things like discarded ammo pouches, a dropped grenade, a magazine or discarded pistol or other bit. Little things like that go a long way to make a base look interesting.

I hope those suggestions help, and thank you once again for the encouragement.

Take it easy for now.

Mini update, no pictures but I'll add some tomorrow.

Got the first veteran's Jump Pack primed red in preparation for the first coat of Mephiston Red. Once that coat is finished drying, I'll be able to get the metallic and ink work finished, them paint the few details and I'll be ready to glue it on and finish off the mini.

From there, I'll detour over to paint up a Death Company Marine as break from painting so much red lately. After that, I'll either begin the next Veteran, OR... I'll begin work on a new optional HQ choice I've had in the back of my mind for a bit, and that might be fun to paint up with all the bits I've got at my disposal now.

More to come soon, updates will be posted tomorrow once I make some headway.

Take it easy for now folks.

Hey Adamski, thank you!

Work has commenced on the Veteran's Jump Pack. Once it's finished up, I'll attach it and get some pictures taken. This one won't be quite as time consuming to paint as the others have been thanks to much less decoration on the pack. I'm looking forward to having a second member of this squad properly finished up, unlike the Champ, who's still armless and waiting for his power sword patiently.

Look for pictures in the next hour or so.

Super happy with this mini! As I said, probably my second favorite after Aedus, though I do love how the Novitiate has come out too, as well as the Company Champ (Though I don't have a full opinion on that one yet as he's still WIP).

Thanks for looking folks. I'm about to go lay the base coat down on a Death Company Marine next. Will update with a parts list shortly.

Hey War Kitten, don't feel bad about taking the time you need to be happy with a mini. Be it three days, three weeks, or three months, so long as you're making forward progress.

I've begun work on the first member of my Death Company. Here's the component parts (Sans base, forgot to snap a picture of it)

This will be more, and at the same time less tricky to paint than the Red. I struggle to highlight black effectively, so will be trying a few new techniques to try and see if I can make the black power armor look less flat while still hitting all the details effectively.

I've already gotten the helmet painted last night, just didn't get any pictures taken of it as I was prepping for bed. Will update later with more progress on the helmet and legs next. Stay tuned.

Take it easy for now.

Thank you both, I appreciate the kind comments as always.

Mini-update: I've almost finished the left arm & Chainsword off. Just have to paint the scroll/decorative bit on the blade guard, then paint the gems on the bottom of the handle and I'll be ready to glue it into place. Once that's finished I'll get the right arm painted & prepped up, then shoulder pads and jump pack to finish off the mini. It's been tedious painting black, and I'm dreading painting another 8 to 9 of these marines truth be told, but I do love the final product, so I'll endure.

In other news, I have finished off the base and have attached the DC marine to it. Pictures will be forthcoming tomorrow once I'm home from work.

That's all for now. Take it easy everyone.

Thanks War Kitten. I just finished up the Death Company Marine. Take a look:

Very happy wit this mini. The pose and the painting came together beautifully thank goodness. I went with silvers versus gold and darker gem shades than the rest of the army to give them a darker cast, also using a grey wash over the whites instead of the blue, giving the white bits a little bit darker shading. I wanted to make the Death Company set apart from the rest of the army, which will be painted with more golds, and whites. The darker color choices hopefully provide a nice contrast, and a good representation of the ever present darkness in the Blood Angel's psyche.

More to come soon. I've sourced the parts for Veteran # 2 and will begin work on him later today or tomorrow. Take it easy for now ladies and gents.

Following that I'll get the arms and shoulder pads painted an then finish up with the Jump Pack. Then it'll be just one more model to finish off the squad (Save for the Champion's sword arm) and I can move on to the next unit for the army.

In other news, I'll be picking up my Blood Angels tactical squad box this afternoon and finally getting my hands on the power sword to finish up the Company Champion this weekend. Look forward to that update soon as well.

I wanted to try something new with the power sword. I'm actually pretty happy with it, but it is kinda dark, I do agree. I'll work on making the next one a little brighter, but will let this one ride for the time being. Looking at how I plan to field the list, there may not be many more power weapons like this, though. I expect I may have a power axe or possibly a lightning claw or two and that's pretty much it from what I can see. Maybe down the road, I'll have something extra to work with, but beyond the Company Champ, and Aedus, those may be the only true power swords in the army. Of course, that's not 100% at this point in the game. Who knows what changes I'll make as the army grows.

As for the thread here, forward progress has been made. I finished off the second veteran's base, and his legs. They took a little more work to get looking right as they are a re-purposed set of of assault marine legs. The paint was not being friendly tonight, which may be slightly evident in some of these photos, but I powered through and am pleased with the result. Next up will be the torso, then arms and shoulder pads, and lastly (as usual) the jump pack. Sub assembly will occur as I finish bits off and further updates will show progress.

here's where we sit:

Good progress tonight. I estimate the mini is at a solid 40% complete, factoring in the already finished helmet (Not show, as yet, future updates will have it attached once I finish off the torso).

Thanks for looking, and take it easy for now.

Thanks for that War Kitten

I've got a long stretch of days off coming up starting tomorrow, so I'll be knocking out this Veteran as quickly as I can (Within reason) and starting the fifth and final member of the Command Squad up as soon as I finish off this mini. In theory, I may be able to finish off both by this weekend if I can really buckle down and paint a lot over the next three to five days.

After the command squad is completed, I will move on to the second HQ choice for my army: A jump pack equipped Librarian. The bits and parts I need for this project are currently en-route to me, and hopefully will be here by the middle of next week. Once I have them all in-hand I will take a photo of the un-assembled bits together before work begins. Look forward to that by next weekend hopefully.

After the Librarian is painted, I will move on to the first Tactical Squad for the army, likely batch painting them two to three minis at a time to help speed up the process.

Further updates incoming soon. Take it easy for now everyone.

I'm currently working on the right arm, which is holding a chainsword, and right shoulder pad. After that's finished, the left arm and storm shield will be painted up, and then the jump pack will be finished, completing the mini.

in other news, I got a few bits in the mail today! Namely, the upcoming Librarian's force staff, as well as the third storm shield I need for the third and final Command Squad veteran.

Further progress will be posted up soon. Sorry these pictures aren't the best, I was kind of in a hurry to snap them. Next update with pictures will have better photos.

Take it easy for now.

I did! In fact, I got the last few bits in the mail earlier today and just snapped a bits picture a little earlier.

BEHOLD!

Not pictured is the Jump Pack I'll be using, which I haven't decided on yet. I may use a generic one with some extra decoration, or one of the Blood Angels specific ones such as the ones used on the Company Champion and Sanguinary Novitiate. Will make that choice later once painting commences.

Still have to finish up the second Veteran and try to knock the third one out, though I may go ahead and start work on the Librarian first.

The only point I'm working on is how I want to paint the torso. Leaning toward painting the chest and abdominal area dark red, or possibly gold. I'll be trying a few things, but I'm not sure what I want to do with it as yet.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Ooh that librarian will look great when done. Are you going to paint him blue or go with mostly red? I've seen it done both ways

Post by: Red__Thirst

I'm currently leaning toward blue, though I am sorely tempted to do him red as he obviously has 'artificer' armor on. Sadly I can't actually give him artificer armor. :(

I want his armor to be kind of Mephiston style, which is what I was going with. Blood Angels are Codex Compliant (mostly.. their squad/company markings are not, nor are their squad types since they use color to denote tactical, devastator, assault, and veteran) so the armor *should* be painted blue, but I'm leaning toward this guy being a 'senior' Librarian, perhaps the second Librarian under Mephiston himself, which is why his armor is more baroque than the standard power armor worn by the lower ranked Librarians. I see him as being given the duty or task of unraveling the mystery of Gallian's Staff.

As I said, I'm leaning heavily toward going with Blue armor, as I want this guy to obviously be a librarian. How I paint the torso armor is giving me some pause, but I think I may have an idea on how to paint it up and make it look good using gold on his chest and abdomen, with white on the small blood angels icon in the center of his chest. It will pair nicely with the golds I plan to use on the right shoulder pad rim, and other decorations on his legs and bolt pistol, etc.

I'll be wanting this character to look 'at home' in this command squad, and along side Captain Aedus. He'll certainly stand out being blue in a sea of red, but I like that differentiation personally.

Still have to finish off this Veteran, updated pictures will be coming soon. I'm about to get started on painting the shoulder pad and jump pack which will finish off the model once completed and attached.

Take it easy for now.

And nearing the finish line with this Veteran!

here's the completed mini, sans jump pack, which I'm about to undertake and try to paint up completely tonight to finish off the mini. Take a look:

Apologies for the picture quality being a little blurry, was in a hurry when I took these pictures. Finished model update photos will be less hurried.

The conundrum I face now is, do I go ahead and knock out the third veteran and complete the Honor Guard, or do I go ahead and begin work on the Librarian? I'm sorely tempted to begin the Libby, but I think I need to stick to my guns, buckle down, and finish off the Command Squad first, before moving on to the Librarian.

We'll see. More updates to come once I finish up this jump pack and get it attached.

Take it easy.

Hey Adamski. The staff is actually a converted Warding Staff from the Grey Knight Terminators box I bits ordered. I clipped the skull that is normally in that space out, and took a back banner decorative bit from the Blood Angels Tactical Squad box, trimmed the spikes around the exterior of the ring down, and fit it inside of the empty circle where the skull once was. Was a bit pain-staking, and I'm not 100% sure it doesn't still need some very fine file work to make it look correct, but I may just lay some paint on it and let it ride. We'll see.

The torso is two parts from different places. The back is, obviously, a power armored Grey Knight torso bit with the Psychic Hood attached. The front of the torso is from the Blood Angels Upgrades Pack that I am so very in love with. Aedus's torso front is also from this same pack too. Really getting a lot of mileage out of that particular bits pack. All of my Honor Guard have shoulder pads from it, as well as Aedus and this up-coming Librarian as well. I like the sculpted torso done in the same style as Mephiston and Astorath.

Hopefully that answered your questions.

Take it easy for now.

Final update for the night!

Veteran number 2 is finally finished! This mini took a lot more effort than I thought it would to complete, but I'm very happy with the final result and pose. Here's the final pictures:

And last but not least, a group shot of all four completed Honor Guard members:

Not the best photography sessions tonight, but hopefully despite some of the less than stellar pictures, the minis still look ok.

I'll have the final Veteran started in short order. I've just spraypainted the black basecoat over the base and will begin by getting it ready for the mini. After that, I'll get the helmet painted up, then torso and legs (already sub-assembled, re-using an old assault marine set of legs and torso), then the chainsword and storm shield arms, shoulder pads, and jump pack to finish it off. I'm going to be trying to add something extra to the shield on this one to help separate it from the other two veterans (all three have the same shield bit, so I'm doing my best ot make it less obvious they're all identical shields with posing and decals).

Thanks so much for looking, and better pictures will come in the near future I hope. Just having an off night with the camera it seems.

Take it easy for now everyone.

Thank you! That is probably one of the most tedious parts about painting the Captain and this command squad is the gems. I'm glad you like them.

I'm trying my best to leave no detail unpainted, within reason anyway, which is why I'm painting them in pieces/stages then assembling after the part/bit is painted. I've noticed a sharp increase in the quality of the models in their final form compared to previous marines I've painted in the more traditional full-assemble-then-paint method.

I appreciate the kudos there Tyronus.

Take it easy.

The latest Veteran/Honour Guard member looks awesome. The look is spot on.

The group shot is excellent though it seems to be missing the head honcho and leader of the gang - Aedus.

That Staff is phenomenal, I love it. It looked like a real part to me not a conversion even though I suspected it might be. You've got skills Red.

Started work on the last member of the command squad this afternoon.. Or more specifically, his base. Here's the finished product. The bare unpainted white spot will be where the foot will glue to the base.

Not as exciting as the mini, but I was rather happy with how this base turned out, especially showcasing the new Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust technical paints. They really do produce a wonderful rust effect. I also have the Verdigris paint (Nihilakh Oxide) and have used it in my basing on my deathwatch minis. I have been very pleased with it as well, and also used a very small amount of this particular paint on the exposed pipe beneath the left foot of my Company Champion's base.

With that all being said, here's the progress for the day. What do folks think?

Once this mini is finished up, I'll take a group shot of all five together, as well as all five with Aedus as well.

More to come later. Take it easy.

Final update for the night. All bits prepped for base coating. No pictures as yet, but I've just got finished sourcing all the parts from my bits box, scraping mold lines, attaching the shield to the shield arm, cleaning flash/sprue attachment points, and gluing a spare purity seal to the storm shield to make it look a little different from the others in the squad.

I'm not sure what I want to do to this shield to make it look unique from the rest of the shields in the squad. I'm tempted to put a black skull, or a black number 5 on the shield since it's the 5th Battle Company's Command Squad, and would tie in nicely to the other Veteran I just finished up that has the black tear drop shape on a red field, which represents the 5th Battle Company. Would tie in nicely I think. I'll check my decal sheets to see what I can find in short order. I've got an idea that I think will work.

First thing is first, I'll be working on the helmet and getting it finished first, then moving on to the torso and legs, then arms and shoulder pads before finishing up with the Jump Pack as usual.

After this squad is finished up, I plan to start work on the Librarian pictured above. We'll see how quickly I can get this figure wrapped up. Wish me luck and more updates will come in short order.

Take it easy everyone and thanks for reading.

Quick update. Managed to finish off the helmet for the final member of the Honor Guard. Here's the progress:

It's currently raining here, which is very good, since we've been in drought conditions for a while now. However. it's making getting base coats laid down quite difficult moving forward. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to get outside and get some spray paint out without the dreaded fuzzing effect that humidity can sometimes cause.

In the mean time, more work will continue. Hopefully I'll be able to make more headway later this afternoon and get some more solid progress on this final Honor Guard member. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Update! Work has begun in earnest on this last Veteran. If all goes as I hope it will, I will have the torso and legs finished by tonight, the head attached, and the left arm and shield finished, along with the left shoulder pad I do hope. I'm going to get *as much* as I can finished up tonight and in theory, finish up the miniature tomorrow night. I'm going to be curtailed somewhat in that process by the fact that I have to go to my quarterly qualification with my side arm at work tomorrow evening, after doing our yearly shotgun qualification, so I'm going to be rather busy till at least 8:45 to 9 and doubt I'll be home much before then. The good news is once I get home I'll be getting cleaned up, and then sitting right down to paint some I do hope.

All that being said, here's where the mini sits as I pause to type this post out.

I've just finished laying down the metallic paint ont he legs, and torso, and am about to begin the process of putting Nuln oil on the metal areas. Once that dries I'll touch up the red, then do the chest eagle wings gold to match the rest of the squad. Then I'll dry fit the arms in place to get the head direction correct and glue the head into place, and move on to painting the left shield arm and shield itself, then the shoulder pad. If I can get all of that done before too late, I'll begin work on the chainsword arm and right shoulder pad to finish up the lion's share of the model. After that, It's paint the jump pack and the Command Squad will be finished.

More to come soon, I'll post another update here later tonight once I get to a stopping point. Take it easy for now everyone.

Any pictures of the finished products? I'd love to see some Guard veterans, as all I run typically is Veteran Squads in my Vostroyan Firstborn Guard army.

Looking forward to seeing them if you'd care to share.

Keep up the good work! I find the trick to getting models painted is to keep the momentum up and don't 'pause' too long between painting sessions. It's easier to keep up than catch up, as the old saying goes.

Excellent War Kitten, I look forward to seeing your veterans if you decide to try and get them up here. The gallery is super easy to use. I typically upload the photos directly from my phone while I'm sitting at my painting desk. Takes all of five minutes or less.

Quick update on the Veteran. The torso and legs are finished. I've just attached the head, and am about to begin work on the arms. I'm going to go ahead and get the decal work finished on the shield, and right shoulder pad first. Then move on to more detail work.

Here's the progress thus far tonight:

Will keep working for another hour or so, try and get as much headway as I can tonight while I've got the steam to do it.

Talk to you guys more shortly. Take it easy for now and look for one last update on progress shortly.

Finally, time for an update. After an eventful 48 hours involving a hospital stay with my Wife, I'm finally back home and have her recuperating in bed earlier today. I caught a nap and am painting some tonight now that I've got some down time. Managed to finish off the left arm and left shoulder pad tonight. All that remains are the right arm, and right shoulder pad, and the Jump Pack. Once those bits are finished up, I'll have this squad finished and can move on to the next project: My Librarian.

All that said, here's the updated progress I've accomplished tonight:

Very happy with this figure as well, despite being somewhat 'basic' by comparison to the powerfist Veteran, Novitiate, and Company Champ, he and the other chainsword wielding Veteran both have character and I am enjoying their poses being defensive, blocking the incoming fire for their Captain (Or, Librarian) as they vault forward into the fray.

More to come soon. I'm going to try and get this right shoulder pad and arm started in earnest. The decal is already on the pad, just have to add paint to make it look painted on like I've done on the other two squad Veterans.

Thanks for looking, and take it easy for now.

Thank you for that, Adamski. The wife is fighting a combination of what the doctor's best guess is a kidney stone coupled with a nasty cold or the Flu. She's slowly on the mend, just have to get her through this weekend and see if she needs to go to a clinic for a follow up on Monday if she isn't showing improvement.

More to come soon, I'm off my primary job this weekend but working at my part time job Friday through Sunday. Hopefully will find a little time to paint. Fingers crossed, I'll have this Veteran finished up in short order and can muddle forward. After I finish up this squad, I'll begin work on the Librarian, as well as a small five man Scout Squad I'll be starting once it arrives.

Swanky! What are you running them with, armament wise?

I run my Chimera veterans in the following configuration:
1x Laspistol/Close Combat Weapon sergeant
6x Lasguns
1x Grenade Launcher or Flamer (depending on my mood really)
2x Plasma Guns or Grenade Launcher.
Squad Wide Krak Grenades as well as Grenadiers. (Fits the Vostroyans quite well)

If I'm dropping the squad out of a Valkyrie, I generally field them with the following:
1x Veteran w/ Plasma Pistol & Close Combat Weapon
6x lasguns
2x Flamers (or 1x Flamer, 1x Heavy Flamer)
1x Plasma Gun

These squads usually do very well for me. Just curious how you run yours.

More work on this last veteran will commence tonight once I'm home from my part time job. Take it easy for now.

I prefer to run mine either with melta guns or plasma guns (proxy usually, as plasma and meltas are hard to come by, outside of buying the metal ones). If I'm feeling particulary daring I go with flamers, as it works wonders to discourage my BA friend from charging me. 3D3 automatic hits can do some work

Captain, my Captain, Or: Building Captain Sendini; a Blood Angels 5th Battle Company Painting Blog. @ 2015/10/30 22:33:03

Post by: Red__Thirst

Yea, that's why I run flamers when I do versus grenade launchers on the Chimera mounted squads. I also don't run triple plasma/melta as only two models can shoot out of the back hatch and I don't want to pay for an expensive gun that may not fire every turn because of the restrictions on the transport they are in. Also helps keep the squad anywhere from 5 to 10 points cheaper. Not a huge discount on the overall point cost, but if you do that for 3 to 4 squads, that adds up to 15 to 30 points I can put other places in the army.

That's how I look at it anyway.

Take it easy for now.

I think so, Yes. I hope to have the Librarian finished up soon, and begin work on a small five man scout squad after that.

I can't lay down any base coats on the Librarian as yet since it's *still* raining outside and I don't want to risk the paint fuzzing on me. The only issue I'm having at present is what helmet to use for my Librarian. I don't know if I want to use the more knight-esque helm depicted previously, or if I want to go with a more traditional space marine helmet. I'll look around in my bits box and see what I can come up with I suppose.

Look for updates in short order. I'll be starting with the Helmet, and then moving on to legs and torso after that.

Boo rain though as a Brit I'm used to having my spraying opportunities limited in this country of miserable weather. We are infamous for even our summers being wet and miserable.

As for the helmet I do like the more knight-esque personally, though I like most Space Marine helmets other than beakies. Have you tried to see what maybe a deathmask would look like with your Librarian?

Post by: Red__Thirst

Yea I have, sadly the high crests on top of the helmets interfere with the psychic hood, so major surgery would be required to make a death mask work with the hooded torso I'll be using. Also, I don't want to give a model a death mask unless they have the wargear on them to avoid confusion. Aedus will be wearing the Crown Angelic if they're ever fielded together as my two HQ choices, so I think I'm going to go with a 'standard' marine helmet on this character.

He'll be the traditional blue shade, with a blood red shoulder pad on his left shoulder. I'll also be incorporating a lot of gold onto him, specifically on his shoulder pad rims and probably on the abdominal/torso and chest of his power armor, plus any decorative bits and bobs. I may try and do some limited OSL on the psychic hood, but haven't made up my mind yet on that end. My first forray into OSL went pretty well, but I don't know if I want to dabble again and make a mistake. We'll see what happens once I start getting paint on the model I suppose.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

I'll paint up the 'traditional' helmet first, as I'm already going to have him in faux-artificer armor any way (He can't wear true artificer armor, not an option sadly) but his armor will still be suitably blinged out as befits his status. That said, the more I look at the knight helmet the more I don't think it suits the character. I'll play around with dry fits over the course of this week and post up pictures for folks to see which option looks better.

Look for further updates soon. Take it easy for now folks.

Go with your gut dude, it always seems to work for Gibbs. If you don't think the knight helmet fits your view of the character then definitely go with a more traditional one. It is your model after all and you don't want to get a few months down the line and start thinking his head looks wrong and you wished you'd gone a different way.

Agreed, I'm hoping this Librarian looks as good as my previous example, which was my Terminator Librarian for my small Deathwatch force (Pictures in my galley, if you're interested in seeing them).

This Librarian will be a bit more dynamic in his posing, much like the Death Company marine I painted up. I want him to be charging forward, possibly with his bolt pistol held up and forward as though putting rounds onto a target, his Force Staff held at the ready to commence beating a target into submission.

The only other thing I'm currently working on is if I do some OSL on the interior of the Psychic Hood and his eyes, what color do I use. I'm leaning toward purple, but may opt to try a Red energy effect. Not sure yet. Will play with it as I begin the painting process.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Aye, that's the one.

I don't know if I'll be able to get the same effect on my Blood Angels Librarian but I'm going to try for the similar OSL effects on the interior of the psychic hood, the tops of the shoulder pads, and jump pack intakes, as well as the back of the helmet area too.

The only thing I've got to sort out is what colors to use for the glow effect. Purple is the current front runner, with green or red being the odds on second after that. We'll see what I can come up with once I get some painting under way. I've got to get the pieces painted before I even worry with OSL effects.

One step at a time. Take it easy for now.

I think purple would look good as an OSL color the Librarian's psychic powers, adds that "otherworldly" vibe to it. Also, have you considered moving this to the P and M blog section? Just curious

I have, actually, but haven't asked as yet. Would probably be a smart move to get it shuffled over there for purpose. I'll see about contacting a Mod later this week and see about getting the shuffle to happen.

Going to prep for work now, hopefully will get a little painting done tomorrow and Thursday if I'm lucky. More to come soon.

Got the helmet finished up. I like to start here on my minis, it's a small part of the mini but I like to make sure the eyes are done correctly, and really take my time to get the detail where I want it.

I'm very happy with the blue I've achieved as well. I'm hoping to carry this over to the rest of the mini in short order.

Next up, the base, and legs. More updates to come. Take it easy for now.

It's actually a little more simple than I expected it would be.

It's a black base-coat, then two to three thinned layers of Macragge Blue. After that dried, I went in and did edge highlights with The Fang (Old Shadow Grey), and then used a combination of Drakenhof Nightshade in the recesses then a smaller line of Nuln Oil in the recesses once that dried.

After that I worked on the metallic paints and did the eye gems to complete the bit. I'm currently working on the legs now. I've gotten them about 65% finished, and I have also finished up the base at this point. Hopefully I'll be able to get the sub assembly started tonight once I finish up the legs. After that I'll knock out the torso.

Smooth progress, though I'm working this weekend so I won't have a ton of time to paint sadly. We'll see where I can get by the end of the week.

Take it easy.

Update on progress. I'm about to begin work on the torso armor, legs are finished and attached to the base. I'll be dry-fitting the arms and what-not to the torso once it's finished to get the pose finalized then sub-assemble the torso and helmet to the legs and base. After that, I'll be down to arms, shoulder pads, and then jump pack. Progress is going faster than I expected it would, though I'm not as far along as I want. I want to have this mini finished up by next week if I can so I can begin work on another Death Company marine or two, or possibly begin work on the Tactical squad.

Here's the legs and base. Very happy with this base also I'll add.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Final update for the night. Got the torso finished, and may I say this torso was an test of my patience. I'm still not 100% happy with it even now, but I've messed with it so much, any more and I feel like it'll start to look worse. Specifically, the right chest portion of the torso gave me absolute fits. Between the paint gumming up on me (not enough water mixed in, stupid mistake on my part) to the white paint being too thin later and causing it to run, I wound up having to carefully scrape the paint off the right chest twice and start over painting it. Thankfully I didn't ruin the bit, and for the quality I'm going for it shouldn't be noticeable I don't think, but was still terribly frustrating.

Still, all told, the results are looking promising. Here's the progress for the night.

The tiny Blood Angel logo on his center chest was also a straight up to get looking correct. I've still got a little work left to do on it to make it perfect but I'm setting it down for the night before I go cross eyed.

Thanks for looking, next up will be the arms, and shoulder pads, then I'll finish it out with the jump pack last.

Take it easy for now.

Thank you both for the kudos!

I'm working all weekend, 3 twelve hour shifts in a row, so painting has ground to a halt for the next few days. I'll get the next pieces ready for painting in short order, likely starting with the left arm and shoulder pad. I've decided to use the left shoulder pad I had initially envisioned yo use on Aedus, and will be getting the arm painted up in sort order. After that, I'll get the right arm and force staff taken care of, and then finish up with the right shoulder pad and jump pack last. I estimate another week to ten days to get that wrapped up, give or take.

Further updates to come. Take it easy for now folks

It's not so bad, just long hours is all.

I hope to get a little more painting in tomorrow afternoon before I come back into work. I'm going to work on the left arm shoulder pad, since it's already base coated. It's been raining nonstop for the last 3 days, so I'm having to wait to get the last few parts base coated black till after the humidity lays down once the rain finally stops.

The arms are going to be fairly quick to paint I hope, as are the shoulder pads. In theory I'll have the Librarian finished by Friday night I hope.

Small update. Work has begun on the arms, specifically the right arm. I got everything but the jump pack spraypainted last night and got the blue bits started.

After that, I began work on the left arm, and have it mostly finished. All that's really left is to paint the decorative wing and blood drop casing on the bolt pistol and edge highlight the black parts on the inside of the pistol. I've gotten the blue parts of the arm done and highlighted.

Once that's finished I'll get the red shoulder pad finished up and paint the chapter emblem to match Aedus and the honor guard, and at that point it's just finish painting the right arm & force staff + right shoulder pad and jump pack.

More progress will be made tonight. I should be able to get the left arm and shoulder pad done tonight and make some solid progress on the right arm as well I hope. We'll see how far I can get.

Take it easy for now.

Update time. Didn't get as much progress as I wanted tonight, but overall I'm very pleased. I finished up the left arm and bolt pistol as well as completely painted the left shoulder pad and got both bits attached. Without further ado, here's where we sit:

I'll be making sure I use a few more washes to help define the edges of the molded scrollwork along the top lip of the shoulder pad, rest assured. It does kinda blend in with the gold more than I expected it would. Still, I'm ecstatic with how well the mini is shaping up.

Well thank you very much for that! This model has been an interesting departure for me, as I've kinda gotten acclimated to painting red and gold with white over the last few months as I've been slowly painting my Captain, and the Command Squad that will take the field with him normally.

Painting Blue is, in a word, different. Not bad different, I'll note, just very different. It's MUCH easier to highlight blue compared to red, but it's more difficult to shade blue compared to red, so I suppose that's a trade off. I've started work on the right arm and force staff, but am putting it down for the night and will come back to it later. I don't want to try and force myself to keep painting and start to make mistakes as a result of being too tired/sleepy to really paint well. I've accomplished some good progress for the night, and will try to do a little more work tomorrow before I head to work.

This staff should be a fairly quick bit to paint, I hope. We'll see. I've got the arm metallic paint on it and have gone in to do the initial shading/ink work on the recesses. The next step will be clean up, highlighting, and then moving on to the staff itself. Once that's finished up, I'll move on to get the right shoulder pad painted, and then I'll be down to the jump pack to paint and attach to finish the mini off.

It's going faster than I expected, but I'm still a little behind from where I want to be to have the mini finished by this weekend. We'll see how much headway I can make tomorrow before work.

Till then, take it easy for now and thank you once again for the kind words there Kingpin54.

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm very happy with this Librarian and how he turned out. I'm using the steam I've worked up to continue to chip away at some Blood Angels. Next on the chopping block, some Tactical Marines!

Here's the first of a five man tactical squad: The Heavy Flamer toting Tactical Marine.

As you can see, I've gotten the base coats laid down on the Power Armor, as well as the Heavy Flamer and have begun work on the base. I'm actually completely out of black paint (My last pot of Chaos Black, I'm a little bummed about that) and will be going to pick up more tomorrow I hope.

Hopefully I'll be able to make some good headway tomorrow evening and get the base wrapped up, before starting on the head, and then legs and torso. Hopefully I'll have it wrapped up by next week, though I'm admittedly taking my time to really paint each and every individual model to as high a standard as I can. It'll take a long time to finish the army, but in theory I'll have a 'display' quality army from my HQ choices all the way down to my rank-and-file troops.

More to come soon. See y'all at next update. Take it easy.

Sweet!! I look forward to seeing your Ultramarine Captain!

I'll be off work from my part time job in about an hour and a half. Once I'm home, I'll be starting on laundry and then painting between transferring loads from the washer to the dryer and folding said loads once they come out of the dryer. I plan on getting the base finished and probably going ahead to start on the helmet, legs and torso. In theory I may be able to sub-assemble the body and head tonight. We'll see how far I can get.

Ok! Progress, progress.

I managed to get the first Tactical Marine's base, and legs finished, and sub-assembled the legs to the base. For a first tactical marine, I'm fairly pleased with the results. The right knee squad marking I'm particularly happy with, despite the slight chalkiness of the paint that happened as I was laying down the first coat of the dark yellow shade I'm using. Will be starting work on the torso, and then helmet, before I begin to paint the arms, backpack, and finish up with the Heavy Flamer at the end. I'm debating painting one, or possibly all three of the blood drops on the left shin gold, but I rather like them being just decorative bits on the armor, raised off of the surface of the shin/lower leg armor. I don't want to bling out my tactical marines *too* much, but I will be making sure they have gold and white on them, tying them together visually with their Captain, and his Honor Guard.

Without further ado, here are the pictures of tonight's progress:

The torso and helmet should go MUCH faster, as will the backpack and individual arms. I should have this mini finished up before Thanksgiving I do hope. After that, I'll move on to the Tactical Squad Sergeant and then paint up the first three bolter toting marines to finish the half-squad off.

More updates to come. Thanks for looking and take it easy for now.

Thanks Adamski! Painting a full squad with the yellow knee pads and red blood drops on them is going to be tricky, but I'll manage somehow

Tonight, I've made some decent progress. I've gotten the torso and head knocked out this evening, and am about to start work on the arms and shoulder pads before I move on to the weapon, and finally the backpack. Pretty pleased so far with the mini, take a look.

And showing the base a little better.

So far, so good. Liking how this mini is turning out, and am looking forward to seeing the full half-squad painted up.

I'd also like to say that the move to 32mm bases makes me very happy. I LOVE the way these marines are looking on 32mm versus the old base size.

Let me share with you the secret to doing good yellow, at least as far as I'm concerned anyway. Get a pot of Zamesi Desert. It's fabulous. I use it as a base coat for my golds and also with two to three thinned coats, it covers black flawlessly. Here's an example of what Zamesi Desert looks like after a couple of coats:

No shading or washes done on that of course, but it produces a good yellow shade. That's exactly how I painted the kneepad. Just two to three thinned coats of Zamesi Desert over the knee. Done.

And the chest piece is actually one of the standard ones from the Blood Angels tactical squad box. It's a FANTASTIC piece of kit I'll note. I'll be buying at least a couple of more in the future for my Blood Angels. One to make into a tactical squad and one for conversion bits for a devastator squad, etc.

Funnily enough, I used the two chest pieces that came in the Blood Angels Upgrade Sprue on both of my HQ choices, the Captain, and my Librarian.

I appreciate the kind words as always guys. Take it easy for now and I'll try to have a few more updates in the near future. till then, take it easy.

The trick I've learned over the years is to get some good plastic glue (I use Testors brand Liquid Cement for Plastic Models, black bottle, terrific stuff!) for the arms and get them both painted up together (separate from the shoulder pads) and get both arms and bolter prepared to be attached together. Attach the right arm first, and then the left. While the plastic glue is still pliable and the join hasn't completely set yet, I gently place the bolter into position without glue and do any final tweaks/adjustments to the position, then leave it in place to set. Once both shoulder joins with the torso are dry and set, I then go in and finally glue the bolter in place. A very small amount of blue-tack can be used to help hold the bolter/hand in place on the right arm depending on if the bolter is a part of the hand or a separate bit unto itself.

It takes patience, but once you get the hang of it you can get the arms and bolter all assembled fairly quickly and without too much headache.

The Tac marine is coming along quite nicely. Soon enough you'll have a fully painted army. I both love and hate the tactical marine kit, I love the detail on it, but I suck at putting the arms and guns together (even after 3+ years of doing it ).

Hopefully that helps. Take it easy for now War Kitten.

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! The next tac marines I plan on building are (hopefully) going to be from the new Betrayal at Calth set. I'm adding them to my ongoing Ultramarine army (because you can never have enough marines amiright?) 30 Tac marines, 5 termies, 1 contemptor dread, 1 chaplain, and 1 captain for $150? Yes please. Hopefully they're ok to build.

I can't wait to get some Betrayal at Calth minis. I intend to try and split a box with a friend, take 15 marines, and maybe the Contemptor, and let him have the other 15 marines, the terminators, and the characters. Hopefully it'll work out, though honestly I want an entire BaC box for myself to do up some pre-heresy Blood Angels for 30k.

Hopefully the tip helps. I'll be working on the Sergeant for this tactical squad next. Still debating what I want to arm him with.

The current line of thinking is giving him a Lightning Claw on one arm and a combi-flamer, combi-melta, or combi-grav on the other. My alternative build for him is to give him a hand flamer and melta pistol, though I prefer the Lightning Claw/Combi-weapon to be honest, at least from an on-paper format. It costs the same as giving him a power fist but gives him a lot more utility in both the shooting phase and if they get in close combat (which is likely, as I intend for all my Angels to deploy from Drop Pods eventually).

Choices, choices. We'll see what we can see I suppose. Take it easy for now though.

I just love that the BaC minis are all perfectly usable in 40k. The Tac marines have a good chunk of their special/heavy weapons available for use (plasma, melta, flamer, rocket launcher, heavy bolter). Even the Termies and dread find uses as regular termies and a venerable dread. Although I do intend to pick up Imperial Armor 2nd edition: War Machines of the Adeptus Astartes at some point so I can run the dread as Contemptor (and pick up some of those juicy 30k tanks/flyers). As for weapons on Tac squads my friend who plays BA tends to just run a hand flamer on his sergeant (sometimes 2 if he's feeling bored). I usually either do just a combi-weapon on my sergeants, or sometimes a pistol (usually either grav or plasma depending on the special weapon in the squad) plus a power weapon. Never had that much success with 1 lightning claw, may just be my piss poor rolling though.

Final update for the night. I've gotten both arms pretty much finished up and attached. Currently working on the Heavy Flamer now and will have it wrapped up soon I hope. Down to highlighting and then final detail work on it and I'll be able to get it attached. Once that's finished, I'll get the left shoulder pad painted up (including the chapter emblem) and glued into place, then I'll be down to painting to backpack to finish the mini up.

Here's the progress:

Very happy with how the chapter symbol turned out on the right shoulder. Looks quite good if I do say so myself.

Take it easy for now, and more updates to come.

Quick follow up to show the heavy flamer now that it's finished up. Very happy with how the black came out, as well as the heat discoloration on the nozzle of the Heavy Flamer. Take a look.

Love this last image.

Home stretch, just finished the left shoulder pad and am going to be moving on to the backpack in short order. Here's where we sit at present:

Should have this guy knocked out later tonight, and will move on to the next member of this squad after that. Likely going to be the Sergeant, but I may go ahead and knock out a few more tactical marines wielding bolters while I'm working on rank-and-file troopers. We'll see once I get the box open and start clipping parts off the sprue for the next marine.

Next post will be the final update for this first tactical marine. Take it easy for now folks & thanks again for reading along.

One last note before I sleep tonight. I've started work on the back pack (no pictures yet, it's just the initial red coat) and took a few minutes to clip and start to clean the bits for the next tactical marine. I've decided to work on some rank-and-file models to flesh this squad out in preparation for the sergeant, which I'll paint up last to finish the squad.

I've decided to assemble the next mini in as complete a set of Mk 4 "Imperial Maximus" armor as I can using the bits in the new BA Tactical Squad box. It comes with one set of legs, a torso, and one head that all are in the Mk 4 style and look. My next marine after this will be a standard Mk 7 "Eagle" armored marine, and the one after that will likely be a Mk 6 Corvus suit, possibly without the studded shoulder pad (I'll have to look and see if I have any extra studded pads in my bits box).

More to come soon. Look for further updates in the not too distant future with a (hopefully!) finished heavy flamer marine.

Take it easy for now.

Thanks for that Adamski, as always.

This is the first member of what will be a Drop Pod mounted Tactical Squad. I'm still in debate on what special weapon to put on the Special Weapon marine. I'm leaning toward Meltagun, as that will give some (much needed) anti armor to the unit, though I'm also strongly considering a good old Plasma Gun too.

The Sergeant will also be getting a combi bolter to carry with him, Likely a combi-Melta, though I like the thought of a combi-flamer to help drop dual flamer templates alongside the heavy flamer. Bonus points on the combi-flamer in that there's no way to flub the roll on it when shot as a flamer, and it can be used to help on overwatch with the wall of death rule along side the heavy flamer if it has't been fired yet.
As an aside: There are few things that cause me to have the Black Rage more than dropping a 1 or 2 when firing a Combimelta as the one-shot meltagun.

Further updates to come. Take it easy for now folks.

Quick final update for the night. I've decided to take a break from painting red (kind of..) and devote some time to painting another Death Company marine. This one will be a little less detailed than the first example, but will be no less dangerous on the tabletop. I'm re-purposing some older Assault Marines I have laying around for this particular squad, intermixing in some of the new-school Death Company plastic bits to help set them off and make them look good.

I've just completed the second Death Company marine's base, and have gotten the body & head base coated black in preparation for the Abadon Black basecoat and first pass of highlighting.

This model will be a little quicker to paint I hope, since it won't quite have the level of detail/bits as some of my more recent minis. Depending on how fast it goes, I may carry on and keep painting on some Death Company to finish the squad of five models out. I may alternate it and paint a tactical marine, a death company marine, and back to a tactical marine till the squads are both done. I'll play it by ear and see what I can see as I paint.

That said, here's the base, and the marine as they sit currently:

(The bare spot in the center is where the foot will glue to the base)

Never fear, that mold line on the side of the grenades on his left hip will be removed prior to painting.

Take it easy for now folks.

Progression continues on the second Death Company Marine. I've got the marine attached to the base, and have all but finished off the torso, legs and head assembly.

Here's where he sits:

A little less red on him than the previous mini, but once I get the weapons and jump pack attached, I hope it'll tie together a little bit better. May also add a touch of red to a knee pad, but haven't made up my mind yet on that end.

I've started work on the left arm and shoulder pad, and have gotten it to about 85% complete. Just have to paint the bolt pistol casing red, and do final clean up on the decorative bit on the outside of the casing to attach the arm. After that, I'll move on to the right arm and chainsword and then get the right shoulder and jump pack finished up. I've slowed down a little bit on the painting this weekend (I attribute it to pausing to watch a movie instead of painting through like I normally do. Yay distractions. )

Further updates will follow later today. Take it easy for now folks.

Just a quick update for folks here before I head to work tonight. I made some very solid progress on the Death Company marine last night, all but completing him except for his Jump Pack.

Take a look at the forward progress.

Very happy with this mini, and though it doesn't have as much red on it as the previous Death Company marine I've painted, that'll hopefully off-set some when I get the jump pack attached, which I'm going paint up with additional red detailing.

Very happy with the shoulder pads and weapons on this guy. They came out very nicely I think.

All that said, I'm off to get ready for work. Take it easy for now folks.

Hey KB, thank you.

I've not gotten any of that particular technical paint from GW yet. I have several of the others though.

I may yet put some Blood for the blood god on the chainswords at some point, but I want to get some and try it out on some basing ideas I have first before I move on to using it on some minis.

Though if there are any miniatures in my list who deserve some of it on them, it's the Death Company and their chainswords I imagine.

Thanks for looking and I appreciate the comments.

Take it easy.

Yea I've seen it used on friend's models. I tend to do the gems myself (You can see other examples of gems I've done on here in previous pages on the thread) with three colors and a dot of white (Traditional style) with a final layer of 'Ard Coat gloss over the top to make it really shine.

I'll be sure to pick up some BFTBG paint though to try out next time I go pick up a pot or two of other paint at my local hobby supply store.

Cheers for the suggestion.

That heavy flamer guy came out quite nice. I love the red you've been getting. The heavy flamer and shoulder pads are very crisp as well.

Keep it up - when you treat all your miniatures as if they were all important, it pays off. Even john Doe looks cool and gets kudos from people

Exactly right Teban.

I'm not the best painter but I'm trying my best to paint to the best of my ability and make my models look as good as I can. I want this to be my main army (with my Guard being a close second) and for it to look amazing on the tabletop.

Hopefully as I progress forward my models will look as good as yours do there Teban. Fingers crossed anyway.

Thanks for the kind words as well. More updates will be coming in the near future, take it easy for now.

So! Today is a good day I think. I just got a new cell phone, meaning I just got a very nice new camera to take mini pictures with.

What better time to try and take some updated shots of Aedus?

Here's a couple of test photos I just snapped, will be trying to use this newer, nicer phone camera for future updates. What do folks think?

and

This is both a good and a bad thing, as it shows the pictures much more clearly, but also sadly shows all my little mistakes.

The up side is I'll see more mistakes and will be able to correct them, though.

Thanks for looking and further updates will be added later. Take it easy for now folks.

Wow that Death Company Marine looks fantastic, the contrast between the black armour and the white detailing and wings is beautifully exceptional. Really nice job Red.

The new camera work on Captain Aedus is looking good, very clear. Can't wait to see more of your work.

Thank you Adamski. I'm going for a very contrast heavy Death Company (lots of white and black, with liberal splashes of red mixed in on the armor and weapons) and I am really liking the way they are coming out so far.

I've had my painting stymied quite a bit the last couple of weeks due to real life, but I got back at it last night and got the jump pack to around 75% or so painted. I've still got to do the red parts, gem work, and other detailing, but hopefully those parts won't take terribly long to complete. Once it's finished up, I'll attach the jump pack and will be moving on to the next model which, I hope, will be the tactical squad sergeant. If it's not the sergeant, I will likely continue to paint up Death Company to try and finish off this first bank of five models (4x Bolt Pistol & Chainsword, 1x Powerfist and Bolter). I will also be starting work on some Scouts in the near future as well I hope, once I get the box in-hand.

Holidays, coupled with working two jobs at present is keeping my painting progress at a snail's pace, but I'm still making some headway a little a long, which is better than nothing.

I'll hopefully have an update posted soon with some pictures of the finished Death Company marine. Fingers crossed I'll get it knocked out on Friday and will start work on the next mini on Saturday. We'll see.

Take it easy for now folks & thanks for following along.

Hey Adamski, thanks for the complement, and good to see ya. To answer your question: They are indeed, by design I'll note.

I applied some 'Ard Coat gloss to them as an experiment to make them look like polished stones versus the actual gem work done on the other bits such as the gem on the hilt of the chainsword, and at the back of the jump pack between the exhausts and on the sides of the jump pack.

Hopefully it gives a nice contrast to the red there if nothing else.

Work has begun on the next Death Company marine, which will be wielding a powerfist & Boltgun. I've completed the base, and am about to get started on the legs and then the torso. Looking forward to getting one more DC marine finished up, hopefully before the end of the month in theory.

Take it easy for now.

'Ard Coat? I've never used that myself though I'm assuming it works to shiny up more than just those red jeweled drops?

Power Fist and Boltgun? Nice, will this Power Fist be as ornate as the previous one?

Hey Adamski, sorry for the delayed response, it's been unusually hectic here lately.

Yea, 'Ard Coat is a gloss clear coat, brush on in style. I use it on all my gems to give them some extra shininess. I've has a pot for YEARS and have barely used any of it eve still. Very small amounts are all that are ever required. It's a great tool to use on gems or other things that should be glossy like the surface of a display or screen, etc,

The power fist I'll be using will not be as ornate sadly, but it will still have some decent detail on it, and with the other parts being used, this upcoming marine should stand out a little I hope.

I'll be starting back painting son I hope. Haven't had time to lately over the last few days/week unfortunately.

More to come soon. Take it easy.
