Hello! Welcome to September's Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge!
For those who aren't familiar, this is a no-prize-related challenge open to any and all painters and hobbyists. Anyone can enter, from a newcomer to the hobby with your first box of minis to a multiple-time Golden Demon champion, and the winner each month will be decided by community poll, not just on the paintwork but on the effort, creativity and awesomeness of the finished piece!
Note: Paradigm who usually hosts this is very busy moving this month, so you have to make do with me. He will be around to answer questions and such, look for him in this topic as well. Please allow him to grab a post early on so he can use that for updated info if necessary.
For this month, the theme is: 'Never tell me the odds!' - a celebration of adversity and underdogs!
Some examples include: - A single figure or team, clearly greatly outmatched in numbers or strength. We all know how David and Goliath should have actually ended.
- Someone woefully under-equipped for the task at hand. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but it's certainly harder to stab with!
- A defiant figure making a last stand for something they care about, no matter how futile.
- You may choose to subvert this and have someone massively over-compensating. Please try and keep any models of TFG generic, so we don't get sued for specific likeness.
Do not feel you have to follow one of these examples - remember the poll is ultimately judged by the community - if you feel you can justify your entry matching this title, go for it.
How To Enter:
You don't need to ask permission to enter, just make a post with your proof picture - the parts (or most of them) that you're to use in your entry. It would also be helpful if you give the name of your planned scene or model.
This needs to be obviously incomplete - bare miniature, just primes, unassembled, a couple of base colours but clearly unfinished. It cannot be something that with a couple of touch ups would be considered "done". No proof, no entry
This month only there is no model limit on the amount of models in your entry.
Do try and keep your models relevant to the theme if you're entering a lot of them. If you need multiple proof pictures, just drop them in.
When you have finished your entry you need post a picture and much like on a game-show, confirm this is your final answer entry.
I will not guess that the photo you submitted three hours before end is a WIP or entry. You gotta say.
You're encouraged to post in this topic, share your progress photos, ask for advice, and cheer on everyone else.
So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month
Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
The League
How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins 1st September and will end at midnight BST on the 30th of September. After this, Para or I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Oh, one other thing, since we've listed the model limit this month, and are expecting a few larger entries, I think it's only fair we lift the pic limit as well. Please don't go mad and post a few million pics, but feel free to use as many as you need to adequately show off the finished piece.
I wasn't gonna, but that furniture turned up in the mail while I was making this topic.
I'm going to have to find a commissar torso and some epic 40k infantry.
It's a shame the Aeronautica Imperialis Aquila Lander is so rare or I could have got incredibly meta and recreated last month's painting contest.

Complete with some Blood for the Blood God on his hand, right? (lol sorry if that's insensitive, I just couldn't resist)
I will probably sit this one out, as I don't think I have anything that fits. I have a ton of other painting to do right now anyway, but I will follow along and enjoy the cool stuff everyone paints!
ZergSmasher wrote:Complete with some Blood for the Blood God on his hand, right? (lol sorry if that's insensitive, I just couldn't resist)
Nahhh, if I didn't expect people to make fun of my mishaps, I'd have just said I was too busy to finish. He'd be missing the side of his finger tip.
Matthew wrote:ooh, ooh, do a inception-y photo with you painting the Commisar who's painting some Epic minis!
For the end, I'll see if I can get my friend who actually owns a commissar outfit to pose painting with it.
I'm both shy, and look nothing like a commissar. It'd somewhat ruin the effect.
I may change the table as it has an assortment of crap moulded on it (compass, map, book and rulers) I was going to have a tiny diorama of the diorama on there, and a laptop open looking at Dakka. it seems a shame to sand those details off.
Filing cabinet's gonna have a page-a-day little calendar with the 30th Sept sat on there.
Oh! A couple days ago I pulled the cap off wrong, and sliced the side of my finger with a brand new Xacto knife. The blade was so new and clean that I bled all over my desk before I had time to react properly. It's meant I can't use my right index finger because it opens again.
Paradigm wrote: @Nev: Glad to see that guy make a reappearance, game-legal or not he's an epic piece! Got an adversary lined up to receive his charge?
Assorted Rebs, orx and Enforcers on the left, box of Plague Zombies on the right. Anything that's been painted is being repainted.
Any thoughts on him welcome!
Nice weathering. Only you could get a mini finished first day alongside your proof post. Slow down, you are making the rest of us look bad!
Sadly, I don’t have anything really appropriate to paint for the captain to be charging. No good hordes to face off against, and a lack of monsters. The closest I had was the WL I did last month. If I dig deep enough into the recesses of the workbench, I might be able to turn something up, but I’d not hold your breath. His foes will probably remain off screen.
Given that I normally struggle to paint a single figure a month this is gonna be a challenge! Gonna attempt my first diorama ever, of two PDF (guard) vs 4 nids and a broodlord.
I'm in, I'll get you guys some proof pictures in a day or two. Still trying to determine my Antagonist(s). I was thinking aliens, but there are a lot of buganids already. Then I was thinking zombies as I have a fair few and who doesn't need more? But then I thought... Wait... I have one of these:
Well, the guy on the left is who I'm talking about.
I can put pretty much anything else on the other side of a diorama from that...thing... and they'll be over matched
Of course, seeing that Big Stompy Robot reminds me I *could* use this challenge as a time to paint a few Mars Attacks human survivors and a boatload of Martians, giant bugs, stompy robots, flying saucers, etc... Kind of torn but...
So I'll probably move full steam ahead painting my Infinity Nomads to oppose the big guy (or some zombies, or remotely possibly the mars attacks stuff) and then suitable terrain.
Speaking of terrain... I'd like to knock out a full 2x2' deadzone-sized board out this month to use as the backdrop for the battle. Kind of going meta with the 'Don't tell me the odds!' thing as that's kind of a tall order within a month.
I'll get you guys some proof photos here soon, and some WIPs should follow in a day or two, I've been busy building and priming things the last week or so.
Frame it theatrically so that it's clear that the survivors are the focus. Have the zombies peripheral or looming rather than central, and I have no objections.
So I'm in. Bizarrely Januine and I both thought of doing the same theme independently (Space Hulk), so for the cookiness of it, I'm going to do the opposite of him. Therefore I'm doing a Broodlord up against 5/6 terminators. Question is who's the money on????
Im going to go for the absolutely unexpected and say that the Librarian gets possessed by a demon and sacrifices the other termies and the broodlord to Malal.
aldo wrote: Im going to go for the absolutely unexpected and say that the Librarian gets possessed by a demon and sacrifices the other termies and the broodlord to Malal.
Did I win?
Man! That is unexpected, I like the way your mind works
I am thinking of reversing my decision to abstain this month, as I came up with something. No proof yet as I haven't decided to do it, but I was thinking of doing something like a single Stormcast Eternal vs. ten Bloodletters of Khorne. If the odds are still not long enough for the good guy, the rest of my idea is to make a small diorama of a Khorne altar of some sort (complete with blood everywhere), suggesting that the Daemons are empowered or that more will soon follow...
At the very least, it would give me something to do with that single Stormcast Eternal Liberator that I got in that issue of White Dwarf, and I would have some Bloodletters finished for my Khorne Daemonkin army.
Sorry, due to time constrains I'm just copy pasting from my P&M blog
Okay so this months painting competition is started and the theme is "don't tell me the odds" so I figure what has worse odds than fighting in a zombie apocalypse? But all my survivors are painted and I only have a few zombies left to paint up....,good thing there's the option of overcompensating . So my plan is to have my new zombie killing faction going in and taking care of business.
Enter the Totenkopf.
Not saying all 20 will make it to the scene, but I need to come up with a good idea of colors as I want to stay away from the old German grey or WWII camp schemes.
In the ironcore universe the Germans escape earth which is racked by plague after excessive use of the gate technology. I'm taking liberties and making the plague a zombie apocalypse, and the Totenkopf are sent into a town to deal with an outbreak. Buttery commissar said I could use my zombies more as backdrop/terrain, so that just might be what occurs. If not, then we will have the closing of the apocalypse with all the troopers I make finishing off the last zombie.....for now
What I need are some ideas as to what colors the Totenkopf should be. I'm leaning more towards a bone white to the uniforms with the crosses being black. I see it as both a symbol of purity as these guys will be purifying an infected town, and also as a nod to the color of bone for the "Death's Head". I'm more than willing to listen to any other ideas thrown out there though.
I dunno if this is overwhelming or not, but a guardsman against a bunch of pathfinder tau guys in close quarters? Like, Oldboy style, with the guardsman beating them all to death with a hammer? Thats overwhelming odds, right?
I'm leaning more and more towards the Mars Attacks dio...
I've got more figures that I can get cleaned quicker, just as much terrain (possibly more scatter even), a wider variety of both heroes and villains, and several dead figures from both sides to sprinkle around.
Plus, I'm pretty sure at some point during the invasion (talking about the cards here, not the movie) there were probably zombies. I know there were giant mutant bugs, hillbillyesque human mutants turned against their former friends/family, and all kinds of other experiments. May just be that Ghorl will whip up a small batch of zombies to throw at the humans too! I've even got a Martian zombie
I dunno if this is overwhelming or not, but a guardsman against a bunch of pathfinder tau guys in close quarters? Like, Oldboy style, with the guardsman beating them all to death with a hammer? Thats overwhelming odds, right?
I'd say so!
OP updated, if you guys have titles for your pieces, give me a bell, otherwise I guess.
One thing I've always wanted to do would to have a theme called "I'VE GOT THE POWER!" which would essentially be someone or something with immense power, either physical or psychic. Such as an Imperial Knight firing all of its guns, or maybe some doing a Kame-Hame-Ha on someone?
Am at work with a raging hangover from too much makkoli last night so am just copying my proof pic across from one of my plogs. Will only be 1-2 termies and as many bugs as I can manage!! They're still not even primed - honest guv Oh Emperor, my head feels like there's a tantruming hormagaunt trapped inside
Edit: alright this is my first time posting here so I have no clue why these images aren't working
Generally you need the full URL address that links to the image directly. If you are pulling them from the Gallery here on Dakka, if you just copy and paste the link under "Forums", they will pop up like this
It's a cultist standing in front of a ruined wall, with bullet holes outlining his profile. A whole lot of to hit.
"Brown Pants" because that's the colour I'll paint his pants (and because if they weren't before, they definitely were after the round of shooting)
Well done showing adversity with one model alone, the rest of us seem to be going with telling the story with more models, you deserve credit for this - less is more as they say
TP^DC Deputy Manager wrote: Well done showing adversity with one model alone, the rest of us seem to be going with telling the story with more models, you deserve credit for this - less is more as they say
Cheers, but to be honest I just want to do something smaller than last month's T-rex
So many hordes of death and destruction, this month will be epic.
Me? I have some ideas but I need to obtain a few things, and if everything fails a guardsman holding the line is pretty much the definition of "against all odds", right?
@VorpalBunny: that's an awesome idea, and like TP said, kudos for doing it with just one mini! Sheer amount of painting aside, hue dios are the obvious/safe choice here (not to say they won't be epic!) so picking something more subtle is very cool!
@Kustomer D: wow, that's a lot! Can we expect terrain as well?
So my goal is kind of a 'never tell me the odds!' in and of itself. I probably can't get all of this done. In a vacuum, sure. But with work and a newborn at home shaking things up... we'll see what I can do.
I've been wanting to get some more Mars Attacks! done for awhile. The entirety of my unpainted collection has been giving me the stink eye since I let Imperial Assault jump the queue. Within the images below are the components of the main game box I haven't finished, plus several other things. Lots of things. Too many things! I think there are around 40 models if you don't count the scenery and wrecked cars.
But, I'll borrow a page from programming and use and agile, iterative approach: Knock out some Martians, then a few survivors, throw in a bit of scenery. Repeat. This way, even if I only get one or two waves done, I should be able to cobble what gets finished into a completed Diorama, even if it's smaller than I wanted. I'm planning to do the foam board they're standing on too, the smashed building behind the big stompy robot will be filled with a mound of rubble, there will be a road painted on where the cars are (maybe sidewalks too!).
The disposition of the scenery may change slightly and I may add or subtract actors at any time, but you've got a pretty solid proof of what I'm up to!
A final aside on the painted stuff. I've got more saucers and another Giant Stompy Robot, I just didn't have them assembled in time for posing in the proof shot. If I get around to them (I should, they paint up soooo easily) I'll get additional proofs of them in the silver (weird silver plastic is how they come). The truck I just recently started, so that's fresh paint and legit. The painted building will be included in any diorama that involves the entire board. If I have to shrink it down, then I'll probably leave it out. It was always intended as part of the 2x2' mars attacks board, but I started it ages ago before running out of steam on the project.
Ok, I'll give my idea a shot. Here is my proof:
The actual diorama will be done last; with everything else I am trying to get done I will be lucky to get just the figures done this month!
BC, you can title my entry "Last Stand of the Eternal".
. A pair of test Zombies for my DZ diorama, speed-painted but hopefully still decent. Not yet decided how they'll be based.
I'll need a least a dozen of these blighters for the dio, and 2-3 times that many if I ever want to play solo DZ, so I needed something easily replicated and fast. Lots of washes and drybushes, and I used glossy-ish paint for the flesh as a) its creepy and b) it doesn't need much highlighting.
And to kick their asses, an Enforcer Assault Trooper. The head is a spare Sefadu one that I see as the Enforcer equivalent of a MkVI 'beaky', the jetpack plumes are those leaves I bought for the KemVar glued to wire and painted over.
Well I should have taken a picture of my basement of shame with me covered in paint, because the odds of me painting some of these piles is rediculous. on the other hand I got a test color pattern done for the Totenkopf. Brought over from my P&M blog.
First test pattern for the Totenkopf. Still got some spots to pull out, I'm thinking of something for the kneepads.
Think of the classic fight scene from the movie "Oldboy", but replace the guy with a female guardsman, and the horde of gangsters with a tau broadside suit and a pack of pathfinders. Carnage ensues.
well i brainlessly started working on the coat before i saw how it looked with the legs.... so the coat needs more editing...
i started painting the legs, he still doesn't have arms picked out
Jepp, that´s a lot.
I´m not sure if I use all of them, might be a little hard to get good pics with the idea I got in my mind.
Terrain should be included, as far as I got all the materials necessary. I also only have about 2,5 weeks to finish it.
At the end of the month I can finally go home after a 4 month stay and might have a lot of timecut for this hobby.
New house, RL, work and stuff.
I´ll try to finish, but I can´t promise.
When painting Thallax, i go all 'auto-pilot' with the main colours; I think the tricky stuff with these comes when i start the basing and weathering.
It's 'into the unkown' as far as my painting experience goes, but i think i've got to step up my game a bit for the sake of friendly competition!
Quick WIP shot. It feels good to be back to painting Ultramarines. While I love the fact that the monthly challenge helps push me to do different things, there is something to be said for painting the familiar.
Stormwall wrote: I am not going to enter in any more contests, my new work has me working 12 hour shifts. I can't seem to get ahead with miniatures now.
Sad to hear that Stormwall. It's been great seeing your entries. If life organises itself, please come back and rejoin the party, you'll be missed
Please try and keep any models of TFG generic, so we don't get sued for specific likeness.
Would some Orks dressed as well known star wars characters be acceptable? Other than Yoda I would like to think the green skin and change in body shape would make them different enough? I ask because I won't have the time to make a diorama this months so am probably going to be limited to 1 or 2 models.
There looks like there are some great dioramas taking shape already, keep the good work going on them I'm hoping to see them all finished in time
Stormwall wrote: I am not going to enter in any more contests, my new work has me working 12 hour shifts. I can't seem to get ahead with miniatures now.
Sad to hear Stormwall, I did enjoy seeing your entries, I hope the job goes well and maybe in the future when you have time we'll see some more good stuff from you
That is very cool! As far as the Badasses of History go, Joan of Arc has to be near the top of that list!
There might have been a major change of plan on my end. Not sure I have the will power, time or skill to build a decent diorama base for my DZ stuff, and I don't think just plonking them on a mat would do them any favours. So I had a rummage and found something completely different, but that still fits the theme and still gives me scope for a little bit of diorama work without needing 20+ minis or a great deal of terrain work...
OK, seeing how quickly the good captain is coming together, I think I might have something for him to be charging. While it looks like most of you are going for “quantity” sometimes the odds are against you in “quality”
What at the odds of a space marine captain surviving a charge against a slaanesh demon prince?
Played here by an old Clan Wars Kyoso no Oni (which looks to be about the right size)
I didn’t realize there were two in the box until I opened it. Tac marine for scale. Hopefully I can get her cleaned up, assembled, primed and painted in time. If not, just picture her off screen.
I hereby admit to being a bit of a massive idiot: while deleting a batch of botched pics from the camera, I pressed the button one too many times and deleted the proof for my new idea... Since then, I've started one mini and finished two, so I can't really take another.
Last time I did this, as I was running the thread I just asked for approval from the thread and then added a note to the OP that I'd forgotten. This time, as I'm not managing proceedings, I'm going to leave it up to BC, as I think that's the fairest solution.
If you give me the go ahead then I'll keep on with the proofless current idea, but if not, I'll just finish it off then throw something together with the DZ stuff I do have a proof for.
You can recover from the sdcard really easily I've found, last time was with whatever the first app Google gave me after searching for "sdcard recover deleted photos" or something. If you've not taken more photos since, odds are great
Think I came up with something else. Still want to paint everything I've mentioned, but I'd rather do something specific/special for the competition so I don't feel rushed on other projects. I won't bother people with the details till I've at least got some paint down
Cool, thanks! Well, in the absence of a proper proof I'll at least outline the idea. I'll be doing the LotR 'death of Sauron' minis, so the dead Elendil, downed Isildur and the Dark Lord himself (and maybe a few ex-orcs/Elves/men into the bargain) on some kind of scenic base. The first two are actually done but the camera wasn't being kind to them today, so instead here's some WIP pics of the Big Bad. Still a long way to go, on both the cape and armour, but he's getting there:
As a huge fan of the LOTR books, movies, and miniatures, I really am looking forward to what you will do with Sauron and Isildur. Definitely meets the theme, as the odds were pretty long that Isildur would actually defeat the Dark Lord!
Okay, OP updated. If I missed you out, I'm very sorry, I've just done 16 hours of 40k tournament and am barely aware of how vowels work.
I'd like to suggest for the future, "Consequences". Past, present, or future. I think that could be fun.

not to poop on KB's present, but I've been idling on doing a headswap on mine since I got it. it's amazing, funny (there's a stepladder at the back of the pile) and really grandiose.. But he has such a 90s GW chimp face.
There's a Brother Vinni one mentioned and a Legendarion one (though he looks much older there, it's a very similar pose and base, but is 32-35m).
Read that as "barely aware of how bowels work" and had a good laugh at your presumed expense.
Also yes, the head on this sculpt is 10/10 on the ridiculously terrible scale, I am going to do something about it, probably grind it off and recast it off something else here. All the more reason why it won't be done in time for this challenge.
He reminds of the kind of caricature you'd find in the Beano and Dandy, or angling out in a football crowd throwing fruit. That chin could crack pavement.
I'm absolutely making him my secondary Lord Commissar, though. Yorkie gets pole position due to hilarity.
I wonder if I can get some of the detail from the brother vinnie model and move it over - I might email him and ask if I can instamold a cast of it and what I want it for, I'd imagine he'd be cool with it ~but who knows~
It isn't just the chin, the whole mouth is buggered.
I spy a beakie!
Looking very promising. And I'm impressed by the speed!
I've just found my plasticard flooring, and a commissar torso, so I'll hopefully get the diorama building mostly done tonight.
I'm still debating whether to use the provided table or not.
Maybe it is still early, but I am going to withdraw from the competition. I just have too much else to paint to get onto a relatively large side project like this. I will still follow the thread and enjoy the awesome stuff everyone else is doing, and I do hope to get back in next month.
Automatically Appended Next Post: After rethinking my idea, I decided to reduce my entry to a minimum. I will finish the whole dio, but I will only enter a little piece of it as my final entry. Otherwise it would be way to hard to focus on anything special in this project.

I am still trying to decide if I am going to enter this month. I gotta finish my armies on parade board, plus the army itself , and if at my glacial pace I am worried if this will take away from the board + army.

I adivse you enter. There is no limit this month
Yeah if anything I am thinking a two model entry, a plague marine vs a lone krieg guardsman. Kind of a futile situation if I have ever seen one, plus krieg are the kings of don't tell me the odds.
Currently headless before painting as the rather flashy collar for this guy prevents access to painting his face.
I managed to find a bunch of Epic commissars, hopefully those will turn up this week.
The front floor section will have a little something in the gap, I'm just looking for it at the moment.
Apologies for 2 posts, if I attach 2 pics using my iPhone, the forum just dupes the 1st.

Tip: If you're taking photos on your phone, do it in landscape (with the home button end on the right hand side). That way when you upload it from your phone, the pic won't appear sideways. I frequently battled with this issue until I figured it out.
We gotta run boss! Deys commin and yous outta bullets!
Runt! Never tell me da oods!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I've got the models washed for my entry. Need to build their diorama base/terrain. And paint them all. 20something days left though and wrapping up my other contest entry for the LoER so should be good to finish.
Looks cool but there is some perspective trick in the penultimate picture I can't unsee now, for some reason the grot's red cap under the three mushrooms makes it look like the tree has three eyes and is smiling. Funny.
But he still has ammo, Grots make wonderful throwing weapons, even when they are not crazed by warp-madness and teletransported inside the enemy's armour.
I think it's supposed to be a vox speaker, combined with the bionic eye, which makes very little sense, because people don't emit noise from their ears.
I had to speed up a little, cause as I mentioned I only have a few days left until I can go back home. RL will not allow me to do this for maybe a few weeks or longer after that.

I'll write out the whole bit (the relavent bit) when i post my final pictures so the relavence to the "never tell me the odds!" theme this month will be brought into stark relief.
btw: i'm a fan of the tiny mek things on your last painting challenge entry and the expression on the face of the boy in your current entry - funny!
One very varnished floor. Dunno why, but this pleases me. Shiny. Fun to touch, too. I'm trying to go for waxed floorboards and then the furniture and crap will be matt.
This pretty much matches my avatar colours IRL as well. That hat highlight is the most evil paint colour I own (neon fething pink) but worked over candy apple red.
The ear piece, laser eye and all that won't even show up on the final piece because of his ludicrous popped collar.
aldo wrote: Going well, amd I have finally learned how to base.
What do you all think?
Not that I’m an expert, but the base looks fine to me. Mini is quite nice as well.
Just did the baseing on my captain this morning. It’s simple, glue a rock and a tuft of grass on, smear a glue/flock paste on, and then swish around in a pile of flock. Shake off excess.
The second, demonic, half of my entry is cleaned and waiting to be primed. Hopefully I can get her done in time.
Well got my figures mostly assembled (forgot to attach the shoulder pads ) they have been primed and now have their bone basecoat done on them. UNfortunately the primer (new can) sprayed heavy, lost some detail, but hopefully not too much.
I hate it when that happens. Especially on plastic models... Oi... Typically harder to strip those.
Big team you have there. I'm just painting the five guys this time, it's ironic because the limit is up... but I think I prefer the 'Mashaaf is gonna eat some dwarfs' theme.
Looking great, Nevelon! Looking forward to seeing what he's going to smack.
I need to try and strip mini-me's real eye because I slipped and.. Well it looks exactly like my avatar. But my avatar looks like he's sniffed something.
Here's the diorama as of yesterday: I've started drybrushing, plus all the rocks are slowly getting a nice coat of Eshin Grey. There's at least a hundred rocks on there, and I need to paint all of them... the humanity!
I've hit on a slight problem for mister Brown Pants.
His skin is tanned (because Chaos doesn't always mean unhealthy in my book.) His pants are brown. His weapons are brass, because I like avoiding gunmetal.
The problem is the guy is way too brown, all up. He looks deep fried.
So I've ordered some Pink Metallic for his knife and gun.
My phone's playing up so I'll see if I can take a WIP tomorrow.

-14 scatbikes (paint)
-1 jetseer (paint)
-1 swooptarch (paint & base)
-1 crimson hunter (paint & base)
-3 warp spiders (paint & base)
-15 warp spiders (touch up & finish basing)
-3 distortion cannons (paint & base)
-Void Shield Generator (paint & 'base' = add vines, weeds, etc. to make it look like a ye olde VSG)
Okay, I'm sorry for being slow, but I'm afraid you're gonna have to take out the painted minis (or those that were painted at the time of your post). I checked with paradigm because of the quanitiy you're trying to do here.
The submission guidelines for the contest are flexible, but they're not mostly-completed-miniature flexible. Base coated or primed, 10-20% done is as far as has been accepted in the past.
If you want to use those models in the final display pics, to show scale of the army, then like the user who has some read-done zombies, you can include them but they must be out of focus and used as set-dressing.

No worries. When I post the pic of my results, I will only include those models that were unpainted to begin with. Not particularly likely to 'win' in any case, but posting here adds another layer of motivation.
hey just thought id post an update..
still a bit messy still needs touch ups
how do you think my green stuffing skills are coming along?
other than over sanding his pecks i think it turned out well
excuse the flash but i missed the morning sun for the photo
buttery!!! were did the cat come from???
i want one!

do you think the unhelmeted eldar head with the head gear works for him?
Well I had some primer issue with the models I was going to do. No way to get them all stripped and ready to paint in the time coming for the competition. However I would like to redo a previously unfinished project along the same lines. He WILL be overcompensating . It started as a iron warrior pre-Hersey knight model, now it will just be.....something else.
I hope this is alright to switch. The troopers I was doing just got an overcoating of primer and all the fine details we lost.

Oh crap, I just yesterday threw out the backing card for it. It's a Reaper "bit" aka when they sell you parts of a kit separately. You can find it in their online store. Also you can buy the cat lady figure for lots of kitties.
That looks like a cool model Theophony and I like how your Missed me wall can be used for other models VorpalBunny74
An update and some explanation on my entry. (Hint can't see myself on the list of entries yet)
Here's what I used as inspiration.
Spoiler:
I wanted to use this challenge to try making a few things with greenstuff rather than just filling gaps in. Here is how I'm getting on.
Spoiler:
Bases done
Ork Han Solo
Ork Chewbacca
In all my searches I couldn't find hairy/fury orks so could be a first? I did contemplate using brown static grass to make the fur but that would probably have only been hilarious for so long.... maybe
Then Luke Skyorker, Princess Leork, Landork Calrisian, Grand Moff Torkin, Darth Vadork, Emperor Sidiork, some Stormtrooporks, Eworks, Yodork, Ben Kenobork....

I could do this all day!
Get back to painting awesome BMG figures.
Can't, I've run out until the next supply drop comes in (hopefully tomorrow, my addiction must be fed! ). So in the mean time, how about...
You know what? I'd love a theme like 'unexpected allies' or 'You're not my friend!'. I... really want to make a Yarrick leading some Okrs against some Chaos Marines...
And I would like something about bright and/or striking colours and colour combinations, I don't know, "Bring in the Rainbow!" or a similarly nonsensical title, it would also fill a more technique related spot considering we already have 2 (3 counting Matthew's suggestion) theme-related ideas.
Oh, also, for maybe for a later competition "But you're dead...!", a miniature which reminds you of something that no longer exists, be it something cut from your codex (Bring in the Marbos!), a dead race (Squats, Exrah) or a dead game.
But its an idea for another edition really, I think we already have enough theme-related things for October.
Also, S't'orkiller, the guy from The Force Unleashed Star Wars video games
Hmm interesting. I was going more along the lines of "uh oh, I wouldn't want to see X down a dark alley" sort of fitting in with Halloween again and wouldn't have to be a diorama. You could have any of the Batman minis (every character would make you say uh oh, just depends if you are a good guy or bad), a Borg cube/tie fighter/other big spaceship, a school teacher (), a zombie, a troll, a big tank, or a big stompy thing. Anything that gives you that "gulp" moment.
Really liking those, SD, there's a real sense of movement in them. Quite often figures don't look like they're interacting with the bases, but these really do!
I'm still waiting on my Epic commissars to give my diorama something to hold. Paid for them a week ago and the courier has just collected them from the other end. I could have fething walked and collected them faster than this.
I am honestly probably not going to make this one, my attention has been mainly on my armies on parade board and I don't feel like that will fit the/theme even be done on time.
gambit has his throwing arm now it might need some more touch ups tho
@ sir donald thank you sir your unit has inspired my next conversion, although instead of robots popping out of the ground it will be a daemon prince, since i dont have feet for mine and i didnt care to sculpt them, either coming out of the warp or smashing through the ground

Aw thanks KD I'd love to have one of your custom creations they are awesome.
Well since its provoked quite a lot of discussion I think I will definitely have to revisit the Ork Star Wars idea for later challenges if I can get it to fit the theme, there is one I really want to do and already have the parts for just waiting on the right topic
Cheers B-C!
I showed my mate your entry idea - he nearly knocked over his cup of tea!
@LordRahl - safe! I made a point of posting more frequent WIP pictures than seems common so others could see how i failed/got to the end result - cutting the bases up was a pain as they're really solid! and i started regretting sticking the bodies to the plasticard so soon in the process because it made painting a bit more tricky than it should have been.
If i was to do it again, i'd get plasticard circles cut to be flush with the ID of the bottom of the base to make filling in areas less of an issue.
Still having problems making a 'blown sand' effect - the fibres i want to use aren't thick enough to take on a layer of glue, it's just beading and clumping.
I think this little effect is going to be my nemesis.
I'd be down for something along the lines of Trick or Treat.
Could be anything from sneaky gits dressed in costumes (the necron flayed ones) to some of those pics above where the irks are hiding behind posters and stuff .
Lovely job SD. I'd agree with Buttery - put it down for a while and dont look at it!! I'm having the same problem with a kataphron conv.
The sand looks great. Lovely sense of movement there. Nicel done
Yeah, you're probably right.
Maybe drybrushing pva on the fibres will work with smaller grains.
It's part of thier fluff; In HH book 1 on page 58 there is a short story which is the inspiration of these models.
I've been refraining from posting anything about the story 'till i've finished, but do you think i should post it before then?
Anyway, Cheers for the input and compliments, i hold you guys' skills and opinions in very high regard! I think i'll keep with that method, just with fewer fibres per clump.
It's a bit wonky as I'll sand and carve once dried, but I turned the book on the table into a laptop. Now I have to paint a tiny Dakka on there. Need to do some itty bitty paint pots, and I'm still waiting for the fething commissar from ebay.
Everything's just dropped on the base right now, i'm wondering about satin-varnish on the base as whilst I love the glossy waxed floor, it's very very gloss.
Here's my proof pic. Figure'd if I didn't enter I'd be spending all my time painting mdf terrain. This month's contest will get me painting at least a couple guys I've had on the shelf for a while.
Eye looks slightly big in terms of the detail, but it looks good. I'm lucky if I can get the flippin black dot centered
I don't recall if I have an active entry or not. The mars attacks thing isn't happening. I'm not sure if anything else either. I've got a game coming up next week and I want to focus on painting for that since I play so rarely.
If there's time after that we'll see, but I'd rather do something specifically for the comp and not just shoehorn in some models.
I love minis with a bionic eye/targeter. That way I don’t need to worry about both eyes focusing in the same direction. Not a huge fan of painting eyes, such a PITA.
I’ll second that it does look slightly big, but when the head is attached to the rest of the body, that will probably be fine. Looks good overall!
Well, it is a little cartoony to match my crazy-eyes avatar. But if I don't add the colour to the pupils, he looks like he's having too good a time. My epicissars finally arrived!
Most of the model has its base coat done, and is posses for the painting project title. Don't tell me the odds. The knight went to stomp a rhino, what are the odds that it was in neutral, and would cause the Titan to slip as if it was on a banana peel. Measles rhino with only its storm bolted takes down a might knight

Not to drag this off topic into Flashback Friday land too far, but:
Spoiler:
The pot on the far left is my go-to dark green, and is still good after ~25 years of service. I also get frequent use out of a Marine Dark Blue, Space Wolf Grey, and my RT Green Ink sees use on almost every model I do (I use it for frag grenades, plasma coils, and laurels) Here is a pic of my workbench, with other fossils scattered about
And so there is some on-topic content here, progress on the Oni for my captain to face off against:
im trying to decide between giving gambit just a stick, or turn it into a spear... and im going to GS some hair on the head i chose so he doesn't look like he has a spok head...
Feeling the pressure now - ten days left, started back at uni and i'm still not finished.
You read my mind!
In theory all I 'need' to get done is a dio base that could be simply a CD covered in sand and painted grey, but I feel that wouldn't do the minis justice and as such, I'm going to see if I can find time to do something better over the next week... if not, a CD it is...
May I suggest a 3/4 view of her from the front? We've got good archival view of all the sides, but a dynamic pic of her where we can see her face and side of the horse would be really cool. And it'd fit within the pic limit too.
Of course I suggest this, now that it is night time.
Guys! As usual I've got side-tracked by RL and a certain iOS Deathwatch game and my entry's gone to smeg (ask your Dad's children).
So I am changing my proof:
A combination of this lot will get painted. The Necron Warriors are pretty quick to do so they are "the odds". The Deathwatch are what will be the "against" element. Minimum will be the White Scars Captain - this picture is rubbishy for detail. If anyone is interested, go to http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/663710.page for more detailed images and the background of why I'm even bothering!
Let's talk numbers... We have 10 days left... (before drop outs) 27 participants... 9 pages of posts.. 2 folks who have had to leave us, and 16 folk who've posted WIPs.
So that's less than two WIPs per page, I guess. You slackery slackers. Come on, we want to ogle what you're up to!
Also I'm dyslexic, so allow a margin of error of.. quite a few either way.

Okey dokey, couple of (very poor) WIP pics. Been trying out some paints I've not used much, a blue steel that I've never really found a pace for and going to to try and mix up some flip paint for the chitin of the stealers. Was going to go for a traditional purple on the gene stealers, but began with black and a light drybrush to pic out the detail and now I quite like the Aliens look, so might just try fiddling about with different varnish finishes.
ILB, unfortunately if you post multiple pics using a phone, it just shows the same one repeatedly. Really like the shoulder pad and the chainsword through!
Against impossible odds, seven nights after being crushed under the Ecclesiorum building during the Second War for Armageddon, Calistarius conquered the Black Rage within him to smash his way out of the rubble and emerge as the mighty Mephiston, Lord of Death:
I originally thought of building Mephiston, debarking from a Land Raider, but the Land Raider just takes away too much from the character model. In case anyone is interested, here is the Land Raider, which is NOT part of my entry -- though I painted them at the same time
Talys, do you want to include that description (or another version) in the final entry?
I think in some cases folks would love to hear why the painters thought their piece matches the title, especially with the less straight forward themes.

Hey BC
Yes, please, I added the bit of text this time around because, like you said, it's not really obvious This would be perfect:
Against impossible odds, seven nights after being crushed under the Ecclesiorum building during the Second War for Armageddon, Calistarius conquered the Black Rage within him to smash his way out of the rubble and emerge as the mighty Mephiston, Lord of Death:
I am loving this glue conversation! I feel slightly nervous about confessing that I didn't even think about the wrath that GW might cast upon me when buying them from my local supermarket when I needed glue. And there was glue there. So I bought it. Damn my treachery!!!
I asked Para if he wanted me to do it, and he said that he'd have time himself. At a guess he's just a bit busy moving. I know he has a bunch of the previous unused suggestions saved, or I'd throw one up.
Talys, this is an awesome piece you brought out here.
I think your decision was right. The Landraider is fantastic as Mephiston is, too, but this way you can focus on him way better.

Thank you! Yeah, the original idea was Mephiston emerging from ruins transformed and entering a land raider. But that's just too complicated; let the character model be victorious himself!
I'm afraid I will be dropping out. I have detailed the reasons in my blog, but the short of the long is my mother is in the ICU at the hospital. Best case is recovery after 2-3 weeks in there (so I won't make the time table as I can't take my paints to the hospital). worst case is my phone rings at any time between now and then.
Please keep up the brilliant work guys. I may not be able to participate due to whats going on, but I will check in while sitting bored out of my mind in the waiting room. It will give me some solace to see good things happening.

All the best fella, seriously. And if you need to vent, or just have some daft distraction, we're here.
If you want to take a clear picture of how far you got, I'm not against counting that as an entry. Last month mine was unfinished due to hurting myself too badly to finish.

Hope everything goes well for your mum. My wife has been in and out of hospital for awhile so I can guess how hard it is. Don't abandon the hobby too much tho, you need to make time for yourself as well as being there for everyone else who will need you. Good luck.
