So over the past few years I've been bouncing around between a few projects: my retro Ultramarines, my Dark Angels, and my ever-present Valhallans. I find the Valhallans are the army I come back and add to the most, but I've never really had a great nemesis for them. Seeing how I'm going to be working on a Space Stalingrad table at some point, I'd want another army to share their basing that I could either have folks use when they come over or I could ally with them. I figured what better nemesis for Valhallans is there than Orks? Back in the day I had an Ork army I speedpainted called Da Dezz'urt Ratz that looks pretty sloppy in hindsight, so I figured this could be my chance to have a great looking Ork army. Orks have always been my favorite xenos and I thought it'd make a nice change of pace.
For army composition, I wanted to make a very "military" feeling Ork army, with armored Orks riding in trukks, artillery in the rear, and bombers overhead. For the line infantry I plan on doing Ardboyz in halftrakks, with a mix of scratchbuilt, Forgeworld, and kitbashed vehicles representing them. I figured this would also be a fun foil to my Valhallans, with their more serious Red Army look and mix of horde infantry and armor.
So after that wall of text, here's the first squad of 'Ardboyz.
I figure for future squads I'll simplify the scheme a little. These guys are a test scheme for the army, but I'll be trying to batch paint the camo a little more in future squads. Having to go and check every guy in the squad to see if his pants are jungle camo or his shirt is urban camo was a bit of a pain, so I figure by painting them slightly more uniform it'll speed up painting them. Either way, I'm happy with how they came out and there'll be more to come!

Well keep your eyes on the thread, since I've got some more progress! Today I got a Taurox kit and a Trukk kit and mashed em together to make a pair of Orky transports for the boyz:

I love how people always say the taurox makes more sense as a halftrack, and then orks will just loot it, make the changes, swap the wrong tracks for tires, and still make it work! How can you not love orks looting stuff. Mixing and bashing stuff together like that makes me deeply envious of the freedom available to some armies. Well done!

Thank you! The Taurox kit is one I actually really like, and getting to use it with another army makes me pretty happy. And hey, it's not stealing, it's looting
TheCustomLime wrote:Man that is one swanky warboss. Is he smoking a cigar? If not, he really should be.
Ooh! That's a really great suggestion! He's just got a big cap on one of his teeth that might look like a cigar at that angle. The Nobz kit has a bit which is a cigar pouch; unforunately I don't trust my own sculpting skills since it'd look like he's smoking a giant joint if I ended up making it! I'll look into finding a cigar for him though, it's a good idea.

Thanks! I've mixed in some older models here and there - a lot of the grots are old metal Gorkamorka grots, one trukk has the Gorkamorka canopy, I've got some 2nd ed grots and so on, but I don't think I'll go straight up retro in this army the way I do with my Ultras. I love the old Stormboyz models but it always kind of threw me for a loop that the boot-polishing, drilled and trained Ork troops were the ones crazy enough to strap on jetpacks. I'd love to do Kommandos in the old Blood Axe Kommandos scheme though:

With the first half of my artillery section complete (and no desire to paint vehicles) I painted up Mad Dok Grotsnik, a pair of old Gorkamorka Mekboyz, and a mob of 'Ardboyz in desperate need of a trukk!
Grotsnik was actually really fun; I've never liked the model, but actually getting to paint it myself really made me appreciate the mini. I still think his pose and GW paintjob kind of suck, but by breaking up the metallics with a Big Boss-esque bionic arm, I came to like the mini a lot more. The Mekboyz were really fun too, but they're downright scrawny next to a modern Ork boy.
The 'Ardboyz are my fourth and final (planned, anyway) mob in the army, and the one focused solely on close combat. I used a few of the old metal Tankbustas since they're uparmored enough to serve as 'Ardboyz, and I've always liked the models. I also used a few Ogryn bits I happened to have for the gascans and stuff, which I think really look right for a mob of boyz in a trukk. Finally, I cut the door off a Taurox I converted for these guys and got to use the door as a riot shield, which I'm super happy with! Instead of doing desert camo on the tan armor, I just left the areas tan and I think that was the wrong move. They still look fine, but not quite as good as my guys with splotches of desert camo. Ah well, they're still lookin' dead 'ard.
And that's all I've got for now! I think it's about time I painted another trukk before building a ride for these guys, and the upcoming mobs of Meganobz I've got in their boxes.

I figured at the rate I paint, just the stuff I have primed will last me until mid-2017. And if I dredged the recesses of my hobby space, I could find tons more of stuff to do. I’d love new projects, but my plate is full. Plus there is a limit on what I can afford.

To be fair, there's ALWAYS room for more Ultramarine helmets! A few of the 'Ardboyz even have Ultramarine shoulder pads because I couldn't make an army without putting at least a few Ultramarine icons in there. Although as a fan of retro stuff, you're gonna love what's coming up next!

I think the concern, Brother, is the fact that after the rivet seam on the trukk bed (in line with the exhaust) you've used for the platform there's no support, so any number of Boyz in there would cause the metal to shear off.
A length of plastic I-beam, or something similar, giving support to the middle of the platform would make it look more stable and, even for Orks, more believable.

While a diagonal support from the back corners to the body of the tank would work better from a realism POV, I think sicking an I-beam to the underside of the platform to make it look more reinforced would go a long way. And be mostly out of the way of your paintbrush.
All you need is something to show effort for orks, and their reality warping abilities can take over.

I understand where y'all are coming from - I'll see if I can fit a girder under the bed, but no guarantees since it's kind of a tightly packed model as is right now. It's also primed already so sticking to the paint might be an issue.
Also, I've got the following left to paint/assemble:
- The aforementioned Looted Leman Russ battlewagon
- Stock battlewagon
- 15 Lootas
- 7 Tankbustas
- 5 Mek Gunz
- 30 grot crew for said guns
- Thrakka
I've also got bitz for Kans, Trukks, and Nobz if I feel like building those out. I'd also really like to get a flyer for the army, as well as some goodies from Forgeworld, but I don't know yet. The army's around 2500 points right now, but I haven't totaled it up in a while.
