Hey guys!
Im starting this blog to help motivate me to get my guard going again after they were lost in shipping... Rip
Attached is a picture of my force commander ill post an update when ive done more.

The fluff surrounding my new regiment is:
The cadian 404th (regiment not found, get it?) are a standard cadian bunch of blokes, who were on route to the 3rd war for Armageddon when they were lost in the warp and ended up on a lost world without supply, they are surrounded by xenos and must survive long enough to find a way off the planet.
For this reason im calling them "the lost boys" and im going to try and make them as tough and unsupported as possible
Amy ideas with the modelling would be appreciated

I've got 3 heavy weapons lascannons in the work s and a vendetta coming up soon
The last pic of my commander wasnt very good, and im unsure about extreme highlights on the khakis. Any tips?

Hello guys, exciting times this morning as my vendetta arrived!! Unfortunately as i got it used its in very shoddy condition and needs some serious work done . thats what i get for buying cheap Eh?
Ive had to stick some struts in under the wings to hold them in place as they are magnetised but very badly so they hang down at different heights which drives me a little bit mad. This was a little more work than i had anticipated but im enjoying the challenge
The final issue is that the previous person was a little glue happy and splodged it all over the glass, will have to think of something cool to cover that up too
till next time guys

Forgot to attach the pics of the wing struts and saggy wings lol anyways imo the struts look pretty decent considering the fact they are just made of sprue.
Cheers guys

Hey guys quick update, finished one lascannon team. They look nice but im finding that they dont stand out from other cadian armys and they're rather characterless, so after this team im going to begin posing them to give each model "a little something" to make them stand out.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
hey guys,
now to give you guys an idea of what I intend to do, modelling wise, to make these guys look like they truly are the "lost boys" is, firstly I'm thinking that all of the infantry wearing the standard issue cadian helmets is characterless and dull. so I'm going to buy (when I do buy my infantry) a large variety of different heads to give each man a story.
ill try to pose the miniatures in a large variety of ways just to make them more interesting and something that I can be proud of.
Progress with the vendetta is slow, but I have a few tricks coming in the post, and I'm very excited to see how that turns out.
a large order of green stuff is also on the way :/ never used it before so it should be fun

The sideways images are a tad bit of a pain, but I think you've done a great job with the infantry so far. Hopefully you'll get your flyer up to snuff, too!

hey dude thanks for the reply, kinda felt like I was talking to a wall :(
I have been doing work on the flyer and I fell like its getting there, I just need to buy some green stuff to fix the gaping ugly holes in the beast.
I've also been working on converting a HW team and I'm really pleased with them, again I just need to touch it up with some green stuff.
will try to sort out the sideways images, lol can see why that's annoying, its just the way my phone does it for some reason

Heloo just a quick sneak peak on the vendetta, ive done my best to save the canopy but its as good as its gonna get i think. That said i am pleased with it. Definitely looks cool/different.
If anyones interested (lol nobody reads this thread) i bought some humbrol green clear paint 1335 i think is the number on it.
Named it "swift" pretty casual name. Hopefully it turns up on time in the heat of battle as thats its name. (please excuse the poor freehand)

When you put the photos on your computer, you can right click them and 'rotate clockwise' and it should fix the issue.

I definitely enjoy the tinted windshields on that Vendetta! It looks really nice, fits the fluff, and looks like less of a pain to protect from smudges and whatnot than the original clear stuff.

just a small update, this guy here is someone I decided to have a mess around with. I bought the three lascannon teams off ebay and for some reason instead of another guardsman accompanying the gunner there was a tank commander with a shovel. I thought that it was pretty funny so I decided to add a bit off narrative and try to make him stand out
first thing I did was to change his pose to have his foot propped up on the lascannon battery thing, and then I gave him a bolt pistol and a shoulder pad that only a guardsman with a grenade launcher would normally have.
I like to think the regiment has said "sorry your tank has been blown up, heres a shoulder pad (with a explosion on it) and a bolt pistol to make up for it!" the shoulder to remind him that he once could blow stuff up, but now he just chills out with a shouty lascannon gunner, hence his somewhat cheesed off/irate expression
you cant see it very well in the pictures but itll all come clear when I finish the whole model
cheers
EDIT: the pictures issue is also really grinding my gears, Ive rotated them but dakka just flips them round again...

hellooo
I have painted the tank commander and his lascannon apprentice, very quickly because I felt that the last pictures I took were rubbish so I want you guys to see him in all his glory.
I'm particularly pleased with his pose, as it was my first time using green stuff so I although the conversion/sculpt was basic I feel it looks effective.
at the moment I'm forbidding myself to buy more stuff before I finish the vendetta, but the temptation is great with some really good bargains on ebay. so the push is really on with the vendetta, should have him finished by the end of next weekend.
cheers

I really enjoy the pose and the fluff behind that tank commander turned lascannon spotter, my only criticism is that I can see a mold line on the side of his helmet in that last shot. He should be just golden after a quick trim, though. Good work!

Heloo guys, i have been fiddling around with greenstuff and have built a few sandbag walls for my hwt's and have continued painting my vendetta, i really need a large brush, im painting it with a medium base brush... But once these are all finished theres nothing left in the queue. So ill give you guys a heads up as to what i want next.
I think the first thing thats mecessary to make this army playable is guardsmen. Lots of guardsmen. Maybe a few conscripts for good measure.
I'm quite excited to do this part of the army as theres loads of room for customisation and individuality to make each man stand out, victoria miniatures do really nice heads that i can swap in, im thinking boonie hats, berets, dress caps, and beardy heads. The whole shebang. Vic minis only offer free shipping on orders over 50$ though. So im going to have to buy loads of neat little bits like ammo pouches and combat knifes here and there.
Then after that im thinking armour. Leman russes and maybe a wyvern or 2, these i want to fit in with the army so ill give them looads of stowage and heavily weather them. Maybe even whack a few sandbags on them too. And definitely tank commanders sticking out the top. They really are great for adding character to the tank and make it stand out from the rest.
Cheers guys
Soz for all that text

Hey guys, update on the hwt's 2 painted one to go. But. I got some catachan heads off ebay so i swapped a few in, and made some sandbags to add a bit more character.
Not totally painted but ill get there. Going for green headbands, as badass as these guard are theyre still cadians so no red headbands for them. Not manly enough.
Vendetta is v nearly finished i swear

Ok guys. This is mad. This was meant to be a new regiment to replace the old ones, hence them being the "lost boys". BUT. today my dad had gone back to my old house for some reason and saw a kr multicase in the garage. Yup.
The lost boys have been found!!!!
Im buzzing, its about 2000 points thats been found
2 leman russes, one pask
A hellhound
A sentinel
20x guardsmen
And the mad dogs, most badass veterans in the imperium, these guys dod a lot of damage back in the day.
A chimeria too

Yeah im super happy about them, best part is they're 99% the right colours anyways, no need for any dettol.
My past self was an alright painter anyways so i just need to add washes + highlights, then were all good.
Ive just won an ebay auction of about 50 guardsmen for about £25 which is like 72% off so ill take that, definitely will have to get the dettol out for them tho aha.
More pics come the weekend guys
Also thanks for responding, even if you guys just say "nice job" or something like that. Its just a little bit of motivation to keep it up

Hey guys so one squad of guardsmen have arrived in the post, theyll need a splash of paint and some tlc but tbh they're in pretty good nick.
One guy (who i didn't spot when bidding) was the sergeant? Whos absolutely covered in grenades. Looks like a complete psycho, i definitely like this model, however i think ill have to provide another guardsman a promotion to sergeant .
(i like to think the comms link on his head doesnt work and the voices in his head are issuing orders aha)

Ill pick up a spray of zandri dust and some black. And im gonna have a big weekend painting.

Ok guys, you may see from the pic that i have my work cut out for me. (you can never have too many guardsmen ) much dettol is required, some of the paint is horrificly thick on the guard but quality can't be expected when you buy this cheap. Ill sort them out dont worry guys, ill make them smart and proud again. Hopefully dettol will do its job so that i can do mine
Also its my holidays now so ill actually start achieving stuff

If I may offer some constructive criticism, it seems that while you have a really solid understanding of highlighting, your paints seem to be a little thick. I'd definitely look into thinning your paints in the future. Since it looks like you're following the standard Cadian scheme, I'd strongly suggest taking a look at the GW tutorial on the Warhammer TV youtube channel. They've got a bunch of great guides. All in all, I look forward to how this is going to turn out. Keep at it!

Right guys big update here. The vendetta is finally finished! (well not really i still want to weather it more)
Im super pleased with myself, i think the off white stripes look nice (they took waaay more effort than you think)
Hope you guys like it

@ smitty thanks for the feedback! Yeah i have just seen the gw video on how to paint cadians, and ill be implementing that into my infantry from now on. The only reason i painted them the other way was because a store manager recommended the wrong ones...

Hey guys!
Thanks for kind words about the vendetta
I need your opinion on something, and i kinda think it works but at the same time its kinda heresy. Space marine heads on guard?
Now this guardsman isn't painted or prepped yet because im unsure, do you guys think it looks good or nah? The only reason im thinking about doing this is because my local gw wouldnt allow it if i just rocked up with loads of cool ass guardsmen with non gw heads + rucksacks etc . So i figured as long as their heads are mostly gw then i can go crazy on the rest of them.
But yea please let me know what you think!
EDIT: page 2. What an honour

Post by: Ustrello

It works tbh since they are on the heroic scale and the space marines aren't that much bigger than guardsmen to begin with. Maybe give your manager a call and ask him if you can have 3rd party heads on your guardsmen, you never know until you ask.

@ustrello
yeah, no I asked him and he said it was ok as long as the majority of the model is gw. but at the same time he said don't take the piss and stick loads of non gw stuff on them, so I will definitely still get some backpacks from kromlech and heads from Victoria minis, just not on the scale I would like, maybe if I feel fancy Ill get a FW upgrade pack.

Hey guys,
So i had my first go at priming some if the models i had just stripped with dettol, and if you ignore the fact i have no idea how to prime things with spray cans it came out pretty well.
I definitely used too much paint so it pooled in areas and cracked on the commander. But hey ho its a learning curve, so ill just stick him back in the dettol and try again.
One thing i will say is, its so freaking easy. it took like 10 seconds. Any guard player unsure about colour spray primer. Dont be, its the best thing to ever happen to me

Spray can priming is pretty easy once you get down to it. Just make sure you are a good distance away, about a foot or so, and make sure not to spray for too long. It is better to do short quick passes than long ones.

Excuse my poor Paint skills. On topic, I'd shy away from helmeted marine heads, but I don't understand why 3rd party heads is that big of a deal when the model is still a clear majority Cadian.

So ive been painting infantry. Lots of em.
But one thing ive noticed is that 2 key elements of each bloke, the base and the face, are areas that im crap at. So if any of you have any good ideas on basing and facing. (painting faces ) then please say.
I've followed the youtube video that gw released, so now the khakis are a lighter colour.
Tbh though im pretty pleased with how theyre turning out

I followed this really useful guide that gw has released on how to paint cadians.
but yeah, it was either zandri dust spray primer (on the models that had been stripped) or just out the pot zandri dust
then an aggrax earthshade wash,
then rebuild the zandri dust not going into the darkest recesses
then as a final highlight pick out the pointy bits with ushabti bone.

its fairly easy and it looks awesome!

Okay the dettol is driving me mad.
So much scrubbing for so little reward... its does get the majority of the paint off to be fair but its such a slog, and theres always black goopy bits all over the model, so ive given up.
I heard great things about fairy power spray so i went and bought some of that, but apparently theyve recently changed the formula and now it doesnt work for stripping paint....
Plz help me

Did some snooping around for a better alternative and,
Where dettol has failed, amazon has delivered. Biostrip 20 everyone. Perhaps the greatest, easiest safest paint stripper ever!
2 guardsmen pictured, in there for 1 hour, and i just stuck em under the tap. Boom. Paint gone.
Its awesome, more expensive than dettol but 100x better. 10/10 so happy

Just to give you all a little heads up as to whats going on in the barracks this evening. Conversions is the word of the day, (along with biostrip<3)
From left to right you have
Catachan vox
Beardy sergeant
Grenade man mk2, (pondering what he could do with the mortar shell in his hand)
Empire state troop helmet? Nah thats a bucket hat mate
Beardy melta conversion + greenstuff toupé

And i love this conversion so much i gave him his own picture. "Chainsword doesnt work? A shovel will do. " - the infantrymens uplifting primer. Probably.

Lol anyways guys hope you like em, feedback would be nice. Untill next time!

We don't have Biostrip here in the US, and it makes me sad.

Faces, because we have to paint so many guardsmen, I just go with a light base color for the flesh, then stick a wash over it, then give the face some highlights.

nice work, for basing can I suggest you use little pieces of grey slate direct to the base glued in basically random intervals so no two bases are the same, get creative with characters, then a layer of stirland mud from the GW texture range, let this dry then drybush with karak stone, then when that's done a second very light drybush with a grey, and finally a light wash with nuln oil.

Once you've done that paint the rims in steel legion drab. try it on a test mini and see of you like the effect.

alrighty guys, so I was inspired by the huge amounts of conversions and the like that veteran sergeant has done on his thread. seriously awesome stuff!
(the link to his thread) http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/437416.page
so I decided i'd have a go, and to be honest I think some of the lasgun conversions I have done are pretty cool, the idea behind it was that because the regiment had been so long without resupply each guardsman had to keep modifying his gun to keep it working. Sadly I think that when put together they all just look a little out of place.
(ps I would fill the gaps etc before actually painting them I just wanted to know what you guys think.
Feedback? any ideas? to keep the force looking unsupplied and ragtag, but not too much?
cheers

Hello guys, sorry its been a long time, but I've been busy with studying etc, as exams are nearly here .
I haven't had any time to be painting unfortunately but I've been modelling a few guys and I'm pretty pleased.
so without further ado we have from left to right:
Bloke 1. Mr. GS goggles, I think that these are one of the easier sculpts I did, and to be honest I think that they look the coolest.
Bloke 2. I wasn't pleased with the rucksacks I made last time as they just looked too marine-y. so I made a GS Bergen with a bedroll on the top and tbh imo I think it looks rad and fits with the fluff.
Bloke 3. the giant of a man in the middle is called big john, I made him taller by sticking GS above his boots and at the waist. and gave him a stocky laspistol and a giant sledgehammer made from sprue and brass rod.
Bloke 4.then we have "the beard" lol this took me aages and doesn't look too great but I'm pretty pleased that I was brave enough to try and sculpt it.
ill try to slap some paint on them in the future.
EDIT: ive tried to rotate it like 5 times. sorry guys its not working, juust turn your laptops upside down or something

Props for the biostrip 20. Tried it for first time tonight, to strip back some of my first attempts at painting IG, is awesome!

Hey man loving the greenstuff work you've got going on here

It's good to see when people put a lot of personality into their regiment. Im thinking of doing an small auxiliary/pdf force to support my marines when they're done

As I'll have loads of spare, bare marine heads (why wear all that power armour and no helmet? ) I'll definitely be nicking your idea of putting them on some guardsmen

Pah! power armour is for wimps... But yes, a small IG force added on, not only suits the fluff, but looks cool as heck, even if they don't make it past turn 2.

Thanks a lot Panda! I love the IG but Cadians tend to all look the same and be really characterless, so I wanted to make mine stand out, (which with my 110 guardsmen in my army list is going to be a task!)

Aaanyways, sorry its only a small update but its kindof important. Black Lasgun or green?

Yeah good idea thanks man! I asked my sister the same thing and she said that both colours would look cool aswell. Thanks for the reply
Right! You've all been keen for a tutorial on how to do the SM packs that I made, I personally don't even like them, so this is for you RazgrizOne!
Step 1:
get as many bits as you can that you think would be on a pack. eg, grenades, binoculars, pouches, bayonets, etc.

Step 2:
cut off all the parts of the SM pack so it looks like this

Step 3:
Add on all the gubbins in sensible places, the bullets are from the heavy bolter feed, on the HWT sprue. And the pouch is just separated from the two other bits that usually attach to the back of a guardsman.

Step 4:
Be Imaginative! I'm not entirely certain what sprues all the bits are from, some of the pouches are SM tactical squad (I think.. ) but otherwise there just the canteens, pouches, grenades etc. are all bits that you get when you buy IG sprues.

Nice one guys, hope this helps, and sorry for the bad photos
EDIT: sorted the pics out, first time using the dakka gallery...lol

Do not stop with the conversions please (yeah, I know, your local GW store has to protect their game etc...I'm in the US so its independent stores where I live). Hello Guys!
With only 6 days of exams left, I have squeezed in some time to finish off the first squad of guardsmen that have been almost finished for a extremely long time!
What do you think of the bases? I think they look pretty cool but I am open to suggestions.

It was after this squad had been painted that I realised that they didn't have very much gear and so subsequent squads will be more heavily laden.

This is Sgt. Gray Ustrel, he is known for being a survivor, and a crack shot with his modified "long las" pistol with which he can take the hat off an ork at fifty paces. He lost his arm to a rowdy ork boy, who regretted leaving Sgt Ustrel with one good arm!
I named him after Ustrello as he has been a supporter of this blog for a long time, but don't worry I have noticed everyone else and you will get similar treatment My way of repaying you lot for being nice

Sgt. Ustrel accompanied by two of his squadmates with slightly cooler lasgun conversions

C&C always welcome, next time I update exams will be over and I can really get started!!

Hello Guys!
It is with great joy I'm bringing this update! Exams are over and now its time to get cracking

Remember the lascannon teams from like page 1? well I actually finished them now.. after a very long time. based and ready to go.

Heres a side view. Any tips on photography? I'm pretty rubbish...

But! with the completion of that HWT I now have basically as many lascannons as I do fully painted guardsmen at the moment... heres a group shot

not very much I know but I'm very happy with the standard each man is painted to.

That said, heres a picture of all the guardsmen that I have, and are all in various stages of modelling/painting... better get going

The next job on my list is an 8 man team with one HW, if you look closely you can see quite a lot of GS work has gone into them to make them look a bit cooler, aswell as some third party heads, and converted "long las" rifles. I tried to theme this squad as if theyre all firing a volley and It looks fairly good imo

Firing off a volley
And of course. you cant have " 'ard as nails " guard without :

BEARDS! lol I'm not the best sculptor but I think that looks cool.

Cheers
STG

AAnyways, just a mini update, with a cool conversion idea for you guys.
I went down to my local FLGS and picked up a £6 box of chaos cultists, now, before you all scream heresy, check this.

Heresy? nay, these traitor scum posess some pretty rad autoguns, so I removed the traitors from there guns, which was quite a task If I'm honest due to them being snap together. and ended up with this:

Pretty cool and un chaotic right?
so then I got my veteran squad, to which I added some militarum tempestus beret heads, for an extra veteran-y look, and heres the result.

and to finish off, because no STG guardsmen unit can get away with not having a goatee or a beard, I added both

hope you like them and sorry for the bad pics, the beards actually look pretty rad IRL so just take my word for it
excuse the paintjobs they will be redone, although they aren't too shabby for a 13 year old me
peace out

Nothing says "unknown and dangerous territory" like an unexplored forest, so I'd go with the brown base. It gives the feeling of having the soldiers walk through untouched nature, which, I assume, is the best for the 404

Post by: STG

@gloomy fenix cheers, yeah not one person has said that they like the grey bases, so I think that they're the better idea. Some jungle/forest foliage would look cool! no idea where to get any though...

Alright guys, you may remember from way back in the early days of the thread when I found my old guard army and I mentioned the mad dogs veteran squad. They had a plasma a melta and a heavy flamer, which was fluffy but not particularly effective, not to mention their less than fantastic paintjobs. so ive tweaked them, with a better paintjob and better gear, and ofc, BEARDS!
But the most significant conversion work came from stealing the cultists autoguns, mentioned 2 posts ago.

FLUFF: The old dogs are a collection of the most grizzled veterans of the 404th, who have against the odds, survived long enough to get grey hairs. This is something that carries great respect within the 404th. They also bear a black shoulder pad with a red stripe, this represents the bloodshed that they have been through with the regiment. It is for this reason that the someone who is wounded carrying out a selfless action during battle can be inducted into the old dogs, or have the honour of wearing the "Red badge of courage" showing their willingness to put the regiment before themselves.

This beardy bloke who wields both an autopistol and the slightly heretical spikey weapon (both stolen off cultists) is the sergeant, rising to the top of the old dogs through brutally effective CQB skills aswell as a cool head under pressure, he has got the Old Dogs out of sticky situations more than once, and always seems to find some form of amusement bludgeoning the enemies of the emperor across the head.

Tried out painting stubble on this guy, think It looks pretty good. I tried to make sure all of the squad have as much pouches, backpacks etc. so they can sustain themselves in the field.

this guy was on of the most converted, as he has a GS goatee, and a chainsword in his right hand, which nobody in the guard seems to have? so I had to improvise. I also like his autogun the most.

pretty standard, headswap, converted lasgun. cool pose IMO

Because you can never have enough mustaches.

this Is just here because I'm showing you a cheeky backpack conversion from a vox caster. they also have no arms because I don't have enough melta guns, so they'll have to wait till I scrounge some.

cheers guys tell me what you think! I'm pretty pleased with them and think they look pretty neat and stand out among the crowds of standard guard.
(also my photography is terrible still, please give me some tips)

Thanks Gloomy fenix! appreciate the support

Aanyways guys, the 404th are beginning to take shape, and actually be a sizeable army now, so I thought I'd just give a quick status report. (for the simple reason I was pleased someone replied to the thread) so:

I have repainted an old Chimera for the old dogs, which I have called "rustbucket" and I think its looking pretty good, I followed the gw guide on youtube. Its not totally finished yet, the driver needs finishing and a few touchups are needed. Of course the weathering will come next and it will get totally wrecked in the weathering stage to fit the fluff of the 404th.
The pics aren't great but ill take good ones when they're finished

Ive also blocked in the base colours on this squad to bring up the numbers quickly, although they probably won't see a wash and highlight until I actually go buy a drybrush, (may take a while)

I tried to model this squad to all be shooting or thereabouts, so notice the little bunch of guys on the right all firing... I thought It looks cool anyways.
also sergeant "Big" John and his massive hammer probably deserves some attention. just for lols

This next squad in the production line has been converted to be more sneaky, and so have more crouching members, aswell as a prone HWT and shortened lasguns (for extra sneakiness)

Here is a close up of the cooler posed models in the squad, the beardy (of course) sergeant wielding a handy entrenching tool.
A vox operater with a tweaked pose aswell as a catachan vox, because they look way cooler.
And finally just a lasgun wielding guardsman with a pose that I'm particularly fond of.

That's whats going on in the barracks of the 404th, please leave a comment if your liking whats happening.

Thanks guys!

I'd love to invest more time with mine and make some progress, but whenever I try to continue responsibilities happen and the poor soldiers get stuck in "Ongoing" stage.
Also, I love the "shortened lasguns, for extra sneakiness", just hilarious

I'm liking that camo netting idea, looks really cool, I am definitely bogged down in hordes of infantry at the moment, so I will post the updated chimera when I actually get round to it that may take a very long time though...

smoking I can do, rasta colours would be cool. I've got a few ideas cooking.

cheers lancs, I do try to keep away from the standard 'clone' cadians as they would be far too boring, and since I want to take like 110 guardsmen In my 1850 list I think I'd go mad otherwise.
(apart from my conscripts, they will be clones)

Hello again Dakka,
I havent updated in a while, but i have not been totally Idle.
I have got all the base colours put down on sneaky squad, and thats as far as they'll be getting in terms of paintjob for a while (no washes, highlights) because im going to drybrush the highlights in, and i dont yet have a drybrush lol.

but here is a pic of the cooler poses i put in the squad, because the colour makes it easier to appreciate them.

Snubnosed lasguns for reasons we all know about.

I also painted up an Aegis line, nothing special. to be honest i wanted to paint it grey, but i didnt think that would work with the fluff, so hey ho. Green it was.

Next guardsman squad in line, i couldnt really think of a theme for these guys so i'm thinking just "badass poses" for the whole squad. My 4 favorites are shown below.

From left to right we have: a cool guy taking a moment to pause and look into the distance, with his binoculars lowered
Next we have a demolitions expert who i think im going to call Pvt. Stonned, in his hand we have a packet of c4 and in the other we have the remote detonator (a sentinel pilots arm), and of course a cigar in his mouth.
and the end 2, are putting his bayonet on and reloading.
Note to SA
Spoiler:
I didnt make your character a sergeant because i thought smoking and plastic explosives were cooler than just a chainsword and a pistol. Hope you agree!

And to Finish off with we have a Group shot

Compared to my last one, seen here:

Cheers Dakka!

If you want it to have a little bit more detail, you could drybrush it a bit with an iron colour to make something like some camo colour went off, and put white glue in some parts and stick grass pigment to make moss or something (That is actually an idea I had for some scenery, it might be useful to you)

Thanks DaemonColin and Alaricuk! appreciate the good feedback!
So unfourtunately with school having restarted i won't be having much time to update this blog. BUT have no fear! I have joined up to the armies on parade on the 13th of October, so I'll have a goal to work towards and therefore hopefully be a steady stream of updates

so. I have bought myself a Bastion, and have another one on the way,

and this is my idea to have a cool looking armies on parade centrepeice:

Heres my Idea, so I'll have the double bastion placed at the back of the place of the piece with a leman Russ rumbling through the middle which will be preceded by a small gaggle of conscripts. there will be many guardsmen on the top of the bastions, along with the aegis line also loaded with guardsmen

What do you think?
Cheers Guys

Hello guys!
Its been a while because i lent my laptop to my brother and havent had i back and its only now i realise i can update this on my phone. Oops...

Anyway i haven't been idle, but not as much stuff has happened as i would have liked, progress is progress.

My last post showed what i wanted to create for my AoP board, but sadly that never came to pass as i couldn't fork out cash for the stuff necessary to convert it. (spent it all on getting the bastions) lol

I also didnt do anything about my board untill yesterday night and had a mad rush to make it happen.
Heres a wip from this morning (parade day)

You can also see the leman russ on there which ive re-painted since the last update previous paintjob seen here:
Spoiler:
and heres a pic of the updated scheme/paintjob :

But anyways, here is the final piece which i took to my local flgs this morning, even if i did feel like a bit of a plonker walking through town holding the board...
Anyways guys hope you like the update
Cheers

Hey Guys!
Firstly thanks GF Lancs and SA for the comments on last update, now,
it has been a while.... so it was my birthday last week, and i got some money off Gran, (big love to gran) so i decided to place an order with FW, and tbh im chuffed i did.

Apologies for the sideways image. but i got some upgrade kits, few weapons and an equipment pack. Imperial Armour is a very pricey book, which i wouldnt normally buy, but it was my bday and technically gran payed for it anyways. It is a really high quality book though, and i'll think of her whenever i read it.

Just had a quick fiddle with some veterans, and this is the result (obviously WIP) really liking how crisp the casts are though.

The guy on the left has one of the really cool looking elysian supressed lasguns, and the guy on the right had a bit of a conversion to get him to hold the meltagun like that, and im pretty happy with the result. He looks tired and is just dragging his gun along, (good job i dont have any Commisa...BLAM)

What do you think that the other arm of the melta guy should be doing?

This isn't the only thing i've been doing. 90 percent done on the squad that contains cpl. Stonned should finish that this weekend, but probably not bc i do nothing on weekends.
hopefully i'll get another update done soon.
Cheers

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hello again!
These dudes were nearly finished when i updated last time, but i thought i would wait untill they were 100 percent done. here is the final squad of first platoon!

and here are some closeups of the cooler guys in the squad.

the guy on the left is my favorite guardsman i've made so far, i think the pose with the cool headswap just gels for a badass looking guy. middle guy is putting his bayonet on, and the final one is reloding, which was a very easy but effective conversion.

And here they are, the main event. Sgt. Fenix and Cpl. Stonned:

Fenix is equipped with a mining axe, and Stonned is just chillin' with a large amount of plastic explosives and the detonator.
And bc you guys have been loyal followers of this blog ill give you both some fluff:

Sgt. G Fenix
Spoiler:
Gabriel Fenix was picked up by the 404th on a mining colony, he wasn't permitted to leave the colony to join the 404th but once the 404th's cruiser had made the warp jump, he was dicovered in a rations barrel.
Clutching nothing but his trusty mining axe and grim determination he quickly ascended to squad leader where his martial prowess with his axe was very often required.
Fenix doesn't take any crap from anyone, and you'd be a fool to get on his wrong side. But when crap hits the fan, you can rely on Fenix to save your bacon.

Cpl. V Stonned
Spoiler:
Corporal Vince Stonned is near enough the polar opposite of his squad leader, Fenix being headstrong, whilst Stonned is detached, and cool as a cat in any situation, and is quite often seen to be making jokes to his squad mates when the bullets are flying overhead.
Stonned is an expert in the use of explosives, many find it amazing that he hasn't blown himself up due to his insistance on smoking whilst handling high explosives, some mistake this for being careless, but in truth it is utmost confidence in his ability.
His level head has swayed the decision of his squad leader many times and saved their bacon without Fenix's axe having to do it the hard way

Cheers!

Hey guys, just a minor update today,
been having a play with some of my new forgeworld bits and stuff to make my platoon command squad, who are going to be equipped with a heavy flamer, and two normal flamers.

Here they area as a squad, all of them have gas masks of some form, because its dangerous to inhale promethium, when jumping out of the back of a fast flying vendetta into short range of things that want to kill u.

put quite a reasonable amount of work into converting them/posing etc. and i'm thinking about entering the january painting competition, but i dont think that i'll hit that deadline.
Now here's something i'm not sure about. below are 2 pictures of the platoon command, and the question is, which legs do you prefer?

I think i prefer the bottom ones but im not sure...
cheeers guys

The flamer vets sure a a great opction for a valkyrie. Let the heretics burn!

I'd say the bottom legs are the ones. The stock GW legs with the coat have little detail, and it makes the mini a bit boring. The other ones go along with the level of detail of the upper part of the officer.

Hello hello!
its about time for the monthly update of whats been going on in my life (hobby-wise)
So, without further ado
I've been trying really hard to make a Sm kill team for my brother so we can play kill team together, but the scheme i chose meant that the 'easiest' way to go about it was to prime using AP daemonic yellow. to be fair the spray itself isnt fantastic but i like the colour. But after no more than 3 sprays the nozzle would become bunged up and paint would dribble out of the can rather than spray. after going through about 4 replacement nozzles i gave up.

I didn't get the infantry primed but i managed to get a rhino to a satisfying level of yellowness (the paint doesn't cover very well so needs a few coats) and got it painted up. i think it looks cool.

i have since received feedback on the rhino and tweaked a few things for an overall better paintjob.

I also bought a display case on the cheap and installed it, and i think it looks pretty cool.

I am slighltly worried that my friends may see it in my room, and judge lol (i used to hide all my stuff when i knew my mates were coming round)
But i have decided to embrace the nerd-ness

i also made some scatter terrain, again so me and my bro can play more interesting games of kill team.

Nothing crazy, just some rocks on plywood bases and painted up.
definitely wouldnt recommend plywood as a base for terrain as it is very hard to bevel. luckily i have access to tools that make it slightly easier. however it is hardwaring as heck so it'll last longer than me probably.

And as a final thing i have entered the painting competition for this month, i entered my Graia Pattern Rapier laser destroyer, which i bought at the beginning of december. will post that up next month, and tell you all the result!

the proof image.

Cheers guys!

That some really cool terrain mate, really effective. Sweet looking rhino aswell, yellows always a hard one. In fact i go out of my way to avoid using it

Well done with embracing your neediness, just be confident about your modelling and people won't care.

Good luck in the competition & i look forwards to next months update.

Cheers SA! yeah yellow proved to be a challenge. enjoyed it though.

thought i'd just take this oppurtunity to show some progress on the laser destroyer. trying rally hard to have depth in colour, rather than just have a flat green, but it just came out blotchy. will look into a wet pallete to try help things along.

the 404ths colours proudly displayed on the side, although the cream stripe does look blotchy and 'orrible. its just a WIP though nowhere near completion. will show you guys when its done.

Also another side project which i was doing before was this forgeworld turret which i bought just because i got a free shipping voucher from FW. its now on hold untill i finish the rapier.

not very interesting but i thought it would be nice to update this more than once a month.

I would have liked to have done some weathering on it, and make it much more grimy but i dont have any pigment etc.
I will also go back and redo the targeting screen thingy bc I'm not 100percent happy with it.

This is basically the same post i put on the painting challenge log. Apologies to those who read both.

i finished my rapier for the painting comp! i'm not particularly pleased with the paintjobs on the guardsmen, as they were really rushed and i think it shows ngl.
that said i'm pleased i have painted something, and im also chuffed about the paintjob of the rapier carriage itself.

and here they are on my shelf, next to my other lascannon teams.

I would have liked to weather it, but time and materials i had said nah.

i'm pleased with the red berets, i think they look cool and are a nice splash of colour.

Cheers Dakka

This will probably get auto appended, but i'm just posting what im going to get up to next project, i considered joining in on next months painting comp, but the theme is Space Marines and thats not my cup of tea at the moment.

This is from the mines of moria set which i have tweaked to make it more fitting, and you can see (not very clearly) a wire tree that i've made up to add a bit of spice to the peice.

Heres a small woods that im in the process of making up. using a youtube tutorial i've made the trees from wire armatures. pretty therapeutic not going to lie.

Hey guys!

Firstly, thanks Craghack!

Secondly check out this terrain peice i made from the old mines of moria LOTR game starter set. really happy with the way the stone looks.

A last minute addition that is almost my favourite part of this is the streaking effect down the rocks. very subtle and improves the look greatly imo!
for those who are interested, its just seraphim sepia streaked downwards.

i'm also keen on the look that the moss growing on the sides gives. realistic, super happy with it.

the tree is just a wire armature with airdrying clay over it, and clump foliage for the leaves.

The only thing that im not too happy about is the base. i dont know what it is, its just pretty meh. suggestions??

Nice work on that terrain piece!

I don't see anything wrong with that base. If you were looking for a little more contrast, maybe give it a dark wash?

Hi Guys!

Thanks Cleatus and Fenix! I put the terrain in the showcase forum aswell, and someone said that the bevel of the base could be improved, aswell as adding some 'knee high' stuff because its a bit flat. i think thats the problem, but its finished now so i wont change it.. lessons learnt for the future though...

i have finished the woods now aswell! im surprising myself with my productivity

not as happy with this piece but i still think that its pretty good, should make my kill team battles much more interesting at least.

the two pieces together with some of the fighting 404th amongst them.

Cheers Guys!

Hi guys,
I have certainly been busy, but I have been unable to update due to my phone breaking so i couldn't take any pictures of what I've been up to.
So without further ado,

I made a light box! i just used baking film to go over the sides and with my new phone, my picture taking ability is really improved.

Remember these guys? yea they have been in need of some love for a long time, so i finished them off

They'll be glad to be finished I'm sure.

Also you may recall these dudes

Who got their base colours painted on just in time for armies on parade, but then didnt get any further than that.

Here's the motley crew.

Particularly proud of the prone AC team who are hiding behind a tree, with some camo netting for extra 'sneaki-ness'

And I have just included a pic of this dude because i Greenstuffed his beard, and put a bit of camo netting on his helmet, not sure if it works or not.

Anyways guys,

What do you think of my new picture taking technique? and what do you think of camo netting on beardy dudes head?

Cheers.

The camo netting is cool. I like it. I don't like the beard as it shows poor hygiene and a lack of discipline in his unit. That's just me though

Lol, I like it. Lots of character.

I imagine troops from your regiment hanging out seedy pub. An lieutenant from my regiment walks in, all snooty and clean and makes some disparaging remark about your men, Some salty sergeant laughs it off and offers to buy my officer and his staff some drinks. My sergeant becomes angry that yours didn't address the officer with the proper respect. Obviously a massive brawl breaks out until the local arbites break it up.

The next day my Lt (with a rather nasty black eye) barges into your COs command post to demand your troops be court martialed. In short, the CO throws him out on his ear. My guys arent all a holes but some of the young officers who went to school at the academy can be a bit... arrogant.

Good job all around. I ike a good plucky guard army.

Thanks dude, i was really proud of how its base came out. the inspiration just kinda hit me when i was making the terrain so i thought i'd whack a tree on their base, to make things cooler.
I also added a bit of clump foliage to their bases which i think improves them greatly.

Hope so, I spent a while painting his face! the beard beast is probably eating all the food he keeps in there when he's 'saving it for later'...

Nice work on the light box, makes all the difference, will have to try one.

Liking the auto-cannon team, is that a extra long barrel for extra power? The details on your bases are really something and make the army come alive.

Also how did you do the camo net on the helmet? looks wicked more of your guys should have that.

hey guys!
nothing that exciting today. just some pictures of this squad, who also only got painted up to base colours just in time for armies on parade, and then noting happened with them for an age.

so i got them all finished up.

Thought the pose on the autocannon team was pretty funny, the loader has his hand on the other guys back to reassure him, he's doing a great job purging the filthy xenos.

here are two seargeants and the guy with the greenstuff backpack, from way back in the very early days of this thread.

Big John and his hammer is one of my favourite models in the army. He's also been modified to be much taller.

these three dudes are jus there to fill out the numbers, but i thought id take some extra photos because there poses are pretty cool, even if the greenstuff work is letting the team down

But yea that's pretty much it. some armour on the way next. stay tuned, i'm excited to show you guys.

aha yup, Bob does his best, definitely recommend making a light box they're really useful. You do need 2 or 3 lamps to employ it effectively though.

Anyways guys, this is my chimera revamped.
This is what it used to look like;
Spoiler:

The difference is i chipped the paintwork and added some stowage I bought off ebay. Looks mucjh more fitting of the rough and ready 404th if you ask me.

I also wanted to add some weathering pigments but I just havent got round to buying them yet.

 GloomyFenix wrote:

Lol GF after like 9 months i finally got round to following this advice! cheers, turned out to be good advice in the end

Scions!

I got start collecting Militarum tempestus for christmas and im getting round to painting them now i have got them all primed up.

I was trying to get them to be much more like Tough as old boots special forces guys rather than wannabe spacemarines like the Militarum Tempestus try to be, so I got them a few upgrade bits, such as kevlar vests, DEVGRU heads, laser pointers, and red dot sights (from anvil industry). The boonie hats are from maxmini, and the sergeant has a forgeworld head.

What do you think? I'm glad that the chimera is finally finished. tbh im really pleased with the scions so far too.

Cheers guys, untill next update

The Scions also look beautiful in that style, it really gives the vibe you're trying to get, gongrats

I do like the original style of the scions (being 40k so gothic themed they go along with that pretty neatly, on a personal opinon) but it's true that they give that "marine wannabe" feel, which is kind of meh~

Yea to be fair, i do like the original scions, but they didn't fit the 404th aesthetic very well. I'm trying to get them painted in dpm camo, well see how that turns out.

Wow guys its been a while!
So since i last updated, i have done all my exams, travelled all over the world and generally living it large. lol.
but without further ado here's what i've been up to since my last update.

Remember this pretty average looking demolisher?

Well i gave it a bit of a facelift, by upgrading it with a forgeworld turret, and track guards, aswell as trench rails from Models and Minis Casting, really like their stuff, shame it took 5 months to ship though, jeez. Also did a bunch of weathering and whacked some camo netting on it aswell. Much better imo

But yea, i have also given painting dpm camo on my scions, not too sure if i pulled it off tbh. guess its not half bad.

Let me know what you all think! i will try to be more commited to the thread now im home.

yo! people of dakka!

here's where i'm currently at for my 6x6 Hellhound, which i entered in the painting competition, so it'll be finished by the end of the month.
if anyones interested i bought it from a company called Models and Minis, decent range of stuff, i also got the trench rails and the track guards for the russ from them. The resin is good quality but it took like 6months to ship which is pretty ridiculous, but hey ho its decent stuff.

So yea jus the main colours blocked in here.

Here's the complete gang of scions, 5 more to come. kind of annoyed that i gave them melta and not plasma, apparently melta sucks in this edition. Next batch will be plasma dudes.

The BOONIE HAT BOYS (really like these boonie hats)

Worth noting that i converted 2 of them to be on one knee, wouldn't recommend the conversion personally, was a massive ballache, but looks pretty cool in the end.

Fluff:
Spoiler:
The 'scions' of the 404th regiment are not off worlders, raised by the officio prefectus. No, to get into the toughest unit in the 404th you have to be a combination of tough, smart, and lucky as all hell. they all bear the regimental colours on their right shoulder, a reminder of where they came from, but they also have a goldstripe on that same shoulder (not shown clearly in the pics sorry) as a reminder that they are the best of the best. Colloquially known as the 'Goldstripes' within the 404th they are well respected and admired, with most men of the regiment wondering if they had what it takes to earn their goldstripe.

Some of the Veterans of the infantry have been offered to 'take the stripe' but have refused because they know life expectancy within their ranks is much lower than the already low odds of the infantry core. some probably just couldnt stomach hurling themselves from the back of a valkyrie at break neck speeds and prefer to remain on the ground. It takes a special kind of madman to be a Goldstripe.

They have access to the full arsenal of the 404th and can pretty much help themselves in store rooms, this leads to them being popular as they can sometimes sneak you a couple of frag 'nades on the sly if they like you.

Also tweaked these dudes lasguns, modified them with kroot guns and imo they look pretty awesome. the veteran was given a elysian lasgun.

Hope you guys liked this update, i enjoyed writing the fluff if anything.
Please leave a comment if you enjoyed!
cheers

Wow, that's some good stuff you got us man! I really like how the Hellhound turned out with the 6x6 style, the 6 months were worth it at the end.

The scions looks great too. You can see they're really pissed soldiers ready to kick some ass, and the fluff just strengthens that feel, great job on that one!

The guardsmen with the kroot gun barrels seem a bit strange (although it might just be me), but he Sergeant looks great with the rifle and the sword. I also noted the cards symbol in his shoulder, really good detail on that one. Is it a decal or did you paint it?

Yea man I'm really liking the hellhound too. It'll be finished soon, done more work on it as I entered it in this month's painting competition. Appreciate the feedback on the scions dude.

Fair enough, I thought it made the lasguns look like that Russian SMG from cod 5, the ppsh41 I think? Look it up they look pretty similar. But yea no that's freehand on the guys shoulder, tried to give all the veterans a unique symbol on their shoulders, but once I'd done three I got bored and lost patience.

Oh, the PPSh-41, I love it! Never thought about making something like that, it's certainly a good idea!
I you want a recommendation, since the PPSh-41 is a submachine gun your conversion might look a bit too long in comparison. I would cut the rifle's body to the magazine and put that barrel as a substitute. I know this sound awful, since only 2 out of 10 arms from the Infantry box set has the holding arm not attached to the rifle, but it might be a good idea if you just want a couple of guardsmen having the good ol' russian bullet spitter

Aha a bullet spitter, love that. i think for now i'll leave them as they are but when it comes to making some new ones i will definitely give that a go!

GloomyFenix wrote:Yeah, I can see why hand-painted symbols are so tiring, they must take ages to complete, but you did a great job nonetheless

Thanks, i do try lol

Thanks Big H! cheers for stopping by.

Right then, onto business!
I have finished the hellhound 6x6 and i think you'll like it, im very happy with it. I actually learned some stuff about painting tanks like the importance of recess washing and stuff.
**EDIT: forgot to include the old paintjob of the hellhound. included in a spoiler below
Spoiler:
**end of edit

I'd like to point out that the "404" on the front is freehand, so feel free to shower me in compliments haha

I also painted this guys face:

Thought i'd just include that bc i like these updates to be about more than one thing.

Anyways cheers guys

Wow, just wow.
That hellhound looks amazing, you really did a great job with it! The details are greatly done on this one, congrats! The 404 also looks great. Doing the complex symbols for the scions really gave you good experience on handpainting. As a side note, you could put some Stirland Mud on those wheels, that would just top it!

The scion's face is really also well done. It's like he's feeling a mix of rage and nervousness, love it

Nice paintjob on the hellhound

Looks great with the wheels set up as opposed to tracks.

Thanks dude, getting lots of good feedback on this. looking like im going to break my record of three votes in the painting competition haha. i think poor photography didnt help my last entry (the rapier battery)

CragHack wrote:Cool looking helmets and some nice weathering on Hellhound

Thanks dude! Which helmets are you talking about? I'm assuming the black one with the red visor on the scions?

Thanks, i did put some stirland mud on the wheels, its not that clear because i havent figured out how to take proper pictures where the colours aren't slightly warm. I think that makes it hard to see the brown on the wheels, but its there alright.

Oh, new scions, I'll be waiting to see how well they turn out!
Now that I see it, you should be ready for a 1000pt battle with that, why not give it a try?

It's no problem, man! I catched your thread more or less after you started it and I've been along with you with all your proyects, so, whether you want it or not, that creates at least a little sense of closeness. Heck, you even named one of your guardsmen after me!

Sup Dakka,
Just to let you all know that this will be the end of this thread for the foreseeable future, as I'm moving and all sorts of stuff going on that will mean that I won't be doing much hobbying.

I appreciate all of your guys support, it was definitely motivating to have you guys cheering me on.

Special thanks to gloomy fenix, we've had a good run dude, I'm hoping to resurrect this thread at some point in the future, and I'm sure you'll be here ahah.

Cheers guys

Really great work, and the consist use of an effective and realistic camo pattern pulls it all together- great theme! The recondo guys are particularly nice, and I hope to paint faces as well as you one day. Hope you're back soon, so I can learn more from your examples!

Hey Hey Dakka!
It has certainly been a while. Hope you all had good new years and christmas' !
Ive finished these scions after a very long time of them sitting there primed, i do need to tweak the blue on the plasma guns aswell as the imperial aquilas. for now their done.

Not really 100% happy with how these dudes turned out. think they're alright but I wasn't that hyped by them when painting so it was a bit of a slog to get it done. idk man i think they're just eh. at least i've finished them, and that's what matters.
The camo on their trousers really isnt that noticeable tbh.

Aaanywaays enough moaning, here's a picture of my Christmas haul of minis!

Got a sentinel bc they're awesome models, the white box is a catachan command squad, not planning to make a command squad, just wanted the extra bits. The Ogres i'm planning to turn into ogryns, so that should be fun. The space wolves were a surprise from my mate who doesn't know anything about 40k so ill paint them up just because i was pretty touched that he got me a thoughtful (and expensve!) present.
Kinda funny because i never told my mates about 40k or how i was into the hobby and now that i've confessed im a nerd (lol) they all buy me awesome presents! haha it was a big deal for me to tell them, and then they were all like "so what?".

Teaser of whats next on the agenda:

Rough riders, but riding dinosaurs! pretty pumped to get these guys on the paint line!

Cheers guys, its good to be back!
(i wont be posting as often but i'm active again)

Happy New Years!

Great stuff, STG- hitting the new year fast out the gate.

Friends can be funny that way- you think they're going to take the mickey out on you for your 'odd hobby' and it turns out to be a yawn- who knew?

I look forward to seeing the conversion for the Ogryns and what looks like the First Battalion Velociraptor Hussars coming along!

Post by: STG

Yo thanks Meer_cat! it was a bit of an anti climax compared to what i thought it was going to be lol.
I think the hardest part about the Ogryns is going to be their ripper guns.
As for the Dino riders its already proving to be a massive project and certainly my most ambitious conversions yet.

Ogres to ogryns is really easy, the trick is finding good ripper gun equivalents. If you want, I can take a few pics of mine.

Yea man id love to see your take on ripper guns. I was thinking i'd have to convert them to bullgryns if i couldn't find any suitable ripper guns, but i much prefer ogryns

Nice job on that He'll hound STG, looks really good with the wheels in place of the tank units (and the freehand is very well done indeed).

Scions look great! Don't know what you're moaning about... Though having said that, I know what it's like when you just feel that something hasn't quite worked the way you imagined.

At any rate, looking forward to seeing what you do with the dinos!

Welcome back!! Nice seeing you here again!!

I do like how the Scions turned out, although as Elnibbus put it, it might just be they ended up being somewhat different from what you expected, but they're still good nonetheless. You also seem to be starting some challenging minis, with all the sculpting and conversion, but you'll do it great. Hope to see them soon!

Also, your friends are great, love them!

Thanks Einnibbus, I think you've nailed it there. They look Alright but nothing like I expected which is probably why I was underwhelmed with them. Appreciate the feedback on the hellhound, think that's my best work so far.

Yoooo GF!! Yea I think I've definitely taken on some more challenging conversions now but I reckon I won't be too far out of my depth for them to look good. I agree my mates are cool as!
