Finally finished my first MEdge stuff! It seems most people start painting their Karist models, and so have I, for no other reason than that I find it harder to decide on a color scheme for my Contractors...

I decided I'd paint up a piece of terrain for each unit I finish, so I won't be stuck with a finished army and no suitable terrain. I hope I can keep it up...

The rock with the pink marking is a magnetic 'squad leader' indicator...

There's a couple more in my gallery. I think the top view is the most accurate color wise. Need to improve my photo workflow...

Awesome

Karists look great, and the vaguely Western styling to the building is perfect.

Looking awesome!

Can I ask what colours you used for the Karists? Or even better - how you painted them to look so good?

Post by: Sgt. Oddball

Thanks!

The Tempest recipe is as follows. All paints are from the Warcolours range that a forum member here produces, except for the washes and the Stirland Mud which are Citadel. First time I used Warcolours. They're generally very nice, just don't use them if you need a paint that covers very well, as most just don't (which can be an advantage too).

Undercoat: I sprayed these black and then 'blue grey 5' up to... maybe 3. That was when I thought I could do the armour with the airbrush. I now know I can't . In the future I'll just undercoat blue grey 5. The whole model was then washed with Nuln Oil.

Armor: blue grey 4 all over except in recesses, blue grey 3 highlight, blue grey 2 highlight, blue grey 1 edge higlight. The highlights are done with 'two brush blending', which is basically sticking a damp brush between your teeth and using that to fade the edges you paint with the other brush (not while still between your teeth!). First time I tried this technique. It's not very difficult once you get a little experience with it. The damp brush between the teeth is also great for quickly erasing small errors.

Suit: just the nuln oil over the undercoat that's already there, if I wrote this down correctly. I'll find out soon enough once I do the Troopers, they have lots more suit to paint.

Cybel energy: layer pink 5, pink 3, pink 1, then pink 5 + lahmian medium wash, re-highlight with I think pink 1, might have been 2, and a few final dots with I think pink 1 + white.

Metal bits: layer metallic black, metallic pewter, metallic silver, metallic white, (nuln oil wash on gun barrel)

Eye dash: layer ochre 4, ochre 2

Base: stirland mud, warm grey 4 drybrush, cool grey 1 drybrush, heki wildgrass (the tall grass), static grass (a pot with a mix of various Woodland Scenics flavours, mixed too long ago to remember which), black trim

Leader rock: warm grey 5, warm grey 4 drybrush, cool grey 1 drybrush, agrax earthshade, cool grey 1 drybrush, pink 4 marking, pink 2 marking

It's a longer process then I'd originally planned, but not too bad. I hope this was somewhat understandable, if not I'll try again!

That was fantastic.

It kind of read like a txt file I keep on my computer with all the paint schemes I've used. Something I ensure I have because I get halfway through projects, move onto something different then a few months later have forgotten what colours I used when I return to the original project.

I was going to try and learn to use my airbrush on the tempest elites (for something other than basecoating). Maybe I'll need to buy a few more from SAS to practice on.
:-)

Thanks again.

No problem, it actually ís a copy from a .txt file I keep . Forgot one thing though: pink drybrush around the pink bits to give a tiny bit of glow.
I'd be really interested in seeing what you can manage with the airbrush. I"ve not had the patience to learn to use it for detailed stuff. The fact I ran out of cleaner didn't help

Thanks! Lots of terrain pieces left to go...

Update time!

I finished 6 Karist Troopers and a building that I say is a derelict cybel energy power plant control station. A smallish power plant, for a factory.

I really need to start figuring out some forces, as up until now I've just painted models with random equipment...

Hehe, yeah, I wish that were a piece of cleverly thought out engineering on my side. Instead it went "d'oh, of course these won't fit over that corner where I just put that other bit of plastic. Damn. Where's my cardboard strips???" In fact, pretty much all of my building and painting follows this formula

Time for a long overdue update! I've not been as productive the past month, but I did create a 120pt list for both factions and I've assembled and undercoated all the models I need to field those lists. I also assembled and black-lined all the suppression tokens . Anyway, here are the first finished models of that batch, a Kaddar Nova and Shadow Walker. Of course they get a piece of terrain too: a ruined factory. This is the only piece of terrain I made that basically has its entire base covered in pva + sand, and it warped like nobody's business, which I was clever enough not to anticipate Maybe I'll think of some solution at some point...

Some more angles in my gallery.

Nicely done. The grey looks great on the Karists.

For the building base - paint PVA on the underside (a nice thick coat, so it softens the cardboard) and glue it down to a piece of masonite or thin ply.

I'm afraid my cardboard (or posterboard, rather) isn't soft at all any more, there's already a coat of glue on the underside... Clamping it to some wood might be a good idea though... or vinyl floor tiles... The Pringles tower in one corner, mound of sand in the middle and foamboard 'bracket' in front really did some odd things warp-wize... oh well, lesson learned.

Yeah, I'm covering a lot of ground with some cardboard strips and 2 terrain sprues, amazing things.

Moar stuff! I got my largest buildings out of the way now, so I'll be focusing more on models again for the next update (I hate how large stuff always takes loads of time, even with a simple, crude paint job). For now I have an Epirian vehicle workshop and two Bot Handlers:

It's dark and I'm grumpy for having thrown half a bottle of Nihilakh Oxide over the workshop, so the pics are worse than usual. A few more angles in the gallery. Next, I think I'll work on some Angels .

High time for an update! I have:

* Finished two more Tempest elites and a wall, and thereby...
* ... finished my 120pt Karist force! Oh joy.

If you would like to see _every_ painting flaw in one of those Tempests, please enjoy this 360 degree view:
Spoiler:

Group shots of Karist force and all finished terrain so far:

And, to round up, here's my 120pt list:

Kaddar Nova 120pt detachment
1x Kaddar Nova
6 Angel Minnows
4 Karist Troopers: 1x Quintarch, 1x Radwave Emitter, 2x Dudes
5 Karist Assault Troopers: 1x Quintarch, 2x Ripper Grenade Launcher, 2x Dudes
3 Tempest Elites: Hellstorm Energy Mortars
1x Shadow Walker
1x Mature Angel

The keen observer will have noted that I've actually painted more than these guys: 3x Tempest Elites with Ravager Pulse Cannons are in reserve. Also, because I made a mistake in my force list I had to paint over my clever yellow stripe on the Pulse Carbine mk2 on one of my Quintarchs... will probably have one in my 150pt list though .

Next in line are the remains of the Epirian force, including a Hunter . Terrain-wise I'm transitioning to non-man-made items.

That's extremely high-tech. I printed a 25mm circle with 18ish 2mm bars across, with 10 degrees rotation between them. I put the model on that and took 35 pictures from a tripod, turning the model one bar between each picture. I managed to mess up the first image so had to redo that (not ideal). Then load stuff into a stack in photoshop and have it work its timeline magic, export as animated gif, presto!

Finishing one motivates to finish the other, apparently! So, in more update-y goodness I've finished the Epirian Hunter and a Scarecrow with Chemtek sprayer. This completes 120 pts of Epirians, all shown below. Terrain-wise I painted four sections of crumbled wall and, venturing outside the compound, three sections of rocky outcrops.

And the whole force:

Note that the Epirians have a small reserve too: I've painted one more Scarecrow.

Edit: forgot to post the list:

Journeyman Bot Handler with Command Booster, Maglock Dominator Pistol & Aux Grenade Launcher
5 Contractor Engineers with 2x aux grenade launcher
Another 5 Contractors with 2x grenade launcher
4 Spider Drones with Cutter machine guns and Apprentice Bot Handler
1 Scarecrow with Maglock Railrifle and Clingfire Sprayer
1 Scarecrow with Maglock Railrifle and Chemtek Sprayer
5 Firefly Drones
Hunter with Maglock Chaingun & Flakk Cannon, 2x Strike Missiles

For your viewing pleasure, a 360 degree view of the Hunter (note: large file)
Spoiler:

The Plan following the completion of both forces is to build and paint the various objective markers used in the various missions whilst finishing off the terrain. When that's all sorted, maybe a battle report

Been working on objectives and more terrain. I already showed my Epirian faction objective here, now I've added the tiny Karist faction objective: the secret cache. Also did a bunch of hills and trees. With my table in its 6x4 configuration, I can now fill it nicely. Just want to add a few crates and barrels and stuff. Maybe a dirt road out of the compound.

Some obstacles built from cool things I had lying around and a set of Cybel Refinery objective markers built from scrap bits and the control panel from the Maelstrom's Edge terrain sprue. I've never really had a good idea of what a 'cybel refinery' of this size is supposed to be, but these are sort of terminals for tapping refined cybel energy from a partially underground source. Maybe terminals on a larger system, I dunno. They'll suffice .

Anyway, I now have painted everything I need to play the Purple Gold mission. Stay tuned

So for the past months my stuff has been in boxes (and still is), pending construction on our new house. My newly arrived Broken sprues, however, are not in said boxes, and I couldn't resist digging out some paints...
Because the Broken are a horde type army, and 120 points could get you an insane 80 guys (not going there...), I resolved to paint my Broken in a really simple and, more importantly, really fast fashion. Slap on some mucky colours, douse liberally in wash, et voila: my first Broken Rabble squad. Armed with two slug rifles, an auto slugger, and a Boss with beam pistol and grenade harness. That's a 6 point unit right there .

I have a functional hobby room again and, better yet, my stuff is no longer packed away. I've now finished some Karist Praetorians with cybel glaives and a Karist temple for them to guard against those pesky Broken outlaws...
Also, this is the first time I actually set my terrain on fire doing the photographs. It was an accident.

Broken patrol runs into Karist temple at night.

If I were to do it again, probably not thát long, though the watery bits take time if only for drying. This particular effort I started in February before moving house, haven't been able to work on it for most of the past half year. There were also some catastrophic blunders on my end that resulted in me chiselling out the pool and redoing it. Twice. I do have enough build pics to work up a little 'how not to' article.

The rocks are just foam carved and tore at with knives and fingers, sometimes prodded and scored with hot things like a soldering iron, until it looks suitably rocky. I then paint it with textured wall paint.

With the last few releases, there's now plenty of Broken stuff to assemble a proper force. I'd already painted a couple infantry dudes which will get assigned to some squad when I get the force worked out, and now I've added a full Rabble Fire Support squad and a Gnolti, because it's awesome. All done in the very quick and dirty paint scheme I chose for the Broken.

I've got over twenty more Broken guys assembled and undercoated, so I guess the next few instalments will be all about the Broken

I've now finished pretty much all the plastics I have planned for my 'Band of Broken', though I may yet change my mind a little. For 120 pts, I still need to build and paint some of the resins. I'm currently working towards:

Chieftain with beam pistol and customized weapons, grenade harness, trophy melee weapon, xeno spotter;
6-strong Rabble squad with chem launcher and glue rifle;
6-strong Rabble squad with auto slugger and longbeam rifle;
5-strong Rabble Assault squad with Marsayan Hypnotist and 3x massive torch;
6-strong Rabble Assault squad with Hakoyu Grand Master and 3x EMP harpoon;
2 Sig Jammers
Gnolti
5-strong Rabble Fire Support squad with 3x longbeam rifle

Another Chieftain, with customized weapons, extensive cybernetics, grenade harness, slug rifle;
6-strong Rabble squad with chem launcher and EMP harpoon;
4-strong Rabble Fire Support squad with 3x auto slugger.

For about 120 points. Bosses have some random weapons. I do want a Pa'ku as well though, so work in progress

Anyway, here's the pictures:

All the painted Broken so far.

The Gnolti, whom I got in the very same pose I already posted a pic of, sorry.

Thanks! Painting in a big batch is particularly suitable for doing a 'random yet consistent' colour scheme as you just pick a color and put it on 20 guys, but on different parts. Using the same wash over most everything also helps. I tried to have browns and dark reds as the most prominent colours.

Been a fair few months since the last update, but I did paint some things since then. Nearly up to date now with all Maelstrom's Edge releases so far and ready for the Artarian Remnant released at Salute this weekend

All the painting is of the quick and dirty variant, since that's the only way I can get anything done these days. I also did 20 pieces of quick and dirty terrain: some ruins, shrubberies and marshy ground. The shrubs feature in the below picks as blurry fore- and background, the rest will probably feature at some later point.

So:

Master Bot Handler for the Epirian Foundation

Contractor Drones for the Epirian Foundation

SecDef Tactical Team for the Epirian Foundation

Chieftain with xeno spotter for the Broken

Tech Chieftain for the Broken

Hakoyu Grand Master for the Broken

Pa'ku Artillery for the Broken
