After about 25 years off, I'm picking up the hobby again, and I got my hands on a great bunch of miniatures from a friend.
There is about 5000 points worth of miniatures in the bunch, and I'll be splitting it in three armies between me and my kids.
I'm going with the Alpha Legion, and so far I've been greatly enjoying getting back into the painting process...

So here are my first two marines:


I still need to get my paint scheme just right, but it's getting there...
Tell me what you think, I'm quite happy with these two, since they are the first minis I've painted in 25 years....

I've decided to not have two threads, and so I'll pull my inquisition thread here as well, and I'll also showcase the painting I'm doing for the other armies in the house (there is an eldar and an Ork army that are being built for my kids and they have a bit less motivation than me with the painting, so i'll also be painting orks and eldar...

So, my inquisition army:

The fluff behind the concept involves a radical inquisitor who is a former Battle Sister and who applies the Decree Passive scrupulously, there are no 'men under arms' in her warband, only women. I find this wording loophole so amazingly stupid that I can't help but play with it. (I always found it to be a cheap trick in The Lord of The Rings, when Eowyn kills the Nazgûl... )

The non-fluff reason is that I really like the Raging Heroes minis, and I want to use a whole army's worth of them...

So here is my first trooper, ready to be painted:


And here she is, alongside a Cadian guard and a howling banshee, to give an idea of the scale of these raging heroes (oh, and the paint on those is not by me, by the way, it's just figures I pulled out of my boxes of stuff I bought used...



As you see, size-wise she's very generic-human-in-40k-size, but her built is much more slender i.e. she's not 'heroic' proportioned with thick limbs and a big head. I also have their assassin figure and that thing is very tiny... They are going to be a challenge to paint, that is for sure... I'll have to take a picture of the girls next to the space marines I'm going to use for Cypher and his Fallen, the difference in bulk looks just right in that case, making the Space Marines look properly huge...

Very nice. A good mix of colours. Have you thought about drilling out the gun barrels? It adds an extra layer of realism.

Good idea, but it wasn't the kind of thing that I had envisionned... Maybe after a few more figures I'll start considering details like that...

I think they are good!

The hydra you have painted in place of the khorne insignia on the berserker torso is a nice touch.

To make the transition a bit smoother, have you considered painting a little watered down blue over the area where the green highlight meets the blue? In the pictures it currently looks a bit stark (but photos don't always capture the 'real' appearance of a model, especially as they are normally viewed from 4 foot away on a gaming table).

Thanks! I can't take all the benefit, these are part of a big bunch of chaos marines that I got my hands on from a friend who had done most of the putting together of the miniatures... I did do a lot of gluing in the last few days, the result if which I'll post as I slowly work my way through painting the whole thing...

All in all I have about 5000 points worth of things, that I first broke down in three 1000-ish points detatchments that me (with the Alpha Legion), my son (with the Iron Men) and my daughter (with the Purple Marines) will be painting and getting ready for battle...

So far, on my list, I have:

In addition to that I still have another squad of Berserkers, a squad of Plague marines, another squad of marines, a few cultists, 7 bikes, a squad of noise marines, a rhino (I'll probably put the noise marines in there, with the paintjob to go with it!), Abbadon, and then a few daemons: a daemon prince, a bloodthirster, furies, daemonettes (the good ones...), bloodletters, flesh hounds, pink horrors, flamers... Unfortunately i don't have quite enough of each of the daemons for complete squads, so I can't put together a 'proper' daemon ally detatchement. I can field a Khorne Demonkin detatchement, though, so that's probably what I'll be doing...

I also want to get my hands on a Dark Vengeance box to get the rules, the chosen, the cultists and the helbrute, and trade away the Dark Angels for more Chaos-y goodness...

Here is the whole thing as it stands now... Lots of fun to be had, I'd say...

Looking forward to putting them back together and painting... The thick paint they had on hid a lot of the detail that is on them... The Daemon Prince is gorgeous...

After an evening of painting, an update!

First a pair of Chaos Spawns:



The first one I got already with some color, so I only did a wash and drybrush on it... The second one was me enjoying doing a gradual color shift...

And second, I present to you: my possessed! I'm quite happy with the way they turned out, but they also showed me that there is a thing that I need to get better at: highlighting...











Still a long way to go before I'm good at this, but I,m starting to feel confident enough to tackle the more challenging characters... I'll do the Raptors next, I think...

Thanks! They are the old school (I think in the time of 2nd of 3rd edition) possessed. Their champion has big horns, a powerfist and a chainsword held in a tentacle, it will be used as a lord in the "Purple Marines" detachement of my army (painted by my daughter...)

As for the sound sample, I must say that I have no idea what it is exactly... Maybe I should have it say "This quiet offends Slaanesh" ...

I had two Abaddon minis, but was missing one of the claw hand, and had a sorcerer that was missing a hand... So I swapped a few pieces around, chopped off a few hands from plastic marines, and got myself these two characters...

This one will be used as an aspiring champion in a squad where they all have top knots, so he's the toppermost top knot:



And I'm not sure yet what this terminator will be used for, but he has a very sorcerer feel to him... The trophy racks are not yet installed, but I'll use Abaddon's long ones...

Today I got my hands on a Hulkbuster Toy, which I'll be fidling with to make it into a hellbrute or a contemptor, for my son's Iron Men detatchement...
There is also a hulk figure to go with it, it's about demon-prince size, I guess that something can be done with it...
And yes, for the record, I fully condone the shameless perverting of Children's toys to the service of the Dark Gods...

Also, I've been mulling over what to do with the squad of nine bikes that I have, and then the madness struck: 9 bikes, 9 traitor legions... by Abaddon's overcompensating topknot, I had it! My bike champion is already cleary World Eater, so I'll paint the other eight as the other legions... The madness, oh, the madness!

I really like those models, and the distinct lack of spikey-ness that they have...

My raptor squad is done, I'm getting slowly better at this...

An easy but effective method to do bases could be to get some of the basing stuff from GW. Just slap it on, wait for it to dry, do some dry brushing and done.

I love the possessed. They are very retro, and there's nothing that tickles me more than retro mutated chaos models. So thank you!

This is a very good idea! I'll do just that, I think...
For the 40mm and the 60mm bases, I'll find a model of scenic resin bases that i like and the termies and big guys will also get 'easy' bases...
Today I'll be painting my first HQ choice: Huron, and I'll be using your shiny Alpha Legion's method for his armor... I'll let you know how it turns out for me...

Very nice! With his current rules Huron has a bit of Alpha Legion a theme to him, so seeing him in that scheme is nice.

How many coats of the blue and green glazes did you end up going with?

I did two layers of blue, of a mix of paint and water slightly thicker than what I usually had for washes . The green over it is just a drybrush of vivid green just to get the sheen... I'm gonna use the same technique again for my other HQ for the detatchement, and in other combinations for other sections of the army. I have tzeench sorcerer that I'm starting in that has a basecoat of gold to build upon...

And yes, the infiltration thing of Huron felt really Alpha Legion, and I'll probably also have Cypher and a squad of chosen in that army, the sneak-iness will never stop... bwahahaha!

Time to make the Hulkbuster into something more... Dynamic...

He is too tall for a Contemptor, so I need to get him both shorter, and into a less boring position, considering that the only moving parts in this "action figure" are the arms...



So, after cutting off all of his limbs and adjusting the position, I managed to get him to do this:



He still is a bulky dude, but he's a bit closer to contemptor territory...



So he still needs a bit of patching up with greenstuff and a new paintjob, but then he'll be the Iron Men's centerpiece...

He can even do a superhero landing...

Have you thought about trying to make him into something like a Kytan Demon Engine? I think it'd be around the right size

I think he's too small for a Kytan... He would be a perfect stand in for a Leviathan-pattern dreadnought, but unfortunately us devotees of chaos don't get those toys... Maybe a Decimator? I'm not sure yet of how much spikey bits I want to put on him... It does look a bit too clean as it is to be chaos-ey enough...

Work had started on the Noise Marines that will go in that rhino that I'll eventually paint in an awesome livery of purple and pink...



There is still much metal and gold to be added... The bling will ooze from them...

And then I'll do five more with a pack of the new sonic weapons that I ordered from GW.

I think that it's one of the good thing with building a chaos army: the fluff and the crunch both support a wide variety of things...
And I'm tremendously lucky to have landed a stash of wonderful miniatures, where I have all four chaos flavors represented. This helps a lot with the variety.

And it also help to have kids who approach this with a more playful eye than mine... I would have never dared to make the 'Iron Men' that my son is doing, and which brought about this hulkbuster/contemptor experiment that I'm doing.

I'm swimming in the hobby these days, there are two friends of my kids who are also getting into it, one with the dark Angels force from Dark Vengeance, and another with imperial guards. So I'm also keeping my eyes peeled for cool vehicles to convert/pervert to the use of the Guards...

And then we'll have to have a place to play, so I'm thinking about my options for a game board/table that I can easily fold or stow away when not playing, and all sorts of things to build terrain with... My living room in warhammer 40k central right now, good thing that I live alone half of the time...

The Noise Marines are ready for the battlefield:



And I also got around to painting the 10th man of my CSM squad, as well as the first of my bikes. I'm not entirely convinced about the plasma effect...



And finally, this guy... I had a gold paint spill a few days ago, and decided to put a base coat of gold on his armor. And from there a seed of fluff was planted. He is the Golden Sorceror of Im'BekThak, clad in his golden plate, with his gold-plated trophies... I guess I need to write more fluff for my guys, It's fun to do!





I now have 2 HQ painted up for my army, I think that my next step is to dive into the cultists so I have my second basic troop, and then I'll have a playable army! No fielding unpainted minis for this guy, no sir!...

All hails the Golden Sorcerer, He who will melt your idols to cover the corpses of his foes !

I've traded already a few of the Dark Angels against cultists and the Helbrute, and I'll use the other ones for building a Cypher and a squad of Fallen... That's the plan at least... a lot of chopping and greenstuffing will need to happen for that...

After a couple of hours of chopping and filing, here is where the man stands...

I still need to fit in the sword that I'm going to put in place of the bolter he had strapped to his shoulder...



And I think that the sargeant has enough salvagable pieces to build him up again...

Awesome! Cypher is one of my favourite characters and you have really done him justice there!

I had put the finger in the gears of chopping up Dark Vengeance marines, so I got sucked into the machine and needed to complete the project of making the fallen for my Cypher...

So here are the first ones, mostly head swaps and the Chaos backpacks...

They will be painted in black, with the Dark angel heraldry in red, in 30k-style...

I think that having nine fallen should be pleasing to the lord of change...

Great update and very nice cypher conversion, but by the golden faucet of the emprah's bidet that First Fallen is magnificent, that is one Walking blasphemy, an twisted icon laughing to the gods.

To put it simply, I am a great fan of the pose. Looking forward to see it painted.

Basically those bikers are super cool! Really nice work

I needed parts to finish up a few squads that needed a few models, so I bought a box of Chaos Space Marines. There is some very good stuff in there...

Like this guy, who, with his combi-melta, is going to be the champion of my plague marines :



But what I mostly needed the parts for was to complete my noise marines, bringing the total up to eleven... I know that only ten can fit in the metal box, but they have to go to eleven. That guy with the blastmaster certainly goes to eleven and beyond...



I've also continues working on the Dark Vengeance models, Turning the Lord into a Sorcerer. I would like to have him on a disk of tzeench, but that is going to wait until I get my burning chariot...



And speaking of Dark Vengeance, my bike project is slowly moving forward. I now have all ten models built, although some might get converted a bit further to better reflect the Legion's personality of each bike.

The Dark Vengeance bikes have been Chaos-i-fied..



And here are the nine "legion bikes"



For some of then it is very clear which legion they are going to represent, for instance the champion with his khorne helmet and his axe is clearly going to be World Eaters, and there is one that I built today, with the "third eye" helmet who is clearly going to be Thousand Sons. The one that is already painted in Black Legion colors will likely stay that way, but will receive a re-paint...

Should I post pictures of each of the ten so you can help me decide which goes with which legion? I have four clearly decided and six still up in the air...

Lots of very cool builds in this last update. These bikes will look great, 9 is already a lot of them.

A package from Ka-Bu-Ki models!


It's the "Anubis" and "Steam Knight" miniatures. The steam knight is meant to represent Mortarion, but I'll use him as Typhus in my army, and the Anubis will probably gain a numer of wings and become a Tzeenchian deamon prince...




They are hard resin, harder than what I've seen from GW or Kromlech (so far it's the only two I've seen, I'm only starting in the resin world....), but I guess that means that the level of detail is much finer than what I've seen so far...



The Anubis is about the right size for a deamon prince



And again, the level of detail is impressive



I'm very happy with those two, I'll keep them in reserve for when I feel like really spending some time on a miniature...
For the moment I'm still in "getting the bulk of my army painted" mode...

Allright, my two cents :

a- Night Lords (4 or 5)
These maniacs would gladly decorate a bike with body parts of capture prisoners, if you have squeleton bits lying around...

b- Death Guard (4 or 8)
That could be your bonus bike. If one of them have already have heavy layers of paint and cannot be stripped, you can always add plague growths in greenstuff over them. But indeed I see what you mean with the wooden shield, and that could definitely work. That depends on the state of bike 8 i'd say, given that you also should camouflage the aquila on the driver's chest, Nurgle could also help there

c- Emperor's Children (8)
If you have the demon speaker from the chaos vehicle sprues, that would let that slaaneshy bastard ride in music. The idea with the wings would definitely work, you also have some ravenwing icons on 4 that could be defiled in the same way (but the axe is not subtle enough for slaanesh I'd say)

d- Iron Warriors ( 5 )
Finding one the bikes with large empty surfaces, to paint hazard stripes. 5 has a skull on the front that couls be painted like the Iron Warrior icon.

e- Word Bearers (bike 1)
The flamer guy would definitely work, then if you have loyalist bits such as purity seals, scrolls of fire that would do the trick.

Damn, now I want to get myself some bikes...

Thanks! Some legions will be (I think) a bit more challenging to my limited painting skills... The night lords lightning bolts are going to be problemetic, likely, as is the nurgling up of the Death Guard Bike...

Speaking of the Death Guard, I've been practicing the paint scheme that I want to put on the bike on some old school plastic plague marines...



And I've been trying to figure out how to do the weathering and rust that comes with nurglification...



The first one on the left is just basecoat and a black wash, the second one is a dash of rust-color drybrush, and the third has a generous helping of weathering powder added to the mix... Not sure yet if it's too much or if it's just enough...

I've continued on the Death Guard over the last few days, and I must say that I'm very happy with the result...

Next, I have a Herald of Tzeench on a Chariot that I want to put together, and the spare parts from the kit will be used to make a disk for the Sorcerer I made from the Dark Vengeance Lord, as well as Horrors and a Flamer to complete the squads I need so I can field a deamon allied force for my CSM army...

So far I think I have enough painted minis for a 1000-point game, It's a start...

Well, these two guys walked unto my work table...



I tried to give the one with the scourge a bit of a more dynamic pose, but the posability of these metal dreadnoughts/hellbrutes is not really condusive to very dynamic anything... I still have to think about how to paint them, though... I think I'll paint them in Alpha legion livery, and will call them Alpharius and Omegon...

I did get started on the Noise Marine's Rhino, carving out and painting the top star, in addition to the purple-to-pink gradation of color... That was much harder than I had anticipated, and made me wish very hard for an airbrush...



The blue star on top I first traced out with a pen, then carved out with a dremel, to get some "depth" to it. It made it much easier to paint and it looks like it was scratched on the rhino's armor...



There is still quite a bit of work to do on that rhino, including the "soundwave" pattern that I wanted to paint on the sides... I've also started basing my army in the same style as the plague marines, and the unity in bases does bring the whole group together nicely...

There have also been more orks added to my son's pile of things to paint, and a few eldars for my daughter, I'll need to get more storage space for all of those miniatures soon...

Hell yeah old school dreads, pretty fond of the static poses actually, this is part of their charm and mechanical aspect (opposed to the most demonic look of the current hellbrutes)

Nice carving on the rhino too, never thought about doing that but I like the result.

Yay! I got my hands on a box of old minis of mine that i was searching for for a while, and I wasn't sure what was in there... I must say that I'm quite happy with the haul...

The Space Wolf will have to wait patiently in the box again, since I have no plan to play wolves anytime soon, but I might want to pull him out and paint him one of those days...

I'm gearing up for a big game this week with my kids, to celebrate the end of the school year and kick off the summer holidays with a bang (well, several bangs, most likely, from an urreasonnable number of very large guns... I'll play Chaos Marines, and they'll play Eldar...

I have two breakfast trays filled to the brim of miniatures, most of them unpainted, but a significant portion of my chaos army is painted, enough at least to make me happy with the result...

I'll take pictures during the game and I'll keep you posted... It's going to be ugly, look-wise, with all those unpainted minis, but hey, at least we're rolling dice and moving miniatures...

The generals of both armies have been painted for this month's painting challenge, which means that they are going to be fabulous on the battlefield...



It's very encouraging to see that if need be, I now have a properly painted CSM force, including a powerful Warlord... I need to do some basing on the miniatures that were painted by my kids (that are not amazingly painted, but I'll happily keep them in all their badly-painted glory because they were painted by my kids... )

I've realized in the last few days and weeks that I have a lower treshold of starting to get things done for the building models part than for the painting part, but that once I get started on the painting, I can keep at it longer...

Now I just need to get things into some sort of organization so I have a few things to put together, which gets me into hobby mode, and then I just get on with the painting...

Well, the battle has started! It will take a few days to get through the whole thing, one turn at a time, since there are so many things to move/shoot/fight... The beggining of the game took about three hours, and we made it to the end of the first turn.

So, here is the board and the Chaos side of the table:



The object of the game is to be the player controlling the upper platform of the central building at the end of the game, so turn 5, 6, or 7...

The Eldar (played by my daughter...) deployment:



And she has in reserve three Falcons, one with the fire dragons, one with a squad of Dark Reapers, and one with a squad of scorpions, I have the impression that I'm not going to appreciate when these come into play.

So, the board is bare apart from the central building, which will make for a lot of shooting things down before we get into assault. With about 3700 points each, there is simply not enough room on my small-ish table for additional scenery... Besides, cover is for cowards, right?

But speaking of cover and cowards, we each have positioned our infiltrating units (her scouts and my Cypher/Chosen) on each side of the central building, out of sight of the other army.



I have the initiative and I go first, pushing forward with my bikes on the left flank, and drawing first blood when my helbrutes manage to take out a couple of Dire Avengers. The missile launcher of the rhino hits the Banshees, and take out three of them.

On her turn, she moves carefully forward, and then proceeds to get rid of my bikes. Psychic powers, Suncannons, Reaper Launchers, she guns them down very effectively. Somehow I had thought that hey would make it at least to turn two to run a little disruption in her ranks before being taken out... With all of her psykers, she has nineteen levels of psykers that generate dice, and so with that alone she took out three of my bikes...



So, here it it at the end of the first turn:



Losses:
Chaos: 5 chosen, 7 cultists, 9 bikes
Eldar: 2 dire avengers, 3 Banshees...

Cypher is just around the bend to bring some pain on the next turn, let's see how many pointy-eared pansies he can bring down before he's gunned down by Reaper launcher fire...

Well, unfortunately the kids are going to their mother's for two weeks, and we didn't manege to finish the full game. The turn three arrival of the Falcons behind my back was a blow that took a solid hit on my helbrutes, and they fell under the fire of the squad of fire dragons that proceeded to disbark...

We played through to turn four, at the end of which my daughter was in control of the central structure with a squad of swooping hawks and the autarch...

It was a bit too big of a game for her, she was a bit too bored during my turn. We'll scale it back next time to something a bit more manageable. I think 1000 point is a good target for now in our "metagame"... We're still learning the mechanics of the game, so it's going to be a while until we get everything just right...

I guess that the scale of them makes them more the focus of attention on a battlefield, and that I'm afraid that my painting will not pass muster under the close scrutiny that a centerpiece model is under...

I guess that gaining confidence in my painting is part of the hobby process.

And here it is after a day of painting, while listening to "Angel Exterminatus"...

Here is a little pet project of mine: a harlequin wraithlord made using the hood of the old harlequin jetbike as a head... I know it's been done before, but I like the idea too much to not give it a try myself...

The base is a resin base from tiny worlds, the decor piece is part of a falcon that I'm using as a crashed piece of terrain...

The arms are bits from the new wraithlord, since the old metal wraithlord's arms are a bit too static, and don't carry cool swords...









It still needs a bit of greenstuffing and adjustment before being painted, and then I'll let loose on the colors for the paint...

The Bloodthirster looks great! I know what you mean when you say the bigger models are intimidating, they can be quite the challenge (as my Hellbrute and Ork Deff dread can attest)

How are you planning on basing him?

I've ordered a few of the chaos-themed bases from scibor miniatures, I'll see when they get here which one will be used...

I have a number of large miniatures on my "to do" list (not the least of which is an Ork Stompa!), deamon princes, helbrutes, a tzeench herald on a flaming chariot (and a penitent engine...), that i never get around to doing, and so the rank-and-file get painted, but not the big things... Hopefully this deamon paint job will give me the confidence to tackle the rest of the big things...

I just recieved a trio of gorgeous resin bases from scibor miniatures, the one on the right with the big spikes will very likely go to the bloodthirster I'm currently working on, One of the other two will go, I think, to my deamon prince, and the third, I'm not sure yet, I would think that it should also go to a deamon, and I have a Tzeench-like anubis creature that I want to put together, and the "ancient temple" look would be perfect...



So many things to paint, so little time...

I'm quite happy with the result, and I will be more confident with my painting for large models in the future...

My next project is to finish and base my son's Iron Men so that I have a full Khorne Deamonkin force...

Oh, and on another note, I created a new hobby space in my appartment, a table where I can leave my current projects lying about...



The pile of bags is a bunch of BattleFoam bags that I managed to snag during their spring clearance, and I'm very happy with them... Now I almost have enough bags for my whole collection....

While gathering the miniatures that I have lying around the house, I got my hands again on one of the most cost effective kit that I have bought: the tzeench flaming chariot...

Out of that kit I got:

A flamer, an herald of chariot, a few horrors (there are still enough hands and heads and tentacles to build another one with greenstuff for the body....), and a flying disk for one of my sorcerers...





I really like the look of this one...



I magnetized the disk, so it will be easier to put him in storage...

Got started painting the sorcerer, I'm getting sucked into tzeenchian joyness...

The sorcerer's coming along nicely! Great choice of bits, too.

Is his left hand from the DE Wracks kit? I've seen it before, but I can't remember where

With all the painting that I've done in the last months, I calculated that I had about 2500 points worth of chaos painted (plus about 500 painted by my kids...), I should really get everything out and do a proper army picture...

Well, this has found its way to my door, fueled by my tax return...



I will be starting my journey into the 30k...



And I even got myself the forgeworld GamesWorkshop store exclusive praetor...



I have the impression that it's going to take a while to get everything built and painted, but I'll look through the rules to see if I can put together the proper forces from my already painted chaos marines and play a few games while I create my legion forces...

I'm really tempted by blackshields, the customization options and the modeling possibilities are just too tempting for this chaos player...

I also bought a catachan command squad to get the bare muscly arms for the pariah armors, the bare heads, the flamers, even the banner... All the good stuff, and the remaining bits will be fed to the cultists... !

So, here is the fluff from my band of blackshields:

A Death Guard expeditionary force is sent to the outskirts of the galaxy, into the halo. They are geared towards void warfare and boarding space hulks. So there is a lot of terminator plate (of all patterns) and breachers. They are hardened veterans, many recall the days before the Primarch, when the Legion was called the Dusk Raiders. When the heresy breaks out and they finally hear of it, they simply cannot go along with it, and they decide to take back the grey and red of the Dusk Raiders. They become the Sunless. Still exploring deep space, still just a handfull of ships. They have limited supplies, so they canibalize the armors of their foes, for one, and even their own, and that is how they develop their version of the pariah plate. They need the parts for those who are the breachers and the void fighters, so there are squads who forego some parts of their armor so that their battle brothers can be protected.

So, with the Cataphractii terminators of the calth set, there are a full set of five pairs of lightning claws, and it kind of defeats the purpose of assault weapons if, well, you can't actually assault very well... So I'll give the shooty stuff to the cataphractii, and use some good old chaos terminator bodies for the claws...

So, here is the first of the sunless...

They are under the Ordo Xenos jurisdiction, so my inquisitor can tolerate them, but I can imagine many interesting interactions between my radical Ordo Hereticus lady, and the master of the Watch...

And the Salamander. I couldn't resist giving the mighty hammer to a son of Vulcan. I probably will put the other in the hands of a son of Ferrus Manus. Somehow there is a poetic beauty to it...

two Heavy thunder hammers, two hammer and shield, and one that I haven't decided the loadout yet... He's going to be a fleshtearer, so I think that claws would be appropriate, but likely a single claw with a shield, so that the three shield guys can take the fire as they come in towards close combat and protect the two heavy hammer guys...

Turns out that the deathwatch marines are tons of fun to build, considering that each can have as much personality as we can muster...



Here is one of my favorite so far, a dark angels librarian in terminator armour...

Lots of new plastic (and metal, and resin...) in the last months, so I thought I'd do a general "state of the hobby" update to this blog. (and since the 8th edition is coming, I though it a good point in time to see what I have at hand to get things started on the new edition...)

I had, a little over a year ago, filled my living room table with all I had in miniatures, and this is what it looked like:



And so today I did the same, but the living room table is not nearly big enough anymore, and so this is what my living room looked like this afternoon, with everything that I have built and bought this year... There are still things that i haven't built, especially for the sororitas part of the army, but also a few squads of harlequins that are still on sprues...

Which is the original chaos army of a year ago, plus my son's Orks, my Daughter's eldar (I'll likely end up painting a large parte of those, that's why I'm including those in this "state of the hobby". As you see, there is a lot of grey in there, most of my armies are still largely unpainted, with only a few miniatures painted here and there, except for the chaos space marines part, where I've gotten a bit further.

So, here are the armies:



In the back:

about 4000 points of orks, about 4000 points eldar, about 5000 point of chaos space marines, and 2000 points of my 30k blackshields, behind about 1000 points of deamons.

There is thus likely going to be a lot of diversity in this blog over the next year as I try to paint as many of these as I can...

Oh man you're gonna be busy. I almost felt less guilty about my horde of unpainted stuff for a moment there. Almost.

Since for this month's painting challenge I'm doing my broadside, I've decided to give my Tau paint scheme a proper airing before I start painting big battlesuits.

So here is the paint scheme I have so far:



I'll have a 5-man breacher squad, a 6-man strike squad and the three stealth suits done when I'm through with this batch and until I have to start priming things again, which I might be able to do today, although it's a bit cold outside...

And here is what I did to the poor unsuspecting old-school plastic suits that I got in an old tau starter box and some mixed sprues of extra bits:

A coldstar commander, a since crisis suit, and a missile broadside:

So, after a successful few days of painting, here is the result, what I had originally planned, plus a Crisis suit...

I've also primed the other suits and another batch of Fire Warrior, including a converted fireblade...



The idea is to have them tabletop ready as fast as possible so I can play with a fully painted army and stand behind the statement that I made to my little playgroup that I don't like to play unpainted minis...







They are far from perfect, but they are good enough for me for the tabletop, and they are very good practice for the more challenging armies I still have to paint... (I'm scared of eldar and harlequins, I must admit...)

Thoughts on these?

Looking good so far. You've definitely hit your target of a decent tabletop standard.

Once you start hitting some of the orange areas with highlight they'll really popular on the tabletop.

I still have about twenty Fire Warriors to go, and then I have a squad of a dozen kroot that I still need to find a color scheme for. I quite like the old-school multi-colored kroot, and I'm leaning towards painting them blue to match the underarmor color of my fire warriors.

The thing with orange and highlights is that I'm not quite sure what to highlight it with... My yellow is horrible at covering (I use Vallejo paints, maybe I should find another yellow...), and I feel that yellow highlight might just be too much...

Orange is a strange color...

Pushing forward towards the completion of my Tau army. It's a small force, but since I have yet to finish a complete army, I want to get it done and be able to play with one finished force...

I want to be able to live by my higher inspiration to never field an unpainted mini... It will still need a lot of work, but once I'm done with the Tau, I can sleep more soundly as a hobbyist, knowing that I at least have one painted army...

The commander goût somme plaint on him today, along with some of my drones...

In theory, the next step in my army painting is going back to the chaos part of it (and some of my deathwatch and sisters...), and the bikes are certainly on my shortlist of things to get painted, along with a few of my deamons...

I think I have to take a new "full painted army" shot for my chaos soon, because the one on the first page here is out of date, and I'll do the same with the other armies I have in the works... Some of them only have a single fully painted mini (my deathwatch, inquisition, eldar and blackshields forces only have a single finished mini each...), but it will make things interesting to see each grow...

My Broadside...

The Broadside is looking real good, the army will look spectacular when its all done!

I still have to finish the Tau, but now I got my hands on a bargain-priced batch of Grey Knights, so now the focus is on them...

Long story short, I was missing a few pieces for a full squad of termies and a full squad of paladins, so I bought a box of termies to complete. This leaves me with enough spare parts to flesh out the rest of the force, I'll have an apothecary, a paladin ancient, and this guy, a Grey Knights chaplain, Brother Tomas...





I feel that I might have been a little to light-handed on the purity seals...

The Grey knights have firmly staked a claim to my desktop...



I'm doing them for this month's painting challenge, and it's moving forward quite well... In a few weeks' time I'll have them fully finished, along with the strike and purgation squads that they come with, and I'll be happy...

here is a building and my grey knights for scale...

My grey knights moved very quickly because of the leadbelcher basecoat, and this has convinced me that Games Workshop spray paints might be worth using, so I got my hands on a can of mephiston red, since I have tons of dudes to do in red. (Sororitas, khorne dudes, orks, eldar...) So I tried it out this weekend, and damn, it's very much very useful...

Only with spray paints, the Gargant already looks like this, very much playable without too much shame...



And the silver and red - sprayed chaos marines actually look already pretty good on the table, even if the berserkers will look better once the gold and metal is added to them, and that the alpha legionnaires will look better with a few layers of blue-green glaze on them...

But all in all, I'm now very happy with my gaming table and how my army looks on it...

That Stompa looks pretty good with just the sprays! Did you base it black then just layer on the red to get that fade?

Exactly. Abbadon Black, then a few sprays of Leadbelcher here and there and on the underside, then Mephiston Red... I had the very good idea of magnetizing the arms, head and other bitz to make the whole thing manageable to store and transport, hence the different colors on the different bits...

Well, I had a flash of inspiration for my hulkbuster dread, which is not yet painted, by the way...

It's size is deffinitely in the leviathan range, but he only had the hands... So After a bit of surgery he now has a cyclonic melta. I need ways to make holes in tanks in my list, and this felt like a good one...



Oh, and on another note, I made an Alpharius too...

Here is the Leviathan Hulkbuster with the Iron men...

I red-coated the rest of my berserkers to add to this little troupe, along with Kharn also...

It makes for a nice little battleforce I must say...

I've been riding the wave of my Alpharius to build my 30k (which I will also mostly use in 40k too in one shape or another I think...) Alpha Legion force (so that makes 2 30k armies for me to paint, I really need to get cracking on the painting for 2018!)

So first Alpharius:



I used vellejo blue and green transparent paint on a leadbelcher base coat and it has worked great...





I also got my hands on a sheet of Alpha Legion transfers, as well as bottles of Microset and Microsol and I must say that I'm quite happy with the result.



Now I'm building my 30k force and changing things up in my blackshields also to round up the Alpha Legion force.



My 40k Alpha Legion will get a adjusted paint scheme to fit more closely to the 30k AL, and so i can field a massive 40k Alpha Legion force if need be... (and knowing the kind of games that my kids like, the need will come up at some point... )

So I already have almost 3000 pts...

The new years resolutions are holding, and I've been working on my 30k Alpha Legion. In the process I've learned the hard way why one needs an airbrush to do metallics... My method (leadbelcher spray basecoat with Vallejo transparent paints on top...) works fine with small surfaces, but those big flat panels on the rhinos are all paintbrush marks... That's why I added more black panels to the rhinos than originally planned.Once they get weathered it should be fine, but I'll have to change my method before I paint other transports... On the drop pod the streaking is in the direction of the pod's entry, so the weathering will take the same direction. I'll see how it goes...

I recieved some Forgeworld parts, enough to finish building my Alpha Legion force: Weapons for the terminators, five more seekers and a batch of lascannons for a heavy team.



Since I got my second box of Calth, I have doubles of the two characters, so I built a pair of HQs: A primus medicae (I have to add the needle and buttons to the narthecium...) who will hang out with my terminators and since I was wondering what to do with my deamons, I built the first of an small detatchement of Word Bearers: a diabolist. I've been waiting for a long while to find a use for that sword...

Today is a good day, it's my first finished models from 2018, some Alpha legionnaires.

First up is the first half of my seekers squad, built with the Alpha Legion Headhunters kit.







They are far from perfect, but they are good enough for me, and certainly good enough for me to put them on the table for a game, and that's where I'm going with this army: play with it!

Their ride is also coming along nicely, although there is still a lot of work to be done on those rhinos...



I'm also done with Orthrus, my contemptor...





So, for this year I'm now at six painted models for four models bought... off to a good hobby start...

I needed some word bearer painted up to play Betrayal at Calth, so i painted up some of my CSM...

And my second contemptor too... I still needs some work, quite a bit, but I'm at least happy with the general concept...





I'm going to paint up a few Emperor's Children too, using the CSM squad that my daughter painted purple... this way I can play a 30k hunting party with the three legions...

Wow thats a lot of progress already this year! I think the word bearers dread looks damn cool man, is that one of the daemon prince heads?

It was in a box of bits I got when I bought my basic chaos army from a friend, so I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's from the Defiler...

And yes, it is a lot of progress, I'm on a roll of motivation and time to execute, so I dive... I'll have to do a group shot of all I have painted so far this year soon, as soon as I'm done with my two rhinos and my drop pod...

Basically I decided that I'd go play at my local GW from time to time this year instead of other forms of procrastination, and since I've also decided to not play unpainted minis, I'm painting the basics so I can play...

My 1500 pts of painted Alpha Legion, ready for a game against a 40k Astra Militarum list...



Happy to report that I won the first game with them... My contemptor managed to take out a Leman Russ Demolisher before he was himself brought down in the crossfire between a Punisher and an Eradicator... Against a tank army I need more meltas and las cannons, but luckily I have a squad of lascannons on my painting desk...



The terminators were footslogging along, and so had to endure a lot of incoming fire before managing to achieve something... They managed to hold on to an objective until turn 6, but unfortunately there was a turn 7, and a bunch of tanks shooting on them... The drop-podded dreadnought is certainly a very good distraction element...

Big update, since it's been very long... it's also been a very quiet few months, hobby-wise...

I've gotten back to my Deathwatch, after a few months on concentrating on my 30k armies...

So hammer dudes...



(I know, these weapons are overcosted and not very effective, but I just get a chuckle at the thought of dropping a full squad of hammer-wielding vets from a Corvus and wrecking something big with it....)

My jump pack captain...



I've even decided to be modern about it and built a bunch of Primarii...



My Alpha Legion was not left behind, I've added Armillys Dynat to the lineup:



And there is a full tactical squad in my painting queue, waiting for decals and basing, as well as a Primus medicae of my own devising...

There is also this monster:



Which will get the full hairspray weathering treatment, which I have to test first on something less critical like a milk bottle or one of my son's battlewagons...

I've also decided to finally start building the Raging heroes sisters of battle that I've had for at least a year. They are going to be quite a challenge to paint, and I'll need to get a steadier hand that I have now to get them done...











I still have loads of things to build, but with those two squads I at least have something to but in the two immolators that I have (I also have a squad of GW Repentia that will be part of this army that have a spot in one of the tanks...) so all I need now is to get painting...

So far so good, this year... I've built more than I have bought, I have painted more than I have bought, but I have build more than I have painted, do the number of little grey people hanging out in my cabinets have been increasing... I have a lot of half-finished things that are going to get finished in the coming weeks, so I should be getting the ratio back to a more reasonable level soon...

And so the painting result for this month, not much, but I'm very happy to have done it since it's a full tactical squad of Alpha Legionnaires, plus a few extras...





Between the Deathwatch and the Alpha Legion I'm getting a bit bored with Power Armour, I guess I'm going to paint something else for the next wave... I have a "antique" Goblin Blood Bowl team that needs some love, that sounds like fun...

I like the hybrid plastic and old school metal terminator.

Thanks! I quite like them too!... I have five more to build, and then I have to get around to paint them... but they are far down the list of things to paint, however...

Today is Blood Bowl day, here...

I built by Dwarf team, and with the extra pieces I updated good old Barik Farblast with a beard more in line with the new dwarves...



And with the extra pieces I might have had some interesting ideas...

Here is Skjegg Longbeard, a Space Wolf veteran who is part of the latest killteam to reinforce my Deathwatch army...

I have been carrying these guys in the same little blue plastic box for at least 25 years. Now it is time that they get the coat of paint that they deserve. I still have to find the best basing for the team, but now at least the basic painting is done...

And the knight fever has struck!

I'm now the owner of a Paladin who will get painted in house Malinax Livery...

I got out my current full armies for some army pictures, and I'm very happy with the result...

Meaning that I'm very happy with the fact that my Alpha Legion force is getting painted and is in the process of getting slowly completed...

As long as I had the table set up for army photos, I decided to get the Inquisiton boys out too.

Here is my Grey Knights / Deathwatch army as it stands now. As you see, still a lot of things to be painted, but there is some progress... I still have the bits needed to assemble an extra Deathwatch kill team, and then there are the battle sisters to add to the whole inquisition theme...



And yes, for those of you with a keen eye, there is in the middle of that a full kill team kitted out with heavy thunder hammers... And yes, I know it's a silly idea...

The gun of the Paladin was magnetized so it can be an Errant too, and some paint has been put to plastic... It even aquired its first Malinax decal...



This is such a fun model to paint, I find...

Ah, slowly getting there... the legs assembly is nearly complete, the armor plates have been glued on and some transfers applied...



There is still a lot of work to be done, the two weapon arms are not even at basecoat level yet...

Legs need some weathering, base needs to be done, body needs to be detailed, carapace needs details and decals...

I am still thouroughly enjoying this little project...

Great shot of the alpha legion altogether. I remember seeing your alpharius ages ago, great conversion. Will you be picking up the forge world alpharius at some point?

I'm not planning to for now, in fact I'm not really planning on getting anything new for my Alpha Legion Force until i've finished painting it and have played with it a few games... (well, apart from another knight or armigers to complete my allied detatchment...). I'm currently in a 'building and painting" phase, and I'm trying to limit further aquisitions that would add to the big pile of unpainted miniatures...

For now I'm happy to say that I'm done with my knight and that I'm quite satisfied with the result... It is being dropped off today for a painting competition at my local GW shop...

My knight didn't win the painting competition, but I'm still very proud of it...

I've decided to move on to another 'big' project (I have a few other in reserve after that, not the least of which is my son's Stompa...
But for now It's my Avatar of Shaah, the big miniature from Raging Heroes, that is on my painting desk...





I'm trying my hand at wet blending for this one, it will take quite a bit more time than what I usually do, but I'm quite looking forward to the final result!

Nice job on the knight. Also looking forward to seeing how you get on with the Avatar, should be a good one for blending practice.
