I meant to post this a while back.
Basically its a thread for us Dakka gamers to recommend or hate upon old / new / potential / missed releases!

I wanted to start with the ArmA series. I absolutely loved (read: was obsessed with Operation Flashpoint). I did pick up Arma 1 but thought it was ultra clunky and trying waaaaay too hard.

Would anyone recommend Arma2/3 or expansions?

Feel free to answer and post other SIB games as you like

This is a great idea!

Re: Arma2/3

The difficulty hasn't changed, ArmA2 has gotten MASSIVE support from both playerbase/modbase and the developers over the years (seriously, some of the mods for ArmA2 are INSANELY well done), whereas ArmA3 suffers from a variety of issues that have yet to be resolved - and the playerbase reception has been a pretty big 'meh'. So, I say yes to ArmA2 and see how that feels (It's the cheaper choice too).

Edit: My SIB

Rainbow Six Siege. I lived off of the old Rainbow Six games back in the day, so when this one was announced I squeal in joy. But a lot of the gameplay I've seen makes it look like Call of Duty: Inside a House.

Rainbow Six siege is a good addition to the series, although I have not purchased it due to the lack of a campagin. But my signifikant other enjoyed it, and yes it dose seen like CoD at times but that is mere looks. The gatmeplay looks to be solid and built around taktisk and acctual teamwork

The ship AI works fairly well. You can tailor engagement ranges and attack attitudes (favouring broadsides for example) and allow ships to seek their own targets, most skills can also be set to auto. Direct damage skills like torps are manually activated but they need to be.You can also 'pause' the game at any time.

In short its not really micro heavy unless you want it to be.

Gothic hasn't been released yet though. The current beta version has 3 tutorial missions (the last is impossible to beat) and a single player skirmish game although it does have fleet and character progression up to Battleships.

I bought this game yesterday, and from what I've experienced it's far from Call of Duty! You need to be really careful in approaching your objectives, and teamwork is very important. You die real easy as well!

One I've been wondering about for a while: Dungeons of Dredmore. Not sold on the art style, but I've heard it's pretty fun otherwise. It's not pricy either, but I'm still not sure.

Rainbow Six Siege is rather fun. Like its been mentioned, it's a very strategic game, and you can't go and lone wolf it like in CoD or anything.

My SIB:

Fable (any of them, really) From what my friends have said, there's a lot of little things you can do in it, which would be nice for when I want a game to screw around with. From what I've seen of another thread talking about it, it's a very hit or miss game, with some who despise it and others who appreciate some of the charm it has.

Thats my fear too Eldrain. I've read some reviews and some gameplay and it looks cool but can you slow/pause it at all or is it fully realtime? What if you get in a real bind, is it a case of sucking it and learning from the error?

I've been looking at Dying Light since a friend has it but isnt saying much about it. Anyone played it?

There is a (very) slow time function, called the Tactical Cogitator, which you can activate whenever you want for however long you want.

Yeah the first one is more than worth playing make sure you get a version with the lost chapters included though. The first games combat is a bit basic compared to the later games but the plot and characters are easily the best on the series.

DoD also gets a "no" from me. It's just boring honestly. Enemy variety is very low, the puns are not (imho) funny. It may seem that there is a lot of skills here but I feel as if the game locks in content if you did not pick a certain skill.

Very good.

The first has aged quite badly but is still reasonable. The second is a consolised version of an open world game (so essentially on rails) but it is still one of the better big budget RPGs of the last few years.

The third is excellent.

Apparently Steam is offering the game Starpoint Gemini 2 at 80% off, so the full package with the game and all three DLC's is only like 8 or 9 bucks right now. I'm curious if anyone has played the game and likes it. Looking at the previews and everything it seems a lot like a more high-tech version of a game I used to play all the time back in the day, Escape Velocity.

I've played it. If you like zombie survival games, you'll probably like it. It has the best movement system i've seen in a game to date - very few 'invisible' walls, most everything can be climbed on, you get a grappling hook later in the game that turns the game into a bit of a batman simulator. It has heights and climbing, and the heights are very well represented. Standard variety of zombies. Day/night cycle with corresponding difficulty levels. Multiplayer is fun (haven't really played it single player, find it boring that way). Lots of skill trees, which depending on difficulty level can make all the difference in survival. Lots of go-fetch quests and achievement quests (which i find a bit dull) but the campaign missions are interesting. Had a few: 'and then gak happened' moments which were entertaining, some of it random some of it quest-driven. I will say this though, we call it soccer hooligan simulator 2016 - Most of the game involves brutally clubbing infected to death with lead pipes, or knocking them to the ground and clubbing/kicking them to death. I guess that's to be expected in a zombie game, but it can get a bit disturbing at first (especially when you meet the runner zombies that'll say things like: no! please! as you brutally club them with your pipe). I guess i'm saying that the combat system is fairly realistic and well done, but otoh soccer hooligan simulator 2016. Overall i enjoyed it.

I have to disagree. I enjoy Civ 5 and Beyond Earth. They are somewhat different than previous Civ games, but I don't think they are bad by any means. I do feel like they play slower, especially when there is a lot of combat, since units usually do not kill each other in one turn unless they are massively stronger.

I played it on the Xbone. I do like it, and there's modifiers to XP and resource gathering to make it easier/harder as well, so it's less of a grind. There's quite a bit to do, and a lot of tech to progress through. As with many things, it'd be better with a friend or two, but single player can be fun as well.

If you were a fan of Just Cause 2, don't buy number 3, because it's really really changed for the worse. I would personally not buy this game, based on an inflated difficulty level, really non-existent health indicators and physics that are even more dodgy than just cause 2. The missions are fun, but confusing sometimes.

Just Cause 3: Still has some stuttering issues making people crazy... the game appears quite good but the little hangs are bordering on unplayable: wait, it needs some fixing. Even more important to wait if you do not use Nvidea cards.

StarCraft 2: Very polished game, many play it for the constantly being tweaked for balance PVP games. The stories on single player are worth it in themselves. WOL and HOTS are both worth getting but I would buy them in order one at a time. You are OK with real time frantic mouse clicking right?

SIB:
Stardew Valley: Just not sure... the chunky graphics and a farm(ish) community living an alternate life type RPG. It may be zen enough to try. As long as it is not a "Farmville".
No Man's Sky: Like a first person "Starbound"?

Its typical Blizzard. Flashy but not really what I was hoping for.

I have only played WoL (I have HotS but I never got very far in it) and its typical Blizzard storytelling with some reasonable mission design.

Basically if you can get it cheap its worth buying.

From what I've seen of No Man's Sky, it does look impressive. Especially if it matches the claim of being able to go to every star system you see in the night. To me, it's StarMade, but without such a heavy basis off of minecraft.

Fates is good, but it depends on what you want. Birthright is the easier one by FAR, conquest is hardest assuming you don't use any of the dlc to farm exp or items or gold, and Revelations is in between, but has the advantage of giving you everything you'd get in either game (in terms of characters iirc). Storywise, birthright is happy, conquest is sad, Revelations is... I dunno, the "true" ending I think? More spoiler ed below

Spoiler:
birthright is about fighting an invading nation, conquest is about working to change a corrupt nation from within, while being giving suicide missions by your adopted/kidnapper father, and Revelations reveals more about the true evil behind the mask you fight in either iirc

DLC is kinda hit or miss, the bundle is worth it imo, it's got a minor nod/prologue to awakening, 2 new classes (witch and ballista make a comeback), a gold, exp, and item farm map for free iirc, some challenge maps (pick a royal minus corrin, use them and their retainers to beat everyone else, and get a stat boost item iirc, or things along that nature).

Also gone is the weapon durability feature fyi if you liked or hated that.

If you want another good trip game in the RPG genre for 3DS, pick up bravely second. loved it, almost at the end after ~30 hrs (even if I hate nintendo locking digital downloads to each 3ds, unless you make a NNID, and go through the email process to get it swapped over if your old DS happens to break...)

And if you happen to have a vita, the newish digimon cyber sleuth was a lot of fun too.

I was wondering if anyone had played Diablo 3 on Xbox One, It looks like something I'd be interested in, but all the reviews I've found tend to be ranting about how it's not as good as the first one, and it's been dumbed down for filthy casuals.

Being a filthy casual myself, and having not played the earlier ones, that's not much help to me!

As far as I can tell, you can play solo, and don't need Xbox Gold live membership unless you want to play online (which I don't)
I would like to get a few pointers about what the gameplay is like, if anyone can oblige?

Its mindboggeling simple. The gameplay requiers very litle in the way of tactics unless you play one of the fragile classes, like Demon hunter or Witch doctor. Besides that its decent for what it is but it no where near the older games of the series. Both combat wise and general look and feel wise I think at least

Odd I did too.
I did come back to play it further and had a better time of it both in fun and depth (many updates with the enhanced edition fixed a few things for me).

DDOS tries to be more cutesy, clever, funny... lighter in tone even with some pretty terrible things going on.
I think if you want a more casual feel to a game this is it.
It seems overly concerned with your view or ethics of a given situation as a side development story (reminds me of Ultima 4 quest for the avatar in that regard).
The pacing and methods of reward seem reasonable.
It appears a bit more "zoomed in" I keep feeling up-close tanks have the advantage here.
Oh! the environmental combinations I must admit are awesome!
Combining water with say lightening or cold or oil then fire or poison gas and fire is just majestic when a plan comes together.
I have not considered environmental conditions and spell combinations quite so much as this game... I feel better for it.
The "home base" is something that expands as you progress to give you perks in various ways that are helpful.
It lacks the customization feel of POE for the base.

POE is a bit more serious, the puzzles are a bit more involved, it has some really nasty moments... it seems more riveting in it's depth.
I played pretty much every "gold box series" game out there and this game has preserved and improved some stories and fixed a painful interface.
It does not offer anything terribly new, it just presents it VERY well and I do love this game.
The base building and that side mission of going into the pit/mine/dungeon was a great idea if you are only in the mood for a "classic" dungeon crawl from time to time.

Neither game seems to have characters as insanely characterful as Minsc and his companion Boo the miniature giant space hamster but their stories are interesting all the same.

Loved the series too. Was tempted but for 40 quid I passed.
Afaik its just gfx/engine updates which dont add anything really to the gameplay.

Yes, I'd say it was worth it. Though I admit, I got it for free on PC because I had all of the DLC and the main game. But it is still worth paying for.

Nope.

Its Civ 5 but with aliens. I played it for 1 game (with the expansion installed) and I have no interest to play it again.

Civ games just aren't what they used to be.

Agree. It's essentially a re-skinned Civ 5, very limited replay value I found.

I have been playing it since 10/28. The trouble is, my eyes are already "adjusted" to FO4. So Skyrim SE looks like a game from 2011 that someone sort of modded to look kind of like FO4, sorta.

KF2 is a lot like KF1, but a little more consolized in my opinion (i.e. there's a lot more weapon spread in general), but overall is a massive improvement, even with the addition of MTs/CS:GO style of skins. Classes are much smoother to level up as, and the art/animations/sound/etc overall is great. If you played KF1, and liked it, you'd probably like KF2. If you like horde mode games, you'll like KF2.

I loved it. But I'm a sucker for stealth games. You can play it a bit more aggressively, but to me, at higher difficulties, its clear that stealth is the main way to go. Like Deus Ex: Human Evolution.

Dishonoured is a great game. While is does do the stealth game very well, you can totally build your character to be a choppy ninja. You really have to hit and run though, you can't just tank your way through the game.

The game reallly changes in the later levels, depending how you play. If you go on an over the top murder spree early on, the games big baddies are acting very differently by the time you get to the end.

It's a very good game with lots of variation in game play (considering it's not a sandbox game)

Shadows of mordor was a pretty good game, as was mad max. Both have combat in the same style as the batman games, and mad max is probably the first movie game that ISN'T complete garbage. However, I think shadow is better than mad max. As for president sequel, it's funny, but I didn't like it as much. If you're hungering for more BL2, grab presequel, otherwise shadows and mad max are both pretty good games.

Edit: if you JUST started BL2, and have someone to play it with who isn't burnt out on it, grab that. It's a fantastic game (even if the higher difficulty levels are just larger bullet sponges for the most part), and the DLC is even better Imo.

The more people you kill the darker the gameworld becomes and the ending is different. You can slaughter your way through the entire game or you can ghost your way through and never kill anyone, although the former is significantly easier.

Dishonoured 2 makes the stealth game a lot easier thanks to the addition of more non lethal takedowns and equipment.

I recommend waiting for it to go on sale.

I'm pretty deep into it and its become boring to me. It has some interesting concepts, but I think I'm 2/3rds into it and with the path I've chosen, I'm only facing off against 2 different kinds of enemies. The story is awesome, as are some of the NPCs that join you, but after about 3 minutes of dialogue you know everything there is about them, barring the loyalty/fear abilities you get from making choices in the game.

It seems like half a game, with the potential to be a great game, but half a game nonetheless.

The Blood and Wine DLC is worth it alone. It's a huge new map. A few years ago that would have been a game by itself.

It' set in a classic medieval France-alike, with knights and witches and all that jazz. It's colourful and bright, which is a nice change of pace from the dour and rainy Scotland/Ireland-alike setting of the main game.

I'm seriously toying with buying Space Hulk: Deathwing. My concern is that my PC may not be up to the challenge. I've got a pretty good CPU, but my GPU is what I'm concerned about. I didn't see confirmed recommended system requirements, but the minimum requirements said 8GB of RAM (which I have) and for graphics, several different cards including a Geforce GTX 660. I have a Geforce GT 730 in my PC. After doing a bit of research, the 660 is definitely more powerful than the 730, but not by a huge margin. My question is, would my computer and graphics card be able to handle the game? Hopefully someone who knows more than I do about computers can answer this.

You might be able to run it, but I'd hold off currently and wait a few weeks and see what kind of tech problems (and gameplay problems) it has, just gonna repost what I wrote in a different thread:

 Wolfblade wrote:
-So my thoughts having played both the CBT and the open beta, I'm disappointed so far. At first, we were told the MOBA style of leveling (levels reset after the match) was temporary, and there'd be a perma level system (this was then revealed to be single player only). Then, they said they were changing it to a per session thing because it "incentivizes farming and leveling up during the game" and "everyone starts out even at the start of the game." Note, exp is NOT shared unless you tag the enemy with at least one hit of any kind. An example of a problem with that is the Apothecary has no self heal until level 3, and healing gives no EXP and of course it's NOT HOW THAT WORKS. Chapters don't go "oh! you killed 20 genestealers, NOW THE 1ST COMPANY VETERAN HAS ACCESS TO A PLASMA CANNON/THUNDER HAMMER AND STORM SHIELD, go find an armory and grab it!"

-Also, heavy flamer is not gonna be in the initial release because "it's OP and caused performance problems." Performance problems is a legit excuse, but I don't believe it being OP as much of a problem.
-Crashes are still fairly common, as are performance problems, which is worrying as the game is only ~2 weeks from release.
-Recoil is insane considering everything we "know" about Terminator armor through the various RPGs/games. (aka, it's not consistent with 40k's "realism"/world)
-Terminator armor is about as durable as flak. Auto guns MURDER terminators better than the genestealers, Keep in mind carapace armor is supposed to ignore autoguns, let alone power or terminator armor.
-Ammo is unlimited. I understand from a gameplay perspective why, but it still bugs me, and means there is no reason to not have a heavy terminator with an assault cannon over a tactical marine with a storm bolter.
-Special ammo is not a thing, rather certain weapons are locked away until you hit a certain level, and they function differently (i.e. apoth gets a storm bolter with metal storm rounds)
-No AI director. Everything in the beta so far is scripted, with the same spawns, and generally the same paths taken by enemies. This is worrisome mostly because if everything is preset and the same every time you play a level, replayability is way down.

Overall, it's fun, but being this close to release is pretty worrying imo.

(Obviously everything there is from the OBT not the CBT)

This is fairly close to this thread's purpose, but I am torn 3 ways on my next gaming buy. I just finished Andromeda (and quite liked it, actually) and now I am down to three choices:

Persona 5 (never played a Persona game before, but this game really appeals)

Dark Souls 3, final DLC (cheap buy, for sure)

Find a Switch and get Breath of the Wild (hardest for sure)

Very good.

The first has aged quite badly but is still reasonable. The second is a consolised version of an open world game (so essentially on rails) but it is still one of the better big budget RPGs of the last few years.

The third is excellent.

One thing I'd mention. Use a guide for the main quest of chapter 2 (the investigation with the private eye) of the first game and stick to it rigidly. It is possible to break the questline if you do certain events out of order and if that happens you cannot proceed.

Its going on Steam for 20 quid (down from 70). I love the look of it but reviews seem a bit mixed. It seems like a powerful engine but little to know instructions/support in-house to get into the juicier bits.

Stardew Valley - I already have this for PC, but a portable version is amazing

Skyrim - Also already have this, but unsure if it would be great portable. Reviews are solid, though.

Mario Odyssey - Haven't played a Mario game since the DS era, hear a lot of good about this.

Both are pretty radically different games. It comes down to an action RPG brawler vs a monster hunter game. Personally, I'd say MHW, but I haven't played Nier.
