Since the forum reorg turned this into a Kings of War only board, and the combined Mantic paint thread that catered for KoW stuff has been moved to the Misc games board, I figured I'd restart it here with my newest from the last thread

Ogre Captain on 'chariot', which is a DeeZee woolly rhino, with a magnetised arm to switch between shield and crossbow

And here's the rest of the army that's been completed to date

Post away! Paint away!

May as well show off mine.

Since this I have added a few things like a cool asian dragon and some phoenix but the basis of the army is here.

Spoiler:

Was incredibly cheap to do,only took a few weeks to paint up and build. Used as basileans they absolutely kick ass.

That's a great looking pair of armies. The Japanese are amazing. Are they the WGF models?

What are the large reaper models in the Ogre army used as? Giants?

I agree, those Japanese minis are really cool

Yep, those Reaper Hill Giants are being used as Giants, and to me it was good fortune that their clothes and shoulder pauldrons really matched up visually with the Mantic Ogres. I certainly didn't buy them in the KS with that in mind!

Wow! I'm just starting my Ogres army using old GW Minotaurs. I love the scenic quality of the assembled armies and how we can use slightly less minis to make the units thus freeing up the base for decoration. Coming from 40k for eleven years that's very refreshing from a hobby aspect.

A very clever unit of goblins, NT. Looks like the sneaky gobboes have had a touch of Dutch courage before the fight?

Thanks Azazelx, I'm still working on getting the rest of the miniatures finished and painted, I've got something close to 4,000 points once it's all said and done, and I still have a couple of boxes to assemble, too. Hoping to get some epic looking battles in once it's all put together and painted.

-Robert that's a cool ethereal effect you've got going on, any chance of a quick rundown as to how you got it to work both with the purple and the green?

Upped some ogre regiments into Siegebreaker hordes. You may argue that there aren't enough ogres. You cannot argue that they don't have a big shield.

Can you tell which unit has the amulet of thorns?

I'm hugely impressed you've got such nice looking red goblin units out of the mantic goblin archers. I've got some of those and they are really awful minis.

Got me a few plastic dinosaurs at Wingham wildlife park over the weekend. I'll be adding my old skink handlers and making a counts-as Rhinosaur Ancients horde with them. Because stampeding dinosaurs.

Thanks! I'm not a great painter, but I think the secret with those Goblins is:

  • Don't go looking for detail that isn't there

  • Pick a few good, contrasting block colours

  • Make liberal use of washes to grab what detail there is

  • Have a good multibase theme

  • Then let the mass of them together at tabletop distance, and the story the base theme tells, fill in the gaps in your visual experience

My Abyssal Dwarfs, they took a day to paint (extensive use of directional spray painting). The bases took a little longer .

The golems were sprayed red all over, then metallic black from a distance from the front / back and then bronze straight down. All golems were painted very, very quickly .

The gargoyles were sprayed black all over, grey from a distance from frost / back and then a very light spray of white straight down, they were finished with a purple wash on the wings and a purple dot for each eye.

The only stuff painted properly were the halfbreeds, werewolves(allies from v1 kow), and the 2 heroes.

Sorry for late reply. Very simple - white undercoat, wash with green or purple, gloss varnish! Base. The darker purple guys were black undercoat, white dry brush, purple wash, gloss varnish. Quick and easy, and I like how they have come out.

These aren't Mantic models, and I debated whether or not I should post these pics here as I usually post them elsewhere, but since this army was literally raised, bought and painted for use in KoW - and everyone else has non-Mantic minis all over the place, I'm showing off my Gondor (Kingdom of Men) army so far.

This is essentially a "State of the Army" post, showing off all of the completed elements of my Gondor Army at present, which I've been properly working on over the last two or so years, with a bigger focus during the last 6 months and the painting challenge that I keep harping on about. Models that aren't yet completed are missing from the photos, so things like the Cavalry units that are part-painted will have to wait for an update down the line. While I don't intend to buy any more Gondor models, with the possible exception of any new heroes that GW might release or the odd figure to "clean up" and finalise a more difficult unit (Men at Arms of Dol Amroth, Warriors of Arnor etc) I've got all of the models for this army in my possession. I just need to paint them!

The army is set up as a Kings of War force, but obviously can be used in LotR SBG, or with a few tweaks in War of the Ring (those bloody bases!) We've even used a small number of them in SAGA. Most Minas Tirith/Gondor models generally aren't very exciting at all as individuals, even with a decent amount of work put into them, but they do have a nice effect ranked up en masse.

I'm not up for a lot of typing right now, so I think I'll go with more of a "show, don't tell" for the rest of this post.

Yeah the DeeZee woolly rhinos fit very nicely on the 50x100 chariot base, as does the Acheson Creations mammoth. I also have a DeeZee mammoth, and Acheson Brontotherium, Paraceratherium, and Deinotherium that fit just nicely too.

I like your weapon swaps! Blue Ogres with snow bases could make a good themed allies army with the evetual northern alliance force too

Thanks! Maybe you recognize most weapons pieces from WHFB Orcs & Goblins! And of course, the Night Goblin Fanatic's ball and chain!
By the way NT do you think the chariot would also fit on the 50x100 base behind the rhino, if I put it in place of the 2 boars, or does the rhino take up too much space?

Show off your painted Kings of War & Vanguard minis! @ 2016/07/20 22:36:37

    Post by: NTRabbit

The rhinos are 65mm from front foot to rear foot, and that leaves about 17mm of rhino head and horn overhanging the front on the straight one, less on the turned head one.

You could certainly fit some kind of chariot behind it, in a tight fit, but not the Mantic chariot. Definitely check all the laser cut MDF places for carts, buggies and such if you want to stick with it.

My leaders et to ride the big animals, but for my regular chariots I'm planning to replace the boars with smaller prehistoric animals from Acheson - I have 2 each of the Steppes Bison, Daedon, and Aurochs, planning to make one animal to a chariot, and as soon as I get some reliable measurements, probably the Japanese style ox or hand carts from 4Ground.

Acheson makes two different Rhinos, Coelodonta and Elasmotherium, which are priced the same as the Bison/Aurochs/Daedon, but I can't vouch for their size.

I was looking at those right now actually. Thanks! The Brontotherium is not bad either, although i still would prefer something with fur.

Show off your painted Kings of War & Vanguard minis! @ 2016/07/21 06:33:37

    Post by: NTRabbit

Brontotherium is big by the way - it still fits on the chariot base lengthwise, but it's twice the width of the woolly rhinos, and a good 15mm or so taller. It's got real presence, and I plan for it to be my Warlord's ride, as opposed to the captain on the smaller rhino.

I can take a bunch of side by side for scale photos with all my prehistoric animals if you want?

If it's not too much trouble, it would be very helpful, thanks! I couldn't easily make out the relative size of the animals and Ogres, and that's what's kept me from ordering something before.

Sticking them in a spoiler cause they're mostly not painted (also big images ) DZ for DeeZee, everything else Acheson

Left to right: Paraceratherium, Deinotherium, Mammoth #1, Mammoth bellowing (DZ), Brontotherium, Woolly Rhino trotting (DZ), Woolly Rhino charging (DZ), Aurochs, Steppe Bison, Daedon, Ogre Standard Bearer

    Spoiler:

Also, in case that sort of thing bothers you, it was pointed out to me elsewhere that the Acheson Paraceratherium is based on an image now considered ahistorical, as more recent studies of the minuscule amount of fossil discoveries have produced a creature looking more like a giant Tapir than a giant long necked Camel.

Np! Acheson has a wealth of really nicely done animal sculpts, for those leaning away from more fantastical creatures in a given army, and DeeZee has some good ones too.

Yep, Paraceratherium is going to be an ogre army standard bearer on chariot, and Deinotherium is going to be a mammoth armed with a ballista. The DeeZee mammoth, I dunno, maybe another normal? I added it to my ebay order without a real reason.

This is my second “State of the Army” post, this time showing off all of the completed elements of my (Marouda’s) Undead Army at present. Like the Gondor army, I’ve been working on it on and off over the last two or so years, with a recent push during the last 6 months and the painting challenge. I’ve kept Undead on as one of my main options for the second half of 2016, though I’ve opened up my options quite a bit as painting mostly Gondor and Undead got very old by the end. The Undead aren’t so bad though, as there’s actually quite a lot of variety in there, especially when you combine “Vampire Counts”, “Tomb Kings” and even the spectral elements of Lord of the Rings in general and Mordor specifically.

These photographs were taken during the same session as the Gondor Army showcase photos, so there has been a little more movement on these undead since then, specifically the unit base I put together for the trio of Nazgûl. I've also gotten a couple more swarms done (but not yet varnished and photographed.)

The Barrow-Wights in the front row need to have a new unit base built for them as Mantic first Squatted them in KoWII before a protest from players (and with myself as one of the first, if not the first in the departed Beta forums) caused them to be reinstated, though now they’re “Large Infantry” with 40mm bases. I’m not going to rebase my LotR SBG figures, so I’ll be making a – hopefully slightly interesting and imposing – multibase for them. My first failed attempt already sits abandoned on my painting desk.

I've been busy painting terrain, so it's been a while (also forgive the extra pomp and pageantry, it's entry requirements for a monthly competition); I turned this

    Spoiler:
    (big image)

1 Paraceratherium by Acheson Creations (28mm)
3 Goblins and 1 Ogre by Mantic (28mm)
    3 crates, 2 barrels, 2 platforms, and a chest by 3T Studios (28mm)
1 Hay Cart, 1 Turnip Cart, and 2 Scorpions by Warbases (28mm)
Muslin, a leftover plastic gubbin from Ikea, some oak dowel, some twine, some skewers, and a bit of paddle pop stick

    into this

Claiming the challenge for my custom scratchbuilt Ogre Army Standard Bearer on Chariot for Kings of War, made from all the different bits in the OP

    Also claiming backstory

A creature seldom seen in the young kingdoms, the Great Rhino is perfectly adapted for life on the Mammoth Steppe. Their long necks allow them to reach the juiciest leaves at the tops of the tallest trees, and spot approaching predators from afar; their long legs allow them to easily walk over the tall grass, moving between the island-like woods that dot the steppes with less effort than a shorter creature forced to push through the dense grass, with the added bonus of not leaving a trench of crushed grass for predators to follow. The Ogres have long recognised the gifts of this creature - the Strider of the Grass Sea in their tongue - and senior Ogres, with their long serving (and surviving) Red Goblin retinue, will utilise them to carry loot and pay back into the Steppe with a strength and speed no wagons can match. When the entire clan is called to war, this otherwise gentle beast often finds a use as well - carrying the largest of the army standards and signals, at a majestic height visible to the entire clan

Backstory needs about 5 rewrites and 3 editors, but that's what I get for leaving it until the last second

Slow painter and assembly-line painting the parts then assembling after painting.

Models are from the Mantic Orcs Army set, and paints from the Army Painter Greenskins Paint Set.

I wonder how well the upcoming Mantic Terrain Crate will work as basing and other material!

JoshInJapan and ced1106 - I don't suppose you have got any of the goblin sharpsticks in your collection?

I bought some of them ages ago when they were first released and they will a real pain to clean up and construct, quite poor casting. I did hear they had some problems with them. I wondered if you had bought some recent ones, and if the later ones have improved at all?

I have about 20 in metal, and another 40 or so in plastic-- I have 20 of each finished. I didn't find them particularly odious, but I can see where all the complaints come from.

I think the detail on the first runs were messed up somehow and that newer runs are a lot better in that regard.

There are some problems with the design and proportions of the goblins themselves though, which demand some cutting and repositioning to really make the best out of the models.

This is a good video that show off the pros and cons of the mantic gobbis: https://youtu.be/2hDhIOD4Q2U

Slight dilemma, as my camera pics were while the white glue on the base was still wet (was on a competition deadline), and my phone pics of today are washed out because the lights were too bright. You're going to have to picture these with dry glue.

The scouts are Hasslefree multipart goblins on Stonehaven raptors. I painted the raptors to look like the Rainbow Lorikeets I see in the garden and out walking The Warlord on Chariot is regular Mantic, with weapons pieced together from the blades and handles of a bunch of regular 2 handed warrior weapons (plus a Reaper sword blade and a bit of skewer), and the mount is a Brontotherium from Acheson Creations. Sphinx is Reaper Bones, and unless I find something better it'll be a wind themed Beast of Nature, to go along with the Dragon Turtle (fire), and walking shark Karnedge Gorefathom (water) I've already painted, and the earth themed one coming in bones 4.

I really like your theme and the basing! Colours compliment and contrast each other well. Well done!

For future projects, you might want to invest in a wet pallette as -I think- you can improve your painting even further by keeping your paints a little more moist. (in some cases, your paint appears a little thick, thereby obscuring the details a little)
Thinning down paints really help in allowing for more layers and a more smooth transsition from one colour to another.

But is it really always what you want? if you thin it down you MUST do multiple layers because its not thick enough, thus you need more time (and more time per model = less models)?
I always shied away from the wet-pallette so far because of this (and the effort to get/build one). on the other hand i've heard it so often now already that it helps to improve...

and to arctic dragon for your original post:

    @Schmendrick,

First things first: I'm not that great a painter. I only happen to have learned some tricks to make life easier. So this is not a post how to paint like a champion (since I'm not that good. A mate of mine can do stuff that puts me to shame...) but more of a how-to-make life easier!

    On your question:
I've never had the problem with paint not being thick enough, this is due to the fact that highlights are always the same colour as the original -only a few shades lighter-.
a wet pallette is also not really needed. The trick is to keep the brush wet between applications of paint and add a bit of water before starting to paint.

Let's thake this horseman's saddlecloth as an example:

    https://imgur.com/a/J6ssHvd

The base colour is plague brown. https://www.sceneryworkshop.nl/game-color-plague-brown-17ml-72039.html
then I used a brown ink to shade it. https://www.sceneryworkshop.nl/game-ink-brown-17ml-72092.html
(This ink I used for the whole horse model, I just thinned it down a bit more on the saddlecloth while wet.)
After that I highlighted it with with moon yellow https://www.sceneryworkshop.nl/game-color-moon-yellow-17ml-72005.html

And yo answer your question: because I thinned down the paint, I had to highlight it twice, but that's only because yellow paint does that.

So it's"base colour, ink, two highlights. In all other colours I only need a single highlight.
That;s not more work than usual? I find the ink wash very good to hide painting mistakes, so I almost need no time to repair the model after my first base layer.

Then a pic of my own:

A horde of skeletons that I recently finished as part of my Army of Darkness formation.

WIP photos of the project (and more pics) here => http://kingsofwarvince.business.blog/2019/02/25/army-of-darkness-2/

But I can remember that when I started, I was already happy if I put one layer of paint on any spot the model and never wanted to touch that place again. painting over one spot 4 times? shading, drybrushing? not that I knew back then what that was, but the mere thought of not being done after one go: unbelievable!

    Cheers!
I must admit that, ever since I completed a battle worthy army, my painting has improved quite a lot as there is no time limit.

I found online a much better tutorial than I am able to write:

    basics

    and the advanced version

    Looking forward to the results!

Lower Abyssals join the Warband. I used one of these last Sunday and he died lime a true Grunf the first time he eas charged lol! It was my first time to use Anyssals and I got real good results from tje Lurker, Succubi, Abyssal Guard and the Flamebearers. My Hellequin got pulled through the portal end of turn 1 and the Hellequin Blood-Masque got beat down by NA Frostfang and a Huscarl. I still managed to get a draw playing Secure the Portal.

Are those abyssal photos coming through sideways for everyone else, or is it just me?

They look great, by the way, though their ability to induce a stiff neck is killin' me!

    Hi guys,
ok, time to start to show off some of my fruits of labour. I will start with 3 gargoyles that I did for my Kings of War: Vanguard Abyssals warband.

Here I experimented with nearly "only washing". Primed Grey (Vallejo), then a bit of Priming in white from the top for light effect (Army Painter), then all army painter washes (except for the belt and loin-cloth).

Time to focus on the Forces of the Abyss Warband. 24 finished, 5 to go.

I've had piles of zombies lying about, and they're always such a pain to assemble into the inevitable giant, tar-pit unit I build with them. So I made a Legion of them:

I think the guidelines say you should use at least half plus one of the required number of minis; A legion is 10 wide, and 6 ranks deep (200mm x 120mm), and I think I used about 35-38 zombies (for this otherwise 60-zombie unit). I think this looks so much better than the mess of 60 models crammed into that tight a space.

How many zombie makes and models can you identify? Here's what I remember using:

    Spoiler:

In order of approximate frequency (most common first):
    Mantic Kings of War zombies
    Games Workshop Warhammer zombies
Reaper Bones zombies (or various undead zombie-like dudes)
    Mantic Walking Dead Zombies
    CMON Zombicide Black Plague Zombies
Wizards of the coast prepained zombie type guys
Gripping Beast Saga Revenants (limited edition zombies, sort of an unofficial faction for that game)
    Wizkids prepainted DnD Pirate zombie
And I think there's even part of a Mantic Kings of War ghoul who made it in...

    Automatically Appended Next Post:
(hmmm... Anyone know how to increase image size a little? Those pics from my dakkadakka gallery are smaller than I intended...)

This most definately true! 28mm mini's on a 20x20 base usually end op far too cramped. Though I cannot zoom in well to your pictures, the general idea looks enough like a mob; 35-38 seems like a decent number. I fully agree that it looks a lot better than 60 models on individual bases.
(Even Warhammer/9th age enthousiasts use unit fillers these days to avoid this mess. )
I, myself, usually stick to PMC from the FAQ (http://www.manticgames.com/SiteData/Root/File/FREE%20RULES/Kings-of-War-Version-1.9.0-Errata-and-FAQ.pdf which is 41+ for a legion (or 7 to a troop, 14 to a regiment) but only because some tournaments require such.

There are lots of cool paint jobs on this page

My most recent completion, the giant, magnetised and pinned for alternate parts, aside from the head which just slots onto a rod. The cloak is a little tight and damages the paint taking it on and off, so won't be using it anymore.

I think Mantic's emphasis on the Forces of Nature this week makes it necessary to show off some of my Forces of Nature models that are already finished.

Lets start with my two Naiads.

My druid is not yet finished, but I will dig out my 3 Shamblers of which I am very proud. The rest of my Forces of Nature forces is unfortunately from a manifacturer whose-name-shan't-be-mentioned.

Imps for Forces of the Abyss. I used them once and I liked their 3 wounds and they did good against an Ice Kin Hunter. Then the Ice Queen fried them with a Lightning Bolt ☹️

I was trying toget a bubbling effect for the lava by putting sand on the base first. Always experimenting.

I have been doing everything on round bases recently so as to have a system-agnostic collection. If/when I ever get around to playing Vanguard, I'll find a way to mark the rear facing and sort of ignore base sizes.

That's really cool! And I don't think diadem will go away ... however if you were hoping to use the Shock Troops elite + vicious for ranged, I wouldn't count on it. 3E specifies whether elite / vicious is ranged or melee, I haven't seen many if any general elite / vicious. Probably reserved for especially nasty big monsters.

Reconquista at Partizan 2020, Christian Vignette II

I've been slowly working on vignettes to spread across the table top and create some interest outside of the units of fighting men for the demo.
The second to be finished is a chap being blessed by his Bishop during the battle. Perhaps he is in need of reinforcement to his mettle? Perhaps he is preparing himself for the very real possibility of death? Perhaps he will just look good on the table top!

Oops. I thought it was Kings of War historical!

That berzerker lord is one of my favorite models in Mantic's dwarf line, and you really did it justice.

Dope! That looks fantastic and very table-worthy!

It's a wee bit hard to tell, but I bet if you hit it with a little bit of wash, it would really look fabulous.

Now i've gotta go find some KoW stuff to photograph!

Long overdue, here's my Undead army. I haven't figured out how many points this is yet for 3rd edition, but it's around or just under 4,000

    The family portrait:

So many commanders, so little time!

Four riders of the Apocalypse (counts as whatever cavalry I'm in the mood to go overboard on. Base size is equivalent to cavalry troop. Skull and Crown Stratagems minis.)

Can a man truly own too many zombies? Hint: this is not all my zombies

Some classic GW chaos warriors, happy to stand in for Revenants or Soul Reavers.

Do the undead even have a giant? How is this not a unit? Anyway, I guess he's just the team mascot.

The undead tend to be slow. So having a few of these in the army is pretty key.

Multibasing is fun - here's a few wraith troops

Woof woof! I don't know what this is, but the model is pretty cool!

I am long done with Warmachine, but true to the theme of the undead, these fellas live on as giant undead infantry in servitude to my Necromancer(s)

Empire of Dust has the Bone Giant if you don't mind changing "nationality".

The undead list also got a Zombie-monster 'Goreblight' that could stand in for a giant.

It's a bit on the small side for that particular model, Height 4 and a Monster rather than Titan class, but it's close enough, at least for non-tournament games and/or regular opponents.

    Greetings.

I re-based and matte sealed my Spectre unit, doing some Butchers tomorrow. Figured I'd bump this thread. We're just getting back into KoW.

Butchers. Re-based over the last scheme, so it's too thick , but at least a bit better.

Nice! The orange pumpkin heads are fun, both as heads and as scenery.
