EVENT FLIER

Had a look through this project thread and want to give Epic Space Marine a go? Live in the UK in proximity of Cardiff?

Come & Play Epic Space Marine Warhammer 30,000

Firestorm Games, Cardiff.

Saturday 11th March 2023 from 12pm

https://sumocatretro.wixsite.com/greatcrusadeepic

Hey guys,

This is going to be a blog where I revisit one of my first loves in wargaming - Epic. I first got into wargaming at the tale end of Rogue Trader and at that time 'Space Marine' (the 2nd edition of GW's 6mm game) was the current hot seller. I got the awesome 3-army starter set from the time, which included Space Marines, Orks and Eldar. Over time the collections of my friends and I increased to the point where, at its peak, we were playing 5-6 player games with getting on for 20,000pts per side(!) To put this in perspective this used to be played on about a 12ft wide playing surface with a dozen or more titans, entire battle companies of Space Marines and clans of Orks and fought over a weekend (so epic, in every sense of the word!) Now, some 25 years later I'll be revisiting this wonderful game, and plotting my progress as I go.

As an aside, to give this project some focus I aim to set it during the Great Crusade or Heresy as there is so much out there now with which to draw inspiration. I'll also use this thread to record inspirations, ideas and of course the important thing of buying the miniatures and resources for rules and playing the game.

So for starters, the wonderful artwork from the cover of the Space Marine boxed game (sadly the best resolution of the image I can find, although I think captures the scale of the game perfectly) and some Pre Heresy World Eaters that I started some time ago, as part of another project.

Thanks for reading, and much more to come shortly!

Going to try to keep an eye on this, have seen a few scratch built epic scale models recently making me think that Spartans and malcador tanks might not be too hard to do
Do you have much in the way of super heavies like Capitol imperialis, leviathans etc? I always liked the idea moving fortresses and can imagine them n the armouries of some of the legions

Yes I know the stuff you mean Radu, some really cool looking scratch builds of true-scale titans and the like. Basically like the crazy-big ones you used to see in some of the artwork (like the one above even). But would love to get my hands on some big war machines..

Another small update, again this one isn't new but thought I would share in this blog. A small diorama that I plan to use as an objective. Broken down because of a nearby artillery hit, or did they push the engines a bit hard?

Even though I know I want to do something 'pre-heresy', I wasn't that sure what legion to cover, or even if I wanted to do marines!
I've got some idea now, but need to do a few test pieces first.

In the meantime, a bit of artwork from the original Horus Heresy rulebook which is pretty inspirational (I used to absolutely love these kinds of dioramas when I first got into the game, and think they still fire the imagination!)

Quite a long gap between this and the last post, but I am actually working on it again as an active project so I thought I should update!

Have got hold of some of the brilliant Vanguard Miniatures 6mm range - 'Nova Elite'. These happen to be ideal to use as Space Marines for Epic! And more importantly they don't cost ridiculous amounts of money (a lot of the old epic stuff now is starting to get quite rare and expensive, and the deals of massive packs of stuff sold by unknowing parents 15 years after their kid has moved out and they're clearing the attic, much less common)

Here are some basic troopers as part of a tactical detatchment. The guys on the front right are a 'support' stand, equipped entirely with special weapons (flamers) that can negate cover.

Also here are some rhinos for them. These are some old GW ones (from the second edition Space Marine) I found that were painted badly (probably 20+ years ago). I found some decals on Bell of Lost Souls for Pre-Heresy world eaters, and the smallest of these fit well onto a Rhino door. They were printed onto white decal paper, and just used some decal softener to help them mould to the plastic shape.

Any comments welcome!

Thanks man - yes you don't see that much!

Although perhaps a bit more now, with rumours of the new Adeptus Titanicus, and the quality proxy miniatures coming from Vanguard and other companies.

Just a small update, some Rapier laser destroyers. These are the classic GW minis - if anyone has any of these spare, please let me know!

Always love seeing more epic as it draws me into painting more of it myself lol.

The vanguard novan stuff is pretty damn good to be fair aswell.
For 30k it gives plenty of options too (jetbikes, javelins, superheavies etc)

I Would highly recommend their version of the mastodon too.
Lovely model that goes together and paints up amazingly.

Thanks a lot, and for the recommendations!

Have to say have been looking through your Epic blog and some absolutely fantastic stuff there. Some incredible work detail with those flames, looks brilliant, and the reviews of the miniatures are really useful (definitely going to be putting an order in for those 'heavy affray' units). Have you got any more work planned for that scale?

Sadly life kind of got in the way for a while but I'll be back to it soon.
Got a few odds and ends to add to my salamanders then I'll be working on a small 30k army after that.

Undecided on the chapter yet but I only want it for display.

Ah OK mate, well hope you can get back to it! Will keep an eye out for your blog for sure.

A small, quick update. As opponents for my World Eaters I'm also working on a collection of Orks. These are some tanks that must be 25 years old or so, my early 90's self had done a pretty enthusiastic but poor job of painting them so they now have a new lick of paint. I'm also working on some infantry to go alongside these so hopefully will have some more posts soon.

My latest update - a completed World Eater tactical detachment with their transports and command squad/legion champion.
I have the option of adding some close support squads (teams of guys with flamers, like the ones you saw in the Horus Heresy art books), so will do that at some point.

Must try and get some better photos as well, the auto-focus really struggles on these little guys!

Any comments very welcome!

I'm making lists for Net Epic Armaggeddon at the moment, using some of the tournament pack rules. Although there is no reason I can't easily switch to the version that's a continuation of the 2nd edition Epic, will probably just wait and see what people want to play.

But the Epic Armaggeddon ones do seem to be the best regarded in terms of the tactics involved with the game, and I think have the larger player community.

Thanks for comments guys! Have to say am really enjoying getting back into Epic. It's quite a strange feeling picking up miniatures that have been in a box for 20+ years and I had started to paint back at that time!

LlamaHead - I think great thing now is that you can play whichever version of rules you like, and it's easy to swap. I did used to love Epic 2nd edition (which I believe NetEpic is the extension of) so am sure I will have a go at that version of the game again at some point.

My latest update is some completed Goff Ork battlewagons for a warband. These are really old miniatures (about 25yrs) - after all of that time sitting unseen in a box they were probably thinking they would never ever see some paint!

It's quite a basic sculpt, looks quite limited compared to the later Epic 40,000 battlewagon miniature, and also suffer with a lot of the 1st/2nd edition Space Marine vehicles in being a bit underscaled. But, I've tried to add enough individual detail, weathering etc. that hopefully they should stand up well with the other ork vehicles.

Any C&C very welcome!

Been a while since I have updated this project, but here are a few more pics.

This is an old Ork Gibbletgrinda (or a Battlefortress now under the current Armaggedon rules)
Bought a pair of them from ebay for a very reasonable price, and for once it was already pretty well painted and didn't need to go straight into a Nitromors bath - just added a bit of darker colouring so it fitted in with the other Goff stuff so it and some weathering.

And a size comparison shot with a gunwagon and rhino - these things are big! You can imagine the Rhino driving straight under that

Hopefully should have a completed Ork warband unit to post soon.
Any C&C greatly appreciated

Great stuff - those ork battlewagons were the first GW miniatures I ever got, back as a teen. you've done a great job with bringing out the small detail, but the world eaters decal doesn't look like much at this scale I'm afraid, sort of some blobs of color.

Thanks for the comment Kestrel - yes I see what you mean about the World Eater logo, it does hide into the blue colour. I might try putting it on the white section or maybe fine-lining it with black to make it stand out.

My latest update is a Goff Ork Warband. This consists of two stands of Nobz, 6 of boyz, 2 of gretchin with their transport. The miniatures are a mix of Vanguard Skinnerz and some of the old plastic Epic Orks for the Nobz and special characters. Think the heavy armour helps disguise the less dynamic pose of the GW minis and helps them fit in a bit.

Any C&C very welcome!

Latest update - Have just received a few of these bad-boys through the post, they'll start as the core elements of an Evil Sunz Kult of Speed. Interesting question - is it only Evil Sunz that ever have groups of speed freaks? How about any of the other Ork Clans? (I can't remember seeing any!)
I'm gradually collecting a group of the old metal GW vehicles for this (Scorchas, Spleenrippas, Gobsmashas) as well as some new Skinnerz warbikers from Vanguard miniatures to use as Warbikes.

Anyway - for these guys will probably use the Dragster as a buggy and the other two as 'Oddboy with Super zzap gun' or 'soopagun' as they are in the Net Epic Armaggeddon rules.

Many thanks for the comment Skinflint Games

I have heard great things about Net Epic Gold (which I believe is the popular version based on the old Space Marine Epic - 2nd edition)

I've been hoping to collect for Epic Armageddon but it's good to know its very easy to switch between systems. And to see just how damned well the community is still going for the game, despite there not being any official GW releases for so many years.

Am just finishing off some Stompas and tin botz (again Goff clan) to hopefully post over the next few days.

Cheers man. That was exactly the same for me, really fond memories of 20+ years ago and massive, 20,000pt armies with dozens of titans on the battlefield. I don't think I've ever really found anything in wargaming in the years in-between to match that. Was really good to find out there is still a community going of dedicated players keeping tournaments and events going, and a number of really cool 3rd party producers out there now. Not to mention Adeptus Titanicus hopefully just around the corner!

A quick update for a Stompa Mob that I'm working on - going to be some of these bigger guys, some Killa Kanz (this is an old tinbot miniature, have found a few of these lying around) and probably some dreadnoughts.

Got a very nice small collection of 2nd hand Orks: Some metal Gobsmashas for my Evil Sunz, some fighta-bomberz and a large Battlefortress vehicle (one that I haven't seen before!)

Got these from someone on an excellent FB group, Epic Space Marine 40k. Totally recommend it as an active community, there is an awful lot going on there

Just painting up some other bits & pieces now so will hopefully have another update soon!

Yes.. all of them is the answer!

Would love to have some representation for all of the Ork clans at some point - just been Goffs so far, but just working on some Bad Moons and collecting enough vehicles for an Evil Sunz kult of speed.

Latest update: Some Goff Gunwagonz. These are from the 3rd edition Epic 40000 release (I think), there are tons of these on eBay usually at a pretty reasonable price. Needed a bit of a repaint, but fortunately the original paint was a pretty thin layer so didn't obstruct the detail too much.

I removed the massive mechanical arms from the one wagon, which for me managed to break the suspense of disbelief (what is that point where it becomes unacceptable? Genetically engineered superwarriors are OK, psychic powers fine, but there was no way in hell that wagon would ever be moving anywhere with those big arms on the front of it!)

These will probably be attached to a Goff Warband as some additional firepower.

Nice haul. You're raking it in right now.

My take on suspension of disbelief- Genetic warriors and psychic powers started in a fantasy realm so that's how we view then. Vehicles are real world and we (at least I) have a tendency to compare the physics of our world to the assumed physics of the 40K universe and frequently see things that could not be possible (usually in Ork vehicles with giant towers full ov gunz an stuff).

Small but perfectly formed - 30K Epic! Come & Play Epic Space Marine - Firestorm Games 11.03.23!! @ 2018/02/26 19:08:58

Post by: Pacific

Yes I think you're right. I suppose it's things that you know about (like the laws of physics) and if those are observable.

Another example of a 'breaker' for me was the King Arthur film (by Guy Ritchie). The suspension of disbelief wasn't broken by the massive, sky-scraper size elephants or wizards on their backs firing fire balls that were disintegrating people instantly. Nope, it was Eric Bana riding his horse off the edge of a ramp so he could jump on one of the elephants, while the horse plummeted to its death below. A special suicide horse that can be ridden like a motorbike? Nope

Anyway! Another quick update with a haul from ebay: A Thunderhawk gunship, original Predators and some very old robots and dreadnoughts. Got all of them for a very generous £10.
The Thunderhawk and Predators will be going in a Nitromors dip (any idea what Marine chapter is yellow and Black? Wasn't it Executioners or something?)
And the side sponsors will be coming off the Predators as they look a bit ridiculous.
A further update with some more painted minis hopefully coming soon!

ROBOTS!!! Man I had forgotten about them. I have 2 of them in 28mm from RT.

That's a wicked score for $13.90 (US exchange) eBay for such things is brutal.

So, about that "painting" thing you were talking about earlier... Just poking fun but concerned that the avalanche of inbound awesome might turn into a daunting task when you start slinging paint.

Hah!

Yes I know what you mean - have got a bunch of stuff on the table and it is difficult to know what to paint next.

Next up, something a bit more boring some Rapier laser destroyers. Managed to get a few of these to build them up to a full unit from a very helpful guy on the Epic Space Marine facebook group - really useful place to get hold of rare miniatures.

I really like the concept of the World Eater legion (as it was during the Great Crusade) being a fully operating army with artillery, heavy weapons etc. and not just a group of screaming lunatics flinging themselves at the enemy. Which doesn't really hold water with the suspense of disbelief thing.

Also got a couple of these - I have no idea where they originate from (vaguely remember a line of small die-cast tanks and planes).
But might use them to represent a Crusade-era Fire Raptor (which from descriptions is a kind of VTOL gunship). What do you think?

It's similarly scaled to one of the old GW Thunderhawk Gunships. I'm hoping as there is an element of abstraction about vehicle/titan scale in Epic that it shouldn't look too out of place?
But I will paint it up in World Eater colours and see how it looks alongside the other formations.

I've finished painting up a Goff Stompa mob. I actually prefer the later mijniature with the tracks rather than legs, but got a pile of these things from the 'Bay (in various stages of decay) for a very cheap price so can't complain!
I'll hopefully add some Killa Kans and maybe even a Super Stompa if I can get hold of the old Mekboy Gargant miniature for a reasonable price.

Any C&C very welcome

A quick update, this one is a medley of miniatures. Some Tinbotz (which are going to be used as Killa Kanz and join the Stompa mob), another Lungbursta gunwagon and a first sample attempt at some Bad Moons. I tried to green-stuck on some hats (as we know, Bad Moons are the richest of ork clans and can afford hats!) Not entirely pleased with how they turned out but will keep trying at it, and hopefully look OK when they are on the tabletop.

Any C&C very welcome!

Tarantulas! Man I forgot about those.

I'm going to have to crack open my Epic set this weekend. This thread really makes me want to push my group to look at this game. They call themselves Grognards but play AoS and the newest 40K with total disregard to almost anything that came before this (only exception so far is a Mordheim campaign in 2015).

Is this any good Malika mate? Have put on Dakka
Spoiler:

I think a Grognard is deemed so by his games, not the length of his beard or the age of the rock band on his t-shirt!

Definitely think it's worth a try if you get the chance. Especially if it's some guys that used to play Epic back in the day, try get a win or two on Ebay on those old clearout auctions where someone is getting rid of the stuff and has just photographed a pile of miniatures. I've managed to get some ridiculous value of stuff doing this (and actually an army by itself) then have a fun session sorting it all out and putting into correct piles! All the army lists and rules are freely available online as well, so depending on which version you want to play you can easily get some army lists printed onto a couple of sheets of A4 to work out what you have there.

Darkjim - Yes this is the plan mate I've just started on a small Kult of Speed first, but will move on to Bad Moons after that (and hopefully a Gargant or two)

b-tone - you know, actually it is so easy to paint 6mm (I think actually much easier than 28mm). A lot of the time it's just a base colour and a wash or drybrush. I think looking at your gallery you would have absolutely no trouble..

Just got hold of some of these lovely little 'tainted elites' that were released as part of a Vanguard Miniatures indie-go-go campaign. Lovely little sculpts. My problem is now I have some new stuff to paint! These ones are obviously going to be 40k (rather than 30) - the question is, what shall I paint them up as?
Rather than going for a traitor founding legion I might opt for a traitor warband - can anyone suggest a good one? Red Corsairs would be the obvious but perhaps one of the lesser known ones? Was thinking perhaps the Soul Drinkers, which might be cool mixing some regular marines in with the traitor ones (to give a more ragtag look) and also attempt an 8-legged marine conversion for Chapter Master Sarpedon!

A very small update as I've got round to painting again.

Back to the World Eaters again, this is the first half of an Assault Cohort. The miniatures are the 6mm range from Vanguard Miniatures. I need to complete another 4 stands including the command.

Have also started work on some terrain, got some very reasonably priced printed plastic terrain (a whole set for around £20, from the 'Bay)

Llamahead - the terrain was from the 'Bay, some guy that was doing 3D prints of both ruins and completed building blocks. They were very basic (I have added the debris to the ruins and had to add plasticard roofs) but very cheap, got probably about a dozen for £20. All sorts as well, there are some more gothic-ruin style buildings that I've yet to complete.

Next update, some more minis finished and a completed army shot, of all of the stuff I have done so far.

Firstly, a World Eater Assault cohort with Thunderhawk transport. The Thunderhawk was one I got very cheaply from Ebay, it was in the Blood Angels legion but has had a Nitromors bath and has now been re-purposed for use by the WE
The assault miniature guys with jet packs are from the Vanguard miniature range.
I know Thunderhawks were less common during the Great Crusade, but there was an old art piece (sadly had a look online and I can't find it) of jump pack marines coming out of an aircraft, and wanted something that used that as inspiration.

And finally a complete army shot! Of all of the work I have done so far for both the World Eaters and Orks.

This is hopefully just the beginning. I'm now working on completing some gangs for a Necromunda campaign I'm running (a few of the guys don't paint so am doing their stuff for them) as well as painting up some minis for the Walking Dead: All out War miniature/board game. Have a lot more ideas in the works for 6mm though so hopefully will post here again before too long!

As always any C&C very welcome

Agreed on the Grognard definition, but I'm having a hard time getting anyone to play a game older than their dog. I did manage to get Mordheim started back up.

What's your opinion on the Adeptus Titanicus teasers? Are they really going to make 6mm relevant again? If yes, I'm going to be happier than a little kid with an ice cream cone.

What about dirty yellow? Kinda akin to this:

Can't wait! The new miniatures look stonking - I've put off re-building and painting my originals because obviously the new ones aren't going to scale that well.
But I love the sound of it being like a skirmish game, with the titans prowling each other through ruins and the like - obviously will withhold judgement until I get to play the game, but even if the rules don't work very well will still have a supply of new titans to use with Epic!

I'm not sure if will help bring 6mm back into the limelight. No doubt there will be some new AT players who want to give full Epic a go and join that community. But, I think a lot of casual players just want something they can get an easy pick-up game with against Joe Stranger, and others who wouldn't consider buying anything that isn't shrink-wrapped. So I'm not sure how much of a knock-on effect it will have community-wise - hopefully I will be proven wrong and it will start an epic renaissance!

Good luck with getting someone to play the game. I'm a firm believer in Epic, think the moment someone sees a game or tries to have a go they will be hooked - the setting just suits the scale perfectly, and the game mechanics are excellent and pretty much sell the game on their own.

Scale creep has bothered me for the last... 28 years? haha

If this comes out and is somehting I'm interested in I'll likelt just reboot my original armies (Imperial / Ork / Chaos) and include some new stuff that doesn't wonk the scale too much.

Judging by their most recent releases I'll be surprised if it isn't another "board game". I've not seen anything about it yet other than that ass-kicking video that made the hair on my arms stand up. I want to be excited about this, but I also wanted to be excited about Shadespire and Necromunda.

Just saw this blog, lovely stuff. Having started in 28mm, I was intimidated to try Epic, but I think the sorts of stories I like best about the 40K universe are absolutely best told in that scale. Shame the minis are a bit hard to track down. I always regretted not getting into the re-release. If something in that scale comes out again, I'll be delighted.

One of the reasons I left 40K behind was the integration of Epic scale stuff into what is the world's most bloated skirmish game. I just don't like how it looks or feels to be doing that outside of special scenarios.

Wonderful Blog, i have a huge collection of Epic starting from the original Adeptus Titanicus plastic Warlord Titans and a Capitol Imperialis crawler...

The flyer you have found I used to own as well, they are known as Mega Force; it was part of a three Flyer set including a Commander and two of the VTOLs you have, and a small plastic launch ramp:

There are plenty of 3rd parties out there who make great proxy models. Another thing you might wanna if you wanna capture the big scale of these battles is playing in 3mm.

I think the latest news is that there might be some new Space Marine things (infantry). However one of the great (and more heartening) pieces of news was that the new AT has been scaled to work with the existing epic ranges. It's nice that GW have been mindful of the existing community with the new Titan releases.

Completely agree. Was a massive fan of 40k up until the big plastic kits of super-heavies, titans and the like started appearing on boards. There is nothing like a pick-up game, your opponent plonking one of those mega-vehicles on the table, then pie-plate templates being placed down that wipe out a couple of squads of marines (that have taken a month to convert & paint) on a 2+. The game was always meant to be about squad to platoon level combat, but has lost its way.

If you're interested in picking up Epic again please take a look at the guide in my signature, which I put together for new players. It's very easy to get the rules, minis from ebay and there are tons of 3rd party proxy minis available now, it's very cheap to get a force up together for the game.

Just a small update. Have been taking a bit of a break from wargaming miniatures to do some plastic kit building, which I've found to be challenging in different ways (although with some transferable skills, will hopefully be able to airbrush minis now without destroying them with 50PSI!)

Have got these guys painted up in the meantime, some of the old plastic ork dreadnoughts, which I've painted up in yellow. These look a little dull, so will try and brighten up any future minis I do for this clan.

Have seen that the new AT stuff has now been released - although am desperately avoiding looking as I know it will mean me shelling out at a time when I already have several other projects on the go!

I think the point you've mentioned there is why it won't get a full reboot - there are just too many lines, at least if it was to be done in any kind of meaningful form. Remember you have pretty much everything from 40k, and then extra stuff which works in 6mm but wouldn't in 28mm. GW already has a packed release schedule and reproducing a full 6mm line would take up a big chunk of that.

Not saying it won't happen and I'd love to be proven wrong, but I think it's that practical obstacle that a lot of people calling for a new version of the game seem to be overlooking.

Just a quick update as I've had a little hobby time over Xmas. Got these bad boys as part of a mixed Ebay deal - have now been paint stripped (think they were Emperor's Scythes previously? Anyway they are now going to be co-opted into Angron's legion). Cut off the side sponsors as have always thought they don't look very good. Painted versions coming up soon hopefully!

Got these guys painted up over the hols - have to say it's nice bringing back to life something that has probably sat unloved in a shoe box for the past 20 years.

Painted up as the 12th legion, and as said removed the side sponsors. Never thought they looked particularly good on the miniature and these were damaged, so gave me an excuse to remove them. Added a little weathering to them, and some decals from both the recent FW World Eater set and some old 40k chaos decals for the World Eater logo - the first warning signs were starting to appear with these guys!

Any C&C welcome - might be a bit of a break now as I get a Blood Bowl team and Kingdom Death finished off, but hopefully back before too long!

A Great-Crusade era Fellblade for the World Eater legion.

I have no idea where this miniature originates. I don't think it's GW (it may be, as I was out of the loop for a while) and I bought it 2nd hand from eBay, where you occasionally see one surface.
But regardless it's a bloody lovely sculpt - and look at the scale next to a Rhino!

I haven't posted here for a while, but here's a small diorama I made. Some leftover minis from a tactical unit, a spare Rhino and damaged old Dreadnought that has had some minor conversion work for some battle damage.

The marines are from Vanguard Miniatures, Rhino and Dreadnought are classic GW minis (pretty sure the Dreadnought was lead so is definitely getting on!)

Final shot for scale - 'The last stand'

Love epic and always like to see more of it.
The painting is absolutely solid too.

Couple of things;

That fellblade looks to be the old forumware sculpt.
Searching that on eBay tends to bring up stuff from time to time (as well as searching for “fan made warhammer”)
There are also variants of the other legion tanks about too.

Is that a contemptor dreadnought fist on the sgt?
Seems to scale up pretty decently for it.

On the lines of buying, keep an eye on eBay as a 30k epic sculpt of him pops up from time to time for between £5-£10.
Usually resin and you can find it by searching epic primarch or “6mm angry marine” when they are about.
I managed to grab my Vulkan from a guy who had them all up for a while before being removed from eBay.

Thanks Jackal - yes I do keep an eye out. There was a German guy selling amazing forumware sculpts of all of the FW stuff. It wasn't cheap but was of high quality. Sadly it has disappeared entirely now.

There are a few people on this forum that have shown off painted forumware products. The few I have contacted directly have either not replied or the reply was "no and do not contact me again". There is obviously a very tight community around that side of things (which I haven't been able to become part of even over probably 20yrs and more of this forum, B&C, even back to Relic etc.) and I think even though GW seems a lot more relaxed these days there is still fear remaining of legal notices and the like.

Fortunately the likes of Vanguard and Onslaught miniatures have started making some really great Epic proxies, which means I can still collect and paint without having to be part of the underground

Cheers for that Aphyon and Skinflint Games!

Another quick update. Some World Eater Spartan (equivalent) transports. What are they carrying inside? Probably something not very nice!
These miniatures are from the Vanguard Miniatures Novan Elite range - lovely little metal multipart minis, not expensive and I think better than any of the old GW Landraider minis.

Also some World Eater Destroyers. Always found the official 30k miniatures quite disappointing for these guys, you read about them having these horrendous, tremendously damaging outlawed weapons and then the miniatures are holding.. pistols. So not being restricted by WYSIWYG in Epic I have made these from a mix of 'tainted' minis, heavy and support weapons all again from Vanguard Miniatures Defeat in Detail range.

I also plan to get some drop pods to deploy these guys in.

Alternatively you could just run them ruleswise as tactical support squads for some close range AP goodness, though that does make them a bit less punchy.

Thanks that's a good idea. I don't the rules for Destroyers are that nasty TBH anyway (certainly not enough for the unit restrictions on them).

As an alternative I had thought of using them as a special unit in a narrative game - they are transporting a nuclear device (I need to do a conversion for this, some kind of bomb carrier) and need to get it to a certain point on the board. They aren't intended to return from that one!

Yeah, they're mostly just assault marines that have some piddly AP shooting with them, not that nasty but okay for 50 points more. My Death Guard won't mind the restrictions either, they get one group per 1000 points

...though it might've been a nice nod to all the phosphex they carry around if they'd had Ignore Cover as well, but hey.

My latest update, have completed some World Eater Cyclone missile launchers.

Anyone familiar with this blog will know these are set in the Great Crusade era, before the Legion turned into frothing lunatics. As such, they dealt with advanced tactical concepts such as 'shoot something so the enemy keep their heads down, before you charge at it, and which means less of your guys die'.

Interestingly, later World Eater tacticians could never work out why their casualty rates rose 98% after removing supporting fire units. Their response instead was to afix great big horns to their helmets, making them a larger target and meaning they could not fit through doorways, and also to paint their armour red, to cut down on cleaning supply charges from washing the marines own blood from their armour after they had charged headlong into defensive enemy positions once more

I love this blog - had a quick flick back over the ork stuff and just adore how the Epic type minis seem to catch not only the scale of massive space battles but also the kitschy 40k vibe that has gone a bit missing from the newer grimdarkier models.

You've made some really nice ebay finds too, always a treat!

Don't get me started on that. At least it's 'honest' when compared against FB's algorithm which just pushes forward stuff 'at random' (yeah, I know there's a payment model behind it, but even that one leaves a lot to be desired of).

One thing Facebook, Twitter etc. lacks is the sense of community that you get on the forums.

After the Great Crusade forum fell I've found it difficult to find somewhere with the dedicated pre-heresy and crusade era focus, and Epic makes it even more niche. B&C probably comes closest but the users seem quite geographically dispersed and you don't seem to get any events or anything like that.

Maybe I need to get off my ass and organise something! Either a new pre-heresy forum or at least gaming event

Was glad to see this as an active thread, though I see it was more happenstance than anything.

I went through this again via "blog" and man you've done some excellent work. It's inspiring and creates a wonderful feeling of nostalgia. I thank you for that.

I absolutely loved playing this game. I cannot understand why this isn't a thing anymore, a current thing. I have tried to get my game group interested in it a few times but they are usually chasing the brand new GW shiny that catches their interest. No disrespect to them, I'm just disappointed.

hen there's the availability of the models and the price they are commanding. I just looked up "Epic 40K" on eBay and their isn't an auction I saw that doesn't have multiple bids. That does beg the question though of "who's playing it"? Surely no one I know.

I'm hoping you do decide to post work here, but understand if you do not. Since getting back to Dakka I'm seeing the opinion that forums are slipping into the past. Being that I also am from the past my preference is to stay here.

I was kinda hoping Pacific would post some of his updates he shared on B&C on here as well.

Have you considered trying out Aeronautica Imperialis or Adeptus Titanicus first? They could be potential 'gateway games'.

Thanks Skalk and Malika a lot for the kind words! Really means a lot, I love Epic too and think its such a good game that deserves more people playing it - if me posting my stuff gets even one person more likely to play themselves then think that is time well spent for me!

As Malika says there is a really good community for Epic on FB. Or if you are not keen on that you can start yourself - I've been collecting two forces for a friend and I to play and we're hoping to pull in a couple of others for a mega-game of maybe 4-5 players. It's a lot of time spent by me preparing the minis and terrain but I enjoy doing it so it doesn't feel like a chore, and very little cost to my games playing friends too, other than their time.

Cheers Malika you have convinced me I will bring some of the B&C updates over here too

Hey guys, thought I would post some updates here for anyone interested!

This is two Beastmen detachments (transported by Gorgons). Miniatures are by Microworld Games, really lovely little sculpts and very characterful, I enjoyed painting them!

Thematically this is an auxiliary unit attached to a Great Crusade expedition. The Imperium was a lot less xenophobic during the Crusade and I think would have made use of abhuman regiments where available. You can imagine Crusade Iterators landing on some feudal-level world populated by this offshoot of humanity and convincing them to join up ("two legs good!")
I've added in a single legionnaire who I imagine being a kind of handler to the detachments (maybe this was a punishment for something and the equivalent of latrine duty?)
Any C&C very much appreciated!

Thanks mate. It hadn't occurred to me before, but I would say they definitely look a lot like them! I'm guessing, like the Rhino, the sculptor may have used that real-life vehicle as a starting point.

I've finished up a unit - World Eater Field Police (Consul-Opsequiari)

These are from an old piece of RT-era lore which has been brought back into the modern 30k books. The official example of them is with the Space Wolves (basically a police unit to make sure they follow orders!) but I thought it fitted with the World Eaters during the tail-end of the Great Crusade too. In Epic Space Marine, I'm using these as 'counts as' Commissars (which you get free with Imperial Army companies, and don't really make sense in a 30k/Great Crusade setting), with a small extra rule that means you can use them to allow Marine units to automatically pass morale tests if you want to - with a chance that the marine unit might lose a squad in the process of 'reinforcing orders' or the Field Police unit itself might get destroyed!

The miniatures are classic GW for the Shadowswords, the Devastator Company and command are from Vanguard Miniatures.

Glad to have caught this before it slipped into the realm of threadcromancy.

The detail you put on your models is stunning. The time you dedicate to excellent looking models is impressive as well.

No change in my Epic world, short of accepting that absolutely positively no one I know has an interest in rewinding the clock that far. My models aren't going anywhere though, and perhaps one day I'll see them on the table again. Until then, my continued thanks for sharing your work here.

Thanks so much for the kind words Skalk Bloodaxe and Camkierhi!

Skalk I hope you can have some time some day to get involved in some Epic, even if it is painting a few minis! And from what I have heard there might well be an official release at some point next year. Then all of a sudden, what was out of fashion becomes in fashion again and everyone wants to play it! At that point, like my dad's fashion, you can appear to be ahead of the curve

A quick update of a pair of Steam Gargants of the Snakebite clan. These are a lower-tech version of the Gargant as employed by most Clans, but is no less deadly.

These miniatures were created by a chap on the Tactical Command forum who helpfully sold me a pair. They're currently my main Gargant force, although I am looking for one more larger Ork Titan to have as a centrepiece for the force, and to go against the Imperium's Reavers and Warhounds.

An Ork spotter reports enemy movements from the vantage point of the Gargant

An Imperial Army weapons team decides discretion is the better part of valour, while Zuggit the Ork attempts to show off with a wheelie in front of his mates. Sadly the manouever was to end in tragedy for Zuggit.

Skinflint Games that is definitely an Ork horde and a half! Very impressive. Are you keeping going with those guys? Sometimes it can be hard to know when to stop I have found!

Some more updates of some more Orks! I'm currently working on a Snakebite Clan as well, along with some support units for them. I do enjoy painting Epic, but doing 100+ Orks for one clan is quite hard work, so this might be the last one for now (although I would like to do some Deathskulls as well).

World Eater Berserkers and Termite carrying units

The Termite carriers and Tunneling vehicles are from the GW classic range. The Berserkers are from a company called Steel Crown Miniatures. Sadly they have stopped trading, H&S Miniatures now occasionally carry them (when they have them in stock).

Then finally, they are led by a Centurion

A quick update with some Snakebite Ork Clan. These again are Vanguard miniatures. The little 'grub mounds' and Squigs are from CP models, the South-Asian-style buildings are from mighty-minis-uk.com. The Squig Catapults and Sguiggoths are GW classic minis, and were obtained from some extremely helpful people in the Epic Middlehammer 40k group, at an affordable price!

Thanks for the kind comments man! Hoping I can come through this project with my eyesight mostly intact, that's for sure.

I don't think I had posted this yet here but here is an (almost) complete army shot. Getting on for 10,000pts using Epic Space Marine/Titan Legions rules, there are a couple of individual bits to add (some Knights, Jet Bikes, maybe another Reaver) but this is almost done and represents probably about 3 years of work on and off.

The army will be featured in the Demo/introduction game event in March that I have posted on the first page of this thread.

@Camkierhi - wow that must have looked pretty awesome assembled on a tabletop, and you would have needed a big table!

A quick update with an Objective Marker. This one is just a bit of fun - the idea is you have a recon unit, using the latest mk6 armour for low heat signature, they have gone through all of the trouble of camouflaging themselves and their vehicle, but then just some lowly Squig herder has walked past and spotted them.

I will be honest mate, I stopped reading any of the new stuff following the Primaris fluff and the timeline moving forward. My 30k force is very happily hidden in the past where rubbish new GW lore can't find it, thank you very much

Some more updates, this time finishing off the Snakebite Clan with some big stompy things!

It had cost them six Gretchin and an apprentice Runtherd but "Ol' Big'Un" was finally ready for war. Supported by an enthusiastic crowd of Wildboyz, who were following along to see her squish things, the mighty beast stomped towards the front lines and the unwitting enemy invaders.

Magnificent, love him. Really want one of those now. Making me itch for an epic army or two.

One of the best things about warhammer in general is unless you are playing in current tournaments, really you can play any version you like. I have all the codex and rule books for each and every addition. So if I fancy a silly game in 3rd I can. Or get a bit more serious and head up a 7th addition game. The models mostly apply across it all. A little imagination in some areas, but generally you can do it. People really get hung up on the latest and greatest, but reality is you can go play what ever game you and your opponents want to.

Fair enough! I wouldn't delve in the Codex for the modern stuff though, just to see if there are other hints to the past and BFG related artwork. In your case I can imagine there might be some tidbits from the Crusade/Heresy/Scouring eras included in there which are new. No clue though.

@Malika - I shouldn't be such a grognard To be fair, I do like some of the new range of miniatures, and liked what they did with the new Votann fluff, so I probably shouldn't be so dismissive!

 Dysartes wrote:

Thanks mate - it's a Finback Beast from the Vanguard Miniatures/Skinners range. Really nice little kit and even comes with some feral Orks to arrange on it. I just added the gun to the top (which I think was from an old 40k Ork Kustom blaster conversion set), so it represented the rules in Epic Space Marine more closely. Now have this guy followed around the battlefield by its little original GW Squiggoths, which are tiny by comparison!

Just a small update on some terrain, which I meant to post a while ago. This is part of a railyard/industrial complex, and uses one of the GW Adeptus Titanicus terrain kits, combined with the train and rail-line from Grimdark Terrain

I liked the idea of Legion officers arriving in their own rail carriage, because why not?

I've added a few little dioramas to the terrain for anyone looking closely enough.

This industrial worker is playing Donkey Kong with some Orks trying to get to him

A techmarine at work on a control panel. Some Orks below are arguing about which of them should climb up to stop him, and take on the Ogryn 'bouncer' waiting at the top of the ladder!

Thanks Dysartes, yes I was impressed with the kit. Really nice quality sculpt, and I liked the thought that had gone into the design, such as the little spaces for magnets so you can stick the train and tracks together more easily.

My next update:

Cap'n Squigbeard and his Merry Band of Treacherous Gitz

Of all the treacherous gits that comprised the forces of Warboss Mutarg, none were more treacherous than the band of Orks belonging to the notorious pirate Squigbeard. Exiled from the World of Badrukk's Place some five years previously, after an infamous sub-contracting scam in which he ripped off both Human and Ork paymasters by effectively being hired six times for the same job (and secured an absolutely enormous pile of teeth whilst doing so), Squigbeard had been relegated to working for other pirates and the Stunty-beardy-lot of the inner planets; a group that was notoriously difficult to scam and therefore not much fun.

That all changed when the Capital Ships of the 12th Legion and 3001st Expedition arrived in system and the Warboss Mutarg, who had a canny knack for realising that he might then be meeting Gork & Mork in person sooner rather than later, sent a desperate plea (for an Ork, this meant less cuss words, and promises of even more teeth) to Squigbeard and his band; come back and protect the homeworld. After a final bit of treachery and first approaching the Imperial Fleet to see if they could better Mutarg's offer (the response was a hail of boltgun shells, which Squigbeard took to mean 'No') he and his aircraft arrived in Badrukk's Place. They were given free reign to practice the art of warfare of which they excelled at: piracy (and possibly a bit of treachery too).

The band of Treacherous Gitz - these were some of the first 3D printed Orks I've tried and they are some big boys! Definitely more 8mm than 6mm and I had to order some larger bases for them. I rationalised it by saying that Cap'n Squigbeard would only have the biggest and 'ardest Orks working for him, Orks vary a lot in size anyway, and they're a recon unit so are unlikely to be directly next to other Orks for comparison! They were however some really nice little sculpts.
