In addition to new characters, we also hope to fund a line of highly detailed resin western-themed building kits. Here is the nearly finished sculpt for the first one, a small shop. All we need to do is add some tabs to the sides of the walls so they can fit together good, and maybe add a back door. The inside floor is 4x4", side walls are 2" high and the roof and lower walls can be built as separate pieces so you can move your guys around inside. You can click the pic to enlarge it in the gallery and there's some more angles on our facebook page.

We're also thinking about using the same lower building, but putting together 1 or 2 other roof and storefront signage pieces, like a flat roof for ambushing your foes.

What do you think?

Looks good! Will certainly be keeping an eye out on this one.

The Unsung look especially tempting, and I can see them getting some extra work in Brimstone!

Thanks

Just got the sculpt for the 5th member of The Unsung, a ranger named Van Dyke. You can click the pic to enlarge

Just have 2 more to finish up for the Wormwood Wardens. Working hard one the rulebook in the meantime.

Oh, and also, the building sculpt is finished, just sent the files off to the printer for a quote. Here are all the parts, the kit will be 10 pieces, it will have 2 copies of the side wall and 2 copies of the roof panel.

Thanks Lots of hard work (and hard earned cash) going into this one. 3 weeks to go and I feel like I’m still nowhere near ready, but forcing myself to have a deadline is the best way to keep things on track.

I’m hoping to have a sample PDF of the new rulebook ready around next week or so.

I really liked this game when it was first released, but you lost me as a customer when we went all weird west. Still, good luck with the kickstarter.

Weird west is what has me interested!

Will definitely be backing just have to figure out for what. On items you already have renders for when are you estimating fulfillment as currently?

Post by: Necros

@Catyrpelius thanks and sorry to see you go. This is the direction I always wanted to take it but I know it's not for everyone. What can I say I'm a nerd and I love monsters

@RiTides I'm going to be using the Mechadrome Method with fulfillment and guesstimating way in advance, but hoping to ship much sooner. I'll have to wait until the rulebooks and everything is all printed before I can start shipping, and I'm betting Chinese New Year will end up delaying things... But I'm expecting to have things in the warehouse ready to go by April or so.. I was going to put June of next year as the delivery date just to be safe.

I'm still waiting for printing quotes, but I am hoping to do the rules as a deluxe box set that has the full rulebook + loot cards + fancy dice + punchboard full of tokens.. I stole that idea from the Twisted steampunk game. So that's going to have to be printed in China. I wanted to do something a little more special since it's basically a rerelease of the game from the ground up.

Might want to add a blurb on what Blackwater Gulch actually is (for those of us new to it). e.g. from your site:

Blackwater Gulch is a western horror skirmish game of Outlaws, Lawmen and Savage Beasts.

I'm not usually into weird west stuff, but this looks pretty good!

I have some new news I wanted to announce today. It’s a long one, so TLDR, I’m going to be using Prodos Games’ Unicast (resin/HIPS hybrid) for Blackwater Gulch minis in the upcoming campaign.

Due to recent gaming-world events I thought this deserved special attention and I just want to be up front now and let everyone know what’s going on from the get go. I know this will be a deal breaker for some of you, and if so let me apologize in advance. I have been back and forth over this.. I was going to switch a while ago when I first learned about Unicast, then changed my mind back to metal, but I made my final decision now based on overall price and more importantly the quality of the final product. To be honest I was a bit scared to announce this due to people’s "passionate" reactions to Prodos lately. Their recent campaigns may have had a lot of issues, and they might not be great at dealing with the public, but in all of my research and chatting with others in the biz, their track record doing production for other companies is solid and they have been forthcoming and answered every dumb question I can think of. Today I gave them the go-ahead to create the first Unicast mold for the Unsung gang and hope to have samples to show off shortly.

My goal is to have a retail-friendly game, with boxed sets of minis all shrink-wrapped and ready for store shelves at an affordable cost. Unicast comes with the added bonus of highly detailed “plastic" minis that are all 1 piece and ready to play right out of the box. Comparing prices to metal, I can have new starter sets for $25 retail in Unicast, or $35 in metal. Mold & 3D printing costs for 1 starter set are around $800 per gang for Unicast, or $1200+ for metal depending on the amount of parts. PVC just isn’t an option for me at this time, it is way too expensive in the low quantities I need, and more importantly the detail level isn’t up to my standards.

So with that in mind I’m going to be offering all new gang starter sets for $20 in the Kickstarter “sweet spot". The rulebook box set I mentioned previously will cost around $50 retail or $40 in the KS. There will also be a free PDF version of the rules too as usual (almost done). If I do a hardback rulebook instead, that would cost $30, but I think the box set will be more “special” and a better value since it will also come with Loot Cards, custom dice and lots of tokens & markers. I will also be offering bonus miniatures in the campaign, the first one will be the Jackalope and we’ll add others in as stretch goals if all goes well. The funding goal will likely be $20,000 because of the boxed ruleset, I need to order at least 1000 copies and it will be printed in China. If I do the hardback rulebook alone, that would likely cost $30 and give me a $15000 funding goal, but I can have that printed here in the US.

Lastly, the building kit I was hoping to add to the campaign probably isn’t going to happen at this time. It’s going to be very expensive to produce and the lowest margin I could afford will make it cost around $45 which I feel is too expensive for a little 4x4” building. I was hoping for $30 or less. So what I will be doing now is offering the print-ready 3D files as a free bonus in the campaign, and after the campaign ends I’ll start looking for other alternatives to try and get a better price for resin models.. maybe even try casting it myself. But for now, folks that have access to a 3D printer will be able to print as many copies as they want.

So that’s all for now, I hope to have some more previews in the next couple of days!

Interesting news.

Very curious to see how the sample Unicast stuff turns out, as I'm sure you are too.

Interestingly enough my Unicast stuff has needed more cleanup than my resins from Prodos in recent orders, but the overall detail is just crazy, considering the poses and equipment the figures have.
Even then it's mostly just been trimming off little excess bits of flash for the most part.

At the price point you're offering hopefully it works out for all parties involved, as that starts entering into impulse backing territory.

Do you expect to offer the freebies in unicast as well, or will there be options for figures in other materials (especially if the end up on the larger scale of things)?

Pretty much everything is going to be Unicast unless it's too big to work, and then it will be resin. The first stretch goal is going to be for the Jersey Devil, which will be a big monster on a 50mm base, probably around 60mm tall. So I'm not sure that will work in Unicast. We pretty much have to do the sculpt, then send it to them to check out and then decide if it will work or not. So if it doesn't work, then he'll be resin. Also artillery pieces like the Gatling Gun would probably have to be resin too because of all the different parts.. but I plan to keep that in metal for the time being.

I was going to wait until the goal is hit but I decided to have Krisztian go ahead and sculpt the Jersey Devil now (He did the Rake, Ghoul and Wendigo and the building kit). Mostly since it's a big model and I want to be sure what it will cost and all, and also because I just couldn't resist. Here's his concept art

A few updates. We decided to push the KS launch date back to August 29th. This is so that there will be ample time to get some samples of the miniatures done. Since it's an all new material for me I want to be able to show off some high res photos or a video showing the detail and quality. That will also give me time to keep working on the rulebook and cards and other items so everything will look a bit more polished.

Speaking of the rulebook, I just finished the first draft. You can click here to download it. It's just the rules, a lot of the gang bios and other things will be added later. It also hasn't been proofread yet, and still needs a lot of art, photos and diagrams. I wanted to get it out there now though so playtesters can start playtesting.

Next up, since the Unicast minis will need to have integrated bases, we put together this set of Rocky Base Toppers. These will be attached to the minis, but I also wanted to see if I can release them separately in metal or resin, for folks that might want to add them to metal minis. They are 23mm across, so they should fit inside the top of the 30mm round lip bases or on top of a GW style 25mm base. Here's some picks of each one, and also how they will look attached to a mini. You can click the pic to enlarge

Next up I'm going to start laying out the Loot Cards and Character Cards.

I recently received a sample of Unicast and was really impressed - and I think it demonstrates well the potential for your range:

Look at that bored out gun barrel! It's not going to match resin for level of detail, but looks really nice, feels robust and also doesn't cost as much. It lets you do things like that barrel without making the miniature in a ton of parts. I'm even more interested now that it's confirmed you're using it.

Obviously just planning out lead time is important - ideally schedule receiving the minis well before the projected delivery date, as you already mentioned you will be.

Looking forward to it

Will there be a seperate pledge for the buildings?

Are the buildings made by someone other than Prodos?

Edit: Never mind. Missed the bit about no buildings. Minis are nice and affordable, but I'll be giving them a miss because Prodos.

$20? Wow, that's impulse-level. Looking forward to it!

Yeah I'm real impressed with the amount of detail they can get. I just think about the Chupacabra minis we did last year, those little guys ended up having to be in 6 pieces because of the dynamic poses, so the body, arms, legs, tail and head are all separate. They're a pain to build. And those extra parts meant extra expensive. I'm hoping after the campaign is done I can update them to Unicast and have them each be just 1 piece and a lot cheaper.

As far as the building kit goes, I'm still looking into the best way to go with that. I'll make it happen eventually. Since it will have a real low margin I don't think I'll try to make that retail-ready and just sell it directly on my site with a small markup. The pieces are pricey since they're big and chunky, but I wanted them that way so they won't warp easily. So i'll probably just sell that for like $35 and take preorders to see how many copies I need to make.

We’re gearing up to get the campaign under way. Monday, August 29th is now set in stone for the launch date and everything is on track! For now, I have a couple more previews to show off.

First, here is the Jersey Devil sculpt. He’ll be the first stretch goal for the campaign. You can click the any of the photos below to enlarge them in the dakka gallery

Next up, here are two characters who will also be featured in stretch goals as bonus miniatures. First is the murderous fiend known only as Jacob, he will have a special Undying ability that will allow him to get back up in the next game turn if he’s taken out of action. And he’s followed by the infamous demon hunter Ashton Campbell, with his nefarious Book of Curses that only works if he says all the words right.

We’ll post the preview link for the campaign page as soon as it’s ready! Probably over the weekend or early next week.

Probably too late for the KS, but I'd like to see a ruleset compatible with the Shadows of Brimstone miniatures. That way, you can open the game to a boardgaming audience, with minimal investment. You could make character cards for the Reaper western miniatures, to generate interest from the Reaper miniature fans. Secret Weapon Miniatures and Reaper have just finished a Tablecapes: Mines KS, and you could make scenarios that use the core set.

Shipping… stinks. It’s getting more and more expensive lately. I’m going to be using ShipNaked for fulfillment, and that will be a big help for things like customs and VAT and stuff like that. US shipping will be reasonable, $3-4 per pound. Overseas shipping not as good, will be roughly $10 per pound, and that’s for UK, EU, AU, China, Japan and others. However Russia, Brazil and a few other countries will be much more, around $20 per pound. I’ll have a full shipping prices and info listed in the campaign FAQ. That said, the ruleset box alone will weigh 1.5kg or just over 3 pounds, but the plastic minis will be light so I’m expecting the sweet spot pledge with the rules + 3 new gangs + bonus minis to be around 4 pounds. ShipNaked does have warehouses all over that could make shipping cheaper, but the only way for that to work would be if I can send a shipment to the other warehouses directly from china, that means a minimum of 1000 copies.. so that would only happen if the campaign manages to go insanely well, like well over $100k. Just based on previous campaigns I’m not really expecting that to happen, but I guess you never know I do have a bunch of of stretch goals planned just in case, but there will also be a finite amount, I’d rather just have a few stretch goals that are easy to fulfill on time and then do a second campaign after the first one ships with more stuff, rather than one big one with multiple waves that drags on and on.

As far as other games are concerned, I don’t play Shadows of Brimstone so I wouldn’t know how to make balanced character stats for that, but if someone else wants to put together stat cards for our models then go for it! That being said, the new plastic minis are going to have bases molded onto them already like board game minis, but they will be a lot more detailed. For regular sized minis these integrated bases will be 23mm across, so that they will fit inside the top of the 30mm round lip warmachine style bases we have been using kind of like a base topper. They will also fit perfectly inside a 1” square for most board games too I’ve actually been wondering if we should even include the extra plastic bases with the new minis, since a base is part of the mini now.. so far I’m still planning to keep them so they match the old metal minis, but I was thinking of putting that to a vote during the campaign.

Also on that note, the focus of the new rules is to use our minis and stat cards, but there will still be rules for creating your own characters from scratch so you’re also more than welcome to use minis from other companies in your gangs too.

The theme isn't my cup of tea (western) but I'm all for some good looking miniatures. I think the ability to create your own characters is a good touch. I am interested in the new designs, detail and the material will help a little on being lighter to ship at least.

It is looking good.

The plan is for the figures with integral bases to still be unicast, right?

I wouldn't worry so much about making rules for uses in other games- as it stands, most of the Shadows of Brimstone characters are based on a class as it is, with a hero sheet based on that particular class and skill set. There's nothing stopping us from using any of these new figures in Brimstone, just like there's nothing stopping me from using my Wild West Exodus Jesse James as a Gunslinger in Brimstone!

Yep, all new minis will be unicast and have a base already attached so it's ready to play right out of the box. They'll be just like the jersey devil sculpt, most will have a rocky theme, but the bases are flat enough that if you wanted to cover it with flock and do your own style that will work fine too.

For now I'm still planning to include extra 30mm bases with them so they will match the old minis, but the game doesn't really have a base size rule like other games do. So the extra bases aren't really necessary, they're more just for aesthetics. Bigger models that won't be able to be unicasted will have to come with a separate base and be done in regular resin, but I'm planning to have a custom base sculpted along with them too. Just about anything under 50mm tall should be fine for unicast though.

Post by: ced1106

Yeah, I just meant you pick up the two Shadows of Brimstone base games and make up stats for the *miniatures* in those sets. Some of the miniatures are generic enough you probably already have stats for them. (BTW, some of the SoB boardgame owners are looking for better sculpts to replace their SoB miniatures, so there's your way into that market as well.)

Actually it would be super awesome if you could share the KS link with any facebook groups or other forums or wherever when we launch it. There's so many out there I could never find them all myself.

I mostly just post here and a couple of other forms I read, but I'm also doing a 1 week takeover ad on beasts of war and a banner ad on tabletop gaming news.. and then also have an announcement on those 2 sites plus the miniatures page and BOLS Gamewire.

I've been wanting to pick up SOB so maybe now would be a good time to check it out. I was out of cash when they ran the campaign so I didn't get a chance to back it. I could probably put together a PDF with stats for some of their minis some day. That's actually something I had planned to do for my generic rules, I'd take a boxed game like Descent or Dungeon Saga and then put together stats so you could use those minis with my skirmish rules.

Seems like making stats for Shadows of Brimstone is prefect for players to do on their own, if Blackwater Gulch is as easy to make stats for a gang as the fantasy supplement rules.

Half the fun of the ruleset is finding your own figures and statting them up to make them unique to you.

Here is the Kickstarter preview page. Still a work in progress, we have some photos to add, but all the info is there at least.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gangfightgames/1343971291?token=43a10a36

I'm still waiting on photos of the Unicast samples, will hopefully have them later this week. If not, we'll do a campaign update as soon as we get the pics. The 3D prints are happening this week, so I'm not sure we'll have the actual minis to show till next week.

Also not sure about the stretch goals.. I have a list prepared, not sure if I should just show them all? Or just a few at a time? I kind of think it's tacky to show a big list on day 1, but at the same time when I back a campaign I do like to see what else is planned.

For this campaign though I have a finite amount planned, just a few booster packs and bonus minis. I want to have a stopping point so that we can deliver everything on time rather than dragging on and on into multiple waves (and years).

Post by: Necros

No, it's just the rules as a deluxe edition box set kind of thing. At first we were going to do just the usual hardback rulebook & separate starters, but I wanted something more special. And I admit I stole the idea from Twisted

It would have been very expensive to have the minis included as a full boxed game. I wouldn't mind being able to do 2-player starter packs some day along the lines of what Infinity has been doing with theirs, but I think the game needs to have a larger audience and be more well known first and available in game shops. We would have to print well into the thousands of copies to be able to get a worthwhile price with all the printing and components that would be involved.

Plus as cool as the official figures are, using other systems figures like Reaper Bones (especially Deadlands for western-horror) lets players build workable gangs for like 15 dollars.

Looks like backers can join at the Gunslinger pledge, and have their own starter set. After reading the comments on the RuneWars Miniature Starter Set (and one of the old Warhammer starter boxes) not having fixed factions with a starter box may be a good idea.

For stretch goals, you only need to show the next SG and possibly the one after that. If you run out of tangible SG's, there're always scenarios, papercxraft buildings, etc.

I've also seen KS that included existing product as add-ons, rather than redirection to a website.

How about a $10 add-on or pledge level that gets you the final rules PDF, item deck, and cardboard tokens?

And a free final rules PDF for backers or backers over $50?

Blackwater Gulch - Kickstarter Pledge Manager Live! @ 2016/08/24 01:47:00

Post by: Necros

Yep, you can easily use any miniatures you want, you can even create your own monsters too.

I have goals planned out to around $100k. Honestly not expecting to get that high, but one can hope In the end we'll have the 3 starter packs, plus around 6 3-man booster packs and another 100 or so pages of fluff & special scenarios added to the rulebook. which would end up increasing the retail price in the end, but not the KS price.

There will always be free PDF rules though.. but the free rules will be just the rules.. all of the fluff and stuff is going to be in the printed book.

Also, if we do happen to run out of goals, I could make "fake" goals and upgrade the old metal minis to plastic.. that will happen eventually, but it will still cost a bit to do so I was going to save that for next year or slowly replace them as the metal stock sells out. Some of the newer minis that were 3D sculpts will be easy to convert but a lot of the early minis that were done in greenstuff will have to be resculpted. I'm just about sold out of the Tranquility Crew right now, and they were greenstuff, so they will probably be the first old gang to get resculpted and converted. And it makes sense since they are one of my biggest sellers for some reason

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself though.. even though I have lots of new minis planned I want the main focus to be the new rules.. since I'm going to need to print a lot of copies.. at least 1000, but aiming for 2000 to get a better unit price.

It may have been answered before, but what scale exactly are the figures averaging at?

Brimstone, Wild West Exodus, Malifaux and the like all seem to be clocking in around 32-35mm.

Are these going to be more traditional sizes?

Will the new minis sets be more expensive than the older ones, or are the old ones due for a price hike?

Post by: Necros

As far as sizes go, all of our minis are 30mm to the eye. they're about half a head taller than Black Scorpion's minis, but I don't have any of those other brands to compare. But from what I've seen I think they will be a good match for Malifaux

And for prices... the old minis will remain at their current prices until they are sold out. Then, they will get a price hike more in line with the new prices, because we'll need to produce more boxes and new character cards. That's also kind of why I'd like to be able to update them all to plastic, so the packaging and all will match better.

What's the thing on axe guy's belt? It kind of looks like a 2nd hat.

Sculpts look solid! You managed a lot with a one piece design goal.

THAT makes more sense! I was looking at the zig zag and thinking it was the brim of a sombrero. Though sometimes you do need to double hat up!

The unicast decision is really interesting, Prodos have inspired some 'passionate' responses but I think it will only take a couple of successful KS's using unicast to make that fade away. It really is an interesting prospect for miniatures casting because it really does enable a level of detail and quality that boardgame PVC cant match at a very affordable price.

These are some very very nice sculpts that also look like they have been produced by an experience sculptor who knows what will and what won't cast well. The unicast enables a price point that really is in the sweet spot and I think this has the potential to do exceptionally well

I like the sculpts and would be interested, but the shipping to UK is $40 - that right?

Blackwater Gulch - Kickstarter Pledge Manager Live! @ 2016/08/29 15:20:39

Post by: Necros

Yes, $40.. wish it wasn't that high but not much I can do about that :(

That said though, the minis are fairly light, it's the rules that makes it so heavy since it's a big hardback book.

Yeah, it's a shame, postage is so expensive these days. It kills the deal for me, but I wish you the best of success, I like the models. Maybe I can pick them up in the UK at a later stage.

Post by: Necros

If you go in for just the models, it will be pretty light They’re plastic, I’m guesstimating each new gang set will weigh around 4-5 ounces, max.. all 3 new gangs would likely be under a pound. I bet the box they come in will weigh more than the minis

But also, we decided to cap the UK/EU shipping at $30 for the Gunslinger pledge, to help out a little. Trying to see if ShipNaked can get the cost any lower. Here’s today’s update:

Howdy Pardners!

Wow, what a great first day! Just under 24 hours and we’re just over half way there! Thank you all so much for your support! We still need your help though.. tell your friends! The sooner we are able to get funded, the sooner we can start reaching for those stretch goals.. we have a lot planned.. many new monsters, and new heroes too!

Many have asked about our classic gangs and miniatures and in our previous updated we mentioned that you can add them in to your pledge. These are old starter sets that are already packaged and shrinkwrapped and waiting for you in our warehouse. Because they are prepackaged, they will all include first edition character cards. Those aren’t compatible with the new Second Edition rules. We were going to print separate gang card packs to include with your pledges if you order an old gang, but we think it will be easier to just include a full deck of character cards in with the 2nd edition boxed ruleset. That was part of our original printing quote, but we weren't sure if it was something we would need to include or not. Since many have asked for the new cards, we will include that deck after all. That will be a deck of 64 cards in all! We’ll get the main page graphic updated this evening to show that.

That leads me to the rulebook. If you downloaded the preview, you’ll see there are character stats in there for everyone. If the cards are included, do you want those stats in the book too? We may be able to lower the page count a bit, and overall weight, by omitting those and just sticking with art and bios. What do you think?

Next up, many have asked about UK & EU shipping costs. Unfortunately, due to the rules weighing over 3 pounds, shipping will be expensive. We are talking to ShipNaked about that right now to see if there is any way we can get it lower. We won’t be printing enough copies to send a whole second boat from China to Europe, we would need to print well into the thousands to make that work. Right now our plans are to print just 1000 copies total. At any rate, since the plastic miniatures are going to be fairly light, what we have decided to do is make each Gunslinger ($95) pledge cost a maximum of $30 to UK/EU and any other country listed as Zone 2. Those countries are:

Argentina (AR), Australia (AU), Austria (AT), Bahrain (BH), Belarus (BY), Belgium (BE), Belize (BZ), Bulgaria (BG), Brunei Darussalam (BN), Canada (CA), Cayman Islands (KY), Chile (CL), China (CN), Colombia (CO), Costa Rica (CR), Croatia (HR), Cyprus (CY), Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Estonia (EE), Finland (FI), France (FR), Germany (DE), Greece (GR), Hong Kong (HK), Hungary (HU), Iceland (IS), India (IN), Indonesia (ID), Ireland (IE), Israel (IL), Italy (IT), Japan (JP), Korea, Republic of (KR), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Malaysia (MY), Malta (MT), Montenegro (ME), Netherlands (NL), New Zealand (NZ), Norway (NO), Peru (PE), Philippines (PH), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Qatar (QA), Romania (RO), Saudi Arabia (SA), Serbia (RS), Singapore (SG), Slovakia (SK), Slovenia (SI), South Africa (ZA), Spain (ES), Sweden (SE), Switzerland (CH), Taiwan (TW), Thailand (TH), Turkey (TR), Ukraine (UA), United Arab Emirates (AE), United Kingdom (GB)

Hopefully that will make things a bit more affordable for our Gunsligners across the sea! We will let everyone know if we are able to get those costs any lower as well.

Thanks again for your support! Please spread the world!

Big update today! Cheaper shipping for the UK and some stretch goal updates.

Howdy Pardners!

Things are moving along very nice, we are now up to 65% and climbing!

I have some great news for UK backers! We will now be able to send a small shipment of Gameworld Rulesets and Gang Starter Sets to the ShipNaked warehouse in the UK, to cover all UK and EU pledges. This means the shipping price for UK backers has just dropped to $4 per pound, the same as US shipping! And we get a small discount on the rest of the EU, which will be $8 per pound. Other parts of the world will still be $10 a pound, but we are also capping the shipping charge at $30 for Gunslinger pledges. We hope these new shipping costs will help you out and entice more gunslingers to join the fray!

Next up, we have decided to shuffle around some stretch goals. Since the Jersey Devil miniature is already sculpted, we decided to just include that for free with all Gunslinger and Bounty Hunter pledges! However, to save on costs, he won't come packed in a final retail box like everything else, but we'll stick him in a clamshell for protection.

Since he is no longer a stretch goal, we decided to move Ashton Cambell up to the $25,000 stretch goal and revealed a new character to the $35,000 spot.. Mr. Kreeper. He's based on the monster from the movie Jeeper's Creepers, who wore a duster and a hat, so he fits! We'll show some more after we hit the funding goal.. lots on deck! We just updated the main campaign page with new graphics to illustrate the new goals and pledge levels. Here is Mr. Kreeper, in case you haven't seen him before:

That's all for today's update. Tomorrow we hope to be getting preview pics of the final Unsung production minis, so we'll show them off when we get them!

Thank you again for your support! Please continue to help spread the word! We're getting closer!

Hey Necros. You should put a link directly to the KS page in your signature line or at the bottom of your posts.

I clicked around a few times and couldn't land on the KS page, which might be all some folks are willing to click.

Here's a direct link to the Kickstarter page.

The minis look awesome, by the way! Are you still using the same sculptor?

Edit: Oh, yea. BACKED! Nice-looking stuff you've got here. Wild West solidarity, baby!

Gee whiz, totally forgot about that. Been real busy these last few days to say the least but thanks! Added it now.

We’re using a couple of different sculptors. Clint Maclean did all of the Wormwood Wardens and other skinwalkers. JinVe did Miss Lavoe, Charlie Graves and Ruthie Mae. Prodos’ sculptor did the rest of the Unsung minis. And Krisztian Hartman did Fester, The Rake, Eater of Hearts and the Jersey Devil, and also the rocky bases that all of the minis will get. Also Bob Naismith did the Jackalope and Heavy Bolter, those will be later stretch goals if we can get to them.

Howdy Pardners!

As promised, here is a photo if the first batch of production miniatures for the Unsung!

Click here for a high res close up version.

As you can see, the miniatures are all 1 piece! Even Van Dyke running with his Rifle and J. W. Clarkson swinging his axe. In metal they would have had to be 2 or 3 pieces, not to mention the bases. I'm still amazed whenever I see them.

I've also decided to splurge a little and I asked Krisztian to start the sculpt for Ashton Campbell. He's one character I really would love to add to the game, so I'm hoping that seeing the final sculpt will help entice more folks to jump in and get him unlocked I will share that when I get pictures, it will probably take a week or so.

I think we're in a good place and are at exactly 75% funded now, and climbing. Please share with all of your friends

Yeah I'm pretty surprised, they were even able to get Janey's little cigarette and everything I'm going to be sending a set out for pro painting, and gonna paint up my own set as soon as I get em, so I'll post painted pics when I get em

Here's a link about Prodos' unicast with some pricing info:
http://prodosgames.com/blog/prodos-unicast-is-here

Generally my costs were slightly higher than they have on their page, but half as much as metal minis would cost me. Or maybe the page is just listing prices in pounds or euros and I missed it, but not a huge difference. For you though since you are making your own minis it might be cheaper to stick to that? I'm not able to so this was the cheapest and best way for me to go. One big savings for me over metal was all of these minis are in the same mold, rather than metal where they always want me to have a separate mold for every piece.. so if your minis are all 2-3 pieces the mold costs shoot up real fast. That's the problem I ran into with my werewolves in chupacabras.

The only thing is that the sculpts must be 3D, because they may have to do some minor tweaks to be able to get them to cast right. These guys didn't need any tweaks but some of my other sculpts do, it's usually just to move an arm or weapon a little bit to get things to line up right.

I think that one of the winning points are that the casts are all done in a single piece. Not everyone who plays games ejoy the cleaning and assembling part, and for them, this is just perfect.

Oh, I'm not switching away from casting in house. That's half the fun! We do it that way for lots of reasons other than cost.

I was just curious about costs. I assume those prices are in pounds, although it doesn't say. Still, 60 cents per unit with no minimum order quantity is pretty good. You'll have to let me know what turnaround time is like for production and restocks. Again, just curious.

I agree that single piece casts with integral bases is a good idea. I think that makes the product a lot more accessible.

With Exiles (shameless link), we're getting a lot of customers from RPGs and board games, many of whom have no modeling experience.

Exiles is a very cross-genre game, so we planned for that. On a high level though, I think it's great for there to be minis-oriented games that are easily accessible to folks with little or no minis experience. FFG's X-Wing, Armada, and Imperial Assault games are all good examples as well.

Market expansion is always a good thing . Of course, it's even better if the games are Wild West!

I also get a lot of that too, people with more of a RPG or board game background and less of a 40k background like me. Lots of people have said they want to use my minis for Deadlands or Shadows of Brimstone and will probably never play my rules at all. Which is fine, I'm happy to sell stuff either way

Once I get things up and running with the 2nd edition I'm planning to put together a series of how to play videos that I think will help show how easy and fun the game is, without forcing someone to read 50 pages first.

As far as time goes, so far the 3D printing took about a week, and the mold making took about a week. Not sure about production yet but they seem to be on the ball with requests when I have em. I guesstimated my Kickstarter delivery date a few months in advance just to be safe, but I think the slowest part is going to be waiting for the rules to print and ship from China, and I'm betting the Chinese new year is going to happen right in the middle of everything too.

Howdy Pardners!

We are at 80% funded and climbing! Keep up the great work sharing the campaign with all your friends We can do this!

For today's update, we wanted to introduce you all to the Unsung and their leader, J. W. Clarkson. We'll be sharing more bios and other details about the world of Blackwater Gulch throughout the campaign.

“Yes little child; there are monsters in this world. And they're afraid of me!” - JW Clarkson

It was while working on laying the railtrack that runs into Blackwater Gulch that JW Clarkson first learned about the monstrous creatures of the night. Having finished for the day, John Williams Clarkson and the rest of his engineering gang returned to their camp for the nights meal and a well earned bottle or two of Bower moonshine.

Fed and rested, they turned in, each drifting off to sleep tired from the day's labours, all except Clarkson and his foreman Colin Buchanan. Unease filled each man and silently they gathered their weapons: Clarkson took his axe, used for clearing down trees, while Buchanan brought his railroad hammer. No sooner had they stepped from the light of the dying fire into the shadows, the creatures attacked.

Huge, monstrous beasts fell on the sleeping railroad workers, ripping at flesh with razor-like claws; tearing at bone with giant teeth. It happened in seconds, but time slowed for Clarkson that he saw every detail, committing to memory the monsters that massacred his men. Buchanan started to step forward, desperate to help those he had once called friend, but Clarkson held him back, knowing only too well that to try to fight these beasts on their terms was certain death.

Instead, they waited for the creatures to finish feasting, then tracked them for three days back to their lair, and while the creatures slept, the two men slaughtered them with axe and hammer. They stepped out of the cave, covered in blood and so began their new careers as monster hunters.

To their side came Ruthie Mae, daughter of the preacher at Blackwater Chapel, intrigued by these two men who stumbled into the small church one night, seeking the water from the font. She joined them in an instant, keen to learn what they knew of these beasts, having witnessed first hand their evil when they slaughtered her father. She travels with the Unsung, blessing their weapons against these evil creatures.

Janey Bower, famous moonshiner and all round rogue, was discovered in the woods, half mad but intent on killing the demons that savaged her best customer. Her moonshining skills were turned to creating firewater, a deadly weapon that cleanses dens of beasts.

Finally Van Dyke, a bounty hunter, caught up with Clarkson and his gang, intent on claiming the bounty put on the gang boss' head by the railroad company. It was their belief that Clarkson massacred the railroad workers, but within an hour of catching up to the Unsung, Van Dyke saw the true beast that wandered in the shadows, and signed on.

We have just unlocked our first 3 additional characters since they are being sculpted now, there one for each new gang. All Gunslinger or Bounty Hunter backers may choose one of these solo miniatures for free. So, now it's not only the Jersey Devil mini that's free, you can pick the one you want. You may choose from the Jersey Devil, Ashton Campbell or Mr. Kreeper.

Additionally, beyond your free miniature, all other unlocked solo miniatures can be added to your pledge for $8 each if you would like to get any of the others. Here is a complete list of our next 8 stretch goals. Click here for a high res version.

We hope these updated goals will be a lot more straight forward and easier to attain, since we won't need to unlock a whole booster pack anymore. it's a lot cheaper to produce just 1 new miniature at a time.

Thank you all for your support! We are getting a little closer every day! Please continue to share

Please help us get our second edition funded!

No, not achieved yet it's inching upwards though. Since I was able to get a bunch of regular web sales recently (just like the last campaign) I was able to fund the new sculpts for Ashton Campbell and Mr. Kreeper, so we tweaked the stretch goals a bit and unlocked these extra minis.

But we're in the mid-campaign part now so it's gonna be slow. We've still been bringing in a anywhere from 5-10 new backers every day, but around the same amount are dropping out, so we've been stuck in the same spot for the last few days. Would have funded by now for sure if they stuck around, but that's Kickstarter for ya Still have over 2 weeks to go though, so plenty of time to keep moving and plenty of new stuff to show off as we go.

We are going to start posting regular updates now, at least 1 per day, each one focusing on a new character with their history and and also special abilities. I'll also be posting my own little video review of the new Unsung miniatures as soon as I get my samples. And hopefully I can at least get 3D prints of The Wicked & Wormwood Wardens done before the campaign ends, but 3D prints take a while. And when I get the art finished I'll be revealing some bonus campaign exclusive loot cards too

Yeah since I don't play Shadows of Brimstone I really just don't know what minis to make as proxies. I always thought that was kind of a Cthulu themed game. Won't rule it out but monster wise I don't really plan to go down that road anytime soon, I feel like that whole mythos has been done to death lately.. and zombies too

Here's our latest update

Howdy Pardners!

Well the campaign is halfway over now, 2 weeks in and 2 weeks to go! We've gotten real far in just these 2 weeks, and now I have a big update for you.

First, we have the final version of the sculpt for Ashton Campbell. Here he is, I really love the extra base details Click here to enlarge.

I just received my sample copies of the Unsung miniatures. I'm really impressed with the details and the fact that they're all 1 piece. Photos just don't do them justice. I tried to make a video to zoom in and show the details, but it didn't come out too good. I'll try again, maybe with some better lighting. In the meantime, here is a photo of them with some other miniatures and a ruler so you can see how big they are. I also love how the bases on the miniatures fit perfectly into the tops of our standard 30mm bases. Click here to enlarge.

Last but not least, after checking our stock levels it looks like we only have around 7 copies of the metal Tranquility Crew miniatures in stock. I was planning to order more, but I decided it would be better off to have them updated to plastic along with these 3 new gangs since they are one of our biggest sellers. However, since they were sculpted with greenstuff, they won't work as Unicast miniatures because they will all have to be 3D. So, they will need to be resculpted too.

So, now you will be able to add The Tranquility Crew to your pledge if you want them, or in the pledge manager at the end. Like the other new gangs, they will cost $25, or $20 for Gunslingers. They can be an add-on item and you can just increase your pledge amount to cover them, or you may select them as one of the 3 gangs for a Gunslinger pledge.

That's all for today! Thank you all for your support! Keep sharing

You already have miniatures that can be used as proxies, such as the Bandito, Bandita, and male Indian scout. Of course, Lawman, Outlaw, US Marshal, and Rancher are generic.

Anyway, posting to say that the Ash base looks REALLY good. Well done! Maybe a future KS to make "monster corpse" bases?

Yep we're trickling our way up Things are going well and I'll have a nice extra bonus item to add in on sunday's update that will make it an even better deal and hopefully help bring in some more. I'm hoping to have pics of the Mr. Kreeper sculpt done very soon too, and some new art for the Tranquility Crew.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and I like those SoB characters, we might be able to do some of them in our next campaign that is going to be focused more on henchmen & minions.

Good to hear it!

Very interested in seeing how the henchmen and minions look, particularly if some don't have weapons or don't look heroic. Not enough secondary characters (or civilians!) in miniatures, imo!

Blackwater Gulch - Kickstarter Pledge Manager Live! @ 2016/09/15 14:14:11

Post by: Necros

Yeah the henchmen are pretty much all townsfolk or low level types, and minions are like pets or monsters like zombies. They will come 3 per pack and all have the same stats and the same weapon, but 3 different sculpts/poses. So like a pack of bandits will all just have 1 pistol, farmers armed with pitchforks, town drunks armed with broken bottles, stuff like that.

They're wimpy and easy to kill, but they get a special Teamwork rule, where they can kind of work like a small squad. If they move together and gang up on the same target, they get bonuses to hit. Or you can also use them solo too if you'd rather do that, but they're more effective fighting together.

It's getting there.. closer and closer every day Yesterday was nice, had around the usual number of new backers, but this time only 1 dropout. We've been getting a lot of new backers each day but a lot of dropouts too, so the total wasn't moving for a while even though there were a bunch of people joining.

We probably would have had a few stretch goals unlocked by now if people stuck around, but I know what that's like .. i've dropped out of plenty of campaigns myself because something shinier popped up

I have a nice update planned for Sunday with some extra bonus goodies, and hopefully will have the Mr Kreeper sculpt to show off soon, and new art for the Tranquility Crew.

Howdy Pardners!

We are now in the final week of the campaign and we have some great updates to share.

First, here are the screenshots of the sculpt for Mr. Kreeper. He'll be armed with an Unholy Blade and some concealed bone shurikens for tossing at people. Check him out, and you can click here for the high res version.

Next up, I have an all new bonus item for all Gunslinger backers! A little while ago, we sculpted a small western building kit that I hoped to produce in resin, but unfortunately I couldn't get a cheap enough production price to make it an affordable model. I'll still continue to look into other options, but for now I don't plan to produce it myself. But, that doesn't mean you can't have it! All Gunslinger backers will receive a copy of the print-ready 3D files for the building kit. If you have or know someone who has a 3D printer, you can make as many as you want! There are also other print services out there like Shapeways who can print it for you for a fee. Here's what it looks like, you can click here to enlarge.

It measures roughly 4x4", each wall panel is a separate piece, and there's little tabs on each wall so you can put the pieces together easily. It also has a separate roof that you can remove so you can move you models around inside. I plan to produce more building kits, and will probably just stick to releasing them as 3D print ready files. 3D printers are getting cheaper and better as time goes on, there have already been many kickstarter campaigns offering 3D models and I think in a few years time these will become a lot more common. So we hope to eventually have quite a few different building kits available for you to download, with compatible parts so you can mix and match and come up with more unique buildings of your own eventually.

We are nearing the home stretch. I should have some more goodies to show off as the week goes by, so stay tuned!

We’re having the Tranquility Crew resculpted and rereleased as part of our Second Edition campaign, as the original metal miniatures are pretty much sold out now, and they need to be redone in 3D to work as Unicast miniatures.

(On that note, we plan to eventually do the same to all of our gangs when the metal minis sell out, but those that were done in 3D will probably not get a resuclpt since the files are already ready to go)

Anyway, we’re getting new concept art for the Tranquility Crew done now. Here are the first two, Captain Nathan Reinhardt and Adam James. We should have the art for the rest of the crew done today or tomorrow. Also Krisztian has just started sculpting Captain Reinhardt and we should at least have some WIP pics to show this weekend.

You can get the new Tranquility Crew in our kickstarter now. You can select them as one of the gangs in the Gunslinger pledge, or they will be a $20 add-on if you want the other 3 gangs too. Or separately for pledges they will cost $25. Retail price is expected to be $30 for all new gangs.

Each gang starter will also include quickstart rules, character cards and a bonus loot card not included in the standard deck that comes in the ruleset box

And, here are the remaining new Tranquility Crew members. Reverend Shepard, Dr. Simmons and Julie the Engineer.

I'm having Captain Reinholdt sculpted now, he probably won't be finished until next week, but I will at least have some WIP shots to show off over the weekened for our end-of-the-campaign push

We're almost there, time is running out. We had a nice bump when the 48 hour warning emails went out, and we're currently at 94%. We are dangerously close to funding!

I have some good news to share today! First off, Beasts of War did a great review of the game and campaign and showed some awesome closeups of the Unsung minis we sent to them. Check out their Weekeneder video below, or coverage starts a little after about an hour in 4 miniutes.

Next up, I had Krisztian start sculpting the new Tranquility Crew minis, but they won't be done until after the campaign ends. It usually takes around 1 week per mini. He just sent me a WIP screenshot of Captain Nathan Reinholdt. He still needs a lot more detail, but you can see where he's going. Looks great so far!

The campaign ends tomorrow at 10 PM Eastern time. We're almost there!

Development is moving along nicely. I was planning to build a “late pledge” mini online store, but decided to just wait and hopefully next week I be able to launch the Pledge Manger, and that will be open to everyone. It will probably stay up for a few months, until we’re ready to go to print and figure out how many copies of everything we will need. I’ll post that link as soon as I get it.

In the meantime, here is the new sculpt for Adam James of the Tranquility Crew. What do you think?

I think he should take his finger off the trigger until that rifle is pointed at a target.

Post by: RiTides

It's quite nice! I think the rifle could use a little more detailing, and I'd rotate his left arm slightly (if changes are still possible!).

Just got a survey request from the Kickstarter, you might want to include a url for the next ones that shows all possible options as I had to do some digging to see what was what

I'm super stoked to see this come to fruition!

I'll see if we can make some tweaks.

I sent out the surveys mostly just to get people's addresses, you'll be able to see and do everything in the pledge manager when we get that up and running. I was going to try and get Backerkit going, but I might just set up a little temporary online store on my site, if I can get the shipping to work right

Man, I completely missed this. I have to say, your minis' quality has gone up in leaps and bounds compared to the first few gangs. The Tranquility crew will greatly benefit from that new aesthetic. I have them, but I will probably get the new ones when they come out.

We have another new sculpt, here is Dr. Simmons of the Tranquility Crew! Not only can he patch up your wounds, but he's armed with 2 pocket pistols. They're concealed weapons, so the first time he shoots with them, it can be a bonus attack at the end of his activation.

In other news, I decided to hold off on the pledge manager for now. I figured it would be best to wait until everything is sculpted since it will be open to the public as well. This way newcomers will be able to see what everything will look like. We just have 3 more sculpts to do, so it won't be too much longer.

I've also decided to set up the pledge manager as part of my online store, I did that before it and worked well. Your pledge amount will basically be like store credit, so you will just select your pledge in the store, and you can add in any other product we have if you want to get anything else. So, I think that will be around the beginning of November if all goes well.

Next on the list will be the Nina Blackburn sculpt I think. Hopefully we'll have that next week, stay tuned!

Howdy Pardners!

Things are moving along nicely and I'm happy to report everything is right on schedule! We just finished our last sculpt and I just noticed that I haven't posted the last couple of new ones. Sorry! Anyway, here they are!

Here is Julie from the updated Tranquility Crew. We did a minor tweak and removed some of her pockets.

And next up is Nina Blackburn, she's a new Tranquility Crew character who will be sold separately.

And finally the last new character from the campaign, we have the Belle Witch who will be joining The Wicked. We're just going to cut down on the cheesecake factor a bit with the final mini and bring the collar of her dress up a bit.

Next up we will be finishing up and proofreading the rulebook, and getting all of the character cards updated too. I'll post more stuff as I get it

Our Kickstarter Pledge Manager is now up and running, and open to all! If you missed the campaign and would still like to get in on it, you can add your late pledge here:

http://store.gangfightgames.com/blackwater-gulch-pledge-manager/

If you were a Kickstarter backer, you will find login details in your KS messages or update #31. If you didn’t get in on the campaign, you can just use that site to select whatever you want, it works just like an online store. It will let you pre-order everything that was unlocked in the Kickstarter campaign, and we also have some discounted bundles too! Check it out and get your pledges in by the end of the year to ensure you will receive everything in the first wave!

Getting lots of work done behind the scenes. Things are starting to come together nicely! I just wanted to share our new cover artwork. This will go on the big box cover and also on the hardback rulebook. What do you think?

The horizontal cover art we've been using till now will be used for the Unsung starter set box cover. We're going to get new color art done for the other 3 gangs, The Wicked, Wormwood Wardens and the new Tranquility Crew. Will take a little while to finish them, but I'll hopefully have that by the end of January if all goes well.

We’ve got some new cover art to share, this is going on the starter set for The Wicked. What do you think?

We’ll also have art for the Wormwood Wardens and also the new Tranquility Crew soon too!

In other news (and at the risk of receiving a bunch of “I told ya so’s” ) I wanted to announce that we will NOT be using Prodos Games for our miniatures production after all. They suddenly don’t have the time to devote to our project (and wouldn’t get to it till maybe next December at the earliest), so they are out and ne'er to return. We will be sticking to metal miniatures after all. We are planning to have our new metal minis produced by the nice fellas over at Mindworm Games, and Knuckleduster will be taking care of most of our 3D printing needs. With their help, we still expect to deliver on time this summer

Also, switching over to metal is going to result in a slightly higher retail price, but the current Kickstarter and Pledge Manager prices will stay the same as pre order prices until everything is released.

I would have supported the KS if you hadn't gone with Prodos.

Now, once I get a few other things knocked out I will buy at least the new book, and likely a few of the other minis. I still have a few unpainted gangs from one of your previous KS I should attempt to paint first though.

How long will you accept late pledges? I may be tempted to jump in even though I know I SHOULD work with what I have first...

Artwork looks great.

By the way, I love Knuckleduster, great to deal with. I recently got 4 of their buildings and have them assembled and painted. The fact they come with interior furniture and still have a great price is a big selling point. Their newer figures are really nice too, so I know they'll do well with yours.

Thanks

Actually you can jump in on the Pledge Manager anytime.

http://store.gangfightgames.com/blackwater-gulch-pledge-manager/

It's just my regular online store, but all of the KS items are listed as a pre-orders, so any new orders that come in just get added to the list and will get sent out right along with all of the KS pledges. There's bundles you can choose that mimic the KS pledge levels, or you can just pick individual items. And also if anyone wants to get any older items too, those will ship out with your whole order all at once.

We're planning a new Kickstarter for some time this fall, after the current one is all shipped out. It will be a smaller campaign, just for new miniatures. We'll be getting some new sculpts done over the next few months, and here is the first one.. Tunka, a Werebison for the Beast faction. He'll be a resin ogre-sized model like the Jersey Devil. What do you think?

And as we're finishing up the rulebook and deck of loot cards, I decided I wanted to add a few new loot items, for cards that will come with the models. Here's some new loot art! There's the Unholy Blade, Bear Totem, Sack o' Cash, Brujah's Grimoire, Holy Water Flask and a Preacher's Bible.

I think the way the timing is going to work out with the current new releases, the next campaign is probably going to have to wait till early next year. Mostly because I don't think a campaign will do as well during the xmas shopping season.. so I was thinking maybe doing it around the middle of January.

Already have it planned out, going to start off with the 4 different minion packs, 1 for each faction. And then stretch goals will be for solo characters, pretty much whoever we didn't get to last time.

We're expecting the retail release to be some time next month beginning with the rulebook and 4 starter sets. Solo models will be released later, roughly every other week, but backers and those who preorder will receive everything first!

We're also planning a new Kickstarter to launch around the same time, with lots of new models for henchmen, minions, heroes and more. Stay tuned!

Just so you know Necros, they *ARE* the same scale as Shadows of Brimstone's figures.

I remember rambling about that during the campaign but we never had any conclusive info (or we did and I just plumb forgot).

For the next one it might not hurt to get a hero character in a size comparison lineup.

Figures turned out nice by the way, but you probably already knew that!

Going to get one more new model sculpted for the KS. He's a stretch goal, but I like the idea too much. His name is Tiny. He's an Ogre Lawman.

Nice! Any chance we might see the Flying Zarconis? I recall they didnt make it in one of your other KS, and they always struck me as a cool weird west concept!

Yep I definitely want to do the Zarconis, trouble is doing a new gang is expensive and it would be a big stretch goal in a campaign.

I've been kicking around ideas for newer, smaller campaigns focused on new gangs, or redoing older ones.. but I think that will be easier if I am able to get my own 3D printer and do the production in house. I'd like to be able to do 2-3 quicker and smaller campaigns a year than one big one. But I worry the smaller ones will be tougher to fund since I still need to make around $1000 per mini just to break even. I'll see how it goes after the next campaign

Pretty much just have to do the stretch goal images, then it'll be done. Also waiting on the sculpt for Tiny, but i don't think that will be done before launch. Planning to launch it on Tuesday, Feb 13 at around noon EST.

The Blackwater Gulch Minions & Monsters Kickstarter is live now! Click the link below to help us out!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gangfightgames/blackwater-gulch-minions-and-monsters

Blackwater Gulch is a Western Horror Skirmish Game. It's the late 1800's in a gold rush town where noble Lawmen, crooked Outlaws, savage Beasts and the malevolent Cursed all fight for control and dominance.

We just finished delivering our previous campaign and now are following it up with Minions and Monsters. In this campaign we hope to fund a variety of new miniatures for all factions and bring in some much needed reinforcements. Here is a list of some of the initial packs we are hoping to unlock with our main funding goal.

We can only make this happen with your help! Check out our campaign now!

Pleasantly surprised the pics of Tiny went slightly viral (if you can call it that) on Facebook. I usually get maybe 5-10 likes from the usual likers, this one had like 575 last time I checked. Never had a post perform like that before. I even got someone posting a comment about how evil my game is, I guess I’ll be rotting in heck one day.

I asked Krisztian to start sculpting the Black Eyed Children, I think it’s a good chance we’ll get them unlocked in the end, the funds are tricking up and if we continue to bring in a few hundred bucks a day it should be no problem.

Yeah he's gonna be a real big model.. I thought it would be nice to give the mortal gangs a few big models rather than having them only for the supernatural ones. There will be more big models among the cursed and beasts, but I'd like to have a few mortal ones scattered around.

Someone on FB pointed out that he looked like a leprechaun.. and now I can't unsee that. So I decided he comes from Ireland, maybe I could fit the Giant's Causeway into his fluff. Was thinking his kind would also be around Scandinavia too, where they have lots of stories about trolls. Or should trolls be a separate thing?

Are your minis going to be metal or resin? I didn't see that info on the KS page.

Blackwater Gulch - Kickstarter Pledge Manager Live! @ 2018/02/16 17:11:53

Post by: Necros

It's in the FAQ They are going to be resin, unless we end up needing like 500 copies or more of everything.. and I don't think that will happen.

My plan is to invest in a good high res 3D DLP printer (currently looking into the Solus), and do production straight from the 3D files.. no molds or casting. So instead of filing off mold lines you may have to clean up a few support spots, but at the end of the day it will be a much cleaner and more detailed mini, and less chance of warping or shrinking.

This also depends on print time, but I believe I can average around 50 minis per day which is probably the same as if I did resin casting. If it ends up being way too slow, I can still print my own masters to send out for old school resin production.

I'm hoping the printed production will work out though, if it does I'd like to move over to more of a print-on-demand kind of thing for all of my minis. That would cut my costs way down in the future.

Blackwater Gulch - Kickstarter Pledge Manager Live! @ 2018/02/16 17:53:41

Post by: BobtheInquisitor

Shouldn't have closed that window, then... Would the printer only be used for the current campaign's products or for previous campaigns' as well?

Prints would be for the new campaign for now, and then when old metal minis sell out I'd be doing them in resin going forward for restocking.

Totally forgot :( Gonna hit up Amazon and order a copy of the game. Lots of folks have said my minis are a great fit though. Which box set is the original one? Figure if I'm gonna play it I may as well start at the beginning.

There are two starters, one with an aliens and robots theme with a Lovecraftian frozen city and the other with zombies and demons and a more Indiana Jones jungle theme. They have different kinds of heroes, too. The first has a lawman, a bandido, a sneaky saloon girl and a gunfighter while the second has a lawman, an Indian scout, a tough rancher and a priest (Mage).

Brimstone is the reason I'm interested in pledging for your campaign, although I'd probably buy a nonmetallic Jersey Decil mini just to have. Any plans on a Chupacabra or Flatwoods Monster? Or Mothman or the Kentucky Goblin Scare creatures?

the valentines day kingdom death releases featured a pair of direct 3d printed minis (1000 in total) so it's clear they think it's viable at that sort of production level

it's going to be interesting to see what people make of the orange resin as a lot will have bought without reading the description and get a shock when they arrive!

Actually the Jersey Devil is available now, and in resin since it's a big model.

Also chupacabras but they are metal (for now)
https://www.skirmishgames.com/store/blackwater-gulch/chupacabra-minion-pack

Got plans for a Mothman, Sasquatch and many others Was also planning a 5th faction to be Tommyknockers, basically goblins type creaturs that live in caves and mines and eat unsuspecting prospectors for lunch. Might be a while till I can make that happen though.

Also over the weekend I'm going to be adding the rest of the 2nd edition models to the KS campaign as add-on items since a few folks requested them. Guess it's cheaper shipping to do one big order.

And yeah i saw that Kingdom Death thing. I think for smaller boutique operations like mine or limited short-run special products like the Valentines printing direct is a great option. I'm looking forward to having nothing in stock, and just printing & shipping whenever someone places an order.

Post by: Necros

Yes, for the minion and monster packs, they're $18 normally and $15 each if you pledge $85 or more.

Shipping shouldn't be too bad for the US, unless you add in the rulebook that's a little heavier. The minis are relatively light, even the metal ones. Unless the post office pulls some shenanigans with their prices again, I expect most pledge levels to ship for under $10 for the US. Don't quote me on that though, it's just a guess and shipping rates seem to be changing every other day. But in general US shipping won't be too bad.

After this is done I'm also planning to go back and update my generic skirmish rules to match the new BWG rules, and add new content for that, build more on the fantasy rules and add other genres like sci fi too. Been kicking around ideas in my head for that, if I could provide new content on a weekly basis maybe I could set that up with Patreon? Would be things like new genre supplements, character bios, modeling guides, scenarios, battle reports, stuff like that. Will take a while to get that all organized so it would be a few months away.

Yeah basically everything from our previous campaign is going to be metal. Same goes for any of the old classic minis too.

All of the minis from this campaign will be resin. The large monsters will be cast the old fashioned way.. For the regular sized minis I want to see if I can do resin production straight from my 3D printer, if it's way too slow then they will be cast in old school resin. Either way, resin for all minis going forward I'm hopeful that the 3D printing production will work, will be a lot more efficient for me to produce myself, but that will depend on the printer speed.

And me too. I have a feeling though in the end there will be some minis that will be better done in regular resin molds.. and then I can save the more dynamic poses for 3D. We decided to resculpt the Jackalope minis. Here's the first one. What do you think?

These minis will be produced direct from the 3D file, no molds used at all. This way we won't need to have a bunch of teeny pieces for the horns and head and legs, he'll be all 1 piece. You'll just have to clean up and file away the 3D print supports, rather than cleaning up mold lines & flash.

Once we get all 3 sculpted, we'll be launching the Pledge Manger. We'll be using CrowdOx for the PM this time, instead of my old online store. Should just be another week or so if all goes well

I also wouldn't mind a little more fuzzy wuzzy meat on their bones. The one you show is good, and I would be happy with him, but he looks a bit more fragile than the originals to me.

Post by: Necros

Yep the other 2 will have poses similar to the original sculpts. It’s actually going to be the same 3D model as this one, just in different positions. The antlers will be different for all 3 too. I kind of wanted them to have a sickly look to them, not be like plump or fluffy bunnies so that’s how they ended up being more skin n bones. I think it works though since they are minions, they basically just to eat the scraps left over by the bigger beasts. So that makes em extra ferocious when they’re about to bite someone’s foot off.

3D print production is the way to go for the future. I think we’re gonna see lots more “boutique” companies doing it too. I think Kingdom Death even had a 3D printed mini recently, but maybe it was a limited thing. Since we only need a couple hundred copies rather than a couple thousand, it’s more economical and easier to do. The costs are pretty much on par with traditional resin casting, and even though printing is slow it ends up being about the same about of time as making new rubber molds every 30 or so casts, waiting for the resin to harden, etc. Less labor intensive too. I think over the years we will see the costs of DLP printers dropping too which will make it even easier for newer companies to get into 3D production.

It's your decision, but why sickly? That's not an adjective I usually associate with Jackalopes. They usually seem hale and hearty, even a bit smug with all their "Hee hee Hee. can't catch me! Fast as can be!"

I'm hoping to have everything from this campaign be 3D printed, except the large models like Tunka and Tiny (due to size). Worst case if production will take too long we might to some sets in regular resin too just to split up the work load. But all will be resin. Any older models from the previous campaign will be metal.

One day when old stock wears out the older minis will switch to 3D prints as well, but that will probably not be for a while yet.

Might be fun to make a Giant Jackalope some day that is like the one from the twilight zone, forgot about that

I've been pondering this exact thing (as I'm trying to set up and develop my own game company and games), and I was starting to head to the same conclusion. Kinda heartening to see someone else reach it as well. I was also thinking you may wind up being to save a little bit on warehousing since you can, more or less, print on demand. And you won't have mold storage, either.

Out of curiosity, what resin are you planning to use for production and what printers do you have, if you don't mind sharing? I've done some experimentation with Fun To Do resins and really liked their properties, but always curious about other materials.

Post by: Necros

I'm not doing the printing myself, I have a 3rd party who will be handling that (Garage Gaming). But I do eventually hope to invest in my own printer and do print on demand minis just like you suggested. It's great for a small company if you can afford the printer. I was planning to get my own printer with the funds from this Kickstarter, but decided against it.. I want to be able to afford to get new sculpts done for the next campaign and also afford high end pro-painting that I think will go a long way in helping the presentation and hopefully bringing more in next time.

Anyway what you want is a DLP printer. SLA printers are more common I think, but they are very slow.. great for printing 1 or 2 master copies, but for production you want DLP because you can fill your whole print area and print more minis in the same amount of time as a SLA printer would do 1. SLA uses more like focused lasers I think, while DLP uses a HD projector so it can project the whole screen rather than concentrate on a small area.

The printer I was looking at is the Solus printer, it's a bit cheaper at under $4000, because you also need a separate PC to hook up to it, it basically treats the printer's projector as a monitor. Another good one is Envisiontec.. I forget the name of it, but it came out to like $6000. I think you don't need the extra PC for it, and it has a larger print area too. I will probably end up going with the Solus and a cheap $400 laptop to run it.

Look up some of Dark Severance's posts, he has lots of great info on 3D printing

Cheers, @Necros. I've got a DLP (Sprintray) and have been playing with it some. It's a little smallish on the print bed size, but yeah, DLP is definitely the way to go for this stuff.

Its pretty sturdy, really a lot like typical resin you see on minis. Maybe a little less brittle, not that I've tried to break them. Actually when you hold them it feels kinda more like GW plastic minis than resin minis.

Does it feel like the Shapeways stuff? I don't know if they were printed, but the Fly My Hawkmen minis felt exactly like the frosty white material from Shapeways, kind of a light, gritty plastic.

Some of the 3d printer resins are pretty darn good, actually. The Fun To Do Snow White and Deep Black that I've been playing with are just about as durable as injected polystyrene. A couple of others I've tried are about the same as most other resin miniatures (so not as durable as metal, but this shouldn't be surprising).

I agree that we'll probably see more and more of this as technology improves and the price point for capable printers drops. I will likely have to pick up some of those Jackalopes (just because) when they're widely available (can't do the KS right now...) so I can see how they turned out.

Cheers, @Necros. I've got a DLP (Sprintray) and have been playing with it some. It's a little smallish on the print bed size, but yeah, DLP is definitely the way to go for this stuff.
I looked at the Moonray printer by Sprintway but getting answers to sales questions seemed to take a week. It also seemed there was a language barrier as some of the terms they used were correct. The sample I got was good but too rough to be used as masters. Technical support and parts were important to me because I can't go down, need to get replacement parts, equipment within a couple days so I kept to places that had US Distributors.

Formlabs Form 2 was good. We use it for larger models. But since it is SLA one miniature can take 8-11 hours and if I add multiples, they multiple the time so 10 miniatures could take 80 hours. DLP is just superior for details and print speed but at the sacrifice of print area. Solus can do the same miniature in 2-3 hours, but if I add multiples it is the same time. I can fit 3-6 on a plate so in 2-3 hours have them done. EnvisionTec is what I use for most production runs since it will fit 10-20 miniatures on a build plate and print all of them in about 1.5-2 hours. The material for the EnvisionTec is more than the material for the Solus though, which is more than Formlabs materials.

Does it feel like the Shapeways stuff? I don't know if they were printed, but the Fly My Hawkmen minis felt exactly like the frosty white material from Shapeways, kind of a light, gritty plastic.
They aren't like Shapeways which is usually an SLS printer, powder coating which is why they are gritty. Horrible to paint with and overall very porous.

The resin is on par with castable resin if not better. It is better than Formlabs resin which tends to be very brittle. Thin pieces can be brittle, while thicker parts are about as good as plastic. I've dropped casted resin pieces and had them break but these are a bit lighter. I have broken parts of them but normally clean breaks, so a very small dab of superglue and they are fine. This is normal though with even castable resins.

Examples in Spoiler
Spoiler:
Traditional resin cast, next to 3d printed resin.

Traditional resin cast, next to 3d printed resin and primed. Can you figure out which one is the resin cast and which one is the print?

The great thing about 3d prints is that I can do things that traditionally can't be done as a single piece with casting or even injection moulding, without splitting it and then gluing. This was printed as one piece, which has cloth pieces that normally would have to be cast separately and then attached.

Here is the 3rd jackalope. I don't think he wants to share

And here is a render showing all 3 together

I'll take some pics of the sample prints as soon as the next batch arrives, before I send em off to get painted

Yeah, I backed the Moonray on Kickstarter, and while it's a decent machine, I agree that their technical support and response time isn't the best. The software also wasn't terribly great in configuration/tweaking options. I likely wouldn't rely on it for heavy production work, either. I'll have to look into the Solus, though I'm also intrigued by the Anycubic Photon because its price point is crazy low for a DLP. I've also heard decent things about the Wanho D7 (if you don't mind doing your own support; which is likely for the Anycubic, too).

And I'll shut up about that now so as not to veer too far off topic.

On the upside, are the Chupacabras now going to be printed rather than cast in metal? Because that would get me to add them...as long as we can keep it on the down low.

I liked the pink hair, but I asked Angel to go back and make Brooke's hair brown instead.

Next up will be the Jackalopes and Chupacabras
