I would agree that we may be past peak Potter, but there is still a very sizeable fanbase with further movies, books, plays and associated tie ins to come. Whether there is much gamer/ Potter fan crossover I do not know, but with the right sculpts and game it could do well. I will certainly pick up a few minis to paint as gifts for the missus if the miniatures are nice and Knight have a pretty strong track record in that regard.
Oh no need to worry, Jakey Trolling looks set to be milking this particular cow until it's a skeletal cadaver, there's no danger we're passed peak Potter if the slavish legions of Flying Numpties she sets on people who she disagrees with on Twitter are anything to go by.

I've never followed JK Rowling - has she got a problem with Social Media or something?

She likes to play canon-police with fic writers etc.
She likes to play canon-police with fic writers etc.
Canon police, as in telling people what they can and can't write as HP fanfiction?
Well I guess it is her universe, but then again, when inspired fanfiction like 50 Shades of Grey exists, I doubt what she's doing has any merit or point
I'd be interested in a Harry Potter-Universe skirmish warband type game. There are loads of faction possibilities. However, I am not keen on Knight Models producing the miniatures, if that is indeed who is behind it.
The Grumpy Eldar wrote: Well. Maybe they got into the licence because of the new movie this year. And the rumoured one of that new play that might come around 2020.

I'm to scared to go read it. I only read the summary of the story... and oh boy. SO from what I read and heard it was... really weird and allround bad. Like awful fan fiction levels of bad. The kind that makes you go "What... why?". It adds a giant... plothole into the story. That'd make the story highly impossible. At least if you go by the main books.
Tho if it's from the actual main books / movies. I'm certainly in. If it enables my to pain gold old Voldy.

I just looked up My Immortal on Wikipedia. Sounds like that fanfiction is a real hoot
A weird attitude to have to your fans at the very least. There will always be good and bad fanfiction around any universe. Hell, there's fanfiction surrounding celebrities. No amount of being a to your fans will stop people from writing about whatever you're known for.
I never understood all the Harry Pooter love. I struggled to stay awake through the first movie, then never gave it another thought.
BUT if this is the miniature game you've always been waiting for - then have fun with it.
If for some reason it becomes wildly popular in my area I might buy a squad of bad guys just so I can go around murdering annoying magical British border school students.
While the timing could have been better we are still getting a new HP movie in twenty days that is the first of a five movie series. So it's probably the second best time to be doing this!

I never watched the films - the books had a lot more interesting content in them that fortifies a very interesting universe. That being said, Rowling's prose leaves something to be desired - she certainly isn't the best writer, but she has made a very good story for people to follow. I listened to the whole series with the audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry - so much better!
As for a miniatures game, I mean... okay? Yay? It's certainly something I haven't been begging for, but something I'd try if an opportunity arises.
Also Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is going to give a huge amount of ideas for creatures and monsters of all kinds for this game. Combine that with groups like Gringotts, Death Eaters, Aurors and Hogwarts students/staff.. I think it has potential.

Assuming they have the license to it. Companies can carve up a universe all sorts of ways. They may only have rights to the original 7 (8?) films but not the new ones nor the books.
Yodhrin wrote: Oh no need to worry, Jakey Trolling looks set to be milking this particular cow until it's a skeletal cadaver,
Personally, I find the idea that a person with a net worth of approximately one billion dollars has any need to "milk" anything at this point rather laughable.

I think its more that she has a Twitter account and isn't reluctant in voicing her opinion on often controversial social issues, and her fans generally jump on the bandwagon when she does.

Not sure I follow this line of reasoning.
1. A new movie set in the same universe is coming out in a few weeks.
2. A extremely successful play set after the Potter books hit London this year.
3. Bi-coastal theme parks in the United States centered around Potter's universe.
I don't know what "hot' is considered, but it seems like the Harry Potter license is smoldering at least. Locally, because of one of the aforementioned theme parks, I hear Harry Potter commercials regularly on TV and radio. I don't think the setting is as far removed from the general public's minds as people here are making it out to be.
Also there Is the harry potter deck building co op game. Showed at Gencon 2016 and sold out every day, high demand as the demo games were a 2 hour wait!
Maybe it isn't at is highest peak, but I easily see this selling well. I know my Fiancee would get into this no problem

She enjoys searching Twitter for her name or coming across random people through retweets that don't mention her at all, then using the .@ trick to throw anyone she disagrees with out for a digital lynching from her braindead "Potterheads"(who seem incapable of human speech beyond telling people who dislike Jakey/Potter to shut up and endlessly chanting "OMG Queen! Queen, slay!" and the like at everything she says) in the obvious hope that folk she disagrees with(not just fanfic either, you only have to hold a different political opinion and find her in a capricious mood when she stumbles on your tweet) will be driven off the platform and silenced by the combination of abuse and notification overload.
It's a shame that she's such a poisonous person as she's not a terrible author or anything.
Following as the wife likes this (well me too but not to an excessive degree) and anything to tempt her into rolling dice with me is worth keeping an eye on. Badguys could make good generic wizards or cultists too, though KM stuff is kinda spendy to get for fodder minis.

It was.... interesting. My wife and I read it, and found our reactions to our various favorite characters' fates more entertaining than the book itself. It is a play, but it also does really stick plotholes into everything. Think of it like the Star Trek reboot. Getting it from the library is probably the more prudent choice.
I want to be excited. However I still haven't been happy with KM's miniatures. I like their game system but everytime I end up making a new miniatures order, I end up disappointed.
A few years back there were stories of JK Rowling being approached by a few of the larger RPG producing companies to make a game set in the Harry Potter world but she was very much against the idea as she doesn't want people messing with her world, Not sure how true the stories are but around the time I heard stories from a couple of reliable sources.
That's why I was surprised the see a miniature game in development although her tight control of the licence may have weakened over time.

The Voldermort promo art suggests it will be during their final year, but it might be cool if younger versions eventually get released.
I would also love to see some of the Dark Forest denizens like centaurs or Aragog's 8-legged offspring make it to miniature form.
Chances are there will eventually be multiple versions. KM just this week released their ninth Batman...
Tentatively interested in this, there's potential for some great minis (chances are if they're nice sculpts I'll end up with a few choice characters regardless of the game), and there's a lot of ways to take the rules.

On a serious note, since all we've seen is a movie still the license might be through Warner rather than Rowling.
For example even though Rowling will not allow other writers touch her universe, when the films came out there was a slew of tie-in books approved by Warner.

Is the joke that Knight Models figures are a pain to collect due to exclusives and all that? I have zero experience with their games.

It may have had more to do with an RPG needing to fill in all the blank spots on the map of the Wizarding World. Until recently Rowling had really only provided information about wizards in the UK. Other than two school names there is nothing about the rest of Europe and until she started releasing new background with the run up to the movies there was nothing about the North America, South America, Africa, or Asia other than a handful of Quidittch team names. She probably would not have wanted some random RPG company to start messing with her world.
Is there any real doubt from anyone that the license is through warner?
I mean, I have no interest in the game personally but I find it's pretty obvious that it's spun off from Knight Models relationship with Warner as a result of the success of the Batman Miniatures Game.
Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if by this time next year, KM release a Scooby Doo miniatures boxed set game...
Not sure this will work if it is just a fighting game, would be interesting if it heavily incorporates school life and has campaign for graduating from Hogwarts. And such.
Basically every woman I know is mental for Harry Potter - could be a really good recruiting game if it's not too expensive. The popularity has definitely peaked but it's quite an interesting proposition regardless.
Jehan-reznor wrote: Not sure this will work if it is just a fighting game, would be interesting if it heavily incorporates school life and has campaign for graduating from Hogwarts. And such.
Not sure academics and graduation would make for a compelling miniature game. That seems more board-gamey to me, or RPG-related. Are you thinking of something on the level of Kingdom Death where players go through "years" as game events?
The books and movies have quite a bit of violence from wizarding duels to all out warfare, so I think a combat oriented game would work quite well. Plus, the two sides of the magical coin have very different focuses. The good side often incapacitates, binds, or "throws" opponents, while the bad side uses more straightforward lethal magics. I think there could be some neat game mechanics for playing out the various spells, especially ones that don't just zap and kill the target.
Knight have done well with both Marvel and Batman at making games about more than just punching and shooting- you can have Batman beat the snot out of the Joker's crew and leave KOed guys all over the board, but if they've been racking up Victory Points while you've got distracted dishing out beatings then unless you can take them all out (very difficult in the 6-8 turns you have) then you're not winning that game.
I think that same approach will work with HP, I imagine it'll be as much about grabbing magical artefacts or protecting certain characters rather than just zapping everyone to bits.
I could 1000% get my daughter into this, perhaps even my wife. I loved reading all the books, and it was fun to see the movies with my wife. There's nothing quite like bonding with your child by reading with them, and my oldest and I have read the entire book series at the end watching each movie.
So yeah, anything with gaming and family time is a win in my book.

What you describe sounds like a fun game to me. If the HP game won't let me cast Alohomora! to open locked doors then I'll be livid. LIVID.

I'm getting flashbacks to AoS here for some reason. Can't think why.
I really doubt the spells will have players doing funny songs and dances or speaking in odd voices to achieve game effects. But there are a fair few in this thread who seem hell bent on not talking about this game and just making fun of it, so there you go.
I think an interesting discussion could be had which seriously focused on hypothesizing game mechanics which could be used to incorporate the plethora of non-lethal spells demonstrated in the books and on screen in the movies. Certainly those spells could be used to create gaming opportunities that go beyond simply attacking and killing the other side's wizards, but you know, where are the lulz in a discussion like that?
Bring on more of the "Herp derp Harry Potter is for gurls, Rowling is a SJW beast, and this game is 10 years too late" arguments.

Like kingdom death would be cool, but it could be simple like needing ingredients from a potion while being harassed by draco and his bullies, or competition with other houses, doesn't have to be all be fights against the Death eaters.

I think here they ought to take a leaf from the Marvel rules. In that, everyone has unique abilities and often, they do only minor damage or no damage at all, but come with various special effects like throwing or pinning a target, hitting everyone along a straight line, ricocheting round corners ect. Something like that, where every attack has some kind of special effect attached, would work, and instead of having certain attacks for certain characters, there are general classes of spell that anyone proficient in that class can use. Maybe have it levelled so a Year One student isn't throwing around the same calibre of spells as Dumbledore or Snape, for example.
Looking forward to a little Harry Potter miniature that I can sub into Zombiecide: BP

Seriously?
Are you referring to poor cast quality or the sculpts?
I would definitely put them in the top tier of the market, some of the sculpts are absolutely stunning. I've collected them with no interest in playing the game, just to paint.
I don't think the hp minis will fit zombicide. All knight models minis are 32 mm. Zombicide is 28mm heroic. There is a big size difference, but the idea is neat.
I was hoping they would make a star wars or lotr skirmish game too, they made several 32mm lines with awesome minis.
455_PWR wrote: I don't think the hp minis will fit zombicide. All knight models minis are 32 mm. Zombicide is 28mm heroic. There is a big size difference, but the idea is neat.
There actually isn't a big size difference between Zombicide miniature and Knight Model miniatures. When you get into that range 28mm heroic can equal 32mm. The heroic though tends to refer to more "exaggerated" proportions which Zombicide does not utilize.
I don't have Zombicide 1, but I do have Season 2 and the walker zombies are 31mm from base of the feet to the eyes. The players range from 30-32mm to eye level. They aren't a heroic scale but more of a truer scale in proportions than what would be normally known as 28mm heroic. Black Plauge they properly identify them as 32mm miniatures as well. I think Zombicide being labeled 28mm heroic was more in lines with lack of defining the scale properly as well as at that time that was more the 'norm'. More and more things are moving to 32mm to even 35mm becoming a norm especially for board game miniatures. However the real test is the body proportions which isn't too bad for Knight Models... I just wish they'd improve their casting of them.
While I could have been excited about this...Knight Models are expensive for the quality you get. That being said I'd consider picking up the rules and making my own stuff.
You would think the day she walked into her first class with that wand, the teacher would just take one look and say "Oh, no! You are obviously evil. I'm not teaching you anything!"
Ah, but you forget, this is the school that literally establishes who is evil on their first day, then puts them in the same House so they can all be evil together!
That model is technically very good, but yeah, it doesn't quite capture the character like Mad-Eye does (though to be fair, he's one of the best sculpts I've seen in a long time), I think out of context it'd be easy to mistake for just a generic Fantasy Witch from Reaper or whoever... Might change with some paint on it, though.
Another excellent sculpt there. Can't wait to paint some of these.
Given that we've seen Mad-Eye and Sirius now, I suspect one of the first team sets will be The Order of the Phoenix. In which case, I'm going to guess Lupin and Tonks for the other two (assuming they stick to the standard 4-model setup of the Batman and Marvel starters).
Then presumably a set of Death Eaters for the baddies... Bellatrix obviously, then maybe Lucius Malfoy, Snape and Greyback? I think that covers the notable ones.
Sculpts look good, but I don't think ill be in the market for this game. The hp movies were good, but the hp movie and book crowd isn't generally the miniatures hobby crowd type (painting, assembling, gaming, meeting at flgs, etc). I forsee these becoming like the star wars or lotr minis from knight models, good for display only, as most will have no one else to play with (unlike the mumg, dcmg, and bmg).
Seriously strange to move their resources to this genre and slow down dcmg and bmg releases. Marvel and DC have mass cult followings, many of whom are miniature gamers, collectors, etc. That's why heroclix has been around forever.
Yep, loving the renders but have absolutely no interest in Harry Potter.
My main concern is how the fine detail will transfer to 30mm minis, judging from my experience of other KM figs I'm guessing that it wont. They can be a bit "flat".

I... what?
That model doesn't look anything like Jason Isaacs.
Cheeks, chin, and hair(Snape has an obvious part, Lucius has it brushed back) are all wrong for Issacs' Lucius.
The Snape model is also clearly based off of a publicity photo that they released for "The Order of the Phoenix" movie. A lot of the details that are present in the model are initially difficult to make out in the photo since he's wearing almost all black/dark purple.

And here is Lucius Malfoy.
Mr. Morden, give your friends hell! Tell them they need to go back to First Year Potions because they clearly aren't paying attention who's who among Hogwart's faculty.
The Emma Watson likeness is great, but yeah, the posing and overall presentation don't really embody the character of Hermione to me. I wonder why they went with the anime school girl stance and flowing scarf?
I would have preferred her just holding a book or aiming her wand at an unseen foe.
It's as if they forgot who they were sculpting and started with Hermione and finished with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Skill is undeniable, but the pose.....
AndrewC wrote: It's as if they forgot who they were sculpting and started with Hermione and finished with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Skill is undeniable, but the pose.....
Please, PLEASE, rethink this figure!
Cheers

Totally agree.
You know, with a head swap, that might make a good Luna Lovegood model. She seems the type that would have a self-aware scarf and always moved with a bit of a pixie-hop. But Hermione? This is just the wrong posing for a character of her sensibilities.
Yeah, what the heck is going on with that pose? That scarf rivals the Fourth Doctor's in length, the leg in the air is just odd... ditch the scarf and repose the feet more sensibly and you might be onto a good sculpt, but as-is, that's pretty surprisingly poor after all the others we've seen.
I think it's the best figure they've shown by far... might have something to do with me not being a HP fan and only having seen two of the movies though
Its not that bad, but it doesn't look at all like Emma Watson.
But it is that bad. A challenge for me, please find any reference to Hermione skipping or wearing a long animated scarf?
Now, I know that that can seem a bit anorakish but this purports to being a Harry Potter game. So I, we, kind of expect the figures to represent the characters with a degree of accuracy.
Yeah, when I saw that sculpt I was not thinking Hermione at all despite the face strongly resembling Emma Watson. My biggest concern for this product line is not the sculpts or the rules but rather the casting quality. I have had nothing but bad experiences with miniatures from Knight Models.
The one on the right appears to be an unpainted version of the deatheater. The one on the left reminds me of Alberforth Dumbledore. I would have thought the Elder Wand would be prominent on Albus. The Harry figure looks quite good. I can forgive the Marilyn Munroe wind effects as a reference to the first film when he gets his wand. Hermione? Still naff.
In that case there are some talented people in the Knight Miniatures team.
Using the same magics that animate the pictures in the wizarding world they have been able to make miniatures move as well.
As you can see here the two casts of the same mini have differences, like one on the right having his hand cast to his waist and the other has moved his hand away from the robe.
And look at the ripple effects on the robes themselves, the left one is simulating a gust of wind taking it away from his boots which the right one has yet to do.
Truly wonderful magics they are up to in Knight Miniatures, and very apt.
I'm liking them (although not a fan of the balernina leg from Hermione, but it's not opinion-breaking). But from how the final pro-painted mini on Bellatrix looked compared to the earlier version I wonder if the final minis will have same effect on generla opinion.
Automatically Appended Next Post: OK, I just read that realised how crappy my english was (you wouldn't guess I write for a living). TL;DR - properly painted Bellarix looked better than badly painted Bellatrix.
Harry looks like he's wearing swimming goggles, but at that scale I'm impressed that they managed distinct glasses. Ron looks the best of the three. I know that I've said it before and will do so again. Hermione is bad.

Too bad Ron's wand isn't snapped in half. Hoping that is a variant figure down the line as broken-wand-Ron was a lot of fun in the movies.

Use clippers to cut it in half and then use plastic cement to put the two bits together and there you have a broken wand fixed with clear sticky tape

Oh yeah, the conversion would be easy. I just want Ron's rules to reflect a chaotic, misfiring wand!
Everything else has been pretty faithful but somewhat meh unless you're big into HP.
That Voldemort though...he stands on his own. I could easily see him being the BBEG in a dnd campaign or some kind of killer wizard for a wargame or other skirmish. Fearful that he'll be prohibitively expensive but still.
The big question is whether they're switching over to resin for these. I know those test casts we've seen are in metal, but given the switch with BMG (and possibly the DCUMG? I guess we'll find out when the Justice League Dark set they've been hinting at this month drops) I could see them going resin here as well. It might suit these sculpts quite well, they can do a lot more with large capes/robes and a lot of the designs we've seen look like they'd fit the 1 or 2-piece casting the resin BMG stuff has used.
I believe they are, and it's the source of the delay. Justice League Dark isn't written yet afaik though, despite the October teases. I may be wrong but this is just what I get from oblique comments from Bruno and Mark Latham.
Ah, I had assumed from the FB teases of Constantine and Zatanna that the JLD were coming sooner rather than later.
Alternatively, they're going to surprising us all with a JLD/Potter crossover starter box that sees John Constantine taking up a Supply Teacher post at Hogwarts (now there's a Potter film I'd pay good money to see... )
D
All KM news/rumours that I have heard first hand: Potter is written, due November. There is a movie justice league tie in coming also, more of a world's finest style download, written by Mark. Constantine and Zatana are the start of the magic users but JLD overall is a separate thing.
November seems doubtful to me, mainly because they'd have to spend the full month on Harry Potter releases when it's the same month Justice League comes out. It's all but guaranteed we're getting some JL releases, and releasing (or at least announcing) them the month of the movie release is the logical thing to do from a promotion POV
Well we're steaming towards January and we've heard nothing for months. And it seems the admins on t e facebook page are applying the same approach to community engagement as they do on the Batman one. A thread asking if anyone body else's enthusiasm was waning was shut down. There's a joke in there about Spain and fascism, but I really can;t drag up the level of caring required to make one.
I believe it was mentioned a while back that the delay was due to the switch to resin production (the early casts we saw were metal), and I imagine the big BMG 2nd Ed release probably pushed things back a bit.
I do think KM showed their hand too early with this one though. It was first teased in the Suicide Squad book over a year ago and still doesn't seem that close to release unless there's been a lot of work going on behind the scenes despite some very busy months for BMG.
Still looking forward to some of the models, especially now KM's prices are less mad!
I’d heard the issue was waiting on approval of the sculpts from the people who own the HP license, but yeah, otherwise ziltch for months. The game’s virtually dead in my mind already.
HP is ready, cast and in warehouses, it's the double licensing whammy of WB and JKR having to sign off on everything. They're caught in a real bind because their contract with WB limits what they can discuss openly. I have quite a lot of sympathy for them even though it has been an almighty balls-up.
KM. I have a pretty good working relationship with them through reviewing bmg stuff for bigcomicpage.com . Ruleset was finished last November, if you can believe it

Is/was the Potter game going to be the same/similar ruleset to BMG?
Well, I got a Bat Mite promo from Knight models after Gencon weekend, but it was miscast( didn’t see it had no legs through the package). I emailed them september1st with no response and then again back on September 9th. I just got a response from the September 9th email today. Now I have to find where I packed him and send them a photo.
Their service isn’t non-existent, just three months behind .

I cant see that working.
Different people writing the rules. English guy this time.... His name's slipped my.mind, the guy who wrote The Walking Dead All Out War.
So Latham just said on his Twitter account that he's flying out to KM today.
The words coming from the semi- official people who run the facebook pages have claimed the reason for the delay in the HP release is Warner Brothers and that the game is good to go.
Sooo.... why's the rules writer having to go to KM?
I'm not hanging out for the HP game, but the amount of double speak and contradictions that hang around the FB groups is exceptionally tiring.

He also wrote the magic book for BMG, which has been poorly handled to say the least. Could be that he's coming in to make some fixes to that, or could alternatively be working on updating the BMG vehicle rules to 2nd edition (he wrote them too from memory, although he's listed in Flash/Arrow as an editor only)

Could also be for a press release, photo op, meet executives from warner.
Going to KS, sounds to me like KM has no idea how many copies to make. Given the reception of the Suicide Squad set, which sold well to start but still has hundreds of copies lying around, a KS campaign for Potter would ensure they have a fan base ready for purchasing.
based on the number of figures could it be Imperial Assualt style game. Variable layout campaign. I thought it would be odd to set up as a table top combat game like BMG
I'm thinking that Imperial Assault is a good example here. Though probably without the campaign progression / exp elements.
EG Imperial Assault had a tournament focused skirmish gameplay mode that, although took place on a board, played more similarly to an objective based skirmish game.
There's definitely been a push lately for board based skirmish gaming. I'd not be surprised if the idea has circled around the industry conventions and gotten a lot of traction. This would be more surprising if not for Shadespire, Aristea, and Godtear.
I'm very wait and see on it, but in some ways this is looking more likely to see play than what I assumed it would be. Still dependent on a bunch of factors though.
Unless there's a rule about using external scenery in the game KM better have a good excuse for not telling the people sharing their HP terrain projects on the FB page that they won't be usable.

"We'd get sued and shut down for breach of contract."
This another Mark Latham project, remember. I think a better analogy might be Walking Dead: All Out War. That was KS initially with a store release also, plus was very much a hybridisation of board and miniature gaming.
KM's calling it an "Miniatures Adventure Game". Jump to 6:20. I'm seeing a team vs. team miniature skirmish game on a grid. Are these resins or mock-ups with renders??
Boards look good as generic fantasy terrain boards for D&D and other griddy games.

Come on. Sometimes i want a company to act like a company. Have faith in your project and launch it. So sick of seeing kickstarters for companies that have been around forever. I have never trusted that kickstarters deliver on time and i loose interest in the game while waiting.
Chairman Aeon wrote: Never could see a war-game where you kill kids as a big positive.
This was always a big issue, but then some of the appeal also comes from it. You play the kids, you try and win by being sneaky and incapacitating the opponent, you play the Death Eaters and people die. Difficult to balance as a wargame, but potentially appealing. That said, this same idea could be executed very well as a board game.
Personally I'm not all that interested, I'm young enough to be part of the generation where HP was huge but it never appealed all that much to me, although I might get some sculpts to use elsewhere if I can
"Each 35mm miniature is produced in high quality resin, making it ideal for collectors, painters and gamers alike. ... Players must explore these environments, resolving Challenges and Quests in order to secure victory."
The board sure looks like a miniatures skirmish game, but hopefully MK will release the rules during the campaign. Also, hopefully, the challenges won't be "make a skill check to pick up this objective" and "your quest is to defeat the enemy".
It's risky to mix a board game with no other option for miniatures than resin. Wargamers will generally not like the grid/board and board gamers will not like the resin. I see this being an issue, not to mention the other common complaints out there about KM. I also wonder if the timing is a subtle jab at Monolith since this will launch in the middle of the Batman board game KS.
I suspect the planned it to launch last year and it's taken all this time to get the final sign off from the IP holders as they did a bunch of teases and then went silent for ages
they'll now be scrambling to catch up with the lost sales as the clock on the licence will be ticking even if they haven't released anything yet
I don't think Harry potter will have much of any negative effect on monolith's batman game. They have been previewing batman for months... not to mention have two successfull kickstarters with beautiful plastic minis (conan/mythic battles). Everyone knows how the mechanics work and it was explained how they perfected the flaws of conan with this version. Minis will be great and durable, in high quality plastic.
I also note a few things. The Harry Potter game has fragile resin minis for a board game (so no kids... or broken minis). And there has been no info really on the game or how it is played. I also believe there are far more gamers that are also batman fans vs Harry potter fans (look at the amount of figures, statues, movies, books, miniatures, boars games, card games, etc... wide variety for dc and batman, very limited if any for Harry Potter.
Such a niche market I'm not sure why KM went down this path. However it makes sense they are doing a KS, as I don't really see Harry Potter minis flying off the shelves Im sure the KM kickstarter will go fine, but it wont be record setting based on the previous info. My only worry is their customer service. I'm still missing pieces with no responses to my emails from their batman game, from three years ago!! From what I've seen you have to complain on their Facebook page to get a response of 'email us'.

I don't know if I agree with this in terms of merchandise.
It is broken down by House and Character and there is a wide variety of items for each. The fandom is pretty thirsty for HP stuff.
So, in terms of gamers who are HP fans, I think there is going to be a high demand for such quality, movie-accurate resin miniatures. And even non-gamers wanting the minis for display. Lots of adult HP fans, after all.
You missed my point. If you reread my post, it was in reference to gamers, not overall fans of a theme. I checked that store, besides puzzles, chess, etc, there are no major board games, miniature wargames, or miniature based board games (what we are here talking about, not shirts, mouse pads, etc).
On the flipside, there are lots of batman board games, card games, miniature games, and fans of batman games. Some of the more popular one being KM batman miniature game, DCUMG, heroclix, dice masters, other deck building games, characters in zombicide, etc.
My point was this won't hurt pledges for the batman game... there are many fans out there for batman. On the flipside, stats show HP games are a small a niche market.
Repeating what I said... I'm sure the HPKS will do fine, but it wont be raising record numbers. The batman game I'm sure will do well over a million dollars based on conan and MBP.

No need to get snippy. And I am pretty sure I understood your point, I just rejected it because you are under the impression the HP fandom is small and not interested in these miniatures. Consider that because there are no board games in the HP store, but practically every other type of item you could want to buy (there is a Hermione kids wig for crying out loud), that a board game would generate more demand because it is novel. But even still, that wasn't the point, the point I was making was that HP fans who are gamers, will snatch up the board game figures, and there are a lot of those fans out there. Your opinion that Harry Potter minis won't be "flying off the shelves" is what I disagree with.
455_PWR wrote: On the flipside, stats show HP games are a small a niche market.
What stats? Please share. Also, HP is not a niche market. How many Batman theme parks are there because there are two Harry Potter theme parks in the United States and one in Japan. The fandom is huge, which means the number of HP gamers in that group is sizable just playing the numbers game.
I've never been too much into Harry Potter as a book series or movies, but I did have an ex that was dumb as a brick and probably read two books her entire life, until Harry Potter came about (I got dragged to most of those movies, too, more than once). I didn't really enjoy it, and even still- I can't really see wanting to get into this but I can imagine it would have quite the appeal.
I have some Knight miniatures, only because I was trying to drum up some DC/Batman miniature gaming in the area I lived in not long ago. They are pretty good quality, and reasonably priced. As far as the game system goes, it's pretty 'okay'. If nothing else, if you like anything Knight Miniatures makes models for, then it's worth it just for the figure on the shelf (where my Batman collection should be).
Last time I'll comment on this before moving on. I was initially responding to posts regarding how this might affect the batman ks. You missed my whole posts points again, even when i pointend out what the focus was. I'm not talking fan base, theme parks, and fan goodies. This is a gaming community and I was and am only talking themed games (batman vs Harry potter fans). You can find most stats on bgg... I'll let you look it up yourself if you want.
That's ok if you don't agree with it won't be flying off the shelves, we don't have to agree (it's america after all!). I did say it will do well, it just won't hurt batman. I guess we will find out soon
My initial comment about the HP project starting during the Monolith Batman project was more about speculating whether Knight Models chose to launch at that time as a way to possibly hurt Monolith's project. I think we can all agree that the Harry Potter game will fund and have plenty of fans.
My main concern is including resin as the only option for the miniatures in a board game. The appeal of HP goes well beyond wargamers, as has been well discussed. However, are those folks going to want to purchase a game with resin models? Resin isn't exactly non-toxic, plus is tends to be more brittle and fiddly than PVC or other board game plastics. Quality control for resin models is tougher, as well. I would not recommend resin models, and thus any game containing such, for non-wargamers.
Although, that's more of an issue for people once they get the game. A cynical person could say, by that point, Knight already has their money... More generously, breaking the models is a thing that MAY happen, not a thing that WILL happen. - Though Hermione does scare me a little bit.
I don't think people will be looking too closely at the material, or over thinking that. But there might be some concern about ease of assembly.
As for resin toxicity... People, please don't eat your minis...
Agreed. My guess is that KM switched from metal to resin for their miniatures to lower the price, at the same time they were developing the HP game, possibly as a non-grid miniatures skirmish game, sold through retail. Then, for whatever reasons (eg. lowered risk), they decided to go through KS. But, since they don't have plastics experience (?) they went with resin, which may not be a good idea, based on the QA issues raised of their current products.
As for resin itself, I'm under the impression that resin models are sold un-assembled, another turn-off for many non-wargamers?
I've got a few of the resin minis and broadly speaking, they've got minimal parts. - EG, an arm, a leg or a gun to glue on. Nothing like the hell that was the Suicide Squad Katana.
My biggest problem so far was the Zatanna mini, and that ultimately ended up being a result of me being overenthusiastic when trimming down flash.
Compel wrote: I've got a few of the resin minis and broadly speaking, they've got minimal parts. - EG, an arm, a leg or a gun to glue on. Nothing like the hell that was the Suicide Squad Katana.

Second the Katana issue - my painter has given up on that and he is really good at this stuff.
Why do they make so many bits for some figures when you see so many models that are one piece with similar or even more detail, poses etc... And if they are making many bits - having mounting points etc is pretty essential when they are often so slender and hard to fix.
I'd say that, judging from the resins so far, it's something that they're trying to avoid. The most complex resin one I've had so far was Etrigan, who had his head, and 2 hands to glue on. Even then, being a demon, he had decently sized mounting points. - Only problem was I lost a hand somewhere between washing him and assembling him.
My wife has practically zero interest in my toy soldiers game and doesn't get Kickstarter. She does, however really like Harry Potter (in a normal person kind of way, not one of those Quidditch playing nutters!)
I, on the other hand have been playing miniatures games for 30 years and have spent a bit too much money on Kickstarters. I have only a very mild interest in HP.
This is going to be interesting!
Normally, I couldn't give a toss about the material that minis are done in, but this is one instance where PVC rather than resin would be the best compromise. Can you imagine the numbers of people wanting replacements for stuff that arrives at their house because all of the minis are "broken"?
With Knight models they are likely to be waiting a long time as well (currently at 3 months with no reply plus a ban from the official batman group for responding to someone asking if anyone else was still waiting). It’s a shame as they have really stepped up the game in terms of sculpt quality but quality control and customer service have taken a real hit in the last year.

I’ve been waiting months for a replacement to my Bat-Mite who has no feet. I send a message and over a month for a send us a photo reply, it’s been months since I sent the photo and just received a message (a month later) saying replacement will be sent soon. So soon is at least a month.
Yes, now imagine that kind of "soon" matched with hordes of KS backers on a project that will likely be KM's largest production run of anything they've ever made. I worry most of all about non-gaming HP fans that may not know enough to see such a red flag.
I am hoping that Knight Models use these incoming helps to help grow the company by employing a proper Customer Service Manager along with seeking advice on Quality Control especially with use of the new resin moulds (more frequent issue I see is that one of the models extremities breaks off in the mould and they don't realise so end up producing hundreds of models without a foot or back of head (both recent examples I have personally received).
It may sound like I am coming down hard of Knight Models but I really like the company and the products they put out but I think they have grown too quickly and not put enough resources into certain parts of the company such as QR and Customer Services.
Social Media is another area they haven't paid quite enough attention to with an official support group being run by people who ban anyone who criticises Knight Models effectively cutting them off from any official rule support or rulings.

If it's just like:
"Here's the Harry Potter Game for $X."
They'll do fine.
If they start going down the mantic games route of addons and addons, swapping things in and out, custom sets and so on...
It's going to be a frigging disaster.
I am hoping they go down the Mantic Walking Dead route with one main pledge level any 2 or 3 expansion packs as addons with maybe another couple of terrain addons on top. No complicated swapping of items or hundreds of addons to pick from.
I'm still surprised they are doing a kickstarter for this. They didn't for the batman miniature game, mumg, dcumg, and those games grew st a good pace and have a good following. It looks like the resins are already done, and there is at least a prototype game made.
It seems more like they are using KS as a preorder system. Although KS is a good way to reach out and publicly introduce your game to folks who aren't part of gaming communities online.
Dakka comments about KM's QA and customer service are my concern, and resin's not the best material for a mass-produced product. What large-scale resin KS have there been? HeroScape 25th Anniversary and (sorta) Aliens vs. Predator comes to mind, but... :/
It's less of a pre order system and more of almost a system to test the market. - Apparently this was a big problem with their Suicide Squad box set and, being something that could potentially make or break the company.
ASL is still official, it was just renamed to Batman miniatures and DC Universe miniatures gaming and support group. They confirmed at the time it was still the official group but name changed to cover both DC Games and to avoid people applying who though it was for the Arkham computer Games.

To play devils advocate just a second, it no longer has the "Official" tag on the name or banner, and when asked about being official the response has been that they "still have developers here to answer questions."
Can you imagine boardgamers buying this game and assembling resin miniatures? Or finding out this is a skirmish game? (Yes, BGG'ers actually think the HP novels aren't about fighting Death Eaters left and right. Silly them.)
Hopefully, they'll eventually sell the three main character without the box. I also figure this won't be the last HP game we'll see, anyway.
So, it's not an adventure game/dungeon crawler, but a beat your opponent up game?
Well, there goes my chance of selling this one to my household. A reskinned version of their DC game wasn't really what I was looking for - the minis are rather nice looking, though.
Those are certainly some wonderful minis. The likenesses on some of them are absolutely bang-on, especially Lucius, Sirius, Mad-Eye and Wormtail.
I'll have to see how/if they're available as either individuals or sets without a bunch of extra game stuff, as I'd like to paint a few but not if it's going to require me to buy a game I don't really want.
Some of the likenesses are stunningly good (mostly the older characters) but I think the Hermione and Harry figures in particular look a bit weird. Ron is relatively faithful. They'd probably have been better off sculpting them in the civvy clothes they bomb around in in the last couple of films, rather than the flowing robes they basically don't wear. I'm really into the DCU game and would probably give this a bit of a play and paint the models, I'm just a bit wary of the way KM have gone back and forth on this and the extreme delay in getting it even to this point. It's not something I'd buy into in the hopes of it really taking off, that's for sure.
drazz wrote: Its clearly set up to be a KS. The KM Facebook still has the KS date and logo.
There are "additional minis" and unlocked add-ons.
And chance KS didn't want to work with KM? Is it possible KS is the one that backed out?
Given Kickstarter's refusal to remove extremely dodgy projects, I find that unlikely
Maybe it's the Harry Potter / J.K.Rowling folks not wanting a Kickstarter to be done? I could definitely see that, as sometimes if there are fulfillment issues it can result in negative press rather than the positive of just putting out a game?
Eh, I think KM realized that the webstore better targeted their audience of KM customers, who knew what to expect from a KM product, namely fragile resin miniatures and a miniatures skirmish game. If you look on BGG, they're frothing at how KM did not create a product *they* wanted, namely inexpensive miniatures and a boardgame that was HP, not skirmish. I think KM should have put out a miniatures-only line, so that the boardgamers wouldn't have noticed it. Boargamers and fragile resin models are a *very* bad combination.
Yes, I know Dakkanauts wouldn't have any problems with Wands of Blastybits, but, as I understand it, HP isn't about fighting monsters and stuff.
Really glad this hasn’t gone to Kickstarter tbh, I think as everyone who has ever done a Kickstarter for minis has had delays and it would be extremely bad press for the game if it happened limiting the countries of shipping seems odd but again could be due to not wanting to be overwhelmed after all they are a relatively small company who may struggle to deliver the mass Kickstarter pledges. Just look at Hawk, Mantic and even CMON have struggled occasionally I will be doing a preorders for certain.
I assume there will be delays regardless, given the Batman stuff tends to always be delayed as well. The shipping I feel has to be a case of limited distribution rights. There’s just no reason a company in Spain could ship to the US but not the EU.
The replies on KM's FB page seem to be all over the place. At one point it's "We can't deliver this game out of this region ever. We could create new games later other time. Warner and Rowling just licenced it this way. We are sorry we can't reach more countries", at another it's "Pre order only, no retail", and then they're inviting retailers to contact them directly.
'm guess the limiting the sale to the countries and only through their webstore was a bad translation. It has to be, surely?
Either way, the communication is an absolute mess.
For anyone interested, the pre-orders are now live.
I'm kind of wary about the project given there is so much ambiguity to what they are saying, but you get PayPal protection with this one, so bought in the base game, voldemort and dementor.
Yeah, it looks like a combination of that and the inability to ship to any countries other than US, Uk, and Spain. Sounds like KM only have the licenses for those countries, and that's become the biggest hurdle for this game right now.
Apologies if this has been posted already - got an email from Wayland Games about it now being up for pre-order, have to say they are looking pretty good!
Don't know why I am surprised as they are done by Knight Models, but there are some damn good likenesses of the actors involved in the film.
You can definitely tell who the actors are, although I am not surprised after the brilliance that Knight pulled off with the Batman/Heath Ledger Joker miniature.
