There comes a time in every Games Workshop gamer’s life when should experience the scuff of hob-nail boots on rock, the smell of Dakka being fired into the air, the ground, the grots or even your neighbour, and the awesome swelling sound of that chant of WAAAAAAGH rebounding back and forth from the horde. Yes, I am talking about Orks and not a rock concert. I first came into Orks when the player in our group who was to field them stopped playing Warhammer 40K and we needed some Green skin flavour to keep all our games being Marines versus Guard or Eldar. So I started with the box of 32 plastic Orks back in 1992 followed by the starter set of Goffs and Gretchin that followed. Those later went to a new player who joined our merry band, but once you have played an Ork army there is always something that draws you back. It started for me a second time around about 2005 and should be called the Gorka Morka army. I was deployed back when that game came out and every member of my gaming group started an Ork band and they played throughout the summer, only to stop cold when I returned. So their Truks and Bikes sat idle and gathered dust as we returned to the core game. When I inquired a few years later they were more than happy to trade me their dusty figures and vehicles and I started a PLOG. With the PLOG destroyed by web forum failures I figured it was time to resurrect it. So without further ado here is Captain Brown Paint’s a WAAAGH.

First figure painted was the Warboss, in this case the Mega Armoured Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka of the Armageddon Campaign…he had not been the first model to bear that name in my collection, but he definitely was the more imposing.


Now this is a recovery PLOG, so there is lots already painted...here was the last milestones hit:

Oh yes, and other than Ghazghkull, none of the figures was purchased from a GW store...they were all trades or purchases off of my gaming group, WarSeer, eBay, DakkaDakka, or Bitz Barn.

Another awesome plog from Captain Brown!

You say you acquired alot of the bikes/buggies etc from trades, did you repaint them or is this the condition you traded them in?

It all looks very cohesive, so I'm guessing you repainted them.

They look great anyway, what are you planning on adding to them?

Repainted for the most part, some figures were left with original paint for parts, but most arrived primed or bare metal and others needed bath of Simple Green.

More Boyz of course (just bought some more on Dakka).

Now I was able to trade for a NIB Ork Nobz set, the old pewter ones. Fortunately it had a spare arm or two and let me finish up some of the ones I received missing limbs in trade.

But it did mean I needed to use the Waaagh Banner...but which WarBoss would leave home without one?

Now the new codex has Tank Bustas all armed with Rokkits or Rokkit Hammers...so since my first Rokkit armed Orks were conversions made out of Gorka Morka Shoota Boyz and some Imperial Guard Hunter-Killer missiles:

I think I will use the 3 of them as the 'yoofs' who are learning the tank hunting trade and have not earned their tank trophies yet. I figured with the Tank Bustas box set I would then have a unit of eight.

So a purchase off of WarSeer member heldane and I obtained the Tank Busta box for about 45% less than it is here in Canada.

...I'd like to think that they took the original version out for a test run, and the unshielded backblast from the missiles just erased the upper portion of the gunners, so the angry drivers tore off back to the mek with some choice words, and made him install some adjustments

ZoBo, that is a great explanation!

So I have been on a bit of an Ork and Gretchin run the last couple of weeks. I obtained two lots of Orks and Gretchin from a pair of Dakkites, some were partially painted, about six figures were tabletop quality (although two of them were missing hands?). The rest needed work, sometimes of the stripping variety...but they got me back on the Green wagon.

First up are some more Gretchin to add to my very small hoard of 12 and a Minder I already had.




There is an older metal Gretchin in that group of 6, the second Minder was needed as there are more Gretchin on the way. These Gretchin have had their clothing redone, their flesh highlighted, basing, weapons drilled, etc. Minder was a base coated model and has received highlights and repair work, basing and detailing to get him up to snuff.

I am going to transition from a Kult of Speed style army to a more traditional horde of infantry, not because of any particular reason, but because I was able to get a large number of models for very low cost and can make my horde more Ork like.

That double pistol came from an Ork I picked up from pretre. I repainted his pants, shirt, belts, weapons and highlighted the Ork flesh, but the basics and posing of the model was by him or perhaps he traded for it from someone else as it was different from the rest of the Ork lot I traded for.

Just got all caught up on this thread, amazing work recovering some of those models and giving them new life, that mad doc was one I'd have walked away from but you managed to do it very well, he had a club of a left hand that you managed to save, that amazing. Good work, lots of good stuff in here.

I don't have any 32mm bases to use, and since all my Nobz are balanced and have weights added to their original bases I am fine with them as they are...they also fit better in the Truks and Battlewagons.

I have to ask - You paint so quickly. Is there a secret to not getting burnout? - As someone, who, like you, felt the pull of the Orks, I got two squads of boys and a trukk painted up in short order, but now have hit the wall...

Well this time round when I started adding the Shoota Orks, Big Shootas and building the larger Slugga Mob I used a slightly new technique involving a brown ink wash on my base coat and then a highlight after. It cut one stage of my painting, although I still did all three layers on my Ork Flesh.

As for motivation, due to medical treatments I only was able to paint 3 models last year and am trying to make up for lost time. I am also taking enjoyment from finishing groups of models and watching the army grow from 100 painted models to over 180 painted models in two months. So to put it another way, by painting small lots of 3-5 models in a group I have a quickly achievable goal to look at to start the next batch.

I believe you are correct, as one of the figures seemed to be made of resin and does not really look like a Gretchin...he came in a trade. Someone else might be able to confirm that.

I second this. Sometimes I find that when I upload to dakkadakka that it's best to use the original rather than the "auto-adjusted" version of photos. The auto-adjust always obliterates details. I don't know if that's what you're doing, but if you are, that's a simple fix. Because seriously you've painted so many boys and we really want to see them in all their glory.

They do look a little like the photos of White Dwarf from the 90's.

As to the size of the Waaagh, I had 100 painted Orks and Grots at the start of this refresh and have painted 85 more...however 14 GorkaMorka Orks have been retired and given to our other Ork player so the final count should be 171 painted figures and 16 vehicles and bikes.

Every Mobz that can, has a Nobz leading it.

I think that is all of it.

OK, as I basically have not had much time to do painting, as when I do have some free time with friends I want to have some games I have been using the army.

Here are some shots of my Orks taking on a Space Marine force of Imperial Fists. 125 Force Points a side.


Corner deployments with one objective in each deployment zone and four more spread across no man's land.


You can probably guess my plan already. With one objective in each player's deployment zone I aimed to grab 3 more and control them with my superior numbers, perhaps contesting the forth. At the same time blunting the Marine spearhead aimed at the centre of my force.


Sometimes it is hard to fit all the Boyz in a single deployment zone.


With the deployment of the Marines, I almost thought they might be trying a refused flank, but then they dropped in some heavy hitters in their centre, obviously to counter my Battle Wagon.


My plans are already starting to unravel as the Space Marine Dreadnought survived a mass of fire and my Battle Wagon's Rolla.


View my Lootas had to provide suppressing fire...which did not suppress anything.

Oh man, I'm painting up orks slowly. But they do look so good en masse.

Also, really jealous of the old FW battlewagon, quite a rare thing to see these days. Looks so brutal as well.

Unfortunately no plan survives contact with the enemy.

So in the next three photos you can see I had taken four objectives and the Space Marines still only had the one in their deployment zone.





Things were looking pretty good, despite the Marine's armour saving them from higher casualties.

Then there is a gap in the battle photos...mainly because I forgot to take any for a full turn cycle. But in summary the Dreadnought turned my Battle Wagon into scrap. The Predator blasted my Trukk into little pieces and killed of some of the Boyz. General Space Marine fire was whittling down my Mobz except for the Gretchin who seemed to be completely ignored.

Return fire and charges destroyed the Dreadnought, Terminators and reduced several Marine squads to lone survivors (who would not die). The Space Marine Assault Squad and Chaplin made short work of my Lottas and grabbed that objective in my Deployment Zone. But I still held three objectives, contested another and the Marines only controlled two.


On came my Traks with their double rokkits with revenge on their minds and a Predator in their sights.


The Space Marine Assault Squad left the Chaplin behind and jumped to get into the fray in the center and help the handful of still surviving Marines.

I prepared my Stormboyz to charge next turn while still holding an objective.

It strung them out a little, but the objective was critical to have. I figured the surviving Trukk Boyz would get me another objective in the following turn and make up for abandoning this one when the Stormboyz charged.

Ironically they were my most effective unit...at least when it came to getting victory points.

Next turn led to Space Marine Assault Squad to charge to try and save the lone Marine still fighting.


Marine fire reduced the surviving Trukk Boyz to zero so only a single Mech was left alive to try and fry any Marine from claiming the objective.


Which a Marine immediately seized.


This was as far as my camera battery lasted. To continue with the story, the fighting raged around the central objective. My Orks just could not seem to get through the Marine's Powered Armor and my Nobz always seemed to be unable to score hits with their Power Klaws. The Marines whittled down my Mobz and eventually they broke as survivors fled. There was an epic fight between my Warboss and the Space Marine Captain, unfortunately without any Boyz to back him up, the Marine's saves kept him alive and unwounded. My War Trakks once again missed with every shot, doing no damage. The Stormboyz charged and were shot to pieces or slain in the following hand-to-hand leaving four objectives in Marine hands and only one occupied by my Grotz.

With the cards the Marines had defeated my Orks.

So in honor of Orktober, I have painted some more Orks (in fact there will be more than a few by the time I am done).

First up, five more oop Ork Stormboyz with metal bodies and rokkits.





Someone said I needed more of these...so a 50% increase to 15 models in that unit.

So I highlighter the Ork flesh, teeth, straps, metal, weapons, pouches, tongues, boots, and laces. Drilled the barrels, painted the bases to match my regular army, inked, rust effect and touch ups.

Wow, I have an old metal version of that Weirdboy and painting that thing is no joke. It's a surprisingly big job.
I hated my own final result so I'm willing you to glory on this one.

The Weirdboy as your main HQ choice is one comedy way to run a Waaagh. Not exactly ... Effective... But just so much fun.

I washed and then slowly removed the resin from the sprue. I have cleaned FW resin models in the past, but this is my very first finecast model. Far more resin channels on this one.

While Orktober has past, the Codex came out in November. So in honor of late arrivals...and just an excuse to try and make a Gorkamorka body and legs look alright beside regular Orks I converted this Burna Boyz.

PS: By the way, anyone looking for three more torsos and rocket backs and a Metal Stormboyz Nob let me know...I ended up with some spares.

Put the five together.



Took some time as they needed to be pinned with brass rod as you glue plastic to metal.

I do like those rokkit packs - though I think I prefer the Rogue Trader idea of Stormboyz being rebellious younger Orks who dress in uniforms and go through formation drills

Yes, I had some of those and gave them to our groups primary Ork player...although I have never seen him field them.

Finished the five remaining Stormboyz.

Dysartes I kept these five fairly uniform.

Can't argue with a bit more firepower, Captain - da Boyz are looking good

All looking wonderful here.

I like the rockit pack idea, the roughly same type for all and not ridiculously complicated like the kits I have seen. I too loved the old stormboys, they probably got dropped as not very PC, but they fit in well with the fluff of the day. Not that keen on the way they have gone with the orks really, all just samey.

Thanks Camkierhi, like most of my painting logs (well all of them) I use old models that have been similar to the art of Rogue Trader or the editions just afterward.

The big shoota was made from left over parts, so he has GorkkaMorkka legs and the left arm was for a regular Shotta.

In this group there is an original Rogue Trader Ork with new arms and weapons, two Gorkkamorkka legs and a torso with new arms and weapons, some Orc bits from the WFB range, all mashed together to make these three.

Thanks Tyranid Horde, the oldest Ork there was from the first Ork plastic box of 36 models that I split with other members of my gaming group because none of us could afford a whole box at once.

Now working on some Grots gifted by one of my gaming group.

When I finish these I will roll out my latest take on Grot artillery.
Also got two extra Grot heads...so look for some old Gretchen from 2nd Edition to get a facelift...or rather a head lift.

Next up is a little fix I have for old Gretchen from the 2nd Edition box. The mono-pose models with a Grot blasta.

So the sprue with 5 of the new plastic Grots provided me with two extra heads.

Man, those autoguns - the head swap seems to work pretty well, Captain, though it reduces their ability to be used as an impromptu caltrop...

Love those grots!

Also a huge fan of that looted Basilisk, looks really orky. I think it could be used as a Gunwagon? Or a battlewagon with a supa-kannon?

It's sad that there is no proper rules for looted wagons, if the ones released with the chapter approved are not taken into account. Looted vehicles are one of the things that make Ork army so unique.

Excellent to see such a large, well painted Ork army.

I don't normally pay too much attention to Ork stuff. Just not really my thing, despite how cool some of the models are. But, I have muchly enjoyed your Eldar so I figured I would peek in here. Mind blown. That army is something to be very proud of.

I would be honoured to fight that force any day, beautiful work and would be amazing to see them facing off against my forces on any table. Great work.

That's one glorious horde! The Basilisk and its crew are probably my favorites.

An awesome army, and something for us all to aspire to. My greenskin horde is far from the scale of yours, but I do like that you have kept with the somewhat cartoony green shade for the skin rather than the more 'realistic' greens I see around these days

They are heck of impressive and an army to be proud of.
