That's not exactly a high bar though. The variants for the Cerastus frame do look good, especially alongside the cog patterned armour plates of the Atrapos. But the head variants for the Questoris frame, with the exception of the first two new ones are just awful. Maybe they would look a bit better with a more AdMech paint scheme, but as there shown on the FW site eww.
Still I hope this points towards FW doing more addons for the plastic kit. New weapons(ranged and close combat) and more cosmetic stuff like variant armour plates would be welcome.
Those heads are a definite improvement (apart from the last one). Not sure why Forgeworld keep making those gas mask/cylon style heads. Transfers are nice though.

AdMech transfers?! REALLY!? Where are my House Vyronii ones that were previewed SEPTEMBER 2015!
Killing me, FW.
They'll be here. Eventually. Alternatively, you could ask Trayzan. He has the only produced copy so far...
(What was that? No! No, it was only a small Trayzan joke! Please, noooo!)

For a second there I thought that this wouldn't continue into the new thread!

May the Emperor keep them forever delayed!
Empty? No, I will be able to fill that space with my 8+ Knights for my Questoris Army. I keep holding off and doing other projects until I get my decals (now out of sheer stubbornness!).
I can't wait for the day they arrive, because I need a bunch of other crap too and won't order from FW until they get my gosh-darn decals!

I'm not asking for anyone specifically, mind you, as I wouldn't want them to get put to the back of the line.
Just curious!
It'll be someone unexpected. I reckon one of the two Angels (Dark or Blood) next. Also, thanks for the reminder - need to ask Forgeworld when they plan to do Dorn...

Noticed that the Khan doesn't even feature. Typical and appropriate!

Not that long ago and they didn't give anything concrete as per usual. In the interim since the preview though, they have released like... seven decal sheets. Two of them at least were wholly unseen before release (I believe). It is just so weird that Conquest came out so long ago and only Makabius has decals. What the eff, Forge World!
I really like the dwarfs. Imo the lotr dwarfs have always been the best on the market and that trend continues even with hobbit-designs. And though I dislike the concept, the miniatures of the goat riders look decent as well.
Something seems off about those dwarf sculpts.. the faces seem somewhat flat and featureless which isn't what I'd expect from Forgeworld resins. They look like mid-grade plastic sculpt quality ala mantic 2-3 years ago.

Eh. I thought I remembered them mentioning back with Two Towers that they tended to go for 'vague' faces on the non-hero characters because of likeness fees.

Flat featureless faces? They are mostly covered by beards and helmets.
They're beautiful sculpts imo, I second the earlier comment that LotR dwarves are the best there is.

I'm comparing them to previous LOTR offerings and I like the LOTR (and GW therefore) dwarven aesthetics overall. The details look shallow like someone took the 3d file for the face and flattened it 50% in the z-axis (towards the camera) giving the facial features less depth. Compare the guy in the front to Gimli for instance or the commander in another set..
Spoiler:
YMMV but the faces closer to 3d designed for mass produced plastic limitations dwarves like the pci below and not forgeworld resin sculpted ones. The rest of the model is fine but the facial sculpting is disappointing.

Eh. I thought I remembered them mentioning back with Two Towers that they tended to go for 'vague' faces on the non-hero characters because of likeness fees.
Possibly but it feels more like them using a sculptor who primarily works with 3d designs for injection plastic models complete with all the inherent limitations of that process instead of one more familiar with resin/metal sculpting.
I see what you are getting at warboss. But I'm with Vorian right now: You can hardly see the actual face - I'd maybe have a look at an unpainted mini before I finally decide.
Anyway, did FW let anyone know the Schedule of Primarch miniatures?
I'm not asking for anyone specifically, mind you, as I wouldn't want them to get put to the back of the line.

Magnus is the next Primarch. The next book is meant to be Dark and Blood Angels so Sanguinius and the Lion will probably be next. Dorn and Alpharius will be done when the story gets back round to them, I think I remember reading from someone's event report. It sucks, but I think they only have the one sculptor (Egan) on Primarchs atm.
Discounts and I have a complicated relationship, to say the least. I buy slightly more than half my stuff at full retail because I like my local GW manager.
And sweet, looks like the USD costs in the catalogue are complete garbage after all.
They use the printed price at shows, but if you order offline it does a straight conversion, based on the highest it gets in a specific time frame (I think that's the credit card company/paypal more than FW).
whalemusic360 wrote: (I think that's the credit card company/paypal more than FW)
Correct. GW bills you in GBP, then your credit card company/paypal converts the price to your currency at whatever exchange rate they feel like using, along with whatever fees they feel like charging. Read the fine print on exactly what rate you're going to be getting and if there are any foreign transaction fees attached.
Has anyone seen an update regarding the Fall of Cryxris (spelling?) since last year? That was supposedly the next 40k era Imperial Armour book coming out iirc and featured the tau vs the imperium again.
I have a feeling it will be delayed again. I have a feeling they are updating a lot of the Tau stuff all at once model wise. Since we seen pics of the new Tigershark remodel. I'm hoping they go the full level of effort and update the Manta. The Manta is really starting to look old especially the interior models. I want to see a cool updated one which I would no doubt buy at some point.

I doubt the Manta sells enough to justify a new model for it, honestly. And the new Barracuda has additional gun options, while the new Tigershark is a dual build, giving reasons for players like me with the old versions to buy the new ones besides just aesthetics.
Another reason for a possible delay could be because of GW messing around with the Admech side of things- there is a lot of new things that have Skitarii and Cult-Mech blending together, FW may have wanted to wait a bit for that to shake out before adding a ton of new AdMech to 40K. Especially if they are going to include rules to allow them to be used in formations.
See, I want to buy the Knight Styrix or Magaera, but I have no source for 40k rules for them. I'll assume they're in FoC.
I also want that sweet sweet 30k mechanicum stuff for my AdMech. And Remoras/Tetras for my Tau. And more Hazard Suits. Can't buy any of it until FW releases that book. So my bank account will be very happy, but my soul will hurt.
Gamgee wrote: I doubt it too, but if it's ever going to happen now seems the time since the grand GW renaissance.
I would suggest that, along with the imperial gate, the research lab etc, when they finally pull the Manta, it will be for good and if you didn't get one by then, you won't be. The sales for it must be minuscule and the molds vast and often in need of repair.
Get one sooner rather than later and upgrade it yourself.

I also doubt they'll update the manta model due to low cast on demand sell through. I'm shocked they made it in the first place frankly for a demos faction. Is it still the largest and/or heaviest model they make or did the most recent titan or stormbird surpass it?

I do hope they include ways of adding their models into existing formations as alternatives. Has forgeworld ever done that? The 2nd ed Tarps book iirc was mid 6e just prior to the decurion style detachment for everyone current phase of Gw game design. That of course assumes it's here to stay (sadly likely) for the rumored 8th ed later this year.
Not sure if this has been covered before but I noticed today that IA:13 is listed as 'No Longer Available'. Anyone know anything about this? Find it odd as that book isn't all that old.
I got the opinion the Tigershark's didn't sell well enough to get a new model either and boom.
I don't like the current Manta model enough to want to drop cash on it now. I like the newer Tau flyer look they are going with and would love to see an updated next generation Manta.

I know *absolutely nothing* about this specifically, but this is what happened in the recent past when they re released a book in softcover.

AFAIK the basic Tigershark was not all that popular due to weak guns and dropping basic drones, while the AX-1-0 was a lot more popular as a superheavy killer. So they merge the two into one kit and free up some space in their catalogue.

What if they just end up discontinuing the regular Tigershark for the AX-1-0. Even with the AX-1-0 I still don't see it as that popular of a unit. I never hear Tau players talk about them all that much and certainly not the wider player base. I think the last time was how useless they were for apoc games and that was a discussion from years ago I googled.
Still wish it was a new IA book or some more very much needed 30k stuff, but hey... why not?
And what would that much needed 30k stuff happen to be? Smart to not mention them though, that leads to Dorn syndrome. The more you ask for Dorn, the further off he gets!

Well, at least you'll get some nice sheets at some point. I'm hoping for House Orhlacc transfers. Maybe...
That is a bummer. At least I have a little hope having seen a preview sheet. You likely will never get decals... or, judging by how the releases have been, you will get yours Monday. No preview necessary!

I believe you'll also get hit for your local state taxes nowadays. (which is bs, since the FW web prices also include 20% VAT, which they simply pocket as you're outside the UK)

True, but this is a 30k House. 30k gets allllllllllllllllllll the love. That is probably why Bran Redmaw never got released! FW was really getting the Heresy going about then. Why release 40k stuff when GW is doing a bangup job now? So I see maybe Fires coming out and not much else for 40k for a long time. But I might just be cynical.
All that being said, if they don't release the Vyronii decals soon I am going to go insane.
I want my new Tau titan that they hinted at in lore and out but granted it sounded far off. I want my tau super heavy tank, and it would be a nice cherry on top to get an updated Manta.

Secutarii are a new branch of the Taghmata army list. Can never have automata in the detachement; big focus on infantry and transports.
Secutarii Psiloi, fast attack.
Secutarii Hetairoi, elite.
Secutarii Hypaspists, elite.
Secutarii Heleposis, open topped transport (20 capacity).
Cybernetica has new options.
Vidrios Caster Array, upgrade for Cybernetica HQs that allows counting as psyker.
Psy-Conduit upgrade, models gain FNP/FNP++ if a psyker is within 24"
Zetiark, female archmagos who developed with the Thousand Sons the crystalline circuits needed to control automata.
Thousand Sons
Sekhmet Terminators, elites that must pick a singular cult that radically alters their behaviour and/or statline.
Seshat Veterans, infiltrators tasked with securing artifacts and assassination from behind enemy lines.
Cataphraktos Psy-Automata, troops that a psyker within 24" must harness a WC to activate them until next turn.
Space Wolves
Hirdmen Veterans, fast attack with optional jump pack, combat shields and tons of melta/plasma weapons.
Varangian Great Guards Terminators, elites with two-handed great weapons or sword & board in the style of firedrakes.
Despoilers (Destroyers), elites with jump packs and fully equipped with smaller rad weapons.
Oh! Interesting sounds very mech to me
Amazing. Now that it's on faeit and B&C I can say it's me. Objective completed, sorry 4chan but you were the best way to test if the usual suspects were still slowed or not. And that dipsheit at B&C says "my source" holy sheit.
FYI I took the SW stuff from a Heresy30k thread wishlisting. In fact, I screwrf up with the Wolf Guard and someone here said Varangians, so I went with that in the "updated version". Feel free to compare.
All of the Secutarii stuff is just me looking up what a Peltast is and grabbing various fancy terms that vaguely fit. Siege towers are sweet though, but I forgot the triaros is already 20 capacity and made this one open topped. lol.
I love how some people go "hmmmmm this reminds me of what I heard elsewhere, must be true!" no +SCRAPSHUNTERRORABORT+, fw already said that one of the ts units will be psyker assassins and sw get a variant of destroyers (and I screwed up on the naming).
Well, yes, but I meant more the people authoring these hoaxes.

Yeah, Imperial Fists and Blood Angels. Cataphractii don't get Rotor Cannons, these are assault cannons for those legions, and the Storm shields are for Imperial Fists.

How is it the Imperial Fists get their storm shields first? The Salamanders had rules for the Dragonscale pattern before the IF got rules for the Vigil pattern. As a highly biased Salamanders fan I demand a re-trial! On a brighter note, that Custodes Contemptor is fething mouth-watering...

What are you talking about? You have your stormshields already. Just look at your specific terminators.
Rules for using the Legio Custodes Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnought in Legio Custodes armies in Horus Heresy games can be found in the forthcoming book The Horus Heresy Book Seven: Inferno.
So, I guess, HH Weekender it is. Which means, it's getting closer to Cyraxus
I'm wondering about rules for the Dreadnought. The description says that it's better than a normal contemptor in a number of ways, including having heavier armor. Could this be a front armor 14 Dreadnought? Or is that simply referring to a better invulnerable save?
Also, it would have at least WS6, initiative 5, and 6 attacks.
Yeah, very tempting. It might actually be a viable walker.
In any case, they look really nice, although it is a bit weird that they're so sleek and plain while the Custodes themselves are so ornate. Makes me wonder whether they were originally designed to go together.
Too bad I don't play 30K and don't much care for Custodes. Hmm... Pallas might make a good counts-as Javelin attack speeder, perhaps?
Did FW ever publish any rules for taking their SM vehicles on Deathwatch? I think that Pallas would look amazing in DW colours...

Sorry Pallas is Custodes only. It's part of their "codex" after all. As for vehicles I think they did, though I'm not sure.

Granted, but I can pretty much bet you that the Vigil shields will come as a shields only pack, to enable customisation of any Terminator pattern. If I wanted the Salamanders ones, I'd have to buy a whole Firedrake set at £49, unlike the Phalanx Warder and Templar Brethren upgrade sets for IF at £22 each or the Praetorian Breacher shields for the UM at £20. See what I'm getting at. To just get the shields and hammers, I'd have to pay double the price and end up with only half the product being usable. The Firedrakes are the Legion Specific troops, but the Vigil shields are Legion specific wargear, what I was trying to get at 'Where is the Salamanders Legion specific wargear?'. Anyway, it's not that important - I'm sure FW will get around to it.
The other grav vehicle is transport, at new year open day there was a 2nd spear armed contemptor, so I'd say so - will be in inferno along with sisters.

It had better be overpowered! Custodes basic troops cost 55 points per model minimum, the tank we've seen so far is 195 in it's pdf and no way are these Contemptors less than 250. With that little board prescence and ability to supply massed firepower, the list needs to be really good at it's areas of strength to stand a chance.
Horde tactics with a decent quantity of anti-vehicle options is likely to hard counter a Custodes list.
Sooooo, when are we gonna get something that isnt 30k related? Like more stuff for the other races? I would love to see some IG stuff, not Solar Auxilia, but actual IG. Or maybe the DE? Or some Ork or Necron stuff?
Cause im getting tired of it TBH,

I know what you mean. Come on Iron Hills Goat Riders!
Well, unless Tau have something to be released, the next book is fires of cyraxus.
You know, the book that's bringing 30k admech forward into 40k, some updated SM stuff, probably a red scorpions Gladius and SM formations for the FW stuff. And Tau as well. with all of that, I might need to stop holding my breath on the SM updates I dream of.
No, the big transport one.
I'm hoping we get Constantin Valdor and maybe the Meridian Blades for the Custodes
This one?
it has a really detailed interior, the floor even has a fur rug! I was told capacity is going to be 10 or 12 Custodies.
here is the back of the other large skimmer for comparison:
I'm expecting a couple of named characters including Valdor, jet bikes and terminators. I know a Leviathan is planned as well if they sell enough Contemptors.
Looky Likey wrote: it has a really detailed interior, the floor even has a fur rug!
Seriously?
Yup, the interior is at least as detailed as the Mastodon. I can't find a decent shot of the Corunus Grav Carrier's rear to show off it's interior but instead its a blatant opportunity to show off my Mastodon interior.

Where is this schedule published. I could not see it on www.forgeworld.co.uk
Automatically Appended Next Post: Did anybody else see the Adeptus Titanicus participation game listed in the bottom right?

Does Dakkadakka do a single event thread for the Weekender?
We've done it both ways in the past, but if there's enough news it might merit its own thread! Ideally we just want to keep it organized, so if a stand alone thread is created, avoiding duplicating conversation both here and there (so we should link to it here, if we go that route, or just keep all the news here - but ideally not both!).
I do 't suppose anyone has any clue/hints/rumours as to when Mighty Zug (Blood Bowl) might be hitting the FW store...? I know he was sold at the open day on 2nd Jan - had hoped he might have seen general release by now.

Via Lexicanum.
So are Forge world making an Imperator titan then?
Every time there is a post I keep hoping it's the Cataphractii cannons and shields up for order. They'really the things keeping me from finishing my two sets.
That’s right folks, feast your eyes on the cover of The Horus Heresy: Book Seven – Inferno.
Arguably the most anticipated Forge World book since the launch of our Horus Heresy supplements, Inferno is the campaign book that chronicles the epic battle of Prospero.
This is the saga of the Space Wolves and Thousand Sons Legions – two loyal(ish) Legions set upon each other by the machinations of Chaos and the traitorous Warmaster. It is one of the greatest tragedies of the era, but for Horus Heresy fans, one of the most awesome opportunities for games!
As you’d expect, there are loads of new rules for Space Wolves and Thousand Sons armies – both of which can deviate quite considerably from the standard Space Marine Legion force. It’s not just the VI and XV Legions in the book though – also covered are the Talons of the Emperor: the Sisters of Silence and Legio Custodes. Even in an age of superhuman demi-gods, this force is elite, with access to loads of great vehicle support for their unequaled infantry.
All in – it’s looking great, it’s going to be awesome, and it’s on its way very soon.
If you’re thinking of starting a force from either Legion, or the Talons of the Emperor, then you can’t do much better than the Burning of Prospero box – and maybe a few Thousand Sons or Space Wolves shoulder pads. Oh, and one of those new golden Dreadnoughts. And Russ. And a Spartan. There you go – army finished, now you just need the book.
Ordo sinister? Perhaps early Inquisition? No way its the titan legion. Unless you pretend they are you. A costume maybe? Or odd templates you pay points to drop on enemies from off table ala Orbital Bombardment
.
Kidding aside what could the ordo sinister be? it won't be a 8000$ 200lb resin divorce declaration.
Can't wait to see the TS rules, I really hope they capture the different psychic disciplines of the Legion properly in the rules. The SW should be easy by comparison.
We've seen about half the Custodies units by my reckoning, but we haven't seen anything new for the SoS yet, I hope they get more models as well.
Dunno if anyone saw the news yet, but the cover image of Inferno does reveal a new type of custodes infantry. Simply wielding some kind of bolter and a new helmet design. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw these revealed during the HH weekender.

The chap on the bottom left of the cover?
Spoiler:
While that could be a new model of the bolter-wielding Custodes chaps from the artwork (e.g.:

...I think it's more likely that he's simply a Space Wolf space marine. The legs look Mark III to me, and the overall silhouette looks too similar to a marine.
Do you want to create digital models that will be turned into new Specialist Brands products?
Are you excited by the opportunity to develop an idea from concept to finished product in a creative and collaborative environment?
We’re looking for an enthusiastic designer who can realize ideas using digital design software, for example, Solidworks or Zbrush.
You will need to be adaptable to the brief, work together with other designers and turn ideas into valuable products for the Specialist Brands team.
You will be responsible for creating exciting new resin models using C.A.D. that are complementary and consistent to Games Workshop’s intellectual property.
You will need to work to a given brief and meet scheduled deadlines enthusiastically in a design team environment, the Specialist Products Studio.
You must be able to turn your designs into products that can be easily reproduced by manufacturing.
Working at Games Workshop
At Games Workshop we are looking for people who will do their best to understand the needs of the company and to put those needs first when they are at work. Because of this we believe that what you are like, hence the attitude you show to work and the way you choose to behave is even more important than your skills or experience.
Other Essential Information
Closing date: Applications must be received by midnight, UK time, on Sunday 12th February 2017.
This will involve sculpting for Blood Bowl and ..future..spec.game releases.
How did you know it was Blood Bowl, reds8n? The mention of SolidWorks (which is much more suited to inorganic models) made me think of Adeptus Titanicus / BFG / etc. Although, they mentioned Zbrush too which is really best for organics, so maybe they're just hoping for the perfect candidate... with the right attitude, of course (I actually think working at FW is probably a blast, just funny they have to copy/paste that part)

The dude in the front left corner? I can't tell if he is LC or not. The guy in the middle has normal spear setup. Am I missing someone?
Indeed he is LC not PA marine. Look at his neck protection and bolt gun looks fancy on zoom.

Well look at the scale of the figure compared to the custodian guard to the right of the vehicle. Plus the left shoulderpad is almost a dead giveaway, and the neck guard is near identical if not 100% identical to the plastic custodes. All FW has released up until now has been custodes vehicles/transfers/dreadnought so it's no surprise they had at least one infantry variant (a shooty one) in the making. I'm betting on them being pretty badarse when we finally see them.
Loopstah wrote: So it looks like after being temporarily out of stock for weeks the Lucius drop pod has vanished from the store.
That is realy surprising TBH. Forgeworld pushs the model realy hard, since it's the only pod allowed to drop contemptor dreads everyone loves. They even listed it as being able to drop their new siege dreads. Due to their popularity, I figured that boosted the number of Lucius pods they sold.

Maybe GW is doing a plastic Dreadnought drop pod instead of plastic sisters.

It's almost as if it was a massively up priced dreadnought easily proxyable by just not putting the gun into a regular dread and ignoring it being a little smaller.
Thank you for the email. Unfortunately the dreadnought drop pods you are after are no longer in production.
Due to extensive damage to the moulds the resins team rendered the kits irreparable. whilst we look in to the situation further we have not been given any indications on a new kit being produced or if they are going to try and re sculpt the the current kit that has recently been removed from the range.
What we do know is that It is very rare that once an item has been discontinued that it will be brought back into our range at least in its previous form.
So I got a high res version of the Weekender schedule from Forge World.
Also, awesome email response from them...
Greetings Lord Astartes,
The forge is humbled by your request, after contacting the high lords of terror we are pleased to inform you that protocol 274T-e97 has been granted and we are permitted to share the documents you requested for viewing.
Please find attached the sacred scrolls of time keeping for the Horus Heresy Weekender though be warned these documents must not fall into the hands of the heretics for dark things can occur once in the wrong hands!
Again my lord we are most blessed by your communications and thank you for your time

It could be the case that the master was also damaged/destroyed. Sometimes things are temporarily unavailable with "remaking the molds" as the reason, so presumably they can make new molds if necessary. And I can't imagine they'd be stupid enough to deliberately throw out all of the masters as general policy, would they?
Has anyone heard anything about fires of cyraxus? I've been on the edge of my seat for what feels like forever waiting for it and it feels like its gone cold.

No, we need at least another 2 versions of Horus and Guilliman before we get Dorn.
And I finally figured out why the next IA book is delayed. They had to redo the entire run so they could change Adeptus Mechanicus to Aedeptys™ Maechanycys™. How did I not think of that earlier!
Dramagod2 wrote: Has anyone heard anything about fires of cyraxus? I've been on the edge of my seat for what feels like forever waiting for it and it feels like its gone cold.
Delayed until Inferno is sorted and released. Once Inferno has been taken care of, I reckon that we'll see a build up to a release in the second half of 2017...
I thought we already got the build up to fires of cyraxus with all the Tau releases we had for a while, as well as the Titan guard skitarii.
Though, I suppose they have leviathan Culln to release as part of it, and some more red Scorpions upgrades if I remember right, since everyone has cheap access to mark 4 now.
And yes, just checked, the Goblin and Halfling referees are gone. Would'a been nice to get them and Zug at the same time, but I guess FW only wants some of my money rather than all of it.

I NEED Leviathan Culln
Maybe Loth will get a 7th ed Rules Update? (I swear to god if they nerf his 2++...)
They will make it something you actually have to cast, even if it only costs one warp charge.
Considering he already gets to pick invisibility and has artificer armour, if they don't nerf him a hurt a straight up better* Tigurius. He even comes with an ap2 weapon!
*Tigurius is better if he gets the powers he wants, since he can reroll for days.

If anyone is interested in these, I recommend that you get them soon. The other day I found out that the WE dice are marked "no longer available." When I asked FW about them (because to my knowledge they weren't supposed to be limited), they explained that they want to get more but were having some issues with the manufacturer. I suspect they'll return eventually, but who knows when that will be. It's possible that these are from a different manufacturer, but if not...might want to move soon so you aren't in limbo like me.

Something feels off about those wolf sculpts in their proportions and poses. I can't quite put my finger on it but they just remind me of those 3rd party thunderwolf models people would order from the Philippines back when they were introduced in the Space Wolf 5th edition codex instead of the quality in sculpting that I'd expect to see from the HHFW line.

He's got the 2+ already and can pick powers straight up. That's already worth the price of admission.

No its just RAW it says "At the Start of your turn, Discard a Warp Charge blah blah blah" which is impossible, as there is now a Psychic phase and all warp charge is discarded at the end of turn
RAI for 7th is just sacrifice a warp charge point (you roll a 4, pick up 3) for the 2++
Really not liking the wolves.
Great concept, but they don't look right and I feel that £50 of that price is for fancy bases.
The thunderwolf cavs are plastic, 3 per box and half the price.
And by the looks of it, the same size if not slightly bigger, plus the benefit of being plastic, no delivery charge etc.
Hell, for £14 less you get a custodes dreadnought.
For £10 more you get a custodes grav tank.
Pricing just seems insane on them, and that's not something I complain about atall.
I can even buy a Thanatar for my army for £5 more lol.
Will be interesting to see if it's just those 2 as a HQ choice or if you can buy more of them.
Or if it's a unique or generic HQ.
If it has something like a 2-6 unit size you could be paying a small fortune lol.

Thanks for sharing that, sir. Was just thinking about getting one of these the other day after our game. Oh well.
Are the plastic Thunderwolf models similar sized to the Wolf-Kin? They seem similar from what I can see on the websites, but I've never seen the Thunderwolves in person.
I like the Wolf-Kin but not enough to pay that much when I can use cheaper plastic for them. Plus I really am not a fan of the Thousand Sons on the bases. Doesn't make sense to me as game pieces.

Agreed. They look... chunky. Not sleek enough.
They kind of look like they started with bears, but added a wolf head and tail. I think they've tried to make them look more powerful than a typical wolf (even though they are already giant, Primarch sized wolves), so they've bulked them out, but then that has made them look less wolfy.

Seconded. I think I actually prefer Kabuki's take on Russ and his wolves.
Wow, that Kabuki model is indeed a nice alternate take
For the FW wolves, what bothers me most is the very static-looking marines on the bases... particularly the one falling over. Hopefully those are separate bits, but even so, as someone else said it does feel like you're paying for the basing... and I think it's too "specific" of basing, as well (to see every Russ and wolf combo out there have the same marine getting slain in the exact same pose).
Still, I'm a fan of Russ, although I think I'd go for a headswap to make him look a little more hardened / tough
warboss wrote:Something feels off about those wolf sculpts in their proportions and poses. I can't quite put my finger on it...
I can. It's because they bear little relation to actual wolves in their proportions. The limbs might be thicker to look like they carry the weight of huge wolves, but if that's the case it ain't working. There are big animals with legs that don't look anywhere near as clunky - look at moose, or giraffes, or carthorses. The legs on these sculpts are just... flabby sausages, with vague lines along the thighs to say 'there are muscles here, no really' and a slight kink at the hock. There are vague bulges along the shins, which might be there to represent extra superheroish muscularity, but wolf legs don't work like that. I get what Haighus is saying about bear legs, but they're an insult even to bears! Sorry to say, but the legs - especially the forelegs - of the new AoS hippogryph are closer to wolf legs than these things. It's that bad.
The paws are nothing like wolf paws, and not especially convincing as the hands of super-soldiers transformed into wolf monsters, if that's what Freki and Geri were. (I haven't kept up with the details of HH fluff.) I'm looking at the curled-up paw of the grey wolf and I think 'what'. If I'm pushed, I'd say they look more like puffy duck feet with a kink in the toes. But actually, they're the same kind of lazy representation of a paw that's been put on WHFB wolves (and things like the mordheim bear and high elf lions) for decades.
The pose of the legs - and the whole of the bodies - are stiff, and dull. So duuullllll. I almost fell asleep looking at them. It's quite an achievement when your subjects are giant wolves leaping at enemies in battle. The forelegs are supposed to be clawing at the 1k Sons and the hindlegs are stepping forward, maybe even leaping. But there's absolutely no tension or stretching to indicate that. Maybe not entirely surprising since there seems to be no real muscle modelled on these figures; but the forelegs just seem to be pointing at the 1K Sons (no bending or splaying of the toes to indicate the marines are being raked by the claws) and the hindlegs are... just there. Like I say, no flexing or stretching. Both hindpaws solidly planted on the base. No dynamism.
The face. Glossing over the 'angry eyes', the expression of the snarling faces are vacant. Dead. Like grecian masks or something. Part of this is because, while I can see lines in the face of the brown wolf, facial muscles - like leg muscles - are more than just 'lines', and need a bit more attention than that. Especially if you're charging seventy bleedin' quid for it. Do an image search for snarling wolves and see how much the muzzle and lips can (or should) be lifted and bunched. In particular, the corners of the mouths of these sculpts slope and droop way down, more than they should for a tensed, snarling expression. Compare the mouths - and the whole face - to thesephotos. Might be subtle, in the eyes of some, but it's there.
What's worse is, those photos make it plain that the teeth of the sculpts follow the line of those droopy mouths. The teeth line the lips, not the jaws of the skull!
And the tongues are sticking out. Look at that first wolf photo again. It's another giveaway of something...
The other part is that both wolf faces have that same jaws-open-to-the-uttermost-extent look, despite being in relatively different poses and presumably at different points in the 'jump and savage' cycle. It's like the 'always roaring' trope that gets complained about in dinosaur art. It contributes a lot to the dead mask effect, IMO.
So. Unnatural flabbiness in place of muscle, skin and other anatomy. Dull poses. Decades-old, unrealistic GW tropes. Droopy mouths despite extreme-gape snarls, plus wonky teeth and a waggly tongue. Well, they're not reptiles, but I still smell Carden. Possibly Morrison, but more likely Carden.
The Kabuki model does look great... but it doesn't look like Russ. It is a great space roman general with viking iconography, but Russ should be a space viking chieftain.

I agree with this. The thing about some of the differences being subtle, is that they all add up to the whole thing looking off. Subtle is important, it is the same reason that people who have had too much plastic surgery look off.

There's alternative components actually if you do want a more bare headed viking look.
They're down to the last couple of the run for Russ though, so they won't be available much longer. I snapped mine up a few days back. Pricey but I feel it'll be resellable in a few years if I never get around to painting it, on account of the fact that it's actually a better sculpt than the FW one!
Most of Kabuki's Knights aren't that great, but alongside the Russ I always thought their Corax gave the FW one a run for their money.
Anyone complaining that they don't look exactly like Wolves is missing the point in that they're not actually Wolves to begin with.
Anyone seen that cover of Prospero Burns? Definitely not Wolves.

Yes, the Kabuki ones look more like normal wolves proportion wise, but I never imagined Russ to run with two normal wolves myself.
I was beginning to think I was the only one that thought this way !
The Kabuki ones have metal exo-skeletons sticking out...not too much like normal wolves. I pretty much hate all of the GW current Space Wolf aesthetic though, so I've no real dog in the fight.

Couldn't resist - sorry!
I like FW's Russ, I love Kabuki's Russ and I don't really mind either set of 'wolves'.

As I'll point out any time this point is used, the "factual" justifications are irrelevant if it looks wrong to the eye. You're quite right, these aren't Canis Lupus, they're Canis Fenris, and they're almost certainly unusual physical specimens of those.
However, if the net result of the sculpt is they look like "off" wolves then none of it matters.

One - you didn't read my post. I know it's a bit long, but still.
Two - this:

It's an old excuse for sub-par fantasy/sci-fi sculpting. It's not that they're not real, let alone real wolves, but that they don't look like organic, naturally moving creatures.
References for something wolf-like (i.e. wolves) isn't hidden away, or mythical, or difficult to make use of. Look at Gamezone's wolf riders, for example. Even GW's thunderwolves and fenrisian wolves - the same kind of 'not real wolves' - manage to look better than these FW models. If you want to emphasise their weird human origin, like the faces on the cover of Prospero Burns (which is all we can see of them, and not entirely relevant to current complaints) then DnD's barghests or Reaper's goblin wolves show a route. (I don't think the Reaper minis are particularly well sculpted either, but they show a concept for not-wolves other than 'don't care') Even the man-eating sheep from the LotR movies are obviously not wolves, but manage to look like real creatures.

I'm going to say you're being pedantinc in this matter, considering they are Fenrisian Wolves.

They aren't Wolves though. They're alien lifeforms that are reminiscent of Wolves. Huge difference.

That's what they are in the more recent BL fluff... but those models are simply just badly sculpted and posed supersized wolves. If you want a look at alien lifeforms that are reminiscent of wolves, take a look at Infinity's Antipodes (namely the middle one in this pic).
The FW don't even look like the BL cover ones and are different for all the wrong/worse reasons from actual wolves. No, sorry, those models are just plain badly sculpted (for FW) wolves.

Thanks for the detailed rundown and for putting into words most of my vague hard to explain issues with the models.

Seconded. I think I actually prefer Kabuki's take on Russ and his wolves.
Spoiler:
I do like both that Russ and his wolves (and the wolves more than the official ones). Russ himself is a bit too technobarbarian for me personally (he feels more like an artic thunderwarrior than a primarch to me) but that just could be the lack of a proper ranged weapon. I'd still be leaning towards the official Russ by a bit though (moreso if the FW Russ' fur cape flowed a bit better than it does.. it's almost as stiff as a second edition Space Marine metal captain's cape)
commander dante wrote: Perhaps Combining Kabuki Russ with FW Russ' Head?

The armour is very reminiscent of a legionary for me too, not just the helmet. Looks like a nord officer in the Imperial legion in Skrim or something. Even with the bare head I still feel it makes a better Thunder warrior than a Russ.
Isnt Inferno supposed to drop in a few days- and we have zero actual rumors on the Space Wolves and 1K Sons army rules? Or is this a sign they are going to push it back yet again?
Forge World rules typically don't leak until someone gets it in their hands legitimately. There might be sales on Friday, but I'd be surprised to see anything before then. Most likely is probably Saturday morning. And even then the people with the book will be busy at the Weekender, so the leaks might be limited until Saturday evening.

Blimey, didn't even realise you posted pics. They didn't show up at all for me. I can only see them by quoting and sticking https on the front of the url. From the comments, I take it no-one else has this problem?
Anyways... yes. They look better. Thighs are a bit long maybe, but then that's another way you could imply a human origin.

Personally that's why I love the Kabuki one, it looks like a mashup between MK4 power armour and one of the Nord sets from Skyrim. The FW Russ has always been a bit meh for me, not because it's bad but just because there are lots of teeny little niggles I have with it personally that make it hard to justify the price(the face looks more like he's having a really unpleasant bathroom experience than snarling IMO, the cape is a bit stiff even accounting for the pose, and the pose itself almost has too much "motion" in it - I can see what they were going for, but feet, knees, torso, head, and arms all at different angles just looks odd to me), so thanks for the link & pics to that Ketara, I'd never have noticed that in time to get the helmeted version if you'd not brought him up
(as a cheeky aside, I actually don't particularly care for the Kabuki wolves and will probably use a couple of Thunderwolves for mine, so if anyone wants to buy the Kabuki ones off me when mine arrives shoot me a PM)
I've been buying and getting ready to start my thousand sons . I'm happy I got into 30k at the right time . My wallet is ready ! All is not yet dust !!
Not sure if anyone here follows frontline podcast but they said forgeworld would be at the lvo. They implied there would be something for sale there for the first time in NA and maybe a reveal. Not sure on the reveal they were real tired and he kinda misspoke.

That might be the least informative information posted in this thread in quite some time - congrats!

FW? At an event?
I'm shocked!
If I had to guess, they'll have Inferno for sale there since it also goes for sale at the Horus Heresy Weekender this weekend.
What we up to now? 2023? Now, we can't end a Forgeworld "Where is it?" thread without mentioning the Vyronii Transfers. Though, we can't annoy BrookM anymore ever since the Medics were released

EDIT:
Hey kronk - maybe it's...
...wait for it...
...DORN!
They were extremely tired from marathon painting terrain for the LVO and basically double shifting it for weeks and still had to go to the LVO itself. I'm not sure Reece might have let it slip and tried to cover up the reveal, or he might have just made a mistake and said there was only something coming to NA that had not been here before. I'm not sure which way to run with that information either. You can watch the latest signals from the frontline to decide for yourselves.
Wasn't there supposed to be a IA book that would bring the Mechanicum stuff in 40K or am I imagining things? I remember hearing it coming 'soon' ages ago.

Sometime after Inferno. I think it was fairly close to completion, but they wanted all hands on deck to finish Inferno.

My sources say Dorn and Vyronii transfers sometime after they work through the Remembrancer Character Series.

I wonder if Inferno will mention the Prospero Spireguard? They show up quite a bit in the two Prospero books. Would be nice to get at least some artwork if not a few models for them. Guess it depends on how well the Solar Aux sold
Tempted to buy the book for the artwork and fluff alone, those few pages make it look like it's going to be very pretty!

Presuming the new edition of 40K will be any good.
Personally if they're going to AoS up the place I'd rather they give me all my Mechanicus toys in a format I can use with the current rules or at least easily tweak to fit a more sane edition(since if they do AoS up the place and the community splits again, I'd be as well going back to playing a set of rules from when GW actually remembered how to write them).
I can't imagine they're going to risk mucking up 40k. I want to actually get games in, so the latest ruleset is the way to go for me. Fingers crossed that Rountree continues his positive trend and they do a good job of it!
