I've recently had the itch to paint some Black Templars. I don't know if it's the Gathering Storm stuff, the desire to paint a different scheme, or just because I hate the psychic phase so much, but I started working on some of these guys. I did up a few test models, namely a pair of Sword Brethren, an Initiate, and their Marshall, Siegward:
Next, I've got a stack of 10 Initiates and Helbrecht on the painting table, and plenty to go. The idea behind this army is to get as many of the bits and kits I've had lying around forever and put them to use in a coherent army. Of course I ended up buying a few Tactical squads and Black Templar accessory sprues, but hey, I had to start somewhere, didn't I?
I finally got around to painting the 30th anniversary Marine, and I did him up in the old Field Police colors:

It's all practice and cleanup! I've found that going back and tidying up highlights is what really takes models up a level.

This is exactly what I found too. It's still a lot of work though! This is what makes me happy I picked the army where every model is hilariously expensive points wise.

The concept for this army is largely to just clear out the bits and kits I've got lying around that I've never put to good use. That means they'll be getting an assault squad, at least two more tactical/Crusader squads, some Sword Brethren (vanguard veterans - I've got both the Sword Brethren models and metal GW veterans), the command tank set from Warhammer World, and a few characters. Once I get through some of that stuff I'll look into giving them a Stormraven, and I'd really like to give them a Dreadnought based on the Forgeworld one or the old BT Dreadnought conversion that's in the old Codex: Armageddon.

Thanks guys! The yellow weapons idea comes from the old John Blanche Black Templars piece on the front of the 3rd ed rulebook, which has always been one of my favorite pieces. I also don't want to go too over the top on Templar bits for each dude, so I've tried to keep it tasteful.

Post by: Brother SRM
Nope! It's just the stock plastic Terminator Chaplain you can get at store openings. I've got the Terminator Captain from one as well, although he's still in his blister.
My real question with Chaplains is who are they scaring? That skull mask isn't scaring anybody except for a rebel Guardsman or maybe a Grot, who frankly shouldn't be a problem for a Space Marine anyway.

These are some great looking Black Templars, and as you say, tidy highlights can take a model very far. That Sergeant model with the Power Axe takes me way back.
One piece of 'personal opinion' offered as 'constructive criticism'? I don't like the chapter markings on the Scout helmets - for seem reason its completely breaks the immersion of looking at these and makes me ' BT's recruiting Mexican Wrestling Stars now?'.
Like I said, my personal opinion, feel free to completely ignore me
15115
Post by: Brother SRM
See now, that makes me want to do them even more! Space Luchadores is a concept that needs to be explored now.
Stylistically, I drew from the Black Templars art for them, which has a lot of crosses painted over helmets. I'm going to be doing something similar on my Primaris Marines. Different strokes, but glad you're enjoying the thread!

Black Templars armor? Nice. Looks pretty good! Got to imagine half the driver's job is stopping the guys inside from breaking down the doors and running out the hatches to hit the nearest living thing with their chainswords too early. The Emperor's Champion is pretty good too. Are you going to do a Land Raider for these guys? Getting a Land Raider Crusade seems almost too obvious for the Templars.

I have a set of the Warhammer World command tanks, and I was figuring I'd use those for this army. The Crusader is too iconic not to include, but one shoebox tank at a time

Nice stuff. To bad bikes squads can’t mix like crusader squads, that would be a lot of fun.
Of the 4 land speeders I’ve assembled, I’ve yet to build the “new” one. The last one I built wasn’t that bad, but at the time I was building it I has significantly more time in the hobby then the first 2 (which were built in 3rd)
You have a critical mass of these guys to hit the table? Quite the force shaping up.

Oh man, that would be cool! Doing a second bike squad of Marines to roll nearby them would be sort of the same, but they couldn't quite keep pace with them. I last built the old Land Speeder in 4th edition, so maybe I have the hobby skills/emotional maturity to actually survive building one of those things now
And according to my roster sheet, I have 2739 points of these guys painted up now!

If Boreale can rock it, I can probably do alright. And thanks! The weathering is simple, and what I usually go for: Some real quick sponge chipping with Necron Compound, a drybrush of Steel Legion Drab, then a drybrush of Karak Stone.

Thanks! The dirt is just a successive drybrush of Steel Legion Drab and Karak Stone, nothing complicated! I work it into the recesses more than I would with a normal drybrush.
The heads on the Neophytes and Cherub are from the Warriors of Chaos set from Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar - I took their helmets and shaved off the horns.
kavika0311 wrote:Awesome stuff! Where does that Techmarine’s pack come from? Or is it just an insane kitbash?
It's a combination of the heavy flamer backpack from the Sternguard kit, the servo arm from the Tactical Squad missile launcher, a hubcap from the old biker wheels sprue, and the loading lugs from an Admech Kataphron kit.
