Beginning -
My friend and I just got started on a large 6x8' cities of death table. We have mostly just gotten the pink a blue foam levels down. I have been saving up a lot of scenery over the years and we have some pretty cool stuff to work with. The table will have a lot of elevated roads, 7-8 large buildings, a fortress wall with gate, multiple levels, a canal down the middle, a large courtyard, bridges, a large bastion connected to the city wall, a manufactorum, two landing pads and a large cathedral as the focal point.

Here are some pictures of the first building. These are all old forge world destroyed buildings they don't sell anymore. We really don't wont a lot of destroyed buildings so we decided to put them all into one. You'll see we had to shave down the foam some to make them level with each other and also began carving the foam to match the brick floor pattern. hoping to add some stairs and other pillars soon

Tunnels! Tunnels are the best thing and you have done them wonderfully here. I... really like tunnels on boards like this, you don't see them too often.

We did some work on the cathedral towers using pink foam and the back side of the shrine of the aquila panels. Also decided to raise the hill it will be sitting on to give it a slightly higher base than the raised roads.

Also tried carving stairs. They don't look so great. I think we are going to have to apply plaster to most of the items we are carving out of pink foam. I don't know how everyone else get such good results just using the foam

Very nice. Just in time for Shadow War.

Fifty, my more skilled carving partner on this project used a razor at first for the steps then moved to a dermal with a cutting tool. We used a hot styrofoam knife on some parts of this but I don't think it's very easy to manage or city straight with

Brilliant! This is looking like it's going to be a dream to play on! What about added ambitiousness and creating a removable bridge across the canal which can be destroyed by a squad for example if they have a melta bomb (or equivalent)?
Will be monitoring this thread...
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Great idea! We really don't know how we are going to make the two bridges across the canal yet. Original one was supposed to be destroyed but I don't know now. Trying to convince my building partner that we should add a third table in between the existing two and make the canal a river

We started work on the imperial bastion and city wall last night. Mostly just foam core right now to get the frame strong enough to hold the weight. We will add all of the plastic and plaster details later. The building will have three levels including a motor pool basement, barracks on the middle floor and a two story command center as the top interior level. Tower will provide troops direct access to city wall and has a Aquila strong point with canon as the top/roof.

Not much progress this weekend. Only foamcore work on the city wall and supports for the roads.
Some idea of how the roads will look on this side of the canal
And a little layout work for the bastion
Oh and we got a huge box from forge world. What could it be?
The MARINE CASTELLUM STRONGHOLD. Which we are hoping to use as part of the landing port. Unfortunately it's really big and hard to incorporate. Might need to cut it down some
21480
Post by: btoliver311
I win. The canal is now a river! Also spent most of this weekend reinforcing the tables themselves. The particle board was curving way too much on the sides
And also a silly picture of my siege tower attacking the city wall

Very ambitious project! How does all that plaster and foamboard work for durability though?
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Hey Redemption,
I think you are like the 4th person to call our project "ambitious" which is concerning .
In regards to the stryafoam, it's mostly just a base structure and very well reinforced. The dental plaster is also very strong, though we've had some issues with really thin pieces breaking when we are grinding or sanding them to fit. Your question is making me consider the risks of the large flat surface (like roads and courtyards) areas that were supposed to get covered in plaster. Those could have a higher probability of cracking. I'll need to look into that some more
Thx

Not a huge fan of laser-cut stuff because it still looks really flat once painted but some pieces here and there help. This is one of a few companies we are trying out. The walkway already looks really good and I'm even more excited for the command table that we are going to light from underneath with LEDs

Started work on completing the cathedral. Doesn't look like much we actually did a ton of work. All of the Pegasus hobby pieces had to be ground down to fit, the base had to be reinforced because the foam wasn't strong enough, level everything, made new stronger pillars out of wood trim and still there is tones of grinding and glueing to go.

Do you intend to put any interior walls in your large ruined building? Or a stairwell to suggest there's a way up to that level from the floors below?
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
THIS is awesome. You could (If you wanted) attempts to build a ZM-esque lower floor to the cathedral, with vaulted ceilings and reliquaries, maybe descending into dirt walled catacombs that have been there since before the Imperium came...
21480
Post by: btoliver311
@emberlord and @warboss
Yes and yes. There is an approximate 1' cubic area under the cathedral that will have caticomes, shrines, graves, stairs, etc. kind of like raiders of the lost arc I guess. In regards to the destroyed building, you're right we should have added stairs there as well but that might be too late. I think we may fake it with some doors. There will be a large staircase going down to the lower level right outside it though

Here are some shots on the beginning of the very very long paver project. These will be used for the floor in the catacombs as well as all the outside lover level walking paths and courtyards. They are cut from the cardboard that's found on the back of notebooks, glued down with wood glue and will have sand spread between the cracks to represent mortar. Idea taken from :

Making and using molds is messy work.
Tried a new mold product that is a brush on. Was supposed to help increase the amount coverage, instead just took 4 times as long, made a mess and then eventually ripped on the final mold.
Here's the slime project pics
Here are the two molds that worked. Not bad casts though.
The first road wasn't so good. Used a release agent on the second and it was much better

Had to take last weekend off but got back at it yesterday. This thing might be moving pretty slow but I think we can honestly say our bastion is bigger than yours.
The front door going in. Will still need a header and support pillars
A view from the back. The elevator still needs to be attached and the only room with completed walls is the barracks. The motor pool just has floors and the first level done. Command center walls are in but it still needs a catwalk and more wall sections

I find that with molded doors like that, I often have to buy two pieces. One for cutting out the door (and destroying it in the process) and another for the door itself (and damaging the rest of the piece in the process). Good luck to you.

We both had pretty hard workweeks so we didn't have much energy left for modeling. We basically just got through: sizing down the manufactorum 4" so it wasn't so deep and our alley was still playable, getting the door in, cutting out the FIFTEEN pieces needed for the first floor walls from the realms of battle board and the beginnings of the "smoke stack"?
This shadow war terrain is really cool but I literally need at least 16 more corner walkways. Hope this detail shows up ok in my crappy mold work
95627

Well, at least that doorway turned out great.
Who am I kidding, the whole thing is awesome! Can you have servitor ports, like in the FW titans, in your manufactorum?

21480
Post by: btoliver311
Added some of the interior and exterior facades to the manufactorum
Now to spend another weekend making casts
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Two of three molds are producing really good resins casts.
Unfortunately one entire mold is ruined. I'm not sure if it was due to the heat (I live in Phoenix, AZ) or if the second mix of silicon I had to pour in last minute wasn't mixed property but parts of the mold never cured. The whole thing had to be trashed
I also like how I'm so lazy I make recast of hirst arts stuff so I don't have to make as many individual pieces
61618
Post by: Desubot
Man i really need to do that my self. they don't make ovals or 50mm and i dont want to eat one of those plastic walkways :/
that sucks about the mold
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Yeah but it takes a lot casts for the math to even workout for these recast. Just make sure you run the numbers before putting in the time
61618
Post by: Desubot

infact i have a mold of that exact wall panel from those necromunda bulk heads

Ha, cool. Such a good piece once you get rid of those ladders, cardboard connectors, etc.
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Close to nothing to report. Spending all my time racking my brain about how I'm going to support the to landing pads once they are 20" off the ground. The design is essentially a tall "T" with an elevator up the middle (shadow war octagon. Small two piec as elevator, large 4 piece as surround) and two sky shields on either side at the top. However making this thing strong enough to support those without them having their own pillars is presenting a challenge. I purchased some old erector set pieces off eBay to use as support girders but I'm going to need a lot more if I'm going to go that route and I'm not sure if it's worth the $$$ to find out if they'll work or not.
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
These work well as support beams too:
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Are those evergreens I-beams? I just put in a big order last night to get pieces to cover all the gaps around the manufactorum but didn't get any I beams. I assumed that even 2 or 3 of the 3/8" wouldn't be strong enough to hold the weight of the 12" skyshield with a ship on it
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
Yep, those are evergreen. You're probably right about the weight, though. I guess if you used 20 or so it could work.

21480
Post by: btoliver311
Ding ding ding!
The monorail will go across the length of the board. From outside the city wall, through the manufactorum, across the river and to the landing tower.
I think they engine/cab is going to by based off an Arvus lighter.
The I'll copy the wings and make some flat bed cars

Awesome monorail! Nice to see this epic project continue. Where did you get those stairs going from the ground floor?
95627

Wait, you're using an Arvus for your monorail?! Doesn't that thing cost 50$?! I will expect at least 4 more when you get to the spaceport. Jokes aside, your manufactorum is absolutely awesome. It may very well be the most ambitious and beautiful 40k related thing I have ever seen.

Also are there any spray can options for these that would look good?

Automotive grey and black primers would probably be the easiest and cheapest. Make a TON of black and brown wash (there are tutorials all over) then pick out some details in silver bronze and copper to add color. Personally like the neutral white/grey scheme but thats just me.

White might work but I think I want to save the main white building for the fortress of redemption/senate conversion. Which I hope will look something like these

Anyone know anything about lego motors? I'm using these for the elevator on the landing tower. If it's not too hard I might motorize it. If not these will still make it easy to move up and down
113862
Post by: Grotrebel
Not really but you can still go for a manual version with some kind of winder.
Don`t know if they have enough power for your task? I just remember the ones i had but maybe the newer ones have more power.
Otherwise there should be plenty alternatives.
That multiple landing plattform is awesome!
If you go for a motorized elevator i expect a lot of LED`s too.
106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Yeah newer ones have plenty of power, especially compared to the old ones. I've got a little one powering a little home-made lego car through a 2-speed gearbox and a working differential which is a far amount of gear-related losses.
Could do with two mind you...
Absolutely love the idea though you can get two types I think, little ones which spin fairly quickly and bigger ones which have gear-reduction inside the motor so turn slower with more torque.
Personally, I'd go with the higher speed one and then do external gear reduction. Be cooler to see all of the gears spinning outside of the motor

How should these go? I was going to set them at an angle to see more elevator but don't like how much wood frame is showing
Option 2 puts 8 shadow war legs on each level covering things up more but I'm concerned it's too square now

Thanks guys. It's hard to stay motivated on this stuff. The compliments really help. Here's a short video showing the first attempt moving landing pad elevator up and down
So... uploading videos directly to Dakka doesn't work
Too bad about the video. Hopefully it works on desktop or I find a way to host it.
The question still remains: how do I motorize this thing?
What you're looking at is actually the top where the motors will go. As you can see there will be two gear boxes across from each other. This makes the turning mechanism opposite on each unit. I think I need to find a motor that is small enough to fit in between and turn both at the same time.
The battery pack will probably need to be on the top of the tower

Sunday fun day
The wings are for the extra mono rail cars, the arches will be for a spillway/smaller bridge, some attempts at stairs and of course the main point for the casts: more support beams for the tower.
Made a little more progress on the tower too

NO!!

They've stated it will have ONLY cardstock terrain to keep prices down. But if it's like the original Necromunda then cardstock is great. I'm sitting on 200+ bulkheads and 3-5 sets of the cardstock buildings plus all my stuff I've built over the years.
Will the control tower have flashing LED landing lights? With the monorail right there it could also use some lights in the bottom of the rail too.

Are you using an iPhone or iPad? If so it's the device being held differently and the system autocorrecting them.
Cool street and sidewalk. Is the sidewalk just squares of cork? Or something more elaborate?
21480
Post by: btoliver311
The side walk are the hirst arts molds from the starship deck.
http://www.hirstarts.com/molds/m270.pdf
Cork doesn't sound like a bad idea though.
Do you think I should raise the sidewalks or are they ok level with the street? I think if I leave them level if will make it easier for large vechiles
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
I'd leave them as-is. Sometime, when an army enters a city, they level the sidewalks to make it easier for supply transports and large tanks to move around. I'd imagine Imperial cities, that are designed for war like everything else in the imperium, would plan that out in advance.
21480

Post by: EmberlordofFire8
Speaking of painting, how are you going to undercoat? You can't use spray paint as it'll melt the styrofoam (let me say it again: DONT SPRAY PAINT STYROFOAM!!!), so will you airbrush it or just use a brush?
61618
Post by: Desubot
Well you could hard coat the foam in PVA, plaster or some other form of foam treatment. then spray paint it.
21480
Post by: btoliver311
i thought I saw on here somewhere there was a type of spray paint that doesn't melt styrofoam?

There are foam safe spray paints
though it might be easier to just get latex house paint, and go at it with a chip brush for better coverage.

While we are already talking about stuff (painting) that isn't going to get started for another thousand freaking years, what army do you think should defend our city?

A) pillars
B) tunnels

I finally figured out where the look I had stuck in my head for my planetary guard came from. I don't know if I said it out loud but I wanted guard that had military fatigues with some sort of midevial chest armor with the imperial Aquila or something on it.
Um...
I was thinking about Rouge trader guard from my childhood the entire time. Granted the helmets are awful, this is pretty close.
Does anyone know how well the scale holds up to current guard? Was thinking I'd figure out a way to get a bunch of the chest pieces and mix those in with standard Cadian Shock Troops legs and arms. Maybe different helmets still
Or maybe I was just thinking about any of these:
I've never built guard before. Is this a pretty common design? Does it represent rank?

Most normal guardsmen get flakk armor.
those chest pieces are usually for upper rank.
nothing stopping you from using those and making something even fancier for the upper rank.

What about scale?
Also is there anything anyone's seen in the normal warhammer range I could use that would look like these but maybe have different iconography? Like maybe a lion or something else that would represent the city or planet crest?

Thanks guys. I'm on holiday for a few weeks so I won't be getting anything done on the city. Just been thinking about our eventual defenders and what army might be attacking the city. Probably doesn't matter as most people will use their own but in my mind the inhabbitants are a very formal/religious planetary guard and the attackers will be some kind of medieval siege army meets dark mechanicus / traitor guard.
Those greatsword pieces are a good idea dirronjay. There are a few that I think could represent a different planet crest for sure
This plain one with a colored sash seems cool.
I agree with theophony too. The scions look exactly like what I'm describing and are the easiest choice. A while back i converted a few scions to try and make Templar neophytes. They are pretty close to what I'm going for now actually. I think the heads and spears work too. Might just need a helmet option that could mix in with the existing face grill

Yeah. What i Should have done is work on the two buildings that came off the table at my FLGS and Gained interest. Unfortunately those buildings (the manufactorum and landing pad) are pretty much done now.
Anyone have recommendations for easy rivits?
74210
Post by: Ustrello
A buddy of mine uses these rivets to good effect or brita filter beads
https://www.tichytraingroup.com/Shop/tabid/91/c/o_nbw-rivets/p/8076/Default.aspx
and they work with plastic glue
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
I have a really small hole puncher, which does something like 3mm holes, so I just take plasticard and punch a bunch of holes on it, empty the hole puncher, and voila! Tones of rivets.
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Ordered the leather punch thanks .
Couple more questions:
1) how should I deal with these screws? Should I remove them and hope the super glue is enough to hold the platform on the wood frame? Cover them with plasticard? Or would there be a way to use a small sodering tool to melt the heads and make them less pronounced?
2) which do you like better: the standard landing platform armored flaps with the gun slats (laying flat) or removing them and just using the rectangle backs? I don't really get why the platform would have gun ports.
Or
74210
Post by: Ustrello
Cover the screws with plasticard, the more stability the better.
113862
Post by: Grotrebel
Nice to see some progress here!
Would go for removing the gun slats and stay with rectangle backs.
As for the screws, i kinda like them, like bigass industrial screws.
You could also get some more lamps and clue them on top of the screws to cover them and get some additional light.
30672
Post by: Theophony
You could get the tow hook loops from guard vehicles to cover the screws as strap down points.
21480
Post by: btoliver311
These are all great ideas guys!
I'll try both the plasticard and strap hooks. If those end up sticking up too much I'll just leave them. As for the lights, I think someone was saying I should add lights that work with the lego battery so I might try that... might

There are boxes in both the rhino and landspeeder storm kits that should cover those screws. You could also use the smaller boxes from the armoires containers kit. That way it would look like cargo had been recently unloaded.

Dead bodies also work . You could magnetize some dead bodies from all the factions to swap out at each game.

We now have the beginnings of all 4 bridges accross the canal. 1 road, 1 monorail, the river level man bridge and another man bridge on the far side. There will be one more road version but it will be destroyed.
I hope these make for interesting play

This isn't going to be super fun to play on. It'll be awesome! Especially multi-player battles, with several players on each side. I'm just imagining one player defending the walls while the other one locks down the bridges.
How much does a plane ticket to where ever you are cost?!

That's what I'm thinking too. It will probably be set up in a two part game. First some sort of seige game, then a second game with one team defending from the other side of the river.
Like I stated before, I'm probably going to run a guard army with all those terrain cover saves but jump packs would be really helpful Automatically Appended Next Post: Speaking of which I just found out my final kit bash idea for my plannetary guard seems to have gone pretty main stream.
A pic of the pistolier heads I was going to use next to the standard ones:
And this image from the new codex;
Still might use the heads but I'm going to need more changes if I don't want them to look like Vinntrillian Nobles I guess.
That means theplan to mold and cast my own chest armor based upon the rouge trader guard models is happening
Still plan to "count as" Vostroyan and get access to "heirloom weapons" and the +6" to range

So this leather punch I got to make rivits is a pain
Every single one gets stuck in its barrel and I have to pop it out with a safety pin. Which is not so easy

Truly amazing and inspiring so far. The scale of this project is so massive. I hope you manage to finish it and paint it without burning out. I think it's incredible so far.

THE LINKS ARE BROKEN AGAIN!! NOOOOOOooooooooooo!

Post by: btoliver311
Not so much "burnt out" as overwhelmed withhout as much time as I would like. My project partner has been busy for the Last few months with an art project and my wife just had our second so I'm on constant dad duty. No more zone defense like we had with just 1 kiddo. I think if I start focusing on big stuff and move on from the things that are holding me up (working elevator im talking about you) I'll get through the funk. That and getting my back up back in November.
Also, What links are broken??
I put a couple of the Aquila torsos on the guard legs with the pistolero heads. I like it.
They work better than the tempestus ones IMO
What do you think of capes on all the soldiers or should i save them for sniper squads only?

Ultra flamboyant capes for everyone . If they are playing in this huge city and get fancy chest armor I don’t think the population would skimp on capes. Great work with the mold by the way.

Yeah. I like the capes too. I think it makes them kind of Roman soldierish
I have a few options:

Good thing a found another complicated way to do a project. Maybe they all don't get capes
But at least they're good to look cool and unique

Very nice PDF soldiers. How many are you planning to make? A whole regiment?

Post by: btoliver311
Probably around 1,000 points worth. Got some cool ideas for veterans, sentinel conversions and I'm trying to decide if I want use these as count as "rough riders " or not. They're a little big

Those riders are cool and very unique. And they seem more legitimate than riding giant wolves...
Keep up the good work! Take the time to be a good dad and raise some future warlords so you'll have gaming/painting buddies in a few years.

Ok. I'm totally aware I've let the PDF high jack the city thread and promise to get back to city stuff soon. I'm still casting and hope to work on all the bridges this weekend. I've started doing the taller arches in ressin because the plaster ones kept breaking. I'll use them for the last few tunnels and as the supports for the last walk bridge I put in over the canal.
Back to the PDF though, considering I want them to be "count as" vostroyan I think they probably need a different las gun variant that would fall into the heirloom fluff.
This is what the vostroyan las guns look like VS the basic ones that come in the plastic cadian kits.
What should I do to represent these? A) use sections on ad mec riffles and maybe some Copper tube for my mold
Or B) get some vostroyan minis and cut off the end of their riffle for a mold?

You could use the skitarii rifles, those are pretty ornate

There is always the option of getting a power sprayer.

Is there any reason I couldn’t use flat latex paint and a Big spray gun for some of the bigger sections and base coats?

Those big spray guns tend to lay it on thick. at least the electric kind.
i think
rent one and try it out

Great work! Can you make have a wrecked goliath that's fallen off the road?
Also, I came across this in another blog I follow.
Might be worth trying. AA guns, maybe?
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Yes. The thickness is a concern but it shouldn’t hurt the styrofoam if I get a good layer of watered down wood glue on top of everything. Maybe I’ll lookninto watering down the construction paint too. It will only be a base coat and possible the first layer of grey
Automatically Appended Next Post:
The wrecked Goliath is a good idea. I have an extra Elysian tauros I was going to use.
In regards to AA guns I’m probably just going to have mobile hydras
And my defense cannon is already covered. I’ll probably have the attacking army’s use those larger seige cannons

I could add some of those smaller as platforms to this walkway possibly?
What city blog?
I just started reading rob hawkins. He’s amazing

The only ad mech skitari riffles I had were the ones that came with the walkers but I think they’ll work.
I’m going to try to make small casts of these 3 options to add to different troops. Hopefully there will be a sniper option, a long barrel and a standard. I think this will add just enough detail and subtle change to help with the heirloom look. Should I do anything else? Banana clip, no clip, etc? I only want to change the existing riffles so I can use the arms that come with the troop sets
74210
Post by: Ustrello
You can probably do the top one as the sniper, the middle one as a hellblaster and the bottom one as the normal lasgun imo.
95627
Post by: EmberlordofFire8
Wow. Those are some cool weapons.
I'd remove the clip and attach a cable leading to the backpack, but that might be too tricky to cast.
21480
Post by: btoliver311
Right now everything is too tricky to cast.
I spent my entire weekend trying to use my new molds and some of my old ones to no avail. For some reason they won’t completely set. At first I thought it had to do with the resin mixes not being mixed well or being too old. And that explained the first 2 attempts. But now they are still a mess and I’m thinking that has to do with all the chemicals (paint thinner, water soap, nail polish remover) I used to clean them But they were all rinsed after pretty well. I really have no idea.
So I’m down a lot of time, tons of material and my hands are more resin than skin now. Needless to say, I’m not going to be casting for awhile. Lucky I have enough other stuff to work on

Just received some of the skitarri riffle bits I ordered. Not really liking the conversions. Way too much disproportion and probably not worth the work. Tried a few lengths:
I think I have good news too. I went to my local Reynolds materials, a casting products sales company, and they gave me some theories about what’s going wrong with my casts. I guess water is really bad for cleaning as it can be absorbed into the rubber mold and release during casting. Hense all my bubbles.
We also talked about my small casts and they suggested before I get into pressure casting (which I’m pretty sure I can’t afford) that I try using disposable plastic injectors
Hope this works because I want to start making more chest armor. Wish me luck
