[user][list][code[img] Hello Dakka bloggers, Gitz has been after me to start a blog for some time so here goes. A little general information about me, I have been gaming since my teens (Ogre, D&D during the Gygax era) when I started painting some fantasy figures. When Space Hulk first came out I picked up the game and a few of my friends and I started playing. We loved the whole Alien feel about the game and decided to try some 40k when Rogue Trader was available.
I started playing Eldar and my brother collected Blood Angels, a few of our other friends played Space Wolves, Orcs and Genestealers. Our group played for about a year then broke apart from most of them moving away. I continued to pick up a few models and the boxed set from 2nd or 3rd edition, but really did not play again till the start of 6th edition. Pretty sure that is when I met Gitz and the rest of the boyz that I game with to this day.
Here is a few pictures of what I have been working on this year, I dont consider myself a artist but really enjoy the painting aspect of the game.

Wow, that's some really lovely eldar! What army is the henchman marine for, I guess with 40k these days he and the inquisitor he goes with could be for your eldar

Post by: Gitsplitta
Yorkright and I have this long standing campaign going on between our armies. Originally, it was his Blood Angels vs my Mantis Warriors with an Inquisitor as the catalyst. Now it's expanded well beyond that. There's no telling which inquisitor this marine is intended for or what nefarious plot they will be hatching against our heroes... the noble Mantis Warriors!

Post by: RiTides
Hahaha I have a feeling his view on which side are the "heroes" differs a bit!

93572
Post by: Yorkright
Progress update: Was not happy with the red hammer, still not enthused but will go with the way it is now. Worked up the flesh tones, the reason I went with the purple was an attempt to make skin look warm. The armor is supposed to look battle damaged, does anyone have some pointers for that?
Thanks for looking.

Post by: Gitsplitta
I like what you've done with the battle damage... it may be a bit too subtle though. Perhaps a bit of sponge-chipping to get the idea across in a more obvious manner?
Head looks really good by-the-way. Always something I struggle with.

Howdy, the henchman is looking grizzled and diligent.... however..... THAT IS A CHAOS POWER PACK! I believe the Inquisition would have a word with you, my good sir...

Does that not present an alarming hypocrisy? Where is the stake to burn at around here?

See, this is what I've been saying the whole time. And why my Mantis Warriors have been fighting against Yorkright's inquisitors this whole campaign. There's somepin' fishiny goin' on over there...

Very nice weathering! I like that you went for a drybrush approach rather than line highlighting, as it makes for a more believeable result IMHO. Have you any plans for basing yet?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I think it looks really good Yorkright. Not too dense and concentrated in the forward-facing areas that are likely to take the most abuse.
93572
Post by: Yorkright
Thanks for the encouraging words guys. For basing I am leaning 2 ways, first is to base him as my other Inquisitor models the other is I have a box of the GW industrial bases. Going with the GW bases would mean changing over the others, most of those are metal and would be a pain to do.

Thanks for the comments fellows. Here is the first of my Inquisitors deathwatch, they do not wear the normal silver shoulder pads or adorn themselves with alot of Inquisitor bling. The story is the group introduced themselves to Jaxeena committing themselves to her cause, all their normal chapter markings have been covered up or scratched off. Most of the armor they wear is quite old and some have had to "find" replacement parts of dubious origin.
Looking through my rather large collection I found a few more old models that will be added to the Band. Will post after I rebase them.

Post by: Yorkright
The problem I have with it is the paint is a bit thick and the symbol looks a bit clunky, now that I have added some battle damage and turned him into a black shield it doesn't look so bad. I also showed the mark to see if anyone would react to the Chapter it represents :-). Should have an updated photo soon.

Thinning your paint might help, and for small symbols, working 'inside out' allows you to correct with the next layer of paint. As for the chapter: my smurf lore is rather limited I'm afraid

Sterling stuff, its nice to see the return of the red bolter casing.
How are you doing the combat blades? They look quite different to the default ones in Calth and Prospero.
93572
Post by: Yorkright
@ EDC and Justerin thanks for the input, greatly appreciated. I almost tore the whole thing apart last night thinking it did not look quite right. Will post a pic soon of how the painting is coming along.
@Gummy my weathering is mostly sponge chipping with light wash of Agrax Earthshade. I took a look at your weathering and thought it looked great.
@Daemonjellybaby the combat blade is a small conversion using the blade from the Aspiring Champion and then gluing it to the hilt of the combat blade in the Calth box. Wish I had more of them to convert with.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
I like the old-school flamer nozzle on that marine. Nice find

Ah ok, thanks for that.
I think the DE executioner kit has some similar curved blades if you're looking for more.

Thanks guys, working on the next marine. @Commissar do I need to give it a blue wash?
Blue wash, then a black/brone drybrush for the nozzle does wonders. If you have weathering powders, does are also brilliant for adding a nice burnt crust

Got quite a few options so far, will wait till after 9 my time and see how the votes turn out. Astral Claws is not a bad choice but I am going with the traitor legions, of course we know that the Mantis Warriors have a bit of a "reputation" but will leave them out of this group.

Well, several chapters, including the Mantis Warriors were called "Legions" early on in 40k history... before GW codified the term "legion" to have a specific meaning referring to the original founding of SMs..

Succubus done, hoping 8th edition will make my DE army a bit more viable. It is mostly a smattering of this and that never been much of a min max type of player.
@CK thanks I think her hair is the best part of the mini.
@ Gitz thank you
@Goblin Paladin, thanks I tried some of pink and purple on this model, a bit different from the rest of my Wyches.

Some nice work! One minor point of criticism: I think the helmet could with a red accent, or the red on the belt toned down. Right now, the eye is drawn more to the belt wings, while the head should the focal point. Especially with the pretty hair

OK, I'll play "bad cop"... I mean Tom...
I think the figures would be much more dynamic if there was more contrast in your red. Darks much darker, and a brighter up-shade. Don't get me wrong, they look nice now... but the armor is pretty flat-looking. Would be a lot more exciting with darker darks and lighter lights.

Hi Yorkright!
So much win here- and lots for me to attempt to emulate. I very much like your use of color- especially with the Eldar (I've recently started picking up Eldar units with an eye towards building a 1250 point force- I've never played them before). I'm like you in that I play the game to have the opportunity to kitbash, convert and paint. I'm having a ball trying out new techniques on vehicles at the moment, but your use of shading and highlight have me itching to try to improve my skills on figures. Terrific work all around, with excellent attention to detail.

Have not had time for any updates lately. Life gets busy sometimes. There is a tournament coming up soon, 2000 pts 8th edition rules. Digging out my deathcompany and some that I bought from one of our local gamers. My old beakies need some chainswords added, plus I have to re base the new models. DC looks cool, which are yours? I am guessing the stoney bases and the greens are from your friend.
The red marines are looking great, that Apothacary is looking sweet, could do with some pics...hint hint.
Totally personal thing here, but I don't mind the slightly flatter red you have going, it is a bit different to all the deep reds that are about, and adds a nice muted tone more in keeping with military styles than bright eye popping colours that yell, "here I am!" But if you want to follow the crowd, then Gits is spot on, some deeper shadows and a few crisp highlights. It is all looking great, you have a great style of painting, really good work.

@Dr. H, they were not too bad to paint. Though they are busy with a lot details I tried to keep things simple and stuck with GW's color scheme. Love the trail of pus for starters. A fallen brick wall maybe? A section of aegis?
93572
Post by: Yorkright
The base is one of the texture paints from GW, Agrellan earth, and the pus is several layers of the Nurgles Rot technical paint. I will have to look thru my parts and see if I have any scenery I could use.

Up next is the poxwalkers, saw that someone had used shades and inks to paint them so, I am going to give it a go. The walkers with the great coats and mallets will probably get a bit more attention.

Nice work on the plague drone. I like the idea of a little busted brick wall. You could also possibly do just the hand of a skeleton coming out of the pus(or that's what's left as it's being dissolved by the pus). But only a tiny piece as I really think less is more with these nurgle guys as they are super detailed and a clean base would be such a great contrast.

Post by: Theophony
Looks great, especially for only an hour of work time. Skulls could work too on the bases, possibly coat them with the nurgle rot technical paint to make it look like they have been dissolved by some nasty weapon. It could also explain the lack of vegetation as it all wilted and dissolved.

They are looking spectacular bud, really great work, I mean it.
To keep it simple why not just add damp patches where they have been!, a few darkned foot prints, a scrape or or two of blood/pus, a few drips under them, kinda make it look like they are leaking wet pus all over the place, would only need a few dribbles of paint and a coat of varnish on the specific bits, would animate them, and just add that bit of interest. I think it would look cool with the dry bases you have, which are looking brilliant BTW.

A technique I have used which I feel works great is to pool wood glue on your base and then while it's still wet, drip a few drops of super glue on top. It will make the surface wrinkle up. Looks like some really serious sludge. Great for dissolved bodies.

^ That's a genius idea, stolen!
And yeah, looks great my absolute go to for any kind of goo or weathering is... paint water. I kid you not. 90% of the time it's an ultra thin greybrown wash, effectively. Great for streaks and stains.

I am far from someone to advise on painting, but Bebop does this thing with lots of dots that really makes it look like cloth, I tend to do a cross hatching method with the highlights, make it look like material, mind you mine probably comes out more like hessian than fine cloth. I am sure one of your fellow painters will help you out here.

Must give Bebop's blog a look for that little dots method. The only one I've figured out so far is successive washes to make something look like leather...
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
You're most kind.
I dunno, man, I like your cloak a lot I think you need some softer highlights in there, maybe a thin 50/50 of your purple with decahala lilac and then blended whilst still wet up to the edges with the lilac. I'd then wash it with thinned greenshade - I'm very into using contrasting colours for washes - and a little camosahde in the deepest recesses also, and take the final highlights up again with lilac thinned with a little wolf grey or similar. I'll do an example of something similar over on my blog. Needed an excuse to start Dr Fate and Martian Manhunter
Hope that helps!
93572
Post by: Yorkright
Went back and redid the cloak, took out the reds and took, the highlights up to a light purple. Added a green wash of thinned warp stone green. Thanks for the tips Graven I think the cloak looks richer and has more contrast from the rusted mail.

Last... LAST... I've not even finished the first from the box yet.
Lordy chap looks great. Cloak turned out well, and nice job on the rusty bits (how'd you find the method, easy ain't it?)

@Cam thank you, I am looking forward to your DG build and all the wonderful conversions you do.
@Gitz will keep you updated on a possible game when I can get together.
@Shasolenzabi, got to love the Ooze
@Orlando after visiting your blog I think folks should check out your converted foetid blight drone it is so cool. Poxies are some of my favs to paint and pretty easy to finish and get on the table.
@Dr. H Rusty bitz? Some guy I know had some great advice you should check him out (thanks again) same with the cloak some other fella gave me some advice for that too (thanks graven). Yours are probably taking longer cause I am an out of the box, slap some paint on em gamer while you are an outside the box painter. Most of the folks on DakkaDakka seem to do a lot of conversion work and I am envious of those skills.
See you on the flippty flip.
