Taco bell just opened a single store in the Netherlands. It isn't close to home but I would be able to visit it if I took a detour when visiting relatives.
I really like hot peppers and beans this makes Taco's one of my favorite dishes, but I do not like most of the Dutch-Mexican restaurant taco's.
They are either too bland or cheap out on the filling of their vegetarian taco's. Would taco bell be worth the visit ?

It makes the best cat tacos money can buy. Would I go there? Only if I had a strange desire to eat horrific food and have explosive diarrhea. I guess if you want to know what the food in hell tastes like.

I really like their Grilled Stuffed Burrito.

If you like hot peppers, you may be disappointed though, I don't find much of what they offer very spicy at all.

Are you looking for vegetarian options? Aside from the mighty bean and cheese burrito I don't think they offer a lot of vegetarian options unless you customize an order. At least that is the case in the States, perhaps the Dutch location has alternative menu items?

If you get them to make a taco for you with beans instead of meat, ask if they'll add the red sauce included with bean and cheese burrito. That sauce is really the only thing that makes their paste-like beans edible in my opinion. The rule is only true for Taco Bell's pinto beans. Their black beans are actually pretty good, but they stopped carrying those at the locations in my area, so I am not sure if they are still on the menu.

They have multiple temperatures of hot sauce, so if you like it spicy, go for the fire sauce. Taco Bell is not known for their authentic Mexican cuisine by a long shot, but it is typical fast food. Heck, I just about grew up on Taco Bell (as one on the way home from school), but nowadays it is not in my top 5, but might barely break into the top 10 of places in easy driving distance.

My recommendation - don't make a special trip just for TB. Combine it with something else, so the trip won't end up a total disappointment if it is not your fancy.

Chain restaurants tend to play things pretty safe. Nandos is quite tame. If you want really hot food, go to a proper curry house and ask for something special from the chef.

It's decent fast food; a lot of people put it pretty low on their fast food list, but I reserve that position for McDonald's. Don't go in there expecting anything mind-blowing, but if you need a quick meal, it's not a terrible choice.

It's far from the best food in the world, but I have no issues with taco bell. I've had worse intestinal experiences with qdoba than taco bell.

But I find their portions are plentiful and are reasonably priced, and I feel fine afterwards.

Though, I also wouldn't make a special trip, but I live 3 minutes away from one. If I lived in a country with limited access to Mexican food, might be worth a trip.

No.

Taco bell is for late night inebriated poor life choices by teenagers in US suburbs when nothing else is open. For actual human nutrition, I would avoid.

For real though, it's basically McDonalds...but with tortillas instead of buns. Make of that what you will.

I really enjoyed the deep fried chalupas I had at Taco Bell when I visited San Diego nearly twenty years ago. I was fairly drunk for most of my stay, though.

Try it! You won't know unless you do.

Although I enjoy Taco Bell, this statement is absolutely true. TB is at best a Southwestern TexMex Americana hybrid....drenched in grease.
My very Mexican wife calls their tacos "abominations".

I have a high constitution for this kind of food (likely brought on by years of eating fast food) and TB does not upset my stomach at all.
However it can mess with some peoples' digestion.

Having said this, a TB in the Netherlands is unlikely to be the same as on in the U.S. Due to local tastes and ingredients, often fast food chains that venture to other countries have fairly different menus. McDonalds is completely different in China, for example

I'd try it at least once, but don't have high or low expectations.

Actually the comparasions with McDonald can be right in USA, but even McDonald its very very different in Europe than in the USA. The rations are smaller, the prices higher, as the quality is. Because European regulations about food are more strict.

So maybe TacoBells in Europe are better than in US.

EDIT: Basically what Galef said!

Highly doubtful. They have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Mexican food is. You will never find Latin Americans in a TB.

Fun Fact: When I was stationed in Panama the command there put out surveys asking what folks wanted to improve 'quality of life' for troopers and their families. One of the most requested things was to bring a Taco Bell onto one of the posts.

The closest they could do was bring in some Taco Bell branded frozen burritos to the Anthony's Pizza in one of the food courts.

Yeah, Taco Bell is terrible. They are notorious for using low grade products. Their "beef" is 12% "other"- and that is a huge step up from the 64% it used to be (which didn't even meet USDA requirements to be called "beef")! The beans come as powder. About the only thing worth eating is the tomatoes and lettuce, which have to be brought in fresh as they are perishable.

Taco Bell is a pale imitation of actual Mexican cuisine. It was started by a white guy in California trying to knock off Mexican tacos and imitate a taqueria. Unfortunately, clueless people throughout the US had never had a fresh, homemade tortilla and didn't know the difference. They have never been able to keep the restaurants open in Mexico.

In 2013 they got popped for using horsemeat in the UK, so maybe they are trying new products for international markets?

It fills its niche real well. Don't go there for a meal, find yourself there after a night at the bars.

And here's a pro-tip:
There's a menu of big items and meals- ignore it. The art to ordering at Taco Bell is getting 3-5 of the super cheap small things- maybe a beefy 5-layer, a couple of spicy potato soft tacos, and a mini quesadilla? $5, pretty inedible if sober, but drunk or stoned? A masterpiece.

I have no experience with Taco Bell, but I guess it can't be much worse than Taco Mundo... It probably is the same though. Just cheap knock-offs of real Mexican food.
I'd either go to a genuinely Mexican restaurant or try to make something yourself.

I look at Taco Bell like this...

Most of the world doesn't know what really authentic Mexican food tastes like. Here in America, we're spoiled with the fact that we have a rich, established Mexican-American culture that has gifted us with the beautiful south of our border cuisine. Taco Bell is to Mexican Food, what McRib is to BBQ. It's a slick, quick, bastardized version of the real deal. It will please most palates...look at the sales numbers for proof of this or talk to my teenage son who knows great Mexican food, but still enjoys scarfing down a Gordita Steak Crunchwrap Supreme...so it thrives. Real, and I mean the real deal, Mexican cuisine done authentically can stand up with any world cuisine. Understand that there's a difference, a big difference, but there's room and a place for both.

It didn't look appetizing at all it all seems to be weirdly colored paste centric and they somehow seem to be proud at selling huge quantities of pepsi the drink that no one really wants to drink. They seem to have no healthy or at least fresh looking options at all.

How are they this popular ?

It is a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes I know it's not genuine mexican food and the quality of the ingredients are probably shady at best, but when you just want something vaguely cheesy and artery clogging, you go to taco bell. It's the mcdonalds of pseudo-mexican food. I will gorge myself on their beef burritos all day long if the doctors didn't tell me it's gotten to the point of being a health hazard for me.

I always prepare a roll of toilet paper on hand for it.

Having read this thread....

I would like to make it known that the Humble British Kebab, usually consumed late at night (or very early in the morning), whilst in a state of advanced refreshment, and often involved the magic act Abrakebabra* still seems less appealing.

*Abrakebabra is where the performer makes their kebab disappear, only to later reappear, usually on the back of the taxi driver's head

The Black Bean burrito and the Seven Layer burrito are both vegetarian but I have no idea if they are options at that Taco Bell.

Like a lot of fast food it isn't usually the best option but it can be perfectly reasonable if you get it once in awhile and are somewhat selective.

We had Taco Bells here shortly before the movie "Demolition man" opened at the cinema (1993). I bring this up, because our theatrical print had "Taco Bell" winning the "franchise wars".

By the time it got released on dvd (2004) locally, ALL traces of Taco Bell had been erased locally. Symbolically, most of the references to TB had been replaced by Pizza Hut in that release.

I tried it a couple of times. The bean ones were bland, and all the hot sauce did was add heat, not flavour. I could keep it down, but it invariably wanted out a few hours later - sometimes explosively.

I like it. There's a special place in my heart for gorditas and taco supremes. That sour cream is probably the only sour cream I like. It's cheap too (in the U.S.), but I'm not so sure how cheap it is in the Netherlands as it was more expensive in Japan.

I love Taco Bell. It is definitely in my top 5 fast food places. The thing about it is, it is definitely fast food, so intended to be cheap rather than healthy. And I've never had digestive issues with it like some of you are describing. Maybe my digestive tract is really robust or something. I never had an issue with it even when I worked at a Taco Bell for like 7 months.

Really the main fast food I eat much of (due to its proximity to my apartment-short walking distance) is Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken. Better than KFC in my opinion. If there was a Taco Bell that close, I'd eat there a lot too as it is cheaper than Lee's.

It would be interesting to try some of these American places in foreign countries. I've never had the opportunity to visit another country, but maybe someday...

For people unacclimated to spicy food, even small amounts can cause problems as capsaicin is an irritant. Additionally, when you have large amounts of oils and similar products, they often pass quickly in an undigested state. Their meat uses a large amount of fillers that may cause similar issues. Taco Bell also has a reputation for relatively poor sanitary conditions (though it varies widely by location), and it is not uncommon to get various severities of food poisoning from improper food handling. Anecdotally, I got a severe case of food poisoning from a Taco Bell where the sour cream was not properly refrigerated (the manager acknowledged the fact and numerous other people got sick from it) and couldn't touch sour cream for years.

I've never found Taco Bell to be particularly spicy. I grew up with Cajun food, and after 15 years in Houston, grew to love spicy Tex-Mex for the perfection it is. I'll admit that there were some spicy dishes that regretted the next morning.

However, all jokes aside, the few times I've had Taco Bell, I had issues later.

I'm betting that's what doesn't agree with me. Look at how much grease and oil is in the bottom of the bag or in the wrapper next time you eat there.

Blegh...

I used to love Taco Bell way back when, when fast food wasn't as crappy (it was still crap, just not the crap of today). Nowadays I can't touch it. There are much better fast-casual burrito places around me though, I have a Qdoba, Moe's and Chipotle all within like 10 minutes of each other. And a few authentic mexican places around here too, Norristown apparenly has quite the mexican population and there's some seriously good mexican restaurants around here. So I'm spoiled now.

Like all fast food joints, it's a gamble. Chances are if it's a new place, the employees will care a little more and the boss might be around the crack the whip, so you might have better luck. Have some pepto on hand just in case

This is probably why I've never really had any issue with Taco Bell. I've always loved spicy food and even started eating Jalapeños & Pepperoncini out of the jar when I was around 12.

If you are accustomed to spicy food, go for it. If not, be prepared.

We exaggerate a bit as no food place can induce that kind of indigestion on it's clientele for that long and still stay in business.

However a lot of the stuff they use is highly processed, so for most people it's in one hole and out the other pretty fast. They also use a lot of beans for filler, which might also contribute to the "flushing". And in at least one known case they were using meat that were below the lowest food grade for human consumption (it was a grade used for dog food, literally). I think that has stopped after the story broke but it does explain a lot.

Taco Bell is also more pronounced because fast food joints generally cause constipation more than...regularity...so it's a lot more noticable if you're accustomed to fast food fare.

It's mostly a burger and fries place. Think Burger King, but IMO just a bit better.

That's fair. Wendy's Baconnator is a step above a BK burger, and even McD's in my book. McD's still has the best fries (IMHO). BK's original chicken sandwhich is my go-to if I need to get fast food.

NO, they indistinguishably suck balls. There are multiple fast food Mexican joints that are just fine, and some that are award winning (again Torchies Tacos). TB and DT are a trip through hell taken by people who haven't had the blessing of eating real Mexican food.

EDIT: I have only had Taco Cabana once but I will second that it is decent, at least when I had it. Full disclosure: all of my girlfriends before SWMBO were of Mexican or Latin American heritage/nationality so I may be biased.

Frazz, they are definitely distinguishable. If Taco Bell is a trip through hell, it's the kind where you are denied God's presence for all eternity ("there is no God" being a frequent refrain in the hours after eating Taco Bell), whereas Del Taco is the kind of hell Clive Barker and Event Horizon warned us about. If you can't distinguish them, then go order a meal at Del Taco; they have such delectable agonies to share with you.

I remember when Wendy's was in the UK. Their stuff wiped the floor with Micky Ds and Burger Kings. I'm so sad it's gone from here now.

The reason it's so good is because the ground beef they use is something ridiculous like 60% fat, or so I've heard.

Old Bay is good stuff for seafood boils. Joe's Crab Shack uses it IIRC. I prefer Zatarain's, though.

"Cajun" seasoning is a faux spicy spice dusting/style that has been floating around a while. Most of the Cajun potatoes I have seen in from actual Cajuns are mashed, boiled, or fried and salted. "Cajun" seasoning is usually just a generic stand in like "Italian" or "Mexican" seasoning. I have never tried 5 Guys, so I don't know if they are any good.

Be sure to get the Cajun fries - the Cajun seasoning is "free" because they want you to eat it that way.

Same reason the core toppings are "free" - because that's how you're supposed to eat it (although I usually hold the mustard, as I'm getting enough spice in the Cajun fries, above). If you're not getting the grilled onions & mushrooms on the burger, you're doing it wrong.

You have a weird Popeyes then. The one near me only has a light coating of breadcrumbs, just enough to get crunchy without being doughy. It does vary from place to place so maybe it's the store near you.

Yeah. When I grew up in Germany, the donor kebabs were very tasty, thick warm bread, fresh crisp salad and feta, and crispy charred meat. How dissappointed I was on my return to England to be handed a once frozen pitta, containing decaying lettuce, what seemed like 12 chopped onions, and watery, grey looking strips of meat. Awful.

Popeyes franchises vary highly between stores. Their spicy chicken is probably my favorite chain chicken (I found Cane's to be lackluster with interesting sauce), but our closest location screws up the orders so much (and this is on straight by the menu orders, nothing weird; usually because they forget sides), I have given up trying to eat there.

They're open late at night, and at least in the US, they sell a $5 box with your choice of 3 tacos/burritos/some combination, nacho chips with cheese, and a medium drink, which is about half the cost for all that stuff otherwise.

As for whether or not it's good (or Mexican), well, people don't go to Taco Bell because it's Mexican. They go to Taco Bell because it's cheap and/or it's 3 in the morning and nothing else is open besides McDonald's, and McDonald's doesn't stuff their burritos to the bursting point.

Oh, and Mountain Dew Baja Blast, which is the nectar of gods. And damn-near impossible to find anywhere else unless you live in a big city that's somewhat close to the Mexican border.

Apart from getting some choice cuts to take home my stand out memory is the carcass hoseings that went into the meat cubes for kebabs. It was truely awful stuff. The bones were hosed and steamed to remove fragments for the cubes. Suffice to say no matter how drunk I got in my student days I never ate one and the smell is enough to turn my guts inside out. Seriously people good quality cuts of meat are worth paying for. Especially in the US, food is crazy cheap out there. UK isn't far behind.

JitB is like McDonalds, but with a hair more flash. Same amount of indigestion, tho. They have cheap, crunchy tacos and curly fries - the curlys aren't bad. Arguably better shakes than McDs, but still well short of a proper hand-spun.

That sauce... can I get cheese curds with gravy on my fries?

Home of the square burger patty. Greasier than Burger King, fried on a griddle, not over a flame. I generally get their chicken strips rather than a burger, though my brother is a big fan. Decent fries, though, probably 2nd to McD's for fast food.

For fast food burgers, I'll take Harvey's any day. Flame cooked and made to order in front of you, no such thing as a 'standard' burger. South St Burgers is a step up from that (and they have New York Fries). Five Guys is roughly equivalent IMO, though I've only eaten there once.

They also advertise their meat as 'never frozen', which they seem to back up by using a lot of refrigerated trucks for shipping. Whether that has any impact on quality I can't tell, I haven't been in a Wendy's in ages.

The big local thing in my area is Braum's, which is sort of like an upgraded Dairy Queen with a small grocer built-in to most locations, except with food besides the ice cream that is actually edible. They do something similar to Wendy's but more extreme in that they don't ship more than 200 miles away from their farm HQ. They're pretty good, but their fries leave something to be desired.

Of course, everyone knows frozen custard is superior to frozen ice cream anyway

Wendy's is arguably the "best" fast food chain in the US, where the burgers are pretty decent, and they have some relatively healthy options (you can sub a small salad for the combo fries). "Never frozen" means that the patty cooks better, more evenly. You can test that by making a patty and freezing it yourself, before cooking it on the pan.

Farm-to-table is becoming a big thing here in SoCal, particularly for fast casual dining.

Burger ranking goes like this:

Fuddruckers & Five Guys (fast casual)
----
Wendy's & Carl's / Hardees (fast food)
Jack & Sonic
Mickey's & BK

Fudd's hand-breaded rings are far better than Sonic, which is for tots, not rings or fries. Fight me.

Hardee's/Carl's Jr is nice, but they're always in odd places, I find. Though maybe that's because I've only ever lived on the fringes of their areas.

And yeah, Five Guys blows them all out of the water. They're pricey though.

Of course, if you really want to talk burgers, you'd have to talk about proper high-end burg joints like Red Robin.

Five Guys?? Why do people tolerate this dreck? I've had the misfortune of 'dining' there twice. If you like generic early 60's burger joint grease mixed with modern pricing then Five Guys is for you! The only mercy is the small portions. My out-of-state friend took a picture of her meal because the tomato was the same color as the lettuce. Gak.

Wendy's is okay, but you take your chances with the fries. Sometimes they are ok, other times they are just cold and/or greasy. As mentioned earlier, McDonalds has the best fries. Period.

Taco Bell is fine...in small doses. I only eat the basic taco and if available the chili cheese burrito...still not sure if it's a solid or a really thick liquid though. ; )

You must have a crappy Five Guys. The one hear is delicious and an absolute gut bomb in terms of how much food it is. If you order a small fries, you get paper bag jammed with more fries than most other chains' largest serving. You can also gorge on free peanuts, if that's your thing.

I couldn't speak about the tomatoes or the lettuce. Rabbit food doesn't belong on a hamburger.

As someone who used to not tolerate any vegetables on my burgers (I still don't tolerate pickles), I am honour-bound to fight you over them words.

I guess ketchup is a vegetable

Asparagus, brussel sprouts, and broccoli are the only veggies I shove down my gullet. I would try any of those on a burger, but I've never seen that on a menu.

I only like veggies that make my pee stink extra bad

Brussels sprouts are awesome. You have to cook them till they're burnt....that's the key. They should be crispy, not squishy.

Brussels Sprouts maded with a little of garlic and extra virgin Olive Oil on a pan, with fried chorizo are very very tasty.

Have you chorizo's in USA? Maybe you call them "Spanish sausages"? I don't know.

Spoiler:
Its basically a natural sausage, cured, with spicy pepper and all of that. It its made of meat that you put in the gut of the pork

Yeah, we have chorizo. It might be overused as a breakfast meat, mixed into eggs or potatoes.

There's some brand of soy or fake chorizo we used to buy that was freakin' amazing. Better than the real thing. They overloaded it with grease and spicy sauce to compensate for the soy or something, and the end result was every bit as greasy-delicious as Taco Bell in the early am.

You know why kebab places never call it that in the US? Well some entrepreneur doesn't because someone opened a Donner Kebab (pretty sure they even spelled it that way) near me recently. Too bad for them there is already a glut of high quality Mediterranean restaurants around here.

The Bay Area's Bongo Burger is the biggest kebab chain I know, and they're not bad at all.

Taco Bell "fine", but FG "dreck"? 1, 2, 3 strikes, you're out. You clearly don't know WTF you're talking about.

With their overstuffed Cajun Fries, Five Guys has the best fast fries in the business. By far. Hands down. McD's doesn't even come close. If cooked properly, Wendy's fries easily beat McD's fries.

There's a Fudds at I-5 / CA-91 / Orangethorpe. If I get a BOGO, maybe we can get lunch there. Anyhow, of the fast burger chains, Fudd's rings are easily the best. Never been to First Class Pizza, so I couldn't say.

InO is on par with Jack & Sonic, as is A&W. InO is marketing-driven, due to their (not so) "secret menu".

They seem to be doing all right up here in Southern Ontario. They're even in the ENroute stations (gas/food stops along provincial highways). Something like 850 locations in Canada, apparently. Interestingly, it's a separate company from the US version (bought by Unilever in the 70's, sold to its management in the 90's).

I can go into any burger dive in Detroit, get just as good a burger, and pay 25% the cost.

Show me the burger and the receipt.

I get that Detroit is a 3rd world country, so real American dollars go really far, but if you're paying less than $2 for that burger, you're not getting anything close. Is it rat meat they're serving?

This is accurate. The name of the truck escapes me but I had some amazing sliders from a LA food truck.

It's not a burger, but the Kool Haus ice-cream sandwich truck is F-ing amazing. They also have a brick & mortar storefront in Old Town Pasadena. I believe there a Kool Haus trucks in a few cities across the country, if one is near you try it! The Dirty Mint Chip ice cream will make your knees go weak.

InNOut is great for "eat it in the car" food. It gets blown vastly out of proportion and then hated on a lot when it fails to live up, but for quick drive through fare it's great.

Love my roach coaches though

Taco Bell is/was my least favorite fast food restaurant. I'm not a fan of fast food in general, and I always thought they were the worst.

That said, a cousin of mine recently got me addicted to the cheesy gordita crunch combo. I have no idea why I like it so much, as it seems like it should be awful. It certainly does awful things to me.

I wish I had good food trucks around here, but they're all downtown and I never, ever go into the city. If I have to pay to park somewhere, I'd rather just not go. I had an idea to start a mac & cheese themed food truck at one point I was gonna call it Mr. Melty's.

I had In n Out when I lived in L.A., it was good .. I think the fries were homemade? It was a while ago. I usually went to Carl's Jr when I was out there, I always got the BBQ western burger that had onion rings on it. And I eat at Steak & Shake a lot when I go to GenCon, but there's none near where I live. Sometimes I get a really bad craving for Arby's though.. and I always have to get the large roast beef/big montana with melty cheese and curly fries. I'm tempted to try their new Gyro, but we have good greek places around here so I think I'll be disappointed.

Around here there is a roach coach with a trademark-infringing Godzilla on the side. Great food. Not to be confused with the Dogzilla hot dog truck.

There's also the NWA (Ninja's With Appetite) food truck, but the last few times I had their food they took a long time to cook everything. Sworn enemies of the Samurai Burrito truck, I assume.

I had to stop, but I am guessing the gist of this entire thread is hate on Taco Bell.
I would like to counter argue, as a south Texan, that TB is not the worst thing in the world.

I eat it often for lunch. The quesadilla is tasty. I also ate Afghan and Iraqi sand for 3 years, so my stomach is literally iron. I never had intestinal issues after and for an american hybrid its not bad. Variety is good, meat is greasy, its what you expect from fast food. Nothing fast food offers is the equivalent of healthy, so once you accept that, your decision point becomes easier.

Try it, get the biggest burrito you can, then make up your mind. Atleast you have done something you didn't do before.

About the only thing I find tolerable from KFC are the fries, and I find them better than McDonald's.
Then again that's because the KFC fries have multiple herbs in their seasoning rather than just salt... and also tend to be less greasy and aren't anywhere near as small.

I'd rather not touch either sort though compared to actually nice takeaway shops and burger joints like Burger Urge or all the local Fish n' Chip shops.
