Post by: Theophony

Okay, so as the title suggests this will be my ongoing thread for my Beyond the Gates of Antares gaming stuff. Eventually this will probably become my only thread and other stuff will transfer over from the Going Down thread.

For those just tuning in I am Theophony, or Theo for short. I have been gaming since I was 4 years old when my older brother needed another body in his Dungeons and Dragons games. I continued with that till even my brother and his friends grew out of it and I inherited all their 1st edition stuff and then transitioned into 2nd edition when that came out. Middle school brought me a new game group which lived mainly on Rifts, TMNT, Cyberpunk, Traveller, Megatraveller and others which have come and gone. It wasn't until I was 18 and working at a comic book and gaming store that a high school friends father started to run introductory games of Warhammer Fantasy with his fully painted armies that I got into miniature war gaming. Before that it was mostly bare metal figs for D&D and Star Wars. I started building my own Skaven army even going as far as painting the name of each Ratman on the base, the names all taken from types of cheese which a neighboring shop just happened to be a wine and cheese shop . We quickly built armies of immense size 3000pts plus (1994 or so, so yeah REALLLLLLLLLY HUGE). Then jumped over into 40k where I started with Ultramarines . Over the next few years I collected Every army in 40k, and quite a few in fantasy. Too much of my money went to GW . But like all good things, I ruined it by getting a wife and kids , actually that was the best thing to happen to me, but were all gamers here and we must bemoan the loss of our freedom and expendable income. Most f my armies have gone away, but I still have a huge amount of marines (600-700 easily) all thrown in boxes somewhere. I've puttered around with scratch building things and most recently painted hundreds of zombies for Zombicide which is the only game my kids want to play miniature wise . But I hope to correct that now with my most recent purchase.

Beyond the Gates of Antares starter set.

In it are two forces, though not evenly pointed, which also includes a 290 page hardback rulebook, custom dice, tokens, templates and pin markers.

I was planning on building the Ghar suits to be magnetized to swap the heads out with servo Skulls, but I think I'm just going to do a static build with Antares for now. That however doesn't mean that I cannot play around with funtack and servo Skulls on one model at least

Servo Ghar

And with a Zombicide walker for size comparison

With a missile pod taken from a space marine drop pod. I had thought about doing them in Iron Warriors colors, or angry marine colors with the servo skull heads

I hope to work on them more Friday morning or this weekend. Got to go update the old thread with a link here. Comments are how we make things run, so bring them on.

Hmm, the model looks so much more interesting with that servo skull and missile pod!

I've been watching some how to play videos by Warlord games and Beasts of War, they really have me hooked now. Sadly now I think I want Algoryn or Boromites

ckig wrote:This will be interesting .. any ideas on how you'll paint them?

That is the million dollar question, all I can say is "poorly"

Malika2 wrote:Hmm, the model looks so much more interesting with that servo skull and missile pod!

I do love the Servo Skull idea and bringing my Angry Servo Skulls to battle would be fun, but I actually think I've decided the most GW parts happening with these guys will probably be as base decorations or terrain.

Well as Ckig has asked about painting I was actually outside priming all the figs still on sprue. It all got a lovely rusty car brown primer coat and dried last night as I was barbequing dinner. THis morning I've managed to assemble all three Ghar assault troops (two newly primed and the one I had tacked together with the servo skull. Now the quandry is what colors to go with?

My first inclination is to go with the standard paint scheme that they have on the studio models, white with red details and pinkish plasma reactors. The problem I have with this is I detest painting white, so many layers of a watered down color just to get it really smooth. Secondly it doesn't look very characterful. Now I could paint them up black and white like a scifi police theme, the plasma lights like the flashing lights on a police cruiser, so its still in the running.

My second idea was to go Iron Warriors paint scheme with gunmetal, black and yellow. These are the Warmongering bad es of the Antares system, so it could work, and use them as Iron Warrior combat robots should i ever play 40K again. The problem i have with that is i want to try and keep the two systems separate.

The third option is to go a different scheme altogether, i've been searching online, but still nothing has struck a chord, so suggestions are welcome.

The paint plan for the Concord guys is also in limbo, but I think I'll stick to studio style for them. Reason being is they have matvhing dive for all the units and I'd like them to blend well on the table.

Here are the dice for playing with *order dice)

Green dice for concord, grey with red writing for Ghar. The Black one is a special Ghar distortion die, so I only have one of those to use.

I have never sat down to watch a 40K video (sorry people who post their battle reports ), but i've watched gameplay videos of BtGoA the last few days, some are good, some not so good, but to give you an idea of the terrain needed and the game length here is a Beasts of War game with Boromites vs. Algoryn

They messed up on the Firefight at 28 minutes or so, and forgot a few pluses for doing a fire order, but it was really enjoyable. Lots of terrain, quick, brutal and looks fun with the order dice being random so no body is sitting aside for long periods of time.

I think this game got a bad rap at first because of the bad Kickstarter, I hope it continues to grow as more and more units become plastic.

Looking forward to this, there's some cool stuff to be done with the GoA minis!

I can see why you're skipping the skulls here, but there's awesome potential for a Mechanicus unit or two using the Ghar walkers as a base for some conversion work, might have to try that myself in future!

Have you seen the new Freeborn Command Tank/Skimmer Theo? It looks great.

If you ever need some more Concord plastic troops just give me a shout as I have a few sprues knocking around somewhere.

As for choosing a Ghar scheme I have seen a good few ones, I think my favourite is a traditional Camo scheme circa WWII. If you do social media the GOA facebook group is also a great source of inspiration.

Yeah they really would fit Skulls and Mechanicus very well. I didn't like what I saw with the Kickstarter, but the more I'm looking at Antares the more I'm liking it. Maybe just because it's a change from the Grimdork without the anime.

I always take plastic, but shipping would just make it stupid from England to the U.S., but thanks for the offer.

Well paint happened, but not enough time, so only a PIP pic for now.

The grey is still a little darker than the dice, but I think I can deal with that, but it all needs at least one more coat.

I should go with red for the plasma parts to match the dice, but I'm feeling drawn towards purple . No reason why, but that's what I was thinking, what do you all think. I could still do red lenses and tactical markings, but do purple for the glowey bits.

Off to work now

This is very interesting, and the models are looking brilliant, not heard of it before.

Um why not paint the lettering on the dice purple!

Thanks Cam , I was actually thinking of painting the die , we are on the same wavelength there.

So not much to show for weekend progress. Did paint this morning for a bit, but now I must go mow the lawn....or buy some goats .

Here is the first Ghar, not sure how much I like it, might go a completely different route and see how that comes out.

Thanks, I'm starting to grow on it, or it grow on me, either way I think I'll stick with it.

It's just slightly purplish on the grey hue, but as I've said above I think I'll keep going with it.

In the mean time I decided to paint some Concord. Only the base colors blocked in currently, and I've gone very similar to the studio scheme with them too.

I like the lighter colored lenses and face shield. Still needs highlighting and weapon glow color. Any suggestions for those?

Good to see you back Vik

Yeah, I still have problems with how a boltgun is like a 2" diameter shell and the clip is supposed to hold any serious amount of these. Antares uses a lot of energy weapons so it's more sensible to me.

Well no picks right now as the wife just got home from her last day of school this year . My kids last day is tomorrow, so summer progress will slow down . I did manage to assemble the rest of the Ghar suits. They too have crab claws, so maybe their is some relation to Mr. Crabs.

A nice list of purchases there. The Kar'A 9 set is a very nice way to expand your Concord whilst also getting some Algoryn. It will be good to see your thoughts on the Algoryn plastics as I have not had them in hand.

The free Black Guard with the Xilos supplement is a great little miniature, it will be interesting to see your Rebel Ghar colour scheme.

Thanks Listentomewarriors , I was thinking "Do I really need more Concord basic troopers?", but a second set of templates, more pin markers, dice and other stuff made it a good deal. Plus Concord guys are like space marines in how they are BtGoA poster boys, so you can't have too many.

I am actually really excited for the freebie figure from the Chryseis book, his name is Nurk27

Surgically altered ghar , looks like an orc to me

Edit: I totally forgot about the month of June since the last supplement book doesn't release until JULY, my whole order is on hold until then. Oh well, it'll give me time to work on the rest of these figs.

Well I've gotten a little paint time in so here is where the Concord are now.

4 (5man) strike squads base colored except guns
And the leader Kai Lek also base colored.

Now onto the scary part of using soft tone on them to see how that looks and bring out details.

I did change up the helmets to the off white color also, the lenses will probably go back to the light blue later, but green was making the model too top heavy in color.....if that makes sense.

I've also contemplated doing the face shields in the same solid color as the armor since this is the future and why would they still be using clear lenses? Obviously they are integrated with nanotechnology already (that's what the Concord are, humans completely integrated with nanotechnology and controlled by a mega computer system called IMTel).

We'll see how the soft tone looks and then go from there. I also got three more of the light weapons drones done, not pictured, one of them has a subverted matrix attached.

Edit: lenses have base color added and all soft tone added. I like how the soft tone changed the white to a bone color. Always tried to get bone color working from an ivory/ cream but it got too dark, so I think I found a new recipe.

They are coming along nicely.

I prefer the white helmets too. Good decision. I'd keep the lenses blue though, it adds a nice spot of colour to the mini.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2017/05/30 17:45:16

Post by: Theophony

Thanks Ckig,

Lenses are staying blue, will get some white streaks to them, but hopefully not too much, will have to see how steady my hands are.

Spent almost four hours at the pool yesterday....can you say sunburn , even spraying on the sunscreen every hour , stupid fair skin. But came home and painted last night

Finished a second Ghar CCW guy, I goofed up and did his eye lenses in purple instead of blue. But I think they will all be that color, just like their plasma reactors, leaving the other guy as blue eyes and have home be the leader. I also goofed and used the mid tone color on the new guys "dark" areas, but still looks good to me and doesn't stand out too much, once again the other guy will be the leader, so slight color variance is okay to me.

Always nice to see more GOA. Your Concord are coming along nicely. I had a hard time coming up with a color scheme for mine. Are you planning on adding in some drop troops to your ranks?

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2017/05/30 19:14:12

Post by: Theophony

Thanks Barzam.
Drop troops will eventually happen, just not for some time. If I get some extra funds then they are just behind the medium and large drone support weapons on the list. The next overall purchase (besides what I'm waiting a month for ) will probably be more ghar stuff as I'll get more basic concord troops out of the Kar'A nine I have ordered. They might just get some conversion work done to them to make them drop troops in the meantime though.

I've been watching some YouTube gameplay by Tabbletop battles(I think???), and they are quite fun to watch, just wish the one guy would stop swearing all the time.

Off to Barzams gallery to check out his Concord. If anyone else has any painted up BtGoA, shoot me a PM as I need to see other people's stuff and since there's no dedicated subforum here I need some help.

I only painted two of mine though. I should really do more. :(
Maybe I'll get to them when I finish my SWA Kill Team.

What kind of Ghar expansions are you planning? More suits, support walkers, or Outcasts? I've been sorely tempted to pick up some rebels, myself.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2017/05/31 01:41:02

Post by: Theophony

I really dislike the look of the squishy Ghar outside of the suits, besides how do they fit inside the suits? So my plan was to use the extra heads that come in the starter box to make flitters and then get at least one unit of the bombardment Ghar suits. Though Miniaturemarket right down the street has a starter silos box for $60 behind the counter. It's missing the Kai Lek figure and the rule book, but that's 4?more concord sprue sand two squads of Ghar (1 squad of CCW and one of snooty guys) plus more pin markers, dice and tokens. So I'm really torn.

So quick 10 minute hobby session and two terrain pieces done, well to the paint stage.

Watching some videos gave me the idea to use some old cds that were in the basement. They had about a dozen pieces of these on a table with very little to it, but made a great theme. The little blue "mushroom" things were scavenged from the trash at work, I intend them to be alien flora. I might glue some tufts on them or the tips of toothpicks and use them as some spiker plants. Rules in the main book.also considering adding some viney roots with thin wire, but most likely not. They are already primed brown and drying now. I still haven't decided on a world color yet to base my guys on, but after looking at my sedition wars doors and terrain packs I think I'll go for an abandoned mining worldscape. Quick and dirty terrain will be the name of this game. Also going more old school with it as well.

Cool use of found materials. I have found that drawer pegs (often sold in bags at craft stores for cheap) make great mushrooms, too. And they're often significantly taller. I layer hotglue on my stuff, but that's way more complicated than the simple design I think you're going for here.

Theo's Thread: They shall be my Angels of Death @ 2017/06/01 14:42:00

Post by: Theophony

True Warboss, I am going simple and easy with these bases as most are just to show where there is a line of sight obstacle, a movement difficulty area or special rules for moving through an area.

So I started on the "Whartleberry patch" (their name not mine, might be mispelled , it's an area of ground with hallucinogenic plants. It doesn't stop movement or block line of sight, but if a unit enters the area and stays in it at the end of the turn then they can suffer from bad effects.

This could also be the spiker patch where the plants shoot spikes at passer-bys that can kill them, which in turn gives them fertilizer .

I'm not happy with the paintjob, but it's "alien" so only that gooefy guy on the history channel that knows about ancient aliens could tell me it's not real looking

Also in the interest of making a bunch of terrain really quick, I sat down for an hour with some old CDs that I'm not using anymore and knocked out 10 more terrain pieces.

There are 2 sand dunes, 2 rough ground, 2 Woodlands, a lava flow, a industrial spot, a water spot (the one with the playing card back pretty visible, and a ruined home/garden.

THe ruined home/garden took the majority of the time as I used the mosaic tile pieces that I had used on a city fountain in my old thread, and hand laid all the individual bricks and glued them into place. Also made a wire armature for a tree/ vine growth which will get flocked later after priming and painting.

Now to wait for it to all dry and then I'll prime them. Probably no paint today.

Nice variety and excellent use of CDs. I've got dozens of those things (that I don't use) and turn them into various terrain projects all the time. They make for great shell holes because they're large enough to fit more than one model in them when they're done.

Well I knocked out two more cd terrains, will prime them later.

Leftmost is a marsh. I plan on murky brackish colors for the glue areas.
The right one is another ruin or sand trap. The main part is a Dust tactics ruined well I grabbed for $2 at MM, just some more mosaic tile bits around the base for more details.

VIK
missed you Sir Wie Gehts? Glad to see you, and thanks for the reply.

So no picture updates currently, but did call warlord games in England to see what's happening with my order. I got a email saying "times almost up to use your coupon" and I hadn't received a confirmation from WG but did get my PayPal receipt. Turns out they got my email wrong in the system so my confirmation was undeliverable, but the order is good and I confirmed getting the free Lt. Speirs figure also. Since it's all on hold till the Chryseis book releases July 1 I was worried that it might be mid July before I get it, but since I'm an American they are shipping it June 23rd, so I might get it before the stores in the U.K.

As for other news I'm looking for some cheap foliage(fake plants) to put on some bases. I'll be hunting for some Spanish moss and small clearance flowers to look like the ginormous plants I see on most BtGoA tables. If I find any deals I'll post them here.

Hey Theo! So this is where you've been hiding out! But where are the zombies?

The CD-terrain pieces are pretty cool. I spy the 3rd edition jungle trees there, too! I may have to rip that idea off since mine are still on sprue all these years later. Well, rip it off when summer gets here, anyway.

Ghar and Concord look good as well, the Ghar especially with the circular ...sensors? picked out. I admit I haven't gotten any further than purchasing the rulebook and templates for GoA and putting them in a pile. Don't know how much further I'll ever get with them since I bought it as a 40k-replacement, which it looks like I may no longer need. I like that AdMech Ghar idea as well - if I ever end up with those kits, I may well rip that idea off you as well.

Had to recheck my German-English dictionary as I thought that meant "to run", but I'm sure there's plenty of colloquial uses for it just like we use terms in America to mean other things too. As for the flowery stuff, I plan on going to hobby lobby this week with my 40% off coupon and seeing what I can find, they have a huge selection that's always changing with the season so usually something on clearance.

I like that AdMech Ghar idea as well - if I ever end up with those kits, I may well rip that idea off you as well.

Those are indeed 3rd edition plants , I cut all mine off the sprues recently and decided that this was as good a time as any to use them. Watch a couple of the videos online for gates of Antares and see what you think. It plays quick, tons of terrain needed, but games are only about an hour or so long with the system they have. I'm sure there's a lot of rules with different types of armor, but that can all be picked up later on. There's also a fan made "Bolter Action" with one page rules to use with 40k figs. I haven't read it all yet, but looks promising.

Well only about 10 minutes of paint time yesterday, but productive. I got the two broken ground terrain pieces done with a quick solid paint color and then a drybrushing. Since the primer was brown anyway two other coats really is all they needed.

Good for a first run anyway. Next time I do one I might grab some larger rock and add a few. I'll need a couple of really large rocks for boulder fields at some point. These don't hinder vision or provide cover, but the do impede movement a tiny bit.

Gonna try and get some more painted before church.

Found these before church.

The 4 should make good alien trees.

Also did some more CDs.

Thanks Grimdork , hope I can find more like them.

So more terrain CDs, this time forest/woods

First two are light woods, as denoted by the wire frame trees, still must figure out how to make the foliage part. The last is heavy forest as denoted by the dowel rod trunks.

Then decided to do some larger pieces, so I took a piece of 12" x 12" Vinyl Commercial Tile (VCT) and marked it out for an 8"x 8", two 4"x8", and a 4"x4" squares.

I then grabbed my old 3rd edition 40K starter box terrain and some glue and got these.

And

Now I'm out of white glue and need more brown primer. These are not primed yet as we had massive downpours for over an hour with flash flooding. Hopefully can rectify the problem in the morning.

I forgot to take pics of some other CD terrain that I did last night/this morning, I'll take those later. I also finished painting some of the other pieces this morning as well. But that'll be for another time.

Thanks Cam, high praise indeed .

So wife got in shower and I brought in the stuff .

Big white plastic piece in back I think will make a nice top for a power station. It might get subdivided into multiple pieces since it's so large though.
Across the table top, more fake foliage, hopefully I can break the glue gun out and get to work on some tomorrow. 2 bags of aquarium rocks, one smooth river rock, the other is some blue crystal looking rocks. I was thinking of doing some strange blue crystals before I saw these . Also hard to see but the packing protector for the bottom of an artificial Christmas tree and some plastic washers. I bought a pack of large tongue depressor sticks and now I have a few smaller craft sized ones to accompany them. And last but not least a small collection of cork tube caps all the small size, but I think I have a plan.

Also coming this week as I continue to bust up broken things at church that have been put in storage in the basement, I'll have 4 teams of fussball players off their rods . I saw the two tables that are busted up (and we got a new "professional table" ) and figure one day I'll make a set of terrain pieces to look like Easter island using these guys .

Speaking of making terrain....

Still able to seperate to make painting easier.

Leaving for work soon. See you'll later.

Borrow away, I have half of one of these containers full of them , so I wasn't worried if I botched it up.

Been using my day off running errands. Shuttling kids to and fro as well. But I got an email from warlordgames with notice of their summer sprue sale. 4 gates of antares sprues as well as sorues of the old wgf zombie survivors for cheap

Ghar reinforcements will most likely be coming .

Thanks AOV, it's a necessary evil when your married.

Well as the Tick's enemy the Mad Bomber would say

BOOM baby!!!

And boom out too.

I had the red parts for a couple of years now in a gift box from Dsteingass, some sort of computer thing-a-ma-bob protector , and they were sitting their looking sad. Which got me thinking of dave and then I had crane envy from his newer builds, and that's my thought process. The rest is just glue, snips, magnets and floral wire. Yes magnets hold the boom out and keep it in place. I'm thinking of using chain instead of cable for this beast, I've got some lovely chain that I believe came from Cam a couple of years ago as well. I'll need to figure out how to attach this and then build the tower for it too.

Well the hunt is still productive. I stopped by hobby lobby last night, left empty handed because the thing I want is in the floral department and floral is 50% off, but then that asterisk got involved and said "Nope, this is one of the things not on sale in floral." So I dropped it all at the register and left.

I went back this morning and used the 40% off coupon and bought one bag. I'll do it individually and get my discount thanks .

So what was it..... well a few things but what I reall was after was tree making gear.

does that look good enough for government work?

I just took my wire trees that I made and shoved little bits down the wire until it was full. Kind of like stringing popcorn to make popcorn rope decorations.

It comes in 3-4 different colors, I got the darker green this time, but I think I'll snag the light browns next time as those look like dead dry plants.

Bag should be enough for many trees. $5.99 a bag, minus 40% because I'm a freakin cheapskate.

I also picked up another can of primer because mine was about out.....but I bought that at Walmart.....because cheapskate.

Also...i recently saw some using dishwashing sponges hacked to bits with green paint in a mixer to make your own tree flock...havent tried that, as I think my wife would rightfully kill me after I greener her mixer permanently...

Thanks Az , your slayers are invited to play on it anytime. The bottle is actually a plastic jar that candies come in from Walgreens. I usually use them to store my small parts in or terrain stuff like sand and gravel.

Thanks Aetare, it's been very fun building these up.

Just a quick stop by, I placed a order from warlord as they have a sprue sale going on. Just picked up 2 Ghar bombard suits and one additional Ghar battle suit. I'll be able to field two units of bombards then. With shipping it came to $25.04, which is cheaper than anywhere else by far and I got to pick my mix.

The zombies, survivors, gangers, and new military guys are all on sale. Definitely reset your cookies and buy it in £££ because YEAH BREXIT!

I found a few, but the ones I liked were $10 a sprig . And they just looked like twigs rolled in glue and then glitter, so I'll just make my own since I'm a cheapskate.

Well I made this yesterday

I used the plastic scrap pieces that were 20 + year old binder combs and mitered the ends to make a rectangle that's 2"x8" then added some wooden craft sticks to give it a little more height and another shadow line. It's supposed to look like a street median where they put plants and stuff.

Obviously the Gardner needs to be fired.
Now these little gems

Came out of a vase of dead flowers

Maybe not in the divider though, but plenty of landscaping options with their irregular shapes.

Crystals look fabulous, can't wait to see where that goes. Could maybe have stuff half buried in the crystals. Car boot sticking out type of thing, make it look like a growth.

I was thinking of multiple small piles of crystals as objectives of some sort. By car boot do you mean the thing that locks a tire in place, or the trunk of the car? Too bad these don't come larger I could see making something like people stuck in amber from fringe .

So I mentioned taking apart a foosball table.....well, theirs lots of little foam rings, so a bit of glue and a strip of plastic card later and we have a tire wall.

I just hope the spray primer doesn't melt it all, but even if it does then it'll be a slag wall .

And also just for fun......still planning my Easter island display heads, made from the foosball players

I've got about 20-30 of these guys that could get chopped up for a field.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I'm still laughing from that picture . I'd be hacking these guys in half if for no other reason than to get rid of the chest part that the metal rod goes through.

Well not much to show progress wise. I did a bit of odds and ends painting, but nothing productive. But while the kids were at teens bible study I went next door to hobby lobby and bought more moss, this time in beige/brown. This will fit more of a dead tree look or tumbleweeds and scrubland/desert bases.

Hopefully some productive time tonight or in the morning.

The sentinels were a great concept, maybe if they ever launch a marvel game that doesn't get binned within a year .

Well, got some more cd terrain done this morning.

Trees, with fallen tree. It will get some grass flocking on the muddy ground once it dries more, but probably a pathway through the trees will be left.

a board full? Well I have about a dozen to the primed stage, few past that, but a whole board?

Well I put paint on another piece, still have to pick out the rubble from the base color. Good old 3rd edition buildings. I didn't want to go for standard colors, and I even broke open the old pot of chestnut ink .

Well no work on the marble yet, but I did put down some more color on the woodland area and touched up the rubble. Also spots on the terrain piece where the basing didn't stick got a couple coats of null oil to look like dark rank puddles of muck.

The old snot green basing will get toned down with flock on top of it and possibly a small path of brown where it's worn from people traipsing through.

Happy Father's Day to all who qualify . I'm sitting in the dark because storms knocked the power out here at 1:30am. My youngest daughter and I have a "Que's" your daddy cooking class at noon. Yep, posted it a week or so ago, not much hobby cash available right now so I only bought 2 Ghar bombards and another battle Ghar so I could make multiple squads.

Just back from the class, we made: a watermelon and feta cheese salad, Mexican street corn, BBQ garlic bread, salmon, ribs, and home made ice cream with Carmel chocolate sauce. Good eating.

Dr H wrote:Nice work on the various scenery pieces, Theo.

Thanks Dr. H, it's working out well I think.

Still no power and no expectation of when it'll be back on. 13,000+ people here in St. Louis out of power and another 11,000 people across the river out right now as well. Our local zip code has only 48 people out of power, so we are low on the priority list. That's the problem of older well established areas, few big trees because of the smaller lots, but when one goes down it messes everything up.

Getting ready to go hit the pool and then Father's Day diner out since.....no power.

Well we weren't bothered as the house was cool until about 11:30am, Lily and I had our cooking class at 12:30 so we went early. My wife my oldest daughter and my son all went over to grandmas house which we normally do on sundays, but they are working on getting her packed to move into an assisted living facility. Coming up on six months after poppy died and she is realizing she needs more company than just us showing up every day for an hour or two. It's been a big strain on all of us, but we're still willing to do whatever we need to. So they stayed there until we were done at cooking class 3:40, and then we all got home. The house was still slightly cooler than outside so we hung out for a little bit and got what chores we could do done. Around 6:30 we went for my Father's Day diner and about 8:00 the power came back on. We had kept the fridge closed and our thermometer said everything stayed below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so luckily our biweekly grocery trip to the store the morning before did not go bad.

Happy Father's Day back at you Dave, did you get anything from Bean?

Well I took some time this morning to hit the trees again with two more washes and then flocked the ground some.

I think jobs a good'un on these, just wondering if I should hit them with a matte sealer? Any suggestions on that would be great.

that lil path looks really nice!

and the really bad thing about power shortages is always the fridge and what could go down the drain...

we once went on vacation...and someone...(not going to put a blaming finger on here...) unplugged the fridge so that no harm could come to that piece...as advised by our beloved mother in law...well... i think at the very least 20 pounds of deep frozen groceries and other stuff greeted us wen we arrived ...you probably could smell the greeting from down the street... note to self... listen, smile and then do otherwise as the in- law says...

I finally bought a generator about 4 years ago, after a particularly brutal outage during the height of summer. Very useful the 2 whole times I've really needed it. (any outage that will last more more than say 6 hours) It has enough juice to run a fridge, a window AC and some lights and fans... and of course the TV Power inverters that can transform a car into a generator of sorts are useful too.

Matte sealer will darken them a little bit, but will also make then a bit more durable. Experiment first?

The floor looks more malachite than marble at this point. Ask Mr. Google for a little visual inspiration here. It would look spectacular.

Great looking scenics, Theo. I admit I was a little dubious at the initial green on that CD base, but the finished product works pretty bloody nicely. Unfortunate to hear about the power outage, but at least you got it back before it destroyed your foodstocks. That's not the first outage you've had in the last few months, is it? Maybe a Generator might be the way to go?

With the sealent, you could always use brush on? Tedious but would allow you to do some areas matt, some gloss.

I don't think it's great for the refridgerator to be unplugged and let idle either.

I searched up that malachite, very neat. Thanks for the info on the sealer

How dare you be dubious of the official for so many years of GW green basing method

I do still have a few jars of 'Ard Coat on the shelf, might give it a shot on a sample piece like Red suggested.

Did a bit on the green marble, but no pics yet. Not sure it came out well, always time to paint over it. Also started the base color on the ground for the larger 8x8" ruin.

Onto further news, my sprue order from Warlordgames is in route. It shipped yesterday morning, so we will see how long a small package takes from England to the US. My larger order should be shipping Friday. Hopefully I'll get one of them by the start of next week as I'm on VACATION! I'm not going anywhere and my wife will be out of town for a teacher conference, so just me and the kids......and paint, and ripping apart the basement because I want my mancave back.

Thanks Kestral, more beyond the gates of Antares figs hopefully real soon. I got my sprue shipping notice Monday, but being in the states means about 10 days. Also tomorrow they should be shipping my Kar'A nine set, Xilos rulebook, and the new rulebook who's name eludes me currently. It would be nice for it all to hit early next week as Sunday I am on vacation and my wife will be out of town. Plenty of painting time to be had.

Sam and Ella's grocery chain would believe in that method of refrigeration.

As stated above, I'm on vacation next week, and the wife will be out of town. I foresee plenty of Zombicide with my kids and painting time when I need a break from all the love. I have 3 or 4 interviews set up as well as I'm looking for something for more satisfying and better pay as well.

Well I had some time this morning, so finished one piece and working on others. More painting over the weekend.

Ruined well with a piece of floral stuff as a alien tree.

First layers on the blown up building are in progress. I was painting in the basement, but most of my paints are upstairs, so just base colors so far.

Lastly a street set up has been primed.

T minus 2 days till vacation

Thanks Azazelx, it's an 8x8 terrain piece that will be useable for gates of Antares or other games.

Camkierhi wrote:These terrain pieces are looking brilliant, and you are knocking them out pretty good. Going to make a really great table.

I hope to really get working on the table this coming week. Maybe even a layout or.......a game .

Well the kids have slept in till 11:00 am, so I had some spare time.

Portable trees. The black discs are about the size of an American quarter. The edges sticking out will be trimmed off, couldn't find my hobby knife.

Entrance to an underground lair, a last second creation that will most likely hit the trash bin. The superglued not holding and I had put the hot glue gun away already.

A little romantic stroll along the beach with my favorite zombie stand in and the start of two alien coconut trees.

Things came out during the stroll along the beach and our relationship got rocky . Boulder field.

Zombie said I could make it up to him by buying him a new car. It's not in the budget, but I said if he dug it out I'll buy him some new tires.....

Just my luck he wants monster truck tires

Totally not zombie related, just two blank grassy discs to junk up with foliage once everything dries.

Thanks for looking

The brick bits are the Mantic battlezone sprues from Mars Attacks. They have the same connections as the regular space battlezone bits.

Hobby knives were on the desk, but the one I wanted to use was upstairs.....and I'm lazy.....and the kids were sleeping so I stayed in my nice junky basement.

So plan for the week is to clean/ clear out the basement and get my hobby on. Do interviews, get a new job that pays more, and call my bosses and tell them where to find their heads.

Sprue order has arrive ,

Not much, one Ghar shooty guy and two Ghar bombardment guys. For $25.04 including shipping it was a good deal. Also I got the shipping notice on Monday and it arrived from ENGLAND (sorry for the caps, but ENGLAND) in 6 days. Also got notice my big order of two books and the Kar'A nine box set shipped out Friday. Hopefully it comes as quick or quicker so I have vacation time to work on them.

With these three guys I now have enough to make two bombardment squads (3 figs per squad) and a squad of 3 assault guys. Unfortunately that means I don't have enough order dice for them .

I'm thinking of redoing the Ghar in metallics....
I'm going to test out Nerdfest09's paint method for his Minotaur marines on one to see if I can come close.

Well I got to the phase two of Damo's Minotaur paint scheme and the new Ghar are looking so good as possible iron warrior bots that I think we have a new paint scheme here.

So here's the old Ghar next to the new ones which I'm painting on sprue.

Free not two were the test colors I did, then one painted with my new base layer of stormhost silver. Then an unprimed model and two primed Ghar.

Close up of the Ghar on sprue after stormhost silver and heavy null oil wash(I was too lazy to head down and grab the pot of badab black).

Im planning on getting the stormhost silver built model washed before I go to the dentist this morning before going with more colors.

Yeah, pretty iconic with terminator and iron warriors. I think it's just the cold hard steel color is engrained in our head.
dsteingass wrote:Those look pretty sweet so far Theo!

Thanks dave

Well yellow is happening...I just can't escape that color for some odd reason.

It'll get another layer (zamesi desert on to of the averland sunset) and probably agrax earth shade on it when I'm back from the dentist. But now I must decide on the glowey bits color for him. I don't want red, I might paint all those parts white and then keep layering black as these guys use crazy unstable energy(disruption) in the game, ought it might be purple and use the black on the armor like true iron warriors .

Thanks Azazelx, the yellow does really bring out the iron spirit in them.

So had a productive painting day.

Some yellow needs touching up, but they all now also have black shoulder pads too . All the better for iron warrior transfers . No hazard stripes. Still debating the energy field color and eye lenses.

I have two more of the assault Ghar suits to repaint, they were the test color ones, but now they will get their bionic replacements and attitude adjustments.

Interview tomorrow, not too excited about it, but would be a better job all around. After that it's time for me to work up at church and when I get home I'll be chauffeuring kids to volleyball and whatnot. Also more work needing to be done in the basement. I thought this was vacation time .

The unwanted humor part might be why I like them so much now that you mention it. The crab legs are definitely strong with their entire faction.
Azazelx wrote:Good luck on the Interview!

Thanks Azazelx, interview went really well. I'm sure I'm moving onto the next step which would be a final round with the district manager. He's actually the one who forwarded my resume to this stores manager to do the initial round. I love that fat orange cat , and its Tuesday which is great, because I hate mondays .

Got the last two suits silvered and two coats of null oiled. Hopefully will get the done today/tonight. Picking the girls up from volleyball practice now.

On a side note I've also been clearing out the basement . I might move my whole setup to the far corner by the furnace and water heater just so the kids have more space to play in. Right now I've got a 7-8'x 15' area cleared that my work space could soon occupy. The only drawback is it's away from the windows and more claustrophobic, but that might improve my lights and pictures.

Edit: finished last two Ghar suits, and went back and painted the ring around the main back power unit black. Also used the Vallejo sand mix to base 9 bases for these guys. They will be drying overnight and then I'll hit them with some washes which will make them look like the two terrain cds I made previously.

Thanks dave, I like the metal and yellow look, and the bases would be perfect if I could add some cactii to them.

kestral wrote:Look good! I prefer ghar infantry, but the yellow and steel look you've got going there is very nice.

, I haven't seen any of the Ghar infantry close up, but I'll be getting some hopefully this week. Both will be the freebies from warlord from ordering the Chryseis shard and Xilos campaign books.

Well I've done it . I've corrupted my son and he has played his first (also my first) game of Beyond the Gates of Antares .

I wrangled him into playing the game and quickly threw out basic terrain on the table. I didn't want him to get bored waiting.

He chose to play the Ghar after I said how hard they are to shoot up. You can see the entire force was painted and I scratch built most of a unit of flutters. They still need wings.

I of course got the Concord blokes.

Points were not counted and we just went to kill each other without any objectives. Zack quickly killed my light support drone and I kept plugging away at one unit of battle Ghar until it fell victim to the below 50% rule and had too many pins. I then shot up another unit until it was almost pinned out but was definitely down. Game went seven turns and if we went by points then I'd have won.

Take away from the game. Lots of terrain needed or shootings going to be king. Ghar must spend 20 points on flitters to drop the crazy effect dice on them instead of their suits.

I really like your silver/yellow Ghar scheme, it looks cool. Basically like they have rolled out of the factory and the yellow has been painted to add some character to them.

Good job getting a game in with Zack as well, those Ghar suits are difficult to take down with the Concord side of the starter, were you basically dependent upon the CDC1(?!? may be wrong name) drones and plasma?

Barzam wrote:Nice job corrupting the youth. Was this basically the contents of the starter box? How hard would you say the game is to pick up and learn?

Basically it was the entire starter box, 3 sprues of Ghar I bought in their sprues sale a few weeks back (or one box of Ghar battle squad/3 models) and the 4 flitters I made from the spare suit heads, some plastic tubing and guitar strings. Very easy to pick up game. I basically was hooked by watching these guys videos.

They are learning the game as well with their series, but play bolt action which is very similar, only using D6's instead of BtGoA using D10's.
Also warlordgames has their learn to play videos which were helpful.

They are mostly grimmer up, but I think their leader has a penchant for the yellow .

The Ghar are notoriously hard to kill, and my son did a great job of rolling saves. The plasma lance guns were the only things that really gave me a shot at killing these beasts, otherwise I needed to hit and him roll a 10 on a D10 to fail his resolution tests. The plasma lance drops them down to an 8.

I think Zack would have had it if he was more aggressive, but he'll learn.

Spent 8+ hours of vacation destroying and rejigging the basement. Very productive day. My workspace is cleaned up and moved to the far side of the basement. The only problem is no carpet under my desk chair and I'm on a slope so every now and then I'm rolling downhill .

Took a break to take the girls to volleyball camp and stopped by the dollar store. $2.17 later I had two bags of white rocks and white sand both which are purposes for floral vases.....me I made snow covered terrain.

I probably have another few days or reorganizing all the things (my gaming stuff), but the kids play area has doubled in size and is now organized into a tv/wii section and a big open area to pour out all the lego or craft things.

In the rearranging I found a 50pack of blank CDs, so guess who will be making more terrain .

Azazelx wrote:Yeah nice work on making your own opponents. He's had a bit of experience on the zombie-slaying side already, hasn't he?

Oh yes, he is a proficient zombie killer . He is very fun of playing the shooty survivor while dad plays the raging lunatic that goes headlong into the fray.

dsteingass wrote:Looks like a great first game! I can see terrain mattering, looks fun! I think you've got some motivation to finish that growing collection of yours!

Beyond the Gates of Antares is a really fun game. You need tons of terrain to get the feel though as most personal weapons have an effective range of 20", a long range (-1 to hit) of 30", and extreme ranges that reach across the field. Open killzones are bad.

So speaking of terrain...

Started painting my outpost I made a few weeks back.

Some light cover from floral bits.

Cake stand temple from pieces relocated in the move.

Dust tactics tank traps

A different color of sand to represent quicksand. Maybe I should add some zombie arms coming out of the sand.

And another attempt at a wood base using different items for the tree.

Still waiting on my BtGoA order from Warlordgames.com. It shipped last Friday, but we will see how it goes.

Thanks Red, yellowish tree things are from a floral/hobby shop, well an old bouquet that has gotten new life. I saw many things like it at the floral part of hobby lobby for anywhere from $2-20 a bunch. Each bunch would have about 10-15 of these sprigs on them. The problem I was having is mounting them to a CD, which is why these were mounted to a small piece of VCT(vinyl commercial tile) which is $0.66 for a 1'x1' square. I just drilled holes in the tile the size of the sprig, added a drop of superglue and jammed them in. Easy peasey lemon squeezey

My order from warlord arrived yesterday and ninja' it's way down to the new work space. It's missing the free LT. Spiers model that should of been sent with it, so I've sent Warlord an email. The books look fantastic, and the two Ghar freebies I got form ordering direct from Warlord are glued to bases already and I've assembled a 5 man team of the Algoryn troopers. Very nice models indeed . I didn't snap a pic yet, but I'll do so in an hour or five when I wake up. They seem to be taller than a marine, which is cool since they are an alien race that is roughly humanoid.

On the warlord Front, they have a special alien mercenary Togg figure available this weekend only, so I might have to order him since he is otherwise an event only model.

I love ultra muscled neck of that guy , or armored chitin, or whatever it's supposed to be. His rules are on their site and he's a pretty big bad . Great accuracy, better than average weapon, and a whirlwind grenade that creates a vortex like area of destruction.

Well the dryer died last night so I got up early and I'm at a laundrymat finishing my laundry. Before I left I snapped a couple scale pics of the BtGoA figs.

Ghar, Concord, Space Marine and Algoryn

Marine (not really close enough for scale) Algoryn and Concord just to show size difference between the two factions.

Edit: more outpost pics for Azazelx,

Roof top

All 4 sides are the same, with the fortress buttresses upside down. Gives space for future spotlights or weapon mounts. One side does have a ladder inside which goes up to the opening on the to. Two algoryn are taking up firing position inside the building. Just basecoats on it currently.

Oh and Ghar freebies

Wow you are productive again, wonderful stuff, like the terrain, makes for an interesting table. These troops look interesting as well, nice models. Togg back there looks very nice, very characterful model. Kinda puts me in mind of a lot of the stuff Minus has been doing with the Eden stuff.

I see some rare Mordheim bitz there too! Although, I'm not sure how those stones mix with the 1890s look of the DUST stones, but I dunno, paint has the power to bring things together.

Well, it's only a few pieces from DUST, the door on the back of the building is from their Quonset huts, and the menu board is part of a connecting wall. The rest is plastic card and old Mordheim building bits.

I really like the Algoryn style, BtGoA is really pumping out good stuff. I didn't like the concept work in the beginning because it seamed trite, but it is all coming together thematically.

Togg was ordered last night, comes to about $13 with shipping and exchange rate. Hopefully I'll see him in a couple weeks.

In the mean time I had 3 uninterrupted hours of painting and watching Arrow on Netflix, so the first squad of Algoryn are done.

I guess that's putting me in a good spot for the monthly challenge . 3 troopers with mag guns, a trooper with a micro-x launcher, a squad leader with Mag pistol and x-sling and a spotter drone. Drone still needs basing, but I'll do all three of them at one time as they could possibly be part of their own unit.

Nice, classic, take on the Algoryn there. I only ever had the metal Algoryn troopers, how did you find the plastics to work with?

Also any plans to get some of the awesome, if somewhat expensive, Algoryn skimmers?

Thanks , I though about other colors for them, especially Purple, but just went with the standard red and black. They might get some white/bone markings on their armor in the future though.

I've been looking at ALL the factions and expanding my collection, but until I get a new job my funds are not going to allow me to buy the big ticket items. Also the Boromites and other armies are waiting for plastic releases. Tanks and skimmers will also wait as I enjoyed games without big vehicles for a long time (2nd edition 40k).

The Algoryn plastics were easy to work with, but like the Concord there are matching arm sets for the guns. Not as much versatility as a GW kit, but still seperate head, arms, leg sets and front and back chest parts. Enough variety for a good sized force. Also between the 3algoryn squads I'll have different specialist weapons and squad leader weapons, all included in the set. The only thing I didn't like was the heads fit strangely with their masks getting in the way of the armor. It makes positioning the head difficult to line up with gun levels for aiming.

Another difference I noted inthe Kar'A nine set was that the dice for the Concord were different. Different shade of green and different color for the wording. Still easy enough to tell green dice from maroon dice from grey dice, but one of my OCD issues.

If anyone is starting out with the game I'd probably suggest getting the Kar'A nine set as it has a basic get started rulebook, two more equal forces and all the templates, dice and pin markers you'd need. Buying 2 would be better for larger games, but one set would be fine.

Thanks Azazelx, the red is from shadows of brimstone paint set I got on clearance from Miniaturemarket a while back. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore , so I just shot armypainter an email asking if they just rebranded a color (chaotic red looked closest), or if they have them seperate. I couldn't find it on their website, but the search feature was not working.

I basecoated 3 more Algoryn and two more drones today before leaving to check out the other FLGS which stocks all the armypainter stuff.

Also got cash for my birthday from my parents , so now the planning must begin on how to spend it.

1. Zombicide green horde, I put in $1, but I think my total would be like $175 if I got the things I want. Though I might just skip it totally as I enjoy the contemporary version more. There are some good sculpts, but a majority of the stretch goals were meh to me.

2. More gates of Antares. This is the front runner right now, the question is do I bulk out one force or get a mix of all the things?

3. Supply haul. I need to replenish some stuff, and now that there is room in the basement I could really deck the place out, or at least make things nicer.

4. Any suggestions?

You can do what you like (happy belated birthday btw) however, investments in tools, stock plastic, lights, workbenches and other so-called "Capitol" investsments always pay off on the next kit or box of army men. I thank myself every single day I walk down here to this studio.

The answer is clear to me. 40k 8th Edition starter box set.

More seriously though - as far as tools, materiel, etc goes - if you need something, I'd always heartily say to go ahead and get it, but also avoid buying things "just because." So lamp(s) with Daylight bulbs, restock of needed stuff, etc, shelving, etc - go for it. Wall-mounted acrylic nail polish racks are great for paints!

I have been talking about a light box a bit , and the new workspace has improved the comfort level.

My chair is great, but the new workspace is on a real slant of the basement floor and unless my feet are planted I roll away from my desk. Funny to watch, not so funny when trying to paint . I might get a small throw rug for under the desk. That could also help in winter with cold concrete.

Thanks everyone for the imput . I basecoated the rest of the Algoryn while the repair guy was working on the dryer. He needs to get us a new idler pulley which will take a day or two. Also dug out one enforcer for a comparison pic for Josh.

Seriously. What could you cross-use the contents of 8th for in GoA? Visually, they could be used with the rules for Algoryn or Concord. They're not adorned in crazy numbers of skulls, so they're much more sci-fi trooper than regular Space Marines.

My enforcers are from the box set, and have all been assembled long ago so I'm not sure if the chest widths are the same, but the aesthetics look like they might fit well. Actually it looks like the same designer worked on both.

Fireworks are actually a running joke with my kids. When they were really young I convinced them all that the fireworks and get together were for my birthday because I am so AWESOME! It lasted a few years .

As for a spot color I was thinking of adding a bone white or straight white accent markings like clan markings to their armor, I just wanted to get more base colors done and then decide how to proceed.

There's actually rules for Bolter Action, a 40k version of the bolt action system. If I do anything I'll go that route with my old stuff. The DI box sets can sit on the shelf at the store . GW got enough of my money over the years.

Bolt action/Gates of Antares is a fast fun game to play. And you could have your tank fix with just about any army you wanted too. I hear the bolt action tanks aren't great, but lots of manufacturers to use.

Bolt action is the same as BtGoA, except it uses D6s and the armies have roughly similar weapons. BtGoA has D10s for more variety because some people's weapons are more powerful and some have better armor. So if you are familiar with bolt action there will be a lot of crossover.

GrimDork wrote:Birthday? Grats.

I've also had to change my email with the new internet service we got, so I'm hoping for another discount coupon from them(warlord) for joining the forum and newsletter.

It looks fun, fast and will give lots of chance to learn history and modeling skills to boot.

No advancement on projects today either. I am thinking of redoing the Concord dudes in more of a jungle theme. Green and black armor, since I have extras from my Kar'A nine set I'll try one unit and decide once I'm done with the Algoryn.

Quick update while getting lunch ready.

Stopped by miniaturemarket's store on the way back from working at church. They were about to start a magic the gathering tournament, so super busy. Nothing great out, but always a few gems that I've been eyeing and they did some price drops so.

Grabbed the Flash/green arrow expansion for BMG ($5 down from $10). I've been watching it for a few months and someone bought the other art cover one so since this was the last and they dropped the price I grabbed it, which spurred on other purchases. They still had 3 of the other cover for $5 each, but I liked this more than the touched up photo cover. Not really "damaged" in my opinion as the corners just have the slight bend to them that all game books get from being stood upright after a while or being packed in too tightly of a box. I'll have to start looking more at this game now that I have it and the main BMG book and Graven makes the minis and game look too awesome .

Also in the loot bag are three figs from Guildball. I picked up one butchers guild guy and two mortician guild dudes today for $1,$3 and $3 each. All the parts look to be there, so bonus. I grabbed a single butcher guy a few months back for a couple bucks as well, so hopefully good boosters to eventually build teams with.

I'm going to try and get some priming done before I leave for work tonight, and maybe some more paint on the algoryns as well.

Da Boss wrote:Wow, last time I checked BtGoA was all metals, those new plastics look great.

A lot of their stuff is metal still, but they are porting over the main units to plastic. The starter set has plastic Ghar and plastic Concord troops. kar' A nine has plastic Concord (same ones) and plastic Algoryn. This week saw the release of the plastic Freeborn troops. They just showed a ton of newer units coming out and I believe them to mainly be plastics. I think the general rule now will be plastic troops and common vehicles (some of the drones are used by multiple armies) with heavy weapons and 1 per army type things being metal still.

GrimDork wrote:It's not just you, I had that same notion

But it's better for you because you don't have to pay sales tax.

I got some time to paint, wasted a couple hours playing an old computer game, but then got to cracking.

Squads 2 and 3 have all their base colors done and the black highlighted with dark grey. Base edges are painted with scorched brown. If I get time I'll touch up some of the red add sand to the base and after that dries I can wash the whole thing (including the sand) with strong tone. Last to do will be the lime green lenses.

The three guildball guys got built(pain in the ) and primed yesterday. Not sure where they will wind up in the que, more of one of the projects for far in the future.

Yep . My collection (read as hoard) of stuff is so eclectic that it is silly. Get what I like and eventually possibly use it all.

Not sure where that came from but very true.

Well as I said I stopped off and grabbed my loot this morning accompanied by my youngest daughter Lily who bought a $5 game for herself and her siblings. Just some picture card game with funny drawings that they have to describe to the others and the others have to guess what it is. I picked up the Saturday deal of the day DUST tactics Heavy Red Command, which are 3 crippled Russian soldiers returned to battle inside powered armor suits. Similar to a marine dreadnought in concept, just not a totally dead dude.

I also grabbed a DUST tactics operation Icarus on clearance for $12. It comes with 3 Quonset huts a German character and an American character. I never picked one of these up before since they still had it at $45 or so until just recently. I had the Quonset huts before but used them for other terrain.

I wish I would have grabbed more of the super cheap Heavy red command guys . They have a molded star on their chest armor that would make these ideal goblin dreadnought for a goblin rebel army . Well I'm sure this will pop up again at some time in the future.

My current work schedule means I get home at 11:45-1:50 every night. By the time I'm in the door, shoes off and headed to take a shower it's midnight and perfect time to check as I plug my phone in to charge.

There is very little showing of the pilots, which can be covered by closing the hatch, so not much work needed on them. They also swivel and pivot up and down at the crotch, so there's plenty of potential to paint up a few and have slight variance in the poses. There's also 3 different weapons in the set of 3 models. It wouldn't take much to orkify these. DUST has great potential for orky contraptioningization.

Yeah, the suits are great, lots of details to them.

All three squads are now tabletop ready.

I'm thinking of adding another spot color. Probably to the head crests and to the chest emblem. Suggestions are welcome. Right now I'm leaning towards either a bone color or gold.

Also will probably try and use grass tufts for the first time once I pick some up this week.

Nice work on the troops, brother. And I look forward to the finished DUST suits.

Think maybe the weapons could be a different color, that would help thing's pop a bit if that's what you're looking for.

I wanted to keep it matched, hopefully the pop comes from the ammunition and not the fashion sense .

Well, I took a chance with demonette skin for the accent color. I also used some Balthasar gold on the helmet and chest symbol.

The targeter drone bases are still wet, but will get matched to the squads.

Looking good.

GoA involves notably less models than 40k doesn't it? So that batch represents a fair chunk of army?

Yeah, the gold works well and is harmonious with the deep red.

Well it depends on what size battle you want. As is I have 403pts of Algoryn, which isn't even a scouting force. The smallest battle is 500 points, but the starter sets (main box) has about 370points of Ghar vs over 500 points of concord. The game scales well with battle increments at 250 points each level. Each level gives more options, more strategic or auxiliary assets and more troops. The game we played was small and tactical which we enjoyed.

Azazelx wrote:Yeah, the gold works well and is harmonious with the deep red.

Thanks , here's a closeup of the purple and gold. Hopefully it helps.

I was wondering, is Beyond the Gates of Antares a skirmish game like Infinity? Or is it an straight up wargame like 40k?

The gold looks good, but it's hard to see the purple against the maroon. That might just be a function of my monitor, though.

It is more of a mass battle game like 40k, from the same inventor too .

JoshInJapan wrote:The gold looks good, but it's hard to see the purple against the maroon. That might just be a function of my monitor, though.

It's a really light purple in the center of their helmets, you may need to adjust your dials.

No progress, and little sleep, so just a fast answer session right now. I am still looking at what next to buy. While I like the ghar, I think Algoryn are probably the army to build up as I like how the paint turned out. Though I think I'm going to try some more color changes for the Concord to see if I fall for that trick. They are the most bulked out army right now with more models out and they are also the most populous army in the game.

So messing about with spare Concord guys, I still cannot find THAT color pattern which makes me say it's time to repaint all of what I've done so far. Also painted up one of the commie battlesuits. In DUST they call them turtles, I think they look more like Kermit the frog.

Just base colors for right now on the suit as I've been busy this weekend. All the black will get turned to gunmetals. I also went with a white colored star (ushabti bone) instead of red.

So colors for the Concord I'd like to stick with greens, or do greys (space nazis), but my creative juices are a bit hamstrung right now.

Well spent more time trying to organize the hoard. While doing so I finally found my container of cocktail sticks. Silly that cocktail sticks held up a project, but I needed the tips to complete my Ghar flitter unit wings. One of the red cocktail sticks are across the bases to see what it started as. The flitters themselves are made up of spare heads from the Ghar units and some plastic rod tubing to make the jets. Four tips from the cocktail sticks make the wings and some guitar string to make the the tail and have it "flying"

While the unit may not seem important, it has a real practice use. The four flitters cost only 20 points. Which give the Ghar another action dice, and a unit to put their distortion dice on if we are unlucky enough to draw it for ourselves. Otherwise if the die is drawn for the enemy then I can actually use these guys to move forward and increase the hitting chance of the Ghar when shooting (possibly, as they are not very reliable).

Also mailman just dropped off my packages from warlord games. My Togg figure and my missing Lt Speirs. Pics later hopefully.

Toggs a big one he is.

Lt. Speirs from band of brothers will stay in his package until such time as I start an American army or find a loving home for him.

Well I picked up stirland mud and am trying it out on Togg's base. As well as trying it out on the bases of the guildball figs I recently got. I wanted to paint and I'm stuck on Beyond the Gates of Antares figs with finding a color I like, so I started to paint up the two guild ball mortician crew guys I have.

Bone Saw on the left and Ghast on the right. Skin will probably get one shade lighter as I see these guys as not getting out into the sun too often. Also going for darker and duller colors as I see them more as grave robbers than anything else. I know nothing about the game or the story, but that's how I imagine them. Clothes colors are only half way base colored.

Well BtGoA is sidelined for a while as I cannot decide how to expand or if I will expand the armies. So I guess this thread will instead become my painting thread, and the old one might just become my building thread, or should I just do it all here again and let the old thread move onto oblivion?

Either way the painting bug has got me again so I did a little more work on the guild ball morticians. Not sure if I'll ever buy into the game, but they are fun models for sure.

Bone Saw (not the Macho Man Randy Savage version )
[u]

At 43 years old I'm finally beginning to learn how to paint . A lot is because I'm taking the time to watch video clips online. I'll never be as good as some others here, but I'm feeling a lot better about my actual skills.

And Ghast

Both models have a long way to go yet, but they are a quantum leap ahead for me. I hit all the weapons with a single coat of leadbelcher, Bone Saw's blades just look different colors because of the angle the light is hitting it. Still need to knock down the color of the grass with agrax wash, it got too bright for my taste with the greens I chose and the tyrant skull dry brush.

I have not even seen this game played, I guess I'll go check out some YouTube vids

The purple does stand out , I might tone it down, but for now it's done.

Well it's been a few days. Not much sleep as all three of my kids and around 170 others went to church camp Monday morning and I got to load all their luggage (everyone's) into two huge trailers. With the heat we've been having, lack of sleep and missing the kids I've worn myself out. Finally got my day off today and wound up taking my wife's refrigerator, microwave and kurig coffee maker to her school and set it up in her classroom. Took the last two hours to do some painting for myself. I picked up some blue paints this week after watching the warhammertv video on how to paint a crimson fist space marine armor and wanted to try it out. Of course I didn't feel like painting a marine though , so what else should I paint in crimson fist colors besides their greatest nemesis....an ork or orc as this case would be.

One of the new bloodbowl orcs. I think I'll paint one knuckle duster red when I pick up those colors and name this team the Crumpin' Fist.

Comments welcome as this is the first time I've really tried painting an Orc (non-Mantic) and I've never done checkers before either.

 Azazelx wrote:

that's what I get for trying to type too fast and not thinking straight. My wife has been a teacher for the last 17 years and year 18 begins in a couple weeks. Each year they empty their classrooms over the summer so the janitors can strip and relax the floors and do needed maintenance. My wife has her room tricked out with a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. During her lunch period other teachers come to her classroom and hang out because it's all set up and they don't have to hang out with loser teachers in the teacher lounge . It's nice for her since she is trapped in that room basically 8+ hours a day and makes it a little more like home.

I was able to do a second Orc bloodbowl fig this morning. This is usually how I decide if I'll continue a project, if I can duplicate the results a second time. Still needs edge highlights on the metal, basing and I'm still trying to think of how to get red onto the model besides blood.

Started the armor on two more Orc players before leaving for work. I'm thinking of keeping it blue everywhere, except changing the skull chest/back/face plates to a different color. Not sure if I should do red (crimson fists become da crumpin' fists) or silver/boltgun metal and come up with something else.

Also stopped by a local shop Game Nite and looked around some. They had two copies of Betrayal at Calth for $99 each. I made my willpower save, but I really want to go back and get them both . I love mark IV armor, and this would net me 60 tactical marines, 10 cataphracti terminators, 2 contemptors and 2 each of 2 special characters. I have a full company of mark IV marines from forgeworld red scorpions when they were released. It's hard to pass that up, especially with the point system they use I'd get almost another $20 certificate. They normally don't do discounts, so most of my buys go to miniature market. I'm also right at getting a $10 certificate from them, so I'm really tempted.

I do not like the look of mixed old marines and nu marines in the same army, and I don't want to build a whole new army after building more than half a chapter so if I buy any more marines it will be the old school guys and they are telling RG to F-off.

Okay, I'm waivering. What first founding chapter used mark IV armor? I know I could do any group I wanted, but if anyone has a list or knows which chapters had a penchant for that mark it could sway me. Right now I'm leaning blood angel, night lords, iron warriors (though I think they wore more mark II and III. I'm even contemplating Ultras.

I'm currently painting up rest of my off Blood Bowl team. Skins are done, almost all of the blue armor base coat is done. Very limited time to mess around with these guys over the last week.

MKIV? You've got a lot of options with that. Especially given how GW have written up the size of the legions and how individual chapters of those legions were supplied, resupplied and upgraded at different times.

Even though Prospero came with Thousand Sons, I think of MKIV As "their" armour rather than MKIII.

Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors wore it as well as MKIII (and look the business in it).
Iron Hands (who apparently still produce the stuff in the 40k era).
Word Bearers, Ultras, Space Wolves, Alpha Legion. Blood and Dark Angels, Emperor's Children, Night Lords, Sons of Horus....

Uh... yeah. So those 12 Legions are ones I'd personally happily model and paint in MKIV. Some I'd definitely give a variety of marks to, especially like Iron Warriors, Space Wolves, Iron Hands, while others I might easily go more exclusive - Sons of Horus, Alpha Legion, Thousand Sons.
Legions like the Ultras and Fists are especially large enough to choose whatever you like.

I'd say whittle it down to the ones that you like the most based on colour scheme and fluff. Even within Colour Scheme there's a lot of variety within legions with their chapter differences and so forth.

Spoiler:

Plenty more out there - Just google away!

I know many chapters wore different marks, but I still can't get over certain types being specifically favored by certain chapters. I see iron warriors in III and death guard in II. Oh well, I've decided to not do more marines.

Watching 2Dsick's thread made me dig out some guard tanks. I'm trying his method out, looking more desert themed compared to daves jungle troop colors. Here's the test off of a Russ. It's shown with the orcs that I've been slowly chugging away on.

Sorry for slow updates. Not a lot of free time lately. Life has been full of grandmothers, in laws, guns, car chases, police, lawyers and stupid cats waking me up after two hours of sleep. Everyone is alive and fine, even the cat. This morning was me taking it easy and doing next to nothing to allow for body and mind to heal up.

I did lay down more paint on the Russ, all armor plates are done, now I just need to do weapons, find tracks, and come up with weathering ideas. I also started painting up another crashed Aquila lander and have one section pretty well done to match the tank.

In other news I picked up a Nuhu mandarin for my BtGoA concord army this morning and just stopped by a FLGS an bought a couple new cheap brushes and lahmian medium to try that out this week.

I must have been Hitler in a previous life for all this karma
Spoiler:
all those things were/are linked unfortunately . Grandma has started to lose it and has been moved into assisted living. She picked the place months ago and had visited it 5-6 times. She has an infection which amped up her anxiety and dementia, unfortunately it was right when we had to inform her that the doctors said she had to have 24 hour care and could not go back home and would be staying permanently at the assisted living. All 3 grandkids and their spouses were there to tell her. Nanny was not happy with any of us and threatened to call her son/my father in law. My father in law who is Nannys only child but has been written out of the will for 20+ years and didn't bother to show up for grandpas funeral decided this was his chance to get back in the will so he rushed over to take her out of the assisted living home. When he called us to get a key to her house we had to tell him he couldn't take her and that someone (him since he would take her out) had to stay with her 24/7. He said he didn't care and he had his 9mm and was getting her out of there and anybody who got in the way would get it. So coos were called, police chases and grandma getting taken out of my father in laws car on the highway ensued. Much more drama over the last week.

Little time today to paint, but all the parts of the crashed aquila that I could find have paint now.

I need to figure where I can do some splash color. I was thinking of the wing tips in black, and once I determine my army badge then it will get stripes to match. Any suggestions are as always welcome.

Oh, right. I didn't quite expect it all those aspects to be so involved together (except the cat, or is the cat behind it all, they are evil after all).
Some people have a funny way of thinking sometimes.
Still. glad nobody was hurt in the end.

Good work on the crash.
For colours, a deep blue-purple would work against the yellowy armour colour. Or a deep red to contrast with the cockpit green.

I'd keep my eye on that cat, it's planning to eat your face one day.

Cat's telling you to up your game. You need to be a better pet to it. Petting a cat helps reduce stress y'know. Lowers blood pressure and all that. Maybe the cat was trying to help. Certainly it doesn't want to have to go through the effort to train another human to serve it. (Yes, I understand Cat Logic... which is why I have a dog and a couple of parrots. )

Looks like you are missing just a couple of tail fin parts. If nothing else you could scratch build them for that Aquila.

It is my saving grace the last few weeks. Something satisfying about sitting and painting while watching person of interest or some other show on Netflix.

Might try the purple, though red has been calling me so much I've been looking at blood angels.

The cat was grandmas, it was lonely living in the house by itself while nanny was in the assisted living place. We tried taking it to live with nanny there, but it was all stressed out and keeping nanny up all night. So we adopted it even though all five of us are allergic. The night of the big brewhaha nanny demanded to have the cat back at home with her, so we had to shove it in a box and take it over there. It cried and meowed all night and the next morning nanny told us to come get the damn thing again . Poor cat , it has been in our house for over a week now and has just finally jumped up onto my lap once yesterday. It is starting to approach us more and let us rub it.

Yeah I don't believe in Karma, this is just my cross to carry.

Okay here's the rest of the motor pool that was in the same box as the Aquila.

I just basecoated the really busted up chimera, more to do later.

Funny cat story
Spoiler:

So grandma has always called "Smokey" a boy cat. Though some times she would slip up and call it her (she's 89, and has had many cats over her lifetime). We took the cat in and my wife was petting it and said she couldn't see a penis on it and thought it was a girl. She called the vet and they said the initial paperwork said it was a boy, but all the other visits over its 14 year life show female. so we told grandma and she was laughing hysterically. So we started calling it a girl for the last week and it has been meowing like crazy. So my wife took it to get its rabies shots updated this week. The doctor said it was definitely a boy, but it took a while to locate his penis which is up high on his chest instead of down between his legs, and he is not well endowed . So the cat is back to being back to being a boy).

I am the proud father of a transgender cat ).

Cats are definitely weird, but we can't have a dog because of our yard being small, not fully fenced and right by a big road.

Cats are awesome and will outlive all humans except those cryogenically frozen or turned into holograms as anyone who ever watched Red Dwarf could tell you . These have been in my boxes of shame for over a decade, I had to brush layers of dust off of them before painting for them to be salvageable. Now I need to find tracks .

Well I stopped by MM this morning to grab some more Zandri Dust paint and I also checked the other things. I keep picking up packs of Dark Age figures. I think there's enough for a full game of outcasts, 7 figs, but one is a saint luke character and one is a saint mark character. The whole lot would be $25, and I'd never get to play and don't have the books. I guess they could make neat inquisitorial henchmen , but I've picked them up and put them back on at least 6 trips. I did find a pack of Dystopian wars Canadian tanks (6) Wolfe tanks for $5. I forget what the skitarii tracked guys are called, but this could be the start of a squad of counts as dudes. Or mobile heavy weapon carry bits. Picks for size and ideas.

Clearly you just need to bite the bullet and buy them for your Inq Warband next time you're there. Then you can stop staring at them!

When I was in my 20's there were a few times I wanted to buy something, but decided "nahhhhh" at the time, and then later decided I wanted them, went back (days or weeks later) and they were gone - never to be gotten again.

Marouda told me then that if I thought I was going to regret not buying a thing, then I should just get it. I've kept that bit of advice in mind ever since, and it's been rare that I've had that kind of situational regret come around again.

So buy the Dark Age models. $25 isn't a huge amount, and they'll make nice painting palette cleansers.

Quite right, in fact they had old confrontation posters of wolfen for $5 forever at MM. I always was going to buy one for the basement, but kept thinking "Next time". I went in a few weeks ago and they had rearranged everything and I guess they finally pitched them .

Yeah, kind of my feeling too you guys are no good for my budget

Well before I went to work yesterday I painted up one of the little tankettes.

The other 5 are all base coated and agraxed. Should be able to finish them in the A.M. Maybe before I go to MM.

You even use an airbrush, so I'm definitely not tackling 18 with a brush. Watching a YouTube of someone doing that tan color is what got me interested In trying it out. YouTube is my enemy.

You've been busy with Titan forging, so no worries . Appreciate the encouragement though.

Well I started playing with some plastic rod, then glue, and a bits box dig. Lots more to do on the weapon platform, but the skeleton of the lascannon segway is assembled. The precast hole on the top of the tank was the perfect size for a magnet, so the white tube base of the gun has a magnet in it as well.

I think height wise it works for both Eisenkern and catchans. The laser is an extra from some marine vehicle. I also have extra plasma cannons and assault cannons, so we might have choices.

Gun carriages look brilliant, been batting a similar idea around for ages, nice find on the Dys Tanks, still envy the close proximity to MM.

Oh, had a thought, you could throw servators torsos on these, but one of my ideas for ages has been as a stretcher bearer. Not much use in game I guess, but a nice little dio of a medic running along side. I mean after all Catachans must weigh a ton with all those bulky muscles.

The servitor idea was my first thought, but then I remembered everything looks better with guns .

The stretcher idea is also a good one, but the eisenkern have little walking stretchers for wounded and ammo toting, a trip through theos way back machine

These are the new ones aren't they?? the grey knights ones had the tops of 20 or so pages stuck together, but careful tearing separated them without too much damage. The other two had slight damage to the covers, but nothing more than what they'd get transported around in a book bag.

Thanks , there's always little gems to be found in just about any range. Luckily for me miniaturemarket gets most of the ranges and I can sift through the stuff without spending a fortune.

Speaking if not spending a fortune, I was looking for parts when I saw an old purchase covered in dust crying on the shelf. It lamented the fact that it never got chopped up for the old Necromunda games, and now a new edition is coming out and it didn't think it was going to ever get attention.

It's a Melissa and Doug train bridge that raises and lowers by turning of a crank. It has now been moved to the front of the que. I believe I ordered this a few years ago for about $16 with shipping. Since taking that pic this morning it has been completely disassembled. The wooden train rails in it have been removed and new wider plastic bridge decking is being installed. I also removed some plastic tabs that kept it from lowering too far. It can now be lowered down below parallel. It's also now over 3" wide on the bridge deck instead of less than 2".

These are the new ones aren't they?? the grey knights ones had the tops of 20 or so pages stuck together, but careful tearing separated them without too much damage. The other two had slight damage to the covers, but nothing more than what they'd get transported around in a book bag.

Unless the art is different on the US versions I believe those are 7th edition codexes, the new Space Marine one has a Primaris Marine on the front.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, the re-used art on both the Grey Knight and Chaos Marine codex is a bit of a poor move on GW's part.

Well I felt so bad about buying old things that I cured it (temporarily) by buying something new. I picked up Test of Honour from Miniaturemarket.com today. 35 more figs to paint . They will eventually be part of my Asian themed Kings of War army. I have plenty for it, I just need to make a start on them. Of course that will be after I finish the Orc Bloodbowl team (I'm planning on working on them after work tonight/tomorrow morning) and the Necromunda bridge which the cat may or may not have broken overnight while I slept .

Well, on the bright side you got a hell of a deal on the old codexes, and I'd be happy as hell to get them for that price, even if they were for 7th. I understand the disappointment, though.

On a brighter note, that rail bridge thingy looks bloody awesome. Cant wait to see what you do with it.

I'm running into the stupid problem of glue not sticking to it though. I'll break out the hot glue gun tomorrow and try that, but I've roughed up the edges, used plastic glue, gorilla glue(some hold) and super glue. I need to grab some epoxy from the store.

I didn't have any 7th edition rule books anyway, so not a huge deal. Just not as cool of a buy.

You might need to use ABS glue. Which is super toxic hardware store stuff.

Nails it is . I tried to use the screws that held it together to put it back, but the base I'm using for the bridge deck just splinters . The gorilla glue was holding until it got bumped by my butterfingers.

Liquid Nails?

Use superglue, and sprinkle with bi-carb powder, the chemical reaction does something, warning gets hot.

i often use a combination of first PVA and then i add superglue...after that only brute force can take it apart...

Nope, real nails and real hammer . I was going to take out some frustrations

Might give that a shot later today.

Was going up to work at church this morning to get last minute things done and tire blew out. Big hole in the sidewall. Called AAA after my jack kept slipping out. They couldn't get the lug nuts off . Towed to tire place which opens in an hour. They'll probably have to cut the lug stems off and put new ones on. morning. Bought a lottery ticket to the 1/2 billion dollar powerball for tonight. Luck has to change sometime right?

Just the car. It's a Volvo and supposedly notorious for the lug nuts not coming loose easily. They tried for 1.5 hours to get them off after AAA tried for 20 minutes with no success at all. They need to get one of the guys torque force multipliers to break them off, which will probably mean needing a new hub, lug bolts and all. Of course they cannot get that tool till Monday at earliest. They bent a $400 breaker bar as the 200lb guy was hopping up and down on it to try and get more force to pop it loose. I called the Volvo dealership and they just laughed saying they never have a problem. Have it towed here (about $100) and we will do it at $150/ hour labor(minimum 2hours) plus parts, new tire (couple hundred there) and we can get it done SOMETIME this week .

So I walked home and did a bit of work on a bridge so I can get over it.

Bridge deck with mantic plates on top of doubled up bases from arcane legions as the back bone to the deck. Finally got it all glued and screwed together to hold it in place.

Lowest bridge position

Bridge up

Troll house under the bridge.

Damn. At least the car was just a blowout and you didn't lose control or have anyone get hurt, I guess. The bridge is looking good, though!

Bridge looking great.

Once long ago, had a Renault that the nuts seized on, combo of high end socket set, 8ft scaffold pole and 300lb gorilla (me), wife thought the car was going to flip over, but got it in the end. Local garage air ratchet could not touch it.

I didn't hit anything, but it was starting to pull really hard to the right, so it was a matter of time.

I looked it up on the net and my 2001 Volvo v70 seems to have this problem on that front right tire , they even have a replacement kit and different bolts for it.

You the man Shaso .

Well my wife's car broke down when she picked me up last night from work. Some camshaft selenoid thingy. It was working fine this morning and eventually (20 minutes of fiddling with it) got us home, but just another bump in life. God says he doesn't give us more than we can handle, but some day I want to have a little chat with him about that .

While chilling out this morning I came across a cool video for a workbench that I'd love to eventually build for myself as a gaming table. I say eventually as my basement floor is not level enough for this to b practical, but maybe one of you all would enjoy it.
