I've been posting stuff here for a while now, so thought it was high time I started my own thread to keep everything in one place. I play Blood Angels so most of what I'll be posting will be them, but I do occasionally deviate and paint some Orks, Skitarii, misc Imperial Agents etc.

I won't delve too deep into the archives (you can see a bit more on my website http://www.themightybrush.com) but here are a few of my most recent completed projects.

Woah, dude. so much good stuff. I mist jay, the thing that jumps out the most are those incredibly cool 'clean' sanguinary guard. And you even managed to make that plastic relic dread look good. I always though those proportions were just a tad off compared to the Forgeworld ones. But you paint job does it justice.

And well, lovely shades of red overall.

Here's the full bits list:

- Pistol from Sternguard kit
- Head from Deathwatch kit (with green stuff sculpted hair)
- Torso is from BA tactical squad with the tabbard resculpted to fit the flow of the model
- Legs from Sanguinary Guard, with a sculpted chapter symbol on left leg
- Iron Halo from clam pack captain
- Backpack from multi-part commander
- Cloak from Forge World Loken
- Shoulder pads from BA upgrade spure and Sanguinary Guard kit

I've always loved the Raptors scheme, but you are killin it man. Everything looks fantastic and super consistent, and your use of various spot colors on occasion really helps keep things interesting too. Your general feel for contrast and saturations is very strong. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

Have to agree with MajorTom, you truly are killing this raptors scheme. The paintwork is excellent! So often I see painters airbrush lazily with intent to get finishes like you've achieved, and it usually looks lackluster or tacky. Your painting style is considerate, subtle yet really makes everything pop super well!

Thanks man! As for the colours, I did a tutorial!

And now it's back to the beloved boys in red.

I promised when I sold my Blood Angels that I would never wholly abandon the Sons of Sanguinius. The opportunity to come back to them was presented by a good friend of mine, who after buying a few items from my collection commissioned me to paint these two Xiphon Interceptors. And very enjoyable to paint they were too! I hope he likes them and that they serve him well. We'll find out in a couple of weeks as I'm delivering them in person!

Love what you did with the cockpit lighting... very nice indeed and never seen it done quite that way before. As with your raptors, beautiful saturations and modulation (which you wisely toned down the gradient extremes for the red), though if I may offer one small critique, I think the blacks could be a bit deeper or more modulated, a touch flat grey compared to the rest.

Awesome job as usual -

Luther's Mighty Brush @ 2018/03/31 11:46:23

Post by: LutherMax

Thanks MajorTom! Fair point about the black/grey. The models are actually a bit darker in reality than in these pics (the stand makes them quite close to the lamp, which is fixed to the top of the light box), so the black/grey does seem deeper – but I agree a bit more contrast on those areas would be good.

Luther's Mighty Brush @ 2018/04/02 18:28:49

 whalemusic360 wrote:

The pilots and cockpit interior were painted dark blue, and the pilot was painted white on his front side only to give the impression of being lit from the controls, yes. The cockpit glass was tinted blue-green with ink to add to this effect, getting darker and more opaque towards the edges that meet the fuselage.

Hi guys, I'm back after a forced hiatus due to (another) arm injury. I was a bit worried about further loss of movement and feeling but all seems to be well after about a month of recovery

I thought I'd test out my painting hand and ease myself in with a single model, so here is the first HQ character I've completed for the Raptors – Lieutenant Korik. I wanted to keep him consistent with the troops but I did spend a little bit longer over the highlights and details.

Hope you like him!

Well I did write this little tutorial: https://www.themightybrush.com/how-to-paint-raptors-space-marines/

Most of it is the same for vehicles except I spray the Athonian Camoshade - using it more like a tint - and then use dark brown oil wash for recess shading. The chipping is done with a sponge and then there’s some light rust oil wash around the bottom.

And now, without much further ado, the Space Marine equivalent of the US Army Bradley IFV.

This was a funny project. It went from nothing to almost finished in four hours, and then I spent probably three times that long detailing and weathering it – but at the same time trying to keep the weathering subtle. I figured it would be good practice for the relic vehicles I will be painting in the future.

Wow Luthermax your painting skills are inspiring!

Especially the Xiphon Interceptors, the cockpits are fantastic.
I was going to paint my cockpits of my Vipers in my blog but after seeing your interceptors I might have to rethink that.

I am amazed you could glaze the cockpit windows so well without the colour dispersing the sides and corners.

Bloody well done!

Thanks for the comments!

@ Evil-D, the cockpit glass was super easy! I sprayed the inside with Daler Rowney FW Acrylic Ink using an airbrush. I think the colour was ‘Dark Green’ but it’s quite blue-y. Then around the lower / rear edges I used a dark grey-green paint to make it more opaque. The pilot is just painted black and sprayed White from in front.

I agree that your color scheme suits these particular models to a T. Great group. I don't know Issodon from Adam, but it seems that most versions of him are understated compared to other characters. Interesting.

It’s been a while since I posted but I’ve not been idle – far from it in fact! I’m working on several projects, some of which have required stripping and repainting several times. More on that later, but meantime I’ve been chipping away at Lieutenant Runnik, who was started probably over a year ago and is only now complete…

This is a commission piece for follower of the blog who reached out to me wanting a Raptors Dreadnought to join his all-Dread army. I rarely take commissions but this sounded like a cool project so this Brother will be honoured to join the ranks and represent the Raptors in his force!

I was about to say that he'd make a great addition to your army and was perfectly up to standard with the rest of your work, before reading that it was a commission. There's clearly passion in your stuff and it's admirable to see you perform to the same quality for others as you would for yourself. Awesome work - I'm sure that your client will be chuffed

Now... This is a Space Wolf test model I've been working on for a long time. It has been stripped and re-painted several times, but I finally achieved a tone of blue-grey for the armour that I'm happy with. It was surprisingly difficult.

Please let me know what you think. If folks like it and want to know how it was done, I will produce a guide and do the same for the other loyalist legions.

The Space Wolf looks great, but strange in a way. I have become so used to Space Wolves being layered with stuff, the scheme seems out of place on a model with lines as clean as the Primaris.

I base coat them dark blue (Vallejo Model Air Blue), then airbrush a circle in the centre with Vallejo Model Air Light Sea Blue, and then White.

Yes, I know what you mean! That's partly why I chose Raptors for my own army – the more realistic military scheme seems to suit Primaris more. There is the upgrade sprue though, which might improve things!

And now...

This was a very special project, for a very special girl. Emerson is currently fighting leukemia like a BOSS! Her dad is a good friend of mine and when Emerson took a liking to the Sons of the Phoenix space marine chapter, he asked if I would paint a model for her in that scheme. She chose a Redemptor Dreadnought as the subject and it has been a great honour for me to paint it for a girl who, despite everything she has been through, is never without a smile on her face. A true warrior.

You can read more about Emerson's story here, and even make a donation to help her in her fight: https://www.gofundme.com/help-emerson-fight-leukemia

This marks the culmination of a project 18 months in the making. To paint one marine from each of the First Founding loyalist legions (now chapters), and document the process in a series of PDF painting guides.

Now back to Raptors...

As they are traditionally less ostentatious and more prosaic than other chapters, I felt the Sergeant Jovan model would make a good captain for my 2nd Company. I gave him an older and more austere appearance with a head swap, and made him feel more like a captain with a company banner.

I went a bit more grimdark than normal on the paint job, with some streaking grime and oil paint mapping.
