Hi all,

Thought I would have a go at running a Blog for my slow but determined progress towards building a post apocalyptic town - Junktown. It's loosely based on Fallout and a mix between Junktown and Megaton. The town grew out of an airfield that gradually attracted strays and remnants from across a warn torn post nuclear US. I've posted bits of it in other places so I'll try to mix the new stuff with some 'catching up' on older stuff.

My starting entry is all new. This is the Bot Shop, Junktown's finest purveyor of industrial, combat and domestic robots. The Bot Shop has become No1 by constantly tracking the wasteland for signals of robotic activity, messily achieved by a dangerously wired mass of electronic interceptors.

As time has passed since the war, the pile of discarded bits from salvaged bots has grown, almost burying the shop under its own junk.

As ever, I've had some real fun building this one. Like the Gunshop, it's been lurking the back of my mind and it's good to finally make it real. Been saving some of those bits for years.

So to the WIPs

Long shot - the old workshop, now buried in junk on the left, booth in the middle and parts showroom on the right.

The old workshop, including the store's workhorse M34 Deuce, now sadly as defunct as the robots. A few of the working bots on display at the front.

The Bot Shop owner's den.

The tracking hub, based on an old Russian helicopter, one of the many remnants that headed to the airfield Junktown grew from in the post war years.

The showroom, displaying spare heads, power units and torsos for the keen amateur bot builder.

Some of the working models on display.

A few detail shots - rooms minus the roof.

Piles of Bot Bits

The shelves

The Deuce

Amazing work and great idea, this is a diorama of epic proportions and eye catching qualities.

I love the kiosk which has that sense of personal space to it but still functional, the robot in the background with the wires hanging from its neck is a spot of genius.

I would like to suggest maybe adding some kind of railing between the pile and the parked truck, it just seems a little odd that it doesn't have anything to hold the pile of stock from falling into the truck bay.

Thanks LDD. Actually I meant to go more the other way with the truck. I've given it flat tyres and the idea is that it's become swamped by the mess, but I probably haven't piled enough stuff up against it to make that work yet. Something to work on I think.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
While I wrestle with painting the bot shop, thought I might just upload a previous work, the Junktown Power Company. What better way to power your town than to take a broken down nuclear engine, rip its side out and plumb in a badly assembled transformer.

WIPS

The finished article

And a few detail shots...

That bot shop is just lovely! My hands twitch when I think about trying to paint it but from the way the train turned out I expect it will be fantastic.

Great project!

Many thanks all for the kind comments. Big H, I bought the train from the US on ebay. It's O Scale. Every now and then either a 'dummy car' or a model with a broken engine comes up and you can buy them at quite a reasonable price, even including the postage. I think I paid £30 all up.

Back from holiday now so I should be getting on with the Bot Shop paint job!

Hey LDD, a man after my own heart - it's all about the details.

The big yellow bot is by Titan-forge, from their x-terra range. They are Titans and come in packs of 3. I changed the head and put a Tau Battlesuit head on.
The wheelie bits are from Mantic's Ro-Tek brutes robot team. So is a large amount of the other robot junk. The set is brilliant for bits.
The signs are just prints, with a bit of sponged-on rust added. Away from my hard drive at the moment but I should be able to upload them in a week or so.

Damn that's why I couldn't figure out the yellow bot it's the head that alters the look so much.
Mantics Ro-Tek have to check that out for sure.

I have to say the way you have combined all this is great, the eye for the detail and that sense of realism is spot on.
The kiosk/office is great the carpet and oil can just brings it to life, add to that the scratched surfaces and tarpaulin held down with bricks s epic.

I have to say after seeing your previous work over on PAW, this is just another epic piece and lives up to the high quality I have expected from your work.

I have to say thanks for the info mate and keep this coming

I love your work as it reminds me of being a kid going to the model railway exhibitions with my dad, it was never about the trains it was the scenery and layouts looking for all the little stories playing out in the layout.
Which is why I really enjoy your work as it combines two things of the hobby I love, it's always great looking at your dioramas finding the little real life aspects you sneak in.
For instance the piped in gas canisters that I just loved, the cheap guns tossed in the container and the sun canopy and chairs just brilliant.
I really do wish you would do a list of bits though, I always look and think that I could use that or that would fit nicely for this.

Anyway great work again mate keep it coming and thanks for making entertaining dioramas.

Once again very inventive and can't wait to see this progress, love that you added straps to the gasmasks nice touch.

I have one slight issue with the body armour though, the Cadian armour would look better if you removed the cloth and belt and had just the armour itself.
Not sure if this is just early work and you will be doing it but thought I would mention it, also the arm armour will you be cutting the complete arms into sections ?

Like the racking with the cloth/clothing in the shelving, what did you use to make them as it looks quite neat ?

Thanks LDD, you're right about the body armour - I spotted the cloth after I glued it in place. Will have to cover or paint it in a way that makes it less obvious. As for the arms, they are a mix of full and cut down. I had planned to leave some as complete arms like this:

The clothing is metal foil from here. Heavier and softer than kitchen tin foil, which makes it really nice to work with.

Re reading what I wrote makes it sound like I was questioning the arm armour when in fact I was actually wondering if you was keeping them as one piece or going to cut them up, as for the body armour it just looks a litle odd with the cloth.
The only reason I noticed it was a because it reminded me of a conversion I saw ages ago, it was a IG carrying his armour in his hand. The armour was a Cadian torso hollowed out and left connected by the shoulders pads, it was a great little conversion and looked right.

Anyway back to your work, that foil works a treat I really like how it doesn't crease which gives a more natural feel to it.

What's next then ?

Thanks Grotrebel, the Bot shop took about three weekends, or bits of. I tend to do the build in little bits and then do the paint job in one or two long bursts. Total 25-30 hours I guess.

Next up GENERATORS.

I loved the look of the GW Galvanic Servohaulers set, but not to make the haulers themselves. I wanted the bits! The crane I'll make more or less as intended, but as for the rest...

Damn you done it again, I don't know what I hate you more for the ingenuity or the speed at which you work ...... actually both

No but seriously that is great what really pulls it together is the girders it's resting on, it gives the sense of repurpose.
But no you ain't happy with just that you add the extra details, the fact the engineer (I use the term loosely) has refitted, botched, and crafted to keep the rust bucket running.

I love it a single piece and it has a story, now I hope you are adding a greased stained, dungarees wearing, hands on hips character next it, also oily rag hanging from pocket.

Keep amazing me mate as I really enjoy your updates.

Nice work on the power armour looks kind a cool standing there, just a thought have you considered doing some kind of stand to hold up the power armour on display ?

Also not my idea whoever the guys it was hats off to him

Like the packs hanging from the racking nice job again, also the boots and chest full of odds and ends, you should use that foil and make some basic jackets folded up on display as well.

Hey I was checking out apocalyptic miniatures on Pinterest and guess what your scenery turns up , there was a little filling station with a little broken plane as part of the structure.
Had a small bike leaning up against the pump and a small vehicle parked in it, any chance you can remember where the bike and the ( think) it's called a Cat mobile but could be wrong.

You mean these?

Crap photos sadly - need to retake them.

The bike came with a California Highway Patrol helicopter kit (1/48 scale). The ATV is made by Siku and they aren't very expensive. Just have to search around. Here's one on ebay, but I think you can get them cheaper than this.

Yes that's the one mate and thanks for the info, I actually really love this's as a piece and it actually looks like something I have seen once (where I have no idea).

Any chance of a photo reel of your APOC scenery, don't want to have missed anything.

Just clicked the link and worst thing I actually looked at these before, never would I have considered a repaint to get this, you have a great and imaginative mind sir.

Was looking for inspiration for the clothing store. I didn't want to do just another shack and I also wanted to stick with the aircraft theme of my Junktown. In the back of my mind I had this image of stacked executive jets, relics of the post war exodus of rich folk away from the radioactive clouds to the sanctuary of the airfield that became Junktown. Net result is this...

Loads still to do - walkways, piles of junk etc, but you get the idea.

It's an O scale railway model - Bar Mills I think.

I don’t know how you do it, you just keep nocking these out, already it’s got me engulfed.

The grill is a great find and have to agree o scale has some great usable pieces, you need to find some dead rats and have them hanging along side the grill “Rat Burgers”.

Great work once again, you should do the grill chef wearing a vest and a old pilot cap ha ha ha

Any chance of a how you did it mate as it’s top work.

The experimental generator is epic, where do you get these ideas man.
I think the white picket fence pulls it all together and reinforces the fact it’s a dwelling or make shift home,

Top job and always a pleasure to see your work.

And where do you find everything damn, picket fences, cardboard boxes, suit cases etc

Oooh, so many things to answer. Back to front - I just collect a lot of bits. It's like a hobby all by itself. The suitcases are from a US company called Microform. The fences are Renedra, the cardboard boxes are from an ace company called red zebra models. The are actually 1/35 scale but I don't think it really matters - you can get some very big cardboard boxes.

As for the rust, it's standard salt and hairspray technique. Loads of good demos on youtube - it's an AFV modeller's trick. Once that's done I just add some oil paint rust streaks and then a little weathering power.

Glad you like it!

Post by: Clanmac

Not sure I can go up from a 10/10 (thank you!) but I do know where next. The Main Gate.

My Junktown settlement is based on an old reserve Airforce Base that was too small to attract a missile during the war. Afterwards it gradually attracted stragglers and survivors from a cross the wasteland and as it had a working airfield, many flew in and their aircraft formed the basis of the town. The Main gate is built around the old Airforce Base guardroom and its sentry gun. The building is actually a plasticville radio station but it always reminded me of a military guardroom.

These are early WIP pics to give a feel for the idea. I will inevitably go crazy with the bits box in the days ahead. The lettering in the last pic will actually be attached to the tail of the Hind to make the Junktown sign, once the base camo paint job is on.

To the pics.

It’s great to see you begin a new build and the early placement, I understand your work process better this way.

That junktown signage is hilarious, that tire is perfect for the o nice job again.

Did you manage to scavenge much from the wasteland over the nuclear winter festival ?

Oh man did I find some stuff LDD. I now have a 1/48 scale Hercules which will probably end up making up a bit of a centre piece for Junktown. It's HUGE. And just tons more bits for the bits box - speaking of which, I have now done the first round of 'bits-pimping' on this, focusing on the vehicle emplacement.

Its amazing how quickly you breath life into your pieces, that armoured troop carrier was quite a plain piece but now it’s a diorama on its own.

One thing I notice you favour is the generators to run your machinery, but I am surprised (unless I have missed it which is quite plausible) you haven’t done a solar panel based generator.

Once I again I have to ask where are the sand bags placements, the generator, keyboard panel and ammo cases from please ?

I know I ask a lot but you seem to have a knack at finding some lovely pieces

Don’t worry about asking a lot - sharing finds is one of the best bits of the hobby. The sand bags were from either Microart Studios or Maximini but I don’t think you can get them any more - was looking a few days ago. The generator and computer panel are both TT Combat (Troll Trader). They are lovely pieces although you do have to spend a moment stripping the skulls and eagles off the generator. Easy to un-40k them though.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And you are right about the generators. I just love rusty old chuggers, but I have done one with solar panels, below. I need to do a couple more though. This is No. 6 Junktown - the more upmarket end!

Ha ha can’t get over air conditioning units on the cargo containers, really pullling it all together now with the little touches.

The scratch built observation device is nice, I see the GW binoculars and parts from the tank stubber support looks really cool.

It’s great how many chairs you find of different style, I guess these are all o scale ones ?

Ha are those 1/72 scale bottle crates on the table I see there, I think my old man had these they came in three different colours if I remeber correctly, wasn’t there some crates and sacks as well ?

Old crow went out of business though, shame I wanted to get some of their smaller vehicles

Thanks LDD - I get a lot of the chairs from Chinese O Scale suppliers on Ebay - dead cheap - just search for 1/50 scale furniture and all kinds of interesting stuff comes up.. No idea where the bottles came from - just sitting in the bottom of the bits box for ages.

And as for Old Crow, I bought a load of their stuff before they disappeared from sight so I have a decent reserve of vehicles to work my way through in the years ahead. I think I have about 15+ of their vehicles tucked away plus another 10 or so already painted.

This is unquestionably one of the best terrain threads I've seen on Dakka. It's on par with the threads I followed for years from people I consider masters of their craft. I cannot remember the last time I saw a thread that had this impact on me. Your creativeness is matched by your ability to express a vision in plastic medium. The detail you have achieved on every piece you've built and painted is advanced so far past the average tabletop standard that it doesn't even look like gaming terrain, it's a competition-grade diorama. That you have maintained this level of detail in construction and painting over a vast area of numerous models is inexplicable to me. Your work is art.

Beautifully and accurately said Skalk, I agree entirely. I still can't figure out if this is for a tabletop game like Fallout or This is Not a Test, or if they are being made as beautiful dioramas without plans for use in a game. Was this mentioned earlier and I missed it?

Hey Syro, thanks. Always been a gamer but since I started on Junk Town I've mostly slipped into making it for the fun of modelling. I still intend to game with it and I'm thinking of trying the new Morphidius rules when they come out. It's built so it can be used, I then add a level of detail which is mostly just for the show. I've got thing about 'bits'.

And Skalk - way too kind, thank you, I've learned a lot making Junk Town and my technique has come on in leaps and bounds, so each time I finish a piece and learn something new I want to make another one to push it further. Glad it's providing some entertainment and thanks for the encouragement.

I'm now working on the Guard Force for my Junk Town settlement. I'm about half way through painting some Lead Adventure Post Apoc 'Street Judges' as the core of this force but I wanted some vehicles which reflected the troops - big, heavy, lumbering but very strong. The idea is that these vehicles form the core of a Quick Reaction force which can patrol the Junk Town scrap walls but also quickly deploy to batter, burn and push anything out the way that tries to attack. So I came up with THING 1 and THING 2

They are based on Ramshackle Games Rheboks with the usual additions from the bits box. One has an Old Crow models turret. I want to portray them as converted construction vehicles of some kind. Lots of traction and some additional armour and armament slapped on. The paint job will of course be very burnt, bent and rusty.

Please excuse me while I reset my amazemeter - spring has broken loose once again...

A bit more serious, as You seem to be really profficient at mixing and matching - what is Your preferen scale for sourcing bits? 1:35, 1:48 or 1:72? I understand that this is a very situational question, but having read a lot of discussion on the subject of scale-mongering, but any experience from first hands would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Wirecat, it is indeed situational, but in simple terms, I ignore real scale and just go for whatever looks 'about right'. If something is a little out of scale it is amazing how well other stuff can drag it back in context. So typically I use 1/48-1/56 for vehicles. I'll happily use anything from 1/72 to 1/35 for boxes, crates, canvas and bed rolls because you can have big and small bags and boxes. I tend to avoid any jerrycans other than 1/48 because big ones scream 'wrong' to me. Same for barrels but I do use 1/35 barrels carefully, normally as fuel tanks only. Things like oil cans again can be any scale. GW vehicle models normally come with a load of useful bits so I tend to like them (handles, towing eyes, searchlights etc).

Hope that helps?

Ooh, ooh, I recognize the green vent! It's off the Dust Tactics Allied heavy walker. Working on one of those right now. Those Ramshackle kits look great dolled up with all those random gubbinz. You've got a knack for tying in seemingly disparate stuff into something cohesive. There's even a Lego scuba tank on there. Great stuff.

Missed a couple of updates by the looks of things, population of the main gate and guard house amazing how a few people adds the sense of life.

Now down too thing 1 and 2 bloody heel you did it with them as well, no you couldn’t build out the box you had to go bat shot crazy on them as well ha ha
Your additions really create two very unique vehicles all be it based on the same design, also reflects the nature of the world it’s based in.
The use of what’s readily available adapting and upgrading at the same time, can’t wait to see these painted will you be going uniformed or independent colour schemes ?

Hi LDD. You know me. Can't help fiddling with stuff. I am probably going to go with a similar scheme for each. Industrial equipment colours for the base (yellow and black) but with steel plates and turrets done a different colour to show they are modifications to the original. Just in the process of doing the undercoat and salt and hairspray now.

Also put most of my pics on a Facebook page, including plenty that haven't been posted here. Drop by and have a look. Clanmac's Post Apocalyptia on Facebook

Been a while. Work taking over, but I've have a chance to do the next stage of the rust job on THING 1 & 2. Lots more to do but at least I'm moving again. Decided on the colour scheme in the end and went for industrial but with retrofitted turrets from other vehicles.

Looking good and nice industrial paint contrasting with the military colouring of the turrets, think you could do with some decals you know like mind your step, highly flammable, long vehicle that kind of thing.

Awesome work on the Heavy Mob!

As for Things 1 and 2- I don't believe you actually made and painted them- the yellow, weathering and rust are too good. No, I prefer to believe that you built full scale items, left them in your back garden for seven years and invented a smallifying ray in the meantime and shrunk them down to 28mm.

Really spectacular work- incredibly detailed and realistic!

Well I haven't checked in for a while and you have been busy mate, I think you single handily are building the apocalyptic world.

Your paint work is rather splendid as well, especially loving the check shirt detail subtle and effective.

Now that is some clever work taking that rogue trader bike and somehow giving it a new lick of life, the load out really gives it a more up to date look and fits so well into the Apoc universe.

Rules. Had a similar experience so waiting for the new Modiphius fallout rules to see what they are like. Also toying with whether to try and modify Spectre Operations. Adding wasteland extras is the easy bit.

Threat gratefully received!

The buggies are from lots of places. Puppetswar buggy with Old Crow wheels (the one that looks a little like a VW beetle)

https://puppetswar.eu/product.php?id_product=60

2 x VOID Junkers Buggies

http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2938
http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=217_218_59_64&products_id=2943

Old Grenadier street gang car with GW wheels added.

http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2743

And now to remedy my very long absence, my latest bit of Junktown Madness, the Butcher Shop. Everyone needs meat, right...

Help yourself to Land-shark, tunnel squid, Sting-tailed rad-runners, carniverous slugs, or for the fussy eater, beef, pork and goat (no accounting for tastes).

All very excellent!

Several years ago, I was part of a security detail for a UN project that tried to incentivize Wealthier nations to make homes and businesses out of shipping containers and sponsor small businesses and families in poorer nations- particularly Africa- to use them. Your models are exactly how they ended up- except Junktown is better kept. Part of the problem is no one thought how hot steel containers get, with no reliable electricity and/or air conditioning. (Sigh) The powers that be meant well, I guess.

Haven’t been around lately and to be honest thought you would get sick of me keep saying great model ha ha

You should get paid by companies for using their stuff as every time you do something I want to buy it, perfect example the junkers void vehicle hated the look of that model but now I am like I could do with one of them ...... damn you

Also love the raging hero conversion for the rider works so well, looks quite a casual pose as if she is about to raise up a bit to look through the binoculars.

Have you used old crow wheels on the puppetswar truck by chance, hey I got a couple of those Gecko models in the end as well so that’s your fault ha ha ha

Keep up the amazing work buddy

Thanks LDD, good spot on the Old Crow wheels. Yes, they are from a Gecko!

I always thought the junkers vehicles had some potential - I've got about five of them so I need to make them work. A few pics of my abandoned satellite array, using a comms dish made by Uncertain Scenery on a tower scratch built using bits from TTCombat's Necromunda range. Lots more pics on the FB page.

Great scenery, although same base color adds here to the MDF problem of "everything has the same thickness". But that's just my envy speaking.

Thanks for the kind comments all.

Second radar, also from Uncertain Scenery (the tower was made by someone else but I can't remember who). Again MDF, tethered using salt and hairspray plus oils and powders.

Been a long time since I last posted. I've been working on a large aircraft hangar for my Junktown settlement. The hangar has been converted for use as a vehicle repair shop. I'm still working my way through it and it's not completely finished, but I've done enough to show some pics here. Most of the pics are taken with the roof off, but I've taken a few 'atmosphere' shot with the roof on.

See what you think.

This is high artisttry, but how could you DO such a thing to the SHADOmobile? CRUELTY!

Sadly not. Sacrificed content for style.

Well you've certainly done them justice in their new roles. The whole junktown setup is totally amazing. And rusty. But mostly amazing. Which is amazing in itself given the sheer amount of rust

Wow, that's twice now that I think you're starting your post with a photo of a real life thing you used as inspiration. Beautiful continuing work on Junk Town. Any group shots of a majority of Junk Town set up on the horizon?

Just starting to think about how to incorporate the hangar into a larger board, so I hope so, but it's quite a big undertaking.

Amazing work. Thought the hanger was a photo for inspiration at first . Love all the bits from different manufacturers in the shelves.

Has a very District 9 feel to me.

This blog is utterly amazing. I just read every post start to finish and I’m blown away. My jaw is still hanging open. There were several times that I thought you were posting a photograph of a real world object to use as inspiration only to realize it is your model! I can’t compliment you enough. This is some of the best stuff I have ever seen on dakka.

I hope someday you will show us photos of the fully completed Junktown all together.

Don't let flattery get You on that hangar, Clanmac! It is good, sure - but there is no way the floor can be that pristine! This is what gives out the toy-not-real - absence of multi-colored pools and streaks all across the floor, especially under the broken roof and by the door. Otherwise, as I've said earlier - You have a great eye and taste for dirt and chipping (and rust) - just enough to make it believable while still keeping the whole thing mad and everboardly MAD-maxy. Thank You!

Switched fire to the waiting room for the Hangar. A little place to have a coffee while waiting for your wasteland wanderer to be patched back together...

Weird... our city recently has gotten quite a lot of graffiti in least accessible spaces, like along the roofs, on balconies and such. Usually they are at about eye or shoulder height of the average person with below average intelligence... But the waiting room is great, such lively and lovely clutter! Thanks for inspiration (and a chuckle)!

A few update pics. My Junktown hangar is now complete. And for Wirecat the floor is now properly dirty! The interior is quite configurable so I have set it up first for my fleet of Ramshackle Rheboks and second as an indoor settlement.

As ever, lots more pics on the Facebook page.

Wow, that is super impressive. I hope I can one day make a scene like that, with the weathering, and the realism and the grittiness.

Unbelievable amounts of realistic detail- this Junktown you have going on almost has more reality than many actual places I've been- a reason for everything going on, nothing just 'tossed in' to look cluttered. I had to laugh seeing all the boxes, tarps, parts, etc on top of the shipping containers and other 'buildings': for big inspections of our motor pool in the Army, we always got drafted to help the mechanics hide things in high, out of the way places; no good motor sergeant _ever_ had strictly what was on the TO&E and stockage lists. Well done!

Long time no post (again).

Been doing a bit more of my Junktown Hangar board and created a rusty corner where vehicles and spares go to die. Feed your rust hunger.

Thanks King Thor - it's actually my back garden. Seems to make for a great post apocalyptic backdrop. I think that's a good thing?

Cheers Monkey Troll. That one is actually a Matchbox Battle Kings Rocket Launcher, although they do look similar. Just love using die-casts for this kind of stuff.

Frankly, it is big, it is clever and I'm glad you've done it. This piece is so crammed full of details that- whilst each one individually may be of little comment beyond the high technical skill of execution- cumulatively it is impossible for the eye to take it all in. Every time I look there is something new I hadn't singled out to make note of.

Extremely well done.
