What fictional universe is begging for a miniature game? @ 2017/08/09 19:42:15

Not sure if this is the right forum, but it seemed like a good place to start. Feel free to move it if there's a better place. So there are so many well-designed and rich universes out there, and only a few have war games to help us explore them. Star Wars, 40k, Runebound, Warmachine, Lord of the Rings, etc. If you could create a miniature game set in any fictional universe, what would it be? My pick? Thedas. Say what you want about Bioware's more recent games, but the world of Dragon Age is vast and incredibly well-written. It would fit perfectly into a wargame, too! Here are just a few ideas for armies:

Ferelden - Ferelden is known for strong, independent vassals who "elect" their lords. The people of Ferelden choose which lord they serve, so I could see them having an infantry and hero focus. Would likely have the best "troops" in the game with high morale.

Orlais - The Orlesian Chevaliers are world-renowned. This army would basically play like Bretonnia in WHFB. Lots of Cavalry supported by serf infantry.

Tevinter - Mages, mages, and more mages. The Tevinter Imperium would have the widest access to magic, and their mages would be more powerful than any others with a higher chance for mishaps due to a lack of Circle upbringing.

Dalish Elves - Archery and Halla cavalry. Lots of hit-and-run tactics for their infantry.

Qunari - Elite army of stoic warriors and Sarebaas immune to morale. The ox men will gladly die to fulfill their role in the Qun.

Darkspawn - the true Horde army of the game. Hurlock infantry, Genlock shock troops, Ogre monstrous infantry, and Shriek scouts.

I'm not sure if you would want to include full armies for the following, or use them as "hero" units for the above:

Templar - magic-resistant, heavily armored shock troops

Grey Wardens - elite infantry, mages, and archers specialized in fighting Darkspawn

Mages - just what it says on the tin.

While Warlord makes some decent Samurai figures and there a lot of rulesets like Song of Blades and Heroes, etc would work just fine, a dedicated war/skirmish game set in Legend of the Five Rings would be really cool.

FFG did manage to nail Dooms gameplay as a boardgame with the 2016 remake. The mechanics are top notch, really capture the fast pace, always moving, always shooting nature of the game. The miniatures are also really good for PVC pieces.

Personally I could really go for a Homeworld space game, like Dropfleet Commander. As a huge Dragon Age fan, I could also really go for a Dragon Age skirmish game. Not sure it would work too well as a mass battle game, but it would shine as a more detailed skirmish game.

A Serenity skirmish game in the vein of Rogue Stars, Necromunda, etc. would be pretty sweet. Rival ship crews doing missions to "Keep on Flying". Why is this not a thing?

The Matrix could be an interesting skirmish game as well, but it feels more player vs. GM or more RPG. Plus, there are not enough factions. However, that doesn't mean it couldn't work.

Most Universes do not have enough factions. However, not having DUNE is absolutlely criminal.

The problem is the cost of the merchandising rights. That has killed many a game.

I've heard of it, but I've barely seen any of the metal models, so I'm not sure how it fared. I have always wanted an easily accessible Samurai game as it'd be a easy sell to a buddy of mine.

At first I thought Test of Honour by Warlord games might work, but there's no supernatural or magic component, which is huge in L5R. I think I may end up just using Skaven as some really nice Nezumi (Ratmen), and Warlord plastics/metals for humans, with some metals for character. Probably Song of Blades and Heroes for rules.

I would really like an Iron Grip universe miniature wargame.

The Iron Grip computer games took place in a dieselpunk setting on another planet. There are large empires fighting it out, but also lots of small warbands which would probably be more fun.

Iron Grip: Marauders was a turned based strategy game, so it had a lot of similarities to miniature wargames already.

I contacted the guy who created the core of the IP for ISOTX to see if they had ever thought about doing a miniatures game, but I never heard back. Unfortunately the company has moved on to doing WWII games and the Iron Grip games and websites are mostly either purposefully shut down or no longer functioning due to neglect.

Mass Effect for sure. You could do so much with it. You could make a skirmish scale wargame, you could make an RPG, you could make a warband style game and you can even do a platoon-company level game.

World of Warcraft would make for an awesome warband level game like Mordheim. You could even do a co-op boardgame with AI enemies.

Shadowrun is perfect for a skirmish game . But balancing the infinite variety of Skills , wepons , equipments , magic and bionics will be a nightmare.

The Vision of Escaflowne- Fantasy mecha are cool.

C&C Tiberian saga - a hybrid between dropzone commander and flame of war will be perfect.Peace through power.

I play Elder Scrolls Online damn-near religiously, and I think the PVP is awesome, and the armies of the Alliances would easily and interestingly fit into a tabletop wargame.

Anyone want to do it with me? We could have a side-project and just homebrew a wargame.

The final edition of Clan Wars was called the Daimyo edition and it was a mess.

The basic rules are fine, but too much was added on, the flying rules and the skirmish rules are just too complex. The card system is pure bloat.

The fluff is the best I have ever read for a wargame, and I have read the fluff parts of the rules several times.

Fantasy Flight have recently (last year I think) bought the rights for Five Rings, so all the fluff is in the air at the moment.

I saw a few people asking for Serenity / Firefly early in the thread.

There is actually a miniatures board game on the way but not sure how good it will be. It's from Gale Force 9 and the first box (Brigands & Browncoats ) comes with 10 crew members (2 versions of the 5 main crew, passengers coming in expansions), 5 thugs, 5 cowboy looking guys, 6 tiles and 10 cardstock buildings (the inside of the box apparently also serves as the inside of one location).

More photos of the models here -

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2017/08/gencon-50-ffg-modiphius-gf9-more.html

For some reason they also appeared to have a resin naked Mal sitting on a rock at Gencon. Presumably they will be offering him as a promo at some point, perhaps in a Saffron themed expansion. Unfortunately I cant find the page now with the model.

As mentioned by others UFO:Enemy Unknown, and Borderlands.

That hasn't been mentioned.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. Brightly coloured units, FIBUA, property damage and a wide variety of capabilities and more types of stuff than Symphogear or VividRed.

Ok Sister Chantes might need 19 figures and Teana duplicates of her team for their illusion/clone magics but otherwise unless it's the Mariage or Gadget Drones or the like it should be suitable for the usual skirmish sizes.

I can think of a few universes that could use a miniatures game:
Metal Gear Solid
Dune
Star Trek ground combat (like what is seen in later DS9 episodes with the Federation fighting the Jem'hadar)
Starcraft
Stargate SG-1
WarCraft/WoW
Wing Commander

I also wonder why there isn't a game that's basically a tabletop miniatures version of SMITE, with teams of various ancient gods facing off in battle against one another. I think that could make an entertaining little skirmish game. Of course maybe such a game already exists and I somehow don't know about it.

Would definitely love to see Starcraft!
I know Prodos showed some small scale Zerg a while ago (think was it demonstrating their manufacturing processes?) but unfortunately I don't think anything had appeared since.

Dune would be amazing, although you would need one hell of a design team to capture the essence of those books. And what kind of format would you go for?
Although arguably you already had that game with early edition 40k

Yep, EA excels at wasting the potential of its IPs with ridiculous company-wide mandates.

That said, there's probably a market for a "Crazy Modern War" or "Crazy near future scifi war" game. They key is good miniatures.

I've considered a SMITE-like game, not so much a MOBA-like, but just players and heroes. Again, amazing miniatures is key.

Gah! Don't remind me!

Clan War was a mass battle game similar to the old Warhammer Fantasy. Figures moved in rank and file formations. I loved the samurai/oriental theme of the game and bought multiple armies. Then one day the manufacture just dropped it with no warning and suddenly no one in my FLGS was interested in playing anymore. I held on for a couple years trying to generate interest locally before finally giving up selling off my collection.

Yeah, very good little gem, loved the rules for the general's HQ and how characters interacted with units.

These days L5R is owned by FFG, so if the LCG, boardgame and RPG do well, I would not rule out the possibility of a Runebound-like Clan War game.

- HALO - if there is one it must be crap cuz I've not heard of any. Surprised GW never pursued it as it seems an IP right in their wheelhouse.

- EXTRAORDINARY LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN - Good luck dealing with Alan Moore but there is a goldmine here.

- RICK & MORTY - it's only been 3 seasons but R&M have made a TON of enemies.

- PLANET OF THE APES - Lots of potential here. Apes/humans/mutants- time travel/area control. Flip the boards to the Forbidden Zone/Jungle/ruined NYC

- SAMURAI JACK - this could be really crazy. The future/ the past with a metric tons of armies from yetis/highlander girls/Robot bounty hunters/tiger assassins/giant monsters.

- THE THING - Who is human & who's a thing? Yeah it's Ultimate Werewolf with minis but you start out on one side with your fellow humans but then your paranoia goes through the roof as you fight for survival or you blow up the base to save humanity.

Yeah it seems like a no brainer ... but when you think a little bit more about it, it seems like a lot of the factions might feel a little samey to the non-initiated. If you're not a L5R fan, one army of samurai is much the same as another. maybe a Shadowlands versus Rogukan game? But there again, not enough factions.

Well, that's part of why they're color-coded for your convenience, you know

As to them feeling a little samey... er, well, if you limit yourself to unaligned units, sure, otherwise each clan would play very differently (for example, you could probably link Crab gameplay with dwarves and Crane with High Elves, thematically). And then there's the naga, nezumi, tengu and assorted supernatural stuff that you coul add even before of touching the Shadowlands at all.

Most of the ideas I could come up with were already hammered out by others, so I will go with something that will probably be rather unpopular:

I'd like some established games to delve into deeper parts of their licenses. For instance, unless I'm wrong, there are no Milestone minis for DC's Heroclix, and certainly no New Universe or Ultraverse stuff for Marvel's Heroclix. THAT is a travesty to me.

I guess I'd love it if someone came up with mods for existing games. X-Wing mod to accommodate some new ships for an Enemy Mine expansion. That'd be saucy. Or pretty much ANY sci fi ship battle game to take on add on rules for other properties. Battlestar Galactica, Wing Commander, there are tons...

Gundam. The more I think about it, the more amazed I am it hasn't happened (Gundam Vs is the same idea as a viedo game). The universe is such a perfect fit for small-scale skirmishes with heroes and grunts from different factions going head-to-head.

Feng Shui: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/FengShui

It's an action-movie RPG where there are sorcerers, cyborg apes, fascist oppressors, martial artists and gunslinging assassins seeking redemption, who are travelling through time and battling at critical site to control the future. The pre-existing factions and countless ideas for action heroes across time would make this perfect.

A Mass Effect wargame would be great, but what I'd really like to see is an RPG more than anything, and to be honest I'm amazed there isn't one. Green Ronin published a Dragon Age RPG a few years ago and it's a bloody good system (I'm running a DA campaign at the moment), so I'd totally trust them with ME should Bioware/EA let them have a crack at it. I say RPG before wargame just as there's a ton of stuff in ME that would be hard/pointless to represent on the tabletop in a purely combat game. For example, you're not going to see a Hanar in battle... unless it's Blasto!

Actually, forget everything I just said and get me a Blasto mini, stat!

Mekton would cover that perfectly. If the Kickstarter wasn't several years late with no appreciable progress. :( I've got a box of 1:144 kits awaiting delivery of the rules (Gundam Wing, sadly, but at least the mecha designs in that series were good).

My response was Armored Core for largely the same reason. I'm shocked there isn't a popular anime style mecha game out there. Then again, there seems to be less overlap in anime and wargame fans than I'd assume. In any case, I want some shoulder cannons and beam sabers, please.

Seconded on Dragon Age: Origins, Orzammer is one of my favourite locations ever crafted in computer games! It is such a shame that the writer who created it was hounded out of Bioware by internet trolls :-(

A universe which engaged me in my youth was Nosgoth, the settling of the Soul Reaver/ Legacy of Kain series so I would enjoy painting up a little Vorador or Raziel.

Also I love the setting of Summoner 2 and the art style used to create the characters is really cool. I would love a set of Galdyrian Swordsmen or Tempest Beasts!

I'm feeling oldschool and missing WHFB, but I am imagining the potential of an Ogre Battle tabletop game. It's an ancient franchise, the last entry in the series was 16 years ago, and it has a good mix of monsters, races, and it has demons and Chaos Gates.

I would not mind a tabletop version of command and conquer in say 10 or 15mm.

Both players deploys a base that consists of the main building and a few logistic buildings and some defence.
Then you have a set amount of turns, say 15-20 in order(combat must be very simple and very fast) to kill the enemy base. Units are on a infinite resupply as long as you controll 1 spesific base building(not the command senter) but you cannot bring in units that is not part of your "inventory list"

Super Smash Bros. - all of Nintendo's universes and some guest IP all combined together. You could have Bowser and his koopas, Princess Peach with the Mario brothers, Yoshi cavalry, and whatever the Mushroom Kingdom has, Captain Falcon and his friends riding around in skimmers, Ganondorf with all the familiar Zelda foes, Giygas with starmen and hypnotized stray dogs and street thugs, and so forth. You'd also have Fire Emblem for the boring standard fantasy army to ground the whole thing, and Pokemon to bring in the kids.

There WAS a shadowrun based skirmish game many years ago called DMZ. Came with mats (poster sized) point to point movement and covered models on foot or motorcycles (go-gangers). FASA even had a City-fighting sprawl table with lit-up 3d terrain AND a working monorail at a Gencon back when it was released (which means they got around the hex-map movement issue). You used the minis available from Ral Partha for it.

There was movement, combat (weapons) as well as magical combat and it may well have had a mechanic for decking certain aspects, too but it's probably 25 years or more ago and I've forgotten. I ended up using the mapsheets for mapping out my cyberpunk2020 game combat sequences.

Something that I always wondered why they didn't do is ..

GIJoe and Masters of the Universe.. Hasbro owns WotC but they don't do anything with it.

They could do a miniature game that is D&D scale so it is cross compatible;
Run the line for 18 months and cover RPG books like Green Ronin did for DC Heroes;
Plus Masters of the universe is Gamma World when you think about it.

Since WotC is usually tied with Wiz Kids, I would rather them do something else
with their miniatures. I hate blind pull and the quality they currently produce has really
went down hill.

But hasbo has all kinds of action figure suppliers and can't do their own small scale figures.
Follow the same ideas for releases as their collector models; Maybe even small tanks
and vehicles of scale for the line..

For example, you're not going to see a Hanar in battle... unless it's Blasto!...

I started building one based on Spycraft/Stargate (the only d20-system game that does guns well, in my opinion) for fun a couple of years ago, and got kind of bogged down trying to find a sensible way to reconcile what is 'equipment' rather than a 'power'.

There's also a huge amount of trouble built into biotics; the crowd-control effects are only usable by Shepard/Ryder&co because they'd be incredibly annoying to get hit with in an action game whereas in a tabletop game you can't always designate someone the "player" with access to those sorts of powers, and the physics aspect (can I throw that guy at an angle that'll toss him off that thing?) is irritating to write in such a way that it wouldn't be irritating to play.

So you could do it, but the lore is so vague about why a lot of the game mechanics work that in translating a real-time action game into a turn-based tabletop game it'd be quite easy to go far off-mission and end up with something that didn't play right, feel like Mass Effect, or work.

Dragon Age is a lot easier because it's basically turn-based already.

Kind of against the spirit of the thread, but I do think in general miniature games work better as their own property and not something licensed. The development time on miniatures is just so long that from concept to a finished model being played on the table makes it hard to cash in on a popular trend and licensing fees make an already tough business hard to sustain and always under the threat of losing access to the IP.

It's not impossible, but I'd find it pretty hard to do outside of a couple evergreen brands like Star Wars. Mass Effect really nudged my brain in that direction, for as much as I love that IP, I'd be just as happy with another universe with similar levels of care put into it that was in the hands of the game designers... and not EA....

Even my own desire for an Armored Core game is less an official want for a Raven's Nest and more wishing to see an anime inspired mech game with a robust, parts based model building system.

I generally agree that the threat of losing the IP makes me cautious about IPs like Star Wars. Sure, FFG has had X-Wing for awhile now, but how long will it last? Miniature games can take a long time for some people to get into. X-Wing doesn't require any hobby effort, but now they'll have Legion.

Maybe the best IPs for this thought exercise, if we want someone to go through with it, are IPs owned by toy companies that would make the models themselves.

So, the answer is Zoids. Zoids are begging for a miniature game.

The MCU has some factions that could be flushed out into armies for a wargame. Unfortunately there's already HeroClix and the like, and something like a Superhero based wargame would work more akin to Warmachine or a tabletop version of a MOBA like League of Legends.

I would also love to see a Gundam themed wargame as well.

After playing Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, what I really want is a wargame for that franchise. I know there's the Board Game, and it's good, but it's not the same as a tabletop wargame with Battlestars duking it out against Basestars

One of my favorite childhood games: Lords of Magic
Armies:
Order - Bring back Bretonnia! basically knights and stuff, special units are spectral knights and Sir Lancelot
Chaos - Barbarians, special unit is a hydra
Light - Good elves riding raptors with long staffs, special units are pegasus riders and a phoenix
Death - Dark elves with necromancy, vampires, and lich. Also the main leader rides a bat
Earth - dwarves, hobbits, shambling constructs, special unit is a giant worm thing
Air - storm giants, fairies, dragons, wizards, special unit is an ice dragon
Water - amazons, lizard men, spiders, water knights, special unit is a giant octopus?
Fire - giants, dwarves, special unit is a fire dragon

All of the races have generals, wizards, archers, infantry, cavalry, special creatures. They balanced armies by making some factions better at specific roles.

I would like to see game based on Jakub Ròżalski paintings (there is already board game called "scythe"). This could be a hit. Of course we have something similar (dust tactics) but it's based on IIww, scythe is more like Iww and it's a lot different theme.
Or there is Andrzej Ziemiański saga called "monument to the empress Ahai" (I think it's only in polish for now, but I've translated the title), that's also a very interesting world.
Also mentioned before shadowrun would be really nice.
The last one is world of darkness, but it could be very hard to catch in rules I think.
I feel also lack of Lovecraftian world, there is achtung Cthulhu, there are some nice board games also, but still it's not enough for me.
