Welcome all to the 31st round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka. For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
- Armour Up: The best defence is a large amount of metal between you and the thing that wants to kill you. Whether that's a plate armour on a knight or armour plating on battle tank, if it can take a hit or three then it's perfect for this theme.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of September and will end at midnight BST on the 30th of September. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Going to use this as motivation to get my Land Raider painted.
Will edit in a proof pic when I'm not posting from my phone.
Build pic, it was primed a bit ago, but has been sitting in the pile. I have 3 sets of sponsons built for it, doubt I’ll get them all done, but the primary build will be a LRR or LRC; haven’t decided yet.
righto...this theme feels like a good excuse to finally get another one of my battlewagons done!
I'd gradually bought 5 of the sodding things second hand, a good year or so ago, so I could run the 5-battlewagon formation in 7th ed....and until now, I have only got one painted, so yeah, I never got to run that formation...and erm...now I just have 5 battlewagons...oh well - good thing I love battlewagons!
...the one I've already painted was full-on badmoonz colour scheme, and seeing as I'm doing my ork army as just a huge fluffy collection, a proppa Waaagh! - not just an army list build or something, I'm including a bunch of stuff from all the clans in there...so I figured I'd do each of my battlewagons in a different clan scheme (aside from snakebites - they get a squiggoth )...anyway, I think I'll be doing this one Evil Sunz style
I started working on this a few days ago. Is it still ok for me to enter the competition?
In any case here is a picture of it in the state it was when I started working on it and a picture of it now. Hopefuly I will be able to cover it in medieval art by the end of the month.
Okay, I'm in with this Razorback for my Dark Angels:
It's primed in Caliban Green; hope that's okay as far as the challenge goes. It should be a nice easy vehicle to paint (knock on wood...).

Good choice, and yes, they're easy to get through - these four only took about twelve hours total.
While I've got the time I'm going to push myself this month.
Here are my proof pictures of a Redemptor Dreadnought, 3 other Death Company Dreadnoughts (assuming box lets me build 3 death company ones), and a Baal Predator:
Well, Genesaika, I hope a DE Raider counts, because that and an Eldar Falcon are my entry for this month.
They are part of an Ulthwe themed Aeldari army that I am starting, so I hope that the stiff cardboard that they build Raiders out of counts as 'Armour'!
Good luck, all!
Ohh man, people took armour up very seriously. Everybody is gearing up with their best armor. What's that enormous warbeast...looks like
it's covering half a table?!?
Too bad my september is going to be very busy at work.... so my time will be very limited. I'm gonna paint something smaller, way smaller
than everybody else.

Ayup I hear that, I only have 12 days at home so had to pick something small as well - although they're big for their size!
And that enormous warbeast is the FW Gargantun Squiggoth <3 <3 <3
Vejut wrote:I dunno Modock, those battletech models are pretty tiny--then again, I'd love to see some micro armor done up to your usual quality...
Yea, those little mechs are quite cute.

Gargantun Squiggoth is huge good luck to Doktor_g finish it in one month.
Those Kromlech juggernauts are really great models, perfect for the theme. Two armor plates are better than one
mentality.
I read only good things about Kromlech products.
This is tempting me to make my kitbash super-heavy tank for my Chaos Space Marines...but I don't know if I can dump the money need for it. If I find the money I may enter this month.
wow this is shaping up to be a hell of a month already. Hope you guys make good progress on your beasts and tanks.
Like Modock I know my September is going to be very busy at work and doing DIY on the house so time will be very limited. I'd love to join in with a cool orky conversion but sadly think I will have to go for probably a single small figure, just got to work out which 1 now.
Ok then, here is my proof pic. I have a bit of work ahead of me because I still haven't decided on a symbol for my kabal yet. No time like the present to enter a contest and force me to get creative haha! I'm also waiting on some bits to spice it up a bit more, as if dark eldar needed it.
Forge world (or someone with a LOT of FW stuff) was at Gencon so I bought a QUESTORIS KNIGHT MAGAERA because I thought it looked cool, and I have converted it to be a just cool looking normal knight with all the options save the AA gun. I plan to paint it up to go with my Admech Army.
Looks like everyone is going with Tanks this month. Well I don't know how i can compare with them but my miniature is this guy. I was gonna paint him now anyway since my paints arrived, so i figured why not enter the challenge.
WIP pic. Medieval dance of death freehands are done on this side. Also I want to thank Paradigm for letting me participate even though I was a bit further into the work than allowed, thankfuly he let it slide on the basis that the model is huge and I have a lot of work in front of me.
This is shaping up to be an exciting month with all these tanks getting painted!
I don't really have any tanks to paint, but would a squad of Dark Eldar Incubi fit the bill? They're dressed from head to toe in armour. I need to paint Dark Eldar for my behind-schedule Armies on Parade board!
Am I able to enter? I'm almost finished assembling my Stormlord and was going to be doing it this month anyway. This would be a good motivator to ensure I do get it done...
Oh - and that mess in the middle gap was from when I followed GW's instructions too rigidly and forgot which variant I was building... glued the panels in the wrong gap. Thankfully the sponsons cover it when assembled!
Been avoiding doing GW stuff for these, but eh, this guy's been calling to me for paint for three years now--hope I get time and don't burn out on it. Actual kit bash/conversion this time.
A Hungarian 44M TAS, aka something that was never produced (the prototype was destroyed) but was kinda like the Panther but also sort of like the Tiger but Hungarian. Weird, the kit is probably not historically accurate and I slapped some Jagdtiger side skirts on it because those were the only ones at the shop that fit lenght-wise, so it is complete fiction. Blame Wyrmalla's Thaw of '46 plog for reminding me this was somewhere on the back of my closet shaming me.

As cool as that sounds aldo the image isn't loading, at least not for me, and since it sounds so cool I really want to see it.
Anyway I don't think I'll have much time this month so going for a single figure. Was racking my brain and looked through a list of all the models I have then this one jumped out and me and I thought why not.
Arkady Model from Kabuki - I've been creating my own little Blood angels successor chapter in my head during long drives for work so he will be in a similar colour scheme to them.

Your place sounds perfect Zobo, where do I sign up? I have similar issues with my own stuff. I thought Deffkopters where brilliant as a base for vehicle conversions (which they are) so somehow I now own 36, I don't even remember buying that many.....
What's the rule on bases? Can they have been done ahead of time? I have been working on the base for my Knight as I built and magnetized it. The base is almost done but the Knight itself just got completed and primed last night.

ah deffkoptas, there's another thing that I loved, and acquired quite a few of - only about 20 though, kinda jealous of your 36! ...like with the battlewagons, I wanted to run 3 squads of 5 of them in games back in 7th, because that was 15 fast, tough, twin-linked rokkits, and only cost 450 points all-up...and again, like the battlewagons, I never got those painted and used them like that in a game either ...and now in 8th, they've obviously recognised that they're good, so now instead of 450 points for 15, it's now 1245 points ...still, silver lining, now that I can't realistically field that many, means I can use more of them in conversions

Well, with everyone else breaking out the super heavies, I had to do something to up the ante! That's how this works, right?

That's what I get for trying to use blasphemous Google Photos.
I uploaded it to Dakka, now it should show.
It's this thing
Spoiler:
Basically a Panther tank but a bit different. I couldn't know because I've never cared much for Germany's tanks
Thought about not entering this month as got so much on but here i am. Its only going to be a single figure as theres so much hobby to do with armies on parade and a tale of warlords for AOS at my local GW. So here he is
This guys is an aspirant Knight questor for my AOS skirmish warband. The idea is that all the knight and lord wannabes for my stormcast eternals armys have to undertake a quest of such to prove thier martial prowess before the earn their armour. So in some form they are actually trying to armour up.
Hope this is ok as been sitting on it for a while and am finally getting some paint going. Plus i didnt want to do another tank.
Basically a Panther tank but a bit different. I couldn't know because I've never cared much for Germany's tanks
Cool, but also no! How could you? Don't you feel an involuntary twitch in your nether regions whenever you see a Panzerkampfwagen IV G? No? Is that just me?
I don't even know what it does yet but I'm going to convert up one of the new Nurgle tanks that'll be released soon.
I figured I have enough bits/green stuff to make my own variant!
It is done. The Fluff for this model is that it is a knight of unknown age that has been operating autonomously for 100 years and no techpriest has been able to get near it until the young techpriestess on top of it managed to. She can direct it and has been working to gain it's trust so they can begin to maintain it. (My Admech army are heretics, for their write up check out this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yzldA_Wd4HDkteVG9wb_xCuo8eSL_1a-VnJwpi6oRlw/edit?usp=sharing )
I'm in! I will compete with a Vulturax Stratos-Automata. Technically a flying monstrous creature according to the rules, but it's a robot, it has armour!

Yes, yes and yes! First:
I'm slightly annoyed at the cost of deffkoptas etc :( I don't have 20 or 36... but I do have a good number of them and wowwee I only got to really use them twice sadness
Also, battlewagons cry :( but at least they're survivable right?! right?! I still just have my kitbashed one, but I was really looking forward to getting the official kit and building it too :(
And still hoping we'll get the new looted wagon rules soon <crosses fingers> Cuz I have several, although I suppose I can just run them as trukks too
Anyway
/salt
Back to our regularly scheduled TANKS!!
and big machines <3 <3 <3
Really loving all these! @SQRT(-2) - that's awesome, really like all the cables.

what's the problem with battlewagons? ...run one bare-basic, with a deffrolla, and for 180 points, there's 6 S8 AP-2 melee attacks that hit on 2+ - stuff 20 boyz in it for even more fun! - shootas to pump out 40 shots a turn ...or sluggaz to deliver a 60 melee attack blob to the front line while the deffrolla minces things!
...as for looted wagons, yeah, it would be nice to see some official rules for them...but, I strongly doubt it'll happen - unless they start selling some kind of "wagon-lootin' kit" or something, an orky upgrade sprue...which...could actually be generally bloody awesome now I think about it! ...anyway, I've got 3 looted rhinos that I just use as trukks, that works just fine...or if you make a big enough looted wagon, it could work for a battlewagon instead...another rules-option, is to use 'em as "bigg trakks" from the forgeworld book...that's what I use for my goff rokkerz stage/wagon thing I made a while back
I'm going to paint my Incubi. They're covered in armour. It may be fancy Dark Eldar armour with spikes and flourishes, but it's still armour. I'll try to paint the whole squad, but we'll see.

Ah, don't think about it that way: Think of this as an extra motivator to get some paint on your models, and a chance to improve and look at other pretty models. Sure, it sucks if you finish and don't get a single vote, but hey, you got yourself a painted miniature! And that's the important thing, you got rid of another bad case of plastic grey
For myself, it has been a long time since I was able to participate, but here's my entry, mah pretty girl, Neave Blacktalon:
Spoiler:
It's gonna feel good to paint the very first female stormcast
I'm getting antsy here... I keep looking at my raider wanting to do something to it, but I need to wait for some bits to come in tomorrow or Saturday.... It's agonizing haha
Had to post some WIP pics cause it's shaping up nicely! First batch of greenstuff and chaos-y bits added. Now on to more greenstuff and more skulls and then time to start painting this beast. Still haven't got the vaguest clue about what these will do, but I'm making one nonetheless.

Spoiler:
I'd add some more greenstuff around the base of the cannon, because right now it looks like it's quite separate and not properly attached. That's just my take at least.
Which reminds me I should probably build my LSS.
After failing to finish last month ( ) I'm going to drop back in for this one! I'll be painting up a Stormcast Lord Castellant - he certainly seems to be Armoured up!
Spoiler:
Not entirely sure where his bird-dog has gotten to, but if I find it, I'll paint that up too! See you all on the other side

Oh I most definitely will be, that was just the first "layer" of greenstuff. There will be plenty more to come. This is not its final form!
I'm gonna go with a smaller entry compared to other knights, super heavies and tanks. I will probably do just one battlesuit but I hope for more.
I'm starting a new Tau army the problem is I still don't know what color scheme to use. Well this will be a nice opportunity to test a scheme.

Join us Modock! N'dras is cool colour wise, and pretty edgy if you're into that. They do lots of covert stuff so the stealth suits will fit in.

Checking as we speak the N'dras color scheme...
Believe it or not I was just admiring that army not long ago and I really like it. Was already thinking painting them in some green tone.
I just need to settle which tone to go for. Usually I have trouble deciding what color to use. I spent quite some time before I chose
the skintone for the slaughterpriest.
@ Whitelsey and Zobo, I'd love to see looted wagons in the codex as well, but will only believe it when I see it. I'd love to do a battle wagon conversion when I have the time.
Since everyone else is doing it, here's a WIP picture from me. It will likely be the last one since the mystery of why a space wolf is with a DE raider has to be a surprise, I might take some of the paint though.

You do stand a chance. I'm pretty busy this month so the possibility of me actually finishing this by the end of the month is rather low.
I'm painting this like I am Drake (starting from the bottom). Finished the base and the underside of the tank (so I could glue it all together) and now it's time to work on the sides and top!
Happy with the speed of progress so far. Hoping to have it done by the end of next weekend so I can take it to the next game in my Escalation League!

Stop it Bottle, no. You aren't allowed to be so good at painting people and painting vehicles. It's not fair.
Crisis suits are lierally armour for their squishy pilots right?
Also one a side note that even as a tau player this is the first entry of a non SM model.
Power Elephant wrote: Finished the other side. Got two more minor freehands to do, and then I have to do all the metal and finaly OSL.
Very medievalist visions of deamons and hellish nightmare. Is good. Meanwhile thanks to school restarting I can't find the time to get any painting done.
our school's been disrupted by the stormy remains of Hurricane Irma but everyone's ok in our area, just some property damage limbs down etc Power out in a few places, we luckily didn't loose power or have to leave the house to safer area.
Anyway progress on my guy (he's still single and likely to be for a while):
This is his basecoat done, some highlights and washes
I'm in the middle of pin washing and edgehighlighting him atm.
To people who think that my paint schemes are too dark,i'am going for a mercenary & terrorist theme with them,
Only using drab flat colors with a military feel,no fancy paintjobs from me,to see more battletech go check out my lab/blog.
All of a sudden the Terminator I plan to enter seems more than a little... well, little! He shall have to compensate with a suitably big sword or something...
Paradigm wrote: All of a sudden the Terminator I plan to enter seems more than a little... well, little! He shall have to compensate with a suitably big sword or something...
Clearly he should have 2 shields with the shields having mini shields to fit the theme.
Ugh, painting vehicles is no fun to me. Escpecislly with a deadline AND with all the conversion work I put into this one. Just gonna keep on truckin and hope I get done in time.
Painted on two more minor freehands, the first is a strange dragon thing, and the second one is my family heraldry. Painted the barrels at the back of the model, I added a bit of texture to it and used a not so smooth transition for the shading to add to the imperfect feel the medieval art adds to the model. I hope it works. I will go back to the barrels to work on the gold a little more and add a few scratches. Painted a lot of metal too, but at this stage it's nothing interesting. Once I paint the whole thing I will add a glossy finish to it and then paint the cannon and add all the OSL effects.
Ok, so let's try this again... Didn't get finished last month, and I have even more stuff going on this month, so I should totally try to finish something bigger...
bah, count me out for this month, probably next month too actually, unless the theme happens to line up luckily...too busy cranking out a commission job to fit in time to work on my battlewagon unfortunately. - damn shame too, as it's gone from a standard-build with an evil sunz paint scheme, as I initially said with my proof pic...to a kitbashed "supa-kannon" battlewagon, using a baneblade turret and side sponsons...and will probably get a blood axes paint scheme ...ah well, so I'm not painting it this month, but it'll still be sitting there on the bench, ready for a fitting theme in some later month
Hi all just catching up with everything over the weekend (really the only time I get a chance to post)
Nice to see you back Arclaw good luck with the tank
Good work on you Kromlech Ork Guildenstern, I've bought their heads before and have been wondering about getting those guys.
A neat paintjob on some very small models there u971.
You have done very well with your freehand work Power Elephant, impressive stuff.
Shame you can't join us Zobo, always look forward to your entries, now your just teasing us with a cool sounding entry in the future Cool you are getting commission work
WIP from me I'm prep'ed and basecoated . Also can I have your opinions on which head suits the model? The one that came with the model is very small and I was hoping to use this guy as a SM chapter master proxy
Centurion Head - Its slightly bigger than a normal head and has a mean look.
Sternguard veterans head - The leaf trim matches the other trim around the armour on the model.

If you plan on using him as a chapter master, go with the sternguard head. The Centurion one looks cool, but a CM needs more bling on his head.

Thanks for the advice Nev, a very good point, well presented.
Weathering looks pretty dam good Bottle, I like that you have gone to the effort to edge highlight the scratches
I like that scheme as well Oppl, Its what I think of when I picture an IG tank. Can I suggest you do a bit of weathering on the Aquilas, they are very white and flat while the rest of the tank has some weathering on so they stand out and draw your eye. I like the mud in the tracks.

Great suggestion - I hadn't even considered it. This is precisely what a second set of eyes can do. Thanks! I'm not overly sure what to do for them, though as weathering white is a tough one for me. Any ideas? I want to roll with it, just wanna try and do it right yknow?
Sponging on rhinox hide can never go wrong, with moderation. Also some of them look a little shiny, give them a coat of lahmian medium to matt them down.

You should chip it with the green underneath to look like the paint is flaking off to show the camo underneath. Take a brush and the green you used and paint tiny dots and scratches, focus on the edges in particular and don't go to heavy. :-)
I may just bow out of this month. Not making any progress on this thing really and not feeling motivated to paint at all lately. Never have been a fan of painting vehicles and I also just don't really know what to do with this thing from where it's at currently. I mean I have ideas and a vision, but no real motivation or idea how to execute it up to a standard I'd be happy to submit on here. =[
Oppl that stormlord is fantastic.
bottle, i was pretty confident in my weathering skills but yours just looks awesome!
Here's a Wip of my Hellhound 6x6. Plenty more on my P&M thread, feel free to stop by.
Colours are all still very flat, will be sorting that out soon. thought you guys would just want to see it before its finished.
Will be adding camo netting and stowage too.
Some great bits of armour turning up and fantastic weathering going on. I love it. I also love the cadian stormlord, very nicely done too =)
I've sort of gone the opposite this time, trying to go for a quite clean look though depending on time pressures I may do a few scratches on it.
WIP pic below. Still loads to do but I was hoping for a some opinions.
I'm in 3 minds about the claws. I definitely want to try out doing a bit of lightning running along them but I cant decide on a colour.
*Blue would be typical and match the highlights of the black and shading on the angel wings.
*Red because they are called blood claws or some such and they and fits with the whole black/red motif of death company
*Green as a contrast to the red (especially the little gems that are on the claws) and would make it a little different.
The base will be the normal desert I do (zandri dust + usabti higlights then a few sand coloured weathering powders) for the rest of my armies as it matches the board I made.

Having the same issues, but maybe an all night push is required. It would be a shame to not see all that greenstuff work come to fruition.

Good idea. I'll give it a shot on one of the less prominent aquilas and see how it goes - cheers.

That looks ace with the large wheels, really changes up the profile of it in a good way. Is that the stock GW kit otherwise?

Would be ashame to bow out. That thing is looking disgustingly good so far. But I know what its like when you're in a rut or unhappy with produce so I sympathise.
I am done too! Quicker than i thought but i have been waiting to paint that guy since the day he was anounced. It's my first 75mm miniature and im really happy of how he turned out. Hope you guys like it too. Feel free to comment with any suggestions

Yea i had to modify the kit slightly at the back to get it to fit, but yea apart from the sides and the wheels the main chassis is still 100 percent the gw kit.
By the way I bought the 6x6 kit from http://www.modelsandminis.com/ its pretty good stuff but it did take like 5 months to ship. (they were having issues with a mould).
Deciding not to bow out, though doubtful I will finish this model in time. Got a few more layers of paint and shades down today. Slowly but surely it will be done, though it won't be my best work, at least it'll be something.
Kinda feeling you there Drummernathan. I'm probably not finishing the Russ--only thing done is priming and base coat on 2/3 of the hull, and now I can't find the rat rider's gun that broke off, but I'm going to try to at least rustle up SOMETHING, even if its just a quick armored warrior.
We are working on a Warlord Titan for the competition! Here are several pictures where we washed all the pieces. And one of the weapons assembled standing next to a Tau Pathfinder to give you some understand of how big it is! And the last picture is of the legs mostly assembled. It's a HUGE project to say the least.
Phoned it in a bit to be honest, as a couple of people mentioned last month I've not really been pushing myself artistically in the last few months... I'll let it slide this month as I've had less time due to moving back to uni, but next month I definitely intend to try and up my game a little. If anyone has any suggestions of areas I can focus on in that regard and further develop my style, I'm all ears.
My project is entering its final stages, used a pigment on the tracks for the first time and airbrushed the main gun with red. I did have a lot of trouble with the red though. Anyone have any advice on airbrushing red?
Wow, some great projects - this is turning out to be an awesome month.
Powerelephant - the best trick for airbrushing red that I have seen is to pre-shade with green and then thinly give a translucent overcoat of red...sounds difficult but isn't
Check out this tutorial - just skip through it, it is a pretty simple technique actually and gives a fantastic result...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwUtKx4fYsU&t=2s
Anyhow, I am still getting through models faster than normal, so I'm adding a final Wave Serpent for that mighty SPiced hAM!
Quick WIP shot. The tank is finaly begining to look like something. The OSL is still quite faint, I will build it up a bit more but for now I'm satisfied.
loving the conversion insaniak! it's like the first time you see the wheeled taurox conversion.
Metal_Man - you are entering the most amount of 'superheavy' by weight, height, displacement, cost, points value, area, effort and complexity i've ever seen entered for the unofficial painting challenge - BRAVO SIR!!!!
Here is proof of the Warlord Titan, priming and painting now! He's missing a few small weapons and some of the armor plates that are already primed. ARMOR UP!
That thing is bigger than two of my kids!
You're gonna need to use housepaint and a roller for that massive bugger....sure is a whole lot of Armour, though!
I think I’m calling this one done. Need to go back to it at some point for transfers, but like most vehicle projects, at this point I just want it off the workbench. Not that it shows up in the pics, but I did some subtle edge highlighting and some heat-stress weathering on the MM/flamestorms.
But that’s a big chunk of plastic out of my primed pile and ready to fight on the table!
Thanks Chris56! It's completely magnetized too. Started painting already just started the armor plates and other things first, then filling the big stuff this weekend/next week. It's a freaking huge project, probably 80-100 hours of work easily, haha.
You wouldn't believe how long it took to take everything out and just get it cleaned up! INSANE! It's the 650th Titan Warlord in the World, and he's going to be on the table destroying everything soon, can't wait.
I could do some more work on this, but this will have to do. Will definently choose a smaller model for next month. I've had some of the ideas I put on the model in my head for over a year, but for some reason the thing I like most on the model is the mini red OSL on top of the blue OSL!
Anyone wondering about next month, the theme will be some variation of the spooky and scary as is traditional for October/Halloween, if anyone wants to submit a specific theme along those lines go ahead!

Nice. I was going to paint some rubric marines anyway.
Metal_man, I really can't wait to see that thing painted! Good luck with it.
My raider has been going slow, but I hope to get a good bit done this weekend. Working from 4am to 7pm, taking online college classes, taking care of my daughter, and doing basic things like eating and sleeping, leaves me with all of about 5 minutes do do anything during the week haha.
Im going to paint some plague marines, since MK III armour is (technically) the heaviest. Proof: Don't worry, the almost-finished guy was started yesterday. Wish me luck!
Ember
And yes, that is a tipped-over rhino in the background.
Well I might as well call these done. I'm not going to get much more done before the deadline. Unfortunately my matte varnish spray left the model very textured and it turns out not much of my shading and none of the highlighting translated very well in the photos. Oh well. I have two more finished Rhinos and I like how they came out. So I'll still count it as a win.
Verviedi that is looking super cool. Funny how every painter has paint somewhere on their hands when they take shots like this, haha.
Kavika the varnish issue is either humidity or heat usually. There are other reasons but I've had issues when varnishing (Depends how you varnish, a spray can has a much higher risk of any issue) in the heat. I live in N.C. Sometimes with spray cans I will test them on a crappy model or a test model and see, but I've moved to varnishing with the air brush and that eliminates a lot of the issues. Still loving the tanks though!
Hullo!
I have just finished my hellhound conversion and i'm really pleased with it. Shame my lightbox is too small and i dont own photoshop so i cant tweak the background to be all white.
ah well.
I learned about the importance of washing the recesses on this 'tank', cheers to duncan rhodes for that!
also the 404 on the front is freehand and im v proud of myself for it.
Let me know what you guys think!
Also Vervedi, the cloak on that admech dude looks smooth as hell, very nice paintjob!
That Hellhound looks great! I like the wheels instead of the treads; makes it look more like a modern military vehicle (like an LAV-25 or something), although IMO the Chimera chassis looks okay with treads too.
I have yet to really start on my entry, so I don't know yet if I'm even going to bother. Too much other stuff going on for me hobbywise and in my regular life. Maybe I can get a bunch done soon and maybe knock that Razorback out. I don't know.
Hellhound looks really great and the wheels give it a really cool unique style. The videos from Duncan are brilliant aren't they? Never before have I been so happy with my Guard and its all thanks to the methods from the videos.
Oooooh weee! Work was a major PITA these past 2 weeks, but thankfully I managed to get some painting time to relax I'm quite happy, this girl is for a friend who's doing Sigmarines, now it's back to Ironjawz with me!
Drummernathan we all know how that is! There are days, weeks, months, sometimes even years that we just can't get the time because of so many other things! Like Wife, Kids, Work, Parents, Siblings, Vacations, Total War: Warhammer2! You know all those types of things.

Thanks for the info man. I live in NC too and that seems like the most likely explanation.
Well done on getting them both tanks finished kavika0311, I do like a bit of dirt around the tracks and sides. Shame about the Varnish but you can't really see it in the photos.
I'm really liking the reds on your model Verviedi, especially the red cloak.
and to echo several other peoples comments the Hellhound with wheel looks very cool STG.
That's a pretty cool model TheDraconicLord, congrats
I'm working as hard as I can to get this model painted, but I don't think I'm going to hit the deadline... I'm not bowing out just yet because I want to finish, but realistically I won't finish. I've only got about 30 hours total to finish it so ya.

This time it is more of a combination of depression, anxiety, and a lack of motivation to paint vehicles.
Here's my entry, I had no plan of adding a death company dread to my army but I fancied trying to blend some black/greys/blues together and he did very well for his first time on the board (ripped apart a forgefiend, kharn the betrayer then 4 berserkers). I'm sure he should have a scratch or two on him from that fight.

Spoiler:
Moolet that Dread looks incredible! Very nice work!

Thanks both. I'm becoming converted to Vallejo. I've only 2 pots of theirs, german grey and ghost grey and they are both great to work with compared to Citadel equivalents.
Vallejo is where it's at Moolet! And that Dread is sick! I wouldn't want to tangle with him at all, might have to bring like a Supremacy Armor to even dent his badassness.

I also have German grey and I must it's pure magic: Great tone for painting black.
Is next month's theme just generally spooky/Halloween-y, or are we voting on themes? If it's the latter, I'd like to resurrect the Black and White idea as one possibility.
The former! And I'd really like Black and White to be done, it's been in a few polls now and come close a couple of times but never quite won...
Eventually, I might just run it as a side challenge for the people that want to give it a go, the trouble with it in the main threads is that it's not really any good for people painting towards armies or collections, only those that want to muck about with some new techniques. Unless you paint Black Templars or undivided Warriors of Chaos, in which case it's a win-win!

Cool pred, beautiful red, it really looks like painted steel armour rather than a little model.
Idea for next month, keep a loose SpooOOoky theme but i think an awesome theme would be 'Soundtrack month'. Basically you have to link a youtube video of the song that 'Soundtracks' your mini or diorama. It would be nice and open but people would also 100% have to stick to it: No song: No Entry.
It would be an interesting thing to judge as well because creative choice of song would be a big part of process. A cool/fitting song might make you think twice about an entry.
On a more negative note i really do think any variation on 'SpooOOky' is a weak theme, so should at the most be a secondary theme.
Finished da Skull´amma!
Da Boyz wuz buzy wiff da paint!
Hope you like it - it was a fun project and I tried some new things.
And I hope my pics are better than the last times - new camera / phone, new lights ...
Life always wins! Titan ALMOST finished, will submit pics tomorrow after furiously stopping time and applying the finishing touches. Man some really awesome projects this month, ARMOR UP! There is so much freaking armor in this post it's scary!
I agree with Metal_Man - there are a bunch of truly awesome projects this month.
Great job, Gulgog, the shading on the pants and skin looks really good.
KustomerD, that tank is balls-to-the-wall mad coolness! I love it.
Here are my finished vehicles. They are part of an army I have just started that I am thinking I'll call the Seekers of Isha. They are an Ynnari force, which is really just an excuse to paint all three Eldar subraces in the same colour scheme. I have almost finished a Viper and Skyweaver that match these and when they are done I just need to paint a whole bucketload of infantry! I am really happy with my speed this month, which I made a bit of a personal challenge this month. Even though the quality is compromised, I think the force will look fairly effective on the tabletop.
Anyhow, forgive the pics - I found it really difficult to get everything in focus and the first pic had to be just on my kitchen bench to fit everything in one shot. A lot of the subtlety is lost in them as well but you get the general idea.
Looking forward to just one small model in next month's challenge and see you all there!
I had great ambitions with my 5 model entries, unfortunately my Grandpa and then my father-in-law have both been diagnosed with some pretty serious illnesses and it's been a bit of a hectic month.
Wife's not doing too great so it just hasn't been a month for hobbying, I'm afraid. I did get my Predator built, primed and recess shaded, the redemptor dread is in 4 primed parts ready for a recess shade. Then the kaka kind of hit the fan.
Good luck to all, but life got in the way for me this month! October will hopefully be a better month.
Picture of finished Warlord Titan! He is so gigantic the magnets I used for the torso were almost impossible to pry apart! This thing is structurally sound too, Forgeworld did a great job, fast delivery and great quality cast. More pictures coming soon!
Guys, the entries this month are incredible! Metal man, that's one hell of a model! And Chris, that collection of vehicles is superb - really top stuff!
Voting is gonna be tough this time round for sure!
Finished the Stormlord. The other 5 photos for my entry are contained within the spoiler. Funny how five photos just didn't feel like enough! If its okay with the competition host, I may re-take these photos and update before the deadline as I'm not sure I like the lighting seeing them now. In case I don't manage though, here they are.
This really is a terrific month of models - such an array of talent on show.
Final Pics of the Titan, this thing took 100 hours of freaking work this month. And less than half was painting, just cause it was big spaces and pretty easy to airbrush. Trim took forever! In some of the pictures there is the pilot of the Titan to get scale, but you can barely see him. He's actually in the picture above too. This was a very tough month and super fun for ARMOR UP! I wish you guys luck and so glad this community is great.
Wow dude. I thought i deserved a metal for my squiggoth, but holy crap, that thing is HUMONGOUS! It was my first contest, and now I cant even vote for myself! Fantastic job dude.
Well, I'm officially bowing out for this month. Just too much else going on in my life, both hobbywise and other. Looks like it should be fun voting since there's so much vehicular goodness in here (and some nice non-vehicles as well!). Hopefully I can do something for next month.
Well, I managed to finish at the absolute last second (I woke up at 6 this morning to take these photos...)
I didn't have time to crop them, but here they are: my first death Guard models.
Im really happy with the blightlauncher, although the images really don't show it off too well.
All-in all l, they were super fun to paint, and I'm looking forward to doing some more.
Paradigm what are your plans for closing this challenge? If I finish my entry till morning would be too late, If
I'm not asking too much? I''m gonna paint whole night so that I can finish my suits.
@Modock: As usual, I'll wrap things up some time tomorrow afternoon, so as long as your pics are up some time in the next 30 hours or so you're good to go.
@Everyone else: Wow. Holy smeg, I don't think I've seen this many awesome entries come in this fast in quite some time. I'd not checked in here in a few days, and scolling through that last page and this and seeing a Titan, a Baneblade, a whole squadron of Eldar tanks, a beautiful Predator, a squiggoth, a Skulhamma and all the rest, just wonderful. Top work, everyone!
My Vultarax from Forgeworld Zhao Arkhad is done! Only got one picture for ya, didnt really see any point getting more angles, this one shows it all in my opinion. I am very pleased with it. Might put some transfers on it in the future, but no time for that now!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Woah, that picture is really big. Not sure how to fix it though.. hope it's no problem.
Heres my aspiring stormcast hero. Again the idea behind him is that he's just about to finish his training and has a quest to complete before his elevation to one of the Knight rolls i.e knight azyros, knight vexillor etc. By completing this quest he in a way ARMOURS UP therefore becoming a leader for the stormcast to rally around.
This is my first effort at non mettalic metal and wet blending in general. Hope you guys like it and that he can compete with the craziness of the tanks, titans and the rest.
this was the fastest paintjob i've ever done on a pair of knights - these two done in a single month puts my new painting speed record as 1296000 seconds per questoris knight or 0.0000007716049383 QK/s to us Engineers....
Well I'm definitely dropping out of this month... Car decided to die on me so I've been even more busy than normal.. maybe next month! Good luck everyone.
First Tau units for my army are done. Took me a while to decide what color scheme to choose. I wanted a military scheme but after half way they
looked kinda boring so I went full camo. These are a bit different than my usual vivid paint jobs.
Well good luck everybody... I need sleep now.......
Great job as always, Modock! They look really interesting, with such smooth, clean paint and really crisp edges on the camo patterns. A whole army to this standard is going to look incredible.
Un-freaking-believable, Metal_Man and SirDonlad - so much painting!!!
The space marine conversion worked really well, MidgetGems - like all the best conversions, it looks like it just came out of the box that way. I look forward to seeing more pics.
N1ceguypaul - Another great model, I think I might have to steal this idea, too.
Feltmonkey, those Incubi look fantastic!
One of the things I love about this challenge is the inspiration of how everyone comes up with different interpretations on the theme...great stuff.
Pretty Epic stuff everyone, Just time to throw up these final pics up before heading out
I spent a lot of time layering the armour so hope it shows, I'm planning on using this guy as one of the Chapter Master for a Blood Angels successor chapter I've been creating (spending lots of time driving gives me hours to think of things and this have proved an interesting distraction)
Great work getting it finished Keezus I like the purple shading for the green armour.
Modock wrote: Same here, I haven't touched a hairy brush for almost 3 weeks. I did stealth suits this week.
Damn life always gets in the way.
Yeah September seems to have flown by, I thought I was doing ok for the first week then it was the 20th and it still feel like I was still in the same position.
Sir Donald if I can offer you one tip, you have worked so hard to get those bad boys done I'd include at least 1 really big picture (spoilered) of them in my final photos otherwise no one can see you work.

just going to put that in now... Cheers Midget Gems!
Sorry folks, the poll will definitely be up tomorrow. I'm swamped with work at the moment and time got away from me today, but tomorrow I shall make a point of setting it up first thing!
