Hi Y'all

Welcome to my blog, which I will be using as a reason to progress more regularly. First off I have been working on my conversion to count as Belisarius Cawl:

Earthshaker Platform:

Onager Dunecrawler:

Dark Imperium Death Guard:

Some Primaris minions:

Eversor conversion in progress from a Rackham model:

Militarum Tempestus Officers:

Some old paint scheme tests on the Dominus:

Thanks dogg, I spent a lot of time making a green that was pale enough to not be overbearing on mars.

Legs for artillery:

Two Earthshaker Batteries:

Archmagos Crawler WIP:

Some updates:

Bob the Mechanicus Astropath

Leman Russ WIP. Nothing is glued together yet. I wiill probably replace the armor plates on the front and/or back legs with bigger plates from the Chaos Defiler.

Archmagos has his back and mechadendrite dreads coming together. Earthshaker on the left, regular old Onager on the right.

For my Baneblade, I will be attempting to duplicate the bottom half of this, which I found on the internet and is not mine:

Took to the field yesterday, some proxies are still hanging around but here's the army all together:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Newest conversion: Counts as Sergeant Harker. Magos Macrotek! Fittingly, he lives with the artillery in the back.

Tech-Priest Auxilia form a key part of the Mechanicum in battle, making battlefield repairs and bringing weapons of their own to bear on the enemy. Led by a Magos and surrounded by a host of servo-automata, many of the Tech-Priest Auxilia are of the Macrotek order of high techno-arcana.

You have been busy Lots of wonderful, unique minis in this army, and that scrubs / toothpaste green is indeed a nice biologis-friendly departure from the usual Martian red. Amongst all the neat big things I'm quite a fan of those basic trooper conversions, helps maintain the smocks / medical theme while also just looking solid.

And obviously turtlesword is literally awesome

The photos are huge is my only complaint. That said. Everything you do is neato. A admech guard army is wonderful idea especially if it walks.

The baneblade conversion count as dome walker is excellent. My only compliant is it doesnt seem to demonstrate all the weapons possible on a baneblade. Not exactly a bad thing, but something that does matter a bit for game play for thr guy being domed.

IIRC it's only missing a twin heavy bolter, which may well be in there somewhere. Shadowswords are mostly 'just' bought for the volcano cannon, as opposed to sponsonagogo baneblades.

It is missing a twin heavy bolter still, that is correct. I haven't quite decided where I want to put them modeling-wise.

Also I went back through the plog to find pics of him pre-repaint, but no luck. But it was cool to see where some things started, the evolution of the assassin builds in particular. (PS: Still a fan, Callidus was looking good back when )

Oh! I dig the baby mortar too, good size and suitably gribbly legs.

Thanks my dude, the commander is based on a Vostroyan sergeant and I really like how it turned out.

Minor update:

Knight Styrix with "the boys" aka Kastellan Robots.

Second picture shows the start of the banner placement I'm doing for this knight. Knight Magaera and Styrix don't have Tilting Shields so I wanted to do something to break up the somewhat plain and symmetrical chassis. Commander makes a cameo again.

Thanks JoeRugby, and Insaniak. The basilisks are one of my simplest and most effective conversions to date, all thanks to 8th edition removing the gameplay difference between walkers and tracked vehicles!

This weekend Phobos Is going to the Bay Area Open. But first...

3d printing!

More 3d printing!

A whole ton of 3d printed stuff layed out in a mock-environment. My friends and I play Dark Heresy and we've been using these as the game board. Some of the pieces in this picture are a bit old and warped but they will be good placeholders for more proper prints.

And a glass bed to print on! This is a different sort of surface than what I am used to, but my tests so far have had results with PERFECTLY flat bottoms and zero warping, which is great for having things lay super-flat in an exact grid.

I always really loved the "skeletal/undead imperial guard" armies people have made in the past, and wanted to put my own spin on it. Spooky alien science has transformed the dead of my imperial guard regiment into eternally-faithful warriors. Faithful to an absolutely heretical Mechanicus Archmagos.

It's an attempt to get at 'spooky' without defaulting to 'everything spooky is because of chaos', so these ones are because of crazy technology and genestealer DNA.

Wonderful work. Found the Dunecrawler Basilisk conversion on pinterest and was hunting the source since then to ask a simple question: Where's the top part (platform+gun) from? I'm converting an Imperial Guard with walkers only and I'd like to steal the idea ;-) Looks like resin, so probably FW?

The cannon is from a 3rd party company called Quantum Gothic: http://www.quantumgothicwars.com/tabletop-gaming-scenery/quantum-cannon. The casts were high quality.

I love the all walkers Guard idea, I've seen your Ansari Crawlers around myself. I like the conversion and the grey/orange scheme too.

I'm not sure if everything is out of production, but Prodos games who make them now, retired a fair number of kits some time within this last year.

Here's a Titan Mortar for my Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Dwarves/The 9th Age Infernal Dwarves, plus three armiger bodies which are to become my new set of Onager Dunecrawler upper-halves:

Inspired by some great conversions out there on the internet, and Games Workshop's own example conversion of an Armiger when they released rules for Renegade Knights.

The base color is:
1. prime grey or paint dawnstone
2. wash black
3. wash black in a more targeted way
4. drybrush/stipple with the original base color (dawnstone) until it's nice and patchy
5. do the same thing with a shade brighter (celestra grey) to complete the final layer of roughing up.

Some test color schemes for the Steel Legion and one of a Stormtrooper. and then about 15 of the 30 Stormtrooper with Plasma Gun this army contains, most converted because getting those on eBay is.... well pretty bank-breaking.

If you do, try to do the drybrush/stippling step with a very dry brush for a flat plain surface like the sector imperialis 60mm bases have in concrete.

Adeptus mechanicus has a lot of cool units and unfortunately a few goofy models. I'm not a fan of the higgins boat-esque Skorpius Dunerider/Disintegrator, but they are a valuable and important unit.
To get around this problem, I have begun to convert some Thanatar-Calix mechanicum automata to have the weapons loadout of a Skorpius Disintegrator. Heavy stubbers are not yet on.

The paint is in a very rough first stage, but I got all the heavy weapons crew onto their bases which I think is a solid step in its own right:

You can see like in the face washes, helmets weapons grenades are not very done, but I have all the models onto their bases, which again was not a small step. I'll get some better and more specific pictures once I actually finish painting some things.

Anything that wedges more Thanatar into 40k is a win in my book. Smart counts as use too - are you converting it more, or do the stock guns work fine for your gunboat needs? Big ol' fistful of rokkits maybe to replace the siege knuckles, Tau broadside style?

Also way to keep plugging away at the dudeswarm

For the counts as converting, I have removed the default mauler bolt cannons from the arm, and in turn I will add three heavy stubbers. The big fist box will be the missile launcher, not 100% sure on how I will do that conversion as of yet.

The box launcher isn't far off as is, maybe poke some missile heads out of those holes? That's all the GW model has for launchers. Or just paint it with some glowy energy action.

Thanks Joe.

8 months with no updates? Sounds about my speed. Here's some of what I'm working on right now:

I made an Imperial Guard army when the pandemic was first hitting, but they ended up looking a bit blobby/blurry as the uniform/fatigues cloth color and the armor color were kinda same-y. I've decided to depart from that radically by painting their armor orange, and I like the result. If the painting looks sloppy, that's because it is sloppy, there is a lot of cleanup and detailing yet to do.

Some of the metal trim and stuff needs to be picked out, and some lights, and maybe black on the corset. Mostly metal and green-grey.

Main colors and conversion work done on these five here. They are plague marines, one of the last units to round out the Iron Warriors.

That's a good point, the thigh armor/skirts on the plastic stormvermin kind of perfectly mirrors the tau thigh armor.

Ok, progress:

The parts filling in the gaps/propping it up aren't at 100% yet, but you can see how the part fits on:

1. build the front and front/top cabin of a goliath truck
2. put track guards on the chimera

3. file flat a little bit on the track guard where the rivets/flange/whatever would conflict with the goliath's circular weapon mount, and a bit around the front track guard so it creates a vertical face for the front of the goliath parts to fit flush against

EDIT: for better instructional image

I'm happy with how this is coming together, I might try to lower it a couple millimeters, but it's basically as it should be. Next step is filling in the empty space and weapons.

I've recently been working on all my main projects, the Iron Warriors, Skaven Tau, Custodes, and even some Mechanicus too. Mostly trying to base/magnetize/store/paint every model I have sitting around to clear out space and get rid of unbuilt sprues.

The metal color is White Gold from Vallejo's metal color alcohol based paints. They were a bit tricky to get used to. The color is almost silver, it is extremely pale gold. It's mostly noticeable alongside some painted silver, but I'm not quite there yet.

Thanks Olthannon, I was going for something like that. Much more work has been done on them but my picture record taking is slow.

Today we have a squad I'm very happy with, my Chosen for my Iron Warriors. Unfortunately I think my photos came out a bit garbage. Hopefully I can get some better ones once they get primed and painted.

Models are Classic Iron Warrior Warsmith on the left, usable as a chaos lord on foot, and a converted Exalted Champion with the arms and combi-melta from the plastic Exalted Champion removed and put onto a Medusan Immortal body. The most minor of highly ranked officers in this band of Iron Warriors. These two will most commonly form part of one or two Chosen squads as the champion or respective champions, armed with Accursed Weapons and Combi-Meltas. As their Accursed Weapons here are in the form of Axes, they also are correct for a Lord's Power Axe and Exalted Champion's Exalted Power Axe. Kinda weird that the Lord can't have an Exalted Power Axe. Maybe he should be holding a thunder hammer to better fit the weirdly restrictive Chaos Lord weapons options.

The combi-melta chained to the backpack on the Exalted Champion is very cool, but the packpack didn't match the less /daemonicorganic feel of these chosen. Original backpack clipped away and put onto a MkIII Iron Armor backpack like the other Chosen.

These two Chosen represent combi-meltas numbers 3 and 4 for the 10 Chosen. Both armed with maces as their Accursed Weapons, going for the "trench warfare" vibe.

Combi-melta chosen 3 and 4, side views.

Chosen squads can take one power fist per 5, and so here are two power fist Chosen. Each armed with a regular bolter in the other hand.

These two iron warriors are the two out of 10 that can't have a different weapon option going on. Perhaps they are the most junior of the chosen, perhaps the first to die. I tried to give them slightly different personalities/poses, with one aiming more reservedly and the other advancing with bolter arm outstretched.

These two Chosen are armed with additional Accursed weapons in place of their bolters. The Age of Darkness / Horus Heresy MkVI marine power swords I think are an excellent option for right handed power weapons as all these chaos ones seem left handed. One guy has the spikey helmet, and maybe I'll switch his shoulder pad to spiked also. He's got an axe so he's the pointy one. Big mace accursed weapon guy has a space marine terminator shoulder shield so he's the chunky one.

That's it for now, many other projects need documenting but this is what I just got done and converting a whole squad is always fun.

I got this one here:

I got the 25cm version, but maybe the 30cm would be better for larger models. I had an old light box that just wouldn't stay upright, also a cheap amazon one.

Blocking in the colors on my Chosen, plus my counts-as tarantula sentry gun turrets have their main color on with some preliminary shadows, plus the base which took a hugely long time, it's 80mm which just barely fits the old forgeworld bunker once I chopped the heck out of its original scenic base.

Thanks Olthannon, the old forgeworld bunker turret emplacement thing is a sculpt I like a lot.

Sure thing! It's Ionrach Skin for the white/cream color.

More stuff coming along, first of 10 Cataphractii to make up a Chaos Terminator Squad for 40k. Two guys with fists and two guys with "accursed weapons" so far.

Also two of 5 Alpha Legion terminators kitted out as Firedrakes, using their ability to copy wargear and special units from other legions, for Horus Heresy.

It's a good point, I remember classic space skaven tau armies from a decade or more ago with lots of custom weapons, I love that look but one priority of mine in making this army was expandability/the ability to use all the tau models without having to customize each one... that said my goal is to use the tau weapons but try to make the models bearing them have a bit more skaven flavor. It's hard sometimes with things like battlesuits.

In my fluff, they're auxiliaries that had a falling out with the Tau Empire similar to Farsight, and chose to take all their wargear and run. Now, how does all the advanced battlesuit technology work without the Tau to pilot or interface with them? I guess that part is skaven ingenuity.

Olthannon wrote:Great updates Ph34r! The Skaven and Tau bits really gel together well, definitely look worth the pain in the arsedness of putting them together
Thanks, I think so too.

Here's a minor conversion I finally got the book arm onto, it's an Ethereal, parts from a skaven warlock engineer and plague monk.

Thanks, he's my Archmagos and he goes on a walking platform to be Belisarius Cawl in game terms. The 8 eyes is shamelessly copied from Kelbor Hal, leader of the Dark Mechanicum, from the Collected Visions art book:

Haha yeah the Defiler pose, definitely could be about to squish something! Not sure who I'd have be the victim, possibly marines, eldar, orks.

I finally straightened the autocannon barrels on these two Chaos Terminators, which enables me to now prime the whole unit! Black and then leadbelcher will bring them up to speed.

Also building the last 3 marine bodies I had from my new Chaos marines/Legionnaires box. A melta gun because I didn't have any and now I can't take 2 plasma guns in one unit, a close combat guy so I can make a full 10 man close combat unit, and another unit psyker with this one being a conversion. I need to give him a big book somewhere, but he is holding the knife like the official hexfire tome psyker and doing his best "crush you with my mind" pose.

Thanks, it's kind of hard to get the color exactly right, here's how I "documented" it when I first made it:

Celestra Grey: It's the lightest/best grey in my opinion, aside from the new Grey Seer I suppose and Ulthuan Grey
Skarsnik Green: it's a somewhat light and bright, blue-green green
Rakarth Flesh: I decided the end result was slightly not warm enough, I guess?

probably something like, mostly grey, 1/3 of the amount of grey in skarsnik green, 1/2 that lesser amount in rakarth flesh. 6 grey : 2 green : 1 rakarth

Ultimately at a certain point later on I think I added some white to it too just to brighten it up, as I had been washing it with Nuln Oil a lot.

Happy to help, I think that is the most common thing people like about my stuff, that particular green!

More conversions time. The new Astra Militarum / Imperial Guard codex changed the way command squads work. Previously I had 12 veteran plasma gunners for my Astra Militarum and 12 converted classic stormtrooper plasma guns for the Tempestus Scions side of things. Rest In Peace to them…

New command squads have things like banners, voxes, and medics. So here’s me trying to make my guys work again:

2 Tempestus Scion command squad “regimental standard” bearers and one medic so far:

Then a Steel Legion medic:

And two Steel Legion regimental standard bearers:

Phew! Converting metal models is always a bit of a pain. Still going to be more fun than rebasing 15 heavy weapons teams onto 50mm bases.

Nothing too fancy. Here's an almost complete sergeant, just needs a chainsword on his back or waist.

Another very basic conversion of a company commander leading a command squad, with power sword and bolter:

This next one was just cutting down one of the same old cadian sergeant bolter arms and removing a pouch from the back of the steel legion commander to give him a slung bolter:

And one nearly correct command squad. The medic guy needs some more sculpting and fixing to make his hands more natural.

The old terminator warsmith finally got an axe to replace his old lightning claw. His shoulder pads are correct now too, before they were missing one layer of cataphractii shoulder plating.

Counts-as Abbaddon for… why not I guess? Supposedly you can ally him into any legion without messing things up. He’s my Iron Warrior ranking warsmith, probably answers to Perturabo, that sort of thing.

Thanks DJ! With the Skaven Tau I wanted to make sure they had a lot of Tau bits on them so they'd be easy for an opponent to understand/identify. Less creative than classic Skaven Tau armies where every weapon is custom.

My new Chosen Aspiring Champion with combi-melta and accursed weapon, to replace this one with the Axe who should really be an Exalted Chamoion. This new guy needs a Chaos Icon on his backpack though, forgot to do that before the picture.

These guys are Tempestor Primes and can no longer take chainswords or really any melee weapon at all. Wack. They need to be redone to be legal.

Other things from old projects that need finishing/fixing, my Ironstrider Ballistarii. I'm not happy how the gun mounts worked out so I need to make a new gun mount from the ground up. Left arm tendril is just for show.

Thanks yeah, I like red as a glowy color contrasting lighter colors.

In building all my old partial sprues of skitarii, I have finally addressed my age-old annoyance with not really being able to tell my skitarii Ranger Alpha apart from the regular rangers. Just repeating a method I've done before in taking some cog halo type bits from electropriests and putting them on other stuff.

Doing the same thing about chaos cultists, the old type ones from the chaos vs dark angels (?) starter set.
My first squad has kind of medieval kettle helmets/hard hats look going on, this squad will have more tech cultisty hoods, this way I can tell them apart if I put the two units next to each other in a game ever.

And iron warrior Abaddon getting his axe closer to being ready, chopped it off to extend it so he isn't short-hafting it so extremely much, removed the old hand and prepared the pinning.

Abaddon conversion basically done, I probably copied this axe conversion from someone else on the internet but I can't find an example.

Two more vox casters with non-repeated poses, fixed medic 1's hands being awkward, need to bridge the gap. Made a second medic by just slapping a medic bag in place of a bed roll on a lasgunner. Sculpted gloves (roughly) on all the cadian arm parts on all the sergeants and other arm swaps, so their hands match one another.

Put painted circles of thin cardstock (?) on the 4 turrets because, I guess their kinda imperfect lumpy tops bugged me, I never could get them flat without taking out the magnets and redoing that it seemed.

Also drilling two holes for magnets in the bottom so they can go in my cases:

Thanks, yeah I love that sorta green. Pastels in general really.

A solid chunk more updates, firstly Abaddon has all the basic paints on just about:

He can also go without the cape too, currently it just kinda fits on:

He is one of the last models I needed to get from partially done/bits to painted, the Iron Warriors project is nearly at a more or less "complete" stage.

The formerly highest ranking Warsmith in my force is done being rearmed with an axe in place of a power claw, because the special axe is just way better the way they've decided to do the Chaos Lord right now.

Chaos chosen champion also nearly complete.

Here's a balefire tome guy, I'm happy with the modeling though the picture makes the painting look a bit ass right now. Okay actually it looks a bit rough in real life right now too but whatever, he will get a better face and flame and some details and be fine eventually.

For the Mechanicus, I have about ~15 or so work in progress vanguard and rangers from one whole box plus some random bodies. Here's three of special weapons for the rangers and vanguard each:

Skitarii Vanguard and Ranger Alphas now have a free special melee weapon, so I have basically immediately turned around my nearly done Alphas and re-armed them:

That's a bunch of stuff out of the way or nearly out of the way for now.
I also spray primed black:
-10 horus heresy mechanicum tech thralls
-3 mechanicum thallax
-3 chimera turret heavy bolters and 2 hull heavy bolters
-some servo skulls that my mechanicus tech priest dominuses are supposed to have attached to them
-3 mechanicus serberys raiders

Field ordnance batteries progressing in their painting, and two of them are now actually glued onto bases:

Got some heavy bolters for my infantry squads to be a bit more anti-infantry when they're running around the board going for objectives and a lascannon wouldn't be as relevant.

And finally some mortars transferred over to their new 50mm homes:

Some of the 50mm bases still need filling in the rim connection area.

They're the Steel Legion metal heavy bolter teams. The stocks come as a part of the heavy bolter they are operating.

I cut up a bunch of these: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Sector-Imperialis-65-75-90MM-Oval-Bases

Originally I got those bases for the heavy weapons, the 60mm (65mm) Sector Imperialis bases. Those were ultimately cut down to 50mm circles and put on to the bottom-most part of a 50mm GW base after I sliced the entire top off and filled the gap with putty. I used the oval Sector Imperialis bases from the same set to make my big 100mm scenic bases.

Here are some pictures I had taken while making the bases:

Thanks guys, I was inspired by a similar conversion of a Krieg Ursula Creed. Headswaps plus a little detail here or there goes a long way.

Yeah, steel legion heavy bolter teams have stocks, I'm guessing to better emulate a ww2 germany mg42 team operating the weapon prone like that.

Right now, assembling a few other random HQs for my main armies, like this Dark Apostle for my Iron Warriors:

They're standing on small mounds of miliput putty to help them not sink into the muddy basing as much.

Thanks for sharing how you did the bases, using them to build the patterns is genius. I’ve cut up some 25mm bases to add some variety, but I think my flyer bases will be getting this treatment when I get to them. Cheers!

Also that skull face on the steel legion Ursula is really sinister, I like it!

I think it's a good way to do big industrial/urban bases, was pretty high effort though! I'd love to see what you come up with.

Thanks! I think it's nearly ready to prime.

Lord Solar Leontus now has a head, not quite permanently affixed:

The progression of Steel Legion officers:

More almost done 50mm bases, should be the last ones (?)

The command squad bases basically ready too, put magnets in them and drybrushed:

That's awesome! I'll have to put a shout out in my zone mortalis/necromunda stuff when it actually gets finished.

I've decided to get some photos of my Iron Warriors that I never necessarily even really photographed. Also trying to get better with my photography, trying to get a darker background.

Lovely work on that Creed mate, and these Iron Warriors have some serious heft to them in posing and all the metallics.

These are quite nice. But some of them seem to be missing stripes

Jokes aside, they look lovely.

Another successful Steel Legion headswap, I like it! The Iron Warriors look great, the solid yellow looks cool, but stripes are cooler as for the photo taking, the light seems a bit strong on them to me making it hard to spot what’s highlights and reflections on the metallics.

Thanks, yeah I like the heavily washed leadbelcher for Iron Warriors color.

Yes very fair! Everyone has the shoulder painted the bright color but only a few have the actual stripes so far.

Thanks, stripes will be coming! And yes, I think you're totally right, I have been working on how to address that. The two solutions seem to be having more soft lighting coming from the front rather than only above the model, and to manually lower the brightness control. I'm trying to work with that now.

For now, the lord solar continues:

An update to the previous iteration which was the front two legs being replaced, I had to order more bits:

All four robot horse legs now replaced with even more skeletal legs! This is a slight modification on a conversion I saw on the internet of a steel legion Leontus.

Progress continues on the Lord Solar conversion. I believe my cat absconded with the original head but I had prepared so I’ve been set back a bit getting a new head ready.

Meanwhile I have built 4 of 6 sagittarum custodes, and I liked the models so much I plan to expand from having 2 units of 3 to 3 units, 9 total.

Looking very grim dark in here, great work. Those heavy bolter teams are awesome - simple but effective. What's your paint recipe for that uniform please?

Paint scheme is as simple as can be... it's just the paint Ionrach Skin from games workshop, and then Nuln Oil washed over it in various locations. I try to have the main large surfaces of Ionrach Skin be the plain color with not much tint from wash. The logical conclusion to this color scheme is highlighting with 50/50 Ionrach Skin and white on the ridges, but I'm not there yet, my painting process typically leaves highlights to extremely late stages.

My Eldar craftworld, after years sitting in a case unfinished, slowly get ready for Crusade:

Thanks Olthannon, I've been getting a lot of these Eldar painted over the last weeks. I'll get some more pictures when things are more done.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with the Corax White color of white myself, and it's very simple to paint.

I've got the spiritseer almost painted now but, I got distracted real quick working on a wraithknight:

There are some areas where the paint is messed up by the primer. I've been progressing on fixing these areas but currently there are some issues. Overall though the wraithknight is a nice model I think.

Yep agreed, the bronze on the latest one is excellent. I love all the bright Eldar colour schemes of the craft worlds, but in my head this is how I think I imagine the various constructs. Very ghostlike and lithe but deadly.

Thanks guys. I did the gold armor as a bit of an experiment, some older paint schemes in this army went a bit more heavily on the gold, though I ended up scaling it back and doing predominantly white.

I’ve also now been working on a wraithknight:
