Maelstrom's Edge News - Sig Jammer STL Release - Pg16 @ 2017/09/29 05:10:07

Post by: Spiral Arm Studios

We are proud to announce that the third Maelstrom's Edge faction has now launched, with a range of plastic models. We present to you... The Broken!

From the factories and the slums, the mining complexes and the farms of the galaxy come the Broken, a growing movement of citizenry angered by the lack of opportunity to escape the Maelstrom. They are a diverse mix of workers, aliens, and rogues left on doomed worlds by the ruling parties.

These survivors take matters into their own hands after being left behind. They pool their resources and knowledge in a communal effort to escape the Edge. Derelict ships are repaired. Affluent people’s ships are stolen. Government ships are commandeered. Any ship available is pressed into service for the Broken. They are a group unlike any ever seen in the galaxy. Fear, hate, anger, need fused them, these abandoned people, into an unstoppable force with one goal - escape the Edge. The Broken is a term used to unify all such desperate people across the Edge. Their motivation, methods, and sanity vary wildly from fervent revolutionaries to callous pirates to the few who have stared into the maw of the Maelstrom only to come away unhinged.

The Broken are available for purchase now at the Maelstrom's Edge webstore. You can also check out the unit cards and faction rules at our brand new online force listing section.

Half a dozen models can be built from a single set of sprues, with enough options for all of your sci-fi civilian modeling desires to be fulfilled. Suitable as proxy models, conversion fodder, and part swaps for other ranges, there are plenty of uses beyond Maelstrom's Edge, so those spare parts you have left over when building a Broken force will have plenty of uses.

The kit is extremely versatile, with every arm, torso, legs and head a distinct part and combination. No hands are built in to the weapons so they are easily switchable with other models, and the entire kit is almost fully parts compatible with our Karist and Epirian lines, allowing for rogue Karist and Epirian forces to represented, as well as converts and captured equipment.

The kit also has unprecedented diversity for a plastic sci-fi civilian range, featuring plenty of female heads and gender agnostic heads, as well as large mixture of alien heads with variant poses to ensure you can build a force themed around a specific alien type if you so desire.

Keep your eyes on our The Comm Guild website for assembly instructions and more articles featuring The Broken in the near future.

We are also pleased to report that this release kicks off the start of our increased release schedule, with a release planned every month. Make sure you follow us on facebook to see all of our releases as they are revealed!

Very nice. Also, would make a good starting point for Necromunda Scavies.

They'll also be great for civilians/non combatants in just about any near future/sci fi setting.

Doesn't someone make 28mm hands with tools? I though Mad Robot but don't see them there.

Anyway, point being a definite buy from me.

Oh and they're $27 for 12 models if anyone's wondering.

Yeah, I think Anvil's Regiments parts will be a perfect match for these, Kyoto

Where are all the rest of the sweet Broken pics stored at, I think the product page actually doesn't show very many! Loving the attitude on this guy:

I'm definitely picking up a few sets!

With every new release it is getting harder and harder to continue to stay out of MEdge. Love this new faction, and very interested to see what that big gribbly is fighting the robot in the artwork.

*sigh*... What's another box of minis in the house anyway, really?

Some nice, versatile sprues you have there. I'm looking forward to build my first models with them. And the bits box will be filled with useful infantry bits afterwards, too.

OK I was thinking about maybe buying one box for INQ28 and Necromunda conversions, but between the Awesome Space Revolutionaries background and that ginger mental case in the fur coat on the art there I'm seriously tempted to get a small ME force now.

Really happy to see these out in the wild after so much time spent planning and developing them! Plenty more to come over the coming months to add to the Broken's rabble.

Just a reminder to anyone new to the background of the game that there are plenty of stories about the Broken in our two short story collections, Tales from the Edge: Emergence and Tales from the Edge: Escalation.

Yeah I went in for two packs (which will build 2 dozen, and more if I nab some spare torsos!)

With shipping to the US an extremely reasonable $3, it only came out to $53 total including shipping - that's crazy! I think it might be $58 if you don't have the VIP subscription to the site (which gives 10% off, it prompts you if you want to add it at checkout) but still, just nuts.

Now back to scheming on various ways to use these

With the right paint job you could use them for cultists especially with those alien heads for mutants

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Sorry, I've been looking forward to this release for a while now

Two reasons for this:

1. Great models for both ME and other sci-fi skirmish games.

2. I can't wait to gun down this rebel scum with my Karist army.

Yeah, ME is a very good game, but when you've only got 2 armies to choose from, and a select number of units, it did start to feel a bit too 'samey.'

This third faction is a welcome boost for the game.

There is that of course, and also personally there was the fact that the two faction that the game started with both held little appeal to me. The broken are much more my style, in terms of design, backstory, and hopefully game play.

Yeah, the Broken incorporate various alien species into their forces, not all of which are human-sized. These will be added to the range over time.

You'll notice that our factions all have a big (50mm-ish) centrepiece model as an option and The Broken are no exception. It is not the next release, but it is on the way!

Question: Is it possible to build an equivalent points value force to the MEdge box set forces with the Broken Sprues? How many does one need?

The best part about these guys is the creativity it allows the player. This theme is something that interests me and have been wanting to see in a game for a long time. The ability to put old pieces to use is a big selling point to me.

We're really excited to see these in the wild now! I can understand how the Broken have a lot of appeal in the variety of their organization, and how they represent the "underdog" in the Maelstrom's Edge universe. Saying that, both the Epirian Foundation and the Karist Enclave aren't quite so monolithic as they might first appear. When you dig into both their backgrounds, you quickly realize there's a lot of potential for internal conflict, and there's no easy answers about who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. As we expand the fiction, you'll see this more and more.

And then there's the Remnant . . .

The Broken are a horde army, so their units are really cheap, points-wise. The starter set forces come in at around about 120 points. For an equivalent points value in just the 4 Broken units available now, you can do it with 11 sets (66 models), which would set you back around US$150. Not bad for a horde force.

There will be other units released for them in the nearish future as well (and I will likely be working up a few 'unnoficial' units along the way as I start playing with conversions, for those interested in such things ) that will help soak up some points when it is time to expand from there

Excellent stuff - I wonder if fluff-wise one can justify the Broken 'liberating' some Epirian mechs to give some bulk to their army list?

The second story in the Emergence book is about a character named Mama Bot, a former Epirian who could commandeer mechs.

Yeah, I've been tinkering with an idea for a renegade bot handler unit, who would control a bot mob comprised of Spider and/or scarecrow frames, with slightly reduced stats and Broken weapons replacing the Epirian armament.

The story is called "Little Bots" and was written by Rob Ziegler, one of the well established SF authors (incl. Alastair Reynolds!) we signed up to write in the Maelstrom's Edge universe. It's a fantastic tale, one of my favourites, and showcases the kinds of crossovers that can happen in the chaos of the Edge.

I should also mention that the story is found in the Tales from the Edge: Escalation collection, not the Emergence volume.

Have to say this is a fantastic looking set!

As others have said this is going to have so much use, beyond Medge even.

Personally think they would be ideal for Rogue Star, and making up some of the random and eclectic mix of characters you can play in that game.

We at Spiral Arm Studios are proud to announce the immediate release of the Karist Angel Hellblaster unit. A valuable addition to any Karist force and our first ever resin model! It seems fitting to release a monstrous creature on Halloween!

The Angel Hellblaster is a juvenile form of an Angel. Larger than a minnow but smaller than a mature Angel, juvenile angels can take many forms, but Karist Keepers try to goad certain Minnows into a Hellblaster form for the many tactical advantages the Hellblaster type offers.

First and foremost, the Cybel Blast ability sets these guys apart from the rest of the Karist forces. Using a powerful template blast, they can really hold their own.

Cybel Blast: Range 24", SHO 2+SB, PEN 4, DAM 1, Special: AoE (SB), Explosive (6+).

The full Angel Hellblaster profile and force builder elements can be found on the Force Lists section of the Maelstrom's Edge website.

Two distinct models are available in a single pack:

The Hellblaster sits on a 44mm base, the same as the Epirian Spider Drones and Hunter Warmechs. Here's what the Angel range looks like now:

If you have wanted to build an all-Angel army, we are just one model away from it being completely viable, and the Angel Hellblaster will be the Hammer of your force.

The Angel Hellblaster is available now in the Maelstrom's Edge webstore.

These weapons are resin, with slightly up-armoured Karist troopers carrying and operating them. One of the weapons can now be added to your basic Karist Trooper squads for +1 to +2 points, or you can build an entirely new Anvil unit with two heavy weapons - the Karist Trooper Heavy Squad.

Weapon and unit rules are available on the Karist online unit cards section of the Maelstrom's Edge website.

The models are available for purchase right now at the Maelstrom's Edge store.

You'll also notice that the kit comes with a Karist trooper head which has the mask removed, revealing the human underneath.

The above model is also demonstrating the alternate arm option, holding a cybel ammo cannister. Parts are broadly interchangeable with the rest of the Karist range, opening up further options and conversion possibilities!

Hey those are really nice! Good job on the new weapon designs and the heavier trooper armor nods to the elites... Also like the mods to the helmets (tri-eye, more angular). And of course, the shark-gills on the bracers.

Pretty impressed guys, these are nice additions!

Seriously, good job, it's pretty damn sexy -

Yeah, I'm having a play with a couple of these now. I'm seriously in love with the lance and the multi-barrel grenade launcher.

They're fantastic models, and the resin caster is some sort of wizard.

And... ordered. :-)

Any chance you can have pdf files with the cards in for each faction that get updated? The print webpage thing hasn't worked for me at all and I have to print screen, then crop, paste into a program I can use measurements in and adjust the size to card size before printing.

I've been waiting to do an order once a few of these new sets are out.

Do the troopers come with 2 of each heavy weapon option or just 1 of each?

In addition to Gimgamgoo's feedback, I think that the Karist weapon summary is missing at least one of the new heavy weapons.

The Angel Hellblaster's Cybel Blast and the two new heavy weapons (Cybel Lance & Ripper Heavy Grenade Launcher) are not on the summary yet.

We're working on updating that now, but in the meantime, the stats for those weapons are in our online force builder:

https://www.maelstromsedge.com/medge/forcelist.jsp

Just go to the relevant unit's card and at the bottom there is a summary of each unit's equipment and abilities.

We're still working through adding all that info into the force builder, but those new weapons have definitely already been added.

Spiral Arm Studios are proud to present our latest release in our continuing one release per month cycle - The Karist Keeper.

This high quality resin kit contains one Karist Angel Keeper model with two weapon options and a 25mm base. The cybel Goad can be assembled in a variety of angles for added dynamism. This Command model enables an all-Angel Karist army to be fielded, creating a very visually distinct force.

Angel Keepers are a strange, isolated offshoot within the Karist Priesthood. For hundreds of years, the Keepers of the Karist Enclave have enslaved the alien creatures known as Angels, keeping them docile using regimented doses of cybel energy. The Keepers experiment on their captives, using different forms of cybel energy and electromagnetically charged cages to shape the Angels, encouraging them to grow new limbs or shapes to match the Enclave's requirements. While all Karists are secretive, Keepers take this mantra to another level. Keeper Initiates hand-picked from amongst the ranks of Novitiate priests secretly study sacred texts from venerated Keepers on both the Karist faith and the complexities of caring for the Angel creatures. Some Initiates drop out when they witness the trapping of Angel Minnows with tainted cybel energy. But those who persevere with their training find Angels to be magnificent, transcendent beings, and pledge their lives to the cause. Junior Keepers undertake a vow of silence, abandoning common human pursuits to focus solely on the miraculous Angels. Keepers study Angels for many years, learning to train and even speak to them in a rudimentary, computer-assisted, language. Those that graduate to the full rank of Angel Keeper undergo surgery to replace their vocal cords with a cybernetic enhancement, effectively allowing them to 'speak' the language of the Angels.

Keepers are the least public of the Kaddar sect, having little to do with local populations, but fulfilling the critical role of Angel harvesting and training. On the battlefield, Keepers are tasked with marshalling Angel units to attack the enemy, an often tricky prospect. As the Angels feel the effects of mass and gravity far stronger than their other senses, Keepers can lead Angels around using the pulsed gravitic generator attached to their voicebox. The combination of sound and gravitic waves is irresistible to smaller Angels, but headstrong Mature Angels often ignore these orders if more tempting prey is available. Therefore, Keepers also utilise grenade launchers equipped with Swarmer rounds to douse enemy units with Na-Cybel. Not only do enemy units become incapacitated through temporary euphoria, but the Na-Cybel also draws the attention of any Angels nearby. When a Keeper and an Angel are in harmony, the consequences for their enemies can be devastating.

Weapon and model rules are available at the Karist online unit cards section of the Maelstrom's Edge website.

The Karist Keeper is available for purchase right now at the Maelstrom's Edge store.

Armed with that cybel goad and painted red, he would make an awesome guard for any supreme leader named after the muppet who sold smack on Sesame Street.

The helmet that covers his face and the right half of his head. Clearly, battlefield head gear should cover the whole cranium, so that gap where you can see his left eye and temple and this service studs must be a hole in otherwise serviceable gear.

Spiral Arm Studios are proud to present their latest release - the Gnolti - a large, brutish alien which fights alongside the Broken. This four part resin model is the biggest we've ever made and is available now on the Maelstrom's Edge webstore.

The Gnolti are large, slow moving creatures with strength many times that of a human. Gnolti evolved on the high gravity moon orbiting the gas giant Encelasa, and were amongst the first alien species met by humanity. Many Gnolti remain on their homeworld, but some take up a nomadic life across the Spiral Arm, earning money with their bulky frames to send back home. Originally hired and transported to systems requiring extreme manual labour or exposure to elements lethal to humans, their normally calm, thoughtful temperament made Gnolti easy to integrate into human society. Gnolti are extremely loyal to those who treat them well, gladly risking themselves to protect their friends. Despite being incredibly useful, Gnolti are often denied berths on planetary evacuation ships due to their extreme size. Gnoltis have few opportunities to escape the Maelstrom, and stranded Gnolti are a common recruit into the ragtag warbands of the Broken, where their physical power can be a huge asset.

It takes an incredible amount of punishment to bring down a Gnolti in battle. Besides their massive strength and incredible toughness, Gnolti are blessed with an extreme regenerative trait that allows them to heal in just minutes massive wounds that would easily fell other species. Gnolti may be slow to anger, but once roused, their rage is hard to quench. A rampaging Gnolti is an image impossible to forget for those lucky enough to survive their attack. Frequently a Broken ringleader won't even arm their Gnolti comrades, as the spectacle of an enraged charging Gnolti can disrupt all but the most disciplined defensive lines. This near legendary reputation means that on the battlefield, Gnolti become a primary target of the enemy, regardless of whether they should be or not. The Broken gladly leverage this notion and use Gnolti as a screen for their more vulnerable units. The ferocity and size of a Gnolti is even used as a distraction tactic, drawing the fire of enemy troops so that other Broken can manoeuvre unhindered, to devastating effect. The Broken do not take the sacrifice of Gnolti lightly. At the end of each battle, Gnolti are given first pick of any loot that was captured, and every member of the warband stops by to wish thanks to the Gnolti they served with, or to pay homage to those Gnolti that didn't survive.

The Gnolti rules are available as always at the Maelstrom's Edge website, in the Force Listings section. Equipped with the ability to regenerate, and with massive fists to plow through enemy lines, this powerful model is a solid centrepiece for Broken detachments.

This is a four part resin model which has some posing flexibility at the forearms. Overall, the Gnolti has a mostly fixed pose designed to show the lumbering power of the model.

The Gnolti is available for purchase right now in the Maelstrom's Edge webstore.

I honestly find this a hard statement to believe.
Every model I've ever had has been of far better quality than any I've had from other manufacturers.
I'm not scraping plastic mold lines from between spikes like on GW models. I'm not getting wrong parts in boxes like I always seem to get with Bolt Action and Gates of Antares. I like Mantic models, but MEdge quality is in a different league entirely. The resin for MEdge has so far been perfect, barely any clean up needed and never a bubble or miscast.
I know some people dislike some of the aesthetics, but I'll keep buying this top end stuff for whatever sci fi game I'm playing.
The only dislike I have is that the main Angel is too monopose, but if you only use one in an army, it's not a problem.

I put my Gnolti together tonight. Another awesome model. I'm just glad it survived the bubblewrap and flat packaging Wayland sent it in.

I love the Gnolti, I like what I see with the broken, but the starter armies do nothing for me. So much so that someone has 3 of the battle for Z? On consignment at the FLGS for $30 each brand new and I have passed on it. They might be crisp right now, but we would have to see how well the mold holds up in comparison to gw after 40,000 shots.

Take off the fanboi filter for a sec and you can't even pretend the detail on the Gnolti isn't leagues above the rest of the range.

The resin mould gets re-cut every 30 shots. Many of the plastic sprues have already done 40,000 shots too and are just as crisp now as they were then - they are rated for 250,000.

It's better than the plastics, certainly. That's pretty much a given... resin is always going to give crisper detail than polystyrene. It's on par with the other resins released so far, though... they've all been superb.

Wow... I made it to over 30 years playing wargames before being called a fanboi.

I'm not (yet) a fan of the MEdge rules, but the figures are all top quality. I assume to comment you've bought or own every single one - particularly the resins.
My personal favourites are actually the Karist heavy weapons troops in resin. They are as well cast and sharp as the Gnolti.

I also wasn't referring to the looks, or style of the models either. I was comparing them to the quality of the casting. I've played a lot of games and collected a lot of figures in 30+ years and the MEdge range is by far the best cast set of wargaming figures. I've yet to have any bad casts.

He might mean the design. To me most of their previous stuff is on the level of the most uninspired GW mid-90s plastic designs. This guy has a much more unique and appealing design, plus a dynamic and interestingly pose.

Makes the mostly boring Gates of Antares designs look like a work of genius. This guy, on the other hand, suddenly has a completely different aesthetic that looks modern, has a dynamic pose and a somewhat unique aesthetic. A huge step up and I certainly hope they keep going in this direction.

Ok. I'll agree to disagree with you.
I hear this phraase "stuck in the 90's" all the times on this forum - mainly from GW fans like yourself. I don't understand what it means. Honestly. Do you mean the figures are in a stood pose rather than modelled halfway through some sort of running pose? mid fist swing? Balancing on tendrils? Most GW stuff these days is what you seem to be calling "dynamic". I personally like my models to look like they're stood still. Mainly because when I look down at my gaming table, the figures are actually stood still. Seeing a figure in a running pose always looks silly when the model itself is still. But each to their own. Further to this 90's thing. GW used to make models in the (late) 90's that could have bodies and legs at all kinds of angles, arms positions too. Nowadays most are monopose. How is this an improvement over the 90's? I know GW now cover their models in loads of tiny details so this is an improvement, unless ofc it's yet more skulls or rune acne.

The recent resin models coming out of SAS are a delight though, and I for one are glad the fantastic resin Karist Heavy troops are in "stood still" non-dynamic positions.

I don't remember as many kits with the posing flexibility of the Maelstrom's Edge plastics back in the 90s. Certainly they didn't have the level of detail that the ME ones do.

Soldiers don't tend to shoot their guns while doing a ballet, so I don't have a problem with more stationary leg poses personally.

I'm loving the Bolshoi Revolution myself, but I wouldn't say the poses were the problem with the Epirians and cultists. I don't want to get into the whole thing again, but I will agree that I love Medge's newer, improved sculpts.

The Sig Jammer is the latest resin release for Maelstrom's Edge and helps the Broken counter the technological superiority of their adversaries. As usual, the unit's rules can be found in the online unit card section of the Maelstrom's Edge website, where you are able to learn about the specific rules of the Tech Disruptor (pile on those Suppression Tokens!) and the other equipped weapons of the Sig Jammer.

The ramshackle fleets of the Broken don't possess extensive R&D departments or mass production facilities, but what they lack in investment, they make up for in unregulated ingenuity and daring invention. The Broken is a haven for technological savants and rebellious hackers, rulebreakers ostracised and hunted by a society scared of their technological prowess. Whether driven to the Broken by the Maelstrom or the authorities, these maverick inventors are encouraged to experiment and tinker. These 'Jammers' soon thrive among the Broken ranks, using their skills to break into computer networks, disrupt signals, and generally set technology against their users. It is a rare mercurial talent to be able to invent the kind of disruptive equipment the Jammers carry, and sending a Jammer Savant deep into enemy territory is not a viable strategy. Instead, Broken leadership encourages anyone with a natural aptitude for technology to become an apprentice, or 'Sig Jammer'. In peacetime, these neophytes are a mixture of servant and apprentice, taking care of a Savant's every need, or searching for the particular parts needed to complete the Savant's latest technological masterpiece.

Once the Broken go to war, Sig Jammers are given disruption tech and thrust towards the enemy to cause havoc. A Sig Jammer's average lifespan doesn't tend to be terribly long, yet there is never a shortage of souls looking to become one. In fact, in some Broken societies, a lottery has to be held to select new Sig Jammers from amongst all the hopefuls. This is easier to understand when the alternative is being drafted into a Broken Rabble unit, which is roughly akin to being thrown into a meat grinder. In battle, Sig Jammers sneak near enemy lines and wage short-ranged technological warfare on the enemy, degrading their weapon systems and disrupting their broadcast frequencies. Sig Jammers project a localised disruptive field from their Tech Disruptor beam weapons to hamper electronic devices, disorienting or shutting down enemy targeting and support systems. Sig Jammers also use their arm-mounted targeting scrambler for protection, sending out dozens of false positives to enemy targeting computers, causing additional confusion and pandemonium amongst their adversaries.

The Marsayan Hypnotist is the next resin release for the Broken faction in Maelstrom's Edge. The first 'Add-On' unit type available for the Broken, the Marsayan Hypnotist can be added to different Broken squads to help protect them from enemy fire, as detailed on the model's profile card in the online unit card section of the Maelstrom's Edge website.

Marsays are not naturally gifted fighters, nor are they a particularly good shot. With their long limbs, clumsy gait and large bulbous eyes, Marsays don't seem a threat. Disguised behind those eyes, however, is their remarkable ability to influence the mind of others. This is a slumbering ability that most Marsay cannot consciously steer, only presenting itself when the Marsay is angry or fearful. There are some, however, who can exercise this power at will, giving them frightening control over those around them. At a distance, a Marsay can subtly suggest to the enemy to perhaps choose a different target to fire at. Up close, they can create much more intense hallucinations or make an opponent become violently ill.

There are rumours that a great Marsayan empire existed, comprising dozens of worlds, stretched across multiple systems. Driven by the most influential telepaths, the Marsayan Empire was thought to be deeply unequal and aggressive towards other cultures. Neighbouring human worlds, either threatened or jealous of the Marsayan abilities, banded together to attack, and most of the Empire was exterminated. The surviving Marsays fled their home worlds and learned to hide amongst human populations. All official records of the Marsayan civilization were wiped out by the arrival of the Maelstrom. Today, Marsays are mostly black market merchants by trade. Common sights in bazaars across the Arm, they are respected for their business acumen and the quality of their wares. Marsayan Ranja is an especially popular liqueur. Equally well known, however, is the Marsayan Swindle. Many an unsuspecting buyer at a Marsay market stall has suddenly felt a little nauseous and returned home with a purchase they can't quite explain.

Marsays still hold a deep fear of being imprisoned or killed for their gifts, and deny or downplay their telepathic potency. This fear of human government drives them to hide amongst the shadows of society, and even with the approach of the Maelstrom few are willing to risk being caught influencing their way onto an evacuation ship. Marsays are naturally drawn to Broken Freeports, where humans and xenos peacefully intermingle away from the sight of authoritarian government. Marsays often join Broken fighting forces to procure plundered goods they can later trade on the black market, and it is on the battlefield that their hidden talent for manipulation is often revealed. Marsayan hypnotists are valued on Broken patrols, as they can silently neutralize threats and do not care for even the thickest armour. Whilst these slight, frail creatures are not physically imposing, when they delve into the minds of their enemies, they can make the most hardened warrior flee in terror.

Pick up your Marsayan Hypnotist from the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

We at Spiral Arm Studios are proud to present our latest model - the Epirian Master Handler. This alternate command model allows you to lead your robotic force with the ultimate robotic Handler. We previewed this model at Salute 2018 where it sold out very quickly, and now it is available on general release for everyone!

Rules are available immediately as normal on the Maelstrom's Edge website Force Lists section. As you can see there, a lot of interesting equipment is available.

The sprue contains enough parts to build any of the combinations in the rules, and has two variant bodies and legs for different posing. The real interesting bit is the backpack and supporting mech arm structure though, which is fully ball jointed, allowing a huge range of posing and angles. We originally wanted to make this kit in resin, but the complexity and detail of the mech arm parts demanded plastic and we are very glad we went that route!

The Epirian Foundation became one of the dominant forces in the Spiral Arm for two reasons: its terraforming technology allowed the Foundation to convert barren worlds into productive and verdant paradises, and its legions of robots and drones allowed it to harvest resources from inhabited planets and desolate asteroids alike. Both would be nothing, however, without Bot Handlers striding amongst their robotic charges, directing their actions and optimising their workflow. The limited AI of Epirian bots means that the true power lies in a Handler's control, and for many, training to become one of the Foundation's machine shepherds is the ultimate career to aspire to. By the time a Bot Handler reaches the hallowed status of Master, they are the Foundation's most valuable resource, guiding entire robotic divisions and piloting whole squadrons of starships on their own. They are so precious, in fact, that their corporate superiors overlook all manner of eccentricities and odd behaviors, both of which become increasingly common the longer a Handler plies their trade. As a Handler spends increased time with their consciousness projected into their robotic subjects, the more they become detached from humanity.

A Master Handler has spent decades diving into the electronic pathways of machines. Having to spend a few minutes conversing with another person is excruciating when one is used to simply thinking a command and have it be perfectly understood and followed. Master Handlers are often awkward and disdainful of other humans, which can unsettle those within their proximity. The elite human soldiers in the Foundation's SecDef division resent a Master Handler's lack of cohesion, despite the formidable abilities they bring to bear on the enemy. Master Handlers therefore refuse to serve embedded with any other Foundation unit, instead relying on custom built 'Defender' Drones to protect them. These modified Firefly drones have their clingfire payload replaced with state-of-the-art armour. Their vastly improved neural processors perform a 'swarm defense', continually scanning for potential threats, positioning themselves as a seemingly easy target, only to dart away once they have drawn enemy fire.

Master Handlers wear powerful machine-assisted armor normally reserved for elite SecDef forces, and wield an arsenal of weaponry that normal soldiers can only dream of. Some Master Handlers eschew additional weapons and instead utilize Neural Nodes: an incredibly expensive and controversial technology that combines a powerful machine neural processor with a tiny portion of the Master Handler's cognitive functions. The Neural Node acts as an independent, duplicated version of the Handler's consciousness for a brief moment, before safeguards purge its core memory. The Neural Node creates a powerful momentary electronic copy of the Master Handler's mind into the target drone, to assess the situation and provide the drones with a specific order. There are many voices both outside and within the Foundation that decry the use of Neural Nodes, claiming they are a form of A.I., which puts all of humanity at risk. The Foundation remains resolute that purging a Neural Nodes at regular intervals prevents any potential issues from arising. Master Handlers themselves ignore the controversy, relishing any opportunity to become closer to the robots under their control, to devastating effect amongst those that stand in their way.

As a brand new command model, you also get a new, different faction objective for the Epirians if you take this unit as the head of your detachment:

MASTER OF MACHINES
This objective may only be utilized if your force contains a Master Bot Handler. If utilized, a Master Bot Handler is automatically your force commander for any objective type that requires one.

This objective type can generate a maximum of 3 VPs per game, after which you may no longer utilize the Bot Mastery ability.

-----

Partial: (each end phase) If at least one of your Master Bot Handlers is on the table and the Bot Mastery ability was not utilized that turn, gain 1 VP.

Full: (end of game) If at least one of your Master Bot Handlers is still on the table, gain all of this objective’s remaining VPs.

Bot Mastery: Once per turn, you may automatically enable one of your unit’s bot protocols when that unit is activated (regardless of whether its activation discipline check is successfully passed). You must have at least one Master Bot Handler on the table to utilize this ability.

Check out the Maelstrom's Edge store today to pick up your Master Handler for just $8.49/£5.99!

In this case, it's more like playing space marines and not fielding scouts...

Secdef are Epirian, but they don't get along with Contractors and their drones particularly well, so it's quite thematic to go with just Secdef, if you're so inclined.

It seems they're independent but all the build up ones seem to link to the gloves.

Reading in the basic assembly guide article the stock meat arms have pegs the exo arms attach to. But as usual insaniak has done a modeling article with ideas and conversions, one of which is the exo arms as a third limb and another using spare meat arms from elsewhere in the ME range.

Edit: looked at the assembly guide again, arms use pegs not flat areas.

Yeah, the weapons are designed to peg onto the arms, but there's nothing physically that would stop you from trimming the pegs off the back of the forearms and having the weapon arms waving about independently.

I had something similar in mind for a 4-weapon version, but didn't get a chance to build that one yet.

The Forsaken are commonly dismissed as simple, degenerate pirates, but the truth is that they usually attack only out of necessity. Piracy is many times the only way their community can survive a hostile galaxy: stealing food, fuel, ammunition and anything else of value they can get their hands on. The Forsaken rarely send out their forces en masse, knowing that a single crushing defeat could mean the end of their entire tribe's existence. Instead, they strike in small patrols, typically led by a Chieftain.

Though a Chieftain is granted his or her position of authority by The Assembly, they must first earn the respect of their fellow Forsaken to even be nominated. A Chieftain must be equal parts fighter, diplomat and cunning tactician. Knowing that their forces can never win a stand-up fight against a prepared opponent, a Chieftain leads his warriors to strike unseen from the shadows, quickly fading away before the enemy can root them out and respond in kind. Many an opposing force has underestimated the ingenuity of a Broken force led by a Chieftain, only realizing too late their folly, as improvised booby traps decimate their defensive positions and Broken secretly approach from their rear.

The appearance of a Chieftain can vary wildly both based upon the culture of their original homeworld, but also from that of the Broken Freeport they are now a part of. Chieftains tend to have slightly nicer clothing and equipment than standard Broken rabble, and many see it as almost their duty to show that even amongst the ranks of the Broken, an individual can still rise up and carry themselves with dignity and class. When the Broken do manage to defeat an enemy officer with particularly fancy clothing or an heirloom weapon, a Chieftain will confiscate these valuable items. A Chieftain wears these purloined treasures into battle, as both a reminder of their past victory, and to display their status as an iconic Broken leader.

This high detail resin model contains two alternate weapons for the left hand and a xeno spotter in the right hand, and is available now from the webstore here! You can also find the rules for this model in the Force Builder section here.

We are very proud to announce the immediate availability of our latest plastics - the Epirian SecDef. These guys have exo-augmented armour, allowing them to be a much more powerful and effective fighting force than their contractor allies.

Available now at https://www.maelstromsedge.com/medge/store.jsp?p=41

This fully plastic kit allows you to build a squad of the Epirian's elite fighting force - the SecDef.

The elite of the Epirian Foundation is the Security and Defence force, or SecDef. The men and women of SecDef are better trained, better armed and better equipped than the Contractors that make up the majority of Epirian defences on frontier worlds. SecDef take only the very best recruits, typically recommended by a trustee after a number of years of dedicated service as a Contractor. Those promoted into SecDef spend over a year training at dedicated off-world bases on Foundation worlds throughout the Spiral Arm, where grizzled veteran instructors inflict a brutal schedule of combat, security and fitness drills. Many recruits wash out during this gruelling period of indoctrination, and only the best of the best become members of the SecDef's feared infantry squads. The Foundation likes to play up this robust selection and training system, because the SecDef are a source of both great pride and great profit. The SecDef are billed by their corporate owners as the ultimate in precision combat. Even one SecDef squad is a honed killing machine, clinical and effective. Rich companies and individuals alike across the galaxy look to hire SecDef infantry as the finest mercenary units, working as bodyguards, military escorts or even leading attacks on rival corporations or hostile alien worlds.

In the days before the Maelstrom, the Foundation was a loose affiliation of corporate franchises, competing on designs for robotics and terraforming technologies, and for the rights to mine asteroid belts and transform worlds for new colonies. However, the franchises recognised the need to keep their free market competition civil and productive, and the elected Foundation trustees maintained the trading rights and regulations between franchises, as well as mediating disputes and deciding on the overall direction of the Foundation. The SecDef acted as the enforcement arm of the overarching corporate structure, a hand-picked selection of the best soldiers from across the different franchises, trained up to be the best equipped and trained fighting unit in the corporate sector. Because of this need for independence for the franchises, the SecDef eschewed the use of robots, as these might preferentially benefit an individual franchise. In the time since the Maelstrom, communication, transportation and above all trust across the Spiral Arm has disintegrated, and the Foundation has fragmented into individual franchises, each with their own SecDef division. Despite now being in more direct competition, much of the tactics and philosophy of the original SecDef charter remains in the individual organisations.

The number of soldiers employed in SecDef varies from franchise to franchise, but is typically much lower than the number of Contractors and robotic units. Most franchises like their security and military forces to be represented by robots, acting as a sales tool for the consumer models of the robots seen on the battlefield. However, robots are only as effective as their Bot Handler. With armed conflicts erupting across the Spiral Arm due to the constant threat of the Maelstrom, Foundation forces more often find themselves having to make do with fewer and less well trained Bot Handlers. SecDef forces are therefore often kept in reserve and used to clean things up when the robotic and Contractor units get bogged down or can't overcome a tough enemy. This gives the SecDef of certain franchises a reputation for saving the day, which the trustees utilise to charge even higher rates when the SecDef perform 'consultancy' work for other organisations. Their tough reputation and intense lifestyle means that most SecDef soldiers are much better paid than Contractors or even some Bot Handlers, but they are so in demand that when the contract of a veteran SecDef expires they will often offer themselves up to opposing franchises for better rewards, or even go completely independent, leading to some of the most cut-throat and effective mercenary forces in the galaxy.

The SecDef's weapons and equipment are traditionally manufactured by Araldyne, one of the last great Epirian Foundation franchises. Araldyne were the franchise with operational control over the Foundation just before the Maelstrom hit. Ever since, Araldyne has maintained that they should rightfully be in control of the entire Foundation, and use both political pressure and military force to seize ships, technology or even planets from other franchises, insisting that they do so for the good of the Epirian Foundation as a whole. Their weaponry is more expensive and advanced than most used in the Foundation, prioritising advanced design and optimised technology over the mass-produced weaponry used by much of the Foundation's lesser troops. SecDef infantry are typically seen sporting powerful Araldyne AR60 assault rifles, as well as the heavier models in the Araldyne range such as the LM14 Machine Gun, SR40 Sniper Rifle and CG100 Chaingun. Such is the prevalence of Araldyne technology amongst the SecDef that rumours abound that Araldyne is secretly funding them as part of their goal to take over the Foundation. As a result, some of the more independent Foundation franchises such as the isolationists of Arkacorp refuse to accept Araldyine support for their SecDef, and even manufacture their own inferior copies of the Araldyne equipment. To their chagrin, despite these imitation weapons being more common across the Spiral Arm, they are still called 'Araldyne'-type weaponry, due to the obvious imitation of their competitor's designs.

Many of the higher-ups in the Foundation dislike that the elite forces of the SecDef are human-based, and there is pressure from some business units to disband SecDef and replace it with robotic divisions. The reality is that the human faces of the SecDef perform a function that robots cannot, and so there is a lot of pushback from Foundation military leaders whenever the commercial arm suggests a robotic replacement. This internal conflict gives the soldiers of the SecDef a huge chip on their shoulder, and pushes them not only excel at their jobs but also to resent Foundation robotic units. As a result, SecDef units refuse to include Foundation robots within their detachments, and never miss an opportunity to remind Bot Handlers and Contractors alike that the 'real soldiers' saved the day when they are deployed to reinforce their positions. SecDef soldiers gladly utilise all the other technological advances of the Foundation's foundries such as power-assisted armour, advanced maglock weaponry and targeting assistance, as long as there is always a human in direct control of the weapon or vehicle. They also refuse to be transported by drone craft, and arrive on the battlefield airlifted in stealth-armoured, human-piloted Hornet dropships. An aerial insertion by a SecDef squad or detachment can be the sharp stiletto that opens up a stalemate and turns the tide in the Foundation's favour.

A SecDef infantry squad is a well-drilled team of three to five elite soldiers, specialising in assaults on enemy space stations and secure facilities, as well as the defence of the Epirian Foundation's own high-value targets. A SecDef infantry squad will advance in synchronised cover formation, stepping individual squad members up to secure positions before allowing their team to advance. Their combat philosophy is to always keep moving, only staying in one location long enough to make an attack before shifting to a new position, constantly searching for a way to flank the enemy or find a weakness. They rarely deploy to fixed positions, and typically will be airdropped onto the precise location on the battlefield where they can make the most impact. The high-pitched scream of their Hornet dropships coming in for a combat drop is an ominous precursor to enemy combatants that in a few short seconds a SecDef squad will be on position to turn the tide of battle.

SecDef soldiers wear augmented power-assisted exoskeletons, with servo motors boosting the power of their arms and legs. As well as enabling antigrav aerial insertions from high altitude, the exoskeleton also allows them to wear thick ballistic armour without losing full mobility or movement. Their helmets are equipped with state-of-the art targeting and threat-identification heads-up displays, which when coupled with their years of advanced training and experience gives them an unparalleled instinct for tactical action on the battlefield. SecDef infantry sport the most advanced maglock weaponry produced by Araldyne Systems. The superior craftsmanship and state-of-the-art materials in an Araldyne AR60 assault rifle or G20 pistol makes it lighter to hold and more precise, with targeting optics linked into their helmets and a more expensive deadlier armour-piercing round made from rare earth metals. A squad can be supplemented with sniper or machine-gun armed specialists for specific combat roles, whilst the SecDef Annihilator team, armed with 2 Araldyne CG100 Chainguns, is capable of taking on even the most heavily emplaced fortifications. The combination of intense training, advanced exoskeletons and cutting-edge weaponry makes the SecDef the finest fighting forces in the Epirian Foundation - or for those with the resources to purchase their services.

There was a bit of miscommunication getting these guys listed in the store - the price is $14.49 for 6 models / 2 sprues, not $14.49 for 1 sprue (3 models)! The store has been updated and our apologies for any confusion!

Yeah there is effectively a 'standardised' head/ball joint size now between all spiral arm stuff, the majority of anvil industries stuff, a majority of puppetswar stuff, and a significant percentage of other ball joint head parts from GW (for the kits which are not monopose obviously!)

Ahhh, I hadn't thought about Anvil Industry! Yes, they would make for some really good swaps as well. It just depends whether the Maelstrom miniatures are more "true scale" (which it looks like they might be), and how big the Anvil heads are. If they're like GW ones, they might be a touch big.

If we can get a scale comparison from somebody as to the size of these dudes, that would help out immensely!

Following our first resin Forsaken Chieftain model, this month we have released a Tech Chieftain variant, along with an updated rules card adding the enhanced options found on this model.

This high detail monopose resin model comes with two different weapon options for the right hand - a customised slug rifle or a customised beam blastgun, and is available now from the webstore here! You can also find the updated rules for this model in the Force Builder section here, and a tactics article explaining how the new options work here

A reinforcement for the Epirian Foundation crawls into the online store this month, with the release of the Epirian Contractor Drone. Providing a more stable and reliable platform than human troops, Contractor Drones are used in Epirian forces to add heavy firepower or specialised tactical options to Contractor units.

The Contractor Drone changes the way Contractor units are structured. Instead of having a single Contractor Unit, we're introducing 4 different types of Contractor squads which are differentiated by the type of drone that accompanies them. This current Drone has parts to use it with the new Contractor Defender unit and Contractor Scout unit, with more drone variants and associated Contractor unit types to follow later on.

This resin kit is comprised of a Contractor Drone chassis, and optional parts to equip it with a Maglock Chaingun, linked Cluster Missile Pods or linked Flakk Guns, for inclusion in a Contractor Defender unit, or a Resupply Package to supplement a Contractor Scout unit. You can find it in the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

The rules cards for these units will be online very soon, but in the meantime, here's a look at the rules for the new units:

As you can see, the Contractor Defender unit basically replaces the existing Contractor unit type, with the optional addition of one or two heavy weapon drones. Note that this includes the option to equip the drones with Strike missiles, which aren't included in this release - there will be a conversion article for this option coming very soon!

The Scouts are the first new unit type, adding another Vanguard option to the Epirian line-up. With the new and planned units, you will soon have the ability to field an entire force of Contractors, although you can obviously still mix these new units with the existing bot units as well!

The new Contractor Drone is available now - You can find it in the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

The Broken receive a bit of a boost to their melee capabilities this month, with the release of the resin Hakoyu Grand Master - available now from the Maelstrom's Edge webstore!.

The Hakoyu Grand Master is an optional add-on for Broken Assault units. Equipped with powerful close combat weapons and defensive shields, he can help to defend the unit from incoming close quarter attacks while also possessing the fighting prowess to stand toe-to-toe with a Karist Shadow Walker!

With four arms and a horn-like protrusion from their foreheads, Hakoyu can seem menacing at first glance, especially as most have trained for decades in various martial arts and tend to carry at least one large melee weapon with them at all times, despite the fact that they are quite passive by nature. When a Hakoyu does feel forced to fight, their lightning quick reflexes and zealous training means they can usually end the contest before their opponent even knows what has happened.

The Hakoyu hail from the remote Yedo system. Their society is governed by a strict code of honour that can be difficult for non-Hakoyu to decipher. They believe the needs of the group are paramount, with the desires and wants of any individual considered trivial. This means Hakoyu prefer to live their lives in their home system, which makes them one of the more rare alien species in the Spiral Arm, with most humans never encountering a Hakoyu in their lifetime. All is not perfect on Yedo however, as the Hakoyu have been locked in a centuries-old war with their neighboring species, the Cera, over territorial rites and a perceived slight to the Hakoyu peoples' honor that cannot forgive. The war has steadily sapped the resources of Yedo, with the Cera using their technological advantages to blockade Yedo from receiving much needed relief supplies for its civilians. This dire situation has forced increasing numbers of Hakoyu to flee Yedo in an attempt to earn a living selling their services throughout the spiral arm, usually as a bodyguard or enforcer, even though such work is in direct conflict with their morale code and likely means they would not be welcomed back to Yedo should they ever wish to return.

When the Maelstrom threatens a world, misplaced distrust in Hakoyu sell-swords means they're often discarded at the last second by their former employers and denied a place on escape craft, leaving them ripe to join the ranks of the Broken. The Broken offer the Hakoyu a way out and a collective where most everyone is an outcast to some extent, in which many Hakoyu have found a second home even as they long to someday find their way back to Yedo. The Broken, on their part, value the Hakoyu's fighting skills and their unselfish character. The most sought after Hakoyu are their pinnacle warriors: a Grand Master, as they tend to give any squad the upper hand in any close quarter fighting. The calm demeanor of a Grand Master under fire is enough to convince their Broken squad mates to charge into the teeth of enemy fire rather than to run away. Grand Masters wield deadly Hakoyu phase weaponry, a technology first seen on Yedo and whose methods of construction are a closely guarded secret. These weapons pass effortlessly through energy fields and can cause electronic circuitry to explode upon contact, both highly sought after abilities in the Hakoyu's fight against the Cera. Hakoyu are also renown for their exquisite skill with forearm deflectors, and Grand Masters in particular are able to use these to prevent an opponent from ever striking them, no matter what type of deadly melee weapon they might face.

The Hakoyu Grand Master is available now - You can find it in the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

The unit card will be up in the Force Builder section of the Maelstrom's Edge website in the next couple of days - but here's a sneak peek!

There are some new models in the pipeline for the Epirians, yes. We'll be trying to keep releases staggered between factions, so nobody is left out for too long.

Riot control is handled by Suppression teams, although we'd like to get some riot shields added at some point.

This month sees the release of a new support unit for the Broken: Pa'ku Artillery, available now from the webstore here!

Behind the implacable visage of the Pa'ku resides a powerful, if often misunderstood intellect. Extremely logical creatures, when the Pa'ku are convinced a certain course of action will do more good than wrong, they will take lives without scruples if that is what it takes. Pa'ku artillery has been known to mercilessly bombard hospitals or civilian refugee groups when they have concluded that this was the most logical course of action. They do not make any decision lightly nor do they act carelessly. In fact, the Pa'ku sometimes drive their commanders crazy as they sit pondering the pros and cons of a proposed course of action and all the alternatives, and where the situation is particularly complex have been known to gather for private war councils with their own kind before they will consider responding to a call to arms. Despite their reputation for ruthlessness, when Pa'ku take lives it is because they believe there is no viable alternative. This does not however mean they are saints - all of a Pa'ku's deliberations are still ultimately guided by self-interest and a desire to survive the chaos of the Edge.

Despite their peculiarities, Pa'ku are especially desirable to the Broken. Their solid physiques make them extremely suited to carrying heavy loads, including the biggest artillery the Broken manage to cobble together. At close range, the Pa'ku can extend their very long tongue with enough force to cave in a man's skull. Pa'ku only speak to other species when necessary, and their language is difficult for most races to translate or speak. Combined with their large size, this generally results in them being overlooked by evacuation efforts, and so as with the even larger Gnolti, joining the Broken is often the only reasonable chance for a Pa'ku to escape the edge and find a new home.

Pa'ku are often found in the support lines of Broken forces with giant cannon and other esoteric weapons strapped to their broad shoulders. Linked with electronic targeting systems, these weapons can be slaved together to unleash devastating barrages of firepower onto enemy lines. Their favoured weapon is a multi-barrelled EMP mortar, which carpets the battlefield with explosive energy packets that can fry electronic systems and incinerate softer targets. You can find the rules for the Pa'ku Artillery unit in the Force Builder section of the Maelstrom's Edge website here.

This high detail, multi-part resin kit contains one Pa'ku armed with a Quad EMP Mortar, and is available now from the webstore here!

I don't have a bare resin pic yet, but the arms, left legs and weapon barrel section are separate pieces. The main part of the gun is moulded to his back. The MEdge resin cuts nicely, though, so if you wanted to remove the gun it would be easy enough to cut through the mounting with a razor saw or the like.

This week sees the release of some new, fast-moving reinforcements for the Epirian SecDef - the Rapid Intervention Team!

SecDef forces excel at rapid insertions and mobile strikes against enemy positions. Sometimes though, even these elite troops run up against opposition that is too well entrenched for a normal assault. Against these targets, boostpack-equipped Rapid Intervention Teams are brought to bear. Selected from amongst the most skilled SecDef veterans and armed with twin Araldyne CB22 Assault Carbines, Rapid Intervention Teams use the greater mobility afforded by their boostpacks to outflank and surprise enemy defenses, quickly overwhelming them with a hail of deadly short-ranged firepower. Where an extra punch is required, Rapid Intervention Teams are equipped with Araldyne CF13 Clingfire Sprayers or FG19 Flakk Guns: more effective and streamlined versions of these ubiquitous weapons, typical of the improvements Araldyne is able to create.

-Click here for the full rules card-

While undeniably effective, many commanders on the Edge are reluctant to deploy Rapid Intervention Teams other than as a last resort, due to the extreme costs involved in training, equipping and maintaining them. Not only are their compact boostpacks incredibly expensive and notoriously difficult to keep operational, the extensive training required to master them makes a fully trained Boostpack Infantryman almost as valuable as their equipment. On more affluent worlds this is less of a concern, and Rapid Intervention Teams are often found spearheading engagements, striking at critical targets behind enemy lines and crippling the foe's ability to properly organize a defense against the might of a full SecDef deployment.

This high quality resin kit contains three Epirian SecDef Boostpack Infantry models armed with twin Araldyne CB22 Assault Carbines and Clingfire Grenades, and three 25mm plastic bases, and is available now from the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

Echoing the praise on those helmets.

Very cool looking.

I'm a bit torn on the jetpacks. I feel conditioned to have them huge and bulky, but I like their sleekness and compact size as well.

I'm sure I'll be grabbing some of these guys down the line.

The body and head is one piece, with separate boostpack and arms. You could make 'in-flight' poses fairly easily with a couple of foot swaps. I already have that on my conversion list for the obligatory modeling ideas article

Love the dual wielding

Given the response to the helmets that might be shirking to consider as an accessory at some point (like a little resin sprue of 10 heads).

Really looking forward to adding these to my growing little force of SecDef. Haven't decided if I'll paint them as part of my Epirian force or as a separate army.

A collection of resin heads is on our wishlist (as are many other things!)

Some very exciting things in the pipeline for the next year too

The ME models just get better and better. (Helmet visor paint guide required please!)

One question before I order....
Do the SecDef jump troopers come with the alternate weapons listed on the stat card? The blurb in the store seems to indicate they don't.

No, these guys just come with the carbines. There will be a separate release early in the new year with two models with special weapons.

It's been a huge year for Maelstrom's Edge! As 2018 draws to a close, we thought it would be fun to take a moment to have a look back at what we have achieved over the last year.

Our biggest focus for this year has been to expand the model range, to give players more options for their games. We rolled this out with regular model releases in either plastic or resin.

As the new kids on the block, the Broken received the lion's share of new models, with a slew of non-Core options to expand the force. These included two Chieftain variants - a Forsaken Chieftain with a Xeno spotter, and a Tech Chieftain variant with bionics and custom weapons, a Sig Jammer to mess with an opponent's technological capabilities, the ever-impressive Gnolti, our largest model to date, and the quad-mortar-carrying Pa'ku.

We also introduced a new category of unit to the game, with two 'Add-on' unit options joining the Broken ranks. The Marsayan Hypnotist and Hakoyu Grand Master can replace a normal squad member in regular Broken infantry units, adding different capabilities and tactical options to the unit.

The Epirian Foundation also received some reinforcements, with a resin Contractor Drone added to the mix, changing up how Contractor units are formed. The original Contractor unit was replaced with Contractor Defender and Contractor Scout units, with new battefield roles defined by the drones that accompany them.

A new Command option also joined the fray, with the release of the plastic Master Bot Handler kit. This fantastic kit allows you to build a mech-suit enhanced commander with a wide array of different weapon configurations, and accompanied the release of a new sub-faction for the Foundation: The SecDef.

The SecDef are the elite troops of the Epirian Foundation, and take to the field with the best weapons and equipment money can buy. We kicked off this range with another plastic kit, SecDef Infantry, used to build SecDef Tactical Teams, and have added to this with our latest release, in the form of resin Boostpack Infantry for SecDef Rapid Intervention Teams.

Through the Comm Guild blog, we continued to release weekly modeling articles, covering a wide range of different hobby-related topics including painting techniques, conversion ideas and tutorials or spotlights on different terrain projects. There are too many to list them all here, but you can find them all in the Hobby section of the Maelstrom's Edge website.

There have also been some big changes to the Maelstrom's Edge website over the last few months, with the addition of more content and some rearranging to make things easier to find. We also added printable PDF versions of all of our rules cards in the Rules section, to supplement the online-viewable cards in the Force List viewer.

SO where to next?

We will be continuing with our regular release schedule, with new models coming over the next few months for the Epirian Foundation and the Karist Enclave. The usual onslaught of modeling content will continue through the Comm Guild, and we'll be looking to add more gaming material as well in the form of battle reports and tactics articles.

We will be attending Salute in April, so the start of the year will also be busy getting models ready, and all going well, we'll have a couple of big previews to show off over the Salute weekend...

Our thanks to everyone who has supported us through the past year. We're looking forward to sharing new and shiny things with you in the year to come!

The broken were sculpted to be relatively androgynous builds with all of the layers, and there are a couple of female heads on the sprues. One of the two resin Chieftain models is also female, although, again, hard to tell under the layers.

The basic troops for the Epirians and Karists are all male for the same reason that most plastic troop kits in this industry are male: it makes the parts more interchangeable. But there are plans to do female versions of all of the basic troops when we get a chance.

This week sees the addition of some heavier firepower to SecDef Rapid Intervention Teams, with the release of SecDef Boostpack Specialists!

This pack contains two specialists, and three pairs of weapons - twin Araldyne CB22 Assault Carbines, twin Araldyne CF13 Clingfire Sprayers and twin Araldyne FG19 Flakk Guns, allowing you to add them to the Boostpack Infantry pack to field a full SecDef Rapid Intevention Team of five models with one or two special weapons options.

-Click here for the full rules card-

This high quality resin kit contains is available now from the Maelstrom's Edge webstore here!

Close - the Suppression team and Praetorians use the plastic Faction Expansion sprue combined with the plastic trooper and contractor kits, and the Suppression team is boxed with a bot.

The angel was indeed a conversion from a modeling article a while back - I had a few of my assorted conversions on display with the studio models this time around.

The new big bot is very Pacific Rim looking, which is no bad thing.

The other scruffy one standing up in this picture, if i'm not mistaken, is Legoburner. Although I could well be mistaken. I've only ever seen one picture of him and that was a good while ago.

Spiral Arm Studios are thrilled to present our latest plastic kit: The Remnant Militus Battlesuit! This is the first kit for the Artarian Remnant, the newest faction to join the fray at the Maelstrom's Edge.

Lorican Combat Suits are the pinnacle of Artarian engineering, allowing a House Champion to have the utility and fighting prowess of many soldiers or workers. Each suit wearer is virtually a one man army, equipped with light but incredibly strong alloyed armour plating that is adapted from the same technology that is used in Remnant ship hull plating. It can absorb heat based weapons and even use it to recharge the suit's systems. The armour is quite capable of deflecting even heavy calibre ammunition, and is fully adapted to work in vacuum or underwater.

Each suit is assisted by sophisticated motion predicting micro-servo motors to give them unparalleled strength and mobility, moving with ease through dense terrain and being able to punch holes through conventional armour. Every suit also boasts a wealth of sensors including friend or foe recognition, communications frequencies, target acquisition and capability calculation, capable of identifying weak points on the target and providing suggestions as to what weapon to attack it with. All suits are slaved with targeting and intelligence information from the insertion ships in orbit, providing a strategic overview, co-ordination between strike teams and immunity to ambush.

The suits are powered by a miniature tritium energy cell, and are good for several months without recharging. This powers all suit subsystems including medical diagnostic systems which will seal over wounds including resorting to removal of limbs if necessary, and supply painkillers, stimulants and medication as required. The armour will also recycle bodily waste and their occupants can survive for weeks without resupply, although the experience would not be particularly pleasant.

The standard 'Militus' class suit forms the core of most Artarian fire teams. They can be equipped with a range of different, high-powered weapon options and are also often fitted with protective field generators or jump packs for extra mobilty.

This kit contains a single, mulitpart Militus suit on one plastic sprue, along with a 45mm plastic base.

To get you building, you can find assembly instructions in PDF format here.

The Militus kit is available now from the Maelstrom's Edge webstore. Faction rules are still being finalised, as the other models for the Remnant are still being developed, but will be added to the website as soon as they are ready to go!

Mother of God.

I just found the new model for my Glitterboy when playing Savage Worlds: Rifts.

Is the theory that these guys can be an army all on their own, where all you field is a fireteam of 4-6 suits while your opponent fields whole units of troops and drones? That would be awesome, like a mini version of a force of Knights from 40k.

Even if for just using them as such a thing in other skirmish games (either as 28mm battlesuits or giant mecha in smaller scale games), I could see myself getting several of these guys as they can all be unique, and they are dirt cheap for what you get.

The best part is that it looks really easy to magnetize at least the gun mount connections. Just a guy with both arms being open fists could have a shoulder mount that you could swap every gun onto.

$12.99 for that ????? Thats like over $1 per head, oh you mean there's an entire model with those extra heads, well ok then...Fingers crossed there's a few more Remnant troops not too far behind that match the bar that's been set.

12 heads...

Fully posible legs and arms?

And an Zentrati Escort Fleet worth of additional guns.

OK, I think I found my summer project.

That's it exactly, yes. Exact force size is yet to be confirmed, as we're still finalising the rules across the faction, but all three suit types will run as single-model units, with probably 6-10 models making up a force.

The best part is that it looks really easy to magnetize at least the gun mount connections. Just a guy with both arms being open fists could have a shoulder mount that you could swap every gun onto.

They don't really even need magnets. The pivot mount that the weapons fit onto is a really snug fit, so you can get away with just pushing them into place.

Thanks to Salute, we actually managed to get almost all of the Spiral Arm Studios gang together in the same timezone for a while! So we're taking advantage of this to get in some brainstorming and playtesting for ideas for Maelstrom's Edge V2. Exciting times!

I hadn't been following this much, but these guys look awesome, exactly what I have been looking for in a Sci Fi faction. Really good job on the plastics.

Cool! I just picked up the starter set so I hope there will be affordable ways to get the v2 rules when they are finished.

We'll likely be going with a separate book release rather than another starter set, and there will also likely be a digital version as there is now. Nothing is confirmed just yet though, as it's still early days.

So power armor size guys as the scouts and maybe a big guy for heavy firepower ? Or am I misremembering the short story ?

No, that's pretty much it. The very early fluff for these guys had them as more like a Space Marine-esque power armoured, special ops force, but they wound up merging with some other ideas to have the three core suit classes - Stryker, which is a scout suit and basically just a set of light, powered armour, the mainline Militus, and the bigger, heavy support Brutus suit.

I see you guys are using proper dice!

And before I forget again, not having read any fluff on the new Maelstrom faction (is there a place I can read up on them?), but are they having a hard time surviving? Because looking at those ace minis again I can see mismatched pieces of armour colour-wise, as if they've been pulling their suits together from other remnants.

Or is that just their sense of battlefield fashion showing?

There is a little bit of background up on the MEdge website, both on the store page for the Militus and in the 'Explore the Edge' section on the faction page. I do need to do an article on Lorican Fashion (I'll put that on the top of the list for when I get home!) but basically within each Remnant fleet are a number of Houses - some houses are spread around multiple fleets, some a smaller and will only be found on one or two fleets.

Each House will have a general colour scheme that denotes that House, but then within that each Fire Team will have coloured markings that are shared across the team, and then individual Champion markings that are specific to that champion. So on our studio guys, the bronze is the House colour, the red shoulder pads and chest stripe denote the Fire Team, and the white markings identify each Champion.

Each team and house will have their own ways of using their chosen colours, and some houses will stick more rigidly to it than others. Some houses will have more uniform, militaristic schemes, and others will just allow Champions to paint their suits however they please, leading to more of a riotous, 'crusading knights' sort of look.

How many Militus would be a fair number to match up against either faction in the starter box?

We are still testing the exact points values, and there are two other types of suits in the pipeline, but roughly 5-6 suits would be the equivalent of a standard 120pt force, which is roughly what you get in the box set for each side. Just like the Broken are a big difference in terms of having many models, the Remnant are at the other extreme! They are a lot of fun to build and play.

Hopefully everything works out for them! I really like it when games are not afraid of having asymetrical forces rather than having every faction have roughly the same type of options.

Just wondering whether I need to bump it up the too buy list or not.

It should be available for the next 12 months (ish) but will go away once V2 is released. The aim is to replace it with a bigger, hardcover rulebook and separate faction starter boxes.

Awesome!

Although this might not have been decided, but are faction details going to be in the book? Or are we going to have to print downloads for the factions? I'd love to have all the info in a single place - at least until more new things are released.

The new book will include all of the existing (at time of print) factions, although we'll likely also continue to offer the separate 'Faction Books' for download, so that they can be updated with subsequent model releases.

Some light reading - A new battle report is now up on the Comm Guild blog!

Tempest Elites with Ravager Vulcan pulse cannons and a Coriolis launcher deployed in rough terrain

No one saw them coming: the warriors in their smooth armoured plating, accompanied by the beautiful yet horrible Angels. They took the abandoned and dilapidated production facility at Argos, killing the few patrolling Contractors without mercy. A hastily assembled Epirian contingent, including a powerful Hunter Warmech and a squad of elite SecDef, arrived on the scene the next day to root out the zealot strike force. These Maelstrom-worshipping crackpots were about to pay dearly for their boldness.

This game sees an Epirian force commanded by Iain take to the field against a Karist incursion led by Jon. The mission is Groundfall, which has the Alpha Strike and Territories objectives. Points are gained by destroying enemy units and by capturing the 5 territory markers scattered across the board. Deployment was determined to be in opposing L-shapes: Karist bottom right, Epirian top left. The Karists have easy access to 3 of the 5 territory markers. Uphill battle for the Epirian side?

You can find the full report here!

This month, we're revisiting the Epirian SecDef, with the addition of a new SecDef Lieutenant! This high quality resin kit contains one Epirian SecDef Lieutenant model with two weapon options (CB22 Assault Carbine and G20 Pistol) and a 25mm base, and is available now from the Maelstrom's Edge online store here. The SecDef Lieutenant is a Command model, and lets you field a force comprised entirely of SecDef units!

Anyone underestimating a SecDef lieutenant is about to pay dearly for his mistake. Promoted from amongst the most capable veteran sergeants, SecDef lieutenants are level-headed combat experts on both a tactical and strategic level with extensive financial and material resources to hand. Often taking on the most difficult (and therefore highest paying) missions with their platoons, the aim of most lieutenants is to accrue enough backpay to purchase a field commander commission, and the heavy combat rig that goes with that position.

While technically tasked with safeguarding the same corporate goals as every other Epirian division, issues can arise when SecDef units are forced to cooperate with Bot Handler commanders in the field. Their philosophy, character and approach are almost diametrically opposed to that of the average Handler. The SecDef's innate distaste for bots results in them having little faith in the abilities of their robotic allies, having seen them fail once too many in their long careers where they believe proper SecDef infantry would have got the job done. Nevertheless, they are professional enough to let the deadly Hunter Warmechs profit from their shoulder-mounted target designator. Many a foe has perished under a hail of strike missiles shortly after a SecDef lieutenant is inserted into enemy lines, quickly identifying and painting the largest threat.

The Epirian SecDef receives another reinforcement this month, with the addition of a new SecDef Medic! This high quality resin kit contains one Epirian SecDef Medic model with a CB22 Assault Carbine and field diagnostic unit, and a 25mm base. This is an add-on model for SecDef Tactical Teams.

SecDef Medics are combat veterans who have received additional training and equipment to administer first aid in the field. Known for being level-headed under fire, medics accompany SecDef tactical teams in the field, where they need to be equally competent at using their carbines or treating wounded squadmates.

Equipped with an advanced diagnostics and treatment device and requiring weeks of additional training, medics represent a not-insubstantial investment for SecDef Commanders. While most still attribute significant cost savings to a medic's ability to save the lives of expensive SecDef troopers, the return on investment tends to be carefully monitored by SecDef administration. It's not uncommon for units to be refused additional medics where higher-than-normal attrition rates suggest that high recruitment costs would not be sufficiently reduced by the presence of medical personnel.

Honestly, the mini seems a bit boring. Depending on the cost of him, I'm not sure why I would buy him instead of some plastic dues to bling out with pouches.

Which reminds me that I need to buy some more plastic dudes next time I have some hobby funds.
