Post by: Fango

Welcome my friends, to the 24th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition!

Pimpin' Aint Easy

Ok, so before anyone gets all up in arms over the slightly non-PC contest title, were talking about the informal verb here, not the world's second oldest profession....

pimp
/pimp/

verb
1. act as a pimp.
2.
informal
make (something) more showy or impressive.
"he pimped up the car with spoilers and twin-spoke 18-inch alloys"

The name of the game is (still!) terrain building.
The League's aim is to encourage our fellow gamers/model-makers to kick it up a notch while building terrain for their tabletop, be it for wargames, board games or dioramas. We encourage participants to use this thread to trade ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback. Everyone is a winner in a League competition. Because, in the end, your entry is also your prize (and it's just what you wanted, we're good like that) However the Winneriest (Winnermost? most Winsom?) will ascend to Leagedom, pick the topic for the next round and be judge, jury and riveter.

If you haven't taken part before, check out the rules and previous rounds. (linked below.)

Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to the your terrain project, to compete with other modellers for that most prestigious of prizes, membership into The League of Extraordinary Riveters [LoER].

The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of skill, experience, ability, etc.
The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...

For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back!

Contest #1 "Lids" (dsteingass)
Contest #2 "Cookie Package” (Viktor Von Doom)

Contest # 23 "Child's Play" (Z-Ray)

We now return to our scheduled program...

In honor of the father of the LoER Terrain Contest (dsteingass), whose terrain projects have inspired me to always improve my craft...and just in time for the new Necromunda release...this round's theme is "Pimpin' Aint Easy".

Ok, so you all have a favorite game board or bit of printed card scenery that has inspired you to build it in the glorious, rivet-covered Third Dimension at one point or another, am i right? (if not, start going through your card scenery and board games to getting inspired!)
This is similar in spirit to the "Pimp my Boardgame" contest that runs over on Boardgamegeek.com, which was inspired by the popular culture oddity "Pimp My Ride".
Your task is to model something that is printed on (or is inspired by) a board game board, or piece of card scenery (think 1995 Necromunda or other similar scenery that has 2D art that is meant to look like 3D texture or terrain).
This could be as simple as 2 or 3 Settlers of Catan tiles, or a small room from Warhammer Quest or Descent, to as complex and involved as a tile from Deathwatch: Overkill, or even a full board game board. (Check out dsteingass' project blog for examples of what I'm talking about)
Alternatively, instead of 3D-ifying a piece of 2D game art (I'll be honest, that's really what I want to see the most), you could create some sort of terrain feature that shows off something that has been 'blinged' or 'pimped'. This could be a wrecked buggy that has been embellished with decorations (think Mad Max), an open market stall that has been covered with colorful bangles and exotic wares to attract the most potential customers, or an underhive night-club with garish neon signs and flashing lights.
Your work can be in any scale, for any system/purpose. All terrain is equal in the eyes of the League (...except of course for the specific purpose of judging competitions...)

Please post as many WIP shots as you can (starting with your raw materials if possible) We all like to see how others work (and perhaps we can learn a few things from each other along the way) Regular posts in this thread at the top of the page allowing more people to find this contest. (This of course means you'll have more competition but it will just be that much sweeter when you eventually win and in front of a bigger audience too) Posting WIP shots, allows others to give feedback, share Ideas and engage in banter (a little trash talk is encouraged to help motivate the participants, but keep it civil and clean).

IMPORTANT!
while I want to see plenty of WIP pics, don't post your finished project here. We want to save that for the big reveal and people's choice vote.
When you are finished, PM me your pics for consideration by our expert judges: Myself and (Insert volunteer judge names here - former winners and LoER members please PM me if you'd like to help out?)

Speaking of Pics, Good photos win competitions, we can't judge what we can't see. And if you incorporate any lights, sounds or moving parts send a video so we can all bask in the warm glow of your mad modelling skills.

Rules:
1: Talk about fight cl...er...I mean...the Competition.
2: Talk about the Competition! Tell everyone. Post it in your blogs. Add the banner to your signature.
HTML code for the banner.....
{url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/744197.page#9690508]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

3: Must be completed by the deadline.
And when I say "must", I mean "around then". I hardly know what I'm going to do this weekend let alone in two months time and I hold all of you to the same lax standards as myself.
The Deadline is midnight on the 14th January 2018
My local time is PST/UTC-8 ( check it here for accuracy: California Time )
But anything sent on your local 14th of January will be accepted, I understand that some of us are a bit slower and tend to wait until the last miunute. (Ehem...me..)

4: Your piece should be scratch-built or heavily converted. Model kit parts can be used, especially if used in an unusual way, but you will get more points for something you sculpt yourself, so keep that in mind. Unconventional parts are highly recommended in addition to those you will be using as part of this competition.

5: Your model should be a piece of terrain or a diorama that can be used for gaming purposes. It cannot be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

6: Any scale, any setting and any board game or gaming system are welcome. A nice mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, historical, or modern will make this contest all the more interesting. If you don't play a game, that's fine too; just make a display piece, but keep rule 4 in mind.

7: The women are right, size doesn't matter. You can make as small or as large a model as you want. Bear in mind the time-scale and don't bite off more than you can chew. We've all made that mistake!

8: Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, etc. As said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can. Idealy your PM will include Photos, a description of what materials went into your entry and any specific techniques used, feel free to include some fluff/background/context to help everyone fully grasp your terrain genius.

9: AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use LEDs? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this. This is very important, Another words it might not be the BEST model that wins, but the one that has shown themselves to have pushed that envelope.

10: Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).

11: Sprue. Find a use for the often discarded wonder material and bonus points will be yours.

12. Small bonus for being small, I have repeatedly seen amazing large pieces being made, and am guilty myself of such, however so many fall by the way side because the thing grows arms and legs and runs away with time. So a small bonus will be awarded to those who can give me a piece on a CD or less. This is not a hard and fast rule. See Rule #6 for size matters.

13. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.

If you are unsure of anything just ask away.

Judging will be an Archaic formula of my own devising with bonuses for; creativity, coolness of concept, attention to detail (does it look like the art? Does it stick to the theme?)clever use of components/materials, the Judge's gut feeling and public voting.
Push yourself, folks. Go the extra mile.

Prizes:
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognized as a modeller devoted to Rivets.
Warm feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love your work. Also, to boost excitement and have a little bit more of a carrot to inspire people to finish and do their best work, I'd like to offer an actual prize to the judges' choice and the peoples' choice, haven't figured out what that is yet, but most likely a bit of custom built scatter terrain....open to suggestions!

Judges: Me and (Insert volunteer judge names here - former winners and LoER members please PM me if you'd like to help out?) for the main prize. For the People's Choice award - potentially EVERYONE ON DAKKA (no pressure)

Even if you are not entering, feel free to comment and offer up ideas, they really boost the community.

I think that's everything. LoER veterans, let me know if I missed any details.

That's it, people! Now quit reading this and go make some terrain!

Sweet! New comp! (not that I've been checking 5 times a day or anything)

I'm in, it's like the theme is tailor made for me, I'm already working on two projects that fit the theme...which to choose?
...
it has to be the one actually mentioned in the opening post. Nu-Cromunda!

I just know I'm going to keep trying to move and shoot through the 2D walls on the new necromunda tiles, so obviously I need 3D walls.
...Give me a second...

There you go, prototype (half painted Ork for scale)

...so how many of these will I need?...

...a lot...

first tiles worth of blanks (and proof of concept for corner pieces)

parts breakdown.

Dunno if I'm in, but I'm certainly thinking about it. Kernel of an idea, certainly.

How fortuitous that Necromunda has been re-released... Time to break out my 90s terrain for some inspiration (and maybe the odd game or two). Not saying i'm 'in', but we'll see.........

I'm In!
I love the idea of making a good looking 3D piece based off of an old card piece from a boardgame.

I've really enjoyed reading dsteingass' blog on necromunda terrain, in the past

Btw...is there any source material out there of old necromunda terrain pieces that could help those of us who don't own any original game stuff? To work from those then as to simply make up something on your own?

Welcome guys!

@Vik - Im not sure if I should be posting copyright material on the forums, but I bet they arent too difficult to find on the interwebz. I would start at Yaktribe, and if you don't have any luck there, there are several Necromunda facebook groups that you might have better luck with. Same goes for other GW classics like Space Crusade, Warhammer Quest and the like.

I'm planning on good old Hero Quest.

I saw in the description about 2-3 Settlers of Catan tiles, or a room from Warhammer Quest. Would I be able to remake a collection of the furniture from Hero Quest? Or should I stick more or less to a single piece?

I'm in,and like Z-Ray I was jonesing pretty hard for this. Already have an idea and major respect for the Xhibit meme!

I actually have two ideas so far, one is standard okry(well gretchiny) because what can't you do with those, and another is Sisters of Battle style, but then I'll need to buy sisters of battle stuff... it was probably inevitable I'd start another army before the end of the year...

I did love the heroquest stuff. I've made a point to incorporate bits from the trashed childhood game in my adult hobby....

The alter on the back of my titan:

The sarcophagus I put on the front my first dread - scratch built with plenty of cardboard and hot glue.

Not sure what I would do for this. 3-D zombicide would be pretty cool.

Or I could 3-D the Overkill tiles. They seems to available for $10 shipped on ebay.

Fango, that's sweet that your ruler has the inches and mm starting at the same place and going in the same direction. Really useful for sharing measurements in this multinational community of Dakka.

I thought it might come in handy....I do all of my measuring in inches, but I know most of the rest of the world uses metric. I hope it helps!

Here's the original furniture I have for Hero Quest:

I think the bookcases and fireplace will benefit most from being turned 3D.

I decided to start with the sorcerer's table, even though it is mostly 3D already. I just wanted to try making the tome/book.

The glue is still wet, making it hard to see details, but this is my progress so far.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing on their terrain projects...were coming into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend here in the States, so I’m hoping some of you get a chance to spend a little bit more time on them...assuming you are getting some time off of work.

@Syro_ - excellent start! I can’t wait to see how that book turns out! I dug out my old copy of Hero Quest this past weekend and played it with my youngest daughter. It was great fun.

It begins....

I dunno what begins, but it's beginning anyway....

I have been thinking about this use of all the extra hundreds of square bases I have left over from the Ao'S#() debacle and came up with the above. Now to decide how I want to fill them precisely. Originally it was going to be a water area, like an extended fountain or some such but I may be going with another idea here. We'll have to see. No plan survives contact with the enemy.

Thanks Fango, that's awesome that you got to play Hero Quest with your daughter, it's been too long since I've gotten to play. Now that Thanksgiving is over, I'm hoping to devote a large section of the next three days to this comp, and other 40k projects.

Thanks Fango, unfortunately I haven't felt well the entire break, so very little progress. I did make two more books, trying out different ideas for the book on the sorcerer table. They took longer than they look like they should have

I have them arranged from left to right in the order I started them. I think the middle one looks best.

I also made a mold of the side of the hero quest treasure chest, and made some sides to build from. I'm planning to sculpt the third completely.

Sorry if they pics aren't great, i took them with my phone since my cameras are out of batteries.

I did some work on the treasure chests, and made a long piece of wood to cut up and make a treasure chest from. I'm really happy with how the wood grain came out.
(I had trouble getting both pieces to show clearly in one pic, sorry).

@Syro_ - The treasure chests are looking great!

@Z-Ray - Look at all of those wonderful Rivets! Looking good!

I'm getting ready to dive in to a terrain project that fits this theme to help keep this contest near the top of the thread list...and hopefully to provide some more inspiration!

I am a little torn at the moment though, I have a Necromunda building in-progress (based off of one of the old card buidlings) but its a building that dsteingass has already done in his plog....and I'm also really in love with the Shadespire game-board art and feel inspired to re-create one of them in 3D.

Which would you guys like to see me work on?

I think game board stuff, actually. Though I say that in my capacity as a LOER member, not as judge
Cardstock game pieces are also viable as part and parcel. So, for instance, here's a 3-D version of a scenic element from Mansions of Madness:

Keep riveting, team!

@ Z-Ray: Thanks. I have a soft spot for Hero Quest for the same reason Yours is looking like it will be very cool, and useful when you're done. I especially like the drain.

@Fango: Thanks! I really appreciate the encouragement. I've done a bit more work on them. Been very busy and tired from my job.

The treasure chests in the upper left are from Super Dungeon Explore. I've been looking at them to see different styles of treasure chest. I sculpted more wood texture (very bottom is the new one) and the beginnings of the top of the treasure chest that I'm trying to make completely from scratch (right above it).

OK, decided to have a go at this for the first time, let's see what happens...

I started out with some templates based on the old Necromunda stuff as well. Wanted to get the sense of shape and scale to start with, but where it goes from there will be quite different! It'll be used in Nucromunda when I get it, and probably in an Inq28 game after Christmas as well.

Not got too much experience of this so any criticism welcome. Cheers!

Welcome Apollinaire! Looking good so far. I recognize those shapes. It looks like you are using corrugated cardboard for some of the parts. While it can offer a bit more structure/support, it tends to show the ribbed texture and any creases or damage that was done to the box before cutting it up can be hard to cover up in the final product. I would recommend using cereal or cracker box card, like you did for the larger piece in the bottom right of your photo. and maybe even double or triple the thickness with layers to get your rigidity...overall, I think you'll be happy with the finished surface. Alternatively, you could use styrene sheet if you want the rigidity while having a thinner material (though it is a little more pricey than recycled cardboard).

@Syro_ - Looking good, I'm loving all of the progress updates!

@Graven - Thanks for sharing that. Is it one of your own creations? I have Mansions of Madness 2nd edition, so I may have to dig my copy out for some more inspiration.

@All - So, would you all like to see me work on a Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire board? Or a Necromunda tower platform?

Thanks for the welcome and the advice, Fango. Had a day off work today so made a bit of progress and did some experimenting, but still a long way to go. I'll post some WIP pics when I get a bit further along.
Really enjoying all the bits and pieces posted on this thread so far, great work guys!

Thanks Fango, I try to update as often as I can in the hopes that I can help keep this contest thread on the first page of the Painting and Modeling section. That way more people are likely to see it and get interested in joining
That shadespire board also sounds interesting to me.

@Boundless, Guildenstern, and Apollinare, I'm looking forward to seeing your stuff.

I worked a little more on the treasure chests, built the second chest in two pieces in case I want to try to figure out how to make it open with a functioning hinge. I also made what will be the metal bands on the lid of my completely hand sculpted treasure chest.

@Syro_ - nice progress, keep em coming!

@Apollinaire - Awesome, cant wait to see your progress. Keep at it, practice definitely makes major improvements at the very least, if not perfect!

@Z-Ray, Graven, and Syro_ - Underworlds: Shadespire board it is!

@Maddok_Death - Yes! You can do Candy Land, if your want. In fact, that would actually be really cool to see!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, I've narrowed it down to one of these two boards (my favorite of the four options). I've toyed with the idea of making a 3D version that is usable with Shadespire...but really, in the end I'd be destroying all of the lovely hard work I did by drawing or carving hexes on to it. Then I thought of just making 3D bits that sat only in the impassible terrain hexes...and while this would make the game slightly cooler to look at, the hexes don't line up all that well with the terrain elements, and I'm stuck with some awkward looking terrain bits as the hex edges slice through the pillars, walls, statues, blocks, etc. I've also thought about making 3D versions of the objectives, but the figures wouldn't be able to stand on them very well, so ultimately I've decided the best way to play Shadespire is on the beautiful 2D boards with 2D objectives.

TLDR: I've decided to attempt a faithful reproduction of one of the two boards below to use as terrain in a Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Shadespire themed battle board.

What do you all think?

@Apollinaire, Already great texture and variety where the models will be moving around. Keep it up!

So much for the regular progress updates I was trying for, I've bene so busy and exhausted from work, I don't think I've worked on my entry for around a week. I finally did a little bit tonight.

With some research, I feel like the Hero Quest tables, look a great deal like trestle tables. I found this with an image search and have used it as my main piece of inspiration.

I sculpted what will be the side pieces/legs of the tables. It's still wet in this pic, but hopefully when it dries and I clean it up, it will look great.

@ Fango
You could try smashing up a CD case.

Randomly daubed with diluted blue, green and purple washes, then gloss varnished could give an interesting effect.

i'd probably also use some artists gloss gel medium (dries clear)
to make the flat surfaces a little more uneven and maby even some clear glitter paint or artist's iridescent medium to give some shimmer too. but that would need some experimenting with.

BLUE!

I ran out of paint 2/3 of the way through, will have to hit up the hobby shop tomorow for some more.

why blue? I like to think the original builders cared about the mental well being of the inhabitants and went with a cheerful sky blue colour scheme...and then I'll layer on 10,000 years of filth and grimdark over the top

Great progress all! Gah, I've let the thread drop to the second page!

How is everyone doing on time? It looks like we've got about 3 weeks until the deadline....and seeing as how busy I got over the last week or so (and will be with family stuff over the holidays), I'm sure time is flying by. I am open to moving the deadline if that is the consensus...

I've realized my Shadespire terrain project was a bit ambitious, given 1) how busy I am 2) that I have yet to play a single game of Age of Sigmar, and 3) We're ramping up to do a local Necromunda campaign....I should dedicate my terrain building time to Necrumunda themed terrain. So, my next update will be some scratch-built, plasticard terrain based on one of the old 1995 cardstock+bulkead buildings.

Good luck, stay calm and Rivet on! Keep those updates coming!!!

@Fango that tower looks great! Did you just score that plasticard? Whatever, those lines need to be glowing. A proper wizards(dominus') tower glowing with the power of magic(the one true omnissiah)! Amazing.

In my few days to my myself, I've managed to discern what I deem worthy of this competition and have henceforth constructed suchwise. There is an end goal I see in my head. I hope it to come to full fruition after a swift break for obligatory family gatherings.

@ Camkierhi: Hey Cam, the deadline is Feb. 1st, so not much time, but it would be great if you joined in. The last contest I joined in with less time left than this if I remember correctly

A little more progress (sorry all the white materials makes everything hard to see):

Started on the second sorceror's table, the one that is supposed to look most like the original, also added a candle to the wizard podium.

From the top molded piece I built a brick lower half of the tomb, still quite WIP, I will be adding some details.

Finished the brickwork for the fireplace, now to make all the little do-dads

Looking good everyone!

Apologies for not updating sooner, I was working from home this last week while watching all three of my kids... Needless to say, I've been a bit preoccupied!

Deadline is Feb 1st, so you guys all still have a little under 3 weeks left.

I haven't made much progress on my own build, but did manage to get all of my Necromunda: Underhive box contents cleaned, assembled, and primered....as well as a zenithal airbrush job on all of the gangers. I got in one partial game using the Gang War rules and about half of the pre-gen gangers from the Underhive box. Overall, the gameplay feels like the classic. We're going to start a Turf War next week that will run about 6 cycles to give the campaign mechanics a test run.

@ Apollinaire: Great piece you built there. I hope you do have time to build a second tile, I'd enjoy seeing another piece like that one.

On to my own progress: I built the third and final version of the sorceror's table for Hero Quest. This one is my favorite of the three.

The Sorceror's table: Necromancer edition

3/4 view of the front

3/4 view of the back

The whole family, all four sorceror's tables, the original and the three new ones I made.

I am wondering if I should cut the skeleton arm holding the scythe off of the table and try to attach it to one of the skeletons that make up the base. Any opinions?

I continued working last night after posting and a bit this morning too.

Two new trestle tables. I wanted them to be bigger than the original Hero Quest tables, but I may have gone a little too far.

A shot showing the bracing underneath

A side view of the tables

I added two swords on the side of thesarcophagus. The blade is a lengthened version of the sword from the top of the sarcophagus, and the handle is cut apart candle sticks like the one on the Necromancer's table.

Apollinaire and Guildenstern, thanks so much! Knowing that people are enjoying my work really helps me push to get more done. Working on all this Hero Quest stuff is making me want to play badly. Hopefully when I finish all of it I'll be able to find some people to play using my new pieces.

I got a little more done, and I'm planning to make molds for mass production, but I'm having trouble deciding the best way to go about that. I use Alumalite Amazing Mold putty for molds, I don't have any of the pour-able stuff, nor any experience using it. I also have instamorph and I think it's called instamold, but haven't really been happy with results compared to the amazing mold putty. Any suggestions?

I made 5 book "masters" to make molds of. If it goes well they will populate my bookcases. They are a little big, but hopefully will be okay.

Thanks Guildenstern. Definitely lots moar rivets to go on!!! And ladders to make it fully playable. I like the railings idea very much. Just feel like I need something more to tie it back to the feel of the original card terrain, as with the platform shape of my first board.

@Apollinaire, looking good! I fully agree on the ladders and railing suggestion. I don't know much about the original card terrain for Necromunda, never got to play unfortunately, but I'm thinking maybe some more walkways to cause models to be able to travel up your piece in a sort of spiraling circle. Right now the raised areas are shaped kind of like a "C". Either that of maybe build a second smaller tower near that red part of the piece near the bottom in the pics. These are only suggestions of course, it's important to follow you artistic vision.

Stretching racks. The second hand Hero Quest I bought off of Ebay is missing most of the small pieces like: every skull, rat, candle, and the arms to the stretching rack. While I was building a new one I made arms for the old one too. I'm planning to paint the arms on the old one brown to match better. Maybe use some oil, stain, or a wash on the new one.

Thanks Fango, it's hard to believe there's only 10 days left after the extra month extension. Where does the time go? I really need to find more hobby time.

A very little bit of progress. I oiled the two mostly wood pieces to see if I could improve the color and wood grain a bit, the popsicle stick is in there for comparison. I also made another small table, because both of the tables I made are much bigger than the original, so I made this smaller one, but mostly it's because I lack time management skills.

I'm hoping to finish this weekend Fango! I'm on call this week so will be house bound and the warden is visiting her creators, so will just be me, the cat and this insane amount of work I've given myself to finish this!

I'm hoping to keep slowly making progress this week, and then paint all weekend to try to finish. It's going to be a close call, especially since work always leaves me so exhausted.

I made this fire yesterday and forgot to photograph it and add it to my post. I made the fire from hot glue attached to little bits of wood.

The fire from different angles.

Except for paint, I consider the stretching rack now finished.

The beginnings of the throne carved out of high density styrofoam

It's hard to tell in the picture, but I have been mass producing the spines of books for my book shelves. Hopefully they will look good.

I decided to keep pushing. Another 2 maybe 2.5 hours of working on building bookcases and preparing books:

The beginnings of the first

Starting the second, making the back of the first.

This is where I stopped for the night, showing a scale shot, and basically how they will have books (still needs shelves).

More work on the bookcases.

I made scrolls from strips of paper rolled up and tied with thin wire.

All the shelves are now in the bookcases. The bookcases are mostly done, except I'll be adding a small facade of wood on the left and right when all the contents are in place,

All of the contents that will be going in the bookcases. They need priming, painting, and gluing in place.

Quick early morning update:

I finally got back to working on the treasure chest that I'm completely sculpting from scratch, and also started on the cupboard. In the back I've started trying to make a fancy iron hinge.

I decided to remake one of the old Mordheim cardboard buildings. The cardboard is starting to fall apart and wanted to recreate it in foamcore. This is the original building:

I took it apart and recreated it in foamcore:

Assembled and then with some extra details added:

Added textured paint and undercoated with a red/brown primer. The textured paint is a mixture of sand, paint, and glue which also protects the edges from the spray primer.

Drybrushed with a yellow ochre paint, then a khaki, and finally a cream color. Painted the stone parts a mid-tone gray and the wood a light brown. Painted the interior with Payne's gray and drybrushed with the same cream color.

Just need to add fire damage to the edges and it'll be done!

@Ozymandias: That's looks really good.
@Guildenstern: I hope you recover quickly and feel better soon.

I made the front of the cupboard today. I still have to do the sides, finished the back, and add "hardware".

Recent progress:

I've been making the mini pieces that sit on the mantle of the fireplace, like in the original picture. Mini-treasure chest isn't done yet.

Almost done with the wood parts of the cupboard, except one side. This is the back.

Here's the front

And "upholstered" the chair

@Syro, your work always amazes me! Your detail is always great, that chair and wood detail are just stunning.

For me I'm afraid I won't make this after all. I've been knocking away at this all day and although I'm mostly finished I have some green stuff work to do and other bits so don't think I'll get this all primed and painted in time. I'm off to Berlin on Wednesday and have band practice Monday so I'll try my best to get this done tonight so I can paint tomorrow! The title of this was going to be "Groznaks Pimpin' Choppa Shoppe" where the main man Groznak gets into a little argument with a disgruntled customer but since this is a usual occurrence he is well prepared.

I hope you and everyone else likes this latest piece, I'm very proud of it. I love the concept behind your piece, so funny. I like how well concealed that second grot is. I hope you'll have time to finish, and if not, I hope you'll post it to your blog for us to check out when you're done.

@Fango: Hey Fango, I'm almost done and I want to check with you on how you would prefer I submit my final pictures for judging. Being that I made a bunch of small pieces rather than the typical single terrain/diorama piece, I'm not sure what to do about the final submission pictures. I have taken the front, top, sides, and back pictures of all my finished pieces grouped together by what they are, but that's 53 pictures. It will be 63 when I'm done. I don't know if I can, or if you would want me to try PMing all of those to you for judging. I'd be fine with posting them all to my P&M blog for you to check when judging, or you could look in my gallery. Maybe there's something else too, that would be better. What would you prefer?

@OneManNoodles: Thanks OMN!

@Camkierhi: Thanks Cam, everyone is doing a great job. Though I think it would be easier to believe you about getting your butt kicked this time if you hadn't won the LoER terrain comps more often than anyone else

A few progress shots below, I will also be posting some shots of finished pieces of Hero Quest furniture on my blog if anyone is interested (Only WIP pics are supposed to be on this thread I think).

The cupboard without any hardware on it yet, this is one of the two remaining pieces I need to finish.

The books, scrolls, and skull ready to be put into the bookcase. I love how the finished bookcases turned out.

The painted fireplace and most of the items that will adorn it.

@Boundless, I'm sorry to hear that you wont have time to finish, but I'm glad you'll still be finishing when you have time. That piece is too fun and cool to abandon.

Progress on my last two pieces of Hero Quest furniture:

I glued on all the hinges today, and made the handles. I just need to wait for the greenstuff to dry. I'm having trouble deciding what color I want all the hardware on this to be. I haven't had any metal pieces be the original cast iron color.

This whole time I thought I would be making a writing desk for the last piece, but with some recent research it's actually an "alchemy bench". I had forgotten after all these years, and my set didn't come with the set of scales or bottles, which gave it most of its character. It doesn't look like much now, but I'm hoping this will look good when I'm done. I'm planning on filling the area with alchemy equipment inspired by Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, rather than the letters, ink well, quill pen, etc.

Walls are totally stalled, just can't get the next stage of painting to look right.

However, I had a backup project for just that reason.

Shadespire impassible terrain.

after all the careful work cutting exact hexes for the bases I realized that I'f I don't have clean hexes they will work better on the normal battle field too, which brings us to this...

...and at this point I realized if I'd made the 3 hex section from 1 and 2 hex sections I'd have been covered for all possible board layouts...but it was too late and I soldiered on anyway)

I've got them all painted up and just need to do the last details before I send pics to Fango.

@Syro_ looking good, so many small, incredibly detailed pieces.

Post by: Syro_

@Z-Ray: Those three pieces of impassible terrain are looking good, but it's a real shame about stalling out on your walls. I was showing a few of my friends this thread and explaining how the contests work: that Fango is judge this time because he won the last contest, and you were judge of the last contest because you won the contest before that. This was right before we got to one of your recent pictures of your wall sections (the one with the riveted plates and several unpainted necromunda figures standing in front) Their immediate response was "I can see why he won one of the contests before". I agreed

I'm also relieved to say I'm on here because I just finished my last piece of furniture. I'm getting ready to send the pics into Fango.

@Syro_ Thanks, I was gutted that I couldn't get them finished in time but not as much as I would be if I rushed it.

as it is I still haven't had a game of NUcromunda since the release :( but I have played a bunch of games of Shadespire in that time, so these ruins will get more board time anyway.

@Guildenstern: I'm glad you're feeling better, good luck finishing!

Really amazing work all round guys! Looks like were winding down to the final hours here....about 9PM PST as of this post, so 3 more hours to go!

That being said, I won't be checking for the photos until tomorrow morning, so as long as they are in there by then, you'll be golden!

Apologies for not being more active the last couple of weeks. I've been slammed with work from my second job...and I am currently taking a break from a case that is due tonight to post this.

I did start to lay out the lines for scoring/cutting on the platform for my tower project this last weekend, so I'll post an image here shortly...and if you all are interested in the future progress of it, I will start posting updates in my project blog linked in my signature (sadly left unupdated for some time).

I'll post again after the contest is over with links to the public voting thread, so everyone can get a good look at the final submissions.

@Syro_ feel free to submit your pieces as you mentioned, as see that a group shot may hide some of the intricate work you've done on that Hero Quest stuff. Though, please do submit a series of 'collection' shots (using angles as described in the contest rules) for us to post in the public voting thread.

Best of luck to everyone!

Thanks for the suggestion Fango, I had forgotten that part in the rules. Hopefully this is coming in on time, since I didn't find your message until I got up this morning. But I just sent you a second PM with group shots of the pieces along with written descriptions of the process. If either the first PM with the huge number of pics of the pieces, or the second one didn't make it through to you, please let me know.

Ok everyone, the Public Voting thread is up HERE. Head on over and Vote!!!

@All of the Finalists - Syro_ was the only one to provide me with details and descriptions of how their build went, what materials they used, etc. If you want to provide me with something to append to the voting thread, send it over ASAP. Might be a good idea to send a shot of the original piece you were replicating as well, so those not familiar with the terrain/board game, can compare/see the inspiration. If you have other photos or angles that you think might help (I just posted all of the photos everyone sent me) go ahead and send them my way and I'll add them to the thread as well.

Good Luck!

Ok everyone, apologies for the delay on getting this announcement up...again, still slammed with work and RL!

Expert guest judge 'inmygravenimage' and I toiled long and hard to pick the winner in this contest. All entries were fantastic, and even the public vote was very close!

1st Place! - Syro_ - This project was incredibly ambitious and full of loads of fine detail. A fantastic mixture of interesting processes, innovative use of a range of materials, and hand sculpting of texture and details. Another aspect that pushed this project to the top was how well documented the process was...including fairly consistent updates in this thread. Graven and I both agree this project was really well conceived! Congrats Syro_!

2nd Place - Apollinaire - Being a die-hard fan of Necromunda, and the original box set card terrain in particular, it was hard for me to not play favorites with this project. Graven and I both agree, this build is really fun and ambitious with lots of great details and loads of RIVETS! The only thing that held this one back from top honors was that it seems a bit flimsy and home-made in places...that being said, as Apollinaire's first terrain competition entry, he made a solid build with loads of character and really captured the spirit and design language of the pieces that inspired it. I think we'll see more great things coming from this contestant in the future as his techniques and precision improve! Great job Apollinaire!

3rd (Tie) - Z-ray & Ozymandias. - Both of these were fairly simple, and expertly built...but both Graven and I agree, compared to the other entries, they were perhaps a bit too simple. I know I'm not the only one who would have really liked to see Z-Ray's Underhive wall sections in their final/completed form, and don't think we'll be disappointed when we finally do. Ozy recreated that ruined building section in record time and (as he is part of my local gaming group) it was great to see him participate in this competition. I think it also has to be mentioned that he recieved only one fewer vote than the winner in the public voting thread! I can't wait to see Ozy's Mordheim/Malifaux terrain collection grow. Congrats guys and great job on these builds!

Ok, Syro_, You are now officially a member of the League of Extraordinary Riveters, and I proudly hand the torch over to you to get the next competition rolling! PM me so we can discuss the theme of the terrain prize I'll be building and sending your way.

Finally, Thanks to all of the contestants, including the ones that didnt make it to the finish line...I've participated in and NOT completed more terrain competitions than I have finished...so I certainly understand when RL takes over and saps even more of the limited hobby time we are normally afforded.

Woohoo! That is super exciting, and thanks for the congratulations everyone! I'm very excited to have won, and proud to be a member of the league now. These competitions have really pushed me to put much more detail into my work, and have pieces I'm very proud of. Also, great work to everyone I was competing against, very good and interesting pieces all around.

Luckily ever since I first joined these competitions I've been mulling over ideas of what I would have the theme be, if I was able to win. So I already have a (hopefully good) idea, and will start working on putting up the next competition post immediately. I hope to see lots of people joining up and inspiring each other.

P.S. If a current league member could send me the code to be able to fly the LoER colors in my sig, I'd appreciate it. I know I've seen it posted how to do it multiple times, but I'm currently having trouble finding it.
