This space to be updated soon with more information, but the NOVA Open is returning in 2018 for its 9th consecutive year.
The room block will go out in today's newsletter, and will be reposted here. Last year we sold the hotel out very quickly, so don't miss out this year.
As usual, the event will run on Labor Day Weekend, from Wednesday 8/29 through Sunday 9/2.
REGISTRATION OPENS ONE MONTH LATER THAN LAST YEAR, ON MARCH 1ST AT 8PM US EST
Stay tuned to novaopen.com for more info, to this thread, and e-mail customerservice@novaopen.com to sign up for our newsletter.
Some key notes ...
1. The Charity Foundation Bar upgraded to the Rooftop Restaurant with views of all of DC and National Airport for the entire event this year, not just Sat and Sun. We'll be adding open mic, comedy, and other activities throughout the weekend to take advantage of the much larger space.
2. Fantasy Flight Game's Star Wars National Championships are returning to NOVA Open for X-Wing, Destiny, Armada, IA, and more. We are also adding a heavy dose of Legion! These events sold out in a matter of hours to days last year.
3. Games Workshop & Forge World will be returning in force.
More info to come!

Reminders ...
We've only sent the hotel reg link through newsletter and registration is still nearly a month away, but the hotel is well beyond half sold out anyway.
Make sure you email customerservice@novaopen.com to sign up for the newsletter if you haven't yet. Substantial information will be included in the February 15 newsletter, though we'll push it simultaneously to the website.

Registration opens this Thursday at 8PM US EST.
This year looks to once again be extraordinary, with some pretty incredible special guests, new features and expansions on what's going on each day (nightly entertainment in the charity lounge, for instance), and perhaps our best schedule yet.
Information is largely complete and available, including event primers, at both novaopen.com and novaopenstore.com
We've also once again revised and improved upon our trendsetting mission pack for the 40K GT. As always, we thrive on feedback, so take a look and let us know how it plays out for you!
Only the first 500 registrants get swag bags, the hotel is quite close to capacity again, and many events will sell out on Thursday night ... Be ready!

Over 800 people registered in the first 10 minutes, which is ... well, magnitudes faster than ever before.

Between the return of GW in a big way and the fact NOVA hosts the National US Champs for all the Star Wars / FFG games, plus the steady growth of nearly every other event, yeah ... we hit 2k last year and are likely to eclipse that by a wide margin this year.

I was on at exactly 8pm last night so I could, hopefully, snag a SuperNOVA . I selected it and tried to checkout but was told I had to login first…no guest checkout…sigh. So I login re-add the SuperNOVA which at this point the site said there were 69 left. I immediately began the checkout process by selecting my shirt size, my preferred army and bag option. Click on Next to, I assume, fill in my credit card info. And there I sat for five minutes. I figured no big deal as I had my purchase safely tucked away in my cart and I’m sure the site was inundated so I didn’t mind waiting. After 5 mins or so of watching chrome wait for the next page it updated with “This item is no longer available”. WTF!? It was in my cart! I was purchasing it less than 10 minutes after I selected it. Come on NOVA you guys are running with the big boys now time to use shopping cart technology that was written this century. Needless to say I was/am extremely upset as I did EVERYTHING right. It was in my CART for God’s sake. What more could I have done to secure my purchase people?! I would strongly suggest you all spend the next 8 months reviewing your website – it’s in dire need of a back-end upgrade. You can mitigate a lot of the slowness you’re seeing by upgrading to a cloud based technology and again you really need to reevaluate your choice of shopping cart technology. I am so bummed… But I will say this is a great event and I will definitely be there one way or another...just had a lousy experience last night...needless to say I cried myself to sleep :(

Those bags sell out in literal seconds. You need to have all your ducks in a row before the clock strikes 8 to even have a chance: already signed in to the NOVA store, 2 factor authentication turned off for paypal, etc. This is my 4th year getting one and the last few years have been so stressful on registration day that I think next year I'm going to pass (on the bag, not the convention). It takes what should be a fun experience and makes it miserable. The pre-sale for previous year's SuperNOVAs this year was a nice touch, though, and I really appreciate that it was done.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Ticketmaster-like system when once the item is in your cart you have a hold on it for X minutes while you complete your purchase and if you take longer, it goes back into the pool. Having literal seconds to make a purchase that involves filling out a form is not the best.

I figured just sitting there with my finger on the button to add it to my cart would be sufficient. No guest check-out is uncool. Making it a race to see who can get to the submit your money the fastest is also very uncool. Both of these issues are fixable and I would strongly urge the tech people behind NOVA to look into this as it leads to a very bad experience otherwise and no one wants that.

Other than a couple of Nightfight ala carte slots, the 40K Narrative is sold out.
40K Trios Team Tournament is sold out.
40K GT is half sold out and literally 400% last year's pace (Which led to an eventual sellout).
30K events are also all sold out or selling out.

Question about the 40k champs tertiary. It says that when your unit captures an objective they immediately become visible and don’t benefit from character. If a unit requires blocked line of sight for cover purposes IE a tank or monster. Do they still benefit from cover for being obscured or are they now completely visible?

So, since GW likes to leave rules in beta for a long time from what we've seen so far, the question becomes: is NOVA going to use our new beta rules?
I guess while I'm bothering you: with no Imperial Armour release in sight, can Custodes players use the beta rules for their new units too?

They won't get real rules until an Imperial Armor comes out for Custodes as I understand it and there's no rumors of one of those being anytime in the foreseeable future.

Question about the relic mission in the 40K champs. If you take turn by turn you can only score 15 pts instead of the 18. You score a max of 3 per turn for 5 turns. Is that right?

The Super Swag Bag and everything else went on sale on March 1 and lasted quite literally 4 seconds.
We are down to 14 x 40K GT tickets, and much of the rest of the con is sold out, nearing 2000 attendees already, which was last year's final total.

Can someone explain how deployment is chosen? I was reviewing the primer and it mentions 3 types of deployment on average per mission. The mission is decided for each round by the TO? Then when rolling for deployment the person who wins the roll picks both the map type and the side from the available choices?

The final packet will fix deployment. We are also releasing a revised mission packet that will do so in just a couple days.

What are the odds of the 40k Waitlist shrinking? Are they're a lot of drops usually? Would it be worth it to just show up?
14076
Post by: MVBrandt
A) Are you on the wait list?
B) Yes, it's probably worth it to show up
Traditionally, there will be people who will drop over the next 2.5 months due to various reasons and things coming up in life, and the wait list will get processed through. Additionally, not everyone ON the wait list will show up hoping for a spot, and there's usually an attrition of around 10-15 players most years who simply no-show b/c they can't come but just didn't bother or consider dropping their registration or letting us know.
Right now, the wait list is around 60 players, which I think probably has a decent chance of getting through a fair bit of it in "practice" if you show up, simply b/c of the aforementioned variables.
But that's obviously no guarantee
Personally, I'd really like as many wait listers as possible to show up, as I'd love to fire at precisely 256 - the format works really well every year, but it hits a point of absolute karma at a proper # ratio to the round total, and it would be really special to hit it.
If by some chance you are unable to get in, there's also a million things to do both 40K related and in general, ranging from comedians and live music in the charity lounge, to jumping in as a ringer or judge when needed, to playing in narrative and recon squads (and if it's out in time, kill teams) events, to shadespire and necromunda, etc. None of which may be up your alley OVER the GT, but the point is there are things to get into and enjoy regardless.

Post by: Regis Terzieff-Godefroy
Mike - thanks for your work on the event, I always have a blast at the GT!
I do have questions about some of the updates to the primer. Specifically the Tailored Ops and the new clause "You may not earn more than one point for destroying any one unit. If such a unit would award points to multiple Ops, you must decide which it scores at the time it is destroyed." I understand the reasoning for this, but it may cause confusion.
For example, how does 'Cull the Hordes' interact with other secondaries like 'Marked for Death'? If I destroy 10 models, and then destroy another 10-man unit that I've Marked for Death, do I get MfD and CtH? What if the order was reversed? The wording of the rules might suggest that in the first case I could only score 1 point, whereas in the second case I would score 2 points.
There would be similar issues with a lot of the Tailored Ops that depend on killing units/models like Moment of Bloodshed, Headhunter, and Old School to name a few where the order in which people kill units could impact their score.
I appreciate any clarification on this, and I'm otherwise liking the new changes!
14076
Post by: MVBrandt
We're working to clarify that now, so good catches.
The long and short is that all of the Tac Ops that are achieved by killing a specific unit can't be stacked, and our clarifications will make that read correctly.
So, Moment of Bloodshed and Cull the Hordes are unaffected.
But if you Mark a 10-Wound Warlord for Death and select Old School and Big Game Hunter, you cannot score all 3 when you kill the Warlord. You'd only be able to score one of them (thus it wouldn't necessarily be a very good choice, since you'd automatically miss out on 2 of 3 points you committed to the choice).
More realistic scenario is your opponent has 5 Troops and you Mark 4 of them for Death while selecting Strike the Rank and File. If you kill one of the Marked troops, you have to decide then and there whether you are scoring the point for Strike or Marked. You can't score 2 points for the kill.

How is "in time" defined? And how do you know it's amazing? Did I miss a rules preview? My main concern is the long lead time on getting my models bought and painted, if the army construction rules for the new KT are changing that's going to be a big problem without a month (or more) of preparation time.

I think it likely that if Kill Teams releases before July ends, we'll adopt it.
Otherwise not only would attendees not have time to adjust, we wouldn't have time to digest the rules among the team, calibrate the missions (if they work) for organized play, etc.
And I say it's awesome because I'm a tester. It's super awesome and super accessible.

Got it, so non-public information but reliable. Can you say anything about the army construction rules? The current document specifies a 200 point army chosen by the normal rules (other than one under-strength unit). Do the new rules use the same 40k codices and point costs or an entirely different "codex" specifically for kill team? Will an army that is legal under the current event rules continue to be legal in the new game, even if it isn't optimal for winning? Will the differences be small enough to only change a model or two? Or should we expect major changes to the point that it isn't worth committing to a set of models until the rules for the event are chosen and final? And do you know if/how FW rules (like DKoK) will be supported?

So whats the active measure to manage expectations for cheating as opposed to making it up during a lunch break like ATC? Even as a non-partcipant I'm getting spammed to donate.
A lot of us know most of the charitable contributions come from the silent auctions and vendors fees.
Why should I contribute? Having been solicited, that makes me a potential stake holder. Sell it.

I did do that. The Gent calmly explained to me the background and in and outs of the (turns out) global raffle. I now firmly understand the intent and these contributions for the raffle have no impact on prizes. Very smart NOCF. I apologize that I apparently came accross offensive. I feel my questions considering the information provided were appropriate. Now that someone in the know actually provided information and some helpful keystrokes. I realize I was way off base irt the charity raffle.
I'm glad someone took the time to explain. More of the same up to that point.
Again, please excuse my post and ignorance irt to the raffle. Its very clever and seems like a great effort supported by tons of charitable gamers. Pretty amazing actually.

TY byte. The NOVA Open is vastly more than a 40K GT, which is less than 10% of our attendance. If you want to ping customerservice@novaopen.com about heavy questions in re cheaters at NOVA please do. Just don't want this to become the ATC thread when its purpose is not that.

Where can we find the lists for the Invitational? Being invited to predict pairings (by the FLG article today) is all well and good but theres no lists to look at to make that judgement

So maybe I'm just crazy, but I'm reading through the GT Primer and I can't figure out how the LoS blocking feature of the center Ruins work and how you distinguish that with the partial LoS blocking feature of the outer Ruins. Can someone explain this?
I understood full LoS blocking Ruins to work like this (stolen from Reddit):
So imagine that "[]" is a building. A "o" is a model.
o................[]o
^ Model A // ^ Model B
In the above example, Model A cannot shoot at Model B. Even if Model A can see Model B through windows or cracks in the building, Model A may not shoot at Model B and vice versa. Since 8th is pretty shooty, or I should say, Warhammer 40K itself is pretty shooty, making it so the bottom floor protects models no matter what helps to make it a more interesting game. This is also important with the changes to 8th in regards to shooting since it is easier to draw line of sight, and to hit models.
o................[o]
^ Model A // ^ Model B
In the above example, Model A may shoot at Model B provided he can draw line of sight because Model B is inside the building itself. Model B is also benefiting from a cover save, so it helps to kind of "cancel" it out.
..................[]o
o................[]o
^ Model A // ^ Model B
Note that in this example, Model B is tall enough to go up and over the first story. Model A can draw line of sight to model B from the second story, so Model A may shoot at Model B if it can see it through the second story. This is to make it so that large creatures don't get to hide as easily. Most infantry and tanks would be able to hide behind a first story building in most situations.
Using this rule will make your games more fun and make them a little bit more balanced.
Is this how the center Ruins work at NOVA? If so, what does 'partial' blocking do, then?
14076
Post by: MVBrandt
That looks like the ITC rule and no we certainly don't use it. Blocking just is letting you know the pieces completely and actually block LOS as we built the terrain with tall, wide, solid walls.
The partially blocking pieces are ruins but are varyingly more porous (ie windows) and so are variably less likely to physically block LOS.
We play with rulebook true LOS and just a metric shitton of lovingly volunteer crafted terrain.

Warhammer stream is free watching live, just need to pay for back games. You also get one free sub per month with Amazon Prime, if you'd happen to have that and would be interested enough in these games to throw it that way.

PSA. How to follow the Nova Invitational this weekend. (And the Open later too)
Games Workshop Stream w/ Geoff and Frankie: https://www.twitch.tv/warhammer
Beast Coast Stream: https://www.twitch.tv/beast_coast_gaming
Brackets for Invitational to see results: https://challonge.com/NOVAinvite18
The Warhammer stream is awesome and it'll encourage GW to do more stuff like this. Geoff and Frankie are doing a fantastic job!
P.S. - For lists, watch the streams, they post them in chat for the matches happening at the time.

there's slight variation. Kopach had hellhounds, gonyo had sentinals and a couple crusader units.
Ultimately though, the core list was the same, as it was for most of the top finishers

Thank you NOVA bubbas. Im starting to become a believer.
Completely impressed this year. I know its based out of the beltway and Im a southern Virginia purist. But I think yous got it right this year.
Thank you MVBRANDT and your team. A very high bar has been set. Incredible venue. Your Necromunda coordinator plays out of my club and a former 30k singles champ as well. Ive had some great games with Mike Walsh in the past so I get it. Respect...

Most of the previous commentary about big tournaments has been about controversies surrounding possible cheating. There hasn't actually been a huge amount of commentary from other tournaments about general tournament stuff outside of that. I suppose that's a good thing in this case - no controversies on the playing side and what looks to be a well-run tournament (unlike a certain London-based tournament) so no news is good news.
Having said that, if we're seeing one list dominate so much it really isn't healthy for the game at all. Looks like there's still lots of work to do getting the balance of 40k right. I still think the power of soup is the biggest problem that needs to be solved, but there are others too.

he sure is a good player but Nanavati and Brandon grant made two critical mistakes so he won, that list is too dependent by 1st turn and good dice, imho.

Castellans with limitless CP certainly did impact the meta. And yeah the GT was as close to perfect as we could get. No major controversy or drama that we could see, extremely good play, and it ran both smoothly and perfectly on time.

The tourneys have been great in this regard.
It was painful seeing a few of these past tourneys won by intentional slow playing, almost to the point of embarrassingly being justified...
Loving the trend now, good play and quality players.

So I recorded the top 11 lists before my BCP disappeared (meant top 10 but I snagged an extra one by mistake so here you go!). There may be some mistakes/missing bits due to the pictures of the player's list uploaded to BCP having clipping errors. I don't remember the exact order of their placings, but here you go (I intend to make a General Discussion of them too)
'Sexi Mexi' Presents "Diamond is Unbreakable"
Chris (Last Name Illegible) NOVA List
Alan Blakerborough's NOVA List
-This one has lots crossed out and hand-written notes so it's extra hard to decipher-
Shane Watts Presents 'Peace Through Dakka'
Alex Ing's NOVA List
-This one is ENTIRELY handwritten and is probably the least decipherable of them all-
Jason Curtis's NOVA List
Nick Nanavati, King of Finlandia, Hunter of Trolls, Drinker of Drinks, Breaker of Models, Prophet of Fateweaver and Lord of the Warp Token Presents 'The NOVA Winning List'
-Note: While it won many games, this list did not win NOVA, contrary to its name.
Erik Illegible's NOVA List
No Name Given's NOVA List
-Seriously guys, put your names on your lists. I beg you.
Andrew Gonyo's NOVA List
-This is the list that won.
Unprinted Name's NOVA List
Hope you all enjoy! Congratulations to all the NOVA staff and players for a great tournament!

That's weird. I thought Nanavati brought Yncarne instead of Yvraine. Does that suck letting a <10 HP character get killed by a model with a humongous base.

Friend of mine went in with 5-ish Russes, 2 Manticores, a Hellhound, a smattering of infantry and a naked Shadowsword. I think he won a few games. Custodes Supreme Command Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Vexilus Praetor (no note on which flag)
And this is why I hate tournaments. The Custodes sent 3 commanders to help, and a dude with a banner. That makes sense!

Due to his lack of shooting, Nick's matchup against Primarchs is awful; it wasn't necessarily a mistake, he just attempted an incredibly risky play to try to put himself in a better position in a bad matchup, and it failed.
He was on track to lose just as badly if he'd done nothing, so he took a shot. And it was the Yncarne, not Yvraine.

I only met Juice this past event, and played him in the semi's of Bracket 2.
I can tell ya, he is first class person and player, through and through. He is not the type to do, or forgot he could not do something. His play was perfection against me, and that's 4 days in, after 10+ Games.

custodes don't operate like that though. The codex makes clear, as do the books, that individual custodes operate on their own initiative all the time. A shield captain isn't even a particularly official title. It's literally a dude that other custodes acknowledge is worthy of following.
Custodes don't operate like a modern military. They don't detach squads from an overall command structure with a strict military hierarchy. Three shield captains could literally be three dudes with some prominence showing up to wreck gak.
