always wanted to do something like a ocean rig and seeing Warhammer worlds ferro giant-alphus I decided to have a go, so lets go, started out with 6mm MDF board as base and Styrofoam block, some tubing for the legs which will be detailed and many games workshop kits, here are early pictures will update as I go along

looks amazing, I would love to do something similar, do you have a rough estimate of how much you spent on GW terrain to create this?

thanks i will have to work that out for interest but as of now not spent anything apart from the foamboard base as i sold off parts from my previous emperor class titan project and bits i did'nt need from the sector mechanicus kits i bought

Looking good! I'd suggest painting what you have built before going further and then adding layer after painting them. IIRC it's what the GW terrain team did, as otherwise you can't reach the innards to paint them.

done some more work on the sea, cut out strips for the deep part of the waves

the cut offs from this i turned upside down and glued to board to give the higher waves, ready for filler to be placed and sculpted over,

Interesting...I'll be curious to see how this ends up. I think some serious liberty would have to be taken to make it very playable/fun. There are some full MDF oil rigs out there which look pretty fantastic.

Yep its a Munda table if iv ever seen one.

it might need one more central fight area and los blocking walls here and there (like machinery and crates) and you are good to go.

thanks, there will be lots of detail in it like crates, barrels, machinery etc some more larger areas of flooring as well, also a landing pad, once completed I will also be making a pipeline out to a jetty, dock for shipping of promethium with a imperial transport ship of some sort

it was from a online wallpaper shop I bought wallpaper off some time ago, knew it would come in handy it is thick and strong enough to hold the weight of the rig

so I tried doing the welds with milliput I had lying around but too much hassle getting it to stick whilst sculpting so ordered some green stuff and will do it with that but looks like it will look good, so I sculpted the algae growth on the pillers from air dried clay, good effect I think

and this is where up too, it's all dry fitted to make it easier to paint and plan levels

I like it, especially the level of detail work on the scratch built parts! Only thing that throws it off for me is how the cylinders don't line up with the support pillars. Having them continue up throughout the structure will add the feeling of weight to them instead of having them offset and unsupported.

Many thanks, that is indeed an interesting piece...the flat side has its merits...

As for glueing stuff to that slick plastic , there are two options...:
One, you drill the plastic and shove the rods in it...or you use a mixture of super glue and backing soda ... together this forms an evil crystalline mess...sturdy as hell...but one knock could still scrap stuff off... you could sand of course the to be glued surfaces first...that can help...or carving thin lines....

The upper star like structure is also highly promising!

started the paint on the pillars, wanted to use a rusty base coat and add heavy weathering from there, found Vallejo air red on black undercoat gave a good base with the airbrush, the rest hand painted and sponged, also used crackle to give the cracked paint, some came out great some not so, so a bit hit and miss but still a good look, still a couple layers to go but looking goood

managed to get sea painted, basically used green, black and blue acrylic paints and mixed from dark for the dips in seas, to various shades for waves and sponged white to crests of waves and dabbed white around pillars for more agitated effect, gloss varnished and when dry will add more effects with liquidtex medium

Thats insanely cool... If I may suggest something though, maybe add some shacks, lean-tos or, if that doesnt work with your vision, maybe a shrine or something? Currently there doesnt really seem to be anything to allow people to inspect the site, to work there or anything... and actually, an access point could be useful as well. A pier, a bridge/pipeline leading to the mainland, that kind of stuff? Unless its only meant to be accessible by air, ofc.

This is all looking so damn good.
I do suggest however adding in a couple ramps between the main levels as this would add some more space for gaming utility wise.
Also I think adding some other things to the pump (pipes, a control unit) should make it stand out more

Love watching this blog

back on board after a couple weeks of illness, started by adding flashing led lights to landing pad and painting started

started painting the supports, air brushed leadbelcher on a black base coat, it seems darker than the base coat they do and gave a mottled effect good for weathering as I progress, after a drybrush of leadbelcher base to bring out detail and a wash of sepia ink dry off with kitchen towel, next will be the detail painting and rusting

my own version of ferro giant-alphus promethium rig @ 2018/04/27 15:14:28

Post by: bobbuilder

wanted the walkways to look like they were painted but time and weather have caused it to deteriorate over the years, how I did it black base, air brushed leadbelcher which drys with a mottle effect and darker than base leadbelcher which I dry brushed on randomly next after a coat of Vallejo sepia dried I started with sponging hellion green on then rusting was done with Vallejo browns, still got to do details and a final light sponge of leadbelcher but I think I have the desired effect, what do you guys think

also started landing pad, used crackle medium in places to see if I can another effect to weathering

The metal certainly looks grungy and corroded. If you're after an effect for multiple layers of knackered paint, then dsteingas has a great tutorial for it using salt weathering. I've used it for my Necromunda bulkhead and barricades and it is easy and effective.

This is looking great bob, it's going to be a really cool board when you're done. I especially love what you've done with the sea and supports, and the crane mounting.

The only thing that I'm not too keen on is the painting on the walkways - it looks a bit too blotchy for my taste with the high contrast between the remaining bright paint and the corroded/rusted bits. It's still carried off really well though.

Good job, I look forward to seeing more.

Wow this is a lovely terrain project. I'm actually blown away most by the water. It looks so realistic and violent, I love it. Really gives the vibe of a massive storm out in the middle of some alien sea, with disgruntled Prometheum refinery workers walking across rusted platforms while some horrible xenos monsters waits beneath the surface, hoping one of the workers falls off and becomes a tasty morsel.

I'll definitely be following this! Exalted!

Just read through the whole thread. What amazing work.

Very creative and the amount of detail you’re putting in really bring it to life.

Can’t wait to see it finished!

Exalted!

thank you, a xenos monster in the water,,, now theres a thought

I like the landing shuttle. I think it captures the spirit of what they intended for the Storm Raven than the kit by itself does.

thank you, pleased the way it came out

not done too much to it but added some more railings to base level all with same worn paint look, also starting the detailing on vats
