No, not a series of my own peculiar brand of selfies, but one about that wonderful movie genre, Horror.

Now I’m not sure of its international availability, but I’ve been greatly enjoying the streaming service ‘Shudder’.

And from that, I’d like to recommend the low key ‘Don’t Grow Up’. It’s a movie in the well-worn Infection sub-genre. And for me, one of the best I’ve seen in a long, long time.

It’s mostly in the mound of 28 Days Later, except with less pulse pounding action. Instead, it runs with a far subtler approach. The central premise is again familiar, there’s some kind of manky infection that drives adults to become frenzied lunatics. We’ve seen much the same before, but never to my mind with such sobriety and restraint. There are truly shocking moments in it, but not in a LOOK AT THE GORES way. Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised to find that nobody actually dies from The Stupids - and whilst not particularly graphic, that really adds a lot.

The youthful cast acquit themselves well, and we get just enough character building to feel a real empathy with them. Again, I find that very refreshing in an age of ‘by the numbers’ Horror.

I won’t say much more, as I don’t want to give any plot details away. I’ll simply finish my half-arsed review with a strong recommendation to give it a spin. It really is a refreshing take on a worn genre. Whilst some may not feel it as strongly as I do, I genuinely believe that nobody can say it’s not a good film. Certainly I’ll be keeping an eye out for more from the cast and crew.

So, that’s my opening salvo of a contribution. And to prove I’m not some kind of movie snob, here’s the mail order’s I’m awaiting (none of these are made up!)

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers
Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama
Sewage Baby
Scalps
Nail Gun Massacre
Dead Heat
Intruder

Oh yes. Shonky B-Movies all the way! Just because I appreciate genuinely good Horror, doesn’t mean I’ve forsaken the ‘rubbish but ultimately fu ‘ bread and butter of the genre!

So chip in. Reviews, comments, recommended viewing. All are welcome in the Scary Thread Of Horrific Horror,

I can throw a couple into this as the other half and I are horror buffs.

One we saw quite recently on a whim was a movie called "Devil" about a bunch of people trapped in a lift and being done in one a time. The plot is stupid but it does very well at building a sense of dread. Worth checking out.

An older but extremely good mindscrew movie is an Asian flick called " A Tale of Two Sisters". I've watched that at least 6 times and have only really gotten a general idea of what happened. Good thought provoking movie.

And of course I'd recommend binge watching all of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Hellraiser" movies just for some good comedy value.

Oh and as a side note, Cabin in the Woods. Just watch it.

Also, not a movie but a series, but if you're looking for something kinda creepy, check out Channel Zero on SYFY. Each season is just 6 episodes long, and the first 2 seasons have been pretty creepy.. 3rd season is coming soon too, looks to be more of the same.

For low-budget fun I'd recommend

Feast (not the sequels)

Rec 1 & 3 (yes 3 is a very slender link but trying to be like Shaun of the Dead is better than trying to be RE)

La Horde, (The Raid meets Romero)

Pontypool

Banshee Chapter

Recently watched back-to-back The Thing movies, in narrative chronological order. The 2011 prequel is not a bad movie but it also doesn't compare favorably to the 1982 film. I think the 2011 filmmakers were motivated by their love of John Carpenter's work but the producers were only on board for the franchise/brand potential. For example, although many practical effects were made and some were even shot, Universal infamously demanded the film use CGI. So I don't want to sing that old tune about how much better practical effects are over CGI - the real point for me here is that I think the 2011 producers wanted a creature feature. I'm not sure if it's because they misunderstood the 1982 film or just lacked confidence in a cabin fever scenario drama. But the result is that the 2011 movie has a disassociative vibe, with its surprisingly solid plot-driven elements pulling in one direction and the cheesy CGI monster stuff pulling in another.

I'd definitely recommending watching, or re-watching both - just not back-to-back.

If you follow this blog, you probably already know that it was confirmed back in October that Rob Zombie is making a sequel to “The Devil’s Rejects. If you don’t follow it, now would be the time to do so. According to Bloody Disgusting the “rumor” is Rob Zombie is planning to start shooting the movie this March, with the rumor of the title to be “The Devil’s Rejects 2: Three From Hell”. Keep in mind that the shooting date and the title is uncomfirmed and could possibly change.

Rob Zombie is also is negotiations with Saban Films and Lionsgate to release the sequel in theaters, VOD, and home video.

This seems to be the only current update for the film, but make sure to follow Sinful Horror for more updates to come, it will be

I loved the first Sinister movie; still gives me chills. Se7en is easily my favorite "horror" movie of all time, although I more consider it a psychological thriller. I tend to use horror movies during painting time, because they usually have a very formulaic plot (good time to mention Cabin in the Woods!!) And Tucker and Dale vs Evil is amazing.

The best horror movie ever is The Thing. It is a masterpiece of tension building and existential dread. It's a monster that reproduces every cell of your body perfectly, until it is attacked. You could be fully convinced you are fine, until someone comes after you with a flammenwerfer and your head sprouts legs, crawls off your body and darts away.

Most other horror movies are either hokey, torture porn, hom-coms, or just generally full of "if you aren't stupid, this whole movie wouldn't happen".

This weekend, I’ve watched....

Nail Gun Massacre - traditionally rubbish.
Scalps - interesting and low budget. Transfer could’ve been smartened up
Dead Heat - cracking cop/zombie buddy movie.
Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Ridiculous but fun
Sewage Baby. Elements of The Thing, if it was made by hormonal teenagers. Which I think it was! Good fun though

Next up, Intruder.

All of those released by 88 Films, who specialise in Video nasty releases. They’re in the same ballpark as Arrow Video, but not the same league. Whilst I enjoy their fare, Arrow just do it better for my money.

We got Ash Vs the Evil dead last year season 1 and 2. Looking forward to seeing just what happens next.

Growing up my dad would put the Thing on and tell me he put on my "favorite movie." Insert eye roll here lol.
I really enjoyed the 2011 The Thing and kept looking at how they carried over the continuity. Not the monster but the ending especially moves right into the other movie. I'd love to see a third movie. I saw a preview of something that resembled the Thing but on a boat. I can't remember the name of the movie it's only a few years old.

Another enjoyable movie from a few years ago is Pandorum (from 2009) Good fun.

Out of the loop for modern ones but...
Zombie movies, the original Romero Trilogy (Night, Dawn and Day of the dead).
Lovercraftian Horror: Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy (the absolutely excellent from any standpoint The Thing, and the minor Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness).
Psychological: Jacob's Ladder and Rosemary's baby
I remember I enjoyed The Ring and The Eye at least for some choice made.
The Poltergeist.
Absolutely The Fly. Cronenberg is fantastic in general.
Many of Dario Argento like Suspiria, Deep Red, Phenomena (the US cut, Creepers, is meh).
Other italians, but unapologetically B-movies, Mockbusters of american ones, and anything Bava.

Got a bit bored with Ash v ED S2 today so decided to watch The Devil's Rejects (by Rob Zombie).

Not really what I'd call horror, but it's classified as such everywhere. Not scary, but quite nasty & uncomfortable in parts. Also very funny in parts, but that could just be be me. Pretty solid acting from some of the cast, too.

Gonna give Pandorum a go next

I had a binge on horror films with the Mrs this weekend, there were a few excellent films out of those we watched;

1. Hidden - suspense for days. Bit of a drama too.
2. Starry Eyes - a brilliant exploration of the depths people will go for fame. Deep and witty.

If you haven't already seen them (though I imagine you have), you should immediately watch;

Cannae whack a bit of Vintage Hammer!

I've got that boxed set they did, and every now and then dip into it.

And if we're discussing Hammer, one must also mention Amicus, 'the Studio That Dripped Blood'.

A rival British studio to Hammer, probably best noted for the their 'portmanteau' series of films, a series which I spent a month or two collecting. And they're pretty wonderful. Some are of course ropey old nonsense (the one with Jon Pertwee and the Vampire is a hoot!), but definitely worth a watch.

It's a shame the portmanteau style of film making went largely out of fashion. From memory, there's only really Trick R Treat and the likes of Creepshow recently which continue it.

Fantastic film and the prequel is great.

Agree about many horror films especially slasher flicks most especially Scream - I hate and despise that film - seriously just wanted one where the girl in peril pulls a gun and blows the pathetic knife wielder away.

See, that's the moment The Walking Dead truly impressed me. Carol, Lizzie and 'look at the flowers'.

For the first time in a long, long time someone made the distasteful but ultimately sensible choice.

Can you imagine how genuinely terrifying a psychological horror film would be where the killer/psycho genuinely outthinks their prey at every turn? Not plans which require 'and provided they're a complete idiot and sprain their ankle here, here, here or here, should come off without a hitch! SPIFFING!'

So much more interesting. Which is also why I like Cabin in the Woods so much. It plays up to the tropes, but also thumbs it's nose at them in a glorious smorgasbord of utter nonsense.

The Descent, being a bit claustrophobic that movie was extremely unsettling. It gave my girlfriend nightmares for weeks and as a result I was subject to many random revenge punches from her every time she flinched while thinking about it.

Still not watched Cabin but that was a brilliant moment in WD - shame it was so rare especially as it continued. I remember Joss Whedon talking about Buffy and saying similar things about not just wanting a show where the girl ran from the monster but actually turned round and kicked its ass.

I really liked this one as the girls were not just helpless victims being chased by monsters - well not all of them - the sequel was not too bad either.

JC's The Thing and the Prequal had loads of tension as others have said because it appeared that not even those infected knew they were (maybe? Sometimes - Apparently even the cast discussed this and what would you do if you thought you were)

The Descent is definitely up there, as is Neil Marshall's besterest film in my opinion - Dog Soldiers.

Often referred to as a 'horror-comedy', I prefer to think of it as simply a Very British Squaddie film. No giving up. Minimal freaking out. Nobody dies without going out swinging.

Such a refreshing change to the 'oh man oh man oh man we like can't kill it man NEW TROUSERS, MAN' of fare in the same genre.

And sure, I said 'a very British squaddie' film, but I like to think that any professional soldier in the same position would react much the same. Spesh the bit in the Land Rover, which is just glorious!

Lots of great films recommended already. I'll add a few that haven't been mentioned yet.

In the Mouth of Madness, starring Sam Neil, is a great scary movie from the mid 90's. What is real? What is madness? Very obviously Lovecraftian

Oculus is a recent one starring Karen Gillian (of Dr Who). A supernatural evil that can control your senses.

On the flipside, one that came highly recommended was The Babadook, and while it is a well acted slow burn, it ultimately failed to satisfy me.

I'll stick with some more recent ones as the classics already have tons written on them:

IT: Great film interpretation. Kind of a similar vibe to Stand By Me but with an interdimensional monsters, which is a good thing. Hope the next installment keeps it up.

Happy Death Day: Wasn't expecting much, but a very fun Groundhog Day inspired movie. Rothe gives a solid performance and the movie is surprisingly upbeat, with tongue firmly in cheek.

Jigsaw: Do you like the Saw franchise and it's overly convoluted interlinking and questionable moralism? I don't! Good thing this movie strips it down and tells a pretty straight forward story of a warped vigilante imitating Jigsaw to torture and kill some bad people with improbable kill devices. Expect tv drama level dialogue and you won't be disappointed!

The Snowman: More suspense then horror. Killer kills women and builds snowmen. Convoluted red herring story, terrible dialogue that tries to be super serous and mysterious but is just all around painfully slow and boring. The only tension is when the movie will finally end.

Leatherface: Dumb chainsaw massacre origin story. Doesn't really make any sense, but lacks any visceral connection to power through. For a second, I thought they were going to do something clever, but nah, it's stupid all the way down. Probably would have been better off just remaking the original for the 1000000th time.

I fell in love with A Dark Song last year. I watched it a few times since. Its a slow burn, and kind of boring in places, but I enjoyed it. Its not a full on “horror” movie until the end, then the ultimate climax of the movie was like nothing I’ve ever seen in recent memory.

Blair Witch gets a lot of crap, but that film was a masterpiece for what it achieved. It's the ultimate "never see the monster" film. With my imagination, the tent scene and the corner scene created whole worlds of horror that some slasher film could never reach.

But if we aren't sticking strictly to newer, scarier stuff, I have to recommend Tremors (and part 2) and Critters.

I really liked this one as the girls were not just helpless victims being chased by monsters - well not all of them - the sequel was not too bad either.

Agreed on the first. The lighting, slow build of tension as they realise they are lost and not showing the lurkers for so much of the screen time was spot on. The sequel was crap, in my opinion, however. It lacked any of the tension of the first. The sets were overlit, lacking any of the realism of being in an actual cave and the monsters shown way too early. It also retconned the actual ending of the first film.

The Collector
The Collection (dat opening club scene! )
Slient Hill (pro-tip, play Tool's Aenima in the background for ambiance... trust me, works great).

Also, for a true scare, I recommend Showgirl. Absolutely terrifying.

I'll second Midnight Meat Train. Superb primer for people looking to try World of Darkness roleplaying.

Silent Hill I enjoyed, and the sequel (albeit to a lesser degree).

The Relic is fun.

Watched Silence of the Lambs....good film, but I fear it's showing it's age?

Silence of the Lambs has not aged well at all. Well, not the parts with Anthony Hopkins, anyway.

I don't know if the Fly or the Fly 2 count, but they are both worth watching. The Fly 2 isn't as good overall, but that final comeuppance... Worth it.

I think SotL has suffered from being too iconic, too popular and influencing everything that came after it. It's like listening to Jimi Hendrix, unless you were there when it was new, it's hard to appreciate just how amazing it was without the avalanche of artists after that built on his genius.

I think Feeder has it mostly. It's hard to watch Hopkins and not subconsciously compare his performance with decades of parodies, homages, and more subtle, compelling takes. His acting also seems a bit hammy by today's standards. If the role weren't so hyped and iconic, it wouldn't matter, but if you go into the film expecting one of the greatest cinematic villains of all time you're likely in for some disappointment.

If it WAS a Scream2 reference, it was on accident. I haven't seen a whole Scream movie all the way through. I meant the ACTING in Showgirl is terrifying, and not even my infatuation with Elizabeth Berkley can get me to overlook it.

I enjoyed it well enough, but I feel the cinematography is what's letting it down all these years on.

You know how you watch an old Rex Harrison or what have you? You can tell it's a good film of it's time - but also that the craft has really moved on and improved.

Please tell me you mean The Shining with Steven Webber as the main character. The 4 and a half hour version. The one that didnt literally take the names and locale from the book, and absolutely nothing else. You know: the one that had ALL good actors, instead of the one that JUST had Jack Nicholson putting on a good performance.

A low-budget slasher (apparently part of a series) that doesn't take itself at all seriously, but has a good amount of gore and some really funny moments. I'd definitely recommend it.

Rose Red is was inspired by the same mansion as Winchester, Sadly, the Winchester Mystery House is less haunted and more of an example of what someone who is deeply troubled can do with a lot of money.

Frazzled: Did Winchester lean into the cheesy 70s/80s horror look that the previews give it?

In the Mouth of Madness is a really good flick too. I watched it because of the HP Lovecraft inspirations. Then I watched some youtube vids on its background and plot points and such and learned there was so much more to the movie. Watched it a second time knowing what the look for and ask myself. And in 2016 they found a new room that had been shut off after the earthquake that destroyed the top floor. Complete with furnishings and accoutrements- quite the time capsule!

Let us know how the tour is if you end up going! I have always found the story interesting, but very sad as it is basically a literal wall she built around herself after the death of her child and husband. It's the same problem I have whenever I see historic sites- I love the history but thinking about the human cost is always sobering.

In the Mouth of Madness (My favourite Carpenter film, and I'll lap up anything by him)
Event Horizon
Candyman
Videodrome (and most of Cronenberg's films)
The Wicker Man (original)
Re-Animator
Evil Dead trilogy
It Follows
The Wailing (shockingly great Korean folk horror which touches on so styles and tropes, and pulls so many rugs out from under you)
Hellraiser
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 (so wrong and yet so right)
Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Alien

And it sucked by comparison. And the third (which just came out, I believe) was a floating pile of dog vomit in a river of alligator piss.

For those of you out there who are partial to a bit of Lovecraft, I recently saw 2 films worth a watch.

First is a film called The Void (from i think last year), about weird goings on at a hospital, low budget, but very well acted and the kind of practical effects you`d get in 80's movies like "Reanimator" While not directly a Lovecraft adaption, it's influences are plain. One of the better modern horrors I've seen recently.

Secondly, I had the opportunity to see the HP Lovecraft Appreciation Society's adaptation of "The Whisperer In Darkness". As with "The Call of Cthulhu" its a black and white period piece that takes the original short story and develops it quite a bit. Superb cinematography, great acting and a truly Lovecraftian feel of hopelessness and dread ( and pretty well realised Mi-Go too)....probably because Sandy Petersen, who was one of the creators of the rpg was involved (or else its someone with a very appropriate name If you like Lovecraft, see this film!!!

The Void is pretty solid. Much like Cube, and other favourites of mine, at no point does the audience know more than the cast. That’s a nice touch that’s often lost in gorefests and what have you. Just creates that extra level of investment (nowt wrong with Gorefests though!)

Both largely enjoyable. Though perhaps unfairly, I found IT to feel like an extended episode of Stranger Things. Still highly enjoyable, but just not as good as Stranger Things.

Jigsaw? Well, I’ve always enjoyed the Saw series, and this is worth enough. Though here, I feel like those involved could’ve survived quite nicely if they’d just taken five minutes to think. They also seem to die in a narratively convenient order....

I haven't seen Stranger Things (and truthfully I'm just not interested in it) but I did see IT (2017) and MDG's comparison seems fair to me. For example, the setting of IT was moved three decades ahead to the 1980s. If the producers on IT weren't explicitly motivated by ST's success (I don't know the timelines) it's a safe bet that producers on both projects understood that 80s-centric faux nostalgia is currently doing big business. I don't think it matters too much that IT (the novel) came out long before and apparently helped inspire Stranger Things.

As for the movie itself, I wonder if it plays better on a small screen. In the theater, there were so many set ups and scares, all with basically the same structure, played back-to-back that the repetitiveness starter to undermine the tension. I enjoyed it overall but it's not a movie I can see making an effort to see again.

Manchu may have put his finger on what I was trying to convey.

With the 80's vibe throughout (not unwelcome), compared to the TV Movie version, this did feel heavily influence by Stranger Things.

Absolutely not a bad thing - ST is a superb bit of entertainment.

Filming on It started before Stranger Things premiered. The film had been in development since 2009.

While it's feasible that the creatives involved in filming it somehow saw ST pre release, and were so heavily influenced by it they incorporated ideas into the production, it's far more likely that they simply decided to update the time frame to something more contemporary as is frequently done with adaptations, and any currency gained by the surge in 80s nostalgia generated by ST is just a happy accident.

While they're both tapping into the same thing, it's really hard to argue an influence, other than from other, outside, properties that they share.

I just rewatched 30 Days of Night on Netflix. Been so long that I forgot about certain parts, was almost like watching a new movie!

Pretty solid vampire flick, up until the last 5 minutes or so. It suffers from all the other loopholes and problems of horror movies, but I love it. I will always remember Danny Hustons performance as the head vampire. The part where he unsuccessfully tries to use a woman as bait and is about to kill her, she begs “Please God”. His characters reaction was pretty damn chilling. And when he had to kill his wounded lady vamp sidekick.

I used to be bonus features/directors commentary nut, and during the commentary of this flick I found out how hardcore of an actor Ben Foster is. He had a minor, but crucial and disturbing role in this flick. Dude went balls deep to play the role according to Josh Hartnett and the main chick and he became one of my favorite actors after this.

Protip, lightning only strikes once. If you enjoy this movie and want some more, just rewatch it and avoid anything else in this franchise.

I feel the same way about 30 Days of Night. Really great vampire movie if you just turn it off right before the end. Ending is a bit lame IMO.

Ben Foster is a friggin awesome actor. Loved his character Charlie Prince in 3-10 to Yuma. Dude is a very under rated actor.

I know they aren't Shock horror movies (I loved house of 1000 corpses and high tension) but the 2 movies that still give me the creeps to this day are:
The Sixth Sense , and The Shining.

The atmosphere of both movies is just intense and the music and sounds in The Shining is so unsettling and perfect.

I actually find the Terminator to be a creepy movie as well. None of the others had that vibe at all but the first one just gets under my skin. I think its because no matter what, the 101 just doesnt ever stop, the way Reece explains to Sara in the beginning is spot on. It really gets me after the semi crash at the end, you think that definitely stopped the damned thing but nope, melted outsides and a busted leg wont stop it either.

I watched a movie last night titled "Caught", out of the UK and I enjoyed it.

Was an interesting sci-fi twist on the home invasion sub genre. The pacing was great, a sense of foreboding starts at the very beginning that only briefly lets up to introduce the two main characters and the dialogue was... strangely fascinating, mainly because of the sparsely explained foreign nature of the perpetrators and what they were looking for. Ending could've been better, I guess I wanted it to turn into a creature feature towards the end, or at least a "reveal" but it went low key. I think the directors/writers wanted it to be a bit vague, or the budget didn't allow it.

All in all, a fun watch.

edit* Caught(2018). The other movies with the same title name from 2015+ 1996 are worlds apart in plot.

edit2* Some trailer action in the spoils!

Spoiler:
