Post by: Syro_

Welcome to the 25th installment of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition!

This competition is all about terrain building, which you can probably guess from the title.
The League's aim is to encourage our fellow gamers/model-makers to kick it up a notch while building terrain for their tabletop, be it for wargames, board games or dioramas. We encourage participants to use this thread to trade ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback. Everyone is a winner in a League competition. Because, in the end, your entry is also your prize. The first place winner, however, will win another great prize. They will be named a member of the League of Extraordinary Riveters, a group of dedicated artists and modelers who put great effort into having their work be extremely detailed (like being willing to glue on thousands of rivets). The first place winner will also pick the topic for the next round and be judge.
If you haven't taken part before, check out the rules and previous rounds. (linked below.)

Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to the your terrain project, to compete with other modellers.

The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of skill, experience, ability, etc.
The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...

For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back! And to anyone competing for the first time, awesome! And welcome!

If you haven't taken part before, check out the rules and previous rounds. (linked below.) Also, they are a plain enjoyable read so you may want to check them out just for that reason. (I've read comps 1-18 so far)

Theme: For the War Effort
By this I mean, I would like all of you to make terrain that would somehow be used to strengthen, reinforce, or resupply a military force, and could therefore also be a target of the opposing force. This could be a a huge martian manufactory, or just a grot sitting on a pile o' gunz. A supply cache, fuel/ammo dump, or a fort. If Fango hadn't already submitted that sweet Tyranid spawning pool for Comp #23, that would work for this, since it's creating troops. A warjack being built/repaired in a building, would work. A super weapon being unearthed, would be great too. Use your imaginations and creativity, and impress us all.

I would like every participant to post their idea/ideas on this thread plus an explanation of why you think it fits the theme, for me to okay. (Honestly, I don't imagine not giving anyone the okay because I value creativity and looking at things in interesting ways a great deal).

Any scale and game system is welcome. The size of your piece doesn't matter and big vs small will be judged equally. The League wants you to push yourself to the next level in artistic ability and creativity, not size. Being that I don't know

One very important thing to do, is post lots of "work in progress" pictures on this thread. This will let everyone enjoy the process of what you are creating. The members of LoER, participants in these contests, and the Dakka community as a whole love to help each other and give advice. A huge part of these competitions are to help you improve as an artist. Let people enjoy your WIPs and give suggestions to make it even more amazing. Constant updates from all of us will also keep this contest easier to find, which will allow more people to come and enjoy everyone's work, and get more people excited about joining in. (If more people join, you'll be even more proud if you win against 20 competitors rather than 2).

Do not post your finished work on this thread They should be PMed to me for judging, but you can still feel free post your finished work on your own P&M blog if you have one (just not here).

Try to take good pictures, if no one can see how good your piece is, how will we know? After all the work you put into your piece, don't slack on the pictures.

Rules:

1. Talk about the competition. Make as many people know as you can. If you have a P&M blog, it's great to mention it there. I think it's a good idea to post you WIPs in your P&M blog as well as here, it gets your post count up faster, and will encourage the visitors of your blog to check out this competition. Just please make sure you mention regularly what this WIPs are for.
One of the best things you can do, is put the League terrain competition banner in your signature:
HTML code for the banner:
{url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/751255.page#9843787]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

2. The deadline for this competition will be to have your stuff in by the end of May 21st. That's a little over 13 weeks. If enough of you need extensions, let me know and I'll probably extend it. I know real life happens sometimes, and it can happen hard.

3. Your piece should be scratch-built or heavily converted. It's fine to use parts from model kits, and no wants to sculpt 10 little cameras or similar do-dads on their piece. Just remember you're being judged on your creativity and artistic ability. I already know you can put model kits together, otherwise you wouldn't be a war gamer.

4. Your model should be a piece of terrain or a diorama that can be used for gaming purposes. It cannot be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

5. As mentioned above: any scale, any setting, any game system or board game is welcome. Also any size for the actual piece you're making is great as long as you can photograph it clearly.

6. Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, P&M blogs, or jsut the straight up pictures, etc. As said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can. Ideally your PM will include Photos, a description of what materials went into your entry and any specific techniques used, feel free to include some fluff/background/context to help everyone fully grasp your piece. Though hopefully you've already shared all those things except the final photos on this thread already.

7. AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use LEDs? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this. This is very important, Another words it might not be the BEST model that wins, but the one that has shown themselves to have pushed that envelope. In every LoER terrain comp I've been a part of, I tried something that I had never done before. You'll feel great and very proud of yourself for having done it.

8. Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).

9. Sprue. Find a use for the often discarded wonder material and you will impress everyone. Sprue has so many uses and we're usually buried under it, so we'd all appreciate more things we can do with it.

10. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.

Overview I will be judging based mainly on creativity, artistic ability compared to your other works, following the theme, if your piece embodies the detail that the league is known for, and most of all if I think it's cool.

The Prize
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognized as a modeller devoted to impressive detail (or Rivets).
The Warm feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love and are impressed with your work. And as is league tradition, I will also mail you a small modelling/war game based prize as well, probably some stuff to add to your scratch building supplies or a small piece of terrain.

I think that's everything, but don't hesitate to ask for clarification, and remind em of things I forgot.

Subbed and signing up. I am not sure what I'm going to offer as an idea yet but I've a few I'm weighing right now. I will say this though- in this contest I'm going to go for 100% scratch built. I'm seriously intimidated by the idea but I'm going for it. I'm skilled at breaking and re-gluing other people's creations but I've never created a completely scratch built model.

Another thing I'm going to commit to- I will use my airbrush in this contest. I've owned it since 2012 and have never used it.

Regardless of how my model turns out, I'm embracing the spirit of the LoER to challenge myself and grow as a hobbyist.

*** time passes ***

Ok, here's what I have decided to submit for approval:

Spoiler:

The idea keeps morphing from a square to a circular base, still can't decide which, The model will be a scratch-built missile silo with a warhead ready to launch. I'll be flocking the base to match all my other 40K buildings. I want a staircase that will lead from the game table to the top of the launch platform. The platform will have strips to simulate support straps and be heavily riveted. The top platform will also be strapped and riveted to simulate plates, and depending on the doors I may build a bunker wall that will provide cover for infantry models. The silo doors will either be the "folding" doors that yawn open, or they may be the "slide open" kind that will be modeled inside the silo itself. The missile will be fairly large and I have no idea at all how I'm going to scratch build a smooth rounded warhead for it.

Just to note it right now, this is intended to be an IMPERIAL launch platform, not ORK, so clean delineation and sharp lines are a must.

****

Square base. 6" x 6". Two staircases (each on opposite side of the other). Open entry hatch into silo with ladder visible inside tunnel. No wall around launch platform, build railing instead.

I’m in.

It will be Necromunda themed, as that’s what we’re currently playing...so something for the Gang War effort! Just not sure what it is yet...hoping something in the Gang War II book will inspire me.

@Syro_ - Way to get that contest post up in record time! Please do PM me to let me know what you are currently playing, and what faction/army you are using...I’d like to theme the scatter terrain piece I owe you based on your preferences.

It's great to see so many quick responses and interest in the comp. Even more, I'm enjoying seeing all the creative juices flowing.

@Skalk and Cam, both your ideas are approved, and I can't wait to see what you make, and how your ideas evolve. And Skalk, it sounds like you're really living up to the LoER ideals of pushing yourself to the next level with making this purely scratch built.

@Fango: I'm glad you're doing Necromunda, it's a good idea and helps other people see that it doesn't have to be for a true "army" per say. I forgot to mention in the original post and I might have to go back and add it, but Those cool post apocalyptic stores Clanmac has been making would work great for this kind of thing too, since they're selling weapons, armor, etc. Also thanks Fango, I'll be PMing you to discuss my prize. I haven't had time to think about it yet

@Z-Ray and M0rdain: It's great to have you aboard, I'm glad you'll both be participating. I'd add you both to the list of participants.

Also, on an important note I'd like to bring up the discussion on my idea for the additional prize. A member here on Dakka helpfully pointed out to me that being that these contests are on modelling terrain and encourage scratch building and converting, offering old school marines might not be the most logical or appealing prize. Especially considering I'm encouraging all game systems to enter, so why offer something only one group of players might like. I'd really like for all of us to have a discussion on this, or if you prefer PM me with your preferences? Other examples of possible prizes could be a goodie bag of bits and scratch building material, or me attempting to scratch build something for you. Thanks to the person who brought this up to me.

I'm going to try and be more involved this round (been quite absent the past couple); be that helpful advice to contestants, helping as a judge (been a while since I've really stared intently at other's models), or even taking part (depends on how current projects go).

Syro, as to your prize discussion. It's your contest, you can supply as much or as little of anything you want. These contests are more about the taking part than the finishing winning. The actual prize is secondary to the fun and learning.

However, you want thoughts, so I won't entirely sit on the fence.
Common prizes seem to be custom terrain builds or piles of bits.
Personally, I like to receive piles of bits and I would tend towards giving out custom builds. I don't feel like I have enough bits spare to make an adequate prize, and I like to build custom things.

Don't feel like you have to give out a "worthy" prize. Give what you can. The winner already has a nice prize in the shape of something they have just built, and membership to the League.

Thanks for the advice Dr H, I know I don't need to give out a worthy prize or even any additional prize to the winner beyond what they already get just from winning, but after experiencing the amount of work people put into their contest pieces and seeing how generous people are in general here on dakka, I want to give a little something extra. I appreciate your opinion on appropriate prizes, as not many people have chimed in on that yet.

It would be great if you do have time to join in the competition, I enjoyed your work in the old competitions. And advice is always welcome.

I like a finished piece of terrain (to receive, or give), as I scratch build from card or sculpt most of my stuff...but if it doesn't at least go with the theme of the terrain the recipient uses, then it may not be that useful...hence, the reason I've asked for some input from Syro on the piece I make up for him.

Would you consider walls for a Roman Limes Tower acceptable?

@Skalk, You're fast out of the gate, and the plans are looking good! You're making the league proud with all those planned out rivets

@Maniac_nmt: From a little bit of research, it looks like a Roman Limes Tower is mainly a defensive structure built to consolidate territory, is that correct? Would you explain how you feel it would fit into the theme of this contest? If your tower is also acting as an arsenal/weapons stockpile I could totally see it working with the theme.

Limes Towers were forward stations/forts meant to observe the frontier and supply the army with information about incursion into Roman territory.

Roman doctrine was to learn where the enemy was coming through and fall back slowly stripping supplies from their foes as they went. Essentially starving their enemy to the point the Roman's could make them capitulate.

So a supplier of information and the first point to remove supplies from foes.

This evening I started working in plastic.

WIP tip- scrape cut edges. I always run a steel ruler over the edges of cut plasticard to scrape away the plastic that raises up and away from the cut. Scraping smooths the plastic flat and makes connecting joints easier and more effective.

Basic shapes cut out and arranged:

Temporarily connected plates using painter's tape:

Mockup of building:

I'd like to offer an acknowledgement of past advice that I've used in this project. From dsteingass - change blades frequently on my hobby knife.

So i have started on my high ground gun emplacement. Due to its high vantage point it gives a good line of site of the territory in front of it. Therefore essential to holding the teritory in that area.

@M0rdain: That idea looks equal parts epic and crazy, I'm looking forward to where you go with this. Out of curiosity, where does that angel/cherub statue originate from?

Outstanding start everyone, come on all you others, get it on, bring it on. Anniversary edition and all.

Me started....
One wall..foam core, PVA glue. Hoping that the hole is big enough for a landraider, measures 110mm H x 150mm W. Seriously thinking of working doors here.

I beams...Foam core, card stock, PVA glue. These are approx. 25mm H x 10mm W x 280mm L.

Looking forward to this....

I conquered a nemesis this evening.

WIP tip- circle cutters are excellent at exactly that- cutting circles. Worth considering if your builds involve portals and covers.

Mine is a drywall circle cutter and I used it on a scrap piece of pine (in this case my entire bench is scrap pine). I've pressed the center pin through a hole in the plastic and into the wood. The hole was pre-drilled in the center of the circle.

It took approximately 10 minutes of pressing and turning the cutter. I did most of my cutting on one side, flipped the plastic, easily finished. As perfect a circle as I've ever made. I bought this circle cutter at a yard sale with this specific purpose in mind. I'm happy with the results.

@Maniac: looking good! That's an impressive amount accomplished in one day. I really like how the stable looks. Keep up the good work. I wonder if Viktor_Von_Domm has visited this thread, he's done a lot of cool work in wood.

@Cam: I'm exciting to see how this progresses, because you never disappoint when you're building something. Thanks for telling us what materials you're using and what you're making with them. If a land raider fits inside that's a pretty big piece, but quiet small compared to what you're finishing up and about to start in your blogs

@Skalk: Congrtulations on that accomplishment, 10 miniutes twisting that thing sounds a bit tiring, but you can't argue with how clean and exact those results are! Thanks for sharing with us how to do it.

er....update from me...

so...i was thinking...war effort...well...probably something that would involve supplies...loot or something related to the both...

so i thought about boxes, canisters and suchlike...well i know how to do them with wood or PC or cardboard...that would be hardly a challenge...so what else could be in the spirit of challenges and scratchbuilding be?

well casting came to my mind...since i don´t have silicone...i used chocolate packaging material ... these lightweight plastic forms...golden or whatever ...filled them with plaster of paris...and currently while they have their flaws, the outcome has its merits...

i will hunt down more of these mold- like materials...and we´ll see where that leads to... if this works out, i make my own challenge that the main ingredient of my entry is casted plaster with the odd bit of detail added...

stay tuned...

@Vik: It's great to have you aboard! I like that we have so many long time veterans of LoER taking part. I'm impressed how nicely those pieces you cast from chocolates molds came out. It reminds me of how I used the molded plastic from advent calendar chocolates to make little green stuff fish, shoes, etc.

@boundless: I totally understand but it would be great if you do find the time to join up. It's also a shame that you're already so far on that cool grot gun store, since that would fit this theme perfectly.

Little progress....
Strengthened the frame. Glued stirrers to the internal foam core, once set and internal lined this will add considerable strength.

Oh yeah cut a few of the bases I will need...

Internal linings...

Made up the "steel" frame work...

So here I am,

Scale shot..

Keep it going guys and dolls.

@Camkierhi: Impressive amount of progress Cam, I love the look of the scale shot.

@Kestral: Any of those ideas would work great, Would you like me to add your name to the list of participants now, or when you finalize your idea?

@Maniac: Don't worry, still plenty of time. Would you like to go into more detail on how you're working with the skewers? You can probably already see why I brought up Vik for his knowledge of modeling in wood.

@Syro_ I am unsure where the cherub came from , as it was a gift to my mother in law, but she did not like it. Oh well my gain.

Made some more progress over the weekend. The platform has been added as well as other details like lights. And i have creted a gun for it, just need to think about what stats it would have. any sugestions?

The pencil sharpener was a great idea. I was doing each by hand with an exacto knife, which is quite slow.

Picked up an electric sharpener after using a small hand one and it works great.

Then the gatehouse. I am going to leave the rear open and sand some of the boards flat. That way we can set archers in it if we want.

The top will be a wooden palisade with timber boards.

One small suggestion: I'd cover the styropor with either filler or tissue paper...to conceal the bubbly structure...

Yeah, it will get some spackle or something similar to cover that. On the rear I have some textured vinyl, from Christmas villages, that I will use to have a stone retaining wall with some timber supports.

Upto Syro, but I personally have no issue Bobbuilder, You had a slight head start but that's not a biggy, time is always a flexible for us. You are using a few kit parts, but that is not against the rules, you just get more for scratch building it. And size wise, well I for one can't say anything on that score. Size is irrelevant. And lastly as to how much time you have, we at the rate you are working already on the project the 2 months you have is an eternity.

Truth is though, Syro has the final say.

Update coming guys and dolls. Keep it coming, all your work is amazing and so inspiring, got a real buzz here, wonderful.

Bit late to the party - there's some great looking stuff up here already - but I'm definitely in.
No clue what I'm going to build yet... Maybe a base for my Necromunda gang, or an Inquisition fortress/bastion for Inq28. Much thinking needed...

@M0rdain: I like all the additions and alterations you're adding to the cherub, looking great. As for the gun, I can't really tell its size, but it looks like it could be a battle cannon or an earth shaker. This is for 40k, right? I haven't gotten to play a single game since 8th edition came out, and I don't know the rules...
Battle cannon in 7thE is 72" range, S8, AP3, Ordnance 1, large blast
Earth Shaker in 6thE is 36-240" range, S9, AP3, Ordnance 1, barrage, large blast

Except for ranger, the stats aren't too different. Good luck deciding.

@Maniac_nmt: The brickwork on the gatehouse is gorgeous. Looks like you carved into single sheets of foam with a ballpoint pen? It looks like it took forever, but is well worth it.

@bobbuilder: Luckily Cam has already covered most of what I would have needed to tell you (thanks Cam!), Luckily size doesn't matter much except for time making it harder with time constraints. I definitely really like your theme and how well it fits this contest, because yeah, promethium is a major resource. The current deadline is finish by the end of April, thought competitors often need an extension, and the deadline is often pushed back once. What you have made so far is really epic, and I'd love for you and your awesome refinery to be in this contest, but I'm a little bothered by what looks like a month head start you have, and the advantage that gives you. I'll have to think about it, and probably check with more of the long time LoER veterans, though you already have Cam's approval. Also like Cam pointed out, Ultimately I'll be judging more on stuff like the cool cuts you did in the foam base for the waves and the barnacles you sculpted, than the epic structure you built from kits.

Also if I do approve this, I definately want to try to get boundless to start working on his grot gun store again for this contest if he hasn't already finished it.

@Apollinaire: Nothing to worry about being late, still a full two months to go. I'm glad you're in and I'll add you to the list.

@M0rdain: So true! What especially tickles me, is Cam and I both have a great deal of sleep troubles, but where the sleep deprivation makes my projects come to a screeching halt as I'm unable to concentrate and decide where I want to go, Cam continues to crank out amazing work instead.

@bobbuilder: Welcome to the 25th LoER terrain contest. I've heard back from most of the people I asked for advice and it's overwhelmingly in favor of you joining, which was the direction I was leaning as well. I'm looking forward to seeing your project progress. If you could start with a progress picture of how far you were around the start time of the contest, I would appreciate it. Lastly on a completely unrelated note, I found and read through your blog on the emperor titan you were building. It was really cool, and absolutely heartbreaking what happened to it.

Everyone, please be aware that it is traditional to start a project for a LoER comp after it starts. This is a one time exception. We all have to admit it does fit my theme perfectly, and will be fun to watch progress.

Hording is done on the gatehouse, and the thatch is on the stable:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/150/474587.page#9855413

I have a few remaining touches on the gatehouse, and some light sanding, and then it is on to the walls and some stairs. I debate on doing a small barracks, but that may be pushing it. We'll see what time allows for.

i'm in, I was going to enter the promethium rig but too much too do as there a lot of ideas to put into practice so decided to concentrate on the landing pad that's going to bring in supplies/personel etc, going to included a control tower, radar, crane etc, to start with found a very sad games workshop skyshield landing pad on ebay cheap which was getting cut up anyway, removed the hinges, top part of side shields and glued to side with a foamboard base, trims to be put on to cover gaps, some of the hinges I took off looked like hydrolic rams so used them on the landing pad doors

What do you guys think of the stone:

The gaps are a bit big between the 'stones' but once painted I think it should be okay.

Syro_- Nothing new to show re: this project, but I did use my airbrush for the first time this weekend and I'm very happy with results. Will get back to building soon.

Maniac- I used that stuff for Mordheim all the time and have always been happy with the results. For this competition though I'd recommend going all out and either carving stone from foam board or find something similar. But truly the most important thing that you can do is build a model that you are happy with in the end.

bob- wow. Very well done.

@Skalk: Congrats on getting your airbrush! I'm glad you got good results.

@Bob: Looking good, and keep up this great pace if you can

@Maniac: Looks good, and I see what you mean about the gaps between the stones. I'm not the painter most of the people here on dakka are, but if you're going with that maybe make the mortar between the rocks a noticeably different color or do a bunch of washes? Along with what Skalk said, I've seen pretty impressive brick style stonework using a ballpoint pen on craft foam, tho the more natural looking stone that you're already using does make more sense for the time period.

@M0rdain: Looking great, and sorry to hear about the airbrush trouble. I hope you can get back to it soon. Like someone said before, that cherub gun emplacement is so grimdark

Yep guys and dolls, the idea here is to draw inspiration and ideas from each other, not to show who is the best terrain maker. The hope is that everyone no matter if you are brand new or a seasoned old fart, you can join in and have some fun. One of the biggest factors for me is the self development, having a go at something you have never done before, Skalk is already ahead of me here because he is trying out airbrushing, thats a new skill to him, and a biggy at that, and he is trying it in our little competition. MOrdian is really pushing it with lighting and sculpting, I am so honoured to be part of this journey with them, and with the people here both old and new the collective skill level is through the roof. Don't you dare be put off. I never am, I look at something like Tek's wonderful work and think " wow, how the heck? OK time to push myself a bit harder..."

So keep plugging people, tons of time, you can still start and join in.

@Tek: Amazing work, both what you're making and how much time and work you're putting in. I love that you are building so much stuff out of polystyrene. Are you using paper towels to create texture on the lower rock faces? It sounds both awesome and exhausting to spend an entire holiday crafting. My back would be killing me

@Bob: That container looks great! A very nice build, you should be proud of yourself, I'll have to try to make one that good someday.

@Ruglud: I'm looking forward to seeing what you make, I've enjoyed your work in past contest threads that I've read.

Everyone, like Cam said, it's all about challenging yourself and bringing your work to a new level, not comparing your work to others. By far the best terrain I've built, has been because of the LoER terrain contests and the extra push and and fun I had working along side everyone. Keep up the great work all, I feel like everyone is bringing their A-game.

I've never tried anything so complex, but if you have some templates you can get pretty good control/shaping. I didn't back this, but it is similar to what I've done with metal rulers to get a 'clean' edge. I've also experimented with various fine grade sand paper to smooth things out.

@Syro_ : Yes, I use paper towels with pva for smoothing rock faces. Texture on it is side effect. After hardening, is lightweight and very strong.
After whole day my back say too(I don;t like it) but lucky, night of sleep help to next day.

@Viktor von Domm: I don't prevent dents and bumps to the foam, I take it as opportunity for visual damage on it. So i have less work after prime sculpting.
I don't start with final image of object.Have some visions and change it during process. So it looks like smooth process from start t finish.
And for perfect work - patience and precision is the answer. This is not the BEST shapes from foam I ever craft.
This is the best, to now(look only on your own danger)
Spoiler:

I think every dwarf lover fantasy- or scifi will melt from it.
This is greater earth elemental for my Kings of War force. But it looks "
fabelhaft" with any dwarf force. When I build it, primary target was - make something breathtaking, when you look on it from scale perspective.
Is " dwarf " tribute to Talos

And this is not final line for me. I only push frontier more and more.
For example something for my 40K squats force, full from plastic
conscript rules - mining robot with lasgun

And Squats Knight(need think special name for it)

@Dsteingass: hot wire cutter at 2010, last year I buy 3d printer, this year (this month) waiting for airbrush box, so I can safely spray my models.
every tool is powerfull for crafting, but with synergies combination, I move miles(km) forward.

And if you think is too expensive, guys, try live from eastern europe salary in country where you have west europe prices.
This is miracle, not my work. This is reason, Why i learn construct all from foam. Don't have money for plastic kits.
For me buying some expensive tools is sacrifice holiday at outland for few years.

@Maniac_nmt : I have no templates , only retractable knife, scalpel and hot wire cutter for fortress.

Awesome work Tek, that's huge!!! Good to see you joining!

I like your use of model train parts :nods: . I love the giant hammers btw.

@bob: That's really ambitious! The rails for the crane look great and I really like that container, nice use of parts to detail it up.

@OMN: I saw on Cam's blog that you've been thinking about making a giant factory, this comp is the perfect excuse if you'd like to join

Thanks @syro. It is indeed some more necromunda terrain - it's going to be a chemical factory and base for my Escher gang (in my head it's called Stimm City but not sure if that'll stick...)

Not in the pic, but the putty is on the two short walls, and one of the corners now, and the gatehouse has a first coat or two of paint, but you can get an idea for the layout:

I might not strictly use it with the tower, which means making a couple barracks, admin building, and maybe a storehouse. I need to make the 'barracks' anyways for my villa which has stalled out (servants quarters, might as well make a dual purpose building and save on extraneous stuff).

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe

There's nothing like joining a LoER competition to ensure IRL eviscerates my hobby time. I'm still in this but I'm modifying my original design. The missile launch pad will not have a missile in launch position. I'll be adding additional detail to it but ultimately it cannot be what I had intended. I've considered using a prefab piece for the nose cone but I'd rather stay true to the ideal of this build. I want at least one model in my collection to be 100% scratch built and this is what I'm doing.

Regardless of judging, I've already "won". I finally used my airbrush and my circle cutter. I stepped up to both of those challenges specifically for this competition. Since my first spray I've become confidant with my airbrush and will be revisiting some of my most recent Necromunda builds to add a center port with my circle cutter. I've also resolved a moment of self-realization- I'm not a scratch-build modeler. Once this is over I'll be returning to my regularly scheduled bashing of kits and gluing of random bitz. No loss of pride there, I'm extremely proud of the projects I've completed and appreciative of the praise I've received from my peers.

Back with WIP as soon as I have something to share.

@Apollinaire: Sounds like a sweet idea, I'm looking forward to seeing it as you create it.

@Mordain: No worries, there's still plenty of time left. Honestly I am a little freaked out how fast some of the people are flying through, cranking out crazy amounts of work. Maybe they're planning to be done early.

@Maniac: Wow! That looks so good all together like that!

@Skalk: Murphey's law does seem to lurk in the forums waiting for the worst time to strike. But you really have accomplished so much already. I'm really impressed how fast you've been improving with the airbrush. So true about how you have already "won". Like you and Cam (plus many others) have said in the past, these comps are all about pushing yourself to try new things, take a project to the next level. You have definitely done that.

Theme: Ork Luggaboyz Cargo Transfer Station.

Difficulty: I donated all my terrain-stuff to my friend's brand new game store, to help give them a leg up on the competition.

Rationale:

The problem of battlefield logistics has been in existence for millennia. All armies have to move supplies to the front lines. Whether dedicated transports, or more...jury-rigged solutions. Orks are masters of creative solutions to problems, and getting cargo to their waaaghs is just one more thing for a Mekboy to solve...

If nothing else, I've tried a number of new things now with this competition. I just bought a bottle of Gesso yesterday, and went to put it on without much success. I added a drop of dish soap to the Gesso/Water mix and then it went on like a charm. We'll see tonight how it dries.

Work has been extremely busy of late though, so I'm definitely behind. Plus we're finally getting snow worth skiing on.

That looks great @Apollinaire, that will look amazing on any board. I gotta say though when you said the 2 weeks on holidays I quaffed thinking "How's he gonna get that done before March 30th?" so checked and the deadline is April 30th I was rushing to get everything done this week! That's a load off!

My build work is pretty much done, although now I realise I have more time I may do a bit more but I think it's fine as it is. I've completed the base with milliput and covered everything in PVA to protect the polystyrene eggs and give some texture to the big cardboard one. I'm planning to spray this white and let the washes do some nasty work on it

Happy to be here can never really escape my spiritual home.

I got an amazing pile of stuff from Skalk Bloodaxe.
And a mate wants some sort of prison yard.
And it's his birthday the day the loer contest ends.
What could possibly go wrong?

There was plastic that yelled prison fence at me. Then, tidying one of the many overstuffed cupboards, found some crafting stuff, cardboard letters big and small. I saw a use for the D...

And with small crafting letters attached.

What better place to start a war?

Of course, prisons need a guardpost.
.
So I'm going to resurrect and fix this. It's made from cod bits, a beer drip tray, blister packaging and a smoothie lid. Never finished. Remaking an abandoned project? Never done that for a loer contest before. So why not?

And maybe a watchtower, but I've not figured that out yet.

I love it when a plan comes together

As you asked nicely Cam...

Some progress on my nodding donkey.

Made and attached the 'horse head', then made a pair of counterweights and attached them to a wooden dowel that serves as a power shaft and runs through the motor housing. Spent a few hours for very little apparent progress... The 'walking beam' is not yet attached, hence the black electrical tape acting as a counterweight to keep it in place for the photos...

Spoiler:

Next up will be the pitman arms and equalizer bar, then to figure out the well head... After that, I'll need to look at detailing (rivets mainly...)
and making it fit the Necromunda aesthetic...

For anyone interested, here's a couple of illustrations showing the mechanical parts of a pumpjack...

Have also started a new base for the whole piece. The pumpjack will be on a raised concrete plinth, with the well head at ground level - plan is to have a fence of some kind around the edge of the concrete plinth (safety first...), with some steps at the rear to access the building

Hello all! Really looking forward to seeing the end of this. I do not envy you Syro for having to judge this.

I've started slapping some paint on mine this weekend. Literally slapping paint! This is going to be a lesson for me in washes but I really hope it will come off well. The fact it's so alien I think I can get away with it, and I already like the overtly comic-booky feel that's going on. Anyway, this is probably the last picture I'll share as I don't want to ruin the end result:

Thanks boundless, I don't envy myself either When I won the last contest I didn't think being a judge would be nearly as hard as it is, despite all the warnings from past judges. Everyone taking part certainly isn't making judging easy, which is a good thing. I always enjoy the creativity you show in your work, I think everyone else here on Dakka feels the same.

The most I can extend it, and still have time for judging and to prepare and send out prizes would be 3 weeks, so the new end date would be end of May 21st, a Monday so right after a weekend. How does that sound to everyone?

Also no worries Bob, feeling under the weather really throws off wanting to craft for me, I want to be able to think clearly when I'm working, so I totally understand.

Plumbing supplies double as great terrain pieces ..... just sayin'

And, if this has been extended, then I may consider celebrating my return to Dakka with a small piece - seems rude to not join in current League shenanigans.... I'll consider what is viable and pass an idea on to Syro for confirmation if I think it's likely.....

Okay everyone, the end date of the competition is officially changed to the end of May 21st, I like seeing all this activity on the thread, thanks everyone. I'll go change the first post to reflect the new date.

@Ruglud: Wow, that definitely takes precedence. Good luck getting that sorted out.

@Monkeytroll: Welcome back to Dakka, it would be great to have you make something as well. I've also enjoyed past stuff you've made, when I've wandered through old threads. Let me know when you decide for sure.

@boundless: That's a hilarious and fancy title you've given me, especially despite being in the league I've only ever put rivets on a single single scratch built killa kan, unless you count the treasure chests I made as having rivets.

@Maniac: Yes, that would work great. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished piece.

@bobbuilder: Glad you're feeling better, and your work is looking good as usual.

Thanks for the submission M0rdain, and I know the feeling about wanting to get back to your army. Everyone works so hard in these contests, I had to drop everything else and devote 100% of my hobby time to my entries to feel I had any chance of winning or even just not looking bad compared to everyone else

I hope all these great submission keep coming, even though each one makes it noticeably more terrifying thinking about when I'll have to start judging.

I am working on an elevated firing position. Its for a narrative campaign and the local store had nothing that fit the story.

This is also my very first terrain piece. All suggestions are welcome!

Awesome Dwro1234, welcome to the party! And no worries, the first LoER contest I joined was after the original deadline had passed and I only had something like two weeks to make my piece. These contests really help you push yourself to a new level, that one I cranked out is one of my favorite pieces I own and one of the best looking, so I'm sure you can do it! I'll add you to the list of participants.

As for advice, it looks like you're using popsicle/craft sticks for floor boards? It looks good, but I'm curious how you're cutting them, we might be able able to save you some time. Viktor_von_Domm does a lot of great work using wood for these kinds of projects, if you don't see him on this thread, you could try popping over to his P&M blog for an enjoyable read, ideas, and you could ask him some advice.

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- LoER Terrain Contest #25 "For the War Effort" May 21st @ 2018/05/04 22:56:03

Post by: Dwro1234

Yes I am using craft sticks. I am just cutting them at random lenght with my hobby knife. Only the last ones in each row are actually measured. I will be using wider ones for "walls" that hold back the dirt.

I was also thinking about just building a pallet instead of using the metal one from GW to hold the ammunition cases.

I was thinking about using chestnut ink on the wood pieces to gives them that almost oak color instead of actually painting them. I figured liberally (and purposefully uneven) applying the ink directly to the wood should give a more natural look. Thoughts on that?

Any suggestions for barbed wire or concertina wire? I am thinking about using small plastic slinkies that are a little smaller than a space marine.

There is still a lot of cutting to be done on this piece, and I plan on getting a hot wire thingy next week. It is supposed to look like a hill that has been dug out to create this fighting position. The back part will be flat because this piece is only meant to placed at a table edge.

The -=]_=- Terrain Competition Thread -=]_=- LoER Terrain Contest #25 "For the War Effort" May 21st @ 2018/05/04 23:42:53

Post by: Maniac_nmt

Ink or glaze won’t penetrate where you get glue on the wood, so be careful if you want to do that. Wire can be done with picture hanging wire and a pen. Wind the wire around a small diameter, round cylinder. Wind it tight and close together and then stretch apart. Simple and effective. Also try multi strand wire and do the same thing for a slightly different look.

Really!? Well, I can see that from the other judges I suppose. I've always envisioned myself as the dreaded, nit-picking, moan moan moan, judge (the Craig Revel Horwood of Riveters)... maybe I should drop the disclaimer I put in front of my critiques... nah, maybe not.
Thanks to those that do think of me as an amazing judge then.

Well, it's been a while since I have judged. If you need another judge, or a consulting judge for second opinions, or just advice, give me a shout.

Thanks. I do keep making things in my blogs. They just don't always align with the competitions.

I failed - given my rate of progress, I'll need another month to just finish the rivets. This is a combination of small beads and some Zinge hex bolts - they look great, but so damn small and fiddly!

I did manage to install the well head though, plus add some new cabling, ready to be installed - idea is that this pumpjack is undergoing repairs by the gang who own it. Will be adding tools / toolboxes and thinking it may be undergoing a new paint job, so will have a dirty rusty side and a shabbily repainted side, with paint cans, rollers and trays...

Ultimately, I'll base this in a similar way to my 'old truck' terrain
Spoiler:

It will also fit in with the other terrain piece I started to build - a fuel refinery / storage tanks...

well.... i didn´t finish my entry...first i forgot to make any qualifying WIP pics....second...i lost interest in my project...at first i was all on flame for it...then it turned out to be the next inflatable dartboard... (75% of my projects tend to fall in that category...)

and this is even more sad...as i had a perfect new theme for the next comp already....

cheers, vik

Absolutely with Brian on this, no such thing as failed, all participation including just a comment in this blog is win for all. Ideas shared, experience gained, these are all that matters. The fluffy bit on top is just for laughs. Not degrading any previous winners here, just saying.

Gods my head ain't working right!

Brian and Cam said it best, and I agree. Congratulations to everyone that started. I'm also DNF but my launching pad will see life once I start modeling for Necromunda again. I don't know what it will be yet but no doubt something cool. Chances of it staying 100% scratch build are zero, but the end result will be another awesome model in my collection.

Well done to all participants. I came up with an idea on Saturday evening - decided it probably wouldn't get finished

These comps are all about the trying, the sharing of ideas, the inspiration, and the camaraderie. Finishing is a bonus, winning is a cherry on top. I don't believe I ever finished more than a handful, and most of those weren't 'finished' in my head, but stuff was made and the ideas flowed, and that was the point.

Having said that, I do look forward to seeing the completed pieces, and feel for Syro in the judging chair.

That looks like a great set up for a speeder bike chase scenario.......

Even better if it continued curving out of sight into a giant circle.

@Dwro1234: No worries, I hope you do keep joining these competitions, they are a lot of fun, great learning experiences, and you can get really hooked on them.

@Cam: That's wonderful news! With all you injuries, I didn't think you'd still be able to work on your piece. I can't wait to open the PM and check out the final pics

@Briancj: well said!

@Vik: Hang on to the idea, you've won plenty of times in the past, so you'll probably get to use it soon enough. If not, you can share your idea with the winner.

@Skalk: You're definitely a great example of being a winner without having time to finish. You tried out so many new things and left your comfort zone constantly. You most have learned so many new things from your experiments, that's definitely winning.

@monkeytroll: Thanks, I really didn't realize how tough it would be to be a judge. Thanks for sharing your kind and very true words with all the contestants.

Thanks to Syro_ for running a great contest that inspired so many one way or another. To echo the sentiments of others - the loer is about community, about friendship and shared challenges. You take from it whatever you want, and do as much or as little as you can.

Well done on all getting done. Good turn our.

Hope those that didn't quite finish get their's done in time so we can see where they were going.

Good work, Syro. One last push and you can relax for a while; not as easy as it looks is it?!

It definitely isn't! It would have been much easier if everyone didn't do such great pieces.

One quick question for past judges. Is it customary to wait to announce the winner until the public vote is finished, or can I announce it as soon as I determine the winner? I'm getting close, but it hasn't been easy.

Typically... there is no typically.
But, in the past (before the public voting thread trend) it was usually announced as soon as the winner was determined. However, with multiple judges, life and everything, it would often take about a week from end of contest to winner.
Voting used to be done via PM.
So compiling all the judging for the main prizes and the public vote took time.

With the public vote thread, I think it's usually all announced at the same time, to match the previous contests, and to wrap it all up together in one neat post.

But this is your contest, do with it what you will.

Indeed, atypical is the way of the League

I can't recall if you put a close-by date on the public poll....so that adds another layer of complexity...

Play it as you see fit, one announcement, multiple announcements, it matters not in the grand scheme of things. It is yours to do with as you will.

Thanks Dr H, thanks monkeytroll. I'll announce as soon as the winner is determined then. And thanks again monkeytroll, the poll closes in 5 days, but I kept forgetting to say the close by date in my posts, so I appreciate you bringing it up and reminding me.

Everyone the poll for your favorite League of Extraordinary Riveters terrain piece for the 25th competition closes in 5 days!

The winner of the 25th League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Contest is Camkierhi!

For second place there is a tie between Briancj and Tek Thornson!

Congratulations to our winners and to everyone who was a part of this contest. I was really impressed with all the effort each of you put into "For the War Effort", and was floored by all the new amazing pieces that will be gracing gaming tables around the world.

I can't stress enough how great all of these pieces were and how close everyone was in points on my judging rubric. Camkierhi, Briancj, and Tek Thornson all managed to tie with the exact same total highest score on the original judging rubric (although not all in the same categories), forcing me to actually add more criteria to narrow it down. Not a single finalist got more than 5 points below the original first place score. This was incredibly close. I hope anyone who hasn't gone over to show support for out seven amazing finalists will do so soon.

Cam, Brian, Tek: I have no idea when I'll have time for this, so it may be a year before you see it, but I'd be happy to offer to send each of you some kind of little prize if you would like one. It can being a goodie bag of stuff that might be good for making terrain, a piece of terrain made by me, something else made by me, or even a surprise prize. So let me know if you're interested.
