Hey guys, a few of you might remember me, but most of what I posted here is already lost in the thousands of pages filled with amazing content in this forum.
So instead of digging up old posts of mine I decided to create a single one that will get all my attention from now on. But first a bit about myself.
I've been on and off this hobby for quite some time now and what's keeping me around is the great models, characters and amazing background that they come with. I'm not just talking about the official stuff, I love to browse the web to find converted armies, self written fluff or simply amazing ideas. The only tabletop game I've ever played was the original Lord of the Rings from GW and that's what got me started with everything.
I've tried to get into the gaming side of the hobby but after numerous starter boxes and attempts at armies I'm deciding to let it go. Instead I'll focus on what I love about the hobby and stick to the sculpting, converting and scratch-building that I enjoy.
One of my latest creations was a custom true scale typhus that was almost entirely sculpted by me and it had been a blast to do so, the time that I worked on the model was during my last exam period (for anyone interested in pictures and progress on that, I did make a post about it).
Which brings me to my current situation. I'm currently studying abroad in Australia and it's exam preparation time. Which means I needed a distraction to get me through my long hours of studying, so I ordered a pack of green stuff and some sculpting tools and got to work.

Now with this wall of text out of the way we can start with the actual reason we're here. So let's start with a picture of everything I have here that I can work with.

As you can see, it's not that much. But I'm mostly trying to make a decent miniature and learn as much as possible in the process.
Which brings me to the next point. I've thought about what I wanted to create and one of my old lord of the ring miniatures came back to my mind. It was a dwarf lord with a one handed axe (I'll try to find a picture later), I don't know why I thought of him but that's when I decided I wanted to make a dwarf.
So here it is, kind of...

The pose I started with was pretty straight forward, nothing dynamic. To get to this point took quite a while and if I recall correctly it has 7 layers of sculpting involved.
1. sculpting the left boot
2. Sculpting the right boot
3. Sculpting the left trousers
4. Sculpting the right trousers
5. Sculpting the scale "skirt"
6. Sculpting the armor
7. Sculpting the little latches on the armor
Between each step I let the putty fully cure so that I wouldn't mess it up.
My next steps will be to put a skirt (I'm sure there's a proper word for this) on his backside and to figure out what to do with his arms.

And that's it for my first post. From now on there probably won't be that many walls of text anymore but I will keep you updated with a steady supply of pictures on the current progress. The dwarf will be my project while I am in Australia and once I'm back in Germany I have a few more projects in my head and lying around that I will focus on. I hope I got you interested and that you'll stick around to see where this is headed. I'd be happy to hear about any critique or comments you guys will write.

I'm definitely interested and will be coming back for more. You are doing an amazing job so far, and with so few tools to work with. It would be great to see a work in progress shot of each step during curing times. I'm looking forward to seeing the continuation of this dwarf.

Thanks Syro! I appreciate the kind words . I'll try to capture more pictures in between curing stages, if I forget to do it I'll still write the steps that have happened up to that picture.

I only have a small update today, I grabbed a small amount of GS and tackled the part that I'm most afraid of for this mini. The head. This will not be the final head, but I'll probably do a few of these in between making progress on the dwarf, it'll help me practice and hopefully produce a decent result at the end. I sculpted the head in one go, then let it cure before adding the hair and beard (as I didn't like the mouth area).
The second picture is another very small head attempt and some weapon ideas sculpted on a paper clip. I'm just toying around with ideas for the weapon for now, these would get additional layers of detail and final shaping if I'd use them.

And again, let me know what you guys think

I like the flow and texturing on the hair and beard. Which tool do you use for it? Also very impressive with the head, faces are a weak area of sculpting for me. I wish you luck as you continue to refine for the final head.

And no worries if you forget to snap a pick, it happens to me all the time. Sometimes you get in the zone and it's hard to remember to stop and document.

I made the hair by attaching smaller pieces of GS on the mini and then adding texture to it with my needle "tool". Pressing the needle in the putty a few times will give you a few rough hairs which I then split up into smaller sections until I was satisfied with the result. Hope this helps

Update time!
I gave the pose of my dwarf some thought and have decided how I want the right arm. Nothing fancy here, he'll just be having it hang to it side holding its weapon. Now as you saw before, the paper clip for the left arm broke off unfortunately. This means I'll have to attach a new one in the future, but it also have me more flexibility for its pose as I don't have to decide it yet. As the pose is quite static anyway I didn't want his left arm to be "active", i.e. pointing waving or something like that. I also didn't like the idea of having it fall to the side like the other arm, so I figured I'd give him something to lean on.
In comes my idea of a little diorama (if seen something similar done by scibor, that's where I got the idea). I've decided to place my dwarf on the head of a dragon, leaning against its horn.
The actual progress consists of adding the skirt to my dwarf, which took more than one curing step but mainly because I'm missing my clay shapers for smoothing, they're amazing for creating folds in clothing.
I've also positioned the right arm to its final position and gave it a thin layer of GS to make bulking it up easier.
The last step was to adjust my surprise egg base so that I could sculpt the dragon head, as well as adding the horn (which has a coffee stick in it for support). With the remaining GS I rolled out 4 balls to use as eyes for the dragon.

All in all these steps were done in two curing cycles, one for the dwarf and one for the dragon.
Onto the pictures!

And I have another small update for you guys. As I'm doing the sculpting as a break from studying I only get small amounts done each day, but so far I made at least a bit of progress every day.
Today I focused more on the head of the dragon and tried to get a general foundation down, I also fixed the eyes into place.
Next up is probably the weapon for him, I think it'll be an axe and I hope it'll look alright. Won't be many crisp edges on it with the tools I got.
Enjoy the pictures and I'll see you tomorrow with some more progress.

As always, let me know what you think.

Wow, I didn't know you were planning on sculpting so much of the dragon's head. Very cool. I expected it was like pictures where nothing but a single horn and a little bit of scales would be considered out of frame. I'm curious what style of dragon you're making, the eyes look different than I'm used to. As for the axe, I find getting crisp edges with green stuff hard since it stays flexible and a little rubbery, but maybe wait on attaching it and try fine sand paper on the edges of the axe?

Keep up the great work!

Hey Syro, glad you like it
It'll probably end up being the whole upper half of the head, but no lower jaw. Once I'm back in Germany I might sculpt more, or attach it to an actual base an blend it in (maybe sinking into mud). As for the style of dragon, I have no idea either . I'm just jumping in and letting my creativity go wild.
Concerning the axe though, I'm afraid there won't be any sandpaper. I got three weeks left in Australia and one of those will be only vacation with no sculpting. So the picture of my tools in the beginning will be all that I'll use for this project.

So hopefully I will get him done in the next two week.

Alright people! I managed to finish the axe today, it was basically done in three steps:
1. Sculpting the handle on a paper clip
2. Sculpting the rough form of the head as a foundation
3. Sculpt the final head

It's nothing to fancy, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
The next step is probably to tackle the arm holding the axe.

I also started a small project on the side as my girlfriends birthday is coming up. It's just some small stuff as according to her I only do "monsters and ugly people" (though to be fair she does like the dwarf). I'll reveal it to you on her birthday next Sunday, so stay tuned for that

And as always, let me know what you think!

And another small update!
Today I tackled the right arm. I started by sculpting the arm itself, then I let that bit cure and once hardened I added the hand and axe. The last step was to add the little arm guard which I left till the end in order to sculpt it a bit over the hand to provide additional support to it.
All in all I'm happy with the result, the paper clip in the arm was a bit of a nuisance, as I couldn't cut it off and it was slightly to long. I managed to get around it by cutting into the axe handle and providing a groove for it there. Though the inside of the hand is a bit rough due to it.

Next up will be my first exam tomorrow as well as starting with the left arm. I'll need to put a paper clip with the right length in place for me to sculpt onto (without glue, a drill or clippers). We'll see how that'll go...
Maybe I'll also get to finish my little side project tomorrow.

Let me know what you guys think!

The new arm and hand holding the axe looks great. You've really had to get creative from your lack of tools, but the final result doesn't show anything lacking. I originally thought the axe looked too long in your last post, but in its final position and pose it looks much more natural.
Good luck on your exams!

Thanks Syro! I have to say I was a bit skeptical about the axe at first too. In the beginning it was even thicker at the end, so I shaved it down a bit and then I was quite happy.
Believe me when I say that I thought this would turn out worse than it did when I first had a look at the tools. I actually had to sharpen them first to get rid of some weird edges (by using the bottom of a tea cup). Now I'm mostly using the third tool in the original picture. The spear like side is great for cutting pieces of GS off or making finer lines and the curved back of it is great(ish) at smoothing out the areas, especially smoothing new GS into already cured parts.

I'll post an update on the dwarf tonight. For now all you're eying is a sneak peak at my side project

I'm continually blown away by how great you're sculpting this guy, especially with such limited tools. I'm also taking notes on what you're finding useful, in less than a week I'm going to be in a similar situation to you, where I'll be attending school far from home with limited art supplies. I'll be sure to pack the tool I have that looks most similar to that spear. Keep up the great work, I hope exams are going well, and I'm looking forward to seeing the surprise side project.

Thanks again for your kind words, it makes working on this easier and keeps me motivated.
Are you planning on sculpting something while you're away? If so feel free to ask anything you want and I'll see if I can help you with it. Another idea for tools is to make them out of wood and the coat then with a varnish (nail polish for example). Haven't tried that myself yet, but I've seen other people use it. I found the most important tool to be something that is round (like a very tiny spoon).

But back to the dwarf! I managed to break a paper clip to the right size for the gap and glued it in place with some GS. A simple ball as a shoulder to hold it on one side and then I did the hand already on the other side. I used the rest of the GS to put a thin layer of it over the paper clip, as it's usually nicer to sculpt on that than the round metal.
Once I was happy with the hand I set it aside to cure (it does look weird right now tho ). Next up ia sculpting the arm, might do it bare this time to work on some muscles for once.

Let me know what you think!

And another update, I managed to finish the other arm. I think it turned out quite nice even tho it was my first attempt at sculpting muscles. The arm was sculpted in one go, but looking back I would probably split it up to do the chain mail separate.
Now all that’s left is some detailing, small fixes (I think his waist is to thin) and obviously sculpting the head. I might also give him shoulder pads, not sure about that yet.

Let me know what you think!

Wow, you are really moving! The muscled arm turned out nicely, impressive work as usual. I'm curious why the dwarf is missing all the gear from his one arm, is going to be that it had been ripped off fighting the dragon? Maybe there can be some blood and cut on the arm when you paint it?

Quick update!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hey guys. I apologize for yesterday, I didn’t mean to just throw pictures at you . It was already late and I was tired, but I did want to share my progress.
I bulked out the dwarfs waist a bit and then did quite a bit of work on the dragon head. Still lots to go but you can see the general idea now.

See you with more updates tonight! And let me know what you guys think.

And here is the promised update for tonight! I managed to finish half of the dragons head (except for snout details and back/ horns). I am quite pleased with how it turned out and am looking forward to sculpting the other half.
Just for gaks and giggles I picked up a black pen and colored in the lines and eyes, now I’m definitely looking forward to painting this as soon I get him done.

And Syro, I have to say I haven’t given it any real thought as to why the left arm is bare . You do have a valid point there though as it would make more sense if it had a reason..
Maybe I could add a bit of tattered cloth at the top and the story would be that it caught fire and he ripped it off?!

Anyway, I hope you guys like the pictures and as always let me know what you are thinking!

Oh and two out of four exams are done and I have a good feeling about them! So there’s that

Congratulations one the exams, and best of luck on the last two! The sculpt is looking great as always, I like the way you made the scales/plates on the dragons head, and I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but I also think adding those cuffs to the dwarf's shoulder chain mail looks really good, I wouldn't have thought they needed any additions. As for the bare arm, I know you wanted to practice sculpting a bare arm, and that's easily a good enough reason for it to be that way, but I jsut wanted to bring up the "why" as something to think about, you definitely don't have to make any changes, maybe it's just the dwarf's personal style.

Good spotting on those cuffs, I completely forgot that I did those
And for the bare arm I know that practice is a good enough reason, but I also want it to visually tie into the piece and make sense from a story point of view. So I really appreciate you mentioning it

I'll post an update tonight, probably progress on the other side of the dragons head.

Today I got the head of the dragon mostly done! I also gave him, another horn on his nose. All that is left are some teeth and I need to fix the spikes in the back.
The last picture is of a sneak peak that i thought of including. I have a bit of GS left over and thought about doing another dragon . This one will be rather small tho, it’ll hopefully fit in nice. Let’s hope that it won’t be to fiddly to sculpt

That new little nose horn is a nice addition, it looks good. You seem to have a real skill for thinking of little details that not everyone would think of. It really adds to your sculpts (both literally and figuratively). I'm looking forward to see what you accomplish with that little dragon you have planned.

Alright everyone, you get a big update today! I put some of the pictures in spoilers for you. As you can see below I finally got around to do more work on the dwarf, read the face. While trying to avoid sculpting the face I thought about other little bits and items I could add to him to fill some large areas. So I went ahead and sculpted a small hatched, a bag, a pipe and a small bird skull. Then, instead of working on the head, I sketched a few ideas for a shield and started working on that . Eventually I decided to make another head and it actually turned out quite well! I’m not to pleased with the mouth and I had to bulk up the nose a bit, but since I’ll be sculpting a beard anyway that wouldn’t be a problem. The last thing I did was to sculpt some teeth for the dragon and finish his snout with some nostrils.
My next steps will be to add the accessories to the dwarf and sculpt his beard and hair, as well as finishing the spikes on the dragons back. I’m not sure if I’ll actually use the shield I made, as it will make everything a bit cluttered.

Here are the promised pictures, hope you like them and as always let me know what you think!

And a special thanks to Syro, who keeps me interested and motivated for this sculpt! I really appreciate the feedback.

I think the face looks better already .

I'm glad to hear that my feedback is helping you.
Great progress once again on the dwarf, the face never looked bad, but you're right, the beard makes it look so much better. I really like the beard. How are you planning on doing the braided mustache? Also what are your plans for the top of his head, hair, helm, or bald?

@Syro: I guess you’re right about the face, I’m just a bit strict on myself. The braided beard was done by rolling out a strip of GS, attaching it to the spot where you want it to be and then carefully pressing in the pattern. For the pattern you basically do alternating diagonal cuts starting from the middle of the previous cut (I don’t know if that makes sense, I can make a small tutorial if you’re interested). And then at the top and bottom you create a little bead. And as you can see for the hair I did a bit of both

@Son of Russ: Thanks! Believe me neither can I, I’m especially looking forward to finally painting him

Alright, so it’s update time again! The last picture is the step before hair, I did the braided beard and if you look closely on his left arm you can see the remnants of his shirt (thanks Syro!). I also added the dragon for scale.
And then I went to work on the hair, I started with the bulk of it in the back. After an hour or so I went back to make his forehead slightly taller as well as adding the topknot.
I used some of the leftover GS to sculpt some wood texture on the hatchet as well as attaching his pipe next to it.
The last thing I did was to add a long tail across his back and start with the body of his pet dragon.

I’m really pleased with him at this stage, I’ll only need to finish the dragon and I’ll be done.

As always, let me know what you think!

And I think I’m done with him! I think he looks spectacular . Although I’m not sure if he’d actually be a dwarf, he’s standing 3,5cm tall. I can’t show you scale shots right now but he’s basically as tall as a space marine
I’ll probably do some small changes to him, such as adding a tiny bit of height to the small dragons head. But other than that I’m happy.

I’ll post some more pictures tomorrow when I’ll probably call him 100% done. I hope you enjoyed the progress and seeing the process of sculpting the dwarf.

@facelyss: it definitely is fun and challenging but also very rewarding!
@Syro: now I’m done with all exams, I think I passed all!

Alright, I swear this time he’s really done
After doing some minor work on the small dragons head I had a look at him again. And for some reason he didn’t seem quite finished anymore and I realized that his right shoulder looked tiny compared to his left (due to his new companion). So I quickly came up with a design for a shoulder blade (cookies to whoever guesses the inspiration) and went to work.
I have to say I’m happy with how it turned out, gives him a bit of a gladiator feel. But now I’m really done with him. I took him off his egg and he now sits on my desk making me happy

Oh and there not be much going on here until I’m back in Germany in roughly two weeks. Thanks again for all the feedback and I’ll hopefully see you back again in two weeks

I have some more pictures in the spoiler for anyone interested, but first let’s take a trip down memory lane:

This pretty much sums up the entire process of sculpting him. I quite like the layout of these and will probably keep using them for future projects as well.

But now to the final result! I hope you guys like him as much as I do.

I am looking forward to going back home (although my apartment is rented out for another month, so I’ll stay with a friend first). Been in Australia since February and while it’s a nice country the Uni kept me quite busy. Now at least I habe two more weeks of vacation and then it’s over.

And don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of projects to do when I get back home. I have some unfinished ones lying around such as a Fateweaver conversion based on the Balrog, Truescale Abbadon and many more in my head. Oh and I already have the shadspire box waiting for me when I get back, so there’ll be some painting on that as well.

I also started work on the wizard and all that’s left to do is to finish his hood and arms. The left arm will get a bit of fire in its hand

That would explain a lot! But don't worry I've been there too, just grab some putty and start pushing it around. You'll be surprised how quickly you can achieve decent results!
Although I have to say I don't think I ever used it to fill gaps

And this truly is the last update from Australia! I finished the mage and this now brings the group to three members. I quite like his pose and how the fire turned out. He doesn’t really have a left hand but I kind of picture him to be able to turn into a fire daemon. This means I don’t have to do a hand and I also have a few nice modeling ideas for the future

As always let me know what you think!

The fire looks good, and these models are impressively small from that shot on top of the coin. Are the meant for a certain game? And do the fit a scale of one you play?
Also congratulations on going back home, I'm looking forward to what you create from Germany.

Thanks Syro! They are quite small, I’d say as tall as a SM leg
They don’t really have a purpose, I had no game in mind and just wanted to play around with the rest of the GS that I had.

And now I’m back! Unfortunately not at my place as that is still rented out for the month. I did manage to make a supply run to my basement tho. I picked up some paints and most importantly sculpting supplies (I grabbed all the putty but somehow missed most of my tools).
I landed on Wednesday and had to go to work on Thursday :(
Nevertheless I have been quite busy!

Let’s start with an old project of mine that I found laying around, it’s roughly 50% done as only the fingers aren’t baked yet.
Again, this was just me fooling around trying out things for learnings sake.

Then my newest project which I have started last night at 2am

And since my buddy has ordered the shadespire box as well as the sepulchral guard here’s some unpacking, building and spraying pictures.

And finally, because I was so damn productive yesterday until 2am, the first of the skeletons is already painted! I’m not the greatest painter but I prefer the results to unicolored plastic
Spoiler:

All in all I’d say this wasn’t to bad for one afternoon of work

I'm looking forward to when you'll be 100% back home, but I'm glad you're finding time to do some much even with being back at work so quickly. Those little cloaked guys you made, really seem like they should be for a team based dungeon crawl, like Hero Quest, Gauntlet, or the like. I doubt you have time, but it would be fun to create something like that for them. The hand looks good equal parts creepy and cool. Reminds me of a combination of Pan's Labyrinth, and that character from Naruto who uses explosive clay. The second clay guy, looks robotic, I'm looking forward to seeing what it becomes. Nice job and the skeleton too. I wish I was as productive as you were, now that I'm studying far from home. I'm so tired and busy, and most of all don't feel any inspiration.

Don’t worry Syro, I’m not always this productive . But I do know what you mean, it seems you always have the best ideas when you’re away from your supplies. Glad you like the hand and yes a small scale game would be great for them. They kind of remind me of the wizards from the PC game Magicka. Who knows what the future holds for them.

And now on to updates! I have been quite busy again. So let’s start with the start of a true scale Abbadon conversion, seeing how he’s achieving more things now I thought it online fair for him to get his unique upsized miniature from me. The legs are obviously fixed in place but everything else can still be moved. I’m not to happy with the fist/soon to be claw arm tho, any better ideas for it? And what do you think of the general pose?

Abbadon:
Spoiler:

Our next candidate will be the not quite that robotic new guy from the last updat. I will give an old idea of mine a new shot, as the old one never got done due to massive setbacks (the picture isn’t even how far he got, he had one massive wing already sculpted too. Oh well...). It should turn at some point into a Khorne DP in terminator armor, inspired by KrautScientists Eternal Hunt (specifically his leader Lorimar). I just love the models and fluff that he comes up with! The last picture shows a scale shot next to my old versions torso, as you can see it was waaaaaay oversized too .

Khorne DP:
Spoiler:

Old

New

Size comparison

And then we also have another update from out Shadespire friends, now with the first of the stormcast finished too. I went with the classic gold and blue as I think it’ll look great on the table. Probably wouldn’t paint an army in that colour tho. The last picture is a, I think well deserved, scale shot of our little minions. Just to show how tiny they really are .
Shadespire:
Spoiler:

Minions:

And last but definitely not least I have finished the hand. I’m especially pleased with the veiny back and the face in the front. The fingers are alright, but not quite at the same level. I might slap some paint on it in the near future too, but I only have bone colors, no actual skin tones. Ah well

Hand:

As always let me know what you think! Looking forward to some feedback on my WIPs.

i'm hoping that cork is enormous, otherwise that's crazy how much detail you got on the hand. The daemon prince is definitely looking much less robotic, very sweet sword he's holding, did you make that? Also you are so right about those little guys you made looking like they are the wizards from Magicka! As for Abbadon, I really like how dynamic you made the sword arm. I'm don't know if it's just the picture, but to me it looks like he's pointing with his powerfist slightly to the left of where he's looking. I think it would look good if you could get the arm or head positioned to seem to be looking and pointing in the exact same position.
Keep up the good work

The hand is about 3cm tall, so not to tiny . The sword was carved out of plasticard, though I might not end up using it as I won’t be able to bake it. Abbadon is still in its baby shoes, neither the arms nor the head are glued in place yet. I mainly just stick them there so that I won’t loose them . I do see your point though, rest assured it will be changed.

Today I only have a small update for you. I started another sword for the DP, as I might need to bake it with the rest of the model. I’ll throw it in the oven tonight and then file it into its final shape.

The other update is more progress on the Shadespire war bands. I managed to finish the skeletons over the weekend, this means that for now only the Khorne boys are left unfinished. Unfortunately for me my buddy has already ordered the Orks as well...
Guess there’ll be more painting to do

I have good (or bad, depending on how you look at it) news! I have reached out to KrautScientist and he has agreed to work on my DP version of Lorimar together. For me this means, that I can practice working towards a specific goal and according to someone else’s ideas. For you guys this most likely means that progress on the DP will slow down a little bit. Still, I’m stoked about this

To make up for this, I started another project. This one has to be done until Christmas as I want it to be a present to a friend of mine. I asked him to come up with a few ideas for a board game (because he wants to create one with me) and he answered “chainsaw hamsters Vs laser dolphins”.
So I’ll make a little diorama of exactly that
This is only the early stage, I’m blocking out most of the space with aluminum foil in order to save on putty and also to reduce weight.

As always let me know what you think!

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2018/07/18 19:44:10

Alright, I managed to put in some more work on my little diorama. I think it’s coming along quite lovely
I covered the aluminum foil with a layer of milliput terracotta (it’s not that great for sculpting but it’s rather cheap, I’ve yet to try mixing it with GS and trying out then). The ground of the diorama was then textured with a simple stamp made from crumpled up foil. The dolphin got his fins and the hamster got a bit of bulk around his torso.
I think the hamster will need quite a bit of work in order to turn him into something that actually resembles a hamster. The dolphin on the other hand is already recognizable.

Now our little hamster friend will have chainsaws as his front arms/legs starting right at the shoulder with the mechanical parts. With the dolphin I’m unsure what the best way would be to add lasers, my ideas so far have been:
1. Lasers shooting from its eyes
2. Lasers mounted on his fins
3. Lasers mounted on his head
What are your thoughts on this?

As always, let me know what you think!

Very nice sculpting!

Perhaps the dolphin could have a harness with straps before and behind the dorsal fin, attaching the laser forward of the fin?

Of course, this begs the question of who put the harness on, but then again, who performed micro-mechanical surgery to install chainsaws on a hamster, I ask ya?

Following this with great interest!

Very cool so far...

For the dolphin, I would think either a harness with the lasers either side of his dorsal fin, or shooting from the eyes.

Hey insaniak, welcome to the party! Glad you like it and the harness is currently the most likely option.

I have a few more updates for you guys. I gave both the dolphin and the hamster a first layer of bakable putty and then started working on our hamster friend. Definitely happy with how he’s looking so far, quite a bit more like a hamster I’d say. He’s still far from done though and not yet baked. The face is only roughed in and the fur still needs finishing touches as well.

Hey guys, quick update. It’s not really anything I did but I just had to share it.

My personal winner of „Not my f****** job“ for not ringing the doorbell when delivering packages goes to the person who delivered my Matte Lack spray! Im sure the 35 degrees blazing sunshine were no issue at all for it

Anyway, work on the hamster is slow as the putty almost melts off the armature with our current tropical climate here in Germany. I did receive some skin tones though so I’ll probably get around to finishing the Khorne band for Shadespire soon.

Alright people, I have a question and a tiny update. I got out my Abbadon mini again and tried to work on the claw arm as I'm not to fond of it. I tacked on a few Space wolve arms to get a feel for a few poses. Which one do you guys like best? The first picture is the inspiration for this model, maybe a pose like that would work better? Or go back to the second picture and the riginal pose I had in mind?
I did find that cloak too and I really love it, so that will probably stay

I like the art you used for the original concept, his pose screams "come at me bro".
I like the look of the bigger sword, and my favorite pose and weapon combo is the 5th to last picture. With the claw raised like that the whole pose looks very dynamic to me.
I'm looking forward to your continued progress.

I like pose 1 best I think, followed by the original artwork pose. Either sword works for me, feeling the smaller one slightly more, but there's not a lot in it.

Alright, so I know it’s been a while... but I’m still alive and kicking!
Just had lots of other projects going on (carved a wooden elephant and a heart thingy, I’d be happy to share those here as well but not sure if they would fit). Anyway, my focus now has returned to good old Abbadon and I’m pleased to say I made some progress. I played around with his arms and finally got a setup that I’m quite fond of, furthermore I pretty much finished his claw (besides touch ups and details) and found something that works nicely on his chest. Obviously he’s still far from done as I need to add tons of details, bulk out the right upper leg, make a cape (similar to the Space Wolves one) and I guess that’s it already .

Enough writing though, enjoy the pictures!

The touches around the head area certainly look cool, but it does feel weird to hear Abbadon won't have his iconic topknot in the usual manner. The model is really coming along nicely, and you have posed him great. I especially like how you chose to make the power claw.

First of all, thank you all for the kind words!
I know his topknot is iconic and pretty special to him, but I'm not to fond of the look in general. Plus in this case I would have to remove much of the armor surrounding his head in order to fit a topknot.
I finished bulking out his other thigh and got around to do some detailing on his left leg, not sure how I feel about it yet tho . The other thing I got around to, was finishing up the teeth around his head with an additional layer of GS in order to smooth them into the armor. Last but not least I drilled some holes for the next steps of decoration, iincluding the start of his topknot on his armor, as well as pinning the arms in place.

Steps that are left:
1. Finish decorating his armor
2. Add a loincloth
3. Add a cape
4. Finish his topknot and top armor decoration (trophy spikes and the likes)
5. Profit?

As always let me know what you think!

Honestly, I don't like the look of the topknot either . It is the easiest way to recognize a model as Abbadon, unless the arms have fallen off. Really nice work on the teeth, they look so good. I also really like how the left leg looks. I think it looks awesome and am tempted to copy it in something I make in the future, but I'm not sure if it matches the chaos space marine style, is that why you said you weren't sure how you feel about it? Keep up the beautiful work!

We’ll I guess I’m getting quite a bit done lately. Here’s another update for you guys!
I’ve bulked out and somewhat smoothed in all the horns that I added. As you can tell, his right leg now is inhabited by a plague bearer. It kind of happened and I do like it, although the teeth are still missing, I’ll probably through in a nod to each of the four chaos gods. I’m thinking a loincloth made out of skin/faces for slaanesh, “just” skulls for khorne and I’m unsure about tzeentch yet but probably feathers or a bird skull (maybe as a shoulder pad?). Other than that I’ve only added a bit more detail to his left leg. I need to dig out my tentacle maker to make some cables for his chest, probably at the weekend

As always, enjoy and let me know what you think!

Thanks! I hope the topknot on the armor will look better and still serve to identify the model as Abbadon.
For now I have just added some teeth to our friendly neighbourhood plague bearer and startet with the foundations for the loincloth and the topknot.

Enjoy

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And another small update for all of you. While the loincloth might seem a bit chaotic right now that’ll hopefully be sorted out once I add „string“ to connect all the faces. I’m not to fond of the hair as of yet so we’ll see if I can improve it or if I scratch it and try again.

Although it does look better in person and I think once painted it will be quite alright. But boy oh boy was that a lot of work... Alright people, I might not have been super productive lately but I haven’t been idle either. I managed to get some holes into good old Abby and found a few spikes and heads that could work as a nice trophy rack. I’ve also added his topknot and carved down his cape. All in all it’s not that much, but at least it’s progress.
Is the top getting to crowded now? Would it be better without the trophies?
Oh and I apologize for the crappy pictures, I’ll take proper ones soon when it’s not the middle of the night

And as a small extra I found an old model of mine. So for all of you that think my GS skills are way to good, keep in mind I started small too. This is an old version of Typhus that I started:

And this is the new version in comparison (there’s more pictures in my gallery):

Practice makes perfect! So just keep going at it

Everything about 40k is over the top, so I'm personally in favor of the crowded trophy rack. Even on the beginning you were good with green stuff, but wow such improvement since then

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2018/09/20 07:53:01

Post by: Pneumo

Well making myself an epic Abbadon takes quite a while doesn't it?
One reason might be that I'm trying to build him while at least somewhat remembering that at some point he shall be painted. I made the "mistake" with Typhus by attaching his cape right to him. That way it will be horrible to paint anything on the side and the back, legs etc.
My solution? Make a detachable cape, takes a bit longer though. Right now it fits nicely and is getting is wolf pelt on top

As always let me know what you think

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2018/09/20 23:05:25

Post by: Pneumo

And we’re slowly getting there. I bulked our the wolf pelt some more and added some tubes to his torso (as I finally found my tube tool again). Last things to do is to finish his trophy’s, smooth out the cape and then a few details and smoothing in some areas.
I’d say he’s almost done

Now while I do have quite a few other projects laying around I do feel like starting another terminator. I simply love the model and the idea behind true scaling. The added bulk really makes them stand out and even more intimidating.
So here’s the deal, I myself have an idea for a word bearer terminator but what will be more interesting for you guys is my offer:
Inspire me. As simple as that, if you come up with a cool looking character and can convince that it would be a blast to create, well then you might just be in luck. I’m obviously chaos focused, though that doesn’t mean I won’t do a loyal one (in fact most of mine started with a loyalist base ).
I can’t promise you how quickly I’ll manga to finish the model, but once done I’d probably part with it for a fair price too. So inspire away and we’ll see what I can do in the end

But for now more pictures!

Post by: Syro_

This is looking great! Congratulations on getting so close to finishing. What method are you using to make the cape detachable?
As for suggestions on what to sculpt next, it would be a huge time expenditure, but it would be pretty amazing to make a custom chaos lord in terminator armor for each of the chaos gods.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2018/09/22 17:44:59

Post by: Pneumo

So a Khorne Lord would look a bit like this?
Khorne Lord:

I think I like the pose, weapon and head. Now all that's left to do is to scale him up Maybe I'll even keep him as a fallen wolf.

Another chap I dug out again is this Alpha Legion Marine that will join the group of terminators. I'm thinking they will form a special tactical unit for Abbadon. Some kind of elite forces for impossible missions.
Alpha Legion:

And last but not least our friend Abby himself, now with an added trophy rack. I did glue it in in the end but the cape is still lose and can slide into the back.
@Syro: Regarding your question. For the cape I simply made a big GS cape and just lightly put it in place, this way I could easily detach it in the end. For the wolf pelt I tried out sculpting it on tin foil and it worked surprisingly well, afterwards you can take the foil off the cured GS too.

The „gold“ is actually about 3 coats of Vallejo bright bronze straight from the pot. Unfortunately I don’t any gold
The only thing I have in steady supply is my sculpting materials, everything else is just leftover from years ago.

Well he’s not quite finished yet, but I did clean up all the black areas including the shoulder pads. The question is wether to keep him shiny black or matte black?! Anyway, here are the new pictures!

So over the last two days I’ve actually started a new Projekt again... but this time I have actually finished it as well! (Though I did scrap that lizard thingy..) I’m currently trying to improve my sculpting skills and therefore I went on a wild image hunt on google, I saved a few creatures that I really liked and am now using those as inspiration for future sculpts to improve.

First up was a concept that would let me practice sculpting cloth, especially the folds that come with it. That’s basically all it is though. I’ve looked at plenty of nazgul pictures and miniatures for references and am quite happy with the result. The mini was sculpted in one go (no baking or curing in between steps) and is now finished. All that’s left to do is to slap it in the oven and bake it, hopefully it’ll stay in one piece... the only thing left afterwards is a bit of sanding on the knives to give them a sharp edge.

Anyway, enough words, here are some pictures. I’ll call it a nightstalker and I really love how it turned out!

Inspiration: Note that this isn’t my picture, I found it on google and thought it’d make a cool mini.
Spoiler:

And last but not least a quick scale shot with a snapfit marine.

The night stalker looks great! I want to be that good at sculpting robes and cloth. Abbadon's additional paint is looking good too.

Hello all of you!
I went home over the weekend and didn’t bring anything to do. I did however find some old sculpting tools of mine that I never used. And since I wouldn’t use them the way they were, I decided to just grind away at the, and see if I can’t make them useful. The results are below, I’ll try them out this week and let you know how they are now.

@Syro sculpting is just a matter of practice. I’ve seen the things you do in your blog and you aren’t so bad yourself. Quite a lot of nice things to find there, especially with more unconventional methods.

Thanks Pneumo, and yeah I feel I'm much better at making things in unusual ways over straight putty. I'm looking forward to hearing how those tools work for you.

Well, I've already got two favorites among my new tools.
The first one is this:
It's round on the top and then slightly rounded on the inside as well. It's absolutely great for smoothing new clay as well as getting the overall shape of the areas done. In general I feel like I might use this for about 95% of any mini. The example below was almost exclusively sculpted with this.

The second tool I quite like is this one:
It's not as versatile, but it works well with smoothing out areas that are hard to reach. It's just a bend cone that's rounded at the end.

I've put the nightstalker and another monster (I'll show you pictures tomorrow) in the oven but haven't checked on them yet as they need to slowly cool down back to room temprature. Meanwhile I've started a new monster to try out my new sculpting tools.
Right now it will become a dog like creature that's just lying around, but we'll see what I will turn it into in the end.

as always enjoy the pictures and let me know what you think!

That's great that some of the new tools are working so well for you.
You're new sculpt reminds me a lot of the monster from "Stranger Things"

I just googled it, I suppose it does look a bit similar although I haven’t seen the movie or the monster before. It’s a tad Moreno human looking, at least proportion wise.

The two baked sculpts came out really well, I’ll post the pictures tonight.

oh wow, yeah, I don't even remember the human looking one in the series even though that's what all the pictures are of. I searched a little bit too, to find the right search terms. looks like "Stranger Things demogorgon dog" is the best search to see what I was talking about (if you're still interested). I'm looking forward to seeing the too sculpts now that they're bakes. I'm glad they came out well.

Now that does look almost like mine
The only difference I see is the longer tail on mine and that the mouth on mine is only split into two halves. Other than that it’s really quite similar. Good spotting

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alright, I have promises to keep! The nightstalker was baked along with another mini, which I call deadly ball of fur and they both came out really nice. This time I had no issues with cracking or other shenanigans. The trick seems to be to let the minis sit in the oven and slowly cool down back to room temperature. The only issue I had was that a piece of the Nightstalkers left dagger broke off, so I had to reshape it a bit. Still looks fine to me though. All in all I'm really happy with the results.

Nightstalker:

Deadly ball of fur:
With this little fella I had a bit of fun, my goal was to test out the clay a bit more, especially in regards to really thin pieces (like the teeth). It went well while sculpting but he already lost a few teeth after baking as they are really thin and fragile. In the future I will probably sculpt the teeth out of green stuff and add them in either before or after baking. I'll have to see what works best.

I did some more work on my "demogorgon dog" as well, but not enough yet to justify uploading more pictures. He's coming along nicely too.
Last but not least I have ordered myself some more sculpting supplies, including a new clay I want to try out as well as some simple casting supplies. The clay should arrive rather soon while the casting stuff might take up to 20 days :(. It's probably for the best as I have exams coming up anyway.

That's all for tonight, as always let me know what you think!

I have finally finished my own personal Abbadon and I really love how he turned out
While I was making him I learned quite a few things, for example that I absolutely hate black armor and the grey edge higlighting that comes with it.

Compared to the last version you guys saw I have mainly added more details, painted the cloak and base as well as redoing the sword. I really like the way it looks now. I thought I'd create another collage just like I did with my dwarf. I think it's a great way to show the time it took to finish this model. I only have two regrets with this miniature:
1. Seeing the finished pose next to the "come at me bro" pose on his left I kind of feel I made a wrong choice for the final one.
2. As I'm not into playing 40k at all I'm afraid he will never see any real action and just collect dust standing around.

But all in all I'm very happy with him and I'd love to hear what you guys think about him!

And because I have finished one thing, I thought I'd start a new project as well. I'm not sure if I will get it done in time but I'm planning to sculpt a figure for the monthly painting challenge (Into the breach). I'll give you an update on that later today or tomorrow, depending on how quick I can make progress on it.

@Syro: Yeah I'm starting to get really attached to the dog as well, it's a shame it is supposed to be a corpse on a base for a bigger creature . I might make a standing one at some point in the future though

And here’s the promised progress on the breacher for the painting challenge. I won’t actually submit him until I’m done sculpting, but I’ll keep you updated here. Right now he’s obviously nowhere near being ready to see some paint, but at this pace I should be able to finish him by the end of the month (including painting hopefully).
It’s only roughed out shapes for now, the only thing with a bit more detail is his lower right leg, I’m starting my way down there and moving upwards. Right arm will be getting more tentacles, we’ll see how I’ll do that, not sure yet.

Let me know what you think!

@Wirecat: Thanks! Glad to hear you like them

Due to exams coming up I’ve only managed to make a bit of progress. I sculpted the right upper leg and that’s about it. He’s slowly getting there though and I thought it might be interesting for you guys to see how much I sculpt in each go. Although this is an oven bake able putty, so it’ll stay soft until baked anyway.

I hope you guys like where this is going. As always, let me know what you think!

And a ton of pictures for you guys! It might not look like a lot has happened, but I'm slowly getting there. I kind of don't want to sculpt the left leg, especially the foot
The last two pictures kind of show how I go about adding volume to the model, it's mostly in small strips of clay which will then get smoothed into existing clay. I like where this is going!

Alright folks, I have made some more progress on the breacher. I bulked out the left arm and added a bit of detail to the chest. You might also notive the new sexy left foot, maximum effort!
He's coming along nicely and should be done in time. I have one more (well four in one) exam on friday, then I can commit fully to this. I'd love to get some feedback on him though

I've also dug out another chap of mine, a Sigmarine possessed. Added a few details to him and will start painting him soon, probably Word Bearers.

Well I decided against sculpting him in one go and threw him in the oven after the last stage. Should be a bit easier to continue now as I don't have to worry abouut smushing detail.

While he was baking I cleaned out and organised all the bits I have flying around, it's quite a bit. And since I have also ordered some resin I thought I'd to a quick test of a fallen marine on a base. I just tacked him together and then but blue stuff over him to get a mold, then the resin was poured in. I'm really happy with the result (just gave it a wash so it is more visible) and I think I will use this quite often now.

As always let me know what you think!

Since studying for exams is overrated I got in a bit of time to paint! The breacher is slowly coming along too, it went through baking just fine.

I‘ve painted my possessed as a back up for the painting challenge (though I do still intend to enter my sculpt) and am quite happy with how he turned out. More pictures to follow. I‘ve also had a chat with a cousin of mine who’s a 40k enthusiast as well and offered to create a mini for him. So he send me a bit of fluff along with his ideas and a color scheme. It’ll be a hombrew loyalists chapter, the Imperial Judges, successors of the Imperial fists. Paint scheme is black armor, gold or yellow shoulders and red trim. So I‘ve done a quick test mini.

And since I had Abby standing around and the finished possessed, I wanted to show you guys just how small the snapfit marines really are. Or rather how massive my conversions are.

As always enjoy and let me know what you think!

And I did a quickly Test model for a color scheme that I could use as my warband facing off my cousins imperial judges. I think I like the bone colored armor, not entirely sure how I feel about red (or colored in general) shoulders. Any ideas on that? I might also go with a lighter shade of gold.

I like the dog creature - it has pathos. I think you should do a figure standing over it - kind of a diorama.

Well, had my last exam today and it went alright. So to celebrate I did a bunch of painting on snapfits to test color schemes and put in some more work on my breacher.
Pictures say more than a 1000 words and you can see I made him extra special

Enjoy!

Spoiler:

Seriously though, I think the head is hilarious. Obviously it won't stay this way... But I couldn't resist
Only the head and a bit of touch up is required to get him ready for painting, staying on track here.

@kestral: Thanks mate! Glad you like it, the diorama was the idea behind him. I plan on sculpting a bigger creature over him! And forgive my ignorance, but what is pathos?

And I had some time for more painting while my breacher was being baked. Today I present to you my Alpha Legion color scheme. I really like how it turned out and this might be the one I’ll be using for my chaos warband
Enjoy!

And I also converted a Chaos Cultist into a special ops Alpha Legion affiliate. Basically just gave him a sniper, I wanted to have some cultist for scale next to the bigger marines.

As always, let me know what you think!

@Syro: I have thought about making a mold and cast of the dog so I could use it for both. It’s just not getting a lot of love right now due to me putting the breacher first. And I’m glad you like the head

Ha! I got myself a supply drop, found the dark Imperium set on eBay for basically 50% off. Only catch, everything was assembled with plastic glue... Not the best for conversions unfortunately. So I broke some stuf... but most stayed usable

So first chaps will be a jump pack captain for the imperial judges and a twin LC Chaos Marine.

And then I de-nurglified this plague marine to create a less chaotic one. Looks suitably gritty and old!

May I proudly present, not my first
Spoiler:

Spoiler:

But my THIRD attempt at sculpting this particular Khorne daemon prince in terminator Armour!

So yeah, third time‘s the charm is what I heard... the weapons will be sword and axe, the two handed one I just played around with as it’s from the first sculpt (which was massive, it was a one hand axe on that one). Hopefully I’ll find enough time to work on this and finish it in a reasonable time. I’ll keep you guys posted!

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2019/03/16 18:18:38

@Sageheart: So am I, believe me

The thing with green stuff is that whenever you want to be really productive you have to force yourself to constantly stop in order for it to cure. If you don't do this you will end up regretting it... My point being I had to re-sculpt the land on the globe about 4 times due to me squishing it while reposing wings, arms or working on the mouth. So once the upper teeth were done I put it down and left it alone to cure.
Same thing with the axe, teeth got done, will cure now and then receive an additional layer to blend them in with the axe. Letting that cure and then finishing both sides of it seperately with the borders seen on its big brother.

Enjoy and as always let me know what you think!

This one is just to show the size compared to its first incarnation

Ahhh Syro, my good old companion. I can always count on you providing some feedback here! I’m glad you like the axes, I’m quite fond of the design too. Though I can’t take credit for it, the idea comes from one of the AoS Khorne warriors from the starter box. I’m simply up-scaling them as I love the feral design.
The orange putty is milliput terracotta, it’s not as expensive as green stuff and cures rock solid. So great for sanding and cutting away at. I can write up a bit more about the properties for sculpting if you like?

I’ll probably post an upgrade on the DP tomorrow

I did a bit more work on the DP, finishing all the teeth on the armor as well as blending in the teeth on the axe. It's all curing now and I should be able to do 2-3 more layers of work today, so there might be more updates later on

@mcmattila: I most certainly don't mind sharing. It's really simple: I just put 2-3 coats of guilliman blue glaze over basically any silver color, then a wash of Biel-Tan green finished with a last layer of the blue glaze. Takes a while due to each layer needing to dry before moving on but other than that is fairly simple. It's a tutorial I found online, not sure where anymore. In that example they used the GW green glaze (no idea what it is called), might produce a brigther result but I hónly had the green shade. Depending on the underlaying silver color you can make it darker or lighter or even layer up the silver with highlights etc and then apply the glaze.
Hope this helps

Here's another marine that I haven't posted here yet done for the last monthly painting challenge:

Cheers Pneumo, that definitely helps! I'm going to store the recipe for later. I don't have the green glaze either, though I have the yellow, so I could mix it with guilliman to make my own green.

I have been a regular from the very beginning. Thanks for all the cool stuff you do to keep me coming back. Nice progress on the teeth for the daemon prince. I didn't realize it was milliput terracotta, it looked more orange to me than when you made the dolphin and hamster diorama, maybe just the contrast of what's around it. I remember you have mostly worked with green stuff and bake-able clay in the past. Have you worked with regular milliput? If so, do you find any difference between it and milliput terracotta (other than color)?

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2019/03/17 21:21:50

Post by: Pneumo

@Syro: You sure have been, I'm glad you like the stuff I do I completely forgot about the hamster and dolphin! I think I have used normal milliput before but can't really compare as to how it holds up to the terracotta version. Terracotta is kind of weird when you mix it up and try to sculpt with it right away, it tends to "break" and pull apart, making it hard to get a smooth finish. If you leave it for a while though it gets fairly workable, I mainly use it to bulk out my shapes but might experiment with mixing it with green stuff to see how it holds up then.

@mcmattila, IGtR=: Glad I can help, let me know how it works out

Didn't quite get the amount of work in that I was trying to but I finished his left foot and made an attempt of sculpting a head. The head still needs more detail before I will decide if I keep it.
I'm not sure how I fell about the foot... What do you guys think?

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2019/03/17 23:07:23

Post by: Syro_

I think the foot looks good, but I think I see why you're not sure about it. It doesn't look that Khornate, more like it should be for a daemon of Tzeetch maybe, with the segmented talons? All the Khorne stuff I see have hooves or or thick curved toe claws off of short feet/toes. Maybe try something like that if you end up not liking this foot for this daemon prince. If you do choose to change it, I hope you can save that foot to use as the style basis for another daemon prince.

Yep, I think that’s what’s bothering me. It just looks to avian and tzeentch even though I like the general concept of it. Hmmmm, I’ll probably leave it for now, maybe I’ll grow to like it once I have more of the leg build up. If not I’ll scrap it and make a new one, unfortunately there’s no saving it. It’s build around the armature and I don’t think I can get it off without it being damaged.

Ah well it’s all a learning process!

Thanks you two! I printed it today and I’ll hand it in on Monday, so finally done!

To celebrate I did a small midnight session, gave him a cloak and the start of his weapons. One hammer and one axe.
The cloak still needs work as well and will probably be baked once before completely finishing it off. It’s quite hard to do the ends as they are just floating around without support underneath them.

I feel like with the cloak he has a very commander like feeling, or maybe a fallen/ forgotten king. What do you guys think?

I’ve done a little bit of work on the big old demon prince again. I’m happy with the way the face is turning out, other than that I’ve extended the body a bit as well as done some bulking out of the legs. Left legs definitely need more bulk still and I think I have to lower the arms a bit as well.

Good to be back Although I'm not really good at keeping up the pace at the moment... I have a few more exams coming up and then I'll finally be done with my bachelors!
So naturally I decided it's a good time to put in some more work on him while taking some breaks from studying. Compared to the last version I've roughed out the shoulder pads, bulked out the lower torso and the left leg a bit. I also sculpted his left hand and bulked out the sword a bit, althoug the sword will be filed down a little bit again. The last thing I did was play around with the wings to see what I would do with them. I ended up with a boney kind of wing structure, I think I like it but I'm not entirely sold yet. I'll probably end up putting some tattered remains of the skin/ fabric?! of the wing on it. Full out functional wings would probably be too much for him.

As always let me know what you think and enjoy the pictures!

So here's the thing. I'm great at procrastinating and not doing the things I'm supposed to do....
This means that unfortunately I did not make any progress on the DP :(

I did however start two new sculpts. One is a tyranid worm creature and the other a Tau auxilliary. Enjoy!

Tyranid:
Pretty happy with the way he is turning out. Definetely like the tentacle mouth, but not sure how smart it was to do it this early... They might just be in the way now
He'll mostly only get his face done from now on and then the six arms. The body will pretty much stay the way it is.

Tau Auxilliary:
For this guy I wanted to resemble this artwork that I found ages ago. I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. I'm just not entirely sold on the left shoulder and the helmet, but all in all I'm happy. I did crank this one out in just a few days, basically chopped up the bits and glued them together and then did the sculpting in three layers/ sittings.

Original art (not from me):

As always let me know what you think and don't worry, I won't abandon the DP!

They both look great. I do that a lot when sculpting, I get really into working on a part of it, and then realize it's blocking access to work on other parts. Did you use GreenStuffWorld rollers to make the tenticles? I especially like the head/helm of the Tau auxilliary, it looks really cool.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words
And yes, the main issue I have with sculpting large things is that, well they're massive. It takes a lot of time and work just to get one area done on them. Take the DP for example, the smallest part I could do on him is probably his bunny ear and that would require about as much work (if not more due to a larger surface and more room for detail) as sculpting the torso of the Tau Auxilliary.
So yeah, big sculpts are great and I do want to finish the DP, but the smaller ones just get done so much quicker.

I did another layer on the Tyranid last night, half of his arms are now done as well as some detail on his face. I'll do the other half today and finish his face. If I'm quick (and impatient) I might even be able to finish him completely today, before I leave for vacations on sunday.
As always let me know what you think!

It’s actually milliput terracotta. It’s pretty cheap but handles completely different compared to green stuff. For rough work however it works great, especially since it can be easily smoothed with a bit of water.
And Syro, forgot to say it last time, I did use the green stuff tube tool for the tentacles. It’s honestly an amazing tool and the only drawback is it’s size. The long tentacles are already longer than the maximum, so I carefully did two turns on those. I think they have a larger one by now though.

Anyway, I rushed through sculpting yesterday and managed to get him done
I might do a bit more work on the first carapace shell on his head, but other than that he’s done.
Less text, more pictures. Enjoy!

Next steps:

And finished one:

Well it's certainly been a while once again...
But I've decided to start and share a few projects once again. Special thanks to Syro for checking up on me to see if I'm still kicking around.
Enjoy the pictures of all my current WIPs

First off a sculpting project I started (and almost finished) today (sculpted in Beesputty, so it needs to be baked). It'll either be a stone or an ice golem, not sure yet which one. It mainly needs finishing touches and smoothing.
Spoiler:

Step 1: Rough shape over a wire armature. I added a lot of blobs to bulk up the shape.

Step 2: Blending in all the blobs to get a more complete shape.

Step 3: Adding more blobs of clay and blending them in until I was happy with the shape. Then I carved in sections for the individual stones. I'll refine the shapes and smooth everything out before baking him. The plan is to sculpt him in one baking session.

And then I did a bit of painting on some Tau inspired models. The goal here is to create a small and diverse Kill Team ready to take on any task. (I have some more basic Tau laying around and a few old school Stealth suits, might convert up a crisis suit as a leader)
Spoiler:

Melee focused Tau Auxilliary

Test Kroot model, although I didn't use the scheme any further

Human Auxilliary, more tank focused with the shield

First Tau model, although I still need to glue it up and pin it to the base

Kroot with bow and the paint scheme I settled on

And a group shot of all the finished models

That's it for today, I'll keep you guys posted as soon as I get some more work done.
As always, let me know what you think

Thanks Syro
It’s good to be back too, I do still enjoy sculpting quite a bit

So whenever I finish a sculpt or project that I particularly like, I literally take it with me at all times. So when I sat down yesterday to read a bit in the sun I snapped a few pictures of my new favorite sculpt in his natural habitat.

And the proof that he’s with me at all times:
Spoiler:

I also ordered some silicon and resin to try out my hand at casting a miniature and since I really love this guy, I gave it a shot.
In theory these supports should be enough to get resin everywhere, I think, it’s all a guessing game right now.

Turn him upside down to cast, looks like it might work...

Took too long Mixing the silicon, the last bit of it was already kind of solid. Hopefully it won’t show in the cast.

You can clearly see where the silicon was to solid to pour...

Despite initial setbacks, once cleaned up it looks kind of alright

And I managed to retrieve the model, he did receive a few cuts and bruises though

And now last but not least, a first try to cast him. I’ll take pictures as soon as he’s done and upload them

So quite a process to get all that done, I hope he turns out nice and I’ll keep you guys posted

Thanks!

I think the cast turned out quite good. It did break on all four limbs though, but nothing a bit of glue and green stuff can’t fix.
The cast had quite a few small bubbles, not sure if it’s the silicon or the resin. I’ll try a different resin later today, that one takes 24h to cure though.
All in all I really like how it turned out, I’ll paint it up as soon as I can

As always, feedback is appreciated!

I can see why you want to cast your golem, it looks like an official miniature you would buy somewhere. I'm glad the cast copy turned out well despite breaking. I don't have any experience casting in resin but I've heard if you vibrate the mold as the resin is setting up it can help get rid of the air bubbles. I don't think you want to try to get some kind of pressure vessel. Do you have any plans to sell your golem in the future?

I like how your favorite sculpts travel around with you. For me, I keep going back and just staring at mine, like "wow, did I really make that?"

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2020/06/26 10:10:14

Post by: Pneumo

For this sculpt the micro bubbles actually add more character to the golem. But I had a few issues with the mold too. I took to long to mix my silicon so I suppose that has something to do with it as well. A pressure pot is not in planning right now, I think I’d only need it if I would cast and sell the minis.
I didn’t plan to sell casts of the golem, however if someone is interested in a cast then I guess I could cast a few models. So if anyone wants a copy just send me a PM, I’m sure we’ll work something out.

The next project, besides painting the cast golem (he’s base coated as of right now), is a friend for him. I found this picture and it looked like a peaceful giant of a golem. It’s a four legged version, so different pose and slightly larger in terms of bulk. I’m terms of height it’s roughly the same.

This is how I started, can you see the similarities already?

Next step was to bulk out the model, again with beesputty. Still doesn’t look like much, does it?

And this is the current stage, once everything is blended together it actually kind of resembles a miniature at this point.

I’ll try to cast him up as well and then see what else I can add to the collection. Might do a few different elementals, although I really enjoy the rock sculpting right now.
As always, let me know what you think.

I've finished painting the cast golem, quite happy with how he turned out. I did make another cast but the mold leaked, since I forgot to add a rubber band, so the golem is missing his lower legs.

Painted golem:

I've also managed to get the rough shape of the big golem to where I'm happy with it. Now it's just a matter of smoothing out everything and defining all the shapes/ rocks that I want to have.
I am struggling to reach stomach to sculpt there, not sure how to get around that yet since I do want to sculpt him in one baking session.

Big golem:

Both the cast and the big golem are looking great. As for being able to sculpt details on the stomach, that's a tough one. You may need to create some custom sculpting tools specially made with the angles you would need to make those hard to reach details?

Really nice work sculpting and casting. I enjoyed watching the process.

For the stomach, I'd go for two bakes: leave the stomach until you pop it off the cork after the first bake.

@youwashock: Thank you very much

@Syro: Thanks! I kind of went with Vermis suggestion and popped him off the cork, but good idea with new tools.

@Vermis: I did go for one bake, but I went with your idea and popped him off the cork. Made it easier to reach everything and didn't distort to much while doing it.

@Boss Salvage: Thank you, was a lot of fun painting them too.

So now, here's everything I did since the last update:

Off the cork, stomach still a mess.

Basically everything done and smoothed out.

Relaxing hot break in the oven

And the final result for now. I have absolutely no clue where the white dots came from, they cleaned up easily with a soft toothbrush, so not really a concern either.
It did have a few minor cracks but all in all went well, nothing a bit of cleanup can't fix. I'll try to finish him up today, bake again tomorrow and then get to casting

@youwashock: thanks! Took a while until I found out what you were referencing, I’m afraid that was before my time I can’t really see the similarities, but I guess it’s a bit nostalgia too

@Boss Salvage: yes, I wanted to make them quite sturdy

@Vermis: I use both, tools and alcohol as a smoother. I have some pictures below. It smoothies out nicely with just tools though. And I had to look up the rock monster too, I can definitely see the similarities

@Syro: more tools is also never a bad idea

A friend stopped by yesterday and I had to do a bit more at work, so I didn’t get to bake everything yesterday. I did however finish a small elemental to go along with the big guy.
Let me know what kind of element you think it is, that way I can see if I did a good job

@youwashock: and the missing elementals are either WIP (below) or in planning I still have to do the molds, I'm not 100% sure whats the best way to cast them regarding supports etc. But afterwards, I'd be happy to cast up a few for anyone who's interested.

@Vermis: Thank you very much, I really like how the top of the elemental turned out. Not entirely sold on the hands though, any suggestions? I though about sculpting in a lightning bolt between them.

@theCrowe: Thanks for looking through all of it Glad you enjoyed it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Back to the progress pictures
I've started a new elemental, I could make you guess again but I think this one is fairly obvious I've done the first two steps on it, bulking out and initial refinement. For this one I might have to bake it twice to get the head and arms the way I want them to be, as they are quite thin. Next step for this one is smoothing everything out and finishing all details I want on it.
I'll try to mold and cast the other two candidates this weekend, but as I said above, I'm still trying to figure out the best way for it. Not entirely sure what the best position is for a one part mold.

Until then, enjoy the pictures

Step 1: Bulking out the initial shape (basic wire armature beneath the clay)

Step 2: Initial refinement, everything is roughly the way it should be size wise.

I’ll see what I can cone up with for the second sculpt, definitely some good ideas
I had a bit of work to do the last couple of days and did some other hobby stuff of mine as well. So all I got done was the mold and first cast of our nice air elemental friend.

Cast turned out pretty good, although for some unknown reason the top did not want to cure right. So it’s kind of flat on top, but no big issue, the good thing is that the mold is making nice copies

And yes, that second picture was edited by a professional

So it's been a few days since my last update. I moved places from my parents back to my little appartment so I didn't get that much done. Now that I am settled in and have cleaned the place up, I can get back to the important things
While I couldn't bring all my hobby stuff (no paints and nothing for my other hobbies) I did manage to pack all my sculpting supplies, a few minis to work on my kill team and the full elemental gang.

This is the current status of them, fire still needs to get finished, mainly the arms and upper body. The large stone elemental needs to get baked again as I did a bit more work on his feet (so he has an even stance) and the new addition is a second air elemental.

Here are all of them in their current state:

And our newcomer:

Plus I also found this guy in one of my drawers while cleaning up, so I'll probably finish him and think about what else I want to add to his base.

@Vermis: Thanks! Glad you like them both I believe the initial idea of the sleeping/dead (probably dead ) creature came from a magic the gathering card. I might have to look around and dig that art back out.

Not much happened in terms of progress. I smoothed out the second air boi and he is ready for casting now. The real big news is that I got my hands on a new casting resin. So I'll test that tomorrow and see how it works, wish me luck

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2020/07/17 16:48:12

Post by: Pneumo

Thanks! I think I prefer this one over the first version

The new resin is an absolute blast! It's easy to mix, super liquid so easy to pour and it hardenes in roughly 30minutes. Although at that point it is still quite soft, but safe to handle.

So here's what I got around to do:

Quick silicone pour because I made the mold upside down, so the bottom was open (kinda messed up, this fixes it)

Looks kinda funny

And then here are the new models with the brand new resin:
The stone golem is a bit rough at the feet, this is because I didn't mix enough (or barely enough) to make both minis. Other than that the cast is pretty good, there's only a few minor bubbles.

The air elemental came out pretty nice too, only issue is a massive bubble on topp of him. Should be easy to fix though, I'll see if it happens again with another cast.

Post by: Vermis

Nicely done! I don't have much experience with resin casting, but from what I've seen, I'd guess that one bubble on the back is almost nothing in terms of teething troubles.

@theCrowe: Really liking him too I'm using Beesputty, I bough 1kg of it back in the day and it's my go to oven bakable clay. Sticks to itself quite nicely, sticks to wire and you can bake it as often as you want. I think they have all kind of colors too by now.

@Vermis: I did a few more casts and it seems like they all pretty much have that bubble :( The good thing is that it will be quite easy to fix on the cast models.

So I've been busy again
I've finished the air 2.0, baked it and then made a silicone mold. Mold turned out pretty good and it is popping out quite nice copies. The only issue is that the tip of the hands always has a small bubble in them. Should be easy to fix with a bit of green stuff though.

Air 2.0

More pictures of the finished mini here
Spoiler:

I also made the silicone mold for the big guy and decided to cast all of them at once. It was quite messy, luckily I was prepared with gloves and baking paper beforehand so it was easy to clean up. Basically what happened was that the holes for the resin to pour in were to small, so it got everywhere...

This is what my collection looks like now, it is a lot of fun to just cast away and duplicate my sculpts

And this is what the air 2.0 cast looks like

Last but not least, I made a second cast of everything where I enlarged the pouring holes and took my time, considerably less messy. Although I did forget one rubber band which led to quite a bit of resin flash on the stone golem.

The fire elemental will take a bit more time, I'm not really happy enough with him to bake him yet. But he will get done eventually.
For all the other ones, I'd be happy to cast some up for anyone that's interested. Just send me a PM and we can work something out.

As always, let me know what you think

@youwashock: definitely ready for mass production Although my materials might run out and I guess a pressure pot would make things a bit nicer. As is I could crank out a copy of each one in about 30min.

@Vermis: Had to look up pumice, not a word you would know as a non native speaker but yes it totally looks the part, thankfully it only is the flash that looks like it. The rest is fine

@Syro: I know right? It's just so satisfying, I don't even know what I want them for

@Wirecat: I suppose the molds would be quite deep?! Idk at what point it would stop working, I'll definitely try that out though And yes, a pressure pot would help quite a bit here. The rubber band does the trick for now

@Boss Salvage: I kind of underestimated the big guy too. I feel like he looks bigger in white

I have no updates as of now, did a bit of work on the hound and been thinking about new projects again. The fire elemental is still looking at me and shaming me for not continuing, but I'm at a bit of a creative low with him
I've also been playing a bit of Destiny 2 and X-COM Chimera Squad and I would really love to create a modular model that could receive multiple loadouts. Maybe look into a completely custom Kill Team. We'll see what the future brings

Well, it's been a few days again since the last update. You'd think that in these times you'd have more time at home/ hobby time.
I stumbled upon the following post/picture while browsing and checking out nice conversions: https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/bt9h7k/primarisscale_terminator_for_elites/ and since I have always had a soft spot for terminators, I thought "Why not?"

So I scavenged my bitz box, found a few things I thought would work well together and went to work. I am happy with the mashed up body, the cape still needs a bit of work but other than that I think it works well. Ironically the top is from the Death Guard Terminator in the box, which I love the old look of. I think once I'm done this model will be a neat combination of old and new.
I'm not entirely sold on the arms yet. Any ideas for loadouts? Maybe a shield would be nice too...

And since I was already in my bitz box, I found a few more interesting things (mainly the breast plate) where I thought they'd make a neat terminator. The base for this model was an Interceptor from the Dark Imperium Box, the bulked up legs work nicely for this. The sword is from the Dark Vengeance Lord and the "cape" and halo from some Age of Sigmar models. I still have quite a bit of sculpting to do to make the torso work, but in general, this is my favorite of the two chaps.

And some scale shots

As always, let me know what you think

Thanks!

I finished the shape of the torso on my terminator conversion and made a hard decision to shave down one of my all time favorite swords. I absolutely love the sword from the dark vengeance chaos lord, but I've decided to shave off all the faces as well as the spikes it had. Now it still looks suitably chaotic but it could also be a very unqiue loyalist sword
The theme for this guy is probably going to be the direction of Alpha Legion, I don't want to make him a spiky marine with tons of chaos stuff but I also don't want him to be 100% clean and imperial. Besides the sword, I have also worked on the power fist so that it only looks like a normal power fist with spiky fingers. Although I am debating trying my hand at sculpting a custom power claw for him as I love the look of those.
The torso is now in the shape that I want it and only needs final detailling, like rivets for example. I'm not sure if I should leave the legs as is or change the shin to look more like an older power armor.
Last but not least I need to decide if I want him to have the AoS cape or no cape, I really like both looks and can't decide. The initial idea was for him to be a word bearer because I loved the halo with the candles for that and in that case the cape would work perfekt.
Oh and I also did the base Painting wise I'm thinking of a marble staircase.

So please help me with these
- cape or no cape?
- leave the legs as is or make them look like an older power armor?
- fist or claw?

And pictures, this time in greyscale. Try to spot all the greenstuff
No cape

With cape

No arms

The work you did with the sword looks really nice, Pneumo. I like your idea of a custom power claw, my personal preference is no cape, sculpt older armor on legs, and power claw. Then again, 40k is all about being over the top, so maybe have the cape too
Keep up the impressive work.

I love the cape actually, though I think Syro_ is right that the legs seem a little bare in comparison. Might not be a bad thing though, it keeps focus on the upper body and the epic halo, and the cape adds detail in the lower area.

Well I did do the legs and I added a few rivets. The legs still need to be shaved down to make them smooth and give them the final shape.
Still haven’t decided on the cape, I’m leaning towards it though. Good thing I can leave that decision until the end. I do want to make the claw, but didn’t stat yet on that

Thanks for the feedback and the interest

And a bit of progress over the weekend, this time in full color
The legs are basically done now, I don't think I'll do much more to them. Probably will just do a final smoothing out of everything before calling it completely done. I do like the new look
Besides a few candles for the base I also started work on the claw. It's obviously still very rough, but the general shape is there. I do like the claw look more at the moment, but since I don't have to glue the arms in place until painting I can still switch freely.
Last but not least I'm also debating if I should change the sword, the bottom half of it where the faces used to be is a bit thin and uneven. I will probably try to smooth it out with putty first, but I might just clip it off and do my own sword/blade.

As always, let me know what you think!

And managed to get a bit more work done on the claw. But I swear with the current heat here in Germany and specifically my apartment the green stuff cures quite a bit faster.... Might just be me going crazy though.
Anyway, for small projects amounts of putty the faster curing is actually quite helpful. But progress on green stuff conversions is always slower than on fully sculpted minis that are oven bakable. I have a bit more work to do on the claw and then need to decide how I want to decorate it, but I do like the general shape it is taking.

Let me know what you think!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And this is our good fellow now. I think I will decide against the cape, I do like it but it gets in the way of the claw and makes the model a bit clutted. I might opt for a different cape or cut off one of the ribbons.
I did a bit more work on the claw and am almost done with that. I think by now there is not that much left to do. I also bulked out the sword and am much happier with it now

Everything is looking good as usual Pneumo
I like how the claw is coming. I thought the sword was fine as is, but I have to admit that you made it look even better than before. I'm sorry to hear about the heat making it hard to sculpt. Along with curing faster, is the green stuff stickier and falling apart more? I've read about that happening in summer without air conditioning.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2020/08/12 11:55:06

Post by: Pneumo

Glad you like how everything is coming together
The green stuff sure is stickier than usual, I have it in a tube wrapped in clear plastic and usually it peels right off with no issues. If anything the yellow would stick a bit, and not (hard to tell in the picture I guess) it's not wanting to come off at all. As far as sculpting with it goes though it's not a big issue and it cures just fine in the end.
And last but not least, I have a little treat for you
Spoiler:

As promised I printed this guy and slowly got to work on him with all the leftover green stuff I had from my terminator. He is slowly coming along. He may or may not turn into a certain "Spider", alternatively he could just be a wanderer. I guess it depends on what I end up doing with the top part of him

I've done a bit more work on the claw, although it is hard to take a picture of it. I've sculpted a little dip on the actual claws. For now I'll leave the claw as done, though I might give it a rim in the future if I feel like it.

I'm leaving for a two week vacation tomorrow, so there will be a bit of a break in terms of updates.

I get that kind of green stuff too, instead of the ribbon. For me the blue has been stickier, I wonder why the difference. The sculpts are looking good, both the claw and the spider. I like how much more character the lower half has as you sculpt on top of the printed armature. Enjoy your vacation

And I managed to do a bit of sculpting over the last few days.

First off I did a few teeth that I might implement later on the staff or mini, not sure yet. It was left over green stuff anyway

I then sculpted an evil looking chestplate and a potential flaming hand.

The last step I got done was adding a cowl and a belt. I also made a sword as an alternative for the flaming hand.
@Syro: which one do you prefer? Magic hand or sword?

All that's left to do now is to finish his head (probably getting a mask) and his arms as well as the weapons of choice. So almost done
As always let me know what you think!

Why not both? With your casting ability you could have your sword cake and eat it with flaming hands, too! If it has to be one, I vote flames.

That mini is looking really nice. I especially like the look with the staff in one hand, with the flame on the other.

Post by: Pneumo

@youwashock: I kinda want to eat a sword cake with flaming hands now
Unfortunately I’m not planning to cast this one, though it might’ve been a cool idea. I went with the flames and put the sword on the back, in case Magic won’t do it anymore
@Syro: Thanks, good thing I went with that option then

He’s almost done now! I did the arms, added the flames and most importantly I finished the dreaded head. Sculpting the head is always the most challenging part of a mini I think. It’s more often than not the focus point and really makes or brakes a sculpt in my opinion. Since I have to practice sculpting faces a bit more I did what and reasonable man would do and sculpted a mask
I figured I still need that spider vibe for him and a mask was the perfect way to do it. Now he could also pose as a magical cult leader
All that’s left to do now is to finish his right hand and polish up some rough edges, especially the flaming hand and the sword. I might add a few tiny eyeballs to the mask as well to reinforce that spider feel. I might also add a bit more detail to the staff and belt section.
The last step then would be to create a suitable base for him. Any ideas here?

I don't have any brilliant insight on the base, but I love his head! The terminator has also been very cool to watch come together, great work on the armor plating.

@Boss Salvage: I also didn't have any brilliant ideas for the base, went with something easy and basic. I do really like the head too, thanks
@Youwashock: Glad you like it, I'm happy it works out this way as I don't have to sculpt a face then

The Spider/ Cultist Champion is finally done! I did a quick paved cobblestone base as I feel like that should fit in almost everywhere. I then added the hand as well as a scabbard to hold the sword. Last but not least I gave him a small pouch for his coins and belonging as well as a small drinking horn or trinket.
I'm really happy with how he turned out and I enjoyed the sculpting over the 3D printed mini as it makes sticking to proportions quite a bit easier.
Let me know what you think of him, anything that I should add/ change?

I also attached the arms to my terminator, it does look a bit funky as the torso is mostly done (at least the main colors) and the arms are black or not even primed. I should be able to fix that tonight though
The cape is still flying around and could be added at the end, I just have to paint it seperately and then see if I like it.
In terms of progress, I tried my hand at a bit of battle damage (and might've went overboard a bit) and I really like the look and feel it gives the mini.
Still lots to paint in him though

Last but not least I started work on another possessed, this time based on a Primaris marine. It still needs a lot of work as well but I think I'm happy with the general pose. Not entirely sold on the head yet as it might just be a tiny bit to small.

The spider mask is a cool idea. There are big changes to the flaming hand as well, which look good. I also second what youwayshock said about all the fabric. That is quite a mini I like how your terminator is turning out too.

@youwashock: Thank you very much It's been a great learning experience for me, so I'm happy he turned out nice. Terminator is on his way to being awesome as well
@Syro: Glad you like the mask and you're right I forgot to mention the flaming hand Added a bit more flames there

In terms of progress I have done most of the work on the Terminator. I only need to finish up the silver bits and the sword I believe. Everything else is just minor touchups. I decided to challenge myself again and went with a marble base. Really like how it turned out, though it was quite a lot of trial and error. The only thing I might still do here is add a bit of shadow to the bottom of the steps.
All in all I love the way he turned out

And since I have no big project on my plate right now (besides the possessed, though that is mostly kitbashed). I decided to try my hand at a Space Marine Bust. My cousin is really into Blood Angels, so that's what I went with. Thanks to thingyverse and 3D printing I got myself a nice base to work on without much work from my side.
Right shoulder will be a teardrop for 2nd company, left shoulder will be either of the chapter symbol designs below. Need your help to decide on which one I should pick
Helmet and backpack are printing right now, should be done tonight and then I can start smoothing everything out with putty and sculpting all the additional details I want to put on him.
If he turns out great I might do a few more, probably a chaos one next

The Space Marine bust is a cool idea, I'm looking forward to seeing your work on it. Are you doing a Horus Heresy era blood angel? As for the sketches, I like the first one with two wings, I feel a single wing on the blood drop looks too much like Emperor's Children symbol with the single wing on a bird claw.

Post by: Pneumo

@Syro: I've been wanting to do one for a while now and with the 3D printing it just was to easy to not do As for 30k or 40k, I haven't really decided yet. I just really liked the armor and shoulders
You're also absolutely right about the sketches, I was just to lazy to draw the second wing Both versions would've had two wings, the differentiation was just up and pointy over the shoulders edge or only on the shoulder, which is what I went with now

So here is a wall of pictures to show the latest steps that I did:
First and foremost, all the parts are printed now Got the helm and the backpack in the right position and am happy with the overall look. As you can see the print is fairly rough in places, so I will need to sculpt over every bit of it to make it nice and smooth.
The right shoulder got the 2nd company drop on it and the left one got a slightle thinner and longer drop for the chapter emblem.

Next up was smoothing out the right shoulders inner section and sculpting the actual drop on the right. It now sits nicely on a thin underground layer for some extra detail.

Next step was purity seals with some leftover green stuff. Can't go wrong with these

I then added the topmost wing structure to the chapter symbol

And now he looks like this. This is also roughly the spots I think I'll add the purity seals to.

And during my lunch break today I started on the first wing of the chapter symbol. It's curing right now and I will work more on it tonight

That's the current status of him, really like the way he is turning out. Although I still have a ton of work to do in smoothing everything out
I might do more busts in the future as I'm having a lot of fun with it, the scale will probably be a bit smaller then to make it a smaller project.
As always, let me know what you think

@Wirecat: Glad you enjoy the process, I always found it quite helpful to see the individual layers of a sculpt. Makes it easier for people that get into sculpting to see the importance of layers
@youwashock: Thank you very much
@JamesY: Thanks! Glad you like it
@Theophony: I believe it's a Prusa MK2, it's my brothers who got it a long time ago. I'm currently making him print all kinds of things for me

I've made a few adjustments to the bust and also got a bit of progress done. Based on a bit of feedback from my cousin, I've shaved down the legion number on the front of the chestplate and switched out the backpack to a plainer one. We've decided to create a 30k Blood Angel, so the eagle heads would not quite fit that much.
I'm also slowly making progress on smoothing out all surfaces. Last but not least I added the second row of feathers to the shoulder pad.

Bust Progress:

The second project I started (since I'm very bad at only having a single project ) is a 3D printed ogre. I found this print while looking for a goblin DnD character to polish up for my brother. I fell in love with it and decided to print it as well.

@youwashock: ask and you shall receive

All that's left to do on him is the right foot, hands, face and the rope around his left hand. I guess the cleaver will also need a bit of polishing after attachment, plus I need to do the base...
Guess there's a bit more left than I thought

On the bust I shaved down th chapter symbol, I might need to add an outline/rim to the top of the wing. But other than that I'm calling that half done. I'm also back to my full supply of sculpting tools and will try a very watered down miliput as a liquid green stuff substitute. If that works I'll be able to smooth out a lot of the 3D print with no issues at all. Fingers crossed

Awesome. I love that you have taken a fully formed 3D mini and used it as an armature. The BA symbol is really looking tight. In my extremely limited experience, I have found that Milliput makes for a usable slip.

I'm very curious about how the watered down milliput will work, keep us posted. The progress is looking good.

Post by: Pneumo

@youwashock: Definetely makes getting the proportions right way easier
@Syro: watered down miliput was alright I guess. Not enough to smooth out the prints though.

This is what I got from the watered down miliput. I might have to make the mixture a bit thicker but all in all I don't believe that this will be the solution to smoothing the prints.

For this guy I finished his other foot, attached the sword and started on the face. The face is definetely the most difficult part here as I can't just smooth it out easily. Lots of reconstruction to the facial features to do

The bust got a few more smooth areas, so it's moving along nicely too. I also ordered a few makeup brushes to try a few new techinques I found online that I want to use for the bust.

Last but not least I found this guy laying around in some unknown depths. I actually won that game box back in the day, so he is one of my first 40k miniatures ever painted. He'll soon join my Alpha legion group

First of all, I also got a bit more done on the bust. One large surface on the chest and a bit of progress on the shouldpad rims. I just forgot to snap pictures of that, so those will follow.

Now I've been watching a few miniature painting videos online and I found a channel that does mostly drybrushing (Artis Opis) and since it looks kinda easy (easier than a thousand thinly painted layers) I thought I'd give it a shot too.
I liked the idea of a textured palette that he is always using and thought to myself, well should be easy enough to make with a bit of crumpled tin foil and resin.
Jokes on me.... The texture is great, but the resin stuck to the foil and I can't get it off

So I made a quick silicone mould and now it works fine

This is what I primed up to play around with. I want to do at least one blood angel to get more practice with those for my bust. Other than that I'll just play around. The Khornate looking primaris will also join my alpha legion

Last but not least, here is a really messy paint job that I did with my airbrush (first mini ever with it, it's been laying around for years). It looked quite alright until I added the wash. Oh well

@youwashock: Thanks a lot! The face is always the hardest part but I am very happy with how it turned out
@Boss Salvage: I could do even more if you are still looking to get your hands on some of those air elementals?

I think I can finally call another sculpt completely done! The only thing I might change here is the ring on his sword, I might switch it out to a wire ring instead of the green stuff as it would hold better I think. Other than that I only need to smooth out the rope a bit once it is cured. I am very happy with him and love everything about him
I was sceptical about the face at first but in the end I think I got it to work. It is about 4 or 5 different layers of green stuff with each curing in between and always only adding tiny details and volumes.

Enjoy the end result and let me know what you think

More pictures in here
Spoiler:

As a side note, I am also making progress on the bust, it is just not very exciting as I am only covering smooth armor with a thin layer of green stuff

Your ogre looks great The details and musculature are top notch, but what impresses me most of all is how smooth and seamless you create each part and layer, that's something I am struggling with right now.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2020/09/23 15:23:26

Post by: Pneumo

Thanks Syro
That is definetely something that I struggled with quite a bit too. Sometimes I even still do, I feel like the face might even have a few transition lines. What I found to work best was to not use green stuff alone, I always mix it with Aves Apoxie sculpt. This makes it cure quite hard so you can sand it afterwards if you wish, I also find it helpful to have a solid layer underneath my next one. Not sure if this makes sense, I could try to draw up a quick picture too, but basically you take a metal tool and drag youur fresh putty over the old layer until it is super thin and you scrape the rest off. For me that makes the best transition

Thanks for the advice Pneumo. Yes, what you are saying, does make sense. I didn't realize your sculpts weren't pure green stuff. It's funny, Aves Apoxie Sculpt is exactly what I mix with my green stuff too, that's why my sculpts are often that pale green. What kind of ratio of green stuff to Apoxie sculpt do you like to use?

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2020/09/24 14:53:51

Post by: Pneumo

I actually cheated on the last ogre pictures and added a bit of green back in with my phone settings I am pretty much always using a 50/50 ratio of aves and green stuff, so good choice there

Last update for the ogre, while it was curing I decided to cut in a bit of detail for the rope to mimic the original print. Now he really is all done

Besides some other small projects and the bust where I am making constant small progress, I also managed to slap some more paint on that Khornate looking fellow. His armor is all set with the right shade and only needs the battle damage. I decided to go for purple power weapons and tried my hand at those. Really happy with the axe and somewhat happy with the sword I might go back and change the sword and claw of my terminator
Other than that he is still work in progress, but he is coming along nicely!

As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks yowashock, I'm trying to push myself a bit with my painting skills

I de-nurglyfied a Dark Imperium Death Guard marine and made a little diorama base for him. The base was inspired by Istvaan V, including a Raven Guard helmet.

Pretty happy with how he turned out, might just go back and grime up the blade a bit more

It's a more tragic part of the story really, this de-deteriorated state. Before the ultimate and unrecoverable corruption. Like maybe there's still a bit of humanity still alive in there. Still a dying ember of hope that he might avoid the doom that awaits.

He's clearly still strong and fast, agile and vital but you can see the tell-tale signs of things to come; the excessively rusty blade, a totem of decay, the battle damaged carapace like an undressed wound inviting infection. The seeds sewn of a long, slow hideous decline.

Really evocative, much more so than some gruesome pustulating tenticle-armed horned plague monster.

Well it's been a while since my last update. But rest assured, I'm still around
This hobby kept me sane during my bachelors thesis and now it shall do so again with my master thesis

I dug up an old project that I started in September, the blood angel bust that my brother 3D printed for me. I've then covered up every surface of it with green stuff to smooth it out. Now it is finally finished! It took quite some time, but in the end my will of wanting to see it done and painted was stronger than the boring work of smoothing out everything. I did manage to add a few details that the original did not have and I'm especially happy with the way both shoulders turned out. I think he makes a glorious hawk boy!

Well with this final detail he is finished

For all of you that want to see more of the individual steps that I took to get him to the final stage, here are all the pictures I took along the way:
Spoiler:

And to test out my airbrush and painting scheme, I create a quick small bust from my bits box
This just screams: Don't talk to me or my son ever again!

The final paint job will be similar, although not quite exactly the same.

As always, let me know what you guys think!

Thanks Warboss_Waaazag! I definetely enjoy sculpting over a solid base, makes sticking to proportiong so much easier For this particular model I also learned quite a bit about smoothing out your sculpt, which is also super useful.

Back to the projects at hand! I've been quite busy in my hours after work and managed to completely paint the blood angel bust. On top of that I also fine tuned the supports on a primaris bust 3D model that I found online, so I made a few of those. You can never have to many unfinished projects at once, right?

This is the final result for my blood angel bust, I'll take some better pictures another time. I'm super happy with how it turned out in the end
There's more pictures below of some WIP shots, as well as more of the final model.

And this is the first print of the primaris bust, unfortunately the backpack and the right arm didn't print at all. The normal shoulder pad and helmet also printed faulty. So after fixing the supports and printing it again (with great success as seen below), I did what any person in my position would do. I converted the model to chaos
Again, more pictures below in the spoiler.

And finally here we have the good version of the print, there's still a few tiny mistakes in it but overall it prints great. That's why I already have 3 sitting on my desk
And once more, there's , more pictures in the spoiler.

Painting on the big bust:
Spoiler:

I primed everything black and then gave it a coat of white from above. Probably would've worked better with a more transparent paint in the end, but you can see a bit of color transition in the final model.

Now with a proper red coat of paint.

A few layers of paint, unfortunately I did not take many WIP shots. But I really like the battle damage and marble effect

Putting it all together

Finished paintjob
Spoiler:

Extremely happy with how it turned out! I gave the whole model an oil wash to darken it down and to shade the recesses. I could've done a lot more on the black in terms of highlights, but I wasn't feeling confident enough for that. I'll probably practice that on my new smaller busts and then maybe come back to this.
My favorite parts are definetely the marble, gemstones and eyes

Chaos bust:
Spoiler:

And here we have our "failed" print, did a bit of battle damage on the front with some extra sculpted teeth. A new chaotic helmet, as the support under the fron of the helmet didn't print correctly. His right side got a nice tentacle arm and chaotic shoulder pad, the holes will be filled with teeth. Last but not least he will get a custom power pack on the back, as that also did not print. I mean sure, I could print all the missing parts and have another clean bust, but where's the fun in that?

New space marine bust resin print:
Spoiler:

Not much to tell here, there's a few more pouches, gun holsters and bits I could print to add to this. Overall I'm happy with how it looks, one will probably get a custom chapter emblem sculpted and be painted in the custom colors of my cousin. Other than that I'm not sure what I will paint these 3 guys in

How nice to see that you still make this kind of small figurines. Your bust turned out just perfect, as a fan of the warhammer game series, I would give all my money for this. Although I probably shouldn't buy something like this because the kids will break it anyway. They are already difficult to calm down, and if they see something like this, they will not be able to sit still for any reason.

I've double checked the forum rules and it clearly says that thread necromancy is allowed as long as it is your own thread.

So here we are again

I've been busy with work and other hobbies for quite a while, but the magic of 40k and sculpting pulled me back in

My last projects where some McFarlane Marines, starting with an Imperial Fist Loyalist and then I obviously had to get a chaos marine as well. Chaos marine will be a Word Bearer.

Spoiler:

First everything was painted nice and crisp

Then some heavy weathering

Lots of room for some freehanding, in this scale it is also not too bad

Word Bearer:

Spoiler:

custom 2handed weapon for him

Half blind half sith eyes

And my latest sculpting project is a custom Space Marine armature. Basically a fully posable space marine that I can cast up and then sculpt over whenever I want to make one.
This is the scale reference that I printed (both for normal and for Primarch sizes (tiny bit taller than Primaris)

And this is the current state of the Primarch sized Space Marine. I started with that one as it will force me to not use any existing mini and simply sculpt over it.

Hi Syro, been a long time, good to see you are still around

Progress on the new Space marines is going a bit slow at the moment, the main reason for this is that sculpting only the individual parts and not the whole miniature is not quite as intuitive. I did a bit of work on the chest part and then another mockup. The axe is also custom made, I sculpted the blade and then made a mold with some reusable blue stuff (basically silikon mold that turns soft in hot water) and cast it with UV resin. Similar thing was done for the green foot, except here I just pressed my usual scultping putty into the mold.

The current progress on the blob of progress for curing
Basically did some additional armor plates on the upper legs, mainly for decoration. Probably only the first of many layers for the lower legs shin guard. Some elbow pads and the crotch area was added.
Pretty much all of these parts can be mirrored, so I will most likely make a cast of each and then select the best one as the final contender for the armature. The upper legs are basically finished now. If the arms and elbows turn out to my liking, then they are done as well. The lower legs will probably take most of the work to get done.

Start of a head for the primarch, don't really have anything specific in mind. Just playing around and trying out some helmet options. Helmets and faces are definetely tricky, especially "clean" loyalist ones. With chaos or corrupted versions there is a bit more wiggle room

The current state of the power pack, still need to attach the exhaust parts to the round vents and finish those off. The top border still needs to be smoothed out and then I think the only thing left is some side vents at the bottom. Probably won't do a lot of decoration as this is supposed to be a blank armature that can then be detailed later on when I make a cast.

And last but not least, the current state of the normal sized marine. I originally did joints like the one on the knee for all connections, but in the end that will just make sculpting significantly harder and prove no benefit at the end. The current model with ball joints (and magnets currently ) is more than enough to get a good pose. Although a 28mm Space Marine action figure would be hilarious as well. Maybe at a later date...

Did a quick mockup with the progress from yesterday after it was fully cured. As well as a scale shot with a primaris. I don't have any of the official Primarch models to hand, but from what I could find online the primaris are roughly 25% smaller than them. Which in this case should be more or less the scale that I have now.
Compared to the first mockup I did, I also extended the torso a bit. A simple spacer on the bottom of the chest armor did the trick. Looking at these pictures now, I will probably also thicken out the belt a bit more, otherwise out super human has more of a super model figure
The final covering of the midsection will probably be always sculpted after the cast is done, same with the elbow and knee joints.

I did like the general shape of the legs, but decided to put another layer on them to further bulk them out. Definetely happy with the outcome now.
Next for the lower legs is probably to thicken out the knee section. I'll probably to a slight angle to it, going thinner at the top. Then the only thing left is to finish off the back of the legs.
For the keen eyed among you, you might've noticed I also removed the elbow pads from the lower arms. I've decided they don't really do anything in terms of protection, so I will most likely do a small elbow part that can be fitted on later when the arm is in the final position.

All in all I'm happy with the way this is progressing. There is not that much more to do to get this to a final stage ready for making molds. The biggest challenge will be creating some helmets/ heads. Otherwise it's just some final touches on the power pack and legs plus the iconic shoulder pads.
Pretty much time to order some silicon and resion for molds and casts

@RedSarge: Yeah I ordered some Milliput to try that out. At the moment I use Greenstuff mixed with Avex Epoxy. From what I've heard it is more or less the same effect. Pure greenstuff for smooth things like armor etc. at least for me is not really enjoyable

Only a small update today, this is the new knee status. Super happy with the legs now. I'll do some more work later today to finish up the legs.

I've also added the vents and smoothed out the transition.

Thanks for the scale shot, I have been wondering about the size.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2024/02/02 14:10:55

Post by: Pneumo

@Syro: Yeah the scale is always hard to guess without any models that we know. Happy with the scale that I got with him, especially with the thick legs he looks suitably bulky.

Again, as before we only have small steps today. Can't really do huge progress jumps when only sculpting on tiny parts I did sculpt some of the vents for the power pack as well as the back of the legs.
And most importantly I had some leftover putty that I turned into a suitable head that can be the stand in until I get around to sculpting a real one

Better view of the back of the legs as well as the new booty cover.

Current elbow solution. I smushed some putty between the lower and upper arm and then sculpted out the elbow cover. Bit hard to take a picture, but now I am left with a perfect elbow cover that fits over the wire armature in the future and can be moved so it is usable both for straight and bend arms. Only needs a bit of polish and maybe a little disc for some detailing. We'll see how well I can cast this with the blue stuff I have.

I thought I could call the legs done now, but I did decide to sculpt a bit of an overhang over the sides, so that they cover the feet a bit more (I'm sure you know what I mean ). Other than that the legs are done, same with the arms, if the elbow cover casting works. Power pack is also pretty much done, just need to attach the vents and polish them up a bit.

I think the only parts left to do are:
  • thicken the waist/ belt (with belt buckle)

  • sculpt shoulder pads

  • sculpt some heads

  • I've also switched over from licking my tools for lubrication to using Nivea cream. Definetely works better for smoothing out parts that are already sticking to a model. On a side note if anyone is interested to know what Nivea cream tastes like, let me know

    Post by: Pneumo

And the primarch armature is pretty much done. Casting of the elbow guards worked fine with blue stuff, so I should have no issues with actual silicone molds. Legs got their small overhang extensions on the sides to go over the boots. The waist is now thicker and has a belt buckle.
I've sculpted one shoulder pad and then made a cast using blue stuff. I'll probably do a few variations, sculpting a border around it, layered variant, etc.

Some parts of the mock up still look a bit wonky, but I think that is mostly due to the holes and wire not lining up perfectly inside the different parts. Only thing I'm contemplating is raising the power pack a little bit so that it is more visible from the front.

The only thing missing is some decent heads and helmets.

I'll order some silicone and some resin to make some casts and then I'll have a look on what I want to create as my first primarch. Already got a folder with a bunch of art. There's a few unconventional ones in there as well, so stay tuned

Some scale shots with various Space Marines. Depending on the Primarch obviously the size would change slightly, but I think this is a good base
    Spoiler:

The firstborn snap fit marines are tiny compared to him Forgot to take a picture of the human figure I have, but it is the same size as the snap fit marine.
So normal human goes right to the waist.

the denurglified Death Guard marine is also the right height for the model.

Primaris go to roughly the middle of the chest. Seems a good size, same as the GW models, the primaris are 25% smaller.

Small update for today. I may not have the final silicone and resin for good molds and castings, but I do have some silicon putty. It's a two part putty that has about a 1 minute working time where it is super soft and then it cures into silicone. So naturally I had to make a mold of everything and do a few casts with miliput. The molds are not perfect and the casting with miliput is a bit challenging as I need to put more or less the exact amount of putty into the molds.
I've tried to stick to one part molds, but for the lower legs, chest, boots and shoulder I had to make a two part mold. The legs and shoulder where held up by some other sculpting putty to "split" them in half for the molds.

This is the current stash of molds and casts from it. I forgot the power pack and the elbow guard, so those will be done today. Then I will do a real assembly and sculpt myself the first prototype Primarch

Half of the lower leg covered in putty to make a better two part mold.

Unfortunately I did not get the power pack cast yet, but I did decide on a character for my primarch.
Started some work on the helmet as well as his weapon
Despite the appearance it will not be a nurgle character

And here we have the first mock up of the new primarch. The armature works super well, I have tons of freedom to position the mini, I'll glue up the different limbs once I'm happy with the position.
I'll then sculpt some final details on the mini to make it unique and more ornate before attaching the arms and legs. Might even keep the arms seperate for easier painting.
The left shoulder with the holes will get filled with spikes

    Scale shot

And the current state that I am at right now. Got all the joints filled in, except for around the feet. Did a bit of detail work on one leg and the chest (and a tiny bit on the sword).
The power pack was finally cast, although I did cut off the round vents and made some that look more like the older marks. No spikes on the shoulder for now, decided to go for studs instead.

The pose is more or less final, I will try to keep the arms seperate to help with painting later on. The second elbow is currently curing so will soon be attached.

Next steps are finishing the head, sculpting the hands and adding a "skirt" (this wil cover the left leg, so no need to detail that one). Once that is done, all the needed stuff is done, only thing left then is to add whatever details I feel like.

@tzurk: Don't worry, the derpy face is not going anywhere! He will return for each and every Primarch sculpted from now on and I did not even see the face on the back, but now I cannot unsee it

@ Boss Salvage: Thanks! For the actual Primarchs I'm leaning towards 30k and/ or a Loyalist version. I might even to a loyalist and heresy version of each one, could be fun to try out. There's a couple of alternative Heresy stories out there that have some fantastic art (Lionel Heresy in particular has some great ideas). We'll see where it takes me

In terms of progress, I've been a little productive. I finished one of the hands as well as the joints for the feet. I also attached some more studs to the left leg for some detailing (the other detail came off, might glue it back on or do something else). I had some leftover putty, so I decided to also sculpt him a "tiny" (same size as an old Space Marine ) Morgul blade, just in case he needs to stab Frodo again.
Last step was adding the cheeks to the helmet, definetely gives it more character already, but still a bit to do.

Now we have two versions that I could go with.
Version 1: No skirt and the Morgul blade attached to his left leg. I'm currently leaning towards this one myself, as more of the actual miniature/armature sculpt is visible.

Version 2: Giving him his skirt, maybe also throwing the Morgul blade over it somewhere. I'd still do some more detailing on the skirt if I'd stick with this one.

And last but not least the current state of the head

As always, let me know what you think and which version of him you prefer!

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2024/02/15 14:24:34

    Post by: Pneumo

And the current state of affairs. I have decided against both versions

I instead opted to put the Morgul Blade on his back as a bit of decoration, plus I'm sure he could reach it if there are Hobbits that need stabbing.

The rest of the changes are once again rather small, but I think they will help in making each "cast" unique compared to the others. For this model I've changed the shape of the knees to be a bit more angular.
A slightly bigger change that I will move across to the master model as well is the thicker belt. I feel like the waist now looks considerably better than before. I will also have to thicken the armor parts of the groin area then for the master model.

The other changes are that both hands are now done and capped off with a nice flat armor plate on top.

Honestly this will probably be the last update for him, the only thing that's still missing and will take a bit of work is his head. I've scratched some of the sculpt I already had and redid the central spike to be more prominent. The small spikes I will add back in afterwards as round spikes, smiliar to the helmet in the movie.
I've also started work on a scenic lava base, if all goes well I might enter the finished model into the monthly painting challenge and paint him up for that.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2024/02/18 13:55:11

    Post by: Pneumo

And I am finally calling him done! Took quite a while from start to finish but I am happy with the end result. For the "real" primarchs I will spend some more time on customizing the armor and adding lots of details and decoration. But for this one I wanted to see what the "naked" armor would look like as a finished model with only a few extra details.
Super happy with how he turned out, but I also learned a few things that I will adjust for future sculpts. I've mentioned the thicker waist and I think I will also stop using the cast elbow pads and just sculpt some on after the under armor ribbing is done. These ones just look a bit too small and sculpting new ones would not be the biggest effort.

I already have him with his base coat on sitting on my desk. He'll be entered into the monthly painting challenge and I will try my hand at some OSL from the lava base (pictures will follow, need to pick up some texture/ cracking paint first).

And here are the last unpainted pictures of our friend
Left the arms off for this one so you can see the new and final head.

And this is with arms on, although you can see the head was not finished here, still had to fill up the gaps where I drilled holes for the spikes.

@youwashock: Those two are definetely my two favorite parts as well Apart from the fact of how well it all went together and the posability of it

I've done some painting on my fellow and this is the current status. Started off with the base layers of each color and a bit of sponging lighter green on the armor.
Next step was drybrushing the two OSL effects. Not quite sure if I like it or not.

Would still need to finish the lava base and the sword plus a few details, but I am seriously contemplating just scratching the OSL and going for a grimdark style insted.

The things I do: Now painting custom primarch  @ 2024/02/27 09:35:42

    Post by: Pneumo

And I've decided to scratch the OSL for now and have gone with a grimdark approach to the model. I've seen this online and wanted to try it for some time. It's certainly a different look with the dark edge "highlights".
Definetely happy with how it is coming along.

The power sword blade is pretty much done, same with all the armor. The helmet still needs a bit of love and then the rest of the details still need to be done (studs, Legion symbol etc.)
There's also a bit more work to be done on the base, but overall I think I prefer it this way. The cracks were not really big enough for the super bright OSL source that I originally had in mind. I will definetely try it again in the future with a new base and model though.

I really like the sponged armor and happy to see more of it now that the OSL is out. I do think the base lets the mini down, with that huge black lump, but it sounds like more detail is coming in that regard? Nice mirrored blade!

    Glad you like it
Honestly I also was not sold on the mini on the base as a whole but couldn’t quite put my finger on why. Now that you’ve said it though I can’t really unsee it. I didn’t really have anything planned for the rest of the base.

My bits box is currently stashed deep in my basement unfortunately
I think I will play around with adding a few skulls, cork bits and faulty casts from the primarch parts to make a 30k style base.

    Thanks for opening my eyes

And I’ve decided to go for a new base…

This one is a bit higher, will have more stone structure on top and only a bit of lava. And since I’m apparently a lunatic, I’ve also decided use one of the few models I had lying around for a pressmold and some sculpting work to create a SciFi ringbearer. Unfortunately for him though he got caught and or corrupted before he was able to destroy the ring for good

Now I only need to finish his arms, hands, legs, fill the gaps in his torso and then paint everything until the end of the month…
    Should be fun

And space Frodo (just chilling without a worry in his world )

And he is done, might not be super visible but space Frodo has a little ring around his neck (more visible in the WIP pictures below)

And for the next project we have the painting challenge for March and I will try to sculpt up a Helldiver for it
Will be based on this guy, which I did a simple mold of.

Nicely done on the base! Good use of that space to tell a suspiciously familiar story
