I think it's a metaphor for a state of being. I "Reach Monarch" shortly after my third cup of coffee.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yeah, I'm not done with this yet. The phrase is just too much fun without context.

"Reach Monarch, you will have to hold off the category 5 kaiju until reinforced by Crisp Berserk and Mauve Impregnable! Do it for Blast Petticoat!"

Run it through a thesaurus and you get some great college nicknames: Contact King, Grasp Queen, Stetch Regent, Prince Extend...

I don't think The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. the Monarch will be very much help against Godzilla.

Isn't Monarch the name of the organization that researched Kaiju/Godzilla in the first one? Was that the organization John Goodman founder in Kong: Skull Island? I only saw both movies once, so I do not recall.

Reach Monarch sounds like a villain in a Speed Racer show...... crosses fingers for a Speed Racer II Movie from the Wachowski's ....

Post by: VictorVonTzeentch

Monarch is the Agency/Institute that is responsible for the research on the Kaiju. Ken Watanabe was with Monarch in Godzilla 2014 and John Goodman was the leader (or maybe just a Senior Representative) of Monarch at the time of Kong: Skull Island. At the end of Skull Island the other two members of Monarch from the film show Loki and Captain Marvel that Kong is just one of the Kaiju they know about now, with them showing cave drawings of Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah and Godzilla, plus a couple of the "nuclear test" Images of Godzilla.

Damn. They're already going Independence Day on the world in the second Godzilla movie?

I'm trying to understand how the "titans" are supposed to save the world as described by the scientist, unless it's the standard "Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla versus Ghidorah" plotline.

I would be down for that honestly. It is simple and fits with the major themes for the Kaiju.

I was reading one person said they saw Gamera in there as well. Is this true?

Wait so you have seen Godzilla 2-32 plus the American ones and this trailer shows a premise too ridiculous for you to watch it?

This smacks of forced contrarianism.

The trailer shows a surprising amount of restraint considering most trailers. I know monsters are in it and I know some of the ones in it but the only one we see any really clear shot of is Godzilla itself (which we saw in the last movie).

Is it Godzilla as 1 of 4 monsters? 5? 8?

Can't say. Kong could easily be in the movie and we just don't know it yet.

The last Godzilla movie ranks as one of my highest "unexpected" good films. I thought it was going to be complete and utter gak, and I really enjoyed it. Thought it was as good a Godzilla movie as you could make with today's tropes (which are sadly still inescapable). Just fun, well filmed, and very cool.

So, I expected a similarly awesome launch of Kong: Skull Island...but it was one of the shittiest films I've seen i a long time. The polar opposite of my experience with the Godzilla film.

So, I'm 1-1...I'll see this Godzilla film, but I'm hoping it's not the burning turd that Kong: Skull Island became.

I thought Skull Island was a fantastic moive - sadly this looks more like the truely awful last Godzilla movie

(stupid characters, bad effects, boring story, pretending to be tense by not haqving the monster of screen - hated it)

Not even a mention of Kong and Oh so serious whilst actually being as silly as any other monster movie.

Kong is due to be in the *next* Godzilla movie, I think?

A podcast I was listening too suggested that they do a prequel where Godzilla fights a whole swarm of Kongs just breathing atomic breath and lighting them on fire by the dozens. It's why Kong is the only one left lol.

That sounds...awful.

But possibly better with whatever they come up with to get Kong up to Godzilla size!

Kong in Skull Island wasn't an adult. He was apparently the equivalent of a 10-year old human.

[Godzilla] King of the Monsters - First Trailer @ 2018/07/23 02:15:54

Post by: Mysterio

I don't remember that being stated! Interesting if true - but I still don't think that means he'd grow 'big enough' to matter to Godzilla.

BUT, that's probably not actually that important - if it needs to happen for the movie to happen, it will happen!

Kinda means that Godzilla is going to survive this movie (duh), as Godzilla vs. Kong is slated for 2020.

It's indirectly stated when you see how big the skeletons of his parents are and they are monstrously larger than kong.

That being said they are nowhere near Godzilla sized.

Seems to be missing the things that always drew me to Godzilla movies as a kid in the trailer. I came to see giant monsters cut loose, hopefully in a city. I liked the last movie, except for most of the human parts that don't involve Ken Watanabe saying "Let them fight".

They should have had way more Brian Cranston running around yelling "THERES A GOD DAMN MONSTER!". The fact that hes only in the first 1/3rd of the movie is to its detriment.

Its a very bizare trailor and nonsense narrative.

Humans are bad m'kay
Monsters are natures defense mechanism or something
Humans need to be crushed or something
Cos Monsters have Earth Power and can sort it out and not just blow stuff up.
Titans not monsters

Skull island with young Kong was basically - Monsters are a force of nature but not that they are a "good" ofr bad thing - they just are. More along the lines of the Cthulhu Mythos - evything is fine until the rightful rulers of the world wake up and wipe out humanity without really noticing before goping ton to do wihatever they normally do - which is a bit different to the above.

Humans are unreliable narrators in this (and most things). Nobody spouting that gak actually knows anything. They are just people saying what they think.

So, like me as a kid, you were drawn to things that happened maybe half of the time the films were running? Because going back and watching those movies as an adult there is an awful lot of no monsters on the screen in a lot of those films. Just a lot of politicians, soldiers and aliens. So Godzilla 2014 was right in my expected wheel house. I would have perfered more of Brian Cranston and Ken Watanabe as the main characters with Navy guy being a B-plot. But it worked for adult me, kid me would have just been indifferent on everything not a Giant Monster.

To touch on the "Humans are bad" theme. That one sounds like a pretty comon theme from some of the Godzilla movies, remember some of the monsters are creatures of our own unintintional creation. Sounds like here they are just making the monsters to counter balance humanity. Even then, some of the scientests could just be crazy.

You got that right!

This version of Godzilla is 300 feet tall.

This version of Kong (Teen Kong?) is 100 feet tall.

I guess he could still grow another 200 feet...?

I mean, it is a Kaiju movie after all!

I think the monolgue we hear in the trailer is that of a villain explaining why she wants to destroy the world. The movie will almost certainly be crazy scientist mom thinks Ghidorah is a "titan" that will save the earth by killing humans but her daughter, the girl from Stranger Things, figures out that Ghidorah isn't from earth at all and Godzilla and friends defeated and trapped him a gazillion years back. Now she has to wake up Rodan and Mothra in order to help Big G take out King Ghidorah and stop evil/crazy mom.

Wasnt that the plot for one of the older Movies? Maybe sub Rodan for one of the others.

I know there was the one in the early 2000's where it was Mothra, Ghidorah and Baragon (I think) vs Godzilla (as the Badguy) but I get the feeling they did Godzilla and Mothra vs Ghidorah.

Either way, its probably Crazy Scientist Mom or Evil Charles Dance (or both, I mean Charles Dance is generally a badguy). I mean the mom's speech did have everyone in that room being all like "You what?"

Wasn't there a point in Skull Island where they mention that Kong has noticeably grown in just the couple days since they first met him? It could have just been hyperbole, or that means Kong was in one mean growth spurt. It would explain him wanting to munch on an octopus, though I didn't hear his voice crack, and I didn't see any acne.

Godzilla, Motha, Rodan vs Ghidorah happened in one of the 1964 Godzilla movies. This will probably be an updated version of that movie.

I also think it is funny thatbone persons dialogue is ruining this for people.

What Godzilla movies have you been watching that DIDN'T have a ridiculous premise?

You remind me of a friend who went to see the American Godzilla movie with me. His main criticism was "They should have done more with the plot."

My reply was to the point. "It's a Godzilla movie. Watching a 500' long lizard stomp on New York WAS the plot. If you wanted more, you were in the wrong theater!"

I just had a thought about how Godzilla 2 could effect the plot of Godzilla vs Kong.

What if the Godzilla in GvsK isn't the same Godzilla? What if the Godzilla we know from the 2014 movie is fatally injured in King of the Monsters, and the one fighting Kong is just a half-sized offspring? That would also help narrow the size gap.

Sounds a bit like the subplot of the Netflix Godzilla anime.

There was a lesser Godzilla that they fought.....and then came to find out that the real Godzilla decided to show up.

The Kong in Skull Island takes place in the 70's. GodZ:KOM is supposed to be happening now in current time frame. Kong will have grown plenty in those 40+ years. Ready to take him on in 2020.

Right, we know this.

He's going to have to grow 200 feet to match Godzilla.

I'm sure he's up to the task.

So was my brother. He had this toy:

Which could flap its wings, and pick up stuff in its claws. Overall I think it was a much cooler toy than mine, which didn't really look like Godzilla. Its firey breath/tongue was also really underwhelming, and its launchable fist was kind of baffling.

Looks good - can't wait to see Mothra get fragged (but, of course, survive on as her stinky little caterpillars will certainly be shown scuttling away!) - I'm worried about Rodan surviving, but I certainly hope so!

We already know the Big G is going to make it out alive!

I'm actually more worried that there will be too much talky talky compared to good ol' fashioned Kaiju on Kaiju madness, but either way, I'll be there on day one!

Quoting me from July? Hey ... I was young back then, and I needed the money ... (wait ... wrong forum).

Anyway, I didn't know MBB back then - I only got round to Stranger Things last week, and that was only because of the game (which is fething excellent).

I'm a fickle soul, and will defo watch it just because of MBB (in a non-weird way!).

Is this related to Skull Island the truely awfuil Godzilla movie prior to it? No sign of Kong.

Might be alright - tailer was a bit meh - monsters looked fat and slow, waiting fror heads to flop about uselessly - I recall the old Japanese movies being funny but I would have thought they could do it better now!

I strongly suspect we will see both Rodan and Mothra “die” in this picture. Mothra will of course actually die but leave behind eggs from which the next Mothra shall be born. Rodan’s “death” scene, by contrast, may be more of a sham: perhaps one of two Rodans is killed or perhaps Rodan is “killed” by plunging into an erupting volcano or similar, which turns out to be something more like going into hibernation to heal. In any event, both of these will either be swatted by Godzilla or King Ghidorah in order to demonstrate the strength of those two. My preference would be seeing King Ghidorah defeat Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra in separate fights then seeing some kind of team-up fight against Ghidorah in which Rodan and Mothra support Godzilla, allowing the real king to reclaim his throne.

I'm still holding out hope that eventually the Criterion Collection and Sony would eventually gain the complete rights to distribute all Godzilla films from the Showa Era to the Heisei Era and Millennium Era respectively. Either that, or just have one company distribute the entire Godzilla film library in the states, but I have a feeling that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

Well, sure, point taken, a giant moth is inherently weird.

Helps to give Mothra some effective limbs if you want it to be able to mix it up physically onscreen. Classic Mothra ain't very dynamic.

I think they wanted to move away from "this is just a giant moth" to "a creature that got called Mothra because it's wings look like a moth".

I know that this is a monster-fight movie, so you really need some suspension of disbelief, but having a giant moth-like creature is easier to swallow that simply a giant moth.

Yes, good point — but I think this is also an issue with Mothra, she’s not really meant to be a fighter in the same sense as Godzilla and Rodan, et al. She’s more of an avatar of peace and guardianship. But now she looks like she’s in for a tussle. Just weird.

I know it just makes me sad as I always liked Rodan as a kid. His update isn't really a radical change like Mothra so there really isn't as much to discuss there either. He was in a volcano at the end of the original film iirc so there is that I guess.

If viewed through the lens of 'today', a lot of things from the 50's look pretty ridiculous!

Just look at some of the hi-jinks everyone was up to in some of these clips:

I have a riddle for everyone.

What happens when you take Serj Tankian

Have him backed by Dethklok and a full orchestra

Throw in a side of Taiko drumming with a bit of a mens choir

And have them cover Blue Öyster Cult?

The answer?

You get this...
Spoiler:

There is also this. Takes a few cues from some old G songs

I cannot even begin to explain how insanely excited I am for this movie. Like, it could be utter dog gak and I wouldn't care.

S.H. Monster Arts has apparently revealed their toy line for the movie. So you can get some pretty clear looks at the designs of the monsters if your interested in seeing them not surround by color filters and cgi smoke.

Toys actually look REALLY good with a lot of possibility in them.

Rodan looks to have some awesome moments in this movie - but he's probably high up on the 'Most Likely to get Whacked by Ghidorah" list too.

Though personally I'd have Anguirus and Kumonga on that list before Rodan.

Actually, I wouldn't have Rodan on that list at all!

Mothra should (and will!) get killed...

Well, I'll kick it off--I really enjoyed the film. There's a lot of human-scale stuff, but it's almost always about the monsters and where they're going and when there's a monster fight going on, it never felt to me like it was cutting away for too long. Ghidorah was really good, coming across as a primal force of destruction with just enough personality to qualify as a villain. The monster fights are well...choreographed? In that it never feels like just two scaly mountains bumping into each other, but there's some clever tactics and surprises, with the cutaways to human-scale characters reminding the audience of the scale of what's going on.

There's a post-credits scene, but nothing too critical in it.
Spoiler:
Maybe setting up Mechagodzilla?

See, I felt let down. I know that most people don't watch these for the plot, but it is supposed to have one beyond 'Godzilla is going here'. Anything beyond that the actors struggle to portray as something that humans would actually SAY. It makes Godzilla Vs Megalon look like high fething Shakespearean Drama.

Spoiler:
Also, a bomb with a timer needs ABSOLUTELY NO ONE to STAY WITH IT. IT HAS A fething TIMER AND THERE *IS NO MANUAL DETONATOR*

Mecha King Ghidorah most likely, but it could also be setting up Destroyah since it was torn off in the area where the Oxygen Destroyer bomb went off as well.

I loved the movie myself, but I'm also a big King Ghidorah fan and the movie was basically "King Ghidorah the love song"

The film was neither good not bad. It was OK. I enjoyed the callbacks to the classic film scores. The monster fights were fun but there wasn’t enough brawling, just finishing move after finishing move. The human stuff was largely boring, as usual. i give it a C.

Saw it in theater (which is rare enough for me) with the wife today, and this is fairly spot on.

Without going in to spoilers, the plot is quite predictable, but not really in a bad way. Some stuff gets super telegraphed what will happen (and I don't mean foreshadowing here) and no surprise it does. Bit of humor/levity in spots so its not all GrimDark.

I especially liked the end and the possibilities it opens up for the future.

Seen it day before yesterday, and it's awesome! Granted, I do agree with what you said in regarding to the acting, and by extension the plot and the script. (Though if you're there for the acting/plot/script, one might wonder why you're watching a Kaiju movie in the first place )

you mean, those crazy things that make good movies?

The issue is that it should not be that way. It most certainly does not HAVE to be. If you need an example of this, I point you to Kong: Skull Island

The run time is so drawn out that the entire film could have been about a half hour long, instead of two hours. If all you want is a highlight film of WWE style monster smackdown, buy Godzilla for PS 4, you'll get more for your money.

I think that if WB is looking to create a franchise of films, they need to look into make them not only about Giant Monster, but also GOOD.

Puh-leaze. KSI was absolute garbage compared to Jackson's Kong. If it doesn't show savages delving into the Deepest, Darkest Africa tropes, it's not a Kong movie. Kong is thematically synonymous with White Savior tropes, and failing to play them up is an absolute failure on the part of any director. Total failure to understand the source material. It's the American GINO, but with Kong.

I am not looking forward to Godzilla Kong, unless Kong gets the GINO treatment from Final Wars.

It helps that the movie is practically a love letter to Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster in it's own way.

Honestly, I love my monster action films. It seems the audience scores are quite good for it as well at this point in time even if the critics aren't thrilled.

People who are rating are probably like me, they went to see monsters fight and whenever humans are on the screen it’s just like, uh get back to the monsters please.

Many cuts away from the fights to the dumb boring humans really irritated me in this movie. But there was so much more monster fighting than in Godzilla 2014 so that was great.

At least the human parts were just cheesy additions to the monster bits. Serizawa always seems to amuse me just how seriously he managed to make every single line sound.

But yes, I was there for the Kaiju. I went for two hours of WWE Kaiju wrestling. I got what I went for and then some.

I absolutely loved it, but you need to know up front that the bar for me to like a monster movie, and especially Godzilla movie is very, very low. I am not impartial in any way.

Some of the human drama was stupid, but I don't care about the human drama at all. To me, they are only there in my mind to set the stage for the next monster scene. That being said, if you get Charles Dance, you gotta do something better with him.

One of the negative reviews I read said it looked like the whole movie had been run through a blue Instagram filter. This is accurate, they are totally guilty of this. The color grading is pretty extreme.

I agree some of the fights could have been a little lengthier and less... extreme, I guess? Like Manchu said, more regular old punches would have been cool.

I loved the way Ghidorah looked and moved, especially when he kinda slithered one head at one point towards the end. I also liked when the heads would "bicker" with each other a little Visually it was amazing.

Spoiler:
I don't really remember Rodan being a dick when I was a kid. He was kind of a baddie! And then when he bowed, I knew exactly which baddie - Starscream.

I think the reason he stayed was that in getting that close and placing it, he took lethal radiation. I think it was an allegory for the old people volunteering to help clean up Fukishima.

I'll repeat what I told a friend of mine after we went to go see one of the earlier Godzilla movies.

"Dude, a 500' lizard stomping on Tokyo WAS the plot. If you wanted more, you were in the wrong theater."

I submit, you're expecting things out of kaiju movies they're not designed to deliver. You were simply in the wrong theater for what you wanted.

First of all, Jackson's King Kong was an abomination of a movie. Second, Kong in Skull Island was a metaphor for every brown enemy in a jungle the US ever fought. Instead of sacrificing a blonde starlet, the US sacrificed its innocence/moral high ground/sanity/I don't know, but Samuel L Jackson nailed it.

I'd take KSI over JacksonKong any day. I'd take King Kong Lives over JacksonKong.

King Kong Escapes ruled, too.

That was legit one of the worst films I've ever seen. I would probably rank it alongside Independence Day Resurgence for quality. If it's possible it seemed like there was somehow even less kaiju fighting than the 2014 film. The movie is chock full of stupid human crap as if the director forgot the monsters are the whole point of movies like this. You probably never see more than 5 seconds of kaiju fighting at once before a cutaway to someone doing or saying something stupid.

I feel the same even though Endgame is a better movie by pretty much every metric. The problem there is that at this point, pretty much all of the Marvel movies feel the same to me. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - because I love them all - but I don't exactly get excited for them anymore either. It's like having a piece of delicious chocolate cake every Tuesday. Ouze, I would be surprised if that’s what was going on because in the past the only time Mechagodzilla had a biological component (Kiryu), it was from GodIlla rather than his enemy. I would bet the severed head will tie into the regenerative power angle we saw in this movie.

I'd imagine we will meet the aliens before we get Mechagodzilla. Since it was confirmed that King Ghidorah was an Alien entity that means there could be another planet of Titan's or humanlike aliens that could create their own.

Since we never got an actual explanation for how King Ghidorah got a ride to the planet in the movie aside from "He's here, but he came from the skies"

Just finished watching it with the wife and I have to say as a 30 year fan of Godzilla (since I was 5-6 years old) I was insanely satisfied. Well. I fell asleep through most of it. Saw a couple scraps before hand and then the big one at the end. If there was wall-to-wall monster bust-ups in between it would have been good fun. If there wasn't it was probably a bad film.

Fun to see Charles Dance back doing full-tilt scenery-chewing like the Last Action Hero glory days.

I loved it. Yes the human element is meh but that's par for every Gozilla film ever. Humans wax over some sort of philosophical or political ideal that is abstractly tied to Godzilla either causing or standing against, cue city destruction.

I agree that two straight hours of carnage would be cool to watch, but it just wouldn't work as a film. It's very hard to keep long fights going and the viewer engaged for more than a short stretch. I do feel they could do a much better job with trying to make the human side of Godzilla films work, but aside from the B&W original I don't think any of them have hit that bar successfully nor do I expect it to happen. You don't go to Godzilla films for in depth plot lines, it's all about the action and tropes.

I saw it today a one probably went in with too high of expectations. Enjoyed it and it’s much much better throughout than the last one but I felt like everything great was in the trailers. No where near as dull as the last but nothing as awesome as atomic breathing down the mutos throat either. Still good stuff overall though.

Saw it yesterday afternoon and enjoyed it very much. The human story plot elements was enough to link the monster battles together.

Spoiler:

Was there an abandoned plot element about Madison 'bonding' with the Titans. The hand reaching out to Mothra and Gidorah? Why was Madison 'up' at the Mothra hatching?
Monarch/US military seemed to have a major tech upgrade. Maybe the aliens are among us already.
Hmm. Atlantis (or an equivalent) being thrown into the mix- why not, I guess.

I also loved the bickering heads (and the slithering in the final battle) as said before. I'm not sure what Jonah is going to do with the Gidorah head - it was the 'stupid' one. My guess is that in Kong v Godzilla they duke it out before settling their differences and teaming up against a regenerated Gidorah.

Shame to see Wantanabe and Hawkins leave the franchise. Dr Graham got a mundane exit for someone who, although not a front-line character, wasn't 'third scientist' either.

The human plotlines weren't just boring, they were actively irritating and brought down the movie as a whole. Every single character with the exception of Tywin Lannister was a boring caricature at best and annoying at worst- and Charles Dance was only okay because he had such little material to work with that it was impossible for him to feth it up.

And it's weird to me that so many defenders of the film are saying that the human element doesn't matter, it's about the monsters anyway, etc when the monsters aren't on-screen and the humans are all we get for about 70% of the film. I'd wager that in this 2 hour movie there's about 30 minutes of total monster screentime. That's an hour and a half of watching the awful MC hiss and wheeze at the camera (what was up with the delivery of this guy's lines?) and 11 run around unchecked for the entire film with the grown adults completely incapable of stopping her for some reason.

Yeah the monster scenes were great. The sound design was great (that hum when Godzilla uses his atomic breath, dude), the special FX were great, the designs of the monsters was awesome. But I don't see how I could possibly recommend someone to watch this movie in theaters rather then on youtube or a home theater, so they could FF through the majority of the film. The characters were terrible, the pacing was awful, one of the most yawn-inspiring third quarters of a film I've seen in awhile, etc. Just seriously weak writing across the board. It actually reminds me a lot of Batman vs Superman DoJ in regards to the contrast between the fun of the fight scenes and the mediocrity of everything else.

Spoiler:
No, seriously. Why would a group of cold-blooded, murdering terrorists allow this 13 year old girl to run around unchecked throughout their entire facility? Especially when she had already shown a penchant for snatching stuff/being impulsive. The first time, when she snatched that guy's clearance pass in the beginning, I was like w/e. The second time, when she snatched the GIANT MONSTER MIND CONTROL DEVICE out of her mom's hands and everyone just kind of stood around and stared at her, I rolled my eyes. The third time, when she snatched the giant monster mind control device AGAIN, because these terrorists never thought to have a security guard or even just a locked door nearby to protect it, I was ready to walk out of the theater lol.

I almost feel bad for enjoying this film now. I saw it in theatres, and I'd recommend seeing it in theatres although there wasn't nearly enough gunfire to make the d-box seats worth it. I like how the human characters offset and added context to the giant monster action. I especially liked the comment about flipper babies.

Spoiler:
As for good deaths, I'd imagine everyone in the Osprey at the end is going to die of cancer very shortly.

Also, someone needs to put Aisha Hinds front and centre in a big budget movie. She's gorgeous.

Saw it...thoughts in the spoiler.

Spoiler:
This was a completely mediocre movie. Didn't intrigue or interest me anywhere near as much as the first Godzilla film...but it wasn't the flaming dumpster fire that was Kong. This was a rushed, wildly over CGI'ed and predictable movie. I didn't hate it, but I found myself looking around the theater. Was not engrossed or distracted enough at all. It would make a great movie on Netflix for a bored evening.

It's good in its own way. Like Rambo, the Godzilla series became something very different from the excellent first movie, and fan expectations will generally fall on how the series became rather than where it started.

Well, I saw it and I enjoyed it - quite a bit!

Even made me care about/like Mothra - and that's no mean feat!

One thing which I found odd at the end:

Spoiler:
Didn't eco-terrorist Alan Jonah get his wish in the end?

Millions of people probably got whacked.

The earth is strangely healing in the wake of all the Kaiju roaming around, spreading their monster-wave radiation, as seen in end-credit scroll newsclips.

What's his game with the Ghidorah head?

Does he think that not enough people were killed?

And while I suppose it is an honor to have your city trashed in a Kaiju film, man, someone has it out for Boston, and the Red Sox!

Yep. The original film was a metaphor for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and the evils of nuclear warfare. It was quite brilliant for it's time.

And yes, the sequels became something very different from that original metaphor, becoming a sub-genre of the action-adventure movie instead of the deep philosphical examination of Gojira.

The Sequels maintains the heavy focus on the Human characters though, that never went away. To my knowledge there were only a couple that were extremely limited in human interaction. Those were the one that have Minilla and the kid, and Final Wars.

The former, is probably the worst Godzilla movie to come out of Japan. The latter is probably in the "So bad its good category."

I love Final Wars. It knows exactly what kind of movie it is. It's brilliant in its own way.

My favorite Godzilla movies tend to have very stylized human scenes that know what kind of movies they're in, such as a Final Wars, Monster 0, Biollante, Skull Island, and terror of Mechagodzilla. This latest movie has some characters like that, the military people, sidekick scientists and Charles Dance, but the main humans just dragged.

Technically. . . I mean yeah, Kong Skull Island is in the same universe. . . but they didn't play "Godzilla" by BOC (or some remix of it) in the end credits, so not a "godzilla" movie within that specific series. . . ATM, I'd liken Kong to the Han Solo movie: we all know its in the same universe, and somewhere on the timeline, but it isn't a part of a main trilogy.

I'm guessing someone involved was one as well, and didn't like what happened last year either! (Or maybe even in '04!)

Still wondering how Kong is going to get upgraded so that he can at least maybe reach up to Godzilla's waist?

I mean, Big G has got about 300 feet (!) on him...

EDIT!

Well, this was...boring. It reminded me of some latter-day Peter Jackson movies, or Transformer movies that there was way too much going on. Heavy-handed ecological message, tacked-on human family drama, tons of characters with not enough to do to define their characters or justify their existence in the movie.

2014 Godzilla and to some extent, Skull Island, were much simpler movies. Particularly in the first, director concentrated to, well, direct the movie, setting up scenes and shots so they looked, sounded and felt great. Godzilla wasn't on screen much, but when he was, it was throughly awesome. By contrast here we had monster overload, they were popping up left and right so sense of marvel was gone quite quickly. All the attempts to set up emotional highs fell flat because there were too many of them. And the plot was much too contrived even for a monster flick.

And yeah, what's with the blue toning? It's as if they started shooting "Hey, we only brought blue filters. -Oh I am not walking back to warehouse to search other filters, we shoot with these."

Also, I am REALLY sick of the following cliches:
-extremely specific technical malfunction which forces characters to do in person something incredibly dangerous which otherwise would be simple
-people looking at something extremely dangerous for a minute, standing still with their mouths open like idiots and only starting to run away when the really dangerous thing is right on top of them
-Aircraft armed with weapons with dozens of km's range coming within touching distance of the target.

Pretty much...I didn't want to go too heavily into what I didn't like, but my brother asked me about it, and my response was "painfully mediocre". Which is almost worse than being bad in many ways. There's a joy and catharsis in seeing something so utterly gak (read: Battlefield Earth levels of gak) and partaking in the conversations to that effect. There's also joy in celebrating something that brings joy to your life. And then there's...stuff like this. Did I waste my $6.75 or my two hours? Nah. Will I remember anything about this movie in three weeks time? Unlikely. Would I watch it on Netflix out of boredom in three years? Perhaps.

You nailed a lot of the critiques though. Just a really flat movie with a bunch of CGI flash and convoluted plot elements.

In many ways I actually like 1998 Godzilla. Sure, as a Gojira movie, it is certainly GINO, creature design not all that great, some positively awful acting and so on. But as a generic monster flick - or actually, say, Jurassic Park film - it is quite well set up and directed movie. At the time, French nuclear tests were still fresh up in peoples minds so it was clever to employ them as plot device. Monster was revealed gradually and maintained some aura of mystery. Human drama was kept at moderate levels and they didn't try to go for tacky tear-jerking or putting stupid kids in peril. I feel if they just had put some more thought in casting it and not called it 'Godzilla', it would have been regarded as one of the classics of the genre. Instead legions of Godzilla fans went into movie, saw a wimpy skinny lizard running away from the military and came out full of nerd rage about the film whichs main star was not even remotely Godzilla-like.

I maintain it is a decently directed film, with ok basic script. Much of the cast was bad, though, with too many attempts to campy comedy. As a Godzilla film, sure, it's total failure, capturing essentially none of the original characters spirit. In fact it is more influenced by Jurassic Park than Godzilla.

If you replace all instances of 'Godzilla' from the film with 'Indosaurus', and replace atomic origin with genetic meddling, it would fit right into current Jurassic World continuity.

Saw this yesterday and would firmly agree with the sentiments of it being very mediocre.
The CGI was decent but darn dark in places especially the end fight, characters were ok but paper thin, too much focus on meaningless and frankly boring human plots and not enough royal rumbling from the monsters.
Also Godzillas snout was waaaay off, he looked almost simian which is fail.

Mothra was cool however and the underwater sub/nuke scene was decently done. At least it had a bit of heart to it.

Something I really enjoyed about the movie is how it brought it back to a nuclear allegory, which is pretty topical given how nuclear is one of those things that could be a very green technology with the right logistics, and that handled badly can go horribly, horribly wrong.

So it's interesting that they try the nuke as a desperation move, because it's not like they can kill Godzilla any worse than he already is, with a very eco-feminist position that while saving the planet is nice doing so a waste of time if people aren't around to enjoy it. Maybe Godzilla could have taken Ghidorah in the ocean, and maybe not. The oxygen-destroyer is a nice call-out.

In the first movie there's a considerable amount of effort put into making sure Godzilla (and the MUTOs) don't get nuked, ostensibly to protect the Bay Area. That they feed off of radiation is a plot point, but nukes aren't just radiation. So it's a bit of a stretch that setting off the nuke will help restore her, after Godzilla retreats to a radioactive lair, but then it's a Godzilla movie so stuff like the Pacific Rim's "It's analog" and "pure iron" is just fine. If that's where you draw the line you've gone full Kurtz. The logic can be as fuzzy as a gieger counter stuck between Godzilla's toes.

So at the end when Godzilla goes critical, and I loved the count-down for building my tension, and it's like "It's turns out the monster is Godzilla after all."

Wow this movie was a stinker. I just saw it tonight and I definitely see why it's bombing at the box office in the US. The characters make such stupid decisions on the fly that they'd leave a horny teenager in a slasher flick scratching their head at the lack of common sense and the monster special effects look Eragon-level bad at times with (I kid you not) overly dramatic squirrel meme cinematography on the monsters multiple times throughout the film. Characters "acting" during a scene where they're enduring a category 5 hurricane simultaneously with a 9.0 earthquake while ground zero 9/11 violence is going on next to them look like it's instead a moderately rainy and windy day off of the coast of New Hampshire and they're filming a Gordon's fish fillet commercial instead of experiencing first hand the end of the world. Total garbage... and I typically enjoy these sorts of movies. It's not so bad it's good bad but rather WTF just plain bad IMO.

It wasn't a good movie by any stretch, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The presentation for Mothra was awesome and the final battle pretty damn cool, but unlike Godzilla 2014, the monsters seemed small. The battle was some sort of apocalyptic rumble (and very cool), but humans were surviving it on ground zero? The little girl slowly runnin away from Ghidorah's lightningg blast was ridiculous The trick to a good Kaiju is to make the monster feel as big as they are supposed to be. Godzilla 2014 managed in a few times, but this time, not so much.

There isn't anything inherent to a monster smackdown movie that excludes a coherent story; I don't think this personally even came close to delivering that. For feths sake, Godzilla shrinks to half his size at times due to inconsistent special effects/scaling compared both with this and the first movie. A half dozen different special effects houses worked on the movie (I counted during the credits because they were so incosistent and bad) including ILM surprisingly. I'm guessing they didn't do the parts I took issue with as I can't recall a movie where they took the lead on VFX and that stunk this bad.

Actors supposedly in the worst possible hurricane winds in the middle of an active apocolyptic warzone with everything literally being blown into their faces (because the previous camera angle shows it all coming directly towards them) don't even blink let alone avert or cover their faces because the director wanted to show a cheesy tear rolling down a cheek while it's all going on multiple times. Again, I'm not expecting anything close to great acting but this is Coolio on a scifi channel saturday night movie level bad but without the charm despite the obvious talent of most of the key actors involved.

Do spoilers even count for this movie? Personally i went in thinking it'd be a dumb action movie you turn your brain off for and it was. It has a lot of meme potential and had some funny moments.

Spoiler:
As for humor the part where they make godzilla into jesus (which later comes back to life) as well as the other 3 jesus'es in this film (the main dude's wife, mothra and the asian dude). Long live the king was funny because now i either see godzilla as a posh british king and being he's british i imagine you guys all look like Mr. Peanut because it amuses me. You can also say Long live the king is elvis-godzilla or duke nukem godzilla. The idea of mothra and godzilla boinking was pretty hilarious when the humorous scientist mentioned it with the 'queen' and 'king' of the monsters. Reviving godzilla with a nuclear warhead in front of his passed out body was also hilarious esp. with the idea of using a nuke defibrilator to bring godzilla back to life "Clear!" *slaps nuke paddles on godzilla following a nuclear blast*. Some of the ancient drawings of monsters (err titans or whatever) was cool up till we go to the ancient city which is totally not atlantis and it shows a very off-vibe godzilla drawing. Although mothra was fun to an extent it seriously looks like a giant pokemon. Also if the wife-mom scientist had lived i'm pretty sure she'd at the very least be in prison and lose custody of her daughter since causing the deaths of millions, being an eco-terrorist and holding your daughter hostage tends to do that. Honestly i think the wife-mom scientist was more of a majiin vegeta during the buu saga when he sacrificed only it had a bit more meaning possibly. Oh and another meme is godzilla going super saiyan i guess.

Anyway those were my opinions of the movie. It's dumb, it has action and some dumb humor.

Sci-fi in general sucks with scale. I recall a friend talking about reading a 'Shadowrun' book where everybody was amazed at some hi-tech computer that was pathetic by current day standards.

A novel? Or a rulebook? To my knowledge (at least from 2nd edition on that I'm personally familiar with) Shadowrun's creators were smart enough to always use fake nomenclature for their computer stats instead of real world ones.

Lol, I started noticing with both of those.

I think it was a novel or comic but i'm not sure. He's kind of a friend i only chat with at GW and it was a passing conversation. I could ask him next time i go if i see him though. I don't think it's that important but if you're curious i'll ask.

People: THE PLOT IS BAD AND THE MOVIE IS BAD BECAUSE OF IT!

Me: Do the kaiju fight?

People: Well yeah, lots of fighting and big booms. BUT THE PEOPLE ARE SO DUMB AND BAD PLOT!

Me: Irrelevant, I am here for the kaiju.

Reminds me of Star Trek, where Data's given processing speed was lightning fast in the 1980s, but is actually slower than the world's fastest super computers today.

I just saw the movie last night. I thought it was pretty good. I went to see giant monsters beat the crap out of each other, and I was not disappointed. Not in the least. I love the look of the creatures most of all. They stayed true enough to the classic looks, yet managed to modernize them enough to make the whole thing believable on a certain level (I mean, it's still Godzilla, so reality needs to be checked at the door!).

Looking forward to seeing Godzilla and Kong battle it out, for sure!

Or Alien.
Where the Cost of the Nostromo is the Budget of the Third(?) film.
In general, ignoring stuff like that helps
Or you get the Infamous Solo line "I did the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs"

The opening chapter of Neuromancer is horribly dated in two ways; firstly, there's Case's "three megabytes of hot RAM", and secondly, the opening metaphor, "The sky was the colour of a television tuned to a dead channel". In 1984, a TV not tuned to a signal would show a grey screen, like an overcast sky. now, it's a brilliant blue - totally changing the meaning of the sentence! (not that anyone is likely to even see an untuned TV now, since they all tune in automatically).

Star Trek had a bad habit of using "iso-" as a prefix for units (like photon torpedoes having an explosive yield of so-and-so isotons). Plus points for trying to make something up so they don't accidentally use something real, negative points for picking a prefix that essentially means "equal", so an isoton is basically, a ton.

Although mothra was fun to an extent it seriously looks like a giant pokemon
Lets be frank, Mothra has always looked like she could've been in the pokemon universe in one way or another. Butterfly/Moth looking bug pokemon are not that inspired!

For those who are more into the Zilla franchise can you help me with these?

Spoiler:
Why did Rhodan attack Mothra at the end? Have they a feud going on?
Is KG actually extra terrestrial? He also regrows a head so is he related to Godzilla?
Who was the big hairy creature that had long tusks? I had not seen him before in films.
In the previous 2014 film Zillas main enemy were these big bug looking things but I didnt see them in this film?

Spoiler:
In the latest film they discuss KG being extraterrestrial and, AFAIK, he's generally always been??

the MUTOs (the bigguns from the 2014 film), or at least one of them, does make an appearance or two in the latest film. In fact, my wife did her usual thing of trying to talk to me IN the theater to ask "I thought they were dead?? Howe are they here?" but they don't play nearly as big a role as they did in the previous film)

As for the other questions you have, I'm not sure, maybe someone more up on their Zilla lore can fill that in.

Because Rodan was allied with Ghidorah and Mothra with Godzilla

He's an alien in a couple different of the movie universes.
Who was the big hairy creature that had long tusks? I had not seen him before in films.
He's new to this universe.

There was MUTO 3 at the end of the movie.

I think theres only been one movie where Monster Zero/Ghidora was NOT an extraterrestrial, which is the one with time travel and Mecha-Ghidora.

No there is also one where he is a good guy and is the guardian spirit of Japan and Godzilla is all the souls Japan has killed over the years come to seek revenge.

Oops! Forgot that one. Watched it for the first time with my 4 year old a few weeks ago, oddly enough.

I can't wait for the DVD release of King of the Monsters. My kids (4 year old son, 2 year old daughter) saw the 2014 Godzilla just the other day, and they both absolutely loved the modern incarnation. Not even scared in the slightest, surprisingly. Just seeing the hint of Godzilla's back as he was swimming under the ships before his first reveal on Hawaii, and my daughter yells "Oooh, Godzilla!!", and she didn't even know it was a Godzilla movie yet.

Later, she was dancing around miming him in San Fransisco saying, "he swing his tail and smash things!"

They will freak when they see King of the Monsters, I loved it.

It reminded me from WHFB Thundertusk:
Spoiler:

Getting back to the Kaiu fights, there sure was lot of that going on. But I was not too intrigued by it, I don't think it was anywhere as well written as in Skull Island or previous Godzilla. I think Godzilla and King Ghidorah went 1 on 1 much too early, they should have teased it out a bit first. IMO Godzilla was booked too weak, needing multiple plot devices to beat Ghidorah. And I was disappointed with big 'allied with humans' -angle which turned out to be total dud - military was there maybe like 5 seconds until Ghidorah blasted them out of the sky, then it all came down to similar 'distractions' from individual humans what we saw in Godzilla 2014.

I enjoyed it.

The human element actually wasn’t too bad, though not even seeing the battle in DC I think deserves to be a sin. Other than that almost any scene with the monsters was really good and enjoyable.

The family drama, being completely stupid, cheesy, and driven by cliches was the biggest drag in this film. Pretty much any scene that involved it was worse off, and it really distracted from what’s I think should have been the real character focus; Shirizawa and Jonah, plus the not Mothra twins who I hope will show up in a future Mothra film. This movie would have benefited from less sitcom nonsense and more focus on the monster crisis itself.

Well, we got less human drama (in time and quality) for more monster action, which we bayed for after G2014 (well, maybe not quality). But exchanging the original 'Monarch Duo' for the one dimensional idiots of a third rate 'Agents of Shield' was a raw deal. And the young girl was the least offensive of that awful family.

I feel like the human drama in the first film worked better though. In the 2014 film, sure it got a lot of screen time, but it provided a down to earth/straight forward narrative to stake something on. In this movie, I guess someone decided preventing human extinction wasn't a sufficient emotional stake for the audience so we have to have this brain dead family drama on top of it. One that comes up at all the wrong moments and sucks away the film's energy.

I do agree about losing both of the main Monarch characters from the first film and replacing them with quirky throw away gags masquerading as characters. I can't say I'm eager to see most of them in future films save for the Mothra twins.

The part of the human drama in this one that annoyed me was the whole hostage wife thing and how long they drug that out that you went into it knowing was a lie because she was shown to be a villain in the trailers.

I didn't even notice that in the trailers and saw it really early on just from the way she talked and behaved. It was the most unshocking reveal of the year almost, on par with "the good guys win in the end" for obviousness.

Honestly filmmakers do this so often I feel like there needs to be a test. If I edit every scene involving X from the film, does the movie still make sense? I bet if I went through and edited out every scene with the daughter and the Orca, kept only the Emma scenes that actually involve plotting with Jonah, and removed all the Mark scenes where he's wallowing over his family, the movie will still be about as comprehensible. So why are the scenes in the movie at all?

To be honest, the fact that the daughter was complicit (at least to start with) with her mum's murderous pact with Jonah was a surprise to me
