ChargeDog's Adventures in Ultramodern Wargaming @ 2018/08/02 23:46:40

Post by: ChargeDog

Hi all!

I've been running my site ChargeBlog for a while, focusing on looking at the options for Ultramodern Wargaming (i.e. anything past 2000). Every week I aim to produce a new article on the topic be it looking at figures, vehicles and terrain, talking tactics or battle reports. There are side projects that might stray out of the time period but nearly every week, a new moderns post. I only recently realised I haven't been positing to here and I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys think of what I get up to.

If you’re looking for some good starting point, here are a few of my best posts:

THE GREAT BIG MODERN WARGAMING RULES COMPARISON COMPLETE EDITION – A comparison of the various modern wargaming rules

DEMO GAME – OPERATION DRAGON’S HOARD – A project log of me creating a demo game for Skirmish Sangin. Yes, that is a crashed C130

PROJECT HUMVEE – INITIAL IMPRESSIONS – My first impression of the recently released Spectre Humvees

BATTLE REPORT – “CLIMB TO GLORY” – SKIRMISH SANGIN – A recent battle report showing the US Army going up against Insurgents in Bazistan

Today's post will go up at 1200 UK time (as they always do unless word-press messes up) but here is a sneak preview

Automatically Appended Next Post:
This week's post is up! We're taking a look another vehicle for all you US Army fans, the Styker ICV and MGS from Empress.

"Playing as US force in Ultramodern tabletop wargaming is like being a kid with a box of toys. There are so many options that are available! On one side, you could be rolling around in technicals as SF advisers alongside local troops. Alternatively, you could break out the heavy metal and plonk the Bradleys and Abrams on the table. An interesting option is to roll out with a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and all the vehicles it includes."

As always, it's on the blog at https://hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2018/08/03/impressions-empress-stryker-icv-and-mgs/

Nice to see some moderns on here, have actually dropped in on your blog quite a few times bud. Love me some spectre minis.

Am thinking of picking up some empress minis and vehicles. Keep up the good work.

Nice stuff, have flitted around the edges of Modern gaming but never really got into it as finding the rules for what seemed like the best game (Skirmish Sangin) proved extremely hard, despite the fact that the writer lives twenty minutes drive away.

Make sure to update here mate, look forward to seeing what else you do.

I love Skirmish Sangin (so much I ended up co-writing a book for it). Heck if you're that close, you might end up being able to get a game of it with him :v

My plan is to update here for both the weekly posts (seeing as Monday's Wargaming Week includes the latest ultramodern news) so I'm sure you'll all be sick of me posting in a few weeks!

Hell keep the updates coming bud, just put my hand on my unbuilt razor and ranger team from spec ops that need to be done. So many models too little time.

It's Monday so time for Wargaming Week. This is my weekly hobby update/news post which comes out every week. Expect lots of comments about "work slowing down". Also occasionally non-modern stuff sneaks in. This week, plenty of news!

I enjoyed reading your breakdown of modern games. Sadly, I have only played Force-on-Force/Tomorrow's War and I really enjoyed the rules. It is a great tool box to add the elements you want to focus and then layer on extras as you go. One of the best systems in Wargames IMHO

Really looking forward to those quadbikes and well done on the Strykers.

Must try some of the empress vehicles, want to pick up some of the usmc figs of theirs.
Also playing with the idea of painting up a few spectre guys and the two operator snipers as marsoc in a woodland scheme, i think the crye woodland just looks too cool not to do. Plus painting multi cam sucks lol.

Force on Force isn't my favourite game (I really like the smaller size stuff like Sangin) but I think it's an absolute classic that anyone playing moderns should try.

hon hon hon. Pm'd an admin to fix the flag.

Thanks for the comments! White Dragon's stuff is great, I just need to get round to painting it. And mental preparing to paint all that MTP.

Painting multi-cam is the bane of my time playing ultra-moderns. I like the Spectre process (available from their site) and it gives a nice end result but it just takes time. Also Crye kit in woodland is a nice combo.

As for the USMC, it's all great until you realise that (unless you're using the very latest TOE) you need 13 man squads :|

Thanks!

I have a Platoon + supports of the Empress Brits - absolutely love them. However, I need to repaint them in a better style of MTP which is going to take a while. I did a quick look at them WAY back in 2015 which you can find at https://hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2015/07/12/british-army-platoon-completed/ but there are a few additional things to add.

Super cool man. I've always been curious about modern stuff, but counter-insurgency just never spoke to me as wargame.

I like your idea of a fictional "Stan" though. Seems a really good way to break out of the box of the real world and use the models you want.

I would definitely want an Abrams.

Thanks!

Setting up Bazistan was a really fun project and the whole point was being able to run what ever I wanted. It's also a little nebulous so I could run some nation on nation stuff one week and then cut to counter-insurgency the following game. At some point I need to nail down the details for it's African counterpart Zaiweibo (and then start painting up all the figures for it)

Also having got the strykers, its inevitable that I'll be grabbing an Abrams at some point :v. I'm tempted to get a pair and set one up for US use while the other ready for service with a local nation.

It opens up some really cool opportunities for US vs. local militia and Russian "advisors" ect...

Or hell, just straight open hostilities between British SAS and Chinese infantry.

I went to both Iraq and Afghanistan as an infantry Marine, and I gotta say, the thought of gaming either of them bores me to tears. I'm really big into military history (as I'm sure most reading this are) , and I could care less about the history of either of those conflicts.

Is the Sagin ruleset complicated? I've always meant to give it a read.

It's maybe a little bit more complicated than other rulesets like Black Ops, but once you have an understanding of how the rules work and have the quick reference sheet to hand for the modifiers, it starts to flow really well. This is definitely one to play with a small scale patrol/mission first to get to know all the details

Good to see a battlereport and your Humvees on the table, though I find your use of the word squad disturbing, they are sections!
I am surprised that the ambush was just driven into so easily, was that delibrate on the part of the player?
Hope to see more of these reports mate.

That game looked really fun. I was a bit surprised the Blufor didn't space out a bit more when they drove past that suspicious white car as well.

I'm hoping to get a few more games in soon, playing reminded me how long it had been since I last put figure on table.

WELP, time for me to go back in the box for squad/section misuse :|

Easy E wrote: I was a bit surprised the Blufor didn't space out a bit more when they drove past that suspicious white car as well.

The BLUFOR players had been told it was unlikely to be IEDs in theatre but it was still possible. I did like how it was the US SF player who stopped well clear of the suspect vehicle while the local force rolled in without a care in the world

If you do a follow up battle like you mentioned what ruleset were you thinking of? Spectre? Love to see a building clearing op carrying on the narrative.

It will depend on what the guys I'm playing with decide but it will probably be Skirmish Sangin using the Plausible Deniability book's additional rules.

But first, I need to finish off painting the pile of buildings I have in my flat :v

Great looking stuff. Moderns is one of the genres I've always considered...but would have to carry the load for the local group since they're lazy. Might convince myself to try it sometime. Have some really cool/intriguing areas I'd like to pursue.

Excellent stuff, enjoyed the Skirmish Sangin bat reps.

I am looking to expand my 28mm Generic Middle Eastern scenery stocks - I think I am good for buildings but would appreciate some recommendations and links for providers of wadis, scrub, drainage ditches etc. And cars that fit in scale too!

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to getting back to it and fitting some more games in.

As for the scenery stocks, I'm going to be improving my own collection of that in the new year - most of my stuff in games is borrowed from the club and I'd like my own stockpile for taking photos/playing games at home. So expect lots of talk in the new year on it. Although I have picked up several of Spectre's wall products to take a look at

This is awesome! I've been thinking about taking the dive into Modern wargamming, but I would be the first in my area to do it. I know Spectre uses 28mm, do you know what other companies do as well?
I didn't see anything on the blog about the miniatures beyond your collection, and I was hoping to get some regular armed forces (Eastern Europe/Middle East/Western).

Hi! Sorry for the delay in responding.

Other companies using 28mm include Empress and Eureka. I have figures from both, it's just i haven't got round to actually painting most of them up (or they have gone back into the lead pile to be repainted). Empress Miniatures have quite a few different factions for regular army.

Starting to wonder if I need to move this thread out of this sub-forum - seems like I haven't spent much time on Modern Warfare recently (almost looks like I'm taking a break). On the other hand, I did spend my weekend looking at modern warfare related topics, it just so happened to be on my PC instead :v

Anyway, here is a new Wargaming Week

Hey.

So i see first post is from 18.
Are there any "hyper modern" games that exists out there?
(aka games that uses equipment, or is staged in the timeframe 2010 to 2020?)

Personly i find anything prior to 2010 to not be worthy of the definition modern, (would you call a car made prior to 2010 modern??) and it seems the general definition of "modern" in relation to tabletop historical games, is material and conflicts(real of fictional) from previous millenium, aka heavily outdated.

Hi! You're describing ultramodern wargaming which pretty much all the rule sets I mention in my comparison on the blog are designed around - Spectre and Sangin are especially modern in terms of equipment available to you.
