Evening all - let's try this plog thing again, shall we?

My name is Dysartes, and I'm a tabletop standard painter. No excuses there, I know my level, and I have more of a focus on volume than improving, really. However, I do a miniature painting stream on Twitch, normally three times a week - feel free to drop in if you get chance.

I'm going to be using this plog to chronicle what I paint during 2019. I have a whole bunch of goals for the year, with the major one being to complete a model a day over the course of 2019 - if I can exceed the 367 I managed in 2018, even better.

Today marked my first stream of the year, after being offline (for Twitch, at least) for the festive period. My aim was to wrap up - or at least progress - some of the models which were left as WIP when I finished in December. Here's what was worked on today:

WIP

An old school Catachan Lieutenant, from 2nd edition. I'm hoping to finish him off next time out. A few washes required, along with some detail work (cigar and armour, mainly).

Ko-Tun Feralo, a hero for Imperial Assault. Lots of small bits on this model today, also hoping to complete this one on Tuesday.

Loku Kanoloa, another hero for Imperial Assault. Need to figure out Man Calamari skin before I can finish this model off.

An old school Tallarn Lieutenant, also from 2nd edition. Need to make my mine up on robe colours, as well as doing detail work on the armour.

Navigator's Guild goal marker, for Guild Ball. Didn't do a huge amount today, just started to basecoat the background of the compass with Celestra Grey.

Buckwheat, a Farmer's Guild mascot for Guild Ball. Made use of some spare Parasite Brown to basecoat the flag. Again, not huge progress, but progress nonetheless.

Finished
Spoiler:

Wander, the Navigator's Guild mascot from Guild Ball. My image search history now includes "Albatross tongue"...

Mak Eshka'rey, a hero from Imperial Assault. I may have to redo this picture with a different background, as I'm sure he isn't this dark in real life.

I wasn't happy with how this picture came out. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

2 models down, 363 to go...

Future Dysartes here with an edit - I thought a spoilered list of links to useful posts might be handy, especially as the thread gets longer...

Could always rely on you to provide a varied diet of figures. Good luck with beating last year's total.

One a day seems an insane amount to the likes of myself, who generally struggles to get double figures in a year

Thanks monkeytroll - last year I managed to paint models from 17 games, and 15 manufacturers, so variety it one thing I aim for

I find that because I've committed to do 3 streams a week, for a total of around 10 hours a week, I get quite a bit done. The structure of the schedule keeps me focused, as does bouncing between different models rather than just concentrating on one - saves me getting bored.

That is a bold plan and aggressive target Dysartes. I managed 75 last year and considered that a good year.

Good luck,

CB

Thanks Captain - I tracked what I painted last year, which is how I know I hit the 367, so I know the model/day goal is doable. With a bit more planning, and careful use of off-stream time to prep, I think it is a viable target again - just need to catch up with the year and then get ahead of the game

Of course, work deciding I need to be away on Thursday - and therefore missing a stream - isn't going to help matters

First Tuesday night stream out of the way - fairly quiet in terms of people in the chat, but that arguably means I can concentrate more on getting things done

It occurs to me I haven't posted my standard schedule - I'm usually on Twitch 7-10pm GMT (or BST) on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, and on 12-4pm on a Sunday. As noted in my last post, though, I won't be on this Thursday due to a work commitment

Hopefully I can get some building done in my hotel room.

WIP

Navigator's Guild goal marker - worked up the compass aspect a bit more. Next time I'm painting will see some of the silver turn gold, via Seraphim Sepia. Looks like I don't need to tidy up the background too much, which is handy - getting a smooth Ulthuan Grey can be... "fun".

Tallarn Officer - added some more metallic sections. Still need to figure out the robes.

Peck - Farmer's Guild mascot. As the hens have been done previously, tonight I was working on Peck himself. Not the best angle for the picture, thinking about it. Some shading, some metallics, and maybe a touch of Coal Black required.

Complete

Catachan Officer - sorted out the gold, tidied up other bits and pieces, painted the cigar. Job done.

Spoiler:

Ko-tun Feralo, Quartermaster - mostly applying washes and some metallic spot colour, then more washes.

I wasn't happy with how this picture came out. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

Goal Progress
4/365 models completed (3 games, 3 manufacturers)
21/1000 points of Imperium completed
15 currently owned Imperial Assault figures to finish

I’ll have to check your streams as I’ve started to pick up Guildball stuff including the daughters of the falcon set today. Lovely paint jobs.

Thanks Theophony - I've made it a goal to paint at least one full team box this year, though at the minute I seem to be bouncing between figures from different teams...

Might even start a rookie tomorrow.

So, I missed a stream because I was away for work, but that doesn't mean I didn't get any hobbying done. I'd carefully packed a kit of things to get some building done whilst in my hotel room:

I didn't get as much as I could've built done, mainly as the needle for my poly cement got gunked up. Even so, I got these done:

12 ETB Poxwalkers and a Nurgle Herald (or whatever he is actually called these days) - no bases yet, as I'll be building some of my urban bases for them, so they work as opposition for my Guard.

Daring goal, but considering how many you finished last year that totally sounds doable.
Will be interesting to see minis from so many different ranges.

Paintjobs look good too, especially when the speed is taken into account.

I wish you good luck!

Post by: Dysartes

Thanks Ezki - I didn't want to go over the top with the basic volume goal for the year, though I did give myself a stretch goal which would be a bit more difficult.

Another Sunday stream wrapped up earlier, with two more models finished, and two almost finished, which I consider good progress. I'm hoping to undercoat a batch of models to give me plenty to deal with on Tuesday.

WIP

Diala Passil, Twi'lek Jedi from Imperial Assault. Considering she hadn't been started at the beginning of the stream, I'm pretty happy with where she ended it. Need to add Soulstone Blue to the lightsaber blade, and do some tidying up, but she can be wrapped up next time out.

Navigator's Guild Goal Marker - needs a shade on the wooden wheel, and maybe a little tidy-up of the Ulthuan Grey background to the compass. I'm happy with how the compass is looking, though.

Complete
Spoiler:
I will probably try these pics again once I find where the black backdrop wandered off to.

Loku Kanaloa, Imperial Assault

Peck, Guild Ball Mascot

I wasn't happy with how this picture came out. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

Goal Progress
6/365 models completed (3 games, 3 manufacturers)
14 currently owned Imperial Assault figures to finish

So, another Tuesday, another stream. In getting ready for this evening, I undercoated 10 more models, ready to start them after I finished off Diala and the goal marker.

WIP

Rookie Seenah, Hunter's Guild, Guild Ball - early days on the bear, with the base taken care of separately. Given the amount of fur, more drybrushing required!

Grot Scuttling - First of the models from my Silver Tower set to be worked on. Decided on a scheme for the bases (though it needs one more highlight), and basecoated the robe/cape with German Grey.

Poxbringer - Again, worked up the base for this guy, as I don't want to drybrush grey over the green if I work on him the other way around. Some research required on the guts.

Completed
Spoiler:
I'm not overly happy with either pic, but have yet to find my other backgrounds.

Diala Passil - despite a near-disaster with the Soulstone Blue, managed to get her lightsaber looking respectable.

Navigator's Guild Goal Marker

I wasn't happy with how this picture came out. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

Goal Progress
8/365 models completed (3 games, 3 manufacturers)
13 currently owned Imperial Assault figures to finish

Another day, another stream - and tonight marked the return of Theme Thursdays. Which I began to regret when the anime music started to come out :(

Didn't get anything finished tonight, but made some progress on the WIPs.

I'm also working on some Poxwalker bases, which I'll use by a step-by-step on how I'm doing the sort of bases you can see on the Poxbringer.

WIP

Poxbringer - used washes to build up the skin and horns, then picked out the hair on the severed head with German Grey, and re-undercoated areas I know will be metallic with a Warcolours black undercoat.

Rookie Seenah - Should be able to finish the bear off on Sunday. Need to tidy up a couple of splodges on the horns (one of which is quite visible here).

Grot Scuttling - Maybe I should've basecoated the skin before carrying on with the robe. Got the first coat of skin down on six of them, as well as drybrushing some highlights on the robe and washing with with Nuln Oil.

Thanks Captain - and having just cracked open my copy of the Resident Evil 2 board game (and expansions), I can see opportunities there to speed up. Painting board game zombies (or four different Leon sculpts) should be time efficient.

I do need to go through what I have for it, and figure out an efficient way of storing it, though, as some of the expansion boxes are fairly empty.

Another Sunday stream down - only got one model finished, but made decent progress on another.

Had prepared 8 more models, and two of them sort of got started today - still need to find the background for my lightbox, though.

WIP

Poxwalker - got a lot done on him today. Quite happy with the Nurgling - may need to do a Plaguebearer unit in that scheme.

Grot Scuttling - one of the 8 currently being worked on. Not looking forwards to the web details on the robe.

Wildcat Warrior - just started on the base today. This guy will be becoming Bagpuss down the line.

Mouse Knight - as with the Wildcat, just started on the base.

Completed
Spoiler:

Rookie Seenah - Hunter's Guild, Guild Ball

I wasn't happy with how this picture came out. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

Goal Progress
9/365 models completed (3 games, 3 manufacturers)

Spoiler:
Well, that was useful - looked somewhere I didn't think I'd put the bag with the other backgrounds for my photo booth in, and managed to find them.

So I've taken new pictures of the nine models I've found this year - some are better than on a white background, some aren't.

Here they are, in the same order I posted them initially:

Completed - Reshoot

Wander - I think I prefer the white background here.

Mak Eshka'rey

Catachan Officer - I think the white worked better here.

Ko-tun Feralo

Loku Kanaloa

Peck

Diala Passil

Navigator's Guild Goal Marker

Rookie Seenah

Yeah, this first attempt at redoing the finished pictures didn't work. Reshoots have now occurred, and updated pictures are available in this post.

Dysartes,

I am not certain that background works, some of the lighter models get lost in the background scatter.

Just an observation.

Evening Captain,

Frankly, I'm not currently too happy with either the white or the black - it may be I need to use the black for darker models (such as Seenah), and the white for lighter ones (like Wander or the Catachan, oddly).

I also want to try with the models further back from the LEDs, and see if that helps.

Wow, took a week long break and so much to catch up on!
Good job.

I think moving the models away from the light might be a good idea, as some models are a bit over saturated. Or it's the camera settings.
Anyway, it's something I struggle with all the time.

Dysartes Twitches - 2019 Output | 04/07 - Post-Stream Update - Dwarf Fantasy Football Players @ 2019/01/23 17:40:51

Post by: Dysartes

I'm hoping it isn't the camera settings - though, admittedly, I am using my Samsung S9 to take pictures rather than my camera, as I need to find where I put the charger for the camera batteries.

I've left a question over in Tyranid Horde's plog regarding using the booth, in case I'm missing something, as it was on his recommendation I got it - and his pictures are coming out a lot better than mine.

As a result, I'm holding off completed pictures until I hear back.

WIP

Grot Scuttling - Whichever sadist designed these models needs punishment. The cobweb detailing is a PITA to work on - it isn't raised enough from the surface in a lot of places. Guess I need to tidy that up next stream.

Mouse Knight - Got pretty much all the metallics done last night - fur and cloth next time out.

Bagpuss (Wildcat Warrior) - Again, got the metallics done. Not quite sure why the first picture is out of focus. Need to do a grey basecoat before starting on the pink fur...

Completed
Imagine a picture of a Poxbringer here...

Goal Progress
10/365 models completed (3 games, 3 manufacturers)
7% of the way to the Chaos forces goal

Thanks Nurglitch!

WIP

Grott Scuttling - Just two of this Grot to do, and pretty much all that is required is figuring out what to do with the handle of the dagger in this web. May well finish them off off-stream.

Claire Redfield - Made a start on the three different sculpts of Claire that came with my KS pledge. Just blocking in colours for now, but I need some more reference pictures, especially of the alternative costumes.

Mouse Knight - Blocked in the fur with a couple of coats of Baneblade Brown. Need to pick out the tail, paws & nose with Midlund Flesh next.

Bagpuss - As you can see, I've started on the pink fur. Used Vallejo Model Colou Sky Grey over the black, before basecoating with Screamer Pink and washing with a Lahmian/Carrobug mix. Think another shade with an Agrax/Carroburg/Lahmian mix is in order, then a drybrush/highlight with Pink Horrow. Then I can summon the White Stripes on his fur...

Completed
Imagine a picture of six Grot Scuttlings from Silver Tower here...

Goal Progress
16/365 models completed (4 games, 3 manufacturers)
6/51 models from Silver Tower completed

Thanks Midget Gems - I find it helps keep me on an even keel if I can see where I'm up to, and what I'm working towards

More work on today's stream...

WIP

AT-ST for Imperial Assault - Second coat of Celestra Grey down. Still need to smooth out a couple of spots, then we can break out the Nuln Oil.

Claire Redfield - Just went over the skin with Ryn Flesh.

Mouse Knight - Basecoated paws/tail/nose with Midlund Flesh, washed fur & skin with Agrax, and basecoated the leather.

Poxwalker x6 - Worked the skin up from Reikland using the Warhammer TV wash method. Is fun.

Bagpuss - bit the bullet and basecoated the stripes today. Also the leather & bone handle on secondary blade. Still need to figure out cape colour - possibly a green?

Completed
Imagine a picture of two more Grot Scuttlings from Silver Tower here...

Goal Progress
18/365 models completed (4 games, 3 manufacturers)
8/51 models from Silver Tower completed

Another stream down, more progress achieved...

WIP

Poxwalker - finished off three of the six. The other three (like this guy) have some additional metal details I need to pick out (D-rings and fly icons), so I'll polish them off on Sunday.

Knight Questor - This is one of the heroes from Silver Tower, and the first Stormcast I've worked on. Possibly going with a blue steel finish for the armour, rather than gold.

AT-ST - Drybrushed a highlight on, ready for Nuln washing it next time. Will tidy the base up before my next stream.

Mouse Knight - Washed the leather and muzzle, then picked out the shield and the tabard (?) in purple. Just need to do the big cloak now.

Bagpuss - Shaded and highlighted the white stripes, along with picking out the nose and eyes. May need to revisit the stripe highlights in places.

Completed
Imagine three Poxwalkers here...

Goal Progress
21/365 models completed (4 games, 3 manufacturers)

Streamed today, and cleared five models out of the queue - then started on a IG Heavy Weapon Squad.

WIP

Knight Questor - Basecoated the armour with Miniature Paints Blue Steel, then washed it with Drakenhof Nightshade.

Steel Legion Heavy Weapon Squad - Started on the bases, with a first coat of Cryx Bane Highlight. Will do more work on the base before my next stream.

Bagpuss - Reviewed and tweaked the highlights on the white fur. Also touched up some chips on the leather pouch and fur.

Completed

Three Poxwalkers

Mouse Knight, Oathsworn Miniatures

AT-ST, Imperial Assault

Goal Progress
26/365 models completed (5 games, 4 manufacturers)
Achievement Unlocked: Painted models from 5 games (or board games) during 2019

@ChaoticMind - Well, I never said I was sane. The AT-ST wasn't too bad to paint - in all honesty, it was how patchy the first coat of Celestra Grey was that put me off working on it more. Once I bit the bullet and sorted that out, it was OK.

@amazingturtles - Thanks. Though if you think he's cool, have a look at the finished Bagpuss, below.

@Ezki - Thanks dude. I'm much happier with the booth now Tyranid Horde explained how I needed to tweak my process. Guess I'm redoing the pictures of the stuff I finished this year again.

@Captain Brown - Yeah, about that... I got invited to the Imperial Assault Regionals being held at my LGS this weekend. The scenarios being used rotated on Monday, so I needed to get the latest box to have the materials I need to play...

Anyway, I streamed last night, and got some more work done. Only one completion, but it was an important one. Also started four more models, which I think I should finish on Thursday.

I need to edit the photos to go with it, but I should be adding a guide to how to make the ruined urban bases I'm making for my 40k models to the thread at some point this week.

WIP

Steel Legion Heavy Weapon Teams - Finished working the bases up, picked out the trousers, boots and holsters, and washed things with Agrax. Greatcoats and details are the next step, along with deciding how I want the weapons to look.

Knight-Questor - Applied two drybrushed highlights to the silver (the original Blue Steel, followed by VMA Chrome). Painted the little scaled section with VMA Steel, and washed it with a Drakenhof/Nuln mix. Ready to basecoat the areas to be gold next, I think.

Imperial Assault Death Trooper - Essentially a taller Storm Trooper with black armour. Basecoated with VMC German Grey, followed by a drybrush of a German Grey/Skavenblight Dinge mix as a highlight. Drybrushed the weapon with VMA Gungrey. Washed the whole thing with Nuln Oil - will do a second coat on the armour plates before next stream, I think. Need to pick out some metal details, and they should be done.

Completion

Bagpuss - Oathsworn Miniatures Wildcat Warrior

Goal Progress
27/365 models completed (5 games, 4 manufacturers)

OK, now we've got the light box issue sorted, I went back and took new pictures of finished models from January (again):
Spoiler:

Wander

Mak Eshka'rey

Ko-Tun Feralo

Catachan Lieutenant

Peck

Loku Kanoloa

Diala Passil

Navigator's Guild Goal Marker

Rookie Seenah

And then I got pictures of a couple of groups of models that didn't make it on when they were done initially:

Poxwalkers

Grot Scuttlings

Got a decent stream out of the way, with another four models completed. Still behind the curve, though.

Probably going to prepare the Cloud City Wing Guard and AT-DP for Imperial Assault next, as well as more Poxwalkers and maybe the last 10 Cadian Conscripts for a unit of 30. Oh, and Lord Felthius, now my latest Conquest package rocked up.

WIP

Steel Legion HWT - Based the coats and helmets with Greatcoat Grey, picked out the canteens with VMA Steel, and the strapping with P3 Bootstrap Leather. Also tidied the base edges up off-stream.

Knight Questor - Started working up the gold, along with the swordblade with Steel, and the skull (Jack Bone over Steel Legion Drab) that the dude seems to have glued to his foot...

Hedgehog Alchemist and Squirrel Archers - Worked up the bases in both cases, and basecoated the fur (or whatever the right term is for a hedgehog). More to do next time...

Completed

Death Troopers - Decided not to wash with Nuln again. Picked out metallic bits with Steel (which then got a blue/black wash) and used Waystone Green over Aluminium for the chin lights (which may or not be visible here).

Goal Progress
31/365 models completed (5 games, 4 manufacturers)
29 models remaining for Imperial Assault

@Captain Brown - Thanks, Captain. The Poxwalkers are always fun to work up, due to the wash-based skin technique. In theory, I should convert some of these E2B versions of them, though. Still, got another set of six ready to base...

WIP

Squirrel Archer(s) - Worked up the fur on the Squirrel, with two drybrush highlights followed by a wash of Agrax Earthshade. I might want to do a final highlight drybrush, but I'm not sure yet.

Steel Legion HWT - Washed the coats & canteen with a blue/black mix. Picked out the Y harness with Bootstrap Leather, with the buckle picked out with Steel. Used Cryx Bane Highlight on the bedroll, with Bootstrap Leather for the straps. Finally, picked out the army badge with Celestra Grey, followed by Ulthuan Grey over it.

Knight-Questor - Applied more wash to the gold to improve the tone, along with Mournfang Brown on the handle of the sword. Happy with the gold now, at least.

Completed

Ugnaught Tinkerers for Imperial Assault - Managed to knock these guys out in a day, having undercoated them on Saturday, and applied the final wash on Sunday evening. Didn't do all the work on stream, but got them done.

Goal Progress
34/365 models completed (5 games, 4 manufacturers)
26 models remaining for Imperial Assault

Thanks for that, Orlando - hope to be working on some more of Grandfather's troops soon.

Last night's stream ran a bit longer than intended, mainly so as I could polish off the Steel Legion Heavy Weapon Squad - I was hoping to get further with the Wing Guard than I did, but I guess I can finish them on Thursday instead.

WIP

Squirrel Archers - Picked colours for the tunics on the two Archers - this guy is getting P3 Exile Blue as a base, while the other will get Citadel Castellan Green.

Hedgehog Alchemist - Basecoated her dress with Warcolours Red 5 (a paint range with sensible names? Whatever will they think of next?)

Cloud City Wing Guard - Made a start on these, and didn't get quite as far as I'd liked. Need to finish basecoating the uniform with Calgar Blue, and do a second coat to smooth out out. May also sort out flesh before next stream, too.

Completed

Steel Legion Heavy Weapons Squad

Goal Progress
37/365 models completed (5 games, 4 manufacturers, 1 unit)
Achievement Unlocked: Paint 1 complete unit (minimum 3 models)
6.3% towards Imperial goal (I really thought the unit was worth more than 42 points...)

Thanks CommissarKhaine - I'm really happy with how they've turned out, apart from how cheap it turns out they are

A quiet stream tonight, which means I was able to get my head down and get some work done. I was mainly focused on the Wing Guard, to try to polish them off. Didn't quite get there, as there was quite a lot of work to do, but I've definitely made progress, as well as starting three more models.

WIP

Cygnar Lightning Pod - This thing is mostly metals, with a bit of galvanic glow. Got the base down for the gold, along with two coats of sepia, as well as painting the base and basecoating the ball with Gungrey. Other metal areas need basecoating with Steel.

Squirrel Archer - Got some shading done on both Squirrels today, adding some shadows to their tunics. Also picked out the white area on their muzzle, in line with the previous ones I've painted. Might have to work the leathers in next.

Cloud City Wing Guard - Had to do a lot on the Wing Guard today. The uniforms needed a second coat of Calgar Blue, before they were washed with Drakenhof. Skin got a second coat of Midlund Flesh, before being washed with Reikland. Boots and holsters were washed with Nuln. Finally, the yellow trim was picked out with P3 Moldy Ochre. Next up will be beards/hair and the shirt collar.

Post by: Dysartes

Thanks Commissar - yeah, the Lightning Pod was bigger than I thought it would be, but suitably full of Cygnar galvanic technology.

A while back I was talking about doing a guide to the bases I've been using for my 40k models so far - I finally got around to sorting the photos out, so here you go (spoilered for length).

Spoiler:
Making these bases is a fun process, and you can get quite a bit of variety with some simple components.

The Build

Step 1 - Select your base

In this case, I'm basing a Poxwalker, so I'm making use of the 25mm base he came with. Clean up the point where it attached to a sprue on the edge, if required, and make sure the top is flat - the bases with a divot in them as an injection site may need a little spike trimming with a knife and file.

Step 2 - Prepare your miniature

Most of the models I use this basing style on come with a tab on their feet - this needs to be carefully removed, and a file used to ensure the bottom of the feet is flat. Ideally, the miniature needs to be able to stand up on its own.

Step 3 - Adding plasticard

The next step is to add a piece of plasticard to the base. This isn't mandatory, and some models work without it, but as a general rule I'll add a piece as a contact area for the miniature's feet. For a 25mm base, I'll take a segment of plasticard 20mm wide, and use the model to estimate how deep the strip will need to be. Use poly cement to glue it to the plastic base. Keep the model to hand, as you will need to make sure that any elements you add to the base don't get in the way of adding the model to the base.

Step 4 - Details

This step is where you can raid your bits box to add material to the bases. For most of mine, I use a piece of brick (cut down from a doll house brick) and some concrete rubble (from a tub of "concrete" rubble I got from Gale Force 9). However, you can use anything thematic from your bits box to add interest - skulls from the Citadel Skulls box work quite well. Depending on the thing you're using, use superglue or poly cement to attach the pieces to the base.

Step 5 - Building height

The obvious problem from the previous step is that the plasticard, brick and concrete don't blend in very well. To solve this, I use a medium ballast from Gale Force 9, using PVA glue to stick it to the base. I wouldn't necessarily glue it to the whole of the lower section of the base, but that is an option.

Step 6 - Finer texture

The one problem following the previous step is how rough the texture is. To balance this out, adding finer surface texture, I apply sand over the top of the ballast, as well as on any areas I haven't glued the ballast down on. In my case, I'm using some bird sand I got from a pet shop, but any sand should do.

Step 7 - Sealing the texture

PVA doesn't give the strongest bond, especially if you're going to be drybrushing the surface - which we will be. To help with this, I apply a layer of watered-down PVA glue over the top of the sand and ballast. This can take a little while to dry, but I find it makes the bases more resilient.

Step 8 - Attach the miniature

An obvious step, but one which is needed - if you're using a plastic model, use poly cement to glue the model down. If working with a metal or resin model, I'd advise pinning the model to the base, not just relying on a super glue bond alone.

Step 9 - Final texture

Finally, we need to add some texture to the surface of the plasticard (along with large sections of concrete on larger bases). To fix this, I use some Vallejo Sandy Paste around the model's feet, taking care to avoid getting it on the miniature – this also works on the top of larger segments of concrete.

Painting the Base

Step 1 - Undercoat

As a general rule, I normally undercoat with Citadel Chaos Black spray. Of course, I'm painting a Poxwalker here, so I used Citadel Corax White spray. Regardless of undercoat, the paint approach is the same. If coverage is a little patchy on the base, I'm not overly worried about it.

Step 2 - "Base" coat

First step on painting the base is P3 Cryx Bane Highlight. I tend to use two thinned coats, in order to give a solid base of colour to work with.

Step 3 - Highlighting

...and here is where we enter Drybrush City. To highlight the base, I use two drybrushes - a reasonably heavy drybrush of P3 Trollblood Highlight, followed by a lighter drybrush of P3 Sickly Skin.

Step 4 - Details

This is where your colour choice will be determined by what details you added to the base. In this case, I've just got my brick to pick out. My choice of colour for them is P3 Skorne Red. If you've added pieces from your bits box, use whatever colours are appropriate.

Step 5 - Shading

To shade the base, I use a reasonably heavy wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade - it tints the highlights, and gathers in the recesses. Welcome to the grime of a ruined cityscape...

Step 6 - Tidy up

Final thing is to tidy up the base, especially the outer rim. As I'd used a white undercoat, I first painted on a layer of Warcolours Black Undercoat, followed by a pass with Citadel Abaddon Black. If I'm using a black undercoat spray, I just need to use the Abaddon Black layer.

Step 7 - Paint your model

The bases look better with a painted model on top, I assure you

Hope it proves useful to you.

@Captain Brown - Yeah, Guardsmen can take a while. *looks at 10 Conscripts that just appeared on the painting table*

@CommissarKhaine - I remove the tabs because it works better when mounting the model on the base. In theory, you could omit the plasticard and use the normal tab, but it may lead to the model's feet being obscured on the base.

WIP

CT-1701 (Imperial Assault) - Had to get some Parasite Brown out to fix a chip, so basecoated this shoulder panel at the same time.

Crusader Justifier (Reaper Miniatures) - Only really started to basecoat the base on this guy today. Still need to tidy up the undercoat. Am amused by how much he appears to be over-compensating.

Squirrel Archers - Eyes, bracers, pouch, quiver and belt all got attention today. Eyes still need a reflection spot, and there's some detailing to do on the quiver, but we might be able to get them finished on Tuesday. Or maybe Thursday...

Completed

Lightning Pods

Cloud City Wing Guard

Goal Progress
46/365 models completed (6 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit)
Achievement Unlocked - Completed miniatures produced by 5 manufacturers
20 Imperial Assault models to be painted

I can see why you cut off the tabs. I like the sunken feeling it gives when you keep the tabs attached, and I don' t mind a bit of foot getting obscured. Loving that finished lightning pod, might try and source a few of those for random projects....

@CommissarKhain - Best guess on getting the pods is seeing if anyone bought the plastic kit to build the Hurricane, as it doesn't use them. Alternatively, you could see if the Privateer Press bits store still has the metal parts available, but shipping can be expensive from them.

Another stream down tonight, and more progress achieved. I'm still slightly behind where I need to be for the 1 model per day goal, but the project I started today should get me back on track.

WIP

Knight-Questor - Started to work on some of the non-metallic areas on the models. Knees, shoulderpad and shield were basecoated in Kantor Blue, then washed with Drakenhof. Random leather strappy armour was basecoated German Grey, and will get washed with Nuln Oil next time out.

CT-1701 - Mostly basecoating this guy, and not overly neatly. Flesh was Midlund Flesh (and I think the beard or moustache is making his face look weird), while the armour was basecoated with Celestra Grey. Why am I painting Clone Trooper armour over a black undercoat?

Cadian Conscripts - Yup, 10 more of these guys. Worked up the bases as per the guide, basecoated the uniform areas with Cryx Bane Highlight (though it needs a second coat), adn the skin with Midlund Flesh (ditto). Both extra coats will be done off-camera.

Complete

Squirrel Archers - quite glad to get the twins finished off, as they complete my all-Squirrel 350 penny warband for Burrows & Badgers, seen below:

Goal Progress
48/365 models completed (6 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 50)

@Captain Brown - Well, I'm glad to hear that Mrs Captain would approve.

The downside with working on batches of ten is that you don't always get them finished off as quickly as you'd think.

WIP

Cadian Conscripts (10) - Did second coats on the uniform and skin, basecoated the armour with Greatcoat Grey, the boots with German Grey, and the darker leather areas with Battlefield Brown. Need to basecoat the metal areas, and it'll be time to deploy the shades...

CT-1701 - washed the skin, picked out the hair/beard with Celestra, then went over the armour, hair and beard with Ulthuan. Skin needs a little touch up, and the Ulthuan probably wants smoothing out, then can use German Grey on undersuit areas.

Knight-Questor - Shaded black leather strappy bits with Nuln (though a second coat may be required). Basecoated the parchment (twice) with Rakarth, then washed with Agrax.

Techmarine - A new challenger appears! This guy has been waiting for that axe to be pinned back on for a while. Based and shaded the skin, and now need to find some reasonable reference pictures for him. Probably going Mentor Legion here.

@Captain Brown - Yeah, I keep thinking I can paint a block of 10 Conscripts at a time, and each time it goes a bit Pete Tong. Mind you, still less of slog than painting 17 Inquisitorial Stormtroopers in one session...

Streamed again today and, while I didn't finish as much as I'd liked, I did managed to complete the Conscripts. On the other hand, I think another six can be polished off on Tuesday.

WIP

H.U.N.K - Starting with a new model, one of the Resident Evil 2 models. A log of grey and gunmetal involved so far, though it looks like I need to fix those kneepads. Might finish him on Tuesday.

CT-1701 - Picked out undersuit sections with German Grey, washed the armour/hair with a thinned blue/black shade. Realised I'd missed a panel on his arm, so basecoated that with Celestra Grey. Might finish him on Tuesday.

Loth-cats (4) - Started on these creatures today as well. So far, just applied two basecoats of Zandri Dust, ready to shade them next time out. Might finish them on Tuesday.

Knight-Questor - Layered Pallid Wych Flesh over the parchment, seems to have worked. Also added the lightning bolts to the shield, with Ulthuan Grey over Celestra Grey.

Completed

10 Imperial Guard Cadian Conscripts - Now the unit of 30 is complete! Finally! After over a year...

Goal Progress
58/365 models completed (6 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 55)
10.3% of the way to the Imperium goal

@Captain Brown - Thanks, chief. 30 models, over a year, for a mere 120 points... *shakes head*

@Briancj - No unit markings at present. They may be something I come back to down the line, especially as the unit has only now got all the people together. Having said that, they're at the point where I'd be happy to use them in a game

WIP

Dwarf Pirate(s) - A set of models from Black Scorpion Miniatures which have been waiting on paint for... years. I originally picked them up to use as a proxy for one of the Pirate units in WARMACHINE, but never got to the point of working on them. Until now. Just worked up the bases last night, as I was a little busy finishing off other things...

Techmarine - First pass of red ont he armour is complete. I'm using P3 Skorne Red for this, and will be applying a second coat before Thursday's stream - this would allow me to trim the pins in his feet and glue him to the base, as he does like to wobble in this cork.

Knight-Questor - Edge highlighting isn't my favourite thing to do, nor do I believe it is my strong suit. Still tried it on the blue sections on Mr Shiny, to varying levels of success. Hair next, then I have to bite the bullet and paint the cloak...

Completed

H.U.N.K from Resident Evil 2 - really like how the lenses came out on the gas mask.

CT-1701 from Imperial Assault

A small pack of Loth-cats from Imperial Assault

Goal Progress
64/365 models completed (7 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 57)
15 models to paint for Imperial Assault

Another Thursday, another theme music stream - nothing completed tonight, but got very close with one piece, close with a second, and made decent progress on some others.

Having said that, I've got a bit of a cushion from the last couple of streams (64 models vs. day 59), so I'm still ahead of the game for now.

WIP

Navigator's Guild Terrain - I probably could've finished this off tonight. I really only need to add the blue gem technical to the telescope, but I think I'm going to go back and add sand to the base, as the drybrushing hasn't really worked. The map may want a second coat of shade to age it, too.

Tress Hacnua - dubbed "The Merc with a Smirk" by Twitch chat - considering she was just undercoated at the start of stream, I'm fairly happy with the progress. Hope to get her finished on Sunday.

Techmarine - Got the second coat of Skorne Red down, then trimmed the pins and glued him into his base, as the wobble he had on the cork was getting irritating. Should probably start on metals next.

Dwarf Pirates - Eight Pirates is a reasonable amount of skin, even if they are Dwarfs. Will probably do the metals next (sword blades and pistol barrels, maybe cutlass guards as well), then split them into two groups of four and work them up that way. There may be some work on both done when working on the hair & beards, too.

Next stream will be on Sunday, though I intend to get some prep work done before then.

@Captain - The effort to point ratio on Conscripts is... unfortunate.

@Theophony - The lenses are really simple, too. Retributor armour, with Blood for the Blood God over the top.

Another four hour Sunday stream down - two models finished, three more started, and progress on another nine. I'll settle for that, even if viewer count was low.

WIP

"Gnome Illusionist" from Antediluvian Miniatures - Definitely not the Dungeon Master from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon... Started getting some basecoats down on him.

Dwarf Pirates - Blades became Steel, gun barrels became Gungrey.

Techmarine - Shaded red. Painted chapter pad Celestra, then Ulthuan. Went over everything non-red and non-skin with German Grey, then washed it with Nuln Oil.

Wookiee Warrior - I may have been weak, and picked up the Wookiee Warrior blister pack this week. Basecoated with Umbral Umber, drybrushed with Battlefield Brown. One was then drybrushed with Bloodstone, the other with Gun Corps Brown. Bandolier basecoated with Bootstrap Leather, blades & shoulder pad with VMA Steel. Not quite a one-stream paint job, but I'll get them done on Tuesday.

Completed

Navigator's Guild Terrain (Guild Ball)

Tress Hacnua (Imperial Assault) - Sotek Green with Coelia Greenshade over it works surprisingly well...

Goal Progress
66/365 models completed (7 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 62)
16 models to paint for Imperial Assault

Last night saw another stream - about an average number of viewers for a Tuesday, though it did see me picking up my 450th follower over there, which is a nice little milestone to clear.

I managed to finish off a couple of models, and progress a few more - including the return of a Dark Lord from the WIP box...

WIP

Darth Vader - I'm trying for a quick Vader here. Basecoated all the model bar the lightsaber blade with German Grey, then washed it with Nuln Oil. Once that had dried, I went back and went over the armour panels with Nuln Oil Gloss. May need to wash the cloth with normal Nuln again, though. Also, basecoated the lightsaber blade with Retributor Armour.

Dwarf Pirate - Beards and hair! I ended up with two guys with brown hair, two with grey, two which will be black, one blonde and one with auburn hair. I'm planning on shading the metals between streams, and then I can work up one group at a time.

Dungeon Master - After a little research, realised the DM in the D&D cartoon wore two tones of red. The brighter red is GW Mephiston Red, the darker is Warcolours Red 5, both washed with Agrax Earthshade. Trim and hair will be next, I think.

Techmarine - Started basecoating metals with VMA Steel and Gungrey, as well as part of the Mechanicum icon with Celestra Grey. Need to go through and tidy up a few bits, and check if I've missed any important metal bits.

Completed

Wookiee Warriors - I may need to reshoot this picture with the Wookiees further back in the booth, as their pose caused more shadow than I saw at the time.

Goal Progress
68/365 models completed (7 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 64)
14 models to paint for Imperial Assault

@Briancj - I'll be honest, Brian, I was kinda using it as a reason not to paint black - but I'm happy with the finished piece.

@amazingturtles - Just don't try and get into a debate with them, unless you're a protocol droid in heavy disguise...

@Captain Brown - Work happens, Captain. Eventually it eases, though, and you'll be able to paint again

Another stream down, two more models complete, one more started. Have also been doing more prep work, with two more =][= Stormtroopers, a Vostroyan Officer and two older Space Marine Captains in need of basing and/or undercoating. Will probably try to get the Stormtroopers ready for Sunday's stream, as they're a quick paint.

WIP

Dungeon Master - Hair (Celestra Grey), staff-top-crystal (VMA Aluminium) and trim-on-bright-red-robe (Rakarth Flesh) all worked on tonight. More trim to come, along with book cover and maybe some freehand...

Dwarf Pirate - Shaded 7/8 beards & hair, along with the pistols and swords. Started to block further colours in on the first set of four.

Murne Rin - Another Imperial Assault hero, who I undercoated last month. VMC Royal Purple for the underrobe, and P3 Beast Hide as a basecoat on the skin.

Completed

Darth Vader (Imperial Assault) - Getting no shrinkage on the Blood for the Blood God on the lightsaber blade was a relief.

Techmarine

Goal Progress
70/365 models completed (7 games, 5 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 66)
13 models to paint for Imperial Assault

Sunday stream was quiet today, which means I can focus on what I'm doing. As a result, got two models from start to finish in one four hour sitting, as well as sorting the basing on some others.

WIP

Dungeon Master - Just added the green gem technical to the top off the staff.

Aquaclops - Started on this guy over a white undercoat. Mostly shades so far, apart from the rock. Biel-Tan Green is the main colour so far.

Feralgeist - Focus went a bit weird on this one. As with the Aquaclops, I worked over a white undercoat. Hexwraith Flame is interesting.

Dwarf Pirate - Nearly finished this one off, until I noticed that I missed his collar. Still working on the others from his batch of four.

Murne Rim - Washed the skin, metalled the gun, added black to the eyes and basecoated the outer robes.

Vostroyan Officer, Space Marine Captain, Dark Angels Captain - Painted the bases on these three today, ready for me to start on at least one of them next time.

Complete

Yeah, I'm not a fan of painting black, either, which is why I'm keen to give this a go as well!

@Briancj - I still think painting white is worse, but painting black is still annoying.

@Ezki - Thanks for the follow, Ezki. And yes, I keep things moving

@Captain Brown - Got to try to get a bit ahead of the curve now, as I know I'll be missing streams later in the year.

* * *

Streamed again last night - was anyone else underwhelmed by the GAMA reveal? I kinda was thinking we'd get more than a BSF expansion in a preview slot.

WIP

SPEHSS MARINES!!1! - Not a huge amount of progress on any of them, but progress on all three. Basecoated (most of) the armour on the DA Captain; torso armour and skin on the Mentor Legion Captain; and hair on Lieutenant "Twenty Degrees" Calsius. Shall try to basecoat his armour next time out.

The Emperor Protects! - Basecoated the skin & trousers on the Vostroyan, as well as the trousers on the Tallarn. Not that two more Platoon Commanders are what I really need, given my 8th ed roster already has a Company Commander and no less than six Platoon Commanders already

Dwarf Pirates - carried on working on three of this group of four.

Aquaclops - Added some variation to the scale colours, as well as basecoating his claws. Want to add some more colour to the scales, probably using Athonian and some more Biel-Tan.

Murne Rin - Shaded the pistol, picked out some trim, basecoated the toenails, worked on the robe a bit.

Complete

Feralgeist (HORDES) - Reasonably happy with this guy, though I could've managed a smoother transition between the Hexwraith Flame and the NightHaunt Gloom.

Dwarf Pirate (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Goal Progress
74/365 models completed (9 games, 6 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 71)

Really quiet stream tonight, which was a little surprising. Still, got some work done, which was handy.

WIP

Space Marines! - Much basecoating, mainly of armour. Also picked out the ribbed areas with Skavenblight Dinge, so everything is ready for washing (I think Nuln Oil in both cases).

Dungeon Master - Highlighted the hair, picked out the ring unde the gem with steel, basecoated the staff and book cover.

Murne Rin - Highlighted blue belt & lower robe trim; washed blue and purple robes with Drakenhof Nightshade and Druchii Violet respectively; washed foot with Agrax, washed gold trim with more Sepia; basecoated staff with Aluminium.

Dwarf Rogues - Second set of Pirates. Mainly basecoating colours in, though I'm not sure how I'm going to tackle this parrot.

Vostroyan Officer - Basecoated a couple of areas while I had some Gungrey on the go. Need to do some research...

Completed

Aquaclops (Retro Raygun) - quite happy with the eye, oddly.

Dwarf Pirates (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Goal Progress
78/365 models completed (10 games, 7 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 73)
Achievement unlocked: Complete miniatures for 10 games or board games

Another quiet stream today - though not as quiet as the last couple, I don't think. Still, was fairly productive.

Before getting onto today's progress, I did get around to putting the =][= Stormtroopers and Poxwalkers into the cabinet...

WIP

Chaos Familiar - Started on one set of the four Chaos Familiar sculpts from Silver Tower today. This little guy got the furthest along.

Dungeon Master - Painted the wood up on his staff.

Dwarf Rogues - Need to paint the parrot on one, and the coat on the other.

Space Marine characters - All three got a Nuln Oil wash over their primary armour colour. When that dried, I used Celestra Grey as the base for white on Calsius and the Mentor Legion Captain, then went back to add Caliban Green for some green areas on the Mentor Legion dude that I'd missed. DA Dude got a brown basecoat on the feathers in his... helmet, before painting the sword blade with German Grey, washed with Nuln Oil.

Completed

Dwarf Rogues (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Murne Rin

Goal Progress
81/365 models completed (10 games, 7 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 76)
12 Imperial Assault models to paint (and/or repair)

Slightly busier stream last night - I think I'm far enough along to either introduce the Blacksmith's Guild to the work area, or to throw together a Catachan Special Weapon Squad with Flamers to blitz on Thursday.

WIP

Chaos Familiar - Really like how my feathered friend is coming along. Shaded the robe with Agrax; basecoated the quills with Screamer Pink; painted the beak with Steel Legion Drab and P3 Jack Bone; painted the "skin" with Meredius Blue before shading it with a mix of Turquoise Ink and Coal Black; picked out the eyes with Mephiston Red; painted a belt pouch with Mournfang Brown.

Dwarf Rogue - Mainly got to finish the parrot off...

SM characters - Worked on picking out various areas of not-main-armour-colour to isolate which bits I do need to work up for the main armour colours.

Completed

Chaos Familiar (Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower)

Dwarf Rogue (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

"Gnome Illusionist" (Antediluvian Miniatures)

Goal Progress
84/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 78)
9/51 Silver Tower models painted

@Captain Brown - Aye, he is from a Kickstarter which was inspired by the cartoon, looking at what the kids might look like a further 10-15 years in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. It may also have included not-Venger, and some appropriate Orcs...

@ChaoticMind - They are cool, aren't they? The only downside is getting two sets of four figures, so they'll be coming back through down the line

Not the busiest of streams for Theme Tune Thursday, but that meant I could crack on with some less-interesting elements without feeling like I might be boring people. Plus, still managed to finish off a couple of models. The Q1 goal is definitely in sight! And I'm off to Warhammer World tomorrow!

WIP

Moonface McGee - Another Chaos Familiar from Silver Tower. Did a second coat of Averland Sunset on the face, and came back later to add a first coat on the arms. Shaft of the weapon was picked out with Battlefield Brown.

Walking Book - AKA Chaos Familiar 4. Basecoated the legs/tail/bookmark with Screamer Pink. Basecoated the cover with Macragge Blue. Added a second coat of Rakarth Flesh to the pages. Shaded the cover with Drakenhof Nightshade.

Knight-Questor - Highlighted the plume (I think? thing on his helmet) with Mephiston Red. Unfortunately, that means the cloak is the next thing to work on :(

Catachan Special Weapon Squad - New project! Six old metal Catachans, three with flamers. Painted the bases as per previous article, to the point where they now need a shade. Trousers painted at the same time, and the skin has had a first coat.

Blacksmith's Guild Forge - Terrain piece from a team box, which has been WIP for a while. Read a guide to doing the coals in a magazine earlier in the week, so started by basecoating them with Skorne Red.

Blacksmith's Guild - Started the skin on four of the remaining five players from this box, with a pass of Midlund Flesh.

Some work to do before next stream - wash the Catachan bases with Agrax, and add the second coat of Midlund Flesh to the Catachans and Blacksmiths. Might even wash their skin - not sure yet.

Completed

Harvey Birdman (Chaos Familiar, Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower)

Dwarf Rogue (Black Scorpion Miniatures) - must remember to get a group shot of these four.

Goal Progress
86/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 80)
10/51 Silver Tower models painted

Had a fairly quiet stream today, and unfortunately didn't get quite so far as I wanted to on the Catachan squad. Still, I finished off a couple more figures, and I think we'll get the Catachans next time out.

WIP

Moonface McGee - Added a second coat of Averland to the arms, then shaded the yellow with Cassandora. Worked the wood up with Steel Legion Drab, Rucksack Tan and a shade of Agrax. Picked out the blade of the weapon with VMA Steel.

Catachans - Lots of non-metal things painted. Boots (German Grey, Nuln Oil), vests (Greatcoat Grey), leather (Mournfang Brown), decorative bits (Mephiston Red). Skin had a second coat of Midlund Flesh between streams, as well as being shaded with Reikland Fleshtone. Bases were shaded with agrax, and the edges tidied up with Abaddon Black.

AT-DP - Not gotten too far with this one. So far, undercoated black and basecoated with German Grey.

Completed

Chaos Familiar (Silver Tower)

Blacksmith's Guild Forge (Guild Ball)

Goal Progress
88/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 1 unit, day 83)
11/51 Silver Tower models painted

@Captain Brown - Thanks, Captain. Nice to get a WIP that has been hanging around a while out of the queue

Stream numbers are a bit odd for last night - got a nice raid from a Swedish streamer, but only a few people actually talked in chat, and viewer count tailed off over the course of the session.

WIP

Moonface McGee - Tidied up the black areas. Shaded the steel. Based the severed helmet with Aluminium, before applying a first coat of Seraphim Sepia. Painted the boots/gloves with Castellan Green, with an Athonian wash. Picked out the bells with VMA Steel.

AT-DP - Celestra Grey. 2 coats on the cockpit, 1 on the legs. Will try to get it smoother before my next stream.

Tech Priest Enginseer - Tidied up undercoat with Warcolours Black Undercoat. Applied first coat of Cryx Bane Highlight to the base.

Complete

Catachan Special Weapon Squad (Warhammer 40,000)

Goal Progress
94/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 2 units, day 85)
21.6% towards Imperial goal

@Captain Brown - Why thank ye, Cap'n. Didn't manage to polish anything off tonight, but we did make good progress on a few pieces.

WIP

Davith Elso (Imperial Assault) - Last of the PCs for Campaign Mode. This guy was undercoated this afternoon, but his scheme lends itself to a quick paint. Basecoated almost everything with German Grey, then went over the blue areas with Macragge Blue. Skin was Midlund Flesh (x2) with a Reikland Wash. Lightsaber blade was basecoated with Aluminium, while the handle was basecoated with Warplock Bronze. Remaining grey areas were washed with Nuln Oil.

Probe Droid (Imperial Assault) - The two I had to repair were undercoated today. Basecoated German Grey, then drybrushed with VMA Gungrey.

Knight-Questor (Silver Tower) - Came back to this guy after a suggestion that I go with a blue cloak. Basecoated with two coats of P3 Cygnar Blue Base, ready to shade and highlight from there.

Blacksmith's Guild - Three male players had their trousers basecoated with P3 Gravedigger Denim. Two then had their hair basecoated - one with Rucksack Tan, the other with Steel Legion Drab.

Enginseer - Worked up the base as per the earlier guide. Basecoated the skin on the face while I did so for Davith, and added some Skorne Red to the robes when I picked out the brick on his base.

Bits not photo'd - Added a second coat of Celestra Grey to the legs of the AT-DP, and a second coat of Seraphim Sepia to the severed Stormcast head carried by Moonface McGee.

Fairly quiet stream, where I wasn't able to raid the usual suspects as they're at Adepticon...

WIP

Moonface McGee - Shaded the bells, as well as the Stormcast head. Used VMC Royal Purple for the trim on his robes.

Knight-Questor - Shaded the cloak twice - first with Exile Blue, then a mix of Exile Blue & Battlefield Brown.

Enginseer - Shaded the skin with Reikland Fleshshade. Basecoated all metal areas with VMA Gungrey. Picked out the axe grips with Mournfang Brown. Went back over the red with Skorne Red.

Blacksmith's Guild - Basecoated some leather areas with Mournfang Brown, as well as some apron areas with Beast Hide.

Completed

Davith "Hawkbat" Elso (Imperial Assault)

AT-DP (Imperial Assault)

Goal Progress
96/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 2 units, day 90)
10 models to paint for Imperial Assault

Streamed again last night, which was quiet, yet productive.

Quick note on one set of goals I have for the year - I'm trying to finish an average of one model per day for the year, while still managing to finish an average of a model per day in each quarter. This means that any excess I finish in a quarter gives me a cushion on the annual goal, but doesn't help with the next quarter's progress.

WIP

Tech-Priest Enginseer - Picked out a few metal areas with Warplock Bronze & Brass Scorpion, as well as tidying up the panel over his mouth. Washed all the Gungrey with Nuln Oil.

Poxwalker - Started another set of 6 EZB Poxwalkers. Painted up the bases off-stream, before tidying up the feet with Ulthuan Grey and washing the skin with Reikland Fleshshade. Will probably go around the edge of the base again before next stream, as well as checking I haven't missed any flesh areas.

Completed

Knight-Questor (Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower)

Chaos Familiar #4 (Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower)

Imperial Probe Droids (Star Wars: Imperial Assault)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 100/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 2 units, day 92)
Q2 Progress (4 models completed, day 2)
8 models to paint for Imperial Assault
13/51 models painted for Silver Tower

Every so often, a spot of housework is required - as a result, I spent some time this week tidying up my painting area. While I had it tidy, I took a group shot of the 100 models I've finished so far this year:
Spoiler:

Last night's stream was quiet, again, but I did manage to start a couple of new projects. Didn't finish anything, but I think I'm set up to finish off six or seven models on Sunday. I'm heading down to Salute tomorrow, so I won't get to prep any more stuff for that stream.

WIP

Tech-Priest Enginseer - Shaded the leather, bronze/brass and red cloth with Agrax Earthshade. Used VMA Steel to add some contrast in some areas. Started working on the Mechanicus symbols on the axe and backpack.

Poxwalkers - Carried on working on the skin, using Druchii Violet, Seraphim Sepia and Athonian Camoshade. Also basecoated the areas to be metal with my Warcolours Black Undercoat.

Anvil (Blacksmith's Guild) - Basecoated the beard with Menoth White Base.

New projects!

Ryza-pattern ruins - Hatch - Basecoated the edge of the hatch with P3 Cryx Bane Highlight - need to drybrush it with some highlights, then pick out the bolts before shading it with Agrax. Not entirely sure on the point of this bit of terrain, admittedly.

SC2-M Repulsor Tank - Basecoated the whole tank and pilot with German Grey. Added two layers of Celestra Grey to the pilot, before washing him with a thinned blue/black shade mix. Need to plan out my colours for the tank, then I can push forwards with it on Sunday.

Did a day-trip down to Salute yesterday, for my first time attending it. Amusingly managed to fail to meet any of the other Twitch streamers there, so I obviously managed to roll a 1 on my Perception check. Picked up a few bits and pieces, including a couple of KR cases.

This did mean I was a little low on energy for today's stream, but I concentrated on finishing off some of the WIP stuff from Thursday.

WIP

S2C-M Crewman - Highlighted the top of the helmet, shoulders, gloves and chest with Ulthuan Grey.

Completed

Tech-Priest Enginseer (Warhammer 40,000)

Poxwalkers (Warhammer 40,000) - takes me to 12 Poxwalkers completed in 2019, for a third legal unit.

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 107/365 models completed (10 games, 8 manufacturers, 3 units, day 97)
Q2 Progress (11 models completed, day 7)
24.6% towards the Imperial goal

Last night was a bit of a tough one, after a couple of nights of not sleeping too well, and a long day in the form of Salute Saturday. Still, I got through the stream, and finished a unit which had been WIP for the better part of a year.

WIP

Ahsoka Tano - Lots of basecoating. Looking at the picture, a couple of areas need tidying up, and I need to figure out how I'd doing the hair/headdress.

Ryza-pattern Ruins - Basecoated the "outside" side of the two barricade sections with Cryx Bane Highlight, using multiple layers.

Completed

Ninjas (Test of Honour) - Picked up the Foundry Oriental Flesh paint set to do the skin - need more practise with it, I think.
Spoiler:

Actual Ninjas

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 110/365 models completed (11 games, 9 manufacturers, 4 units, day 99)
Q2 Progress (14 models completed, day 9)

@Briancj - I'm not going to lie, I was tempted

While I was at Salute, I picked up a KR case and foam for my Resident Evil 2 board game models. Yesterday I went through and plucked the foam - careful - so that the bigger models fit in. I still need to see what I can do with the twenty doors, but everything else fits in.

Spoiler:

I have no idea what was going on with yesterday's stream - I was pretty much talking to myself for the first hour, which is always worrying. Still, got a couple of bits painted in a single stream, and made some progress with other stuff.

WIP

Ryza-pattern ruins - I drybrushed the grey on the hatch and barricades with P3 Trollblood Highlight and P3 Sickly Skin. For the hatch, I then picked out the bolts and framework with VMA Gungrey. On the barricade with a door, the door got basecoated with Castellan Green.

Hedgehog Alchemist - Highlighted the fur with a Battlefield Brown/Steel Legion Drab mix, followed by straight Steel Legion Drab. Picked out the claws with Steel Legion Drab, before going over them with P3 Jack Bone. Picked out the eyes and nose with Coal Black. Highlighted the dress with a mix of Red 4 and Red 5 from Warcolours. Basecoated the stave with Battlefield Brown.

Completed

Item Crates (Resident Evil 2) - These were pretty straightforward - basecoat the panels (twice) with Castellan Green. Basecoat the frame with Gungrey. Pick out the hinges and locking bar with VMA Steel. Wash whole model with Nuln Oil. Add Typhus Corrosion around the bottom and wherever I was unhappy with the wash. Tidy up the base with Abaddon Black. Job done!

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 112/365 models completed (11 games, 9 manufacturers, 4 units, day 101)
Q2 Progress (16 models completed, day 11)

Today was a day where we started off a few new pieces, finished off some pieces (including one which has been kicking around for a few months) and contemplated how we're going to do some others. The stream was busy enough for me to feel like I was talking to people for the whole four hours, but not busy enough to be distracting, which is about ideal for me.

WIP

Ryza-pattern Ruins - Barricades - The main job today was settling on a colour for the "interior" walls. I've gone with Incubi Darkness for now, mainly as I can;t recall the last thing I used it on. I think I'll do this befor the grey on the two big ruins, as I really didn't want to get it on the grey. I also picked out the door ID panel with Warplock Bronze followed by Brass Scorpion.

VSF Gentleman - This chap, and his female partner, had the same steps done on them today. Their robotic canine companion went a bit further, as can be seen below. I basecoated the base initially with VGC Parasite Brown, before replacing that with Bugman's Glow after I used the texture paints on the dog's base. I also basecoated their guns with some spare VMA Gungrey I had out after doing something else.

Darkoath Chieftain - Thought I'd make a start on the next "hero" from Silver Tower, along with the two Skaven from the set. All three had their bases painted first (two coats of VGC Sombre Grey, a wash with Drakenhof Nightshade, and a drybrush with Sombre Grey) before I basecaoted the chieftain's blades with some spare VMA Steel, and did a basecoat of the skin with Midlund Flesh. That'll need a second coat, preferably before my next stream.

Completed

Hedgehog Alchemist (Oathsworn Miniatures)

Victorian SciFi Robodog (Lead Adventure)

Ryza-pattern Ruins - Hatch (Warhammer 40,000)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 115/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 104)
Q2 Progress: 19 models completed, day 11
Achievement Unlocked: Complete miniatures produced by 10 manufacturers

@Briancj - No worries, dude. I'm fully aware that timezones are a PITA

@Captain Brown - I'm continuing the fight, sir!

Had a stream of two halves last night - the quiet bit for the first hour or two, followed by a raid for a boost for the second half.

WIP

Ryza-pattern Barricade - Added a second coat on the Incubi Darkness, followed by a Nuln Oil shade. Once that was dry, I shaded the concrete side of things with Agrax. I think I drybrushed this with Febrisian Grey, but I could be wrong with that.

Cook's Guild Terrain - Basecoated the wood with Battlefield Brown, then drybrushed up with Gun Corps Brown and Rucksack Tan. Not decided if I'm going with an Agrax or Coelia wash over it yet.

Darkoath Chieftain - Second coat of Midlund on the flesh, a wash with Riekland, and then picked out the skulls with Steel Legion Drab. Not as many skulls as I was expecting, admittedly.

Cat Huntress - Didn't get much done yet, as I need to decide the fur colour I'm going with. I basecoated the leather areas with Mournfang Brown, and mused a lot.

Completed

Cook's Guild Ball Marker (Guild Ball) - How often do you have to paint bread?

Ryza-pattern Barricade (Warhammer 40,000) - This ruin was a little further ahead of the other one. Definitely drybrushed this with Fenrisian Grey, followed by Pallid Wych Flesh. The darker bronze sections got a basecoat of Warplock, a wash with Agrax, and a touch of Nihilakh Oxide. The silver metals got some VMA Gungrey, and a shade of Nuln Oil. Once everything was dry, I added some Typhus Corrosion.

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 117/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 106)
Q2 Progress: 21 models completed, day 16

Last night was my first stream for a week, having missed Thursday and Sunday for my Easter break - got a reasonable amount done, but maybe not as much as I was hoping.

WIP

Darkoath Chieftain - Basecoated the bladed shoulderpad with Gungrey, before washing it with Nuln. Need to figure out remaining colours next.

Cook's Guild Terrain - Washed the wood with Coelia Greendhade, before beginning detail work. Most of the metal was Gungrey with a Nuln wash, other than the knife, which was VMA Steel. Carrots used VGC Parasite Brown with an Agrax wash, while the greenery was Caliban with Warpstone over the top. The slate cutting board was Incubi Darkness with a Nuln wash, which the meat was basecoated with Warcolours Red 5. Should finish this on Thursday night.

Completed

Ryza-pattern Barricade (Warhammer 40,000) - Drybrushed the Incubi side with Pallid Wych Flesh. Bronze areas were Warplock, Agrax, bits of Nihilakh. Silver bits were Gungrey with Nuln. Added Typhus Corrosion to taste.

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 118/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 113)

Is that kit worth it? While one could make something similar it probably would not have the little details.

@Captain Brown - Worth it is a tricky one. I like the barricades and the ruins, but I'm not entirely sure what the point of the hatch is. I guess if you had several of them, you could use them as objective markers? Looking at the GW store, the price for two sprues of ruins (so 2 hatches, 4 barricades and 4 ruins) isn't bad, especially as there is some flexibility in building the ruins. Word of advice, though? Paint the t-shaped ruins in pieces before slotting and gluing them together - some recesses are proving a pain to get into.

WIP

Cook's Guild Goal Marker - Shaded the Warplock Bronze with Agrax. Have gone abck this morning with a bit more to hit any areas which are still shiny. Some Nihilakh needs adding.

Hondo Ohnaka - Some of the basecoating is a bit rough. Using Warcolours Red 5, Citadel Fenrisian Grey and P3 Menoth White Highlight on the jumpsuit and undershirt, with Castellan Green on his helmet. Next job is neatening the basecoats up before moving to other areas.

Completed

Cadian Company Commander (Warhammer 40,000) - Considering I only glued the guy together on Wednesday night, having him finished by the end of Thursday's stream amuses me. Standard basing, same scheme for the uniform as the Conscripts, but with a red coat lining. Could maybe have done a better job there, but happy for a quick bit of work.

Cook's Guild Terrain (Guild Ball)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 120/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 115)
Q2 Progress: 24 models completed, day 25
Imperial progress: 27.6%

In previous versions of 40K, and possibly current, the hatches were used as part of stratagems. Sewer/underground deployment, escape hatch from a Bunker, etc.

They also make exceptional objective markers.

@MegaDave - Thanks dude. A little annoyed with myself that I didn't get the two big pieces finished in April, but I'll get to them eventually.

@Captain Brown - No worries, Captain.

@Briancj - Yeah, objective markers were what I was thinking. Adding them as hatches for scratchbuilt bunkers is another good shout.

Streamed yesterday, after missing a week through a combination of my brother's stag do, and needing to do housework before an inspection of my flat. A little low on energy/inspiration, I started on some of the doors for Resident Evil 2.

WIP

Hondo Ohnaka (Imperial Assault) - Went back over the grey and white sections of his clothing. Basecoated the skin with P3 Beast Hide. Basecoated boots, holster and belt with either P3 Umbral Umber or P3 Battlefield Brown. Basecoated gun with VMC German Grey. Basecoated the cap he wears under the helmet with GW Fenrisiam Grey.

Cook's Guild Goal Marker (Guild Ball) - Basecoated the stew (and logs) with P3 Umbral Umber, before picking out the carrots with VGC Parasite Brown.

Completed

3D Doors (Resident Evil 2) - undercoated to completed in a day.

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 125/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 125)
Q2 Progress: 29 models completed, day 35

WIP

Tallarn Officer - Worked on the under-robes, using some Cryx Bane Highlight. Need to decide on sash/cloak colours.

Cook's Guild Goal Marker - Got most of it finished off, just need to paint a turnip, I think.

Completed

3D Doors (Resident Evil 2) - yes, the one on the right was in the last shot. Different Shade on each door - L-R is Carroburg Crimson, Seraphim Sepia, Coelia Greenshade, Agrax Earthshade.

Hondo Ohnaka (Imperial Assault)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 129/365 models completed (11 games, 10 manufacturers, 4 units, day 127)

Dysartes,

Good luck over the next few months, as the warmth of summer enters the painting den and calls you outside to enjoy the sun's rays.

Cheers,

PS: Forgot you were in the UK and might not see that much sun.

@Captain Brown - Aye, if this week is anything to go by, we're not going to have to worry about much sun...

WIP

Poxbringer - Undercoated this guy white this morning. The base got the usual work-up. I'm aiming for Sickly Pallor of Decay look on this guy, hence why he looks so white. The horns/claws were painted with Reikland Fleshshade, followed by two coats of Athonian Camoshade.

High Roller - I think this guy is meant to be a familiar, but I'm not sure. P3 Cygnar Blue Base for the body, Averland Sunset for the shoes (going for a Mickey mouse style for the arms/legs).

Completed

More Resident Evil 2 3D Doors

Tallarn Officer (Warhammer 40,000)

WIP

Nurglings (Warhammer 40,000) - I'm trying out a variety of skin tones on these Nurglings, to stop the bases looking as just one blob of green. As you can see, I'm also painting the segments of the Nurgling base individually, rather than trying to paint them while glued down and based.

Completed

Pyp (Reaper, High Rollers)

@Captain - Thanks. The Sickly Pallor of Death scheme is one I think I want to experiment with more. Good job I have three units of Plaguebearers to paint at some point!

@Ezki - Cheers dude. The Nurglings were quite fun to paint - until I realised how cheap the unit is, points-wise

WIP

Nurglings - need to finish the bases off on these guys, which I'm doing today. Did get the assorted Nurgling skins, guts and other details polished off on stream, though, and glued the elements down to the base.

@Captain Brown - Thanks Captain. I've definitely had some fun with the little dudes.

Had some technical issues last night, which meant I had to call the stream early. I'm also missing Sunday's stream, as I'm helping to run a Magic: The Gathering event with the crew from one of my LGS. I'll get some store credit for doing so, which can go towards some of the IA packs I don't own yet.

WIP

Plaguebearers - Started on five Plaguebearers last night. The bases are the usual approach. The skin has had two coats of Athonian Camoshade, while the sword is painted with Warplock Bronze.

RE2 Doors - Yup, more doors. This time, I'm going with a dark red finish rather than green, using Warcolours Red 5.

Completed

Nurgling Swarm (Warhammer 40,000)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 139/365 models completed (11 games, 11 manufacturers, 5 units, day 136)
Q2 Progress: 43 models completed, day 46

First stream for a few days tonight - missed Sunday due to helping run a M:TG event for 146 people, and was still tired from it (and the Saturday event) so skipped Tuesday.

I would like to thank Briancj for coming along today and joining in with the chat - always fun to see a new name in there.

Completed

Red Doors for Resident Evil 2 - Finished these off on Tuesday. Third set of these sculpts painted; one more to go.

Plaguebearers (Warhammer 40,000) - Finished these off tonight, and I'm pretty happy with them. Guts, bones, weapons, eyes & boils were on the menu (which is why I don't dine there that often).

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 147/365 models completed (11 games, 11 manufacturers, 5 units, day 143)

@Briancj - No worries, Brian. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I managed to forget to update in here after Sunday's stream, so consider this a double. I was at MCM London on Saturday, and therefore tired on Sunday, which explains the gap in my memory.

WIP

Plaguebearer Standard - The other half of the unit was started on yesterday, with the bases getting finished and the bronze basecoated. Need to wash the skin before tomorrow night, and then I may have a chance of getting the unit finished off tomorrow.

ISB Infiltrators & Alliance Smuggler (Imperial Assault) - Didn't get too far with them yesterday, just basecoating the skin. Not sure what's going on with the Smuggler's eyes, though.

Completed

Jawa Scavenger #2 (Imperial Assault)

SC2-M Repulsor Tank (Imperial Assault)

Blue Doors (Resident Evil 2) - Only 3 more doors to go...

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 152/365 models completed (11 games, 11 manufacturers, 5 units, day 148)
Q2 Progress: 56 models completed, day 58
28 models to paint for Imperial Assault

@Captain Brown - There were a lot of doors in that Q2 progress, which does make it sound a little better than it might otherwise be. Still, there's always more to do.

Plaguebearers (Warhammer 40,000) - The second half of my first unit of them.

I took Tuesday and Thursday off from streaming - not sure if it was a bout of imposter syndrome or not, but I just wasn't feeling it. However, I got back down to business today.

WIP

Zeb Orellios (Imperial Assault) - Mainly basecoating in areas of colour (and picking the "right" colours). Went with P3 Moldy Ochre for the yellow section of his undersuit, with Citadel Steel Legion Drab for the brown, while the green armour was Castellan Green. I still have no idea what the doohickey on his back is meant to be, though.

Enforcer Captain in Peacekeeper Armour (Mantic Games) - This guy has been on a shelf for years. Got him down this morning and dusted him off. Vallejo Game Colour Sombre Grey for the light armour sections, Vallejo Model Colour German Grey for the dark. I need to tidy the face up before shading.

Completed

ISB Infiltrators (Imperial Assault)

Von Wodr (Burrows & Badgers)

Landsknecht Mouse Soldier (Burrows & Badgers)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 168/365 models completed (12 games, 12 manufacturers, 6 units, day 167)
Q2 Progress: 72 models completed, day 77
27 Imperial Assault models to paint

No, sometimes you just need a BREAK. It's why a lot of content creators make some filler shows, or re-broadcast earlier shows/streams.

@Briancj - Maybe. But my sleep pattern is a little wonky, and I'd been rained on coming home from work last week, so who knows?

Thought I'd add a Landsknecht group shot - just as Michael from Oathsworn announces another one is to come in the next KS...

Work in Progress

Cybernetica Datasmith - SO. MANY. RANDOM. METAL. DETAILS!

Highland Ferret - Hadn't realised the focus was off. Finally decided on how i'm going to approach the fur, so basecoated it (on Tuesday) with Umbral Umber.

Rebel Saboteur - Considering I only undercoated this guy yesterday, I'm happy with the progress. Hope to finish the pair on Tuesday.

Completed

Zeb Orrelios (Imperial Assault)

Rebel Troopers (Imperial Assault) - undercoated at the same time as the Saboteurs

Leia Organa (Imperial Assault) - also undercoated yesterday

Alliance Smuggler (Imperial Assault)

Seth Alkot (Iron Kingdoms RPG)

Enforcer Captain in Peacekeeper Armour (Warpath)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 176/365 models completed (14 games, 13 manufacturers, 6 units, day 174)
Q2 Progress: 80 models completed, day 84
21 Imperial Assault models to paint

Streamed on Tuesday, as well as tonight - just didn't get to updating on here. Broke out my Black Scorpion Miniatures Dwarf Fantasy Football team for some attention - they've had their faces painted for a while, as well as some beards, but needed a colour scheme settling on and most of the painting doing.

WIP

Dwarf Lineman (Black Scorpion Miniatures) - I'm using Sotek Green for the coloured shoulder pad, while the metal one is Warplock Bronze (which will ger BRass Scorpion and Agrax over the top).

Completed

Rebel Saboteurs (Imperial Assault)

Dwarf Blitzers (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Dwarf Runners (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 182/365 models completed (14 games, 13 manufacturers, 6 units, day 178)
Q2 Progress: 86 models completed, day 88
19 Imperial Assault models to paint
Not an unlocked achievement: 1/day for H1 completed.

Last day of the week, the month, the quarter and the half-year - and I've just managed to scrape through another one of the achievements on my list.

WIP

Dwarf Lineman (Black Scorpion) - As I was finishing off half the Linemen, I was also working on the second half. Managed to get most of the basecoats down during the stream, leaving the helms and under-shoulder armour still to do. I want to get the helms basecoated before Tuesday's stream.

Helga the Cheerleader (Games Workshop) - One of the few times I've sculpted something. Queen Helga was a character released alongside the Grudge of Drong campaign pack. When I was putting coaching staff for BB together back in t'day, I ordered her from Mail Order and sculpted a bit of a pom-pom on her shield hand.

Dwarf Wizard/Apothecary - Old school model, used normally as an apothecary once one is recruited.

Completed

5 Dwarf Linemen (Black Scorpion Miniatures)

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 187/365 models completed (14 games, 13 manufacturers, 6 units, day 181)
Q2 Progress: 91 models completed, day 91
Achievement unlocked: Complete one model per day during Q2

Apologies for not uploading pictures following Tuesday's stream - but here we go, with shots following two streams.

Also, thanks to Briancj for joining me during yesterday's stream - hope you didn't eat too much yesterday, dude.

WIP

Made a start on a Scout Shotgun squad and Lord Felthius yesterday, starting with the bases. Need to add bone to the skulls, and then wash the bases & tidy up the rims, then we can get on with the actual work.

Trollslayer (Black Scorpion) - The trollslayers are the last two models from the Black Scorpion team. Need to build the hair up, and decide whether to do the helms as steel or gold.

Expedition to the Lost World - Added some leather and shades to the pair of them, but still need to decide on a colour scheme.

Cybernetica Datasmith - Finally finished basecoating the metals, and have shaded them (and the German Grey areas). Next step is to touch-up and shade the robe, then start on adding details to the model. He's a heck of a lot of work for so few points...

Completed

Dwarf Linemen, part 2 (Black Scorpion)

Queen Helga (Games Workshop)

Dwarf Wizard (Games Workshop) - used as an apothecary in Blood Bowl

Goal Progress
2019 Progress: 194/365 models completed (14 games, 13 manufacturers, 6 units, day 185)
Q3 Progress: 7 models completed, day 4
